Starting point is 00:00:00 This is an I-Heart podcast. Guaranteed Human. Another podcast from some SNL, late-night comedy guy, not quite. Unhumor me with Robert Smygel and friends. Me and hilarious guests from Bob Odenkirk to David Letterman help make you funnier. This week, my guest, SNL's Mikey Day and head writer, Streeter Seidel, help an a cappella band with their between songs banter.
Starting point is 00:00:23 Where does your group perform? We do some retirement homes. Those people are starving for banter. Listen to humor me with Robert Smigel and friends on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. On The Look Back at it podcast. From 1979, that was a big moment for me. 84 was big to me.
Starting point is 00:00:39 I'm Sam J. And I'm Alex English. Each episode, we pick a year, unpack what went down, and try to make sense of how we survived it. With our friends, fellow comedians, and favorite authors. Like Mark Lamont Hill on the 80s. 84 was a wild year. It was a wild year. I don't think there's a more important year for black people.
Starting point is 00:00:57 Listen to look back at it on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. A win is a win. A win is a win. I don't care what you're saying. Yep, that's me, Clifford Taylor the 4th. You might have seen the skits, my basketball and college football journey, or my career in sports media. Well, now I'm bringing all of that excitement to my brand new podcast, The Clifers Show. This is a place for raw, unfiltered conversations with athletes, creators, and voices that not only deserve to be heard,
Starting point is 00:01:27 but celebrated. So let's get to it. Listen to the Clifford show on the IHeard radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcast. And for more behind the scenes, follow at Clifford and at TikTok podcast network on TikTok. Thanks for listening to The Heard podcast. Be sure to catch us live every weekday from 12 to 3 Eastern,
Starting point is 00:01:45 9 to noon Pacific on Fox Sports Radio and FS1. Find your local station for the herd at Fox Sports Radio.com or stream us live every day on the iHeartRadio app by searching Hurd. Now let's get this party. You're listening to Fox Sports Radio. Here we go. Ready to roll. On a Thursday, NFL schedule release tonight.
Starting point is 00:02:10 Nicks won last night. Will the Sixers finish off the Celtics tonight? Lakers Warriors last night. It's the herd wherever you may be and however you may be listening. Thanks for making us part of your day. Well, well, well. That was something. Pretty predictable.
Starting point is 00:02:31 Said yesterday, I thought the Warriors would win. I thought the Knicks would win. But there were messages in both Ws. Draymond Green looked very good last night. Setting the tone. All the people bailing J. Mack. A lot of people bail on him. He was great last night.
Starting point is 00:02:49 Draymond was 20 and 10 outstanding. But you buried the lead. We know the Jets are opening in prime time, Colin. Week one. Let's go. to that in a second. Well, we said yesterday, and this is something we've said over and over, when a team goes home, their role players play really good. A couple nights ago, Lonnie Walker in L.A. was something. Lonnie Walker last night, nothing. Jared Vanderbilt, nothing. Rui,
Starting point is 00:03:15 nothing. Yet the role players for the Warriors, Jordan Poole was under control. Gary Payton the second was very strong. As expected, when you play at home, the non-stop. The non-year-old. The On stars, your fifth best starter, your first three guys off the bench, tend to grow and play well. You need the stars on the road because you're not going to get the role players on the road and the Lakers role players didn't deliver. In fact, if you look at the box score, it really tells you the story. Field goal percentage, three point percentage, free throw percentage, blocks, fast break, points in the paint, fouls, dead even. rebounds the smaller warriors decisively won the rebounds.
Starting point is 00:04:01 How? Energy, hustle, and intensity. It doesn't show up in an analytic. It doesn't show up in a box score. When you pin a champion against a wall, that box score tells you, that game, that game, that came down to the final shot. Warriors in control, they led by double digits in the fourth quarter for all, but like 16 seconds.
Starting point is 00:04:24 It is remarkable to watch, especially at home, although we saw the Warriors do it in Sacramento. You get pinned against the wall. We saw the Warriors do it last year in Boston, pinned against the wall, and they provide a punch. Draymon was a catalyst. Andrew Wiggins, easily his best game. Finally played with some assertiveness and aggressiveness. Jordan Poole played under control.
Starting point is 00:04:50 So Steph Curry, who's been brilliant, like. he was against Sacramento, Steph Curry got some support, which he often does at home from role players. So the Warriors clearly last night providing another example that the Warriors still have their fastball. But the question is, how many times do they have it in this series? Am I supposed to believe Andrew Wiggins, who played aggressively, will now go to L.A. and play aggressively again.
Starting point is 00:05:20 It's not his personality. Can I get 20 from Draymond again? So last year in the finals, they gave us two big games like last night. Fastball beginning to end. They gave us two of them against Sacramento. This is the first time beginning to end, you got the Warriors fastball. The good news for the Lakers, though, and it's really good news is due to the Lakers size, and we saw it last night, they score less spectacularly. Warriors look flashier.
