Starting point is 00:00:00 This is an I-Heart podcast. Guaranteed Human. Another podcast from some SNL, late-night comedy guy, not quite. Unhumor me with Robert Smygel and friends. Me and hilarious guests from Bob Odenkirk to David Letterman help make you funnier. This week, my guest, SNL's Mikey Day and head writer, Streeter Seidel, help an a cappella band with their between songs banter.
Starting point is 00:00:23 Where does your group perform? We do some retirement homes. Those people are starving for banter. Listen to humor me with Robert Smigel and friends on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Imagine an Olympics where doping is not only legal, but encouraged. It's the enhanced games. Some call it grotesque.
Starting point is 00:00:42 Others say it's unleashing human potential. Either way, the podcast's Superhuman documented it all, embedded in the games and with the athletes for a full year. Within probably 10 days, I'd put on 10 pounds. I was having trouble stopping the muscle growth. Listen to Superhuman on the IHard Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. A win is a win. A win is a win.
Starting point is 00:01:07 I don't care what I'm saying. Yep, that's me, Clifford Taylor the 4th. You might have seen the skits, my basketball and college football journey, or my career in sports media. Well, now I'm bringing all of that excitement to my brand new podcast, The Clifford Show. This is a place for raw, unfilled conversations with athletes, creators, and voices that not only deserve to be heard, but the show. celebrated. So let's get to it. Listen to the Clifford show on the IHeard Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcast. And for more behind the scenes, follow at Clifford and at TikTok's podcast network on TikTok. Thanks for listening to The Heard podcast. Be sure to catch us live every weekday on Fox Sports
Starting point is 00:01:45 Radio in noon to 3 Eastern 9 a.m. to noon Pacific. Find your local station for the herd at Fox Sports Radio.com or stream us live every day on the IHeart Radio app by searching Fox Sports Radio or S.R. Now let's get this party started. You're listening to Fox Sports Radio. Welcome to the herd. It is Tuesday, ladies and gentlemen, Jason McIntyre in for Colin Cowherd.
Starting point is 00:02:13 It is a massive Tuesday. I know it's July and not usually a lot of stuff happening. We got breaking news all over the place. Not all of it good. We want to send an early shout out to Brony James. We're recovering in the hospital. We will get to that later. Alex will have it.
Starting point is 00:02:28 Alex, this is one of the first. of those mornings where there's so much going on in sports. Very exciting time to be here. Yeah. I mean, you have a lot of veterans reporting to training camp today. So a lot of big news there in the NFL. As you mentioned, Brani, like just all of our thoughts and prayers going out to LeBron and his family and Brony and everyone there. It's just so much happened this morning. We will have updates on LeBron's oldest son as they come in. We're going to start the show with some positive news. It is very exciting when two sides, kind of bickering in the news, bickering in the media. They come together amicably and everything's sorted out and it's all kumbaya
Starting point is 00:03:04 and Seekwon Barkley is going to start with the New York Giants in training camp this week. Both sides came to a rare agreement. Ladies and gentlemen, this is kind of stunning to me. I was not aware of this, but recently within the last few hours, Seekoine Barclay and the Giants have agreed to a new deal. He did not sign the franchise tag, which would have paid him $10 million. He was able to negotiate a deal where he was. he's getting an extra $900,000, depending on how you want to work it out. According to James Palmer, NFL Network, Sequin is the first player to receive the franchise tag
Starting point is 00:03:40 and then sign a modified one-year deal since 1994, extremely rare. But I kind of want to take you through it here because there's a couple permutations of what may or may not have happened. I like to look at this as a win for Sequin Barclay. It's a win-win for both sides. But from my point of view, I believe the Giants, You know, one of these Blue Blood franchises, they don't like negative news. I mean, nobody really does.
Starting point is 00:04:03 But the Giants in particular, Colin has banged on this drum a lot. And that they wanted the Daniel Jones thing. Hey, we got to sign them. The owners kind of pushed for that. And I do believe the owners have seen, man, there's a lot of negativity swirling around Sequin Barclay. And did they possibly, the Giants, get spooked when Barclay went on a podcast recently and said, hey, I might sit out the first week.
Starting point is 00:04:24 And who knows how much longer? I don't want to do that. but I don't like how this is playing out. I may have to miss some time. And maybe the Giants front office is like, guys, this running back Zoom call that Sequin's participating in, just not a great look. Are guys at the forefront?
Starting point is 00:04:40 And oh, by the way, as McIntyre pointed out yesterday on the herd, boy, this early schedule stuff, you know what, let's just squash this, let's meet with Barclay, let's hammer out an agreement. And really, you know, these owners, these guys are billionaires. They're extremely wealthy. it's very easy for them to find a couple extra bucks and make Sequin Barclay happy. And now you get him into training camp and everything's good.
