The Herd with Colin Cowherd - Super Bowl Weekend Is Here.

Episode Date: January 31, 2020

Colin says we all need to slow down on Patrick Mahomes because he's actually struggled to win in prime time and has never played a playoff game outside of Kansas City. He makes his official pick for ...the Super Bowl. Patriots CB Stephon Gilmore tells Colin what he thinks Tom Brady will do this off-season. Plus, Hall of Famer Michael Strahan talks about his Super Bowl experiences and how even he was surprised at how they handled the undefeated Patriots. Starting point is 00:03:15 Stefan Gilmore of the Patriots, who has faced Patrick Mahomes three times. He'll be joining us. All-time Hall of Fame great Michael. Strahan is on the set with us as well today in one hour from now. Breaking it down. If you're a better, you play fantasy, you care about the game itself. Greg CoSell in one hour from now. Joy Taylor is joining me.
Starting point is 00:03:37 We start now to talk about. The actual game. Joy, how are you? I'm great. I actually have a little surprise for you. I ran into Sam Darnold last night, and I went up to him, and I told him, I work with you on the herd, and I said, you know, Colin is a big fan of yours. He's going to be very jealous that I met you. Really? Yes, and he said, I know Colin is a fan, so I'm making sure I told you that this day.
Starting point is 00:03:57 Wow. Well, I ran into some famous people, too, and I'll get back to that in a little a bit. So I'll get great co-selling one hour. Listen, I understand the media is in the story. business. And it was funny. In the last two weeks, I got, I was emailing with an NBA owner about the ratings problem. And I said, the problem this year, your stories in the NBA are not as good as the stories in the NFL. I said, the Lamar Jackson story, the Patrick Mahomes story, the decline of the dynasty, Tom Brady story, all these young, fascinating kids. I mean, even Baker Mayfield, who was on our network this morning. And he was on a bad team. And I couldn't help but
Starting point is 00:04:39 turn on Baker Mayfield and the Browns every week. I said it's been a great year for stories in the NFL. And I said it hasn't been a great year for stories in the NBA. Kevin Durant's hurt, Steph Curry's hurt, some load management. You know, most of the good players feel like they're in one city, Los Angeles. We are in the story business. So I always understand when the media goes gaga for a story. I think Patrick Mahomes is amazing.
Starting point is 00:05:05 But this is the end of Chapter 1 in about a 15-19. chapter book, and I think we're writing things and embellishing things that aren't true yet. Patrick Mahomes loses games and has bad games. He's won 27 games he started and he's lost eight. And of his eight losses, six have been in prime time. He's sub-500 in primetime games. He's five and six. He's been unbelievably ordinary.
Starting point is 00:05:37 and even when he hasn't been, his team has often let him down. His team is playing the better team, the 49ers on Sunday. Both coaches are great. Skill players are exceptional. Kansas cities are better. Defense of line, big edge, in my opinion, by San Francisco. But this is a run, oblivious offense in Kansas City. They're like 23rd in the NFL and running.
Starting point is 00:06:06 So far in the playoffs, they beat 10. Tennessee and Ryan Tannehill at home, and they beat dysfunctional Houston after falling behind 24-0 at home. They're not at home. This, in fact, is the first time Patrick Mahomes has ever played a postseason game, not at home. And Greg Olson, who has been in one Super Bowl, said, when you get used to relying on the energy of a home crowd, and you come to a Super Bowl and a corporate crowd, it is weird and hard to get going. I think back to that 15 team, we were so emotional. We were so riding high.
Starting point is 00:06:47 We were played with great energy. We rolled through the playoffs, and we just really struggled in the playoffs in the Super Bowl. We never got our rhythm. We were such a rhythm and an energy, and the energy in that stadium is zero. There's not a lot of true passionate fans. I mean, the NFC championship, we're blown out the second best team in the league, the Cardinals. your fans are going crazy, people don't sit down. The Super Bowl crowd is just different.
Starting point is 00:07:12 There was no energy. TV timeouts take 10 minutes. We just never found our groove. The better defense has won six of the last seven Super Bowls, the only exception, New England, which had a good defense, beat Seattle on a play, or it would have been 7 of 7. Yes, San Francisco's quarterback is not as talented or as flashy as Kansas City. Let's let this thing bake with Patrick Mahomes.
Starting point is 00:07:45 He's lost games, actually has struggled a tad more as have the Chiefs in bigger games, and they race through the dysfunctional AFC this year. They got a little break when Baltimore Red Hot got knocked out. They got a little break when, you know, New England's not the same team they've been. major injuries for the Patriots this year. I like Kansas City. Certainly think they can win, but this is the best defense they have faced all year.
Starting point is 00:08:15 This defense in San Francisco, the Baltimore Ravens, were putting up historic numbers. Remember that? They beat the Rams by a million on Monday night. And then San Francisco go into Baltimore, and Lamar Jackson passed for 100 yards, and the Raven scored three points
Starting point is 00:08:34 in the second half. at home, and it was the fewest yards the Ravens have had all year, and it was the second fewest points the Ravens have had all year. I love Mahomes, and I think he's really good, and I get why sometimes we get of our head of ourselves in the story business, but I like San Francisco. Wouldn't be shocked if Kansas City won, but it should be noted, the best quarterback in the NFL when trailing, if it's close, was not Mahomes, Jimmy Garoppel. was rated number one quarterback in the league passer rating when he trailed at any point of a game. That story is not as interesting.
Starting point is 00:09:15 The Bohem's story is much more fascinating. All I'm saying is sometimes in sports, we grab the better story, not the better team. Let me segue to this. Akeeb Taleb in less than 10 minutes. We've had him on before. He's just fantastic. I was talking to him in the break room. Listen, sometimes with a lot of this,
Starting point is 00:09:35 social media, it's a little generational. Right? Like, I like Twitter, although I think it's sometimes vulgar and vile and angry, but it's really a news information feed. That's really what it is. I follow, you know, your news sources and I get information. And you can have fun, but sometimes, you know, it feels a little older. Instagram is where all the let people go.
Starting point is 00:09:58 It's cooler, it's younger, it's a little hipper, it's a little sexier. and yesterday, Tom Brady went to Instagram, and he sent a cryptic message. It's one of those things like, what color is the dress, blue or gold? It's a picture of him leaving the New England Patriot Stadium. Or maybe it's a picture of him entering the New England Patriot Stadium. But what it tells me is Tom is all up in his fields. Generally, when athletes go to Instagram to send the message, it doesn't turn out well. What this tells me is Tom obviously is agitated with New England, but it also tells me this relationship is completely strained.
Starting point is 00:10:43 That Tom Brady would go to Instagram on Super Bowl Week with a cryptic social media message. You know what Bill Belichick's doing. He's rolling his eyes at this. Now, some of that's generational. He's not an Instagram guru being Belichick. But you know what this has become? One person in the relationship, Brady, is now very emotional, doesn't feel respected, doesn't feel beloved, doesn't even feel loved, and Belichick doesn't care. He's in the eye-rolling stage.
Starting point is 00:11:23 Now, maybe some of it's generational, but he's not going to budge. He sees an older quarterback. Here's a number. it or I'm out. If this wasn't a football relationship, and it was simply just a relationship, you know it's bad when some person feels ignored, some person feels disrespected, and the other person is rolling their eyes at them. They did a study years ago at the University of Washington on what creates divorces. It's not money. No, they studied hundreds of couples, and with 99% certainty, they could predict a divorce.
Starting point is 00:12:02 They could predict a divorce based on one, one emotional cue. When they interviewed the couples, if there was eye-rolling in disrespect, one didn't listen to the other's needs, it always ended 99% certainty in divorce. This relationship is beyond strain. for Tom to post something on a Super Bowl week on an Instagram, that's not great. That's why I've said before. Retiring, clean break.
Starting point is 00:12:40 Within a year, you don't mind not getting hit feels right to me. I don't think what you do in a strained relationship is rushed to get in another one, chargers, colts, dolphins. But I thought that it wasn't about what Tom was saying. it was about the fact he posted it on Super Bowl Week. Tells me all I need to know. Just an unhealthy relationship. Akeem Thalib around the corner, he is hanging out.

Sometimes when we're in the pursuit of the thing, we get so wrapped up in the chase that we don't realize that we are in possession of the thing. And we're still chasing it. And we don't know when we've done enough. Because people scoreboard watch. Life becomes about when. and losses.
Starting point is 00:15:57 Steve Burns, Dustin Ross, because you find it important to be a good person while you hear on earth, or are you a good person because you're afraid? Because that's two different intentions, bro. Absolutely. And that's two different levels of trust. I want you to just really be a good person.
Starting point is 00:16:11 Join me, Kear Gaines, is we have real conversations about healing, growth, fatherhood, pressure, and purpose on my new podcast, learn the hard way. Open your free, our heart radio app.
Starting point is 00:16:22 Search, learn the hard way, and listen now. What's up, guys? is Clever Taylor the 4th. And on my podcast, the Cliverts show, I'm bringing you conversations about all kinds of stuff. Like being an internet famous referee.
Starting point is 00:16:34 We're in the middle of a game. This linebacker, this linebacker walks up to me, he goes, hey, ref, my mom wants you to wave at her. What? Time out. Quarterback on office blue 42. Hey, rep, my mama want you to wave at her.
Starting point is 00:16:49 What? Hey, Miss Parker. Listen to the Cliverts show on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcast. Hey, I'm Jared Adano. You might know me as that loud guy who yells out, help on the internet. Help! Somebody! Please!
Starting point is 00:17:11 But there's so much more to me than that. I'm an actor. I'm a comedian. And recently, I've become quite the helper myself. And on my new podcast, Hope from a Hippocrat, I'll be changing lives, helping people in need with my sage advice and thoughtful solutions. Sike, I'm a comedian. I'm not qualified to give good advice.
Starting point is 00:17:31 Join me and my comedian friends as we riff, rant, recommend some of the most legally dubious advice known to man. If I'm calling you, even if you're on your phone, let it ring twice.
Starting point is 00:17:43 One ring is too scary. Oh, cream of chicken suit. Hey, cream. Cream a chicken suit. This is Help from a Hypocrite, the worst advice from the dumbest people you know. Listen to help from a hypocrite. as part of the Mike Coultera Podcast Network
Starting point is 00:17:58 available on the I-Hart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Ah, beautiful Miami. Our final show here, Joy and I have had an absolute great time. This Valentine's Day, ditch the chocolate and roses. Why not go to Tommyjohn.com code heard. Put that code in 20% off your first order. Valentine's Day.
Starting point is 00:18:18 I haven't seen my wife. I've seen my wife like one day in about 14 because she's been traveling. I've been traveling. I miss my dogs. I miss my wife. Oh. Akeep Talib is joining us.
Starting point is 00:18:27 So before I ever put Akeeb to leave on, he's been a great player forever, and everybody said, hey, well, Akeep Talib, would you want him on the show? And I said, well, he's great. I said, but does he like the media? What if he's grumpy? Because he's a tough guy.
Starting point is 00:18:39 And then I met Akeb to leave on the show, and you are up for a good time. I just asked you five minutes ago. I'm always a good time, Colin. You know what? I said, did you like playing at Kansas? And you said, I loved Kansas.
Starting point is 00:18:52 It was my first time. A 18-year-old. You can live on your own. I could have been in Wisconsin, Colin. It didn't matter. I was out the house. A young man growing in the world, so I was happy. And then I said you went to Tampa.
Starting point is 00:19:07 They lost some games. Did you have fun there? I love Tampa. It was a slow Miami. And, hell, you give somebody like me a couple million dollars and put them in Tampa, and how can you not enjoy that? I love you. How can you not enjoy that, Colin?
Starting point is 00:19:23 You would have been great. You've been a five-time Pro Bowl. You're kind of a free agent now. You could retire if you want. You've done well for yourself. So I want to talk about your Super Bowl experience because it's Friday now. We think and talk about the NFL network on their coverage. Yes, sir. So let's talk about you played for the Patriots but didn't get to a Super Bowl, but you played for Denver and won it and the Rams and lost it. So let's go to your first one. Akiv, it's overwhelming. You're young. It's your second team. It's a lot of lights. Was there a difference between your first and your first and your. second with the Rams? Huge difference. I mean, it was a world win. The first time, everything was going. I had my wife running crazy. My whole team was running crazy. We're trying to get houses.
Starting point is 00:20:07 I got like four or five friends, Colin, who's, they're like my brothers. I grew up with these guys. I met them when I moved to Dallas. They're my brothers. They played football with me, so I felt like when I go to the Super Bowl, they've got to come too. They've been along with the ride with me. So I had to get them a house.
Starting point is 00:20:23 I had to give my family a house. I got us cars delivered. I mean, I did the whole thing the first time, and it was crazy. But we were playing the Patriots, so my game planning was a little less crazy. Why? I mean, Cam Newton, they ran about 18 plays, so it was really like a real quiz. I could go in the room, study 18 plays, and that was my studying for the night. It was easy, so I had time to do all the other stuff.
Starting point is 00:20:51 But, you know, in my second Super Bowl, you know, You're with the Rams. I'm with the Rams. Here comes Brady and Belichick. My outside noise was a little calmer. It was easy. We had the routine down. My wife already knew what to do.
Starting point is 00:21:03 Get the two houses, the cars. That was easy. But then we was playing Tom Brady in them. So I felt like I spent a lot more time in my hotel room studying for time them. My second time, because you don't know how they're going to come out and play. It could be a three-receiver game with the Patriots. It can be a full-back running-back game, 21 personnel is what we call it. It could be a two tight-in game, 12 personnel, it's what we call it.