Starting point is 00:05:51 But the Lakers score more easily, they get those twos very easily. That's why at one point in the first half, the Warriors were humming, and it was tied at 54. But eventually, the Lakers' role players didn't provide the help that Steph's role players did. Golden State has no answers for the Lakers size. So the only way for the Warriors to win these games, and you look at the rebounding totals, when they've out rebounded the Lakers, i.e., they've been hyper-aggressive both ends. Offensive rebounds, crashing the boards, defensive rebounds. Only two games, the Warriors have won.
Starting point is 00:06:30 So you're going to go to L.A. now. You're not going to get that kind of effort probably from a Jordan pool or a guy off the bench or Dante de Vincenza. You're going to need Steph again to be great. But the key is you're going to need Wiggins to be great and you're going to need Draymond to be great because Steph will be. And I don't think the Warriors have any answer for the Lakers size unless they're over the top, aggressive, which they were last night, led by Wiggins.
Starting point is 00:06:55 And I'll say this, that I felt like I was a spectator last night watching a champion, and I was wondering, is this their final punch? Because when they give you this fastball, it's beautiful. The ball movement is beautiful. The shooting and the skill is beautiful. Lakers aren't pretty. Lakers win with defense, protecting the rim, AD, blocking six shots. They're not a pretty team.
Starting point is 00:07:22 Darvin Ham wasn't a pretty player. He's a defensive guy. That's his mindset. That's how he coaches. That's his basketball DNA. Tough. Golden State's been the most beautiful basketball team on the planet for about a decade. Are we watching the end of it?
Starting point is 00:07:37 Their last punch before they reboot. So I sat back. We have a luxury tax coming in now. You're not going to be able to have teams like this. guys play together forever. The only reason we got KD to the Warriors because it's a goofy loophole, that's not going to happen again. So the only way for the Warriors to win, Andrew Wiggins, and I predicted he'd have a great series, nope, he's had one great game. You're going to need that effort from historically non-aggressive Andrew Wiggins. You're going to need that
Starting point is 00:08:08 two more times. Here's Steve Kerr after. This was the best game Wiggs has played. since he's been back. Just the way he attacked, the way he got to the rim, that adds another dimension to our attack. I thought the last couple games in L.A., you know, we just didn't get to the line a ton. We settled for a lot of stuff, and I thought Wiggs did a good job of really being aggressive. We know Steph's going to be great.
Starting point is 00:08:39 We know the role players for the Warriors in L.A. are not going to be great. it's going to come down to Andrew Wiggins and Draymond Green because Clay Thompson has had a good half. So I need Wiggins and I need Draymond to deliver A games like last night. They can do it. Big time, Hall of Fame level talent can do it on the road. Role players can't. And we know Steph's going to be great. All right.
Starting point is 00:09:03 So Anthony Davis got his head banged on, left in a wheelchair. They wanted to get him off his feet. The good news is it's nothing below the waist. It's no ankle. it's no knee. Chris Haynes reporting this morning, barring a setback, AD will be available tomorrow night. I would have gotten him off the floor, end of the third. When the Warriors went up 16 points, 2.30 left third quarter, I would have pulled LeBron and AD off. Instead, you got LeBron playing another nine minutes in the fourth quarter. He could have stopped at 30. Instead,
Starting point is 00:09:35 he played 39. Those nine minutes matter. And AD's getting banged around and may have a concussion. the entire second half the Warriors led by double digits, as I said earlier, for all but 16 seconds. Steph was in a zone every time they got close. 10, 11, 9, step it at 3, step at 2. So you played LeBron nine minutes more than I would have and you got AD hurt more than you should have. Remember against the Grizzlies when AD was grabbing his shoulder and saying, I can't feel my arm? This is the longest stretch.
Starting point is 00:10:05 AD has provided the Lakers without missing a game. This is the longest stretch. So it's a lot of cross-your-finger stuff, and we know Biggs, M.B. G.B. gets banged up. We know this. We saw Yonness in the playoffs get banged up. We watched Memphis's big. Stephen Adams fall apart.
Starting point is 00:10:22 You've got to protect your Biggs. And sometimes protecting them is you get down big third quarter. They have an injury history. Just take them out. I would have done it. They didn't. So you cross your fingers. AD is ready to go.
Starting point is 00:10:33 But, you know, his body, it just, you know, big guys get hurt early. They get hurt often. Beat's not going to get healthier. Stephen Adams is not going to get healthier. AD is not going to get healthier. Janus is not going to get healthier over the next seven to eight years. So the injury report comes out later today. They use independent doctors.
Starting point is 00:10:51 Chris Haynes is reporting this morning, somebody I trust, that he is ready to go barring a setback. Remember, they're not beating the Warriors the next two games without AD. They're not. They had a lead on the Suns a couple of years ago. And LeBron was closer to his prime. AD goes down. Series unravels.
Starting point is 00:11:08 So, I mean, let's be honest. The entire series for the Warriors has been trying to manipulate Anthony Davis. It's not about LeBron. They're not game planning for LeBron at all. They're game planning for Anthony Davis. He leads the team. LeBron was hoping he would have started this three years ago. It took a while.