Starting point is 00:05:03 Remember, yesterday we talked about it. The leader of the defense, Xavier McKinney, totally was understanding if Sequin was not going to show up for camp. You rarely hear that. We heard Devante Adams say, hey, if we're going to accomplish anything in Vegas, we need Josh Jacobs in here. But the Giants were singing a different tune because Sequan is loved in that locker room. And this is a huge win, not only for Barclay. but the Giants as well. I do want to point something out. Yesterday I hammered the schedule and said, boy, this is looking bleak if Saquan Berkeley doesn't show up. They just do not have a diverse
Starting point is 00:05:35 offense without him. Daniel Jones will look extremely limited. So I drill down this morning on the stats. Are you guys ready for this? Are you ready? Last year when Barclay had more than 15 carries in a game, the New York Giants were 7-1-1. Feed your beast. This was about Berkeley. It's not as much about Daniel Jones. Barkley is one of the better running backs in the league. I know we didn't get Christian McCaffrey money. He's not going to get Derek Henry money. But when you look at Barclay's body of work, he's a winning player for this franchise that has not done a lot of winning in the last decade. Now, real quick, what does this mean for other running backs in the league who were on that call? The Austin Ecclors of the world, the Josh Jacobs, the unsigned Fournette and Kareem Hunt
Starting point is 00:06:18 and Ezekiel Elliott. Doesn't mean a lot. You know, Sequin Barclay had some leverage in that he's a really good player. He's still in his prime. And the Giants' offense needs him. We talked about Levi-on-Bell. Remember when he decided to sit out over the tag in Pittsburgh? They didn't really need Levion Bell. They had an embarrassment of riches on offense, a great offensive line.
Starting point is 00:06:40 The Giants have nothing. I mean, I know they signed overpaid for Darren Waller, who is going to help the offense a little bit. But Barclay is what really makes his team go. Brian Dable, Daniel Jones, Barclay. all in the fold. The arrow's pointing up for the Giants, but not that high up. This is not a playoff team. All right, I want to pivot to the NBA where there is more breaking news, and this one is a bit staggering. It's going to take a moment for your mind to wrap around this new contract
Starting point is 00:07:09 for Jalen Brown. Within the last hour, Jalen Brown has agreed to the richest contract in NBA history. What you see on the screen is not incorrect. Five years, three hundred and four, million dollars for the two-time All-Star, Jalen Brown. Now, I'm going to tell a quick story about Brown, so I had moved out here from Pennsylvania in like 2016. And of course, you know, you go to a new area. I like to play sports. So I go to the gym, start playing some pickup. And the guys at the gym would see me on Speak for Yourself, which is what it was called back in 2016. And they would start to talk, oh, you're on TV. You're talking about sports. And I met a trainer at the gym who trained NBA players and prospects. And he said, hey, Jay, I got a guy coming in here.
Starting point is 00:07:52 He's going to be awesome. You got to come check him out. His name is Jalen Brown. I'm like, Jalen Brown. I don't know. Pack 12, he plays for Cal. Okay. So I look him up.
Starting point is 00:07:59 He has 14 points a game, but highly acclaimed high school athlete, I believe in Georgia. And I decided to watch Jalen Brown's NCAA tournament game. They were playing Hawaii. Cal was in the first round. And I had to go pull up the stats because it was a pretty forgettable game.
Starting point is 00:08:15 Jalen Brown was in foul trouble, played 17 minutes, okay? Four points, seven turnovers, one of six shooting. and Hawaii beat Cal, a bit of an upset. And so I see my guy, and I'm like, okay, well, I get it. He's going to hype his guy.
Starting point is 00:08:28 And he's like, no, Jay, trust me. Come in and watch this guy. He's going to be working out. The clippers are going to be here. They're very interested. Other teams are going to be here. You can't come in the gym, but you can watch from the windows. So I go and check it out, and I'm like, okay, Jailen Brown, this guy looks pretty good.
Starting point is 00:08:42 And then he comes into the NBA, and he's a very good player. Dailen Brown's solid. And he's clearly the second banana to Jason Tatum. and he goes on to get all NBA this year. And now he signs his contract. And it's significantly more than what Nicola Yokic signed for last July. And I'm not one to look in somebody's pockets, but all of a sudden some people who know the NBA contract landscape,
Starting point is 00:09:09 they're posting what these salaries are going to be for Jalen Brown here in the next five years. Folks, Jalen Brown, I'll repeat, two-time All-Star, not the best player on his team. it's going to be making $69 million in the final year of his contract. Shout out to Jalen Brown. Congratulations. You're a great basketball player. I'm happy for you.
Starting point is 00:09:28 You earned it. But if you want to zoom out for a moment and look at the macro implications of this, folks, Jalen Brown ain't the best player on his team, and he's going to be making close to $70 million a season. What's going to happen when NBA fans see these growing contracts, and then they see guys load managing, you pay to go to see Jalen Brown and Jason Tatum in February and they're sitting out. And you're like, wait a minute, this guy's making $69 million and he's just sitting out?
Starting point is 00:09:58 That's not right. How is he making that much money? And you know fans are going to get worked up about this. And as I was texting a certain NBA person today before the show, I got this in response. Hey, Jason, do you know the name John Conkak? And I was like, wait a minute. That guy from the 1980s, he's like, remember his contract? and I instantly remembered it.
Starting point is 00:10:19 Now, old NBA fans will remember this. Probably not the Youngbloods. So there was a player on the Atlanta Hawks named John Contact, and he was like a seven-footer, and he was a middling player, six points a game. And the Detroit Pistons were trying to steal him from the Hawks, and the Hawks had to pay up to keep him, and he got a six-year, $13.5 million contract.
