We're in the middle of a game.
This linebacker, this linebacker walks up to me.
He goes, hey, ref, my mom wants you to wave at her.
What?
Time out.

If we didn't talk ever again, I was harmed.
you just understood.
That's how personal it got.
Wow.
Then after that game seven,
Mark keep coming to her.
He's like,
you know I love you, dog.
You know, it's all love.
This was just playoffs.
This was just basketball.

This is the herd. I am Jason McIntyre filling in for Colin Cowherd. Friday the 13th.
Probably one of the most memorable Friday the 13th of my life. And certainly yours,
the sports world has come to a screeching halt. But we're here for you. IHeart Radio,
Fox Sports Radio. I don't know if you're in your cubicle. You're in your car. You're in your
You're at home huddling with your family.
But boy, we have a lot to talk about today.
Not necessarily in the sports world.
We're just life.
I guess the latest you guys just heard,
the Masters has been postponed.
Not canceled.
Not canceled like the NCAA tournament.
The Masters postponed NASCAR this weekend officially postponed.
Folks, there's nothing to gamble on.
I got to say March.
I've argued for the longest time, March is my second favorite.
month on the sports calendar. November's always first, right? You got the NFL, college football,
you got the NBA college basketball. For me, November's the best, but March madness is just amazing.
Love it, gamble on it, do a lot of stuff for Fox Sports, Fox Sports Radio, FS1, and I was all geeked.
You know, they told me I was going to host the herd today. And a week ago today, just a week ago,
I was like, oh my gosh, the Thursday night NBA games are amazing. Lakers Rockets, after the Lakers
crushed the rockets, I would, you know, keep promoting LeBron's the MVP. Lakers are going to the finals.
LeBron at 35 is going to win a title. I was going to talk a little NCAA tournament. I had this
amazing thing planned where I know the Bucks are reeling. The Bucks were supposed to play the Celtics
last night. Bucks were going to lose that game, obviously, because the Bucks are struggling.
Janus is hurt. And I was going to talk about how Janus should move on. I have other teams in mind.
I had this great show planned and then, you know, life happened.
And everything changed.
It was Wednesday technically.
You know, my kid plays third grade basketball.
If you guys listen to my Saturday radio show, you know I talk about hashtag dad life.
I coach my first grade daughter in basketball, coach my third grade son in basketball,
and we have a March Madness tournament.
And we went to the championship last year and lost.
And we were going to be a high seed this year.
We were very excited, make a run.
We had practice Wednesday.
Only a couple kids showed up because of the coronavirus.
and other, you know, commitments to baseball and so forth.
And we get out of practice.
We're heading toward the dinner table and my phone starts blowing up.
Rudy Gobert has coronavirus.
What?
Rudy Gobert!
And then, of course, everybody sees the video.
Rudy Gobert acting like a buffoon, rubbing microphones,
rubbing tape recorders, mocking the coronavirus,
just two days before.
Okay?
And then within minutes, Tom Hanks.
has the coronavirus.
And this was the tipping point, right?
Everybody before was kind of like,
eh, coronavirus, it's happening in Asia,
the Italy's got some problems.
But we're sheltered a little bit over here, folks.
Let's admit it.
Nobody really took the coronavirus seriously.
Now, again, Saturday radio show I've been doing,
I don't want to say I've been pressing the panic button,
but for two weeks I've been telling you guys,
yo, get to Costco, load up.
I'm not saying to take all the toilet paper.
I'm not saying get all the batteries.
I'm not saying get all the disinfectant wipes,
but you guys better be prepared.
And I want to turn back the clock a bit
to when I was a little kid.
And folks, every single day
at about, you know, six o'clock, I'd wake up
and I would go to the bottom of my driveway
and I'd pick up the Washington Post.
Yeah, I know the millennials listening
newspaper delivery, what's that?
And I would pull out the sports section,
just the sports section,
because I was a sports nut as a kid.
Right, I played every sport.
My parents said, hey, you want to play tennis?
You want to play basketball, golf, soccer, traveling soccer teams.
It was great.
And my dad, every single morning, Jason, you got to read more than sports.
Come on.
And I'm like, no, I'm a punk, I'm arrogant.
I just want to know sports.
I would go into class.
This is real.
In sixth grade with my buddy, and we would play a game, what college did this NBA player go to?
You could ask me any player in the late 80s, early 90s.
And I knew where he went to college.
LaBradford Smith.
Goulet's looking at me over here.
Who's LaBratford-Smith?
I mean, I got tons of names.
And we would do this every day
because I would inhale the sports section every morning before school.
Box scores, recaps, you name it.
Mike Wobon and Kornheiser, I would read them in the Washington Post every day.
And my dad steadfastly, you got to get a global perspective, Jason.
So, of course, it took like 15 years before I was like, oh, dad, that was really smart.
I wish I had listened earlier and got the global perspective.
So what have I been doing these last, you know,
six weeks, I've been aware of the coronavirus.
And it's been serious overseas.
And again, 700 million people in China.
We're basically under house arrest for a month to six weeks.
Like, don't leave your house.
The Apple stores are closed.
Everything is shut down.
This was for like six weeks.
Macau, which is like the gambling hub over there, closed casinos for two weeks.
And listen, here in America hasn't happened yet.
We're talking at our meeting before the show.
I'm of the belief that Vegas will shut down for a week or at least at the minimum.
If you go look right now, you can't gamble on anything because nothing's happening.
Right?
So I've been on this coronavirus for a few weeks and I'm not going to be that guy who's alarmist because, trust me,
I went on social media and that people who listen to the podcast would be like, Jason, man,
what is with the fear?
Why are you doing this?
Why are you freaking out so much?
I'm saying, guys, it's coming here.
I'm telling you, Italy three weeks ago, business as usual, travel, drinking wine, having fun.
Italy right now, restaurants are closed.
We're going to go there in America.
That is coming.
I don't know about you guys.
School has been canceled for my kids for several weeks.
Spring breaks coming up.
It'll probably be a three-week break.
And I just want you guys out there be smart.
That's all I say.
Don't you have to be fearful.
You don't have to panic.
We're here for you to tell you.
Guys, you want to be smart.
We've got an infectious disease expert coming on here in about 45 minutes.
And I have questions.
I know you have questions.
We're going to open the phone line, something that Colin Cowherd rarely does.
We're going to open the phone lines.
And you guys, any questions you want me to ask this guy, you send them on over.
Because I'm telling you right now, I play in a regular pickup basketball game.
And after the Rudy Gobert News Wednesday, my wife said, you're not going to play basketball.
No way.
Are you crazy?
So the guys went to play, pick up basketball at my gym today.
It's the old Clippers facility out here in Los Angeles.
Usually a full court run.
The basketball courts are closed.
We go work out to a bunch of other guys go work out at F-45, the Mark Wahlberg thing.
Yeah, nobody's going there.
Nobody's going to the gym.
Everybody's being smart.
You've got to, you've got to listen to these infectious disease experts.
You just have to.
Tom Hanks.
Rudy Gobert, Donovan, Mitch.
This is just the tip of the iceberg.
I'm not saying it's going to get worse and these are end of days.
Although I do kind of tend toward being one of those end of days guys.
I probably shouldn't bring that up here.
Basically only two people know it.
My wife and my brother.
They know I'm one of these guys who's kind of sort of paranoid.
I'll never project that.
I'll never talk about it with others.
But they know, yeah, I kind of tend to these end of days movies day after tomorrow.
Jake Gyllenhaal. You guys remember that? Deep Impact. Weirdly, I love those movies. Armageddon.
Last night I'm flipping around because there's nothing on sports to watch.
And I stumble upon PBS. Thank you, Dad, for pushing me toward PBS. And there was something that I highly recommend.
You can go watch a little bit of it on YouTube. It's called the American Experience, Influenza 1918.
Okay? And, you know, I'm watching it. I'm preparing for this show.
And my wife is listening to some of this. She turns over, is like,
Jason, don't watch this before you go to bed.
I know you.
You probably shouldn't be watching this.
But I'm not going to be.
I'm not going to freak out.
This is just where we are now.
And we're going to be here for three or four weeks.
America's probably going to shut down.
I think the NBA will come back in 30 days.
Adam Silver spoke last night talking about at least 30 days.
And folks, let's be realistic.
NBA should probably punt on the regular season and go right into the playoffs.
which would hugely favor the Lakers.
I'll tell you why in about five minutes.
But an alternative is, hey, maybe we extend the season 30 days,
push back to draft, push back free agency,
and another topic we're going to get into.
Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving,
you guys coming back if the season is extended?
What about Clay Thompson?
If the season's extended?
I mean, obviously the Warriors are way out of it.
They can't get in the playoff picture.
But these are things we can actually talk about in the sports world
because we're here for you.
going anywhere. Fox Sports Radio, Iheart Radio. We will be on everyday talking sports,
talking about life. You know, everybody's going to know somebody out there who has the coronavirus.
You got to be healthy. You got to be smart. Folks, I do want to wrap up here with this story.
You know, I hosted The Hurt on January 1st to start the new year. Very exciting. And I told
this story and a couple people loved it. And it goes back to my son, again, the third grader.
you know, I sign him up for jujitsu.
And they got this sensei in class talking before class,
kind of teaching the kids about bullying and all this stuff.
And the sensei tells a story.
He says, so there's this group of kids walking down the street to the dojo, right?
And they come upon the corner of the street to cross.
And there's a man with a horse on the corner.
And, of course, this large group of kids walking to the dojo kind of surprise the horse.
So the horse involuntarily kicks back.
The horse just kicks back.
And the kid at the front of the jujitsu line,
you know, the best student, dodges the horse kick.
Just sideways, just dodges it.
And everybody's like, oh my gosh, he's so amazing.
Wait till we tell the sensei this.
So the kids get to the dojo.
And they're like, Sensei, you're not going to believe this story.
This horse kicked back.
And little Johnny, he dodged it.
It was amazing.
You had to see it.
Too bad we didn't get it on video.
We could have to put it on TikTok.
Ha, ha, ha.
And the dojo goes silent.
The sensei has this look on his face.
Just disdain.
He's just unhappy.
And he goes, if he was my star student, he would have been on the other side of the street.
And they're all like, whoa.
Whoa, we didn't consider that.
The lesson, of course, avoid trouble.
Be smart.
Just be smart out there.
That's all we're saying.
You don't need to be a hero and be like, ah, coronavirus.
I'm going to shake hands.
I'm going to touch door handles.
I mean, listen, my wife reminded me,
this is going to sound really bad.
I haven't touched a door handle probably in five or six years.
I'm using my feet to open doors.
I'm using a paper towel.
I don't know if other people are washing their hands.
I'm just telling you guys out there, be smart.
Coming up next year on the herd, Fox Sports Radio, IHeart Radio.
So let's say the NBA does continue 30 days from now.
The regular season finishes out.
Then they extend the season into July.
Do you know who that favors more than anybody else in the NBA?
That's next here on Fox Sports Radio.
Be sure to catch live editions of the herd weekdays in noon Eastern, 9 a.m. Pacific on Fox Sports Radio,
FS1 and the IHeart Radio app.

Welcome to my new podcast, Learn the Hardway with me, your host, and your favorite therapist,
Kear Games. And in recognition of mental health awareness month, I'm bringing over a decade of
my own experience in the mental health field and conversations with so many incredible guests.
I'm talking, Tripp Fontaine, Ryan Clark. Sometimes when we're in the pursuit of the thing,
we get so wrapped up in the chase
that we don't realize that we
are in possession of the thing
and we're still chasing it
and we don't know when we've done enough
because people scoreboard watch
life becomes about wins and losses
Steve Burns, Dustin Ross
because you find it important to be a good person
while you hear on earth
or are you a good person because you're afraid
because that's two different intentions bro
absolutely and that's two different levels of trust
I want you to just really be a good person

