It's a Wednesday. Live in Chicago, it's the herd. What a crazy night.
Starting point is 00:03:10 Team Italy beats Team USA at the World Baseball Classic. The Max Crosby deal to the Ravens is called off. And bam on a bayou. If you'd have given me 15 NBA stars and said one of them is going to drop 83 points, he'd have been number 15. He's a good player, five-time all-defense, two-time Olympian, three-time All-Star. So Bam scores 83 points last night. Everybody now is attacking Bam, out of bayou.
Starting point is 00:03:41 Everybody's ripping him. Well, I mean, come on, he got to the free throw line 43 times, and they were felt, first of all, this is what we do in America. The minute there's success, we've got to tear somebody down. 83 is 83, and he's an excellent basketball player. When Wilts Chamberlain scored 100 points against a terrible New York Knicks team, do you realize his warriors were fouling the Knicks to get Wilt extra possessions? When Kobe scored 81 against an awful Raptors team,
Starting point is 00:04:14 the Lakers led by 15 with four and a half minutes left, and Kobe scored 11 points after that. I mean, bam, had 31 in the first quarter. 62 after three quarters. It was totally legitimate. Yeah, do I think Miami doctored it up a little bit late? Yes. But every star in this league has had an opportunity or three to play the cruddy wizards, and they didn't drop 83. So there are just certain things in sports that are true. You don't see pass interference on Hail Mary's in the NFL. You could, but refs get out of the way. If a baseball pitcher's got a no-hitter or a perfect game, in the seventh inning, expect that pitcher in the eighth and the ninth to get the corner,
Starting point is 00:05:03 to get the black. And if a guy's got 62 points and is going for an all-time historic night, yeah, his team's going to probably doctor it up a little bit to see if he can pass Kobe or get close to Wilt. It's just, it's baked into sports. Wilt, Kobe, and BAM are not going off against good teams. The team Wilt scored 100 against. I looked it up this morning.
Starting point is 00:05:28 games under 500. In Kobe's 81 point game, the Raptors were 12 under 500, and he scored again. They went to the fourth quarter. Only a couple Lakers in the entire fourth quarter even got shots, and I doubt Smush Parker was one of them. So, I mean, you know, it did last night, the wizards, listen to the Wizards starting five last night. It's a tanking team. And then I, you know, I think the NBA gets too caught up on dynasties. If they happen, they happen. And two caught up on tanking. I think their big issue is too many three-point shots, too repetitive, and BAM didn't have that many three-point shots, but the Wizards, starting five was 20 years old, 20 years old, 19 years old, and 21 years old. It was essentially a college team, and not necessarily
Starting point is 00:06:17 a great one. So here's BAM sitting next to his girlfriend, WNBA star, Asia Wilson, and Kevin Durant after. To have 83, the first game she's here is very special. You know, the behind the scenes and the workouts and the conversations, they're very motivating. And obviously, you see what she does. And you get inspired every day by that. So I'm thankful to have her in my life. I couldn't believe it when I was hearing in the real time. It's like, you got 30 in the first quarter and there's 70. Congratulations to the band. How much work he puts in.
Starting point is 00:07:01 I looked at the stats. He was pretty crazy. 40 shots, 40 free throws, 23, 80, stuff. That takes a lot of stab with a man. It takes a lot of energy than to cause they put those shots up and also make them. Yeah, I mean, listen, if you have 31 points in the first quarter of an end, NBA game, the coaching staff, when you're playing a terrible team, the coaching staff, the teammates, everybody kind of looks around at halftime, everybody kind of looks at the sheet and you're like,
Starting point is 00:07:30 oh, and then all of a sudden into the third quarter, it's like 62 points. It's like, let's get him to 80. Again, Kobe playing a horrible Raptors team, Lakers led by 15, with four and a half minutes left. Kobe scored 11 points after that. So, and I guarantee it, Wilts got doctored as well. That's just one of those things in sports that we all kind of smile and we know it's true. Nobody's calling pass interference on Hail Mary's. And the umpire, it's giving you the corners. If you got a perfect game in a seventh, eighth inning, they're going to give you the corners
Starting point is 00:08:07 on a three and two pitch. They're not going to go the other way and have a walk. They're going to ring it up. Okay. So the Max Crosby deal sounded like a great deal. And then suddenly, people are saying, well, Eric Dachauk to the Raven GM,
Starting point is 00:08:24 he got cold feet. Well, Max didn't pass his physical. And so the deal's off. So people are freaking out. And my takeaway is if I was the Raiders, I'd stay on the phone, Chicago Bears. But if I had to take him back, I'd take him back.
Starting point is 00:08:39 People break up all the time. I mean, Dak just broke up with his fiancé, Max Crosby just broke up with the Raiders. Who knows? Maybe they'll get back together. It happens all the time. Last year, Miles Garrett's like, get me out of Cleveland. And he went on to have his best year as a Cleveland Brown. Stuff happens.
Starting point is 00:08:56 Listen, Max, this has been talked about. This deal had been talked about for six months. So it didn't catch Max off guard. Max is a pro. The Ravens offered two first round picks. Max isn't dumb. It's a great deal. Especially at Max's age.