Starting point is 00:10:42 And at the time, I know that doesn't sound like a lot, but he was paid in the neighborhood of Magic Johnson, Michael Jordan, Larry Bird. Sports Illustrated did a huge article on this guy's contract, and they started nicknaming him John Contract, because he was so overpaid and he wasn't worth it. And it was the beginning of this bad period in the NBA. Well, all these middling players were going to make tons of money.
Starting point is 00:11:06 And what happens next, of course, the wealthier player, Michael Jordan started to ascend and started making a lot of money. But we've seen this before. That's the bottom line. Not superstar players. and guys, I could drop my top 15 players in the league. Jalen Brown is a good player. He's not a top 15 guy in the league.
Starting point is 00:11:23 He may perform in that neighborhood sometimes. We saw him play very well. He was, for a moment, Boston's best player in the NBA finals two years ago. His Tatum was struggling, kind of worn down, and Wiggins was locking him up. Brown was really not carrying Boston, but he was their best player for a few games early in that series. And we've seen this before where the NBA,
Starting point is 00:11:44 everybody gets all huffy. you know, social media, they hate to see these NBA players making a lot of money. Oh, Jalen Brown doesn't deserve it. Listen, you guys know how markets work, okay? You're aware that the NBA salary cap keeps going up, team evaluations keep going up. NBA owners are printing money. And they're not hoarding it for themselves. They're paying the players. Damia Lillard's contract was allegedly difficult to move because he's making, oh my gosh, Damien Lillard's going to be making $55, $60 million. He's going to be $35.
Starting point is 00:12:16 He doesn't even want a championship. Listen, this is where we're headed. We're now headed into a new NBA where it's stars making big, big bucks, and then the middle class is getting thinned out, and then a lot of guys are on minimum contracts. We're going to talk about it later in the show. Austin Rivers, who was a really good player in high school,
Starting point is 00:12:36 went to Duke, a solid player. He's now chirping up about how the middle class is getting thin out. And when you look at the Celtics, how they're built. I mean, Porzingis is making over 30 million. Tatum's making over 30 million. Brown's making over 30 million. And pretty soon they're going to have to cut out those middle class players or they're going to have to pay a massive salary tax bill. The NBA is rapidly evolving, I think in a good way, not a great way. And we'll get into it more later in the show. But his Jaylon Brown contract is going to open up a lot of eyes. Because guess what? Just as quarterbacks in the NFL constantly are making more. A few years ago,
Starting point is 00:13:11 Dak Prescott. Dak Prescott got a massive contract and he had won one playoff game. Cowboys are going to pay the price for that soon. We'll talk about that here in the next segment. But let's not overreact to Jalen Brown's contract. I will understand if some fans are ticked off that he's going to be making $70 million in a few years and he's sitting out 10 games to load manage. I can understand the frustration.
Starting point is 00:13:33 But at the same time, Jalen Brown's going to look at you guys and be like, hey, man, this is what the market says I'm worth. If the Celtics did not want to pay me, you know what? somebody else Charlotte would have stepped up or Orlando someone would have stepped up and paid me because that's just how the system works. Don't hate the player guys. Hate the game, right? Alex Curry, you got to love what's happening in the NBA. I applaud players getting paid. I'm all for it, whether it's Saquan Barkley getting a little bit extra money, Jalen Brown getting his cheddar. I love to see it. You have to remember there is such a small window for these
Starting point is 00:14:03 athletes to get their money and to get it now. You never know what's going to happen. Injuries happen. But in this situation, you got to give it up for his agent. That is absolutely incredible to get this kind of contract. As you mentioned, not even necessarily being the number one guy on the team. Yeah, unbelievable. All right, we got a big, big show. Obviously, we'll have updates on the Bronze Sun as we get them. But coming up next, should Dak Prescott be in the Cowboys' long-term plans?
Starting point is 00:14:26 I got some numbers that do not look great for Dak. Also, yesterday we did the AFC tiers. Today, I break down the NFC. All that coming up today on The Herd. Be sure to catch live editions of The Herd, Weekdays in noon Eastern, 9 a.m. on Fox Sports Radio, FS1, and the IHard Radio app. Imagine an Olympics where doping is not only legal but encouraged. Seriously, see terms and check it out for yourself at discover.com slash match. So yesterday, after the show, you know, I'm doing it. a once over on how I did and going through some stuff and looking for ideas for the next day. No rest for the weary, right? And I stumbled upon some Dallas Cowboys stuff that is a little troubling.
Starting point is 00:17:21 I want to start here. So in 2021, Dak Prescott signed a lucrative contract. Four years, $160 million, $126 million guaranteed. At the time, I was like, whoa, Dak Prescott has one playoff win. What are we doing here? really? 126 mil guarantee. Okay, you're locked in. And you knew that when you give the quarterback that much money, he's no longer on his rookie deal, you've got to make sacrifices elsewhere. So remember, March 20 and 21, Dak gets his deal. March 20 of 22. One year later, Amari Cooper, adios. See you.
Starting point is 00:17:55 Up to Cleveland. One year after that, March 2023, Zecchio Elliott. Peace. See you later. got to pay the Piper when you pay Dak Prescott. So let's spin it forward, shall we? Okay? This is a team that last year was 12 and 5. I got a buddy who I respect a lot. He does these Vegas contests with me. He has Dallas in the Super Bowl. He has got him at 13 and 4.
