Starting point is 00:00:00 This is an I-Heart podcast. Guaranteed Human. Another podcast from some SNL, late-night comedy guy, not quite. Unhumor me with Robert Smygel and friends. Me and hilarious guests from Bob Odenkirk to David Letterman help make you funnier. This week, my guest, SNL's Mikey Day and head writer, Streeter Seidel, help an a cappella band with their between songs banter.
Starting point is 00:00:23 Where does your group perform? We do some retirement homes. Those people are starving for banter. Listen to humor me with Robert Smigel and friends on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Imagine an Olympics where doping is not only legal, but encouraged. It's the enhanced games. Some call it grotesque.
Starting point is 00:00:42 Others say it's unleashing human potential. Either way, the podcast's Superhuman documented it all, embedded in the games and with the athletes for a full year. Within probably 10 days, I'd put on 10 pounds. I was having trouble stopping the muscle growth. Listen to Superhuman on the I-Hard Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Hey, this is Robert from the Stuff to Blow Your Mind podcast. Joe and I are both lifelong Star Wars fan, so we're celebrating May the 4th with a brand new week of fun, thought-provoking Star Wars-related episodes.
Starting point is 00:01:16 Join us as we tackle science and culture topics from a galaxy far, far away, such as the biology of tauntons and wampas on the ice planet hot, or the practicality and corporate business sense of the Sith rule. of two. Listen to Stuff to Bole Your Mind on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Welcome to the herd. Happy Monday, everybody. It's me, Jason McIntyre, in for vacationing Colin Cowherd. I'm joined by Alex Curry. Very exciting day we got, Alex. A lot of news. NFL stuff happening fast and furious. You do anything awesome over the weekend. I actually had like a pretty mellow.
Starting point is 00:01:57 I'm like the crazy dog house right now. We have four dogs in our house right now. So yeah, just relax, hung out around town, watched a lot of sports, watched USA, watched Messi's debut. And a lot of baseball. Talk a little soccer here. I had some baseball as well. Fun weekend, unless you're an NFL running back. Not great, not great, they say.
Starting point is 00:02:16 I do want to start the show there. It's weird. Usually we talk about quarterbacks in the off season. You guys remember last year, of course, massive quarterback. I mean, Russell Wilson has a new home. Matt Ryan changed venues. Carson Wentz to Washington. There was the Aaron Rogers drama.
Starting point is 00:02:33 Usually we talk about quarterback drama. And there is none this offseason. Other than Aaron Rogers going to the Jets and everything's kumbaya over there, there isn't one quarterback controversy in the league. And there's really nothing sexy about the rookie quarterbacks. None of them are expected to do great. So we're turning our attention to the guy who touches the football the most after the quarterback, and that's the running back.
Starting point is 00:02:54 And ladies and gentlemen, I don't know how you spent your Saturday night, but NFL running backs got together on a Zoom call for this big to-do about their perilous position. We all know that there's a bunch of 28-year-old, talented running backs currently unsigned. Dalvin Cook doesn't have a home. He's a talented player, Leonard Fournette, Ezekiel Elliott, Kareem Hunt. None of these guys are signed. And then you've got Sequin Barkley and Josh Jacobs kind of holding out. Well, Austin Echler apparently led this call.
Starting point is 00:03:26 Shout out to Austin Echler, a man of action, not just words, man of action. And unfortunately, it didn't go great. Here's Nick Job, the best running back in the NFL of the Cleveland Browns, talking about that huge Zoom call over the weekend. Right now it's just talking. There's really nothing we can do. We're kind of handcuffed with the situation. But, I mean, what I took from it, McCaffrey and Derek Henry,
Starting point is 00:03:49 Insane, Ence Coyne, I had a lot of good points. But the biggest thing is that we're the only position. that our production hurts us the most. You know, if we go out there and run for 2,000 yards with so many carriers, the next year they're going to say, you know, you're probably worn down. That's the biggest thing that I took from, it's just, me, it's tough. You know, it hurts us just to go out there and do good. It hurts us at the end of the day.
Starting point is 00:04:09 Boy, that is extremely disappointing, but accurate. It's almost like a new car. You know, I've talked about it on my old Saturday radio show. One of my favorite books of all times is called The Millionaire Next Door. And it said, never buy a brand new car. Just never do it because you drive it off the lot and it instantly goes down in value, depreciating asset. I only bought one new car in my life and I did it when I was a young single guy trying to impress girls.
Starting point is 00:04:35 Newsflash guys, the ladies aren't impressed with the new car. They don't. And if they are, probably not the girl you want. At any rate, you know, Nick Chubb is spot on. The running backs are in a tough spot. They really can't do anything. I mean, what are they going to do? Like galvanize like Voltron and say, guys, let's all hold out.
Starting point is 00:04:52 Let's no running back show up to training camp. That'll show them. Unfortunately, something like that's not going to work because there is always someone ready to come in and say, you know what, I've got to put food on the table. I will gladly carry the football in Arizona or Atlanta or wherever you want. There's guys in the USFL that will gladly take the jobs. So ultimately, this comes down to the individuals.
Starting point is 00:05:15 Enter Sequin Barclay in New York. We know Josh Jacobs with the Raiders. Listen, they're going to be bad whether he plays. are not. Sequin Barclay is the one guy who maybe kind of controls his situation. Now, I have said a lot of nice things about Sequin. Barclay, I do believe he should have been paid by the New York Giants. But if you're in Berkeley's camp right now, a lot of people are going to say, Sequin, you don't want to become the next levy on Bell. Remember what he did? He held out in Pittsburgh, said, I want to get paid. You're not going to pay me. Okay, I'm out.
