Starting point is 00:00:00 This is an I-Heart podcast. Guaranteed Human. Another podcast from some SNL, late-night comedy guy, not quite. Unhumor me with Robert Smygel and friends. Me and hilarious guests from Bob Odenkirk to David Letterman help make you funnier. This week, my guest, SNL's Mikey Day and head writer, Streeter Seidel, help an a cappella band with their between songs banter.
Starting point is 00:00:23 Where does your group perform? We do some retirement homes. Those people are starving for banter. Listen to humor me with Robert Smigel and friends on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Imagine an Olympics where doping is not only legal, but encouraged. It's the enhanced games. Some call it grotesque. Others say it's unleashing human potential. Either way, the podcast's superhuman documented it all, embedded in the games and with the athletes for a full year.
Starting point is 00:00:52 Within probably 10 days, I'd put on 10 pounds. I was having trouble stopping the muscle growth. Listen to Superhuman on the IHard Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Hey, what's good, y'all? You're listening to Learn the Hard Way with your favorite therapist and host Kear Games. This space is about black men's experiences, having honest conversations that it's really not safe to have anywhere, but you're having them with a licensed professional who knows what he's doing. How many men carry a suit or armor? It signals to the world that you're not to be played with. And just because you have the capability that does not mean that you need to.
Starting point is 00:01:29 Listen and learn the hard way on the IHard radio app, Apple Podcast, or wherever you get your podcast. Thanks for listening to The HARD podcast. Be sure to catch us live every weekday on Fox Sports Radio in noon to 3 Eastern, 9 a.m. to noon Pacific. Find your local station for the herd at Fox SportsRadio.com or stream us live every day on the IHart Radio app by searching Fox Sports Radio or FSR. listening to Fox Sports Radio. Here we go on a Wednesday day after the trade deadline. All sorts of teams getting better.
Starting point is 00:02:08 We think live in Los Angeles, it's the herd, wherever you may be, and however you may be listening. Thanks for making us part of your day. One hour from now. First college football poll comes out. Joel Klat stops by. What's the latest with Jim Harbaugh? Will he go to the NFL? There's a job opening in the desert.
Starting point is 00:02:28 May Mack in the middle of the night. No moving bands. Maybe a U-Haul. Raiders have a new GM interim, coach interim. How about that? What a spectacular disaster for the Vegas Raiders, huh? I mean, this franchise can't do anything right, Colin. And my Jets are coming there next weekend. I will be in the house. I can't wait for the Jets to crush the Raiders. I'll be careful. So the Raiders made a coaching move last night, fired their coach and their GM. So pay. Patriots South, the Houston Texans, that didn't work. Patriots Detroit, Matt Patricia, that didn't work. Patriots Miami, Brian Flores, that didn't work.
Starting point is 00:03:11 In fact, they went the opposite way when he left. And Patriots West in the desert, the Raiders, didn't work. Anybody think Tom Brady was the reason it worked? Tom Brady was the rare superstar. He didn't get enough credit. New England, Belichick now a shell of themselves. What do they do well? Do they draft well?
Starting point is 00:03:32 No. Develop well? No. Free agent well? No. Offense. Out of touch, tone deaf. Below average, all four categories. In fact, the best former patriot who's a coach is Mike Vrable, and he wasn't an assistant
Starting point is 00:03:46 or a coordinator. He was a player. Raiders, just hire smart people. And it's a great rule in life in business. Just hire smart people. Sean McVeigh's young, an offensive whiz. He works. Pete Carroll's older, a defensive whiz.
Starting point is 00:04:03 That works. Mike McDaniel in Miami, a tiny man, an intellect. That works. Dan Campbell, Detroit, a mountain of a man, heavy on emotion. That works. Who cares where they came from? It works. Let's put the Patriot Way to bed.
Starting point is 00:04:20 It was the Tom Brady Way. Cincinnati wins now. Why? Joe Burrow. Kansas City dominates the AFC. Why? I love Andy Reid, but it's Patrick Mahomes. It was the Brady way. Proximity to greatness, and I've said this before, does not equal greatness. Many of Belichick's assistants and coordinators have been the league's biggest busts, Joe Judge, Matt Patricia. And none of Brady's backups or coordinators are running the league. Proximity is mostly nonsense. I mean, Phil Jackson, Where's his great coaching tree?
Starting point is 00:04:57 Bill Belichick, look at his coaching tree. Basically, they both had an all-time great player, Brady, MJ. Both were smart, leaning toward academic, both very quirky, stubborn in their own way. You can't duplicate that. I don't trust the Raiders owner to hire the right guy. But can we get out of proximity to greatness? Kansas City's winning. You're not going to find another Andy Reid.
Starting point is 00:05:28 He's in his 60s. He's been doing this for 40 years. You're not going to find another Mahomes. And why you'd ever choose a GM out of New England, Dave Ziegler's last two drafts, no stars. Number one pick this past year appears to be a bust. I mean, you can copy their defense. You want to copy New England's drafting, their personnel?
