For listening to Fox Sports
Radio.
Packed today on a Wednesday.
Stick around. You'll have fun.
This, live in Los Angeles,
rainy wet Los Angeles,
is the herd.
Wherever you may be and however you may be listening,
we're on IHeart Radio, Fox Sports Radio,
and FS1. I've got Joel Clat yelling at me
today. Peter Schrager, Albert
Breer, the very funny Will Blackman,
who's a riot on Twitter. I'm Marcellus
Wiley stopping by today. We've got
a million things going on. It's my favorite
show of the week, and Joy Taylor is joining me. Joy, it was wet, rainy, awful. There were wrecks
everywhere on the road today, except for you. I love that anytime there's weather in L.A.
It's news. It leads my show. Like, it literally does. The rest of the country is two foot of snow,
and we're like, it's raining. I went to news talk radio this morning. I didn't even do sports.
I'm like, okay, show me the road closures. Colin, you lived in Seattle, the northeast.
The rain here is fierce.
I mean, how quickly you forget.
So let me start today's show with this.
Troy Aikman is a great broadcaster.
I've known Troy for a long time.
And Troy Aikman's the best cowboy quarterback ever
in that saying something.
Roger Staubach's an all-time great.
But when Troy talks in Dallas, it lands and people talk about it
because Troy is a straight shooter.
And Troy was talking about Jason Garrett.
And right now in Dallas, it's the blame game.
blame Jason Garrett and let's blame Dak Prescott and it's old crazy Jerry and Troy Aikman was talking
about it yesterday.
Oh, for 10 years has focused on Tuesday today.
That's all we're worried about is having the best practice today that we can possibly have.
And that's been his messaging throughout and the owner's talking about getting on a run and
winning the Super Bowl.
And you've got a head coach who comes down and says, we're going to evaluate the kicker.
And then the front office says right after that that they weren't evaluating the kicker.
And it slowly trickles down.
So I think there's a lot of factors that have played.
played into this coaching obviously hasn't been players haven't played great but the front office hasn't
been great in allowing the head coach to do his job either and Troy really touches on something
Dallas has a structural deficiency the owner's the GM the owner won't give full control to the coach
and the owner speaks publicly on Sundays after games and Mondays in the morning Dallas has structural
deficiencies not talent deficiencies it's the NFL I get it we play him the coach
and we blame the quarterback.
I'm going to say something now,
and your first reaction is going to be you're crazy.
But hear me out on this.
Name the two teams in this league right now
that are super talented.
We know they're talented,
but they're massively underachieving.
The Dallas Cowboys and the Cleveland Browns.
There is no disputing that.
Those are the two chargers, maybe.
They still have an outside shot to do something.
but it's really, it really is, it's the Cowboys and the Browns.
One's massively underachieving.
Oh, wait, my bad, they both are.
But we don't view them the same, although they have the same issue.
We're blaming the coach in Cleveland and the coach in Dallas,
and the quarterback in Cleveland and the quarterback in Dallas.
It's a structural deficiency.
But they've done studies in America for years,
and it's sad, but it's true, that taller, more attractive people make more money.
Just the way the game works.
They walk into a room.
Oh, Dallas is tall and good looking, and they have some money, and they've had previous success.
And so that sort of glosses over all their issues.
Cleveland, the Browns are short.
They don't have a lot of money.
They're kind of disheveled.
They've never had previous success or had real money, and so we call them losers.
You do realize they're mostly the same franchise.
One's just tall, good-looking, and has a little bit of cash.
We always want to blame the coach and the quarterback.
But it was this year, Tony Romo said something.
It may have been on CBS and it may have been on a radio show,
but I read it somewhere in the last six months.
And he said, you know, there's never been a bad owner to win a Super Bowl.
There have been average quarterbacks.
There have been average coaches.
You and I can name them, right?
Google them.
Has there been a bad owner?
We forget about the owner.
He's wearing sunglasses.
He's up in a box.
Sometimes the network will show him.
Robert Kraft, they show a lot.
And Jerry Jones, they show a lot.
but mostly they don't show owners.
They really don't.
I don't think I've ever seen the Rams owner, the Chargers owner.
I live in Los Angeles, barely know what they look like.
But we always want to talk about the quarterback and the head coach.
But Dallas has structural deficiencies just like Cleveland.
But Dallas is a bigger brand and Dallas makes more money.
There's a lot of similarities here.
Baker, Mayfield, and Dak Prescott.
We know they're good enough to be franchise quarterbacks,
but man, there's things that bother us about both.
Freddie Kitchens and Jason Garrett.
Jason is way better.
I agreed too, but we don't like their in-game judgment at all.
Both struggle to find an offensive identity,
even though they're offensive guys.
One guy quarterbacked at Alabama.
Jason's like an Ivy League guy.
So, you know, it's funny about this.
Dallas is the big, tall, attractive, has money in a little bit of previous success.
they have the same problems as Cleveland.
And that's why I always talk about it.
The NBA is a star-driven league.
You don't have to have great structure to win a championship in the NBA,
although it would help.
But in the NFL, it starts at the top.
And if you've got deficiencies like Troy Aikman said,
nothing else works like it should.
All right, so the college football playoff rankings came out last night.
It's fairly clear in college football this year.
There are three great teams and then a seat filler.
The three great teams,
are Ohio State, Clemson and LSU.
Last night they put Georgia four, but they'll lose to LSU,
and that means Utah will make it in over Oklahoma.
And I'm okay with that because I've seen Oklahoma three times in this playoff,
and they never won.
In fact, the Big 12s never won a single game in this playoff.
The only major conference that can say that.
Let me say it again, Oklahoma's 0 and 3 in the Big 12
has never, ever won a game in this playoff.
PAC 12 has, ACC's won titles, SECs won a lot, Big 12, Big Zero Burger.
And you can call it a bias, but I would call it an assumption.
I would vote in Utah over Oklahoma if they both win their conference championship.
Go ahead, call it an agenda, call it a bias.
I will call it an assumption.
I'm always going to give Clemson and an SEC team the benefit of the doubt.
Parents do this with their kids all the time.
Two kids are going out.
They give one of them the money.
It's not a bias.
The parents don't dislike their son, but he's a little less responsible with money,
and they've seen it year after year after year after year.
So when the daughter and the son go out to the movies, they give the money to the daughter.
That's not an agenda, nor is it a bias.
It is an assumption based on history.
And college football demands that I assume, oh yes, they're not.
do. They have a preseason ranking and nobody's played a game. So I'm going to assume Clemson's
going to be great, even though they lost three NFL offensive defensive linemen, but they do
have the quarterback. They do have a great coach. They have a great defensive coordinator. They
have some skill people. So I put Clemson number one. And many people put Ohio State number one,
and people put Oklahoma number one, and people with Alabama number one, all based exclusively
on assumption. That's not bias.
It is looking at history.
And I watch the Big 12 every weekend.
The games are 56 to 49 and 49 to 39.
And their shootouts, it's mostly Oklahoma and eye rolling with the Big 12.
They don't play defense.
And when Texas is weak and now they are and TCU is good, not special,
it's a very weak conference with one really good team.
But I've seen that team three times in the playoff.
And I'm going to assume, based on how they played then and how they play now
and the conference they're in that's never changed,
they wouldn't be able to stop a nosebleed.
Forget Ohio State, LSU, or Clemson.
Meanwhile, Utah probably doesn't recruit on a level of Oklahoma,
but they've got four NFL players on their defensive side.
I have followed Utah football forever.
Well coached, tough as nails, asked Nick Sabin,
lost to him years ago in a sugar bowl.
They'll line up and smack you right in the mouth there, Wisconsin,
with a little more NFL talent on the defensive side.
So I'd put Utah in.
That's not to say that Utah's,
going to beat Ohio State or LSU or Clemson.
They won't, but they'll punch them right in the mouth.
It'll be a fist fight in the alley.
You all think it's bias.
It's not biased.
In the NFL, I have a playoff system.
You earn your way in and then 12 teams fight for a title.
In college football, we vote.
And we vote based on assumptions.
So if you're giving me Utah and Oklahoma and they both win their conference championships games
and both have an ugly loss, and they have one common opponent, UCLA.
I'm certainly not going to look at the common opponent and say, well, he beat him by this and he beat him by that.
Utah's got, I think, 11 wins.
I think like nine have been blowouts.
They got an ugly loss and one close game.
Mostly looks like Oklahoma.
But I've seen Oklahoma in this game three times, in this playoff,
and I've seen the Big 12 because I've got eyes and the television set at home,
and the games are shootouts and nobody can tackle, and it's flag football with helmets.
And I'm okay, not assuming or actually assuming that won't be able to stop.
Three of the best college offenses I've ever seen.
Ohio State's best offense ever, LSU's best offense ever,
and the best college quarterback I've seen Trevor Lawrence in 20 years.
Yes, I'm going to assume the Big 12 can't stop anyone.
And that's why college football is fun.
And we argue.
And there's not much to argue about in the NFL because New England won the same.
Super Bowl over the Rams, and we all watched it.
The big argument in the entire NFL playoffs was,
Saints got a bad call.
Think about that.
A month of NFL playoffs, one argument.
Didn't like that call in the Superdome.
College football is all about arguing.
All about urgency, assumptions, history, and arguing.
And I'm okay with that.
And I'm okay with Utah getting in over Oklahoma.
Joel Klatte will join me in one hour.
Okay, Ron Rivera got fired yesterday.
You know my opinion on Ron Rivera.
I think he's a very good coach.
For years and years, we didn't pay any attention to John Harbaugh,
and then they sure were all like, oh, John Harbaugh is great.
Ron Rivera, like Harbaugh got to a Super Bowl, John Harbaugh won his.
Ron Rivera did not.
He's available.
Five teams, I believe, he could have any of these jobs for the five.
I'll tell you where Ron Rivera is an absolutely perfect fit,
and it's not the place you think.
I think it's going to happen.
I'd accept it if I was Ron Rivera,
and if I was the owner, I would go higher Ron Rivera,
and it's a noteworthy franchise.
That is coming up.
Plus, Albert Breer around the corner.
Be sure to catch live editions of the herd weekdays in noon Eastern, 9 a.m. Pacific on Fox Sports

