This is an I-Heart podcast.
Guaranteed Human.
Another podcast from some SNL, late-night comedy guy, not quite.
Unhumor me with Robert Smygel and friends.
Me and hilarious guests from Bob Odenkirk to David Letterman
help make you funnier.
This week, my guest, SNL's Mikey Day and head writer, Streeter Seidel,
help an a cappella band with their between songs banter.
Where does your group perform?
We do some retirement homes.
Those people are starving for banter.
Listen to humor me with Robert Smigel
and friends on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.
Imagine an Olympics where doping is not only legal, but encouraged.
It's the enhanced games.
Some call it grotesque.
Others say it's unleashing human potential.
Either way, the podcast's Superhuman documented it all, embedded in the games and with the athletes
for a full year.
Within probably 10 days, I'd put on 10 pounds.
I was having trouble stopping the muscle growth.
Listen to Superhuman on the IHard Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.
Hey, what's good, y'all?
You're listening to Learn the Hard Way with your favorite therapist and host, Kear Games.
This space is about black men's experiences, having honest conversations that it's really not safe to have anywhere, but you're having them with a licensed professional who knows what he's doing.
How many men carry a suit or armor?
It signals to the world that you're not to be played with.
And just because you have the capability that does not mean that you need to.
Listen and learn the hard way on the AHA radio app, Apple Podcast, or wherever you get your podcast.
A win is a win.
A win is a win.
I don't care what you're saying.
Yep, that's me, Cliver Taylor the 4th.
You might have seen the skits, my basketball and college football journey, or my career in sports media.
Well, now I'm bringing all of that excitement to my brand new podcast, The Clifford Show.
This is a place for raw, unfiltered conversation.
with athletes, creators, and voices that not only deserve to be heard, but celebrated.
So let's get to it.
Listen to The Clifford Show on the IHeard Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcast.
And for more behind the scenes, follow at Clifford and at TikTok podcast network on TikTok.
Thanks for listening to The Heard podcast.
Be sure to catch us live every weekday from 12 to 3 Eastern, 9 to noon Pacific on Fox Sports Radio and FS1.
Find your local station for the Heard at Fox SportsRadio.com or stream us live every day on the iHeart
Radio app by searching Herd.
You're listening to Fox Sports Radio.
Ah, here we go.
It is a Thursday NFL tonight, live in Los Angeles.
This is The Hurd.
Wherever you may be, however you may be listening.
We're on Fox Sports Radio and right here in FS1.
One hour from now, just about as good a segment as we do,
The great Greg CoSell stops by to break down what we saw last week and what we'll see this week.
If you bet games, you play fantasy or just love it.
It's our NFL meat sandwich.
No fluff, no frills.
One hour from now, Greg CoSell stops by Bengals Browns tonight.
Joy Taylor, how are you?
I'm great.
I plan on being on my couch from about 4 p.m. Pacific on.
That's where you can find me.
Game two tonight.
plus Baker versus Burrow.
That's a good night.
That's a good Thursday night.
It is big.
I'll be grilling tonight for the fam.
Big grill night.
So I was thinking about driving to work this morning.
I was thinking, you know, I should create a new segment on the show.
The new segment on the show I should create would be called Help the Herd.
And I would be totally transparent with you, the audience.
And I would say, okay, this would really help the show.
And I'll give you an example.
Tonight, Browns, Bengals, Burrow, Baker.
What would help the herd tonight?
Baker is awful.
He totally unravels.
Getting into a shouting match with OBJ and Kevin Stefansky.
He gets benched and Case Keenham comes in and saves the day.
That would help the herd.
I could walk in here with a hangover, three minutes of prep and do the show.
That'd be the easiest show I've ever done in my life.
Help the herd.
OBJ has one catch.
Screaming at Baker.
It unravels tonight.
I mean, that's the only reason we're watching, right?
Is Baker Mayfield?
like who would watch these two teams why would this matter because joe thomas mr cleveland brown
admitted yesterday let's read the quote i will for the radio audience tv audience we'll see it
baker just didn't look very confident he didn't put the ball where he needed to go and i think
it's really fair to say that week two more pressure he understands this is his year to prove it
or they might have to find somebody else he's admitting it folks i don't think that's
going to happen. I think Baker will play fine and Cleveland will win. But the reason we're watching
tonight is that potential unraveling. All you Baker-Mayfield fan boys, we got a power outage in Ohio
last week. Nobody tweeted me. He's not a number one pick. He's shorter than you'd want. He's cockier
than you'd want. He's less accurate than you'd want. He's less athletic than you'd want. You look
around the league at these quarterbacks, he's not a number one.
By the way, I've lost a lot of arguments.
I won this one.
It's over.
Westbrook and this, Baker Mayfield, I won.
But Colin, there is no but Colin.
The reason we're watching the game tonight is because we know Baker Mayfield is about
three more crappy Sundays from their moving off.
In fact, I'll make the argument tonight that if Joe Burrow plays with not even half of
Baker's talent.
If Burrow looks better and loses, it's 24, 23, but you come away saying,
how the hell did Burrow take that offensive line and those pieces and keep it close?
There will be people in the room that will go, hey, you hit on some picks, you miss on some picks.
