Starting point is 00:00:00 This is an I-Heart podcast. Guaranteed Human. Another podcast from some SNL, late-night comedy guy, not quite. Unhumor me with Robert Smygel and friends. Me and hilarious guests from Bob Odenkirk to David Letterman help make you funnier. This week, my guest, SNL's Mikey Day and head writer, Streeter Seidel, help an a cappella band with their between songs banter.
Starting point is 00:00:23 Where does your group perform? We do some retirement homes. Those people are starving for banter. Listen to humor me with Robert Smigel and friends on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Imagine an Olympics where doping is not only legal, but encouraged. It's the enhanced games. Some call it grotesque.
Starting point is 00:00:42 Others say it's unleashing human potential. Either way, the podcast's Superhuman documented it all, embedded in the games and with the athletes for a full year. Within probably 10 days, I'd put on 10 pounds. I was having trouble stopping the muscle growth. Listen to Superhuman on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Hey, this is Robert from the Stuff to Blow Your Mind podcast. Joe and I are both lifelong Star Wars fan, so we're celebrating May the 4th with a brand new week of fun, thought-provoking Star Wars-related episodes.
Starting point is 00:01:16 Join us as we tackle science and culture topics from a galaxy far, far away, such as the biology of tauntons and wampas on the ice planet hot, or the practicality and corporate business sense of the Sith rule of the world. of two. Listen to Stuff to Bole Your Mind on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. A win is a win. A win is a win. I don't care what you're saying.
Starting point is 00:01:39 Yep, that's me, Cliver Taylor the 4th. You might have seen the skits, my basketball and college football journey, or my career in sports media. Well, now I'm bringing all of that excitement to my brand new podcast, The Clifers Show. This is a place for raw, unfills of conversations with athletes, creators, and voices that not only deserve to be heard, but celebrated. So let's get to it.
Starting point is 00:02:00 Listen to the Clifford show on the IHeard radio app, Apple Podcast, or wherever you get your podcast. Starting point is 00:02:21 or stream us live every day on the iHeartRadio app by searching Hurd. Now let's get this party. You're listening to Fox Sports Radio. Oh, here we go to suddenly Phrenetic Monday, live in Los Angeles. It's the herd. Wherever you may be and however you may be listening. Thanks for making us part of your day. One hour from now on a suddenly busy Monday, Colin Wright, Colin Wrong, J. Mack joining me.
Starting point is 00:02:49 Sometimes we get lucky. This time slot gives us, furnishes us, about once or twice a month. A story breaks right before we go on the air. and the rest of our show is worthless. But that's okay. We like to pivot, and we got ourselves a story with Lamar Jackson. Yeah, I made a pivot to a shirt change color this morning. Notice anything about it?
Starting point is 00:03:08 Ravens Purple. Oh, yeah. Very excited for this week. Okay, so here's the story in the last half hour, Lamar Jackson. This has been weird. You don't get like, you know, an athlete in their prime and a stable organization having an ugly negotiation very often. Lamar Jackson sent out a letter. He said March 2nd, I requested a trade from the Ravens.
Starting point is 00:03:31 They've not been interested in meeting my value. I love the game of football. Thanks, Raven fans for everything. So, you know, the question immediately is what's the market? Well, here's the thing we've talked about with Lamar Jackson. We said it last week. It's very Kauai and Leonard. It's very unorthodox.
Starting point is 00:03:48 He uses a family member as an agent. He's non-trusting. And it's odd. It's just not the way generally. it goes, it makes it tougher for the league. It makes it tougher for the player. It makes it tougher for the team. Baltimore is looking at it very simply. We like you a lot, but we won before you. In the Tom Brady and Peyton Manning eras in the AFC, Baltimore was 15 and 8 in the playoffs with two Super Bowls. Flacco and Dilfer. They're like, we love you. We won Super Bowls with those guys.
Starting point is 00:04:19 In the Brady era, in the Peyton Manning era. And Lamar is one and three in the playoffs since 28 no quarterback that has had multiple playoff games, has a worse passer rating or a worse completion percentage, and now he's noisy, and now he's hurt. And I'm not saying Lamar's unrealistic. He's a dynamic player that wins 75% of his games. I think Atlanta, the Colts, Washington, New England, Tennessee, if the Aaron Rogers things falls apart with the jets, you've got to look. Atlanta, to me, I said this last week, cap space, an offensive coach, weak conference
Starting point is 00:04:54 and division and their star tight end and star receiver, you don't have to pay him for three years. Lamar Jackson and Atlanta feels like a home run, but he's got the injuries. He's unorthodox. There's the money if he wants a fully guaranteed contract. Folks, there's just not much of a market for him. There's not. Well, well, Deshaun Watson, I know. And Kirk Cousins got a guaranteed deal.
Starting point is 00:05:18 It didn't mean the Patriots and the Packers had to copy them. Yes, Deshaun Watson was overpaid. and fully guaranteed. The Ravens are like, why would we follow the Browns? Their attire fire were the Ravens. We're 15 and 8. Two Super Bowls in the Brady and Manning era. So I think Baltimore looks at it and thinks, we'd love to sign you.
Starting point is 00:05:41 But we're not going fully guaranteed. Think about it simply. It's a big company with a lot of success before you, the employee, showed up. You show up, your dynamic, and they love you. But they were very successful without you. you've gotten a little unorthodox, not had quite the high-level success the company hoped, and now you want a fully guaranteed deal because a poorly run company across the street did it to their employee. And Baltimore's like, we're not going to do that. We're not going to cave. We'll give you a
Starting point is 00:06:08 contract. It'll be a good contract. But if you're not guaranteed to play on Sunday, we're not guaranteeing all the money, which I think is completely realistic. But I also think Lamar Jackson looks, because he doesn't have a super powerful agent, he looks at the market and goes, look what Deshaun Watson got. I'm better than him. And he is better than him. So that's the situation today. Remember, Aaron Rogers and Brady, Tom Brady left New England. He had two teams after him. Aaron Rogers doesn't have a market. So when you're expensive, you've been hurt and you kind of do business from an unorthodox style. And here's the thing. I've learned this with kids. I've got six different kids, step kids, biological kids. They're all different. Some are more emotional.
