Starting point is 00:00:00 This is an I-Heart podcast. Guaranteed Human. Another podcast from some SNL, late-night comedy guy, not quite. Unhumor me with Robert Smygel and friends. Me and hilarious guests from Bob Odenkirk to David Letterman help make you funnier. This week, my guest, SNL's Mikey Day and head writer, Streeter Seidel, help an a cappella band with their between songs banter. Where does your group perform?
Starting point is 00:00:24 We do some retirement homes. Those people are starving for banter. Listen to humor me with Robert Smigel and friends on the I Heart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. On The Look Back at it podcast. From 1979, that was a big moment for me. 84 was big to me. I'm Sam Jay.
Starting point is 00:00:40 And I'm Alex English. Each episode, we pick a year, unpack what went down, and try to make sense of how we survived it. With our friends, fellow comedians, and favorite authors. Like Mark Lamont Hill on the 80s. 84 was a wild year. It was a wild year. I don't think there's a more important year for black people. Listen to look back at it on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.
Starting point is 00:01:05 Imagine an Olympics where doping is not only legal but encouraged. It's the enhanced games. Some call it grotesque. Others say it's unleashing human potential. Either way, the podcast's Superhuman documented it all, embedded in the games and with the athletes for a full year. Within probably 10 days, I'd put on 10 pounds. I was having trouble stopping the muscle growth. Listen to Superhuman on the I-Heart Radio app,
Starting point is 00:01:31 Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Thanks for listening to The Heard Podcast. Be sure to catch us live every weekday on Fox Sports Radio in noon to 3 Eastern, 9 a.m. to noon Pacific. Find your local station for the herd at Fox SportsRedio.com or stream us live every day on the IHeartRadio app by searching Fox Sports Radio or FSR. Now let's get this party started.
Starting point is 00:01:56 You're listening to Fox Sports Radio. Here we go on a Wednesday. A lot of stuff happening live in Los Angeles. It's the herd, wherever you may be, and however you may be listening. Thanks for making us part of your day. One hour from now, Joel Clatt, huge college football weekend. USC Notre Dame. Are the Trojans of fraud?
Starting point is 00:02:21 They go to South Bend. It's going to be wet, rainy Midwest weather. this is what they're going to face in the big 10. What's it going to look like for USC this weekend? And the number one pick, Caleb Williams, Joel Gladden, one hour. You know, I was thinking about this. You have partial ownership of a soccer team. The best kind of owner is you're passionate, you have deep pockets,
Starting point is 00:02:45 you don't meddle, but you are watching what's going on. You're paying attention. It's difficult to not want to meddle. I'll just say that, yes. Very difficult. Okay. So Jerry Jones has always been a meddler. Jimmy Johnson told me the first few years when he bought the team and he was trying to make
Starting point is 00:03:04 money, he didn't see Jerry in the football side. And then Jerry got the money right. Jimmy started winning games. Then Jerry, you played college football, wanted to suddenly, you know, think of himself as a GM and a coach. He still does. But he never thought of himself as a fan, right? He was never a fan.
Starting point is 00:03:22 He was talking yesterday on Dallas Radio, and this is about a 20-second bite. There's a part of it initially. He's asked about making changes, coordinator, coach, quarterback, here's Jerry Jones. One of the first things that I asked myself in any situation, can we do some things different than we did against the 49ers? We certainly can make adjustments and we'll make those adjustments. We should recognize that we had a very bad outy, and San Francisco had a very good outy. We should recognize that, and call it what it is, and not mislead ourselves. But as far as sitting here saying that we should completely change out the tiles here,
Starting point is 00:04:10 that's not even in the cards. And it's really ridiculous. That's what fans say. Hey, we just had a bad game, and they had a good game. Now, San Francisco's got way better players. You got about three guys that could start for them. And the other thing about, well, well, we could play better the next time. That's what fans always say.
Starting point is 00:04:30 Like, their team's the only team that can improve. You don't think San Francisco, Brock Purdy's not going to get better? All these starts meets Dallas again in the playoffs. That sounds like a fan. They just played really well and we didn't. It was more than that. Well, we have a lot of areas to improve in. Shanahan's better than McCarthy.
Starting point is 00:04:51 the better CEO, the better football coach has a greater opportunity to improve than an average football coach. That's what a fan says. Listen, there are disturbing signs now. When you get to week five and six, you start seeing data and the truth comes out. Here are several concerns right now with Dallas. Number one, Dak Prescott. The numbers are out.
Starting point is 00:05:10 I won't bore the radio audience. It's too tedious to read all of them. Dak is pretty good in the first quarter. Goes downhill until he's awful in the fourth quarter. He gets worse every quarter. So, Dak, like most veteran quarterbacks, is good on script. Then it gets ugly by the second half. Now, is that on Mike McCarthy's play calling?
Starting point is 00:05:35 So Dallas is pretty good on the element of surprise. But once the surprise is done and it comes down to your playmakers and my playmakers, Dallas doesn't have enough because they pay Dak too much money. So that's a real concern. DAC is getting significantly worse as the game goes on. Here's the other thing that has become crystal clear. Justin Herbert, with a new coordinator, Kellyn Moore, has massively upgraded in the second half.
