Starting point is 00:02:37 Here we go. It is a Thursday. Lamar Jackson returns tonight to the NFL. Austin Reeves. What to make of that. Dodgers Jays. We know what to make of it. L.A.'s in big trouble. Live in Chicago. It's. the herd, wherever you may be, however you may be listening. Thanks for making us part of your day. A Halloween Eve show, tip of the cap again to the people at our company that make our set look the way it does.
Starting point is 00:03:10 We always appreciate that. One hour from now, Greg CoSnell stops by. You know, when they were beating the Reds and the Phillies, and they were beating the Brewers, Jay Mack, the Dodgers' bats had a way of making teams, pitching staffs and bullpents uncomfortable. that is exactly now what is happening to the Dodgers bullpen and the Dodgers starting staff. So here's where we start today.
Starting point is 00:03:35 How about Trey? That was unbelievable. The best thing for baseball, honestly, privately is the Dodgers struggling, being on the brink. Because last year, when they dominated the Yankees in the World Series, a minute later, it's like the sports uneven. This is not fair. There's a massive financial gap. It's just not fair. It felt like KD to the Warriors.
Starting point is 00:03:54 first year, they go 16 to one in the playoffs. So the Big Ten winning a nanny or the Chiefs getting blown out in Super Bowls. Big picture gives everybody else hope. This Dodger team was flawed all season long. We talked about it. They blew 26 saves. Mookie Betts, who had a great September, not hitting now, didn't hit until September. He had an injury or an illness early.
Starting point is 00:04:18 He's been off all season. Blake Snell opens the game with a couple of fastballs. Both get Jackson. out. So from the very beginning, it was the Blue Jays bats, making the Dodgers uncomfortable. Blake Snell, after giving up two bombs in the first inning, had to abandon his fastball. So again, what the Dodgers did for three series is what the Jays are doing to the Dodgers now. And Trey Y's Savage, amazing. Another amazing story. This kid, wasn't in Major League Baseball when the season started.
Starting point is 00:04:59 He was in single A ball. There used to be low A, high A. It's now just single A ball. It's basically like really slightly better than great high school baseball. You don't stay in a hotel. You have a host family. Last night, struck out 12. Only one Dodger got into scoring position.
Starting point is 00:05:20 For the record, Otani, Bettson Freeman held hitless. In fact, the last two games, the Dodgers and the team are hitting a buck 64. Their MVP's are MIA. And here is Trey Yassavage finishing off his night in the seventh right here. Chopper to third, Clement to second, over to first, double play, a World Series masterpiece from 22-year-old Trey Yassavage. He struck out every Dodger at least once. we thought the Dodgers would hit their way to a title, yet they've scored 64 total runs in the playoffs.
Starting point is 00:06:03 The Jays are at 100 and counting, and no baseball team has repeated since the Derek Jeter Yankees. And there's a reason for it. It's exceptionally hard, more than any sport. I mean, you've got to get your starting pitching in sync. You've got to get your timely hits at the perfect time. You've got to fix your batting order, right guys in front of the right guys, top-tier pitching, bullpen's got to be good enough. So the Dodgers may have built
Starting point is 00:06:33 the perfect Major League Baseball machine, but maybe they forgot to put in the clutch. Because the team right now that is making the other team uncomfortable, it's Toronto. And here is Dave Roberts on making game six adjustments in Canada. I'm not sure if it's mooking the two, mooking the three, Freddie and the three. I'm not sure. But at the end of the day, regardless of who we run out there or what construct, we still got to take good at bats, all of us. And so that's what I'm betting on. Yeah, the Dodgers had a lot of bad at bats last night.
Starting point is 00:07:10 But when you get one guy in scoring position, is it just the Jay's pitching? Is part of it pressure? Whatever it is, it's working. First inning on, when you force Blake Snell to abandon his fastball, you're officially in the Dodgers wheelhouse. You're in the Dodgers head. Okay, he did it again. No Luca, no LeBron.
Starting point is 00:07:33 In fact, no Aunt Edwards. And the star of the show, buzzer-beater, was Austin Reeves of the Lakers. 28 points and 16 assists. What are we to make of him? Well, first of all, he's a great American sports story. First year in the NBA, he averaged 7, then 13, then 16, then 20. Suddenly he's averaging 34. My guess is it's going to go down a little bit.
Starting point is 00:07:54 It is the best case scenario for the Lakers. They can show him off to the NBA. He's getting to the free throw line 12 times. He's always created contact. The issue isn't, is he a good player? It's a very good player, right? The question is, can you maximize his game with the Lakers? He needs the ball in his hands.
Starting point is 00:08:16 You should see his numbers playing with LeBron and without him. He's a different player entirely, C plus to A-minus. So what do you do with him? He's showing the league, maybe Houston, the Celtics, Miami. No, I can initiate offense. I'll get to the free throw line. I'm physical. I'll work hard on the defensive end, albeit it won't be great.
Starting point is 00:08:37 Is he too good to trade, or is he the perfect trade piece? Again, Luca needs the ball to dominate, and Luke is arguably the second best player in the world, some nights the very best. Maybe Austin Reeves is thinking, I want the ball. I want this to continue. So watching him last night, here's what I kept thinking watching Austin Reeves. Are the new owners, this is not the bus family.