We're watching for Baker tonight.
I think you'll win.
I think you'll play fine.
He should.
But when you, and this is what I said, back when they drafted him, if you are a first,
round quarterback.
You have to have something that is special.
Lamar Jackson's speed.
Kyler Murray's accuracy and
escapeability.
Josh Allen's arm.
Carson Wentz's size and arm.
There's got to be something where you're like,
okay, that doesn't come on.
Even Paxton Lynch was a bust.
You looked at his size and went, whoa, that guy can move for,
you know, you could make the argument.
There's a little big bend there.
There's none of that with Baker.
He's a little short.
He's not that accurate.
He's not that athletic.
What's the wow?
There isn't any.
Doesn't mean he can't be successful.
I said, I think he's a franchise quarterback potentially somewhere.
If he gets some continuity, Cleveland won't get any.
But to be a first round guy, Mahomes' arm, Alan's size,
a scalability of Kiner Marie's got 17 starts.
17 are any of us?
And by the way, doesn't have close until last week,
Ray Hopkins close to Baker's talent.
It doesn't take
this long.
Unless, like Sam Darnold, and I
understand the critics,
you've got a coach nobody likes,
an awful offensive line,
every receiver officially this morning is hurt
in New York, and Lavian Bell hates
the coach and he's on the IR. Then you
get to a point where, okay, I got to give a
quarterback a fair chance.
But we are watching
tonight. We're not watching for Joe
Burrell. He doesn't have some legacy,
see, he's not, he's certainly not controversial, he's not polarizing, nobody cares about Cincinnati
nationally.
We're watching for Baker.
And we're watching because he wasn't the number one picked.
It was a reach.
And we all know, including Joe Thomas.
He gets out play tonight.
He loses tonight and he is losing a big chunk of the room.
Don't think he will, but that's why we're watching.
So I saw this for the people that don't get LeBron, the four on the earth,
don't. LeBron James has broken the record officially in the NBA.
His 16th all-NBA selection.
There's so much talent in this league.
Just go look at the second and the third.
I mean, Kauai Leonard made second team.
So much talent the NBA has.
Yokic for Denver made the second team.
It's Harden, it's Luca.
It's LeBron.
It's Yonis, Anthony Davis.
Officially, LeBron is the greatest player for the longest duration ever.
I did not say the goat.
He is the greatest player.
Kareem is second place in my opinion.
But he has now surpassed Kareem.
He's the greatest player for the longest period of time.
And for the record, I'm not really a longevity guy.
I've always said in baseball for the Hall of Fame.
Are you great, Jim Rice for 10 years?
You're a Hall of Famer.
I don't care if you compiled the most doubles over 27 years.
You know, you had the most seasons with the fewest.
airs at second base over 27 years.
I'm into great.
A lot of people work at one job for 35 years.
Congratulations.
You were content.
You played it safe.
I don't think it's bad, but I don't think it translates to great.
LeBron is the greatest player in the history of basketball on the planet for the longest
duration.
And it's hard to be great a long time as a business or a player, a business or an athlete.
There's cultural changes.
You get some bad executives.
You're constantly getting poached.
You know, LeBron's teammates, he loses them.
A company loses their best engineer, their best vice president.
Sometimes you have bad products.
Sometimes an athlete has injuries, bad teammates.
But let me make this comparison.
LeBron is Microsoft and Michael Jordan is Apple.
Apple and Michael Jordan are more glamorous, more popular, have more popular, have more.
more iconic moments.
You know, LeBron,
The Block, we could argue
over his second most iconic play.
The Block is it, right?
Michael's got like eight of those.
The hand switching here and the Craig
Elo Jumper and the Jam
over the Knicks. Michael's got
like 10 of those. LeBron's got the Block
and then like 17 years of Amazing.
That's Microsoft.
Apple
fired Steve Jobs.
had a huge downturn, disappeared in America.
Michael Jordan retired twice.
Second team, he was crappy.
But the duration of LeBron and Microsoft.
Microsoft was founded in 86 by 89.
It was an economic force in America.
It's never had a downturn.
It is not as glamorous as Apple.
It's not as cool as Apple.
It is not as iconic as Apple.
They don't have an iPhone.
But every company in America uses Microsoft of any size.
Every single one.
We all use Apple.
every company in America that matters in the world uses Microsoft.
And that is LeBron.
I'm not arguing Go.
You can argue Apple Microsoft what matters more.
It's personal.
But to go 31 years as a company or 17 years as an athlete and have no big downturn.
I mean, we knocked LeBron for losing in the finals.
That's the knock on him.
He's going to blow Jordan away in every year.
stat.
The knock on LeBron is, well, I mean, you know, he lost that finals with Matthew Delavadova
to a dynasty.
That's some criticism.
And I guess the knock on Microsoft is, you know, they didn't kind of missed on the phone.
But, and I'm not a longevity guy.
And I get that MJ is more popular, more iconic, more glamorous, more stylish.
I get the Apple MJ argument.
I get that.
And I'm not a longevity guy.
but to be great as a company for 30 years, a power, and to be great as an athlete for 17.
Injuries, bad coaches, bad owners.
