Starting point is 00:00:00 This is an I-Heart podcast. Guaranteed Human. Another podcast from some SNL, late-night comedy guy, not quite. Unhumor me with Robert Smygel and friends. Me and hilarious guests from Bob Odenkirk to David Letterman help make you funnier. This week, my guest, SNL's Mikey Day and head writer, Streeter Seidel, help an a cappella band with their between songs banter.
Starting point is 00:00:23 Where does your group perform? We do some retirement homes. Those people are starving for banter. Listen to humor me with Robert Smigel and friends on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Imagine an Olympics where doping is not only legal, but encouraged. It's the enhanced games. Some call it grotesque.
Starting point is 00:00:42 Others say it's unleashing human potential. Either way, the podcast's Superhuman documented it all, embedded in the games and with the athletes for a full year. Within probably 10 days, I'd put on 10 pounds. I was having trouble stopping the muscle growth. Listen to Superhuman on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Starting point is 00:02:01 Here we go. It is a Thursday. We are live in Los Angeles. It's the herd wherever you may be. And however, you may be watching or listening. Thanks for making us part of your day tonight. Niners, probably the best roster in the league. Maybe the best team takes on the Giants that are injury ravaged.
Starting point is 00:02:21 It should be a blowout. The great ones can do it without all their starters. Good luck to Daniel Jones tonight on the road. Jay Mack is joining. us one hour from now. The great Greg CoSell, if you bet football, fantasy football, just want to get smarter in football. Greg CoSell, 15-minute meat sandwich breaks down what we saw last week, what to expect this week. If you love football, bet it fantasy. He's the guy that's in one hour from now. So the Chicago thing, it was started to unravel when we left our show yesterday. The Bears, Jason.
Starting point is 00:02:51 It just, it's, there's this, it was not good and it appears to be getting worse. Is that fair? I would say that's fair. Yes. Things are trending poorly. for the Chicago Bears and Justin Fields. Okay, so there are five stages of failing quarterbacks in the NFL. It usually goes in stages. So the five stages of a failing quarterback, it starts with hype, hype and expectations. So people are unrealistic. Oh, he's going to be this.
Starting point is 00:03:18 He's going to be that. So it always starts with hype. Number two, for failed quarterbacks, it's inconsistent. There's flashes of brilliance, flashes of talent, but it's just inconsistent. Three, blame him or not, there's mounting losses. You're just not winning enough games. Justin Fields is 5 and 22. Then there's media criticism or fan criticism or both.
Starting point is 00:03:40 Sometimes the fans start it. Sometimes the media do. But everybody's getting banged on talk radio. Everybody's getting bang. The players are reading about it. And then the fifth stage is blame. And that's where we are. Blames the final stage.
Starting point is 00:03:53 All right. So we're through one through four. Now we're into blame. And here was yesterday, Justin Feast. during a press conference, right? There was this press conference and a lot of people didn't like what he said. Here it is. I felt like, you know, I wasn't necessarily playing my game.
Starting point is 00:04:08 I felt like I was kind of robotic and, you know, not just, not playing like myself. So, you know, my goal this week is just to, you know, say effort and just go out there and, you know, play football, how I know how to play football. When you say thinking less, what do you think was causing you to think so much, maybe think too much? You know, could be, you know, coaching. Now, in America today, you're not allowed to have a wrong word or a wrong sentence. That's not the end of the world to me. He's a kid. You're in front of the media.
Starting point is 00:04:40 They ask questions. It's remarkable. The media would never demand they be perfect, but we always demand young kids are perfect. So that didn't do a ton for me, but then he had to answer it later because everybody said, oh, a guy's blaming the coaches. So here he was later. I'm not blaming anything on the coaches. I'm never going to blame anything on the coaches,
Starting point is 00:04:57 never going to blame anything on my teammates. I will take whatever happens in the game, I will take all the blame. I don't care. It's a drop pass. It should have been a pass. Put it on me. I need to play better.
Starting point is 00:05:08 That's it. Point blank. That's what I should have said. So everybody liked that one better. I think the bigger issue, beyond words and nobody's perfect, it's okay. People say things and then regret it. It's okay.
Starting point is 00:05:21 I think the bigger issue is there is mounting evidence he's maybe not a franchise quarterback. He holds the ball way too long. Many of his sacks, in fact, by a mile in the NFL, he leads the NFL since he got into it. Sacks with four plus seconds in the pocket. His career passer rating is under 80. He's what it is. They created a passer rating so we can kind of make these broad kind of, you know, opinions on how good's quarterback play. They count a lot of different things. His is low. And he doesn't appear to be improving. So then you have to go deep, deep, deep, deep in the numbers. Well, is he good in the fourth quarter? Nope, it's his lowest passer rating, 61 to 9, 61.9. So he's not good late in
Starting point is 00:06:05 games. You need great quarterbacks or good late in games. Mahomes, Brady. Okay, but maybe he's good, like Russell Wilson. He's good on script. No, his first quarter passer ratings, not good either. That's his second lowest passer rating. Not good early on script, not good late. There's no circumstance he's excelling. I even went this morning and looked, okay, what's his passer rating when he leads? So I've been very critical of Baker Mayfield, but I always said Baker leading with a run game was good. Baker Mayfield's career passer rating when leading a game is 94. Mack Jones, you guys don't like him.