He's a great NFL insider.
So yesterday, Ron Rivera was fired.
I hold him in high regard.
I think he is an excellent coach.
He played in the NFL.
He's got kind of a Jack Del Rio, Anthony Lynn, Alpha Male presence.
He's a big intimidating guy, knows his stuff.
I don't know Ron.
I know people who know him.
I really like him as a head coach.
I think he deals with a lot of crap behind the scene sometimes with Cam Newton that people
don't see.
He doesn't let out.
Cam jumped to his defense yesterday.
I think Ron's excellent.
And I think in life, excellent people get fired.
All the time.
Really good people and all sorts of industries get fired.
I think Ron's great.
And he talked about it yesterday.
He's a very proud guy.
This has been a crazy division.
Even with Drew Breeze, it's like every year
there feels like there's a surprise team.
He got to a Super Bowl one year.
It came out of nowhere.
Here's Ron yesterday.
I'm proud that I took over to a 214 team.
and won back to back to back.
See the emphasis?
One?
Three in a row.
Okay?
Whether you define it by wins or losses,
or you define it by winning the division?
To me, that's three years in a row of consecutive winning.
Okay, so I want to make sure we're straight on that.
I get tired of hearing, oh, they couldn't win three years in a row,
two years in a row.
No, we won three years in a row.
So let's get that straight.
And we were the first team in the NFC to do it.
So I'm pretty doggone proud of that.
Should be.
Didn't have a Hall of Fame quarterback.
It's hard to win your division, three years and a row.
row when you got good quarterbacks, not special quarterbacks. He's excellent. There's going to be
five jobs that I'm pretty sure are going to be open, and I would argue he's the leading candidate
in most of them. So what is Ron Rivera going to avoid? Because he's a successful guy. His agent's going to
get a bunch of calls. His agent's a lucky guy today, and so is Ron. So Ron's going to get his pick.
But when you're really talented and you get let go in any relationship, personal or business,
what do you not do?
You avoid the pratt falls of your previous job.
If you date somebody, they've got a big temper, explosive temper, and you break up.
You're not going to date somebody again with that kind of temper.
In fact, the pendulum will swing.
You'll probably go to somebody who's laconic with no temper at all.
You'll overcompensate.
That happens all the time.
So of the five jobs, let's put them out there.
Washington has an opening already.
Atlanta's going to have an opening.
Dallas could have an opening.
The Cleveland Browns, probably, they'll have an opening.
And the New York Giants will have an opening.
Those five.
So let me eliminate Atlanta for the only reason is,
I doubt they would hire a third straight defensive coach.
If I was Atlanta, I'd hire Ron Rivera.
But they had Mike Smith, they have Dan Quinn.
My guess in 2019, 2020, the way
world works, you're going to go offensive. I get it. I don't agree with it, but I get it.
Let's eliminate Cleveland.
Okay, Ron Rivera had a high profile celebrity quarterback that was inconsistent.
That's Cam Newton. That's Baker Mayfield. I think Ron would like to go to a place
with a quarterback doesn't have a million commercials and the quarterback's not a star and the
quarterback's not a celebrity and the quarterback's accuracy is excellent.
Let's eliminate Cleveland.
Let's eliminate Washington because during Ron Rivera's time, he dealt with an ownership change.
And I think Washington's got a lot of messes from quarterback to GM to ownership.
I don't think it's a great job.
I think he's better than the Washington job.
So now it comes down to Dallas and the New York Giants.
And I think most media people I listened to yesterday said Dallas is the fit.
Let me suggest that the New York Giants are a perfect fit.
And let me give you the reasons.
Number one, the Giants have gone back-to-back offensive coaches.
Macadoo and Pat Shermer, two whiffs.
They'll go to defense.
The Giants' offense is pretty darn good in spots.
They need defense.
The Giants also are going to finish with a second.
worst record in the NFL after Cincinnati.
They're going to have a chance to get Chase Young defense.
Who would use Chase Young really well?
Ron Rivera, a defensive guy.
They have a quarterback that I think Ron Rivera would be attracted to.
He doesn't talk.
He almost looks like the past quarterback who didn't talk.
Daniel Jones.
No celebrity, no commercial, no star power, no cam, no distraction,
totally focused on a rookie contract for two more years.
Dak, you've got to pay him now in Dallas.
Daniel, you have to pay him for years in New York.
Dave Gettelman, the general manager of New York.
Oh, wait.
Ron Rivera won back-to-back-to-back divisions with Dave Gettlement.
So Gettlement, who's on the brink of getting whacked,
can save his job and go, I've won divisions with that guy.
That's my guy.
And the owner's like, all right.
So Washington's got a crazy owner.
The Giants owner, the Mara family, quietest guy in the league.
Cleveland's got an outspoken, commercial-infused quarterback.
Giants have one that nobody in New York can recognize.
In New York, they can't recognize him.
You got the Gettlement, you got the Daniel Jones, you got the laconic quiet owner.
This is a Giants coach.
They've had back-to-back offensive guys, McAdoos Schumer, with both of them.
This is the guy.
The New York Giants and Ron Rivera, I think.
he'd get Chase Young with a number one or two pick,
along with Dexter Lawrence last year.
He'd make that defense sing.
He's made Carolina's defense sing for a decade.
That's your guy.
Joy with the News.
No, no, no, no, no.
Turn on the news.
This is the herd line news.
Well, obviously the next question in Carolina is Cam Newton.
He spent his entire career with Ron Rivera in Carolina.
Yeah.
When the news broke that Rivera was fired,
Cam took to Instagram to thank his former coach.
He said,
will be forever grateful because of the impact you had on my life.
Thank you for giving me an opportunity.
Thank you for believing in me.
I can go on and on.
But most importantly, thank you for allowing me to be me.
This one hurt deep.
It's also being reported that Cam will have surgery on his foot
with the hopes that he'll be ready for offseason workouts in March.
He has one more year in his contract and a $19 million cap hit in 2020.
So the question of, is the future of the Carolina Panthers going to be built around
Cam Newton when the new owner is making pretty dramatic changes.
Fired his head coach yesterday.
Word is he's going to fire his general manager.
Cam's not a big cap hit.
What do you do?
Well, we've talked a lot about this even before Ron Rivera was fired,
which, you know, the possibilities of trading Cam Newton and where would he end up.
I do think that Cam Newton has a lot of football left to play.
I think sometimes things just run their course and run their time, just as in we all
think that Rom Avera is a very well respected and capable coach. We know that. We've seen that
with his time in Carolina. So obviously, Tepper wants to go in a different direction. Romero is
going to have a job, a head coaching job in the league next year. We all know that. So Cam Newton's
kind of in the same situation. I just think he has to get healthy and have the time to actually
heal without any pressure. Somebody will make, you know, I've always compared him to Westbrook.
Westbrook found a good home, Houston. He'll find a buyer. The question is what the buyer is, I don't
think the market for cams as big as we think.
I think there's 15 good young quarterbacks,
three more coming in, maybe four.
The thing with the young quarterbacks is
there are a couple teams who don't have,
well, at least in my opinion, the time to develop
a young quarterback. For example, the Bears.
They have a Super Bowl level defense right now.
They don't really have three more years.
That defense is going to look different in three years.
The Chargers, obviously, are not only
in a very urgent football situation,
but an urgent business situation.
So what can they do within the next year to sell season tickets?
And after all, this is a business situation.
So if he is healthy by March,
and you can have a better idea of what he's going to start looking like next year
and where he's going to end up,
I do think that he's not going to be there, though.
Because if Tepper's making a move like firing Ron Rivera midseason,
we're assuming that Cam Newton's not going to be there either.
So Eli Manning was benched for rookie Daniel Jones early in the season,
but he could be making comeback this week.
Jones is in a walking boot with a mid-high ankle sprain.
So Eli will likely start on Monday against the Eagles.
He last started week two in a loss of the bills.
The Giants are obviously two and ten.
Their final games at the Eagles, then the Dolphins, at the Redskins, and at the Eagles again.
And in typical Eli fashion, he may come in and just end up winning a couple of these games.
Now that it's going to move them very far in the draft position based off their record already.
I don't know if they're going to win these games.
I think Eli was a shot fighter when he got benched.
I still think he's a shot fighter.
Well, Eli is 116 and 116 in his career.
That's so perfect.
Well, we're assuming they're not going to win out.
So he's probably going to fall below 500 if they lose on Monday.
Giants owner Steve Tisch said it's a frustrating season,
but no decision on the team's future will be made until the end of the season.
So whatever's happening with the Giants will continue until the end of the season,
at least according to the owner at this point.
Finally, Tua was projected to be a top draft pick all year,
but his season ending hip injury, obviously,
is going to probably affect his stock.
He has until January 20th to make his decision to declare for the draft,
and right now he said he's still weighing his options.
He said, I'm still not too sure.
The risk if I stay is, obviously, do I get hurt again?
The reward is that I could come back and have another good year,
like my sophomore year, and elevate myself back to the very top of the draft.
If I leave, I think the risk is a little higher.
That risk would be how far do I drop?
To me, it's 50-50 between going in the first round and possibly going in the second round.
Oh, good Lord.
This is...
Bad advice?
This is very bad advice.
First of all, he's not going to be the number one pick next year because Trevor Lawrence and Justin Fields are going one and two.
I don't care if he goes for 100 touchdowns at Bama.
Trevor Lawrence is won.
Justin Field.
He's at best.
Three.
And that's...
That is if the top two teams need a quarterback.
So the other thing is, and I think this year he's going to be the second or third quarterback taken,
the other thing is if he's being told he's going to drop out of the first round, that is nonsense.
That is absurd. Cincinnati needs a quarterback. Miami needs a quarterback. The Charters want a quarterback.
You and I have talked about this. There's about seven, the Saints may need a quarterback. The Bears may need a quarterback. There's seven, eight teams that need a quarterback.
This is terrible advice. There's a lot of teams that need a quarterback. And even some teams that don't necessarily need a quarterback this year, but might in a year or two.
but aren't going to be in that draft,
aren't planning to be in that draft position might take him.
I mean, Daniel Jones wasn't supposed to start this year,
but here we are.
So look, I don't, I think this is horrible advice.
Unless you just truly want to play one more year of college
and your aspirations are not to have a great NFL career,
then this is perfect advice.
You know, Matt Leiner came back for one more year of college
and it hurt his reputation.
People said, why doesn't he want to compete in the NFL?
And he dropped.
He would have been a higher draft pick.
If Tua stays, does it make you think, does he not want to be an NFL quarterback?
Well, no, I think, but based off what he's saying, that would be the opposite of that.
He said money on the first contract is a big factor.
He could lose millions by dropping in the draft.
This is why you need to just calm down and look at the bigger picture.
He's not wrong.
The first contract should not be your concern anyway.
No.
You should be concerned about your second and third contract.
So if you enter the NFL draft, obviously a lot of teams are not going to be able to evaluate him
because he's not going to be far enough into his rehab
for him to be properly evaluated
during the combine and draft workout process.
We know that.
So they're just going to be basing it off of what he's already done
and faith that he's going to have a full recovery.
Yeah.
Okay?
Which to me is worth the risk because the draft is a crapshoot anyway.
So if you need a quarterback,
this is worth the risk.
The best thing that could happen to Tua is going to happen.
He's going to drop to about 10 or 11
and the Carolina Panthers or Chargers
loaded rosters to its star running backs are going to get him
and they can throw it 16 times a game.
21, 23, they can babysit him for a year.
If you had a son and your son was Tua,
you would tell him privately, I'm praying you fall to 12.
You end up with a better football team.
Always in a better organization, owner, offensive one.
Even if you dropped to 32, that's worked out quite swimmingly for Lamar Jackson.
The point is you're going to get,
better rehab. You're going to get better doctors. You're going to get better care, better
nutritionists, better training. All around the board, not saying that Alabama isn't that,
but they're not the NFL. So you're going to be in a better position as far as your rehab goes
once you get with an NFL team. You're not going to be evaluated based off of playing other
college kids when you're with an NFL team. And there's not going to be the pressure to rush you
back because everybody knows how serious your injury is. That's bad advice. Don't make decisions
based off money. Yeah. Joy with the news.
Well, that's the news.
And thanks for stopping by.
The Hurd-Lie News.
One of the reasons I go to PFF.com, and I think you should do, that's the analytic site.
Chris Collinsworth, broadcaster, former player, is a part owner of, and it's great.
I wish I was a part owner of it.
It's amazing.
Chris, if you have availability, I'm interested.
So it's called pff.com.
They grade every player.
And they just graded the top 10 quarterbacks in the NFL, and they have Tom Brady 10.
And what they're basically saying is, and I'll read the course.
quote here, Brady's not the problem in New England, but for the first time in a long time,
he may not be able to overcome it. Thank you. This is what we've been saying. This is what
my eyes tell me. Tom Brady's not the problem, but at 42, he's no longer capable of taking a
B minus offensive line, C minus wide receivers, D plus tight ends, and B running backs. He's not now at 42
able to overcome that and take them to a different area.
There's only three guys in the NFL to me that can.
Patrick Mahomes, Russell Wilson, and Deshawn Watson.
Don't get me Lamar Jackson.
We don't know how he would be if Baltimore had a terrible offensive line
and no running game and bad receivers.
He doesn't.
We know Russell Wilson.
We know Mahomes.
We know Deshaun Watson.
We've seen those guys overcome issues.
Bad running game, no running game, offensive line,
especially Russell Wilson and Deshawn.
We've seen that.
I mean, Russell led the NFL in touchdown passes one year
with the lowest rated offensive line.
Do not include Aaron Rogers with that.
Aaron Rogers has a career road losing record.
He can't overcome a two-and-a-half-hour flight to a road game.
So this is the point.
It's not a Brady issue.
Those are two different issues.
Tom Brady issue would be like in Chicago.
They got a Mitch Trubisky issue.
You've got to get a new quarterback.
This is not the issue.
It's not you need a new quarterback.
It's that we don't have a young quarterback, an athletically dynamic quarterback,
talented enough and young enough and spry enough and dynamic enough to overcome our issues.
So ask yourself, what are the issues?
Well, I'm going to drop a bomb on you.
The issue is Belichick.
19 years, he can't draft skill people.
In 19 years, and remember, NFL teams keep six receivers, three times.
tight ends and four running backs.
Every year.
He has drafted
one skill person
in 19 years. Running back
tight end receiver who's made a Pro Bowl.
Gronk.
That's it. Edelman's never made one.
Gronk is the
only skill player.
In 19
years, Belichick has drafted
that's a pro bowler. Gronk, that's
it.
19 years. Go look at Houston's wide receiver.
every dynasty has a whole.
Every great superstar. Elon Musk is smart but crazy has a hole.
Mayor Bloomberg in New York running for president.
Best candidate of my life. He's got a whole. He's got no personality.
He's got no personality. It's a telegenic personality race as much as a political race to be president.
Trump lacks a lot of things, but he's got a personality.
So Belichick, this was fine when Brady was 24 and 28 and 32 and 33.
Tom is 42 now.
This is not a Tom issue.
PFF says it.
It's a weapons issue.
He can't overcome a bunch of B minus C plus stuff.
New England simply doesn't draft skill people very well.
They get B, B minus running backs, C, C minus wide receivers,
one great tight end.
Aaron Hernandez, good for a while, now has left us.
But, you know, I went this morning and I'm not saying Belichick's not a genius,
but every genius either has a dark side or it's like when you drive a car and there's a blind
spot in the car.
I just, I test drove a car about a month ago.
And they have this thing where the car has, a very nice car, has a blind spot and a little red
diamond shows up on your windshield when a car enters your body.
blind spot. And this was a very nice car and it was not cheap and all the manufacturing to build
that car that was very expensive, right? I don't generally buy expensive cars, but it was very nice.
And they couldn't eliminate the blind spot. All the windows couldn't eliminate the blind spot.
Because everybody has one, every car has one, every person has one, every dynasty has one.
Belichick doesn't draft skill people well. He's awful at wide receiver. He hit one home run at
tight end. And his running backs,
guys.
PFF, very smart.
Albert Brear coming up. Thoughts on that. Cam Newton, what is his market?
Kind of feels like Westbrook. They'll be a buyer, but not as many as we think.
They'll be a buyer. Some rockets went out and bought him.
But the market's not as big as we think with all these young stars coming into the league
and these young stars now in the league.

This is Clever Taylor the Fourth.
And on my podcast, The Clifford Show, I'm bringing you conversations about all kinds of stuff.
Like being an internet famous referee.
We're in the middle of a game.
This linebacker, this linebacker walks up to me.
He goes, hey, ref, my mom wants you to wave at her.
What?
Time out.
Quarterback on office blue with 42.
Hey, rec, my mama want you to wave at her.
What?
Where's she at?
Hey, Miss Parker.