Starting point is 00:21:26 So we didn't really know how the Patriots were going to come out and play against us, you know. So it was like studied for a couple of different games almost. We don't know how they're going to play the game. So it was different, it was different, but it worked out. So in your first Super Bowl, it felt very early. You know, Greg Olson talked about this yesterday. He said, man, if you're used to big crowds, the Super Bowl crowd's quiet. It's all corporate.
Starting point is 00:21:50 Right. It's like not real fans. Right. So is that kind of different that you got to get yourself motivated because, you know, most of you teams that make the Super Bowl, you played all these home games. Right. And he goes to Super Bowl and it's a bunch of corporate guy in suits not cheering. Does it feel different as a game? We were so turned up on the field.
Starting point is 00:22:09 I honestly don't remember the volume of the crowd, Colin. We were so in the moment. I know it was half black and blue and half orange and blue. But besides that, I couldn't tell you the value. of the crowd. I really can't remember that. Let's go to the times. How many times have you faced Patrick Mahomes? Have you faced him
Starting point is 00:22:29 once? Okay. He's obviously special. Nobody disputes that. I faced Mahomes and I think his first start. His first start, I was in Denver. I think it was his first start. That game week, our coach kind of told us we weren't going to the playoffs. They were. So Alex Smith was probably going to rest
Starting point is 00:22:48 and that we was going to play a lot of our young guys, you know, So it was a lot of words exchanged in the building that day about that. But that's another story. That's another time. That's for offset, kind of not tell you about that. But we started that game. I think the starters, we played maybe the first two series. They probably had 10 points, the first two series.
Starting point is 00:23:07 So he got to play against the starters. And then he played against a lot of the backups. Mahomes just got it, man. You could tell he had control of the game. You could tell he prepared to play. He prepared to start that whole week. And he just had demand. and a control of the game.
Starting point is 00:23:23 And after the game, me, Von, Chris, TJ, all the vets on the team, we were like, oh, he the truth. He's going to be great. You can just see it. You can see it playing against him. Akeep Taleb joining us. When you say he has control of the game,
Starting point is 00:23:38 explain that to my audience that maybe hasn't played football. Control of the game. It's just a confidence that it flows throughout the rest of the offense. He gets to the line. He sees something. He makes a check, you know? He sees something.
Starting point is 00:23:51 He'd hurry up. He see us scrambling, looking like we're subbing or something. He hurry up, run the play. So it's just, you just know what's going on. You could tell him and Andy Reid. Andy Reid is the quarterback whisperer. And you could just tell he whispered to Mahomes all weekend. My homes was more than ready to go when he played our game. Now, Jimmy Garoppolo's not as flashy. He's seven and one in prime time games. He actually has the best quarterback rating in the league passer rating anytime he trails in a game. So he's got an it quality. You're talking about Garoppolo? Garoppolo.
Starting point is 00:24:22 Okay. You know, you've seen a little Garapolo in your career. Okay, you're a ram. You're in the same division with him. What, when you play him, what are you, he's not as brilliant. I mean, he doesn't have the arm strength, but he's got to have something. Akeb. He keeps winning all these big games.
Starting point is 00:24:38 I think he got a brain, and he has a great head coach officer coordinator. So I think their situation is more like, more like Jared Goss and Sean McVays. You know, it's, it's a, it's hand in hand. It's hand in hand. Now, the chiefs as well, you know, Andy Reid has a lot to do with my home success. But Garoppolo's situation, man, he's been around great coaches. He's been around, been around, you know, great teams. So I think that rubs off on him, man.
Starting point is 00:25:05 His confidence is there. And that confidence, man, it breeds success and it's contagious. So, you know, a confident quarterback, you feel a little bit better going into that game when your quarterback is confident. So I think a lot of what Jimmy brings to the table is just a confidence that spreads throughout that whole San Frant team. I had a coach tell me that two days ago off the air. He said, some things you can't explain.
Starting point is 00:25:32 Have you gone into games and you had a quarterback that you didn't think he felt confident? You can sense it. Oh, yes. More than, more than I can say on air, you know. So it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, different, man. You go in the game with Peyton and Tom Brady, you always feel like you got to win. So some other guys I play with, it's like, man, the defense, we're going to have to do our thing
Starting point is 00:25:57 tonight. We can't give up 14 points today. So, I mean, I've been on teams like that, you know. It's tough. Yeah. So you spent time in New England. You were valued there. Belichick loves corners, loves corners. Tom Brady yesterday came out with a cryptic Instagram, I saw it. I followed Tom. And what did you think? I like the photo. It is, well, it's one of those.
Starting point is 00:26:24 Is he coming in the stadium? He's going out the stadium. It looks like he's going out the stadium to me. I mean, it's like a farewell post. I don't want to, you know, I'm just speculating like everybody else. But it looked like the ultimate farewell post to me to his fans and, you know, walking out of an empty stadium. Like he went and he viewed it one more time and then he left it, you know.
Starting point is 00:26:47 So me, part of the game. The criticism, Tom's been agitated for a couple of years. I watched this documentary. And he had final editing control. And his wife at one point said, you know, he just liked to feel a little more respected. When you were in the building, I think you told me this once. There is no real, even Brady's not a star. Like everybody's just even there.
Starting point is 00:27:11 Right. Do you think that maybe after all these years, just, I mean, I'm okay. He's human. Right. He's kind of over that. He wanted somebody put his arm around him a little bit? I mean, he's Tom Brady, so I mean, he is a star in our league. You're the ultimate star in our league.
Starting point is 00:27:26 But like you said, sometimes change the scenery is good, man. You do something for 20 years straight, and sometimes you just want to change the scenery. You know, you want to see if you could do it without this team, without this organization. You want to see if it's me or if it's you guys. So all this time have been hand in hand. So we don't know. We don't know if it's bill. We don't know if it's time.
Starting point is 00:27:44 We don't know if it's Mr. Craft. So maybe he just want to explore his options and see if he can do it by itself. Get with a good football team and see if he can win something by itself. Akeb, you moved several times. You seem to flourish in it. You went from Tampa. You got better in Denver. And you go to New England.
Starting point is 00:28:03 You were great. Then you went to the Rams and you were crucial. Why was it so easy for you to just go to a different system and you flourished him? I'm a social. I'm a people person, Colin. So, you know, I was one of them kids who, In high school, we get out of school at 1.40, and at 5 o'clock, I probably was still up at the school. You know, I'm just like being around people, so you put me in a room with different people.
Starting point is 00:28:25 I'm just going to adjust and learn on the fly. I'm a smart guy. I'm a straight A's, and so about high school, then it turned to A's and B's, you know. So I'm a smart guy. I can learn a playbook, and football is easy to me. Once I learn the concept of what we're trying to do, everything else is just being social and being one of the guys, being a team player. I'm a social guy, so it's easy to be a team player. See, isn't that likable?
Starting point is 00:28:50 It's a big part of the locker room. Just getting along with people, not being rigid. Now, if you're social, and that means if you're social, you're up for a good time. Definitely. Did you ever have at least one night in either of your Super Bowl trips, or your good time, you went a little, maybe a little more than a good time? No. I think both times, we went to the Super Bowl. I think in Denver, I want to say we went out there on a Monday.
Starting point is 00:29:17 I think we parted on Monday, Tuesday, and after that, I was locked in, you know. And our last trip, we went to Atlanta, I think the same. We may have went out Monday and Tuesday, or maybe just Tuesday, and after that, we was locked in. So, I mean, I don't know what the other guys was doing, but, you know, I was going against Tom Brady. I'm trying not to get embarrassed out here, you know, so trying to have a good feel for how the game going to be played. So I didn't really had time to party like that. Akeep Taleb. I love having you, man.
Starting point is 00:29:43 Always love having you on the show. It's always a pleasure, Colin. I love doing the show. Akeem to leave. Awesome. Joy with the news. No, no, no, no, turn on the news. This is the herd line news.
Starting point is 00:29:56 So Tua was around doing some interviews yesterday, as was his agent. And Tua could be drafted by a team that expects him to start as a rookie this year, despite the injury. And his agent, Lee Steinberg, hopes the Tua gets the opportunity to watch and learn first. He said, if you look at Aaron Rogers, Carson Pee. Palmer, Philip Rivers, none of them started the first year. My wish for two would be that he would go to a team that would give him a year to learn the system and do everything before the pressure of being a starting quarterback was upon him. I don't know if I love my agent saying that I need a year to get ready to start in the NFL. You know what he needs? The right coach. The right coach. The right coach. The right system. But also, the right coach. He's the right coach. He'll make a prediction. He'll have a great career. Well, the right coach and, you know, the right system, but also he is right. I just don't know if I love the agent saying that he should take it.
Starting point is 00:30:48 You know, we were talking about this this morning. You can win in this league sitting, Aaron Rogers, Brady for a year, Mahomes, but you can also win coming out and playing. I don't think that is the, I mean, Russell Wilson walked in and played. I think it all comes down to, do you get a, think about this, Joy, name a great quarterback, an all-time great quarterback. who had mostly average coaches. And we came up with like Kurt Warner. Right. I mean, if the coach,
Starting point is 00:31:16 if you don't get the coach right in the NFL, the career doesn't go right. Because it's the ultimate team sport. It's not basketball. It's not, it's just, there's too many moving parts. There's a whole other side of the ball that you don't even affect.
Starting point is 00:31:28 So you have to get in the right system, the right team, the right amount of talent, and of course the right coach. But if you look at the draft, so obviously the Bengals, we're assuming are going to take Burrow, see the dolphins, chargers, and Panthers are in the, you know,
Starting point is 00:31:39 quarterback race. Any of those places have guys in place that could start that he could sit behind. And the offensive Ryan Fitzpatrick, obviously the Chargers have moved on from Phillip Rivers, but, you know, they're not in a bad situation either. I got to tell you something. If I'm Tua, this injury stuff will scare off all the dumb teams and you're going to end up with like the Chargers or Carolina or Brian Flores and you're going to have a great career. I worry about the first quarterback taken. I don't, if Tua's the second or third, he's going to end up with smart coach and non-dumb people. The only reason why I would like for him to go to a place where there's a veteran
Starting point is 00:32:14 quarterback that he can sit behind is because of the injury. It's not because if he's 100% healthy, he can go out there and start. So Patchmore Holmes said this week that he ended up in the perfect place, and he hopes to spend his entire career in Kansas City. And head coach Andy Reid thinks that Mahomes should be giving former teammate Alex Smith a lot of credit for his early success. Show them out to be a pro. So how you study your diet, your workout plan, you know, family, how you work your family into the National Football League,
Starting point is 00:32:46 been a great player in the National Football League. So, you know, I joke about it, but it's true that Patrick couldn't pay Alex enough for what he gave him with that experience. So we're just discussing that, but that was a part of Patrick Mahom's success. aside from going to Kansas City Chiefs, is a great organization, great fan base, and Andy Reid with a lot of talent, sitting behind Alex Smith, who's the ultimate pro, learning how to be a professional is a big transition.
Starting point is 00:33:17 We talked about this. You know, Ken Griffey's dad's a major league baseball player, Barry Bond's dad. If you can watch the life before you live the life, that's a little bit like a quarterback coming in and watching Alex Smith, like Daniel Jones, all these young quarterbacks. If you can watch the life you're supposed to live,
Starting point is 00:33:33 Instead of having to live it without watching it, you know, your dad, I mean, there's so many pro athletes whose parents were pro athletes. They, they, they, they, it's not a jarring experience. It's not first time you've been around a batting cage or in camp and gotten yelled at by a coach. Well, think about this also. We, we talk to guys all the time about, you know, what it was like their rookie year and, you know, who, who they look up to. Every other position, you're not coming into the league expecting to be the guy. You almost certainly have a veteran in the locker room who plays your position. Right.
Starting point is 00:34:02 who may even be starting over you, who's going to show you what to do. There's a multitude of guys who can help you, but the quarterback usually has no one. He may have a backup quarterback, but it's, you know, who knows what kind of career that guy has had. So to come in, to have somebody who's a veteran and respected show you what to do is invaluable. So, Dak Prescott is hoping to get a contract extension from the Cowboys and avoid the franchise tag, and he wouldn't commit to participating in the team's offseason program without that long-term deal. He said, we'll get to that. when we get to that, I look forward to talking to my agents,
Starting point is 00:34:33 and when that comes to play, the direction that will go until that's a reality. I won't worry about it. But I do feel like some of this should get done. I'm a little disappointed that it hasn't, but that's part of it. In my brain, it only says that it gets done without the tag, but that's business. That's all on them. So this is kind of the most direct comment that Dak Prescott has made about his contract up since this point,
Starting point is 00:34:57 because he's been great throughout the year about not making it about his contract. It's about the team. It's about the season. We'll talk about it afterwards. And pretty much the Cowboys and his agents have been pretty quiet about it too. But that was a pretty direct. I was around a bunch of members of the Dallas Cowboy family life. Oh, okay.
Starting point is 00:35:13 They like that. I think we all like Doc. But this could get a little messy if he decides he's not going to play under the franchise tag. You know, listen, guys want their money. He deserves his money. He's playing in a fourth round rookie contract. It's the biggest bargain in the league. Yeah, it didn't help him this year.
Starting point is 00:35:31 Second half of the year, he didn't have, as Goulet pointed out in every meeting. Second half of the year, he didn't look good against better defenses. And he didn't look all great. He put up yards, but. Let's think macro, not micro, okay. You got a new coach now. I'm not disagreeing. It just, I get the critics of Dak.
Starting point is 00:35:47 I feel like you have some, I feel like you have some inside information that you're trying to. I'm just, no, I don't have it. The thing with Dak is, you know, he's not, he doesn't pop as his sensational arm talent, but he, he pops on all. You know, it's like Doug Gottlieb said. His intangibles are incredible. Sometimes his tangibles aren't as good. And so it is hard.
