We're digging into the biggest surprises of the season. And I'm looking back on some of my greatest playoff moments. If we didn't talk ever again, I was funny. You just understood. Find your local station for the herd at Fox Sports. Sports Radio.com or stream us live every day on the IHeart Radio app by searching Fox Sports Radio or FSR. You're listening to Fox Sports Radio. It is a Friday.
Starting point is 00:03:13 It was a wild night. Gonna be another one tonight. We're live. We're in Chicago. It's the herd. Wherever you may be, however, you may be watching or listening, thanks for making us part of your day. So we have talked about this.
Starting point is 00:03:31 A Big Ten, the NIL has done the Big Ten lot of favorites. So right now, Purdue is in Iowa and Illinois. They're all in the Elite Eight. And Michigan and Michigan State played tonight. You could have a all Big Ten Final Four. I don't think you're going to. I think Arizona may be the best team in the country. They looked like last night.
Starting point is 00:03:53 Yeah, we told you, Arizona Arkansas has all going to be a lot of points. But, you know, we all talk about the NIL. of the five biggest spenders in college basketball, NIL, four are gone. Duke is the only one left. Kentucky won a single game, same with Louisville. And for the record, BYU is the second biggest spender in college basketball. One and done, did not win a game. So it's just like life.
Starting point is 00:04:19 You can make a huge salary, but what are your financial choices? Four cars? Sorry, you're a moron. Six boats. Jet skis, moron, moron. I mean, what are you buying? Are you buying depreciating assets or accelerating assets? Real estate, equities over a long stretch.
Starting point is 00:04:42 So it's just the same thing in the NIL. Iowa of the sweet 16 teams, Iowa and Iowa State spend the least. Iowa's in the elite eight. Illinois spent a fortune. They spent a fortune overseas. They went and bought size. They're big. Michigan's in the middle.
Starting point is 00:05:01 Michigan State, by the way, all five of their starters started their career at Michigan State. Purdue does that. We talked about this yesterday. Purdue is like, we pay our guys. Four of Purdue's five starters. But they started at Purdue. So there's a lot of different ways to do it. Iowa doesn't spend any money.
Starting point is 00:05:20 Illinois spends a fortune. Purdue, Nebraska, who got bounced last night. Nebraska didn't spend any money. So, you know, I'm not saying that money doesn't matter, but it's just like having a big salary. What's the state tax rate? You have multiple cars. You have depreciating assets. That's on you.
Starting point is 00:05:44 You buy real estate equities. The dollar goes further. You'll have a nicer retirement. So, I, you know, I'm just watching, like, Illinois hammer Houston. And, you know, there was a bite earlier this season. I'm not saying money doesn't matter because Illinois went and bought. great young talent from Europe. And here's a bite from Calvin Sampson earlier.
Starting point is 00:06:05 It does matter. Are you a school academically that graduates a lot of affluent boosters? Here's what Kelvin Sampson said earlier this year. We have a very poor athletic department. We're poor. You know, we're poor when I got here and we're still poor. We probably have the lowest budget of anybody in power for, you know. and the way our recruiting is going, we have to stop at some point because we don't have enough
Starting point is 00:06:32 money to keep bringing in really good players. Teams that have the best recruiting classes usually have the most money. That's the way it is today. Absolutely right, but the biggest spender this year was Kentucky. 20 million dollars won a game. BYU, Louisville, Iowa didn't spend anything relative to the other sweet 16 teams. I also think something that helps the Big Ten immensely. I can say this. When I was a kid, I didn't watch SEC football. I watched the Big Ten.
Starting point is 00:07:04 The Big Ten in the Rose Bowl. The Big Ten is perfectly situated in the middle of the country. And when they added all those Pact 12 schools, Washington, Oregon, USC, UCLA, everybody said, oh, it's bad. Bad. Those schools look so smart. The Big Ten coffers are getting full. They have pulled away.
Starting point is 00:07:24 They are the super conference in college sports. We could have an all Big Ten final four. And everybody, oh, that's not good for the sport. Well, the ratings are up. I think one of the reasons the ratings are up is because the big tennis situated right in the middle of the country and is connected to Seattle, Los Angeles, Chicago, the New Jersey, New York market. I think one of the reasons the ratings are up, it's the right team winning. You know, I mean, as somebody that grew up on the West Coast, Pacific Northwest, I mean, I remember Frank Broils and Keith Jackson doing some play-by-played, occasionally see a Southern game.
Starting point is 00:08:00 Sorry to date myself, but I watched the Pac-12 and the Big Ten. And so Iowa is in. Iowa didn't spend any money. Purdue only spends on their own guys. Illinois spent a lot. So did Kentucky. They're not here. Here's Iowa's coach after moving to the elite eight.
Starting point is 00:08:18 Maybe they should have seated us better. No, I'm just kidding. They seated us right where we should. I mean, yeah, I mean, I guess there's Cinderella. You know, we were so close in a lot of games, and I don't like to use that. And we were right there. We just, and then we lost some games we probably shouldn't have. Cinderella, whatever they want to call us.
Starting point is 00:08:38 I mean, I swear, in the elite eight, that's what they need to call us. Okay, so, yep, there's five teams from the Big Ten left. Could be six, but remember, Iowa beat Nebraska. So they beat another Big Ten program. So I think it's the time zones. It's the brands. It's the affluence. And the other thing is, they got really good coaches.