Network available on the I-Hart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.
Senior NFL reporter, lead guy, MMQB via the Coward Global Satellite Network, one of my
favorite information guys, Albert Breyer Monday morning quarterback.
Let's get to the Ron Rivera firing.
He's obviously a good coach.
I think he's going to have multiple opportunities.
My thing is, the Gettlement connection to New York.
He's got a quarterback.
He didn't have to pay for a few years.
Dallas, you've got to pay DAC.
I think the Giants are a perfect.
fit, what say you? The Giants make some sense, but I don't think the Giants are going to move on
from Pat Schumer just because Ron Rivera is available. If they move on from Pat Schumer, I think
it'll be separate from that. I think that is on the table depending on how they play over the next
month or so. And I do think that Ron Rivera would be under consideration. He's maintained his
relationship with Dave Gettlement. I also think Baylor coach Matt Rule would be somebody to keep an eye on
in New York. He's from the area. The Jets interviewed him last year. Almost hired him. And of course,
relationship with the team because he worked there in 2012. And so Baylor coach Matt Rule could be
somebody who would be a turn the page type of guy for that franchise. Okay, Jason Garrett wins out,
makes the playoffs. Could I make the argument they keep him? Jerry doesn't like chaos at quarterback
or head coach? So here's what I would tell you about that situation. I think he's going to have to
get hot late, of course, make the playoffs. And I think he's going to have to win a playoff game to
keep his job at the very least. And the reason why is sort of logistical. They're at the end of
his contract, which means they can walk away after this year without paying him another dime.
And if they're going to re-up with him, that means drawing up a new four or a five-year deal
that's going to cost them $30 or $40 million guaranteed. And so it's not like you can just date
Jason Garrett for another year or two if you're the Dallas Cowboys. You almost have to remarry him.
And so I think they're going to consider that part of it. I think Jason Garrett is going to have to
look impressive, not just down the stretch, but in the playoffs as well to hold on
his job, especially because of some of the names you hear bandied about out there.
And I do know that the Cowboys have a special affinity for Oklahoma coach Lincoln Riley.
That's something they consider as well.
Who might be available when it comes to the decision making on what they do with Garrett?
It's interesting.
Ron Rivera is being let go.
And I'll get to the cam thing in a minute because I don't think the market for him is as dynamic
and robust as people state.
And I'll get to that in just a second.
Jim Harbaugh's name is out there.
Albert, it's very interesting.
I'm not sure I would have let Ron Rivera go.
These new owners, let's go back and look at the history of new owners.
Would you have let Ron go?
Yeah, I mean, the history of the new owners say that most guys need a mulligan after their first one.
You know, you see Steve Ross bringing in Joe Philbin and Chod Khan bringing in Mike Malarkey.
These aren't stupid people.
They didn't get rich for no reason.
I mean, it's just, it just takes some time to kind of get in a position where you're ready to make these sorts of hires.
And now David Tepper's got the utmost confidence in himself and his ability to do.
this. It's going to be interesting to see the way it goes. I understand why he wants to
change things up there. And look, there's been no secret in that building over the last
couple of years that David Tepper, and this makes sense because of his hedge fund background,
that he wants a very analytically driven organization that are going to involve sports science.
They're going to try to be very, very forward thinking. I think he felt like he needed a new coach
as part of what he was going to do, turning things over in that organization. But I agree with
you. I think Ron Rivera is a top 12 or so coach in the NFL, and it's tough to find
those guys. So good luck finding the next one.
Okay. I don't think the market, I call
him Russell Westbrook. I think the game has moved
away from Cam. It's a precision
throwing lead. He's not a precision
thrower. It's Russell Westbrook. He's a great
athlete, but he's not a precision shooter. He's awful
at shooting. And that's what the league is
now. If you can shoot, you can have so many deficiencies.
Russell's got no deficiencies,
except he can't shoot. So here's that
with Cam, it's fascinating. One of the
teams that's interesting is the Chargers,
but the Chargers have an issue. They have a
loaded roster with a lot of young guys that
about to get paid.
They don't want to pay their quarterback.
They want a Tua.
They want a Justin Herbert at 11.
They want a cheap quarterback because they got to pay about, are they going to pay Gordon?
Are they going to pay their receivers?
Are they going to pay their defensive pass rushers?
So I don't think Cam fits because Cam ultimately you'd bring him in for a year to a new stadium,
18 million, but he'd want two or three or four years.
So where's the market for Cam?
What are the two teams you look at?
Well, I mean, the Chargers are one.
I think you'd have to be a team that's very much in a win now situation.
And you're right, like the financial part of it has to come into play. Can you convince him to come in for a year at 18 million bucks, not knowing what his future is going to be beyond that? The Chicago Bears are another one that's pretty obvious if they were decided to move on from Mitch Chubesky. I think the right comp here, as far as where he is in his career as a trade piece, would be Alex Smith in San Francisco in 2013. If you remember, he had just two years left on his deal. Alex Smith had been displaced by Colin Kaepernick there. And really, Alex Smith needed somebody.
to love him. He had a lot of talent. He was the number one overall pick, but he'd sort of fallen
out of favor, and people were kind of wondering what he was as an NFL quarterback. I think with the
foot injury, that's sort of where Cam is. And so I would say the right comp right now is kind of where
Alex Smith was in 2013 when he was traded from the San Francisco 49ers, the Camas City Chiefs,
which, by the way, really did work out for the Chiefs. Smith was a good quarterback there for a few
years. And also mentored Patrick Mahomes for a year, so he was a great guy to bring in the room.
Finally, PFF, which I lean on for grading positions, I don't
watch like guard and center.
They came out today with their new quarterback grades and they said,
Brady's not the issue, but he's not good enough at this point to overcome their issue,
which is no skill people.
19 years, Gronks, the only guy Belichick has drafted at a skill position,
receiver tied in running back who's a pro bowler.
It's unbelievable, right?
Is maybe this more on Bill's inability to get speed on the perimeter, not Tom's issue?
Well, I think it's about the complexity of the offense.
And that's why most of the guys that they brought through there have been pretty experienced.
They very rarely leaned on young guys, especially at the skilled positions.
You look at it, Welker had three years in Miami before he got there.
Danny Amandola had been in the league for four years before he got there.
Randy Moss nine years in other places before he got there.
Even Julian Edelman kind of bounced around on the Patriots roster between offense and defense for four or five years before he really got it.
they're dependent right now on Nikiel Harry and Jacoby Myers, two kids who are fresh out of college.
And that's a real rarity in that system.
And so I think the question becomes either you mess that up or do you need to get a little simpler?
Do you need to meet them halfway?
That might be part of the equation here.
And as for Brady himself, I'd agree with you.
I don't think he's falling off a cliff the way Peyton Manning or Brett Farb did at the end.
I think the right comparison, Colin, is John Elway under Mike Shanahan.
John Elway wasn't John Elway anymore in 96, 97, 98.
But if you gave him a lot of help and he had Rod Smith, Ed McCaffrey, Shannon Sharp, Terrell Davis,
he gave him a lot of help. He was just fine.
I think that's the phase of his career that Brady's in right now.
That's a really good one.
I remember those years too.
And I was surprised when Elway, the only difference is I was surprised when El Ray retired.
I'm surprised Brady still playing.
So Albert Breer, Monday morning quarterback. Good stuff, man.
Appreciate you stopping by.
All right, thanks, Colin.
Coming up in about five, 10 minutes is Joel Clat will yell and scream at me.
the college football playoff seating is out and it looks good to me, I'm fine with it.
I don't have any big issues.
I will, you know, at the top of the hour is, you know, I used to, I was a local radio host,
very polished.
And then I went to syndicated and I did that for a while.
And then I came to Fox and I stopped taking phone calls.
And about two or three times a year, maybe more, somebody will come up and say,
how come you don't take phone calls?
And my takeaway is because I got tired.
of stating facts and arguing with people over facts.
Now, we can argue over who's better Utah, Oklahoma.
We can argue over that.
But I got tired of stating this, because this is what's happened in America.
Nobody wants information.
People seek affirmation.
Conservatives watch Fox News.
Liberals watch MSNBC.
Nobody's interested in learning anything.
You just want to go to the place where you hear to affirm your current beliefs.
You're not interesting switching sides.
I'm a moderate.
I switch sides.
I feel like I'm on an island sometimes.
I vote for that side.
This side.
Just give me the best candidate.
But most of America is into affirmation, not information.
I got tired of arguing with people on like facts.
And there's a coach out there that you keep blasting.
And I'm not going to take calls on it.
I'm going to defend him.
And what do you know that coach that I keep defending and you keep ripping?
You're not going to believe the job he's up for.

Okay.

It's bad TV.

Joel Clatt and I argue about a lot of stuff all the time, but I'm not going to argue about facts.
So there's going to be about five or six NFL openings.
One of them is going to be in Carolina.

He's a real smart guy.
You know, worth a bunch of billion dollars.
Pretty smart guy.
You know who the leading candidate for the job is?
Jim Harbaugh.
Oh, he can't coach.
Yeah, Fox spent odds out today, rumor, starting Harbaugh is the leading candidate.
But I thought he's such a terrible coach.
he's why I stopped taking phone calls.
If you don't get Jim Harbaugh as a good coach, you're dumb.
I can't help you.
San Diego, three years, win, win, win.
Stanford, one and 11 takes them over.
They win the Pack 12 a few years later.
44 and 19 at San Francisco, 49ers.

He goes to Michigan, six and a half wins.
I was at his first game.

