The Herd with Colin Cowherd - Straight Fire w/ Jason McIntyre - Backing Off Tom Brady and the Bucs, Trey Lance Could Be RG3 2.0 & the Truth About NBA Trade Rumors

Episode Date: August 29, 2022

On today's episode, Jason and Super Producer Rob G (Robert Guerra) kick things off by doing a deep dive into Tom Brady's mysterious training camp absence. Brady spoke about it for the first time over ...the weekend... and said a whole lot of nothing. Regardless what the exact reason was, it's clear this version of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers is nothing like the one he won a Super Bowl with two years ago. In fact, J-Mac says he's officially pivoting to the New Orleans Saints to win the NFC South this year over Brady's Bucs. Later, the guys discuss Jason assertion that Trey Lance could have a Robert Griffin III-esque season this year with the San Francisco 49ers. RG3 burst on the scene as a rookie thanks in large part to a dominant running game which worked perfectly when paired with his own dynamic playmaking; Doesn't that sound exactly like what we expect to see from Lance this year in San Francisco? There's a reason why a handful of recent guests have pegged the Niners as a dark horse Super Bowl contender. Finally, Jason and Rob G close the show by discussing the notion that most NBA 'insiders' don't really know much at all when it comes to offseason movement. Not a single reporter had Rudy Gobert to Minnesota or Patrick Beverley to the Lakers before they actually happened. In fact, you can argue that the more frequently a trade rumor gets discussed the less likely it is to actually happen.  Click here to subscribe, rate and review all of the latest Straight Fire with Jason McIntyre podcasts! #FSRWeekends #HerdSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Starting point is 00:02:54 It's me, Jason McIntyre, Street Fire. For Monday, August 29th, final week. of the final month of NFL preseason. By the way, NFL preseason officially finished mercifully. We are now at the 10-day mark until Bill's Rams, September 8th, Thursday from SoFi Stadium. By the way, Rob, you'll love this. Went out for some like lunch beers and sandwiches or whatever burgers with some dads and daughters on Saturday. And one of the dads told me that his buddy, who's from Buffalo, lives out here. I know the guy. a little bit. He is a huge
Starting point is 00:03:33 Bill's fan. They have rented a party bus to bring like 10 guys to Bill's Rams and they are looking at folding tables so they can bring them in the parking lot to SoFi and recreate the madness that is Bill's Mafia. Yeah,
Starting point is 00:03:49 they're fired up. I was like, geez. I mean, they're like, we're getting out of work early celebrating the NFL season. I was like, FYI, I already bet the Bills minus two and a half on that one. Bill's Rams. I can't wait. It's very exciting. The NFL preseason is officially over. This is how crazy, Rob,
Starting point is 00:04:05 the final weekend of preseason was. The Ravens mascot tearing an ACL was like one of the bigger stories. And the Jets went 3 and 0 in the preseason. Wrapping it up with a nice win over the Giants, like the four-string quarterback, tossing some TD passes to Denzel
Starting point is 00:04:22 Mims, the bum who... I shouldn't say that's harsh. I apologize. We're not going to edit that out because we're just going to let it flow. Denzel Mims, the quasi-bust, who is the jets are trying to unload had a really nice game good his stock is up and now you guys have your fill of new york jets in the preseason that being said intro's out of the way this is a big monday i will be for the first time hosting cowherd show the herd solo never done that before
Starting point is 00:04:48 before you get too excited it is radio only cowherd um took took the week off um and so his staff is off as well. So, you know, they get a little break before football season. So, you know, I talked to Scott Shapiro, the big boss who makes all the radio decisions. I was like, sure, I'll do Monday. Heck yeah. Now, after Monday, I will, you know, be a little respite so I can enjoy some free time before football begins. May go out of town, probably play basketball a few times. By the way, old man basketball story. Going for a loose ball off a deflection, Rob. Saturday morning, first game, like four minutes in, and I like collided with a guy and like my back just, I instantly felt it like just tweak, Titan. I was like, oh, played just horribly, just kind of jogged for the rest of the, the whole weekend was kind of ruined, tarnished, if you will, by a small back injury. But there's bigger things afront, Rob, bigger things ahead. And I think the big story in every blog, website, podcast, TV show, radio show today. has to be Tom Brady
Starting point is 00:05:59 in what easily is the best quote that I've seen from Brady I mean, I don't want to say ever but it certainly is one of the greatest that he's uttered at least in the last five years. Tom Brady
Starting point is 00:06:14 on his absence from the bucks. I'm 45 years old, man. There's a lot of shit going on. I saw the quote Saturday. I don't know where I was. Actually, I know where I was. I was at a 50th birthday for a friend and then cousin Sal was there.