I mean, you talk about cultural changes for companies.
How about cultural changes for LeBron?
LeBron walked into the NBA as a freight train, and he had to become a three-point shooter.
The game changed.
They don't even look like it used to.
When LeBron came into the league, centers dominate the league.
Now, Steph Curry, who weighs less than me, is now the guy that can literally
change a series in three minutes.
There's no arguing.
16th first team all NBA.
LeBron James is officially the greatest basketball player in the history of the world for the longest amount of time.
Unbelievable.
All right. Trent Dilfer was on a podcast with my buddy Ryan Rosillo and he said it.
He said it.
Trent said it.
And I kind of agree with him, but he's not wrong about Aaron Rogers.
That's coming up.
Be sure to catch live editions of the herd weekdays in noon Eastern, 9 a.m. Pacific on Fox Sports Radio, FS1, and the IHeard Radio app.

Yep, that's me, Cliver Taylor the 4th.
You might have seen the skits, the reactions, my journey from basketball to college football,
or my career in sports media.
Well, somewhere along the way, this platform became bigger than I ever imagined.
And now I'm bringing all of that excitement to my brand new podcast, The Clifford Show.
This is a place for raw, unfiltered conversations with some of your favorite athletes, creators,

One week, I'll take you behind the scenes of the biggest moments in sports and entertainment.
And the next, we'll talk about life, mental health, purpose, and even music.
The Clifford Show isn't just a podcast.
It's a space for honest conversations, stories that don't.
always get told, and for people who are chasing something bigger.
So if you've ever supported me or you're just chasing down a dream, this is right where
you need to be. Listen to The Clifford show on the IHeart radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you

on TikTok. Do you remember when Diana Ross double-tap Little Kim's boobs at the VMAs?
Or when Kanye said that George Bush didn't like black people. I know what you're thinking.
What the hell does George Bush got to do with Little Kim's?
Kim, well you can find out on the Look Back at it podcast. I'm Sam J. And I'm Alex English.
Each episode, we pick a here, unpack what went down, and try to make sense of how we survived it.
Including a recent episode with Mark Lamont Hill waxing all about crack in the 80s.
To be clear, 84 is big to me, not just because of crack. I'm down to talk about crack on day, but yeah, yeah.
But just so you know. I mean, at this point, Mark, this is the second episode where we've discussed crack.
So I'm starting to see that there's a through line. We also have AIDS on the table.
table right now.
Thank you for finishing that sentence.
I don't think there's a more important year for black people.
Really?
Yeah.
For me, it's one of the most important years for black people in American history.
Listen to look back at it on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your

Welcome to my new podcast, Learn the Hard Way with me, your host, and your favorite therapist,
Kyr Games.
And in recognition of Mental Health Awareness Month, I'm bringing over a decade of my own
experience in the mental health.
and conversations with so many incredible guests.
I'm talking.
Tripp Fontaine, Ryan Clark.
Sometimes when we're in the pursuit of the thing,
we get so wrapped up in the chase
that we don't realize that we are in possession of the thing
and we're still chasing it
and we don't know when we've done enough
because people scoreboard watch.
Life becomes about wins and losses.
Steve Burns, Dustin Ross,
because you find it important to be a good person
while you hear on earth
or are you a good person because you're afraid?
Because that's two.
different intentions, bro.
Absolutely.
And that's two different levels of trust.
I want you to just really be a good person.
Join me, Kear Gaines, is we have real conversations about healing,
growth, fatherhood, pressure, and purpose on my new podcast,
learn the hard way.
Open your free, our Heart Radio app.
Search, learn the hard way, and listen now.
45 minutes from now, Greg CoSell stops by in a Thursday,
top of next hour, our NFL meat sandwich.
It is great to have you in.
Eric Mangini, too,
today. So Trent Dilfer, friend of the show, doesn't do a lot of media anymore. He's a football
coach, but he went on with my friend Ryan Rusillo on his podcast. They were talking about Green Bay
drafting Jordan Love. Jordan loves the talented kid, Utah State, seen as a project, should
be noted. I thought Josh Allen was a project, and now he's winning in the NFL, you know,
playoff quarterback last year. But he's kind of seen as a project, and they traded up to get him.
He didn't fall to them like Aaron Rogers did.
They traded up to get Jordan Love.
And a lot of people around the league, I talked to him,
executives thought he was kind of a second round quarterback, real loose, not ready.
But anyway, Dillfer talking to Ryan Rusillo on his podcast said this was a send a message draft pick.
I can guarantee you in those front offices, there are some wise people that said,
I'm done with him just being good.
We need to be great again.
How do we make them great?
You think they trapped to Jordan Love on purpose to piss them off and make them better.
Heck yeah.
And you get a really talented player that needs two or three years to develop.
Yeah, you do.
You absolutely pull.
You're a puppet master if you're running an NFL organization.
If you're a head coach, you're absolutely a puppet master.
And you're pulling the strings to get the most out of the people you have.
And sometimes that hurts feelings.
And sometimes that's not nice.
Now, for the record, Aaron Rogers isn't the only.
quarterback to have a prickly relationship with a legendary coach or a new coach or an organization.