Starting point is 00:09:03 The bus family needed LeBron for six and a half years. They needed him. He was selling tickets. They were a mess pre-Lebron. Remember? End of the Kobe days. They weren't very good. They were bad all the time.
Starting point is 00:09:16 Right? We remember Kobe's last game, 60 points. A lot of forgettable years. Are the new Lakers? owners who have a lot of money and it's about the long term, not selling tickets necessarily, thinking to themselves you know,
Starting point is 00:09:31 maybe it's LeBron we don't need. I mean, LeBron reportedly in his fields because he hasn't gotten the contract extension. My take is the only two absolutes going forward are Luca and JJ Reddick. This is no longer a league of a big three.
Starting point is 00:09:47 It's a duo league. But maybe the Lakers are a big three. Luca, J.J. Reddick, and Austin Reeves. I mean, this is what happens. You're given opportunities. Somebody takes a day off work. Somebody's sick.
Starting point is 00:10:03 You step in. With no Luca and no LeBron, JJ Reddick is leaning on him. He gets the free throw line, always has. Initiates contact, always has. Hitting his shots, it usually does. So this is one of those moments. The new owners are looking at this,
Starting point is 00:10:20 and my take last night was, got the kids first or second in the league. Nobody plays defense early in the season. So everybody's numbers are a little glossy. A lot of guys shooting 55%. I get it. But it's impossible not to pay attention, right? And these new owners, they're still assessing the situation.
Starting point is 00:10:38 They made it very clear. JJ Reddick and with a contract extension, Luca, they're the future. But it's not a big three league. It's now a duo league. And Austin Reeves, when you compare him to LaRont, is much cheaper. younger, healthier. And let's be honest, less maintenance. Here's JJ Reddick on Austin Reeves last night.
Starting point is 00:11:05 That guy is going to show up in the big moments. It's not surprised. He's done that many times in his career. He's done that many times since I've been his coach. I feel very comfortable with him making decisions at late game. And Austin Reeves scored half of his points against Jaden McDaniels, who's a elite defensive player. So it's been very, very impressive, and it's just opportunities.
Starting point is 00:11:30 You know, somebody misses work, somebody misses a game, you step in. But if it was the old owners, the bus family, I don't think this would be as significant. They love Austin Reeves. They've paid him nothing, and he's very productive. But the new owners look at the world differently. When somebody buys a company, they see the world differently. They don't cling to stuff. usually they don't want old and higher maintenance.
Starting point is 00:11:54 They like young, cheaper, healthier, coachable. Austin Reeves is a very attractive player to any new ownership group. That's what I saw last night. And Jamek, I know how much you love Austin Reeves, but it is interesting. As I'm watching it, I'm thinking about the new ownership group, how they view him. And it's like cost, dependability, health,
Starting point is 00:12:21 maintenance. I mean, there is something about LeBron. The downside to being an older star athlete is you can suck the oxygen out of a room a little bit. Right? Austin Reeves is like, it wasn't for the headband. You never pick him up. And there is something to be said about a new coach, a young player. It's just, it's fascinating. Yeah. You know, I don't know if I said this to you on air or off, but I look at Austin Reeves next to Luca Donchish and I'm like, why can't Austin be Kyrie Irving. Kairi and Luca went to the NBA finals two years ago. And I'm not saying Austin Reeves is Kyrie Irving.
Starting point is 00:12:55 But he can be that type of player. But you're missing the big part of that. Why did Luca and Kyrie work? Because they had a long, devastating front line. They're both bad. That's not, oh, yeah, that's why. Well, you can move off LeBron. You bring in Biggs, right?
Starting point is 00:13:15 Well, again, Luca and Austin Reeves are not Kyrie and Luca. with Dallas's front line and size. DeAndre Aiton's a bad defensive player. It works only because of what Dallas can provide in rim protection. Having Luca and Austin Reeves is fun. It's not beating the best teams in the West, who mostly all do have rim protection and better wings. Again, it's the first week of the NBA season, the first two weeks.
Starting point is 00:13:44 Nobody's playing defense. It's a lot of fun. You can't overreact. But I guarantee you the new owners, just anybody out there that's ever bought a new business or you're part of a new company, you view it differently than how the old people viewed it. And the bus family, they felt kind of tied at the hip with LeBron, right? Like they had sacrifices. They brought him in. These new guys are like, hey, we like him.
Starting point is 00:14:07 We have no connection to him. Yeah. I love Austin Reeves. You know, I've been on that bandwagon for a while. Everybody's saying, oh, we could ship him for Janus. It doesn't seem realistic. Colin, the team I heard last night that is interested in Austin Reeves, keep an eye on the Utah Jazz. Lori Markinen is a budding star.
Starting point is 00:14:27 He's younger than Reeves. He's a big. I think he had 50 points earlier this week. It was outstanding in the summer. Markinen's been a great score since he walked into the league. Big guy that can run the floor. I would keep an eye. You know, you get your pair a couple euros, Luca and Larry Markan.