Starting point is 00:11:27 But now he is the team. When LeBron plays well, it helps. When AD plays great, they don't lose. So as of now, the good news is AD will be available. my gut feeling, I do not know what the line is. My gut feeling if AD plays, Lakers come back home and win, because I do not believe Andrew Wiggins can provide that type of aggressive, assertive style to more games.
Starting point is 00:11:53 I think we got Andrew Wiggins a very rare glimpse of what he can be on his best. And I don't think Draymond's dropping 20 in L.A. And then 20 back in the Chase Center. So that's where we are today. Do you know what the line is? I bet the line's waiting for AD to play. If AD plays, Lakers are favorite. I bet you by four.
Starting point is 00:12:11 The line currently is Lakers by two and a half. AD's healthy. I think it moves a point up. That would be my guess. I think the line is sort of waiting on AD. It's like we won't know at all, right? This is like a weird injury. It looked like the bone of his,
Starting point is 00:12:26 of Looney's forearm hit him. Like, I don't know. Was it in his orbital bone? Well, right on the side of his head? It's a weird injury. Yeah. Well, the bottom line is when they brought a wheelchair in, that told you they wanted to get AD off his feet.
Starting point is 00:12:38 and it wasn't his feet. So what AD is telling you is he's fuzzy. So in the NFL, you see guys wobble. AD didn't wobble. So that tells you it probably not quite as serious. But you don't have a lot of concussions in the NBA. The good news is it's like not a knee, not an ankle, not a back. The bad news is you got to kind of wait.
Starting point is 00:12:56 Guys get fuzzy. Sometimes guys don't show the symptoms of concussions. And then the independent doctors come in and like, dude, you got to sit out. So they're not winning a series without AD. The Warriors will win the next two games without AD. Cross your fingers. it's nothing to joke at. It's a very serious injury.
Starting point is 00:13:11 But I will say the wheelchair. We think of wheelchairs. We all freak out, right? Like that's serious. They just wanted to get the big guy off his feet. That's all they wanted to do. And so the reports were last night. He was moving better and he's going to be okay.
Starting point is 00:13:24 So I think he's back and I think the Lakers wrap it up in L.A. But you pointed out, you know, Anthony Davis has been the guy their game planning around. AD has three 30-point games this postseason. LeBron has none. We have not seen yet that LeBron game. where he puts a definitive mark. He had the 22 and 20 against Memphis in overtime.
Starting point is 00:13:42 But remember, he was absolutely gasped the next game and they ended up losing. Is this LeBron's his last great moment? He played 39 minutes last night. I know. And that's why it's a lot. When they trailed by 16, two and a half to go in the third quarter, my thing is get them off the floor. They did cut it to nine and the fourth at one point. And then Steph came right back and hit a shot.
Starting point is 00:14:04 Yeah. Do you think the war, you watch the way the war is. years played last night. It wasn't about hitting shots. How aggressive they were. Oh, yeah. Okay, you thought they were going to blow a 16-point lead? No. No way. All my Laker buddies on text threads are calling Friday game seven. You've got to win the series on Friday here at home.
Starting point is 00:14:22 You're not winning game seven on the road with the amount of games and minutes. If AD plays, my guess is LeBron puts the cape on, and by the way, that's not a four-quarter game. That is like 37 minutes of the best LeBron available, which is probably 24 points. And it's real close, but I would take the Lakers at home. A.D. in the second half, last two games, kind of a non-factor. The fatigue is real. I mean, Lakers fans have a right to be nervous. This series is becoming what we thought, because the Warriors are deeper,
Starting point is 00:14:52 is that the longer it goes, it does favor the Warriors, because AD has a history of getting banged up. Steph, he's made it through a lot of playoffs. And also, LeBron needs two days rest. By the way, what was AD's best half of the series? Game one, first half. That's right. He had a two and a half day rest advantage.
Starting point is 00:15:13 The Lakers were unbelievable in the first half, Chase Center game one. Second half, AD not as effective. Game two, not nearly as effective. So what's happening to the Lakers is their big advantage of, you know, AD, he's getting worn down. He is getting worn down. So this is why you have to win Friday. Yeah. That is, it is essential for that.
Starting point is 00:15:34 You don't need LeBron playing 39 and 40 on Sunday at the chase. Center. That spells trouble. Be sure to catch live editions of the herd weekdays in noon Eastern, 9 a.m. Pacific. On Fox Sports Radio, FS1, and the IHeard Radio app. Imagine an Olympics where doping is not only legal but encouraged. It's the enhanced games. Some call it grotesque. Others say it's unleashing human potential. Either way, the podcast's Superhuman documented it all, embedded in the games and with the athletes for a full year.
Starting point is 00:16:06 Within probably 10 days, I'd put on 10 pounds. I was having trouble stopping the muscle growth. Listen to Superhuman on the I-Hard Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. A win is a win. A win is a win. I don't care which I'll say it. Yep, that's me, Cliver Taylor the 4th. You might have seen the skits, the reactions, my journey from basketball to college football, or my career in sports media.