Starting point is 00:09:03 Right now, the Big Ten's got the most, probably the most good coaches. So the Dodgers opened the season last night. They beat Arizona 8 to 2, fell behind and then had a couple of big four-run endings. Dodgers owner Mark Walter came out yesterday and addressed the disparity. an income and he said, yeah, we need more parity. But I want to talk about something about baseball that doesn't get discussed a lot. And this is why I feel much more comfortable with a baseball dynasty than I do in the NBA. Baseball has a randomness that football and basketball do not.
Starting point is 00:09:40 Michael Jordan did not have a series where he just couldn't score. Yet Otani in the playoffs against the Phillies, the best player in baseball went one for 18. You also have pitching injuries over the course of the season. You don't have that many superstar injuries in the playoffs, although last year, admittedly, Halliburton and Tatum got hurt. But a great example of the randomness in baseball is that the Toronto Blue Jays were awful last in the American League East, and then one year later they not only got to the World Series,
Starting point is 00:10:12 they had 20 more hits in the World Series than the number one payroll Dodgers. Paul Skeens, best pitcher in baseball, could not get out of the first inning last night. Aaron Judge, the best Yankee, was the only Yankee to not get on base in the first Yankee game, the best player by a mile. In fact, he had four strikeouts and five played appearances. You don't see that in other sports. MJ didn't have a series where he couldn't get a shot. You know, the KD Warriors, didn't they go like 16 and 1?
Starting point is 00:10:46 first, you know, run through the playoffs. The Dodgers needed, and I went and looked this up this morning, the Dodgers last season had two elimination games against the Blue Jays. The year before, they had two elimination games against the Padres. They've been backed up against the Wall in the World Series, the NLDS. The Dodgers have gotten, they got breaks in the World Series. So in a basketball dynasty, there's not a ton of randomness. You've got to have, you You've got to have a lot of wing defenders and two stars minimum. And in football, if you don't have the right coach and quarterback, what are we talking about? You're not really a viable team.
Starting point is 00:11:30 But in baseball, you can spend a lot of money like the Mets. They're not historically well-run. And you can spend very little money like the Guardians and the Brewers and make the playoffs. The lousy angels last year. Think about this. of baseball. The lousy angels last year went 6-0 against the Dodgers. Otani switches teams. Doesn't matter.
Starting point is 00:11:54 Angels go 6-0. So you can talk all you want about the parody. Baseball's randomness, to a large degree, is their secret sauce. I mean, the Yankees still spend money. They still spend money. I don't think they always spend it wisely, like Kentucky
Starting point is 00:12:12 basketball, but they still spend money. Here was Dave Roberts yesterday. as they go for three straight and trying to balance all the stars out in the locker room. We have a certain standard of excellence, and I think that even when you watch us, Colin, how we play the game, run the bases, play defense, it matters, how we practice. I think the message as far as keep the blinders on, get the blinders on, look forward.
Starting point is 00:12:37 I reference a greyhound, you know, when a greyhound's in a race, they're chasing the lure, and they're not looking at who the competition is to the side. I think that the lure is right there, that trophy. And we're chasing that trophy, and it doesn't matter who's beside us, who's behind us, who's chasing us. And I think it's just more of just keeping the focus on ourselves. So, J. Mack, you love your college basketball. I will tell you, I think the only team that feels like it can match up with Arizona right now does feel, I say Michigan, but Illinois has been blowing me away. I think Arizona is the best team left.
Starting point is 00:13:16 really close with Michigan. Now, Arizona does not take or make a lot of threes. Last night, they didn't take many, but they hit almost every time they shot. So Arizona is not a team necessarily that if you get ahead of them, they can struggle to play catch up. Now, they don't get behind very often, but they don't shoot a lot. I mean, their size and quickness. I mean, they're bench, they have bench guys that would start for other teams remaining. Like Arizona's depth of talent, big, you know, they spent some money, a lot for, different first round NBA guys. Do you think they're the over?
Starting point is 00:13:50 I still think Michigan matches up with Arizona. Yes. My guess is I'd still take, I have Michigan winning it. I would take Michigan over Arizona, but you could talk me into Arizona pretty quickly. Yeah, well, we would love to get that game, right? A big matchup of a bunch of studs. I do think the Arizona back court is just unbelievable. The senior defensive player of the year in the Big 12 and then the freshman
Starting point is 00:14:13 Burries, who's getting compared to SGA. I mean, they're stacked. They looked amazing. But, Colin, that Iowa game, how crazy is it that Nebraska was in the two best games of the tournament? Nebraska Vanderbilt and Nebraska, Iowa. I mean, Iowa didn't lead. They trailed for 38 minutes.
Starting point is 00:14:29 And then unbelievably come through at the end. I don't think I've ever seen like a pivotal play where a team only had four guys on the court. That was crazy how there was just a breakdown out of the timeout for Nebraska. Iowa gets to dunk and it's game over. That game was unbelievable. Texas fans aren't happy because it looked like an over-the-back. But Texas had more than their fair share of opportunity. Texas could not make stops.
