From 1979, that was a big moment for me.
84 is big to me.
I'm Sam J.
And I'm Alex English.
Each episode, we pick a year, unpack what went down, and try to make sense of how we survived it.
With our friends, fellow comedians, and favorite authors.
Like Mark Lamont Hill on the 80s.
84 was a wild.
I mean, it was a wild year.
I don't think there's a more important year for black people.

Ah, here we go.
It is a, what, Wednesday?
Live in Los Angeles.
It's the herd.
Wherever you may be and however you may be listening.
Thanks for Megan as part of your day.
J. Mack, you know, I picked Milwaukee to meet Phoenix in the finals.
I don't know.
I don't know about Phoenix.
I spotted something last night.
Very concerning.
Game two, making adjustments, huh?
A rational overreaction on a Wednesday morning?
Today is Wednesday, right?
I forget.
Yeah, it's getting crazy.
We have kids and wives and activities.
Midweek, I don't know what day it is.
Yeah, I'm a chauffeur every day of the week to my kids in the evenings.
So let's start with this.
The NBA has suspended Draymond Green for Game 3 Warriors already trail 02 in the series.
the suspension was based in part on Draymond Green's history of unsportsman-like acts.
Resumes matter.
I've said that multiple times on the show.
Draymond's resume here hurt him.
Listen, if you get a speeding ticket, right, you pay a fine.
If you get multiple speeding tickets, you lose your license.
It also didn't help Draymond with Adam Silver in attendance getting the crowd riled up.
the memories of malice in the palace run deep in this league there's the old saying can't yell fire in a crowded theater i do not think that helped draymond green at all inciting the crowd getting them riled up that's a non-starter for the NBA that malice in the palace thing they still worry about that and the damage it did to the league and i think with draymond it's the old saying our gifts become our curses
He has been at times a heel and a villain and a tough guy.
And that's the reason they have four titles.
Right.
Like it's a big part of who they are.
After Steph Curry, Draymond Green is the soul of this team.
Not Clay Thompson.
Not even Steve Kerr.
It's Steph Curry and Draymond Green.
Steve Kerr has told people privately how valuable Draymond Green is at practice on the flights,
creating energy, and you take the good with the bad.
And the good's been 90% and the bad's been about 10%.
There has been bad.
2016, they led the Cavs 3 to 1.
He gets ejected.
It's a turning point.
Warriors lose the finals.
Draymond and Kevin Durant.
I mean, there's multiple well-documented stories.
He may have inflamed that relationship.
Katie left.
There's the punch.
And then there's this.
And you see it in business.
you see it in sports, you see it in relationships, is that ego that helps you build an empire
can often unravel you.
And I've seen it my whole life.
That's why be grateful, be humble.
When you're at the top, the warriors have always accepted the good with the bad with Draymond,
and it has overwhelmingly been good.
They do not have four titles without him.
And even with KD, and though they could battle at times, somebody had to be the physical guy.
somebody had to be the presence. Somebody had to be the bouncer. But now this, now this dynasty is
teetering. They're all mid-30s. Clay had a recent injury a year and a half ago. Steph limps every
playoff game. Dramon Green is older and the young guys are not ready to take the baton yet.
Cominga, Moody, Jordan Poole, they got rid of Wiseman. So this season has been bookended
with a Draymond punch and a Draymond kick.
And I fear that it's the end of this dynasty.
I didn't think it was worth an ejection.
I would have given Sabonis and Draymond technicals.
But the NBA said, we went back and looked at his history.
And I think with Adam Silver in attendance, inciting and riling up the crowd,
I don't think that did any favors to Draymond Green.
And I've watched the Warriors play 50 times this year.
And I'm not sure they can beat some.
Sacramento without Draymond. The ball doesn't move as well. He's their best defender. He's an
absolute catalyst in timeout. I'm not sure they can beat the Kings without him. I know they can't
beat the Kings in Sacramento without him. They're going to need big games from Jordan Poole,
Jonathan Caminga, and Kvon Lutie. And I'm not sure they're going to get it. Well, you know,
they say I did pick the Sons in a weird West to get to the finals without Paul George.
Clippers aren't the same team. Warriors have not been good enough on the road. I don't trust Denver, Sacramento's Young.
But they say that styles make fights. Okay. And so sometimes you've got to see boxers fight for a couple of rounds to
understand how it's going to work. And when I watch the Clippers with all that depth against the sons without much of a bench,
my takeaway is Phoenix needs another guy. They feel like.
they're a guy short. If you gave them the Clippers Norman Powell or a Terrence man, just a reserve,
it would feel different. But they gave away three players, remember they gave away three players,
all of them important players to Brooklyn to get Kevin Durant. So they had to give up McAil Bridges.