Starting point is 00:05:52 Where are the hits? They drafted three guards. two kickers last year. But it's the classic, well, they do it well. Let's get their underlings. Doesn't work. Where's Phil Jackson's coaching tree? You don't get Phil Jackson.
Starting point is 00:06:08 Where's Belichick's coaching tree? You don't get Belichick. Belichick had lots of smart players and lots of smart coaches. They can't take his brain and you can't take Phil's Zen. So I don't know what the Raiders are going to do. I know what I would do, Jim Harbaugh, get into that. about five minutes, ten minutes. But this idea that the Patriot Way was some sort of mysterious,
Starting point is 00:06:32 covert secret formula. That was Brady. It's Tom Brady. He left shadow of itself. All right. So yesterday, big trade deadline day. Very fun. Every current NFC playoff team made a move.
Starting point is 00:06:51 Detroit making moves. San Francisco making moves. Philadelphia making moves, except Dallas. Dallas did not make a move. So Tony Pollard, I wish you the very best luck, Mr. number two running back, finding a hole in the Niners D line now that they've added Chase Young to Eric Armstead, to Bosa, to Javan Hargrave. Good luck, finding a little crevice in that.
Starting point is 00:07:15 So the Cowboys didn't make a move, but I saw the headline today. I'm reading it right now. Here's the headline in Dallas. Cowboys offensive coordinator gives over-the-top praise for Dak Prescott and compares him to Drew Breeze. Seriously. You just beat the rebuilding Rams at home, and you want to compare Dak to a guy that 16 different times led the NFL in a single season category
Starting point is 00:07:42 and will end up in the Hall of Fame. Dallas loves its players, way more than anybody else. the only player Dallas has on this roster that if he was available to the market, there would be a mad dash to get him is Michael Parsons. People would like C.D. Lamb, but if you had Jamar Chase, you wouldn't need him. If you had Devante Adams, you wouldn't need him. So Philadelphia goes out in the last week and grabs a Pro Bowl safety, even though they didn't have a lot of holes in that team.
Starting point is 00:08:13 San Francisco, not like they don't have a good D-line, added another edge rush. or Chase Young. Seattle's pass rush. Top four in the league. They're like, nope, we're going to go get Leonard Williams from the Giants and fortify, strength on strength. Detroit. Hey, we've got good weapons here.
Starting point is 00:08:32 Our offense is great. We're going to add another wide receiver. Dallas? Nah, we're not interested. So, I mean, Philadelphia and San Francisco have a roster with very, very few holes, if any. But they doubled down on strength. secondary, very talented for Philadelphia. We're going to get a safety.
Starting point is 00:08:52 D-line for San Francisco. Three real players. Let's get another. Dallas could use a power running back. Didn't make a move. Could use another corner. Didn't make a move. And outside of C.D. Lamb, who do you trust in the perimeter? Didn't make a move.
Starting point is 00:09:08 And do you know why? Because Dallas and Jerry Jones have always overvalued their draft picks. Think about it. You know what the Cowboys are? the diner that has that sign out in front? World's best coffee. Nobody believes that, except for the guy that owns the diner. Your diner doesn't have the world's best hamburger,
Starting point is 00:09:32 or best cup of coffee or best omelet. It doesn't. If you want to believe it, that's adorable. But the Cowboys are a billion-dollar business. They shouldn't be in the adorable business. All the Cowboys' current best players, they drafted them. That's not the way it works in Sanford. Francisco. They went out and said, we acknowledge we don't have a back as good as Christian McCaffrey
Starting point is 00:09:53 or a left tackle as good as Trent Williams. Hargrave, Chase Young, we've missed on some DeLineman. Let's go get other people's hits. Look at Philadelphia. A.J. Brown. They didn't draft him. They said, we like that kid in Tennessee. Wish we would have drafted him. We didn't. Let's go get him. Both their corners. Somebody else's. Their new safety. Tennessee as well. So San Francisco and Philadelphia acknowledge we don't have all the answers. There's many great players around this league that we didn't draft. Dallas, we got our guys.
Starting point is 00:10:31 Dak is the next Drew Brees. Dallas has holes. We watch them play San Francisco. You'll watch this weekend against Philadelphia. They're great at dominating the rebuilding Rams. Maybe the cruddy jet sometimes. Arizona, you'll see the truth this weekend. Dallas overvalues their own because what it does, it validates your expertise.
Starting point is 00:10:56 We don't need outsiders here. We know what we're doing. Our draft picks are the very best. And you would hope every team loves their draft picks. But it's called delusion and being deluded when you think you have all the answers. And this is why Dallas is a step behind San Francisco and Philadelphia. By the way, Detroit saying, you know what, we have this young receiver we got from Alabama. He's not ready yet.
Starting point is 00:11:24 He can't necessarily catch. So we're going to go to Cleveland and get their receiver. You can knock the Chicago Bears, but they got a great defensive lineman. They gave up a pick. Who cares? You have to acknowledge you don't have all the answers. It's okay. Dallas really struggles with that.