Starting point is 00:14:51 They couldn't make free throws, 12 of 21. I don't have a lot of sympathy. You got to hit your free throws. And again, I thought the Texas offense in the first half, it was great. It just couldn't make any stops. Yeah. So there we go. Tonight's going to be an all-timer.
Starting point is 00:15:05 You get Izzo against Hurley, Michigan State against Yukon. Who's your picking that one? Sporty and Yukon. I don't have a strong vibe. I like Iowa State. I like Michigan. I think St. John's and the points is a really interesting bet. I think that's got upset potential, St. John's.
Starting point is 00:15:25 Yeah, that's a good call by you. Yeah. Be sure to catch live editions of the herd weekdays in noon Eastern 9 a.m. Pacific on Fox Sports Radio, FS1, and the IHeard Radio app. Hi, this is Jay. I'm the producer of the Paul and Tony Fuscoe show. Usually in these promos, they ask you to listen to the show. I'm here to ask you, please don't listen to the show. The host are two absolute morons who have the dumbest takes on sports imaginable.
Starting point is 00:15:48 Don't listen to this show so it can get canceled. Whoa, whoa, what the hell are you doing in our studio? Get him, Paulie. Ignore that fool. Listen to the Pauline Tony Fusco show on the IHart Radio app or wherever you get your podcast. He's still moving. Hey, it's us to Jonas Brothers, and guess what? We have some big news.
Starting point is 00:16:08 What's the news? Huge news. We created our own podcast called, Hey, Jonas. We invented a podcast? Well, we didn't invent it. We just contributed to a... We're the first people to do podcasts. Pretty, yeah, pretty wide range of podcasts throughout there.
Starting point is 00:16:21 But this one's extra special. So how do we actually come up with a name, Hey Jonas, guys? I honestly don't remember. I think it was on a call about what we should call it. Oh, we were thinking I'm originally calling it one of the early names of our band. Before Jonas Brothers was... This is how you guys remember it going down? Yes.
Starting point is 00:16:43 I have a very different memory of this. We were talking about a thing. a bit for the podcast where people could call in and say, Hey, Jonas. And then I wrote down on my little notepad, Hey Jonas, and offered it up as a potential title for the podcast. But thanks for remembering that, guys. Listen to Hey Jonas on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcast. Just listen. We don't care where you hear it. Another podcast from some SNL late night comedy guy, not quite.
Starting point is 00:17:08 Unhumor me with Robert Smigel and Friends. Me and hilarious guests from Bob Odenkirk to David Letterman helped make you funny. This week, my guest, S&L's Mikey Day and headwriter, Streeter Seidel, help an a cappella band with their between songs banter. Where does your group perform? We do some retirement homes. Those people are starving for banter. Listen to humor me with Robert Smigel and friends on the I-Heart Radio app,
Starting point is 00:17:32 Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Last night, a blown call changed a game. This morning, the internet lost its mind. Highlights are trending, opinions are flying, and nobody's telling you exactly what happened. That's where Sports Slice comes in. I'm Timbo. Every episode, we're cutting through the noise. Breaking down the plays, the controversies, and the stories behind the headlines.
Starting point is 00:17:52 We go straight to the source, the athlete themselves. Their locker room stories, their reactions, the stuff nobody gets to hear. The laughs, the drama, the triumphs, the moments that never make the highlight real. From viral moments to historic games, from buzzer beaters to controversial calls, we break it down, give you context and ask the questions everybody wants answered. Sports slice brings you closer to the action with stories told by the people. people who live them. Listen to Sports Slice on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcast.
Starting point is 00:18:21 And for more, follow Timbo Slicelife 12 and the TikTok podcast network on TikTok. The French Open is one of the toughest tests in tennis. And I know firsthand because I competed there myself. I'm Renee Stubbs. And on the Renee Stubbs tennis podcast, I'm breaking down everything happening at Roland Garris. Every match, every upset, and what it really takes to win on clay. Genshin win. I mean, she went down in three to Rabakina, but I'm delighted.
Starting point is 00:18:50 She's an outsider to win the French for me. And she likes Clay. Listen, Lernerabakina is arguably the best player in the world right now. And I actually can win on any surface. Because if she's serving, well, good luck. Consider this your court side seat to the French Open. Listen to the Renee Stubbs tennis podcast on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Presented by Capital One, founding partner of IHeart Women's Sports.
Starting point is 00:19:15 Imagine an Olympics where doping is not only legal but encouraged. It's the enhanced games. Some call it grotesque. Others say it's unleashing human potential. Either way, the podcast's Superhuman documented it all, embedded in the games and with the athletes for a full year. Within probably 10 days, I'd put on 10 pounds. I was having trouble stopping the muscle growth.
Starting point is 00:19:39 Listen to Superhuman on the IHard Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. So I'm reading an article this morning. Is hating Duke basketball falling out of style? No, they're no longer a threat or a perceived threat. The article says, well, you know, Coach Kay's not around anymore. He can be very irritating. I covered UNLV's teams when they played Duke in those back-to-back championship years.
Starting point is 00:20:15 Nobody was nicer to Jerry Tarkhanian than Mike Shosheshefsky. totally classy, very complimentary. I've never hated Duke because I like favorites over underdogs. I don't buy into that mythology of the underdog that everybody likes them, TV ratings show, they don't. People say a lot of things. I'm going to go to the gym.