Starting point is 00:18:20 And I'm like, what am I missing here with the Cowboys? And I look and they got a good roster. Things are looking up. But I bring up the Dak Prescott question for a couple points. So number one, they've lost, the playoffs the last two years to the San Francisco 49ers. Once at home, remember the brutal ending where Dak, like, quarterback snuck, sneaked up the middle and had slid and they ran out of time.
Starting point is 00:18:46 That was a bad loss. Then you had the loss last year in San Francisco. Once again, Dak not performing great. I know quarterback wins are not a stat, but Dak lost the game head-to-head to Jimmy Garapolo and Brock Purdy to inferior quarterbacks who make a lot less money, especially Purdy. So, are you seeing where I'm going here? Are you adding this up? Jerry Jones is now 80.
Starting point is 00:19:07 He has been uncharacteristically quiet this offseason. And I think my guess would be a lot of that had to do with Zeke because him and Zeke were tight. And, you know, he loved Zeke. They overpaid him to stay on the second contract. And now he's gone and he's unemployed. And I think that hurt, that kind of wounded Jerry because that was his guy. And you know who his other guy is. Number four, Dak Prescott.
Starting point is 00:19:30 So they had to cut Amari Cooper, then they had to drop Ezekiel Elliott, and then something interesting happened this offseason after Zeke. Kellan Moore, the offensive coordinator, was like, oh, they parted ways. You know, you know, that's code for, you ain't got to go home, but you got to get up out of here. And my favorite quote of the summer from any coach, I got to find it from McCarthy, who essentially said, Kellyn Moore, he wanted to put up points and light up the score board. I want to run the ball and rest my defense. Okay. We're in an offensive era. Look at the most, look at the fastest teams, the most pass-happy teams. They're the best teams.
Starting point is 00:20:13 Kansas City Chiefs pass-happy. Eagles are pass-first. Look at all the successful teams. They pass first. McCarthy wants to go back to the Stone Age. I want to run the ball. You know, that's also code for I don't trust Dak Prescott, who led the league in interceptions last year and had six games with two interceptions. Six. So you got Amari Cooper out. Zeke out. Offensive coordinator out. We want to run the football. We want to win with defense. Do you guys see where this is headed? If the Dallas Cowboys underachieve this year, and I know some people, I got a buddy, gambles a lot. He likes the Cowboys. And some of these other analytics guys love the Cowboys. Well, Jason, Dak was one of these extreme quarterbacks. He was either extremely good
Starting point is 00:20:57 or extremely bad. Ladies and I need to point this out. A couple of the quarterbacks, the Cowboys beat last year with this mighty defense that everybody loves. Josh Dobbs, Gardner Minchew, who, by the way, put 34 points on the board when he was a backup with the Eagles. Davis Mills. They beat Davis Mills.
Starting point is 00:21:15 And Matt Ryan in like a 54 to 20 bloodbath. So you're beating a lot of bad quarterbacks. And as if this wasn't good enough, as if Dallas didn't have like a Dak Prescott salary problem. By the way, his cap hit jumps to astronomical figures next year. Did you hear who allegedly missed the flight to Oxnard, according to pro football talk? Zach Martin, great offensive linemen for the Cowboys. Unhappy with his contract because he's not guaranteed beyond this year,
Starting point is 00:21:43 and he is now thinking about showing up late to training camp. And oh, by the way, Trevion Diggs. Trayvon Diggs. He's not happy either. He's now talking to Des Bryant about how to negotiate with the Cowboys. okay, Des Bryant. So these are some big names. Diggs, very good cornerback for them.
Starting point is 00:22:03 He only graded out as the 42nd best corner in the league last year according to Pro Football Focus. And I didn't think he was great against number ones. So they brought on Stefan Gilmore, who turned 33 here in a minute. He has been very good in his career. We'll see how he does as a number one. They got to pay Diggs or they got to extend Diggs. They got to extend C.D. Lamb.
Starting point is 00:22:21 They just tagged Tony Pollard. And they're going to have to pay Michael Parsons, who's maybe the best defensive player in the league. They got a lot of people to pay, a lot of mouths to feed, as they say. Folks, if you add all of this up for Dallas, there is one guy that they can move on from and keep all these other guys. And they can then go after the model of the team that has knocked them out of the playoffs the last two years, the San Francisco 49ers,
Starting point is 00:22:47 who have this interesting cycle going on where, hey, we're not going to pay our quarterback, but we're going to be sick everywhere else. Our offensive line's going to be nasty, defensive line. we're going to have a great team. Playmakers everywhere. And you have to start to wonder, is this Dak Prescott's final season in Dallas with what lies ahead and who they have to pay? How many more years of DAC not delivering in the playoffs can Dallas handle? Like, I don't really care that you beat up on Tampa last year. They were a sinking ship all season. It shouldn't have even been in the playoffs, you know? Don't really count that as like a great win.
Starting point is 00:23:23 It was a win in the playoffs. I get it. And the NFC's not. great this year. And a lot of people say the Cowboys are maybe the third best team in the NFC. That's all good and well. But what happens when they go from a high-octane offense with Kellynne Moore, who was pass-happy, always forcing the issue, forcing tempo. And now McCarthy wants to slow it down. It's almost as if Dallas is having an identity crisis on offense. What do we want to be? Do we want to be pass-happy like the rest of the league? Well, you got cooks and you got CD Lamb, two really good talents on the outside. Cooks might be a little older, but we got talent there.