Now, first of all, I do think Green Bay looked at Jordan Love and they look around the league and they go,
well, he's big, he moves, he's got a big arm, he kind of plays loose.
That's what everybody said about Patrick Mahomes.
Remember what they said about Patrick?
He's a little loose.
I mean, talents there, but the guy's just throwing the ball all over the yard.
He doesn't win enough in college.
I can look at Jordan Love.
I looked at him and I thought, I'd roll the dice if I had an old quarterback.
I would if I was New Orleans, Sean Payton.
If I had an Andy Reid or a Sean Peyton, that's when you take a guy that's talented but loose.
You give him a Kyle Shanahan, a Sean Peyton, you give him an Andy Reed.
So I do think Green Bay liked him.
But what adds credibility to this for me is not just the Jordan Love Pick, because I can see you saying, Aaron's declining, he's getting old, he's had injuries, this kid's a project.
We think Eric can play for three or four more years.
But not drafting a receiver in this draft, it was the greatest wide receiver draft of my life.
There'd never been a time people said 40 receivers could get drafted.
They didn't take one.
I'll give you an example.
It's the combination of the two.
So my wife occasionally will take out a garbage bag from the garbage in the kitchen,
cinch it up, and just put it out.
And the message is, honey, this is heavy.
Could you take it out?
Doesn't do it a lot, but does it occasionally.
But if my wife did that one morning where she took a garbage bag in the kitchen,
cinged up, put it there, and then also put a rake right next to my bed.
She'd be saying, get your lazy butt and help around the house.
You're not doing enough.
She put a rake next to the bed and the garbage bag out.
That is a message.
That is, you-hoo, yard, you've got eyes, see them, and the garbage thing.
One, honey help me.
Two, you've gotten lazy.
I need help around the house.
It's one thing to go get Jordan loved.
argue it. He's talented. Look around the league. He looks a little like Patrick Mahomes.
Playes like Patrick Mahomes. Aaron's had some injuries. We don't want to be held in 2020,
not having the next guy. But then not take a wide receiver. Folks, Devante Adams is great.
He's been hurt. He rolls an ankle. You're no longer a Super Bowl team in Green Bay. And this organization
is not Cincinnati. Their standard in Green Bay is winning Super Bowls. The standard in New
England, the standard in Pittsburgh, the standard in Philadelphia, the New York Giants.
They're Super Bowl franchises.
They've been there a lot often.
Not getting a receiver with the move up.
That's saying, Aaron, we're kind of tired of the attitude, holier than now, passive
aggressive, shots in the media.
I'm kind of tired of it.
Let's go.
You're on the clock.
Joy Taylor with the news.
No, no, no, no, no.
Turn on the news.
This is the herd line news.
Well, Ben Rothesberger had a strong return in the Steelers' 2616 win over at the Giants Monday,
nearly a full year after injuring his elbow.
And he said all that time away made him a little more sore than usual after his first game back.
I was saying today, I feel like I was in just a car accident.
Yesterday, I felt like I was in a train wreck.
So hopefully tomorrow just feels like I fell off a bike or something.
But I'm definitely sore.
The good news is my arm is the only thing it doesn't hurt.
So that's good.
That's the best analogy, Ben.
Yeah, but, you know, I thought about this the other day because I've had Bill Polians told me this.
He's like, you need three weeks of hitting in games, so you're just ready for it.
And I've watched some of these guys, and I've thought, you go from practice to getting hit by Cameron Jordan.
It's like, yeah, that's around the league.
So I do get that.
But the good news is the arm is what you and I were.
about and that's good.
Well, look, you're going to get hit.
And Ben talked about this before
the season started, that he did want
a little bit of that callous
build up because you are going to get hit.
Ben is not the most elusive
quarterback in the league, so
he's a bigger guy to take down. Now, Ben used
to be able to rely on just being stronger,
but he's further into his career now,
so it's not as, you know,
difficult to get him down. But it doesn't
surprise me. They didn't have preseason.
Ben is one of those guys.
that even though he's a veteran probably would have played a little more in the preseason
because he hadn't been out there for a year.
Now, the good news is, Steelers almost always have a very good offensive line.
They still do.
And this organization, more than any in my lifetime, finds wide receiver talent.
When's the last time the Steelers didn't have a couple of receivers, mostly young?
It's their thing.
It's what, like, it is.
It's like New England's very good in the secondary.
Belichick's got the linebacker secondary thing down.
Special teams he's got down.
Pittsburgh. So the good news for Ben is he's not coming back to an empty cupboard. Like he's got
real players on the outside. He has pieces around him. I liked what I saw from Pittsburgh and from Ben,
but really I liked what I saw from Pittsburgh's defense. Now, it was Daniel Jones and
the Giants, so I don't want to overreact too much, but you have to beat who you play,
and that's what we have to evaluate from. And I thought overall the Steelers looked not better
than I thought they would look, but I think I was pleasantly surprised with how good that Ben looked
after having that much time off in surgery.
So Washington's defense had a great performance,
week one against Carson Wentz and the Eagles,
but they're going to have a little bit of a different challenge
against Kyler Murray this week than Carson Wentz.