Starting point is 00:09:10 He got dinged up last year. Everybody in the room loved Max. Max had a 15-minute soliloquy. He went out there after getting traded and said how much he loved the Raiders and the Raiders loved him. And, you know, people break up all the time. It happens. By the way, the Raiders are a better team or at least a better roster than they were
Starting point is 00:09:29 the day they traded Max. So as Max Crosby, I don't know, I wouldn't be opposed to going back. So the Chicago Bears still need a pass rusher. Raiders should get on the phone. and they're not going to get two firsts. Maybe they get a second and a fourth. So, I mean, it happens. If it was in the middle of the season, at the trade deadline, I'd be like,
Starting point is 00:09:50 whoa, this is chaos. We got nothing but time. All I know is this. Max Crosby next year is going to be highly effective. Disruptive, 12 sacks, you know, 20 tackles for losses. He'll bat down passes. I would want them on my football team. The other thing is,
Starting point is 00:10:11 And I had said this, I wouldn't have traded Max, but once I got two first round offers, then it's a deal. But the Raiders have 11 picks. So the Raiders are going to be so young, Max is one of their only veteran stars. Colton Miller, the left tackle who got dinged up last year, he's coming back. If Max came back and they couldn't find a trade partner, I mean, the whole team, SpyTech clearly knows what he's doing. They're getting very, very young. and so I think it's okay keeping Max Crosby
Starting point is 00:10:44 or getting him back but I mean you say well I mean they broke up it's weird it's odd again it's not in season people go off they go to Costa Rica they work out then he's not going to rookie camps and rookie symposiums he'll show up
Starting point is 00:10:58 if he's a raider and he'll be a relentless pass rusher in a great division so here was Max over the weekend after the trade when he thought he was going to be a Baltimore Raven I bleed silver and black. That'll never change.
Starting point is 00:11:12 And I'm a rated for life. And I truly want to finish when it's all set and done, you know, in a Raiders jersey whenever that time comes. Yeah, I see no bitterness. People break up. They get back together. Miles Garrett hated the Browns. Then he loved them.
Starting point is 00:11:27 Got a new deal. This is the way the world works. And all I know is Max Crosby next year. I'd love to have them on my football team. I still, I thought the bears were a better fit. fit than Baltimore because Baltimore's got to pay Lamar Jackson wants a new deal and Caleb's still on that rookie deal. So I thought the Bears were a perfect fit. Plus, the Raiders would love that because now he's out of conference. I mean, if you really, if you're the
Starting point is 00:11:50 Raiders, you'd prefer to not trade him in conference, certainly not in division. So shipping him off to the Bears to me was a great fit. You're not going to get two first. Can you get a second? Can you get a third and a fifth, whatever. That's where we are today. And J. Mack, I know Jemak, you know, we talk, we've been talking about the LeBron, Luca, Austin Reeves thing, and I'm going to get into it next. I think Jemax's coming around on this is that nobody, I argued this yesterday. Nobody is arguing that Jaden McDaniels of the T-Wolves is a better player than LeBron today.
Starting point is 00:12:29 but I said this yesterday. If you just swap them on their teams, the Lakers would be a better team with Jaden McDaniels because he's a catch and shoot guy, which LeBron isn't, and he's an elite defender, which at this point, LeBron isn't. So LeBron did not play again last night.
Starting point is 00:12:49 And for the second time in like three days, the Lakers beat a really good team. They're now 10 and 2 when Luca and Austin are playing in LeBron's night. That is not a shot at LeBron. It is a fit in an age thing. And I know, you know, I think, I think J.MAC's coming around.
Starting point is 00:13:08 Wait a minute. Let's not make this. You're right. This is not about LeBron's slander, right? This is just a fit situation. Like they've tried it most of this season. Reeves came. People were injured and now, yeah.
Starting point is 00:13:20 Carl Anthony Towns is a very gifted offensive player. I don't think with Brunson, Jalen Brunson's defensive limitations, it's a perfect postseason fit. But on any given night, Kat can give you 32 points and look like the best player in the world. He's a great offensive player. By the way, Austin Reeves kind of unlocked now
Starting point is 00:13:38 with the ball in his hands more. He looked tremendous last night. And Anthony Edwards, quote, unquote, face of the NBA. He struggled. Two for 15. Yep, he struggled. Lakers are back, baby.
Starting point is 00:13:49 Yeah, it was a wild night. In sports. I mean, Italy, Team USA. Bam, on a bayou at 83 points. And the Lakers, without LeBron are like beating the T-Wolves and the Knicks.
Starting point is 00:14:02 And it's like, oh, we've got, and the Max Crosby deal unravels. It was a crazy Tuesday night. In Chicago, we also had the craziest lightning storm for two hours I've ever seen in my life. Pretty, yeah, pretty wide range of podcasts throughout there. But this one's extra special. So how did we actually come up with a name, Hey Jonas, guys? I honestly don't remember.
