This is an I-Heart podcast.
Guaranteed Human.
Another podcast from some SNL, late-night comedy guy, not quite.
Unhumor me with Robert Smygel and friends.
Me and hilarious guests from Bob Odenkirk to David Letterman
help make you funnier.
This week, my guest, SNL's Mikey Day and head writer Streeter Seidel,
help an a cappella band with their between songs banter.
Where does your group perform?
We do some retirement homes.
Those people are starving for banter.
Listen to humor me with Robert Smigel
and friends on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.
On The Look Back at it podcast.
From 1979, that was a big moment for me.
84 was big to me.
I'm Sam J.
And I'm Alex English.
Each episode, we pick a year, unpack what went down, and try to make sense of how we survived it.
With our friends, fellow comedians, and favorite authors.
Like Mark Lamont Hill on the 80s.
84 was a wild year.
It was a wild year.
I don't think there's a more important year for black people.
Listen to look back at it on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.
Imagine an Olympics where doping is not only legal but encouraged.
It's the enhanced games.
Some call it grotesque.
Others say it's unleashing human potential.
Either way, the podcast's Superhuman documented it all, embedded in the games and with the athletes for a full year.
Within probably 10 days, I'd put on 10 pounds.
I was having trouble stopping the muscle grahammed.
Listen to Superhuman on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.

Now let's get this party started.
You're listening to Fox Sports Radio.
Oh, almost too much of a show today.
I feel like I'm spoiling you.
Live in Los Angeles on a Tuesday, it's the herd.
Wherever you may be, and however, you may be listening or watching.
Lots of choices.
Thanks for Megan House part of your day.
A bonanza of stuff today.
Honestly, maybe I should scale back.
I feel like you're getting ice cream for breakfast.
The show needs more broccoli and Brussels sprouts.
Vegetables for the kids.
All right, Jay Mack, we've got a lot to talk about today.
And I like the inside of players, but a lot of players play the game.
They don't necessarily watch the game or know the game.
We kind of know that.
Over the course of time, you interview players.
Some play it, some think it.
Some watch it.
Some know it.
Some just play it.
Is that fair?
I would say that's a fair assessment.
Yeah.
Yeah.
So I'll start the show today.
with the NFL top 100 list, voted on by the players exclusively.
I'm not bothered that Kirk Cousins rose 57 spots and is now ahead of Aaron Rogers.
We know that's not the case.
We know there's not a single GM in the league that thinks Cousins is better than Aaron Rogers.
But he had a big year, players look at the standings and go,
oh, Kirk is humming.
No, it's the fact that Justin Fields is ahead of Trevor Lawrence.
Players aren't watching the games.
or that DAC now is way ahead of Lamar Jackson.
So here's the thing about athletes.
NFL players are not watching Red Zone.
They're playing the games.
They're not doing deep dives on PFF or Warren Sharps' analytics.
That's what we do.
They're watching highlights.
And so if you're a highlight guy, you'll go up the chart.
And the truth is, they're watching film of the next guy they face.
A tackles watching the edge rusher.
Joey Bosa played six games last year.
Six games.
He's rated ahead of Trevor Lawrence.
They're not watching Jack's games, apparently.
Trevor Lawrence is really good, top 10 quarterback,
and led a pretty anemic franchise to the playoffs
and a win with a heroic second half comeback.
Dak missed five games.
Lamar Jackson, who's better than Dak missed five games,
and yet Lamar's injury was top.
talked about a lot more, and so he plummeted in the standings.
Well, Dak missed five games, and the Cowboys went four and one when Dak was out.
Did you watch the Ravens offense?
When Lamar was missing, it dried up.
24 points a game to 13.
Basically 50% of the offense left.
Dak left.
Cooper Rush filled in.
Cooper Rush filled in.
It was the same team.
They're not watching the games.
And it's not their job.
their job is to play the games.
Some guys play it.
Some guys play it.
Some guys watch it.
Some guys just watch their position.
But Lonzo Ball got four all-star votes.
This past year, he didn't play a single game.
Joey Bosa played six games.
The other thing is athletes, and I understand this,
tend to overvalue sheer athleticism.
If you got hops, if you got handles, if you can bust a run,
if you got speed, players love sheer athleticism overvalue it. LeBron James, one of the
smartest players of my life. One of the absolute smartest basketball players I've ever seen play,
thought Russell Westbrook would work. Westbrook's hyper-athletic. Players love a Zach Levine. He's
not a winning player. Players love people that play above the rim in the NBA basketball. They
love the dunk contest. Baseball players love the home run derby. NFL players love sheer
athleticism, it's more than that.
