It's the herd wherever you may be

Thanks for making us part of your day.
I had an epiphany last night.
I went and spent some time in the afternoon
watching after the dentist.
I'm really, to be honest with you,
I'm like a stimulus package.
Ryan told me this morning for the dental industry.
I go like eight times a year.
I watched all the highlights of all the top 20 prospects.
Sat there for an hour and a half.
You know who I think is a really fascinating player?
You know how in the NFL there's always a guy that drops?
What have Scoot Henderson drops because Portland at three takes him on?
Thompson.
Have you seen his video package?
Who the Thompson twins?
It's funny because I have an anti-Thompson twin take.
I heard from somebody.
You know they played an overtime elite, right?
Yeah.
You know how old a lot of the kids were in overtime elite?
How old?
Teenagers.
Thompson twins are like 20 grown men.
A lot of interesting stuff.
This is going to be a fun wood.
It is.
Okay, so let's start.
There was an NBA trade yesterday, and it's your classic NBA trade.
Everybody has convinced themselves they're significantly better, and I'm not sure anybody is.
I liked it for all the teams, but it didn't really solve major issues.
So the Celtics get Christopps Porzingis, but they gave up Marcus Smart and still don't have a true facilitator.
It doesn't solve the Tatum Jalen Brown deal, which is odd at times, and Porzingis gets hurt a lot.
But I do believe they're better offensively, and it was time to move off Marcus Smart.
The Grizzlies get Marcus Smart.
Okay, but they had to give up Tyos Jones, who's a better, more dynamic offensive player than
Marcus Smart. But Marcus Smart, sort of a Dylan Brooks personality, a tough guy, but more of an adult.
So he sort of solves that issue. He helps, but they lost Tyos Jones. Washington got Tyos Jones.
He could be the best player in this whole thing. He's really, really good. In fact, the Grizzlies
were better when Tyos Jones was on the floor than when John Morant was on the floor. Look it up.
But they had to give up Bradley Beal and Christop's Porzingis in the last week. So they're not better.
But this is what NBA trades do. They're exciting. They're fun.
Big names move, emerging stars move.
I get Porzinger to the Celtics.
Let's talk them.
First of all, Al Horford's old and aging, and Robert Williams can't stay healthy.
Number two is Janice, Jared Allen, Bamada Bayou, Joel Embed.
It's nice to have an active big that can give you some offense.
Number three is, I could argue the NBA is now pivoting too big again.
Seven foot three runs the floor, shoots threes.
You know what he is?
You know what Christop's Porzinger says?
he's Victor Wembenyama eight years ago, just not as good.
A seven three guy that can catch it, shoot it, move, slash.
He's just not as good as Victor Wembeyanama.
But that's kind of eight years ago.
The NBA is getting more European, more skilled, and big guys now shoot threes.
And, I mean, you look at the NBA.
When I grew up as a kid, you needed back to the basket centers.
And then you went to like Jordan and Kobe wings.
And then it was small ball.
Then it's 3 and D guys.
Now we're pivoting to European bigs that are highly skilled and really super hard to defend.
So Boston got one of those.
And he does make them a better offensive team.
But they're still not very good at facilitating the offense.
And Marcus Smart's assists got better every year.
about six a game now, six and a half, but he's not a true facilitator.
I don't have a problem moving off him.
I suggested that five or six times over the last month.
It's just, he's going into year 10.
I got one finals appearance.
He's not an elite offensive guard, and defensive guards age quickly.
I do like the fit in Memphis for him, but you had to give up a lot to get him.
But Portland's the most interesting team here because they have the highest ceiling.
Washington's in a total rebuild.
Memphis is trying to rebuild their chemistry in their locker room, and Boston's trying to finally get a title.
They've already been to the finals with this group.
Now they need the bag.
Now they need the trophy.
So it doesn't answer.
This is classic NBA trade.
Everybody's fired up for their team.
Wizards are like, yeah, we lost poor Zingis and Beal those bums, but we got Tyos Jones.
They're going to win 15 games.
But I like Tyos Jones.