You know that was going to hurt, right? Everybody, but you're not going to get Kevin Durant without
him. But even a guy like Cam Johnson, who they gave up, Cam Johnson was averaging 14 points a game.
And that's about what they feel like they need, a little margin of air.
Cam Johnson the other night against Philadelphia had a huge night.
Because every time I'm watching this series, every time Phoenix has a substitution, you're holding your breath.
Now, Cameron Payne is the backup point guard to Chris Paul, but he's injured.
And maybe when Cameron Payne comes back, that's the guy.
Maybe I'm overreacting.
Maybe that's the guy.
But I feel like there's no margin for error.
It's almost like if you have a connecting flight at an airport.
and you only have like 25 minutes,
if there's a 10-minute delay, you miss your flight.
If one of your kids has to go to the bathroom,
you don't get there on time and they close the door.
I mean, last night, Phoenix's starters, give me a break.
He shot 60% from the field.
That's not going to happen again.
Devin Booker shot 64%.
That's not going to happen again.
It's just there's no margin for error.
When I watch these two, because I think the Clippers need another star,
They have depth.
The sons don't need another star.
They need another guy, which the clippers have a couple of.
And again, maybe that's Cameron Payne, but I think they need another dude.
And that's why teams like Milwaukee all year, add a Jay Crowder, they add a piece here.
It's amazing how often just another dude matters.
But I watched it last night, and I'm like, Cameron Payne needs to play.
because they're not going to shoot.
The Phoenix starter shot 60% last night.
There's no margin for error.
That game was tied at half.
It was in Phoenix.
Like, they're going to go back to Los Angeles,
and they may be lucky to get out of there with a two-two split.
That's what it feels like to me.
They need another dude.
So there you go.
I know, I know the Draymond Green thing.
Kind of an eye roll to me,
but I have to be honest.
I say that.
this all the time on their show. Resumays matter. And the NBA came out with Draymond Green. And it's
their words not mine. They went and looked at previous actions. Again, you get a speeding ticket,
you get a fine. You get multiple. You lose your license. And I think they just stacked up his resume.
Adam Silver was there. He watches him rile up the crowd. And it's like, all right, we have to send a message.
And that is why for all young people in life, be careful, be aggressive.
Don't be reckless.
Resumays matter.
And the way the wording is in the NBA, it was a go-either-way situation, and they went
to his resume.
I mean, you read the NBA release.
It's like, could, should, let's go look at his resume.
If this is the first instance, or maybe just the second he had one seven years ago,
it sounds like they could have passed on it.
Because it should be noted after the kick, Sabon has played for another seven and a half minutes.
I mean, he finished the game.
We've got to be serious here.
So, J-Mack, what did you make?
I'm going to be honest with you.
I watch a lot of warrior games.
I'm not sure they can beat Sacramento without him.
I don't think they can.
I don't want to go over.
Not twice.
You remember that LeBron Heat team in the finals, their final year against the San Antonio Spurs.
And you could just sense, like, oof, this doesn't look good.
Spurs are young.
and the spurs crushed him and that was the end.
LeBron bounced after that.
I have to,
you have to wonder, Colin,
in the NFL, you always say,
if there's too much drama,
you know,
history of drama,
just move off of that player.
This Draymond Green might be the final,
might be the final straw for Draymond
because he has a player option.
He wants to get paid.
Right.
How do you pay a guy
who has a history of kicking Stephen Adams and the groin?
Well, you do because you got four title.
You got something out of it.
So he's going to miss just game three.
So,
I think he's much more between screens and rebounding.
I think on the offensive end, he's more valuable than everybody thinks.
He is the constant screen guy.
He's a great passer.
And the drama?
Are we dusting under the rug that he punched out a teammate earlier this season?
The technical foul?
The finals in 2016?
But again, I am willing to deal with difficult people occasionally if I get a reward for it.
Oh.
Right?
Like Aaron Rogers, Green Bay's put up with a lot.
When did they move off him?
A dude, you're not winning playoff games.
They put up with Aaron Rogers for years.
It's when Aaron started getting beat at home by an old Tom Brady,
Jimmy Garoppolo, and Jared Goff that Green Bay is like, okay, we put up with a lot of stuff.
We're not getting the reward for the drama.
And that's the issue here.
Draymond is given you absolutely 90% good, four titles.
Listen, Steve Kerr wasn't mad at.
Draymond and Jordan Poole the punch.
He was mad it got out.
Like if you go to a month before the punch,
Drayman and Poole, read some of Steph and Steve Kerr's quotes.
Go back and look him up.
Jordan Poole was wearing teammates out.
It's fair.
And they still paid him.
But it's, it's, so this thing is,
I am always willing to deal with a little drama.
Do I get the payoff?
So what if the payoff is they lose in the first round of the Kings?