It's why if I was a GM, very rarely would I listen to a player's perspective.
You can get a veteran player and just go ask him.
Is he soft?
Is he tough?
What are you here in the league?
I think that has value.
The old Draymond Green guys, you can lean on, been around, who do you struggle to defend?
You can go to a great offensive player.
Hey man, who gives you fits?
I think you can go sometimes to an offensive tackle and go, hey, man, we're looking at this
rush end. How hard is he to block? I think there's value in all that stuff. But players aren't
paying attention. They're not grading and watching Warren Sharp and PFF and the Red Zone. And that is
not their job. It's why I bring athletes on the show, but we're picky, increasingly picky.
Dak and Lamar, you've got to be kidding me. Justin Fields' highlights are great. You think he's
better than Trevor Lawrence? Come on now. Joey Bosa barely played last year. But nobody watching
is Jacksonville. And you can see in these players' lists. I got nothing against Kirk Cousins.
But he rose 57 spots. Did he get that much better? No. But they got better on the
standings. And sometimes that's all it takes. So never, never tempt the football gods.
Sean Payton came out last week and ripped another coach. And the football
God said, we do not like that.
Pipe down.
Tim Patrick, wide receiver Broncos.
Monday, tears an ACL out for the year.
K.J. Hamler, another receiver, got some heart palpitation, some concern out for a while.
Karma strikes John Payton in Denver.
Also, by the way, never screw with a guy with a shaman.
Don't mess with Aaron Rogers.
Darkness retreat, changed him.
Different cat.
But I had said a couple weeks ago that I know who's going to win divisions and I know who's
going to finish fourth.
There's a lot of second and third place battles.
Jets, dolphins.
I'm going to just watch camp.
I want to watch the injuries.
I want to see how players develop.
Chargers Broncos.
I think I like the Chargers, but I want to watch camp.
And Steelers Ravens, I think.
I like the Ravens, but a lot of their players, top players, get hurt a lot outside of Mark Edwards,
the tight end, Mark Andrews. And so I want to watch camp. In those three specific battles,
your jets, dolphins, I know the bills are really good, and I know the Patriots don't have much
firepower. I want to watch the Jets and Dolphins camp games, Chargers, Broncos, Ravens Steelers.
Well, this now solidifies what I thought I was going to pick. I'm going to take the Chargers,
over the Broncos in the
AFC West. So
why? First of all, in a passing
league, two receivers
for a new coach and a quarterback that
needs to really deliver are now out.
Simultaneously,
Quentin Johnson,
Quentin Johnston, the wide receiver, the rookie
for the Chargers out of TCU,
is crushing it at camp.
So much so, the Chargers may use
Mike Williams in the slot
because Quentin Johnston
has been so good in camp.
So now it's Keenan Allen, Mike Williams,
Quentin Johnston.
They have a surplus.
And now,
what are the Broncos relying on at wide receiver
and a revamped offensive line?
Well, look at it.
Jerry Judy, never had a thousand-yard season.
Cortland Sutton, who I think is four years removed
from his best season,
and a rookie Marvin Mims from Oklahoma.
Could be good.
We don't know.
So that's the difference.
It's not a big thing.
I thought it would go down to the last couple weekends of the year.
But Quentin Johnson for the Chargers, Mike Williams, Keenan Allen, they have a good four too, by the way.
Austin Eckler, Justin Herbert.
They've got a better quarterback, a better O line, and now better weapons.
Who am I going to take?
I'm going to take the Chargers.
So this stuff matters.
Jerry Judy, we're still waiting.
Cortland Sutton, we're waiting for the play.
we saw three, four years ago and a rookie.
It matters.
Do not mess with anybody with a shaman.
Aaron Rogers and the football gods did not like what Sean Payton said.
Tempting fate.
That's all I'm saying.
But this morning, Chiefs, Chargers, Broncos, Raiders.
I feel confident about it.
And you're looking at me like I'm crazy.
What?
So Tim Patrick's out for the year and he knocked the Broncos down.
Well, Tim Patrick's really good.
He didn't play a second last year because of the ACL.
And look what happened.
Like he could argue he's their number one.
And now you become very reliant on Jerry Judy.
Who's good?
Who's good.
Yeah, Mike Williams, Keenan Allen are not just good.
They're game changers.
I did look at the Broncos depth chart.
Sean Payton brought in a couple guys from New Orleans,
who he knows well and trusts Callaway and Lil Jordan Humphrey.
I don't know how much they're going to factor in, but remember, this is a team that had a good run game last year with Javante Williams.