Starting point is 00:15:48 I think it was on a call about what we should call it. Well, we were thinking I'm originally calling it one of the early names of our band. Before Jonas Brothers was... This is how you guys remember it going down. Yes. I have a very different memory of this. We were talking about a thing, a bit for the podcast, people could call in and say, hey, Jonas. And then I wrote down on my little notepad, Hey Jonas,
Starting point is 00:16:12 and offered it up as a potential title for the podcast. But thanks for remembering that, guys. Listen to Hey Jonas on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcast. Just listen. We don't care where you hear it. I'm Renee Stubbs, and on the Renee Stubbs' tennis podcast, I'm breaking down everything happening.
Starting point is 00:17:58 at Roland Garris, every match, every upset, and what it really takes to win on Clay. Jen she went. I mean, she went down at three to Rabakina, but I'm delighted. She's an outsider to win the French for me. And she likes Clay. Listen, Lena Rubakina is arguably the best player in the world right now, and I actually can win on any surface, because if she's serving, well, good luck. Consider this your court side seat to the French Open.

Presented by Capital One, founding partner of IHeart Women's Sports. Imagine an Olympics where doping is not only legal, but encouraged. It's the enhanced games. Some call it grotesque. Others say it's unleashing human potential. Either way, the podcast's Superhuman documented it all,
Starting point is 00:18:49 embedded in the games and with the athletes for a full year. Within probably 10 days, I'd put on 10 pounds. I was having trouble stopping the muscle growth. Listen to Superhuman on the IHard Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Welcome back. What a nutty Tuesday night. I'm sitting here in a lightning storm for the ages, and I'm watching Italy beat Team USA, Max Crosby deal, Bams got 83, and the Lakers beat the Knicks. And now the T-wolves hammer both without LeBron. And it's very hard to conceptualize. for 20 years, every time LeBron played for a team, he elevated everybody around it.
Starting point is 00:19:36 And now suddenly, he gets in the way with Luca, his best teammate. Austin Reeves is better. Austin Reeves feels freer. Luca doesn't have to kind of worry, although he won't say it about getting LeBron touches. They're 10 and 2 without LeBron when Austin and Donchitz play. And so, and they're much better defensively. It honestly feels like this young Laker team, which isn't really that young, but younger when LeBron doesn't play, it's like they're telling the new owners, hey, we're good here.
Starting point is 00:20:11 We don't need the chaperone. We love Dad, but we're good on our own now. They're playing much harder defensively. And a lot of you won't believe this. Since acquiring Luca, the Lakers' best net rating and best defensive ratings are when LeBron doesn't play. It is hard to contextualize because the last 20 years it was the opposite. But just against the T-Wolbs this season, 3-0 without LeBron, last year with him in the playoffs,
Starting point is 00:20:41 they couldn't even compete. And clearly there's a young guy energy. LeBron is so big, and it's different in football. Like Tom Brady quarterback at 45 because Tom didn't play defense. But what happens in the NBA is even great defensive. players hit like 36 and they're wearing a knee brace and they just can't stop the young guy. NBA is a young man's game. It's never been more international and it's never been twitchier and it's never been more athletic and it's never been younger and that makes LeBron feel really old.
Starting point is 00:21:13 Brady's not playing defense. Matt Stafford's not playing defense. Aaron Rogers not playing defense. So these old quarterbacks, I mean, maybe they don't move as well as they once did, but Stafford and Brady don't move anyway. But in basketball, the old guys, LeBron's now the second slowest guy in the league on the floor. And I'm not denying he's an asset to the league. He's been a star of the league. I've been a big fan.
Starting point is 00:21:37 I mean, I've had people tell me to this day. I live in Chicago. One of the things they say, be nicer to Caleb Williams, and you're wrong on LeBron and Michael Jordan. I'm a pro-Lebron guy. But LeBron has made six all defensive teams. All of them in his 20s. There are very, I mean, very rarely, maybe Kareem,
Starting point is 00:21:59 very few great defensive players in their 30s in the NBA. The game is young. It's a young man's game. And it's never been younger and it's never been more international. And I think it feels like this team is kind of telling J.J. Reddick, telling the new owners, guys, we're good here. And Austin Reeves, LeBron is so great that he kind of, takes up a lot of oxygen, even though he's a good teammate. But it's like if a bunch of stand-up
Starting point is 00:22:31 comedians were in a room and Seinfeld walked in, or the late Johnny Carson, you just kind of like let them talk first. I mean, honestly, if you're an actor and all of a sudden, here comes Sean Penn into the room, or, you know, here comes Denzel or Hanks into a room, the young actors. Oh, those guys can. Yeah, I mean, they, well, I'll just sit down and watch Denzel do his thing, right? Like there is something about LeBron's greatness that Austin Reeves who is, I mean, Austin last night
Starting point is 00:23:02 was unstoppable because he doesn't feel like he has to make sure, you know, get the old guy touches. And I know you think I'm banging on LeBron, but JJ Reddick, you know, it's a different vibe when LeBron's not on the floor and here's J.J. after another win.