Starting point is 00:05:48 ends up with my New York Jets. And I saw Sequin with the Jets. Didn't go well. He did not look good at all. And essentially his career just petered out after that. He had a shot with the Chiefs. It didn't work out. But what's interesting about Sequan's case is Levyon Bell was in Pittsburgh
Starting point is 00:06:04 with Ben Rathosberger, a really strong offensive line, and this receiver in his prime by the name of Antonio Brown. Okay? You lose Sequan, that team's still going to be good. That's still a playoff team. Oh, sorry, if you lose Levyon in Pryon in Pryon, Pittsburgh, that's still a playoff team. You lose Sequin in New York? Not the same thing. And that's where it gets interesting for Sequan Barclay. I'm going to put the schedule up here
Starting point is 00:06:27 of the New York Giants early in the season. Take a look, ladies and gentlemen, okay? If you go by the opener against Dallas, you know, they're at home. I think Dallas wins that game. Giants are at home, but they don't home field advantage against the Cowboys. Give them the Arizona win. What's going to happen in those next four games? San Francisco, clearly better will be favored. Seattle, you could call it a toss-up in New York. York. They got to go to Miami and Buffalo back-to-back games. They will be underdogs. There's a real chance. They open the season. One in five? Is that possible? Can you see a one in five? And then what? One in five, no Saquan, Barclay. Then what if you're the New York Giants?
Starting point is 00:07:05 So again, it's tough for me to sit here and say, hey, Sequin, hold out. You should do it. But listen to one of his teammates. Xavier McKinney, who was a safety at Alabama, he wore the green dot on the defense last year. He called. the plays on the defense, very integral player on the defense. Listen closely to what Xavier McKinney said about Saquan Barkley's situation. For me, you know, I've talked to him. And regardless of any decision that he makes, whether he's there, whether he's not there, I respect it 100%. I'm behind him 100%. And I wouldn't have no, you know, no hard feelings, no nothing towards him, you know, whatever decision that he decides. Obviously, you know, we want him to be there. But if you
Starting point is 00:07:47 can't, you know, we understand that as well. And I think, you know, that's not just for me, but that goes for a lot of guys in our locker room. So I just don't want that to be the narrative of, you know, if he decides not to come, then nobody's going to be mad. You hear that closely? A lot of guys in that locker room. I just told you he's one of the defensive leaders on the team. So I'll give Colin some credit. He's been early on this, but we are shaping up to have a fractured locker room in New York. And I know Sequin's talking the talk about maybe I sit out the opener against Dallas. Sequin, maybe you push it further. And again, it's easy for me to sit up here and say, Sequin, don't take paychecks for the first seven weeks of the season or whatever it is.
Starting point is 00:08:27 But, you know, if you want to be a principled guy and you want to say, you know what, you guys shafted me, I think a lot of players in that New York locker room, based on what Xavier McKinney just said, would understand. And I will remind everybody this. Daniel Jones has been in League four seasons. His first two seasons, he was a turnover machine led the NFL in turnovers, interceptions and fumbles. They've slowly ticked down every season. Last year, he threw a whopping 15 touchdown passes and had the fewest turnovers of his career. I think we attribute a lot of that to Brian Daibald. Why is that? Brian Daibald said, bro, hey, be a game manager. We're not forcing anything. We got Seekuan Barkley. It's 1,600 yards from scrimmage. Again, it's easy for me to say up here,
Starting point is 00:09:10 hey, Sequan, do this. But I'm just telling you guys right now, the most important guys in that New York Giants team. Number one, Brian Dable, the head coach. He's an offensive genius. Number two is Seacuan Barclay. Daniel Jones would be number three. I firmly believe if Sequan sits out, they open one in five. New York will have a new outlook on what it thinks will be happening this season with Sequan Barclay. I want to quickly pivot to Mr. Leonell Messi. I don't know how you guys spent your Friday night, but I was watching the Women's World Cup and then Messi comes on around the 50th minute
Starting point is 00:09:44 on a different channel and I'm toggling between the games oh boy so you guys know I'm a big soccer guy I own part of a team in the top league in Mexico and I follow soccer closely I call my kids over
Starting point is 00:09:57 to make sure they watch the women's World Cup as well as Messi and this game Messi's game is 1-1 we're late in the game I'm like guys this is feeling like one of those moments like Messi comes to the league
Starting point is 00:10:08 goes to the worst team in MLS, the intra-M-M-Riamy is a total disaster. And this is shaping up as one of those moments, guys, where, like, I'm telling my kids, like, when I was a kid, I would go in the basement with, you know, we had the little Nerf hoop on the door, and I would count down the clock. Five seconds left, fake dribbling between my legs.
Starting point is 00:10:28 McIntyre fade away, three! And it would miss or clang off the rim. And then I get the ball again, I do it again. Four seconds, three, the bank! And maybe it goes in and I'm celebrating. I'm the hero. The victory is mine. I know you guys have gone in the backyard, right?
Starting point is 00:10:42 You know, my brother didn't want to play wiffle ball with me or whatever, so I would just toss the wiffle ball up, take the bat and try to hit home runs and be like Joe Carter, hitting an unbelievable home run memorable in the World Series. The Kirk Gibson walk off. Who can forget that? And we want to be the hero. If you've ever played sports, man, it is a great feeling.