And Ron Rivera says,
preparing for Murray is making him a little uneasy.
He said he's a dynamic player.
He's got terrific athleticism, gets outside the pocket,
and extends the play.
He's got great vision in anticipation and delivers a great football.
He gives me anxiety.
This will be a good test coming off of that week one.
tremendous performance by Washington's defense because he's right.
Kyleor Murray is, while Carson Wentz is mobile,
Kyler Murray is on a different level.
Well, and also what you're seeing, the San Francisco 49ers,
we would all acknowledge have a great defensive line.
Russell Wilson and Kyler Murray have given them fits.
Jared Goff is good.
Sean McBay's good.
They haven't given San Francisco's front fits.
So I think Washington's got an unbelievable chance defensively this year to be a top
three or four defense.
But, you know,
maybe they just get to him early.
But when I watched Kyler last weekend at the end of last year,
when you're giving San Francisco gray hairs,
and they just can't get to him,
they just can't get to him.
He ran 13 times this weekend, Kyler.
He scored, slid, or ran out of bounds, 12 of 13.
They got him one time.
They literally got a hand on him.
It's, it's.
Well, that's to me what is what separates a quarterback like Lamar Jackson or
Kyler Murray or Russell Wilson from, say, Josh Allen, or any of these other bigger
quarterbacks, Cam Newton, who don't get down as quickly and as smoothly as these guys.
I mean, Lamar will just run, and as soon as the defender's there, he's just like,
boop, out of balance.
Yeah.
Like, can't touch me.
And that's a great skill to have.
But that's what causes so much problems for the defense because you're not going to tackle
him in the open field.
He knows to get out of bounds or get down.
And it's a huge asset to have.
But these two teams coming off of really impressive wins,
this is going to be an interesting game.
This is one of the games this weekend that I want to check out for sure
because that performance of Washington against the Eagles,
eight sacks, and then Kyla Murray and the Cardinals being the 49ers,
these are two teams to watch.
Vegas likes Arizona.
I'll just leave it at that.
One of the wise guys like Arizona this weekend.
Finally, Sequin Barclay was, had a bit of a struggle game
against the Steelers Monday night.
He was only held to six yards on 15 carries.
But former Giant Tiki Barber thinks there's even more
reason to be worried about Saquan. He is very critical of Saquan's blocking and sees it as a
potential liability for the team. Barclay, he might not be in every down back. He cannot pass
protect. And it is starting to become glaring. It's probably the only issue he had to deal with
coming into the NFL because he wasn't asked to do it at Penn State. You see him diving on the
ground, not sticking his head in people's chest. It's going to be a liability because people see it now.
It's on tape and it's going to come out. Seekwan Barkley is a big man. He doesn't want to hit anybody.
it's frustrating to watch.
By the way, Tiki got a lot of heat for this, but let me just say this.
Tiki's played the game.
Tiki knows the game.
Tiki was a player that came into the league and got better at a fumble issue.
And if you watch Saquan Barclay, he's right.
This has been the knock on Adrian Peterson is nobody questions his talent.
Adrian Peterson couldn't catch and didn't always love to block.
Zeke, by the way, is a great blocker.
That's what separates Zeke and Seek-Equila.
Ezekiel Elliott will just stick his face right.
in your chest and he doesn't care. This is a real issue and I think Tiki as a former player,
I think he kind of nailed it. But if this is an issue for Seekwon, you got to keep in mind
he's only in his third year. He had an unbelievable rookie season. He missed three games last
year and now he's with a new head coach. Like Seekwan is a star. We know what Seekwon is capable
of doing. But I don't want to overreact too much to that game against the Steelers defense
that we were just talking about who looks great. And there's a lot of factors going into this
in. Like, Sequin has time to develop into a blocking back if that's even what he's supposed to be.
Like, he can still be in every downback and they put together schemes that don't put him in that
position. Well, the problem being is it's almost like Dana White told me this once. You're either
comfortable getting in the octagon or you're not. You can't, you can't teach it. Like some guys can get
hit in the face and they're totally comfortable with it. Tiki Barger, Tiki Barber had a fumble problem.
position the ball differently.
And Tiki really improved on it.
It is hard to teach.
Are you willing to get run over by a freight train seven times?
Yeah, I mean, when I think of Sequin and how he runs,
that's not, I don't think he's a back that avoids contact.
Like, blocking is a specific skill that you don't necessarily all,
everyone has to have that.
We talk about this with tight ends too.
Some tight ends are just better blockers than other.
Tight ends, that's a huge part of your game.
Like, it's almost to the, to the, to the,
point where we put running backs all in the same category sometimes, like because we see
someone like Zeeke who has so many skills in his toolbox. I think Sequin will be fine, but I also
think it's just give him a little more time to develop into this. Join with the news.
Well, that's the news. And thanks for stopping by. The Hurd Lie News.
Played for the New York Giants, drafted by the New York Giants. Danny Cannell is now joining us
brought to you by Mercedes Ben's The Best or Nothing. So, you know, let's just talk about
the Sequin Barclay thing is you played in the NFL for a long time. My argument is some guys just
Adrian Peterson could never catch and didn't like to block. It's just it's natural for Zeke.