Well, again,
This is the, it looks like the end of the dynasty.
I mean, go back to the end of New England's dynasty.
Brady throws a pick six.
They lose it home to Tennessee.
And you're like, ooh, that's a clunky ending.
They're all clunky endings.
Jordan with the wizards.
They don't, dynasties don't end.
Oh, it's Mahomes in 12 years.
He'll be hobbling around the field and they'll get blown out at home in a
playoff game.
And it will be over.
They never end pretty.
Most dynasties, broadcasting dynasties, law dynasties, media dynasties,
team dynasties, they're not pretty at the end.
And so is this a Thelma Louise moment where you drive them right off the cliff with the stomp?
And it's very, very possible.
But I will argue to the end, Warriors got four titles.
How'd your team do?
How many titles your team get?
And he is invaluable in that room.
I mean, I know somebody that knows Steve very closely.
And Steve's like, even at practice, when you're a great offensive team like Kansas City Chiefs,
or the Warriors.
Anytime you're a great offensive team in sports,
it's easy to get complacent because you can flip a switch and get points, right?
When teams win with defense and toughness,
you never take it for granted because points come hard,
but you can win.
The Warriors get complacent really fast.
The one guy that held him accountable took no practices off was O.
his Dremont.
So he was overwhelmingly worth it.
But I mean, this season starts with a punch, ends with a kick maybe.
There's no way.
I don't think they can beat the I don't know.
So what happens whenever they play at the Chase Center,
their new arena, the young guys tend to play great.
Their role players are just like,
Comingo will be big,
Jordan Poole, who's been awful in the series, will be good.
So they're going to need all these reserve guys,
moody, guys off the bench to be huge.
And they generally are at the Chase Center.
But if they lose, obviously the series is over.
If they win,
I just, here's what I wonder.
Did this create resentment in the room?
Because we already know chemistry was an issue with this team.
That's why they were so bad on the road.
Does this like double down on some chemistry issues, young and old guys?
I don't know the answer to that.
Keep Steph Curry, figure out the rest later.
Well, I mean, Draymond's going to want to get paid this offseason.
Clay has already made it clear he wants to get paid as well.
I don't see how there's, those guys are getting paid, Colin.
It just doesn't make sense.
No, I, listen, I've said this before.
I said this to you, and I really believe this, if the Warriors lose and they start looking
around, Yokic is young and M.B. and Yonis, there's a lot of bigs around the league.
And you start looking around, you think to yourself, listen, we just, we need some scoring
down low.
I keep saying, if Anthony Davis rolls through these playoffs, keep your eye on it because the
Lakers want, got to match salaries.
Clay Thompson, Michael Thompson's a broadcaster.
for the Lakers, he can shoot, catch and shoot. People say they're not going to break up this or
break up that. Businesses break stuff up all the time, if they believe in return, they can
keep it going. The heart and soul is Steph. Everything is arguably movable after that.
I think they really like Andrew Wiggins, though. I think they like Andrew Wiggins a lot because
he gives you some offense as well. A lot of drama, a lot of fun. Be sure to catch live editions

Imagine an Olympics where doping is not only legal but encouraged.
It's the enhanced games.
Some call it grotesque.
Others say it's unleashing human potential.
Either way, the podcast's Superhuman documented it all,
embedded in the games and with the athletes for a full year.
Within probably 10 days, I'd put on 10 pounds.
I was having trouble stopping the muscle growth.

Do you remember when Diana Ross double-tap Little Kim's boobs at the VMAs?
Or when Kanye said that George Bush didn't like black people.
I know what you're thinking.
What the hell does George Bush got to do a little Kim?
Well, you can find out on the Look Back at it podcast.
I'm Sam J.
And I'm Alex English.
Each episode, we pick a here, unpack what?
went down and tried to make sense of how we survived it.
Including a recent episode with Mark Lamont Hill, waxing all about crack in the 80s.
To be clear, 84 is big to me, not just because of crack.
I'm down to talk about crack on day, but just so you all know.
I mean, at this point, this is the second episode where we've discussed crack, so I'm starting to see that there's a through line.
We also have AIDS on the table right now, so.
Thank you for finishing that sentence.
Yes.
I don't think there's a more important year for black people.
Really? Yeah. For me, it's one of the most important years for black people in American history.
Listen to look back at it on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.
So this is the story this morning from the San Francisco 49ers, according to Ian Rappaport.
The Niners have received multiple inquiries looking into a potential trade for the former number three pick, Tray Lance.
The conversations have been about the Niners receiving and fielding calls.
They're not making them.
teams are aware that Brock Purdy is going to be the starter, and he should be.
So I say the first thing I would say is if I was San Francisco, I'd move him.
And number two is he's probably worth a third, fourth round pick.
I mean, somebody liked him in the draft beyond the 49ers.