Starting point is 00:06:30 So I bumped into him and right, I saw this Tom Brady quote right before that and I was like, see, fading the bucks in week one. We start talking about gambling, obviously. But Brady's been through a lot and folks, listen, all of a sudden, this whole story about what on earth happened
Starting point is 00:06:47 for him to take an 11-day vacation. First it was like, oh, maybe Giselle said, we need to take a break before the kids go back to school, family time. and then there was a bunch of masked singer speculation. I don't watch a show personally. I know it's a Fox show. My kids like it. There was speculation that, oh, Brady's now an announcer for Fox in the future.
Starting point is 00:07:07 Maybe he's doing Masked Singer. And, of course, Brady denied that and came out with, there's a lot of bleep going on. And I'm trying to decipher that, Rob. And you never want to play like body language expert, although I did plenty of that when I was at Us Weekly. Rob, he didn't sound like a happy camper when he said it. If you guys have seen the video, I mean, it was all over social media.
Starting point is 00:07:33 But for Tom Brady to act like there's a lot of stuff going on, he's 45. I don't want to say he didn't want to be there. But no grunk, no Antonio Brown. Yeah, I mean, Brady played well Saturday night. He had nine pass attempts. The bulk of them were quick, like two-step drop within the line of scrimmage. No passes down the field of 20 yards or more. But it's not like the Colts are blitzing.
Starting point is 00:07:57 Nothing exotic, nothing interesting. Listen, it's the final preseason game. Don't get hurt. Right? And I started to read about the Bucks yesterday. And it's very clear that the offensive line is a concern. The GM and the head coach are like, hey, you know, we can't afford any more injuries. Maybe we'll be looking at the wire.
Starting point is 00:08:17 So they're going to have a rookie second round pick starting at left guard. They're starting a converted tax. who played 31 snaps last year. None of them at center. He's going to start at center. He suffered a high ankle spring Saturday night. So it's possible they will be missing him in the opener. And here's the weird thing, Rob.
Starting point is 00:08:34 I dug into it. And the first move the Bucks made when Tom Brady returned, he announced he's coming back. Let's give Ryan Jensen their center a three-year deal. Let's lock him in, keep Brady happy. And I started to read about Jensen and how good the line was last year. The Bucks allowed the fewest number of sacks last year. and their starting lineman played 88% of snaps together,
Starting point is 00:08:54 according to Warren Sharp's preview. I hope you guys read that. There's some really good stuff in there. So add it all up. Brady didn't take sacks. He had Antonio Brown. He had Grog. He had Mike Evans.
Starting point is 00:09:05 Remember, they won the Super Bowl. They crushed the Chiefs. Then they returned 22 starters. All of them. I think the first time that's ever happened. Everything was great. Now Brady's coming back. It's like three of his interior linemen are all going to be different.
Starting point is 00:09:19 One retirement, one injury. One lost in free agency. It's like, wait, who are these guys? And I know I've hyped up the bucks a lot. I actually think, Rob, I am ready to go with the New Orleans Saints to win the NFC South. I think they're going to pull it off. They do own Brady a little bit. The schedule is tough early for Brady.
Starting point is 00:09:39 I know after that it lightens up. But Rob, I'm not rooting against Brady the way I'm rooting against Belichick, which we'll get to in a moment. I don't think this is going to be a great start. for Brady and you know the media loves a buildup, tear down and they are just the knives are going to come out for Bray. Why did he come out of retirement? He's 45. He's falling off the cliff. Your guy Rob Parker
Starting point is 00:10:01 will be like, I told you for the last six years he was going to fall off a cliff. Look, it happened. That's what's going to happen right, Rob, early first in September? I hope so because I've been waiting for the Tom Brady fall off myself for a long time. You know that I'm not a fan of Tom Brady. Hater! I've been saying, you know, when that
Starting point is 00:10:17 rumor came out that John Gruden shot down the potential Tom Brady, acquisition in Vegas that Dana White floated out. I was like, good, because that's the only thing that John Gruden never did right in Vegas, because no self-respecting Raider fan would ever root for Tom Brady. That's how much I dislike Tom Brady in football
Starting point is 00:10:33 wise. Just Raiders? Is it because of the tuck rule? Yes. He is the tuck rule personified. Even if he's not specifically the reason why it happened, it's the NFL at fault, but because he was the one involved in the play, he's the guy we put most to our hate to us. Rob, let me ask.
Starting point is 00:10:48 You said no self-respecting Raiders fan. I don't know. I feel like that could apply in the NBA. Like, I know a lot of Lakers fans who are outraged about this Pat Bev thing. I can't root for this guy. He held his nose up to Russell Westbrook. He was so nasty to the Lakers when he was on the clippers. Bleep this guy.