Starting point is 00:11:44 All the NFC contenders. Forget the AFC teams that are better than the NFC teams. teams. All the NFC contenders, who I would argue, I would take Detroit over Dallas, Philly over Dallas, and the Niners over Dallas. They all acknowledged, we need a little more help. Dallas, we're good here. And we got the world's best coffee. I don't buy it. J. Mack, Joel Clat, one hour from now. For the record, here's Jerry Jones last week. Again, he loves the talk. Talking about, oh, I'd make a deal.
Starting point is 00:12:20 You know, I just can't tell you, I'm by nature active and I'm by nature a risk taker. So don't come by unless you won't struck it. So we will, we will trade. There's no mistake about it or we will make a deal. But it's certainly got a high bar because I like our team. Yeah, I like him too. I don't love them. I love Philadelphia.
Starting point is 00:12:49 I love Cincinnati. I love Baltimore. I like Dallas. But teams yesterday that I loved added pieces. Dallas didn't. Hey, if I could go back to the Raiders real quick, I thought about this long and hard, Colin. Is the Raiders job a good coaching job right now?
Starting point is 00:13:09 Well, right now's the point, right? An NFL coaching job, and I've said this about the Raiders. Devante Adams, Max Crosby, Hunter Renfro, good left tackle. There are really key positions in the league, and they're good at many of them. Devonte Adams top three receiver, Max Crosby, top three pass rusher. Everybody in this league is looking for a great weapon and a great pass rusher. They've got a left tackle.
Starting point is 00:13:36 They've got a running back who right now has been disappointing, but there are slot receivers now are much more valuable than 10 years ago. There are pieces here, but foundationally, starting at the top. I don't trust decisions and judgment. I mean, their last two drafts with the New England guy, and I got nothing against him, but there's no hits. None. In fact, you could argue last year's
Starting point is 00:13:55 number one picks a bust. The big problem for the Raiders is look at the other potential job openings. Washington's going to be open. That's a better job. A lot more foundational pieces. New owner. Five picks in the first three rounds. Bears job's probably going to be open. That's a great job. Top two picks.
Starting point is 00:14:12 Chargers job could be open. Justin Herbert. Raiders are going to have a, I think they're going a tough time filling this position, Colin. Yeah, I mean, generally, if you, there's usually one or two really good candidates every year in coaching, like one or two really good ones. Kyle Shanahan, but he was coming out. Matt LeFleure was well thought of. There's about one or two great candidates, and there's seven to eight job openings.
Starting point is 00:14:37 So five teams, like Arthur Smith in Atlanta, people thought very highly of him. Whether he's great, he's not a whiff, that's not the issue. So, you know, a great coaching, you know, Sean McVeigh came from nowhere, but once he was hired, it was acknowledged in the building. He was like a Spengali. He was a brilliant young guy. So that, you know, Dan Quinn, if he decided to coach again, would be a very good candidate. Great, I don't know, good. I mean, he was okay in Atlanta for years.
Starting point is 00:15:03 So there's just not many great candidates. And my guess is if you look at the wackiness of the Raiders, they, you know, Dimmico Ryan's was a very good candidate out of the Niners. People thought he was a rising star. Houston, to their credit, nabbed him. But there's not multiple great candidates per year. Now, sometimes Nick Seriani, we get shocked. Somebody's better than we think. Dan Campbell and Nick Seriani weren't viewed his home runs, and they've been terrific.
Starting point is 00:15:27 By the way, Raiders fans who think they can get Ben Johnson, he's not taking that job. That would be a major downgrade to go from offensive coordinator of a contender in the NFC to the Raiders. Like, Ben Johnson's not going to Raiders. No. All right. I've got a great parlay for you this weekend. and thanks to Draft King Sportsbook, new users. Please use the code Hurd when you download the app.
Starting point is 00:15:51 Now for my parley pick of the week via Draft King Sportsbook. Dolphins at the Chiefs, Kansas City, overseas minus two and a half. Andy Reid off a loss. Mahalms off a loss. Kansas City has a much better O-line and defense. They rebound and I will swallow the two and a half points. Seahawks at the Ravens minus six. quarterback at home, better defense. I like the Ravens here. Ugly win over Arizona. They're a tough,
Starting point is 00:16:20 tough home favorite. I like them here to beat Seattle in cover. Bingles minus two and a half. I like them hosting the bills to cover. I think Cincinnati's defense is more consistent. Burroughs situationally at homes better than Josh Allen on the road. Three favorites, Chiefs Ravens, Bengals, I'll take all of them. You want to take the Herd Parlay. Check out Draft King's sportsbook. New users. Please use the code Heard when you download the app. 21 plus in most eligible states, but age varies by jurisdiction. Or when Kanye said that George Bush didn't like black people. I know what you're thinking. What the hell does George Bush got to do with Little Kim? Well, you can find out on the Look Back at it podcast. I'm Sam J.
Starting point is 00:18:49 And I'm Alex English. Each episode, we pick a here, unpack what went down, and try to make sense of how we survived it. Including a recent episode with Mark Lamont Hill, waxing all about crack in the 80s. To be clear, 84 is big to me, not just because, of crack. I'm down to talk about crack on day, but just so y'all know.