Starting point is 00:11:03 The opposite feeling would be, I'll never forget my club's soccer career when I was a young guy ended. We were in this state tournament. This was in Virginia, and we went to penalty kicks. I was nervous as hell. And I could see, like, we had some good young players coming up. And this was probably going to be my last year. I was a late bloomer.
Starting point is 00:11:20 I was getting knocked off the ball. It was frustrating, and I missed my PK. And the dejection, it was real. But the opposite is also true. And what Messi did on this free kick, and I believe the 93rd minute, to win the game was one of those sports moments. live for. If you like sports you've ever played sports, this is the stuff dreams are made of. Here's the messy moment. Here it is. Messy! That happens and I am, I'm sure Alex was freaking out too,
Starting point is 00:12:03 but I know at my house, I was freaking out, like, just bedlam and the kids are just like, this is really happening. I mean, just think about it, okay? The guy turns down over a billion dollars from Saudi Arabia to decide, you know, I'm going to go to the worst team in the MLS because I want to live near South Beach. And who knows? Maybe we'll make something happen. Now listen, Messi's had a billion great moments in his career. This is probably not even a top 10 moment for Messi. The guy just won the World Cup with Argentina, okay? He argued as the greatest soccer player ever. I would say he is. I know a lot of people want to go Palais, Maradona. I get that. At my gym,
Starting point is 00:12:41 I would go, there was like a food stand and I would go to get like a smoothie drink. And the guy who was working there for years was in Argentinian. And, I would always be like, oh, Messi's the man. He's like, no way, Maradona, won a World Cup. Messies never won a World Cup. So, of course, you know, as soon as Messi wins a World Cup, I go in there, I'm like, Messi, he's the greatest now. And the guy starts laughing.
Starting point is 00:13:04 And Messi's done a lot of great things. For me, this moment right here, it was less about the MLS and the exact moment. It was a League's Cup game, which I don't want to get into. But it was a big win for Miami and the fans. But you guys know who else was there, right? You saw LeBron, Kim Kardashian not as important, but the camera loves her. And LeBron hugged Messi.
Starting point is 00:13:26 I saw they gave each other a shout out on social media. And one of our smart producers today was like, you know what? Messi's kind of starting something in Miami the way LeBron had his little heodles. Hey guys, come down to Miami. We're not going to win, not one, not two. And now all of a sudden, Messi's bringing some pretty renowned international players to come play for Inter Miami. Maybe there's something cooking there. And it's fun, but I don't know about you, Alex.
Starting point is 00:13:50 I absolutely love that moment. That's everything sports are about, at least to me. And again, this isn't a highlight of Messi's career, right? This is way down the list. He's done some amazing things. But as a sports fan watching that, I just, I love every moment of it. It was a magical debut. It's exactly what you expect and what everyone knew he was going to bring to the game.
Starting point is 00:14:12 It's why ticket prices won up 10 times. That's why jersey sales went insane. That's why the value of Inner Miami just blew up the moment that he signed there. I was watching both this game and the U.S. Women's National game at a soccer bar underground and the whole place just erupted.
Starting point is 00:14:29 I mean, there was just so much passion and love. And I think Messi can be the guy that really takes U.S. soccer, the MLS, to that next level, where it is across the world. We are kind of the last place where it's not as big as it is in other countries around the world. but he has a chance to really change that.
Starting point is 00:14:50 And we saw the magical moment in his debut on Friday. The closest I ever came to any kind of, you know, moment like that. I played in a New York City men's league for basketball. And, you know, you'd go to gyms around the city. And we were down two with like five seconds left. And I hit like a 30-foot three-pointer. And of course, the crowd goes wild. There was no crowd.
Starting point is 00:15:13 It was just like the 10 guys on the team. The crowd in your mind. Yeah. And it was just one of those moments that my guys ran up to me and picked me up. And I felt like a hero. It was an amazing moment. And it's like, I can't even fathom what was going through Messi's head as the stadiums erupting. I mean, social media goes off.
Starting point is 00:15:28 Well, this is what he does. He's the best. This is why you bring somebody of his caliber over to the MLS and to the United States. Because moments like these are his bread and butter and what he does. And you know the moment he steps up, something special is going to happen. Yeah. And next up on the herd. Listen, I mentioned LeBron was at Messi's game, folks.
Starting point is 00:15:48 Is there a new beef between LeBron James and my guy, Steph Curry? Don't go anywhere. It's The Herd. Thanks for listening to The Herd podcast. Starting point is 00:16:21 Some call it grotesque. Others say it's unleashing human potential. Either way, the podcast's Superhuman documented it all, embedded in the games and with the athletes for a full year. Within probably 10 days, I'd put on 10 pounds. Starting point is 00:16:43 A win is a win. A win is a win. I don't care what you're saying. Yep, that's me, Clifford Taylor the 4th. You might have seen the skits, the reactions, my journey from basketball to college football,
Starting point is 00:16:56 or my career in sports media. Well, somewhere along the way, this platform became bigger than I ever imagined. And now I'm bringing all of that excitement to my brand new podcast, The Clifford Show. This is a place for raw,
Starting point is 00:17:08 unfiltered conversations with some of your favorite athletes, creators, and voices that not only deserve to be heard, but celebrated. One week I'll take you behind the scenes of the biggest moments in sports and entertainment, and the next we'll talk about life, mental health, purpose, and even music. Do you remember when Diana Ross double-tap Little Kim's boobs at the VMAs? Or when Kanye said that George Bush didn't like black people. I know what you're thinking. What the hell does George Bush got to do with Little Kim? Well, you can find out on the Look Back at it podcast.