Starting point is 00:06:07 Uh-oh. So Herbert's best quarter is Dak's worse, the fourth. So the Chargers, this isn't difficult. The Chargers now are a top five red zone team with Kellynne Moore without Austin Eckler. Their chest piece. Not good. So in review, Dak Prescott, worst quarter now the fourth and getting worse in the red zone this year. Lost Kellynne Moore.
Starting point is 00:06:44 Justin Herbert gained Kellynne Moore, the sharp young coordinator, his second halfs skyrocketing, his fourth quarter is his best quarter and his red zone without his chestpiece, Austin Echler, top five in the league. Not complicated, folks. Not complicated. This would be like a baseball team saying, we hit a lot more home runs last year than this year, and our rival hits more home runs this year than last year because you traded them your cleanup hitter.
Starting point is 00:07:15 It wouldn't be hard to figure out if his baseball. Why aren't we hitting as many home runs? Well, Aaron Judge left. You know, it's one of those. Kellynne Moore leaves Dallas. They're now a terrible red zone team and a terrible fourth quarter team. Kellynne Moore goes to the Chargers. They're now a great second half offense, a great fourth quarter team, and a great red zone team.
Starting point is 00:07:35 A plus B equals C. This is not calculus. Of all the NFL dilemmas of all the teams, this is the easy one. And again, we know this to be true. the more you pay the quarterback, you sort of have to live with what you have weapons-wise now. The other thing that's pretty clear and it's happening in football, and I think all of you would acknowledge this, football's different now than 10 years ago. Creative wins, a creative quarterback, like a Josh Allen Lamar Jackson,
Starting point is 00:08:04 a creative offensive coordinator or a creative coach. Let me give you teams eye view as creative. Baltimore, Detroit, Miami, Kansas City, Philly, San Francisco, the Jags. You know what I don't consider Mike McCarthy and Dak? Creative. I said this last week. They're dull. The Cowboys are boring in offense.
Starting point is 00:08:27 I was reading The Ringer. Stephen Ruiz wrote an article, and he judges quarterbacks on several categories. And Dak does pretty well in a lot of categories. You know, his biggest weakness? Creativity. So this is a really easy one. And Jerry, who was always a big.
Starting point is 00:08:46 businessman. And after he started succeeding with the money with the Cowboys, moved into GM and football guy, meddler, but he cared deeply. We never considered him a fan. Jerry's now a fan. Well, they just played well and we didn't. Oh, okay. Wouldn't be a coach issue. Wouldn't be a, wouldn't be a Kellynne Moore issue? Wouldn't be a paid act too much issue? No, it's just, just you didn't play well. They played well. I don't know, folks. that's not good. Your owner can be a meddler. By the way, there are successful owners that meddles.
Starting point is 00:09:23 Steve Balmer is right on top of the clippers. I mean, you know, there are owners out there that I like a lot. They're right on top of their team. Can't be a fan. Can't be a fan boy. Well, we'll get him next time. We'll play better. Other teams play better too.
Starting point is 00:09:41 All right. I saw this story. Aaron Rogers yesterday preaching patience to the Green Bay Packers with George. and love. It's always easier, by the way, to preach patience in somebody else's building. You ever notice that? It's always easy. Your company's crushing. You go, you know, their company needs to be patient. But Aaron Rogers said this. And I like patience. You should have it when you raise children or teach somebody how to play piano. But Aaron Rogers said, there's going to be growing pains. I had growing pains my first year starting. We all go through
Starting point is 00:10:12 it. Going to be fine. Great kid. Good young man. Take some deep breaths. Trust the kid. great kid cares about it, going to be around for a while, they're going to get it fixed. Yeah, yeah. Patience is one of those things that sounds great and is useful occasionally, mostly with children. It gets people fired in the NFL, right? Can't be too patient. Let me give you an example.
Starting point is 00:10:34 Detroit, I have lauded this year for being patient. The Lions had a plan, drafted, developed, implemented it, and now for the third straight year, we're seeing it work. But that's different. They implemented a plan. They saw it work. And then they added to their plan. It worked even greater.
Starting point is 00:10:56 They added again to it. Now we're watching this year. They're even better. That's different. Jordan Love's been there now four years. They're still coaching like they're terrified to let them go back and throw. By the way, Houston was C.J. Stroud, rookie, missing four offensive linemen. They don't coach scared.
Starting point is 00:11:14 Anthony Richardson Colts. He only started one year in college. football. They don't coach scared. James Jones was on the show yesterday. Green Bay looks terrified to cut it loose with Jordan Love. Eventually you got to find out. Eventually you just got to let these young boys go. I coach little kids too and sometimes I'm out there coaching and I do what coastal floor did last night and what the Pittsburgh stills are doing trying to call it safe and then I'm like, you know what, forget it. And I'm like, damn, my kids can handle it. You know how my young quarterbacks can handle it.
Starting point is 00:11:47 So eventually you got to let these young players go. You got to let these young quarterbacks go and just, they just got to go out there and they got to go through the ups and the downs. By the way, if there's a lot of downs, you know it's time to move off them. So here's something to consider. There's a term in business called seeing around corners. Can you see problems before they're on top of your lap? It's the best college quarterback draft class ever.