Starting point is 00:19:08 I mean, at this point, this is the second episode where we've discussed crack. So I'm starting to see that there's a through line. We also have AIDS on the table right now. Thank you for finishing that sentence. Yes. I don't think there's a more important year for black people. Really? Yeah.
Starting point is 00:19:24 For me, it's one of the most important years for black people in American history. Listen to look back at it on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. All right, the Raiders fired their coach. The question now, they put interim people in charge. Who should they hire as coach? Well, for a dozen reasons, and I'll give you a few, my first choice would be Jim Harbaugh, and my second choice would be keep calling Jim Harbaugh. He is the only coach, one in the country, one that you know will work. He worked four for four. Small college San Diego, bigger college Stanford, NFL Niners,
Starting point is 00:20:03 big college Michigan. Four for four. His dad was a good coach. His brother's a great coach. Maybe it's in the jeans. He always has a vision. Teams get physical. He's relentless, passionate. He is the only coach you know it works.
Starting point is 00:20:20 And like Pete Carroll when he went to the Seahawks out of USC and Jimmy Johnson when he went to the Cowboys out of Miami, Harbaugh would have a three-year advantage over the rest of the NFL in terms of personnel. Because when you come from a major program, a USC of Michigan and Miami, and you are recruiting five-star, four-star players, you also know the guys you missed out on, not the guys who came to your program.
Starting point is 00:20:47 So Pete's first three drafts, Jimmy Johnson's first three drafts, they were running circles around the league. Over time, you've got to have the right GM, but you can get a huge advantage in your first three drafts out of college. So ask yourself, what's the hit rate on coordinators to head coach? 30%. What's the hit rate on college guys to the NFL? 20%.
Starting point is 00:21:14 How about 100%. Jim Harbaugh also turns things around quickly and that matters because Mark Davis is impatient. When he went to the Niners, six wins to 13 in six months. Michigan 5 to 10 in six months. He is a quick turnaround artist. It's very parcels. It also, and this is a thing, sends a message. We now want to compete with Kansas City.
Starting point is 00:21:43 We want to compete with Baltimore. We want to compete with the big boys. Pete Carrolls, San Francisco. I mean, Andy Reid's been coaching 40 years at the highest level. When the Chargers hired Brandon Staley with four years NFL experience. What was the message? He was the cheapest candidate.
Starting point is 00:22:05 They hired a defensive guy from crosstown, didn't have to move four years, non-head coaching experience, and you think twice a year you're going to go toe to toe and beat Andy Reid? Come on, man. You don't even want to compete. Jim Harbaugh sends a message.
Starting point is 00:22:21 We're looking for Super Bowls. We want to compete at the highest level. Jim Harbaugh is clearly, clearly the answer. All we have here is a question. How good do you want to be? I mean, if you're paying this much money for Josh McDaniels not to coach, you're obviously smart enough to pay for Jim Harbaugh to coach.
Starting point is 00:22:47 Write some big checks. Andy Reid twice a year. Sean Payton now twice a year. Took him about eight games. He's got the Broncos turned around. The Chargers probably. within a year, they make a coaching move. You're going to go with an interim?
Starting point is 00:23:03 Special teams guy. Guy that's never been a head coach. Take a big swing. Take a big cut. J-Mack with the news. No, no, no, no. Turn on the news. This is the herd line news.
Starting point is 00:23:18 I like that take. Go after Jim Harbaugh. And then when he says, no, what's your backup option? And don't say call him again, because he's going to hit, just quickly hit, go voicemail. You know, who never takes no for an answer? People that don't take no furniture. Make him take the job. No state tax. He loves car racing.
Starting point is 00:23:36 We'll get your ownership on the track. I mean, seriously, you can always get Cs to Bath. You didn't want to be a Yankee. The checkbook, he was a Yankee. So they're now paying Gruden and, according to one report, Gruden and McDaniels to not coach their team. You think they're going to spend for Harbaugh, too? That's a lot of dead money, as I like to say.
Starting point is 00:23:57 All right, go get an interim guy. See how it works. It worked. Oh, well, I don't know. It's a tough job. I don't think it's a great job right now. Because, by the way, have you seen the scuttle about Devante Adams, like, really wanding out? And Aaron Rogers telling the Jets, hey, hey, let's go get, let's go trade for Devante.
Starting point is 00:24:13 Well, the Jets tried. Joe Douglas tried, knocked on doors to get a number 1A receiver, and people didn't answer the phone. So he did try. One B to Garrell Wilson. Let's put that in perspective. All right, let's start with the Kansas City Chiefs coming. off their first loss of the season to the Broncos.
Starting point is 00:24:30 Very sloppy performance, five giveaways. Mahomes was sick. I know that's an excuse, but he was. Here's what Andy Reid had to say about the team's week showing. It was a combination of things. You know, it was one of those where we were kind of chasing, whether it was starting with me with a play call, it was one of everything.
Starting point is 00:24:51 So when I mentioned that last night about there were things that I hadn't seen before, from this group who I have a lot of trust in. I saw things I hadn't seen before. So somewhere I didn't get that point across to the guys and, you know, and my coaches. So we've got to make sure we do a better job there. By the way, Andy is willing to raise the volume on coaching. Watch Kansas City play a great game overseas. We talked about liking the chiefs.