Starting point is 00:23:59 They lost Dalton Shultz, the tight end. Is this going to be a throwback Dallas team where all of a sudden three yards in a cloud of dust? And oh, by the way, I did look at a Tony Pollard. I loved Tony Pollard last year. Help me win a fantasy football championship. Tony Pollard ain't a bell cow guys. He's coming off a major injury, pretty gruesome injury in that Niners game.
Starting point is 00:24:18 And now all of a sudden he's the guy? I was trying to look at the Dallas depth chart. I find it hard to believe that Deuce Vaughn is going to be the backup in Dallas. He's like a five, seven tiny little running back. So now you have smaller running backs and you want to ground and pound? Maybe I'm missing something. But this McCarthy situation, it don't look good with Dak Press guys. And as my final point, I will say for the gamblers out there,
Starting point is 00:24:42 have you looked to see who is the coach most likely to be fired first with the best odds? I mean, you can shop around. But Mike McCarthy is at the top of some of those gambling lists. So now we got Mike McCarthy possibly getting fired. We got an OC who wants to run the football with Brian Schottenheimer. We got Dak making a lot of money. We got Diggs chirping. We got Zach Martin chirping.
Starting point is 00:25:05 We got to find money for CD. We got to find money for Michael Parsons. Folks, that Dallas window, that Super Bowl window, it's about to slam shut. Alex Curry with the news. No, no, no, no. Turn on the news. This is the herd line news. Well, J-MAC, Shohayotani Watch continues as the MLB trade deadline is now officially one
Starting point is 00:25:25 week away. MLB.com's John Morosi is reporting that the Orioles and Diamondbacks have both inquired about potential Otani trades. Morosi also noted that the Angels' internal discussions are still ongoing and likely won't make a final decision until after this weekend. Now remember, the Angels are playing Detroit and the Blue Jays this week. They are currently four and a half games out of a wild card spot behind New York and Boston and Otani pitches on Friday in Toronto. Now, I also agree, I don't think the Angels are going to make any. decisions until after these two series to see where they're at and see if they are maybe a little closer to that wild card spot or within reach to that wild card spot. But as this article mentions,
Starting point is 00:26:06 the Orioles and Diamondbacks both have a lot of young talent. They have the ability to make a trade. They're both in a position to get to the postseason right now. The O's are first in the AL East just jumped Tampa Bay. That's wild, isn't it? And then Arizona is second in the NOS just behind the Dodgers. But this is something that you also have to consider. Are you willing to give up this much young talent for a potential rental? Do you see Otani signing with you once he becomes a free agent next season? So you're going to be giving up a lot to try to maybe just get to the World Series,
Starting point is 00:26:44 stay in the playoff hunt this season. So some people might say that's worth it if you can get there and you think you have the potential to win with him. But it's also a very a price. see rental. Because can they actually afford the talks are he's going to be close to $700 million possibly? So A, can you afford and B, do you think he's actually going to want to end up with you once he has the decision when he's a free agent? So how much of this, Alex, do you think is Baltimore appeasing fans? Hey, look, we're all in guys. I know we've been awful for a wobble.
Starting point is 00:27:18 We're in the mix for Otani. Just a show of we want to compete. They need to do something. Baltimore definitely needs help. pitching and it would be great if they had another hitter there you get you get both of that in otani you have the home run leading power hitter and a potential one-two in your starting rotation i don't know if they're going to go for it i don't see otani ending up in baltimore once he's a free agent um according to one story here i'm looking at the orioles have one of the best farm systems in baseball and the number one prospect yeah they're not giving up the number one prospect on a rental. Well, that's, that's what you also have to consider.
Starting point is 00:27:56 No. Like, you only do that if you know or there's conversations that you think you can keep him once he's a free agent. Huh. Yeah, this is, we're, we're a week countdown. For the longest time, everybody's been saying he's going to stay on the West Coast or maybe Mets, probably not the Yankees, and now we hear Baltimore and Arizona. These are just two teams that have a lot of young talent that would make it enticing, almost an offer that you can't refer. fuse if they come to the Angels with four or five guys. Here you go. Major League ready player, top prospects.
Starting point is 00:28:33 That's the only way this would happen. But yeah, we're not, if this happens, this is going to be like a Monday, Tuesday, right before the trade deadline situation. So if I'm the Angels, I love leaking this because it's a memo to the Yankees and the Dodgers and anyone else. You see these teams with farm systems? That's what we want. Start to ante up.
Starting point is 00:28:53 and then come talk to us. So I think this is a good leak. Maybe Ardi Moranio is smarter than we thought, huh? I still don't know if they're going to move him, even though they probably should. This is going to, like I said, it's going to come down to Monday or Tuesday right before the trade deadline. All right, let's move on to the NFL. Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs are getting geared up to defend their Super Bowl title, a feat that hasn't been done since the Patriots in 2005.
Starting point is 00:29:17 And an interview with CBS Sports, Mahomes was asked about whether or not he's ready to categorize his Kansas City. team as a dynasty. I think we're the beginning of one. I think in dynasties, I always say you've got to win three. And our job is to do whatever we can to win as many as we can and not have any regrets. We step up the field. And I think if we keep the mentality that we have, then we can look back at the end of our career and then we can decide if we're a dynasty or not.