He just likes to do it. Marshawn Lynch. Some guys will put the helmet in the chest. Is the criticism
by Tiki at least reasonable in your opinion? Absolutely. And I was listening to you and joy
talk about it. You talk about somebody who can trust with their opinion. Somebody who, you know,
watches a ton of New York Giants football and has watched it closely and has been in that spot.
He absolutely recognizes it.
I do think they agree with Tiki.
I think that Sequan Barkley has to not be timid when you have to go square to square with a blitzing linebacker or a defense.
Sometimes you slide protections.
You're on the other side.
You've got to take a defensive end.
And it doesn't always have to be, you have to be the bigger, stronger guy.
You just have to slow them down.
Like it's not like you asking them to hold them out for three seconds.
Just you've got to get better there.
And that is clearly a weakness that has cropped up in Saquan Barkley,
who's by all accounts,
and it's exceptional.
But we always talk about quarterbacks from the perception of,
hey, defensive coordinators are going to adjust to what you do.
You know, can Lamar Jackson keep running around while defensive coordinators are going
adjust?
They're adjusting to Saquan Barkley and they're recognizing this and they're exploiting
that, which becomes a much bigger problem when he's on the field.
to implement past schemes where he's going to be asked of past protect.
All right.
Cleveland, Cincinnati, tonight's actually fascinating for a lot of reasons.
Let's start with Joe Burrow.
You've, you know, you've helped coach.
You know you watch young quarterbacks.
Your grade for Joe Burrow, week one.
What did you like?
What did you not like?
Solid.
I thought it was a solid B minus,
especially if you consider first start, first NFL experience,
no offseason, no preseason.
you know, Zoom meetings trying to learn an entire offense like that.
And Colin, for me, with a lot of times what I like to do early in a quarterback's career
is watch it from the TV copy.
What he looks like?
Let me look at his eyes.
When you watch the coaches tape in the All-22, you can't really get a sense for if a quarterback
is jittery or is he nervous.
But you watch the game copy.
You can see what a quarterback is feeling.
And I felt like Joe Burrell looked like he did at LSU.
Completely cool.
Joe cool, right?
I thought he looked calm, composed, new word.
to go with the football.
I thought he showcased some of the skill set that he showed off when he was in Baton Rouge,
extremely accurate with the football, made good decisions.
You saw some of his athleticism with the rushing he had.
So overall, I thought it was a, you know, it was a solid start for Joe Bro.
And I think this is only a beginning.
I mean, I was bullish on him coming out, had no problem with the number one overall pick.
So I think it was exactly what you wanted to see if you're a Bengals fan.
The only thing that came up short was the win.
And, you know, we saw the way that game ended, didn't get to overtime, didn't have that
opportunity, but he had his team in a position to win a game, which is something they haven't
had in recent years in Cincinnati. Now, nobody thinks Baker Mayfield, if he plays poorly tonight,
it's going to lose his job to Case Keenham. But I will say this. There's an old saying in
our business, radio and television, your bosses and your networks have moved off you about a year
before they tell you. Okay. And my thing is, if Burrell looks with less talent around him,
If Burrow looks better than Baker tonight, more under control, more calm, even if he loses.
But you come away and go, God, Burrow in game two really looks like the guy.
And Baker may win because he's got far more talent, but it's a Baker game.
He unravels a little.
Do you think it is possible that the new GM and the new coach come to a realization,
this wasn't our guy?
And in our division, he's the fourth best guy, and we've got to start thinking about the future.
So, Colin, I wonder if his coach and GM already wonder if he's their guy.
Like, I think there's already a crisis of confidence in Baker Mayfield as their quarterback,
and they want to see him prove it.
And it did not get off to a great start.
We all recognize seven straight games he's throwing an interception.
And this is a game on the national stage where impressions are made.
I mean, look at Kirk Cousins, the reputation he has and trying to shake that, you know, games in prime time,
you know, games against winning opponents.
Well, this is a game that you probably should win if you're Baker Mayfield.
Ultimately, does it impact him long term?
No, it's not going to like the decision has to be made.
It's only week two.
But I think from public perception, criticism,
something he has not handled well,
I do think he needs to go out there with a solid performance.
Now, the Browns would like to see them actually run.
Cream Hunt, Nick Chub Moore,
take some of that pressure off against the Ravens.
They were down 24-6 at halftime,
so they kind of had to air it out.
That's a tough spot to be in.
I think we do have to give Baker-Mayfield a pass
as he's learning yet another offense
in a shortened, condensed off-season.
but ultimately, yeah, I do think he has to at least look the part.
Kind of like I was talking about Joe Burrow, what do you look like?
Do you look comfortable?
Do you look confident?
I want to see that because I don't see on the field when it matters.
I don't see that Baker Mayfield, that's that confidence, that swagger that we loved about him in Oklahoma, loved about him in his rookie year.
I haven't seen that in a while.
So I want to see him get back to that.
And the accurate passer, I mentioned Joe Burrow being accurate.
Baker Mayfield has lost that accuracy that he had when the protection breaks down.
So I think it is a big game for him on a national stage that, yes, will create a perception of him, whether you like it or not, that will matter moving forward.