Starting point is 00:11:04 Get him out of here. I will not root for. I don't feel that same enmity in football. I hope I use that correctly. I just don't feel it's the same, but your hatred for Brady. Yeah, no, it's definitely. The NBA is definitely different. As it relates to Tom Brady, though, two things.
Starting point is 00:11:20 Number one, it's a rule we never heard of. The fact that it has a name now because of Tom Brady and the Raiders that, you know, carry some weight. Number two, I know that they ended up making the Super Bowl after John Gruden left, but every Raider fan knows that that was the best team they'd ever had, the one that lost to Tom Brady and the tuck rule, because that was the team that was actually balanced offensively and defensively. So if we were going to win a Super Bowl, that was going to be the one that did it, and ultimately obviously didn't happen.
Starting point is 00:11:49 But I'm going down side track now Just going back to Tom Brady I think it's been pretty clear If you read the Tee leaves a little bit And most notably from Rick Stroud He's been covered the team forever And he said on Dan Patrick That it definitely wasn't a vacation that he was on
Starting point is 00:12:05 And it was obviously something of a personal nature That even he didn't feel comfortable sharing And if you're a reporter And you have information that even you don't want to share That kind of says something That says something that it's, it goes beyond the scope of football, whatever it is he's dealing with.
Starting point is 00:12:24 Do you remember when LeBron took that vacation? He was in Miami, I think. Yeah, when he left Cleveland. No, no, I think it was like in January. Yeah, he left Cleveland and went down to Miami for 10 days. He was, he was, I don't, it's still unclear what happened or what caused that, but, or do we know?
Starting point is 00:12:43 I mean, it's been a while. Brian Winhorse said that, if I recall, you know, don't aggregate it. But if I recall, Winhorse reported that LeBron was fed up with the Cavs front office and he needed a break. And it was as much mental as it was physical. And then he went down to South Beach for about a week and came back with a vengeance. 10 days.
Starting point is 00:13:04 Yeah. Something like that. Okay. So is there a, can you see Brady doing something like this to, I don't know, salvage his marriage? I don't, I don't. Again, I'm speculating. I don't know. Can you see him all of a sudden?
Starting point is 00:13:17 taking a couple weeks. I'm going to quickly look at the schedule, see if there's like a real, if there's a window with their buy week. Like, let's see. I'm going to say no before you even finish looking that up for two reasons. Number one, it was pre-approved by the Bucks. Todd Bowles said that they had this planned before training camp even started.
Starting point is 00:13:37 It was a planned absence. Number two, as friend of the show Chris Broussard has noted repeatedly, Tom Brady can go on vacation whenever the hell he wants to. Like he operates in a different tax bracket than everybody else. If he wants to go to Greece on a Tuesday in June, Tom Brady jumps on a January's into Greece. Like it's not difficult. He makes one phone call.
Starting point is 00:14:01 He can go wherever he wants. So I highly doubt even if this, you know, this idea that it was part of a family agreement that he was going to take this vacation before he decided to unretire. And it's like Tom Brady, if he really wanted to, As soon as he unretired, could have said, you know, I'm going to skip OTAs, I'm going to go to Australia for six days, I'm going to shoot on up to Switzerland for six days. He could do whatever the hell he wants to. How about this?
Starting point is 00:14:26 So, Rob, just based on what you said, I looked at the schedule. The by week is week 11. The week before Tom Brady and the Bucks travel to Germany to play Loli, Seattle, which probably will have like a 2-10 record or whatever at that time. Is there a chance Brady pulls some kind of LeBron? and says, hey, guys, I know Germany wants to see me. I'm huge in Germany like Hasselhoff. I apologize NFL. I ain't going.
Starting point is 00:14:55 I have a nagging injury, and I'm going to take the two weeks to heal at home with the supermodel wife. What are the odds? If you're giving me odds on that, what, at 20 to 1? 50? 25. 25 to 1 seems about right. Only because this is unheard of for him to skip training camp to begin with.
Starting point is 00:15:13 So he's obviously at a different plane mentally than he's. he's ever been. You know, once you start contemplating retirement, people have always said other athletes, as soon as you're thinking about retirement, you're already retired. So as much as Tom Brady is, you know, a maniac when it comes to football, there's, he's obviously in the different plane now than he's ever been. But going back to what I was saying originally with what Rick Strau reported, it wasn't a vacation, it was something very personal, something he didn't feel comfortable reporting. If it was just a vacation, it was just a getaway with Giselle, there's no shame in reporting that. He's not going to get his credentials pulled for reporting that.
Starting point is 00:15:46 So it does lead me to believe that maybe it's something as simple as, again, this is just pure speculation. Maybe he had a vasectomy. Maybe he had a colonoscopy. Like, you know, something private where it's not life-threatening. It's something that's not, you know, a medical procedure, as they would say in the headlines. Oh, he got his knee scope. No, he had an inpatient, outpatient thing. He's a couple of days recovering, whatever.