But the Niners, and this is an admirable trait.
Guys don't like to admit when they're wrong.
Don't double down on wrong.
You moved up.
He's not the guy.
I was told last year in preseason by somebody in the organization,
they were so deeply concerned about his ability to consistently throw a football accurately
that they went and got a hold of a quarterback guru and we're going to put him on the payroll like practices.
He would have a horrible practice followed by a pretty good one, then a really bad practice,
followed by a decent one.
He was so inconsistent at practice.
They just wanted to move on.
And it was also, it's a little bit of a momentum thing.
So we came in super, super raw.
then he gets hurt, then they find the steal of the draft in Brock Purdy.
Bang, bang, bang, you wake up, and it's like it was just too much negative momentum.
He needed reps, then he gets hurt, falls behind on reps, then Purdy's the steel of the draft.
And let's be honest right now.
Brock Purdy is better than Trey Lance.
We all know this.
Tom Brady got drafted in the sixth round.
There's a lot of quarterbacks that have been drafted in the third, fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh,
round.
Tony Romo undrafted, Kurt Warner undrafted.
Brock Purdy's better, especially in these.
in this offense. He just throws a football more accurately.
And this team between Kittle, between CMC, Christian McCaffrey, between Debo, Jennings,
they have Brandon Ayuk. They have targets that get yards after the catch,
get them the ball accurately. If you go back to basic stats as a starter,
one guy completes 67 and a half percent, one guy 55 and a half percent,
one guy 14 TDs, two picks, one guy two TDs, three picks. These are not,
the same quarterbacks. One looks like a starter in the NFL. One is a borderline backup.
So it just, and again, this is what we kept saying, Mike Silver, a friend of mine and I both
had good sources within the organization last year. And we kept telling you, like they were
worried based on practice. You didn't know what you were getting for practice. So Brock Purdy
wasn't raw. Brock Purdy was a three, four year starter in college. Iowa State's program
crumbled, even despite having a good coach last year, crumbled when he was.
left.
And I think this is the move.
I mean, you can keep doubling down on it.
You know, my guess was if they kept him, you know,
Trey was going to get a shot because of Brock Purdy's surgery.
So he was going to get looks in preseason with an opportunity.
But somebody in the building has made the decision when they went and got Sam Darnold.
Sam Darnold is probably a better version of Trey Lance.
Big, athletic, but not super athletic, kind of a funky delivery, not terribly accurate.
They're kind of the same guy.
but one guy they know can start in this league.
They know they've seen him make plays in this league consistently.
So once they got Sam Darnold, that was probably the end of it.
I figured they'd give him a run in preseason, purty's out.
Donald wouldn't take a ton of snaps in preseason.
They'd give it to Trey Lance, but somebody in the building's probably like, let's cut bait, let's move on.
We made a mistake.
Let's not double down.
Here's JMAQ with the news.
Turn on the news.
This is the herd line news.
Sticking in the NFL, this is.
This Bryce Young situation at the top of the draft, it feels like a lock that he's going to Carolina, right?
So he's canceled the rest of his pre-draft visits, and everybody says, oh, he's going number one.
But GM of the Panthers, Scott Fitterer says the team hasn't made any decisions yet.
Here's what he had to say.
This is a big decision for the organization.
We don't want to lock on to something early on just to decide that's our guy.
We want to keep this process open all the way through.
We saw yesterday that Bryce canceled his last visit.
Has there been communication to him that he's the pick?
No, there is not.
And, you know, that was a decision he made on his own.
And I just refer you to, you know, his reps and to Bryce as to why.
So I talked to an NFL general manager yesterday, his shop, they're all ready to go.
Teams now know they're doing run-throughs now.
Teams know what they want now.
So they know what they're doing.
that this is the GM I talked to yesterday said we're all we're all ready to go
Houston's on the clock at two let's just let's start you know I want to ask you about
Carolina I was just looking at their picks their depth chart Colin this is their
skill position players at running back Miles Sanders who they got from Philly
Chuba Hubbard remember him he's okay he's okay here's their wide receiver room
what Bryce Young is coming into Adam Thielen who turns 33 Minnesota is like yeah he's
your number one receiver yeah number
Number two is DJ Shark.
Yeah.
Terrence Marshall Jr.
By the way, he's not terrible.
He's going to be good.
DJ Shark?
No, no.
The Terrence Marshall Jr.
LSU kid.
Yeah, big.
That's not a, I mean, that's not a great receding court.
Wait, I'm not done.
Shy Smith, Levisca Chinolt.
Very clever kid from Colorado.
Very clever.
I'm saying those are four guys.
Are we doing a bit here?
This is a bottom five wide receiver route in the league.
Three of those guys would start for New England.
That's not, I'm not saying it's great.