So Bruce Ariens calls out Brady.
How did it land for you?
Maybe he'd make him feel right at home, right?
That's what he's been used to for 20 years with Bill Belichick, you know, calling him a high school quarterback at practice.
You know, those are the accounts you've heard.
I'm sure, you know, it's a tough spot.
But Bruce Ariens, I think the one message that he sent, it wasn't just Tom Brady called out.
he called everybody.
I think it was more of a wake-up call to the entire team.
Brady will be fine.
He can handle it.
He's used to it.
As I mentioned with Belichick,
some of those other players at this organization,
they haven't been on many winning teams.
They haven't made the playoffs.
They haven't been good.
It would be taught how to accept criticism
and then more importantly,
how to respond to the criticism.
And this team has been told all off-season,
hey, you guys are going to be great.
This is a playoff team.
You guys are golden.
Let's go.
You got Tom Brady greatest of all time.
And as we've seen, you know,
with the offensive,
line play if they don't step up if some of the guys there's a little bit of you know continuity issues
on routes which caused one of the interceptions you've got to you got to step up your game as well so i think
it was more of a call not only to tom brady but it was a message of yeah we got tom brady be not
anybody i'm going to criticize him too but i'm calling out everybody everybody has to pick up
their level of play so i didn't have any issue with it whatsoever and i would guarantee there's
a little bit of tough love publicly what way behind closed doors we're game
planning for this week's game, you're going to come back and say, hey, man, we saw it,
we see the glimpses, we know we have to fix.
And I think that was very much a public play for Bruce Ariens, but I don't think Tom Brady
or anyone else should have a hard time with.
Finally, how surprised were you and how long lasting can Cam Newton and that limited offense
be? Can they win with special teams, defense, running?
I mean, it's not, it doesn't look like 2020 NFL, but you're sitting to yourself, Miami was
supposed to be better than that. And Miami wasn't competitive in that game. And they're going to
Seattle and the line is three and a half four. So that tells you the people who do this for a living
are like, I mean, can the Cam thing last? Not throwing the football. This is the least surprising
thing to me of this early NFL season, Colin. You saw Cam Newton. That's what I was expecting
them to do. He's not going to be somebody who airs it out from the pocket. You throw it 45, 50 games. You don't
run him at all. You try to protect him. That's just not who Cam Newton is. This looks like the
Cam Newton that won the MVP that took the Carolina Panthers to the Super Bowl. So this was the
least shocking thing to me. The only question that matters is can he survive? And I think the
paid said take that risk. I mean, basically what they've done, Colin, you'll know this well.
Like, they've treated them like a rental car. And you know this from traveling all over to your summer
homes, all over the globe. When you go there, you rent a car. You treat it like garbage.
right? You're just going to run it into the ground. You're going to use it.
And then you're going to give it back because it's not yours.
This is a one-year deal.
They're not, I mean, they might say something, but they're not worried about Cam Newton's long-term health.
They are going to drive him into the ground, utilize what he does best.
And that's run the football.
The only thing is that the adjustment, because I think their plan is clearly slow the game down,
time of possession, extend drives, play to Cam Newton's strengths,
let our defense win an ugly game, special teams, as you mentioned.
And I do think there's a chance that now Josh McDaniels has shown that,
kind of the obvious.
We can run Cam Newton with the football.
Now defenses have to prepare for it.
Now watch for the adjustment.
So maybe he doesn't carry 15 times for 75 yards of a game.
He's still going to be an integral part of their run game.
But let's see if they can develop some of the concept.
A, Labar Jackson throw 36 touchdowns last season.
Let's see if that really opens up things in the passing game
where you get guys wide open running down the field for touchdown passes.
That will play right into Cam Newton's strength.
and then we just have to watch it.
I'm sure the Patriots watch it.
And they're saying,
I hope he doesn't get hurt.
And no one wants to see that.
And he's built.
He's bulked up.
He said he can handle it.
So let's see if he can do it.
Danny Cannell,
great seeing you,
buddy.
Talk again.
Thanks for stopping by our show.
Appreciate it.
Anytime, man.
I love the rugged look, man.
Your time and the mountains rubbing off on it.
You got the grub,
looks good, man.
Appreciate it.
The mountains.
Yeah, that's it.
Maybe I should just do the show up in the mountains.
I could hold, you know,
be like bare grills.
I'll just, you know,
be surviving and catching my prey every night needing it.
You and Drew Blassook and hang out.
Yeah.
Bill Belichick admits Russell Wilson's the world's best football player.
Thoughts on that coming up.

Each episode, we pick it here, unpack what went down, and try to make sense of how we survived it.
Including a recent episode with Mark Lamont Hill, waxing all about crack in the 80s.
To be clear, 84 is big to me, not just because of crack.
I'm down to talk about crack on day, but just so you all know.
I mean, at this point, Mark, this is the second episode where we've discussed crack.
So I'm starting to see that there's a through line.
We also have AIDS on the table right now.
Thank you for finishing that sentence.
I don't think there's a more important year for black people.
Really?
Yeah.
For me, it's one of the most important years for black people in American history.