What's up, guys? This is Clever Taylor the 4th. And on my podcast, The Cliverts Show, I'm bringing you conversations about all kinds of stuff.
Like being an internet famous referee. We're in the middle of a game. This linebacker, this linebacker walks up to me. He goes, hey, ref, my mom wants you to.
wave at her. What?
Come out.
Quarterback on office blue of 42.
Hey, Rhett, Mom, I want you to wave at her.
What?
Hey, Ms. Parker.
Listen to the Cliverts show on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcast, or wherever you get your
podcast.
What's up, fam?
It's Isaiah Thomas.
And I'm C.J. Toledano, and our podcast, Point Game is about defying the odds.
Like LeBron heading into the playoffs without Luca and Austin Reed.
and finding ways to win no matter what.
He's the smartest player to ever play the game.
His IQ is at a level that we've never seen before.
And he knows.
Without Luca and Austin Reeves,
I got to manipulate the game.
We get a player's perspective on the challenges of the playoffs.
I think Joker's going to be exhausted this series
because when they don't have Rudy in the lineup,
he has to really guard guys like Nas Reid.
He has to guard Julius Randall.
And then he has to give us everything he gives us
on the night-to-night basis on offense.
And when IT's friends stopped by like Quentin Richardson,
we dive into some playoff history too.
Steve Nash would get that thing.
That man, hell get the flying.
He running up the court, licking his fingers,
why he got the ball.
Like, you go through a training camp with that, Isaiah.
You figure it out real quick.
Get your ass up and down the court,
and you're going to get the ball.
So listen to Point Game on the IHeart Radio app,
Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.
Back here on the herd,
Jason McIntyre, in for Colin Cowherd.
history stuff, folks. This is historic. Here's the call in number 1-800-29-2-5150. We have an intern,
I believe her name is Michelle taking calls. I've butchered that already. Isabel taking calls.
Do you own a rent-your-home? Sure you do. Fortunately, Geico makes it easy to bundle your home
and auto insurance. It's a good thing too, because having a home is hard work. Go to geico.com,
get a quote, and see how much you could save. Geico.com. Easy.
You know, it points here, folks, we're just going to take the show in wild places.
Where I wouldn't expect to go, based on stuff you guys send me.
Somebody just sent in a great TV recommendation on social media.
Jason, you should check out The Last Ship.
I think it's called The Last Ship on TNT.
Bro, I've already seen that show.
I've seen the series.
We are taking Netflix recommendations.
We'll do a whole segment on that.
Goulet will chime in with his.
Greg Tuwey as well here in the studio.
Listen, we're not going anywhere.
We're here, folks.
Fox Sports Radio.
It's going to be fun.
We're going to try to make it fun.
Sports is fun, right?
And again, I mentioned him in the first segment.
Rudy Gobert was the tipping point here in America.
Personally, I think in the long term, in the big picture, Rudy Gobert will be looked at as, I don't know if maybe heroes a bit strong, but he will be looked at favorably.
because he was the one that got everybody to wake the hell up here in America to the coronavirus,
basically put a halt to everything.
And did he save lives?
Yeah, I think you can argue here in the next coming couple weeks.
You're going to see that this, you know, containment is futile at this point.
So the only way is to just stop, stop going to concert, stop going out in public,
just sporting events.
And when there's no sporting events, you can't go out.
So I think Rudy Gobert quickly got us to a point where we realized,
hey, we got to shut it down.
We should shut down the NCAA tournament, and yes,
there's like an 18% chance I'm going to cry
when I'm talking about the NCAA tournament later in the show.
Folks, I don't think you realize how much I love that thing.
I was showing my kid one shining moment from 2019 last night,
and my kids are like, Dad, you look sad.
I'm like, guys, this is one of the most fun things every year.
I gamble on like 85% of the games.
Two years ago, I had my best run ever.
I'm not to go to Vegas, the first.
weekend guy, Goulet has tickets to Vegas.
We'll talk to him soon to find out if he's going to hold up that end and still go with no games.
Who knows if Vegas will even be open.
But hopefully the NBA will return in 30 days, as Adam Silver said last night.
And I think, and again, we still don't know if they're going to continue the regular season.
There's a 15-ish game left.
Or if they're just going to cut right to the playoffs.
But I can confidently say this.
if they go right to the playoffs,
this would be the seating in the West.
Lakers Grizzlies in the first round,
you got to figure Lakers dust them in four, maybe five.
Then the Lakers, because of a late rocket swoon
and the Thunder won three in a row,
the Lakers would face the winner of the Jazz or Thunder in the first round.
Now, that to me is massive.
The one team in the West outside of the Clippers
that I am remotely afraid of, if I'm the Lakers,
are the Houston Rockets.
and that's because of the high variance due to the three-pointers.
You guys know they're averaging 44.3-point attempts a game.
You get hot for a few games, boom, you're in trouble if you're the Lakers.
The Rockets can go on a tear.
Now, the opposite is true.
Rockets could go out in five.
If they missed 27 threes in a row like they did against the Warriors,
rockets will be toast.
But that's a team that scares me.
They're not in the Lakers bracket now.
The Clippers would have to play them.
And I think, you know, that's kind of a tough series could be for the paper clips.
They'd have to face Luca Donchich and then James Harden.
You know, for me, that's the third and fourth, you know, MVP guys in the league this year.
So I think this layoff from a seating standpoint favors the Lakers.
And then from a rest standpoint, LeBron James, 35 years old.
I think he's third all-time in the NBA history in minutes played.
He's averaging 25, 10, and 7.
and you're going to give him a month off,
I think LeBron gets helped by this layoff
more than any other team in the league.
But I can understand Clippers fans will say,
well, we haven't been healthy all year.
We're going to have Paul George, Pat Beverly,
everybody's going to be back.
That's fine.
Lakers just beat you guys healthy.
Okay.
In the East, two things, three actually jump out.
Number one, is Ben Simmons going to be healthy
with this 30-day layoff?
I still am on the Ben Simmons train.
I guess I'm on Ben Simmons Island at this.
point, you know, all alone, please send help.
I think Ben Simmons is still a top 15 player in the league.
I think if he comes back, Sixers can be dangerous.
Also, Celtics, Kemble Walker, if he comes back after the 30-day layoff, we know he's had
some nagging knee injuries.
But the big one that nobody knows is Kyrie Irving and Kevin Durant.
So the Nets just fired their coach.
A lot of the blame is being placed on Kyrie and KD.
Is that fair?
I don't know.
But Kevin Durant, if the season's postponed a month, 30 days as Adam Silver said,
Kevin Durant now will have about a year in between the Achilles injury.
Kyrie Irving, can he return?
Suddenly the Nets is a seven seed.
Oh, hello.
Are they dangerous?
I'm still the only guy on planet Earth who doesn't think the bucks are coming out of the east.
My preseason pick for the NBA finals was Celtics.
Lakers. Go check out my Instagram. It's on there. I promise you nobody else had that. If that happens, yes, I will be doing a victory lap. All right. So much more to talk about from a sports angle. You know, listen, injuries in baseball. Baseball postponed two weeks. Yankee fans, kind of excited. Good for the Yankees. Good for Aaron Judge. All right. So coming up now, we are going to go to Herdline News with, I believe Colin refers to him as veteran newsman, John Goulet.
No, no, no, no, no.
Turn on the news.
This is the herd line news.
So Jason, we had some breaking news earlier this morning.
The Masters has now been postponed.
The chairman of Augusta National, Fred Ridley said,
quote, ultimately the health and well-being of everyone associated with these events
and citizens of Augusta community led us to this decision.
We hope this postponement puts us in the best position to safely host the Masters tournament
and our amateur events at some later date.
The Masters, which dates back to 1934, has never been played outside of March or April,
and has really been the second weekend in April for a long time now.
This comes after last night's announcement that the Players' Championship will be canceled
after they completed the first round on Thursday.
So all PGA Tour events now up to the Masters are canceled.
The Masters is not canceled. It's postponed.
I'm sure they'll do it at some point this year, but who knows when.
What is your reaction to the Masters being the latest major event move?
Well, you had a great point in the meeting this morning about how you identify spring with three basic events.
Do you want to tell everybody what those are?
I basically feel like they canceled spring.
Spring is MLB opening day, the NCAA tournament, and the Masters.
Those are the three things I think of when I think of spring, and they're all gone.
Yeah.
And I feel like there.
Now, part of it is the weather here in L.A.
It's dark and rainy and kind of gloomy.
But it just feels like they canceled, you know, you're from the East Coast, the Northeast like I am.
those events signal good weather is coming.
It's about to be nice, and those are not happening anymore.
Nothing's happening.
I mean, I think that's spot on.
That's a great point.
So the NBA is obviously on hiatus after Rudy Gobert tested positive for the coronavirus.
Last night, NBA Commissioner Adam Silver spoke with the guys on TNT about how long this break could last.
This hiatus will be most likely at least 30 days.
I mean, and we don't know enough, as you've all said, to be more specific than that.
But we wanted to give direction to our players and teams and to our fans that this is going to be roughly at least a month.
So that's, I mean, that's 30 days at best is when the NBA is coming back.
How would you like to see the NBA comeback?
Do you want to just start with the playoffs?
Do you want to have them a few games?
We talked yesterday on the show with Colin about how, is this an opportunity to maybe shorten things?
Do you go, we're going to start with the playoffs and we're going to go three game first,
round five game second or do you do it do if it ends up being longer do you stay we're not going
to do 16 playoff teams we're going to do the top 12 or we're going to the top eight whatever it may
be like is this an opportunity to maybe do something different to the playoffs or do you just want to
come back play a few games and do the normal 16 team all seven game series playoffs yeah that's a
you know i hadn't thought about shortening the series if you jump right into the playoffs gulae
yeah and you don't do any regular season i mean players could be rusty
That's tough to do a short series like that.
But let's say it does become a two-month layoff,
are you really going to have some regular season games?
I mean, remember, the playoffs take almost two months normally.
Yeah.
I don't know if you can do that.
And then I looked this up.
So the Democratic National Convention host city, of course, is Milwaukee.
It's being hosted where the Bucks play play play playoff games.
That is in the middle of July.
If you push it back 30 days and the Bucks get to the finals,
now you've got a massive scheduling conflict.
I don't know.
My gut tells me, and again, we're early in this process.
I would just say, let's start the playoffs when we return.
Okay.
I would just jump right into the playoffs, seated as it is now.
I know that favors the Lakers.
Everybody thinks I'm a Lakers homer.
They have a five and a half game lead over the second seat.
They have the one C. It doesn't matter.
It's a bummer if you're chasing the eight seed, but really you're fighting to get in to get swept by the Lakers or the Bucks or what?
So what is it really matter?
So I give the teams.
a week of practice. And remember, you know, using China as a template, they had about five or six
weeks of nobody doing anything, nobody going out. And now everybody's returning to normalcy over there.
And they, you know, I'm not saying the coronavirus is stamped out, but it's certainly flattened
out. The Chinese basketball, I think it's the CBA is their basketball league. They were off
for about 10 weeks. They're coming back now, but they've been off for about 10 weeks.
I don't know about you, Goulet. I'm cool with no fans in the stadium for some of these games.
I just want the games.
Yeah, if it's a choice between not playing or that, I will gladly take that.
I'm curious to hear how it would sound.
It might be kind of a bummer, but I'd rather see them play in an empty arena than not play at all.
100%.
And finally, the last remaining major sporting event planned for this weekend was the NASCAR race at Atlanta.
They were going to run it without fans, but obviously drivers are isolated in their cars when they drive.
They're fairly safe.
That plan has now changed.
This weekend's races are postponed, as well as next weekend's races in Miami.
I was going to come in and ask you, with it being the last sporting event,
if you were going to bet on the race, you like to bet.
I do.
I do too.
If it's the only event going on, I figure, like,
it was going to be the most gambled on NASCAR race in the history of time.
Yes, probably.
I was even going to give you some good picks for the weekend.
Oh, I'm sure you have them.
I have a few, but now that is not happening.
NASCAR and golf felt like the last two things you could do
because you could really isolate the athletes, right?
Golfers could play alone just a caddy.
Drivers are obviously alone in their cars.
They're wearing helmets and spot.
bodysuits already.
So what is your reaction to this?
The IndyCar race was also canceled.
There is literally nothing this weekend.
What are you going to do?
You know, I think we could build the entire segment out of that soon.
But I will be doing a lot of board games with my family.
We will be playing much more Xbox than we ever have.
And Goulet, like I was showing my kids the Herschel Walker workout routine.
You remember how he would do a thousand push-ups a day and sit-ups?
I might try that because I'm not going to be going to the gym.
I'll go stir crazy if I do nothing and I just sit at home.
You're going to go.
Three weeks, you're going to be absolutely ripped, won't you?
I don't know if I'll be ripped, but I had a buddy send me the book Sapiens.
Have you read that?
Apparently, it's tremendous.
So I just started to dig into that last night.
So some reading, you know, my church, do we go to as often as possible outside of football season?
That has now been canceled.
So it's essentially video games, working out at home, playing board games.
I'm curious if we could have some single people call in.
What are you guys going to do?
Home Solo.
That's got to be difficult.
But, all right, thank you, Goulet.
Well, that's the news.
And thanks for stopping by.
The Herd Lie News.
All right, let's bring in our first guest here on the herd today, Friday the 13th.
He writes for Yahoo.
I've known him for many, many years.
And he had a good column yesterday.
Sports are usually an escape.
But now we must settle into life without them.
Dan Wetzel, columnist at Yahoo Sports.
Dan, good morning or good afternoon. How are you?
I'm all right, Jason. How are you doing?
Yeah, I'm, can I use the word crestfallen?
Usually this weekend, Dan, you know you're a big college hoops guy.
You wrote a book on recruiting back in the day.
Like, this is like the best time of year for college basketball, and there's no games anywhere.
None. Nothing's happening.
Well, Dad, nothing's happening at all.
And, you know, I completely understand the decisions.
of that.
What I feel
unfortunate,
what I feel is unfortunate.
Again,
this isn't criticizing decisions,
but
you need distractions as a society.
During World War II,
all the athletes,
you know,
Ted Williams and these guys,
they all volunteered for the military
went and fought,
but they kept major league baseball going
with,
you know,
older guys at 45-year-olds
playing and things like that,
just in an effort to keep games going.
And I remember they had the women's baseball league,
which they made a movie out of, which I guess, you know,
Gina Day or, you know, whatever.
Tom Hanks, I think a league of their own?
Yeah.
A league of their own, yeah, because society needs, like, the morale boost,
the distractions, the story, just whatever.
Because otherwise, you know, you don't,
You know, you just need it.
I mean, otherwise you're spending your time worrying about everything.
And we're not going to have that right now.
I don't know what this is, but this feels to me like the stories.
My mom would tell growing up in New York City during World War II where, you know, lights, you know,
you couldn't have lights on at night or, you know, there was some rationing.
And there's just huge sacrifices that people made because, you know,
that was what was going on.
And, you know, it feels like we're barreling towards that where nothing is going to be normal.
And that is probably what is needed.
And that's, you know, again, that's fine.
But, you know, not to have that distraction that I think societies have always said, hey, it's good to have something.
Well, there's, you know, I mean, we certainly have much more ability to watch television.
and, you know, I think things will probably pop up.
But if there was a way to stage these sports events, and there isn't,
but if there was, it would be really helpful.
Yeah, we'll talk with Dan Wetzel Yahoo Sports.
They're going, is the market crashing today, or is there how many more cases are out there,
maybe you'll lose yourself for an hour and watching a 12-by-5, you know, 12 upset of 5-seat or something like that.
And we just don't have it.
So we're going to do this one without sports.
Fortunately, I think this war is not going to last for years, and it's not World War II, but it's certainly something, the most dramatic thing to happen potentially in my life.
The only other one really would be 9-11.
Yeah.
And Dan, you know, you mentioned 9-11.
In the post-9-11, we still had sports.
NFL baseball postseason came up.
Like, we had stuff as a distraction.
I would say this, sadly, the distraction now, Dan, is going to be social media.
and you know how much of a sewer that can be with negativity.
You've got all these guys pushing this.
It's not a big deal.
This is nothing big.
This is just the flu.
And I think social media hurts more than anything because you got people cooped up at home.
All they're doing is going on social media.
Instead of post 9-11, you turn on the news where they were kind of the gatekeepers.
There's no gatekeeper anymore.
The horse is out of the barn and anybody can say anything and it gets 50,000 likes.
And people take it as gospel.
It's dangerous.
Yeah, there's so much misinformation.
There's so much extremes.
There's so many different things you hear.
And you just hear stuff that can either terrify you or make you – it's just – I don't know.
So, Dan, the masters –
What I think is true because I don't know that it's true, right?
I'm not – anything I say today, don't believe because I'm not the coronavirus expert, right?
We have one of those coming up shortly.
But, Dan, let me ask you.
It's not me.
Yeah.
You're into sports.
It just feels like everything switched in the last couple days.
Like the America today is not America three days ago.
100%.
And then you go, well, what's the America in three days from now?
I don't know.
Nobody knows.
That's the hardest part.
I even think like, I remember the day of September 11th feeling one of the rare times of my life,
I was like, I don't know what's going to happen next.
Like, are they going to fly planes into L.A. tomorrow?
Or is there something we're under attack?
But very quickly it felt like, okay, this is a big one shot.
And this is horrific and this is tragic.
But you didn't fear going out and getting a, you know, going to a sandwich shop.
Yeah.
Dan, let me ask you this.
Something like that.
And now it's like, I don't know.
And so look, I hope, beyond hope that this is all overblown.
It would be the best thing ever.
But it doesn't feel that way.
And increasingly, you're getting that.
So we don't have sports.
I mean, it's not just even the pro sports are one thing,
and they're important.
There's not going to be high school sports.
You know, in a lot of towns and, you know, families,
like kids with you want to play high school sports,
or that's a rallying point for a town.
There's not going to be youth sports.
I mean, my kids play soccer.
We had a soccer tournament canceled this weekend.
I mean, 11-year-olds playing outdoors.
Can't do it.
that's some extreme measures, but I imagine necessary.
I'm fine with it.
Let me ask you this, Dan.
Rudy Gobert, to me, was the tipping point here in America.
Well, him and Tom Hanks came back to back.
But it felt like everything ramped up quickly after that.
You know, I open the show saying I think history will be kind to Rudy Gobert.
He's getting crushed on social media.
People are hammering him now.
And I get that.
But in the long run, maybe him being the guy.
to, you know, test positive and be out there, shut everything down before this really, really got bad and ugly.
Well, it's certainly a possibility that's true, and I hope that is true.
I think also Adam Silver, I'm actually working on something right now.
Adam Silver came out with such a level of, he made a call and changed everything.
I word less than 48 hours ago, he made that call.
To cancel the NBA season, or postpone it.
I mean, that was less than 48 hours ago, and it doesn't feel, that feels like weeks ago, right?
Yeah.
At the time, they were playing NBA games, and he just came out, and I think at sports fans, we know whether you like all his decisions or not,
Adam Silver is a very smart man.
He's very good at conveying his point.
He's very reassuring that you sit there and go, this is a very intelligent person.
He's made a very learned guess because it's all, you know,
but that's what you kind of look for in leadership.
And I think Adam Silver had a major role in changing that because right after that,
everything was dominole.
Now maybe it would have happened anyway.
You know, you're seeing schools close.
I don't think there's going to be school this year.
I don't think there's going to be all sorts of stuff that's happening.
Maybe that would have happened anyway.
But he was certainly one of the first.
And there may have been other decisions that I didn't see.
Obviously, like closing south by southwest or
different festivals and things, but the NBA doing that was a real jolt like, holy crap, this is
serious. This is really serious. And I don't know that we were getting that on Tuesday.
Yeah. And, you know, so go bear and, and I hope it's effective. You know, I mean, I think,
obviously you understand that the need to slow the spread of the disease so that hospitals don't
get absolutely overwhelmed. And, you know, if there's X number of patients and it's spread out over two
month, it's a lot better than the next number of patients coming in in one week.
So that could be one role we're in.
Dan Wetzel, Yahoo Sports.
Dan, thank you for taking the time.
Great column.
Keep up to go.
When is this Adam Silver Piece dropping?
I don't know.
Probably later tonight.
Okay.
All right, Dan Wetzel, everybody.
Thank you for your time, Dan.
And stay safe and remember to clean your hands.
Wash your hands every day.
All right.
Dan Wetzel, Yahoo Sports.
Good writer.
I've known him for a long time.
It's just a level-headed.
guy and I like his work.
All right, coming up next here on Fox Sports Radio, The Herd, again, Jason McIntyre filling
in for Colin Cowherd.
Keep it locked, folks.
Our infectious disease expert is 15 minutes away.
But coming up next, we'll do a little more in positivity in the sports world in the wake
of the coronavirus.
Be sure to catch live editions of the herd weekdays in noon Eastern 9 a.m. Pacific.
Last night, a blown call changed a game.