Starting point is 00:14:40 I know he's not an awesome defender, but I would just keep an eye on that going forward. Again, I'm not trying to trade Austin Reeves, but I just put that on your radar. All right. One hour from now, Greg CoSell. Very interesting NFL weekend. Bill's Chiefs highlights it. Lamar plays tonight. Be sure to catch live editions of the herd weekdays in noon Eastern 9 a.m. Pacific on Fox Sports Radio, FS1 and the IHeart Radio app. Hey, is Kavino and Rich from Fox Sports Radio? Hey, it's us to Jonas Brothers, and guess what? We have some big news. What's the news, huge news? We created our own podcast called, Hey Jonas, we invented a podcast? Well, we didn't invent it. We just contributed to it.
Starting point is 00:15:47 First people to do podcasts. Pretty, yeah, pretty wide range of podcasts. We're starting a trend. But this one's extra special. So how did we actually come up with a name, Hey Jonas, guys? I honestly don't remember. I think it was on a call about what we should call it. Well, we were thinking I'm originally calling it one of the early names of our band.
Starting point is 00:16:07 Before Jonas Brothers was... This is how you guys remember it going down? Yes. I have a very different memory of this. We were talking about a thing, a bit for the podcast, where people could call in and say, hey Jonas, and then I wrote down on my little notepad, Hey Jonas, and offered it up as a potential title for the podcast.
Starting point is 00:16:25 But thanks for remembering that, guys. Listen to Hey Jonas on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcast. Just listen. We don't care where you hear it. What's up, fam? It's Isaiah Thomas. And I'm CJ Toledano, and our podcast Point Game is about defying the odds. Like LeBron heading into the playoffs without Luca and Austin Reed. And finding ways to win no matter what.
Starting point is 00:16:45 He's the smartest player to ever play the game. His IQ is at a level that we've never seen before. And he knows without Luca and Austin Reeves, I got to manipulate the game. We get a player's perspective on the challenges of the playoffs. I think Joker's going to be exhausted this series because when they don't have Rudy in the lineup, he has to really guard guys like Nas Reid.
Starting point is 00:17:07 He has to guard Julius Randall. And then he has to give us everything he gives us on the night-to-night basis on offense. And when IT's friends stop by like Quentin Richardson, we dive into some playoff history too. Steve Nash will get that thing. That man, hell get the flying. He running up the court, licking his fingers why he got the ball.
Starting point is 00:17:24 Like, you go through a training camp with that, Isaiah. You figure it out real quick. Get your ass up and down the court, and you're going to get the ball. So listen to Point Game on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Agency, the ability to know that we're the experts in our own body. On the podcast, cultivating her space, Dr. Dom and Terry Lomax create a space where black women can show up fully and be heard. I wholeheartedly think, you know, you hit 30.
Starting point is 00:17:54 You shouldn't have to share a room with anybody. Mm-hmm. From navigating friendships and healing to setting boundaries and prioritizing your mental health. These are real, honest conversations. We don't always get to have out loud. Totally unreasonable with different parts of life, right? Like, oh, have all three meals and make sure you're mindful during all of them? Absolutely not.
Starting point is 00:18:15 During one meal, I'm standing. That's not realistic. I'm standing and handing my children food. Because healing, empowerment, and resilience aren't just ideas. They're practices. And this Mental Health Awareness Month, there's no better time to pour back into yourself. Listen to cultivating her space on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcast. This week on Crimless, we're joined by our first ever guest.
Starting point is 00:18:46 Sorry. our first ever human guest. I don't think I could be in the same room with Shamrock the parrot. I'd be too nervous. That's right. The very funny Will Ferrell joins Rory Scoble and me, Josh Dean, for an episode dedicated to the many crimes committed by people also named Will Ferrell. They called to his fellow officer for the nippers.
Starting point is 00:19:08 What are the nippers? Very good question. No, I was thinking, would that be a good name for like a salad dressing? Simple assault. And it's a play on word, salt? Maybe not. I say we invest and we see. There's only one way to know.
Starting point is 00:19:21 This did not amuse the cops. By the way, normally the cops are amused, but this did not abuse the cops. Will even comes clean about some of his own crimes. I didn't get caught. You know why? If you don't want to be suspected of anything, you whistle as you walk. Listen to crime lists on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcast, or wherever you get your podcast. All right.
Starting point is 00:19:48 You're now entering the no bull zone sponsor by credible. rate, Rates, none of the bull. So I saw something yesterday. I remember years ago reading a story about Jerry Jones and his wife, I think her name is Gene, and she was saying, oh, Jerry,
Starting point is 00:20:03 you just can't get out of your own way sometimes. You know, Jerry loves the publicity. He likes to talk after games. He's on Landman in an acting role. So he said something yesterday, and I thought, oh, this is just not going to land well. This is not going to land well.
Starting point is 00:20:16 So he was talking to the Wall Street Journal. And Jerry Jones had a quote, as he was talking to the Wall Street, generally goes, there's a hundred billion present value with gas out there. That's why I'm talking to you on the telephone rather than trying to fix our defense with the Cowboys. Yeah,
Starting point is 00:20:30 that's just not going to go over that well. Listen, I want my GM grinding tape and studying the cap sheet. Howie Roseman, trade deadline, just picked up a slot corner yesterday. Less need a couple of days earlier. They got a corner.
Starting point is 00:20:48 Jerry was checking out natural gas locations in the Pacific. And this is why a lot of billionaires, for the record, end up on boards instead of running a singular company. They're distracted. They're busy. But I mean, the way, the Cowboys are strangely, they're very good at making big deals. I like the Micah deal. I like the George Pickin deal.