Starting point is 00:18:01 I'm Sam J. And I'm Alex English. Each episode, we pick a here, unpack what went down, and try to make sense of how we survived it. Including a recent episode with Mark Lamont Hill, waxing all about crack in the 80s. To be clear, 84 was big to me, not just because of crack. I'm down to talk about crack on day, but just so you know. I mean, at this point, this is the second episode where we've discussed crack.
Starting point is 00:18:24 So I'm starting to see that there's a through line. We also have AIDS on the table right now. Thank you finishing that sentence. I don't think there's a more important year for black people. Really? Yeah. For me, it's one of the most important years for black people in American history. Listen to look back at it on the IHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.
Starting point is 00:18:47 Okay, I know the NBA is on hiatus. We're just waiting for Dame and James Harden to figure things out. James Hardin, notably not at one of his teammates' weddings over the weekend. We may touch on that later. But my guy, Steph Curry, you guys know I'm a huge Curry fan. I've told the story a ton. Just a great ambassador for the NBA. So he's doing a little media tour.
Starting point is 00:19:09 I don't know if we're going to be able to get him. here on the show, unlikely, about his new Apple show. I forget the name of it, but apparently it's pretty good. I watched about half of it. I haven't finished it. And he's doing a media tour. And Steph Curry was asked, because this is how you generate interest. Steph, name your all time starting five. And I don't know if Steph Curry gave this much thought. Maybe I'm being too sinister here. But Steph Curry left one big name out of his starting top five. Okay. Steph had Magic Johnson, understandable, Michael Jordan, Kobe Bryant at the three, I guess, Tim Duncan and Shaq. Now, almost all of those guys played in the same era. There was a little
Starting point is 00:19:56 crossover with Tim Duncan, I think in the early 2000s. Shaq went a little longer. Kobe went a little longer. And it's a fine starting five. But you, you know, know what the big picture takeaway is on social media. Whoa, whoa, he left LeBron off the list. J. Mack, he's got LeBron number one all time. A lot of other guys got LeBron number two all time. LeBron's even on the starting five. Curry's taking a shot at LeBron. And then you give it a little more thought. You know, that's a surface level stuff that basic gibronies will give you on the internet. So think about it a little deeper. Curry left himself off the list. I think a lot of people would put him on there. I'll get my top five in a sec, or my starting five in a second.
Starting point is 00:20:39 But what if Curry views himself on LeBron's level? Like more of a peer than I'm looking up to LeBron? What if Curry says, you know what, we've kind of dominated the league for the last, I don't know, 10 years? You could argue, there's a capable argument to be made that what Curry and LeBron have had over about a decade span, was pretty much what Bird and Magic had in the 80s. There's a real argument for that. I mean, Curry and LeBron have dominated the NBA. Interestingly, they have the same number of titles.
Starting point is 00:21:17 Interestingly, Curry is 3 and 1 against LeBron in the finals. Now, 3 and 2 overall because the Warriors lost to the Lakers in this postseason. But it's entirely possible, ladies and gentlemen, that Steph Curry views himself as an equal to LeBron. And I don't think there's anything wrong with that. You could make a legitimate argument that Steph Curry was the more impactful player in terms of changing the game during his career than LeBron. I mean, you could argue Curry changed the game more than a lot of the guys on his starting five. Like, I know LeBron was ushering in the super teams, but I've argued this on the show.
Starting point is 00:21:53 And again, I know I keep using the word argue. Folks, when I was a young guy, I wanted to be a lawyer, you know. I really thought I was going to be a lawyer. I could argue anything. I'm seeing a lot of that in my kid. A little frustrating to deal with it now. but I digress. And you could really look at Curry's career and say,
Starting point is 00:22:08 yeah, he changed a game more than LeBron. And Curry has beaten LeBron head to head in the finals. But, Jay, he had Kevin Durant for two of those. Okay, okay, fine. He beat him in 2015, lost to him in 2016. Then LeBron, him and Curry have like a, I don't want to say, frenemy situation developing. Because LeBron has gushed about Curry
Starting point is 00:22:27 and Curry's gushed about LeBron. But I do wonder if Curry said, I'm closer to LeBron than the masses think. I know it's tough to think of because LeBron is 6-9 or 6-8 or 6-9 and like 250s, like a tank and Curry's this wispy below the rim, 6-foot-3 guy. But on my all-time starting five, I have both Curry and LeBron. Now, I love Magic Johnson, but he doesn't make my list for my modern starting five. Curry for shooting, MJ, an incredible two-way player.
Starting point is 00:23:00 I have LeBron who's a facilitator. I have Larry Bird. Again, this is my modern starting five. Larry Bird will step out and hit the three and then get you 10 assists in a heartbeat. And then I have Wilt a bit of a surprise seeing that, you know, Wilt's career ended well before I was even born. But when everything you look at for Wilt, I would love to see Wilt go head to head with Shack. This is a guy who is from his time just utterly dominant in every facet.
Starting point is 00:23:28 and I get my just one big, and you could theoretically play with four out, although LeBron's not a great shooter, but that starting five is impenetrable. There is no holes in it whatsoever. I know you could make incredible argument that Tim Duncan somewhere belongs on this list. I like Duncan a lot.
Starting point is 00:23:47 I like Larry Bird for the modern game, the shooting. My starting five shooting would be incredible. But I think it's worth monitoring the Curry, LeBron, whatever it is that's going on there, because these are two seminal players in the league over the last, you know, 13, 15 years, LeBron a little bit longer. And I just wonder ultimately if they view themselves on the same level.