Starting point is 00:25:27 Okay, so the game's in Germany. Yeah. Okay. And all the details are not out, but reportedly the chiefs, you know, they had their Halloween party this week in Kansas City. Yeah. Taylor Swift, there were reports that she was there. I'm assuming pictures are going to come out.
Starting point is 00:25:41 I guess people dressed up as Swift, whatever. The Miami Dolphins have been in Germany for a couple days down. Like, they're taking this game laser-focused. Seriously, they're already over there. We know Tyree kills all in. Chiefs are hanging around K.C. to throw their Halloween party to enjoy it, life. I know I'm not going to overreact Casey fan settled down but I'm just saying like priorities Colin
Starting point is 00:26:02 you know like you know those European trips you've got to get to London first get there get acclimated giving me some pause on the Kansas City Chiefs just a little bit now the money's already the money's out of my account I bet the Chiefs I am though feeling a little I don't know how do you feel about something like that? Well I think it's amazing everybody complains about stuff
Starting point is 00:26:21 and then we always go oh this is really good I can remember when I was young people complaining that the speed limit going to 65 from 55, oh, everybody's going to die. And then carmakers are like, we'll build better cars. And we have fewer death rates on the freeway than more. And it's just like, you know, it's transfer portal than college football. It's the end of it.
Starting point is 00:26:38 No, college football ratings are up. It's one of these things that London games everybody complained about. I get a wake up, have a strong coffee, and I get the Chiefs and Dolphins. You kid, I love the fact they're playing overseas. I've been getting Jaguar games, Trevor Lawrence, Bahalms, too. I can't wait. Tennessee Titans. I'm trying to look this up on the internet right now.
Starting point is 00:26:59 How long is the flight from KC to Munich? That's got to be a marathon flight. Nine miles, nine hours. I don't know, man. Getting worried about the Chiefs. Come on, Andy Reid. Lock in, this is not the time to be goofing around. By the way, I know people care.
Starting point is 00:27:12 Taylor Swift, there's a report she may go to the Germany game. I don't see it because she starts the South American leg of her tour in Argentina on November 9th. I know this is news your audience can certainly use. Next up, let's get to the Jets. You know, listen, they've been quasi hot here lately to getting to four and three's big. And all anybody wants to ask the GM about is Aaron Rogers. Oh, is he coming back? Hey, I saw a story yesterday.
Starting point is 00:27:38 He's coming back. Isn't that crazy? I'm going to go off here in a second. But let's first hear GM Joe Douglas on Aaron Rogers and his potential return. I'm not a doctor, so I can't go into the specifics on the rehab. But, yeah, I mean, we're, we're experienced. and Aaron to be back. I'm not putting anything out there
Starting point is 00:27:59 like that. Again, that's not my place. I'm not a doctor and, you know, I don't have anything any breaking news for you like that. Just to see him be able to do some of the things that he's doing. Again, it's not surprising. I think we all know the competitor, the competitive makeup that Aaron
Starting point is 00:28:15 has. And, you know, I think he said it before, like he has goals and he's going to chase those goals. It's just good having them around. It's just when he's out there pregame, when he's is when he's around the team. You know, it's just good having him in the building. What do you make of this?
Starting point is 00:28:30 I'll let you go first. I'll let you go first. I don't want to. Well, I mean, it sounds like a revolutionary medical experience, which I tend to not believe in. So I think he's going to rush back. My concern that he would get hurt again, because there is a history on 39-year-olds in Achilles surgery.
Starting point is 00:28:50 And I think Aaron likes sort of being viewed as controlled. and a risk taker and doing his own thing with medicine and spirituality. And I think that's wonderful. But there's a history with older guys and Achilles surgeries. And if you rush back and rip it up, then where are the Jets? Then you got to go draft the quarterback with your second pick. It's silly, Colin. It's really dumb. So for Rogers to return from an Achilles in five months, he would have to be like a medical marvel. Like you read about kids who are trapped under the ice in frozen water for like 15 minutes and their pulse stops. They come back to life.
Starting point is 00:29:29 Like that kind of stuff they make movies about. There's zero chance he's throwing a football in a December football game or even January. Zero. No chance, Colin. Five months are we crazy? Remember Cam Acres came back early, the running back from the Rams. He rushed back in like, I think it was like seven months. And Cam Acres was terrible.
Starting point is 00:29:48 And it really like hindered all of his growth and development. He looked awful when he came back. why would a quarterback rush back in five months? Well, I mean... It's insane. Yeah, I mean, not only would you have to recover, but are you in cardio shape? I mean, are you in getting hit shape?
Starting point is 00:30:02 Can you run away from a defensive end? Like, you're not going to be able to do that. I just, it feels silly. Like, let's focus on Zach Wilson against a Chargers defense. Can they do anything Monday night? Zach Wilson is going to be behind. Looks like four backup offensive linemen who weren't the starters in week one.