Starting point is 00:21:11 George Pickens' deals, excellent. They're also very good on their first and usually second round picks. But I would argue, if you look at the Super Bowl favorites right now, It's Green Bay. It's, you know, Kansas City or a Detroit. They're very good fourth round, fifth round, six round, and getting their number one picks right. So Pooka Nakua, less need, he's not talking about oil reserves,
Starting point is 00:21:34 gets Pooka Nakuwa in the fifth. He's a star. Kiron Williams running back in the fifth, he's a star. Undrafted left tackle. Not a lot of those exist. Higgs be the tight end, fourth rounder. That's why they can go pay for Devante Adams, because Pooka Nuku is free for three or four years.
Starting point is 00:21:52 So I think this league, there's a lot of minutia to be a good general manager in this league, a ton of minutia. The Cowboys do a very good job on the big stuff. I will defend the Micah Trade forever. In fact, I would say the best draft pick the Cowboys have made is not a first round draft pick. It's Dak Prescott. And they got Dak Prescott in the fourth round.
Starting point is 00:22:13 And the reason they were able to extend and pay that O line for all those years is they were paying DAC nothing for four years. Nothing. He was free, and he was winning double-digit games. So of all the draft picks, it's not getting Tyron Smith or Zach Martin or Micah. Dax's their best draft pick as a fourth rounder. Brock Purdy, I don't think he saved the Niners, but after the Trey Lance Fiasco, they were desperate to get a quarterback that they could
Starting point is 00:22:44 monetize at a beneficial level, and there's no more. more beneficial level than getting the last player picked to be your starting quarterback for four or five years. Then you can go pay for a Mac Jones to be a backup. So so much of this league is minutia. And when I read that, I think, you know, is Jerry really the general manager? Is he really the acting general manager? I don't know. But running several billion dollar companies simultaneously that aren't related at all does not feel ideal. Again, Kansas City, Detroit and Green Bay. teams that draft and developed and fine gems, fine gems are Super Bowl favorites.
Starting point is 00:23:26 So the big stuff I don't worry about. They got their quarterback, they got that right. They get their first round picks right. George Pickens, Micah Trade, they get that stuff right. It's the stuff in the middle. Nobody talks about that helped build the Rams. I mean, Trey Smith, Tyreeke Hill, late rounder for Kansas City, Trey Smith, J. Mack with the news.
Starting point is 00:23:48 No, no, no, no, turn on the news. This is the herd line news. Think about what the Chiefs did with Tyreeke Hill. Later round pick didn't pay anything. And instead of paying him the big buck, big bucks shipped him off and get five more picks. Tyreek Hill, not, Mahomes is their best draft pick ever. Second is Tyreek Hill, who got great production, never had to pay him,
Starting point is 00:24:10 then moved him and got five or six more picks. That's the way to play the chess game in the NFL. I like it. I like it. All right. Let's get started with those chiefs, Colin. the biggest game of week nine. They are going to Buffalo.
Starting point is 00:24:23 We talked about it yesterday. The bills kind of own them in the regular season with a four and one record. We won't talk about the playoffs. You already know the answer. Mahomes talked about that rivalry and the thin margin saying every single game comes down to one play here or there
Starting point is 00:24:38 and that they have made them. I think it comes down to players making plays in big moments. So some illuminating stuff there from Patrick Mahomes. You want the real source. Here it is, Colin. In the high leverage games,
Starting point is 00:24:52 Josh Allen carries the team. Okay? Against the Chiefs, he averages over 10 carries per game by far more carries than he does in any other game. So you remember that Ravens game in week one? Josh Allen had 14 carries.
Starting point is 00:25:07 Big game, they needed it. He hasn't sniffed that since. Against the Patriots, rivalry in the division, nine carries. Last week against the Panthers, three. Expect Josh Allen to put the team on his back and try to take them to victory like he did last year in Buffalo.
Starting point is 00:25:23 Yeah. Listen, it's an interesting line based on what we've seen from the two teams. There are two lines this week that are fascinating. How are the Colts only a three-point favorite? They have been the most efficient offense. The two best teams, I've watched the Steelers play, the Seahawks and the Packers, pulled away and dominated the second half. The Pittsburgh Steelers against good teams have about a half in them.
Starting point is 00:25:47 I could argue the cults right now are playing better than Seahawks and GreenVet. And so that line I don't get, and I don't get this one. Kansas City has the much better defense. Situationally, we love this coach. The weather's not a factor. And offensively, they've got so many more weapons for Mahomes to throw to. I like Kansas City by a touchdown. By a touchdown.
Starting point is 00:26:09 I think there's a lot of scoring. Wow. So the bills with Josh Allen, I'm looking back in the archives here, they haven't lost a game as a home underdog in like five years, Colin. This is a rare spot for them. Now, as a favorite against the Patriots, you know, they lost. They'll lose as a favorite. But as a dog, I don't know, man.
Starting point is 00:26:29 You don't think McDermott's going to be yelling at the team. Hey, nobody respects you. Okay, you lost to the Falcons. It's so easy for him to get this team amped up. I know, no, Ed Oliver, that's big. I think the amped up stuff is great for about a series. You know what I mean? Tomlin has thrived off that for that.