Starting point is 00:06:48 Some are more thin skin. Some are more sensitive. and I see this all the time. It's not a bad thing. But Kauai Leonard does not trust kind of the system. I think Lamar Jackson tends to be a little untrusting. That's why he took his mom as an agent. Or Kauai took his uncle as an agent. Maybe they're non-trusting.
Starting point is 00:07:08 A little sensitive. I'm here for it. Like everybody's different. But I do think it can hurt your value, especially on the heels of Aaron Rogers and Kyler Murray. That teams look around. This has always been a copycat league. Everybody looks around and you're like,
Starting point is 00:07:21 we don't want to get into a, We don't want to get into an Aaron Rogers situation. We don't want to get, I mean, the Packers are like, we'll take Jordan Love. We don't even know if it's any good. We're going to get rid of Aaron Rogers, who's won two MVP's in three years. We want to get out of the drama. So the question is, is this recent drama for Lamar? Is it just temporary?
Starting point is 00:07:41 Or is this who he is? Because if it's who he is, I can see the market shrinking even more. You know, when Mahomes goes on the market, all but about three teams would be interested. You know, the Chargers got their guy. Buffalo's got their guy. Cincinnati's got their guy. But now, let's say you added a lot of injuries to Mahomes. The market shrinks. He wants fully guaranteed. It kind of shrinks. He's gotten unorthodox. It kind of shrinks. So I think the lack of playoff success, the demands for a guaranteed contract, it's shrinking. Very few players, I don't care what industry you're in. I don't care if it's movies. Not every director wants to work with every movie star. that's okay too and your market shrinks based on what you're demanding how easy are you to work with can we find the right people around you
Starting point is 00:08:26 i think Atlanta fits hey listen new england has everything needed to win a super bowl except speed and playmaking they could solve it with lamar jackson i said this last week they got the coach the defense the special teams the culture they got cap space i mean i to me if i'm new england i'm not beating josh allen with mac jones i don't know if i can beat mike McDaniel consistently. If Aaron goes to the Jets, New England's got everything but playmakers and speed. You could solve both with one guy. I think New England, right now New England's Super Bowl odds are like plus 6,000. That's worse than the Saints. I mean, maybe Bill Belichick wants to slowly get to the most wins ever for a coach and get seven to eight a year, or you can get 12 with Lamar Jackson. So I think you have to absolutely seriously consider that if you're New England.
Starting point is 00:09:14 But I think Baltimore is looking at it, and I think they're being very reasonable. In the Brady Manning era, 15 and 8 in the playoffs and two Super Bowls. Flacco got us one. Dilfer got us one. I mean, we watched at the end of last year, they were on second and third string quarterbacks, and they gave the Cincinnati Bengals, who I really believe could be the second best team in the NFL at worst third. They gave them fits with Joe Burrow.
Starting point is 00:09:38 Absolute fits. Needed a quirky defensive touchdown did the Bengals, or they could have lost the Ravens with a second third string quarterback. So Baltimore's saying, we're not selling the farm here. This is getting personal. How do I know it's getting personal? Because Lamar Jackson dropped this tweet this morning at the exact same time that John Harbaugh in the NFL meetings was going to speak in the coaches meetings.
Starting point is 00:10:03 Somebody in that room tipped him off. Somebody in the organization tipped him off. Harbaugh goes to the podium. Boom. Lamar drops it. So it's personal. And you don't want it to be personal. It generally doesn't get personal.
Starting point is 00:10:15 But in both instances, I get Lamar looking at, Deshaun's contract and saying, what what that guy got? Who's that guy? He's right. He's better. And I get the Raven saying, we're a good company. We win a lot of different ways. We've won Super Bowls with defense. We're not giving you a guaranteed, fully guaranteed contract.
Starting point is 00:10:37 So I read one story this morning that said the Colts with that number four pick. Remember, Baltimore gets two first round picks. the minute they give up, Lamar. So Baltimore is saying, we'll go get our quarterback. Keep your eye on the Colts. Number four pick. Colts could go, all right, let's get cheap at quarterback. Let's redo it.
Starting point is 00:10:59 Let's go find the next Lamar. Very possible. But this is fun. This is really good. Is it not? J. Mack, what do you make of it? Loving it. I do want to push back a little bit on what the market is for him.
Starting point is 00:11:14 So we had Aaron Rogers, not a big market. well, he's 39 years old. That's true. Russell Wilson, not a big market. He's 33. Remember last year? Yeah. Lamar Jackson just turned 26, Colin.
Starting point is 00:11:24 He is entering the prime. I know the history injuries behind him. Well, that's not a, but don't just throw it, you know, the injuries are he's young and hurt. And it's like NBA centers. Young and hurt doesn't get old and healthy. So Russell Wilson didn't have a history of injuries. Aaron had a collarbone surgery.
Starting point is 00:11:41 And in the last, in the last 22 games, he's missed 10. So like there's, it's a, it's, it's. The injuries aren't just a, you know, I mean, Buffalo's coach, Sean McDermick this weekend with 6-6-260-pound Josh Allen said, never misses games. It's like, we have to change our offense. He, who never missed a game, he's getting hit too much. We literally have to change our offense. Lamar is much more spindly and gets hit much more than Josh Allen.