Starting point is 00:06:42 His career passer rating when leading is 100. Justin Fields is 62, two touchdown seven picks. Not good early, not good late. Not good leading. Now, I think the running Justin Fields is the best Justin Fields, and I'm not giving up all hope. Who knows what happens in Kansas City? For the record, 50% of first round quarterbacks do not work. That's first round quarterbacks.
Starting point is 00:07:09 In his draft class, Zach Wilson appears to be a miss. Trey Lance appears to be a miss. Mack Jones is successful, but a lot of people are very critical of him. The good news is for the Chicago Bears, it is a great college college. quarterback draft class. You have two potential top eight, ten picks. Aaron Rogers is out of the division.
Starting point is 00:07:32 So there's positive news for the franchise. For Justin Fields, you got to go play better and win games. There is mounting evidence. He holds the ball too long. Translation. Probably doesn't see the field great. It does feel a lot like Zach Wilson. Got the arm, got the athletic ability, some college success.
Starting point is 00:07:48 Why isn't it working? Both have defensive coaches. You can blame offensive coordinators. Go ahead. but generally speaking, it's five stages. It's hype, it's inconsistency, it's mounting losses. Here comes the heat from fans and media, and then it's blame. Yesterday felt a little bit like blame. Again, let's not crush the kid because he said it could be a little coaching.
Starting point is 00:08:11 For the record, I don't know why last week they wouldn't let him run. That is on coaching. In fairness to Justin Fields, I would say that's coaching. They obviously told him not to run because he's a good runner. All right, here's a second story. Now, listen, I'm not, I don't even know what a great parent is. Who knows? You know, I think I tend to think that kids do a lot more work than the parents.
Starting point is 00:08:35 I remember years ago, Bobby Knight used to brag about my kids go to class and everybody would be, oh, Bobby Knight's kids go to class and Bobby Knight, his kids go to class, well, shouldn't we give the kids the credit for going to class? I mean, most like to go to class, right? Not every college athlete's just trying to skip out on class. Like going to class is part of the college experience. And I always think, you know, however your kids, people love to brag about their kids,
Starting point is 00:08:57 but sometimes, you know, I would say 90% of what kids end up being is based on kids, their choices. Parents can certainly help, but it's hard as a great parent to correct some kids, even if you are perceived as a great parent. So the point being, Dion Sanders' dad, son Shadur Sanders, and in most cases, I don't think the dad should say,
Starting point is 00:09:19 stay in college, I think you should go where the draft experts tell you to go. And Chatur Sanders, to me, is a top 10 pick this year. But in this instance, it is a little different because Caleb Williams is number one. And Dion Sanders did an interview and he talked about the reality of this draft class. It's not about what I'm seeing from them. It's about a whole lot of other things. Teams, position, round, projection, all of that plays a role. Because now with NIL and who they are, shoot, you make just as much money here as you can there.
Starting point is 00:10:09 But Shador don't want to be too to nobody. He don't get down like that. So, you know, people are projecting him behind, you know, Kayla Willis and Caleb Williams is phenomenal. But Shaddao ain't no backseat riding. That's Taylor Rook's Bleacher Report. My takeaway on this is he's certainly talented enough to be a number one pick. He's not as good as Caleb Williams.
Starting point is 00:10:35 Is he better served just getting an insurance policy coming back and being the number one pick? But I don't know if that's right. Because the big money for quarterbacks, asked Patrick Mahomes, is in your second and third. contract, not your first. And also, again, take the injury out of it. That would be the worst case scenario. Here's the other advantage to coming out this year. So the ringer did a mock draft.
Starting point is 00:11:01 We don't know who's going to finish where. We do know Arizona's not very good. But if you look at Arizona's, or if you look at the ringers mock draft, the athletic, I'm sorry, the athletic. If you come out this year and you're the third quarterback taken, you'll likely, because the Colts aren't going to draft a quarterback, the Giants aren't going to draft a quarterback. It's very likely you'll go to Denver, Sean Payton, Minnesota, offensive coach, Justin Jefferson's stable organization, or the Jets, Aaron Rogers last year, and a completely loaded defense. Remember, Zach Wilson's done. They're drafting a left tackle or a quarterback, and quarterback's more important than left tackle.
Starting point is 00:11:46 Right? Aaron off an Achilles surgery. It's a left tackle or a quarterback. quarterback. If Sanders is there, they draft him. They would draft him. Both the tackles could be gone. So my point is, yes, he could be a number one pick next year. But do you think the worst team in the NFL the previous year is going to be better than Sean Payton, the Jets defense, Justin Jefferson and an offensive coach? The big money for all players in the NFL, especially quarterbacks, is your second or third contract. It's not your first. And okay, you can say, I was number one.
Starting point is 00:12:24 Just more pressure. Just a crappier roster. I mean, Andrew Luck would still be playing had he not gone to Indianapolis with a bad old line, a GM that whiffed, a coach that got fired, and bad protection. What if Andrew Luck would have gone ninth? 12th. So I go back and forth on this. I get the argument.
Starting point is 00:12:47 You can make money in NIL. That's true. I get the argument. He doesn't want to play second fiddle to Caleb Williams. I get all of that. So let's take the injury stuff out. That's worst case scenario. But don't we all agree on this that where you go is 90% of the game?
Starting point is 00:13:08 Isn't it? I mean, as good as Caleb Williams is. If I said to you, he failed. What would your number one reason be? He went to Arizona. Wouldn't be he's not talented enough. Joel Clat yesterday talked about Shadur Sanders and the possibility he would stay in school.