get so wrapped up in the chase that
we don't realize that we are
in possession of the thing.
And we're still chasing it. And we don't
know when we've done enough. Because people
scoreboard watch. Life becomes about
wins and losses. Steve Burns, Dustin Ross,
because you find it important to be a good person
while you hear on earth? Are you a good person because
you're afraid? Because that's two different
intentions, bro.
Absolutely.
And that's two different levels of trust.
I want you to just really be a good person.

So Bill Belichick spent two, three minutes yesterday talking about Russell Wilson. I've said this for years.
Steve Young and Russell Wilson were great, but there were circumstances around them that people didn't acknowledge it.
Joe Montana, Bill Walsh, that's all we talked about and Jerry Rice. And so by the time Steve Young got there, he had no chance.
He was unbelievable. He was unbelievable. But Walsh is a genius. You'll never be Joe Monta.
Russell Wilson walks in with a very popular coach Pete Carroll, Marshawn Lynch.
The defense had a Legion of Boom.
And all of a sudden it's like, oh, Russell Wilson, by year two, it was Russell's team.
He was the reason they were winning.
Pete Carroll had been fired twice in the NFL, 14, 18 in Seattle.
Russell, he had defense.
He had Marshaun.
Russell changed everything.
And so Belichick has faced him three times.
Twice Russell Wilson has beat the coach in the NFL, Bill Belichick, who humiliates young
quarterbacks. Russell has
own Belichick. Should have
beaten him a third time. If not for one pass,
he'd be 3 and 0 against him. That's the
Malkin Butler pick. So, you know, Belichick
doesn't talk about anybody yesterday
on and on and on and on
about Russell Wilson, who Bill faces this week.
This guy's a tremendous
player.
Honestly, I think he's
you know, in a way maybe underrated
by the media or the fans.
I don't know, but I mean, I don't really see anybody
better than this player.
He can do everything.
He's got obviously great leadership, playmaking skills.
He plays very well in the most critical situations in the game,
his decision-making, running, passing.
His passing numbers are extraordinary.
You put him up against anybody since he's been in the league, literally anybody.
Yeah, and there's two geniuses now, Belichick and me.
It'd be nice to get a little support over here on him.
He was great in Rick 1, by the way.
31 to 35.
Russell Wilson was unbelievable.
And, you know, I was saying the other day, I said this Monday,
is I really believe there's just really, to me,
let's just talk good quarterbacks.
I'm not going to waste time talking about Kirk Cousins.
I'm talking about the really good quarterbacks in the league.
To me, there's just two tiers of them.
There's the, oh my God, tier.
There's three guys.
Russell Wilson, Patrick Mahomes, Lamar Jackson.
They do stuff you can't prepare for.
They're absurdly dynamic.
It doesn't matter what you're game.
plan is, and they're all, this is key, they're all getting better. They're all getting better.
The next group is what I would call special. They've carried teams. They can still carry them.
They're unbelievable. They're going to be Hall of Famers. But there's an age issue, a durability issue,
maybe a little bit of an attitude issue, a too many bad halves. Deshaun Watson's not quite,
I think, a little too inconsistent. And that would be my special group, and that is Aaron Rogers would be
the first one in it, Breeze, Brady, Ben, Deshawn, and Carson Wentz.
Everybody else in the league, if I'm a general manager and you call me up, I'd take the call.
I like Garoppolo, but I'd take the phone call.
I mean, they took the phone call.
They were going to get Tom Brady for him.
Everybody else in this league, even guys that are pretty good, right?
Like we think Jimmy Garoppolo is pretty good.
Some of you do, some you don't.
I take a phone call.
I'm not taking phone calls on those guys.
I take a phone call.
The only other player, in fact, and I need about a half dozen more games, that's it.
I need about six more football games.
The only other guy that I think is in that, and very soon is Kyler Murray.
He's doing it, and here's what's impressive about him.
They're not babysitting him.
They're not babysitting him.
They've given him the playbook, carry us.
40 throws go.
It's the Andrew Luck thing.
We're not real good.
Carious.
Teams will tell you what if they really respect you.
Like the New York Giants got Eli Manning.
Good luck.
Here's the playbook.
The Colts got Andrew luck.
Good luck.
Arizona, Kyler Murray.
Here it is.
Save us.
When Big Ben came into the league,
the Steelers did some babysitting for two years.
He didn't throw.
Philip Rivers came in the league.
His organization didn't let him throw.
And those guys are going to get, you know, I mean, Big Ben's great.
But when Big Ben came in the league, the Steelers are like,
want you just, we'll run the football lot, we'll play defense.
Kyler Murray, and again, I'm one of eight people in America that watches all Arizona
Cardinal games, is, there are things he does that are just, you can't, there's nothing you can do.
And he's not close yet to what he's going to be.
My guess is, and Mahomes said this last year, Mahomes is like, I just figured out how to read a defense.
Russell Wilson told me one time.
He's like year three, midway through it, I'm like, oh, light goes on.
And Russell's got, you know, pretty sharp dude, right?
Like, it does take time to see every coverage like three times.
So you can just identify stuff.
To me, Kyler Murray is the next guy to get into that group.
He is really something, man.