Starting point is 00:12:10 And the bottom of the NFC is worse than the bottom of the AFC. So many of these Drake Mays, Caleb Williams, Michael Pennix, they're going to go to Chicago in Minnesota and Washington and Atlanta, maybe in Tampa, your conference. This is what happened five years ago roughly in the AFC, when the AFC bottom was awful. And then Buffalo drafted a quarterback. And so did Kansas City in Cincinnati and Baltimore and the Jags and the Chargers. They all got young stars. And you know the franchise that was patient.
Starting point is 00:12:44 Pittsburgh, Big Ben. They wouldn't draft quarterbacks. Drafted one, Big Ben, got a little prickly. They stopped. How's that patience working out? Name your last big playoff win. So the AFC had a really bad bottom. They all started drafting quarterbacks
Starting point is 00:13:01 and about six teams hit on them. That's why Russell Wilson and the AFC doesn't look like a top 10 guy. That's why Aaron Rogers now going to be 40 in the AFC. There's no guarantee he's going to do anything. in the AFC. They weren't patient. Teams moved off people.
Starting point is 00:13:19 Kansas City had Alex Smith. They were going to the playoffs. Screw patience. Let's go get Mahomes. Wild. Not even a winning record. Sidearm thrower. Kansas City could have been patient with Alex Smith.
Starting point is 00:13:32 They weren't. They went for it. I mean, Tyrod Taylor, Buffalo got to the playoffs. They won't get me patient. So patient sounds great. New England didn't sense the urgency. Didn't trade up. we'll just wait for Mac Jones.
Starting point is 00:13:45 It's not working. By the way, the Bears in six months could draft Caleb Williams. And we talked about this yesterday. The Vikings in six months could have Drake May. Going to go into year five, would Jordan Love be patient? Patient is great when you're teaching somebody how to drive or play the piano. It can be really overrated in football. Everybody gets four-year contracts, and by the middle of year or two, if you're not winning, you get fired.
Starting point is 00:14:12 that's pro sports, they're standings. There's winners and losers and you're a bum. I'm watching the David Beckham Netflix documentary. You see him as iconic and a legend in England. Halfway through his career, 22, 23 years old, he was hated. Death threats. Kidnapping threats for his kids. Sports fans aren't patient.
Starting point is 00:14:36 Owners listen to sports fans on radio and TV. They're not patient. Right? even icons, MJ, a struggle. David Beckham, a struggle. Far Rogers had their struggles. It's just really easy in another building to go just be patient. The NFC, go look at the draft order right now.
Starting point is 00:14:54 The top of that draft is a lot of NFC teams, and this is a great college quarterback draft class. Caleb Williams and Drake May could be in your division. Forget conference, your division in six months. Be careful about patience. J. Mack, I'm firing today. day. Joel Clatt in one hour. Yeah, patience. I like that little spiel you did there. Would you could, we're both very similar, born in January, Capricorns, as they say.
Starting point is 00:15:22 Patience has been one of my weaknesses throughout my absolute weakness. There's no question. But again, I've been burned by it before, but not that often. Like if you feel something, you see something, do something. You know, there's the old saying instead of right and wrong, either you're right or you're learning. Like so I'd rather make, yeah, I'd rather make mistakes and learn than sit and wait. Forget right wrong. You're right or you're learning. So make moves. Take chances. You'll figure out that doesn't work. I talked about this yesterday. Norman Schwartzcoff, like the four or five star general, talked about that in military. He said, sometimes you have to do things. So there's no ambiguity. What can't we do? It's painful. But it's, you have to figure out in light. When you
Starting point is 00:16:08 take swings, you realize what doesn't work and not just think about. Like, you can sit back for, I mean, when Brady was in his prime every other year, Belichick drafted a quarterback. This idea about patience, what does that mean? Brett Farve, two practices in, you're like, wow. Aaron Rogers, first year, read Jeff Perlman's book. First year, people were like, wow, we're four years in. I got people telling me in the offseason, there's no juice.
Starting point is 00:16:36 C.J. Stroud's first game. Whoa, Anthony Richardson's first half. Whoa, Burrell, Herbert, Allen. If you don't see wow early, I remember when Mahomes went to Kansas City and they had Alex Smith Pro Bowl making the playoffs. And Peter Schrager got a piece of video. Schroger texted me and he's like, Mahomes is insane. It was like five days into practice.
Starting point is 00:17:00 And he's like had video. He's like, it's unbelievable. I'm not waiting four years to see if you can throw a deep ball accurately. I said, I'll give them to Thanksgiving. We're not even to Thanksgiving, and I'm like, I don't know. So let me give you two teams. Are you patient with them or are you at some point drafting a quarterback? Number one, Miami Dolphins.
Starting point is 00:17:17 They just signed Mike White in the offseason. They got Tua. No, I think you have to just let Tua play out for two years because you paid them for two years. Let it play out. That doesn't mean I won't draft a quarterback in the fourth round. Not my first. Right, right. But I think Miami, I'm going to roll with Tua.