Starting point is 00:12:09 At the same time, not to defend Lamar, he can win from the pocket. But when you don't have any receivers, as Baltimore has not provided him, it's a little tougher. And his numbers say he was excellent from the pocket last year. I think he could do that. Now, I know he's very capable running and dangerous. But Colin, I cannot envision a scenario where Baltimore lets him go to New England, right? Like, if you're Baltimore, you've got to match.
Starting point is 00:12:31 You can't let him go to Bill Belichick. Well, he sounds like it's very personal now. Like, if you're getting, if you're breaking up with somebody and it gets personal, that's different than, you know, you guys really are good together. People don't. People forgive. They don't forget. It sounds like, it sounds like, it sounds like.
Starting point is 00:12:46 Lamar Jackson is very much feel slighted by the organization and I'm pro Lamar, but I'm not pro-guaranteed, fully guaranteed contract. That would be idiotic at this point for an incredibly stable, well-run organization who would get two firsts if they moved it. How about this? Are you pro exclusive franchise tag where he would have got 45 million this year versus non-exclusive. He doesn't want that. He wants fully guaranteed and long. I would have no problem doing a fully guaranteed for a year. But I don't think Lamar wants that.
Starting point is 00:13:21 He probably doesn't. But he definitely doesn't want the $32 million. Well, that was the Ravens basically saying, go to the market, kid. So listen, I've been saying this. I'm Atlanta. Washington. Got to jump in there. Somebody has to.
Starting point is 00:13:36 This is not great. If you're Washington, you're going to sell 6,000 tickets to 10,000 tickets a game from Lamar fans. who'll just go across the river. Regionally, yep. Yeah, I mean, everybody in Washington knows how dying. He's the most popular pro football player in that entire region. Now, go get him.
Starting point is 00:13:53 As a guy who comes from the website background, have you seen him pushing his website this morning? Who? Lamar. No. Yeah, it's not a great look. He's got some kind of generic URL. The email address is Gmail.
Starting point is 00:14:06 It's just, Lamar's, I don't think he's fully thought this through. You know, I'm rooting for him. I hope he does well, but between the, and non-agent thing and this website. And last week, what was that infomercial thing with the weights? Yeah, it's pretty cringy. I don't want to say it feels Mickey Mouse, but I don't think he's getting great advice.
Starting point is 00:14:23 I agree. For self-promotion. Like, there's a lot of people who know what to do with starting a website and building it up and selling yourself, marketing yourself. I don't think he's doing a great job of that. He's leaving a lot of money on the table. Yeah. So it's fascinating.
Starting point is 00:14:38 I do think the league's better with Lamar. The league is better with exciting quarterbacks. Whether you like his style or. not. I've been defending him the last couple of years. He is, I had real doubts about him. Everybody had doubts about him. But he's become much more competent. You know, I pivot when I see new stuff. He's become much more competent in the pocket than people give him credit for. But listen, if I was Lamar, I would rather go to the NFC. It is wide. If I don't have to face Alan and Burrow and Herbert and now Russell with Sean Payton and I'm Lamar and I want to prove everybody
Starting point is 00:15:10 wrong, get me over to the NFC. Tomorrow. So we'll keep you posted. Be sure to catch live editions of the herd weekdays in noon Eastern 9 a.m. Pacific on Fox Sports Radio, FS1, and the IHeart Radio app. Imagine an Olympics where doping is not only legal but encouraged. Hey, this is Robert from the Stuff to Blow Your Mind podcast. Joe and I are both lifelong Star Wars fan, so we're celebrating May the 4th with a brand new week of fun,
Starting point is 00:17:05 thought-provoking Star Wars-related episodes. Join us as we tackle science and culture topics from a game. galaxy far, far away, such as the biology of taun tons and wampas on the ice planet hot, or the practicality and corporate business sense of the Sith rule of two. Listen to stuff to blow your mind on the iHeart radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Do you remember when Diana Ross double-tapped Little Kim's boobs at the VMAs? Or when Kanye said that George Bush didn't like black people.
Starting point is 00:17:34 I know what you're thinking. What the hell does George Bush got to do with Little Kim? Well, you can find out on the look back at it, podcast. I'm Sam J. And I'm Alex English. Each episode, we pick it here, unpack what went down, and try to make sense of how we survived it. Including a recent episode with Mark Lamont Hill waxing all about crack in the 80s. To be clear, 84 is big to me, not just because of crack.
Starting point is 00:17:56 I'm down to talk about crack on day, but yeah, yeah, literally. But just so y'all know. I mean, at this point, Mark, this is the second episode where we've discussed crack. So I'm starting to see that there's a through line. We also have AIDS on the table right now. Thank you for finishing that sentence. I don't think there's a more important year for black people. Really?
Starting point is 00:18:17 Yeah. For me, it's one of the most important years for black people in American history. Listen to look back at it on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. All right, just joined us. Lamar Jackson demanding a trade, requesting a trade, whatever you want with the Baltimore Ravens. We'll keep you up to date on that. Albert Breer, top of next hour. Colin Wright, Colin Wrong.
Starting point is 00:18:36 headline in Dallas, meltdown with the Mavericks. Over the weekend, Friday, they got beat by the awful Hornets, didn't show up. Jason Kidd after the game, not in a rosy mood. What did you think of the first half of that? It was awful. You know, I think just understanding, you know, to talk before the game of what we're playing for, playoffs or championship, and to come out, you know, in that first half, but more or less, the first quarter and give up 37.