Starting point is 00:20:32 I'm going to work out this year and by March 15th, you don't go. So I don't listen to what people say. I watch what people do. When Duke's on, the ratings are huge. And it's not because Duke has a lot of graduates. It's a small private school. It's a classy organization. Here's why people don't hate them.
Starting point is 00:20:49 because they have their longest title drought since the 90s, and you're not threatened by them. You ever notice the polarizing teams are the ones that win it all? Find me the beloved dynasty. Everybody finds a reason to hate a dynasty for various reasons. They're cheaters. They're obnoxious. Find me the beloved dynasty. And don't tell me MJ's Bulls because they didn't like him in Philly, Boston, Detroit, Los Angeles, Cleveland, or Seattle.
Starting point is 00:21:15 They didn't like him everywhere. We worshipped MJ because he was cool and had. style and was the best player we'd ever seen. The only dynasty that I think most people were all in on was the Tiger Woods dynasty, but he wasn't representing a city, he wasn't wearing a jersey, just a red polo shirt on Sundays, and team sports get very provincial, very regional, and very tribal. So I don't get the Duke Hate. It comes from jealousy. They don't have NCAA issues. They're above board. Well, they've got money. They're a small, rich, private school. you know, they, you know, the floor slapping, blah, blah, blah.
Starting point is 00:21:52 Everybody can, and yesterday we had Carlos Boozer on, who was an All-American at Duke and he's got two kids playing on the team. And, you know, most of the time, you know, people ask me sometimes in this business or any business, like, why do you think this person's successful and that person successful? And my take is, well, Belichick and Andy Reid and Sean McBeyton are just smarter than most other coaches. Smart wins.
Starting point is 00:22:15 And, you know, classic example is Kentucky can run through coaches and Carolina can run through coaches. And, I mean, let's be honest about Duke. This happens very infrequently where you lose an all-time legend. I mean, Bobby Knight leaves Indiana, it's a football school. A lot of these programs, you lose a legend football or basketball collegiately. And it's over. You, like, I mean, it took, it took Yukon a while Calhoun to get the Dan Hurley. Right? So I asked Boozer, whose two kids are now for the, you know, Duke, thoughts on John Shire.
Starting point is 00:22:53 He's got the best recruiting class three out of the last four years, the best player in college basketball, the last two years for sure. And he's been able to implement and put his fingerprints on the program, do it his way, bringing his staff with his style. And I just think that it goes to some of his basketball genius on how good of a coach he is to have. But think about this, you lose your time. higher starting five to the NBA a year ago. And you come back this year and you're arguably having maybe even a better season. Yeah, I think a lot of Duke is they're smart. They're, I mean, think about, think about all the college basketball programs.
Starting point is 00:23:31 Jim Beheim leave Syracuse. They are unwatchable. Duke loses maybe the best coach ever collegiately, Coach Kay, they're still great. Had some injuries to overcome. Still great. J Mack with the news. No, no, no, no, no. Turn on the news.
Starting point is 00:23:50 This is the herd line news. Love your college basketball takes. I'm loving that you like college basketball, Colin. And I know you were watching last night, Purdue against Texas, the big tip-in by TKR, Traykopf and Ren. I don't know, people want to shove and over the back. I didn't think it was egregious. It looked like the Texas player just got too low.
Starting point is 00:24:10 And also, are you going to call it there? Unlikely. You know, I just think that's one. of those. We've talked about this before. Hail Mary in football. They never call pass interference. Guys are grab it and pushing. On a play like that, referees want to get out of the way. It's sort of, I mean, in fact, if I was a coach, I would say, guys, you can bump a little bit on final shots. The referees do not want to call it. Be aggressive. And Purdue was aggressively attacking the rim. And they win. Yeah, I know the people are excited for the Purdue win.
Starting point is 00:24:42 I got some boiler makers buddies. They love Braden Smith. Colin, this team had one guy go four for eight from three. The rest of the team on Purdue, O for 12. I mean, I think, I know this is going to be, I think they're just tired. Remember they had that big 10 run? It was like four, I think four games in four days. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:24:59 And they look drained. Braden Smith can't make shots now. They're best player. You know, Texas didn't have their seven footer in. Yeah. Now, who's not a great rebounder. Bad job. that in the end, that was, you know, a little bit of a coaching negligence.
Starting point is 00:25:14 You know, they got that, again, you don't want to eat beat up coaches. Rick Petino said it. You win as many as you lose in these last, I mean, St. John's won a buzzer, beater against, you know, against Kansas. The winning basket was for a guy that hadn't, I don't think he had scored. He hadn't scored. Yeah, yeah. So there's a, again, there's a little bit on the final whistle, final play of the game,
Starting point is 00:25:35 be aggressive, attack the rim, probably not. going to call it. I just think situationally, no ref wants to call that. Yeah, it's just a tough spot. Now, let me ask you, we watched Arizona later in the night just obliterate Arkansas. Offensively. Arkansas has no defense. None. Arizona faces Purdue next, and I know some people want to make the case for Purdue. Some of the analytics models have this only Arizona by four, but the line opened Arizona by six. I don't think it's a great matchup. The guy who had the tip in for Purdue, he's going to be like a 12-year player in Europe make a lot of money. He's going to going up against an NBA front line in Arizona.