16 years coaching, 14 winning seasons.
The only place he didn't win was the first two years at Stanford because they were 1 in 11.
he went in as a 41-point underdog against Pete Carroll at the Coliseum and kicked his arse.
At the time, it was the greatest upset win in the history of college football.
If you don't get it, I can't help you.
That's why I stopped taking phone calls to a radio show.
He can't coach.
Really?
If you were a school teacher, a principal, a landscaper, an attorney, a coach, a talk-so host,
and you go to four places and you win in all of them.
You get ratings in all of them.
in cases in all of them. You solve mysteries in all of them. You eradicate disease in all of them.
You're a good medical researcher. If you're a salesman, four different jobs, you're great in all
of them. But Colony makes $7 million a year. Who gives a rip? He came out of the NFL. Michigan had to
overpay at the time because he had a bunch of leverage. Getting paid, you don't get paid for just wins.
You get paid in life because of, I mean, Joey and I know, the timing, leverage to multiple people fight over you.
you. I mean, if you could be the most talented guy,
gal in the world, but if nobody's fighting over
you, a company's like, I remember when I
used to work at the other place,
and Fox Sports
1 started a
sports network. This is like, you know, 7, 8 years
ago, right? And everybody at the other place
was like, well, I hope those guys
do nothing. And I remember saying,
you guys are idiots. You want
Fox Sports 1 to be great. Otherwise,
the other place doesn't have to pay us.
Coke needs a Pepsi
or Coke doesn't need to pay any of
their employees. It's the threat of Pepsi that gets Coke guys paid. So Jim Harbaugh got a lot of
money because he was 4419 and one in the NFL. And there's like 30 job openings. And you have to
overpay when people are on the market and they're talented. But Fox bet odds. Look at that.
Harbaugh. Over Josh McDaniels, over Urban Meyer, actually. All right. Maybe he can coach a little.
And by the way, one of the only people in America that has ever, you know,
Clat and I don't agree on anything, Voice of College football.
Clat and I don't agree on anything.
The one thing we agree on is Jim Harbaugh can coach.
4419 and one in the NFL, he's the leading guy for Carolina.
Let's bring in the Voice of College football.
Joel Clat, who will be doing the Big Ten championship game live, Lucas Oil Stadium.
Wisconsin will keep it close for a while, but Ohio State will win.
I won't ask you about that.
All right, how are you?
I'm good.
How are you doing?
You look like today you didn't shave, which is rare because you're so, such a golden boy.
Is that it?
Today you look a little rougher.
You know what I got?
You know, last week you were like, you know, what are you eating?
I was like almonds.
I love almonds.
Yeah.
I had a couple of different people in Michigan Stadium hand me almonds.
It was a thank you.
I appreciate it.
It was great.
Maybe somebody in Indy can hand you a razor.
Look at you today.
You're handsome.
Okay, let's go with this.
So let me give you, here's the big four.
Here's what college football play, you know, gave us.
Yeah, yeah.
Bottom line is if Utah wins, they're number five.
If Utah wins they're in, I have no problem.
But here's.
Oh, I don't know about that.
Well, Georgia is going to lose to LSU.
So let's assume that.
But you're just assuming Utah wins in the argument over Oklahoma.
Well, they've been above them all year.
Yeah, but Oklahoma has a much tougher opponent this week than Utah.
That is not a clear-cut deal.
I don't know if why.
Why would you just think like Utah goes automatically?
So here's going to be my big argument.
And Oklahoma already hates me.
This will go deep.
There's a difference between bias and assumption.
Okay.
Bias is I would never vote Clemson number one because I want to
They're South Carolina, and I hate those guys.
Assumption is, I think I'm going to put Clemson in,
because every time they're in this, they play big.
They're great in big games.
That's assumption.
The Big 12s never won a single game in this playoff.
In this playoff.
Oklahoma's 0 and 3.
I have eyes on a TV set.
They're playing flag football.
Utah's got NFL bodies all over that defense.
I don't think any, I don't think Oklahoma or Utah are going to beat Ohio State.
Well, the problem is, is that we still have to pay attention
to resume at some point. And the fact of the matter is is that Utah has played one ranked
team and they lost. Okay. You know, we've never had a team enter the playoff without at least
two wins against ranked opponents. Utah doesn't have one yet. They might get one against
Oregon, but they're only a 10-win team. Meanwhile, OU is going to have three wins against
ranked opponents if they win on Saturday. Two of those will be against an 11-win Baylor team,
one of them on the road. You know, so listen, I just, and I disagree. How do I not look at Oklahoma
in the Big 12s past and these big games?
and they can't stop a nosebleed.
This whole sports base is an assumption.
But who stopped them? Hold on.
You're making this off of an indictment
over the, on the Big 12.
If you actually look statistically, excuse me, into bowl games,
what Big 12 teams generally do in bowl games
is that they're gaining about their average,
giving up about their average,
and then they drastically outperformed based on the averages
that their opponents generally have in their regular season.
So I think that's a completely wrong,
assumption to just throw Oklahoma out. Oklahoma's going to have the much better resume.
And who are you to say, listen, I would love to see Oklahoma and Utah play.
I think Utah has been, when I just watch them a better team, Oklahoma is going to have a much
better and stronger resume.
If Utah gets in, it will be an unprecedented weak resume to get in.
You know what?
Precedents need to be broken.
You just like it because you've got a home there.
You've always loved Utah.
You've been a Whittingham guy, Joy.
You know what I'm talking, right?
He's always, first of all.
You didn't say that yesterday.
I have a home there and very nice people.
Here's the point.
Is your second or third?
Okay.
Whatever.
So here's the thing.
So you said, Klat, you said, I've watched and I think Utah's better.
By the way, so have I.
Precedents are made to be broken.
But here's the thing about Oklahoma.
Oklahoma always has a better resume.
Every year that the better scoring team and the flashier team and the Heisman team and the quarterback team and the Lincoln Rodney team and the Bob Stubis team,
every year their resume looks great because they beat a bunch of flag football teams outside of TCU that plays real defense or at least tries.
to. The bottom line is the Big
12, I'm going, college football
asked me to do a preseason ranking
based totally on assumption. Nobody's played.
The NFL doesn't ask me to do that.
College football asked me to look into history, look into
assumption, look into recruiting, look at NFL bodies.
I just totally disagree with
your premise about the Big 12. If you're
listen, if OU was out there
getting pummeled in the playoff,
then I would say, yeah, like
there's clearly a problem. Their defense is.
Yeah, their defense has been
not even close to up to par, but
their defense is drastically better this year.
Do you know they're the number one total defense in the conference?
I don't want to hear it.
They are.
Listen, you don't want to hear it.
Those are the facts, though.
That's the problem.
And to suggest that they didn't have a chance against Georgia two years ago,
that game was an over time.
That was an unbelievable game.
Last year, they basically spot Alabama 21 points,
and then from there played an unbelievable game.
Yeah, after they spotted them 21 points.
Well, I've talked with Lincoln Riley about that.
I thought it was a mistake that they deferred.
I mean, you're just riding them off.
I think that is a completely flawed position right now.
You can't write Oklahoma off because Alabama beat them last year.
No, I'm writing off a conference that's never won a game in this.
I'm assuming they can't stop anybody because I have eyes on a TV set and nobody can stop anybody in that conference.
You want to give Utah credit because Marcus Mariotta was a generational player and throttle a very flawed, undefeated Florida state team.
Yes, you are.
That's what you're doing, though.
That's what you're saying the Big 12 is never won in this type of scenario.
Well, Oregon's the only Pac-12 team to have won in this.
I'm not arguing against the Pac-12.
All I'm saying is that they had a.
generationally talented Heisman winning player, and they beat Florida State, who was drastically flawed that year.
But Washington stopped a lot of Alabama.
You win when they played in the playoffs a couple years ago.
Listen, this is a false premise.
I will not allow you to sit here and say this to America.
Washington's performance against Alabama in the playoff was not nearly, not nearly the performance that Oklahoma gave against Georgia two years ago.
Not even close.
I just think it's, listen, this is, by the way, an argument against eight
because we're arguing against flawed resumes.
You know the best argument for Utah is an argument against Oklahoma?
The best argument for Oklahoma is an argument against Utah.
There's nothing about these two teams that I say like, yeah,
they deserve an opportunity to go play with those three big boys that have really earned it.
We see the world differently.
Anyway, one of us sees it right.
Hey, the view from that chalet in Utah is.
It's a different view than I have.
I'm just going to tell you that. Joy, a different view than you?
I don't know.
So one of everything, one car, one wife, one house.
All right.
Go ahead.
So I'm not sure if this is even a national topic.
You can yell in my ear if it's not.
The Dallas Cowboys have become USC football.
Oh.
The brand is shiny and fantastic and it's got history, but the quality of the actual football is not great.
USC is going to retain Clay Helton, who's a wonderful guy.
Thought he should have been the coach.
I think the program's had a total ceiling.
Recruing's in the tank.
Yeah.
And I look at the USC situation and I look at the Notre Dame situation.
Notre Dame had a series of coaches that didn't work, went and got Brian Kelly.
Now they're a player.
Yep.
USC's had a bunch of coaches that haven't worked.
I think they don't need to go get a big time coach.
What do you make of Clay Hilton being retained?
I think that if you look at it in and of itself, if you put blinders on,
and you try to look at just that decision in a vacuum,
it doesn't make much sense.
If you try to take a 30,000 foot view
of the chaos that has surrounded not only the university,
but the money that they've had to spend as a university
outside of the athletic department,
it's well over $400 million that university has had to spend
on lawsuits and settlements outside of the athletic department.
So I don't know if there's an appetite from the president down
to go spend money to fire this coach and do this.
when he's eight and four and in the college football playoff rankings,
and in particular when he's a guy that everybody likes the players respect,
and he's willing to make changes.
They're going to have to make drastic changes.
Who are they going to get?
I'm not sure.
Let's be honest.
I like Clay.
I advocated for Clay being hired,
but I do think coaches hit ceilings,
and I think there's four major programs in America,
USC Oklahoma, BAM Ohio State that are different.
And when they have the right coach,
they dominate their conference.
We've seen it with all of them.
What about this?
New stadium, nobody's in it after they get blown out by Bama in the opener.
I've told you that the two reasons why I think ADs should make decisions
or butts in the seats, revenue, and recruiting.
And both of those are at low points right now for USC.
What would you do you're the AD there?
I would tell him he's got to go hire Morgan Scali,
Scaly, the defensive coordinator for Utah.
I don't know.
Because he's obviously done it.
Scaly is a terrific defensive coordinator.
been under Whittingham for a long time.
If you're not going to change Helton, you've got to get guys that can recruit so your staff
has to change, and then you've got to get a better defensive coordinator.
Because right now, they're not tough enough on the line of scrimmage.
By the way, everybody, did you hear that?
Old clasters like, if you want to get the defense better, hire Utah's coach.
He's great.
You didn't say Oklahoma's coach.
You said Utah's coach.
Well, I mean, Alex Grinch has actually created a turnaround of epic proportions with the Oklahoma
defense.
Actually, go look at the statistics and you'll see that Grinch has done a remarkable job.
be a Grinch on your argument. But you said Utah's guide fixed everything at USA. Well, he's
West Coast. Grinch is not a West Coast guy. Technically, even though he coached at Washington State,
you can go hire Alex Grinch. You're going to have to pay him $2 million. Okay, how about this?
What are you wrong on now? Go ahead. No, no. You and I are right. Oh. Harbaugh.
4419 NFL. Do you see who's up for the Carolina job? If you're Jim Harbaugh today,
all the nonsense you take from the critics, all the hate you get from guys at this network and other
networks. I'm Jim Harbaugh today. You know what I do? When you 10 games, go to the Citrus Bowl
without me. Boom. Thanks for flying United. I'm going to the NFL. This is deeper than that.
If this was another program that he didn't have deep ties to, I think that would be the case.
He grew up there, his dad coached with Bo Schembeckler. Criticism every day. Yeah, that's fine,
but he knows what the truth is. And I've talked to him about it. You know, Jim has done an unbelievable
job. In 2014, folks, and this is not the criticism he gets.
is deserved when it comes to Ohio State only.
Outside of that, you have to understand what he's done.
He's taken a team that in 2014 was 5 and 7.
They missed a bowl game for the third time in their history.
History meeting as soon as the Big Ten expanded to allow teams to go to other
bowls other than the Rose Bowl.
And wear helmets.
So he took over a 5 and 7 team.
Ohio State won the national championship this year.
2014, folks.
So that's what he walked into.
What I bristle at is this fact of people like, well, he's got to beat Ohio State.
It's like the margin right now is so big between those two programs from what he took over and inherited to where he's trying to get.
And this is not the year to evaluate Jim Harbaugh based on what he does against Ohio State.
Ohio State is the best team I've ever covered in the booth.
I have never covered a better team than this Ohio State team in the booth.
This is the wrong year to evaluate Jim Harbaugh based on what he does against that particular Buckeye team.
I don't even say Ohio State's my criticism.
My only criticism of him is marginally he couldn't beat Michigan State enough.
Now he is.
Well, now he is.
But early, come on, you're better.
And the only real criticism I've tagged him on is, dude, you're Jim Harbaugh.
Get the quarterback thing figured out.
They've been kind of a sloppy mess at quarterback.
He's got to be, hey, I like the guy.
But he's, Shea Patterson's nice, didn't lose much at home until last week.
but he hasn't been good enough at quarterly.
He should get a five-star guy every year.
He's Jim Harbaugh.
He's an NFL quarterback.
He's a great recruiter.
It's Michigan.
I think he needs a quarterback.
She has played really well down the stretch.
Here's the one criticism I would give Michigan is that they play too
undisciplined when they get into those matchups against Ohio State.
You can't fumble.
You can't jump offside.
I mean, that's a type of deal.
When you're playing against better players, sometimes you are pressured.
You jump offside when you're playing against better players?
That's a fallacy.
Okay.
These are all jokes about the Utah House.
I ski in my backyard only.
All right, Joel,
clap. Exactly. Ski in, ski out. Must be nice.
Geez. Take that, America.
I have a ski resort in my backyard.
All right. Lucas Oil Stadium, Indianapolis,
Big Ten championship game. I think Ohio State, I think it's
really close because they beat them earlier.
It's hard to beat a team badly twice.
Wisconsin's got a great defensive mind and the best running back I've seen
since Ezekiel Elliott. I think it's close for three quarters. Then they win.
I know it's only been a couple of runs, but I'm tired and cold.
let's go back to my living room.
Hey, he's on live again Friday from Indianapolis.
You know Whitlock's from there?
He is?
Oh, good Lord.
He's one of these guys.
I was like, Brady Hoke did fine at Michigan.
Okay, 5 and 7, pound sand.
I'm out.
That's why I stopped bringing Whitlock on the show, that nonsense.
The Hoke, nonsense.
This is nonsense.
I was done with it.
I'm done with him.
All right, Joe Clack, great seeing you.
You too.
All right.
We got Will Blackman's a right.
He's going to be joining us.
Joy Taylor's got the updates next.
When's the last time you were driving through a storm?
By the way, Indianapolis could be choppy this weekend.
Could be.
You never know.
Lucas Oil is beautiful, though, inside.
I was going to say it will be like 72 with a slight air conditioning grease.
I haven't been.
I've heard it's a great stadium.
It's a great city.
You know, Indies got the best airport in the country.
Love their airport.
By the way, great big environment.
The Super Bowl there was fantastic.
I mean, Indie's a great spot.
It's a great spot.
They got a steakhouse there with a hot shrimp cocktail sauce.
Elvis.
Their tourism board better give me a nice gift after that little plug right here.
All right.