Starting point is 00:17:32 I'm going to probably draft a quarterback in the third, fourth round. And then the New York Jets. We don't know. By the time the draft is here, we don't know what Aaron. Roger's situation. My takeaway is if Zach, if this is the new Zach, I can go for a year with Aaron and Zach as a backup. I'm good with that for a year. They also have a left tackle to solve. They need more weapons on the outside to solve. So they got some, now again, fifth round, sure, I'll take a quarterback. But I mean, if Aaron comes back, he will, I imagine. And he's 90%
Starting point is 00:18:01 of what he would have been at he not been hurt. And Zach's your backup. I mean, Zach just won just won a game in Denver? Zach went toe to toe to Kansas City. You can win games. Just remember Aaron Rogers went into the darkness retreat basically retired.
Starting point is 00:18:16 Remember he came out and said that? But in fairness to Aaron and I've been critical of Aaron. People change. People do have these moments and epiphanies. And I do think Aaron, New York has revitalized him.
Starting point is 00:18:28 Great energy. Cool guy. Good looking in the city. I think Aaron's having the time of his life outside of the injury. So I mean, you know, sometimes you're in a small, town and you think this is it and all of a sudden you move, your wife gets a job, you end up in a
Starting point is 00:18:40 bigger city and you're like, you know what, I got a newfound energy. I got some juice now. I worry about Aaron, though. It doesn't have football. Now he's going, talking to a punter and trying to pick fights with Mr. Pfizer, Travis Kelsey. Bro, what are you doing, Roger? Come on. Well, that's part of his personality. Not everybody's the same. I have a great parlay for you this weekend, thanks to Drafking Sportsbook. New users. Use the code heard. H-E-R-D when you download the app. Here's my parlay. I'll take the Jags at home minus 4 to win and cover against the Colts, who are going with a backup quarterback. Colts out played them in week one. Jags will not overlook Indy, Jags minus 4. Seahks at the Bengals, Cincinnati found their groove. This game is urgent.
Starting point is 00:19:24 They're in a very tough division. Every game matters now after a rocky start. I'll take the Bengals minus 3 to cover. And the commanders with extra prep off a blowout loss, Amiliated get points, two and a half at Atlanta. Atlanta beat Houston. I don't think they're better than Houston. They just beat them. I'm going to take the commanders plus two and a half. If you want to take the Hurd, Parlay.

Or when Kanye said that George Bush didn't like black people. I know what you're thinking. What the hell does George Bush got to do with Little Kim? Well, you can find out on the Look Back at it podcast. I'm Sam J. And I'm Alex English.
Starting point is 00:21:56 Each episode, we pick it here, unpack what went down, and try to make sense of how we survived it. including a recent episode with Mark Lamont Hill waxing all about crack in the 80s. To be clear, 84 is big to me not just because of crack. I'm down to talk about crack all day, but just so y'all know. I mean, at this point, Mark, this is the second episode where we've discussed crack, so I'm starting to see that there's a through line. We also have AIDS on the table right now, so...
Starting point is 00:22:22 Thank you finishing that sentence. Yes, I don't think there's a more important year for black people. Really? Yeah. For me, it's one of the most important years. for black people in American history. Listen to look back at it on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.
Starting point is 00:22:39 Oh, it's great to have you in today. A lot of stuff going on. Every year this comes out, we always think it's fun. It's the 2023-20204 NBA general manager survey. Not always right, but always interesting. So one of the questions, which team will win the NBA finals? I, Boston, Denver, Milwaukee, 23%, Boston, and the Nuggets are 33%. That feels about right.
Starting point is 00:23:08 Milwaukee, 23%, Phoenix at 7%. I'd probably nudge them up a little higher, Clippers at 3. I don't see that, but whatever. But I think the other question they had is if you were starting a franchise today and you could sign any player, who would it be? Now, this is where it gets interesting. Yokage, 33%, Victor Wenamma, 23%, Yoneman. minus 13%. Those are the three I would go with.
Starting point is 00:23:31 Luca, as I've said before, we don't know if he's a good teammate, a complete defensive liability, hot temper. He's in my top four, but he's probably three or four. Anthony Edwards, kind of interesting to me, but here's what's interesting. Jason Tatum's not in it, and he's just in the getting a few votes category. So we know he didn't get 7%. He probably got less than 5%. The Boston Celtics did the opposite of the Packers, and they did it with a star player.
Starting point is 00:23:58 Jordan loves not close to a star. The Boston Celtics were honest with themselves. Jason Tatum needs help. They got him Porzingis Drew Holiday. It's the right move. But Jason Tatum, big games, fourth quarter, playoff games. You mostly get a star. About 30% of the time you don't.
Starting point is 00:24:21 The Celtics admitted everything is not okay. We're watching it now. Three and four years. It's not okay. By the way, the Milwaukee Bucks would not admit this until Janus the star said, Get me, Damer, I'm out. Janus, the star, not the owner in the front office, admitted the truth. Chris Middleton's not good enough.
Starting point is 00:24:43 I love Drew Holiday. We need a superstar in the fourth. Somebody in the organization. In Milwaukee, it was the star. It's often the GM, the coach, the owner. Now, the Packers don't have an owner, and it's a very friendly small market media. so they tend to be more patient than other franchises. The 76ers for years were lying to themselves.
Starting point is 00:25:04 Joel Embed, we don't even notice those injuries. Ben Simmons will learn how to shoot. And then Darry came in and said, no, Ben Simmons can't shoot. He's indifferent, doesn't really love the game, and Embed gets hurt a lot. We got to make changes. Somebody in an organization, this is where Boston deserves credit. They admitted the truth with a star.