Starting point is 00:26:46 That's right. For about a half and then watch the Steelers in the second half of seasons. They've been terrible down the stretch last. And they've been terrible in the second half this year against good teams. I think all that raw, raw stuff, you see it in college. Teams run through the smoke. It's good for about a series. Then you've got to kick butt.
Starting point is 00:27:04 Then you've got better players. So I just, I, I, I, so by the way, you've got one of their primary defenders is not playing. I think Kansas, Kansas City, it is. Kansas City in these spots, I just trust the coach, the quarterback, the schemes, spags. I like Kansas City. Have you heard anybody taking Buffalo here? Or is everybody and their mom on Kansas City? At two and a half, I would say Kansas City.
Starting point is 00:27:31 Everybody's loaded up on the Chiefs here. I just want to remind people, I know Kansas City beat Detroit and they hammered the Raiders and they beat Marcus Marriota. They went to Jacksonville, looked kind of good but not great. let the Jags move up and down the field against them at will, and they lost the key to Jacksonville. Okay? The idea that they're going into Buffalo and winning by a touchdown,
Starting point is 00:27:52 hey, listen, how's this? How's this? We'll make a fun bet. If the Chiefs win this game, I will stop bashing them for the rest of the regular season. Deal? Sure. I will not say anything negative about the Chiefs
Starting point is 00:28:03 the rest of the season if they go in and win this game. I don't know how I'm going to hold myself to that, but I'll try. All right, let's move on, Kyle. Pittsburgh Steelers. You are hot on these Steelers. They're four and three, a little Fugazi of a record. You know, they got a big one this weekend.
Starting point is 00:28:20 Interestingly, Mike Tomlin, I know we don't want to use the word hot seat, but this is strange. So a writer at the Pittsburgh Post Gazette was doing one of those like answer fan question deals. And apparently owner Art Rooney is frustrated and growing impatient. He should. With Mike Tomlin's lack of recent playoff success with the last playoff win coming in 2017. Now, let me ask you, why would you drop this in the middle of the season when they're four and three? How come you weren't saying this when they were leading the division in four and two and riding high?
Starting point is 00:28:55 Why now? What's going on here? I think the thing that hurts Tomlin is there, you know, he has a saying that I think is a great saying. Mike Tomlin always says two is a trend. Well, what's seven? Seven years when you can't get your own line right. So Mike Tomlin held to his own standards where he's, says two is a trend. We have four years now where they've been the most expensive defense and
Starting point is 00:29:18 have not been great in big spots. For seven years, they can't get the run game consistent. So Mike Tomlin's own words is by, if you do something twice, it is a trend. The trend is Pittsburgh cannot beat good teams. They don't win playoff games. They spend a fortune on their defense and it's not good. And the other trend that I see is where, you know, you watch That's Green Bay in Pittsburgh last week. Small market Green Bay has totally embraced what the NFL is. Creative offensive head coach. Drafting very high.
Starting point is 00:29:56 Receivers, tight ends, weapons. Buying a very expensive pass rusher. Steelers, what are you doing? They just went and got another safety a couple days ago with the trade deadline. It's not about your defense. I mean, I'll say this again. Aaron is doing Tomlin a solid. If they had Tribisky, if they had Kenny Pickett, what would this team be?
Starting point is 00:30:20 Aaron is keeping them interesting and viable. They're very good in the red zone now only because of Aaron Rogers. So Aaron sort of, he's makeup for a lot of the blemishes here. Aaron is, that's why I've been defending Aaron. PFF and others are like, well, he doesn't throw the ball down the field. You take Aaron out of this and you give them their previous four or five quarters. quarterbacks, it never forget what they looked like at the end of last year in the last five games. It was unwatchable on offense.
Starting point is 00:30:51 So I will just say one for 10 on third down against the Packers. They just could, big spots. Rogers could not come up. Now, he should have a lot of success against the Colts. Their back end is not great. This Colts defense is not outstanding. I mean, listen, I don't care what they do against the Titans. I do think their offense is going to move up and down the field against this overpriced defense. Is it tough one, Colin?
Starting point is 00:31:13 Is it making Blazine 5? It's being strongly considered. Yeah. At some point, the Steelers defense is going to show up, right? We would agree on that. They can't continue to get lambasted every weekend, right? And maybe this is the spot. Daniel Jones outside?
Starting point is 00:31:30 Does he eventually, does the milk carton expire on Daniel Jones? We're waiting for him to turn into the regular Daniel Jones. Final story, Colin, this is not great for one of your picks. Brock Purdy, he's missed four straight games and he's coming back from that toe injury. Here, we got audio of Kyle Shanahan. It doesn't sound like Purdy is a lock to play. Take a listen to Kyle Shanahan on his quarterback. That he feels confident he's ready to go based on how his toe feels.
Starting point is 00:31:57 I mean, he's going to look that way most likely from getting out there. He gets out there and he's hobbling around and stuff. He won't be out there. So he's got to go out there and go through the practices and stuff and really, let us know how good he feels because it's hard to know what's going on with the toe and they're really iffy things. I really like San Francisco this weekend.