Starting point is 00:16:15 You know, something, that's what I read on it is. When I look at, there's a lot of shit going on and I think about what it could mean. I don't think, I don't think. Well, he made a point to mention his age. Oh, okay. I was thinking, you know, obviously, obviously get something's up with the wife. Maybe she was getting something done. Maybe she had a plan operation done.
Starting point is 00:16:40 Well, it's weird. You can go on IG and try to get a picture of what's, going on and like she doesn't post a lot right um if ever and it's it is weird because you know some people post frequently and you can get a window into what's going on with them and then you just have other people who are dark all the time and kind of mysterious if you will which is I think cool in 2022 right if there's an air of mystery you don't know what this person's up to what are they doing I need some more of that in my life maybe I'll do a little of that just a little bit you need a little I mean because I know what you have for lunch every day no come on
Starting point is 00:17:15 Really? Yeah. It's always like a sushi box or a food bowl or something like that. Well, hey, here's the thing. Since I have been doing Cowherd Show more, I haven't really gotten that. So I had to treat myself this week. And I did not post about it. So you're right.
Starting point is 00:17:28 Maybe I need to post a little less. But speaking of Cowherd Show, off the Brady topic real quick. So I was talking to somebody, I don't know. I think it was Friday. Like sometimes I'll just on the drive-in, I'll just like text people. and try to get on the phone with people and, you know, make the drive a little shorter. And I ended up talking to somebody from a close to a prominent player in the Bucks division.
Starting point is 00:17:55 And I was asking about this whole Tray Lance 49er stuff, what's going on? You know, what do you really? And the person said, you know, if you really want a potential comp for Tray Lance, the guy you need to look at is RG3. And I was like, why? And he's like, well, Shanahan was the O.C. in Washington in 2012. his dad was the head coach. Arjue 3 was a rookie.
Starting point is 00:18:17 Remember, they traded up for him to get him from Baylor. RG3 comes out in the first game, if you remember against the Saints, and he just puts on a show. And from there, he was unbelievable. He beat out Andrew Luck for offensive rookie of the year. He got Washington to the playoffs, and then they ended up losing to, I think it was Seattle. He got injured in the game, and he tried to play.
Starting point is 00:18:41 It was a disaster. but they're like, and just remember, RG3 was a spindly, skinny kid. Trey Lance is built not quite like a running back, but he's more like, he's way better built frame-wise than RG-3. The only problem, of course, is RG3 played 41 games in college. He had an injury, so he ended up saying an extra year. Trey Lance played 17. So RG3 came into the league with like 800 more pass attempts.
Starting point is 00:19:11 So he was a much more polished prospect. Now, the counter is, RG3 played instantly. Trey Lance had effectively a red shirt year. And this person went on to say, go look at that Washington offense. I pull up the stats. I mean, Rob, RG3, when he put up that monster rookie year, was thrown to Santana Moss and Pierre Garcant. Trey Lance now is thrown to Debo Samuel and George Kittle,
Starting point is 00:19:34 arguably two of the best at their pass-catching position in the league. And then if you look at what the 49ers did with running back, they're like four deep at running back. And, you know, they got the zone run scheme from Shanahan. Alfred Morris, they wore him down to dust in Washington in 2012. I went way deep on this because I'm nerdy. And Alfred Morris had a humongous year. I don't know if you guys remember him.
Starting point is 00:19:58 Big Al, I think he wore a number like 46. He had a huge year. 49ers are going to divide those carries up by like four different guys. And that makes it tough in fantasy. I have a fantasy story to tell you to have been it. But then I go look just for fun. I went and looked at some Tray Lance props. And remember, I think it was, was it Bernie Frotto?
Starting point is 00:20:20 It might have been Aaron Chats. I forget, but somebody had mentioned, you know, Trey Lance props are what looking at it. His rushing yards prop has gone up by 200 yards. That's how much the market thinks Tray Lance could dominate running and throwing. His odds for MVP went from 20 to 1 to about, I'm sorry, 200 to 1 to something in the neighborhood of 29 to 1 right now. And it's like, oh my gosh.
Starting point is 00:20:46 So my guy puts me on top of this. I mentioned some of it on Cowherd Show Friday. And Mark Sanchez, former Jets quarterback, comes up, talks to me like we're friends. Hey, Jay, what's up, man? I've never talked to him in my life, super friendly guy. And he's like, I got to ask, what's this jet stuff? You love the Jets. You're talking about him every day on the show.
Starting point is 00:21:06 I was like, oh, my gosh, Mark Sanchez is watching regularly? It's the guy I rooted for for the Jets. I was born in New York. So trust me, I remember your four playoff wins as well as anybody does. Trust me. And he's like, the only thing I don't like is he stole my RG3 Thunder. I was like, huh? And he's like, yeah, this RG3 stuff.