Starting point is 00:26:10 No, I think I liked Purdue in that game last night, by the way. Yeah. I liked Purdue. I liked Iowa. I was shocked how effective Illinois was. Illinois, I mean, because I watched them. I only watched Illinois twice this year. And I was telling the staff this morning, they got beat both times.
Starting point is 00:26:27 By Michigan. I remember the Michigan game. They got destroyed game. And by the way, you knew Illinois was good when you watched them because they were big. They've got a really good coach. But it's like, you know, some of these teams, it's matchup based. and I don't think Purdue is a good matchup for Arizona. I don't either.
Starting point is 00:26:42 Even the Purdue tall kid, who I think looks like Rick Smiths. Remember the dunking Dutchman from the Pacers? What's he going to do against Crevas? Crevas, like 7-2, immovable. Anyways, good win for Purdue. All right, let's move on to the Iowa-Nabrasca game. I was obsessed with this. We have Iowa, as you know.
Starting point is 00:26:58 If you watch this play, Colin, Nebraska only had four players on the court. There's a minute left in a three-point game. And their coach, the other player, like, sprints off the bench. don't know how that happens. I do love Fred Hoyberg. You know, he seems like a great guy. He's a legendary college basketball player. Colin, his argument about what happened here is pretty terrible. Take a listen. Were the officials supposed to hold the ball before the ball was playing? That's a good question, Rob. And I've never been in a situation like that. I know they always count to make sure there's not six. I don't know the rule on that with four. But yeah, I mean,
Starting point is 00:27:32 again, it was a miscommunication. And, you know, unfortunately, it happened. But, you know, As far as the rule, I've never been a part of anything like that. So, Colin, I mean, listen, Hoyberg's played more basketball, knows more about hoops than I ever will. But the referees should count how many players on the court? What? That's not their job? That's on the coach and the staff.
Starting point is 00:27:54 This is just an egregious error. Have you ever seen anything like that? Well, not in that situation. No. You know, listen, I feel, you know, Nebraska wasn't going to win it. I feel bad for them. but, you know, it's just this stuff is, Hoyberg's a good coach.
Starting point is 00:28:11 I mean, they've had a great year. Nebraska, we've never talked about Nebraska basketball. They've done an incredible, and again, they're a school. I don't think they spend a lot of money. They were near the bottom with Iowa in spending. So, you know, you win a couple of games in the tournament and you're one of the small spenders.
Starting point is 00:28:31 You deserve credit. Yeah, major credit. Started the season 20 and L. They spend money on girls, women's volleyball, at Nebraska. They're an unbelievable juggernaut. I know this because my daughter plays volleyball. Anyways, final story, Collins, go to the NFL.
Starting point is 00:28:43 Now, this was kind of an under-the-radar story yesterday. So the Browns, they restructured, Miles Garrett's trade. And Browns fans are looking into it, and they're like, wait, what exactly is going on here with this contract? Miles Garrett's contract gets restructured. And some of these capologists are like, hmm, wait a minute, based on this,
Starting point is 00:29:06 it almost feels like the Browns are going to be trading Miles Garrett. His contract now makes him tradable. There's a lot with the dead cap. I don't want to get too much into the minutia we can if you want. But the big story here is all of a sudden Miles Garrett could be traded. Time out, time out. Why would you trade him when you're not paying Shadour Sanders or quarterback anything? And if you draft another quarterback, you won't be paying him for four years.
Starting point is 00:29:30 So you have a five-year, half-decade run of not paying your quarterback, and you have the best football player in the league at his position. It's what I said about Max Crosby. The Raiders have no veteran, like, soul of the locker room guys. They're going to get 10 draft picks. Keep Max Crosby. Why would I get rid of the best player in his position? It'd be one thing if I was paying my quarterback,
Starting point is 00:29:52 my quarterback was Caleb Williams in three years, and I'm paying him $65 million a year. Then we can have a discussion. You're not, who are they paying on this? They're not paying a star receiver. They're not paying a quarterback. They're at their best. Didn't Injoku leave?
Starting point is 00:30:06 So now they have that young tight end from Bowling Green. So they're not paying him. Who are they paying? Well, Colin, remember yesterday I mentioned teams tanking. Okay? People don't want to hear this. The Cleveland Browns, no, Miles Garrett requested a trade last year. He wants to go play for a contender just like Crosby.
Starting point is 00:30:22 The Browns are going nowhere. If you're selling at the top of Miles Garrett, he just broke the sack record. What can you get for him? Oh, you could get two first and probably a third. Why would you not deal? I mean, Jalen Waddled got a first, a third, a fifth. Miles Garrett is two first. And then I think Miles Garrett, you could get two firsts.
Starting point is 00:30:41 And like a starting, you know, like a starting right tack. You're not getting a left tackle, but like a starting center or a starting right tackle maybe. So, and a lot of, you know, our producers and staff, they're saying Miles Garrett has said like nothing since the new coach hiring, Todd Bunkin. Very quiet. And you know behind the scenes to restructure this contract is like, hmm, interesting. Like, Colin, I think it makes a ton of sense to sell high on Miles Garrett, just broke the sack record. You're not winning anything with him next year. Get him off the books, bring in multiple picks.