And for more behind the scenes, follow at Clifford and at TikTok Podcast Network on TikTok. Hey, this is Robert from the Stuff to Blow Your Mind podcast. Joe and I are both lifelong Star Wars fan, so we're celebrating May the 4th with a brand new week of fun, thought-provoking Star Wars-related episodes. Join us as we tackle science and culture topics from a galaxy far, far away, such as the biology of tontons and wampas on the ice planet hot, or the practicality and corporate business sense of the Sith rule of two. Listen to stuff to blow your mind on the iHeart radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. You're now entering the no bull zone sponsored by credible great rates, none of the bull. So here's the story. Yesterday I floated a brilliant trade idea, and the market responded. It was really,
Starting point is 00:18:02 really next level. But a story today is Jason Tatum and Jalen Brown are now eligible for the $613 million supermax contracts because they both made all NBA. That, of course, when you sign them is going to limit other things. So when I floated this brilliant trade idea, a lot of people push back. But let me ask Celtic fans, you and I know that Jason Tatum's personality has been formed. He is much more Wiggins than Kobe or MJ. He's not hyper-aggressive. You'll know this. I could tell you at six years old what my kids' personalities work. People don't change. Kobe, MJ, LeBron, Bird, aggressive. Jason Tatum's more Wiggins, right? Doesn't grab the game late. That's his personality. Jalen Brown's personality is more Kobe and MJ, but he's the number two. So this thing
Starting point is 00:18:58 doesn't work that well. So this has to be a results, strictly a results-oriented decision. I don't need Justin Herbert to win Super Bowls or Jalen Hertz or Josh Allen. I got my guy. But in the NBA, tandoms win titles. Shaq and Kobe did not get along, but they won titles. Stockton and Malone did get along, didn't win titles, but I'm still comfortable paying whatever it takes because the tandem worked and sometimes winning a title is just luck.
Starting point is 00:19:32 The Raptors won one. They got lucky. The Warriors fell apart. But when the tandem doesn't work ideally, I need proof. I needed a title last year or this year. Or I'm moving off it and I'm keeping Tatum. This is not the NFL. If you have a great left tackle, whether or not he gets along with the quarterback, there's
Starting point is 00:19:54 not many on the planet. You just pay for it. Nobody's working in tandem. Receivers come and go, left tackle. Do you have the quarterback? You pay them winner without Super Bowls. But in the NBA, finals and the Celtics are not Sacramento. They want to get titles.
Starting point is 00:20:10 They got a lot of titles. Yankees have titles. Lakers have titles. Niners have titles. That's the goal here. These are first world NBA problems, Celtics. They've got a tandem. And because of the personalities, it's not that they don't like each other.
Starting point is 00:20:26 doesn't fit that well. But they are so, so good all these players together and they've been working for years together and the front office is good and the fans and they went at home and they played defense. They went a lot of games. But if they get bounced by Philadelphia and they gagged at home last year and lost to an aging Warriors team, what am I paying for? Because once you pay $613 million, there's going to be all sorts of limitations elsewhere.
Starting point is 00:20:55 again, if the tandem worked, I would not need titles. Like I think Sabonis and Deeran Fox, whether or not it would be Supermax, but Deeran Fox and Sabonis, it works. I mean, Stockton and Malone, it worked. I watched Pippin and Barclay. Did not work. So to me, this series against Philadelphia, which could come to its conclusion tonight, is I have a hard time paying 613.
Starting point is 00:21:21 I can't even get to the finals back to back years. This is the Celtics. There's no glory in getting to the Eastern Conference Championship every year. You've got to win titles here. And so I think this game tonight is fascinating. My gut feeling is the Celtics win tonight. I think Boston's going to win tonight. And then I think it goes back.
Starting point is 00:21:42 And I think Boston's going to win this series. I've said all year long, I do not trust Philadelphia in these big spots. I think they're wildly fun. They're much more entertaining. They're loose. They're alpha. I think Boston will. wins tonight. But as I floated my brilliant, and that's what it's being called everywhere,
Starting point is 00:21:58 brilliant trade proposition is $613 million going to make limitations up and down the roster. This has to be a strictly business results decision. And it's not always in sports. If stuff works together, you just sign it and you just cross your fingers going forward that they end up as champions. You're going to keep some bonus in the Aaron Fox, the inside power, the outside court leadership. Keep those guys together forever. They may win in title. You hope they win in title, but it works.
Starting point is 00:22:30 This thing doesn't look like it works to me. It means well enough to win, but their record in close games is under 500. How's that possible? This team's so good. J-Mack with the news. Turn on the news. This is the herd line news.
Starting point is 00:22:46 Really curious how Boston reacts tonight. I think they're going to, what's the line? Well, their favor by two and a half. I think Boston's going to go in there. I do as well. I think Tatum's going to be a monster, and I think they're going to beat Philadelphia. It's going to be six, seven point game. But Boston will look like, like Golden State last night.