Highlights are trending, opinions are flying, and nobody's telling you exactly what happened.
That's where Sports Slice comes in.
I'm Timbo.

From viral moments to historic games, from buzzer beaters to controversial calls, we break it down,
give you context and ask the questions everybody wants answered.
Sports Slice brings you closer to the action with stories told by the people who live them.

Welcome to my new podcast, Learn the Hardway with me, your host, and your favorite therapist, Kear Games.
And in recognition of mental health awareness month, I'm bringing over a decade of my own experience in the mental health field and conversations.
with so many incredible guests.
I'm talking.
Tripp Fontaine, Ryan Clark.
Sometimes when we're in the pursuit of the thing,
we get so wrapped up in the chase
that we don't realize that we are in possession of the thing
and we're still chasing it
and we don't know when we've done enough.
Because people scoreboard watch.
Life becomes about wins and losses.
Steve Burns, Dustin Ross,
because you find it important to be a good person
while you hear on earth?
Are you a good person because you're afraid?
Because that's two different intentions, bro.
Absolutely. And that's two different levels of trust. I want you to just really be a good person.
Join me, Kear Gaines, is we have real conversations about healing, growth, fatherhood, pressure, and purpose on my new podcast, Learn the Hardway.

What's up, guys? This is Clivert Taylor the Fourth. And on my podcast, The Cliverts Show, I'm bringing you conversations about all kinds of stuff.
Like being an internet famous referee. We're in the middle of a game.
This linebacker walks up to me, he goes, hey, ref, my mom wants you to wave at her.
What?
Time out.
Quarterback on office blue of 42.
Hey, rec, my mama want you to wave at her.
What?
Hey, Ms. Parker.
Listen to the Clippers show on the Iheart radio app, Apple Podcast, or wherever you get your podcast.
What's up, fam?
This Isaiah Thomas.
And I'm C.J. Toledano, and our podcast Point Game is about Default.
ifying the odds.
Like LeBron heading into the playoffs without Luca and Austin Reed.
And finding ways to win no matter what.
He's the smartest player to ever play the game.
His IQ is at a level that we've never seen before.
And he knows without Luca and Austin Reeves,
I got to manipulate the game.
We get a player's perspective on the challenges of the playoffs.
I think Joker's going to be exhausted this series
because when they don't have Rudy in the lineup,
he has to really guard guys like Nas Reid.
He has to guard Julius Randall.
And then he has to give us everything he gives us on the night-to-night basis on offense.
And when IT's friends stop by, like Quentin Richardson, we dive into some playoff history too.
Steve Nash would get that thing.
That man, hell get the flying.
He running up the court, licking his fingers why he got the ball.
Like, after you go through a training camp with that, Isaiah, you figure it out real quick.
Get your ass up and down the court, and you're going to get the ball.
So listen to Point Game on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.
Back here on the herd, Fox Sports Radio.
I'm Jason McIntyre in for Colin.
Colin back on Monday.
We're not going anywhere.
Fox Sports Radio will be here to help get you through this sportsless month of March.
Got a lot of fun stuff to talk about later in the show.
And remember, folks, in about 10 to 12 minutes, we have a John Hopkins senior scholar on health security coming on to talk about what you're
you should and should have to do for the coronavirus situation. I got a lot of questions. I mean,
you know, I like to play pickup basketball. Is that dumb right now? What about, what about hot yoga?
Can I go do hot yoga? Is that advice? Because I dropped my hot yoga class Thursday. I was going to go.
You know, I know, she's kind of a quasi big deal on Instagram. And we message it and I was like,
listen, I hate to do this. I haven't been to your class in a month. But I got to drop it. Is that risky?
or should I just, can you go about your day?
So we'll answer those questions.
We have a college basketball coach of a top 10 team coming on later in the show,
top 10 this year and now they're seasons down the toilet.
It's really unfortunate.
And also another guest is a reporter who has been very close to the Utah Jazz
during this Rudy Gobert situation.
So we got a loaded show on a personal level.
I got to say, all sports are canceled for my kids.
school closed.
Folks, we're headed toward a situation like Italy, like China,
where they just shut it down to stop the spread of this disease.
And I do have my big question, you know, we got Greg Tui in here.
He's, you know, been a regular with Colin, works on the show, and he's got kids.
And I was asking, like, Greg, what are you going to do?
I know you have a spring break trip coming up.
Like, what do you do?
What's the move?
How are you handling this?
You know, it's fun.
It's the great unknown.
Right? Like you're just taking it day by day like everybody else, but you're thinking about like, okay, we have no baseball this weekend.
I mean, they had a full slate of games. Seasons on hiatus. So there's no baseball. You know, there's no school next week. So like, what are you doing? And then, yeah, we have a trip for Hawaii playing in April where we haven't canceled yet. But like, do you cancel it? I mean, do you wait? Do you wait until the end and try to get, what if you can't get a full refund and you get screwed on that and you don't want to go?
There's just so much unknown right now.
We actually booked a trip to Italy, believe it or not.
Six months ago, there's a baller trip to Italy, never really done Europe.
We're going to bring the kids over two weeks.
And we started to look into how do we get our money back?
You know, what's the refunds policy?
Because it doesn't look like Italy is happening right now.
Luckily, we have a few months to delay this.
You know, and Greg mentioned his family and the kids.
I'm a little worried about the listeners who don't have family around,
who don't have a significant other or kids to spend this time with.
You can't be cooped up.
You don't want to lose your mind.
I mean, you can't go to bars and pick up girls, right?
I will say this.
If you have cable, obviously don't cut cable.
That would be foolish.
The movie Hall Pass has been on a lot lately.
Goulete, have you seen Hall Pass?
Oh, my gosh.
A lot.
Have you seen Hall Pass?
Yes, okay.
Hall Pass is highly recommended.
And there's a scene, Jason Sadekis, a hall pass, of course, your wife gives you a hall pass to go hook up with girls for a week or whatever just to get it out of your system.
I mean, it's silly.
Guys talk about it.
It's not realistic.
Mostly not realistic.
And Jason Sadekis goes up to this girl and goes, do you know how much a polar bear weighs?
She goes, no.
He goes, enough to break the ice.
Hi, how are you?
It's a great big guy.
And I'm watching the movie.
And I just start cracking up.
because it's like, oh, I'm not thinking about coronavirus and death and all this negativity.
I'm thinking about funny lines.
Now, listen, Hall Pass has a lot of inappropriate lines I cannot repeat on this show.
But listen, I'm going to tell you, I think it's one of the funniest movies of the last decade.
You know, and I probably should ask the young intern here, who's a millennial and probably is up on all the funny stuff.
But, you know, if you're looking for movies to watch on Netflix, I'm telling you, definitely look up.
Paul Pass.
And maybe we'll put a list together for later in the show.
I'm watching Ozark.
I know you guys have certainly seen Ozark.
Great show.
It's a little dark and negative.
I'm sure you guys would agree, Goulet, you've seen.
It is, yes.
Very dark.
Yeah, okay, very dark.
Let's maybe avoid Ozark.
What's the one with the guy from the office?
Krasinski, he's like in a Save the World type of...
Jack Ryan.
Jack Ryan.
Fantastic series.
The second season, we just wrapped up amazing.
highly recommend.
So like in these days
where you're just sitting there,
staring at the ceiling,
pondering the meaning of life,
trying to stay off TikTok and Twitter
and all that nonsense,
I just try to be positive.
This isn't going to last forever.
It's basically, you know, as our last guest said,
four days ago, America was very, very different
than it is today.
And guess what? Monday?
It's probably going to be very, very, very
different than it is today.
I mean, I'm going to go ahead and assume that we are going to be what Italy's done and say,
we're closing gyms, we're closing restaurants, and the places that are going to be open are
supermarkets and pharmacies.
That's probably where we're headed.
And that's not being super negative.
That's just being realistic.
The sooner we do this, we kind of get it over with, right?
within three, four weeks, hopefully, the disease has kind of flattened out.
We're being a lot more socially conscious, keeping our distance.
Now, that's easy for me to say in L.A. I'm in my car.
But I had lived in New York. I met my wife in New York. Actually, at a bar, New York City.
Yeah, it's a lot tougher on the subway navigating the streets.
Out here, I'm in my car. I'm not talking anybody. I'm avoiding contact.
So all I'm preaching is to be safe. Obviously, listen to a lot of Foxxie.
Sports Radio. You know what? Maybe we'll do the meaning of life. Goulet and two of you,
get ready. What is the meaning of life? Third hour, we'll tackle that. But coming up next year
on The Herd, I don't think I've been this excited for a guest. Maybe in my four-year history
of radio, a John Hopkins specialist on health security coming on the show, he will answer all
of your questions. Let me give out the number one more time. 800-292-5-150. The Herd. I'm Jason McIntyre.
in for Colin on this grim Friday the 13th.
But things are looking up, people.
Want more herd?