Like, he was a dynamic running back.
Coming off the injury.
A major injury.
Austin Eccler's not.
So outside of tight end, I got the better quarterback, the better O line, the better receivers, the cleaner running back situation today, you got the better tight ends.
I don't know.
And I also got Kellynne Moore.
So to me, in an offensive league, offense is a 16.
55-35-35 offensive league.
You got the better coach.
I got the better personnel.
Defensively, though, the Broncos are going to hang around all the games because their defense is outstanding.
All right.
Like, there isn't a unit, I don't think the Chargers have defensively at any level that's better than Denver.
Well, I think there are, I would say rush in.
Pass rush. Yeah, Bosa.
There are better.
Bosa's outstanding, obviously.
Yeah.
When he's healthy, he's great.
Linebacker's atrocious.
Well, let's slow down.
Secondary, just hemorrhaging yards.
points last year. Let's, I think they're going to be just okay. Patrick Surton, is he top three
cornerback in the NFL? Like he's, okay. His Broncos defense. In Sean Payton, I trust. Who do you
trust more at head coach, by the way? Okay, that's, that's the thing. But I also think the Saints
probably win their division and they have a defensive coach. I don't trust. I don't know what
he is. I've watched his career in the Raiders and Saints. He's winning 32% of his games or something.
I'm just saying, when I watch all these close battles for second and third, this.
This is the kind of stuff.
Two receivers out same day.
Your rival drafts a receiver and he is rolling in camp.
Like crushing it with a new OC.
It's something.
Yeah, charges are going to be dynamic.
Everything is something.
Nothing is everything.
It's something.
It's something benefit chargers today over Denver.
That's a very Aaron Rogers statement.
Well, I don't have a shaman, but I may by the end of the show.

So one of the things I think I've learned over the course of my life is don't get, you know, don't, don't
get your feet too planted. There's a great line I heard years ago. At a graduation speech,
outline your life in pencil, not pen. Be willing to move. Stuff changes fast. So I'm not a big
believer in giving a running back a second big contract. But there are exceptions to everything.
The football gods were not happy with Sean Peyton.
They punished him.
They're also not happy with Jim Ursay, who criticized one of his employees.
And what do you know?
Zach Moss, backup running back for the Colts, broke his arm yesterday.
Leverage Advantage, Jonathan Taylor.
Life takes very funny turns.
Don't go a mile deep.
Be twitchy.
We like our athletes twitchy.
You're a business person.
Be twitchy.
Be patient.
I don't like holdouts.
I said this with Saquan Barclay.
If you're great at something, go be great at it.
Stay in the game, play or butt off.
Life has a funny way of working out to your advantage.
Joe Burroughs been hurt.
Jalen Ramsey's been hurt.
Zach Moss, Tim Patrick, KJ Hamler.
Don't hold out.
Austin Echler, Sequin Barkley, Jonathan Taylor.
Go be great.
Let the world see you be great.
at something. It'll work out. Funny how it works. And there's those who argue Jay Mack was on this
side. You're not paying Anthony Richardson, the rookie quarterback for five years. They also have
Braden Smith and Quentin Nelson under contract, a rookie left tackle under contract. They have two
young receivers, Alec Pierce, the kid from Cincinnati, Josh Downs, both under contract. Their
offensive spending next year is bottom of the league. They're not spending any offense.
why not give Jonathan Taylor young, great, and healthy a deal?
I hear you.
I was on the other side because I think Anthony Richardson's going to gobble up 25% of the rush yards.
Outline your life in pencil.
Don't outline it in pen.
You never know what's going to happen.
This morning, I look at it and think, well, he is great.
And we're not paying anybody else.
And I've got three offensive linemen I don't have to worry about for four or five years.
two of my young receivers I like.
Pittman's still got a year or two.
I don't have to pay him.
Maybe we just make the move.
We're not spending any money on offense anyway.
Do we just sign Jonathan Taylor?
It doesn't have to be four years and a billion dollars.
It could be three years with a team option for a fourth.
But again, people, I am not a believer in paying running backs, a second big contract.
especially early.
But stuff changes.
What if Saquan Barkley has another great year?
So that's three great years of like the four or five he's been in the league
or the five he's been in the league in one injured year.
And Daniel Jones is what he is and doesn't grow and this is it.
All right.
You pay your star running back.
Daniel Jones you're locked into the Thomas.
You draft a couple of receivers.
Don't have to pay them.
You can talk yourself into anything.
Just be willing.
to listen and understand stuff changes.
Zach Moss got hurt.
Now what do they do?