Starting point is 00:23:00 Boston will look like the better team, the whole game. Real quick, did you hear from anyone in the NBA, any circles about the Jalen Brown stuff? Any of your people reach out and be like, Howard, you're way off, or I love it. Listen, I try to stay off the inner web and my little iPhone, under an hour a day. I am being told it was people loved it. and it was considered almost by any reasonable expectation one of the great trade discussions ever. That's what I'm being told by my peeps.
Starting point is 00:23:31 I like that. All right, let's go to the first story. Chris Paul had hoped to return to the Suns tonight, but he's officially ruled out with the groin strain. No way, no. No good. He did some on-court work before game five, but he's not ready to play. Now, how about this?
Starting point is 00:23:46 DeAndre Aiton listed as questionable with a rib contusion I thought he was questionable with a bruised ego because Yokic is destroying him. Let me see what the line is here, Coward. I'm seeing Phoenix favored by three. I'd take Denver plus three any day of the week. That's the best bet I've heard in a while in the playoffs. Now, we liked the Warriors comfortably last night.
Starting point is 00:24:11 We both liked the Knicks last night. So you like both road teams tonight. Yep, I like both road teams tonight. Denver wins the series. I'll take the points. and Boston, I don't know if I'd stay away from the bet part because I think it's a close game, but I think Boston wins. All three games in Denver were blowouts.
Starting point is 00:24:26 Both games in Phoenix were close deep into the fourth. I got to tell you something. This Celtics Philly series, the crowd is such a part of it. It's so good. Having Boston fans booed their own team, it was so good. This has to be one of the higher rated NBA playoff games tonight. I think it's going to be fantastic. What is it?
Starting point is 00:24:49 430 tipoff. It's one of my treadmill. I watched the whole first half on the treadmill. A lot of L.A. people are still at work at 4.30. Get home. One final note on Denver. If they win and we think Warriors Lakers is going to go extra, Denver gets like a four
Starting point is 00:25:03 or five-day layoff. If they win tonight and Warriors Lakers go seven, Denver's going to have be very rested and at home for the conference finals. You said 01, Denver will be up on anybody. Could be 02 in the conference finals. Denver wins tonight. I think they get a long rest and they go
Starting point is 00:25:19 home. And by the way, and both the Warriors age and the Lakers age, then have to fly to 7,000 feet and face a rested Denver team. And for the record, I think Denver has a second or third best home record anyway. It's up there, yeah. Yeah, and so. This smells like a KD game tonight. I know Booker's been hot. I know what Denver's rooting for.
Starting point is 00:25:40 Denver's rooting for the Warriors to win tomorrow night. Denver wants the Laker Warrior Series to go seven games, and then they want game seven to go into triple overtime. They want it to be wildly emotional. comes out of that series. The Warriors after the game, if they won on Sunday in game seven, they get on a plane flight at Denver and play Tuesday and they're just shot. By the way, you got to promise me one thing. If the Sun's lose tonight, we're going to spend some time on Kevin Durant tomorrow because all he does is play on stack teams and he does not win anywhere except in Golden State.
Starting point is 00:26:12 I like KD. I'm a KD fan, but at some point we're going to have to drill down on this because it ain't pretty. Next up, the Jets. Will you look at that? Our new lead story anytime it comes to the NFL, the New York Jets, Aaron Rogers will make his home debut, week one, MetLife Stadium. The Jets will host the Bills in primetime. By the way, that's a terrible opening game. For who? So you have the Buffalo Bills, who have a better roster with guys who have been in the league longer than an hour. You have a quarterback that's been there with their O.C. now in the second year, and they're ticked off because of how they were humiliated at home by Cincinnati.
Starting point is 00:26:46 Buffalo is going to play with their hair on fire. Get out of here. Come on. We're not, we're not worried about the I bet you 40% of the stadium is Bill's fans. No way. Do you know how many Jets fans are geeked to finally have a quarterback? You know how long it's been? People last year had to sit there. Zach Wilson and companies. This is a terrible opening match.
Starting point is 00:27:04 I totally disagree. I haven't seen a line yet. I'm assuming, what, Bill's two and a half? Oh, bet Buffalo all day long. Oh, please. Aaron Rogers' first game with a bunch of kids. He's already hanging out with them and throwing. Look, we got video of it.
Starting point is 00:27:17 Come on. He's hanging out he's going to sporting events. It's a same piece of video for sure. seven days. That's a terrible opening. Couldn't they get like the Texans or the Falcons? Oh, Buffalo was, Buffalo got mocked and degraded
Starting point is 00:27:31 for two weeks after they lost to Cincinnati. And you don't think people in small market Buffalo didn't hear all the national voices ripping them? All I see is Josh Allen's playing softball and hitting home runs at softball games. Aaron Rogers working with his new teammates. That's what's up, Cowherd. Jets Bills Monday Night Football on September 11th. I can't wait.
Starting point is 00:27:51 Circle it on your calendars. Oh, no, I think I'm going to watch that here. That's not even a treadmill game. That's like I need to be on the sofa, have the food and the drinks nearby. Like, you've got to really be locked in on that one. Yeah. Total clarity. No cocktail night.