Starting point is 00:36:05 How do you reconcile that when you watch all these guys? And you're like, it doesn't run like this guy. I didn't throw like this guy. I didn't have the size of this guy, the mobility of this guy. And it's hard. You're like, we don't want it to be Kirk cousins and these more Kirk cousins than my homes. And I, this stuff's hard. What do you always say don't go cheap on toilet paper and quarterbacks?
Starting point is 00:36:20 Toilet paper, transportation and quarterbacks. Joy with the news. Well, that's the news. And thanks for stopping by. The herd lie news. All right, Juju Smith-Schuster. He's a former USC Trojan burst on to the scene with the Pittsburgh Steelers. He has never been in this Super Bowl, unlike Akib Talib, or Stefan Gilmore or Michael

Starting point is 00:41:24 With a Strong Brew By the way, I just talk to this is fascinating. So Sam Farmer writes for the LA Times. He did a story this week on Adam Cook. That was Patrick Mahomes High School football coach. So for all you parents out there that won't let your kids play other sports, Patrick Mahomes did not start at quarterback in high school as a freshman. He did not start in high school at quarterback as a sophomore. He was the shortstop and the point guard on the basketball team and the baseball team. And no, Nobody knew his coach didn't know which sport is he going to play.
Starting point is 00:42:04 So when you watch Mahomes play, you can see him sometimes sidearm it. That's the baseball shortstop coming out. And then you can see him do no look stuff. That's the point guard coming out. In this world we live in, you got to get everybody, you know, to play one sport and to be dominant. And Urban Meyer and I talk about this. He's like, I want to see my linebackers have to defend on a basketball court. I want to see my offensive tackle before he goes all football.
Starting point is 00:42:30 Can he play third base? Can he be in track? Can he play another team sport? So as Coach Adam Cook just talked about it, he said, you know, we didn't know. We thought he could be great in basketball. He was really better in basketball early. Then he was better at shortstop early. And all of it, he didn't win the job.
Starting point is 00:42:45 He didn't win the job as a freshman. His buddy beat him out, his childhood friend. He didn't win the job as a sophomore. And then all of a sudden he gets to be a junior and he starts moving into the football thing. But, you know, the reality is with this stuff, sometimes as parents, more hours, 10,000 hours, just play this, being able to do multiple things. And now when you watch Patrick Mahomes,
Starting point is 00:43:08 I mean, you can really see the entirety. You know, by the way, Tom Brady played baseball and got drafted. Russell Wilson played baseball. Kyler Murray played baseball. This stuff helps. I'm a huge believer in, I guess what I would call it, cross-training. So when I was in high school, everyone on the football team ran track.
Starting point is 00:43:28 Now, you might not have a whole run, but you were going to do an event, you were going to do training, you were to stay in shape, or you were going to throw, you know, javelin or discus or shot foot or whatever, the bigger guys. It also doesn't wear down certain parts of your body because even though 10,000-hour rule, obviously that's going to make you great at something,
Starting point is 00:43:44 but it's also going to put a lot of wear and tear on your body before you get to the pro level. It's very important. Yeah, by the way, Andy Reid has been talking. This is one of these games where we have an incredible flashy quarterback, and then we have a little bit more of what people perceive as a system quarterback. You can win both ways in the NFL.
Starting point is 00:44:04 You can win both ways. We've had quarterbacks who were flashy in this game. We've had Elway. We've had Farr, we've had Marino, we've had Aaron Rogers, we have Patrick Mahomes. We've also had Breeze and we've had Brady and we've had Montana. You know, Russell Wilson, obviously, I think, falls into the flashy category. Andy Reid this week, I'll play a little bit, was talking about Jimmy Garoppolo, who we've all sort, I haven't because I think Garoppolo is tremendous.
Starting point is 00:44:29 He's seven and one in primetime games. That's better than Mahomes. His winning record is outstanding. He's one with two teams, two coaches. Andy Reid talked about the quarterback nobody's talking about. I respect the heck out of them. I think Jimmy, they've been running the ball here, but Jimmy, if you really look at his quarterback ratings,
Starting point is 00:44:50 as percentages, all the statistical facts about him. you see that he's a heck of a quarterback throwing the football. So you've got to, when you come in to play the 49ers, you better be ready to play a complete game in the run-end pass game. By the way, don't forget the last three Super Bowls. I know y'all love Flash, but the last three Super Bowls, it was Brady against Gough, Brady against Nick Foles, and Brady against Matt Ryan.
Starting point is 00:45:23 That's your last three Super Bowls. So the idea that Flash wins this thing, Flash sometimes blows us away. It doesn't win this game all the time, and it doesn't get to this game as much as you think. Again, Garoppolo is the best quarterback in the NFL when trailing. He's got the highest passer rating. He is the best fourth quarter passer rating quarterback when trailing. He has the best prime time record, 7 and 1. In terms of career starts, he's got the highest win percentage for anybody over 20,
Starting point is 00:45:54 five career starts in the NFL. So, and I know a lot of you are into this. He's got the coach. He's got the defense. He's got the running games. You just got to settle down on this stuff. He's a slow growth quarterback. So was Brady.
Starting point is 00:46:06 So was Aaron Rogers sat for three years. Drew Bree starts in San Diego, then goes to New Orleans. Listen, some stocks are Bitcoin. They fly up, crash down. Some stocks, you know, they, it's, I always say this about business. You forget how long it took for Amazon to rule the world. Amazon was an online bookstore. Ten years later,
Starting point is 00:46:29 uh-oh, here comes retail's biggest tsunami. You forget that Netflix started selling VHS tapes. You forget that Starbucks started in 1971. Starbucks didn't really have a national imprint of note. I didn't start drinking it until the mid-80s, the late 80s. I mean, literally, they didn't brew coffee initially. I mean, so everything, you think everything is, like the overnight sensation. The truth is there are a lot of slow growth models to everything.
Starting point is 00:46:59 I remember when I started this show, I'm like, I told the staff, don't look at ratings for 18 months. You know how long it took to make ESPN? How long it's going to take for us to keep competing and keep competing? It's just a reality of it. So next hour we're packed, by the way. Juju Smith, we don't have time now. It's just too late. We do not have time. Greg Kossel, Stefan Gilmore, Tason Hill, and Michael Strand will be joining us. we will be packed for the rest of the day. By the way, Jimmy Garoppolo said something I want to touch on. And I know I've been very pro Jimmy Garoppolo this week because I like San Francisco.
Starting point is 00:47:32 And I do think Mahomes is flashier and more fun and he's getting more media coverage. I get it. I totally understand it. Jimmy Garoppolo is not as flashy. It's more of a run-centric offense with a defensive line. For the record, that's exactly what Tom Brady's teams were when he first met it into the NFL. But, you know, I was sitting around thinking this morning as Garapolo was talking about his experiences with Tom Brady. how he could watch, how he talked. And he said, you know, I didn't ever want to get in too close to Tom.
Starting point is 00:47:59 I didn't want to be annoying to Tom. He goes, but, you know, he invites me to the Kentucky Derby. It was a tight circle. I was one of the boys. He pitched me a lot of crap. I pitched him some. But, you know, the reality, here's what Garapolo and Patrick Mahomes have in common. This is what they have in common. If you told me, now, the number is very important here. But if you told me today, right now, over the next, decade. Now, I want you to think about that number because that's not going to count Brady. It's not going to count Big Ben. You know, Philip Rivers is going to leave. Now, he may not find another team. If we're talking about the next 10 years in the NFL, and you told me who's going
Starting point is 00:48:40 to win the most games at quarterback, I'm not going to predict or project who's going to win Super Bowls. I would put Mahomes, Lamar, Wentz, Garapolo, and Russell Wilson in. You say, what about Deshawn Watson? I do not trust the Houston Texans organization. I could easily see Deshawn Watson not winning another division. Well, what about Sam Darnold? I love Sam, but I read a story yesterday, and Joy is hanging out with Sam and doesn't tell me until the show. I saw a story yesterday where the locker room is fractured. So if you're telling me, I got, I got to pick five quarterbacks over the next decade of winning this league. You know what all of them have in common? Mahomes has Reed,
Starting point is 00:49:24 Wentz has Doug Peterson, Lamar's got Harbaugh, Jimmy's got Kyle Shannon and Russell Wilson, has Pete Carroll. So that's where they have in common. There's different means and ways to get to the wins,
Starting point is 00:49:34 but I think Garoppolo and Mahomes are going to be here for the next 10 years. You can look up in 10 years, who won more games. It's not just about talent. I could, and I love Deshawn. I think Deshawn and Sam Darnold are very similar players.
Starting point is 00:49:46 I don't think they throw the prettiest football. I think they're playmakers. They often throw better moving out. ad-libbing off script than they do in the pocket. Sometimes they don't look comfortable in the pocket. Both have played under behind awful offensive lines. It's been the worst part of their football team with good, sometimes great defenses. But I could see Donald fizzling out and having a lot in 8, 8 and 8, 7, 9, and 7 seasons.
Starting point is 00:50:10 Because he just doesn't have the right coach. I mean, if Adam Gase doesn't win this year, it's over. Now, Deshawn Watson's got Bill O'Brien, who's not going to get fired because he's won divisions, and he just now signed a deal, so he's the head coach and the GM, so he's not going to fire himself anytime soon. But I don't think that's a well-run organization. So I will say that there's a lot of different ways to do this. We get caught up in succeeding early.
Starting point is 00:50:32 In my life, the people I've worked with, almost everybody that goes slow growth, has some obstacles, has some hurdles, but gets with a good organization. You don't rely on them. The downside to having Mahomes is initial burst of talent and stats. The pressure is on Patrick Mahomes. If he does not win Sunday, you're going to hear stories. Mark my words. They'll be written all over the country by Monday.
Starting point is 00:50:59 Is Andy Reed the right guy for Patrick Mahomes? This is two years in a row. They should have won the Super Bowl. You're not going to get that with Garoppolo. There's more patience. You don't have an owner hearing, I've got to win Super Bowls or this is a disaster. All right. My Super Bowl pick coming up next, and Baker Mayfield had a very, very good day.
Starting point is 00:51:21 Machel and Endurance XT silicone wiper blades last two times longer available at Walmart only at Walmart live from Miami back for hour two and a Friday we're packed after this one more herd the herd streams 24 hours a day seven days a week within the iHeart radio app search herd to listen live or on demand whenever you'd like oh live in Miami this is the herd wherever you may be and however you may be listening. We're on IHeart Radio, Fox Sports Radio, and FS1. Joy Taylor is joining me. It is great to have you in Miami. Greg CoSell this hour, Stefan Gilmore of the New England Patriots stops by later this hour. He's been in many of these Super Bowls and he's faced Patrick Mahomes three times. Stefan Gilmore has been great, great against Patrick Mahomes. In fact, Mahomes is passerating
Starting point is 00:52:20 against Stefan Gilmore is 53.4. Not to get into data and numbers, but it is. It's great to have you here, Joy. Are you ready to go? Are we ready to go for Sunday? Let's do it. Are we giving our picks now? I'm going to give, all right.
Starting point is 00:52:32 I'm just going to give you my pick. I'm going to break it down. I've told you all week, I like San Francisco. I think there's a lot of different ways that San Francisco can beat you. It wasn't a win that impressed me about San Francisco this year. It was a loss to Baltimore. Baltimore was tearing the league up. In fact, if you go back to when San Francisco went to Baltimore, if you go back to that week,
Starting point is 00:52:57 they were just off games in November when they had, it was like college football. They beat New England by 17, Cincinnati by 36, Houston by 34, and the Rams by 39. And San Francisco has to travel cross-country missing Kwan Alexander, their most athletic linebacker, and Baltimore has their fewest points all year, their second fewest yards, Lamar passes for 100 yards, and Baltimore is held to three points in the entire second half. That's the game. We knew San Francisco was good, but how could they match up with the hottest team in the NFL? Baltimore at that time was scoring more than Kansas City.
Starting point is 00:53:41 So I'm going to give you my thoughts about this game and numbers that I look at. Let's start with it. You could even do NFL music if you wanted to. I don't even give a rip. Here we go. I like the Niners. The top two total defense. If you're a top two defense in the NFL and you play in the Super Bowl, you are 17 and 7.
Starting point is 00:54:04 Pretty good numbers. When a top two offense plays a top two defense, chiefs and Niners, four times the defense has won three of them. The 49ers had 57 sacks this year. Every team in the last 15 years to enter with at least 55 sacks in a Super Bowl is 6 and 0. By the way, the Niners played several teams that scored more points, more points on average than Kansas City. Tampa Bay, the Ravens, and the Saints. They won two and held Tampa and Baltimore under 21. points. Kansas City, eight of their last nine losses, and is when they lose time of possession,
Starting point is 00:54:53 and San Francisco's a top five time of possession team in the NFL. By the way, I also think the schedule for San Francisco has been so much more formidable since November. Look at the Chiefs. They face the 28th best defense in the Texans and the 21st in the Titans. It is a massive leap to play San Francisco's defense. By the way, the only time Kansas City this year faced a defense statistically better than San Francisco, it was New England. Patrick Mahomes had one TD, that's it, a pick and a passer rating of 83. I have the team with the better defense, a remarkable pass rush that doesn't have to bring more people to, and create that pass rush. I'll take the Niners to win it, 36 to 28, take a lead, pin their ears back.