You're not paying anybody else on offense.
They're all locked up.
You got a rookie quarterback.
Now?
I think you're the owner.
You're the GM.
You've got to have discussions.
Got to go grab a coffee in between workouts and sit down and go, all right, things changed
last night.
Just stuff to think about.
J-Mac with the news.
No, no, no, no.
Turn on the news.
This is the herd line news.
I say this all the time.
You're a pilot.
you have a flight plan. All of a sudden, you're in the middle of the flight plan and storms burst up
over the Gulf of Mexico around New Orleans. You're going to fly right into it. You're going to change
the flight plan. You're in the emergency room. Stuff changes. There's internal bleeding. You're going to
stay with what you're doing or change it. Like, you're a politician. All of a sudden, your rival
screws up. Are you going to take advantage of it or stay directly on your plan? Life changes all the
time. Be willing to change with it and ride the way.
And so, like, I think the cults this morning are like, well, crap.
Now it's a different conversation.
We lost leverage overnight.
All right.
And, you know, we get new information.
We can change our opinion.
People are yelling at me online all weekend.
I ignored most of it.
Jason, you didn't want Aaron Rogers.
Remember, you wanted Lamar Jackson.
I was like, yeah.
I saw Aaron Rogers last year.
I saw his attitude.
You know, he wasn't a great quarterback.
And he did not get along with him.
And he taught retirement every 15 minutes.
Now he's like, I'm going to play.
He's a totally different guy.
I want to give up all my trading.
I want to be unvoidable years.
You can have them.
$35 million pay cut.
Like he's talking.
Like you said, he comes out of the darkness retreat.
He's a new dude.
Nobody knew this was going to happen.
Right.
So, of course now I'm excited and I'm all aboard the Air Rochester.
Yeah, fans tend to get locked in on.
Well, you said this and my takeaway is, folks, you know, you have a 401k.
I have a 401k.
Do you not trade stocks if the CEO gets caught hanky-panky and you're like, I don't trust the company.
You're going to keep the stock to sell the stock.
that's called it.
By the way, one of the things you can do is watch what insiders do to a company in the stock market.
When the insiders, the CEO guys are selling the stock, sell the stock.
It's new information.
No matter how much you like it.
You can't be wedded to it.
Hey, by the way, so Christian McCaffrey, you were mentioning, he got a four-year $64 million extension, $38 million guarantee.
Yeah.
Why can't you go to Taylor and be like, listen, we're not giving you the CMAC deal?
But we can go three years, you know, I don't know, $48 million.
and like $28 million guaranteed,
which is less than McCaffrey,
but still really good and better than the franchise tag.
You're telling me Taylor would not go for something like that?
Yeah, I think in an ever-evolving running back market,
running backs have to say, I'm not getting four, I'm getting three,
I'm not getting what I want, I'm getting 82% of what I want.
Yeah.
That's life.
And I know everybody's going to yell, no, no, Jason, you've got to pay a receiver,
you've got to pay this.
Okay, go look at the market for receivers next year.
Do you want to do what the Jags did and overpay Christian Kirk?
like grossly overpaid Christian Kirk.
The Jags got lucky that they got Calvin Ridley,
remember because of the suspension?
Like,
it's not like all these awesome receivers are just out there you can go get and overpay.
That's not how it works.
And most free agent-wide receivers are on the market for a reason.
Exactly.
Like that is something, you know, in any industry,
if somebody's on the beach, there's generally a reason, they're on the beach.
If somebody's a free agent, there's a reason.
Nobody's given up Trent Williams.
Like that you can trade for.
him, but people are just moving off Trent Williams.
There's a reason.
He's the best tackle in 10 years.
Bill's running back injury.
Colts running back injury.
Zeke Elliott, nobody's still made a move on him.
Kareem Hunt, nobody's made a move.
Like, people just have to, there's a lot more than just black and white.
Don't pay a running back.
It doesn't work like that.
There's shades of gray.
Anyways, let's move on to Patrick Mahomes,
became the highest paid quarterback in NFL history.
And interestingly, he's now the league's seventh highest paid quarterback,
despite being far and away the best player in the game.
According to Mahomes, he's following in Tom Brady's footsteps.
I've looked at Tom's model and how he did it.
That's it.
You want to make money for yourself and your family.
You want to keep pushing the market forward for other QBs.
You don't want to be someone that they use against other players.
But at the same time, I want these other guys to get paid.
I want Chris Jones to be in camp.
I want Kelsey to always be making money.
I want everyone on the team here.
To me, it's not always about being the highest paid.