Starting point is 00:23:22 I told the guys at halftime to just keep trust what we're trusting and what we're doing. We end up with a 153 offensive rating in the second half. So I thought that end was really good, but really it was, you know, our defensive game plan was fantastic. They executed it. You know, Randall takes 11 shots, 14 points. Edwards goes two for 15. Certainly, I think he missed a couple of those threes that, you know, he can make. But I thought the majority of his threes were tough contested threes. Yeah, so, I mean, it's since Luca was acquired. best net rating, best defensive ratings,
Starting point is 00:23:57 when LeBron's not on the floor. So we got a sample size here. And by the way, the Knicks are really good team. Lakers all over him defensively. And then here comes Ant and the T-wolves. Ant was two for 15. Had one of his worst nights of the season. And the Lakers still aren't a great defensive team.
Starting point is 00:24:16 But man, they play hard. And man, they move better without the chaperone. J. Mack with the news. No, no, no, no, no. Turn on the news. This is the Herdline News. All right, let's get started with the Indianapolis Colts. They made another move, very busy week for the Colts, locking up Daniel Jones.
Starting point is 00:24:35 Remember, they transition tagged Jones. They've removed that, and they gave him a two-year, $100 million deal. But as they say, the devil, the, what is it, the devil is in the details? Yeah. According to Schaefter, 50 million guaranteed at signing. He got what he wanted. Remember, he wanted the first number to start with. the five with his contract. I mean, listen, say what you want about Daniel Jones. He's a very
Starting point is 00:24:59 pushy quarterback wanting his number. And given the, so my take, he's had a lot of injuries. Will his cap hit be about $25 million a year? Is that what your two-that? That has not been broken down yet. It's, I mean, listen, it's, he's got paid either way, but it's the largest two-year deal in NFL history. They love these splashy things. He played the same card with the Giants. It backfired badly. So, Colin, look at his numbers. You see that, right? 8 and 5, 68. On the surface, it looks great. I dug a little deeper.
Starting point is 00:25:27 I looked into his game log. So the two games before he got hurt was not great against Kansas City. Houston, an elite defense, kind of bottled him up. He didn't have any interceptions, but the completion percentage was down, the passer rating, and they lost both games. I'm here to tell you, I don't know if this is a good quarterback. I don't, Colin. Just because he had a good eight-game stretch is not mean he's a top-10 guy.
Starting point is 00:25:48 I don't. I think Sam Darnold and Baxter. Baker Mayfield. I think Sam Darnold's a better athlete and a better quarterback, and I think Baker throws a better ball. I think Daniel Jones is fine. I would say this. Since Jim Ursay passed away, Chris Ballard has gotten very aggressive.
Starting point is 00:26:06 The Daniel Jones deal, probably more than I would have liked to have paid. The Alec Pierce deal at receiver, good player, probably more than I want to play. Sauce Gardner, two first round picks, probably would have given up a first and a third or a first and a fourth. So it says here, we don't know the future years yet. Very likely, his cap hit is going to be under $37.8 million. And that's what the tag number would have been. So the way they look at it is we're going to get multiple years. It'll be lower than the franchise tag or a transition tag. And we can kind of play around with the numbers a little bit. So it'll be closer to the Sam Darnold numbers. But the difference is Sam Darnold, I think, is better than Daniel Jones.
Starting point is 00:26:50 And I think when Baker Mayfield is upright and has a decent protection, he's better than Daniel Jones. But it does feel like the Colts since Jim Ursay passed and his daughters have taken it over. They become Ballard's gotten very aggressive. We're going for it, which I'm not opposed to. I like that. But, Colin, when you get aggressive, you've got to have some hits, you know? I mean, and let's be real. Like you said, Sauce Gardner deal doesn't look great.
Starting point is 00:27:14 You forgot they had to move off Michael Pittman. Now, in hindsight, why would you do that? Is it because Jones, you get paid and Pierce? Yeah. I don't love that. I think Pittman's a solid receiver. Now I don't know. But I don't worry.
Starting point is 00:27:27 First of all, Jonathan Taylor, top three running back. Warren, the tight end is going to be a top five tight end, top three tight end. I think Alec Pierce is really, really good. Don't know if I like him at high $20 million a year, low 20s preferably. But I do think they're skill people. That I don't worry about. I think they're very good so they felt they could move off Pittman. That doesn't bother me.
Starting point is 00:27:48 Daniel Jones is fine. You know, we say this all the time. What does it tell you about Kyler Murray? Nobody wants them. Well, I mean, Daniel Jones getting $100 million. Who do you think is more talented? Kyler Murray or Daniel Jones? I would probably lean Kyler.
Starting point is 00:28:06 But Daniel Jones is coming off a major injury, so I go to Kyler anyway. So remember, Colts moved off the receiver Mitchell after that fumble against the Rams. So they now moved off two of their top four receivers in the last calendar year. Here's the wide receiver room for whoever's starting for the first, like, six, seven weeks. Alec Pierce, Josh Downs, can't say healthy.
Starting point is 00:28:27 Ashland Doolin, you know, a one-track guy just straight down the field. Coleman, Owen, Anthony Gould, they don't have the wide receiver room. Well, they're going to draft one. Probably their first pick in the second round, probably going to be a receiver. Say, like a fourth best receiver in the draft. Interesting. I'm sorry, I think they're at best, at best, third in the division behind Houston and Jacksonville. Well, again, but remember, they have.