Starting point is 00:28:02 No, no, no. Final story. Lamar Jackson got his extension, but would you believe this? Voluntary workouts have begun for the Ravens? Lamar reportedly absent. The Ravens are installing a new offense behind O.C. Todd Monkin. Now, we don't know the details, but Lamar reportedly absent.
Starting point is 00:28:20 Is Odell Beckham there? I don't know. Is Flowers there? I would assume. I don't understand why he's not there. Yeah, that's a great question. I mean, he's got two new receivers. Is he pulling an air?
Starting point is 00:28:32 Lamarge has signed a $260 million deal. I don't care about that, but I mean, this is like, when you get new receivers, those three days of practices are important. Yeah, Aaron Rogers is already working with the Jets receivers. I think you told us. Have I said that yet? Lamar Jackson, new OC, who he doesn't know, new receivers. I don't like this. I'm downgrading him a win.
Starting point is 00:28:55 Because of a May workout. Remember, I said Ravens. It's not that he got his contract. I don't care. It's that he's got a rookie receiver, a receiver who was hurt last year, as was Lamar was, and he's got Odell back. He's got three new targets and an OC. You can't tell me these three days of practice don't matter a little. Yeah. I'm very curious how the Ravens schedule shakes out. I have bills and Ravens coming back to the pack a little bit. It's early. Tomorrow, should I have my, should I have my my standings tomorrow, because everybody thinks they don't matter. I absolutely think schedules matter. Who says they don't matter? Oh, I see it all the time. Oh, you weirdos. Yeah, I'm a weirdo.
Starting point is 00:29:30 I like schedules. They matter. No, no. Of course the schedule matters. By the way, Sean McVeigh and Andy Reed in September. If you play them both, you're going to go, you're going to lose two games in September. Offensive coaches in September, at least Reed and McVeigh are money. So I have a stat for you. Hold on. I got to pull it up. So Green Bay Packers, for instance, they open with the bears and falcons. So you're like, oh, that's really good, right? Who does? So the Green Bay Packers.
Starting point is 00:29:57 Okay. In the first 50 days of the NFL season, the Packers play two games at Lambeau Field. Just two. 50 days, Colin. And they have a new quarterback in Jordan Love. Seven and a half win total. Where did you get that number? One of the Packers guys pulled it up, looked at the schedule, broken down.
Starting point is 00:30:15 But they do get the Falcons early. The Falcons early. And they get who else early? I think they opened with the bears. Chicago or Green Bay? In Chicago. That's a tough opener now. I'm just saying two home games at Lambo in the first 50 days for a new quarterback.
Starting point is 00:30:30 And remember, they declined his fifth year option and said, hey, let's do a one-year deal. No, you're right. So Packers could be some struggles for Green Bay. I listened to you last year. I had the Giants in last place. Well, that was in August. I know. But I'm saying, as you did talk me in, you talked me in to liking the Jags a little bit more.
Starting point is 00:30:49 I didn't listen well enough, and you talked me into the Giants last year. If the Green Bay schedule comes out, and I don't like the looks of it, I'm putting them in third or fourth. Yeah, no, the schedule, we'll have the full schedule here shortly. We may need to go to Vegas like this weekend and play some futures bets. If I can get that jags over before it steams up, because it's going to go up. Once they start showing Calvin Ridley in practice with Lawrence, that's a good point. These schedules are very, I don't know who's saying schedules don't matter. Like, that's, are these internet people?
Starting point is 00:31:18 No, the same dummies that didn't like my brilliant Celtic warrior trade. So your guy, Bill Simmons? Bill and I are not on speaking terms right now. Right about that, the internet. Jay Mack with the news. Well, that's the news. And thanks for stopping by. The heard-line news.
Starting point is 00:31:38 Let me ask you. Jalen Brown-Tatom, 613 million. They get beat by Philly tonight. Would you pay that? So I just was looking at this, Colin. So with this duo of Tatum and Brown, 2018, they lost in the conference finals. Isaiah Thomas was their best player. They got the conference finals.
Starting point is 00:31:53 The year after that, losing the second round, lost in the conference finals on the bubbles, lost in the first round to the Nets, lost in the finals. Like, there's been a lot of success with these two. I'm going to point out, in three years they had Brad Stevens, Udoka, and now Joe Missoula, three different coaches. I don't want to overreact to that and shove Jalen Brown out. Okay. This is still—
Starting point is 00:32:14 I'm not saying shove Jalen Brown out. I'm not saying that. Well, you're shoving him out for Wiggins and Poole. Andrew Wiggins was the best player on the floor not named Steph Curry last night. One game. Jalen Brown was his second team all-N-B-A player this season. So that means he's one of the four best wings in the entire league based on all-N-A. This year.