Starting point is 00:55:49 Mahomes has to throw with next to no running game on their best day. I'll take the Niners here. I know Andy Reid is great off a buy, and I know Mahomes can score as quickly as anybody that's played the position in years, both valid. It's why I wouldn't put a lot of lettuce down on this game. I like San Francisco. I don't love the pick because I think Mahomes and Andy Reed with extra time are just a nightmare
Starting point is 00:56:17 and a track meat to face, but I'll take the Niners here. I want to segue to this as well. You know I've been very critical of Baker Mayfield. Very critical of Baker Mayfield. And here's how it works at a sportscaster. I have strong opinions.
Starting point is 00:56:38 And if I'm wrong, you let me have it. But if I'm right, you don't want to hear about it, and you quickly segue to, well, I mean, you're obsessed about blank guy. So I get a lot of this. You're obsessed about Baker Mayfield. No, I was right about Baker Mayfield.
Starting point is 00:56:57 You were wrong, and you just want to segue to another argument, because you wouldn't stop your Twitters at me if you were right. He's got, in 29 games played in the NFL, 35 picks. He's had lousy judgment. He's been cocky for two years. He needs to grow up, be more measured and mature. Now, I get young guys sometimes feel like if they're not real,
Starting point is 00:57:19 and they don't tell you exactly how they feel, they're not keeping it real, I get that. But that's why quarterback is not a wide receiver. You've got to be a politician. And I thought Baker Mayfield showed up on first things first this morning and was measured and was smart and showed growth and was maturing, I really liked what I saw. He owned some stuff, realizes now he's got to get better. Here was a mature and measured Baker Mayfield on first things first this morning.
Starting point is 00:57:55 How do you get back to me in the Baker Mayfield that you've been every step of your career aside from this past season? What do you need to do? Focus on the things that I can control. Work on my game, work on getting better as a quarterback as a leader. getting around my guys, whatever happens to our team, our roster, you know, getting around those guys very early on to where we feel like a unified group and just getting better, you know, like I said, on my own stuff. Not turning the ball over, taking care of that. I can't handle that stuff until season comes around. But I can work on scheme-wise learning this new playbook with our new staff and getting into that, diving into it to where when we report in April, it's go time. I'm excited about this new staff and where everything's headed. But it's a new energy for us.
Starting point is 00:58:37 We got a young group. We had a young group last year, but I'm excited where it's headed. By the way, you may be surprised to hear this. I'm not rooting against Baker Mayfield. I find it hard to root against young people. Thankfully in my career, most of my people around me, even my critics, I don't think rooted against me. I also think he's going to have a very, very good bounce back year.
Starting point is 00:59:00 Unlike Brown's fans, I like the moves they've made. I like Kevin Stefansky. he's a grown-up, I think Baker Mayfield's going to have a nice year in the NFL. Now, I do not think in that division I'm going to pick the Browns to win it, because I think the problems there are systemic, and they start with the owner. But I'm not rooting against Baker. I watched a lot of Baker. I don't root against people.
Starting point is 00:59:23 I've already been proven right on this. So if you think I'm rooting to be righter than right, you're wrong. He's going to bounce back. He's going to have a good year. and I thought this morning the word I would use, measured. You don't always have to show everybody what you ate on Instagram, and you don't have to say everything you truly feel on Twitter. Sometimes as a politician, i.e. a franchise quarterback,
Starting point is 00:59:47 take a deep breath, move to the next topic. You're the leader of a $2 billion franchise. Good luck to Baker. I thought he was good today. Now, I've been doing this thing all week. It's called Trading Faces. It's odd and terrifying. My favorite one is Sunday.
Starting point is 01:00:08 This is my latest installment, including Baker Mayfield. And I think what you'll see is his twin brother is Kevin Stefansky. Here it is. Colin spends most of his time talking about your favorite football stars. I mean, Baker's gotten two coaches fired already. But today, he's talking as them. You don't play? You don't know it.
Starting point is 01:00:29 This is true. trading faces. You know, I can only imagine what it must have been like when Kevin Stefansky has a surprise choice as Brown's head coach and Baker Mayfield got together for the first time in Cleveland. I mean, you know Baker saying, wait a minute, I've been here a couple years. You are not what I'm expecting. You're not Josh McDaniels.
Starting point is 01:00:51 And Stafansky's saying, you're not Kirk Cousins, okay? If you're the face of our franchise, we need you to step it up. Guys going to want to spend January playing football, not shooting progressive commercial. commercials. We need a leader. Hey, I'm a leader here. Okay, I am a leader. I led the AFC at interceptions. You sound a lot like Colin Coward, a lot like him, actually. I'm over that guy. How do you think Baker would react if Stefansky wanted to trade OBJ? Coach, coach, coach, no, he's my guy. ObJ's my guy. We got so much in common. Swag, dance moves, cool hats, both have police videos now. We can make it work on the field. But I need your advice on one thing, coach. Where do you?
Starting point is 01:01:31 you get your beard trim. I got to be honest. That is nice. Your beard is tight. I had issues with mine all season long. Another edition of trading faces. I swear I won't bring up that video anymore. I won't. I'll be nice from this point. Those are so great. All right. The best one Sunday, by the way. All right. Friday, we had a lot of fun this week. We just have fun. You've had video crews all around. We have video people. By the way, give it up for our people on the floor who have been Unbelievable this week. Amazing job. Discover.com slash cashback matched. Greg CoSell has worked at NFL films for 40 years. he just handed me something off the air. It's the best piece of literature since the Declaration of Independence. He has every quarterback,
Starting point is 01:07:41 all his film study on the top 10 college quarterbacks in this draft, Joy saw me react like a child. Yes, you truly love the draft. I've never met anyone who loves the draft. I absolutely love the NFL draft. I know you do. The whole dang weekend.
Starting point is 01:07:57 All right, so you watch film, this is what you do. And you're not a big fan of picking games, but you have always given me directions. Right. And so let's start with Mahomes. I had Russell Wilson on yesterday. What does the film tell you on Mahomes? How many of these running yards are generated via script or just ad-libbing off-script? Well, they're ad-living off-script.
Starting point is 01:08:20 And I think that's one of the things that makes him really, really difficult, because obviously he's a very, very good thrower from the pocket. And the play designs that Andy Reid puts together are really good. I think you'll see a lot of what Andy Reid does in this game with different personnel and different positions. And that's what he does so well. But the thing with Mahomes is he's able to move and create. And when he moves, Colin, he doesn't move to check it down. He moves with great vision with his eyes down field to throw intermediate and deep balls.
Starting point is 01:08:51 And that makes it really difficult on defensive coverage, whether it's man or zone. So you're facing a team San Francisco with 57 sacks. Teams with over 55 sacks are 6 and 0 in the Super Bowl. So Kansas City is going to have to neutralize what will be perhaps their fiercest pass rush they have faced. Right. Is their offensive line good enough? Pretty good at tackle, isn't it?
Starting point is 01:09:17 Yeah, it's pretty good at tackle. The big question, because they will close down the pocket at times. They will collapse the pocket at times. The question is how they choose to pass rush. When you face a quarterback that can get outstall, side the pocket and then make special throws, the question is, does your pass rush become a little limited by design? In other words, are you pulling back a little
Starting point is 01:09:39 because you don't want him to get outside the pass rush, and therefore you're not just attacking him the way you normally would? Because the 49ers are really good with stunts, where they loop a player behind another player, they're really good with that. The question is, how much of that will they do? Because you do not want Mahomes getting outside the pocket.
Starting point is 01:09:59 That's what breaks down your cover. As you know, watching film, teams are different in September than they are later. Kansas City had some new defensive players. And in October, they looked like one defense. And it looked like to me, I mean, you know, you get another 250 snaps on defense. Kansas City's defense looked sharper, gave up fewer big plays later. Did it not on film? No, they did.
Starting point is 01:10:24 And this to me is as key a matchup as there is in the game. as we just did, we talked to Mahomes, and he's critical. But I think that Kyle Shanahan, Colin, is the best play caller in the league designer in terms of one thing, understanding the responsibilities of defensive players. So think of it this way. If you're playing zone, you're linebackers and if there's a box safety, they have both a run and a pass coverage responsibility, if you're playing zone. I think Kyle Shanahan is a master at attacking that conflict and forcing those people. players to be in conflict and not seeing what they think they're seeing. So the run-pass fusion,
Starting point is 01:11:05 the run game and the play action pass game with Kyle Shanahan look exactly the same, and those second-level defenders are put in conflict. I think Shanahan is the best in the league at that. So a defensive player plays look the same. By the way, they look the same. I remember talking to players who faced Bill Walsh. Right. And they would say, I swear to God, they run a dozen plays out of four sets. It's the simplicity of it. They look, they don't need, and here's the other thing, the 49ers don't need to establish the run.
Starting point is 01:11:36 The run's already established. They're a running team and they're really good at it. They don't have to come out and run the ball. In fact, I think Kyle's going to be very aggressive at a base personnel with Kyle Eusecheck on the field. Eusecheck plays about 45% of the offensive snaps more than any other team in the league that plays with a fallback, and I think they will throw out of that.
Starting point is 01:11:57 Very similar to what they did against the Saints. Remember that Saints game? Yes. Where they came out and they knew they had to score points, they came out very aggressively. It would not surprise me at all to see them do that in this game. Listen, I was saying this. Mahomes is actually five and six in primetime games.
Starting point is 01:12:12 The mythology almost now leaps the reality, which is he's terrific, but this is chapter one of a 15-page book. Garoppolo, seven and one in primetime games, his passer rating leads the NFL when he trails. He's better than we think, in Mahomes is not quite the Paul Bunyan. That's because, Colin, people view Garapolo, and this is not a derogatory term.
Starting point is 01:12:32 People view Garapolo is a system quarterback because Kyle's system is so good. Even though Andy's system is so good, people tend to view Mahomes because he makes second reaction plays as being something different and something better. And I think Mahomes is a transcendent player in the sense that he can play in any system and be really good. But I think one player we have to talk about is Kelsey, Travis Kelsey. Yeah. Because I think they're going to align him.
Starting point is 01:12:54 up as the single receiver to the short side of the field with three wide receivers to the other side of the field. So he's sort of what we call the boundary X with trips to the other side. So look for Kelsey in that position. The 49ers are not a match-up defense. So even if they play man, they'll still be a corner on Kelsey. And Kelsey can beat corners. When you talk about the 49ers offense, and I think they're going to have a really good
Starting point is 01:13:18 day Sunday. I think we're just as the way Super Bowles work, Greg Kosell, 40 years NFL films, whatever the sweeping narrative is going into the game, McVeigh's offense and Tom Brady and they can't get a touchdown. The idea is it's going to be a track meet for Kansas City and we're going to get this sort of blue collar grounded out. This run game is what makes it so effective? Is it personnel where Shanahan? I mean, Kittle can block the tight ends of beast. Or is it simply, are they winning one-on-one battles?
Starting point is 01:13:54 or is it schematic? I say it's a combination of both, but to me it's more schematic. They run the full Monty of run game concepts. They're very multiple with their run game, and they'll get Samuel involved in the run game, and for them, that's not a gimmick. That's just building upon their base concept.
Starting point is 01:14:11 But it's funny, I was talking to Nick Hardwick, the former center for the Chargers, and one thing we were talking about, and he said it's so critical, is Kiddell's ability, and they're facing a 4-3. So Kittles' ability to block defensive ends one-on-one changes your entire run game for the better, because now you don't have to worry about that.
Starting point is 01:14:30 He can move defensive ends one-on-one, so that makes their run game so much better, and it opens up more options. Now, you've watched San Francisco a lot of it on film. Did anybody have, what could Kansas City do to stop the run game? Did you watch teams that had some success? I think Baltimore at times had some success against the Niners' run game. Well, ultimately, you have to commit to stopping the run game. with your fronts, and then you have to win some one-on-ones. And that's where I think Chris Jones
Starting point is 01:14:57 is a very important player in this game, because Chris Jones, who was hurt but did play in the championship game against Tennessee, Chris Jones is a great athlete for his size, and I think he's capable of winning one-on-one battles against the center garland and the right-guard person. And I think that's where they're going to have to have success. Jones being a critical player, but you're going to have to win some one-on-one matchups. Now, keep in mind, their linebackers this year, the Chiefs, that is, have struggled at times being a little too fast flow, getting out of their gaps. And if they start doing that against that outside zone run game, and Moster cuts back with that speed, that could present an issue.
Starting point is 01:15:34 Finally, Greg Kosell, 40 years NFL films, is there, and I know you hate these questions, but you've watched enough film, so you do get an understanding of tempo and personnel. I feel like the better roster is facing the best player in Mahomes. I like San Francisco, they have shown me over the course of a year, Greg, they can win multiple ways, shootouts, nine nothing in D.C. and sloppy weather. They play rain. They play wind. They're very multiple. Their looks. I like San Francisco. Most people like Kansas City, your thoughts. I like San Francisco as well, but I'll say this. I think there's a major burden on their secondary. They played a lot more man-to-man coverage down the stretch. I'm not sure they can do that in this game.
Starting point is 01:16:18 And one thing I think you will see, they've been a team that's played with five, defensive backs as there are a sub-backage. Who's that? I think they'll play with six defensive backs a lot in this game on third down. San Francisco. Yeah, but I like San Francisco to win the game. Yeah. You're usually pretty good at that stuff. I mean, your instincts are good.