Starting point is 00:30:18 Looks like. That's not good. Bosa and Mac. still like the Jets in this one? I said I'm not betting it. I like them less. That news came out yesterday that O'Lignment are not playing.
Starting point is 00:30:31 So there's not been many quarterback matchups in the NFL this season that are a bigger mismatch than Herbert and Zach Wilson with a bad O' line. The Chargers history is traveling east, they'll screw it up. And I'm saying that without a bit of cynicism,
Starting point is 00:30:45 not being glib. Chargers should roll the Jets. Zach Wilson with four backup offensive linemen. This should be a complete blowout. However, and it won't be. So we know the Chargers offense is limited outside of Keenan Allen, right? Who scares you? Josh Palmer? I like, like him, but. Austin Echler, Palmer, Allen, good left tackle. Herbert can move. So you put sauce gardener to follow around Keenan Allen. He's not going to go off. And now it's what, Austin Echler against one of the best linebacking groups in the league? Herbert's pretty good.
Starting point is 00:31:13 Herbert's very good. I just don't think he has options, man. We should watch this game together. You want to see the full range of emotions? I'm never going to watch a Jets game with you. You'll be a crazy, I don't like watching games with fans. They're crazy. With fans? Even my friends who are. What about friends? I watch games by myself.
Starting point is 00:31:31 That's what I do. It's cold-blooded. Final story, the Bears made a, I don't know, we talked about this a little yesterday. Curious move at the deadline, sending a second round pick, which is going to be in the early 30s to the commanders for impending unrestrictive free agent, Montez Sweat. Now, Sweat's a very good player and a very good edge rusher and getting a lot of sacks. Every team could use that. Is there going to be a player in the second round as good as Montez Sweat? Well, you've got to sign Montez Sweat in the offseason or tag him.
Starting point is 00:31:58 So you've got to pay him a lot of money. Well, yeah, but you're not paying your quarterback, and you're probably drafting another quarterback so you know the message there is fairly clear. Might as well pay it, Dean Lineman. We're not paying a quarterback. Isn't that the message? Yes, the downside to making this move yesterday is the player and his agent now have all the leverage. Because they know you have to spend on it.
Starting point is 00:32:20 That's why a lot of times when you do. moves like this, you have to weigh, are we willing to give all the leverage to the player and his agent? And the Bears just did. But that's a very good player. That is a very good football player. There's some kind of handshake deal. But I don't know. What if sweat goes off here and dominates? Then he's going to ask for more money or they guess hurt or something. I don't know. Damage goods. It just doesn't feel like a smart move. Well, they have two of the first five picks. So they don't desperately need a second. They get the quarterback. No, no. They need talent, Colin. Did you just see this team against the Chargers? They got nobody.
Starting point is 00:32:52 Who's their top three defenders? The kid Edmonds, they overpaid for? They have a corner. Yeah, listen, I don't think they're well-run. I'll say this right now. I don't think Justin Fields is going to work, but I don't think he'll get a shot somewhere else. I don't like anything.
Starting point is 00:33:07 Ownership, GM, coach, quarterback, I don't think it works. Nothing there. What are they great at? Nothing. Nothing. Give me their three best players. Well, DJ Moore, I'll give you. I also think Mooney can play.
Starting point is 00:33:20 Oh, stop. Comeet. Johnson, the corner's an interesting player. Have one offensive lineman, right tackle I like. Did you say Cole Komet? A tight end? What's wrong with that? You don't want.
Starting point is 00:33:31 Is he even like a top 15 tight end in the room? Well, I'm just saying you. He's told me the Bears' best players. They got nobody. I like a tight end, both two receivers. I like their right tackle. I like their corner. Johnson.
Starting point is 00:33:43 They got some kid. I think they have a safety I like, too. Eddie Jackson, is he still around? If we rank the 32 rosters, guarantee this is bottom five, right? Yes, it is. JAMAC with the news. Well, that's the news. And thanks for stopping by.
Starting point is 00:33:59 The Heard Line News. I have got some thoughts on the Packers. I thought it was very interesting that every team, the Bears, the Packers, the Vikings, and the Lions all sent messages to their fan bases yesterday. Everybody in that division made a move, and the message was clear in all. all of them. Plus, the college football rankings came out, and I don't care what order they're in, but something, and some of you are going to wince and cry, are not going to like it, but it is the future of college football.
Starting point is 00:34:39 Joel Clatt, top of next hour. Be sure to catch live editions of the herd weekdays in noon Eastern, 9 a.m. Pacific on Fox Sports Radio, FS1, and the IHeart Radio app. Hey, we're Kavino and Rich. It's the enhanced games. Some call it grotesque. Others say it's unleashing human potential. Either way, the podcast's superhuman documented it all, embedded in the games and with the athletes for a full year. Within probably 10 days, I'd put on 10 pounds.
Starting point is 00:36:13 I was having trouble stopping the muscle growth. Listen to Superhuman on the IHard Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. A win is a win. A win is a win. I don't care what I'm saying. Yep, that's me, Clifford Taylor the 4th. You might have seen the skits, the reactions, my journey from basketball to college football, or my career in sports media. Well, somewhere along the way, this platform became bigger than I ever imagined.