And this is, by the way, what?
separates a lot of these quarterbacks. When you're just concerned, I don't want to keep taking
shots at Baker Mayfield, but when you're posing without a shirt in front of a car and doing a
million ads, you're sending messages. You're also sending messages when you're Patrick Mahomes
and the seventh highest paid quarterback. Tim Duncan, Tom Brady, Patrick Mahomes. They're sending
messages. Guys, I'm all in for this organization. It's not just about the bag. That is a powerful
message from Duncan, Brady, and Mahomes. If Tim Duncan's not taking the max, is Tony Parker
going to leave just for money? You look silly. What you do is you put pressure on other guys.
Are you about winning? Nobody ever wants to talk about money. But if people leave the top,
to be the top show, the top team, Tyreek Hill, bragging about Miami, who won the Super Bowl?
Like, Tyreek Hill now and Mahalms, who looks better a year out?
Like, Tyreek Hill is now with a quarterback that can't stay healthy, and Mahalms double down without Tyree.
Like, there's got to be more to life than just money.
So seeing that Lamar Jackson is second, and it got ugly there with Baltimore, I can understand why he was like, I want to get paid.
He's a running quarterback.
He knows he's less effective if he has, like, a gruesome leg injury, something really bad.
he's got to get paid.
And like, you know, Collins, I kind of understand the whole, I need to get my money now because I don't know how long I'm in this league for.
NFL, not for long.
Like, I get that people want to be a little greedy and you kind of have to.
When you know your shelf life might be 10 years in the league at quarterback, but running back is like six, you know?
Running back, I get the argument.
Quarterbacks, I don't.
Yeah, like say one Berkeley.
Quarterbacks take less.
How many quarterback careers have been cut short due to injury?
I mean, really, all-time great quarterbacks cut short due to injury.
Start naming them.
I can't think of one.
Yeah, I know, by the way, Andrew Luck when he retired.
But he got six years in.
He did.
Okay, so it wasn't like it was second year.
It was six years.
There's your exception.
And by the way, he could have continued playing.
That was a choice.
Right?
It wasn't like broken leg can't move.
And I think I read that the Colts could have recouped $24 million from him when he retired.
And Jim Mersey was like, no, you meant a lot to.
the franchise, you can just keep the money.
Not a great look when you're just giving away money to Andrew Luck and you refuse to pay
the running back. Colts, they got some problems. Let's get to the Cowboys where Mike McCarthy
will be calling offensive plays this season. This is something we have been discussing for a while,
but one of the more interesting things to note about the offense is D.Ack's involvement in the
play calling. Here's what C.D. Lamb had to say about DAC.
All the offense is in Dax's hands now. It's not necessarily being called from Mike or
Kale since last year, but now it's all on deck.
Like, however he's feeling versus the coverage, if he liked the matchup, we're going to
call that play.
If he likes whatever he likes versus zone, he's going to call that play.
So technically it's all in Dax's hands.
He's very aggressive.
And the way he wants to win.
I mean, that's everybody.
And he's looking for the deep ball now.
And, man, as you see today, is up there.
So if you're not going to back up, this is a warning to everybody.
If you're not going to back up, good luck.
Well, you know, listen, I do like a great play caller.
I don't think the quarterback should be the play caller.
That's just my take.
Maybe it's because I wasn't allowed to call plays in high school.
I'm bitter.
I would rather have a great play caller.
I don't want to cause problems where there aren't problems.
But McCarthy is on record after Kellymour was jettison saying he wanted to light up the scoreboard.
I want to run the ball and rest our defense.
Okay?
So all this stuff about Dak, if he sees where the safeties are and that can throw what he wants,
McCarthy got Kellynmore out of there because he wants to run the football.
We'll see how that works out.
You know that's like 1990 stuff.
Let's run the football, round and pound.
That doesn't work in the modern NFL.
So what's Brian Schottenheimer doing, by the way, while McCarthy and Dacker?
I know.
He's the new offensive coordinator?
That'd be like, hey, you know, Jason, I really like your work, but I'm going to have somebody else do what you do.
and just stick around.
I'll just hang out.
Be a team play. Hang out.
Could you grab me a coffee here in the next segment?
Yeah, I mean, Brian Schott, Armour, why'd you take the job?
Final story here is the Niners had one of the top defenses in the league last year,
led by defensive player of the year and sack leader Nick Bosa.
But entering training camp, Bosa, holding out for a new deal,
even without their top defender in camp, GM, John Lynch, has zero concerns.
You know, we have to strike the right mix of urgency.
I don't like this.
I don't like not having one of our best players here.