filling in for Colin Coward.
Colin back Monday here on Fox Sports Radio.
Colin's good.
I've been texting him all week, talking to him.
He's good after his fall.
I'm sure you guys talked extensively about that.
And this was a planned day off for Colin.
I was supposed to be in here talking NBA, NCAA tournament.
Other than Gottlieb, I'm the one guy who's always telling Colin about college basketball,
what he should be betting on.
Folks, I had.
futures tickets from last July on three teams.
Gonzaga, Michigan State, and Kansas from July.
Okay, I breathe, I love college basketball.
Fun little story before we get to our guest here.
The guy who makes a lot of hires at Fox Sports Radio, his name is Scott Shapiro, very
sharp guy.
He hired me, he said, because he saw me put together a list of the 50 best college
basketball players, like five years ago and was like, man, this guy loves sports.
But I also love staying on top of the news.
and folks, our next guest here is just an incredible smart man from Johns Hopkins Center for Health Security.
His name is Amish Adalja.
Amish, good morning.
How are you?
Doctor.
Good.
Good.
Thanks for having me.
Yeah, I heard you on the Sam Harris podcast, very informative of senior TV work.
And we just have so many questions, kind of from a sports world perspective, on the coronavirus.
And I got to ask you first, right out of the gate.
where do you think we are in the, you know, the disease?
Are we in the early stages?
Is this the middle round?
Is shutting down everything the way Italy has?
Is that the move to go?
And do you think that's where America's headed here in the coming days?
I do think that America is sort of in the early rounds right now.
We've had transmission probably going on at least since January here in local chains that really weren't recognized.
And I do think that the next couple of days into a week are going to be very critical.
to understand where we are on what's called the epidemic curve and see if we're on to a trajectory
that's hopefully not like Italy or something much different. And I do think that that's why
you're seeing a lot of this social distancing now because we're trying to kind of clamp down
on unnecessary contact between individuals to see if we can have some way of blunting this curve.
But it's very hard to know because we've had such a difficulty getting people tested for this.
And so we're kind of in many ways flying a little bit blind when it comes to knowing where we
are on the curve.
Yeah, doctor, I got to start with the testing next.
I mean, goodness, gracious.
I don't want to make it political, but can we figure out how to get on South Korea's level here
and start to test everybody quickly?
Because, you know, it seems like nobody's being tested in America.
And the concern then, of course, is if everybody's tested and everybody panics because they have it,
then the hospitals are flooded.
I don't know.
What do you feel, doctor, should be the strategy here for testing?
We definitely have to make it easier for doctors to order this test.
This isn't something that should take.
a lot of bureaucracy, a lot of paperwork, and a lot of headache for a doctor to order.
They should be able to order it on those patients they think merit the test.
That might not mean everybody, but it does mean that we need to be testing much more,
including some mild cases, at least for surveillance purposes,
so that we know where this is in the community.
We need to start getting people diagnosed and instructing them to isolate themselves
if they don't need to be hospitalized.
And this is something that's very simple, and that's probably what's behind South Korea's success,
that they were able to identify people and have themselves isolate,
and that caused their epidemic curve to be a little bit different,
and their case fatality rate is less than 1% there,
which I think is reassuring to people,
but we need to be able to do that to dampen the panic
and really get a handle on what's going on.
Okay, Dr. Adaja, let me ask the most basic question here,
and there's a lot of misinformation online, which is frustrating.
So if people could put down social media and listen to the doctor here,
number one, how is this spreading?
I mean, people want to know,
When I go to the grocery store, should I wear gloves to handle the grocery cart?
When I go to Costco, if somebody's sneezing, how dangerous is that?
Can I play basketball?
What about hot yoga?
Doctor, these are just the basics we're curious about.
Sure, so this is spreading through the respiratory route,
meaning through coughs and sneezes that emanate from someone's body.
They usually travel about six feet before being captured by the force of gravity and kind of falling to the earth.
So they're not something that's not something airborne like measles, for example.
There are risks of touching surfaces that someone has coughed or sneezed on,
and that's why we're emphasizing people wash their hands a lot.
That's not the main way it's transmitting, but it is one way that you can get it.
For each of those activities, you really have to think about your own risk factors,
what you might be facing in terms of health problems, what your age is,
and then kind of make those decisions for yourself.
In general, we want people to start thinking about all of their activities that are non-essential
and trying to think, can you modify them to put yourself less in contact with other people.
It's not that everyone that gets this is going to get seriously ill, but you don't want the virus
to use you as a chain of transmission to someone that might be more vulnerable.
So we're trying to get people to social distance as best as they can, but we know that this is disruptive
and that there's a cost of social distancing.
And sometimes that's hard from a policy standpoint, even from an individual standpoint,
to decide what the best action is to take.
All right.
We're talking with Dr. Amish, Adalja, Johns Hopkins.
Doctor, what about the basics thing like, hey, I get a package from Amazon?
You know, it's come domestically, not from China.
Is this something where I should wipe it down before I open the package?
What about getting my mail from the mailbox?
I mean, we don't know if the mailman has coronavirus.
Should be wiping down everything we open from the mail?
I suspect that the risk from mail and some packages is very, very low.
And I would probably tell people that's not going to be the way that you get infected.
I mean, obviously, you can find studies that show that this virus can remain viable on services.
But in most everyday life, I don't think you're going to find those types of things as mail or packages being major carriers for it,
or your mailman or male carrier being the main way that you're going to get exposed to this.
It's really cough and sneezes from other people.
and I think that people need to not necessarily become compulsive about all of that stuff,
but a lot of common sense with touching common surfaces like countertops,
that type of thing is what we're really talking about, less so the packages in the mail or anything like that,
although there's going to be panic and people are going to do that,
and it's going to be impossible to stop people from doing that.
But I don't think that's a major risk that I myself am worried about,
and I'm going to go check my mail as soon as I got off the phone with you.
All right, doctor.
How about this one?
We have a lot of young parents listening to this show who have kids playing youth sports, such as baseball or soccer.
Currently, the leagues are shutting down for a week or two to assess things.
But, you know, if you're playing youth baseball and someone grabs a bat and goes to, you know, the next guy up grabs a bat, like, is that a way it could be transferred?
Or, you know, do you recommend holding our kids out of youth sports for a few weeks?
Well, I think some of those decisions are being made for you because there's a lot of guidance going on.
from these youth, the leagues, and I was actually on the NCAA panel regarding March Madness,
the coronavirus task force.
So there are a lot of things that we're trying to do, and one of them is not necessarily
transmission between sports players, but we're congregating people together at games,
and we know that large gatherings can be vectors for spreading a virus.
So that's why we're trying, at least in the next two weeks, to try and see if these
activities have an impact and see where we are in terms of the outbreak.
I do think that there is probably minimal risk from using the activities.
a baseball bat that somebody else has used. Again, it's important to wash your hands and touch
your face less. But I think that these household objects are probably less likely responsible
for the spread than actual symptomatic individuals coughing or sneezing on each other.
All right, doctor, this is a perfect transition. You just said you were on the NCAA panel,
the coronavirus task force. Let me ask, was there consideration of postponing the tournament
versus canceling it outright? Because a lot of the, you know, obviously the senior
and the teams are devastated.
But was it cancellation or nothing?
No, if you look at our decision-making,
at first, our first decision-making
was to have the tournament without fans.
And then what happened was you saw multiple different schools
just closing and sending all their students home.
And remember, these athletes are students too.
So if those colleges were actually not operating,
it became less likely that this type of thing would be feasible.
And we, you know, in setting an example regarding mass gatherings
and that the final four tournament is a major mass gathering.
There was no desire for the NCAA to really put people at risk,
put players at risk, put officials at risk, put media people that might be there.
And we didn't want to contribute to the spread of this virus.
So it was the best decision to make based on where we are.
And I think that these things are definitely hard decisions to make,
and there's a lot of disruption that occurs.
But we really had to think about what would be best for,
the spread of this virus and trying to contain this virus. And a mass gathering like that could really
be a major advantage for this virus. And we did not want to be part of that. And I think that was the
best decision to make, given where we are in this outbreak. All right, Dr. Just two more. Let's pivot
from college to the NBA. So, you know, obviously in college basketball, college is stopped operating.
There's none of that in the NBA. Do you believe we will be back in 30 days? Or have you been asked anything
by the NBA regarding the coronavirus.
What are your thoughts on professional basketball here in America?
I wasn't not involved in any of the NBA decisions.
I think that has to be made.
It's going to be context-driven, so we need to see where we are in the outbreak
curve and what's going on in our communities, what we know about the severity of the disease.
I think we'll know a lot more even by a week from now, and I think that will help make
those decisions.
So I don't want to say whether or not, why don't it be right to have these types of
mass gatherings. I think for the next couple of weeks, though, it makes sense to try and see if we can
get some control of this virus by trying to do as much as we can voluntarily to limit the opportunities
the virus has to spread and have to revisit this. All right, doctor, final question. So the big
talking point is, hey, if you're young, you're going to be fine. If you're a kid, you're going to
be fine. It's only the old people to worry about. And the stat that keeps getting parroted out,
I'm not sure where it came from, is that 80% of the cases in China were mild.
Can you just speak to that and the age demographic breakdown?
What's true? What's false?
You know, and all that?
Sure.
So it is true that 80% of individuals who get this seem to have mild disease,
and it might be even higher because the Chinese data might be skewed.
But that doesn't mean that it's nothing.
It does mean that you're going to be out, that you're going to have a severe cold.
And the important thing is that you can transmit that on to other people who may not have that same risk profile that you have.
you have. So that's why it's important to really focus on that 20%, which tends to cluster in the
elderly, which tend to cluster in people with other medical conditions, and we're trying to not allow
the virus to use us as a transmission belt to them. That's why we're worried about this, because if you do
see case fatality ratios of 1%, that can be tremendous, because we know that our hospitals
operate near total capacity all the time, and that's what we're really worried about, is our hospitals
not being able to cope with the patient surge that they're going to get. And that's happened,
even with a virus that may have less than 1% mortality,
because if there is a large demand for ICU beds and hospital beds that we don't have,
that's going to really put the U.S. healthcare system in crisis.
And that's what we're worrying about.
We're trying to really not worry so much about the mild cases,
but the fact that those mild cases can get to people that are severe
and that are going to use hospital resources and require a lot of care to get through this,
and that's going to be too much for many hospitals to bear.
That's what we're worried about.
Thank you very much, Dr. Amish Adalja.
Great stuff.
He's a Johns Hopkins Center for Health Security Senior Scholar.
Doctor, good luck, and thank you very much.
Thank you.
Wow, that was extremely informative.
I feel like we should probably do a follow-up segment, Goulet, next.
I mean, I certainly have thoughts.
I was taking notes during that.
I hope the audience was listening.

Life becomes about wins and losses.
Steve Burns, Dustin Ross,
because you find it important to be a good person while you hear on Earth?
Are you a good person because you're afraid?
Because that's two different intentions, bro.
Absolutely.
And that's two different levels of trust.
I want you to just really be a good person.

And on my podcast, The Cliverts Show,
I'm bringing you conversations about all kinds of stuff,
like being an internet famous referee.
We're in the middle of a game.
This linebacker walks up to me, he goes,
A, ref, my mom wants you to wave at her.
What?
Time out.
Quarterback on office blue with 42.
Hey, ref, my mama want you to wave at her.
What?
Hey, miss.