Starting point is 00:24:08 I know LeBron thinks he's way up here, but just it's worth keeping an eye on. Let's go to Alex Curry with the news. No, no, no, no, no. Turn on the news. This is the herd line news. J-Mack, it's actually very on brand with his new show called Underrated. Oh, yes. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:24:24 So it's, he does. Yeah. But he always has been kind of just not thought of and talked about on that same level as a brawn, but definitely has been. Yeah. Yeah, interesting. All right. Well, let's get to the NFL and start in the NFL where Bill's running back. Nahim Hines is expected to miss the 2023 season after suffering a knee injury away from team facilities.
Starting point is 00:24:43 Now, he was reportedly sitting on a stationary jet ski when another rider crashed into him. He sustained serious but non-life-threatening injuries and will require surgery. Now this is just heartbreaking for Heinz, a freak accident. And in moments like these, you're just thankful it's not life-threatening because when you kind of visualize something like that where you're sitting there on a jet ski and now the jet ski runs into you, it could have been a lot worse. But just brutal. Also for the bills, kickoff training camp, not having one of your guys there. More running back unfortunate news. Just kind of adding to why they want to get paid now.
Starting point is 00:25:21 Anything you can happen. You never know. but it's just heartbreaking. I think he was the one who had the kick return in the first game back after the Damar Hamlin situation. Very good multiple skill running back. Catch a lot of passes out of the backfield, special teams. The sad state of where running backs are now, Alex, I wonder how many agents of other running
Starting point is 00:25:46 backs instantly called the bills and said, oh, Heinz is out. That's terrible. So, I got a running back for you. Are you interested? I got Dalvin Cook online too. It's a business. It is. And again, the bills aren't going to want to pay who they get
Starting point is 00:25:58 because Heinz's contract I'm assuming is not one of the highly compensated players. Here's that kick return, I believe. And it's just one of those situations where, yeah, can you imagine now if the bills say, well, let's go get Dalvin Cook. And now you got Diggs, Cook, who used to be teammates in Minnesota. You got Josh Allen.
Starting point is 00:26:17 And it's like, okay, fine, well, we can't afford Dalvin Cook. We'll go Kareem Hunt. Kuhn. Yeah. Fournett's still out there, Ezekiel Elliott. Yep. So I feel awful for Heinz, a jet ski injury? I wonder if other, you know, agents out there are just like to their running backs.
Starting point is 00:26:35 Hey, can you just get in some bubble wrap here heading into camp? Well, that's the thing, too, because I know a lot of athletes in the contract, there's certain things you can't do, right? But I don't imagine jet ski being one of the things on there. I haven't jet skiing in a while. It doesn't feel that dangerous. It's so fun. Well, I mean, it is.
Starting point is 00:26:51 It's a motorized. vehicle, like on the water, and if you're not in control, and again, it wasn't him. Someone crashed into him. He said he was sitting, stationary, so he was just sitting on the jet ski and someone ran into him. Yeah, just a freak accident. That's just brutal. Right?
Starting point is 00:27:07 I know. All right. Well, let's move on to the NBA because James Hardin sent another message to the 76ers following his desire for a trade. Now, he recently removed the team from his social media bios and posted an Instagram story saying it's time to get uncomfortable. Hardin was also notable. absent from Joelle and Bede's wedding on Saturday.
Starting point is 00:27:27 He's also housing some burgers, but this is going to be real awkward when he ends up back at camp here, right? No, here's the hamburger video, yes. Yeah. Like, like by 76ers, not going to come to my teammate, my star teammates' wedding, but. We don't really have context on where this is. Do it? That looked like PJ Tucker at the very end.
Starting point is 00:27:49 But Harder, Hardin looks like he has been working out. appear that doughy in the video. I like how he's just wearing the plain white tank top. It looks like everyone's in a tank top. It looks hot as heck wherever that is. Yeah, but it's just, I mean, again, it's still very up in the air if the 76ers are going to trade. And they've made it known that they have to get something of value in return. And Hardin did say if he doesn't get traded, he will show up to training camp. But after a move like this, taking the team off of your social media bios, you know, he doesn't want to be there. And so you're going in to camp. And so you're going in to up with the mentality that you don't want to be there.
Starting point is 00:28:24 Nothing good ever comes from that when you have one of your star players, publicly say, I don't want to be here, remove you from their social media, and then you're still kind of forced with them. He really put, it's time to get uncomfortable? Yep. You know, because I'm kind of an impatient guy, I started doing yoga a few years ago and this great yoga teacher, his big thing was you've got to get uncomfortable in this room. You got to get uncomfortable.
Starting point is 00:28:50 And I get it with yoga. There's some positions that are uncomfortable. like painful. Yep. What does Harden mean, Alex, by it's time to get uncomfortable? What does this mean like extra strip club trips? No working out? No, I think it means it's going to get
Starting point is 00:29:04 uncomfortable between him and the 76ers. Like, he's made it known, like, I want to get traded. They don't necessarily want to trade him unless they get a good package for him. He's like, all right, well, it's time to get uncomfortable because I want to go. This isn't going to be comfortable with me here. Does uncomfortable mean I'm going to make it uncomfortable for everyone else, too? Yeah, he's just started.
Starting point is 00:29:20 He took you off of social media, he's publicly saying he doesn't want to be there. That is the uncomfort. I wonder if Hardin will start giving interviews that are, I don't know. I mean, you can take this a lot of ways. You can. You can't. Very uncomfortable very quickly.