Starting point is 00:29:41 I 100% agree with Patrick Mahomes. We had this conversation a week or two ago about what do you consider a dynasty. I said three plus championships. you and my other co-host, Ben Verlander, both said two, potentially. Now, I think the Chiefs are the closest right now in the NFL of a team that we have to a dynasty. They have the two most important pieces locked in in place with Patrick Mahomes and Andy Reid. But just to go back to your you thinking that two might be a dynasty, do you think Eli's Giants or Ben Steelers were a dynasty when they only won two Super Bowls?
Starting point is 00:30:17 Um, how many, I don't know how many years apart the Giants was. It was what, three? So yours is it has to be. Okay, so, yeah, I get you, sort of pin me down. I am. I guess I would go. I am strong with three or more championships to be considered a dynasty across any sport. And Patrick Mahomes, one of the best of the game right now, also said that about himself.
Starting point is 00:30:42 Have been to the Super Bowl three times in four years and they won two. They're not a dynasty yet. They're close. So for you just getting to the finals No, you have to win. It is such a high praise to be called a dynasty, so it should have high expectations to get there and to be considered a dynasty.
Starting point is 00:31:03 You don't get a participation trophy just for showing up and being there. You got to win it. You got to get there. Then you have to win it to be considered a dynasty. I mean, how many teams... That's why it's hard. How many teams...
Starting point is 00:31:15 You don't have a ton. have never been to the Super Bowl in the last 20 years. I would at least 10 teams have not even been to the Super Bowl. So for me, like the Warriors Dynasty, right? They won it in 15, lost in 16, and then won in 17 and 18. So they won three and four years. That's a dynasty for you? Oh, yeah.
Starting point is 00:31:33 Well, they won three. That's a dynasty. So three and four years. It doesn't have to be three straight for you. No. No. Patriots for sure. So before the Patriots dynasty, I guess the last one would be
Starting point is 00:31:45 the cowboys in the mid-90s? How many did they win? Yeah. Akeman, Emmett, Irvin. Before them, the 49ers. The bills definitely were not a dynasty. Never won one, but they did get there. No, you got to win three.
Starting point is 00:32:04 So we're just giving nothing to, we're just only championships. You heard it from Mahomes himself. You heard it from the Holmes. Let's ask Brock Purdy what he thinks. No. You're asking the reigning Super Bowl champ who is in the mid- In the midst of a dynasty. You can say that.
Starting point is 00:32:19 They're in the midst of a dynasty. They are that next team, but they're not there yet. They're in the midst of a dynasty. They're not there yet, though. The middle of a dynasty. No, they are closed. They are... We're going to have to ask everybody again.
Starting point is 00:32:33 Do you agree with Patrick Mahomes and me, or do you agree with J-Mack? Is it two or is it three-plus to be considered a dynasty? I love that we're still going on this. Let's get to our next story. Obj has returned to the field for the first time since tearing his ACL in the Super Bowl with the Rams after signing with the Ravens this off season, the Star Wide Receiver talked about how much it means to be back out there. Excited. You know, I'm excited. It's been a long time that I had to sit out and watch other people
Starting point is 00:33:02 and not get the play. So I've been waiting for this moment for a long time. I think I've always been like this. I've always been motivated. I've always been looking and be great. So, you know, I think at the end of that, my story would be about resilience. I've just been able to bounce back time after time. It's been about a year and a half since he's played a football game, but he was a huge piece of that Rams offense and getting them to the Super Bowl and winning a Super Bowl. So if he can be a fraction of what he was with the Rams,
Starting point is 00:33:36 plus with the new look Ravens offense, they has Zay Flowers, a wide receiver that he took in the first round, the new offensive coordinator, OBJ, What do you think this Ravens offense is going to look like? Didn't he have a good Super Bowl before the injury? A couple catches? Yes. That's what I'm saying.
Starting point is 00:33:54 He was a big piece and a big reason, not only that they got there, that they were able to win the Super Bowl. So it has this. Is this the best quarterback he's ever played with? He played with, I think, Eli Manning for five minutes? Did he or no? Or is Manning retired?
Starting point is 00:34:08 Yes, he did play with Eli. Then he played with Stafford, Baker Mayfield, and now Lamar Jackson. They're all different. Lamar's the only one with an MVP. Yeah. Stafford did win a Super Bowl. Dynamic.
Starting point is 00:34:23 We're going to have to see. Do they have the chemistry? I think it all comes down to chemistry. Like you can have a great quarterback and a great wide receiver, but do they have that chemistry together? Kind of like how we saw Stafford and Cup. We all heard that their first year, they spent every single moment together.
Starting point is 00:34:38 They were eating breakfast together. They were at their meetings together. You just have to have a certain kind of chemistry between the quarterback and wide receiver, I think there's definitely a lot of potential there. Do you do fantasy football, Alex? I do. Do you think you'll draft OBJ?
Starting point is 00:34:52 Take a flyer or no? It depends. Depends where I am in the lineup. That's a fair point. Yeah. I just wonder, like, who do you take from that receiving group on fan? Like, Bateman is coming off the injury. He's a good player, but like, Zay.