Starting point is 00:32:18 They come off a clunker. Shanahan's been barking, and I also think Mack Jones is in the argument for the best backup in the league. I thought actually, last week that didn't play well at all, I thought he had a couple of unbelievable throws. I think Mack throws a, again, not a big mover, not a huge arm,
Starting point is 00:32:35 but sit in the pocket, give him a two, 2003 beat. He throws a pretty good ball. He does. Yeah, I'm slowly backing away like that Homer Simpson meme where he backs away into the shrubbery. I'm slowly backing off the Niners, Colin. I mean, I think they win this. But, you know, Jackson Dart is that scrambling quarterback. Those guys have given Salas defense a lot of problems.
Starting point is 00:33:00 And the Niners offensive line did not look great against the Texans. It kind of folded a little bit there. I mean, Mack Jones, I know you love him. He was not great. I mean, they had zero first downs with like two minutes left in the half, Colin. That's anemic. So be careful, my friend. J-Mack with the news.
Starting point is 00:33:20 Well, that's the news. And thanks for stopping by. The Hurd-Ly News. So I was thinking about this watching the Dodgers last night, is that there, and I've said this before, there are two sports that you have a lot of downtime and a lot of time to think. and for men who think they often overthink, and I guess women too, golf and baseball. And I've seen great golfers collapse.
Starting point is 00:33:43 I mean, go back to Rory McElroy, you know, double bogeys, you know, at Masters, right? He's struggling on Sunday at his 17th Masters. I think a little bit of this is the Dodgers are in their head. A lot of it's Toronto pitching. but I think they're suffering from Jay's pitching and intense pressure. LA is hitting 201 against Toronto. I mean, give me a break. Freddie Freeman, Betts, Max Muncie, Otani, one Dodger in scoring position all night.
Starting point is 00:34:15 So the Dodgers, they hear, they see, and they read everything written about them going into this series. And first, I think it motivated Toronto. I think really good teams are motivated. But the fact is, they don't even have George Springer, and they're beating the Dodgers up. And the other thing, the Blue Jays are 4-0 in the playoffs when they trail. So they're built for this. That 18-inning game, they're kind of built for it. Reportedly, their clubhouse had Joe Davis was talking about,
Starting point is 00:34:44 it's like spring training now. They're playing music, they're laughing, they're having fun, and the Dodgers are a little bit tight. That is the downside to hearing and seeing and reading how great you are. But, you know, the Dodgers went into this season. I mean, just think about this. They went into this season. Moki Betts wasn't available in September.
Starting point is 00:35:07 Bullpen was a bit of a mess. Starting pitchers had injuries. They were a flawed baseball team. But I've seen great golfers collapse in majors. I've seen great hitters in a World Series go belly up. I saw LeBron freeze. Literally freeze against Dallas in the NBA finals. LeBron James.
Starting point is 00:35:22 So, I mean, Rory McElroy is shooting one over Sunday at the Masters, two bogeys and a double. That's not because he forgot how to golf. I think that a little bit of this is the Dodgers came in as a favorite. And there is so much media now. There are so many platforms. You can't avoid it. I mean, I put my phone down for hours at a time and just watch sports.
Starting point is 00:35:46 I just want to watch sports. Generationally, I didn't grow up with a phone. That's probably easier to me than if you're 28 or 38. But you can't avoid stuff. I mean, I have people coming up to me all the time. Oh, I saw you on TikTok or Instagram. or doesn't have to be on TV or radio all the time. So the Dodgers are obviously sitting around waiting for the game seeing stuff,
Starting point is 00:36:06 and I think a bit of it's in their head. Never forget this. The Dodgers over under was 103 in Vegas. We looked up this morning, the Jays was 78.5. So one team is coming into this World Series. 78 and a half wins. Yankees picked to win the division, maybe Boston 2nd. Yeah, Toronto will scrap around.
Starting point is 00:36:27 You know, at the bottom, just fighting hopefully to get into the wild. So I think a lot of what the Dodgers are facing to hit this poorly, a guy that was in single A to start the season, I mean, looks like Verlander in his prime against you. I'm not saying the kid's not excellent. He's not Verlander in his prime. Some of this is it in the Dodgers head. Trey, you savage? Here's the starter after taking a three-two lead in the series. I treat every hitter the same. At this level, every hitter can do damage. So, I mean, it was just another strikeout. It's a crazy world, crazy world.
Starting point is 00:37:07 Hollywood couldn't have made it this good. So just being a part of this, I'm just very blessed. I mean, it is remarkable. He started the year in Singale baseball. It's just, I mean, that is several notches before, below the G League in the NBA. and he had just handcuffed the Dodgers, bad at bats, bad swings by star players. It goes and heads to Canada now.
Starting point is 00:37:36 Be sure to catch live editions of the herd weekdays in noon eastern, 9 a.m. Pacific. Hey, it's us to Jonas Brothers, and guess what? We have some big news. What's the news? Huge news. We created our own podcast called, Hey, Jonas. We invented a podcast? Well, we didn't invent it. We just contributed to it. First people to do podcasts. Pretty, yeah, pretty wide range of podcasts.
Starting point is 00:37:57 We're starting a trend. But this one's extra special. So how do we actually come up with a name, Hey Jonas, guys? I honestly don't remember. I think it was on a call about what we should call it. Well, we were thinking I'm originally calling it one of the early names of our band. Before Jonas Brothers was... This is how you guys remember it going down?