Starting point is 00:31:10 Next year's quarterback class. We're starting to see stories pop up about how – it's like eight or nine potentially deep. I don't think you ever want to move off the best player in the world at a position. Now, now, the best player in the world at Guard, the Chiefs moved off Joe Tunney. that's different. But I mean, even the best center, I would not have let Tyler Linderbaum go if I was the Ravens. Like I wouldn't let Creed Humphrey go if I was the Chiefs. So I would, I'm just saying if I was a GM and I wasn't paying my quarterback, I'll give you credit. I think this is, this sounds, if they move him, that is deliberately seeking the number one pick.
Starting point is 00:31:53 Because you can't tank in football. You've got to, you mean, it's just physically. You can not folk make a quarterback a priority and then you stink. But if you're Josh Allen and you see this news, are you instantly calling Bean and being like, bro, can we just freaking get Miles Garrett, please? Can you just go get him? I don't care about picks the next few years. Josh would have to do, they'd have to restructure Josh's contract. Or maybe he'll want to do that.
Starting point is 00:32:15 And you know Jerry Jones sees that and the bat signal goes up. Oh, that's my music, baby. Can I give up three picks? Like, people go crazy. Yep. Jay McLean News. Well, that's the news. And thanks for stopping by.
Starting point is 00:32:29 The Herdline News. I'm going to tread lightly here because J-MAC's going to get into his feels. So Luca Dantich has had a great last couple weeks. And I saw the headline today. Luca Dantage is on a scoring tear, the likes of which we've not seen since Michael Jordan. If you go look at this latest group of,
Starting point is 00:32:54 of teams that he's rolled against. Pacers, Pistons, Magic, Heat, Rockets, twice. Is there anything they have in common? I think there is. If Luca doesn't have a star-scoring guard that he would have to guard
Starting point is 00:33:11 in a game and he can concentrate on offense, he's money. Houston doesn't. A man, Thompson's not a skilled offensive player. Pacer's don't. Miami Heat's best player is Bam, a big. I think what you're going to see, and I've said this before, Luca is wonderful in the regular season. But if you look at the West,
Starting point is 00:33:33 what are teams going to do to Luca Dantage? Minnesota last year, make him go guard and. Okay, so Luke is the number one usage rate player in the league. That means he's got the ball a lot. We've seen guys like that wear down in the playoffs. Remember this. The last guy who led the NBA in usage rate, and won a championship, Michael Jordan, 28 years ago.
Starting point is 00:33:59 It's really hard to do. And Jordan was playing 36 holes between games. Michael Jordan's physiology is just hard to explain. I mean, I remember when he went to minor league baseball, he'd go to the south. He's like in Birmingham, he's putting on one of those dark sweatsuits and batting practice for hours until there were blisters on his hands, and then he would go out and play. Jordan's ability, his relentless ability to just have energy an entire season. I've never seen anything like it.
Starting point is 00:34:33 Charles Barkley's like, I'd play golf, Michael play 36 holes, and then there'd be a playoff game. So that's not Luca. Luca's not in Michael Jordan shape. So if you go look at the West, it's going to be fascinating because SGA, Oklahoma City is going to go, okay, SGA, hunt him. Minnesota is going to go aunt hunt him. San Antonio,
Starting point is 00:34:54 Stefan Castle, or Dylan Harper, hunt him. So the three, and Denver, by the way, Jamal Murray, we're going to hunt Luca. So the four teams that give the Lakers trouble in the West all have a guard or an assignment, a wing player, that Luca is going to have to defend at some point. And those teams are going to make sure Luca and his number one usage rate has to guard those players.
Starting point is 00:35:21 And what does it mean? Between usage rate and having to play on the defensive end, you're not the same offensive player. Go look at a lot of Luca's biggest nights. And again, regular season and not postseason. But Detroit, Kate Cunningham's out. He doesn't have a big defensive assignment. Rockets. Well, Shen Goon, Kevin Durant, those aren't his guys.
Starting point is 00:35:39 And I'm in Tompson's not a great offensive player. The Miami Heat. Again, bam. So that's the advantage with Luca. these usage rate guys in the playoffs historically struggle. But in the West, and this is why I think the Lakers are so fascinating, the teams above them have star players, often the best player on a team, that Luke is going to be asked at least to some degree to score.
Starting point is 00:36:05 I mean, good God, folks. When they played the Pacers, the Indiana Pacers are the worst team in the league in their tanking. Players that Luca guarded in that game shot 70%. 13 of 19. So again, when Luca plays teams without elite scores, we talk about his offense. Mark my word, we get to mid-May. That's when the Luca questions are going to happen. And it would be different if the Lakers had a great rim protector.
Starting point is 00:36:40 But you beat Luca, it's a pathway to the basket, because DeAndre Aden can't guard the camera. in this studio. So J-Mack, I know, I'm going to go. That pacer's stat is crazy. You said 13 or 19. 13 of 19. It was the final game of a six-game road trip. The Lakers played no defense, gave up like a buck 30, 130 points.