Starting point is 01:16:35 Well, sometimes. Once in a while you're not an odds maker, but once in a while I get it right. All right. It's great seeing you. Thank you for the 10 for that little document you gave me. Folks, you did not see it. Many of the best things in life you don't see. They're under the radar, but it was
Starting point is 01:16:51 unbelievable. We love having you and we will talk very soon. Thanks, Colin. Appreciate it. Greg CoSell. And here is Joy Taylor with the news. No, no, no, no, turn on the news. This is the Herdline News. Sponsored by Liberty Mutual Insurance. Only pay for what you need. Craig, you made Collins Day with that list. He's so happy. So speculation is swirling that Tom Brady could be done in New England and he did not help kill any rumors with his most recent post. He tweeted a picture of himself. He also put it on Instagram standing in a tunnel of Gillette Stadium, but it's hard to tell if he's headed towards the field or if he's
Starting point is 01:17:31 walking away. This is a classic thirst trap. That's what this is. That's what this is. What they call it? It's a thirst trap. I'm making a joke. It's not a thirst trap. But for Tom Brady, it is because he knows exactly what he's doing. Now, maybe this is a Super Bowl ad that we don't know anything about. Oh, well, what time out? That's an interesting theory. Where did you get that? I spent a little time on the Internet. Maybe this is Super Bowl.
Starting point is 01:17:57 There's some conspiracy theories out there about what this could possibly be. Now, that would be a left turn. Right. I might just be an ad for something else, you know? Tom Brady is very sly and very calculated with this stuff. But either way, whether it is a Super Bowl ad or it's like a setup for, you know, some, you know, TB12 leather jacket line he has coming out or whatever it is that he's doing, he knows what he's doing.
Starting point is 01:18:19 He's Tom Brady. Yeah, he knows exactly what everyone is saying about him right now. He knows the situation in New England. And he picked this picture on purpose with the black and white. And it's very, it's hard. Yeah, I mean, this is not going. You know, it's funny. You know one thing I know about Brady and Russell Wilson.
Starting point is 01:18:37 And this just shows you, this is why Brady and Russell are so smart. They have teams of people around them. Like, for instance, before Russell comes on our show, his producers kind of scout out the geography here. what's the set like, where can Russell go? To your point, Tom's not just making this up on an afternoon and saying, guys, get in my suburban,
Starting point is 01:18:59 let's go shoot at the stadium. It does make me think he put so much thought into this. Of course he did. There's got to be some, he's got to deliver on this some way, right? Well, I mean, if he delivers by leaving New England, that's a whole different longer than we know what it was. Or if he stays and there's
Starting point is 01:19:15 no ad or anything associated with it, then, you know, he's just, he's just messing with everybody is what he's doing. He's doing a very good job because we're talking about it and so is the entire world. So the bond between Kyle Shanahan and Jimmy Garoppolo has been instrumental in getting the 49ers to the Super Bowl this year. And Shanahan credits Jimmy G's straightforward demeanor as one of the main things that makes him special. I mean, Jimmy's just fun because there's there's no there's no BS to Jimmy. You don't have to play any games with them. You don't have to sit there and tell him how much you care about him or anything. He knows I do. I mean, we're good. And he doesn't have to tell me anything like that either.
Starting point is 01:19:49 right. So we just live each day together. We go, I go coach them hard when I need to and I'm cool with them when I'm not and when I don't need to be. And every day is kind of the same. Oh, that's so, so important. It's such a subtle thing. But when you don't have to come in and tell someone they're great every single day or, you know, just before you give someone criticism, like tell them how nice their hair looks and, you know, how they smell good. And they're like, but also, you know, I just think maybe you should not throw that route because it's not, you know, not the best of that way. Maybe we're going to switch it up. Like, just talk.
Starting point is 01:20:25 Like, just have an open communication and be straightforward. That is huge, especially for when you're in a position where you need to give harsh critiques. Listen, I've said this before on the air, and this is not directed at anybody that is currently associated closely with me. I've dumped friends who are needy. Right. Needy is hard. Needy sucks the life out of you. So I don't have any needy friends right now.
Starting point is 01:20:49 So right now, and if I can't do needy, I got two dogs at home who I'm trying to just keep out of the bed every night because they want to sleep with me. And I got my beautiful wife and I got kids. I can't do needy. And it's same with quarterback. Yes. I don't want to have to. And I said this. I have struggled with Cam at some point.
Starting point is 01:21:06 I know somebody that's been in that building as a coach and has said there are times when there was, it was heavy. Garapolo's not heavy. Mahomes doesn't appear to be heavy. it's going to be one of the reasons they're both over the next 10 years going to win a lot of football games. Every second, I don't have kids, but every second of my day is accounted for. Like, we're just incredibly busy people. And they are incredibly busy people and they're trying to prep and trying to win a Super Bowl. It's not have to come into the room and then set the tone and make sure everybody feels good before starting to talk.
Starting point is 01:21:37 It's like, it's huge. So finally, the reserves for the NBA All-Star game of Ben announced in the east. It's Jimmy Butler, Ben Simmons, Kyle Lowry, Chris Middleton. DeMontas Sabonis, Jason Tatum, and Bam out of bio. And in the West, it's Nicola Yokic, Damian Lillard, Donovan Mitchell, Rudy Gobert, Chris Paul, Brandon Ingram, and Russell Westbrook. Let me tell you something. Six first time all-stars. The story of the roster.
Starting point is 01:22:04 Chris Paul could be one of the stories of the year. Yeah, you love that story. It's an incredible story. People bailed on Chris Paul. He had an injury. We thought he was just going to be traded right out of there. Oklahoma City is the shock of the league. I mean, everybody for years said Billy Donovan couldn't coach.
Starting point is 01:22:18 maybe some of the players he was with were harder to coach because Chris Paul and Stephen Adams, they could end up being a 500 basketball team. That is a huge. We thought it was a total rebuild. Right, a total rebuild. We didn't even know that Chris Paul was going to be there. First of all, do you know what I, Goulet, I need more than hockey scores.
Starting point is 01:22:37 Get me Oklahoma City's draft picks in the next three years. I think they have a dozen first round picks. So I get a healthy Chris Paul against Stephen Adams and I got a 500 teen and are going to get like four, five, six picks. You know, they're a blessed organization. They always seem to find themselves in it in a good spot. It's the first time the Spurs haven't had an All-Star since 1997.
Starting point is 01:22:58 And there's a little debate about some of the snubs, Paul George, Devin Booker, and Bradley Beale. By the way, Spurs, again, a lot like New England, not a lot of pro bowlers. You get a little, those dynasties get a little old, and you wake up one day and you're like, we don't have enough dynamic players. There's no All-Stars.
Starting point is 01:23:12 Yep. None for the Spurs. First time the Spurs haven't had an all-star since 1997. All right. Joy with the news. Well, that's the news. And thanks for stopping by. The Hurd-Lie News.
Starting point is 01:23:26 He's looking at me. What? Goulet. Goulet's like, well, this is a lot of pressure. I didn't know I was going to have an NBA question halfway through my Super Bowl Friday show. No, I'm just saying,
Starting point is 01:23:38 everybody thought this was a disaster for Oklahoma City. Like, it was man overboard. It's like, no, no, they could end up with a 500 team, get into the playoffs and have like nine first-round picks the next three years. That is a great story.
Starting point is 01:23:48 Hold on. They have their, yeah, there you go. All right, so OKC has their own in 2020. They'll be a lottery team and Denver's first round pick, which is a top 10 protected pick. So they're going to have two great young players on this roster. By the way, or they could couple those picks and eventually get another player. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:24:04 So I'm going to tell you something. That thing is you could have gotten into a six-year slow death. The abyss. They turned that thing around. Especially as much as you rely on free agency in the NBA. By the way, there was a story yesterday about Tua, the quarterback for Alabama, that got hurt. And now nobody's quite sure. His agent came out Lee Steinberg, and I'll probably
Starting point is 01:24:24 get Lee Steinberg and Tua on our show next week or possibly after. They talked about, you know, I'd like him to sit and not play. So I went and looked up this morning. I don't think it matters if Tua sits. I'd prefer all young quarterback sit. Lamar Jackson sat for about 10 weeks. Aaron Rogers sat for three years. Tom Brady sat for a year. But you've also had guys that have come in and played. I mean, Kyler Murray played this year, and I thought he grew in the middle of the season. I thought he was better at the end in the beginning. I thought it was fine. So I don't think there's, I mean, I think, you know, Mahomes waited a while, played week 17 year one. I would rather guys sit, but I think you can plan. It doesn't wreck them. But I went back and looked this
Starting point is 01:25:01 morning and I said the key to Tua, if you drop in the draft, you go to less dumb people. You'll go to better coaches and better owners and better GMs. I found the two quarterbacks, because I asked this earlier, the two quarterbacks in the history of the NFL that ended up being great Hall of Fame quarterbacks who never had what you'd call elite coaching. Kurt Warner and Warren Moon. And that is it. The key for Tua isn't if he plays or doesn't. Does he land in a stable organization with a really, really good head coach?
Starting point is 01:25:37 Can't wait for my next guest. He's the best corner in the league. A keep to leave told me this morning. He goes, he's the best player right now in the league at his position. Patriot Stefan Gilmore is coming up next as we're live in Miami. Folks, guys, sure a sway to win Valentine's. Starting point is 01:27:02 to bundle your home and auto insurance. Go to geico.com, get a quote, see how much you could save. Geico.com. It is easy. That is Miami. This is Super Bowl week. And somebody who spent a lot of his recent career in these games, Stefan Gilmore, who is now the best pure corner in the NFL. Akeeb Talib told me off air today.
Starting point is 01:27:23 So that's the best player playing corner in the league. Richard Sherman came out and said he, you should have won the defensive player of the year. Your, you've played Mahomes several times. His passer rating against you is 53.4%. So, Stefan, what is the secret to Mahomes, or is there one? I just think you have to play tight coverage in the first. the secondary and you have to trust your rush to get there.
Starting point is 01:27:49 If you give him a lot of time, he's hard to, he's hard to, it's hard to make, make plays on the ball with. He's, he can get outside the pocket and make plays. He has a strong arm. I remember a throw he made on me scrambling outside the pocket, 50 yards down the field on the run across his body. I remember that. He's tough to, he's tough to cover.
Starting point is 01:28:13 Now, is their offense, is the Chief's offense, sophisticated, or do they kind of line up and say stop us? They do a lot of motioning, a lot of things they does that make the defense keep thinking. They have a lot of speed, so you have to respect that, and they have a great quarterback. So they have a lot of areas on their team that you have to really focus on and trust your teammates to make plays. Now, they don't have much of a running game. You knew that. when you watch them on film before you have played them.
Starting point is 01:28:47 Yeah. Did you kind of know coming into a game, like this is what they're going to do. I mean, did you have a cent? They're not much, they're not very run-centric. Yeah, I think they run the ball, but it's in different ways. They do motions and hand it off to Tyreek Hill. So it's a different running game. But you kind of know what they're due, but they always have a little wrinkle in to throw you off guard.
Starting point is 01:29:10 and I think Andy Reed and the officer coordinator does a great job by breaking down defenses and exposing them. You are now, you were in Buffalo to start your career, then you went to New England, and you were very good there. You have become the best player, the best corner in the NFL. We all know Belichick's really smart, but you've got to be coachable. You're obviously coachable. You're the guy on the team that he pays big money to.
Starting point is 01:29:39 Did Bill teach you? things about football you didn't know? Yeah, he did. I mean, every since I've been in New England, I've gotten smarter as a football player. He's taught me how to, you know, undercut routes. He's taught me how to, you know, play different players different. So early in my career, I kind of just played off my athletic ability. And since I've been in New England, I got smarter, so it allowed me to play faster and make more plays. Do you watch a lot of film now? I watch a lot of film. It's probably not one pass that I haven't seen thrown. to the guy that I'm covering, so I watch a lot of film.
Starting point is 01:30:13 I ask all great corners this. Is there a receiver in the league? You'll probably don't want to answer this, who I would be surprised, but are there receivers who maybe not be pro-roll receivers, but they're tough for you to guard? But there are guys that have different angles, body types? For me, it was, I think Devante Adams.
Starting point is 01:30:34 Big. Green Bay was pretty good. He has good releases. He's tough to stay in front of. and he had Aaron Rogers to get him the ball. So he was pretty tough. Are Kansas City's wide receivers when you jam them? You're a physical corner.
Starting point is 01:30:50 Are they comfortable? Can you knock them off their routes? I think you can. You can get them off their routes. You can jam them and frustrate them. And you have to rely on, like I said, your defense-al-line to get to the quarterback. But it's only take one play for those guys.
Starting point is 01:31:07 They have so much speed. One play can get them 60 yards down. the field, so that's the thing you have to worry about. What do you run the 40 and like what is your speed? 4-4. We're in the 4-38 coming out, so. How fast is Tyreek Hill? He's fastest player I ever played against.
Starting point is 01:31:24 He's probably 4-2. He's so fast. So he's the first guy in your life, Stefan? Yeah. That you're running full speed and he's pulling away. Yeah. He's the first guy that if he get in front of you one step, it's probably a touchdown.
Starting point is 01:31:39 You know, not too many guys can run away from me like that, but I feel like if he's get one step in front of me, it's a touchdown. Are super, but you've played in so many big games. Let's now talk about coming into this game. Stefan, you've done it multiple times. Go back to your first Super Bowl. Is it a little jarring? Is it a lot to, is it overwhelming at all? I think the first, my first Super Bowl, me being in Buffalo, I didn't go to the playoffs five years and then I go to New England.