Starting point is 00:28:48 Jonathan Taylor, Tyler, Tyler Warren, Alec Pierce. So they're not desperate at wide receiver. They're pretty thin after their number one guy. But I don't worry about them scoring points. I don't. I just think in that division, Jacksonville's offense is better and the Texans defense is better. Tennessee is coming up hard with two good coaches who we like in Sala and Dable. Yeah, I agree.
Starting point is 00:29:16 If I could take a flyer, Colts finished last in the day. Division? I might do it. No, it's not hating. It's just reality and gambling. All right, let's move on to Team USA Colin. This one was a tough one to stomach. They fall into an 8-80 hole against Italy and lose 8-6. Aaron Judge was the tying run at the plate struck out. Obviously, the USA's chances of advancing have gone down. It's all eyes on tonight's Italy-Mexico matchup, 70- Eastern on FS1. If you want the U.S. to advance, Italy has to beat Mexico. They're not happening. That's not happening. Well, Italy just beat the U.S.
Starting point is 00:29:49 What is not happening? Come on. I don't even know who's pitching tonight for Italy. Or, Colin, and this is a little confusing. Mexico needs to score at least five runs. Can they do that? Against Italy. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:30:05 Yeah, they can do that. So Italy win or Mexico wins and Mexico scores five runs. Remember, Benji Gill, the manager for Mexico, said his favorite thing in the world. It wasn't his children. It was facing a. America in the World Baseball Classic final. So, I mean, he was joking, but like, if they were going to score some extra runs at a few, they would do it against Italy.
Starting point is 00:30:27 I didn't know Italy had a good team. I didn't. Did you know they had a good team? No, no. How many of those guys have you heard of? Not many. The manager. That's it.
Starting point is 00:30:35 I mean, again, World Baseball Classic has been awesome. I don't know. I'll let you come down hard on Team USA. Colin, this would be a colossal disappointment. Well, let's just see. Let's just let it play out. But not to have it in your hands. get the win tonight? I mean, I'll be watching
Starting point is 00:30:49 tonight because we need the USA to advance. Yeah. But like all the talk was, oh, Tani Judge and Skeens on it. And we get fall into an 8-0 nothing hole against some Italians. Oh, all right. Bro, come on that. If this were Team USA basketball, you would be crucifying them.
Starting point is 00:31:05 Final story, Kyle, we've got to talk to Cowboys because they want to wedge their way into the Max 2X Crosby story. So Max Crosby back on the table. Raiders are putting it out. We still want two first. Well, Dallas was interested, but apparently they will not re-engage and go for Crosby. Jane Slater of the NFL Network said they've moved on with Roshan Gary.
Starting point is 00:31:30 Listen, Colin, I don't really know this physical situation with Crosby. The Cowboys now don't need him. They've got Kenny Clark, Gary, overshone, Quinn and Williams. They don't need an edge rusher. That's not what they need. And they also have two first. round picks. Dallas is fine defensively up front. They're above
Starting point is 00:31:51 fine. They're actually pretty good. They need a corner and a safety in the first round. Go get Caleb Downs and the corner from Tennessee. Those are your picks. So this is what's interesting. We know Dallas is used as kind of in any trade talk. Well, Dallas is interested and they're going to pawn. Thank you very much. Dallas is interesting. Dallas is now putting it out there. We're not interested, guys. That's right. We don't want to. So
Starting point is 00:32:15 there's no way they're getting two ones. And there's a report from Rapaport that like, I don't know, this was a pretty major surgery. Crosby was on crutches until like last week. And so you show up to a physical, well, obviously it's not going to look good. I don't think they're going to sniff two ones for Crosby. Or you can't even get a one and a two for him. Is he damaged goods coming off this major injury? If you could get a three and a four, the Raiders have 11 picks.
Starting point is 00:32:42 They've got a first, a second, a third, three fourths, two fives, two six. By the way, when you have three-fours, you can turn that into another second or a third-round pick. So the Raiders are fine. They've got draft capital. They've upgraded their roster. They're going to get their quarterback. They have an offensive coach. They have stars at left tackle, tight end and running back.
Starting point is 00:33:03 Raiders are going to be fine. So Raiders are fine. Is Max Crosby going to be fine? Demanded a trade, and now he's got a turntail, walk back into the building. If he gets traded in an hour to the Bears, Max Crosby is going to have a great last four years. in the pro football. You think the bears are not going to go for him offering a third and a fourth, right? They're going to have to pony up a lot.
Starting point is 00:33:24 I mean, the Raiders just lost all the leverage. I almost feel bad for them. SpyTech, Brady, they'll be fine. Can we get Brady on the show to get reaction to this? Well, let's go work on it, guys. J-Mack with the news. Well, that's the news. And thanks for stopping by.
Starting point is 00:33:39 The Heard Lye News. There is a clear distinction by what is tolerated in pro football in the end. I prefer the football culture in America. Play hard in high school, hard coached in college, hard coached in pro football. Not about the individual. It's a we business, not a me business, but this is interesting. So the Eagles agreed to a one-year deal with a sensational talent from Seattle, Tariq Wollin. He's a corner.