What's up, fam? It's Isaiah Thomas.
And I'm C.J. Toledano, and our podcast Point Game is about defining the odds.
Like LeBron heading into the playoffs without Luca and Austin Reed.
And finding ways to win no matter what.
He's the smartest player to ever play the game.
His IQ is at a level that we've never seen before.
And he knows.
Without Luca and Austin Reeves, I got to manipulate the game.
We get a player's perspective on the challenges of the playoffs.
I think Joker's going to be exhausted this series
because when they don't have Rudy in the lineup,
he has to really guard guys like Nas Reid.
He has to guard Julius Randall.
And then he has to give us everything he gives us
on the night-to-night bases on offense.
And when IT's friends stop by, like Quentin Richardson,
we dive into some playoff history too.
Steve Nass would get that thing.
That man, hell get the flying.
He running up the court, licking his fingers,
why he got the ball, like,
After you go through a training camp with that Isaiah, you figure it out real quick.
Get your ass up and down the court, and you're going to get the ball.
So listen to Point Game on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcast.
Back here on the herd, Fox Sports Radio.
A little gin and juice.
Is that what you'll be drinking tonight, Goulet?
I don't know.
Maybe not exactly, but something along those lines.
I had a white claw last night.
Any white claw fans out there?
Goulet looks at me with that.
Oh, come on, dude.
I like beer.
I don't need a beer substitute.
What about wine?
You stocked up on wine at Costco?
I'm not, I'm stocked up on beer and liquor.
I'm good.
Beer, okay, we got liquor, beer, wine, and white cloth.
So I want a diverse selection.
Again, I'm not one of these alarmist guys.
I'm just air on the side of caution and safety.
And obviously stockpiling.
I'm not totally stockpiling toilet paper.
We just, we have a lot of roles.
You know, I'm sure you guys have seen that meme on Instagram where, you know, they go into their safe room and there's toilet paper all over the bathroom.
Not that dramatic.
But listen, the essentials matter.
And, you know, we just heard the infectious disease expert.
So many questions.
So based on that, Greg Toey, you have your Hawaii trip coming up.
When you hear the infectious disease expert from Johns Hopkins say, eh, you know, you're pretty.
Probably not likely to get it from opening a package in the mail or touching a door handle.
Does that make you feel any more confident about your upcoming trip to Hawaii?
No, not at all.
No, no.
You know, the thought of just going to LAX, I think, scares me.
You getting on a plane scares me.
And then what happens if you get over there and you can't get home?
You know, our luck, there's a shutdown, you know, and we can't get back.
Yeah, that would not.
Well, actually, you're stuck in Hawaii.
That's not terrible.
Well, listen, there was mentioned from the president recently about domestic travel.
Listen, if it gets worse, domestic travel could be shut.
Then you're stuck.
Again, you know, the con is, oh, I'm stuck in Hawaii.
Wow, this stinks.
You know, on a beach, you're not going to be, nobody's sneezing at you on when you're on the beach in Hawaii.
But I don't know.
You know, it's just very sobering yet informative stuff from the infectious disease expert.
You know, coming up here shortly, we will be talking to a reporter.
who was with the jazz.
Maybe his microphone got rubbed by Rudy Gobert.
You know, I do wonder, you know, to quickly pivot to Rudy Gobert,
how he's holding up mentally because you guys know,
and I've talked about this on my Saturday radio show,
social media can be very, very damaging when the mob comes after you.
You have to have a strong center, you have to be positive.
And I've been on the receiving end of some of it, you know,
by nature of the stuff I say,
opinions, whatever. And I posted this on my Instagram stories the other day. I went on a rant about
the Toronto Raptors. Oh, they're going back to the basement, back to the lottery when Kauai was
leaving. Obviously, they've been amazing this year. I think there's a second best record in the East.
So for about the last four months, people have been barraging me almost daily about how wrong I was.
Oh, no, I was wrong. I personally am not affected by these Yahoo's who are coming after me every day.
I had some clown
DM my wife
who has a private account
Hey child Jason
To lay off the raptors
Like dude you're not going to get to me
At the end of the day
I come home to my family
We hang out
I coach youth sports
For my kids
I do some reading
I watch shows of my wife
You know
I've got a life outside of sports
You guys the mob coming after me
I don't care
I'm not impacted by that
When Baker Mayfield comes after me
On social media
I don't care
I think I love
learn some of this from Colin who's like, dude, I just put down the phone when I'm at home.
None of it bothers me.
But a guy like Rudy Gobert, who is at the center of a global crisis now, he's going to be barraged.
And, you know, Rudy Gobert now is sick.
You know, he's got the coronavirus.
And now he's getting bombarded by a bunch of meatballs on social media.
You're an idiot, you know, with yours spelled incorrectly.
You ruin the NBA.
Like, I just hope Rudy Gobert has a strong center and is very grounded.
If you looked at the Donovan Mitchell Instagram post about how he has coronavirus,
it wasn't very favorable to Rudy Gober.
He didn't call him out by name.
But I just believe at the end of the day, like social media can get in your head.
I've seen it firsthand from people I know who have been eaten away by social media.
And folks, I just got to say, you can't let this get to you.
You've got to be strong.
And again, part of this is having a wife who is.
isn't really that into sports.
Yeah, she'll go to a Laker game.
She'll go to an NFL game.
Go to Super Bowl party, obviously.
But she's out of this stuff.
So I'm not coming to her with,
oh, man, I said this on social media
and people got angry.
She doesn't care.
Hey, Jason, can you go back to Costco
and pick up this, that, and the other,
and then take out the recycling?
And oh, yeah, did you pay our rent check?
And what about this?
Like, I don't have time to worry
about these gibrodis on social media.
I'm just hopeful for Rudy Gobert
that he can get through this.
because right now it's ugly for him.
Let's get to Heard Line News.
Turn on the news.
This is the Heard Line News.
So Jason, speaking of Rudy Gobert, he made his first public comments yesterday.
He's obviously, maybe appropriately or not, he is the face of the NBA shutting down right now.
He said, I have gone through so many emotions since learning of my diagnosis, mostly fear, anxiety, and embarrassment.
The first and most important thing is I would like to be.
to publicly apologize to the people that I may have endangered.
At the time, I had no idea I was even infected.
I was careless and make no excuse.
I hope my story serves as a warning and causes everyone to take this seriously.
I will do whatever I can to support using my experience as a way to educate others and prevent the spread of the virus.
Rudy Gobert will not be punished by the NBA for his actions.
That was brought up because not only did he touch those reporters, microphones and recorders,
which we all saw, but he reportedly was going around,
screwing around in the jazz locker room,
touching everybody's stuff.
That's more than just careless.
Yeah, that's bad.
How do you think, you mentioned fans on social media.
They're obviously going to be irrational.
That's fine.
How do you think other players and most importantly,
teammates are going to respond to him when they come back?
Not positively, that's for sure.
But I think at the end of the day, like I said in the opening of the show,
I do believe
Gobert will be looked at as man
It's kind of a good thing he tested positive
Would you agree?
Because I think it expedited everything
I mean we shut things down
As soon as Rudy Gobert announced it
Boom NBA
I think there may have been more sympathy
Had that video not existed
Yeah that's a good thing
But that video of him
Touching everyone's recorder is so
Like and listen obviously he didn't know
But I think that video makes it really tough
For us to feel bad for him
Assuming there's no like
He doesn't suffer any long-term health issues, which I doubt he would from this.
I'm sure he's fine.
But I think it's going to be tough for people to sympathize with him.
He's lucky only Donovan Mitchell caught it, right?
Yes.
Well, let me ask you this, Goulet.
So testing in America, according to the doctor we just spoke with, not a lot of people being tested.
Yeah.
coaching staff, you know, video court,
elders guys. Is that not
a little strange? It doesn't bother me as much
because I think it would remember, remember, they were
in Oklahoma City. Yes.
So part of it was we need to know
if these people can go home or not.
Because if they're infected, we need to quarantine them.
If they're not, they need to go. We can't just, I mean,
remember, they were hours, they left
the arena at what, 2 a.m. that night.
I think so. And they found out the game was canceled at 7.
So, I mean, at a certain point,
like, you can't hold them captive. You need to find
out if those people can travel or not.
So I'm okay with it.
I understand the, obviously there's some people that think it's kind of unfair.
Oh, because they're rich players.
Rich and famous.
But again, they would have been, I mean, they're just supposed to, what, live at the arena for, like, how long are they supposed to stay there for?
Yeah.
Listen, these are all quick.
This is stuff.
This is new territory.
How did Tom Hanks get tested so quickly?
Now, he is in Australia.
Tom Hanks.
He can get whatever he wants.
Yeah, yeah.
We need Tom Hanks back.
Castaway two.
One of the more unseen factors of these cancellations around the NBA and all of the NBA and all of,
sports are the hourly workers from the arenas, from security staffs, from event companies and all
that who are now don't have work. Mav's owner Mark Cuban mentioned right away when the games were
canceled that he was working on a program to make sure his guys still got paid. Maybe they would
do some charity work, but overall they would still get paychecks. Caves forward Kevin Love
took it a step further. He is pledging $100,000 to aid arena workers at the Caves Arena in
Cleveland. Love said in a text to ESPN. My hope.
hope is that others will step up.
There are very few stories right now that make you feel good about sports when you go online.
This is one of them.
And hopefully other owners and players will see this and follow.
We look at, oh, the NBA's canceled.
That sucks.
We don't get to watch and play.
But obviously, NBA players are financially equipped to sit out if they have to.
It's not a big deal.
Yeah.
The guys work in concessions.
The guys work in security.
They might not be.
And now they don't know when they're going to get a paycheck again.
So hopefully some more NBA players and other leagues will do the same thing that
Kevin Love did.
Kevin Love has become a great guy, by the way.
He has.
We've now publicly know he's an incredible, very caring and thoughtful individual.
Absolutely.
And, you know, quick note, I know I've been saying I don't want to go to restaurants.
I think you lay in the early morning meeting.
We talk like, you don't feel comfortable going out to eat right now, right?
I'm probably not.
I would probably keep it to maybe just have, I would have drinks somewhere.
I don't know if I would eat.
I would certainly not eat anything that requires me to pick up stuff with my hands.
Right.
And, you know, again, we talked about the workers in, you know, the Cleveland Cavaliers Arena and arenas around the league.
What about all these people who are going to get paid for NCAA tournament work?
What about restaurants?
Like, this is really sketchy for the economy.
I sure, I haven't looked at the Dow and stock market today, but I'm hopeful that this injection of money that's coming kind of staves things off because it's getting ugly out there, man.
Yeah.
And finally, NFL Free Agency is still scheduled to begin next week.
Sports!
legal tampering, hold on, the legal tampering period will start on the 16th and the actual free,
you can actually sign players.
I believe it's 4 p.m. Eastern on the 18th.
However, for a league source, the NFL is contemplating a delay in free agency.
The league wants to wait to make a decision until the CBA vote is closed, which is Saturday
night at midnight before making a decision about pushing it.
According to Mike Florio, pro football talk, the league is aware of the optics, what the country
is going through, doesn't love the idea of their players while everyone, like, you.
Like you said, the economy's in the tank.
People aren't working.
People are people sick.
People are stuck in their houses.
And a bunch of NFL players are signing $40 and $50 million contracts.
It doesn't look great.
Plus, you can't do the usual hold up the jersey, do the press conference thing because all the team facilities are closed.
I'm a little bum because this is, first of all, the one sports topic we were going to have to really talk about next week.
And just as a fan, I wanted to see a real sports story and see where people are going to.
I'm a Cowboys fan.
I'd like to see if Dak Prescott and Amari Cooper and Byron Jones are going on.
I don't think I knew you were a Cowboys.
Oh, wow.
Just because I talk trash about them all the time.
Yes.
I hate the Cowboys, but they're my favorite team.
So should the NFL delay free agency or should they just go on his plan?
Because it would be the only sports topic next week.
They would be the focal point of all the sports media.
That's an interesting one.
Can't, I guess they couldn't release so-and-so sign with X, but we're not going to tell you the money.
Because, you know, once somebody sets the bar, whether it's Amari Cooper signing somewhere,
for X amount of million than the next guy down.
You wouldn't be able to hide that number.
Yeah, I don't think you could.
Shefter would get it.
Glazer would get it.
I mean, it would be impossible to hide that.
That's difficult.
But that would be the perfect distraction we need, right?
I look at it.
Yeah, that would be a fun to show.
I understand the optics.
It's going to look bad if Byron Jones signed for $65 million with the Eagles
and everyone's sitting there out of work.
But I feel like it's something we could kind of take our mind off of this, at least momentarily.
Yeah.
No, that's a difficult one.
And I think the other one we'll get too shortly here
is the NFL draft.
So, all right, thank you, Mr. Goulet.
Well, that's the news.
And thanks for stopping by.
The Heard Lye News.
So you guys have seen, obviously, NCAA tournament, canceled,
masters postponed.
Every sport in America has postponed.
There's some photos going around on social media
of what the sports book looked like in Vegas.
And there's nothing.
Nothing to gamble.
It's a ghost town.
Sportsbooks are empty.
And the one thing that has
been canceled outside of obviously free agency yet in the NFL is the NFL draft.
And we were talking here in the early morning meeting about should they postpone the draft?
Should they cancel the aspect of all the fans flying into Vegas and being there as the players take gondola rides and high five everybody?
Where are you guys on the draft?
Because I, on my Saturday show last week, I said, just say,
no, we're not having the draft. Now, Goulet, you have Vegas tickets for the first round of the NCAA tournament.
I mean, there's a lot of people who have paid for hotel rooms, paid for flights to Vegas for the draft.
It's going to be a great scene. Should the NFL do something?
I would say not yet. You probably cancel it. I understand that. But it's still a good amount of time out.
So what is the rush to canceling it right now? Why can't you take a week and see if there's a way you can do it?
you know, what is the rush to cancel something that's not imminent?
See, I guess the argument would be, well, let's say there's 50,000 fans going to Vegas for the draft, along with the players and entourages and everything.
If they're able to cancel early, more than 30 days out, I think, again, depending on the hotel room, you're fully refunded, perhaps.
Maybe I don't know how the flights are going to handle it, but if I can cancel that, I probably would at this juncture.
Now, the draft, as you said, five or six weeks away.
Wouldn't you anyway?
Regardless.
If you're going to, I know you.
You know me.
You're going to cancel regardless.
You're going to cancel regardless.
Yes.
And I'm getting texts from family members.
Jason, you're definitely the most paranoid person I know.
I've never talked to you about this, but you are.
Thank you for those messages.
But yes, I would cancel it.
Tui, his Hawaii trip, I would nix that.
Now, I will say this.
My wife now knows we're going to be home for three weeks, at least with the kids.
She doesn't want to stay scooped up.
So she said, why wouldn't,
we go to a national park or Palm Springs in the desert just to get away for three or four days.
And, you know, she was in the other room telling us this.
And I'm looking at the kids shaking my head.
No, no, let's not do that.
You know, doing the throat slash like, uh-uh.
And the kids are like, nah, mom, I don't think so.
And of course, then mom knows I'm like the ringleader for canceling that.
And I'm taking heat.
But I don't know how I feel, Goulet, about going to a hotel.
hell anywhere. The people coming in to change my sheets, the people delivering the room service,
who was in the room before us. I know at my house, we're clean. I'm going to go home.
I can't believe I'm admitting this on probably the number one radio show in the country.
I'm going to go home from this, take all my clothes, jump right in the shower, put these clothes in
laundry. Is that weird? Is that like, Goulet, am I? Oh, boy. That's crazy.
How is that crazy? Compared to all the other stuff we now know you have stockpiled, it's not that
It's not that stockpile.
How many gloves do you have ready?
Okay, so it's not gloves.
So at Costco, gosh, I'm getting looks.
So you go to Costco.
500, right?
No, you get the box of gloves.
They sell those doctor gloves.
And it's a box of 400.
Costco, you can't buy 50 bucks.
The fact that you went to Costco for gloves, though, tells me your stockpile.
No, I didn't go four gloves.
I was getting water.
Jason, you know how many your neighbors now can't get gloves because you took all of them?
I didn't take all.
It's like one boxers, a crate of them.
I didn't load up.
It's literally twoie.
one box has 400 gloves.
So then the next person's box has four.
I didn't load up on them.
I wasn't hogging the toilet paper, paper towels.
I'm not that guy.
You're on doomsday, Mac.
Oh, wait, yeah, you are.
You are that dooms day.
I probably should not have opened that can of worms here.
And, yeah.
No, in all honesty, I just, I don't,
I know I'm taking precautions to be safe and clean and healthy.
I don't know about the other people out there.
I don't know if everybody else is as weird
me. And folks, you know, if you're in a public restroom and you go to open the door, do you just
pull the door handle or do you get a paper towel and pull the door handle? Tui, what do you do? Lately
I've been using a paper towel. What were you doing a year ago? Just pulling a door hand? Of course.
Everybody does. Goulet, you would just pull it with your hand. I'm a paper towel guy.
How long? I guess as an adult probably. Right. I'm not saying a hundred. I'm not saying I've never
not. I'm just, I try to if I remember to keep paper towel. I would say that tipping,
point for me was having kids and knowing that, you know, they're young, their immune systems
aren't up. And I started to be a little more, hey man, I can't just, I can't just touch a door
handle in a public restroom at Staples Center. Gosh, are you kidding me? Anyways, all right,
coming up next year on the herd, Fox Sports Radio, I will not be looking at all your Instagram
notes and tweets that I am a crazy paranoid person. Trust me, cow herds in the same boat as me.
We talk a lot. He's very similar to me.
We're going to talk to a reporter who was with the Utah Jazz,
went through the whole Rudy Gober ordeal.
That's next here on The Herd.
Be sure to catch live editions of the herd weekdays in noon Eastern, 9 a.m. Pacific
on Fox Sports Radio, FS1, and the IHeart Radio app.

And in recognition of mental health awareness month, I'm bringing over a decade of my own
experience in the mental health field and conversations with so many incredible guests.
I'm talking, Tripp Fontaine, Ryan Clark.
Sometimes when we're in the pursuit of the thing.
We get so wrapped up in the chase that we don't realize that we are in possession of the thing.
And we're still chasing it.
And we don't know when we've done enough.
Because people scoreboard watch.
Life becomes about wins and losses.
Steve Burns, Dustin Ross, because you find it important to be a good person while you hear on Earth.
Are you a good person because you're afraid?
Because that's two different intentions, bro.
Absolutely.
And that's two different levels of trust.
I want you to just really be a good person.