New England down at the bottom with Carolina.
Bryce Young is coming into this.
Now I'm going to ask you about Bryce Young.
So would you even start him week one?
Or is Andy Dalton the guy?
I've always said, I think my takeaway with the Justin Fields in Chicago was I didn't think he was quite ready to start.
One of the things I love about Bryce Young, he's ready to start day one.
High school, college, he functions so high.
The S2 scores, his accuracy and self-awareness.
Steve Sarkesian, who was the offensive coordinator at Alabama, when they recruited him,
said he was the only freshman he'd ever seen that he thought could go into Alabama start day one.
This kid is really, Bryce is strangely functional.
I think he's going to walk in and play.
I would not mess around with him.
And I don't think that receiving court is awful.
They need a one, but all those guys are solid two and threes.
All right.
They got five picks.
only two picks in the top 110.
And one of them, I'm sorry, three, Bryce Young, and then two more picks in the top
110.
Yeah.
Well, they're probably going to go offense because their front seven's pretty good, and they
have some young corners who are banged up.
I think...
Are they in the playoffs this year?
You sound really excited for Carolina.
No, I think Bryce Young is actually going to be a really nice player.
I don't know how long he's going to last with that body, but I think he's going to walk in
immediately and be pretty interesting in that lousy division.
They'll be better than Tampa.
They'll be better than Atlanta.
And by the way, do we know if, do we know New Orleans coach?
Go look at New Orleans coach, his head coaching record, Raiders and Saints.
He's very likely not a head coach in the NFL.
You think Carolina will maybe be the second best team in the division?
I think Carolina is going to compete for the division title with Frank Reich and a bunch of number two receivers and Bryce Young.
I do.
I might need to take some more time on that.
I thought they were a seller-dweller.
What's the over-under on them?
We don't know yet.
It's too early.
I'll tell you, if it's six, bet the over.
Oh, come on.
Winning seven games next year?
In that division?
Wow.
You can win five in that division.
You're right.
PJ Walker did a decent job last year with this team.
No, I mean, look around.
Wow.
Okay.
Next up, I guess we got to talk about the Patriots.
Bill O'Brien, he finally spoke yesterday.
For the first time since he was hired as the O.C. for the Patriots back in January,
O'Brien held a consistent theme when talking about Mac Jones.
making it clear the quarterback will have a clean slate this season. Here's Bill O'Brien.
Fresh start, and it's really not anything about what's gone on in the past. It's more about
moving forward. That's our theme. That's one of our themes on offense is to move forward.
And it really is a clean slate. You know, however you played or however you coached or
whatever you did in the past, you know, in the end, it's all about what are we going to do starting
yesterday? Football is a game of emotion at times. That's just, that's just, that's a,
That's what football is.
But at the end of the day, this is a new year.
This is a new start, and we're excited about it.
I think he's going to have a bounce back.
Last place in the ASEs.
Oh, come on.
Who's finishing behind them?
Yeah, that's what I thought.
Jets fan talking trash.
Be very careful.
I mean, I have Aaron Rogers in my back pocket here.
I'll just, I'll be very, very careful.
Mack Jones, rookie year when he had a functional OC,
put up better numbers than any Jets quarterback in the last.
15 years.
I think New England's going to be...
Can we get Marks Hedges on set today?
No.
You went to two AMC title games.
Come on.
Geez.
Final story.
Let's go back to the NBA.
LeBron has it totally looked 100% since returning to the lineup from injury.
That wasn't a cheap shot at Mark Sanchez.
You're right.
How about past 10 years?
That's more fair.
Thank you.
Anyways, back to LeBron.
Dave McBenamon was asked about the health of LeBron
heading into game two.
Here's what he had to say.
I think he's in a really good spot.
When he came back, there was a timeout in the second quarter
where he took both sneakers off and just looked.
Kind of like to be going through it.
Like, uh-oh, that's the only time I saw any sign of.
There's been some fatigue moments where he's getting his win back,
but that's not something that concerns me
because he'll continue to get that back.
But that was the only time that I saw.
Okay, maybe the foot's still there for.
So there's a big, big game tonight.
This is, you don't want to overstate it, but a win in Memphis.
We're waiting on word if John Moran is going to play or not.
Memphis will fold.
Well, if the Lakers win this, Memphis will fold.
Now, if Memphis is able to get the dub and then John Morant comes back.
Now, you and I both believe that Memphis will play total desperation basketball like Cleveland did last night
and probably play really good basketball.
Don't go out there thinking you can easily bet the Lakers to win this.
What's the line on this thing tonight?
I think Memphis tonight's going to play.
the season's on the line.
You saw how Cleveland played last night.
They had so much more energy early than the next.
I'm just saying, though, the problem, Cleveland has all their guys.