Starting point is 00:34:08 One year, $15 million deal. So this guy is $6.4, $2.10. Everybody in the league wants long, tall, fast corners. he's one of the five best in terms of traits. He walked in out of college. I think he was like had six picks as a rookie. He made a pro bowl. He's unbelievable.
Starting point is 00:34:26 And why isn't everybody out for him? Why did Daniel Jones just sign a huge contract? And there's no market for Kyler Murray. Because Tarek Wollin has discipline issues. And Kyler Murray has commitment phobia. And in the NBA, you can hang around forever. not be a good teammate, be kind of a goofball. Gilbert Arena's 11 years.
Starting point is 00:34:51 His talent, everybody looked the other way. James Harden, 17 years, won't play deep. Is he in good shape? Not always the best teammate. Nobody cares. He's got talent. In the NFL, talent does not make you immune to accountability. And Toreet Wollins a really talented player.
Starting point is 00:35:10 I mean, he is a long, I think he ran at the combine, like a 4-2-6-4. 40. Just a burner. But he went lower because he transitioned from wide receiver to corner in college. Another example is George Pickens. George Pickens was unguardable in Georgia, goes to Pittsburgh. They move off him. He goes to Dallas, tears the league up this year. And what does he get? A one-year deal with the Cowboys. Why? Maturity issues. So Jaylon Ramsey, by the way. Rams moved off him. Why? in his prime. Why? He was kind of doing his own thing a little too often. So this is one area where I prefer the NFL. I mean, Stefan Diggs, last three teams,
Starting point is 00:35:57 traded, traded, traded cut. So, and I think that's, it really, that's part of the NFL culture, which relates so well to consumers and fans, is that if you're not a good teammate or you're undisciplined or you're not really committed or you do dumb stuff even though you're really talented oh it will cost you in the wallet in the NBA it doesn't among their many problems it doesn't in fact you may call up the next day at four o'clock and say i've got an ice cream headache i don't want to play and they'll give you a pass i mean that's just the reality of the culture in chicago it's the herd be sure to catch live editions of the herd weekdays at noon eastern 9 a.m. Pacific and guess what? We have some big news.
Starting point is 00:36:42 What's the news? Huge news. We created our own podcast called Hey Jonas. We invented a podcast? Well, we didn't invent it. We just contributed to a... We're the first people to do podcasts. Pretty, yeah, pretty wide range of podcasts.
Starting point is 00:36:55 We're starting a trend. But this one's extra special. So how do we actually come up with a name Hey Jonas, guys? I honestly don't remember. I think it was on a call about what we should call it. Oh, we were thinking I'm originally calling it one of the early names of our band before Jonas Brothers
Starting point is 00:37:13 was... This is how you guys remember it going down? Yes. I have a very different memory of this. We were talking about a thing, a bit for the podcast where people could call in and say, Hey Jonas.
Starting point is 00:37:23 And then I wrote down on my little notepad, Hey Jonas, and offered it up as a potential title for the podcast. But thanks for remembering that, guys. Listen to Hey Jonas on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcast.
Starting point is 00:37:36 Just listen. We don't care where you hear it. podcast from some SNL late night comedy guy, not quite. Unhumor me with Robert Smygel and Friends. Me and hilarious guests from Bob Odenkirk to David Letterman help make you funnier. This week, my guest, SNL's Mikey Day and head writer Streeter Seidel help an a cappella band with their between songs banter. Where does your group perform?
Starting point is 00:37:59 We do some retirement homes. Those people are starving for banter. The French Open is one of the toughest tests in tennis. And I know firsthand because I competed there myself. I'm Renee Stubbs, and on the Renee Stubbs tennis podcast, I'm breaking down everything happening at Roland Garris, every match, every upset, and what it really takes to win on Clay. Jenchian win.
Starting point is 00:39:20 I mean, she went down in three to Rabakina, but I'm delighted. She's an outsider to win the French for me. And she likes Clay. Listen, Lina Rabakina is arguably the best player in the world right now, and I actually can win on any surface, because if she's serving, well, good luck. Consider this your court-side seat to the French Open. Listen to the Renee Stubbs Tennis podcast on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Presented by Capital One, founding partner of IHeart Women's Sports.
Starting point is 00:39:50 Imagine an Olympics where doping is not only legal but encouraged. It's the enhanced games. Some call it grotesque. Others say it's unleashing human potential. Either way, the podcast's superhuman documented it all, embedded in the games and with the athletes for a full year. Within probably 10 days, I'd put on 10 pounds. I was having trouble stopping the muscle growth.
Starting point is 00:40:13 Listen to Superhuman on the I-Hard Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Sun Square Garden begins tomorrow on Fox and FS1. All right, Cal Raleigh, great casher for the Mariners, has a teammate for the Mariners, Randy or Roserina. But they play on different teams at the World Baseball Classic. and when Randy Rosarana came to the plate a couple days ago, Cal Raleigh wouldn't acknowledge him. Okay, we have some video of it.