Starting point is 00:13:26 It's not as cut and dry as it used to be because of NIL. Right? So it's not just like, you have to go. The rookie contract is not out of this world. Dion's going to be there next year. So is Travis Hunter. So Shudor can think to himself, listen, I'm going to be with my dad and Travis and give this another year,
Starting point is 00:13:46 and there's every reason to believe that he could be the number one pick next year. By the way, you see the numbers of these broadcasts. We think of NIL like, oh, yeah, he can make a couple million bucks. I think Shadur might be able to make $10 million. So currently, according to the NIL calculators, wherever those are, Google, I bet, Shadour Sanders has the second highest, to Brony James, the second highest estimated earning potential NIL. Well, that's only going to grow. That's not going backwards.
Starting point is 00:14:21 He's yet to play USC or Oregon. A lot of the country is going to get introduced over and over and over. So it's really interesting. I go back and forth on this. The NIL issue does make me think there could be a kid every year. that stays in college. But I think this year, going 7, 8, 9, 10, 11,
Starting point is 00:14:47 I end up with Justin Jefferson and that offensive coach, stable organization in Minnesota, Sean Payton and Denver, Jerry Judy, Cortland Sutton, and Mims, the kid they just drafted, there are worst places to land. Or the Jets defense in a year behind Aaron Rogers. That's about as well as you can do as a top 10 pick.
Starting point is 00:15:08 That's about as well as you can do. Sean Payton and good receivers. The Jets defense. One of the best young receivers. Minnesota, Justin Jefferson, the best receiver in the league. Just stuff to think about. I don't have the answer, but it is, you know, it's an interesting conversation.
Starting point is 00:15:24 The NIL clouds all of it because you can make a lot of money. My point, though, if you come out, not this year, but the following year, well, if you go number one, you're still going to a bad roster. It's not like Kansas City is going to have the number one pick. They wouldn't take a quarterback anyway. I have a great parlay for you this weekend, thanks to Draft King Sportsbook. New users use the code heard when you download the app. All right, I'm going to go with a three dog parlay pick via Draft King Sportsbook.
Starting point is 00:15:52 All right, Chargers plus one of the Vikings. They have a better team. They're desperate, better roster. And I think this is the moment for the Chargers this season. Line in the sand. lose, they're thinking about a new coach. I think they win. They've had moments in both their losses.
Starting point is 00:16:10 Chargers win by a touchdown. Steelers plus three at the Raiders. Why? I think Pittsburgh's a better roster overall. After an ugly win and an epically bad performance by the O line, they'll hear about it from Tomlin and play inspired. Take the Steelers by a touchdown. And Rams plus one at the Bengals, Joe Burrell may not play,
Starting point is 00:16:31 and the Rams are the shock of the league. If you want to take the herd parlay, check out Draft King Sportsbook. New users use the code H-E-R-D-Hurd when you download the app. Chargers, Steelers, Rams. Like it, I love it. 21 plus in most eligible states, but age varies by jurisdiction. Eligibility restrictions apply. Gambling problem.
Starting point is 00:16:52 Call 1-800-Gambler. In New York. Call 8778-8-Hope-N-Y or text Hope-N-Y-4-67-369. See show notes for full details. Imagine an Olympics where doping is not only legal, but encouraged. It's the enhanced games. Some call it grotesque.
Starting point is 00:17:07 Others say it's unleashing human potential. Either way, the podcast's Superhuman documented it all, embedded in the games and with the athletes for a full year. Within probably 10 days, I'd put on 10 pounds. I was having trouble stopping the muscle growth. Listen to Superhuman on the I-Hard Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. A win is a win.
Starting point is 00:17:30 A win. A win is a win. Yep, that's me, Cliver Taylor the 4th. You might have seen the skits, the reactions, my journey from basketball to college football, or my career in sports media. Well, somewhere along the way, this platform became bigger than I ever imagined. And now I'm bringing all of that excitement to my brand new podcast, The Clifford Show. Starting point is 00:18:31 Do you remember when Diana Ross double-tapped Little Kim's boobs at the VMAs? Or when Kanye said that George Bush didn't like black people. I know what you're thinking. What the hell does George Bush got to do with Little Kim? Well, you can find out on the Look Back at it podcast. I'm Sam Jek. And I'm Alex English. Each episode, we pick a here, unpack what went down,
Starting point is 00:18:52 and try to make sense of how we survived it. Including a recent episode with Mark Lamont Hill, waxing all about crack in the 80s. To be clear, 84 is big to me, not just because, of crack. I'm down to talk about crack on day, but just so y'all know. I mean, at this point, this is the second episode where we've discussed crack. So I'm starting to see that there's a through line.
Starting point is 00:19:11 We also have AIDS on the table right now. Thank you finishing that sentence. Yes. I don't think there's a more important year for black people. Really? Yeah. For me, it's one of the most important years for black people in American history. Listen to look back at it on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your
Starting point is 00:19:31 podcasts. Greg CoSell, 40 minutes from now, top of next hour. You're now entering the No Bull Zone sponsored by credible great rates, none of the bowl. So Baker Mayfield, certainly on this show and around the country, got a lot of crap. He sort of deserves this moment. Deshawn Watson is the new Cleveland quarterback. Baker Mayfield is the former Cleveland quarterback, and Baker is having a great season. He's been really good on third down. And his numbers it out. 69% completion percentage. Passer rating 104. He's getting protection.