Last night, XFL minicamps kicked off at eight locations around the U.S.
Each head coach hosted their teams to a private team dinner to celebrate their first time together.
At the end of each dinner, the head coach introduced two special guests for surprise.
And right at that moment, two members of the team entered the room fully decked in the team's home and away uniforms and helmets.
And the rooms erupted, as it was the first time anyone had seen the uniform.
and they look awesome.
And...
Ooh, look at that.
Oh, my.
We got our own.
I have the Dallas renegades right here.
Yeah, so, I mean, I kept it real and did the L.A. Wildcats.
Yeah.
I actually think L.A. has got the best units in the league.
And I don't say that.
I think Dallas has the best helmet.
I think L.A. has got the best uniform.
By the way, the XFL ball's got different pebbling joy.
Thank you for the jersey, by the way.
One year to work on this ball.
And it actually, as a former quarterback, I can tell you, it's much easier.
I knew you were.
to say that.
It's much easier to grip than an NFL ball.
It is actually.
Yeah, these are great.
We should give these away at the start of the league in February.
We should give some of these away.
These are great footballs.
They are really nice, and I love this jersey.
You know, I'm never been a big uniform guy.
I don't care.
But one of the things I love about the XFL, their marketing logos stuff is great.
Oh, I'm a huge uniform person.
Are you?
Yeah, I don't freak out when they change the uniform.
My Dolphins uniform has changed like 10 times.
but no, it does. It matters.
Part of branding is, you know, recognizing great logos and colors, and they did a great job
with all of it.
So, thank you again.
Joy Taylor with the news.
No, no, no, no, no.
Turn on the news.
This is the herd line news.
All right, so David Tepper bought the Panthers in May 2018, and yesterday made a big move by
firing head coach Ron Rivera.
Yeah.
It was his first major change on the football side of the business, and Tepper explained why he
thought it was finally time to take action.
On the business side, we made vast and sweeping changes.
And I didn't want to make those vast and sweeping changes on the football side.
I'm going to take time and patience to see what could go and how it could go.
I just thought it was time, given the way things have gone the last two seasons,
to put my stamp on this organization on the football side.
As much respect as I have for Ron, I think a change was appropriate to build things
the way I want things to be built.
Now, I'm never a fan of firing coaches mid-season.
I don't, on a human level, but I think it's a competitive thing here.
They want to be available.
So let's say Harbaugh was available.
The college season's all but over, right, except for a bowl game.
So I think, Joy, they do it for competitive reasons in the marketplace.
Sure, but let's keep it real.
These conversations that are made on that level start before.
any moves are made.
So like somebody has Harbaugh's number if that's really the thing.
You think so?
Now look, some coaches, just because it's, you know, coaching fraternity won't have a conversation
with you about taking a position until the position is open.
So if that is the case, like that's a fact.
Like some people won't even take your phone call.
Like I'm not going to talk to you about taking a job that isn't vacant.
Yeah, I've heard that.
So if that's a situation, then that makes sense that they would do that.
if they have somebody that they are, say, like a Harbaugh, very interested in, but John's like,
I'm not going to take that call while Romero still has that job.
I'm not going to do that.
That is a thing.
Maybe that's what happened.
Overall, I just, I mean, obviously, like, they feel their season is over and they want to get
ahead of it.
I just don't like the idea of firing someone midseason.
That said, clearly he wants to make sweeping changes.
Yes, he does.
So he's been actually a bit patient with the situation.
It's not like he came in.
Usually when a new owner comes in or a new job.
GM. It's everything dramatic right away. He is a smart businessman. So he has plans for the Panthers.
And the Panthers have a very loyal fan base, very strong fan base. It's a very solid organization.
Yeah. So I do, I'm very interested to see what direction they go with all this because obviously
you have the Cam Newton element as well. And Ron Rivera is going to land in a great situation wherever
he goes because he's very well respected. And he's a great coach. Very good. What's happened with
Carolina is not on Ron Rivera in any way. Sometimes you just.
have to come in and make changes.
So Delvin Duck Hodges won the starting job from Mason Rudolph last week.
Yes.
And he led the Steelers to a big 2013 win over the Browns.
Cool story.
It was.
And I mean, in my opinion, it was predictable.
As soon as I saw that Freddie Kitchen shirt, I knew it was going down.
But Mike Tomlin has announced that Duck will be the Steelers starting quarterback again
this weekend against the Cardinals.
He's a gamer.
He said he has a lot of confidence in the undrafted rookie who has won both of his starts
and that he's been doing a great job of taking care of the football.
Yeah.
By the way, that's key.
Yeah, they haven't been winning in spectacular fashion.
No, no, no.
Their defense is great, and they score like one touchdown.
I mean, that's the key is their defense.
And the front seven of that defense plus Minka Fitzpatrick is scary.
It's great.
Their defense is solid.
They've had major injuries.
It's been a really crazy year for the Steelers.
So the fact that they're currently six in the AFC is remarkable.
And McTomlin's done an incredible job this year.
They have, they're at the Cardinals.
week, then they have the bills at home, then they're at the Jets and the Ravens. So to me, it's a plausible
two more wins on that. I mean, I think they lose to the bills and the Ravens. All of these
teams obviously are going to be competitive games. I can't believe. Listen, I was wrong. I can't
believe they're in the playoff hunt. I said it when Big Ben got hurt. I watched them for two weeks.
I mean, we all thought that because, I mean, certainly you and I did not believe in Mason Rudolph.
The Rams and the Steelers are still in the playoff picture. Says a lot about the coaching.
Yeah. Didn't it feel like both were done a month ago? Well, I mean, I think we all.
all probably overreacted a little too strongly to the Rams situation.
Like, the expectations should be high for the Rams based off of last year.
Yeah.
And a lot of teams that come off a Super Bowl take a step back unless they're New England.
Yeah.
So I think we probably all kind of overreacted to that.
Like, the talk of Jared Goff's contract being the worst in NFL history is like,
yeah, he was, you just played in a Super Bowl.
Like, you just relaxed for maybe two years.
He was good last week.
Yeah.
I mean, just calm down.
Like, everything's going to be okay with the Rams.
The teams go through this.
It's going to be all right.
That's too much of an overreaction.
Jared Gop is fine.
Finally, Kevin Garnett had a legendary career with the Celtics.
Same can't be said for Kyrie Irving.
And Garnett seems to think that Kyrie wasn't cut out for playing in Boston.
When he was asked if he was surprised Kyrie left,
Garnett said, no, Boston's a tough town.
You have to have some major gonace to be there.
You got to want that.
The people want it for you.
That's why Paul Pierce is perfect.
where Paul wants a shot every time.
Like you're over 14 and he's like,
I know, but they want it.
Listen, Boston and Philadelphia?
Not for everybody.
They're not. New York is friendly
compared to Boston. I said this before.
I live between both. My first
day I show up in New York,
people on the sidewalk treated me like gold.
Boston, I swear to God,
they held up U-turn signs.
Go back home. Boston's tough.
I've never been to Boston.
I've obviously heard lots of things
about Boston. I don't think that the city of Boston was the issue for Kyrie Irving, though.
I don't think the fans in Boston or the environment of Boston was the problem for Kyrie.
How about Kyrie's the problem occasionally? Well, look, I don't want to overreact to what's
happening with the Nets this year either. To me, this year with the Nets is kind of irrelevant. You don't
have KD. So whatever the situation was or expectations that you had for the Nets this year really
shouldn't be that relevant. It's supposed to be Katie and Kyrie. So however you want to have
evaluate this, it's not going to be the same next year. I didn't have any expectations for the
Nets this year. And I think at this point, we kind of know, Kyrie's not A. He's not 1A.
Like, Katie is going to be the guy the moment that he is healthy again, and it's going to be a different
situation. Then we will really see, is Kyrie capable of playing with another superstar the way
that he did with LeBron James? Because it did work with LeBron until, you know, personal things
started to deteriorate the situation. Yeah, by the way, I'm getting sourcing here.
Oh, okay. Is it sourcing that you can't share? Is it one of those? Because it's once a week, we do this. Once a week.
Call and gets a text message. Can't share it. Can't share it.
Why? It's, could we just start, guys, can we just start clipping this off?
We're going to do like every six months. We're just going to show a loop of every single week.
It'll just like be me in a different outfit and hairstyle and calling on this phone.
I cannot share this information. Hey, I'm still getting it during the show.
Do you know how frustrating that is?
Well, I don't look at it and go, I've got something.
Yes, you do.
You literally stop talking and you go like this and you're like, ooh, oh.
And then I go, can you tell us?
No.
Is that what I do?
Yes.
Okay, I'll try not to do that.
Joy with the news.
Well, that's the news.
And thanks for stopping by.
The herd line news.
I will be honest.
I root for stories.
I've said this before.
Chaos is good for my business.
I love free agency.
I love the NBA free agency more than the regular season.
And in March, the NFL free agency the last couple of years has been fascinating.
I love talking about where are people going.
It's like People Magazine if I liked Hollywood.
It's got all the gossip.
And I think it's fascinating with Cam Newton.
They fired their head coach in Charlotte.
Carolina fires them.
And they're going to fire their GM reportedly.
Chances are they'd move off Cam Newton.
But what I think is fascinating is what is the market for Cam Newton?
I think the sport is moving away from him.
I say it's Russell Westbrook.
Russell Westbrook, the one thing the NBA is looking for from guards he doesn't do, shoot
threes.
Everything else Russell Westbrook very good at.
Cam Newton, the one thing he doesn't do that everybody's looking for is precision throwing
68% completion percentage and consistency.
He doesn't do it.
It's going to be fascinating.
What is Cam's value on the market if they trade him?
He's 68, 55, and 1.
He completes 59.
percent of his throws. His passer ratings in the mid-80s, 182 touchdowns, 108 picks, seems distracted
and, oh, by the way, a bunch of injuries. What is it? Bears? Well, the Bears right now have an
athletic quarterback who's inconsistent and not always accurate. Cam's just a better version of that.
You could talk yourself out of that very easy. Denver! John Elway likes big quarterbacks with big
arms, but they have Drew Locke. He won last week. He's a second round pick.
They're going to give Drew Locke a season to prove or disprove he's the guy.
They're not going to bring in Cam over him.
LA Chargers, certainly possible.
They have an old, you know, unathletic quarterback.
And they're moving to a new stadium and needing to sell tickets.
Does Cam sell tickets out west?
I'm not sure he does.
Tua does because he's hope.
Whereas Cam, we kind of know what he is.
Also, the Chargers have four or five young players.
They got to pay real soon.
they want a rookie quarterback deal for three years.
Cam, you're going to pay $18 million to year one,
then probably 24, 26 year two and three.
Chargers have a lot of mouths to feed and a lot of great young players,
and they've got to clear out some cap space,
and you can't do it with an expensive quarterback in the mid-20s eventually.
So I am fascinated to watch.
Listen, I've never been a Westbrook fan.
I think the game moves away from him,
but he did find a very smart buyer in Houston.
Cam's going to find a buyer, but I do think the market is shrinking on Cam.
Coming up, Will Blackman, one of my favorite guests, former NFL or a very, very funny guy.
He'll be joining us.
Be sure to catch live editions of the herd weekdays in noon Eastern, 9 a.m. Pacific.

that we are in possession of the thing.
And we're still chasing it.
And we don't know when we've done enough.
Because people scoreboard watch.
Life becomes about wins and losses.
Steve Burns, Dustin Ross,

What?
Time out.
Quarterback on office blue 42.
Hey, ref.
My mom, I want you.

Hey, Miss Parker.

If you're watching the latest season of the Real Housewives of Atlanta, you already know there's a lot to break down.
Orsha accusing Kelly of sleeping with a merry man. They holding Kay Michelle back from fighting Drew.
Pinky has financial issues. I like the bougie style of Housewives show.
I think it looks like it's going to be interesting.