Starting point is 00:25:25 Jason Tatum's a top 7-8. player in the league. I got him closer to eight than one, but he's a great player. But over the last couple years, I kept saying, got to move off Marcus Smart. He's not enough offense. You've got to upgrade that. Can't just be Jason Tatum and if he's not hitting Jalen Brown,
Starting point is 00:25:41 who's your third? Markets smart's more of a defensive player. Robert Williams is all defense. Brogden's a bench guy. So I love what Boston did, but it all starts with the reality. Yonis had to do it for Milwaukee. Middleton, Brooke Lopez. Guys, this ain't it
Starting point is 00:25:56 we got we got to get a a Steph Curry out here they got dame good stuff J-Mac with the news turn on the news this is the herd line news for NBA season
Starting point is 00:26:11 oh I think we look at it first NBA little topic he does and he takes a dig at my guy Tatum I like him too you have him top two I have him somewhere seven or eight he's top five 100% but you know as you were saying
Starting point is 00:26:24 guys everyone needs help Help, right? Everybody does need help. Janice, remember his playoff failures, and then they get Drew Holiday and he wins a title. Okay. Magic, did he win a title without Jabbar? What did Jordan win without Scotty Pippen? Everywhere LeBron goes, he gets help. Nobody wins alone. By the way, Yokic last year. He was awesome back to back years. Jamal Murray was out two. Jamal Murray was out. Listen, it's hard for virtually everybody. Mahomes is such an outlier where he inherits a great GM and a great coach. And by year two, you're looking at Super Bowl opportunities. Even for Magic, there was. was a point they called him tragic. Yeah. Okay. Larry Bird, it's going to be smooth sailing, except he has to get through magic. Right? Like, so Michael Jordan couldn't get along with his owner and GM.
Starting point is 00:27:05 Like, when you watch that Jordan documentary, he was the best player, the best looking player, the most style. It's the most popular, the best defender, best late game. It was hard. He had to retire twice. So it's like the reality is this winning championships, Mahomes is like, I'm in the league, I got everything I need, let's go. That is so.
Starting point is 00:27:21 Tyreeke, Travis Kellogg. They're so good they can move off Tyreek. that's not the way it works. It's never linear. Trees don't grow to the sky. It's always up. It's down. And I think Boston's realizing they came full circle on this.
Starting point is 00:27:34 It's like Jason's going to be, he needs help. And that's okay. All right, let's start with Brock Purdy. Boy, this guy, unbelievable. Niners 5'0 Super Bowl favorites now. He had the four touchdown Sunday against the Cowboys in a bloodbath. Kyle Shanahan pointed to Purdy's consistency. as what has impressed him the most over the quarterback's first 10 starts.
Starting point is 00:27:58 I mean, just the consistency. He does it all the time, but just to continue doing it at such a high rate has been pretty unbelievable, just how good he's been, how many plays he's made, and how many plays he hasn't made for the other team. So, yeah, the consistency of that has been what's been impressive the most. For the record, he's not 100% healthy, according to one of our guests earlier this week. He's playing about 90%. Elbow is not completely back and healed and strong.
Starting point is 00:28:23 That's what somebody earlier on the week said. Colin, this is staggering. I just went through his career arc and tallied it since he became like the starter of the guy. 25 touchdowns, three interceptions. He doesn't make mistakes. He plays clean. Dak had three Sunday night. Purdy has three in the NFL.
Starting point is 00:28:44 This guy's amazing. Now, here's the interesting thing. Do you want to guess in all his games where he's been playing? How many minutes he's trailed in the fourth quarter? Well, he got hurt against Philadelphia, so that doesn't count. Yeah, that doesn't count. He was out. Eight.
Starting point is 00:29:02 Less, two and a half minutes. And it was against the Raiders last year in the crazy Stidham game. They trailed like at the beginning of the fourth quarter. He's never had like an adversity moment where it's like, Brock, get out there. We need the game winning drive. That's right. He hasn't had that. They credit him with a game winning drive in that game.
Starting point is 00:29:16 But the Raiders turned it over and it was like two yards. Robbie Goal kicked a field goal. So that's the only thing we have yet to see for Purdy. Well, that's a big thing. There's a big difference between, look at DAC this year, playing with a lead and playing from behind, it's two different quarterbacks. So playing from behind, Baker Mayfield with a lead in a run game, looked like a franchise quarterback.
Starting point is 00:29:33 Playing from behind without a run game, look like a backup. Like, it changes the way we think about you. It will. Maybe he'll have to play from behind this week. Next story is his opponent is the Cleveland Browns. They've got a quarterback situation. Colin, this is unbelievable. PJ Walker is being rumored as the starting quarterback for the Browns this week against the Niners.
Starting point is 00:29:51 By the way, congratulations to anybody that bet the Niners on Monday or Tuesday. Because the line now is going to go up to like nine probably. Well, it's up to six now. They don't know about Deshawn Watson. And this, I'm the idiot who bet, obviously, Cleveland thinking, oh, money's, everybody's going to bet the Niners. I got the Browns. And now I don't know if not Watson's starting. Colin, like, DTR was so bad.