Starting point is 00:20:07 Doesn't cost a franchise, a ton of money, and Deshawn Watson's been a miss. And again, he's gotten a lot of crap he deserves this. I'm actually more impressed with Baker today than I was ever in Cleveland. And there's a couple of reasons. One, he's just better as an underdog. He just is. I'd
Starting point is 00:20:23 fueled him at Oklahoma when he came as an underdog. He's got a chip on his shoulder, a mile long. It is who he is. He is. he's bettered as an underdog. Secondly, Tampa, there's no pressure in Tampa. Even good teams, there's no pressure in Tampa. You know, in Cleveland, number one pick, same division as Raven, Steelers.
Starting point is 00:20:41 There's just a lot of heat. And third, Tampa? Tampa's won Super Bowls. Cleveland hasn't. Tampa's got a history of loading up a franchise from time to time and being great. Could this be for the next two to three years the Gino Smith story? Now, you say to yourself, come on. They struggle.
Starting point is 00:21:01 can't handle the pressure, kind of immature first start, bounce around the league, and then go to a place that's got some star receivers, low expectations, geographically far northwest, down in Tampa, not a lot of heat, and they're pretty good. Why couldn't it be that?
Starting point is 00:21:22 Baker was better in Cleveland that Gino was in New York. Why couldn't it be that? I think this football team is way better than I thought. thought, and let's say they win eight games. I know there are two and eight games. Nine games. Seven games. They'll be drafting somewhere between like 13th and 17th.
Starting point is 00:21:44 They'll probably take a quarterback. Riley Leonard. Duke, he projects to go about there. He's not going to be ready to play year one. So Baker has a good year this year. Baker has a good year and their rookie sits behind him next year. Then they go into the third camp and they battle. Aaron Rogers sat for years.
Starting point is 00:22:04 Jordan Love sat for years. It's not crazy. I think Baker throws a better football than Gino's Smith. Gino's bigger, and I think he's pretty mobile for his size, moves pretty well. But I think Baker throws a better football. I said before, when Baker and I were having our issues, I never denied his talent. I always said he's not a number one pick, but he's one of the top 20, 25 best quarterbacks on the planet. he's probably closer to, you know, 20 than 10, he's somewhere in there, throws a good football.
Starting point is 00:22:38 I got a lively arm. Now he's healthy finally. You know, a lot of his Cleveland stuff is he tried to square up a safety after an interception. I think it was a safety and got his shoulder pulled out. Then he came back too early, got injured again, and he was just never right physically, and he tends to play with a lot of hutzpah and confidence. And when he got hurt, pro athletes lose their confidence. I think that's a big part of it.
Starting point is 00:23:01 He was playing pretty well pre that injury. But I, believe it or not, this makes me happy. I think you could have absolutely with this roster a Gino Smith story. In that division, you tell me they can't sneak into the playoffs? I mean, Carolina rookie quarterback, Atlanta, meh. New Orleans 2 and O, but not blown anybody away. Here's Todd Bowles on his quarterback. He's been through a lot in five years.
Starting point is 00:23:29 years he's been through ups and downs he knows it's not about him it's about the team he's being very smart with the football if you don't turn it over you give yourselves a chance you know that that's important you have to take chances but you can't turn it over as well he's been doing a great job at that humbled like gino smith matured like gino smith why not tamaskoff players seattle had some players j mac with the news Turn on the news. This is the herd line news. I kind of saw you, when I said that, you went, eh.
Starting point is 00:24:05 And then you sit there and you think, Gino got a DK Metcalfa, Tyler Lockett. He had a veteran coach. Like, Todd Bowles has been around. It's Mike Evans, Chris Godwin. Neither O'Line was great. Got to be revamped. But you're like, that was kind of a weird division. Arizona's a mass.
Starting point is 00:24:21 Rams rebuilding last year. All of a sudden, you look up and you're like, you and I both know, a wild card could come from that division, and we don't love anybody outside of the Saints roster, which is the best. Everything after that is just scheduling and breaks. See, at first blush, I hear that. I'm like, gosh, this is, come on.
Starting point is 00:24:39 Like, I know you love analogies. This is silly. And I say, well, wait a sec. Baker's facing an Eagles team right now. They're beat up. They got cluster injuries all over the place. I think Tampa's probably the side this week, and then all of a sudden,
Starting point is 00:24:51 if they shock the world and pull the upset, Baker 3 and O, and your Gino Smith story is ahead of the curve. Like, you know, I love to push back against you when I can because you've got a lot of holes. You drop your gloves sometimes. But on this one, I think you could be on his eyes. It's a little crazy. By the way, people, don't forget this. Everybody bailed on Gino. I mean, Gino was like the shock of the year. Rightfully so. Okay. And people bailed on Baker, understandably so. And the NFL gives us a shock or two a year. You know, we love to build up, hype people up in media, and then tear them down. And now Baker's being rebuilt again.
Starting point is 00:25:26 Everybody loves a comeback story. It'd be a great comeback story. Yeah. All right, let's get to Jordan Love. I thought we had hot takes yesterday from former NFL players, but this one is just stunning. Jordan Love, obviously, he's doing well. 396 yards passing, tied for the league league with six T-Ds. Love's play has caught the attention of Packers' legend, Leroy Butler.
Starting point is 00:25:47 Who believes the quarterback might be the best of his draft class? He was in the same draft class with, wait for it. Harold Herbert and Tua. Okay, after two games, Leroy Butler's very excited. And I need you to, listen, I went after the former quarterback yesterday. I have his jersey. He sent me a sign jersey.