Memphis is like, hey, we got an adult in the room.
Yeah, but you lost Dylan Brooks and Tyos Jones.
Pretty good players.
There's no guarantee you'll be better.
The West will be better next year.
And Boston's like, we got Barzengis, who's hurt all the time, just like your other center, Robert Williams, and you still have a point guard issue.
So I like the fit for all of them.
I don't think it solves any current issues as much as the teams think.
But I think, I do think Boston, and we said this over.
and over. It's time to move around the pieces a little bit. Marcus Smart's now becoming an old
defensive guard with limitations offensively. Let's move it. Got your two wing stars. Got to pay both.
Let's go get a big who can run the floor. I like it. Then solve everything. Think it makes them
better offensively. Maybe makes them better defensively, doubt it. But that's why NBA trades are
fun. Full of hype, full of hope. And all three of those teams today are absolutely sure.
They're significantly better and won the trade.
So the elephant in the room on Aaron Rogers is,
the Jets are kind of dysfunctional and not a perfect roster.
So Mike Tannenbaum said yesterday, former NFL GM,
he does not think Aaron Rogers makes the Jets a Super Bowl contender.
And he said, you know, basically the offensive line.
So I was thinking about this this morning,
that Matt Stafford goes to the Rams.
It's a really good offensive line.
PFF had it one of the best offensive lines.
And Tom Brady went to the buck.
It was the seventh rated offensive line.
So as quarterbacks get older, they want comfort and more time to throw.
But it doesn't stop there.
When Peyton Manning went to the Denver Broncos as an older quarterback, that Bronco
O line was rated, fourth best O line.
Older Peyton Manning had surgeries, never a great mover running less, moving less.
Wants comfort, wants time.
Joe Montana, let's go further back to the Kansas City.
Chiefs. Oh, they had Will Shields, Pro Bowl left tackle. They had a guard and a center who would later be pro bowlers.
It was a really good offensive line. Joe Montana was successful. How about Brett Farb to the Vikings,
12 and 4 Vikings? That was a really good offensive line. Steve Hutchison, Hall of Fame guard.
Sullivan, the center was good. Bryant McKinney made a Pro Bowl that year at left tackle.
Stafford, Brady, Montana, Manning, Farv. What do they have in common?
They weren't all great defenses.
They weren't all great head coaches.
They weren't all great wide receivers.
All excellent offensive lines.
Because as quarterbacks get older and they've got a few surgeries and dings,
they start moving less.
What have Jay Mack and I talked about multiple times with Aaron Rogers in the last year?
They don't run as much.
They don't want to get hit as much.
He's got that bank account.
The psychedelic conference.
Older quarterbacks don't want to get hit.
So the Jets offensive line.
Let me give you an example of a star quarterback that goes to a team of the bad O line.
How'd it work?
We just saw it, Russell Wilson to Denver.
It was a shaky O line that lost their best offensive lineman.
Garrett Bowles left tackle week five.
Awful.
Never recovered.
Biggest problem.
Not much time to throw.
Bad coach season.
Man overboard.
So it matters.
The O line is what nobody talks about because nobody's got those guys on their fantasy teams.
99% of fans, even in their hometown, can't go left tackle to right tackle and name all the starters.
We don't pay attention to offensive line.
We pay attention to defensive line because they get sacks.
We pay attention to corners and receivers and the hard-hitting linebacker and the star safety and the quarterback and the running back.
We don't pay attention to offensive lines.
They're really the key to older quarterbacks anytime they pivot to another franchise.
Stafford, Farr, Brady, Manning, Montana.
All excellent top five offensive lines when they moved.
So it's nothing against Elijah Vera Tucker.
He's a guard.
They have a huge question mark at left tackle.
They've got a question market right tackle.
They've got a rookie at center.
I'm sure Lakin Tomlinson I was told is solid.
That's nice.
They've got a promising young guard off an injury and another solid guard.
But Mike Cannonbaum's talking about something that we don't talk about.
Older quarterbacks seek time and comfort.
And it's very possible in a division with Belichick's defense and Buffalo's defense.