Starting point is 00:32:33 Yeah, I put more stock in a year than one playoff game where Wiggins was good. And, you know, I like Jordan Poole and he cashed for us last night, barely. I just, I don't know. I lean toward no, but I don't think it's a worst trade ever. Like, come on. Throwing a draft pick? I don't know. Be sure to catch live editions of the herd weekdays in noon Eastern, 9 a.m. Pacific.

Listen to stuff to blow your mind on the IHeart radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Saturday, it's a showcase of some of MLV's biggest stars as Mani Machado leads to Padres against rival Mookie Betts and the Dodgers, or the defending World Series champion Astros battle Tim Anderson and the White Sox.
Starting point is 00:35:45 at 7 Eastern 4 Pacific on Fox. I know we talk a lot about the Jets and the Giants, but Jalen Brunson is the best quarterback in New York City. He is the best quarterback. Unlike Aaron Rogers, he's going to be around for the next four years. He's better than Daniel Jones. Mello was beloved and iconic and talented in New York basketball loves its stars. The guy got insecure about Jeremy Lynn.
Starting point is 00:36:12 Brunson is a playmaker, a shot maker. smart, resilient, unselfish, you found your quarterback. He creates complete utter clarity for a franchise that never has it. Now, just get players around him that don't need the ball in their hands constantly and that can finish off his playmaking. I'm not sure if RJ Barrett's the guy. You can keep Julius Randall, but he's got to be a three or a four. But this is Jalen Brunson's team.
Starting point is 00:36:40 You found your quarterback. Just keep the ball in his hands. He makes great decisions and find guys are. around in that can shoot. You've got a bunch of size and a bunch of non-shooters. Go find shooters. Finally, the Knicks have substance and somebody you can build a culture around. Toughness, mental and physical. Not a star. Marbury, star, you can't build around him. Carmelo, again, Jeremy Lynn freaked him out. Can't build around him. They're just talented. Remember the old Amari Stodemeyer you got from Phoenix? His knees falling apart.
Starting point is 00:37:13 Another star. You haven't had a lot. a culture since Walt Frazier. Willis Reed, the Busher. It's a culture. Pat Riley gave you some culture. By the way, during the dynasty for the Spurs, do you know arguably their second most important player was off the bench, Manu Genoble? That's called culture. Do you know during the Warriors dynasty, the most important person after Steph has been Draymond Green, seven points a game? It's called culture. Jalen Brunsinger star and like Tim Duncan. like Magic Johnson, like Michael Jordan. You got a star that's the right star, the right catalyst, and you can build around.
Starting point is 00:37:56 Securing himself, Grindr, Villanova, second round quarterback. So go ask Brooklyn and the Memphis Grizzlies about having a star. Set it forever. GM told me this years ago. It's not about having a star in the NBA. It's about having the right star who's securing himself. Coachable, tries on both ends, elevates others beyond himself. Last night's a great example of what Jalen Brunson is.
Starting point is 00:38:25 Seasons on the brink. You already won a series and surprise people. You trail 3-1. You're facing Spolstra. You could have mailed that puppy in. And instead, Jalen Brunson is absolute money all night long. And now you know what you are and you're not. And so much of sports isn't just knowing what you are.
Starting point is 00:38:43 It's knowing what you're not. you know now jalen brunson's the guy here's what you also know julius randall is not a two r j barrett's not a two so go find a two here's tibs after what could you say about the guy he's just incredible you know all-round player great leader great toughness mental toughness physical toughness, ability to think on his feet, ability to lead, ability to connect with people, to bring the best out of people. That's what makes them special. And it's play after play.
Starting point is 00:39:22 Yeah, I mean, Starberry, Mello, Amari, nobody lacks, nobody says they're not talented. How do you build around those? Marbury, oh, he averaged eight, nine assists a game after he got his. Nobody thinks Marbury was a great passer. Mellow wouldn't play on the defensive end. wouldn't even take a step back and shoot a three as the three ball was exploding, and he was a great wing shooter. Amari Stodemeyer, his body fell apart. Like, this is what you build around.
Starting point is 00:39:48 And I say this all the time about the NFL. You can have, you can, San Francisco's got the best roster, I think, in the NFL, easily over about 90% of the league. They can't get the quarterback right. So that's why nobody thinks, that's why everybody, including myself, think they're not a Super Bowl team. Now, Philadelphia's got a great roster and a quarterback. They should be favored in the NFC, and they are. But, I mean, Kansas City, they didn't have a great roster. They played like nine rookies last year.
Starting point is 00:40:13 They have a great quarterback. So once you get the quarterback set, that's why it was always so disappointing how the Indianapolis Colts couldn't support Andrew Luck. They had the quarterback. Okay. What's step two? Protect the quarterback. What's step three? Get the quarterback weapons.
Starting point is 00:40:27 They can never figure it out. Once you get the quarterback, if you can't figure it out, that's on the GM. Don't blame the coach. Because once you get the quarterback, the next two steps are easy. Protect him and get him weapons. So when I watch the next time, I'm like, they got their guy. I never felt Mello was their guy. They got their guy.