Starting point is 00:19:13 The interest level wasn't high. Listen, I'd rather businesses be aggressive than play it safe. So, like, Kyrie was a big swing. They gave up a couple of second round picks and unprotected first, a couple of guys, the Mavs rolled the dice. You've got to do something. Luca was unhappy. Kyrie Irving's career, since he joined this team,
Starting point is 00:19:32 they've become awful defensively. We predicted that. You can't win a title. We predicted that with Kyrie and Luca. and out without a great rim protector. But Kyrie's career is two careers. With LeBron, excellent. That's three years.
Starting point is 00:19:47 The nine without him, a team killer, a chemistry killer, a coach killer, a franchise killer. And you can't deny that. But Luca also comes with challenges. Luca's temperamental. He's young. Doesn't give you much on the defensive end. Constantly bickering with officials. Not easy to play with.
Starting point is 00:20:04 Brunson struggled with him. Karee struggles with him. Porzinger struggled with him. He's a remarkable talent. We said this last week. Finding a superstar is the hardest thing in sports. The Mavericks have now done it twice. The second hardest thing, and it's not easy, is finding a number two that can play with him.
Starting point is 00:20:21 A Clay Thompson, a Scotty Pippen, a Kevin McHale with Larry Bird. It's hard. Not only the game, but the right temperament. Obviously, here's what doesn't work with Luca. Brunson, Kyrie, somebody that needs the ball. I'll say it again. The perfect player for him is Anthony Davis of the Lake. Like Luka, he plays defense.
Starting point is 00:20:43 Unlike Luca, he'll give you 29 a night and you don't have to design any plays for him. He's got a chill personality and Luca's young and plays a lot and AD's aging quickly and is often hurt. That's why AD and LeBron now suddenly are a bad fit. Luca and AD is a great fit. But who knows what happens? Do the Lakers want Kyrie Irving? But I do think teams roll the dice.
Starting point is 00:21:06 It's very hard to find it too. I mean, I'll give you an example. you guys all think Steph Curry and Clay Thompson joined at the hip. First of all, Steph played three years until they found him at Washington State, and then it took them three full years together before they won a title. So it was like, if you count the overlap year, it was like six years before Steph and Clay were joined and started winning titles. And even then, it's hard to win them back to back, right? You bring in Kevin Durant to do it.
Starting point is 00:21:32 It's hard to find twos in the right temperament. But Kyrie, they rolled the dice, they took a big swing. You can still move him. It's the NBA. He's got a nice layup package, as they say. He's got good handles. So in the NBA, you'll be able to move him. And he's very, very gifted.
Starting point is 00:21:50 He's a great finisher for a guy his size. But Dallas took a big swing, and it's not working. And I would say, Luca, though, comes with his own challenges. I mean, it'd be great if every star was like Janus and Tim Duncan. If they were all like Magic Johnson, it would just be perfect. Some guys are temperamental. They can be high maintenance. They can be a little needy.
Starting point is 00:22:12 They can be temperamental. And that is Luca. And he's pouting a little bit these days now suddenly doesn't like basketball. Is this as frustrated as you've been? I mean, yeah, it's really frustrating. You know, I think you can see it with me on the court. Sometimes I don't feel it's me, you know, just being out there. You know, I used to have really fun, smiling on court.
Starting point is 00:22:38 but it's just been so frustrating, maybe for a lot of reasons, not just basketball. Yeah, well, you know, it's a Kyrie thing. But again, Porzingis, Brunson, Kyrie. This has inflamed very quickly. The others took a little longer, but it's hard to find that too. I appreciate teams taking big swings.
Starting point is 00:22:57 Took Michael Jordan a few years pre-pippin. Couldn't get along with Orlando Warridge. Couldn't get along with some talented teammates, guys that wanted shots. That's okay. Nobody said it's easy. What would, work with Luca is a catch and shoot guy like a Clay Thompson.
Starting point is 00:23:11 That would be perfect. Somebody that doesn't need the ball can catch it and shoot it. That's why Clay works so well with Steph Curry, who's got the ball on his hands. I think Anthony Davis works. He'll give you 27 a night, and you don't have to design plays around him. He defends the rim. He'll do the dirty work. The number two sometimes has to be on the boards, has to be the great defender.
Starting point is 00:23:30 It's not going to get that much credit. It's often going to be the scapegoat. It's hard to find the McCales. it's hard to find the Clay Thompson's. You know, Tony Parker ended up being great. It's not easy. The Mavericks have found the superstar twice. There's organizations that have done that once in 40 years.
Starting point is 00:23:49 They've done it twice internationally. So give them credit for that. They took a big swing and now it's imploding. J-Mack with the news. Turn on the news. This is the Herdline News. I love that reference to Orlando Woolridge. How about that?
Starting point is 00:24:05 He was a great score. Awesome player in the 80s. And he and Jordan just didn't work. It's like, all right, they both need the ball. They're both great. They're both physical specimens. Like, it's not going to work. It's okay.
Starting point is 00:24:16 You know who's the big winner in this Maverick's meltdown? That would be you and I, Mr. Cowherd, because... Kyrie Irving. What a clown. All right, moving on. Let's start with my Jets. They're obviously a big talking point with the Aaron Rogers situation. Unsettled.
Starting point is 00:24:31 Robert Sala likes the idea of Rogers joining the team. here's what he had to say. Two years ago, when he first got here, speaking of course, of Sala, just thinking about where we were and how far we've come. To have a guy like him want to play for us is pretty cool and shows how far we've come.
Starting point is 00:24:49 He also added that someone asked about Zach Wilson, I think they were intimating about Lamar Jackson. He's like, Zach Wilson's our number two. Firm number two, confidence in Zach Wilson to be the backup quarterback this season in New York. Well, some people think Zach has some Aaron qualities, so maybe he could sit behind Aaron for a year or two and learn. Oh, what are those Aaron qualities?