Starting point is 00:26:09 I know, he's been on the show. So I'm going to lay off. I'm going to pull back. This one's you. Yeah, that's, he's not that good. Yeah, so Jordan Love is not that. What Jordan Love is, good mobility, looks comfortable. last week when I needed him to do something late, it didn't have it.
Starting point is 00:26:28 And by the way, if he was a rookie, give him a pass. Second year, little pass. Bro, you've been in the system a long time. You've got to make plays like that. You've got to be viable. Got to give me a six, seven play drive. Got to get into the end zone. Got to get me something.
Starting point is 00:26:41 You can't be like three, four plays out. Last week was weird. I had Falcons in the contest, but they had no first downs in the fourth quarter. And a 12-point lead in the fourth quarter. But they were also missing Bakhtiari, Watson, Jones. I don't know where you go with that. Colin, I got some numbers here.
Starting point is 00:26:57 I believe the Packers have the third most three-and-outs in the league. It's kind of a feast or famine offense, right? And in fairness, Christian Watson is a big component here. Cute. I mean, they have their best receiver. He's their cleanup hitter. He's their home run guy, and I don't think it's fair yet. I said, let's get the Thanksgiving on Jordan Love.
Starting point is 00:27:16 I don't have any strong opinions on him yet. Let's get Christian Watson healthy. If David Boktiari's not healthy, he's one of the best pass blocking tackles in 10 years. The Packers have no turnovers, which is key. Interesting number here. I like that, by the way. I like that part of Jordan Love. That's huge, yeah.
Starting point is 00:27:32 Not making mistakes. Not screwing it up. CJ Stroud, not making mistakes. So this is weird, though. Packers opponents have 49 first downs. The Packers have 32. Like, I don't know what you do with that stat, but basically, opponents are moving the ball in the Packers.
Starting point is 00:27:47 Green Bay's not moving the ball. And that's having faced Chicago. And Atlanta. If you don't have Christian Watson, don't I defend you differently? You do? And Iron Jones last week. Yeah. So I think the Christian Watson piece changes.
Starting point is 00:28:01 He is a sprinter. We got an incomplete grade on Jordan Love. Is that fair? You cannot take away Devonte Adams and go. Garopolo's having a bad year. When you get these star receivers, Justin, and I'm not saying Christian Watson is Devonthe Adams. But he is a game breaker. He is one of the faster guys on the outside.
Starting point is 00:28:19 he's their over the top guy. So you take that component out. And by the way, they're both young. So I guarantee you, Jordan Love, that was probably his number one guy at practice in camp. You take him. I don't think it's fair yet to judge it. What do you do with the Packers at home against the Saints? This will be the toughest defense of his face.
Starting point is 00:28:37 My gut feeling was I liked Green Bay in this spot because Saints played Thursday. Monday. So it's a short week. Then they go on the road. The wise guys like New Orleans. I like Green Bay. just saw the jets on a short week go on the road and get basically blasted in the second half by Dallas. Maybe the Saints run out of gas in Green Bay. I don't know. I was leaning Saints,
Starting point is 00:28:58 but this is probably a stay away, right? It's, I think the line's one or two. Yeah, my gut feeling is Green Bay wins it, but I don't have a start, no, no strong conviction. Okay. Let's go to Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs. He adjusted his contract this week, which will now see him earn $208 million from 2023 to 2006. Mahomes now becomes the second highest paid QB in the NFL and gives the chiefs more financial flexibility.
Starting point is 00:29:24 Here's the two-time MVP on his new deal. You have a lot of great players that I want to be here so we win a lot of Super Bowls and I want to make a lot of money, but I also want to win. I think when you look back at teams and players, you look back at how they won and the perception of how they did things.
Starting point is 00:29:42 And so that's what I try to manage and the right median of getting the money, but also winning football games. You can if your GM drafts well. And I would say Mahalms and Herbert have GMs who draft really well. Baltimore usually, Philadelphia usually. I don't know Cincinnati's track record historically. They don't take a lot of big swings in the draft. They kind of just take their draft picks.
Starting point is 00:30:10 But I think when you pay the quarterback, what it does put pressure on, beyond the quarterback, it puts pressure on the general manager, right? Because obviously, Zach Taylor got to a Super Bowl, Andy Reid, there's pressure on the coach. Time out, time out. The GM. Zach Taylor got to a Super Bowl? No, Joe Burrow got to the Super Bowl. Bad coaches don't get to Super Bowls. What do you mean? Of course. Quaracts carry people everywhere all the time. Give me a terrible coach who got to a Super Bowl.
Starting point is 00:30:36 Zach Taylor. Sorry, sorry. Sorry, that's reality. He's not a good coach. Come on. How do we not? No. We have a Chiefs, sorry, a Bengals fan here who's all irate that I said that. I apologize. Give me the list of bad coaches that got to Super Bowl. You got to do something right. You got to do something right. Okay, I'll stand down. I just, I know you defended Dan Campbell, right? When I said he was a bottom tier coach. Tell me Zach Taylor, he's not a top 12 coach in the league?
Starting point is 00:31:09 Come on, there's no way. Let's just say that. We don't need to do a list. But, okay, let's just take out who we know is great. You know, Belichick, Andy Reid, Sean Payton, John Harbaugh, Tomlin, Pete Carroll. Who am I missing? Did we mention Andy Reid? Yeah, I think I did. Shannon's obviously.