Starting point is 00:38:19 Yes. I have a very different memory of this. We were talking about a thing, a bit for the podcast. but we could call in and say, hey Jonas, and then I wrote down on my little notepad, Hey Jonas, and offered it up as a potential title for the podcast. But thanks for remembering that, guys. Listen to Hey Jonas on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcast. Just listen. We don't care where you hear it.
Starting point is 00:38:41 What's up, fam? It's Isaiah Thomas. And I'm C.J. Toledano, and our podcast Point Game is about defining the odds. Like LeBron heading into the playoffs without Luca and Austin Reed. And finding ways to win no matter what. He's the smartest player to ever play the game. His IQ is at a level that we've never seen before. And he knows without Luca and Austin Reeves, I got to manipulate the game.
Starting point is 00:39:03 We get a player's perspective on the challenges of the playoffs. I think Joker's going to be exhausted this series because when they don't have Rudy in the lineup, he has to really guard guys like Nas Reid. He has to guard Julius Randall. And then he has to give us everything he gives us on the night-to-night basis on offense. And when IT's friends stop by like Quentin Richardson,
Starting point is 00:39:22 we dive into some playoff history too. Steve Nash will get that thing. That man, hell get the flying. He running up the court, licking his fingers while he got the ball, like, after you go through a training camp with that, Isaad, you figure it out real quick. Get your ass up and down the court,
Starting point is 00:39:38 and you're going to get the ball.
Starting point is 00:40:01 You shouldn't have to share one with anybody. Mm-hmm. From navigating friendships and healing to setting boundaries and prioritizing your mental health. These are real, honest conversations. We don't always get to have out loud. Totally unreasonable with different parts of life, right? Like, oh, have all three meals and make sure you're mindful during all of them? Absolutely not.
Starting point is 00:40:22 During one meal, I'm standing. Sorry, our first ever human guest.
Starting point is 00:40:56 I don't think I could be in the same room with Shamrock the parrot. I'd be too nervous. That's right. The very funny Will Ferrell joins Rory Scovel and me, Josh Dean, for an episode dedicated to the many crimes committed by people also named Will Ferrell. They called to his fellow officer for the nippers. What are the nippers? Very good question.
Starting point is 00:41:18 No, I was thinking, would that be a good name for like a salad dressing? Simple assault. And it's a play on word, salt? Maybe not. I say we invest and we see. There's only one way to know. This did not amuse the cops. By the way, normally the cops are amused, but this did not abuse the cops.
Starting point is 00:41:35 Will even comes clean about some of his own crimes. I didn't get caught. You know why? If you don't want to be suspected of anything, you whistle as you walk. Listen to crime lists on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcast, or wherever you get your podcast. Start Saturday Strong with the undefeated. ranked Ohio State Buckeyes as they face off against rivals Penn State at the shoe. It all starts at 10 a.m. Eastern with a big noon kickoff live from Columbus.
Starting point is 00:42:09 Then it's Penn State, Ohio State. Big noon Saturday, only on Fox. So it's interesting as college football heats up. Sometimes the best answer about a new job is saying no. So there's a lot of talk about Lane Kiffin leaving Ole Miss, where he's a Messiah, right, and going to LSU or going to Penn State or going to Florida. So I'll just say this. I know Lane a little bit. Lane Kiffin bolted Tennessee. How did that work out?
Starting point is 00:42:42 Lane Kiffin was the youngest coach in the NFL at one point with the Raiders. He got fired. He got his perfect job at USC, fired again this time on the tarmac of an airport. How'd that work out? I think Lane Kiffin, in my opinion, is best suited for Ole Miss. Because I think he says what he thinks without much of a filter. Can't do that at the big jobs. You can absolutely do it.
Starting point is 00:43:08 You can absolutely do it at Ole Miss. Big fish, small pond, you can say whatever you want. The other thing is like Kurt Signetti is revered at Indiana. You put the same coach at Alabama, and all he would hear is, well, you're not Sabin. So here's the LSU job. Literally the governor yesterday is talking about the $54 million contract. They have to write for Brian Kelly. And he's basically said now the AD at LSU, we're taking you out of the next coaching signing.
Starting point is 00:43:41 Here it is. We are not going down a failed path. And I wanted to tell you something. This is a pattern. The guy that's here Now that wrote that contract cost Texas A&M, $70-something million.