Starting point is 00:29:33 Uh-huh. I just wonder, I did see a report about the Sixers. They might just say, we're not trading you show up. Yeah. And he's going to, you know, it's going to be real awkward, but he's going to be there. Yeah. He might end up on the losing end here. I don't, listen, Hardin don't have a lot of leverage.
Starting point is 00:29:51 It's not like there's a robust. market for James Hardin out there. He signed a contract. Yeah. I don't know. Yeah. By the way, did you see the brand of burgers that he was eating or is it just some generic one? I was not familiar with the brand of burgers. It looked like a Wendy's box, but the colors were with yellow. No, no, no, no, no. Wendy's is like red. Okay. Right? I think so. By the way. There you go. There's the burgl burgers. There is. I don't know what that means. It's probably a burger place. Probably a Houston thing, right? I have no idea. I have to look it up on the TikTok account. Go deep, go deep, like a deep dive down the
Starting point is 00:30:22 The hardened burgers. Looks like a vibe there though, right? Burgers sweat. Oh, J. Mack. Yeah, he's having a time. He's at a club, eating burgers. Indeed. Yeah, I mean, that's what I would want to do if I was at a club.
Starting point is 00:30:32 All right. Moving on to Otani news because we are officially on Shohei Otani. Watch in the Angels' last home game before the tread deadline. Shohei Otani hit his MLB leading 36 home run last night. Otani's future is up in the air as the August 1st deadline approaches. And the Angels are still in a playoff hunt and could choose to keep. him in an effort to make a push for the postseason. Now the big question is was this kind of Otani's farewell tour at the Big A right now we are about a week away
Starting point is 00:31:04 from the trade deadline it's Tuesday next week now our Fox Sports MLB staff writers all came together and put together 12 mock trades possible for Otani in different teams. Yeah yeah really great I think the Yankees one stood out the most as the possible best one but The Angels are playing well right now. So I think this week, they play Detroit and they play the Blue Jays. And pending how they do this week, leading up to Tuesday, the trade deadline will determine what Artie Moreno and the Angels choose to do with Shohei Otani. And my gut feeling is unless they get an offer that they cannot refuse, they're going to keep Otani.
Starting point is 00:31:46 They're going to try to stay in the hunt until Mike Trout gets back. Right now, they're just four games out of a wild car. spot with just two teams ahead of them. And I think they're going to go for it. But just to kind of put it into perspective, everyone, Mike Trout has been with the Angels for over a decade. He has only played in three playoff games. He has lost all three.
Starting point is 00:32:03 Joe Otani has yet to play in a playoff game. His biggest thing is he wants to win. So you've got to think of long term. Is he going to stay at the end of the season once he's a free agent if you keep him? Probably not because history, just over the last decade, has kind of proven itself as to what will happen. And do you get something for him? Or if you have the best player in baseball,
Starting point is 00:32:24 do you try to keep them and make a run if you have a shot? So one thing that jumps out, Alex, at that video that they're showing, a lot of empty seats in Anaheim this weekend. Now, I know it's hot as Hades here, but that's a lot of empty seats with Otani playing. What's that all about? I got to be honest with you. I haven't been down there since I stopped working for the broadcast.
Starting point is 00:32:44 So we, of course, we are the one show in America where there's like five angels fans that are in the, in the room when we're putting these together. And I'm like, if there are only four games out, why can't they already Moreno swing for the fence? Let's make some trades. Let's bring in some guys that they can help us. Because they depleted the farm system.
Starting point is 00:33:00 They've already done that. They don't have a lot to give up. Apparently, there's really not one or two guys out there that could swing things for the angels. You can't trade for a couple guys. They already did that. They literally traded away their farm system over the last 10 years and have not rebuilt it.
Starting point is 00:33:18 And it has not gotten back to that. place. Plus, do you want to give away everything you have and then Otani not resign at the end of the season? What if it's Otani? We're doing everything we can't. We're giving away our farm system. Doesn't matter. He said he wants to win. Well, we're trying to win. He's been there. They've tried and they haven't even gotten to the playoffs. Ask Mike Trout. One of the best players in baseball. Never want a playoff game with the Angels. It's tough. So we got what a week left? Next Tuesday. Yeah. Eight days. Already Moran. You're on the clock, buddy.
Starting point is 00:33:50 Alex with the news. Well, that's the news. And thanks for stopping by. The Hurd Lie News. All right, coming up next, the biggest similarity between Tom Brady and Patrick Mahomes. And, oh, by the way, at the top of the next hour, I steal one of Collins' favorite segments where Jay Mack was right, where Jay Mac was wrong. A lot of wrong there. That's next here on The Herd.

Or when Kanye said that George Bush didn't like black people. I know what you're thinking. What the hell does George Bush got to do with Little Kim? Well, you can find out on the Look Back at it podcast. I'm Sam J.
Starting point is 00:36:50 And I'm Alex English. Each episode, we pick it here, unpack what went down, and try to make sense of how we survived it. Including a recent episode with Mark Lamont Hill waxing all about crack in the 80s. To be clear, 84 is big to me, not just because of crack. I'm down to talk about crack on day, but just so y'all know. I mean, at this point, Mark, this is the second episode where we've discussed crack. So I'm starting to see that there's a through line. We also have AIDS on the table right now.