What's up, guys? This is Clever Taylor the 4th. And on my podcast, The Cliverts Show, I'm bringing you conversations about all kinds of stuff.
Like being an internet famous referee. We're in the middle of a game. This linebacker, this linebacker walks up to me. He goes, hey, ref, my mom wants you to
wave at her. What?
Tomah!
Quarterback on office blue of 42!
Hey, Wreck, my mama
want you to wave at her. What?
Hey, Ms. Parker.
Listen to the Cliverts show on the IHeart Radio app,
Apple Podcast, or wherever you get your podcast.
What's up, fam? It's Isaiah Thomas.
And I'm C.J. Toledano, and our podcast, Point Game is about
defying the odds.
Like LeBron heading into the playoffs without Luca and Austin Reed.
finding ways to win no matter what.
And when IT's friends,
stop by like Quentin Richardson, we dive into some playoff history too.
Steve Nash will get that thing. That man, hell get the flying. He run up the court,
licking his fingers why he got the ball. Like, after you go through a training camp with
that I said, you figure it out real quick. Get your ass up and down the court, and you're going
to get the ball. So listen to Point Game on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you
get your podcasts. Back here on the herd, Fox Sports Radio. It's your boy, Jason McIntyre,
in for Colin.
Colin is back on Monday.
So Colin did his show yesterday.
Usually he'll call me on the way home just to check in or what have you.
We just shoot the stuff frequently.
And he's like, make sure you guys get to a grocery store.
It's going to be crazy.
I'm like, bro, I was at Costco the last two weekends.
Where are you been?
And he's just like, oh, you're one of those guys.
He's like, you know it.
Back here on the herd.
Our next guest, folks, this is crazy.
He was front and center with Rudy Gobert and the Utah Jazz this week.
His name is Tony Jones.
He writes for the athletic.
Tony, good morning.
How are you?
Good morning.
Thank you for having me.
Yeah, hey, thanks for coming on, Tony.
Tony Jones was quarantined.
Tony, I just need to know everything.
First of all, were you there earlier in the week when Rudy Gobert
rubbed down the microphones with his hands joking around?
Ha, ha, ha.
A, were you in the room, and B, did he touch your microphone?
I was not in the room, actually.
Lucky guy.
Because I had taken my kids to school at 6.30 in the morning that day,
and I had just come off the East Coast road trip.
So I said, I'm thinking of the room.
And, you know, obviously I heard, and I heard about everything.
you know, I knew that everybody in the room kind of laughed and kind of took it.
And obviously, you know, in hindsight, it looks really ominous and, you know, and it's been viral that's kind of taken off.
Yeah, he's not going to be able to live this one down for a while.
So, Tony, let me ask this.
You've been around Rudy covering the team, how many years, I'm not sure, but what kind of guy is he?
Is he a jokester?
Is he serious?
Obviously, you know, he's a young guy.
Is he married? Does he have kids?
Because he's going to be all alone right now in a tough time where he is kind of, I don't want to say patient zero.
But in America, coronavirus really arrived when Rudy Gay was announced to have it.
Rudy Gobert, sorry, was announced to have it.
So I've covered Rudy for every year but one of his career.
This is my fifth year covering the jazz.
He's one of my favorite interviews because he's brutally honest, positive or negative.
And, you know, he's one of the best quotes that I've ever come across.
So as a reporter, he's one of those guys that you kind of dream of.
He's, you know, off the floor.
He's engaging.
He's funny.
He's eloquent.
I think that Rudy, you know, I think the perception is that he's going to have a tough time.
And I think he's having a tough time personally with everything that's happened,
which is why he apologized in his statement.
I think that he realizes the levity and the gravity of the entire situation
when I don't think he realized it in real time.
But I also think a lot of us didn't realize the gravity of the same.
situation in real time. And I think that when there's a pandemic, it's different when it hits home.
And I think for a lot of us in the last few days, I think that that pandemic is at home.
We're talking with Tony Jones of The Athletic. He covers the Utah Jazz. All right. So Tony,
before I get to your situation and being quarantined, I got to ask about the relationship with
Donovan Mitchell, who has since tested positive. Do you, do Michigan?
Mitchell and Gobert, like, sit together on the team flights?
Are there lockers always next to each other?
Is there any clue how he contracted it, but yet nobody else connected to the Jazz did?
I don't think anybody knows.
See, that's the thing.
I think I don't think anybody knows how either one of them contracted the illness.
They do sit next to each other in the locker room.
They are constantly in communication with each other.
on the floor and off the floor.
That's natural because they are the two pillars of the franchise.
Like they are the guys.
You know, so their relationship just organically is a close one.
They are the same person in that both of them are very, very competitive.
They both want to win.
I think that there's an age gap.
between them of about four years.
So in some ways, they're different.
But in a lot of ways, they're the same.
And, you know, they're kind of tied to hip together.
And the fact that, you know, they're the two guys that the front office is built around,
made decisions around.
And, you know, on and off the floor, you know,
a lot of times when they're physically in each other's proximity.
All right, Tony, let's get to Wednesday.
We're talking with Tony Jones of The Athletic covers the Utah Jazz.
So Wednesday, Gobert tests, was sick and then tested positive.
Can you just talk about what it was like when you got that news because nobody was expecting
this?
And then, of course, tell us about the ordeal where you actually were tested for coronavirus.
Well, it was, I could take you back to shoot-around.
You know, during shoot-around, it was announced that he was questionable with illness along with the man in Moodye.
And, you know, when we reported it, you know, it was an innocuous shoot-round report.
Rudy Gobert and Emmanuel Moillier both questionable to play on Wednesday night.
know, with illness. And that kind of took off because of obviously the coronavirus. And people
like, well, they have the coronavirus. And we specifically asked the jazz, hey, can you give us
the ability to use language that says that that rules out that this is not a coronavirus illness.
and we were not given that.
And then we, you know, the whole thing went to a round tip off.
Rudy was declared out, and then he was declared not out.
And then, you know, there was question whether he would be,
whether he would play all the way up until about five minutes before game time.
And then after the game was canceled or postponed,
I started getting texts that said, hey, this is related to Rudy in an illness.
And my teammate at the athletic, Shams, he had the story in hand and he reported it.
And then, you know, my first, you know, it was then after that, it was just like everything kind of took off.
So my first thing was, you know, I have to go and get the story.
And then, you know, my second thought was, wait a minute, I just had a one-on-one with Ringo
Gail on Saturday night.
Oh, geez.
So it was a lot of different emotions, and it was a crazy night.
All right, Tony, let me get you out of here with this one.
So when you test negative for coronavirus, do they still recommend, hey, it could show up in two or three days?
You should self-quarantine, stay away from your family?
Or because you tested negative, it's all good.
You can go about your community and blah, blah, blah.
No, definitely.
Quarantine for 14 days.
Oh, wait.
So you haven't seen your family since?
No.
Oh, man.
I'm not going for two weeks.
So what do you know?
You don't need to give us an address, but what are you at a hotel or something?
I'm somewhere safe while I'm by myself.
Oh, man.
So, like, what are you doing for food and stuff?
I'll figure it out.
I'll get food.
I mean, I can get food.
I've been told that you can get food.
There just has to be nobody in the store or, you know, it has to be like at off hours.
Really?
Yeah, you're definitely told that you're at, it's a two to 14 days, two to 14 days before you're in the clear.
So that's why they recommend you go to 14 days before you're officially clear.
And then they'll test you again?
No, if you're still asymptomatic body in the 14 days, the thought process is that you're in the clear.
So within the 14 days, if you start showing symptoms, then obviously they'll take the next step.
Oh, my gosh.
All right, Tony.
Good luck, man.
Scary stuff.
Tony Jones of the athletic.
Follow him on social media.
He covers the team.
Tony, good luck, man.
Stay healthy.
Thank you for having me.
All right.
That was Tony Jones.
Cal Goulet.
He's quarantined.
What are you doing for food?
He's like, I'll get food.
I'll figure it out.
I like some alone time, but 14 days is a lot.
And there's nothing to watch.
You can't do anything.
You're going to go to the end of Netflix and back.
But what if you can't even, what if they don't have Netflix at the hotel he's at?
What do you do then?
I guess just FaceTime people and call your, oh my goodness.
That is a nightmare scenario for your boy.
All right, coming up next hour, we're talking to a top 10 coach from college basketball.
There is some news currently breaking.
about college athletics.
We will have it for you when we come back at the top of the hour.
Again, Jason McIntyre in for Colin on Friday the 13th.
Great show so far.
One hour left.
Let's go!
Be sure to catch live editions of the herd weekdays in noon eastern 9 a.m. Pacific.
Hour number three here on the herd.
Fox Sports Radio, IHeart Radio.
It's me, Jason McIntyre.
in for the one and only Colin Cowherd is scheduled day off for Cowherd.
He's back in on Monday.
I wonder if he ever told you guys the time we played tennis.
Maybe you can call in next week when he's taking calls next week and ask about what we played.
It was fun.
Hopefully we'll do it again soon.
I don't know.
That was a question I should have asked that infectious disease expert we had on earlier.
Can you play tennis?
because you got two guys touching the ball, you know, and all that fun stuff.
But, wow, it's been a crazy two hours.
We have a great guest coming up here in 15 minutes.
He coached a top 10 team in college basketball this year.
We will get to him with plenty of questions for his thoughts.
The first March Madness tournament ever, I believe, that's been canceled.
Super depressing.
If you're watching online, I'm currently wearing my Evansville Purple Aces T-shirt.
shirt, very cool t-shirt.
I'm a college basketball nerd.
If you follow me on social media or, you know, you listen to my weekend show.
You know, I was once in a college basketball fantasy league.
Yes, a fantasy league where you have players, and if they graduate, you lose them.
If they stay in for four years, you keep them, obviously.
You mix in the one and duns.
It was so nerdy.
I loved it.
I've just been a longtime college basketball fan.
And the fact that the tournament's not here really hasn't sunk in.
I got a text from someone over at FS1
Hey, I'm listening
What are they going to do with one shining moment?
And I almost got extremely sad
Just thinking of one shining moment for me
Is like, dude, this is, and here's a thing
A lot of you guys listening don't know me
You only hear me when I visit Cowherd Show Weekly
And I'm the kind of guy who in college
I would record one shining moment
This is before YouTube
Okay.
I would record one shining moment so I could watch it the next day or a month later
or to get ready for the next college basketball season.
I'm dead serious.
Like I have a lot of nerdy things that I'm into with sports.
And one shining moment in college basketball is one of them.
It's just extra.
I had to go in my calendar and delete selection Sunday, you know, like the wife,
so she knows we have that shared calendar.
We caved and did that.
Tui, by the way, do you?
do you share a calendar on your phone with your wife?
Do we?
Yes.
You do.
Okay.
I recommend it highly.
We only started about six months ago.
It's great.
So I have in the calendar,
selection Sunday,
first day of NCAA tournament.
So the wife knows,
I can't count on Jason to do anything
for like the hour before,
because I've got to get ready,
and then the hour or two after of selection Sunday.
You put sporting events on your personal calendar?
Oh, the important ones.
I mean, the Masters is not on there,
but the NCAA tournament's on there, the NFL draft, NFL free agency.
Just because, like, I don't need the wife calling me with, hey, can you go to the grocery store
when we're like on the verge of Tom Brady deciding between the Chargers and Patriots.
You know, like, and this is a weird thing.
I did put this on social media yesterday.
So my wife, currently, we've been dating for a long time.
And we were maybe two years into dating when I, you know, when you're dating someone
that you think it's going to be the one, you do a lot of silly things.
Like in the middle of an NCAA tournament Sweet 16 game,
I had to go to her parents' house because for whatever reason.
And of course, I'm like, listen, we got to watch this game.
Arizona, Illinois, the epic.
It might have been 8th, Sweet 16 or a lead date.
I'm not sure.
But Arizona was playing Illinois.
Arizona with Salim Stadameyer takes his big lead.
And then storming back comes Luther Head, D.
Don Williams, D. Brown.
One of the best comebacks.
I went yesterday and watched it on YouTube.
And, of course, I'm gambling on these games, okay?
So I'm at the future in-laws house, and I'm like, freaking out.
I mean, the call, I think Billis was on the call.
And it's just an outstanding comeback over like four minutes,
and Illinois wins in overtime.
And I'm one of these guys who gets into the games.
I'm watching the NCAA tournament games at home.
I'm like, yeah, let's go, you know, freaking out.
Obviously, the gambling adds to it.
and winning bracket pools.
Damn it, there's not going to be a bracket pool this year.
So the in-laws afterward, you know, the wife downloads him, yeah, Jason, you guys know him.
He's really into sports.
And I was like, well, listen, you signed up, babe.
There's what I do.
Like, Goulet, you're in a relationship now.
She knows you're a big sports guy.
There's times on the calendar.
You're going to be unavailable, right?
Yeah, I'm lucky that she is all.
also aware of those and won't want to do anything away from that.
Like I wouldn't have to mark selection Sunday because she's sitting there.
But I also would never think to be like to write down stuff on the...
I also don't have kids so I can do whatever I want whenever I want.
This is a great...
You do want to have kids at some point, right?
No, I'm good.
Well, my brother who's listening because he's been texting me, he also is in that boat,
doesn't want to have kids.
And I'm like, come on, dude.
Do you...
Like, I can't imagine.
imagine what life would be like if I didn't have kids, you know, because I've had them seven,
eight years.
Tui, you're in my boat, right?
Like, your kids are your life.
You got there.
You look at my calendar, Goulet, and it's like, jujitsu, baseball, ice skating, basketball.
And, like, that's the week.
Like, it's all about them.
It's, we, we're real.
balls around them, for sure.
Like, every day, it's something else.
And I can't keep, I can't keep track of it all.
Like, every day, I'm like, oh, God, what do we have today?
Oh, they got this.
Oh, they got that.
Yeah. A couple dads I know invite me out for drinks.
I'm like, well, I got to put the kids to bed.
Now, these guys, some of these guys I live with in the area in L.A., you know,
when I got the job at FS1, Calhurt tells me, hey, move to this town.
So him and his wife take me and my wife out for dinner, and they show us around.
It's like, oh, this town's amazing.
So we live there.
But, of course, what we come to realize is all these people out here are ballers, and we're not on their level.
And a lot of them have nannies, and I'm like, ooh, well, we're not doing that.
you know, so they can go out whatever.
And some of these guys invite me out for drinks are like,
hey, we got to put the kids to bed.
I'll see it, you know, so-and-so time.
But like life revolves around the kids.
Now, I'm not at that stage where I can't wait for them to get to college
and get out the door because they're still in the fun stage.
I'm sure I will get there.
But I am, Segule, I'm a little surprised at that.
Like, you're a big sports fan.
You know, you played sports growing up.
You don't want to one day have kids and coach them and all that fun stuff.
I mean, now you're getting into really deep, like,
life-changing decisions.
I just, I know that I'm good.
You guys have to worry about what to do with your kids next week.
Jason, I don't.
Just know I've scared him to depth about what coaching entails.
I've given him all the stories.
I don't think he's going to do it.
There's a lot of negative.
And it sounds terrible.
It doesn't sound really.
I barely liked playing Little League.
I don't want to coach it.
No, no, I'll say this.
I didn't sign my kids up towee for baseball.
Because, listen, in April,
I don't want to be sitting there for two hours
watching kids pitch around other kids
and it takes forever.
I told my wife like,
we could go to the beach on Sundays.
Little League,
are your games on Sunday, too?
They're all day, every day.
They're Monday, Wednesday.
Not all the time,
but like they could play on Monday, Wednesday,
Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday, yeah.
So me and my kids,
we start this thing after football season.
During football season, my wife gets it.
Like, I can't do anything.
I don't go to church.
I'm locked in.
The game start out here in L.A. early, 10 o'clock.
So I can't play basketball in weekends.
But after football,
I start going and running near the beach with my kids.
And I text these other dads.
Hey, guys, we should start a big group.
It's fun.
You know, my daughter takes her little scooter.
And they're like, damn, we got baseball.
We're out of the mix.
I'm like, how long is the season?
Like, 10 weeks?
I'm like, weekends in April?
When the weather's amazing?
Because it's like 70 degrees near the beach.
Like, that run in the morning really gets you going.
And now, because of coronavirus, I'm punting totally on the gym.
I'm out.
like Goulet, are you going to work out at all
or anywhere near a gym or F-45
or Barry's boot camp, any of that stuff?
Do I look like a Barry's boot camp kind of body?
Listen, you're in, like when I hear Charles Barkley
tested for the coronavirus, I'm a little nervous.
He's close to 60.
I don't know that he's obese, but he's not in shape.
You're in shape, right?
I would assume.
Yeah, I just, I'll wipe, if I want to go, I'll wipe down the machine.
See, there's a lot of people that don't have to work.
We're still going to be here every day.
So my schedule really doesn't change.
I don't have more time for the gym now all of a sudden.
And Jason, I just, I play in a weekly game as well, and I just texted some guys, and they are going today.
Really?
They're going to try to run today.
Yeah, we go every day.
We're the same group every day.
What are we?
Half court, full court.
No, it's full court.
Nobody's worried about it.
They're just, you know what?
That's like our therapeutic quarantine spot.
So the, hold up, hold it.
This is where it gets fun.
So the president's supposed to speak in about 50 minutes.
And I don't know if these are insiders or whatever.
but you go on social media.
Some of the newspapers are saying state of emergency.
Now, where's he going to say it?
I don't know.
But I do know California, basically everywhere in Southern California, the schools are closed.
And I had some buddies texting photos.
Hey, I got to Target.
Look at the photos.
And it's literally nothing on the shelves.
So I think everybody's kind of at that we're going to hunker down.
I don't think the game's going to go on today, too.
Can I put some money on that?
Sure.
I need to gamble on something.
Goulet was going to coax me to gamble on.
NASCAR this weekend.
I mean, I'd be, you know, picking a name out of a hat or I'll call Todd Furman, my buddy,
and he'll be plugged in on that.
But yeah, maybe I'll gamble on whether or not your pickup game will happen.
By the way, third grade March Madness in the South Bay, it's not happening.
But man, we were good this year.
Our team.
I really think we could have made a Reddit the title.
I know the commissioners listening and a couple other dads who are fans of Fox Sports
radio. And I told him, listen, we're not going dark. We're going to be around. You guys want to get away
from the coronavirus and all the sketchiness in China and Italy. Come right here. Keep it locked.
Fox Sports Radio. Coming up next year, we've got a top 10 college basketball coach from this season
coming on the show to talk about his team's ordeal. The cancellation of March Madness, you know,
maybe we'll both cry together. They totally got shafted. Probably the greatest season in
in the school's history or close to it.
They did have a star in the NBA.
But first, untuck it makes shirts specifically designed to be worn untucked.