Starting point is 00:21:25 Apparently it's making the rounds in some NFL circle. So I was like proud. And Sanchez gave me the shout out on the show. And I mean, again, I've been, Rob, I think fairly negative on Lance here. I've been pro Jimmy G. and then just hearing this different voice from somebody who's in the league, to me, I got to take a pause and like, are the Niners winning this division? I mean, T.A. was on Friday pumping them up and, you know, Rams, they're not repeating.
Starting point is 00:21:55 Let's just get that clear. Arizona's not as good as they were last year. Seattle's a dumpster fire. I don't know, Rob. Did I just make a case for Trey Lance to do well? I mean, you kind of did. Which is shocking because you've been riding the Jimmy G train all off season. This feels like. I thought TA said it best on Friday show.
Starting point is 00:22:17 If T. Lance hits his ceiling, that's a Super Bowl caliber team because we've seen this rostered already with Jimmy G. The problem is we haven't seen anything from him that would lead you to believe that he can reach that ceiling. Imagine an Olympics where doping is not only legal but encouraged. It's the enhanced games. Some call it grotesque. others say it's unleashing human potential.
Starting point is 00:22:39 Either way, the podcast's Superhuman documented it all, embedded in the games and with the athletes for a full year. Within probably 10 days, I'd put on 10 pounds. I was having trouble stopping the muscle growth. Listen to Superhuman on the I-Hard Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. A win is a win. A win is a win.
Starting point is 00:23:03 Yep, that's me, Cliver Taylor the 4th. You might have seen the skits, the reactions, my journey from basketball to college football, or my career in sports media. Well, somewhere along the way, this platform became bigger than I ever imagined. And now I'm bringing all of that excitement to my brand new podcast, The Clifford Show. This is a place for raw, unfiltered conversations with some of your favorite athletes, creators, and voices that not only deserve to be heard, but celebrated. One week, I'll take you behind the scenes of the biggest moments in sports and entertainment. And the next, we'll talk about life, mental health, personal health, personal health, personal. purpose, and even music.
Starting point is 00:23:37 The Clifford Show isn't just a podcast. It's a space for honest conversations, stories that don't always get told, and for people who are chasing something bigger. So, if you've ever supported me or you're just chasing down a dream, this is right where you need to be. Listen to the Clifford show on the IHeart Radio app,
Starting point is 00:23:54 Apple Podcast, or wherever you get your podcast. And for more behind the scenes, follow at Clifford and at TikTok Podcast Network on TikTok. Do you remember when Diana Ross double-tapped Little Kim's boobs at the VMAs? Or when Kanye said that George Bush didn't like black people. I know what you're thinking. What the hell does George Bush got to do with a little Kim?
Starting point is 00:24:13 Well, you can find out on the Look Back at it podcast. I'm Sam J. And I'm Alex English. Each episode, we pick it here, unpack what went down, and try to make sense of how we survived it. Including a recent episode with Mark Lamont Hill, waxing all about crack in the 80s. To be clear, 84 is big to me, not just because of crack.
Starting point is 00:24:33 I'm down to talk about crack on day, but just so you. y'all know. I mean, at this point, this is the second episode where we've discussed crack. So I'm starting to see that there's a through line. We also have AIDS on the table right now. So, oh. Thank you for finishing that sentence. And yes, I don't think there's a more important year for black people. Really? Yeah. For me, it's one of the most important years for black people in American history. Listen to look back at it on the IHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Welcome to my new podcast. Learn the Hardway with me, your host, and your favorite therapist, Kear Games.
Starting point is 00:25:07 And in recognition of mental health awareness month, I'm bringing over a decade of my own experience in the mental health field and conversations with so many incredible guests. I'm talking, Tripp Fontaine, Ryan Clark. Sometimes when we're in the pursuit of the thing, we get so wrapped up in the chase that we don't realize that we are in possession of the thing
Starting point is 00:25:26 and we're still chasing it, and we don't know when we've done enough. Because people scoreboard watch. Life becomes about wins and losses. Steve Burns, Dustin Ross, because you find it important to be a good person while you hear on earth? Are you a good person because you're afraid? Because that's two different intentions, bro.

They've got some changes on the offensive line, not quite bucks level issues, but they've got some question, I think three
Starting point is 00:26:54 questionable dudes because they had some turnover on the inside. And we'll see. We'll see what happens. I'm definitely, I'm still a fan for Jimmy G. A fun theory I heard over the weekend was Seattle could be interested in him, but guess what? The Niners play Seattle in week two, and the Niners do not want to trade him. Seattle doesn't want
Starting point is 00:27:15 to give up anything. So they think Seattle, that the Niners will just cut him right before the season starts so he doesn't have enough time to get up on the Seattle playbook. He won't be ready for week two, at least with nothing good. and, you know, the 49ers don't want to help, quote unquote, help Seattle. I still find that hard to believe.