Starting point is 00:25:10 Do you want to go on about them for a moment? Very clever arm. He moves well. Remember when I came on the show and called him the Mormon Mahomes before the draft? I blamed Daniel Jermeyer for that. You know, I had him on my podcast. He was telling him all this. He talked into him.
Starting point is 00:25:23 I got talked into it just like I did with Peyton Manning hyping up Adam Gaze. I know. Same thing. Remember that? I'm dating smart. He loved him. I'm like, all right. I trust Peyton Manning.
Starting point is 00:25:34 He's been successful at everything he's ever done. A decent career life for Peyton Manning. Yeah, on the field and off. Everything he does, everything he touches wins. He said Adam Gays is good. I'm like, oh, I like Adam Gase. Yeah. Can the Jets use Lamar Jackson as leverage for Aaron Rogers?
Starting point is 00:25:49 Will the Packers believe that? I think it is interesting. Lamar going to the market. I think you have to sit down if you're the Jets and have a discussion. I still think they'll get Aaron, but it's worth a meeting. It's worth coffee over, isn't it? How about this? What happens?
Starting point is 00:26:03 in this Aaron Rogers state of mind in the Green Bay Packers War Room, if it's announced Woody Johnson, Robert Sala and Company are on a plane to Baltimore to meet with, or wherever Baltimore is, Lamar is Miami, whatever. Let me ask you this. They're on a plane to meet with Lamar. What happens? What's the reaction? Is Aaron Rogers upset?
Starting point is 00:26:18 Because now he's not the bell of the ball? Let me ask you. Let me ask you. Lamar Jackson or Aaron Rogers? Who would you take? I would take Lamar Jackson. He's going to be there longer for sure. That's a no-brainer for me. I've said this for weeks.
Starting point is 00:26:30 Yeah. No, you have said that for weeks. Should Woody Johnson get on? a plane and go go recruit lamar jackson i don't think it's the worst idea okay and that's the vision in that division with mike macdmanuel and tua and josh allen you got to score bill bellichick can't get josh allen off the field you got a score so to me i mean aaron and lamar i think i think i lean with you i think i'd probably go lamar over erin he's just more dynamic and he's more committed i mean we know the kid wants to win he's winning 75 percent of a starts in the a fc
Starting point is 00:27:03 We talk about teams not having money. Sauce Gardner rookie contract. Breece Hall rookie contract. Oh, you guys got money. Garrett Wilson. Like, come on, Jets. All right, let's stay in the AFC East. Miami Dolphins made them a wild card last season,
Starting point is 00:27:14 despite Tua's injury concussion situation. They also picked up his fifth year option, which solidifies his role in the offense over the next two seasons. Mike McDaniel, very excited, Colin, about the future with Tua. He's had a really good offseason with his family and training and positioning himself to feel good moving forward. He's very healthy, vibrant. I can see a hunger in him.
Starting point is 00:27:36 Then I'm excited to watch play out. He did an unbelievable job being able to lead an offense in year one. That's a new language. This is his first year where he's going to be to have continued offense, play caller, and position coach. I don't doubt any of that either. I think we've said before that Mike McDaniel has taken accurate quarterbacks before and it works.
Starting point is 00:27:57 I don't doubt to it at all. It's the concussion. Even if he had a bad throwing shoulder, You can have surgery. The concussion thing is now such a talking point in the league. If he has one more, the avalanche of criticism, if he got hurt October 15th, you could not play a minimum until Thanksgiving, gone six weeks. It's not doubting to his hardworking, good kid, can complete throws.
Starting point is 00:28:22 He's probably almost an ideal quarterback. I mean, you could make an argument if he was two inches taller and didn't have the concussions. He's exactly, he's Brock Purdy. He's exactly kind of. That's why Brock Purdy's winning in this offense in San Francisco. Accurate, stable, gets rid of the ball quickly. Don't have to be a world-class athlete but can move okay. Two is built for this offense.
Starting point is 00:28:44 It's just the concussions change the entire paradigm of the discussion. If you guys were listening closely, he had the word if like seven times. If he could avoid it. Miami moving on. All right, we'll wrap up with college hoops, Colin. Now, you and I have been all over the tournament. We've been loving March Badness. Yes.
Starting point is 00:29:01 And something happened over the weekend because the games stunk, the referees got involved, and now we sit with the final four set. San Diego State, the Aztex, Yukon, which is obviously the favorite, FAU and Miami. They will be going to Houston Saturday. I think Yukon's going to roll. Do you know Yukon's winning average score by 22 points? That's unheard of. Well, can I just interject real quick?
Starting point is 00:29:28 You know, I was coaching my daughter in her championship game, so I missed the first half. Yes. Drew Timmy got jobbed by the refs. I mean, you can't call a fourth foul on Drew Timmy with 17 minutes left and expect her to be a basketball game. It was just pathetic. Maybe he shouldn't foul with 17 minutes left.
Starting point is 00:29:43 How about San Diego State? They call a foul with one second left on a drive? I agreed with that call. Oh, come on. Let the players decide the games. It's like holding. You never see holding called on like the penultimate play of the game with 10 seconds. You just don't see that in the NFL.
Starting point is 00:29:58 And they should have swallowed the whistle and given us overtime. As for Texas, I got some Texas friends who are irate. By the way. Texas was dominating the whole game. And guess who got involved? The last like seven minutes. A referee every single time. Whistle, whistle, whistle. Miami shot 32 free throws
Starting point is 00:30:14 in a college basketball game. That's 40 minutes. I know. It's a little much. It's an abomination. They ruined. I don't want to say they ruined a little strong. San Diego State? It's almost if you lost a bet. I might have lost a couple of seconds. A couple dollars, sorry. But Colin, I
Starting point is 00:30:30 I'll just wrap up with this. How much time are we going to spend on the final four this week? Not nearly as much as we would have. Yeah, I mean, it's not, it's not, I think Yukon's really good, but it, listen, we, it's not our job to make stuff interesting. No. Let's be honest. If we had a Kansas and a Duke, it would be okay to have Florida Atlantic as one of your
Starting point is 00:30:47 teams, but you get three non-traditional powers and a Yukon team that is big in that region, but it's not really, I mean, I, I live there. Yukon is massive east of the Hudson. You know what I mean? like that that's kind of in that space. It's like Dunkin' Donuts. The further you get away from Boston, the less popular it is. Starbucks is popular, Boise, Beijing everywhere.