We're going to be talking to college basketball coach here shortly.
It's just, it's really unbelievable what happened to the end of the college basketball season.
March Madness canceled for the first time that I'm ever aware of.
And for a team like San Diego State, which had a phenomenal season, 30 and two,
they were looking at a one maybe two seed in the NCAA tournament.
This is how good the Aztecs were.
Two losses by a combined six points.
Let's welcome to the show, Brian Dutcher, the head basketball coach, San Diego State Aztex.
Brian, good morning. How are you?
Thanks for having me, Jason.
Yeah, it's one of those melancholy days, no NCAA tournament.
I still can't fathom it. I don't think it's set in.
How did you handle it, Brian, when you heard the news?
You know, sad for the kids.
You know, as a coach, you always have opportunities to go,
and I've been blessed having been at Michigan with Steve Fisher since 1988,
all the way through the 20 years here at San Diego State.
I've been to the tournament.
But for those kids that get a goal,
at one time and be denied the opportunity.
It's hard to swallow.
Yeah, it seems very, very, not only hard to swallow, but just unfair.
I mean, that's the word that comes to mind.
You know, you guys had a, I would say this is the best season in San Diego State history.
I know Kauai Leonard was on some good teams there, but 30 and two, Brian, one or two seed.
Was there any case to be made from the coaches, the players?
Was there a lobbying faction that said, hey, let's just postpone it.
Let's not cancel it.
I think it's all the wording.
You know, at first when this was going down, there was a group of coaches that wanted it suspended, kind of like the NBA said.
And, you know, everything changes so fast.
Yeah.
You know, over 24 hours, we went from playing it with no fans to canceling the whole thing.
So my thought was, where are we going to be in three weeks from now, a month from now?
It could change drastically, and maybe we'll have an option.
to play it. But at the same time, I understand that public health is the number one concern,
and I understand that they thought cancelment was in the best interest of everyone.
So, Brian, do you believe that they should move forward this weekend to at least seed the teams?
And just to put, for some reason, to put that out there and maybe give the teams, the schools,
the players, a sense of accomplishment that, hey, we made the tournament.
Do you think they should still seed the tournament?
You know, that's one of the classic moments, isn't it, when you see your name come up on the board?
You have that celebration moment and that thought, wow, we're here, our names on the board.
And sometimes that's as exciting as anything.
And I think it's tough to do now to put them up on the board, but it is a moment that we all are going to miss.
So we're talking with Brian Dutcher, head coach San Diego State.
They went 30 and 2 this season.
Brian, if you could, and again, a speculation on how you guys would have done is crazy.
But you were looking at a one or two seed, probably geographically being in the West.
Listen, you've been around college basketball since the Fab Five.
Obviously, you know the landscape.
I don't know.
Can you talk a little bit about, you thought this team could win a national title, obviously, correct?
I think we were good enough to compete for one.
Whether you do or not, it's such a great event.
And that's why it's so great is that it's a one and done that upsets happen every game.
And that teams, they kind of determine their own fate.
We had a team that was senior-laden.
We had two fifth-year senior starters, fourth-year junior, two true juniors.
And so we had the experience and kind of the chemistry to be good in March.
But whether that ever would have happened or not, I guess we'll never know.
I mean, the Ken Palm advanced stats loved San Diego State.
15 offense and defense, top 12 and 3 point percentage.
Like everything lined up for your team.
I will ask, have you followed any of the news in the last year 90 minutes about the NCAA looking to petition spring sports and potentially winter sports to maybe give these fifth year?
A shot at redemption next year.
Have you followed any of this news?
Yeah, a little bit.
I could see the spring sports because they didn't get to compete at all really.
the interesting thing with giving the winner sports like basketball a fifth year,
are you only giving it to the teams that didn't play their conference tournaments or the NCAA tournament?
And then that's a competitive advantage, the teams that maybe had guys that finished their careers,
now you're going to give them a fifth year too.
So I think there's a lot to it more than just saying the feel good,
let's give the guys that didn't make the tournament a fifth year.
I think all of a sudden you say now we have 360-some teams.
teams were going to allow every senior to come back for a fifth year, even those that really
completed their season.
Conference tournaments were done.
And so I think there's a lot more thought that needs to go into it.
I think the intention is good and the thought is good, but I think obviously the devil's
in the detail.
Yes, certainly.
Well, Brian, what about recruiting?
What kind of possible impact could that have not only on the seniors sticking around,
but the coronavirus?
You can't hit the recruiting trail anytime soon.
Nobody's playing anywhere.
AAU shut down.
No, a lot of this has to do with now late visits.
You know, all of a sudden the transfer market is opening.
You'd like to bring kids in for visits.
That's not going to happen.
You know, the opportunity to go out and meet their families is being pushed back.
And so everything just, well, I had a player come in.
I met with all our players today one-on-one, and they said it's thought the world's been put on pause.
And that's what it is.
Everything's put on pause.
Competition's put on pause.
Recruiting's put on pause.
going out to restaurants or movies for some people is put on pause.
So we're all in a pause mode right now.
And when that ends and how quickly it ends is going to be based on what happens with the coronavirus.
Yeah, Brian Dutcher, head coach, San Diego State.
Amazing season coach.
Congratulations.
And, you know, if there's any luck, maybe we'll see an NCAA tournament at some point in May or June.
Thank you so much, Brian.
Thanks for having me, Jason.
All right, Brian Dutcher.
Boy, that's tough, man.
Listen, this guy coached a.
was a coach on that Fab 5 team that according to the NCAA doesn't exist.
One of my favorite teams ever in college sports, Brian Dutch.
That's got to be brutal.
Did you hear that, Gulae?
Two fifth-year seniors.
They go 30 and two.
The last game they played, they lost on that Sam Merrill three-pointer, the stepback three.
Great.
That was like six days ago, and it feels like an eternity ago.
All right, let's go to the herd line news.
Turn on the news.
This is the herd line news.
So, Jason, we did have some breaking news this morning.
I mentioned it earlier.
The Masters has been postponed, not canceled, postponed.
Chairman of Augusta National Fred Ridley said, quote,
ultimately the health and well-being of everyone associated with these events
and the citizens of the Augusta community led us to this decision.
We hope this postponement puts us in the best position to safely host the Masters tournament
in our amateur events at some later date.
A lot of people thought they would maybe wait because,
this isn't until next month that they could wait to decide what to do. Again, they are postponing
it. The PGA has canceled the Players Championship, which finished one round on Thursday and then
is now canceled. And all the events between now and the Masters are also canceled. This is a
big bummer. Like, you know, this happens with like, these are special tournaments, right? The
NCAA tournament is special. The Masters is kind of separate from the rest of golf. It is more
special than anything else golf does. And these are both canceled. I don't know if you're a big
golf guy, but I feel like even non-golf people
will watch the Masters, especially if Tiger
Woods is involved. Now, the benefit is
Tiger was hurt,
wasn't playing in the players. Maybe this gives him
a chance. Maybe he wasn't going to play in the Masters. I don't
know. Hopefully they can get it in,
but I don't know when you're going
to be able to fit in the Masters
you know, then you're dealing with
like CBS
the members Masters only on CBS, right?
You can't do it in the fall. They have football.
Yeah. I mean, this is
this is a tough thing. How much of a, where does this
rank of all the events canceled,
whereas the Masters rank on the bummer list for you?
A little down the list.
Last time I played golf,
you ready for,
so we had people over Christmas Day.
We're transplants from the East Coast.
We had some people over Christmas Day,
and one of the guys is a big golfer,
and he's asking me,
Jason, hey, you want to play golf with me next week?
I'm like, oh, the white's going out of town,
yeah, I'm in.
You know, I had a couple white claws in me.
Then he texts me,
hey, we're playing on December 31st.
Tea time is 6 o'clock.
I was like, AM?
I committed to this.
And I ended up playing.
We had to use those glow-in-the-dark golf balls on the first hole.
I was like, well, never.
Let's just say I'm not playing golf anytime soon.
I will go to the range with anybody who wants to go.
But playing around a golf, it took like four hours.
I'm like, I don't have that kind of time.
Sorry.
Not a huge, are you a golf guy?
I mean, I like playing golf.
I don't play all that often because it's, like, expensive.
But, I mean, I love playing.
It's just like you said, it's a long commitment.
But, too, you know, he doesn't have the kids.
So, four-hour commitment, nothing.
I'm that guy when you go, hey, can you go golfing?
My answer is, yeah.
Yeah, sure.
I can't.
I can go whatever.
So pick up basketball hour, right, too, in 90 minutes.
Yeah, I'm in.
F-45 workout.
You want to go to hot yoga.
I can do any of this stuff because it's like 90 minutes.
Four hours is a colossal.
I thought golf was around so that people like you guys could get away from your wife and kids.
I don't want to get.
I thought that was the point of the sport.
Yeah, I know a lot of guys are like that.
It's weird.
I'm not trying to brag.
I'm loving life.
I'm very happy.
I like being around my kids.
I like coaching them.
Although I'm getting texts about my kids misbehaving out here
because they're home from school for the next three weeks.
So let's move on.
So the XFL's regular season was canceled yesterday due to the coronavirus.
XFL told its players they are free to sign with NFL teams.
That's a change in policy they had been told previously they could not until the XFL playoffs were over.
Despite the cancellation, players are all going to be paid.
Their base salary ticket holders can get their refunds.
The league is still committed, though, to playing a full season.
in 2021.
They haven't,
I don't know
that they've officially
canceled everything.
I think there is some thought
maybe they could do
a playoff and championship game.
That's really bad luck
for a league starting,
essentially starting this season.
And it got up to a good start.
Great start and you're,
your four weeks in or so,
it's really tough,
you know,
you're trying to develop a connection
with people where they go,
okay,
these teams,
like this is my team,
I watch them and now
they're gone.
That's really bad timing
and luck for a starting league.
Let's say,
coronavirus killed the NCAA
killed the XFL,
postpone the Masters. We'll see.
I mean, Adam Silver did not sound
he's like at least 30 days,
so could be longer.
He also would not like say 100%
there was going to be a conclusion of the season.
It was probably,
and they can go into the summer,
but like you said,
you get scheduling conflicts in certain areas.
I mean, the Olympics.
If there even is an Olympics,
I'd say the chance of the basketball tournament
meaning anything is slim.
Because all of these NBA players
are going to be coming off a season.
They're not going to want to do it.
All right, finally, I have a non-coronavirus sports story for them.
Oh, hey, here we go.
Ian Rappaport of the NFL Network is reporting the Los Angeles Chargers
will use their franchise tag on tight end Hunter Henry.
Smart.
He had 652 yards last year and five touchdowns.
He's one of those.
If he's healthy, he's good.
He's just not always healthy, but he's a good tight end.
So they've upgraded at Guard with their trade for Tray Turner.
They've now made sure their tight end is there.
A lot of people thought that, you know, he would be a valued for,
agent.
Austin Eccler?
Is this all a part of their Tom Brady pitch?
100,000%.
This is perfect.
So, and I think I talked a little bit about this with Coward, right?
So we saw LeBron come to the Lakers as he transitions into Hollywood production company, the next phase.
Tom Brady should do the same thing.
Now, the Chargers aren't the Lakers, but you're going to see Hollywood types show up to see Tom Brady.
He's now got production company.
That new stadium.
190 new stadium, which is pretty sick.
I think it's 199 productions where he was drafted.
Tom Brady's got the health and wellness stuff going on with TB12.
It just makes all the sense in the world to me.
If you look at what they've done, right, they traded for a guard because Brady hates when people are at his feet.
That's known about him.
So they traded for interior line help, so there's less people around his feet.
They can spend their first round pick at tackle because there's a lot of good offensive tackles in the draft.
As you mentioned, Austin Eckler's locked up.
He's a good pass-catching running back.
They have good receivers.
Now they have a good pass-guessing tight end.
That's a pretty good pitch to Brady.
Gullet, they were 12 and 4, 2 years ago.
I under, they have a, and last year, they, the Chargers always have terrible injury luck.
Yeah.
I'm sure you could pitch him on, hey, man, we have two good pass rushers.
We have this amazing defensive player in Derwin James who got hurt last year.
There is not a better roster of like star talent that Brady's going to get pitched by.
Maybe he wants to stay with the Patriots.
Maybe he just wants to go hang out with his boy Vrabble.
Chargers can't affect that.
But if it's on, hey, if you're going to leave, we have the most to offer you.
And by the way, you already own a house in Nashville.
No.
He owns a house in L.A.
It's Nash, Vegas to you and probably the intern who, everything in the South is now Vegas at the end of it, right?
Stark Vegas, Nash Vegas.
But I just, my one concern with the Chargers is Anthony Lynn.
I'm telling you, I bet on the Chargers a lot.
And he is a terrible, terrible in-game coach.
Now, maybe Brady's can make up for some of the Chargers.
those wards because we know Belichick and Brady
covered up a lot of problems with the Patriots.
Well, and also their offensive coordinator has been
calling plays for half a season and
it's like 10 years younger than Brady.
You could hope that Brady just comes
in and they say, bro, this is your show, Tom.
You've been here, we haven't. Take over.
Maybe he's good game for that.
And that's Herdline News.
Well, that's the news.
And thanks for stopping by.
The Hurdline News.
So we got about 30 minutes left in the show.
This is flown by.
Really a lot of fun.
A good group here, obviously.
I don't, should we open the phone line, see if anybody wants to call in.
Rip me to shreds, 1-800-292-5-150.
You know, for the 18 people still working in America, feel free to call in.
I don't think you're going to get in trouble.
Most bosses are not at home.
If you're home with your kids, go into your safe room.
You know, you've got a lot of toilet paper and canned goods.
Phone in.
Get whatever's on your mind off your chest.
Fire away.