Starting point is 00:37:16 Thank you for finishing that sentence. I don't think there's a more important year for black people. Really? Yeah. For me, it's one of the most important years for black people in American history. Listen to look back at it on the IHeart radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Saturday, it's baseball night in America on Fox. John Carlos Stanton powers the Yankees against rising star Adley Ruchman and the Orioles or Randy Rose Arena and the Ray's Battle the Astros or the Red Sox take
Starting point is 00:37:46 on the giant Saturday at 7eastern on Fox. Check for the game in your area. So I spent a chunk of the weekend attending a chess tournament. My son, a 12-year-old, played in his first serious chess tournament. And there are like super strict rules at these chess tournaments. I didn't know. Like, there's just massive ballroom, all these games happening. You can't be on your phone.
Starting point is 00:38:11 So I go there with my phone, some reading material. And obviously I knew I was hosting the herd. I had, you know, notes to start doing stuff, and I start looking stuff up on my phone. They're like, hey, hey, you can't be on your phone in here. It's like, all right. So I had to put the phone away, and I had to kind of freelance it, you know, and start doing research. I started drilling down on one topic individual. And I got into this weird place where I'm looking at the New England Patriots and how they built their dynasty.
Starting point is 00:38:37 And there were really only two constants, right, Bill Belichick and Tom Brady. You could say Gronk was a significant part of that and we'll get. get to him shortly. But the way they built it was kind of fascinating. They would constantly evolve. One year, who is the big running back? Garret Blunt is rushing for 18 touchdowns. And then another year they have, I think it was it, Corey Dillon had a monster running back season. And then they were like, no, no, no, we're going to pivot to running backs who can catch passes. And here's Shane Verrine out of the backfield. And then it's James White, constantly evolving. And then you look at the wide receivers and like Dion Branch wins, I think, a super
Starting point is 00:39:16 MVP. And he got West Welker. And then, okay, he's done now. Let's put in Danny Amandola. And here comes Julian Edelman. And it's constantly evolving. And oh, now we're going to go to two tight end sets. We're going to go Gronk and Aaron Hernandez. And then now we're going to go, oh, we're going to bring in Randy Moss. And they're constantly changing, but there were only two constants. Andy Reed and Tom Brady. I'm sorry, Bill Belichick and Tom Brady, which brings me to Andy Reed and Patrick Mahomes and what's happening in Kansas City. And I don't know if you guys are big fantasy football players or gamblers. I do both. So I've got to be up to speed on all these injuries. And a guy that everybody in Casey likes is Cadarius Tony. The kid had a lot of juice at Florida,
Starting point is 00:39:58 major bounce on the outside. You get him the ball in space. He'll embarrass people. He is a super talented player. So he injures his knee. Now injuries have been a bugaboo for him since he got to the league. Giants took him in the first round. Cadarius Tony was supposed to be special, kept getting hurt. When he did play in limited fashion, he pops on the screen. he had a nice couple moments in the Super Bowl. But Kadiris Terni, Tony hurt his knee this week, and I'm like, oh, geez, what are the Chiefs going to do at wide receiver? And you start looking at the wide receiver room, and I had to look. I'm like, whoa, Skymore, MVS, who they got for the Packers, and Rishie Rice.
Starting point is 00:40:34 And I start, you know, thinking about, wait, Rishie Rice. Oh, that's right. The Scouts love that guy. And you look at that wide receiver room and you're like, wait a minute, the Chiefs are going back to the Super Bowl with Skymore. and MVS and Roshira. What's happening here? And I start then looking historically at the Chief's wide receivers.
Starting point is 00:40:54 And it's like, oh, okay, last year, Jujo Smith-Schuster had 78 receptions. He's gone. Jerich McKinn out of the backfield had nine touchdowns. Whoa. They really mixed it up. Year before that, Byron Pringle,
Starting point is 00:41:05 remember him? I don't either. Five touchdowns. Year before that, Tyreek Hill popped for a few years, obviously. Mikul Hardman, four touchdowns. DeMarcus Robinson. Are you sensing a theme?
Starting point is 00:41:16 ladies new gentlemen, Chris Conley in 2018 had five touchdowns. Chris Conley. I don't remember going anywhere else doing anything. And then you look at 2019. Sammy Watkins, remember him? The Kansas City Chiefs are doing exactly what the Patriots did. We got our constants, the head coach and the quarterback. After that, everyone else is just filler and we're rotating.
Starting point is 00:41:40 Yes, Travis Kelsey has been a constant, kind of like Rob Grunkowski was, a constant for Brady. But what's super interesting to me is wide receiver injury to Cadarious Tony, that's not really a big deal. Like, it stinks for Tony, obviously, and it stinks to lose a player. But the way the Kansas City Chief System is set up, they're going to be fine. And the longer they can do this, whether it's Byron Pringle, DeMarcus Robinson, Chris Conley, plug and play. And this system, to me, is super dangerous for the league because they have kind of sort of how to do. And they have kind of the NFL. I had thought, I think I hosted the show earlier this spring,
Starting point is 00:42:21 and I thought, and it's not like a newfound concept, but to hack the NFL, you need your quarterback on a rookie deal, and then you spend, spend, spend instantly. Chicago Bears are doing it this year. We've seen other teams around the league rookie deal to a tongue of Iloa in Miami. Let's load up. Let's go get Jalen Ramsey. Let's go get Tyree Kill.
Starting point is 00:42:41 Spend, spend, spend when the quarterback's on the rookie deal. Then after that, you kind of got to hope that the quarterback and stay healthy and everyone else kind of gets underpaid. But Kansas City is doing the New England model, and it's a little scary because, and I had to look this up, in 19 years, the Patriots won 12 or more games 13 times. That is staggering success. The NFL is built for parity. They want everybody kind of good.