Starting point is 00:31:09 There's a Dunkin' Donuts coming near me. We are. My family every day drives by it. Is it open yet? Is it open yet? We love Dunkin' Donuts. But Colin, it's just a tough sell when you're trying to, hey, man, we're going to be talking about San Diego State.
Starting point is 00:31:22 And I know they're a good story. But how many people are actually caring about, like last year we had Duke U.S. It will not be CBS executives. This is not ideal. But you know what? Sometimes it happens. The media and the fans always pull for the underdogs. Well, here you got underdogs.
Starting point is 00:31:39 We have Butler, remember back in the day of Gordon Hayward going up against Duke, but like Gordon Hayward was going to be a lottery pick. Also, Duke was in the game. Duke, the biggest brand in the sport. And it was nearly the upset. Yeah, it's not. Listen, I thought the first two weeks were amazing. This week had some clunkiness.
Starting point is 00:31:55 I still watched the games. Okay. Your wife tells you Saturday evening, hey, we have to go to this dinner party, and usually it's like the final four. I'm out. It's San Diego State FAU. Are you going dinner party or are you staying home to watch a game?
Starting point is 00:32:06 Well, I'm a sportscaster, so I'll probably stay home. Don't lie. Nobody believes that, Colin. Well, next weekend, isn't it WrestleMania next weekend Saturday? You better keep that open. Or tell your wife got WrestleMania next weekend. J-Mack with the news. Well, that's the news.
Starting point is 00:32:24 And thanks for stopping by. The Herd Lie News. So if you've not heard Lamar Jackson came out right before our show, he is now requesting a trade from the Baltimore Ravens, a very successful franchise that pre-Lamar won two Super Bowls and were 15 and 8, you know, in their last previous 23 playoff encounters, and that was in the era of Brady's in his prime and Peyton Manning in his prime. So Baltimore likes Lamar a lot.
Starting point is 00:32:51 But in the end, Lamar, it does sound like wants a fully guaranteed deal. or they're about close. I don't think the Ravens are being unrealistic, and I also get that Lamar Jackson, looking at Deshawn Watson's contract, is saying, that's crazy. The Ravens are saying, we're not letting the Browns dictate terms for us.
Starting point is 00:33:13 We win before you, we'll win after you. The Ravens also get two first-round picks if they move him. I think the market's pretty small based on the desire for a mostly fully guaranteed contract, and the injuries. But I've said it before. I'm Atlanta. I'm doing it. Now, John Harbaugh this morning was at the NFL owners meetings was asked about the Lamar Jackson trade request. I'm pretty fired up about Lamar Jackson. I mean, Lamar Jackson is a great player. Lamar came back in great shape last year. He's fired up to play. That's the Lamar that I'm looking
Starting point is 00:33:50 forward to seeing. Can't wait to get back on the grass and go to work and I'm confident that's going to happen. So you're following him on Twitter and seeing all the posts? I haven't seen the tweet. It's an ongoing process. I'm following it very closely, just like everybody else is here. And looking forward to a resolution. I'm excited thinking about Lamar all the time, thinking about him as our quarterback. Well, Lamar's taking it very personally. It happens. Maybe he's a sensitive guy. That's okay. Have a right to be. Not everybody's the same, but we'll keep you posted on this. Be sure to catch live editions of the herd weekdays at noon Eastern 9 a.m. Pacific. This is Jay Glazer, and you may know me for the world of football or fighting or even shows like HBO's ballers.
Starting point is 00:34:31 What you don't know is for my entire life, I have lived in something I refer to as the gray, depression, anxiety. So now I'm coming out with a new podcast, Unbreakable, a mental health podcast with Jay Glazer, where each week, while we talk about mental health, I hope to describe it. Give it words. Listen to Unbreakable with Jay Glazer on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Imagine an Olympics where doping is not only legal but encouraged. It's the enhanced games. Some call it grotesque. Others say it's unleashing human potential.
Starting point is 00:35:05 Either way, the podcast's Superhuman documented it all, embedded in the games and with the athletes for a full year. Within probably 10 days, I'd put on 10 pounds. I was having trouble stopping the muscle growth. Listen to Superhuman on the I-Hard Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. A win is a win. A win is a win.
Starting point is 00:35:27 I don't care what you're saying. Yep, that's me, Clivert Taylor the 4th. You might have seen the skits, the reactions, my journey from basketball to college football, or my career in sports media. Well, somewhere along the way, this platform became bigger than I ever imagined. And now I'm bringing all of that excitement
Starting point is 00:35:44 to my brand new podcast, The Clifford Show. This is a place for raw, unfiltered conversations with some of your favorite athletes, creators, and voices that not only deserve to be heard, but celebrated. Starting point is 00:36:27 Hey, this is Robert from the Stuff to Blow Your Mind podcast. Joe and I are both lifelong Star Wars fan, so we're celebrating May the 4th with a brand new week of fun, thought-provoking Star Wars-related episodes. Join us as we tackle science and culture topics from a galaxy far, far away, such as the biology of tantons and wampas on the ice planet hot, or the practicality and corporate business sense of the Sith Rule of Two.