Aaron Rogers struggles, at least in those four games, to get comfortable.
That's not a reach.
That's not clicky.
That's actually the honest truth.
And Mike Tannenbaum hit on it.
All right.
very, very interesting show.
NBA draft tonight.
49ers apparently have bailed on Trey Lance.
Damian Lillard, I keep hearing this.
Yesterday the big story was,
The Blazers have shut down trade talks with Damian Lillard.
We are keeping him.
Okay.
At 8.15 p.m. tonight, if they draft Scoot Henderson,
how long is that going to last?
I have that all the time.
I have drawn a line in the sand.
We are not moving.
And the Blazers with the third pick take Damien Lillard's replacement Scoot Henderson.
You think maybe they'll change their opinion?
I don't know.
When I hear line in the sand, we've shut down all trades.
I'm going to wait till 8.14 tonight, Eastern Time,
just to make sure that's true, because I'm not sure it is.
Be sure to catch live editions of the herd, weekdays, and noon east.

Do you remember when Diana Ross double-tap Little Kim's boobs at the VMAs?
Or when Kanye said that George Bush didn't like black people.
I know what you're thinking.
What the hell does George Bush got to do a little Kim?
Well, you can find out on the Look Back at it podcast.
I'm Sam Jek.
And I'm Alex English.
Each episode, we pick a here, unpack what you?
went down and tried to make sense of how we survived it.
Including a recent episode with Mark Lamont Hill, waxing all about crack in the
AIDS.
To be clear, 84 was big to me, not just because of crack.
I'm down to talk about crack on day, but just so you all know.
I mean, at this point, Mark, this is the second episode where we've discussed crack,
so I'm starting to see that there's a through line.
We also have AIDS on the table right now, so.
Thank you for finishing that sentence.
Yes.
I don't think there's a more important year for black people.
Really? Yeah. For me, it's one of the most important years for black people in American history.
Listen to look back at it on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.
All right. Welcome back. Rumors flying around the NBA draft tonight. J. Mack will have those in just a couple of minutes.
I want to go back to Christop's Porzengis to the Celtics.
So what this trade also delivers beyond a guy that can get you a bucket, a high-level score, which Porzinger,
does make them better when they get kind of jammed up offensively.
I think he gives him a big guy that can get a basket.
Despite his injuries, he's not going to be a leader.
And that's what this thing delivers.
More pressure on Jason Tatum.
I'm not sure he'll handle it well.
Because Marcus Smart is older than Jason Tatum.
People around the team of Osa said he's the soul of the team.
He's the emotional backbone.
He's the emotional leader.
Tatum's just more talented.
Well, he's gone now.
Now Jason Tatum needs to do that.
Porzingis is not going to be the emotional leader.
it's got to be Jason Tatum now.
And I know he's only 25.
I keep hearing that.
He's been a pro now for, he's going into year seven.
And by year seven,
Yonis had two MVPs and so did Yokic.
Year eight, they won titles with the MVP's.
Tatum idolized Kobe Bryant.
By year seven, he had three titles.
Larry Bird, a Celtic legend.
End of year seven.
Three titles, three MVPs.
Steph Curry.
end of year seven, two MVPs, a title.
Year seven and eight, you have to start stacking things if you want me to believe you're a legend.
You got to start stacking the MVP.
You've got to start stacking the MVP. You've got to start stacking stuff.
I don't have any of it.
That's why I've always said.
I really like Jason Tatum.
I don't think he has a number one personality on many nights.
I think that's innate.
You have it or you don't.
I see a really nice kid and a really,
really good player. I don't think he's as feisty as bird. I don't think he's as unique as
Steph. I don't think he's as layered as Yokic. I don't think he's as dominant as Yonis. I don't
think he's as ruthless as Kobe Bryant. I think Jason Tatum is a really good kid and a really,
really good player. But a lot of the legends who start stacking stuff by year seven and eight
are ruthless or dominant or unique or feisty and I don't see that I see a Duke kid
nice nice family baller sometimes very reluctant to be ruthless not unique dominant on
occasional nights not layered he plays both ends so so again Porzingas gives them an
extra guy to get a bucket and
size and the league's pivoting into that.