You know, I do want to ask, Goulet, we didn't do too much on this.
So NCAA tournament canceled.
The TV deal of the NCAA tournament brings in $867 million.
Basically, all the smaller sports, field hockey, gymnastics, cross-country is paid for by college basketball.
Now, I know that I'm sure they have insurance, the NCAA.
but what is going to happen
if the NCAA tournament
doesn't happen? And they said it's canceled.
What's going to happen with all those sports?
Yeah, Doug was on yesterday in our last hour
and he brought that up,
that those sports live off of the money college football makes
and the tournament.
That's why I was so shocked that they canceled the tournament so quickly.
They didn't postpone it.
They didn't say, we're going to figure it out later.
They canceled it.
That's a lot.
Insurance doesn't cover that much.
Well, that was the one thing.
People have said insurance,
would cover the loss of ticket sales, you know, and some of the other stuff.
But I don't think insurance is covering all this.
And that's the trickle down of coronavirus.
Like, can you have a field hockey team?
You know, and again, I don't totally buy into the socialism of college sports.
I think the NCAA is a giant racket.
Doug and I very much disagree on this.
But in the long run, basketball ain't going to continue to pay for gymnastics and the
swim team and water pole.
This is not sustainable over the long haul.
Hopefully the NCAA can figure it out.
Ultimately, I don't think that's a good thing.
Other topics that I have jotted down.
I'm a massive college basketball fan, as you guys know.
I do want to ask if you can advise the people out there, Goulet,
to look up a game or a moment from NCAA tournament history that's on YouTube.
Is there one you would tell people,
you guys got to go watch?
Steph Curry versus Georgetown
Steph Curry versus Gonzaga
I'm telling you that Steph Curry run was phenomenal
There's a lot of good ones
Georgetown versus Florida Gulf Coast
Remember the dunking machine
Is there anything you want to toss out there
Goulet Tui if you've got any
I've got several lined up that I'll fire up
So I'm a Yukon fan
So first of all I would say look up
Kemba Walker Biggie's turn out
Because I still
I still remember that season more fondly
for that five days, then I do the three weeks of them winning the national championship.
My favorite moment was actually the 99 when Yukon upset Duke.
It was their first championship with Richard Hamilton.
Rip Hamilton.
Didn't they beat Washington?
His game winner earlier was against Washington.
That was when he was sick and he hit that fall away.
Total lucky rebound went his way.
I think it was all Spencer Hawes if memory serves.
They beat, I believe it was Elton Brand's Duke team, which was stacked with talent and
Yukon had never won anything.
They were still kind of the new guy.
That would be, that's still my favorite from my childhood,
even though they ended up winning four titles.
It's that one that stood out to me.
You can won four?
Wow.
I didn't realize it was that dominant.
Wait, Donnie L. Marshall get any?
No.
No.
All right, Tewy.
Ray Allen didn't either.
They didn't win with Ray Allen.
Tooie, is there a...
I have a couple...
First of all, where'd you go, Tui?
I went to Texas State.
Okay.
It's in the Southland.
Yeah, yeah, I'm familiar.
I bet on them in college football a couple times.
No, you did not.
No, you did not.
They were a good dog with flea.
this year. They're a great dog.
Couple sandwich games.
No, they, but see, I grew up in Austin, so I'm a big UT guy.
So I did have a moment.
There was a, in the 06 tournament,
they had a guy by the name of Kenton Paulina,
who was from L.A., who had a game winner against West B-Line,
John B-Line's West Virginia Mountaineers.
They sent him into the elite eight.
It was a, the game was tied.
Remember Kevin Pitznoggle?
Pitch Noggle, baby.
Pitz-Noggle hit a three to tie the game with five seconds left,
They come down.
Paulino hits a three to win it at the buzzer.
But that was a team with PJ Tucker, Lamarcus Aldridge.
So there were some big men.
Jay Augustine or no?
No, he was on the KD team.
Yeah, he was on the KD team.
Yeah.
But that one, but the other one that everyone remembers is the Gordon Hayward
buzzer be there against dude where he almost banked it in for the win.
That would have been one of the best shots in the history of sport.
Oh, yeah.
One of the worst games in the time.
It was a bad game, but it was a great for it.
Yes. Well, I mean, listen, the Chris Jenkins shot to beat UNC a couple years ago.
Now, fun fact, the guy who made that pass, Ryan Archie Diocono.
A quick story for all my buddies back in PA.
So we moved out of New York City to Pennsylvania.
I had sold the website and we were able to live anywhere, you know,
so we wanted to live kind of near my wife's parents so they could watch the kids.
We didn't have kids at the time.
So we moved out to Burbs right outside Philly.
And I start, obviously, find this gym, and I start going to play basketball.
And every single day at about 2.30, this kid would come in with his dad, and he would shoot.
And he never missed.
He would start in with the, you know, getting the wrist ready and back up.
And I'm like, who is this guy?
This guy's really good.
He doesn't miss shots.
So eventually I work my way into a pickup game and the guy shows up.
And I'm like, yeah, who is this guy?
See him here with his dad, man.
He's relentless.
Oh, he's going to Villanova.
Ryan Archie Diakano.
You're going to hear about him.
Oh.
I'm telling you, when you talk about coaching, Tui, your kids,
this guy's dad was there every single day with his kids shagging balls,
working on drills, fundamental stuff.
And there was a big bet.
I played in a weekend pickup game with a lot of guys.
A lot of guys better than me, because some guys play D3.
Will Archie Diakono make the NBA?
And a lot of them saying, no, no, no.
And I'm like, dude, this guy's fundamentals are down.
He plays defense.
There's a spot for him in the league.
He's been with the Bulls for like three years now.
And I just remember seeing this kid grow up watching.
And you only played with us once.
And I was at the stage where I was starting, like,
I'm a better athlete now than I was in high school.
I don't want to go back into the details of I was a young,
undersized guy.
I was a late bloomer.
So I was tiny.
And I, you know, once you get to like middle school,
you're getting pushed off the ball easily.
Well, I'm not making any high school teams.
But now I'm in good shape.
I, you know, play pickup.
I out here in L.A.
I try to guard like the best guy because, you know,
I'm youngish looking.
I'm a better athlete now,
and I tried to guard that kid, Archie Diocono, for like five minutes,
and it was like no chance.
He was a really good player.
At any rate, Archie Diocono with one of the more memorable assists
in NCAA tournament history.
All right, so I think we have one more segment.
Should we go to break here?
All right.
I was going to try to bring in the intern because it's her birthday
and ask, like, dude, it's your birthday.
The coronavirus is about to shut down everything.
Like, what do you do?
So I do want to, if any good callers have come in,
and she's screening the calls.
Maybe we'll take one.
I know Colin never takes calls.
He told me I started a radio show on the weekends at Fox four years ago.
And then like the number two thing he said.
Number one obviously was play the hits.
LeBron, Tom Brady, you know, what he does.
And number two was never take calls.
And I was like, but wait, these other guys don't take calls.
So I was like, all right.
So I don't take calls on my show.
This is an extraordinary circumstance.
So maybe we'll take a call.
1-800-292-5150.
Last segment of the show.
It's The Herd.
I'm Jason McIntyre.
Want more Herd?
The Herd streams 24 hours a day,
seven days a week,
within the IHeart Radio app.
Search Herd to listen live or on demand whenever you'd like.
Back here on Fox Sports Radio.
Damn.
Just reading about the coronavirus turn the break.
Let's just, I'm going to advise you not to go read about it.
Okay?
The smart move is to stay indoors.
No need to go outside. Definitely don't go to any concerts. Somebody sent me a picture.
I guess it was the Pepsi Center in Denver last night, a post-Malone concert.
What are you guys doing? Come on, be smarter than that.
You got any plans this weekend? Be prepared with windshield wipers that can handle anything.
Michelin Endurance XT Silicon Wiper Blades are real world proven for extreme weather performance,
lasting two times longer than the other blades.
New Michelin Endurance XT Silicon Wiper Blades only available.
at Walmart.
All right.
So we've cruised through the show.
We've got like seven minutes left.
We're going to take some calls.
Oh, boy.
A little nervous here.
Hank from Virginia.
Hank, is that you, fire away.
Hey, Jason.
And look, you're a jam.
You grad.
Yeah.
I'm actually an Old Dominion fan.
So college basketball is on my favorite sport.
I'm 54 years old.
I started watching 19-13.
79. So I'm really a fan. And look, we've already played our first football game in the conference, USA tournament, and actually got beat. So when they talk about bringing back seniors, does that mean our guy gets to come back to even though, you know, we've already finished our tournament. So should our guy bring it back? And look, hey, Colonial, what an underrated conference with BCU and George Mason going to a Final Four. And ODIU actually lost a tip-in at the buzzer the years at Butler was really.
good.
So, colonial, man.
Long for the days, buddy.
All right.
Hey, thank you for the call.
Good stuff.
Hank.
All right.
Let's go with Angel.
Angel, North Carolina.
What up?
Hey, how's it going, guys?
I'm excellent.
You got 30 seconds, buddy.
What, fire away.
Just kind of sad how the sports was.
It's kind of shut down because of this virus.
I was planning to go to some minor league hockey this weekend.
and baby shut it down.
It's the southwest or southeast
professional hockey league.
So it's kind of depressing.
So hopefully this goes away sooner rather than later than later.
Hopefully we get the NBA playoff.
Maybe I'm going to guess maybe Memorial Day around that time.
Hopefully we get, you know,
begin a conclusion to a pretty decent season.
So thanks for making my call.
Yeah, all right, Angel.
Thanks a lot, man.
Be safe.
All right.
Let's try Marshall from Dallas.
Marshall.
30 seconds, fire when ready.
Hey, Jason, I got two questions for you.
One, how do you think Oklahoma City is going to do in the playoffs?
And also a question about Alex Caruso.
I've heard Colin call him a C-minus C-plus player.
I think he's a little better than that.
Yeah, he is.
Good questions, Marshall.
All right, answers.
Caruso is potential X-Factor the way Delavadova was a few years back,
and no, I'm not only picking white guys.
But I think Caruso could show out.
You know, he's a nice.
you know, a little spark plug off the bench,
plays defense, hustles, doesn't take bad shots.
Okay, see, I think, as of now,
I think they'd beat the jazz in the first round,
then lose to the Lakers.
Thanks for the call.
All right, we'll go one more.
Dino from Florida.
Talk to me, Goose.
Whoops.
Yeah, all right, go ahead.
Hello?
Yep.
Zach from Back Rouge.
Oh, Zach, my fault.
First year law student.
Oh, geez.
Incredible.
I was a good call and ask what now the class is,
all gone virtual and they basically send us back home.
What are the college kids supposed to do now if we're going to be supposedly asymptomatic?
I know we're not going to say cooped up.
I just wonder what Jason thought about what recommendations for us.
Brutal.
All right.
Listen, that's a great question, Dino.
I'm going to hang up on you and try to answer that.
All right.
Listen, that is, oh, I didn't think about that, Goulet.
College kids getting out now.
And you're going to the job force and, like, nobody's obviously hiring.
Nothing's going on.
America's at a standstone.
What do you do?
I guess you play Xbox a lot.
Read some books.
You know, I should go on the gram later on and advise some books to read.
I kind of open the show talking about how, you know, I only love reading about sports growing up
because I wanted to be an athlete.
I'm one of those dopes who thought he'd be in the NBA.
No shot.
Fun fact, I've played basketball against some former NBA guys.
And, you know, I like to think like, oh, let me be.
get in this pickup game at UCLA.
And the guys respectfully are like, Jay, you know, I like it.
You couldn't bring the ball up the court against NBA players.
And I'm like, oh, oh, I got it.
Okay, so I can't do that.
So I got out of reading about sports and started to read about real world stuff.
Like, get smarter.
The world is bigger than sports.
And I think we're going to find that out here in the next, what do you think, four or five weeks?
There's going to be no sports, guys.
Nothing to gamble on, nothing to watch on TV.
At night, you're going to cycle through a million Netflix shows.
Don't be a zombie and watch Netflix every night.
Pick up a damn book and read.
I know it doesn't sound fun.
If you're single, you're not going to be able to go out to bars, are you?
I mean, Goulet, right now in Italy.
Everything shut down except for grocery stores and pharmacies.
There's not, you can't, I mean, Boston just announced no congregations of more than 250 people.
I just I don't even know how that works now I'm not on Tinder I haven't dabbled in that at all
I don't know how safe that is right now I mean you can probably make jokes about it but like dating on
social media right now like ooh it's tough out there in these coronavirus filled streets so the president's
going to speak in 10 minutes you know I'm hopeful he's got some good news I'm dubious that he actually
does. It just
nothing looks great right now,
but all I can say is, hey, thank you
for spending the last three hours
listening to me prattle on about
my failures in life
and my successes. And you're always going to have more failures
than successes. I took many
swings and misses with girls at bars. It just
never happened. And then you get lucky when you
meet the right one. But yeah, life is about failure.
And then you have some wins. We're going to
obviously be around here. Fox Sports Radio is going
nowhere. Colin Cowherd will be back on Monday. I've hosted the herd twice before. Once with
Broussard at FS1, we basically went at each other's throats for two hours about the NBA.
It was awesome because, you know, I like to beat up on Broussard. He has been covering the
league a lot longer than I have. He's got opinions, but I'm always right because I'm Jason
and I do my homework. And then the other time was January 1st. I hosted it. But Goulet and
Tooie, this is the first time I've hosted it with you.
We got one minute to go.
Goulet, your thoughts on how this show went, because it was very not
sporty.
Well, I don't know that I would blame you for that.
There isn't sports going on right now.
I think you had to me until the caller segment.
That's not heard.
That's not heard, man.
We don't do caller.
I know.
Yeah, I knew it.
Elisha in here is laughing.
Tuie, any thoughts?
You got 30 seconds on how this show went.
No, you did real well.
I mean, the bar was very high, you know?
The bar is very high.
You got maybe close to halfway there.
Close to halfway there.
Damn.
All right, I got to get on the home with Shapiro and Don Martin to get the invite back.
Mental note, no more callers.
And listen, Goulet is a tough audience.
Obviously, he's no, he's no, doesn't mess around when it comes to the bar here on the herd.
But it was fun talking and, you know, seeing you guys react on social media.
Obviously, the podcast will be up here shortly.
Everybody have a safe weekend.
You know, just be safe out there.
And God bless everybody.
Have a good one.
Last night, a blown call changed a game.
This morning, the internet lost its mind,

That's where SportsSlice comes in.