Starting point is 00:31:28 McVeigh is obviously good. Eight, so that's eight right there. Well, it's like quarterbacks. At any one time, there's seven or eight great quarterbacks and head coaches. Oh, Brian Daibol? Can we put them in there? We like Daibol. Come on. He's not in that class. Dayball over Taylor.
Starting point is 00:31:41 That's a no-brainer. Okay, well, I'm just saying. seven great quarterbacks in the league, seven great coaches, roughly. And then you get into the Dack Prescott, Kirk Cousins, then you get into, I believe, the Zach Taylors, the Mike McCarthy's,
Starting point is 00:31:56 where they've... Zach Taylor or Mike McCartney. Now, that's... Mike McCarthy won a Super Bowl. He did. Zach Taylor got to one, and with Aaron Donald ensured he didn't win it,
Starting point is 00:32:07 but they were driving for the score. Here's the thing. If you get to a Super Bowl, That means you won multiple playoff games. You compete with the Rams who were red hot on the final play of the game. You're not doing that with a bad coach. I'm not saying Zach's, again, I'm not saying Derek Carr as Justin Herbert. But Derek Carr is a-
Starting point is 00:32:29 What do we do? You said Josh McDaniels. What do we do with him? Is he a good coach? I would say he is below right now, Zach Taylor, because he thinks he can come in. Let's not worry about what he thinks. The production right now is for. fired and fourth place.
Starting point is 00:32:45 So you got to give people credit. Joe Burrow off an injury, I think, you know, off an injury, he took a team with a bad on line and a young quarterback to the Super Bowl in the AFC. Come on, that's good coaching. That's good coaching. I love these debates. Okay.
Starting point is 00:33:02 Final story, the Eagles, their 2 and O haven't looked like last year's NFC championship team just yet. Jason Kelsey, boy, he's making the media rounds. He wants our jobs, huh? one on a Philly radio show was asked to give the temperature of the team after two games. Here's what Kelsey had to say.
Starting point is 00:33:18 Over 2 and O, which is good. Over 2 and O, and we know that we could very easily be one-on-one, and we have not played football the way we want to play football yet. So the temperature of the team is a little bit on edge, and I think everybody feels that we need to play better, and if we want to live up to the expectations, that we think that we're,
Starting point is 00:33:41 are capable of playing like, we need to make improvements and we need to perform better. They have not played well, and they're 2-0. This is a really good team that doesn't know quite what they are offensively. But they have a little bit of an identity crisis. What was their identity last year? They leaned into their power running quarterback, 10 rushes a game and leaned into it. Then they paid him and thought, I don't want to see them get hit. And then they lost a coordinator, and they're like, well, we want Jalen and the
Starting point is 00:34:11 pock, no, Baltimore has come to terms with our quarterback's good in the pocket, which Jalen is, and we like him to run. They can't quite put their arms around. He's a power running quarterback. Let him do it. Like I've said before, if you told me Jalen Hertz get banged up and plays 15 games a year for the next four years and misses two games a year, and then after four years retires, but I get four years out of him, I would sign up for that today, his leadership, his intelligence, his ability. Not all these guys are built to play 12 years. If a guy runs, it's like Justin Fields.
Starting point is 00:34:47 Let him run. So we're going to find out a lot about Hertz. Because the first two weeks, what we've seen is defense is sit back, too high shell. We're not getting beat deep. No AJ Brown 50-yard bombs. No Devante Smith stuff. Jalen, let's see it. Can you beat us underneath and take what we're giving you?
Starting point is 00:35:03 He's largely done that but has not looked great. So this week, Tampa Bay, I'm looking at the screen here. They blitz at the fifth highest rate in the league. Todd Bowles is going to pressure you, leaving his quarterbacks on islands. If they do that, I think this could be a Devante Smith. They're going to maybe look like the Eagles of Old with the big explosive plays down the field over the top. They got star receivers. They should.
Starting point is 00:35:24 Brown and, yeah, it's a good group. I still want to take Tampa for some reason. I don't. They're at home. Prime time? Baker Mayfield prime time? Oh, is it a Sunday night game? It's a Monday night to double.
Starting point is 00:35:36 Bengals, Rams, Eagles, Buck? That's fun. What do you think of the Monday night doubleheaders? Well, I like those two. I'd like it more of Burrow played. But like they're kind of overlapping. I'm not a huge fan of it. Here's the thing.
Starting point is 00:35:48 My whole life, it was Sunday, early window late, and then they adds, you know, Sunday night football is awesome. But I'm kind of tired by the end of Sunday night football. I've watched a lot of football. And then Monday, give me one more game. Now I've got two games. Now I got Thursday games. End of the year, they do Saturday games.
Starting point is 00:36:02 It's like Saturday is my college football. In a middle America, and, well, Friday high school, Saturday college, NFL, Sunday, Monday. I'm not a huge fan of Thursday night football. I get it. I think the media overstates the physical wear and tear. Teams don't hit all week on Thursday. They get those game plans.
Starting point is 00:36:24 It's the easiest week of the year for players. You don't do anything. Then you get a long week. You get almost get a half a buy. But I am not a huge. The reason that happened is because, isn't it because of the rider's strike and they're trying to add more games on ABC or something. I mean, I don't know why they'd add it.
Starting point is 00:36:41 I think that's part of it. So you know what the big loser is here? The 4 o'clock window on Sunday only has three games. I know. I hate that. I like five. And here are the games. Carolina, Seattle.