Starting point is 00:30:11 You can't run him out there. The Niners will annihilate. DTR looked great in the preseason. He did. Be very careful. Jordan Love looked great in the preseason. Be very careful about the preseason. So I know you're not a doctor.
Starting point is 00:30:22 I need to ask you, if you're medically cleared two. weeks ago to plan a game. And now you're not practicing? What is going on in Cleveland? I need something. Somebody's got to feed me. I have no idea what's going on. It's just troubling. Deshawn Watson, fully guaranteed contract. I have no comp. I've never heard of it. I've never heard of a, now I've, there's other guys, a running back maybe clear to play. And he's like, hey, guys, it hurts. Like running backs take a real beating. I would get a running back clear to play, especially in the 70s and 80s and 90s and saying, guys, I'm not. I'm not right.
Starting point is 00:30:57 Quarterbacks, you don't get hit at practice. You got to play. This was supposed to be the week the Niners maybe stub their toe coming off the big Niners win over the Cowboys. Colin, if they destroy Cleveland, Watson doesn't play. You start looking and I think Monday we're going to be talking about like undefeated Niners, like 10 and 0, 12-0. I think we're talking about that now.
Starting point is 00:31:17 I think it's in play. Look at the schedule. Like, they're stacked. This team's loaded. Final story, Penn State. Let's go to college football. football, enters the seventh week of college football, ranked number six in the nation, 5 and 0. James Franklin is known for his meticulous preparation, but didn't seem ready for a reporter
Starting point is 00:31:36 asking if the team should take more 50-50 deep shots downfield. I heard this. Like, I'm like, my skin is curling when you say, just drop back and chuck it deep no matter what. Like, that is like, I don't even know what you're saying. Like you're speaking Japanese. Like, we have never done that. Just throw the ball up and maybe he'll be open and maybe he'll catch. Like my skin is like, like, you're making me uncomfortable. Like I don't know what you're talking about.
Starting point is 00:32:12 So, yeah, we would not do that. We would never do that. So no, no. Strong no. Well, yeah, they have a good quarterback too, who will be the number one pick. not this draft, the next draft. Boy, he's that good.
Starting point is 00:32:26 He's good. You're going to be a top five guy. Quarterback's more valuable. Watch him potentially as a top pick in the draft. He's really good. He's really good. You know, James Franklin's fight. James started in Vanderbilt, and Vanderbilt's academic power,
Starting point is 00:32:38 not a very good football program, won some games. Yeah. And then I went to Penn State, great recruiter. And as I've watched Penn State, I always thought Franklin was high-energy, great recruiter. I think he's a better coach than people give him credit for. And you've heard that before. John Calapari always gets this reputation.
Starting point is 00:32:54 John can, he can recruit. Well, a lot of the coaches I talk to, John can coach. All right. It's just he's a better recruiter, maybe, but he can coach. Franklin had the Calipari rep. He can recruit, coach. I watch Penn State play. They look well coached to me.
Starting point is 00:33:08 Well. And for the record, he's moved through some coordinators. Like, he's had some instability in the coordinator and assistant coach ranks. I'll just say, Colin. I don't want Clack to get upset at me. I don't want you to get them. Here's who they've played. Okay.
Starting point is 00:33:22 West Virginia, Delaware, Illinois, Iowa, Northwestern. Who do they play next? UMass. Okay, then who do they play after that? That's the game. Okay, can we just reserve judgment on Penn State until they go to Columbus? I think Ohio State's the third best team in the Big Ten. I think Michigan is easily the best team.
Starting point is 00:33:39 I think Penn State's second. And I think Ohio State's third. I'll say this. In the Pack 12, I think Oregon or Washington of the top two teams, USC is third. So I mean, the USC's defense, we now have a reality, not a trend. They don't tackle. They create pressure. They can't tackle on the back end.
Starting point is 00:33:59 They're not great. Too many openings, not good in the back end. That's who they are. Ohio State Online. It's not great. It's not getting much better. But they played a good team on the road. Like, we know what Ohio State is.
Starting point is 00:34:10 I think you have to come to terms with it. Y'all love Ryan Day and I like him too. Okay. But they struggled to put away a Notre Dame team. I'll make my prediction. Notre Dame's going to end up with a few losses. That's not a good Notre Dame team. Notre Dame lost this past weekend.
Starting point is 00:34:23 They were looking ahead to this U.S.C. Notre Dame's going to have like four losses. So was USC. Do you want to guess the Ohio State-Pen State line? You know, they do games in the season. Where's the game at? Ohio State. Ohio State's probably favored by one, but I think Penn State should be favored by four. What is it?
Starting point is 00:34:40 Wow. I'm seeing five and a half Ohio State here on. There's no way. I take Penn State every day twice on Sunday. I get five points with Penn State. I'm seeing it on covers. a website called covers minus five and a half. They released them in the summer.
Starting point is 00:34:53 The game's still two weeks away. You know, something could happen this weekend. Penn State today is a better football team than Ohio State. Michigan's better than both. I'll go ahead and take the Buckeyes in that one. We'll go ahead to head. How many bets in a roll if I won? What are you talking about?
Starting point is 00:35:04 Raiders Packers? I did give out the Packers teaser. I don't know if that counts. Not really. Jay Mack with the news. Well, that's the news. And thanks for stopping by. The Herd Lie News.