Starting point is 00:37:04 I'll excuse that. I do think your point about hunting, Luca is interesting. But if you noticed, Reddick has done a lot of gimmicky zones. He's tinkered with a lot of zone in the second half of the season during this Lakers hot streak. I don't know if the zone will be usable in the playoffs. Yeah, I don't think you can. I think there's too, I think the teams that you play make it very hard to do that. It's possible. Listen, everybody knows the whole story on Luca. Usage rate. I mean, if you go look at the history of Luca in the playoffs, teams go after him and force him to defend. And so if you
Starting point is 00:37:37 don't have somebody that he really has to defend, he can cheat. He gets to save his energy for the offensive end. Houston, he, he, Detroit without Cade Cunningham. The problem is SGA, and Dylan Harper, De Aaron Fox, Stefan Castle, Jamal Murray, they're going to make sure
Starting point is 00:37:58 Luca has to be on the hip of those guys and that Luca Dontich has the highest career usage rate of all time. Yeah, now he has gone to the conference finals with Dallas and then he went to the NBA finals with Dallas. This idea that they're going to attack him, I think he's ready for
Starting point is 00:38:14 it. It would be nice to have a rim protector. you know, DeAndre Aiton can't jump over a phone book or defend a light in your studio. So that's a problem. Yeah. But I do think ultimately, you know, Lakers cruising in round one, round two is the tough one. I'd rather face the thunder than the Spurs. I don't want to see the Spurs. One Bin Yama, no thank you.
Starting point is 00:38:33 I think they're really tough matchups either way. Be sure to catch live editions of the herd weekdays in noon Eastern 9 a.m. Pacific. Hey, it's us, the Jonas brothers. And guess what? We have some big news. What's the news? Huge news. we created our own podcast called Hey Jonas.
Starting point is 00:38:49 We invented a podcast? Well, we didn't invent it. We just contributed to it. We're the first people to do podcasts. Pretty, yeah, pretty wide range of podcasts throughout there. But this one's extra special. So how do we actually come up with a name Hey Jonas, guys? I honestly don't remember.
Starting point is 00:39:05 I think it was on a call about what we should call it. Well, we were thinking I'm originally calling it one of the early names of our band before Jonas Brothers. This is how you guys remember it going down? Yes. I have a very different memory of this. We were talking about a thing, a bit for the podcast, people could call in and say, hey, Jonas. And then I wrote down on my little notepad,
Starting point is 00:39:28 Hey Jonas, and offered it up as a potential title for the podcast. But thanks for remembering that, guys. Listen to Hey Jonas on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcast. Just listen. We don't care where you hear it. Another podcast from some SNL, late-night comedy guy, Not quite. Unhumor me with Robert Smygel and Friends. Me and hilarious guests from Bob Odenkirk to David Letterman help make you funnier.
Starting point is 00:39:52 This week, my guest, S&L's Mikey Day and head writer, Streeter Seidel, help an a cappella band with their between songs banter. Where does your group perform? We do some retirement homes. Those people are starving for banter. Listen to humor me with Robert Smigel and Friends on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Last night, a blown call changed the game.

I'm Renee Stubbs, and on the Renee Stubbs tennis podcast, I'm breaking down everything happening at Roland Garris, every match, every upset, and what it really takes to win on Clay. Jenchian win? I mean, she went down at three to Rabakina, but I'm delighted.
Starting point is 00:41:26 She's an outsider to win the French for me. And she likes Clay. Listen, Lina Rabakina is arguably the best player in the world right now, and I actually can win on any surface, because if she's serving, well, good luck. Consider this your court side seat to the French Open. Listen to the Renee Stubbs tennis podcast on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Presented by Capital One, founding partner of IHeart Women's Sports. Imagine an Olympics where doping is not only legal but encouraged.
Starting point is 00:41:56 It's the enhanced games. Some call it grotesque. Others say it's unleashing human potential. Either way, the podcast's superhuman documented it all, embedded in the games and with the athletes for a full year. Within probably 10 days, I'd put on 10 pounds. I was having trouble stopping the muscle growth. Listen to Superhuman on the I-Hard Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.
Starting point is 00:42:21 Well, if you're missing football, we got your fix. The United Football League returns with a new season of pro football in the spring. UFL kickoff weekend starts tonight at 8 Eastern and continues tomorrow at 4 on Fox. And Rick Newheisle, the new head coach is. the Dallas Renegades will be joining the herd live in 20 minutes. One of the things that frustrates a lot of people, myself included, about the media, is they bring up things that nobody really cares about. Watch out for this.
Starting point is 00:42:51 This is a problem. And nobody really thinks it's a problem. I think one of those examples would be like occasionally yelling at a player. I played in high school sports. Every coach, I think in our conference was a screamer. And they were fine. You know, what is coaching other than taking you to a place you can't get to by yourself? That's what coaching is.
Starting point is 00:43:20 So Tom Izzo is loud. He uses volume and he addressed it this week. I don't give a damn. I don't. But I tell you what, I don't have many players that leave. I don't have many players that don't come back. so somebody must enjoy something. Counterability is going to be big until I leave.
Starting point is 00:43:42 That bothers some people. God bless them. I love it. So, I mean, to me, gentle parenting or negotiating with your kids, good luck with that. I don't think it works. I mean, they did a study in 2022.
Starting point is 00:44:00 They did a study. And they found that children raised with authoritative parenting styles achieve more academically. And similarly, on another study, they discovered that a lack of like authoritative parenting, like sometimes parents say, because I'm the parent, the parents that didn't parent like that, the children, the number one factor in low life satisfaction was not having a parent who directed traffic. That's, I mean, I'm just going back to my life in college and high school. My favorite teachers occasionally barked.