Starting point is 00:36:51 Listen to Stuff to Blow Your Mind on the iHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts or wherever you get your podcasts. Do you remember when Diana Ross double-tap Little Kim's boobs at the VMAs? Or when Kanye said that George Bush didn't like black people. I know what you're thinking. What the hell does George Bush got to do with Little Kim? Well, you can find out on the Look Back at it podcast. I'm Sam J.
Starting point is 00:37:13 And I'm Alex English. Each episode, we pick it here, unpack what went down, and try to make sense of how we survived it. Including a recent episode with Mark Lamont Hill, waxing all about cracking the A-Aid. To be clear, 84 is big to me, not just because of crack. I'm down to talk about crack all day, but just so y'all know. I mean, at this point, this is the second episode where we've discussed crack.
Starting point is 00:37:35 So I'm starting to see that there's a through line. We also have AIDS on the table right now. Thank you finishing that sentence. I don't think there's a more important year for black people. Really? Yeah. For me, it's one of the most important years for black people in American history. Listen to look back at it on the IHeart Radio app.
Starting point is 00:37:54 Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Saturday on Fox, baseball is back and back with a huge doubleheader. First, Brandon Crawford and the Giants battle Aaron, Judge, and the Yankees. Then Bryce Harper and the Phillies take on Corey Seeger and the Rangers. It all begins Saturday at 3.30 Eastern on Fox. So the Lakers have seven games left, five on the road, lost at home to the Chicago Bulls yesterday. Give Chicago credit. they shot really, really well.
Starting point is 00:38:24 It was just one of those games where they shot really well. So let's keep it real with the Lakers. They're not going to win a championship. Teams in March that are under 500 are not going to win the championship. Like, get over it. They're not beating Milwaukee or Boston or a Philly or a Denver probably. Let's get over it. But that doesn't mean there's not value.
Starting point is 00:38:45 Job number one in these remaining games showcase Anthony. Davis. You can call it the playing tournament. Knock yourself out. I'm going to call it the AD showcase. Dallas now has a Luca problem. AD can solve it. He defends. Warriors lack size in the front court, not getting any scoring from their bigs. Celtics, Janus, how do we defend him? Come up short again. Nicks found their star point guard. Like Julius Randall a lot, you're not winning a championship if he's your two. Holding on to hopes that Anthony Davis is the answer is ridiculous. You cannot team him at this point with his body with an old guy that misses games.
Starting point is 00:39:36 AD needs to be teamed with a young guy that is overwhelmingly healthy. So LeBron and AD were a very good pairing for about two years, but they have quickly become a bad pairing. because of his physical inconsistency, LeBron's not available for 30, 40 games, and AD's not available for 25 to 30. So you've got to team him with young, healthy stars, and he can add tremendous value. We saw this with the Rams. They brought in Matt Stafford. It looked like it was brilliant for a year. But Stafford's not mobile.
Starting point is 00:40:10 He'd always been beat up a little behind bad offensive lines. And then the Rams offensive line fell apart, don't have a lot of depth. And suddenly, Stafford of the Rams is not a great pairing now. They need a quarterback who's younger that can move. This happens to businesses all the time. It feels great until it doesn't. And AD and LeBron doesn't work. AD has to be connected to a younger star that is consistently available to play.
Starting point is 00:40:43 So you can call it to play in tournament. You got to showcase him. you got to put him out there, let him score. Austin Reeves is a wonderful story. I love the Austin Reeves story. Anthony Davis is a really cool trade package. Celtics, if they don't have an answer for Embed in Janus and Robert Williams, yeah, Robert Williams gets hurt, AD gets hurt.
Starting point is 00:41:06 AD gives you a ton on the offensive end. I think if the Celtics lose again and they can't, and Robert Williams is not available, they're going to make a move. Can't keep running the same thing back? Marcus Smart's getting older. Robert Williams can't stay healthy. Jason Tatum and Jalen Brown, maybe need a third. Maybe you have to move Jalen Brown.
Starting point is 00:41:26 I'll say it again. Warriors are getting no scoring from their front court. If they get rolled by Yokic in the playoffs, they need size. They don't need it every night. They just need it in big games in the playoffs. You go get AD. Luka now doesn't defend. They need somebody who doesn't need the ball,
Starting point is 00:41:43 who can defend and drop 28. That's Anthony Davis. Austin Reeves is a wonderful story. AD's a wonderful player. So top six or seven players when he tells the, let's not get caught up in all this. We're going to win a championship. Stop.
Starting point is 00:41:57 Go look at NBA history. Teams under 500 in late March don't win the title. It's not going to win a championship. Even if they got in the playing tournament and had like a Denver first round and then had to go, they're not going to roll through Denver and it goes seven games. You think you're going to get LeBron and AD in another seven game or after that? They're not good enough to sweep teams. They're not Milwaukee.
Starting point is 00:42:19 Right? Like this team's not going to roll through teams in the playoffs. They're going to be six and seven games series one after another, after another, after another. You're not winning four and five series. Four series. You're not going six and seven for all of them. Get out of that space. Seek value with AD.
Starting point is 00:42:36 I think he's got it. My big takeaway from the NCAA tournament. So I've told my wife this for years is that I don't want. want to, you know, go to Palm Springs, play golf, and get old fast. I want to be around young people. So I've said I'd like to retire at least part of the year in a ski town. Young people, they party, they ski, it's fun, it's active, there's hiking, biking. I don't want to be around a bunch of old people complaining about their taxes. That's not how I want to age. I want to have some juice, some energy. And I think hanging around young people keeps you young. So Jim Laranegas,
Starting point is 00:43:11 73 and he's in the final four. He's been around forever, but he's, he was one of those guys that embraced the NIL immediately. Nick Saban embraced it. He's 71 years old, both college coaches around young people. Meanwhile, you've got Greg Popovich, who still won't embrace the three point shot in the 70s. And from what I can tell, Bill Belichick is completely toned deaf to offense. When you hang around as a pro coach, you hang around an older owner and executives and the players are older. And that's not to say Andy Reid hasn't hit it out of the park, but I think Pete Carroll was starting to feel old.