Starting point is 00:35:07 Do you take the risk on the young guys? Well, Mark Andrews is probably the guy, the tight end. but they got a good running back in Dobbins and Lamar's going to run. So you're feeling good about this, Ravens' offense. I go back and forth like there's a chance they're, you know, in the Super Bowl for the AFC. They're good.
Starting point is 00:35:23 What? Yeah, why not? This is, I mean, the hot take J-Mack. They were first, I think, in the division with the Bengals. Yep. Before, what's his name? Lamar goes down. Yep.
Starting point is 00:35:35 Like, so if everyone can say healthy, I mean, that's like the story of every single team. The defense is the question. but they got a great coach in Harbaugh. Yeah. Like who's a better coach? Harbaugh or the Bengals head coach? Zach Taylor.
Starting point is 00:35:48 A Harbaugh, come on. Harba's one of the best coaches in the league. Yeah. Bengals, they're just red hot right now. And they have the experience of getting deep into the postseason and getting to the Super Bowl. So you got to see a full healthy season from everybody. There's just so much sports stuff banging around in my head.
Starting point is 00:36:08 Didn't they played in the playoffs? Bengals and Ravens last year. And it was close. And then didn't Huntley throw like a 99-yard pitch. No, no, he did not. Fumble. It was a fumble. That's right. That was a close game without Lamar Jackson. Without Odell.
Starting point is 00:36:21 Without Zay Flowers. We'll see. It's a rookie. But like, I don't know, man. Let's not sleep on this Raven seat. File it away. They're going to be good. All right. I'll take that. Alex with the news. Well, that's the news. And thanks for stopping by.
Starting point is 00:36:36 The Heard Lye News. Coming up next, another concerning report about Jordan Love in Green Bay. my gosh, it won't stop. And then coming up after that, we're also going to talk about Damian Lillers' trade request, possibly hurting the NBA. Don't go anywhere. It's The Herd.

Tomorrow on Fox, the 23 FIFA Women's World Cup continues as Alex Morgan and Megan Rapino lead the U.S.
Starting point is 00:39:35 against the Netherlands. Coverage begins Wednesday at 7 Eastern with kickoff at 9 p.m. Eastern on Fox and the Fox Sports app. Yeah, I like the U.S. in that one, Alex. I mean, this is a rematch from the 2019 finals where U.S. won back-to-back World Cup titles. So it's a win in advance.
Starting point is 00:40:00 You get out of the group state, you win the group if you win this match. I'll go 1-0 U.S. I mean, I have some concerns after they, I know they outshot Vietnam 28-0, but I didn't think they were overwhelmingly impressive, but it was the first game, a lot of new faces.
Starting point is 00:40:16 I'm hoping that there is better chemistry right out of the gates. Obviously, it was a completely different game playing Vietnam. They just came out really chippy, really aggressive, taking them down, lots of fouls. There's going to be a little obviously chip on your shoulder for Netherlands
Starting point is 00:40:32 as USA knocked them out and won the World Cup in the finals last World Cup. But this is going to be good. This is going to be a great one. I think it's the first time that they've two finalists from the previous tournament meet in the group stage. So that's also, it's going to be feisty.
Starting point is 00:40:53 All right. Also feisty, I found this quote kind of troubling. So I'm not a huge Jordan love guy. I believe he led the country in interceptions before he was drafted in the first round by the Packers. And he's been sitting there behind Aaron Rogers for a while, and he has, I believe, 83 pass attempts in his career. And the Packers president is like maybe the eighth person in Green Bay to preach patience for Jordan Love. The Packers President said yesterday,
Starting point is 00:41:24 I'll need half a season to tell about Aaron Love, Jordan Love in Green Bay. Half a season. He's been there for three years. You've seen him in practice for three seasons. the offensive linemen are saying, ooh, it feels like a rebuild. Matt LaFleur, who will get to shortly, Matt LaFleur.
Starting point is 00:41:45 I got some questions. And the front office decided, yeah, let's lower the guaranteed money. Let's not pick up that fifth year option. Let's do a one-year deal. So all of a sudden he's only a $13.5 million guy next year. Less guaranteed money. Not a lot of faith. I don't want to go overboard, though, because of one thing.
Starting point is 00:42:06 The schedule for the Packers. You guys know when we talk about gambling on this show, schedule matters, Vegas matters. If there's any hope for Jordan Love, it is all contingent upon their schedule, which is absolutely staggering. They face one really, really good team in the Kansas City Chiefs. We added the win totals here. The KC chief wind total, obviously is 11.5 tops in the AFC. But look at the rest of that lineup. Jordan Love, with little experience, 83 pass attempts, comes out and faces.
Starting point is 00:42:38 a mid, as my kids like to say, a mid-Bair's defense, less than mid-Falcons defense. Saints are going to be tough. That's probably the first tough one. But then he faces the Lions, who I know everybody loves the Lions. Everybody's betting the Lions. Folks, the Lions were one of the five worst defenses in the league last year. I saw a stat from a friend that they took 65% of their offensive snaps when trailing last year
Starting point is 00:43:01 because the defense was just hemorrhaging points. Like, the Raiders in Week 5 are one of the worst teams in the league. Look at the depth chart on the Raiders. They're terrible. So I'm not a big fan of Jordan Love. I'm stunned that the Packers aren't like all in on a guy they've had in the building for three years. But they legitimately could be four and one heading heading into that buy because of the schedule. That's the only reason to like Jordan Love.