Starting point is 01:32:09 our first year and go to the Super Bowl. And it was tough. It was still football, but a lot went on to it with the media, with the hype and the game. But I think the second year, I was more used to it. And, you know, I played better in the second year. So I just think it's still football, but it's definitely an adjustment. When you, like last year, for instance,
Starting point is 01:32:34 you were very good, you had a great Super Bowl. The half times longer. The timeouts are longer. Do you have to be more focused, especially against the Mahomes? Yeah. And Jimmy Garapolo, did you find in the Super Bowl it's easier to get distracted because the length of halftime, the length of timeouts? I don't think so because Bill does a great job of explaining that to you,
Starting point is 01:32:56 explaining like you have to stay warm at halftime because it's going to be longer. So, I mean, he's been to a lot, so he knows what they expect. So I think we was prepared each and every game in the Super Bowl. Von Gilmore Best Corner, Richard Sherman says, should be the defensive player of the year. You're a great player, but New England is also the ultimate system. Do you feel like sometimes, listen, I'd be much more celebrated with more commercials, you know, as a cowboy. But you are in such an incredible system. We don't talk about the individuals much.
Starting point is 01:33:30 Have you ever felt that in New England? You sacrificed a little? I don't think so because, you know, coming for where I came from, I feel like in New England you make a play, everybody talks about it because you're on a big stage. So when you're making plays in New England, that's all you have to do to get individual attention. So I don't look at it that way.
Starting point is 01:33:53 I just try to focus on my job and making plays each and every week. And I feel like that will take care of for herself. So Tom Brady was on Instagram yesterday. Now, Joy says, you know, Instagram, she's better on Instagram than I am. But she said that she thinks the Tom Brady thing could eventually be a commercial. He came out on Instagram. We can't tell if he's walking into the stadium or it's a message that I'm leaving New England. Just take me into on the average work week in New England.
Starting point is 01:34:21 Is Belichick tough on Tom? He's tough on everybody. You know, he's tough on him. He's tough on me. But I feel like that's what makes him a great coach. You know, he get the best out of every player consistently every week. He treat everybody the same. So that's the thing that I respect about him,
Starting point is 01:34:39 and that's the reason why I think he's a great coach. Do you think Tom will stay? I think he would do what's best, you know, for himself. And I think the team would do what's best for them. Players change every year. Obviously, he played 20 years in New England. You know, I can't see him in another jersey. But I think ultimately everybody will make the best decision for themselves.
Starting point is 01:35:04 How long have you been in the league, eight years, nine? Eight. I'm going on nine this year. Could you imagine playing 20 years? Yeah. That's a long time. It is unbelievable. So you say Belichick's actually barked at you a few times? He'll call you out? Oh, yeah, for sure. He has a couple times. He does.
Starting point is 01:35:24 But when he does it, you know, he's doing it for a reason, you know. And if you take a step back and look at it, you learn a lot from it. And you probably won't make that mistake again. So when you watch this game, you face Patrick Mahomes three different times, and you've had great success with him. In fact, if I looked at the numbers this morning, he doesn't throw much to you. He'd rather throw away. So, I mean, Patrick's figured out, Andy Reid told him, stay away from Stefan Gilmore. When you look at this team, they've never played a playoff game away from Arrowhead.
Starting point is 01:35:58 So they've only played. So that's kind of something because the Super Bowl, as you know, the crowd's different. it's all it's kind of corporate it's not it's kind of a weird game right's true yeah so so your gut feeling on who wins Sunday your gut feeling if I had to pick I would um I just think Pat Mahomes is probably the best quarterback I've played against and I feel like he has that you know that killer instinct in him and I feel like he can lead his team to win but you never know it's you know San Francisco got a great defense you know they can get to them. They got a Sherman. They have talent. So it's going to be a good game.
Starting point is 01:36:40 It's great meeting you, continued success. The best corner in the NFL is Defon Gilmore. Many more years to come, hopefully for you Patriot fans, it's in a, it's in that silver and blue jersey. Great meeting you, man. Thank you. Appreciate it. Folks, go to m drive for n.com. Just take a few shots here, if we could, of Miami. I remember the first time I came to a Super Bowl,
Starting point is 01:41:44 I was at a small table, a pen, a paper, and a headset, a radio headset. Joy Taylor and I are surrounded by palm trees on the beach. I have no idea how much this cost. It's the most beautiful set slash Super Bowl compound I've ever seen. It's literally unbelievable. They did an amazing job. The first Super Bowl I ever did was in New York, and I actually interviewed you.
Starting point is 01:42:09 And it was very similar. It was a table headset, and I was doing a Zazlo and Joy show here in Miami. They took us up there. Was I nice? We talk about it all the time, me and Zaz, that you were very, very nice.
Starting point is 01:42:21 Oh, that's nice. Yes. Yeah, because I'm not always nice. You were running around with a star. There's a lot going to be very nice within 10 minutes. There's a lot going on behind us. There is a lot going on. But we love Miami.
Starting point is 01:42:31 Thank you so much. They've treated us so well down here. So as I've said, I said an hour ago, I like San Francisco in this game. I think Kansas City can win the game. I'm not going to be shocked. Go ahead, race to Twitter if they win. Wouldn't be surprised at all. I tend to like, I just tend to like teams that can win multiple ways.
Starting point is 01:42:47 I thought, by the way, that's one of the reasons I thought New England this year was a very limited football team. I said this throughout the course of the year. New England really couldn't beat you multiple ways. They got no cheap touchdowns. I mean, New England had to score on nine and 13 play drives. San Francisco can power run it. They can use their tight ends. They can go over the top.
Starting point is 01:43:07 There's just so many different ways. They can win with defense. They can win in rainstorms. They can win ugly. They can win low scoring. They can win in wild shootouts. They can win with injured players. San Francisco, to me, is really, really poised for a long run in this league.
Starting point is 01:43:22 It's why I said earlier today that if you told me over the next 10 years, who are the four or five quarterbacks who are going to be in the playoffs, it's going to be Jimmy Garoppolo. If you're a sports better, this is a good, this is a good bar bet. Garapolo is going to win a Super Bowl. It may not be this Sunday. It may not be. He's going to win one. We talk about what you inherit in this league. He inherited a great coach, a smart defensive coordinator, a non-crazy owner, a Stanford educated John Lynch, general manager. Most of his young talent on the defensive side of the football in the front seven is very young. Their secondary is good, not great.
Starting point is 01:44:01 able to mask a lot of their problems in San Francisco because of the fierce pass rush. 55 sacks, 57 sacks on the year. Any team that's had 55 sacks coming into a Super Bowl has won all six. That's why I like San Francisco. I also think, and it's fairly obvious, Patrick Mahomes will be in this game over the next 10 years. He inherits the Hunt family's fantastic. Brett Beach is one of the really shrewd GMs. Andy reads an offensive genius. Some of his players are young, some are old. They're going to have to at some point not be able to have Sammy Watkins as their number four receiver. He's going to sign a contract here. They'll still be very talented. There's a lot of ways to manipulate the cap. Seattle did a great job this year
Starting point is 01:44:49 when they paid Russell Wilson, that big contract right before the draft. And Seattle's like, we have four draft picks, and we're paying our quarterback 35 large. By the draft, they had 11 picks. You can manipulate it. You can find an older player. The thing about the NFL, you'll always get a second chance. A.B. got like a third, maybe a fourth. It may be over for him. By and large, you get a second and third chance, but I like teams that have the ability to beat you one, two, three, or four different ways. I kind of feel with Kansas City, they're a track meet. You get a little pressure on them. They're kind of one-dimensional at times. That's good enough to come from behind and win. I'm not saying it's not possible, but for me, I can see a very sophisticated ground game
Starting point is 01:45:39 augmented by a very good passing game. I thought Greg CoSell an hour ago had a great line. He goes, San Francisco does not have to establish a running game. It's been established. It's great. They can go right to the air. So I'll take San Francisco winning this game by about a touchdown. Also something today on our network, Baker Mayfield stopped by first things first. Now, in sports, I've said before, I'm really not into being right. I'm into getting it right. I would always rather be right when I watch games having made a big prediction. I would rather be right. But what I really always hope to is get it right. Today, Baker Mayfield, who is in his entire NFL career baker mayfield's been a want to be right guy today he finally turned
Starting point is 01:46:32 the page today on first things first he was a i want to get it right guy instead of being glib and flip and having the funny answer he acknowledged today he is the leader got to be a little political I thought he was very measured today on first things first. How do you get back to me in the Baker Mayfield that you've been every step of your career aside from this past season? What do you need to do? Focus on the things that I can control. Work on my game. Work on getting better as a quarterback as a leader.
Starting point is 01:47:07 Getting around my guys, whatever happens to our team, our roster, you know, getting around those guys very early on to where we feel like a unified group. And just getting better, you know, like I said, on my own stuff. Not turning the ball over, taking care of that. I can't handle that stuff until season comes around. But I can work on scheme-wise learning this new playbook with our new staff and getting into that, diving into it to where when we report in April, it's go time. I'm excited about this new staff and where everything's headed. It's a new energy for us.
Starting point is 01:47:37 We got a young group. We had a young group last year, but I'm excited where it's headed. Measured, mature, acknowledges. I'm going to worry about stuff I can control. It's the new Baker. not, I'm going to be right guy. He sounded like, I'm going to get it right guy. Root in for him, really am. Michael Strand, the Hall of Fame are coming up next. Hiring is a challenge in any industry. One place you can go where hiring is simpler and faster and smart. And growing
Starting point is 01:48:08 businesses connect to qualified candidates fast. ZipRecruiter. Cafe Altura's CEO Dylan Miskowitz was trying to find a director of coffee for his organic coffee company. Couldn't find it a couple of months. Two, three went by. Then he switched to ZipRecruiter. Saw an immediate difference. ZipRecruiter doesn't depend on candidates finding you. It finds them for you and invites them to apply to your job. So you get a qualified candidate faster. In fact, four out of five employers who post a job on Zip Recruiter get a quality candidate within the first day. They've got a new director of coffee, by the way. Took them two days.

Starting point is 01:49:16 Super Bowl week. Thanks to everybody who stopped by this week. Tommyjohn.com. Code heard, 20% off your first order. Their lounge wear is great. Speaking of that clothing line, MSX by Michael Strayhan for the NFL's, good as well.
Starting point is 01:49:28 Got some of his warm-up stuff in my house, wear it often. Miami Beach, so Michael Strayan's not only a Hall of Famer. I remember covering the game in Arizona with you and the Giants. So it's a weird story. I lived in Connecticut.
Starting point is 01:49:41 This is, by the way, brought to you by Mercedes, best or nothing. And you played the Patriots. it's week 17, good game in the medal lands, good, tough game, lost, and then all of a sudden a month later, you shocked the world. Just go back to the two weeks previous to the Super Bowl. They're undefeated. I mean, you guys were barely in the game. Nobody talked about you. How much of Week 17 helped in the Super Bowl? If it weren't for Week 17, we never would have, we wouldn't have made the Super Bowl.
Starting point is 01:50:13 And if we had, I don't think we would have beat the Patriots. Playing them in Week 17 was weird because we knew we were in the playoffs. So the coaches, they don't put much in the game plan. They don't want to show anybody else what you're going to do. So that was the last game of the regular season. The question was, do we sit or do we play? And Coughlin, of course, Tom Coughlin, you're going to play, son. You're not going to sit here and put the backups in.
Starting point is 01:50:38 And we were getting after them. We were really getting after them. we almost beat them in that game to end the perfect season. Your defensive front was given their O-line issues. Yeah, and we thought, okay, O.C. said to me after the game, when we see them again, we're going to beat them. And I'm thinking, well, the only way we see them again is in the Super Bowl, and I don't know.
Starting point is 01:51:01 I don't know if this is the team that's got to get through everybody to get there. I mean, I've been on some teams I felt possibly were better, had better play in certain positions, but it was something. We were really a team. But when he said that I was like, hmm, okay, at least he's confident. And every week we just started marching in the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. And then the Dallas Cowboys were strong. I'm really worried about the Cowboys.
Starting point is 01:51:25 And then we went in and we beat Green Bay. And the two weeks leading up to the Super Bowl, it was weird because Coach Cawfler had myself, Amani Toomer, and Gray Rugamer, who's a long snapper with the Patriots when they won, talked to the team. Now, Moni and I, we were on a losing Super Bowl team. We were playing against, you know, Baltimore Raven 2001. But our conversation were all very similar. Enjoy the week.
Starting point is 01:51:48 Like, enjoy it. It's fun. Don't get so bogged down that it's the Super Bowl. And don't get in a situation where, you know, once they kick off the ball, it's just football. You can overthink this so much. And you can be stiff and, like, overwhelmed with all the emotion. And I think that's what happened in 2001.
Starting point is 01:52:08 So we're at practice in Arizona. Coach Coughlin have an in-and-out burger truck pull up, and that is so not him at that, you know, and so he's after eating in-and-out, burger got ketchup running up on his t-shirt, running down his cheek and everything else. But just to see him like that and see how everybody was so relaxed
Starting point is 01:52:27 after telling them too relaxed, actually scared me. I said, we're too relaxed. Let me ask you, was Tom, before you took the field, because I remember watching that game, and I'm watching it with friends, and the first series, I think they try to reverse or something.
Starting point is 01:52:44 And my friend said, New York's winning all the individual battles up front, all of them. Yeah. And that's really, as you know, the way to be the great team is disrupt the offensive line. The best past defense is a past rush. Did you know early, did you come to the sidelines, Michael, first or second series, and look at OSCE and like, we're, this is different. Well, what was crazy, we were hitting Brady so much the first few series. that I personally thought it was a joke.
Starting point is 01:53:11 I thought they were trying to trick us. Like, I don't know who's going to set the quarterback to take shots to trick the other team, but we're getting to him so often. If you're not there, then Ossie's there. If we're not there, then Tucket there. We're not there. Fred Robbins is there. And we're in, Akivika Mitchell, like, everybody is hitting him. And it's like, how are we getting there so easy?