Will Blackman played in the NFL for a decade, a Super Bowl champ with the New York Giants.
By the way, Ron Rivera is out there.
I think the New York Giants are the perfect fit.
He's worked with Dave Gettelman, the GM.
That's a big deal.
They've had two offensive coaches.
McAdoo-Shermer have whiffed.
It's time for a defensive guy.
That's the side of the ball.
They're going to get Chase Young with the number two pick.
I think he works.
I think Ron Rivera, is he respected as a coach?
100%.
Why?
Respected by everybody.
Just he, man of integrity.
Obviously, it always helps when you play the game.
He's been around the game for 30 years.
Yeah.
You know, respected position coach, respected court,
respected everything.
Everybody likes him.
Everybody does.
Yeah, and that's a big deal.
Now, people have said, I think Giants is perfect.
People have said Cleveland, and I think he doesn't want to deal with a nonsense with Baker
Mayfield.
He wants a focused quarterback.
Matt Ryan in Atlanta.
He would want giants.
He's got Daniel Jones, who appears to be quiet, focused all football.
I don't think he wants Baker stuff.
Maybe, yeah, maybe he doesn't.
You know, I think he could handle it.
Oh, God, yes.
Yes, that's something.
I mean, I think he could handle it, but do I think he would go there?
No, I think, obviously, New York would be the way a better option for him.
I could make the argument.
In fact, I was talking to who said this yesterday.
Oh, Trent Dilfer said this.
He said what Baker Mayfield needs is a man, a 6-4, played in the game.
game, Jack Del Rio type.
Ron Rivera.
Yes.
That says Baker, sit your, you know what now.
Blank down and be quiet.
And Baker at 511 goes, okay.
Baker controls Freddie.
100%.
I said last year, I was like, he didn't even need a head coach on that team.
Like, Baker could have just random plays himself.
But now he needs a head coach.
They need direction.
In terms of like having Freddie, he needs, he does need that exactly.
He needs Anthony Lynn, Jack Del Rio.
He's a grown man.
A grown man who says, hey, zip it up.
I'm done with you.
Could Mark McCarthy be that grown man?
Potentially.
He wouldn't be the first grown man.
I take Ron Revere is a really grown man.
I think Jack Del Rio would be my two.
Ron Revere is my one.
Jack Del Rio's my two.
That's my thought.
Okay.
So pro football focus came out with some numbers and grades,
Will Blackman, who's also a Hawaiian Somali,
or training to be.
Training to be.
It said it's not Brady.
It's his weapons.
Do you know in 19 years Bill Belichick has drafted
one pro bowler at wide receiver tied-end running back.
Is it possible?
That is it.
Yeah, because everyone else was a free agent, right?
So we're all banging on Brady.
Can we now shift it and say,
maybe it's Belichick can't get him help?
You thought Muhammad Sunu was going to be big, so did I.
I really did.
And already I think, you know, we can say he's health.
He's not healthy right now, but I thought he's going to be a huge acquisition for them.
And right now, right, it's like he's whole.
holding the ball looking for someone to throw to.
He's known for getting rid of the football.
I quit.
Yes.
And right now he is going through progression twice.
Is it possible Tom, as he's aged, has gotten a little rigid?
Russell Wilson works with everybody immediately.
Tom seemingly works with nobody.
It even took Edelman four years.
Maybe I need to rewatch the film, but I don't think anyone's getting open.
There are guys that are wide open for Seattle.
It's not a great receiving court.
But also, Russell buys more time, so it's hard to cover somebody for four.
and a half seconds. Because you take that into account, Russell taking off because
when the game's on the line, Russell is running for that first down if it's there.
When you, I watch Seattle Monday night, Will Blackman joining us. And I take, and I don't do
this. I'm not into predicting Super Bowls. But I watched it and I said, and I said this last week,
and I say, I said it before Monday night and I said it after. Raven Seahawks feels like the
Super Bowl to me. And I feel fairly comfortable saying it. And I would agree because right now,
those are the two teams having the most fun.
By far.
They just look like they're enjoying every moment.
Why does that matter?
Because when you're a team that's having a lot of fun,
that means everyone in the entire organization
has brought into what the mission is, to what we're doing.
Like everyone is all in.
You were on the Giants team like that?
Oh, yeah.
Tell me about it.
Well, so basically, I remember we went to New Orleans
and just got demolished.
I remember that.
I remember that.
Like, wow, we're playing man.
You know, we got obliterated.
But we had guys in that team where we just finally got together,
cussed each other out and was like, all right, let's do this.
Let's figure this out because we can still make this happen.
And hands down, that was just the most fun because guys were going to each other's house,
watching the film, guys were always hanging out with each other,
guys were going to dinner, guys were really invested in each other as players.
It was almost like we were with our teammates more than we were with our own spouses.
Well, we watched Seattle doing all those wide receiver fun.
That's what I'm saying.
Exactly.
Exactly. So that takes time. So you think Seattle and Baltimore feel like they bought in, you know what's underrated with Seattle? So everybody's looking at Seattle early in the year when they got their ears box by the Saints. Right. They add Quadrie Diggs. Clownie was there, but not quite in the system. Shout out to John Snyder. What?
No, Seattle added three big flash Gordon, Clownie, and Diggs at safety from Detroit. They give up a fifth rounder. Those are three playmakers in the NFL. Immediately digs for his game. Immediately.
So they brought on three Pro Bowl-level players.
Right.
And two in the middle of a season.
One took a while to get going.
And I honestly think Seattle is a different team today than two months ago.
And Baltimore, by the way, was two and two, hadn't figured out their identity.
Couldn't be as aggressive as they wanted to.
So they went and got Marcus Peters and thought, okay, now we can bring up.
Yeah, because the issue was when you think of Baltimore, you think of defense, right?
Aggressive.
Historically.
You think of defense.
And it was the offense that was leading the charge in the beginning.
And then eventually defense started catching on the right.
They added Marcus Peters and angry revenge, vindictive Marcus Peters,
ready to go.
And sure enough, you know, and I felt like the defense already had the players,
the personnel to be a really good defense.
And they just finally caught on.
So now they marry the two.
And it's like they're the most dangerous team that I see in a long time.
Okay, Cam Newton.
I think there's a market for him.
I don't know if it's a huge market, but there'll be a market.
And he's too talented.
And by the way, at this point, he's a bargain financially.
Right.
He really is.
If you have a team like, you know, you have a real roster.
And you got, and for a year or two, you want to win games,
Chicago feels kind of like it would work.
Is there a place you think he'd fit?
Well, when you say a, when he needs a roster,
Chicago does look really good.
But I'm going to go off.
I'm going to go crazy here.
I'm going to say, I like him in New England.
If so, look at your face.
If say something, I don't know, this is what I thought.
I picked New England to go and win a Super Bowl early in the preseason.
They're not going to.
Okay.
In the preseason, I picked that.
They get their seventh win.
Brady rise into the sunset.
And I thank Cam to New England.
And, you know, they just, they know how to be innovative and they figure something out.
I don't know.
I've thought about this.
So there's been rumors, Brady put a house up for sale.
There have been rumors about Brady leaving.
Those only, Adam Schaefter put those out.
Adams, no, legit.
There's rumblings.
Brady is tired of the offensive lack of skill people.
That's why the Chargers rumors come up because they got a good tight end.
They got two backs.
They got receivers.
They draft skill players.
For Cam?
No, for Brady.
Brady doesn't make the playoffs.
And Brady's got a house in L.A., which he does, a house in Palm Springs, and says,
last year in L.A.
Want to go hang out, family, California.
then Cam moves in.
That's not crazy.
That's not crazy at all.
I don't think it's the craziest thing in the world to suggest
that Tom getting more into the entertainment business ends his career in Los Angeles.
I don't think that's a reach.
I think the Chargers, I think he would change the Chargers culture.
Has there been a franchise in your life that loses more games they should win than the Chargers?
Tom tips that scale.
You think so.
I think it's, you know how it is.
It's not just about athletic ability.
He's a culture changer.
Tom walks in.
He'll elevate everyone, but he has not elevated everyone's game thus far.
You know what's crazy, though, is that they're 10 and 2.
I don't care they beat, you know, teams that weren't that good.
They're still 10 and 2.
I'm not, yeah.
Yeah, you know, so I'm not really, I'm not panicking about them right now.
By the way, Katz Will will be on Fox Sports Radio, Sunday mornings 9 to 11 with Mike Harmon on Fox Sports Radio.
Okay, by the way, let's give us one wine on the way out.
You're a fledgling wine sommelier.
Pino Noir you like?
Listen, this is a really good plug.
I just bought four wines from Intercept.
Charles Woodson's wine.
You like him?
I just bought it.
I don't know.
I just bought it.
That's a great name.
Yeah, it's called Intercept.
He has a Purnoire.
He has a red blend.
He has a Chardonnay and a cap.
And I just, I literally, right before I came here, I just purchased all four.
I'm going to check them out.
20 bucks a bottle, not bad.
Fox Sports Radio.