Starting point is 00:43:24 Nothing else to like about Jordan Love. Remember, this is a team that said bye to Aaron Rogers guys. Alan Lazard, peace. Randall Cobb, see ya. Robert Tanya. Adios. they're basically, they're hunkering down, they said, Aaron Jones, take a pay cut. He said, yes, sir. So now it's Aaron Jones and the big kid Dylan in the back field,
Starting point is 00:43:44 and you have to wonder how confident they are going to be throwing the ball deep down the field. I pointed this out a couple months ago. If you look at the in-game passes from Jordan Love last year, everything was short. Nothing down the field. Why? I guess we'll find out. It didn't take K.C. long to know Patrick Mahomes was that dude. I'm not comparing Jordan Love to Mahomes, but, you know, Patrick Mahomes sat out one year and was instantly in there and boom.
Starting point is 00:44:12 Jordan Love, like, oh, we'll see, we'll see about after half a season. And I quickly want to mention Matt LaFloor for a moment. A lot of guys like to call him a genius because he started 13 and 4, 13 and 3, 13 and 4. Matt LaFleur's a genius, of course. Is he? asking an honest question. I don't know how good Matt LaFleur is. I don't think anybody can.
Starting point is 00:44:40 Aaron Rogers last year sacked back a little bit. He didn't vibe with the receivers. It was the ugly tension with the front office. But why didn't LaFleur swoop in and save the day? Could it be because it was the Aaron Rogers show the last four years? And LaFleur was essentially his caddy? I don't know.
Starting point is 00:44:59 Only Aaron Rogers and LaFleur know that. Well, the pressure's really on the floor now. What are you going to do? do with Jordan Love when you don't have a superstar quarterback carrying you. This is the first instance I can recall since the 49ers had Joe Montana, Steve Young, and then it was like, ooh, what do we got next? Like Jeff Garcia will pull him out of the CFL. Packers are going from Brett Fav to Aaron Rogers to what's going on with Jordan Love?
Starting point is 00:45:25 I have my questions about the Packers. I'm not that optimistic, but I'm refusing to bury them in the NFC. And we'll do the NFC tiers here shortly only because of that schedule. It is really soft. And look at the rest of the quarterbacks in the NFC North. Folks, I like Justin Fields, but do we think he's good? Do we know if he's good? I mean, Jared Goff, that's Cowherd's boy.
Starting point is 00:45:49 I shouldn't say anything negative about Jared Goff, but he's not, I mean, he was like topped out last year. This was as good as he was pretty much with the Rams last year. Goff was like a top 10 quarterback with Ben Johnson, the great O.C. And they exceeded all expectations offensively. Do we think Goff's just going to do that again? And then the other quarterback in the division is Kurt Cousins, who Patrick Mahomes says is the most underrated quarterback in the league.
Starting point is 00:46:14 I defended Kirk Cousins here, I think Friday. And all of a sudden, Vikings fans love me, and everybody else is laughing. Oh, Macintar, Kirk Cousins, come on. So, like, that division, like, I don't know, is the gap between Kirk Cousins, Justin Fields, Jordan Love, Jared Goss. Is it that big? The Packers are going to be one of the more.
Starting point is 00:46:34 interesting teams in the league. Packers fans won't like where I have them in my tears coming up here in about 10 minutes. But there is nothing that says Packers are a slam dunk winner for me. I think their range of outcomes is probably in the, boy, Jordan Love stinks. What do we have here? He's bench midseason. And they're like a six or seven win team to, oh my gosh, this schedule's cake. Jordan Love is a game manager. We've got a great running game. We beat up on the dregs in this division. They don't face a team that made the playoffs, guys, until week eight, and that's at home against the Vikings. The Rams are really bad. We don't know if the Rams are going to be tanking by Thanksgiving. Honestly, I'm not bullish on the Rams at all this year. I do like the Steelers.
Starting point is 00:47:19 That's a loss. Just pencil in the loss for the Packers there. But you look at that schedule. It is extremely manageable. You close it out with Baker Mayfield in week 15, Bryce Young in week 16. At Kirk Cousins will be a little tough because Minnesota in the dome. And then against Jordan Fields at home. Like, where are the challenges? I skipped over that Daniel Jones speed bump. That's a cakewalk. Like this Packer's schedule lines up where, man, do you take a nibble of the Packers over just on the chance that the schedule's easy and the defense finally for the first time in years rises to the occasion? One thing of concern I was reading about last year running quarterbacks just befuddle.
Starting point is 00:48:00 totally confused the Packers. This year there's only two of those on the schedule. So things are lining up pretty nicely for the Packers. All right, that's one hour in the books. Alex, we will do NFC tiers next. By the way, Leonel Messi playing tonight. I wrote about the game gambling. In both our houses.
Starting point is 00:48:19 MLS should be fun. We'll do NFC tiers next. It's the herd. Don't go anywhere. Another podcast from some SNL late-night comedy guy. Not quite unhumor me. with Robert Smygel and friends, me and hilarious guests from Bob Odenkirk to David Letterman