Starting point is 01:53:30 It's not, it doesn't even feel like we're really working, and we have just started out. We're not even in our groove yet. And once we started doing that, and now you saw Brady get mad, Tom, slamming the ball. He's screaming. as guys, you go, oh, we got them. Like, this is not time.
Starting point is 01:53:45 They're frustrated. They're frustrated. He's frustrated. I love you, too, ladies. The ladies love Michael. Oh, man. You know, usually it's the mothers and the grandkids. And, you know, take the individual right now.
Starting point is 01:54:00 But it is so crazy that we were hitting so often, the frustration that came about. And it just built our confidence. It just built our confidence. I remember Plexico posted something on Instagram today, the clip of when he said, we're going to beat them 17 to 21 or something. And Tom Brady says, oh, you're only going to score 17. Okay, he doesn't play defense.
Starting point is 01:54:26 I remember that. And I retweeted it. And I love Tom's. My boy, that's my business partner in religion of sports business that we do. But I text back to commented on Placico said, you missed it. You gave them three extra points. Because we were just barnstorming, man. We were coming.
Starting point is 01:54:42 It was unbelievable. Now, late in that game, Michael, it's a difference between sealing a regular season game in the Super Bowl. You're not a nervous player. You were big and big games. But you look up at that clock two minutes to go. Was the heart beating a little faster for your first Super Bowl win? End of that game trying to hold on to that thing. Oh, heck, yeah.
Starting point is 01:55:02 You're on the field and they had one more drive, and you're thinking, the Patriots always seem to win. They always seem to come up with a way. And Brady threw a heck of a ball that Randy Moss almost caught. Yep. So you're just like, okay, if you have anything left in your tank, I've never been as exhausted ever. And then football game than I was at the end of that one.
Starting point is 01:55:26 When they said leaving on the field, I left it. I had nothing else to give. And just watching the guys go out there and just handle business and finish it up was amazing because this is the most unlikely Super Bowl win. That team was stacked. That team would beat everybody and score 40 points a game. And here we are, a bunch of vagabonds, a bunch of gypsies rolling the town with a caravan. I felt like we were out there just raggedy everything uniforms.
Starting point is 01:55:51 And we beat a team that was seen as one of the greatest teams of all time. Do you see any similarities between the Niners defense and yours? Absolutely. Being at the NFC championship game a few weeks ago, watching those guys come off the ball across the board, is a thing of beauty if you like watching the defensive lineman play. These guys go added 100% every single play. So it's different in person than on TV?
Starting point is 01:56:19 I thought it was different in person than on TV. And I saw Bosa before the game, and I told him, I said, hey, you know, it's really amazing to watch you play because you play, which the way I believe you should play anything you do. But every play is if it's your last. You never know.
Starting point is 01:56:33 Every play is important. You come off that ball. of every play is your last play. And he plays like that, that D-Line plays like that. And you can tell they're like we are. They're in competition with each other. Now, don't, you know, I love OSEA, I love tucking all these guys, but one of them got a sack.
Starting point is 01:56:49 We were like, we would applaud and high-five you, but in our heads were like, oh, I got to get one now. You know, we didn't just say, okay, he's got a sack. We're good. No, no, no. You do it. I got to do it better. And that's the competition that seems like they have when they play.
Starting point is 01:57:03 And that's why all of them get after the quarter. and they have a rotation. So if you're an offensive lineman in, you're watching film on these guys, you know, you better get your sleep. Do you know early in games? I mean, you can make adjustments. How long does it take Michael for you to know,
Starting point is 01:57:20 for a Nick Bosa to know he can't block me? I mean, you've been in a lot of games. Oh, man. Sometimes pretty fast, sometimes not so it takes a while. Sometimes you're like this is going to be a battle on the entire game. But the eyes don't lie, Colin. When it comes to dating, the eyes don't lie.
Starting point is 01:57:38 You're married. You looked at your wife, and you knew if she liked you or not from the first second, you looked at her. I knew it. The eyes don't lie. She probably didn't know. My eyes didn't lie. Mine didn't lie.
Starting point is 01:57:48 Your eyes didn't lie. Her eyes were confused. She didn't know what to make her made. But it's the same thing in football. When you were out there, man on man, and you're going after this guy, and you're just both the physicalness of it, and you're looking at a guy, and you can tell in his eyes, does he want to be here right now? Really?
Starting point is 01:58:05 Are his hands full and he's realizing? Can't hide. You cannot hide it in your eyes. And if you pay close attention as a player, my whole thing was I'm just going to try to beat it out of you. I'm just going to be more physical. I'm going to run all day. I'm going to give you more than you can handle.
Starting point is 01:58:23 We may not win the game, but you're going to respect me at the end of it. And there's nothing better. I must admit, then when you're going against a guy, you look in his face and you realize, oh, he does not want to be here. His hands are full. I'm going to have a lot of fun today. I call it the octagon test. You watch those UFC fight sometimes, and you're like,
Starting point is 01:58:40 they don't want to be there. The first time in their life, they were the tough kid in high school. They met their match. Connor McGregor. They just don't want to be in the ring with him. And everybody has somebody who can beat him. I mean, that's the thing. And a lot of times, the person who handles you may not be a guy who everyone in the league knows or goes, oh, man, that guy.
Starting point is 01:58:58 Who gave you most trouble? Oh, man. The most trouble I got. Walter Jones, you ever play him? No, Leon Searcy. Really? Leon Searcy and, and, and, um, because Leon Searcy was, was shorter than I was. He was just stout. He had the hands of stone.
Starting point is 01:59:18 You hated him. And he was, he was one of those guys. You looked at his eye and you're like, oh, oh, he's not going anywhere all day long. And Eric Williams with the cowboy, the other one. He wasn't as strong as Leon, but Eric was a competitor. He had a nastiness about him that no one else had. And I know I had all these battles with John Runyon, but he was another guy. He was a heck of a competitor, man. And my last year playing against when I knew I was going to retire before that, even before the Super Bowl had me gone or not.
Starting point is 01:59:48 And just going against John, after that last year, I was tired. Like, I've done this enough. This is, I'm done fooling with you. By the way, you lost, you were a bigger player and you're a smart guy. So like most smart linemen, you lost weight. You look fantastic. Thank you, sir. When you look at old pictures of you.
Starting point is 02:00:05 What do you see? I know why you're bringing this up. Because Joy says she had a picture when I was at the provo and she was with her with Jason back in the day. What did you look like? Okay, Colin, I looked probably like I was sucking on an air tube for about two months. It's not the best picture you've ever taken.
Starting point is 02:00:25 That's why I've never posted it. It's a great throwback Thursday. You should be proud. Okay, my head with about three times the size it is right now. I mean, it's probably 15 years ago. I hadn't worn off the baby fat yet. That's right. Yeah, I still had the baby fat in my 30s.
Starting point is 02:00:43 And look at you now, Flair. Yeah, baby. Hey, good luck Sunday. Hey, thank you, man. I appreciate you having me on. Y'all, you two are always fun. I appreciate it. And post a picture.
Starting point is 02:00:56 Go ahead. Let everybody see. Let the world see. Don't, you might regret it, but if you say so. I want to see it myself. Post it. Michael Strayan Hall of Famer. Thanks, buddy.
Starting point is 02:01:07 Here's Joy with the news. No, no, no, no. Turn on the news. This is the herd line news. I'm going to find it. It's something. So Greg Olson, he was on the show this week. He and the Panthers have decided to part ways.
Starting point is 02:01:21 He spent the last nine seasons with the team. He is third in franchise history in receiving yards and the Panthers, all-time leader and catches in receiving yards for a tight ends. He is a three-time pro bowler. He's played 13 seasons, nine with the Panthers. and forward the Bears. He is represented by Drew Rosenhouse and he said that Olson is still interested
Starting point is 02:01:39 in playing football and will be in communication with teams after the Super Bowl. I spend about 20 minutes with him, maybe 15 minutes the other night at a Fox party, and we talked about this, and he said, listen, he goes, I may get cut, I'm totally okay with it.
Starting point is 02:01:54 And I said, broadcasting her football, and he said, listen, they're both going to be fun. He goes, but the right spot, he goes, I don't want to rebuild, but he goes, I love the game. So if he gets a quality team, Greg loves, he told us his dear day. He loves practice. He loves the process.
Starting point is 02:02:12 And that's really a big deal because a lot of guys like the money in the games. Greg's like, I like the practice. Well, he's just such a cerebral player and I guess just a savvy veteran. So it makes sense that he wouldn't want to go to a rebuild situation, which obviously the Panthers are at this point. They completely separate Cam Newton, obviously moved on from a lot of people. So he would be an asset to a team. that is right there that needs some veteran leadership or stability, something like that.
Starting point is 02:02:39 And if he wants to keep playing, as we know, that career is eventually going to end and you can be a broadcaster for the next 30 years if he wants to. So get as much as you can out of the game right now if he's healthy and obviously wants to do that, but he's not going to be doing that with the Panthers. So Baker Mayfield went through a sophomore slump last season. He joined First Things First this morning to talk about how he's looking to turn things around. How do you get back to me in the Baker Mayfield that you've been every step of your career aside from this past season? What do you need to do?
Starting point is 02:03:09 Focus on the things that I can control. Work on my game. Work on getting better as a quarterback as a leader. Getting around my guys, whatever happens to our team, our roster, you know, getting around those guys very early on to where we feel like a unified group. And just getting better, you know, like I said, on my own stuff. Not turning the ball over, taking care of that. I can't handle that stuff until season comes around. but I can work on scheme-wise learning this new playbook with our new staff
Starting point is 02:03:33 and getting into that, diving into it to where when we report in April, it's go time. I'm excited about this new staff and where everything's headed. You know, it's a new energy for us. We got a young group. We had a young group last year, but I'm excited where it's headed. I thought Baker did a great job in first thing, first thing. I thought he was fantastic. I thought he was absolutely fantastic.
Starting point is 02:03:54 He took every question that they had, and they did drill him a little bit, asking some tough stuff. No, I think Nick Wright did a nice job. Nick's like, hey, man, you know, I support you, but you, sometimes you, what's the old saying? Your mouth is writing checks that something else can't cash or something. Maybe it's the opposite. Choppy, but yes, basically that's it. But I think he did a good job. I don't really know how relevant the Browns are going to be next year because that division is going to be different.
Starting point is 02:04:21 You're going to have Burrow, which we're all going to be paying attention to in Cincinnati. Obviously, we know what the Ravens are with Lamar Jackson. I don't know what's going to happen with Ben Rathesberger, but the Steelers are always competitive. That's a tough division. I don't, I don't really know that we're going, it's going to have the same feel in Cleveland. Yeah, I really do, though. I will say this.
Starting point is 02:04:38 I believe Baker Mayfield is going to have a bounce back year, and I think they'll be in the thick of things, which is what I said this year, and they were disappointing. I think the division's tougher. Joe Burrell's coming in, but I think Cleveland hired a smart head coach, and I'm for smart over loud,
Starting point is 02:04:54 and I thought they were loud last year. I think Cleveland will be smarter this year. A loud GM left. I thought Baker was loud. My prediction is there'll be a better team with a better record, but I don't know what that guarantees in that division. But you say they were disappointing. What do you always say?
Starting point is 02:05:10 Expectations create disappointment. The expectations for the Browns were completely unrealistic and ridiculous. Now they're not. Now everybody's like 7 to 9, 8, and 8. Now I think, again, noise works in a lot of sports. It just doesn't in football. We got like a million examples. Get less noisy.
Starting point is 02:05:26 And I thought Baker today symbolized what they'll say. sound and look like going forward. I thought he did a great job. Finally, Patrick Mahomes said this week that he ended up in the perfect place in hopes to spend his entire career in Kansas City and his head coach Andy Reed thinks Mahomes should be giving former teammate Alex Smith a lot of credit for his early success. Showed him out to be a pro. So how you study your diet, your workout plan, you know, family, how you work your family
Starting point is 02:05:57 into the national football league. been a great player in the national football league. So, you know, I joke about it, but it's true that Patrick couldn't pay Alex enough for what he gave him with that experience. It's very true. It's priceless, the experience that he had working behind Alex Smith and learning how to be a pro. And obviously, his father was a professional athlete, so it's not that he was completely foreign to what that experience is like, but being able to come up behind.
Starting point is 02:06:29 a pro like Alex Smith and learned how do we get to practice, like what time to get to practice, what is like in the film room, all these little things set you up for success. And at the quarterback position, you don't always get that situation because at every other position they're going to have multiple veterans likely who are there who are going to bring you up to show you what to do because for the betterment of the team, when you're a quarterback, you're coming in and expected to be that guy. I think Kansas City will win this game. Obviously, I'm with you.
Starting point is 02:06:53 It can go either way. It's such a evenly balanced team, lots of stars, no villain. City to win in cover. It's a favor by two right now. By the way, if Kansas City wins, I'm going to be the happiest guy that ever picked the wrong team because Andy Reed is the classiest, nicest coach in the league. I will be very happy for Kansas City, though, as well. I'm not, I mean, both of these teams have great fan bases, but to bring a Super Bowl to Kansas City. Right in the middle of the country. Yeah, that, the whole city is going to be shut down for a week there. That's a parade. You're not going to miss. Good stuff. Joy with the news.
Starting point is 02:07:26 Well, that's the news. And thanks for stopping by. Third line news. Michelin Durrance X-D silicone wiper blades, real world proven. Get them at Walmart last two times longer than other blades. All right, let's bring on J-Mac, Jason McIntyre, created the big lead. Now he's at Fox Sports and FS1. Can we bring you want to bring him on right now? Yeah, bring him on.