We've got a really good track record that I'm proud of as a group of having our players in.
But I also understand it and understand that we're going to have to exhibit some patience
and understand that ultimately this thing will work out.
I'm very confident in that.
Their D-line is still pretty good, but Bosa changes everything.
It's amazing what a rookie quarterback salary will do to the rest of your roster.
At some point, we've got to rank the rosters here because of 49ers, I'm looking.
Looking at their depth chart.
Oh, no, it's stacked.
There's like no holes there.
They have, outside of Aaron Donald, who on the Rams starts defensively for the Niners?
Nobody.
I don't think anybody.
Ernest Jones is a very good interior linebacker for the Rams.
You could do that with the Jets.
Other than Aaron Donald, who starts for the, I mean, the Rams just don't have anybody.
The 49ers defense is stacked.
The whole offensive roster is loaded.
They're good.
Oh, no, it's a...
By the way, I know some people are wondering why we aren't talking about women's soccer yet.
We will do it later in the show.
We're still going to wait for them to try to score a goal against Portugal.
I know.
They're facing lowly Portugal right now, still have it scored.
I think it's in like the seventh overtime.
Yeah, they haven't done much offensively.
Shout out to Carly Lloyd.
Way to take him the task.
J-Mack with the news.
Well, that's the news.
And thanks for stopping by.
The Hurd-Ly News.
So, we haven't talked NBA for a while, and we don't for the next five months, but this was interesting.
According to Shams Sharanya,
the Miami Heat had been preparing a trade package for Dame, Damian Lillard,
which includes, according to Shams, three to four first round picks, second round picks,
and potentially a young player.
Now, it's also potential pick swaps.
That could be useless.
You want pick swaps from terrible teams.
Miami's not terrible.
They would also include, I would imagine Kyle Lowry in this expiring contract makes a ton of money.
You got to put a big contract.
and there, Kyle Lowry is the obvious one.
So it's going to be three to four first round picks, some second round picks,
a good young player, and Kyle Lowry.
And I think that's great for Portland and Miami.
I'm completely fine with that.
It puts pressure on the Blazers scouts.
Well, they've been pretty good.
Antfordy Simons, 24th pick.
Shaden Sharp, seventh.
They've been pretty good.
So it also works on the Blazers' time.
line. Go to the Instagram account for the Blazers this morning. They got young guys on that
and Nurkich, right? Like, we know what they're doing here. You got Scoot Henderson's 19 years old,
Shaden Sharps 20, Anthony Simons is 24. So if I can get a young player and a bunch of draft picks,
I've said this before. When you make an NBA trade and you lose the star, whatever team it is,
shack to the heat, you're going to lose the trade for the first two years.
can you win for the next six to seven after that?
That's the key to it.
The Lakers knew when they split Shaq and Kobe up,
first couple of years,
Shaq was going to win and win big.
Kobe didn't have a running mate.
They had to wait to make a deal.
So they knew for two years,
but they knew that Kobe was in better shape.
He was more committed,
didn't have a weight issue,
didn't have feet problems.
So they knew by year 3, 4, 5, 6, 7,
going forward, the Lakers felt we made the right choice.
for the first two years, Butler Damon Bam with Eric Spolstra are going to win a championship
potentially and certainly vie for it.
But Damien's now 33.
He's had some injuries.
He's a smaller player.
He'll be out of his comfort zone.
He'll be in a new franchise.
I'm sure he'll still be great.
But it's not like Portland was a championship team with him.
Didn't he average like 32 a game last year?
They were nine games from the playing game.
That's with Dame.
So if this is the package,
which is three to four first round picks, a couple of second round picks, a good young player,
forget the pick swaps, and Kyle Lowry's contract, I'm great with it.
You're going to lose the first two years of this deal anyway if you're Portland.
Who gives a rip? Go win years three to eight.
That's what you do when you lose a star.
And by the way, you got a lot out of dame, you sold a lot of tickets, you kept your fan base loyal,
they still sell out, you didn't win a championship, you got some playoff wins.
But the future for Portland's incredibly bright.
everything works on your timeline for Scoot, Anthony Simon,
Jaden Sharp.
I've always thought Nurkich is an undervalued player.
He's had some injury issues, but he's a good big.
So if that's the deal, I'd make that deal and have no problem.
Scouts, this is what we pay you for.
Go hit on those second and first round picks.
I mean, Portland's going to have their picks.
They're not going to be great because they're so young for years.
So it's very possible Portland's going to be drafting somewhere between 9 and 13.
and take Miami's picks at the bottom of the first round,
you get three straight years of two first round picks.