Starting point is 00:36:52 By the way, Bryce Young missed practice again today. It's happening right now. So it's now going to be Andy Dalton against Gino Smith. That's like, eh. Justin Fields against Kansas City. That could be over at halftime. And the other one is Dallas, Arizona. A double-digit spread.
Starting point is 00:37:06 with, it's going to be a blood bath. So you got three crappy games in the 4 p.m. window. Well, let's, you can hang out with your wife. Time out. Time out. Time out. Did anybody think Colorado, Colorado State was going to be amazing? No, that wasn't, that wasn't great football. That was like the Dionne's and it turned into good football. Okay, well, what I'm saying is, how do you know those four o'clock window games? The NFL, you never know. You know what I mean. It's like not great quarterbacks, not great matchups. Well, maybe not great matchups, but if that doesn't mean you
Starting point is 00:37:35 won't have great. The Giant Arizona game ended up being thrilling and it looked horrible for an hour and a half. See, I know there's guys out there who will relate. White's going to look at the screen, see a bunch of crappy scores, double digit spreads. Hey, can you do this errand for me? And I'm like, I guess I got to do it now because these games stink. I can follow on my phone. I can take 30 minutes out because, you know Sundays, I'm locked in. I'm not doing, I was coaching a girl's soccer game watching Red Zone on my phone and some dads are coming up. Hey, you got that Bronco score? I'm like, of course I do. It's football Sundays, man.
Starting point is 00:38:08 We need good matchups, Colin? I don't disagree. I like one Monday game. Yeah. I don't think you should mess around. First of all, it screws up the player's schedules, the staffs, short week, the following week. I'm not a huge fan. Like the NFL, I begrudgingly give you a handful of European games.
Starting point is 00:38:30 I understand growing the brand. But by and large, I kind of like them here. Sunday and Monday. That's kind of what I like. J. Mack with the news. Well, that's the news. And thanks for stopping by. The Herd Lie News. Be sure to catch live editions of the Herd, weekdays in noon Eastern, 9 a.m. Pacific.
Starting point is 00:38:49 Hey, what's up, everybody? It's me, three-time Pro Bowl of LaVar Arrington, and I couldn't be more excited to announce a new podcast called Up on Game. What is Up on Game, you ask? Along with my fellow Pro Bowler, T.J. Hushman Zada and Super Bowl. Champion, yep, that's right. Plexico Burris. You can only name a show with that type of talent on it. Up on Game.
Starting point is 00:39:11 We're going to be sharing our real-life experiences loaded with teachable moments. Listen to Up On Game with me, LaVar Arington, T.J. Hushmanzada and Plexico Burris on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcast, or wherever you get your podcast from. Imagine an Olympics where doping is not only legal but encouraged. It's the enhanced games. Some call it grotesque. Others say it's unleashing human potential. Either way, the podcast's Superhuman documented it all,
Starting point is 00:39:43 embedded in the games and with the athletes for a full year. Within probably 10 days, I'd put on 10 pounds. I was having trouble stopping the muscle growth. Listen to Superhuman on the I-Hard Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. A win is a win. A win is a win. I don't care what you're saying.

Starting point is 00:41:01 Do you remember when Diana Ross double-tapped Little Kim's boobs at the VMAs? Or when Kanye said that George Bush didn't like black people. I know what you're thinking. What the hell does George Bush got to do with Little Kim? Well, you can find out on the Look Back at it podcast. I'm Sam J. And I'm Alex English. Each episode, we picket here, unpack what went down,
Starting point is 00:41:22 and try to make sense of how we survived it. Including a recent episode with Mark Lamont Hill, waxing all about crack in the 80s. To be clear, 84 is big to me, not just because. a crack. I'm down to talk about crack on day, but just so y'all know. I mean, at this point, Mark, this is the second episode where we've discussed crack. So I'm starting to see that there's a through line.
Starting point is 00:41:41 We also have AIDS on the table right now. Thank you finishing that sentence. Yes. I don't think there's a more important year for black people. Really? Yeah. For me, it's one of the most important years for black people in American history. Listen to look back at it on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your
Starting point is 00:42:01 Saturday on Fox. We got a pack 12 triple header as UCLA faces Utah at 3.30 Eastern, then Oregon State. Takes on Washington State, followed by Caleb Williams, leading fifth-ranked USC against Arizona State. You know, we've been talking about Justin Fields. Chicago's a big market. Now, J. Mack liked the Bears before the season. I did not. And I said, I thought Justin Fields was kind of a 60-40 going to make it. I did think DJ Moore was a great acquisition. He does have a defensive head coach. I think that hurts. Mike Tomlin, Kenny Pickett. I don't think it's great.
Starting point is 00:42:38 Mike Zimmer struggled with Kirk Cousins. Pete Carroll at one point struggled with Russell Wilson. Belichick didn't ever go to dinner with Brady. It's just a different world. I think it's a huge benefit for Brock Purdy and Tua having offensive coaches. Tua is the same guy as four years ago. He just got a different coach, defense to offense. Now he's a pro bowler before he was like a bust, a borderline bust.