Starting point is 00:27:34 I've fully bought into their tanking. But, and I also don't, why would the Niners just cut him and let him go to a division rival? That just doesn't make sense, does it? Yeah, I don't see that happening. I don't. I mean, again, it's speculative. It's, I mean, the other speculative thing I heard was Kenny Goliday, who the Giants paid a million dollars, a billion dollars. That wasn't. A million is not funny.
Starting point is 00:27:58 I mean, he got like 70 mil or whatever. Kenny Galladay was bad, and apparently he's in the Brian Dable doghouse, and he was running with like the second and third stringers. And then there was a highlight, Rob. I don't know if you saw it Sunday, where he was playing with the backups, and he was supposed to be blocking downfield,
Starting point is 00:28:15 and he just pulled an OLA and just let the quarterback go right by him. It was just like, I'm not trying to block. So it's tough for me to envision the Giants cutting him. I know they have a pretty good wide receiver room there, one of the most expensive in the league. But Kenny Goliday was awesome, two, maybe three years ago with the Lions. And, I mean, if he's out there,
Starting point is 00:28:35 who, that would be a good get. I'm not bailing on him just because he had an awful year with Danny Dimes and who's a former George. I don't even remember the backup quarter of. Glennon, maybe. But they had terrible backups there. Maybe that was some of the problem.
Starting point is 00:28:52 But I don't know. You love the, NFL speculation. We'll close out real quick. Well, actually two other stories real quick. Number one. So my brother, who I helped a little bit, not that much, helped win a fantasy title several years ago,
Starting point is 00:29:08 had his fantasy draft Saturday. And I sent him my big list. I have an ongoing list anytime I read stories of my phone. Just a notes pad. I open it up like 27 guys for fantasy mid to late rounds. And one of the guys was Brian Robinson from Washington. Because it sounds like Antonio Gibson is out of favor in Washington. He's not going to be the starter.
Starting point is 00:29:30 And Robinson was kind of a sleeper to win the job. J.D. McKissick is not an every down back. Robinson had a good shot. So Sunday, it comes out that Brian Robinson, who's a rookie, was shot while walking on 8th Street, apparently to his car, or he was getting into his car. but they're calling it an attempted carjacking. I mean, it is a terrifying story. He was shot twice.
Starting point is 00:29:59 He's okay. But now the guy who was supposed to be the starting running back in Washington behind Carson Wentz is not even going to play for who knows how long because he got shot twice. First of all, six o'clock on Sunday in D.C., it's not even dark. And they're carjacking people? I mean, I just read that. I was like, oh, my God, that's awful. So anyways, there's your fantasy football, Phil, and get healthy, Brian Robinson.
Starting point is 00:30:26 I'm down on Washington. Imagine an Olympics where doping is not only legal, but encouraged. It's the enhanced games. Some call it grotesque. Others say it's unleashing human potential. Either way, the podcast's Superhuman documented it all, embedded in the games and with the athletes for a full year. Within probably 10 days, I'd put on 10 pounds.
Starting point is 00:30:48 I was having trouble stopping the muscle growth. Listen to Superhuman on the I-Hard radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. A win is a win. A win is a win. I don't care which I'm saying. Yep, that's me, Clipper Taylor the 4th. You might have seen the skits, the reactions,

Starting point is 00:32:02 double-tap Little Kim's boobs at the VMAs? Or when Kanye said that George Bush didn't like black people. I know what you're thinking. What the hell does George Bush got to do with Little Kim? Well, you can find out on the Look Back at it podcast. I'm Sam Jette. And I'm Alex English. We pick it here, unpack what went down, and try to make sense of how we survived it.
Starting point is 00:32:22 Including a recent episode with Mark Lamont Hill, waxing all about crack in the 80s. To be clear, 84 is big to me, not just because of crack. I'm down to talk about crack all day, but just so you all know. I mean, at this point, Mark, this is the second episode where we've discussed crack. So I'm starting to see that there's a through line. We also have AIDS on the table right now. Thank you finishing that sentence. Yes.