Starting point is 00:44:38 I needed to be barked at. I wasn't always this likable. Here's Dan Hurley talking about tough coaching. Yeah, I just think that's society. We've got soft in a lot of ways. I think with trying to develop young people, I think young people, the teachers and coaches that impact their lives the most or not the teachers and coaches that gave them a grade,
Starting point is 00:45:05 they didn't deserve. I mean, you remember the teachers and coaches that pushed you to your maximum, you know, that pushed you beyond your comfort level that got the most out of you, that English teacher, that, you know, made you do the work and the tests were hard and you had to study hard and just think the same thing applies to coaching. Yeah, and people say, well, what about Bob Knight? Yeah, he went over the line all the time. Most coaches don't do that.
Starting point is 00:45:32 And for the record, Jay Wright is not a yeller and a screamer. yells at officials way more than his players. Shishovsky yelled at both. Some guys, Izzo will get, you know, he barks at both. But I've never heard a player say he hates Tom Isso. I really don't. And again, I had yellers and screamers.
Starting point is 00:45:50 And kids know they're not yelling and screaming to yell and scream. And a lot of these high volume coaches, they're the ones remaining. So remember, this is not the NBA playoffs. You don't have seven games. You've got basically a. time out, a 10-second moment with a kid, or a brief halftime. You know, you don't have seven games to massage your message.
Starting point is 00:46:13 You've got to get stuff solved, fast. And so this is one of those things that it's just sort of understood that Nick Saban barked. Clay held that USC did not. And that was one of the knocks, is the program kind of lacked an urgency. A lot of these guys who are nice guys. I mean, I was talking about this to somebody the other day about coaching, and I said, you know, you need a little, you need about 10% of jerk sometimes.
Starting point is 00:46:42 Sometimes you've got to say stuff that's hard on kids. They're fine. They're malleable, you know. So last night, and we told you yesterday on the show, we said, Arkansas versus Arizona. I like Arizona, but I said it's going to be wild and fun to watch. Darius Acliffe for Arkansas is going to be a big score in the NBA. He's not a great defender, but, you know, when I say to you great NBA defender, can you name 10? Take out Wembe. Name 10. There's not 10 great NBA defenders. So it's an
Starting point is 00:47:17 offensive league 70-30. Now, I think Wembe is so good historically that that carries his off offensive nights and he would be my MVP. But Darius Acup is phenomenal player. Catch and shoot, drive and shoot, excellent passer. He's got everything. He's small, you know, listed at six three, he's probably closer to six one and a half, but he's electric. He's going to be a really good NBA player. But last night, there's only so much you can do. Arizona is one of those teams. And that was the worst loss for John Calipari in the history of the tournament for him.
Starting point is 00:47:49 And this Arkansas team's good. And Calipari's done a great job everywhere he's gone in increasing personnel and commitment. Arkansas is a good team. But, I mean, Arizona, I mean, the only shortcoming is they don't shoot and make a lot of threes. But last night they shot like eight and they made like six. So that's a, Arizona's not maybe built to come from way behind,
Starting point is 00:48:15 but they don't really fall way behind. And here's Calipari on what he watched. Arizona is really good. And if they shoot the ball that way and do the things they did today, wow. But that was a hard one, you know. and they got us from right to beginning. We kind of kept it a little close, but they're good, really good team.
Starting point is 00:48:42 So in tournament history, something happened. Arizona had six players with 14 or more points. That is, that never happened ever. Six guys with 14 plus points. So Arizona's got guys off the bench who could start for Arkansas, and Arkansas's good. So I think Michigan, to me, Michigan and Arizona, from what I've seen, and now Michigan is also a team that can be not great on the wings. They're about Mara and Lindenburg.
Starting point is 00:49:16 They're about size. Arizona is about size and depth. So, you know, and let's be honest, you're all saying, Tommy Lloyd, he's going to take that Carolina job. Arizona's been good since like 83. They were awful. Lou Doleson took over. and they were good the first year of Lut Olson. Like the first year they were good.
Starting point is 00:49:37 They have been good for, I shouldn't say they were awful. They took over and if I recall they were okay. But with Lute, they won day one. So I have no idea why you would leave Arizona. Usually the way it works in college sports, the athletic department picks aside. Like Georgia and Penn State football. Duke and Arizona, basketball. We're going to spend money on hoops.
Starting point is 00:50:02 Here's their coach, Tommy Lloyd on the NIA. There's lots of reasons I took the Arizona job, and one of them was kind of forecasting these changes happening, because right when I was getting the job, the NIL deal was rumored, and then it started in July, and I figured Arizona's a place that is a pretty strong, long basketball tradition, and they're going to be excited to invest in basketball, and we have. Yeah, Arizona's a great job. And Tucson, I mean, you know, basketball, a lot of winter basketball starts in, you know, October, November, December, January. Tucson's a pretty good place to live.
Starting point is 00:50:41 In the summer, you can head to the hills. Hey, guys, it's us and the Jonas Brothers. I'm Joe. I'm Kevin. And I'm Nick. And guess what? We created our own podcast called, Hey, Jonas. We invented a podcast?
Starting point is 00:50:56 Well, we didn't invent it. We just contributed to it. We're the first people to do podcasts.