Memphis is going to, Tyos Jones is probably their sixth man,
given the weakness of the bench.
He's now got to start.
Who are you bringing off the bench to save you?
Salty Aldama?
I just put your game.
You're not getting 28 from Rui again.
Believe me.
Fine.
We get 18 from Rui.
How many is the Hillbilly Kobe putting up?
Austin Reeves?
How about 16?
That's closer to his average.
1610, 1610 assists?
You got these guys doubling up on these performances.
Did you see the LeBron point total?
How many people are betting LeBron over points?
Probably because we just talked about it yesterday.
LeBron's not going to go out, go down meekly.
He wants to win this game so badly.
I would look at points, rebounds, and assist
because he doesn't necessarily have to score, right?
He could be a facilitator if Austin Reeves isn't on.
But a lot of things went the Lakers way.
Rui had his best game maybe as a pro.
I mean, listen, he's making open shots.
Memphis challenged him.
Don't challenge Rui Hachimura.
He will answer the call.
And you know Austin Reeves wants all the smoke.
Ah gosh, his team is really...
Admit it, you like this Lakers team.
No, no, no.
Since the trade deadline, they pass, they set screens, they defend,
they have some limitations, but I like how hard they play.
Even if you want to make LeBron jokes and call Anthony Davis glass, you know,
because he's so weak.
Rui Hachimura is exciting.
Dennis Schroeder's fun off the bench, and Austin Reeves is everybody's favorite.
No, no, no.
No, it's funny in Los Angeles.
This is a big, big city.
And the media isn't a bunch of fanboys like most of the country.
The media here is like, you know, San Francisco, New York, Philadelphia, where they'll bash local teams.
The Lakers get bashed by the local media a lot.
Yeah, no, I mean, so it's, I'm not on an island, I don't think, probably, that I was listening to a radio show locally.
And they were complaining about Westbrook and fans and the Lakers.
and my takeaway is we have to be positive and fair.
Rob Polink at the trade deadline engineered a deal that they've actually, I don't think it's a championship team, but they're fun to watch.
They spread the ball.
They're committed to defense.
They play hard.
They play hurt.
It's some of this stuff is, if you're all in, I'm all in.
This team, this Lager team, I've never seen Anthony Davis in his career play like this.
They are all in.
I'm all in.
Are you all in?
Yeah, I think they're fun.
I think there are, we both picked him to win this series.
Yeah, we did.
Lake Show, baby. It's fun.
J-Mack with the news.
Well, that's the news.
And thanks for stopping by.
The Heard Line News.
I'm interested, J-Mack.
So on the Draymond Green suspension for one game, game three, what's the line now?
That's interesting to me.
Because I don't know if they can beat.
Chase Center's weird.
The young warriors tend to play over their head at home.
and shrink on the road.
Jordan Poole was awful so far in the series.
My guess is Jordan Poole rebounds and has a very good game three.
They're going to need him.
And Cominga plays a lot of minutes.
So do we have-
Why don't you guess the line?
I've got it in front.
Now, has it moved with Draymond News.
It has to have moved.
Probably budged, yes.
Okay, so I think it probably opened five,
and I think it's now down to two, Warriors minus two.
Two?
Huh.
What is it?
I'm seeing Warriors minus five and a half.
Oh, no, I'd take Sack.
You really think without Dremont?
I need to give it some.
I don't know what they're doing.
What was it before Dremont?
Unfortunately, this app that I'm using doesn't have that.
I will look into that for you, though.
Five and a half.
That's a lot of points.
Heart of a champion?
Steph Curry?
Lose your best defender?
Okay.
He wasn't stopping some bonus, really, in the series.
Have you watched his screens and his passing?
He's an elite defender, an elite screen setter.
Elite turnover, er, if that's a thing.
I mean, you get a lot of turnovers, a lot of sloppiness.
By the way, we should have a contest.
Who do the Warriors start in place of Draymond Green?
They have a lot of options.
They go small, big, young.
Dante DiVincenzo, Luni, Dante, Wiggins, Steph Clay.
Poole first off the bench, Cuminga, second off the bench.
So you're giving up a lot of size if you start Dante.
Yeah, you can start Cominga, but they haven't done that.
Dante started, I would probably bring Caminga.
the bench six minutes in, and I would also then probably bring Peyton and Poole off the bench.
They go about eight, nine deep. They go eight deep without drag.
I don't want to run too long here, but have you noticed how bad the Warriors' offense
has struggled outside of Steph creating their own shots?
Yes.
There is a world where Steve Kerr says, Jordan Poole, we need to get you started.
You're at home.
Start in this game.
We need offense out of the gate.
We cannot fall behind early.
We don't want to be playing catch-up.
Do you go offense and try to match Sacramento?
You got now Poole, Wiggins, and Curry on the court at the same time.