If you hit on three of the six,
where the guys you have and the guy Miami gave you.
That's pretty exciting.
If I could have Nurkich, a good young player for Miami,
six draft picks in three years,
and I hit on half with Simon's Sharp and Scoot.
That's a playoff team.
That's a big-time team.
So I'd make that deal.

Thursday, it's a special night of baseball on Fox as Alex Bregman and the Astros
battle Giancarlo Stanton and the Yankees,
where the pirates take on Christian Yellich and the Brewers.
Catch the action Thursday at 7 Eastern on Fox.
Trade deadlines.
A lot of stuff potentially.
We know who's good.
Dodgers good.
We know for sure they're good.
And there's a lot of teams, Minnesota, Cleveland, Baltimore.
Are they postseason good?
Anybody making a last ditch effort for Otani?
Could be fun.
I don't think so.
It's a bummer.
No, I think that's over.
So yesterday we did the quarterback tiers.
That was Mike Sando, the athletic.
One of the things that jumped out,
and we don't know much about him, but Jordan Love, according to 50 scouts, executives, coaches, coordinators.
Jordan Love is in tier four, one spot ahead of Baker Mayfield, two spots ahead of Sam Howell, and two spots below.
The last player taken Brock Purdy two years ago.
Jordan Love.
In the Mike Sando article in The Athletic, Mike was on our show yesterday, there is a
quote from an offensive person in the NFL. The quotes are anonymous all throughout this. We have
no idea what this guy is. My initial read is he doesn't process the game well enough. I don't
see a natural, smooth, instinctive player the way he reacts to the defense. I have no idea. But
here's what I do know. Detroit and Chicago are going to be better this year in the Packers
Division, and Minnesota is better with a much better quarterback. They didn't get a scheduling break.
So Green Bay gets the Chargers, Denver, and Kansas City.
They're going to lose those games unless Jordan Love is really good.
They also got the NFC South, which you think is a break,
but the go-either-way games, Carolina and Atlanta, are both on the road.
The team they're probably not nearly as deep as or at good as quarterback as the Saints.
Saints are probably going to beat Green Bay and Green Bay.
The Go Either Way games, you want those at home, Carolina, Atlanta.
You can take that three, three and a half point home advantage at Lambo.
They're both on the road.
And then the random AFC team they got, the Steelers at Pittsburgh, they got no scheduling breaks.
Chiefs, Chargers, Mahomes, Herbert, Russell Wilson, at Pittsburgh,
Go Either Way Games on the road, Detroit, Chicago, Veteran Division,
Minnesota just is better.
I think it's very possible that Packers are a five-win team at five and 12.
I think it's very possible.
The other thing to remember is you don't have to be number one or two to get,
because it's a very good college quarterback draft.
You have two stars, Drake May, Caleb Williams,
three other guys.
Quinn Ewers for Texas, we talked to Steve Sarkesian yesterday,
is a fascinating player because he's got number one talent.
He has Drake May talent.
but it hasn't been refined yet.
If he has a big year, he's going to be a top 10 pick.
Also, Michael Pennix Jr. at Washington, probably somewhere between top 12, top 15 pick.
I don't buy Bow Nicks at Oregon like everybody else, but be that as it may, potentially
four really, really good college quarterbacks.
So they don't have to be number one or number two.
Here's the other thing, is that many of the teams that should be rebuilding and not great
yet, the Colts, they have their quarterback, the Texans.
they have their quarterback. Carolina has their quarterback.
So the teams that will be in that top seven to eight potentially, many have their quarterback.
Right? That's not their issue.
So in Arizona, if Kyler Murray plays, if he plays 10 games, and that's certainly possible,
well, then Arizona is going to win some games.
So also Marvin Harrison Jr., the wide receiver at Ohio State, is probably the best college
receivers since either Randy Moss or Calvin Johnson.
He's going to be a top three pick.
So what I'm saying is Green Bay doesn't have to be God awful.
They don't have to be a three or four win team to get their next star quarterback.
They could be fifth or sixth in the draft and still get the third best quarterback who could be really, really good.
But I think when you look at Green Bay and look at their schedule, they got no breaks.
The random AFC team is at Pittsburgh.
Look at the quarterbacks they face.
Mahomes, Russell Wilson, Justin Herbert, Patrick Mahomes, I mean, Kirk Cousins, Matt Stafford,
Kirk Cousins again, Jared Gough twice, better than anybody in your room.
Jimmy Garoppolo, if healthy, is better than Jordan Love as far as we can tell.