Starting point is 00:32:47 I don't think there's a more. important year for black people. Really? Yeah. For me, it's one of the most important years for black people in American history. Listen to look back at it on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Welcome to my new podcast, Learn the Hard Way with me, your host, and your favorite therapist,

I'm talking, Tripp Fontaine, Ryan Clark. Sometimes when we're in the pursuit of the thing, we get so wrapped up in the chase that we don't realize that we are in possession of the thing. And we're still chasing it. And we don't know when we've done enough. Because people scoreboard watch. Life becomes about wins and losses. Steve Burns, Dustin Ross,
Starting point is 00:33:35 because you find it important to be a good person while you hear on earth? Are you a good person because you're afraid? Because that's two different intentions, bro. Absolutely. And that's two different levels of trust. I want you to just really be a good person. Catch all of our shows at Fox SportsRadio.com. And within the IHeartRadio app, search FSports. are to listen live. We will wrap up with a little Laker chatter.
Starting point is 00:34:47 I don't have anything. Go ahead, go ahead. No, I'm just saying anything Lakers, you know, I'm ready to roll. You know, you can talk about Juan Descano Anderson, possibly getting minutes in the front court. You know, I'm ready for it,
Starting point is 00:34:58 whatever you want to do it. You're just all geek because those Laker fans were listening and writing about you on the internet. You love that, huh? They all hate me. It's great. You got to love the haters ball on the internet. I mean, anything negative about the Lakers.
Starting point is 00:35:12 So I don't know. I think back to Patrick Beverly's trade last week. Rob, did anyone have at all an ounce of a cent that that was happening? I didn't read one person anywhere say, Patrick Beverly could be a Laker. I had heard a month and ago, two months ago, it said the Lakers had had exploratory talks with Pat Bebs and then nothing. There was nothing after. Before or after he was traded to Utah? After.
Starting point is 00:35:40 It was almost immediately after because they're like, oh, you know, Pat Bev might get bought out. And they're like, oh, no, the Lakers apparently talked to him about a possible trade. And then nothing ever came of it. Because, you know, how many times you hear people say, hey, we spoke about this person. And it was obviously a non-starter. So it never spread up again. So it was one of those, like, throwaway lines that was included in an article. Okay. So basically, it came out of left field. Like, I think it shocked pretty much everybody. I was shocked, right? But anytime you expect something, I feel like it's never accurate.
Starting point is 00:36:14 Anytime the media talks about something, it just doesn't happen. We've been hearing Westbrook trades. We've been hearing Buddy Healed, which I fell for. We heard Kevin Durant. By the way, just so you know, when Kevin Durant said I want to be traded, the odds for the next to win the title went up to this 50 to 1. Because everybody thought he's gone. And whether it's Boston, Miami, Phidics, whoever.
Starting point is 00:36:33 I don't think at the time anybody had him staying, right? Now, if as time went on, people had him staying. I was kind of one of, it's like, it just makes sense. There's really no way to go. All that being said,
Starting point is 00:36:46 Rob, it feels like there is some landing spot for Russell Westbrook that we're not anticipating, right? The Pacer's thing has been rumored by way too many people for it to actually happen, right? It certainly feels that way.
Starting point is 00:37:02 Right. If everybody says, I mean, like, trust me, All these guys who were speculating, they're not, they're not ear to the ground with Rob Polinka. Like Malik Monk left for the Kings. Who had that? Nobody had that.
Starting point is 00:37:13 Malik Monk was great with the Lakers last year. So I just really quickly wanted to go through and try to find where on earth Russell Westbro could land. Could he land in Portland? I would say absolutely not. The Kings have no interest in him. OKC, none.
Starting point is 00:37:30 Houston, none. Saw what they did to John Wall. one team that I really explored this possibly too deep, Rob, was the San Antonio Spurs. Why you ask? Well, I didn't even realize this. They have the lowest win total in the NBA. Did you know that? Lowest.
Starting point is 00:37:48 I did not know that. I was stunned. I was like, really? 23 and a half. So they were projected to be the worst team in the league. Do you remember the last time they were the worst team in the league? They ended up with Tim Duncan and the jury. draft. Greg Popovich orchestrated it. They got Tim Duncan to pair with David Robinson.
Starting point is 00:38:07 You know they love European foreign prospects. Manu Genoobli, Tony Parker, all these hits. Well, Victor Wombanyama is the overwhelming number one pick for next year's draft. Overwhelming. He's 7'3. Some of these highlights make him look incredible. Like the guy's, like he looks like plastic man. If you think Chet Holmgren looks good, go look up Big Vic, dominating, right? Is there a play where the Spurs say, you know, we are rebooting, we want to play all young guys, and guess what? We don't want to win.
Starting point is 00:38:47 Do we bring in Russell Westbrook and try to boost two more picks from the Lakers? That's the only team in the West that I can see. Now, Popovich and Russell Westbrook just, they don't seem like they would work together. But guess what? They're not trying to win, right? I mean, I don't want to say they're tanking, but I mean, look at their roster, Rob. Have you, have you looked at it? No, they're tanking.