That's pretty damn dynamic.
Yeah, their bench is three deep now.
Pool, Peyton, and Cominga.
That's a real bench.
If you start, Dante, that's a real bench.
Eight at home.
Kaminga and Poole watch them play great basketball.
That's what they need.
I don't know.
I watch the Warriors more than any team outside of the Lakers.
It's not the same team without Dre.
It's not.
It's not the same passing without him.

Covino and Rich, give me a hell, yeah.
Imagine an Olympics where doping is not only legal, but encouraged.
It's the enhanced games.
Some call it grotesque.
Others say it's unleashing human potential.
Either way, the podcast's Superhuman documented it all.
embedded in the games and with the athletes for a full year.
Within probably 10 days, I'd put on 10 pounds.
I was having trouble stopping the muscle growth.

A win is a win.
A win is a win.
I don't care what I'm saying.
Yep, that's me, Clever Taylor the 4th.

Or when Kanye said that George Bush didn't like black people. I know what you're thinking.
What the hell does George Bush got to do a little kill?
Well, you can find out on the Look Back at it podcast.
I'm Sam J.
And I'm Alex English.
Each episode, we pick it here, unpack what went down, and try to make sense of how we survived it.
Including a recent episode with Mark Lamont Hill waxing all about crack in the 80s.
To be clear, 84 is big to me, not just because of crack.
I'm down to talk about crack on day, but just so you all know.
I mean, at this point, Mark, this is the second episode where we've discussed crack.
so I'm starting to see that there's a through line.
We also have eight on the table right now.
Thank you finishing that sentence.
I don't think there's a more important year for black people.
Really?
Yeah.
For me, it's one of the most important years for black people in American history.
Listen to look back at it on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts,

The 2023 USFL season continues Saturday as the Memphis showboats take on the Birmingham
Stalions at 7 p.m. Eastern on Fox.
Then on Sunday, it's
the Michigan Panthers versus the Philadelphia
Stars, also at 7 Eastern on FS1.
So according
to a 54
player poll in the
NBA, this is players,
54 players being pulled
by the athletic.
Sam Amick, top of next hour, we'll stop
by. All sorts of questions being asked.
This one jumped out to me,
that Atlanta's Trey Young,
Jamek loves him, has been voted
on by the players as the most overrated player in the league.
Now, I think he's a very talented guy.
I really do.
But flashy point guards.
I've been saying this at ESPN and Fox.
I set it with John Wall,
Trey Young, Westbrook, Derek Rose, John Morant.
And I get crap every time.
But now even the players admit it's true.
Is that flashy point guards are like sports cars.
They look great in the parking lot.
They're not built for bad weather and a long journey.
They don't do anything in the playoffs.
They get to the rim.
You can easily attack them physically, throw bodies at them, pound on them.
They weigh 175 pounds.
And if you look at Trey Young's last 10 playoff games, the Atlanta Hawks are 1 and 9,
and his numbers are bad.
It's much easier to attack a smaller player in the playoffs.
That's why wings and bigs.
The NBA is going to let you get much more physical in the playoffs.
postseason. They're going to allow it. You can get much more physical. Well, 175, 182-pound guy going
up against AD in the paint who weighs 260 or whatever he weighs. So I have been on this for years
saying these guys are all sports cars. Sports cars are great. Convertible sports car,
4th of July to Labor Day, the best. But they're not built for a long journey. And so here we go.
And the fanboys, nothing a fan boy falls for, an NBA fanboy.
falls for every time than a flashy point guard.
They fell for Wall and Westbrook and John Morant.
It's like, guys, all we care about in the NBA, I see the TV ratings or the playoffs.
Nobody watches it during the regular season.
That's always been privately.
That was the secret of the late David Stern.
He used to always joke.
Nobody watches our leave with Michael Jordan.
Nobody's watching in the regular season.
They're watching in the playoffs.
That's when legacies are formed.
And everybody goes, well, what about Steph Curry?
Steph Curry is the exception.
You want to fail in business?
Take the exception and try to use it as a rule.
Steph Curry's dad played in the league,
one of the most well-adjusted, smartest players ever,
the greatest shooter ever, selfless, gets along with everybody.
Go ahead and take the exception.
The rule is, flashy point guards don't deliver in April, May, and June.
So at least the players now are admitting it.
So when all you fanboys go to the internet to defend your guy, the players are telling you.
He's overrated.
Not just overrated, the most overrated.
And I like him.
I like Tray Young, kind of.
So Charles Barkley, some wisdom shared.
Charles has been around the block.
He was on a local radio station talking about Lamar Jackson holding out, despite being offered three years by the Ravens, not guaranteed.
Or at least he was offered a big contract, very similar to Jalen Hertz.
though like Jalen Hertz contract, not guaranteed.