Starting point is 00:36:40 And now I'm bringing all of that excitement to my brand new podcast, The Clifford Show. This is a place for raw, unfilbert. to conversations with some of your favorite athletes, creators, and voices that not only deserve to be heard, but celebrated. Starting point is 00:37:25 Do you remember when Diana Ross double-tap Little Kim's boobs at the VMAs? Or when Kanye said that George Bush didn't like black people. I know what you're thinking. What the hell does George Bush got to do with Little Kim? Well, you can find out on the Look Back at a podcast. I'm Sam Jett. And I'm Alex English. Each episode, we pick you here, unpack what?
Starting point is 00:37:44 went down and tried to make sense of how we survived it. Including a recent episode with Mark Lamont Hill, waxing all about crack in the 80s. To be clear, 84 is big to me, not just because of crack. I'm down to talk about crack all day, but just so you all know. I mean, at this point, Mark, this is the second episode where we've discussed crack, so I'm starting to see that there's a through line. We also have AIDS on the table right now, so. They're finishing that sentence.
Starting point is 00:38:10 Yes. I don't think there's a more important year for black people. Really? Yeah. For me, it's one of the most important years for black people in American history. Listen to look back at it on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Sunday on Fox, it's one of the biggest games of the year. Dallas versus Philly. Dak versus Jalen in America's Game of the Week. The next chapter in this historic rivalry kicks off Sunday at 4 Eastern on Fox.
Starting point is 00:38:41 All right, yesterday in a move that didn't get discreet. much, but there was a real message. The Buffalo Bills got Rassul Douglas a tough physical corner from the Green Bay Packers. Is he a shutdown corner? Probably not, but he's a very good player. The Bills need a corner. They lost one to injury. He's a really good player.
Starting point is 00:39:02 And they gave the Packers a third round pick. Don't care about the fifth, third round pick. So Green Bay now has a first, two seconds, two thirds. What is the message? Let's not worry about Buffalo. Good team, Green Bay is not. They got a good corner. Why would you do that?
Starting point is 00:39:19 Give up a good corner. Your primary rival, the Minnesota Vikings, is deep and talented at wide receiver and tight end. The lions have a new star tied end. They've got weapons. Why with your two primary rivals having really good tight end wide receiver talent, would you give up on your second best corner in a tough, physical, plays hard every snap guy, Rasul Douglas?
Starting point is 00:39:44 because you're being intellectually honest. Green Bay knows we're going nowhere with Jordan Love. Let's collect ammo to potentially get in the Drake May, Caleb Williams sweepstakes. First rounder, two seconds, two thirds. Right now, currently Green Bay is at six. Right? And they're less of a football team today without Rasul Douglas. And the harder part of their schedules coming up,
Starting point is 00:40:13 the easy part they couldn't win games. I mean, yesterday Chris Sims, former NFL quarterback, suggesting they're going to go to Sean Clifford here in a couple weeks. Don't know if it's true, but why would you do this move when the Vikings and the lions in your division are very good at tight end and wide receiver?
Starting point is 00:40:31 Why would you give up a really valuable physical corner? Because you're being honest. It's a move on a chess board. The Packers, although they haven't advertised it, sort of have. The first move was that, weird two-year short deal to Jordan Love. Didn't it tell you the truth? The second move was lower your expectation, said Matt Lefleur in camp. Green Bay's been telling us the entire time. The contract, the comments, the way they safeguard every snap. He can't even get like scripted
Starting point is 00:41:03 stuff down. They're telling you the truth. I thought everybody in this division, every single team, sent a message. The Packers sent a message. Jordan loves not it. We're drafting a quarterback. Let's accumulate first, second, third round picks. We're at six. We may have to get to two. Minnesota went and got Josh Dobbs.
Starting point is 00:41:27 What was the message? We need a smart grown-up who's currently playing in the NFL. We think we can become a wild card team. That was the message. The Lions went out and got Donovan People's Jones, a wide receiver. Why? They sent a message. Listen, we're good and have a message.
Starting point is 00:41:43 weapons. Jameson Williams is super talented, but that dude can't catch. He's not ready yet. And we need somebody who can catch. It doesn't have to be our number one option, but we need more guys who can make plays in the playoffs. The Lions sent a message about James Williamson, James Williams. And the Bears sent a message by getting Montez Sweat, which all the Chicago media laments this morning. This is not the Chase Claypool move. There's a million receivers out of college. There are not a million great edge rushers as good as Montezes. has sweat and probably none in the second round. So you're going to pay, if you're not going to pay your quarterback in this league and
Starting point is 00:42:19 Chicago set you a message, we're going to draft the quarterback. We're going to get four to five more years of not having to pay big money, cap hit to a quarterback. So let's go get a defensive end pass rusher who's better than anybody we're going to get in the second round anyway. We got two first round picks. What about the second? Sweats better than any of them.