Starting point is 00:40:46 Tough. And I love that he's a Villanova guy, East Coast guy. I like he's got a chip on his shoulder. His dad playing the NBA. Dallas let him go. All the stuff you want for a guy you can build a culture around. Manu Genoblee was huge for the Spoozer. Derek Fisher was big for the Lakers culture.
Starting point is 00:41:01 Everybody thinks it's the most talented guy. No, it's not. John Morant. Kyrie Irving. Kyrie Irving bounced around the league, and we always play, it's Lucas's fault. It's Brad Stevens' fault. It's Brooklyn's fault. It's Dan Gilbert's fault. You notice it follows Kyrie around the league. He's a star. Jalen Brunson, Dallas was better with him. Dallas is worse without him. The Knicks were worse without him. The Knicks are better with him.
Starting point is 00:41:28 It matters. He's a winning basketball player and a tremendous, tremendous guy to build around for the next four or five years. So I saw this story. One of the, I'm a stepfather to four beautiful kids. And being a stepfather is a stepparent is different than being a parent because, you know, my stepkids have a dad. They have a mom. I try to be a very gracious host. I try to elevate them where I can, be there when I can, but they have a mom, they have a dad. I love being a step parent, but it's an interesting relationship you have because you're not their dad.
Starting point is 00:42:00 You're not their mom, right? And so I always feel like if there's a sport. equivalent. I always feel like an interesting place to be as a professional athlete. In the NFL, you're a backup, a young backup quarterback to a superstar quarterback who's aging. Like, okay, so in college, Joe Burrow, Kyler Murray can just say, okay, I'm not the guy here. I'm going to go to LSU. I'm going to go to Oklahoma. I'm not the guy. In college, you have way more flexibility. But in the NFL, Aaron Rogers had to sit behind Brett Fav, knowing he was good enough to start for 75 to 80% of the league.
Starting point is 00:42:41 What do you do? I mean, you want to be gracious, but not too assertive. You want to be aggressive to show the management that you're the guy, but you don't want to be disruptive. And so Jordan Love was talking about this yesterday. He goes, it's exciting. I can actually now, like, be a more vocal leader. And I always think this is just the oddest.
Starting point is 00:43:07 That's why what you want to do is draft a quarterback and within a year pivot off like Alex Smith. You draft Mahomes. You say, hey, you're going to learn under Alex Smith. But you don't want Mahomes behind Alex Smith for two and three and four years. So this tells me by keeping Jordan Love behind. And it is a tough spot to be in. By the way, Farvin Aaron Rogers, Jeff Perlman wrote about it, was a very prickly relationship.
Starting point is 00:43:34 Aaron knew he was better than 90% of the quarterbacks in the league. You want to be gracious, but it gets old. You got an old rich guy in front of you that's stubborn, and you're like, I can start for almost everybody. In college, you can just Joe Burrow it and transfer to LSU. In the NFL, you're trapped. So what Green Bay has done, it worked with Aaron Rogers, but I think it's been hard for Jordan Love.
Starting point is 00:43:56 How assertive can you be? How much leadership can you show? So, you know, he talked about it yesterday. He said, it's exciting. I can be the guy, I can be vocal, I can lead. Jordan talking about replacing Aaron. It's exciting. I think there's a lot of energy around it for myself.
Starting point is 00:44:14 And I think I can kind of step up and be a little more vocal and things like that, knowing that I'm the guy and not being a backup. So I think from that aspect, it changed a little bit. Since college and since I've been here, I've improved drastically. Just learning the scheme, learning how to play in the scheme, and just improve myself as a quarterback. and I think I've improved in a lot of ways. And I just try to keep building that,
Starting point is 00:44:37 trying to keep working at it every day. I will say this. Most of the time when you're a young guy and you take over a team, Joe Brew in Cincinnati, the coach is unproven and something's bad. The O line's terrible. You're the Chargers. Anthony Lynn's the coach.
Starting point is 00:44:54 Justin Herbert comes in. The O line is terrible. Teams pretty good, but the O line's bad. So this is the rare situation where the fans are, kind of over Aaron because he couldn't even beat Detroit at home and get to the playoffs. So you're not replacing Aaron post Super Bowl. Like everybody in Green Bay is kind of like, okay, we're kind of over this stuff.
Starting point is 00:45:14 And then not only do you have a coach that's won, a very good O line, a star running back, some winning momentum, but I also think off of last season, there's not a ton of pressure here to be great. I'll say it again. If you thought he was Derek Carr but moved better, I think you'd be overjoyed. We know he's not Mahalm so they wouldn't assign Aaron to an extension, and we don't think he's Zach Wilson.
Starting point is 00:45:41 My guess is, can he be the 15th best quarterback in the NFL? What say you, J-Mack? Fifteenth best quarterback NFL? What kind of timetable are we looking at? Like three years from now? Thanksgiving. Absolutely not. No shot.
Starting point is 00:45:54 That's negative. Trying to do a more positive show. Okay. All right. Well, Jared Gough's top 15. I'll give you that, your boy, Jared Gough. You like him. It's a positive show going.