Starting point is 02:07:46 Jason McIntyre coming on the show tomorrow's headlines today. It's great to see you. Jason McIntyre. All right, so this is great. You like the whole gambling aspect. You're into this stuff. Kind of like gambling, just a little bit. So the line initially came out, and the line was initially, I think it was San Francisco
Starting point is 02:08:04 plus one and a half or two. I jumped on it with a little lettuce, not much. I don't think it's a great bet. In your eyes, is there a prop bet or some part of this game you think is a great bet? I'm on the 49ers here. I think that's definitely the side, Colin. You know, the public's going to come in heavily on the Chiefs. They've covered eight in a row, best record against the spread.
Starting point is 02:08:24 They have the best player in the Super Bowl. I just like the 49ers here. We've seen defense trump offense many times in the last few years. Cam Newton, remember, came in, number one offense. They got skunked by Von Miller. Okay, we saw Jared Goff last year, number two offense in the league, struggled mightily. And then you go back to Peyton Manning, 55 touchdown passes. And then in the Super Bowl, they get stomped by Seattle.
Starting point is 02:08:46 So defense historically has trumped offense. I'm with the Niners here. Now, if you're looking for a prop bet, I like George Kittle a lot. I actually like his backup, Blake Bell, to do some damage at tight end. but I just think a low-scoring game, I'm looking at 21-20 along those lines, 49ers and a close one. You know, it's interesting.
Starting point is 02:09:04 San Francisco has 57 sacks. Any team with 55 or more is sick to know in the Super Bowl. That's a great stat. Yeah, I mean, I will say this. Tennessee is a really good team. What was their weakness? They had no pass rush. And the secondary was terrible.
Starting point is 02:09:19 Yeah, so you go from no pass rush in Tennessee. Then you have Houston. You fall behind, you come back, kind of a dysfunctional operation. You're talking about a highly functional blizzard of a pass rush. Mahomes could have a great day. He will be, there were times against Tennessee.
Starting point is 02:09:37 He was patting the ball. He had six and seven seconds. The bottom line is Mahomes will throw under duress regularly. Doesn't mean he'll lose or throw picks. It will be a different type of game for Patrick Mahomes. Here's a great stat for you. So Mahomes never faced a team this year that was top five in sacks or top five adjusted sack rate.
Starting point is 02:09:58 He's faced a lot of bad defenses. 49ers are elite getting to the quarterback, and they don't need to blitz. We know Mahomes is great under pressure, right? He's a master in the pocket. He's got the fast receivers. But Colin, I keep coming back to this stat. The 49ers have four first round picks on the defensive line. Led, of course, by Bosa.
Starting point is 02:10:15 I think this defense dominates the game and wins in the trenches. I like the Niners. All right, tomorrow's headlines today. We do this every Friday. Very popular segment. Take it away. All right, Colin. So I said I do like the Niners.
Starting point is 02:10:30 What will the headline be Monday? It will be Mahomes Racker. I think the defensive line dominates. Bosa, 12 sacks, 90 pressures this year. Wow. And Armistead, very good. We talked about this during the week. Pro football focus ranked the top 53 players in the Super Bowl.
Starting point is 02:10:49 Of the top 24, 18 were on the 49ers. It was amazing. the first 12 were split, and then the next 12 were all... Now, it will be interesting next year. Can they afford Jimmy Ward? They're mostly young. They may lose a couple of players,
Starting point is 02:11:06 but San Francisco's built for the long haul here. I do love Mahomes, okay? There's a great quarterback, a lot to like about him, but I just think under this pressure with an extra week to prepare for Robert Sala, who everybody I've talked to this week says, this guy's going to be a head coach soon. He's been phenomenal.
Starting point is 02:11:20 I just think they get to Mahomes a lot. Do you have another headline tomorrow? I do have an MVP. Here we go. Are you ready for this one? So the MVP, everybody's got their money on my homes. I think that's silly. I'm going to go with the headline will be for the MVP award, Super Bowl 54.
Starting point is 02:11:36 Bosa with the Mosa. Yeah. Nick Bosa, baby. I see a lot of 49ers fans out here fired up. This is a guy who's really dominated. He's got three sacks in the playoffs alone. There's a rookie who's come in high impact immediately. They're going to have to double him.
Starting point is 02:11:52 If you have to keep Kelsey in to block, it takes away one of the best tight ends in the game. I think Nick Bosa has a dominant performance. A sleeper would be Richard Sherman. Okay? I just don't see Tyree Kill having the time to get open with Richard Sherman back there. Jason McIntyre, it's going to be great to have you on next week. Thank you for coming to the Super Bowl, Fox Sports, FS1, Fox Sports Radio. What's the gambling thing you're doing?
Starting point is 02:12:16 I do a lot of gambling videos for Fox Sports. Very profitable NFL season. College football, not so much. but we're going to be doing some NBA stuff as well coming up. Good seeing you, buddy. Great seeing you. Jay Mack. Coming up, Taysam Hill of the New Orleans Saints, one of the great athletes in the NFL.
Starting point is 02:12:30 He's the next St. Quarterback, according to sources there, if Drew Breeze leaves, and he'll make that decision soon. Demi Lovato, DJ Khalid, Yolanda Adams, Dan and Shea, and Pitfall, and that's all before kickoff. Don't mix the Fox Super Bowl pregame show. And Terry Bradshaw is guaranteeing a $250,000 jackpot for the Super 6 Super Bowl contest. One of the questions is which team will win in by how many points. Colin, who do you like? San Francisco 36, 28, something like that. Close. I'll take the Niners. I think their defense is special and he'll rush Patrick Holmes in a mistake. Taysam Hill. We've just found out.
Starting point is 02:17:54 During the break, we have a lot in common. A remarkable young player, TASM, three years out of BYU in the NFL, you're the next quarterback for the New Orleans Saints. 20 years ago, this league would never have given you a shot. Do you believe you were born at the right time and you came to the right place? Absolutely. You know, I think, look, I've always been a fan of, like, Lamar Jackson and seeing these guys in college, but I pay closer attention now, you know, and to see Lamar have the season that he did,
Starting point is 02:18:23 I think Patrick Gahombs has changed things with his ability to make plays happen. Like, you know, that has been a really big thing for me. And, you know, being in New Orleans with Coach Payton, I don't know that anyone else would have been as creative with me as he has been. And, you know, it's really been a perfect, you know, situation for me. You had in one year over 100 passing yards, rushing yards, and receiving yards. It's never been done. Only NFL player to do that. You face the 49ers defense.
Starting point is 02:18:53 It looks different. You've been hit by it. Talk about in some detail, Taysam, when you prepared for them. Is there a little weakness? Are there things you have to avoid against the 49ers defense? Well, absolutely. You know, I think that front seven is as good a front seven in football, you know, or frankly, that I've played in my time, you know, in the NFL.
Starting point is 02:19:18 I think if you look at that game of ours, I think a lot of that is, you know, goes to Coach Peyton and his creativity, but we had a really good offensive game. You really did. Against those guys. And I think we paid really close, you know, attention to detail and how we protect every single play. You know, we had a very specific game plan of like, hey, I'm going to call this play at this time so we can chip both ends at the same time. And there was a plan in place to make sure that, you know, Bosa was getting chipped on every single play. So he wasn't in the backfield. I was going to say you guys
Starting point is 02:19:54 back actually both teams it was a wild shootout. Mahomes, no, Breeze is not a mover. I mean, he's athletic, but he's not a runner. Mahomes is. They did struggle with Russell Wilson, Kyler Murray. You know, I know you've watched Mahomes on TV. Do you think it's an advantage facing the Niners with a mobile quarterback?
Starting point is 02:20:13 Yeah, I think so. You know, I think as a defensive rush, I haven't been in their shoes. But if you know there's a threat that a guy's going to escape and leave the pocket, I think it's more difficult for you to just pin your ears back and rush. I think it's a little more too gap, you know, as a defensive end or defensive tackle to make sure that you contain that guy. And so I think it's an advantage for them.
Starting point is 02:20:37 I think, you know, you get to the Super Bowl and you just let it all hang out. So I would suspect that Patrick Gajon homes will probably do a little more running this week than what he's done in the past. By the way, you went from Provo, Utah to New Orleans. That is the strangest, geographical and ideological. transition in NFL history, and yet you love New Orleans. Yeah, I love it. Look, if you look at New Orleans, there's not a lot to not love, you know, as you look at our fan base. And, you know, since the second I got there, man,
Starting point is 02:21:06 I have felt so much love from this fan base where, you know, you can't go out on the street without running into fans. They're like, I love you, you know, and then they all show up. So if you go to the game, like everyone's loud, everyone's cheering. And it is, you know, it's a religion down there, Saints football. How much do you learn? You don't want to be nosy, and you know Drew, listen, there's an old joke. You can't have two quarterbacks in the same room.
Starting point is 02:21:31 You know, like it's the only position in football. Yeah. You know, a college recruit six corners or D ends a year. You recruit one quarterback or the other one transfers. How do you build a relationship with Drew knowing you may replace him? Yeah, well, look, I think it's worked because Drew is who he is. And look, I have been extremely nosy to Drew, but he's welcomed it. You know, so I adopted his routine.
Starting point is 02:21:59 I go in early with him. I stay late with him. I pick his brain. Like, he has opened up everything to me, and I've done my best that I can to adopt it all. Taysam Hill. What was the first thing, the first thing he did, and you played high school, college, BYU, you placed. Was there a moment early that you were like, he's different?
Starting point is 02:22:20 Yeah, absolutely. I think when I saw him prepare for a game the first time, my first week there, we were playing the Minnesota Vikings Monday night football in 2017. I watched him prepare for that game and I was floored. I've never experienced anything like it. Why? Well, so this was what year 17 for him at this time. And so I went in with this expectation that like, okay, Drew's been doing this for 16 years going into his 17th season. There's not a defense he hasn't faced.
Starting point is 02:22:50 there's not a scheme that he hasn't faced. He knows the offense like the back of his hand. Like, what does this guy have to prepare for? And he would go in before anyone else. He would stay later than anybody else. And he prepared like no one else have ever been around. So to me, as a rookie, I was like,
Starting point is 02:23:07 well, if Drew's doing this, who's a Hall of Fame quarterback, one of the best to ever do it, like, man, I better pay attention and I better do what he's doing. When Tateham Hill is joining us for the in New Orleans Saints. When you were drafted out of BYU, and I remember it, you're a player that you know you're athletic enough to make it, but it doesn't mean you make the roster because of fit.
Starting point is 02:23:34 Where were you sitting, standing, driving when you were told Sean Payton, the smartest offensive guy, he and Andy Reed, wanted you on the team. Do you remember the moment? Yeah, well, I was actually in the Green Bay Packers facility because they wanted me there so they could sign me to the practice squad right when everything was finished with waiver wire and everything else. And I got a call from coach, and he said, hey, man, it's Coach Payton.
Starting point is 02:24:03 Super excited. Like, I just claimed you. Like, you're going to be a New Orleans saint. We're going to get you flown down here today. And I'm fired up about it. So I remember like it was yesterday. That's great. And they, for the record,
Starting point is 02:24:18 You catch, you run, your quarterback. What's the most, I mean, simplistic question, what's the most fun? Well, I would say I'm a quarterback at heart. You know, and my vision for myself is to play quarterback. I believe in my ability as a quarterback, and that's, you know, the end goal for me. So when I'm back playing quarterback, like, that's what's most fun for me. Taysam, when you're running on the field, I ask Russell Wilson this. You're innate.
Starting point is 02:24:47 you have an innate sense of moving in between people. How much is it you are a basketball player? Yeah. Like sometimes I watch you, it's like a fast break. Yeah. Your peripheral vision. Like, can you sense I'm going to get tagged here? Do you know you're going to get hit?
Starting point is 02:25:03 Because I don't think you can teach what you or Russell Wilson do. I just think it's, did you develop that early? Yeah, I think that's a fair look. And I actually, I feel the same way. I grew up playing multiple positions. You know, I think naturally as you start Little League, they kind of just throw the best athlete at quarterback. Well, when I was in Little League, my coach was like,
Starting point is 02:25:27 no, we're going to run the ball. So I'm putting you a running back. And so I played running back one of my first years in Little League. And then if we wanted to throw the ball, it was a halfback pass. And so I think that was one of the things that I just, I always did growing up, and it was early. And it's something that I just feel really comfortable doing. Tunnel, T-O-N-A-L, it's your T-shirt,
Starting point is 02:25:47 the world's most technologically intelligent home gym and personal trainer. By the way, what are you doing? And we've got a minute left. In the off-season, I know you hang out in a place I do in Utah. We're going to do some golfing. Do you, for an athlete like you, what is your off-season? When does it start 30 seconds?
Starting point is 02:26:05 Yeah. Well, Tonel is one of those companies that helps me stay in shape. You know, during the off-season, it's an artificial intelligence system, weight system that's all in home. It's an incredible technology. But I pay really close attention to what I do in the off season. I lift a lot of weights. You know, I lift really heavy.
Starting point is 02:26:24 I will squat heavy. I will clean pole heavy. Like, that stuff is really important to me. That helps me feel like I get ready for the season. So my 30-pound curls aren't doing squat for me. Come on, I'm 55. I do 30-35-pound curls, bosses. What do you want from me?
Starting point is 02:26:42 You got to start somewhere, you know. You got to start somewhere. That hurt. That hurt, Taysam. Hey, good luck to you. Thank you. Just saw Sean Payton the other night at a Fox party. It was absolutely great.
Starting point is 02:26:53 I want to thank everybody here. Thank you a wonderful job. Thank you, Miami. And treat Jason Whitlock almost, almost as well as you treated me this week. All these people on the floor. We'll see you Monday. Enjoy the game. Last night, a blown call changed a game.