Starting point is 00:35:17 So we were thinking about that. We were talking about this this morning. And so Shanahan says, oh, yeah, Purdy's unbelievable. No, there's something unbelievable about the 49ers, more so than I think everybody understands. Wait until you get a load of this next. Be sure to catch live editions of the herd weekdays in noon Eastern 9 a.m. Pacific. On Fox Sports Radio, FS1, and the IHeart Radio app.

Listen to Superhuman on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. A win is a win. A win is a win. I don't care what you'll say. Yep, that's me, Clifford Taylor the 4th.

Do you remember when Diana Ross double-tapped Little Kim's boobs at the VMAs? Or when Kanye said that George Bush didn't like black people.
Starting point is 00:37:52 I know what you're thinking. What the hell does George Bush got to do with Little Kim? Well, you can find out on the Look Back at it podcast. I'm Sam Jett. And I'm Alex English. Each episode, we pick a here, unpack what went down, and try to make sense of how we survived it. Including a recent episode with Mark Lamont Hill, waxing all about crack in the 80s. To be clear, 84 is big to me, not just because.
Starting point is 00:38:14 of crack. I'm down to talk about crack on day, but just so y'all know. I mean, at this point, Mark, this is the second episode where we've discussed crack. So I'm starting to see that there's a through line. We also have AIDS on the table right now. Thank you for finishing that sentence. Yes. I don't think there's a more important year for black people.
Starting point is 00:38:34 Really? Yeah. For me, it's one of the most important years for black people in American history. Listen to look back at it on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your Tonight it's game four of the ALDS as the Astros look to punch their ticket to the next round while the twins fight to keep their playoff hopes alive. It all starts at 630 Eastern only on MS. So I was thinking about the Niners this morning. And we again, as J-Mack said, Brock Purdy's barely even trailed in a football game.
Starting point is 00:39:11 We don't have any tarmac here. We don't know what he is. I think he's good. I don't even know if he's pretty good. I don't know if he's very good. I doubt he's very good. He's good. Kirk Cousins is good.
Starting point is 00:39:23 He could just be that. That's good. You know, your top 15 in the league. Jared Goff's, to me, very good. Mahomes is great. Justin Herbert's great. So what's really remarkable, and it's so hard to do this, you need like four or five things to go your way,
Starting point is 00:39:40 one of them being find a quarterback in the draft that you don't have to pay for four years. So San Francisco, this morning, I said, and nobody's close in the league. Philadelphia, semi-close. San Francisco's top 10 players. Think about this. I'm going in what I perceive to be the order, but Christian McCaffrey number one, Trent Williams, number two, Fred Warner, three, Nick Bosa, four, George Kittle, five.
Starting point is 00:40:06 Those are Hall of Fame level players. Now, McCaffrey may not make it. If he stays three more years in these numbers, he may. But Trent's a Hall of Famer. Fred is, Bosa is, Kittle it. Those are Hall of Famers. The next four guys are Pro Bowl level players. Debo Samuel, Brandon Ayuk has exploded, Funga the safety,
Starting point is 00:40:26 Javon Hargrave, who's a top four or five deep tackle in the league. And then your 10th player, Various Ward, if there's 160 corners in the NFL and rosters, he's like 14th, 15th, or 60. That's your 10th best player. You know who I didn't mention? The quarterback with the highest passer rating in league history. and the best schematic offensive coach, along with Andy Reid, in the league. So they should win the Super Bowl.
Starting point is 00:40:52 They should win the Super Bowl. When they played Dallas, my takeaway was, Zach Martin would start for the Niners. Micah Parsons would start for the Niners. Would C.D. Lamb? I mean, Brandon and I, you can C.D. Lamb. I don't see a big gap. I think they're both really, really good.
Starting point is 00:41:11 But they're not getting rid of Debo because he's a running back and receiver. And you know as a chess piece, Shanahan loves that. This team's insanely stacked. They're the number one, according to PFF. The Niners are the top wide receiver-graded team in the league, defensive grade, pass-rush grade, second in coverage. I mean, and they just keep losing great assistant coaches. Demico Ryan's Robert Sala. That doesn't matter.
Starting point is 00:41:36 I don't think they're quite as good defensively in the red zone this year could get better. But the only team I could think of that even compared was going back to the Seattle Seahawks in 1314 when they had Marshawn Lynch, Russell Wilson, Cam Chandler, Richard Sherman, Earl Thomas, Bobby Wagner. Max Unger was about the ninth best player and he was a Pro Bowl center. They moved off him inexplicably. I thought that cost them for years.
Starting point is 00:42:02 But Max Unger, you know, like a Hargrave, was like a Pro Bowl center. And he was like the ninth best player on the team. but Seattle also had, like San Francisco, a very cheap quarterback so they could take big swings on a Christian McCaffrey. You can do that. I said, even if you took as much as everybody likes certain quarterbacks, if you had a, if this team had a really, really good quarterback, Justin Herbert, with what they're going to pay him now, you could not have Christian McCaffrey and you could not have Fred Warner and you wouldn't go get Hargrave. That's three, that's great players.