Starting point is 00:40:43 And Rosa Rana was furious. And after the game, he went on outraged, how ticked off he was. You can see it's kind of uncomfortable. But this reminds me of the 1980 Herb Brooks Lake Placid Olympian team. Is that Herb Brooks, for months, tried to blow up alliances. He's like, I don't care if you're, friends. I don't, I don't care if your rivals, we're going to create a singular unit in Lake Placid. And so good friends, some got cut, some made the team, rivals in college became teammates.
Starting point is 00:41:18 Well, the world baseball classic, you're not getting guys for 10 weeks. So I think what happens in the Olympics, remember when Kobe Bryant went after Powell Gasol in the 2008 Olympics, It's like you can look it up. The language is a bit profane for television, but Kobe in the first possession's like, I'm going to blankety blank right through his chest. And that's the Olympics. And that's the World Baseball Classic.
Starting point is 00:41:45 And that's the World Club. You and your boys can be mates for Liverpool in the English Premier League. World Cup, your enemies. So here is Cal Raleigh explaining the alleged beef with his mariner teammate in the world baseball class. I hate that this is a thing. There's no beef. When we get back to Seattle, he's my brother.
Starting point is 00:42:10 We're family. I already reached out to him. So, you know, it's just a competitive environment. And, you know, I know he would want the same for me when we're on the team and playoff baseball. And, you know, I just have a responsibility for my teammates here right now in my country and emotions are running high. Yeah, the truth is
Starting point is 00:42:32 Cal Raleigh is sitting there and his teammates in the dugout are watching. And Cal Raleigh is sending the message, guys, I'm all in on this. I'm taking it seriously. And so, you know, you hear a lot about pro athletes. They don't care. They don't care if they win.
Starting point is 00:42:51 It's all about the money. No, it's not. I watch the Olympics. I watch the World Baseball Classic. This is a great example of country flag over team, even if you're great friends. Randy or Rosarina, he just can't even, he bends over. He's like, what? We're not boys.
Starting point is 00:43:11 What? No, not now. We're not. So the Ravens, and there's a lot of people out there whispering, saying the quiet part out loud, the Ravens got cold feet on the Max Crosby deal. and, you know, the Raiders got a couple of ones, and the reaction was largely, although I didn't necessarily agree that the Ravens overpaid for it. Well, my take is the Ravens did not generate over the last couple of years fourth quarter sacks,
Starting point is 00:43:44 and over the last five years, the Ravens have blown more fourth quarter leads than anybody else in the sport, so they needed a closer. It was like a team with a great starting staff and a bad bullpen. they couldn't close. And so they got Max Crosby. And do you want to give up two ones? You'd probably rather give up a one and a two or a one in a three. Two ones is pretty rich.
Starting point is 00:44:04 But I mean, the Colts gave up two ones for Soss Gardner. And I think Mass Crosby has far more impact in football games than Soss Gardner. And so they go out now. The Ravens went and got Trey Hendrickson, who's 30 years old. He's not as good as Max Crosby, but Trey Hendrickson's a very good football player. But what's interesting to me, what's happening in the NFL, is that there are two groups in the NFL. Really good teams are falling into two groups. There's either the really very good teams in the NFL that are young.
Starting point is 00:44:36 That's the Seahawks, Denver, the Patriots, the Packers, the Rams, and the Chicago Bears. They're very good teams. And I would say Houston Texans fall into this. Very good teams and young. And then there's this group of very good teams that are getting, in my opinion, too old. Kansas City, San Francisco, Detroit's getting close, and Baltimore. And so, and what did Baltimore do? Sign a 30-year-old pass rusher.
Starting point is 00:45:06 And what did San Francisco do? Sign Mike Evans, a 30-year-old wide receiver off an injury year. And what did Kansas City do retain Travis Kelsey at 37 years old? All good players, not disputing that. but there's two problems with being an older team. Number one, this is real obvious, your guys get hurt more. But the second problem, and the NFL season is now 17 games long, and it's probably going to extend to 18.
Starting point is 00:45:32 You'll want to be young. So the first problem is old teams get hurt more. The second problem is, when they do get hurt, they heal more slowly. You know, Jason Tatum, everybody's like, oh, he's out for the year. Young guys heal fast. They always come back months in advance. So and the other thing is if you go look at the history of Super Bowl champion teams, almost as a rule, your seven best players are either in their prime or going into their prime. That's the Seahawks.
Starting point is 00:46:05 That's last year's Philadelphia Eagles. That's the year before's Kansas City Chiefs. Chris Jones still felt like he was in his prime. Mahomes was going into his prime. you felt like you had a lot of players two, three years ago with Kansas City in their prime going into it. And now with Kansas City, Chris Jones out of his prime. And Kenneth Walker, who they signed, he's a running back. So he's probably actually moving out of his prime.