So this, if Jordan Love is a C quarterback, this is a five-win team.
I mean, the over and a half, I think they're kind of a six-seven win team, but I could absolutely
see them win in four games.
And what's interesting is that at Chicago game, you know, that's been a W for the Packers,
it feels like for 20 years.
Between Farv and Aaron Rogers, that has been a 25-year W.
Not really.
I think in terms of offensive explosiveness, Chicago's a better team now.
The more athletic better quarterback, more depth at wide receiver, better older
tight ends and the O-line for the Bears is better than people think.
So it's, we talked about this yesterday.
Everybody thinks Arizona will be terrible.
And the Rams or the Rams will be terrible.
The Rams have McVe, Aaron Donald, Cooper Cup, and Stafford.
It's a quarterback coach league.
If Stafford plays 17 games, they're not going to win four games.
They're going to win six, seven, eight games.
So Green Bay, every year this happens, a team ends up drafting in the top six or seven
we didn't see coming.
I think Green Bay is that team.
Is that an unrealistic take?
I'm going back and forth on this.
So there are 32 teams in the league, Colin.
I would say of all of them, the Packers are the team I have the least amount of confidence in
on are they going to be bad or are they going to be good.
We know they're not going to be great.
Well, listen, if you look at that schedule, very manageable.
There's a world where the defense, which is highly touted as all these high first-round picks,
where they actually perform well, unlike last year.
And Jerry Alexander doesn't get hurt.
and the defense is like a top 10 unit.
And then LaFleur says, we're running my offense, not Aaron's show.
We're going to ground and pound with the two running back Jones and Dylan.
It's going to work.
Heavy sets.
And like, maybe they could be a 10 or 11 win team.
Now, listen, I don't personally see it.
But we just don't know with Jordan Love.
Like he is a mystery right now.
Like a total mystery.
Like we hear the stuff in practice.
What if the Packers are sandbagging?
What if this is a strategy?
Hey, hey, let's downplay everything.
Let's keep it low profile.
Let me ask you this.
Name the last question.
quarterback in this league that was on a roster for three or four years and was rated low going
into the next year and popped. Aaron Rogers was getting talked about by year two on the bench.
I mean, we've had Packers on the show that are like by the second year out of Calb, guys are like,
we got a star. My homes, they were leaking footage. When you're in the NFL at quarterback,
this is his fourth year, three years. And I have a good source on this that I trust,
implicitly in that building that said there is no juice.
He's fine.
It's not special.
So he's not Goff.
He's not a number one.
He's not Kirk Cousins.
He's not athletically, Justin Fields, in his own division.
He's not Jalen Hertz.
He's not Dak.
He's not Stafford.
And forget the AFC.
So, I mean, it's...
But you know there are outliers.
Like last year, the Vikings go 11 and 0 in those games.
That is unbelievable.
I don't think it's ever happened in NFL history.
All right.
But that...
I even...
call that. Well, you thought the Vikings would be good.
Nobody had 13 and 4.
I did. 13 wins? Yeah.
I mean, in fact, I think, I think I said
they would be one of my double the win totals,
but I think they had like eight wins.
I thought it was like six. So
I, you know, if I can predict it.
Kirk Cousins, right? You got Kirk Cousins, an
offensive coach. Just a
Jefferson. Yeah, I mean, I don't think
Minnesota was a crate. They've been good
for a long time. To be
clear, I'm with you. I don't think highly
of the Packers. But, Jordan
Love may come out and just absolutely
dominate. There's a chance where. There's no
chance he comes out and dominates.
Look who they're facing the first two weeks.
It's like the Bears and the Falcons or something.
On the road. And then the, then it's
a series of Mahalms and Herbert
and Russell Wilson.
Like, I don't know. Why aren't we hearing
like Jordan Love is hanging out with the young
receivers and they're bob, they're vibing and
their buddies. And they're like really connecting.
We're not hearing. He heard Zach Wilson
going with his wide receivers west
for like a week of no phones and all this
fun stuff and like, yeah, Zach Wilson's doing everything.
There's no way that you can be
in this league on a roster for three
years as a quarterback.
And there's not one
comment of, holy hell.
Joe Burrow in camp.
Kyler Murray in camp.
Russell Wilson got named Captain
in camp. Those are, two of those
guys were number one overall. But yes, so Russell
Wilson, I get it. I don't
think highly of the Packers. But if all of a
sudden they're 11 in... There's no chance
they're winning 11 games.
Okay.
somebody's going to clip that off and call us out.
No chance.
I'm with you.
Zero chance they win 11 games.
Hour two next.