Starting point is 00:43:08 Everybody had to start a training camp here in the next week. Your team's got a shot at the playoffs. Super Bowl bubbles. By the way, the staff here doesn't love a Super Bowl bubble, so we're going to do AFC tiers coming up shortly. But you look at the tiers and it's like, wow, there's a couple heavyweights, then you've got like a robust middle class and then a couple of bottom feeders. Legitimately, at least 24 teams in this league go into this season thinking we've got a shot at the playoffs.
Starting point is 00:43:36 And you can look at the win totals and see the league is built for parity. The Patriots solve that. And it's a little bit interesting that the Kansas. the Kansas City Chiefs are on that track where they're going to say, hey, Jerich McKinnon, we got him, nine touchdowns this year. It's tough for fantasy, as I mentioned earlier. Like I play fantasy, probably going to do four leagues. I did win one last year, a couple bucks, which is nice.
Starting point is 00:44:00 It was nice. But you've got to follow all this stuff very intently. And then the closer you look, like nobody else in the league is built like this. I know the Cincinnati Bengals are good. Coach is not on the Reed, Belichick level. sorry, Zach Taylor. Joe Burrow, very, very good, but they're paying Jamar Chase a lot.
Starting point is 00:44:19 T. Higgins is going to get paid. You can't really, in this model, keep multiple stars. Chiefs had to lose Tyreek Hill. And they lost nothing on the field when Tyreek Hill goes to the Miami Dolphins. And if Miami, you know, can thrive with Hill for another year,
Starting point is 00:44:38 great, but then they got to pay Tua and we'll see what happens there. But the other thing that Kansas City has done extremely well is nail the draft the last few years. I started looking at the Kansas City Chief's defense, folks. It's long been a problem. It just hasn't been great. It's Chris Jones, who, by the way, didn't show up to camp.
Starting point is 00:44:56 Andy Reid was surprised. It'll be fine. But the Kansas City Chief's secondary, promising. Defensive line, they've drafted there. We'll see. Linebackers good. Listen, I know you don't like dynasties. I've been hyping the Golden State Warriors.
Starting point is 00:45:11 greatest dynasty ever. I love the super teams in the NBA. I don't know if football fans will love this dynasty for the chiefs that's coming. Like, nothing is going to stop this train short of Andy Reid retiring or Patrick Mahomes deciding, you know, I'm retiring early or some injury. But this Kansas City team right now is built because they have the new model. Get your superstar coach. And remember, Reed was not a superstar before he came to KC. Philadelphia got rid of him.
Starting point is 00:45:38 He was on the market for like seven minutes, but nevertheless, Reid and Mahomes, Belichick Brady. I tried to look around the league to find the next duo of that. And it's like, Stafford's up there in age, doesn't really match McVeigh's timeline. And you start looking around and there really aren't a lot of them. Kansas City is now set up to really do some damage. I know everybody loves the Chargers.
Starting point is 00:46:01 Collins' favorite team every year. Chargers, Chargers. Like, we don't even know if their head coach is going to be here next year. and you start looking around and you're like, damn, Reed and Mahomes really are going to dominate. And then you start to wonder, can this be duplicated? And then the answer is kind of sort of like, not really.
Starting point is 00:46:20 There are not a lot of Belichick's out there, but I will point out Belichick too. He had a nice little run in Cleveland short-lived before he had to resurface in New England. So it's not like he was automatic superstar right out of the gate, Bill Belichick. Like he was always a good coach, but now he's the greatest of all time. And you start to wonder, like, man, there really isn't this happening anywhere.
Starting point is 00:46:41 Kyle Shanahan's got his own little thing going on in San Francisco where he thinks maybe he can rotate the quarterback every few years. We'll see how that works out. Garapolo went extremely well. They got to a Super Bowl, another AFC title game. Sorry, NFC title game. That one they lost, of course. But I just, I don't think this is really going to be able to be done by many other teams
Starting point is 00:47:04 because you really don't have a Patrick Mahomes caliber quarterback anywhere else. Now, Brady, of course, did take less money over the long haul in New England. He was able to do that because his wife was a supermodel who I think the net worth was like in the neighborhood of $500 million. So he could take less so everybody else got paid. The one big difference between this chief's budding dynasty and what the Patriots built is Belichick was a defensive guy. And I really do wonder,
Starting point is 00:47:33 if he's going to be able to pivot now at this late stage in his career, the way he has pivoted for the last two decades going from, whether it's superstar receiver, two tight ends, heavy on the running backs, heavy on the slot receivers. He's constantly evolved. I don't know at this stage if Belichick has anything left to evolve into. I know we've put him on the hot seat, Boston Media, and the show. I just, you kind of sort of wonder,
Starting point is 00:48:00 is this the swan song for Belichick? and now Andy Reed and Mahomes take over and kind of wreck the league. Alex, you're nodding your head. I feel like you kind of agree with me here. It's that time. We've seen it. Just what Bill has not been able to do once Tom Brady left. Like Tom Brady left, got a Super Bowl.
Starting point is 00:48:16 We know who's the goat. They were a duo. They did their best work when they were together, and they're not together anymore. And it is Patrick Mahom and Andy Reid's time. I would agree. I mean, unfortunately, as a judge fan, maybe.
Starting point is 00:48:32 It is that time. It doesn't matter. They're the perfect combo. They complement each other so perfectly. And you kind of got a behind the scenes look at that on the Netflix show quarterback. We've never seen a Rogers Mahomes postseason showdown. Maybe that's coming up in the playoffs. All right. Coming up next on the herd, where Jason was right, where Jason was wrong.