So I like it.
But it doesn't change how I feel about Jason Tatum, nor does it change how I feel about
their offense, which without a true great facilitator has trouble getting into their
offense, nor does it change how I think about Tatum and Jalen Brown, which is an odd fit,
imperfect, good enough to win a lot of games, get your top seed when a couple playoff series.
Porzingis makes you better at one element.
worse at point guard,
little more pressure on Jason Tatum.
Excuse is done now.
You've got three, you know, you got your Booker,
your KD, and your Bradley Beale and Phoenix.
No excuses.
Don't want to hear about your bench.
Porzingis, Jalen Brown, Jason Tatum.
I don't want to hear about excuses.
I mean, you're all on Kevin Durant's got a win.
Kevin Durant's got a win in Phoenix.
At least Boston has a bench.
Kevin Durant's got a win.
Kevin Durant's got MVP finals,
rings, trophies, MVPs.
Tatum's got none of it, and a better bench and a more legendary franchise.
I mean, you all want to crush KD if he doesn't win again this year.
He's got MVP's in the finals.
A couple of them.
I got rings.
I've got greatness.
I got a legacy formed.
I think there's more pressure than ever on Jason Tatum.
J. Mack with the news.
No, no, no, no, no.
Turn on the news.
This is the herd line news.
Pressure.
Jason Tatum makes love to pressure.
Listen, I'll be honest.
I do like when we have this back and forth over people.
Like a lot of guys are saying this online.
Well, who's the leader on Boston?
Colin, Jason Tatum's 25.
The first thing he did in that locker room, him and Tatum got there.
Or, sorry, him and Brown got there.
What happened?
They beef with Kyrie Irving.
Do you remember that?
Kyrie Irving was on Boston.
Yeah.
And he was like the leader because he was the best player.
He won the title in Cleveland.
And they beef with him because they thought they had next.
And Kyrie Irving ends up running away and like talking about it didn't go well with the young guys.
So now Tatum saw how poorly that went, and he's now up against Al Horford and Marcus Smart,
veteran leaders.
What if now that Smart is gone, it's officially Tatum's team.
He can be the vocal leader.
Oh, good time out.
That's what I just said.
It is.
But you seem worried that that's a problem.
Like, what if he has always been a leader?
But now finally, Marcus Smart, the mouthy, tough guy is gone.
Did Kobe wait until it was his turn to be a leader?
Did Michael Jordan, when he joined the cocaine circus of the Bulls?
Orlando Woolridge, Quentin G.
Did he wait to be a leader?
So we've got Kobe and Michael Jordan, two of like the 15 greatest players ever.
Okay.
Jason Tatum, who's not quite there yet?
Well, let me ask it.
Did Janus, I mean, I'm looking at your argument that, you know,
Tatum just sat here waiting for his moment to be a leader.
Leaders are innate.
They grab it immediately.
But we don't know that he tried to grab it and Smart and him kind of,
remember, smart had some issues with Tatum and Brown.
So what are the young guys who think they're alphas?
I would say, you average 11, I average 25, I'm the leader.
I mean, did Dwayne Wade when he went to Miami at a Marquette, wait to be the leader?
Marcus Smart had been there, I think, since 2014.
You're a veteran, dude, eight years.
Can you imagine if I came to this show?
You've been here seven, eight years.
And I stepped up.
Here's how I'm going to do things.
I hear you guys, producers, you guys know a lot of stuff, but I'm a leader.
I'm just going to do my thing.
It doesn't work like that.
You got to, like, wreck it, read the room.
You like to say that, right?
Ron's first game.
I'm going to lead the franchise.
So we got LeBron, Kobe, and Jordan.
And Tatum.
I like that you're thinking of Taylor.
You keep calling Tatum great, and you're offended when I compare him too great.
You keep telling you, he's not an all-time great.
Not yet.
He's been in the league six years.
Oh, my gosh.