Starting point is 00:42:38 But you got to pay him. So the chiefs pay. Jones. The Rams pay Aaron Donald. The Eagles pay defensive linemen. The Niners pay several. Cincinnati pays an edge rusher. Every good team in this league, bills pay Von Miller. The money in the NFL should be for star quarterbacks, left tackles, somebody on that defensive front, maybe a corner and a big weapon or two. That's where the smart GMs are paying the money. I mean, you look at Philadelphia. They had a lot of guys they were paying money to. You know what they did? Let's pay AJ Brown.
Starting point is 00:43:13 So everybody sent a message. The Packers, we're moving on. The Lions, we don't trust a young receiver out of Bama who's talented but can't catch. Vikings, we think we can be a playoff team. In Chicago, yeah, we're probably going to have to overpay for Montez Sweat. We're not paying our quarterback because we're getting another one. Every single team in that division sent a message. I always worried about Green Bay, small town.
Starting point is 00:43:42 we got our guy. Nope. You don't give up a good corner just to give up a good corner in a division where Minnesota and Detroit are stack with weapons. You don't do that. You do that when you're being honest with yourselves, when you're being true and clear and talking about winning. And that's what matters.
Starting point is 00:44:02 Okay, so very interesting. So the college football rankings came out yesterday. And I don't really care of the order. Ohio state's not the best team, but they've played the best schedule. They got the two best wins, so Ohio State's number one. But I think it's interesting if you go to the top 12 teams. Forget the top 10. If you go to the top 12 teams, Ohio State, Georgia, Michigan, Florida, State, Washington, Oregon, Texas, Bama, Oklahoma, Ole Miss, Penn State, Missouri.
Starting point is 00:44:29 As of next year, only Florida State at four, 11 of those 12 teams next year will be Big 10 or SEC teams, 11 of 12. And LSU, USC are probably the most underachieving teams. They'll bounce back next year, my guess. You are looking at those college football rankings at the future of the sport. Two conferences. What about the little guy? Tell me the industry that we rely on the little guy to pay the bills.
Starting point is 00:45:04 Tech, nah. Media, nah. Politics. Remember Bernie Sanders was going to win the Democratic? nomination and the Democrats privately, quietly, had already steered it in Hillary's direction. That's the way big politics work. And big tech and big finance and big media and big academics. It's not about the little guy.
Starting point is 00:45:27 For years, I have been praying that we would get closer to what that ranking shows us. Consolidation, clarity, less clutter, less confusion. There is now no confusion going forward. Big Ten SEC is where it's at. That's where it's at. College football's got too many irrelevant games, too many people pleading to get into playoffs, and then they get crushed by Georgia by 40 points.
Starting point is 00:45:59 Colin, what about the little guy? Folks, here's a rule in life. If big money is involved, consolidation is inevitable. It doesn't matter what it is. Could be private jet industry. Once there's big money involved in any industry, consolidation is inevitable. So knock yourself out. Go to the cool indie film.
Starting point is 00:46:23 But half of America was dressed as Ken and Barbie on Halloween. Okay. I don't, I no longer, if you're a hippie, you're 23, you're idealistic. The little guy, the garage band. awesome. Go watch them. I don't care. But in the end, who's opening the sphere in Vegas? It's U-2. And you too want to go to the sphere in Vegas to watch U-2. So this is the future of college football. Texas, Oklahoma going to the SEC,
Starting point is 00:46:58 Oregon, Washington, SC, UCLA, go into the Big Ten. Go look at that top 12. 11 of 12 are from the two conferences. and everybody's going to grumble. And you grumbled about the NIL. And you grumbled about consolidation. And you grumbled about the transfer portal. Ratings are up 12%. And they're going to be up, if it's a stock by it, 15% next year.
Starting point is 00:47:24 Watch the college football ratings explode next year. Baseball is dying for a number. Dying for the Yankees. Dying for the Braves. Bryce Hart, the Dodgers. College football has got it all next year. It's got all these huge brands, more Texas, Oklahoma against SEC teams, more Oregon, Washington, USC, UCLA, playing Michigan, Penn State, Ohio State. That is the future of college football.
Starting point is 00:47:52 And I'm not going to fight it because I got nothing against indie bands. But what was everybody dressed up last night as? Ken and Barbie. You dress up as an indie band. I'm for it. But no industry that gets big money does not consolidate. Fact, they all consolidate. Even Bitcoin was around for an hour, started consolidating.
Starting point is 00:48:15 NFTs, worthless, started consolidating. Everything consolidates. I agree with you almost across the board. That being said, Colin, don't you think there's just a little, a hint of value in an undefeated Boise state cracking the top 12 and sneaking into the playoff, let's see what they can do against Georgia. Maybe they're going to lose 49-0. Probably will. But do you want to
Starting point is 00:48:38 see a Cinderella, like in the NCAA, like in the NCAA tournament? Don't you want to see them have a chance? At least get a seat at the table in the playoff to take on a big boy? No. Okay. Right. No. There's a reason the upset we all talk about is Boise State in
Starting point is 00:48:54 Oklahoma. Oh, that was such a great game. One great game. I'll get 30 great games in the SEC and Big Ten. Joel Clatt Consolidator Next Another podcast