Starting point is 00:43:58 Right now we got a $53 million liability. We are not doing that again. No, I can tell you right now, Scott Wood is not selecting an extra coach. Hell, I'll let Donald Trump selected before I let him do it. I don't know, but the Board of Superbillaz is going to come up with a committee
Starting point is 00:44:12 and they're going to go find us a coach. You want to enter that Hornets Nest? Hard pass. No, thank you. you. Penn State. I think Lane likes the southern weather. Played at Fresno State. Southern California guy. I think he likes the warm weather. I've said the Florida job maybe works because he likes Florida. But it's a lot of kiss in the ring when you go to the big jobs. And Lane is a great play caller. I do not think he's a politician. And you've got to be a little of both in these biggest
Starting point is 00:44:47 jobs. It's a lot of kiss in the ring. And I said yesterday, I talked about the kind of the food chain, the pyramid of the best jobs in the country, the top 10 jobs, for a lot of different reasons. And I think Texas, between the money, the boosters, the city is the best job. LSU and Florida, to me, we can put it up, are both great jobs. But they come with different pressure and different boosters. I think the best jobs to me, Texas, Ohio State, Georgia, LSU, Florida, Oregon, Phil Knight's given just shy of $3 billion to Oregon. As long as he's around, that's a great job. Alabama, SC, Michigan, Notre Dame, you can tell me about Texas A&M. I've been told for 40 years how great Texas A&M is going to be. Just, we'll see. I mean, Indiana last year, Indiana this year
Starting point is 00:45:40 could be better than Texas A&M, and that's a basketball school historically. So I think those big jobs, they're not for everybody, and they're not for somebody who's kind of loose, who's kind of raw, who's kind of outspoken, who can be kind of snarky. I think Ole Miss is great. And by the way, old miss is now going to pay him whatever he wants. So you tell me, in your current job, where you have rain, control, and or respected, is it better making 11, 12% less than the high,
Starting point is 00:46:10 pressure job. All I know is I heard that governor of Louisiana yesterday. I'm like, no, thank you. I am sea crest out on that job. And LSU may be the best job in the country. But the governor's now telling, I mean, it's now literally
Starting point is 00:46:28 a political football job. Literally, I wouldn't take it. Nope, wouldn't take it. All right, so Lamar Jackson is back in action tonight. against Miami. I'll tell you, Kansas City was three and three. It's all good.
Starting point is 00:46:47 Why? Mahomes. Buffalo, two-game losing streak. It's all good. Why? Josh Allen. That's the great thing about having a star quarterback. You always have a way to very quickly dig yourself out of a hole.
Starting point is 00:47:02 I was looking at Baltimore's schedule today. Think about this. The Raiders are two and five and the Ravens are two and five. And the wise guys in the death. desert, they like one of those two and five teams. And it's not the home team. It's the Ravens. Everybody loves the Ravens.
Starting point is 00:47:18 Look at their next seven games. Miami, Minnesota, Cleveland, Jets, Cincinnati, Pittsburgh, Cincinnati. That feels like a seven-game, eight-game winning streak to me. But it's must-win tonight. Here's Lamar Jackson. Coach, pretty much touched on that, talking about that with us in our team meeting. You know, each and every game going to be like a win-never game. to go home game, you know.
Starting point is 00:47:46 We started off, first season ever starting off like this slow, so we're going to have to just do a die right now each and every week. You know, it's, for years, I remember years ago, there was a story that Aaron Rogers playing or the backup playing in Green Bay,
Starting point is 00:48:03 and at the time it was like the highest number that Aaron was worth like, I think the number was 11 points. And I think to myself all the time, we undervalue quarterbacks. I mean, Anthony Richardson, the Colts stink last year. Just getting Daniel Jones,
Starting point is 00:48:21 they could be the second, third, fourth best team in the league. From bad to Super Bowl worthy. And that's just with Daniel Jones. So, I mean, it was kind of interesting watching Tyler Huntley last week pick apart the Bears. And I'm like,
Starting point is 00:48:38 this is Tyler Huntley, who's by all means a serviceable studious pro. He's excellent backup. But, I mean, it's just that's why it was so confounding to me that at the beginning of june when the Steelers and mike tomlin were sort of slow playing the quarterback position i'm like guys it's june unless there's something working with the back channels how do you not have a quarterback all lined up and i've said this before the offensive coaches in this league take quarterback it
Starting point is 00:49:10 feels like much more seriously but the ravens right now are two and five and if you go back and look at their next seven games. What is the only reason you like them to be favored in all seven games? It's not the O-line. It's not their secondary. It's not Derek Henry. Derek Henry is around with Tyler Huntley, right? Like, why do you like them for the next seven games?
Starting point is 00:49:32 And I always think about this, too, with quarterbacks, like Lamar Jackson. When you have a great quarterback, it allows you to call plays and make throws that a backup can't. I mean, Joe Burrow can make throws, Jake Brown and can't. Right. Lamar Jackson can give you a certain identity offensively, and you can take risks. You can't. Right? I'll never have a problem dropping Josh Allen,
Starting point is 00:50:02 Justin Herbert, Patrick Mahomes, like in the end zone, throwing from their own end zone. But you ever think about this when you're watching the game, and your team doesn't have a star quarterback? Don't you ever watch a football game? You're at your like three or four yard line, and your quarterback drops in the end zone, and you can feel your shoulders tighten up.
Starting point is 00:50:24 Like, oh, this isn't good. Andy Reid will drop Patrick Mahomes in that end zone 10 out of 10 times. And so Lamar Jackson back tonight, I think it looks different, I think it feels different, and I think the Ravens are going to go on a long winning streak. And I don't know what's happening with the numbers, but I can tell you this. Blowouts the last two weeks have been a common occurrence.
Starting point is 00:50:48 And if this got ugly, I don't think it's Miami trouncing the Ravens. All right, Greg CoSell is joining us around the corner. We are giving out, by the way, NFL quarterback Halloween candy next hour. We'll explain that too. Hour one down, hour two next. Hey, guys, it's us. The Jonas Brothers. I'm Joe.