15 minutes Peter Schroger stops by, Mr. Information, dude.
Schroger comes by.
We got Jason Garrett information.
We got Ron Rivera situation going on.
I will tell you this, again, you and I are both.
We don't like firing middle of the season,
but I do think there's a competitive thing.
You know, get Rivera out.
Let everybody know all the agents know, blah, blah, blah, blah.
It's funny because everybody likes Pat Schumer.
I don't think he has any presents.
Pat Schumer's not working with the Giants.
I don't think it's working at all.
And it's funny because at the beginning of the year,
nobody talked about Pat Schumer being in.
trouble. And everybody talked about Adam Gase is a little crazy. But in New York, I feel much better
right now about the Jets with Joe Douglas, the GM. Darnald's played actually very well lately.
Gase, when he listens to Darnold, they seem to get along. New York, New York football,
the Giants are a gold standard franchise. I think they may boot Shermer. I mean, I don't really
know what option you have at this point. I mean, they're losing big. This season's been a disaster.
Like double-digit losses.
How many have they lost in a roll?
It just feels like week after a week, it's a bad loss in New York.
And unlike the Jets, they don't have the injury excuse.
Like the Jets at the beginning of the season when Darnold got sick.
It was like, okay, well, we can't evaluate this season for the Jets.
The Giants don't really have a building excuse like that.
Like Daniel Jones should be taking steps up every week.
So we're going to have some coaching changes, folks.
And Peter Schreger will stop by also Marcellus Wiley at the end of our show.
He's always a fascinating guest.
Let's start with this.
Yesterday on the radio in Dallas,
Troy Aikman, who's the greatest Dallas quarterback that's ever played,
and that's saying something because Roger Stalbeck's pretty darn good.
And he stated the obvious about the Dallas Cowboys,
things are messy right now in Big D.
For 10 years, he's focused on Tuesday that we can possibly have,
and that's been his messaging throughout,
and the owner's talking about getting on a run and winning the Super Bowl.
You've got a head coach who comes out and says,
we're going to evaluate the kicker,
and then the front office says right after that
that they weren't evaluating the kicker.
Well, he trickles down.
So I think there's a lot of factors that have played into this.
Coaching obviously hasn't been.
Players haven't played great.
But the front office hasn't been great
in allowing the head coach to do his job either.
And Troy really touches on something.
Dallas has a structural deficiency.
The owner's the GM.
The owner won't give full control to the coach.
And the owner speaks publicly on Sundays after games
and Mondays in the morning.
Dallas has structural deficiencies, not talent deficiencies.
It's the NFL, I get it.
We blame the coach and we blame the quarterback.
I'm going to say something now, and your first reaction is going to be you're crazy.
But hear me out on this.
Name the two teams in this league right now that are super talented.
We know they're talented, but they're massively underachieving.
The Dallas Cowboys and the Cleveland Browns.
There is no disputing that.
Those are the two chargers maybe.
But they've done studies in America for years, and it's sad, but it's true.
that taller or more attractive people make more money.
Just the way the game works.
They walk into a room.
Ooh, ah.
Dallas is tall and good looking,
and they have some money,
and they've had previous success.
And so that sort of glosses over all their issues.
Cleveland, the Browns are short.
They don't have a lot of money.
They're kind of disheveled.
They've never had previous success or had real money.
And so we call them losers.
You do realize they're mostly the same franchise.
One's just tall, good-looking, and has a little bit of cash.
We always want to blame the coach and the quarterback.
But it was this year, Tony Romo said something.
It may have been on CBS, and it may have been on a radio show,
but I read it somewhere in the last six months, and he said,
you know, there's never been a bad owner to win a Super Bowl.
Bulls struggle to find an offensive identity,
even though they're offensive guys.
One guy quarterbacked at Alabama, Jason's like an Ivy League guy.
So, you know, it's funny about this.
Dallas is the big, tall, attractive, has money
and a little bit of previous success.
All right, so the college football playoff
rankings came out last night. It's fairly clear in college football this year. There are three
great teams and then a seat filler. The three great teams are Ohio State, Clemson and LSU. Last
night they put Georgia four, but they'll lose to LSU, and that means Utah will make it in over
Oklahoma. And I'm okay with that because I've seen Oklahoma three times in this playoff and they
never won. In fact, the Big 12s never won a single game in this playoff. The only major
conference that can say that. Let me say it again. Oklahoma's
0 and 3 and the Big 12 has never
ever won a game in this playoff. Pack 12 has.
ACC Cs won titles. SECs won a lot. Big 12,
Big Zero Burger.
And you can call it a bias, but I would call it an
assumption. I would vote in Utah over Oklahoma
if they both win their conference championship. Go ahead.
Call it an agenda. Call it a bias.
So when the daughter and the son go out to the movies, they give the money to the daughter.
that's not an agenda nor is it a bias.
It is an assumption based on history.
And college football demands that I assume.
Oh, yes, they do.
They have a preseason ranking and nobody's played a game.
So I'm going to assume Clemson's going to be great,
even though they lost three NFL offensive linemen,
but they do have the quarterback, they do have a great coach,
they have a great defensive coordinator, they have some skill people.
So I put Clemson number one.
And many people put Ohio State number one.
number one, and people put Oklahoma number one, and people put Alabama number one, all based
exclusively on assumption.
That's not bias.
It is looking at history.
And I watch the Big 12 every weekend.
The games are 56 to 49 and 49 to 39, and their shootouts.
It's mostly Oklahoma and eye rolling with the Big 12.
They don't play defense.
And when Texas is weak and now they are, and TCU is good, not special, it's a very
weak conference with one.
really good team, but I've seen that team three times in the
playoff, and I'm going to assume, based on how they played
then and how they play now and the conference they're in that's
never changed, they wouldn't be able to stop a nosebleed.
They'll line up and smack you right in the mouth.
there, Wisconsin, with a little more NFL talent on the defensive side.
So I'd put Utah in.
That's not to say that Utah is going to beat Ohio State or LSU or Clemson.
They won't, but they'll punch them right in the mouth.
It'll be a fist fight in the alley.
You all think it's bias.
It's not biased.
In the NFL, I have a playoff system.
You earn your way in and then 12 teams fight for a title.
In college football, we vote.
And we vote based on.
assumptions.
So if you're giving me Utah and Oklahoma
and they both win their conference
championships games and both
have an ugly loss and they have
one common opponent, UCLA,
I'm certainly not going to look at the common
opponent and say, well, he beat him by this and he beat him by
that. Utah's got, I think, 11
wins. I think like nine have been blowouts.
They got an ugly loss and one
close game. Mostly looks like
Oklahoma. But I've seen Oklahoma
in this game three times,
in this play. And I've seen the Big 12.
because I've got eyes and the television set at home,
and the games are shootouts,
and nobody can tackle,
and it's flag football with helmets,
and I'm okay, not assuming,
or actually assuming,
that won't be able to stop.
Three of the best college offenses I've ever seen.
Ohio State's best offense ever,
LSU's best offense ever,
and the best college quarterback I've seen Trevor Lawrence in 20 years.
Yes, I'm going to assume the Big 12 can't stop anyone.
and that's why college football is fun and we argue
and there's not much to argue about in the NFL
because New England won the Super Bowl over the Rams
and we all watched it.
The big argument in the entire NFL playoffs was
Saints got a bad call.
Think about that.
A month of NFL playoffs, one argument.
Didn't like that call in the Superdome.
College football is all about arguing,
all about urgency, assumptions, history, and arguing.
And I'm okay with that.
And I'm okay with Utah getting in.
over Oklahoma.
Be sure to catch live editions of the herd weekdays in noon Eastern 9 a.m. Pacific on Fox Sports
Radio, FS1 and the IHeart Radio app.
Congratulations to Big Noon kickoff.
On Saturday, Big Noon Kickoff live from Ann Arbor had nearly 2.8 million viewers.
They were the most watched college football show from 11 Eastern time to kick off.
And it's the show's best ever viewership.
Oh, that's interesting.
Other place had one on for like.
25 years. We walk in first year,
pal. Pretty amazing. Congratulations.
Yeah, it's a good show.
That's a good show. We're doing an amazing job, and it looks great.
Looks fantastic.
Don't be the guy in the room with a long, sloppy looking on Tucker shirt.
Go to untucka.com.
GQ calls a perfection.
80 retail locations, 20% off.
A lot of NFL stuff going on.
Ron Revere is really good. Riverboat Ron's really good.
By the way, he thanked the media on his Twitter account today.
Thank you. You were critical of me.
I always respected you.
Guys, this is all class, right?
Let's go via the Coward Global Satellite Network to my information guy, guy I love and trust.
Peter Schroger, good morning football on the NFL network.
Let's start.
I want to talk about David Tapper, the guy who owns Carolina now.
So we don't know much about him.
He's been there a year.
He made some changes on the operation side.
Just tell the audience, because you hear a lot of rumors and what kind of guy is he?
He's like a hedge fund guy.
He got rid of Ron Rivera.
I'm not sure I would have done that.
I like Ron a lot.
So who is this guy that owns Carolina?
I find Tepper to be the most fascinating figure, maybe in the entire NFL right now.
He's not only a hedge fund guy, Colin, he's viewed as maybe the most successful hedge fund manager in the history of American finance.
Took over a company Appaloosa, his own hedge fund, left Goldman Sachs where, you know, guys like Jim Kramer from Mad Money.
He was the mentor to Jim Kramer and immediately built a hedge fund where they were banking $20 billion a year.
So the financial crisis happens in 2007.
Everyone flees.
he doubles down and says, I'm going to trust that the government's not going to let us fail
and ends up buying just a bunch of different regional banks and acquiring all these different
assets when everyone else left, and they were up 150 percent the next year.
So he is a visionary, and he was also a minority owner of the Steelers.
So when the Panthers had to get rid of Jerry Richardson, they interviewed a bunch of guys
in the league, who's going to be the next owner?
And he blew everyone away and said, I'm in.
Not only am I in, I'm going to buy him for $3 billion, but I'm going to play an aggressive
role here.
So instead of being passive, said, I'm going to let everything go and see, cleaned out the business side,
but then watched the Panthers on the field this year and was very upfront with Ron Rivera and said,
I'm not going to keep you twisting in the wind.
We're not bringing you back next year.
I'm going to look you in the eye and tell you, we're letting you go.
But I also want to give you the opportunity to have a press conference on the way out
and get a head start preparing for your next job because you will get another job.
It was actually as seamless a firing of a head coach, I can imagine.
Both sides seem okay.
I spoke to Rivera last line on the phone.
he seems fine with it and he's excited for his next job.
He wants to coach again and he wants to do it fast.
Yeah, I was going to say, I think he's a great fit for the New York Giants.
If they let go to Pat Schumer, who I don't think has much of a presence,
they're losing and they're losing ugly.
Nobody cares it seemingly in New York.
Giants, Ron Rivera, make any sense to you?
It makes a ton of sense.
He makes a ton of sense in any market that a team has talent on the field but seems
undisciplined.
So I'm not in the business of firing coaches.
It's not my thing.
I don't ever like saying, well, this guy's on the hot seat.
If you look around the league and you look at teams that look undisciplined, that have great talent on the roster, and that just need to be shaped up, because that's what Rivera does.
He came in for a two-and-14 team in Carolina, and two years later, they won a division title, then won the next two-division titles.
So he's in there to get things in order, and not only a beloved coach, but also a beloved guy in the building, he will bring you order.
He's a military man, and he comes from a long tradition of Andy Reid coaches, where these guys seemingly come in and they make you a professional team.
Again, I'm not going to name teams that I think coaches are going to be on the way out.
But if you think about certain NFL teams that need that, he definitely fits the bill.
Jim Harbaugh to Carolina, you buy the rumors at all?
You think that makes any sense?
I don't.
I don't think that Tepper is looking to bring in a guy who's done it his way 12 different places
and has burned like a star and then burned out with those players.
I think Tepper's looking to go young.
I think Tepper is looking to go different.
And I think bringing in Harbaugh, you're going my way or the highway.
And that's just not going to work with an owner who's looking to go innovative,
and to go zig to the rest of the NFL Zag.
So do I have a list of names right now?
I would say if I'm David Tepper
and I'm looking at what he is interested in,
analytics, new age thinking,
an offensive-minded coach who can potentially work with Cam Newton
or whoever their quarterback is next year.
I don't see Jim Harbaugh, who has coached at all these different schools
and has burned out with a lot of these different players
after a few years and is currently coming off of Michigan five years
that I don't think they're actually pushing him out the door.
I don't think they're going to be the team
that writes a blank check for Jim Harbaugh.
I just don't see it.
What is the, I've said this, for years I've said this.
Sometimes sports move into you, sometimes they move out of you.
Russell Westbrook's great, but now all the league wants from its guards, can you shoot threes?
He does everything but shoot threes.
Cam's talented.
He's the Westbrook of the NFL, but the NFL now wants you to complete 69% of your throws.
He's an athlete who's kind of erratic with accuracy.
I think the sport's kind of moving away from him, but I do think there's a market for
like Westbrook landed in Houston.
He sells tickets.
He's fascinating.
Cam's kind of fascinating.
What's the market places you think it would work?
Healthy Cam is fascinating.
And he hasn't been that guy for three years.
He's got to go through foot surgery.
He might not be healthy to even walk until March.
Like, that's the big issue here.
We're all looking at Cam from that 2015 lens.
This is 2019.
And by the time he steps on the field next, it'll be 2020.
He's not the guy he was.
So what guy will he be?
I don't know.
But I do think this, at $19 million, which what is he is making next year for the Carolina Panthers,
is it not worth Carolina to at least talk to the new coach, whoever it is and say,
for one more year, is it worth at least waiting to see what kind of version of Cam we get back?
I'm not sure he's out the door just yet.
I do think it is a fascinating second chapter to his career.
Can he be a reliable player in this league?
I think so.
Is he ever going to be the guy that he was when he won his MVP season with 15 and 1?
it's really hard to believe, especially when he's coming off of foot surgery and hasn't played in close to 18 months by the time,
at his 100% based on when we see him next.
I don't know if there's anything new to say on Jason Garrett.
I think if he wins out and won a playoff game, he'd stay, and everybody assumes it's Lincoln Riley.
I mean, when you talk to your sources around the league, are there names we're not hearing?
Again, I assume if he can win out, which is hard, but I think he'll win that game in Philly.
I do.
The Eagles are kind of a mess and they're all banged up.
Is there anything new on the Cowboys front in your opinion?
Here's the thing.
If they win that game against the Eagles and they go seven and nine and they get a home playoff game and they beat the Vikings or they beat the 49ers,
anything short of a Super Bowl, I don't see how you can look to the fans after what's been said in the media and reading the tea leaves that he's back as coach next year.
So it's kind of an untenable situation for Garrett unless he actually does have them hoisting a Lombardi trophy,
which seems very hard to believe right now.
The Cowboys' job becomes curious, though, because you've mentioned it all.
morning long, Colin, that, hey, you go to maybe a Carolina or you go to Redskins or a Giants
or wherever else these jobs are Jacksonville, wherever these jobs might be opening up,
and you kind of have a blank slate.
With the Cowboys, you know you're really the coach that Jerry Jones has picked, and you're
playing under Jerry Jones's rules.
So does Lincoln Riley, who's coached the last two Heisman Trophy winners and the last
two number one overall picks, is that his dream job to leave Oklahoma to go be under Jerry
Jones, maybe we haven't heard that from Lincoln Riley's side, and I think he's going to have
several suitors. So I'm not sure the Cowboys job, as wonderful as that star in your helmet is,
and as amazing as those facilities are, I'm not sure that job is what guys are leaving for
as their number one destination. In fact, I'm not sure it is the number one destination when all
these jobs are open and available, and it's all said and done. I generally don't buy into rumors
like this, but let's just have fun for a second. Yeah, let's go. We both love Brady and
Belichick. In 19 years, Belichick has drafted one skill player that's been a pro bowler. That's amazing.
Gronk. Can't count Matt Slater. He's a special teams guy. So every great dynasty and every genius,
Elon Musk is a genius, but he's got a hole. He's a little crazy. Belichick's a genius. He's
not great drafting skill people. He is shown in 19 years. It's not his specialty. Linebackers,
O-line, outsourcing his wide receivers that are already in the NFL, fine.
When you hear these rumors about Brady selling his house, Brady going to Los Angeles,
there's part of me that thinks Tom's going to look at Baltimore and Kansas City.
They're not getting to the Super Bowl.
And Tom's like, I'm 42.
I got a place in L.A.
I'm going to go give the chargers a run.
And I don't want you to put you in a bad spot here.
But there is part of me here that thinks he's a little worn out from rookie receivers,
fifth round guys, a quarterback Edelman, they turn into a.
receiver. I don't think it's nuts that if Brady got bounced, he'd sniff a little. Is that crazy?
Look, I don't think there's any doubt that Brady's a little frustrated with the current roster
and the situation and how these guys are playing at the skill positions. And he's looking around
at every other team has 14 different receivers who can run a 4-2-40. And he's throwing to undrafted
guys who played quarterback last year. But I would say this. I'd be slow to break up the Belichick and
Brady thing. And I would also be slow to not think that Belichick's a little frustrated with the
lack of weapons also. I think the Antonio Brown thing didn't come necessarily from Tom Brady, get
rid of Antonio Brown. And I'm not necessarily thinking it was from Belichick either. So I would be
weary to say that he's looking at Belichick and saying, come on, it's more, hey, what can we do
to get with this group and get him there to the next level? Because, yeah, you saw what he was saying
on the sideline on Sunday night. He wasn't happy. I mean, that's as vocal and as visible as we've