Starting point is 00:42:37 You could have Trent Williams. You could have Debo and Iyuk. You know, you could have the second linebacker. You could have Hufunga. You could have a Bosa. But you couldn't have gotten taken a swing on McCaffrey. You couldn't keep both those linebackers. You'd probably have to let Fred Warner go.
Starting point is 00:42:54 And you couldn't go get with a Bosa Hargrave because you have Armstead. So this roster is you just don't see it much. You have to hit on draft picks. You have to hit on a quarterback who's really special and you don't pay them anything for four years. It just doesn't happen very often. That Seattle team, remember watching that Seattle team, and Peyton Manning goes to a Super Bowl and literally Payton Manning, games over in six minutes. Peyton Manning very rarely in his career was engulfed, had no shot. That Super Bowl was over, six snaps in. That's what Dallas was. Dallas can't even compete. Don't even have the same level
Starting point is 00:43:31 of players. So when Jerry Jones says, we just had a bad game. No, compared to San Francisco, you have a bad roster. That's not a bad game. Now, I'm not saying it's 42 to 10 if they met again. But they're going to meet again. It would be in San Francisco, barring an injury to Brock Purdy. They would meet again in San Francisco or Santa Clara in a playoff game. It may not be 4210, but get used to 3017.
Starting point is 00:43:55 Here's the other thing. We started talking about this yesterday. Bill Belichick, Joel Clatopper next hour, Belichick said after the, the ugly loss. We've got to make some changes. Well, he is now saying, we're not going to do that. Yeah, we're not making any changes. You used the phrase starting over. Last time we spoke with, what has that specifically entailed the last few days? Yeah, so what I just said? Fundamentals, things that'll help us play better. Fundamentals. Well, you can put new tires on an old car. It's still an
Starting point is 00:44:38 car. They don't have enough players. So this tsunami's been coming for five or six years. You can go back to Tom Brady's last year, like 2019 when he was yelling. Cameras caught him on the sideline at receivers. Get open. Could any of you guys get open? And the answer was, no, they couldn't. One of the real frustrations with Brady, he didn't have more control over the offense, and he looked around at Mahalms, and he was looking around at Big Ben, and he was looking around at all these quarterbacks and saying, they got players, and I don't. So, I mean, listen, they drafted Nikiel Harry. It's a hole in Belichick's game.
Starting point is 00:45:14 I was talking about this. Eight, nine years ago, Ryan Rosillo and I used to talk about this when they were winning Super Bowls is like, they just can't draft offense. They took Nikil Harry over D.K. Metcalf, A.J. Brown, Debo, Samuel. They took, by the way, Sony Michelle over Nick Chub. Now, some people did like Sony Michelle, but Georgia coaches used Chubb as the workhorse. Georgia coaches thought Chub was better than Sony Michelle. He took Sony Michelle first.
Starting point is 00:45:38 Some people did like Sony Michelle. They took Thornton, the wide receiver, over George Pickens. And that took about four catches to realize that was a bad decision. So Julian Edelman came on a show, and he loves coach. He calls him coach. He loves Belichick. Even he acknowledged on the offensive side, they're over their skis. They're tone deaf.
Starting point is 00:45:57 They just don't get it. I think he needs a little help on the offensive side. I mean, you look at the defensive picks. They all look pretty good. I mean, they always come out and they perform. And I hate talking about coach like this, but we have whiffed on a lot of offensive skill position players, you know, starting from, you know,
Starting point is 00:46:18 I don't want to call guys out, but there are three, four receivers when I was playing that we got in top rounds. You're looking and I was like, what's going on here? That's not a first rounder. I don't know what's going on. So I think he would be the first to tell you that he's had some screw-ups. He's a very accountable guy. And I do think that they probably do need a little more help on the offensive side of scouting.
Starting point is 00:46:44 The question is, is Belichick has he become the father driving the car and he's lost and the family is pleading for him to pull over and get direction? And he's saying, I've been here a million times. I know where I'm going. I know the way. I've got, everybody's pleading it, dad. Dad, pull over, get directions. I don't need GPS.
Starting point is 00:47:06 I've been here before. I've been very successful before. I know the way around town. That's what it kind of feels like. Bill's gotten rigid. Bobby Knight got rigid. Tony Larusa got rigid. Greg Popovich, don't want to shoot threes.
Starting point is 00:47:18 Got rigid. Nothing punctures brilliance like rigidity. You got to keep moving. I mean, Andy Reid is going back and bringing plays from the 1952 Rose Bowl to put them in big games, like constantly trying to get better, find new ways to do stuff. So it does feel like you want to add to. pull over and get directions and dad's like, I've been here 100 times. I know what I'm doing.
Starting point is 00:47:40 They don't. They do not know what they're doing drafting skill players. They don't have a clue. It's not like they're kind of missing. They're missing badly, really badly. So there you go. Joel Clatt, top of next hour. There's a lot of stuff going on.
Starting point is 00:47:58 This is a huge college football weekend. Off the Texas Oklahoma game. I still think Texas is better. There I said it. do. I think they'll meet again. They'll beat them. What's Clat think? Maybe he'll push back. USC Notre Dame, Michigan best team in the country, Oregon, Washington, the herd. Another podcast from some SNL late-night comedy guy, not quite. Unhumor me with Robert Smygel and friends. Me and hilarious guests from Bob Odenkirk to David Letterman help make you funnier. This week,