And here's Barkley talking about Lamar.
Lamar, you're playing with Firebrother.
You're going to get burnt.
These dudes, they're all billionaires.
They're not going to let you screw up their business model.
You've got to take the best deal.
And it's not even about Lamar.
I know what they're saying behind the scenes.
They're like, you know what?
If you get this guy guaranteed money,
I'm going to get Herbert guaranteed money.
I'm going to give borough guaranteed money.
sure.
We can't give all these guys guaranteed money.
So, boy, this is a good rule.
Who you surround yourself with in any profession matters.
And Lamar Jackson's getting really bad advice from people around him.
I've seen it my entire life.
Bad agents, bad advisors, bad advice, bad friends.
Nothing erodes a career faster than bad advice.
You see it in Hollywood all the time.
like it's an epidemic in Hollywood.
You see a young star, they do a couple of bad movies, and they disappear.
They didn't get less talented, less beautiful.
They got bad advice.
And nobody, no studio wants to roll the dice a third time on somebody that's whiffed on two movies.
And you see this all the time.
Lamar Jackson, in his last 12 starts in December and January, has finished one game.
Nobody's given this guy a guaranteed deal.
nobody is giving you a fully guaranteed deal.
Like somebody in his social circle has got to shake him and say, dude, you're not getting one.
Jalen Hurts didn't get one and he's been hurt less and got to a Super Bowl.
So now, now it's not like, you know, well, the Ravens are winning.
No, they're not winning because they're not going to win a bunch of games, as J. Mack has pointed out.
Nobody's winning here, right?
Like Baltimore needs in a division where you play Joe Burrow twice,
Kenny Pickett looks legit, Deshawn Watson's coming back.
Baltimore is not winning, but Baltimore has shown an ability over the last 20 years to draft a lot of different quarterbacks, all shapes, all sizes, all styles, and get the Super Bowls.
They won one with Flacko.
They won one with Dilfer.
They've used pocket guys.
They've used mobile guys.
Baltimore has multiple times changed styles, changed quarterbacks.
If it wasn't for a fluke defensive touchdown, they were going to beat Cincinnati at the end of the year with a third string
quarterback. So Baltimore's done this over and over. They won't be held captive by a prisoner
by a quarterback. They're just, or a player. They'll just move off guys. So, and again,
the market, you can, you can go on Twitter and everybody can gash up and tell you how great you are.
The market will dictate how great you are. Lamar crickets, no offers. Now, if he wasn't
demanding a guaranteed contract, do I believe Lamar Jackson would have lots of offers?
Absolutely. He would have a lot more offers if you just said, okay, I'll give you a four-year deal, one-year guaranteed.
Well, franchise tax guaranteed income. A lot of people would do that deal, but you go to two years and three years, and you're not getting a guaranteed deal. Period. You're not. And Baltimore would be crazy to give it to you.
So that's where we stand today. I don't think Baltimore's winning here. But if you look at their history, they've done this multiple times.
they have just figured out they've had Elvis Gerbaugh, Flacco, Trent Dilfer,
Lamar Jackson was a totally different style.
Win, win, win, win, win.
That's what they do.
It's what they do.
Should be noted.
Tough to keep that up.
You can strike some gold with Trent Dilfer and one of the greatest defenses ever.
Good luck trying to duplicate that, buddy.
All right.
Have fun, Baltimore.
That player poll is pretty interesting, though.
I was just crunching the numbers.
I'm so glad you brought that up on Trey Young.
So 450 players in the NBA.
54 players is the poll.
So like 11% of the league thinks Trey Young is the most overrated player in the NBA?
11%.
Okay.
Do you realize how our ratings work?
Yeah, I do.
Okay.
The way TV ratings work is you take 1% of the audience to get ratings.
If you do a Twitter poll, people would be flummoxed by this.
If you take a Twitter poll, can you do those anymore?
I'm not sure.
I have no idea.
I'm losing my blue check mark in a week here.
If you do a Twitter poll, the first minute of it, the first reactions, is generally how it will stay.
If it's 70, 31 side, it will stay that off eight reactions.
Is this idea that you need 70% 10 to 12% of the NBA is speaking for the NBA.
It's the way it's always worked in polling.
When you do these polls for presidential, a lot of these elections, you're taking less than half of, you're taking one eighth of one,
percent and you get a lot of accuracy.
10 percent of the NBA is a big voice.
It's a large percentage.
Are they polling older players?
Are they pulling younger players?
Are they pulling point guards?
I mean, I mean, 54 players is not a large enough sample size for it to mean much to me.
You think he's the most overrated player in the league?
That's what the players are saying.
That's what 11% of the NBA thinks.
Come on.
Well, we'll ask the guy who did the poll next.
Okay.
Hour two.