Starting point is 00:43:49 They traded Russell Wilson. They hit on a bunch of draft picks. Seattle now is a younger team. And Pete feels younger. Age is not like an issue anymore with Pete. Hang around young people. It'll keep you young. It'll keep you relevant.
Starting point is 00:44:03 But that's what my takeaway is in this college environment, it forces Sabin, whether it's the kids' music, their language. language, their sayings, their terms, their tech, their friends, what they're eating. You hang around young people. It keeps you young. And I think Saban and Lernege are just two of men. I mean, to the very end, Coach K in his mid-70s, relevant. Roy Williams, to the end, at 70, relevant. Popovich still won't embrace the three. He's hanging around older guys. He falls in love with his culture, his ideas. And so I don't know if Miami's going to win it. I will say this. I thought they were the second best team on the floor for most of it. I'm not going to
Starting point is 00:44:44 entirely blame the refs. I do think Lerenegas is a really good coach, but I love what he's done in Miami. I think he's fantastic. I don't think the final four is going to be the most riveting final four of my life. I do think the officials drove everybody crazy over the weekend. But I will say this. You know how you can kind of see certain things coming, like, you know, whether it's politics or whether it's tech. I told friends this years ago. I said, for years and years, we know that England's highly educated in Europe and their educational system. They speak multiple languages, the French school system.
Starting point is 00:45:21 It's not that Europe's not educated, probably more educated than us, but their fans are crazy. They're nuts. You hear the term soccer hooligans, right? You're like, ah, why are they so nuts? Some of it is, and I love gambling, sports gambling. Once there's gambling, when fans pour on the field, who do they go after? They go after the refs. And I said this to a friend a couple years ago.
Starting point is 00:45:43 I am a huge advocate of sports gambling. It's got a 1% disorder rate. Alcohol's got six and a half. The average bet by the average American sports fan is $4. Go ask Fan Duel and Draft Kings. It's $4. You know, most people have it under control. You and I have it under control.
Starting point is 00:46:01 Most people do. But I told a friend years ago, I said, with legalized sports gambling, the officials are going to get more crap and fans will now solely blame officials because now you're losing money, not just your team losing. And as we have this rollout and legalize gambling, which I'm for, Supreme Court said you can gamble, it's rolling across the nation. I don't know how many is it legal in 30 states now. It'll eventually probably be 45.
Starting point is 00:46:26 I have noticed in the last year, every loss is the refs. It used to be, I mean, everything now, bottom line is, Texas is not a great college basketball team. Every one of these teams, except Yukon, is good. How many NBA guys are playing this weekend? These teams are not, they're not great. Very diluted, a lot of chemistry, transfer portal. It's average. It's not a great year.
Starting point is 00:46:53 Now, Duke, Kentucky next year, both bringing in like four, five-star guys could be very, very good, very young, very good. But, you know, this weekend, I made this prediction. I said, you go watch Europe, who's been way ahead of us on legalized gambling. You watch. Every loss now is the officials. my entire life, there's go either way calls. The San Diego State foul, it's a go either way call. But the immediate, it wasn't the player, it's the refs.
Starting point is 00:47:22 So I think that's here to stay. These are not great teams. Yukon's the best, I think, by a notch. And I said this last week. I said, Yukon's going to beat Gonzagga. Yukon, I think,'s the best team in this thing. They're kind of working team. They're getting ahead of teams fast.
Starting point is 00:47:39 They just, I mean, good coaching. They have a dominant big. They have a lot of depth. I mean, Yukon's really a good basketball team. Really good. They're not great. They're not the Christian Leitner, Bobby Hurley, Grant Hill team. They're not a Georgetown championship team.
Starting point is 00:47:52 It's not like they have worthy in Jordan when North Carolina. These teams are not great. The two sports in my life that have gotten worse, boxing, there's too many other ways to make money. Boxing divisions aren't nearly as good as they used to be. There's just too many ways to make money without getting your headbeat in. And the second thing is college basketball. where guys like Ewing and Tim Duncan would come back for three and four years.
Starting point is 00:48:13 Now, if you're good, you're out. So these teams are not good enough to overcome mistakes and miss free throws. They're just not. They're all pretty good. They're pretty good. And there you go. Colin right, calling wrong, top of next hour. JMAX just bummed out.
Starting point is 00:48:31 You did lose some money. Well, on Creighton futures. But it actually, this is crazy. I want a bracket pool because everybody's eliminated. and nobody has any final four teams, a small pool, thanks to that Texas loss. One guy had a chance to beat me. So I'll take the win, but I just like good basketball. I like more basketball.
Starting point is 00:48:48 Well, I watched the San Diego. I thought the San Diego State game was a good game. I mean, push the guy to the floor. 56, 57 or whatever. Well, I mean, no, no. I mean, listen, there's a lot of tournament games in the high 50s, low 60s. Another podcast from some SNL late night comedy guy, not quite. Unhumor me with Robert Smygel and friends.
Starting point is 00:49:05 Me and hilarious guests from Bob Odenkirk to David Letterman, help make you funnier. This week, my guest, SNL's Mikey Day and head writer, Streeter Seidel, help an a cappella band with their between songs banter. Where does your group perform? We do some retirement homes.
Starting point is 00:49:21 Those people are starving for banter. Listen to humor me with Robert Smigel and friends on the I-Heart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.