seen him since maybe he and Josh McDaniels got in those things on the sidelines way back.
But the Chargers deal, I wouldn't put him in another uniform just yet.
I would not put him in another uniform yes yet.
I would say, let's wait it out and let's see what happens here.
Win or lose.
I can't imagine Brady saying, okay, I'm so angry about the current roster situation that I'm
going to go open up the L.A. Chargers new stadium and be the tenant to what the Rams
are building so that I can explore production deals with Mike Williams as much.
my receiver. It's not like the Chargers roster.
Like, this would be a serious
decision if Brady was to go
name it style with the Rams. Okay. Well, you
are a reporter. I'm just a guy
giving them. Hey, it's fun to fodder.
I don't think it's not going to happen.
I just would say I would be weary of
imagining Tom Brady in a
Chargers uniform. All right. That's fair enough.
Fox NFL reporter,
our buddy on the NFL kickoff show on Sunday, too.
We love him. Peter Shregor, good talking to you.
I will see you on Sunday. And yes,
that Fox NFL kickoff show that we have is fun.
But so is the Saturday morning show,
which is kicking butt.
Good stuff from the college football guys.
Thank you, Shreg.
Shreg's noticing that, too, Joy.
You notice that?
Things are working here.
They are working.
2.8 million viewers.
You know what I'm rooting for?
Brady just signs with the Chargers.
He moves to Manhattan Beach.
So you guys can be neighbors?
Yeah, mostly.
Listen, well, I can't have my agendas.
Whole world's gotten it.
I think you and Tom would get along.
I think he's a little busy.
He probably has a few things to do, yeah.
Yeah, yeah.
Joy with the news.
No, no, no, no, no.
Turn on the news.
This is the herd line news.
All right, so the Cowboys are barely hanging on to the top spot in the NFC East.
The team is 6 and 6 after dropping three of their last four games.
And Dak Prescott says it's the failure that motivates him more than anything else.
He said, when I lose, that's what pisses me off.
That's what makes me go.
That's what keeps me going.
I hate losing more than I like winning, to be honest.
A win is like, sure, I'm supposed to do that.
Prepared my ass off, but why wouldn't I do that?
Then when I lose, why, why?
It's a battle.
How do I get better?
I totally agree with that.
Jerry Tarkhanian told me that when I was a young reporter.
He goes, I can't remember the wins.
He goes, I remember every loss.
That's kind of how I feel about gambling.
Like sports gambling or like poker or something?
Any kind of gambling, yes.
Like winning is great.
It's cool.
But losing, like the emotion of losing is so much.
more dramatic than the satisfaction
of winning. So you don't gamble much?
I wouldn't say that. It keeps me from gambling.
But like in general, I try to be more
controlled from it because like I don't want to deal
with being angry at it. And I do
understand where he's coming from. Like a win,
when you have the mentality that you are a winner, when you win, that's what you're
supposed to do. You're not supposed to lose. We're supposed to come out
and do a good show. Right. But a bad show,
you couldn't sleep that night.
Correct. Exactly. Yes. Like when I make a mistake,
it bothers me much more than when I
I've never had a perfect show, but...
I haven't had a perfect segment.
I've told me what that.
It's true, though.
28 years never had a perfect segment.
It's true, though, because you can't.
You can't.
But I understand what he's saying.
That said, this speaks more to
the intangibles that DAC has.
That's exactly right. This is how winners think.
Exactly.
This is how successful people think.
That's why I like Dak.
And their remaining schedule is kind of interesting.
They're at the Bears.
When Thursday.
Tomorrow, by the way, Joy, tomorrow.
Yes.
I cannot.
I have already ordered the soup and the sweaters for that.
It's a soup and sweater night at the
Coward House.
About three times a year, I have a soup and sweater party.
We're doing it tomorrow, Dallas at Chicago.
Cannot wait.
That is, how lucky have we been at Fox on our Thursday games?
Amazing.
Unbold.
We have been so lucky.
Killing Big Noon Saturday.
Fox in a Bill Sunday.
Look, we're living a good life over here.
What kind of sweaters?
Generic, but I put a sweater on.
I open the door with the dogs, go in and out.
It's kind of a chilly night.
Dogs go in and out.
Poor cocktail.
That's what the sweaters are for.
Soup, cocktails.
What kind of soup are we doing?
No, no, no.
Whatever happens.
I have a nice corn chowder.
Oh, delicious.
I can't do cream.
I'll probably do something vegetable.
Wife's vegan, I'm clearly not.
Is anyone else going to the party?
No, it's just me.
It's just your own personal...
Yeah, I don't think you need more than...
Soup and the dog.
Soup sweater.
I'm trying to think of a cocktail that starts with an S.
How about straight vodka?
Or straight, something.
So Cam News spent his entire career with Ron Rivera and Carolina.
the news broke that Rivera was fired.
Cam took to Instagram to thank his former coach.
He said, we'll be forever grateful because of the impact you had in my life.
Thank you for giving me an opportunity.
Thank you for believing in me.
I can go on and on.
But most importantly, thank you for allowing me to be me.
This one hurt deep.
I got a question.
How did Cam do that in his Instagram, the lettering?
I have to be honest with you.
This is Cam always writes in that font.
How does he do that?
I don't know.
I'm new to Instagram.
I'm pretty good with the internet.
Did he do the picture too?
Someone might have made that for him
So he has a team of Instagram people
Well you have a team of Instagram people
I have one guy that I do my Instagram and send it to it
No no no we have a team
We have a very strong team around here
But yeah
Cam's Instagram
It looks it's lit
It's cool
It looks turnt or whatever you guys say
Well it look at it it looks stylish
Yeah he does this font
I don't know how to do it
I think it's like a app you put it in
Why did you laugh at me when I said lit
I don't think we're saying that anymore
Okay
Nobody says lit
You have to run those things by Joy first
So nobody says lit?
I just found it
I think we'll say lit
But it's just it's not
It's not cool anymore
I said lit 30 times yesterday at the store
So lit's not cool anymore
Well it's never lit to say lit 30 times
But I mean I think we can still allow it
Well I'll allow it every once in a while
Would it be okay if the coer's
I mean you think lit and turn in the same sentence
is probably aggressive.
All right.
But you weren't inaccurate.
So there you go.
I used it properly.
You did.
You did.
Finally, Tua was projected to be a top draftic all year,
but his season ending hip injury might have affected his stock,
and he has until January 20th to make his decision
whether to declare for the draft or not.
And right now, he's still weighing his options.
He said, I'm still not too sure.
The risk, if I stay is obviously, do I get hurt again?
The reward is that I could come back and have another good year
like my sophomore year.
and elevate myself back to the very top of the draft.
If I leave, I think the risk is a little higher.
That risk would be how far do I drop?
To me, it's 50-50 between going in the first round
and possibly going in the second round.
This is horrible.
Just go for a minute.
This is bad advice.
GoPro. Period.
I don't, yeah, I see no.
I completely disagree.
The risk is much higher staying in college.
First of all, you go back to college.
You could get injured again,
which would essentially end your NFL career.
Do you think you have a bad injury narrative now?
What happens when you get another one?
I'm out.
Like, I'm not drafting you.
Yeah, that's an incredible.
That's an incredible risk.
Because right now, teams are basing their opinion on what you've already accomplished.
And there's a little injury fear.
There is some injury fear.
But they're not going to be able to evaluate you by the time the draft comes because
two is not going to be complete.
His recovery is not going to be complete.
His rehab isn't going to be complete in order for him to participate in the combine or draft workouts at 100% anyway.
So it's basically just going to be off interview.
and what the tape that you've already put out is.
And for someone like to a, I mean, a draft workout and the combine is not really going to affect his stock anyway.
They're going off of what they've already seen to begin with.
So it really doesn't matter.
It's just whether they feel like he's going to make a full recovery or not.
But to wait until next year, first of all, there's a whole group of new quarterbacks.
Some of who we don't are going to emerge.
Next year's quarterback.
Right.
Not this year.
No, next year.
So a year and a half from now, those two quarterbacks are all.
better than these quarterbacks.
And there could be more that level of.
Somebody always emerges.
Right. And what teams will need
quarterbacks by then? You have to consider that as well.
The risk is
all on staying in college.
Who cares if you fall? You're in a better
situation if you fall. Less pressure to
perform right away. If you go at the very top of the draft,
you're going to have to come in NFL ready.
I don't understand it.
Either do I. Joy with the news.
Well, that's the news.
And thanks for stopping by.
The herd line news.
By the way, Alabama doesn't have anybody behind Tua, so you know what they're pulling for.
They got nobody behind Tua.
Because that guy they got behind him, I saw him throw two pick sixes.
Tua is the best quarterback Alabama's ever had.
So there are people in Alabama telling him, you know, you need to come back.
Terrible advice.
He's already got a little bit of a blue check on the injury thing.
One more injury, people are out.
Like, they're like done.
And by the way, there's already a handful of teams that are like,
let's see how the surgery goes.
One more injury, you're done.
And by the way, in the SEC, you get hit a lot as a quarterback.
That's the toughest conference in the country.
So he's going to get popped, Georgia, Auburn, you know,
played in the Mountain West, you can avoid it, not there.
All right, Marcellus Wiley's around the corner.
Haven't had him on the show in a long time.
Best for last.
Can't wait to talk to him about some of this stuff,
Ron Rivera stuff and other stuff.
One more herd?
The herd streams 24 hours a day, seven days a week,
within the IHard Radio app.
Search heard to listen live or on demand whenever you'd like.
Marcelus Wiley played in the NFL for 10 years, a pro bowler.
Sociology degree from Columbia University from South Central L.A.,
strangely a clipper fan over a Laker fan.
Who can explain that?
So Tom Curran's a very good reporter in Boston.
Tom E. Curran, when he writes stuff I believe it.
It's a fascinating column today.
Go and read it about Brady.
that Tom Brady's now getting to the end.
Tired of taking pay cuts.
Tom's looking at these receivers.
He's got no tight end.
He's tired of taking pay cuts.
One pro bowler in 19 years,
Belichick has drafted at a skill position.
Grunk.
I'm not saying he's going to go,
but put yourself,
42, net worth 250 million.
I'm there.
Taking pay cuts.
I've got to tell you something, Marcel.
Yeah.
I'm not a big enough man.
I'd want on the way out,
I'd want $30 million.
Yeah.
There are details in that story right there without even having a chance to read it just yet.
The way you go in is the way you come out.
Don't forget that Tom Brady at one time was the highest paid quarterback at the position.
Then started to have the success, the team success, and realize, you know what?
Let's build around me.
And I'm going to buy into this organization.
And I remember this moment vividly when he took a pay cut with a direct effort to sign West Welker.
And remember what happened with West Walker?
They let him go.
They let him go.
And Tom Brady took a pay cut north of $2 million.
And I remember hearing some of the rumblings of, hey, can I get the money back or what are we going to do with those resources?
Oh, they're just gone and thin air.
And from that moment on, I think Tom Brady had to realize, look, if you don't do well by me, sooner or later this is going to catch up to you.
And I think this is the moment of truth.
By the way, I don't think there are a Super Bowl team this year.
I think Baltimore is better.
I think Kansas City is better.
I think the league is changing.
They outplayed Houston and lost because Houston's got a dynamic quarterback and great skill people.
I don't think they're a Super Bowl team.
Well, you know, December, Foxborough and January playoff football is always a different game and version of football, different seasons.
So what they're able to do, their mantra is we're not going to make mistakes and we're going to capitalize on your mistakes.
And if you look at this team when they come down to the stretch run, they're able to go out there and make sure they don't beat themselves.
So are you confident in the Houston team last year that lost 21 to 7 at home in the playoffs?
We don't know how they're going to respond in the playoffs.
We saw the Baltimore Ravens last year,
had to face the L.A. charges twice in three weeks,
including the loss in the playoffs where they didn't look like they belonged on the field in that situation.
So everyone has to take a leap in terms of maturation in the playoffs where New England,
they could rely on some of that experience.
The lights are not as right to them as a collective.
That may pay dividends.
Does it feel like to you, though, Kansas City?
They had some O-line issues, Marcellus, Tyree Kill injuries.
It kind of does feel like I watched them against the Raiders last week.
It's like we've kind of, you know, Baltimore's grabbed our attention.
So of the Niners, so of the Seahawks.
They're kind of laying in the weeds, Kansas City,
with that stinging close loss to New England.
You know, this weekend they play the Patriots.
Kansas City, New England, who do you like in Foxboro?
I still like New England.
Wow.
Yeah, look, now I think this is.
is going to be one of those self-correct games where Kansas City comes out there,
plays well, loses a close game. But let's go back to when the Giants lost that close matchup
at the end of the season, when they were a team going to the playoffs, get to see that same
team in the Super Bowl. That was a Giants Patriots. Yeah, exactly.
Week 17, New York lost in New England. Exactly. I think that's the dynamic we're seeing
right here with Kansas City Chiefs. Obviously, they have confidence against New England.
They should have won that game last year, D. Ford, offsides on the interception,
play one possession away from beating the New England Patriots last year in the
AFC championship game.
So I don't think they win this week, but I think it's a self-correct game setting them
up for future success.
11 years you played 10 years in the NFL, a pro bowl, or four different teams, including
the Cowboys.
So when the owner talks about the coach and when there's rumors about the coach and you're
six and six with great players and they're talking coach, do you think there's a chance
that Cowboy players now are having these discussions over a beer at home?
walking back to the practice field about will they splinter off from Jason Garrett?
You know that Billy, there's an old saying in baseball.
You have 25 players, you know, 10 hate you, 10 love you,
keep the five undecided away from the guys that hate you.
Do you think the Cowboys implode in this moment or elevate?
I think they elevate, but I also think that they're experienced in this moment.
Look, I go back to 2004 when I was a cowboy,
when there were terms thrown around, are you a Jerry guy or you a Bill Parcell's guy?
Really?
So this is nothing new if you're a Dallas cowboy.
And it's unfortunate because you're getting mixed messages.
You're having an owner who has an overview of winning the Super Bowl with a coach who's sitting there talking about the simple measures of winning the next play and winning the next game.
So you can't serve two gods.
And you think about it, you're trying to appease what Jerry is thinking, which is winning a Super Bowl.
But you have to remember the methodical approach you need to take as a football player, what your coach is preaching.
So I think that's the mixed messaging that this always existed as a Dallas cowboy.
And it's really undermined him.
I think Troy Aikman spoke to this.
Yeah.
I want to shift to Cam Newton.
I've never been a huge Cam fan.
Your co-host over there, Jason Whitlock and I used to argue about this.
Cam feels distracted to me.
I got a lot of injuries.
The league is now demanding precision throwing.
That's not really his game.
He's the Westbrook of the NFL.
The one thing the league asks is, can you shoot?
Russell can't.
Can't do everything else great.
What is the market?
for Cam.
He won't even hit the market.
I think right now,
I think he's going to stay,
obviously, at the contract that he's under $19 million next year.
Pretty.
That's a good bargain.
That's a bargain.
You talk about a potential franchise quarterback going forward.
We know that he has been,
but with the surgery to the Liz Frank injury,
I think that's going to do wonders for Cam Newton.
First of all, the rehab process,
I tell every single guy,
especially when you're playing football.
If you're going to go out there and worry about picking up your kids,
try and rehab.
If you're trying to pick up linebackers,
go ahead and get the surgery, fix it.
Go to the core of this issue, fix it, do the rehab after that,
and you'll be better served forward.
So Cam Newton, in terms of what his value is,
we're seeing the buy-in,
we're seeing the organizational support
that comes from the top down in Baltimore
and the success is paying on the football field with Lamar Jackson.
I think the same thing is starting to brew out there in Carolina.
David Tepper, now firing Ron Rivera.
I think now organizational support for one year,
on a bargain contract, let's buy into
Cam Newton and see what we have. Let me ask you something.
Harbaugh's 44, 19, and one as an NFL coach.
You have to go to George Hallis to find that.
He's worked everywhere but burned out people.
You own an NFL team.
Would you hire him?
I'm not saying Carolina.
It's about seven openings a year. Washington.
Would you hire Harbaugh?
I would. Look, it was funny
what made Harbaugh attractive at the collegiate level
was the fact that everyone thought that the turnover were recruiting in a four-year cycle,
his message wouldn't get lost or become white noise, right?
That's right.
And he's had success.
Look, he's a top 10 coach in college at the same time,
having won against Ohio State or obviously the national championship.
But if you look at him at the pro ranks,
what the buy-in that he had before with Bill Roman,
what they had in San Francisco in those instant results,
what a quarterback that most people didn't know what to do with in Colin Kaepernick
and the situation they had would have,
with Alex Smith, who at that time was labeled a bust and not living up to his billing.
Jim Harbaugh made all of that a curse.
So can he do that again at the NFL level?
Certainly.
But I think the controls, the atmosphere, the organizational support, that's the key to this.
Now, he wouldn't work in Dallas.
No, hell no, not at all.
Because Jerry Jones wants to credit.
But what about Cleveland?
It feels like that's a place except that's going to.
to be almost a 180 in terms of what the, what the mindset is from this year. Obviously, Freddie
Kitchens, I think we termed them, not the head coach, but the homeboy, LeVar Arrington, call him that.
You have to have a different authority figure there, and that's going to be shocking to a lot of
those players that were drafted and brought into a culture that now is going to take a 180. He's the
guy to lead it, but will the guys follow it? Yeah, I like, you know, Whitlock, you should listen to
Marcellus on Harbaugh. He's got a lot of interesting things.
be nice to get a little listen to this guy is pretty sharp.
Congrats on all your success.
Speak for yourself.
Let's hear it from Marcel.
He's going to walk over to that set right over there in a couple of minutes.
Good stuff.
Thursday tomorrow's Cowboys, Bears.