Starting point is 00:43:00 Well, what happened? He can get taller. His arm didn't get stronger. Tua got somebody that knows how to develop offense, put their arms around him, gave him support. Young people more than old people need support. Once you get to be my age, I don't give a rip what people think. Made my money, got my career, happily married, kids in college, I'm good. But when you're young and you're growing, haven't gotten a bag yet, fame yet, acclaim yet,
Starting point is 00:43:26 sometimes confidence yet, you need support. So I don't think it helps him. Chicago, and I've said this before, is a defensive coach. culture. They're still bragging about the 85 bears. It's a defensive town and a defensive culture. Dick Buckus, Brian Erlacker, Richard Dent, that's the history. They've never had a great receiver. They've never had a great quarterback. I can name you 10 defensive guys. They had safeties, corners, edge rushers, defensive linemen, linebackers. So, but he, yes, yesterday, Justin Field said something and it was interesting. Maybe I'm over-analyzing this, but I want you to
Starting point is 00:43:59 listen to this. You know, at the end of the day, It makes it, you know, they're doing their job when they're giving me, you know, what to look at and stuff like that. But at the end of the day, I can't be thinking about that when the game comes. I prepare myself throughout the week. And then when the game comes, it's, you know, it's time to play free at that point. So, you know, just thinking less and, you know, playing more. That doesn't sound right. That works in high school and sometimes in college.
Starting point is 00:44:26 Jimmy Johnson came on this show. I think it was Monday. Or not last week. It was recently. And he said, and I believe this to be true, I've heard it before. The two things that make you successful in the NFL, quickly processing information before the snap and immediately after and then accurately delivering the football, thinking a lot. Before the play and the minute the ball is snapped. It's not just going out there and playing.
Starting point is 00:44:53 I'll give you an example. Dak Prescott, a great processor. Obviously a smart guy. Very good pre-snap. until last year doesn't throw a lot of picks. He was a 3-1 TD interception ratio guy. So DAC doesn't have Justin Fields athletic ability, size or arm. Doesn't.
Starting point is 00:45:11 But DAC's a great processor. Now, last year his interceptions went up because the feeling was they were asking him to do more than physically he is. Dak tends to be somebody that can manage it, make the occasional throw. Smart guy get out of trouble. Dak keeps you out of trouble. His all-time highlight reel for Dak isn't that great. but he doesn't get you in trouble much. He's a thinker.
Starting point is 00:45:32 He's a pre-snap. It's all pre-snap. Ball snap for about a second and a half. Where's everybody going? Then you can play freely. So I worry about that. And I think, and so when I, Justin Fields, and the numbers tell you this.
Starting point is 00:45:47 He either isn't processing the play once the ball is snapped. Or if he does, he can't accurately get it there. Both are a huge problem. But I, and I am not anti-running quarterback. I support Lamar Jackson, Josh Allen, Jalen Hertz. They're all very good simultaneously in the pocket. Lamar Jackson's been better in the pocket for the last four years. Nobody wants to admit it.
Starting point is 00:46:07 He's good in the pocket. He's very good. Josh Allen's very good in the pocket. Jalen Hertz says, but I like they're running. But Justin Beals in the pocket, his pocket pass a rating 76. That's what it is. This year, it's 70. That's what it is.
Starting point is 00:46:22 So I think at some point, this whole thing about, hey, during the week, I get all this coaching, then I'm just going to go play. That's not really the NFL. It's hard. And so much, I think Dak Prescott's a great example, a fourth round pick, never had a big arm. Even his college coach, Dan Mullen came on our show and it's like, you know, we never thought he was a great thrower of the football. But how does he do it? Really smart pre-snap. Never get you in big trouble with his arm, which is okay, quickly identifies where to throw it and gets it there fast and accurately. Jimmy Garoppolo is a great example of this. Jimmy Garoppolo can't run. He's the opposite of Justin Fields. He gets rid of it super quick and accurately. No athletic ability.
Starting point is 00:47:05 Jimmy Garapolo is like near the bottom this year in the NFL and three and outs. Only a couple, I think bottom. Jimmy Garoppolo and Lamar Jackson are tied in the NFL for the fewish three and out drives. Now, Lamar, we get. Jimmy, we're like, what? Garapolo is the opposite of fields. Very limited. Doesn't have a big arm. Doesn't throw much up the sideline. Can't pick up a first down running. Pre-snap, get rid of it, accurate, process out. That's Dax career. He processes stuff very fast. Just seize the field. Zach Wilson cannot see the field. I don't know what it is. Dak Prescott's always been good at it. Rookie year, preseason, always good. All right. Greg Coasell, top of next hour. I love Greg CoSell because if you bet football, play fantasy football, want to get smarter at football.
Starting point is 00:47:54 I think Greg's the best 15-minute listen in the NFL every week. He will say something. And I will be like, oh, I'm going to use that. Oh, I never thought of that. So Kenny Pickett struggling. And Greg likes Kenny Pickett more than I do. So we'll see. Also, interesting words.
Starting point is 00:48:13 You know how Arizona has kind of become the dumping ground world was crapping on him? There is a best case scenario for Arizona. Kyler Murray is talking. And I like what he's saying. very interesting Kyler Marine, Arizona. Don't sell all that stock. Keep a little, as they call it, powder.
Starting point is 00:48:35 Keep a little bit on the side for Arizona. Could they have three first round picks next year? Not two, three. Greg CoSell next, live in LA, The Hurd. Another podcast from some SNL late-night comedy guy, not quite. Unhumor me with Robert Smygel and friends. Me and hilarious guests from Bob Odenkirk to David Letterman help make you funnier.
Starting point is 00:48:56 This week, my guest, S&L's Mikey Day and headwriter, Streeter Seidel, help an a cappella band with their between songs banter. Where does your group perform? We do some retirement homes. Those people are starving for banter. Listen to humor me with Robert Smigel and friends on the I-Heart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.