Starting point is 00:46:34 And Travis Kelsey's out of his prime. And so I think, I think, although he is coming off an injury, Mahomes is still now mid to late prime. So when I start looking at Baltimore, Kansas City, San Francisco, and kind of Detroit, I feel like in the NFL, you want to win Super Bowls, you need more rookies than relics. You need more greatness than grayness. And I kind of feel like Baltimore and with Henriksen and, I mean, if you're going to get an older guy, then get the best old guy on the market. And that would be Max Crosby. So that's kind of where I stand today. is Jemak, is there anything trickling out with free agency today?
Starting point is 00:47:16 I think generally Monday and Tuesday clear the decks. I think they'll be lower end signing now. Yeah, the big one remains, Colin. Kyler Murray. It's just like what? Minnesota's like, is there anyone else? I mean, that seems to be where we are, right? He's the biggest name left.
Starting point is 00:47:31 Obviously, most people care about quarterbacks. I'm just surprised there's zero interest. I wonder if there's other stuff we don't know about. It's what's really interesting with Kyler Murray. And I talked about this 15 minutes ago or 10 minutes ago that in the NFL, you will be held accountable for immaturity,
Starting point is 00:47:50 lack of commitment. Like Tariq Wollin, great player. I mean, he's tremendous talent. But about once every other game, he makes a decision and it's like Seattle's, if Seattle's let you, if you're 6-4-2-10 and run a sub-4-4,
Starting point is 00:48:07 and you're a corner and you get a one-year offer, is there anybody in your social circle telling you, bro, this is going to hurt you. Like, Kyler Murray, here's my question. When Kyler Murray's doing the video games and Kyler Murray's getting called out, I mean, look at some of these guys who have signed, look at one Dale Robinson. He's got, he had multiple teams coming after him, including the Giants.
Starting point is 00:48:33 He has a more active market than Tariq Wollin. How the hell does that make sense? Kyle, Malik Willis, who has six starts, has a significantly more robust market than Kyler Murray. What does that tell you? Tariq, yeah, look at it, Tariq Wallin at the Combine, I was right. 42-inch vertical, 64, 4246. No market. How is it possible?
Starting point is 00:49:03 This goes back to Jalen Ramsey when the Rams let him see the door. he was kind of doing his own thing too often. And they got rid of him. So like I look at Kyler Murray is I always wonder this. In the NBA, it won't hurt you. Talent supersedes everything. But in pro football, like who is in your social circle for Kyler Murray saying, bro? Like Johnny Mansell, remember at some point during Johnny Mansell rookie year?
Starting point is 00:49:28 Like a parent came out. Like his dad or somebody came out and said, he's lost. He's not going to listen to us. And, I mean, that was a signal to the rest of the league is he's unhinged. But I mean, Kyler Murray, for years, there were commitment issues. Did he never address it? Did anybody in his social circle raise his hand and go, bro, you're going to kill yourself in the open market? You can't do that or you'll get kicked out of the social circle.
Starting point is 00:49:52 And then you can't get the free ride for hanging with Kyler and the cars and the dinners and all trips to Vegas. Like, that's how it works. You know, you're in my circle. You can't criticize me. You can't critique me. They don't want that, Colin. So in the NFL, being a good guy matters. Malik Willis,
Starting point is 00:50:06 legendarily great kid. Great kid. Multiple offers. He has six pro starts. Multiple offers. Six pro starts. By the way, Tua is a good guy. The Atlanta Falcons are talking to Tua.
Starting point is 00:50:20 How about Jets going after Gino Smith? Let's bring Gino Smith back. Who saw Gino last year? Kirk Cousins. Unplayable. So it is interesting when Tarek Wollin and Kyler Murray, these are really, really sensationally talented athletes. And there's no market for them.
Starting point is 00:50:38 I mean, this is the signal for all you agents out there and all you parents out there. You go be a basketball player. It won't matter. In the NFL, I mean, Tariq Wollin is, to me, I am shocked. His play fell off a little last year. His play fell off a little bit. They have young guys who are cheaper. Real quick, the other one under the radar, Patriots were linked to A.J. Brown forever.
Starting point is 00:51:01 Patriots just went and got Romeo Dobbs. So that takes them out of A.J. Brown. Like Romeo Dobbs is going to be the guy that gotten paid? I just wonder, is A.J. Brown going to be back in Philly next year? I don't know where else he could land. I can't find a spot. Again, I think A.J. Brown, and I don't think, again, not saying he's a bad guy, but how many people are calling Howie Roseman? I mean, how many, you need a trade part?
Starting point is 00:51:25 We can say, why won't Philly get rid of him? Who's offering? Could Max Crosby go to Philly? and then A.J. Brown to the Raiders with Mendoza in some kind of deal. Crosby is one of the most respected, well-liked players in the last 20 years in the league. So somebody's going to go get him. He is great for the locker room. He's all about team, winning, toughness, play-through injuries. So he'll have a huge market.
Starting point is 00:51:50 That's more of a passing of a physical thing. All right. Albert Breer is stopping by an hour number two. We're live in Chicago. It's the herd. Hey guys, it's us. The Jonas Brothers. I'm Joe. I'm Kevin. And I'm Nick. And guess what? We created our own podcast called Hey Jonas. We invented a podcast?
Starting point is 00:52:14 Well, we didn't invent it. We just contributed to it. We're the first people to do podcasts.