Starting point is 00:39:08 Yeah. I know you don't want to say they're tanking, but yes, they're tanking. Who is their best part? Keldon Johnson? It's got it. Romeo Langford, Jakob Pertil. I mean, Josh Primo has looked good in spurts, but he's like 19 years old. They've got some decent young guys.
Starting point is 00:39:23 They're not going to win a lot of games. But I just wonder if the spurs are the landing spot for Russ that we had not anticipated. it's pretty clear there's nobody in the east that's taken him right and of course because i say that somebody somebody dumb will take him orlando's not taking him i i think there is a team in the east that would take him not be a trade i think it would have to be a buyout can i guess sure not a trade though i think it's got to be you know rusk gets traded to san antonio utah indiana wherever bought out and then he ends up in one place that i think you can end up at in the east yes in the league actually i think there's one team that actually does make sense for russell westbrook
Starting point is 00:40:00 Well, it's definitely not Detroit. The Knicks are about to get Donovan Mitchell, we think. He did do well in Washington. Ding, ding, ding. Washington. And here's the reason why. Anybody who gets Russell Westbrook, there's got to be two things that stand out. Number one, they don't already have an established point guard or a young point guard that they're grooming in place.
Starting point is 00:40:26 So Washington doesn't have one. Up until recently, I would have said the Knicks didn't have one. They got Jalen Brunton. Now they're going to get down a bunch. They're going to have two point guards, basically. So they're out. So it leaves just Washington. Number two, whoever gets him can't be in a position where they're actually trying to tank.
Starting point is 00:40:45 And with that horrible Bradley Beale contract that they gave, the Washington Wizards have decided that they didn't rather race to the seven or eight seat at best than tank. so Russell Westbrook for all of his faults and his you know lack of concentration and his you know shots off the side of the backboard when he was in Washington he and Bradley Beale are definitely good enough to make the playoffs I don't they're not going to do make any noise but they can make the playoffs in the Eastern Conference so if you're Washington I think it makes a lot of sense wow this is crazy I just looked at this Washington roster my gosh so last year did you know because you have to play a certain amount of games to qualify. That Kyle Kuzma led them in points and rebounds and assists? I did know that. Beal only played 40 minutes, 40 games, I'm sorry. But Beal's shooting guard, Porzingis, Kuzma, Ruihachimura, a name I love to say. Gafford, Denny Avjia, Corey Kispert.
Starting point is 00:41:48 You're right, they do not. I mean, Brad Wanamaker, did they trade him or? No, I think they acquired him. Saturansky, come on. He can't be with the team anymore. ESPN doesn't even have the depth chart list. because there's so much changing. I'm just looking at their stats, but you're right.
Starting point is 00:42:02 Cassius Winston is their point card? So maybe Washington makes sense, but that's only as a buyout, right? Because you're not trading Kuzma back to the Lakers. No, it would be a buyout. It would be Utah, whatever, India, whoever pick whatever team you're thinking of, Charlotte, and he gets bought out. Go whiz.
Starting point is 00:42:23 Would you get a Kuzma jersey to celebrate his success in Washington? He was, it's, it is absolutely bonkers how quickly players rise and fall with the Lakers. I mean, remember T.HT was untouchable two years ago? And now, I mean, they, they kept THT over Alex Caruso. Remember that? Yeah, that's the big thing. I mean, people were bringing up, oh, well, you wouldn't trade him for Kyle Lowry, but you trade him for Pat Bev, and it's like, no, the Kyle Lowry trade was the entire
Starting point is 00:42:50 starting back court and your only young player. So much different. The one you should be pissed off about your Laker fan is the Alex Caruso, Caruso. Carus show. Because they didn't have to get rid of them. Like, they was just the owners being cheap. They didn't want to pay another $15 million or $20 million in luxury tax. So that's why they said, we're going to pick one or the other.
Starting point is 00:43:09 They picked wrong, and they ultimately had to trade him for an older version of the guy you let go. I wish I could find clips for Rob G. What, the 2019 Lakers, when they had Brandon Ingram, Kuzma, Caruso, a young Caruso. They were fun. LeBron, Lanzo Ball. I mean, I know you love that team. I did. They were fun to watch and they gave you something to look forward to.
Starting point is 00:43:35 And they had no chance at the playoffs and LeBron got early. Yeah, but you know, what we looked forward to was packaging all those fools to get Anthony Davis and win a championship. That's right. All right. Well, that's a lengthy Monday pod. We got big fantasy stuff this week. We probably got some more NFL gambling. I am going to Vegas this week, by the way, to lay some lumber for the NFL.
Starting point is 00:43:56 futures bets. I'll reveal some of those later in the week. But everybody stay safe out there. End of the summer. Talk to you tomorrow. Another podcast from some SNL late night comedy guy, not quite. Unhumor me with Robert Smygel and friends.