He's really good.
We've got some breaking news.
We'll get you shortly.
We'll start with the NFL.
Eagles and Cowboys.
Rivalry continues to heat up this offseason.
Both teams won a ton of games last.
Last year, they are the only NFC East with the divisions with multiple 12-game winners.
However, Philly came out on top and advanced to the Super Bowl yesterday.
DeMarcus Lawrence talked about the two NFC East rivals.
All right.
I don't feel like it's a huge gap at all.
I feel like it comes down to, you know, certain details of not just the scheme, but also, you know, of your locker room.
You know, I feel like, you know, through this time right now, when we headed the training camp,
that, you know, we make those adjustments, we learn those different things that we need to learn about our teammates
so we can, you know, fully function the way we should out there on the field.
Okay, time out.
Philadelphia is better at quarterback, tight end, wide receiver, no line.
It ain't that close.
Philadelphia is better at Philadelphia, first of all, has a conveyor belt of tight ends the last 10 years.
wide receiver they're better.
They have two number ones.
The Cowboys have one-one, and he's like a
Seedy Lambs like an okay one.
So nowhere on offense are the Cowboys.
Nowhere.
What about head coach?
Well, again, they're two offensive guys.
Siriani's been a shockingly good coach.
McCarthy's probably better than anybody wants to admit.
I don't, I just, let's just say that's a draw.
Okay.
Jalen Hertz and Dak.
Jalen Hurts is a better quarterback?
Okay, let's go to the defense.
Is Dallas better anywhere?
And not individual players, but like the defensive line.
Obviously Parsons is great.
No, I think Philadelphia is got the best, one of the best defensive lines.
And Philadelphia also has, don't they?
Better Corners.
Yeah, Dallas upgraded.
That one might be, we'll give them a wash.
Tell me where Dallas is.
I'm not saying that Michael Parsons may not be the best player between the two teams.
That could be possible.
But I'm saying, find me a unit where Dallas is clearly better.
It doesn't exist.
No.
That's why Philadelphia went toe to time.
Philadelphia got rid of some defensive players.
It's still an excellent defense.
They've crushed the draft the last few years.
They tend to do that.
I don't think it's close.
All right.
Next up, DeAndre Hopkins Watch continues.
Now, we love to do this, Colin.
DeAndre Hopkins, according to Diana Rusini,
has been to three, he's a three-time all-pro wide receiver.
Yeah.
And he continues to mull offers, know that phrasing,
from Tennessee and New England.
He's continuing to mull offers.
He visited the two teams recently.
They appeared to be the only ones in the mix.
Colin?
DeAndre Hopkins is mulling offers.
Well, that's what you do with offers.
Really?
Yeah.
Maybe they're crappy offers.
And he's putting up a smoke screen.
Hey, hey, can we get this out through a reporter?
We have two offers just so everybody knows.
We're on the league.
For the record, if he wants to be a number one, and I think he sees himself as that,
Tennessee and New England are perfect fits.
He doesn't want to go.
But if he goes to Miami, he gets lost in that.
If he goes, I mean, to me...
We don't even...
It seems like nobody wants this guy coming back to the big read here.
I think two teams do.
I think both the Titans, I think he's a one for the Titans and Patriots.
I think he's a great fit for both.
I really like him to New England.
I don't disagree with that, but I really like him to New England.
Are we going to hear that DeAndre Hopkins has a one-year $4 million or some
like ridiculously low number here?
I would guess it would be closer to two.
I mean, so what you're what your...
saying is you think his opinion on him is different than the market.
Actions, not words.
All right.
Where are the offers and where is the money?
The fact that a reporter is putting this out to me is,
Hopkins agent went to the reporter and said, hey, can you put this out that we have two
offers?
Maybe we'll get more.
We need to gin up the market and get people interested.
For the record, there's a handful of teams that have about $17 million a cap space,
but not a ton.
So there's not a lot of people that have the, the, the,
The Rams just made a move to clear cap space, and then they went and signed a running back to fortify that.
I saw that.
Well, I mean, they just-O-Michael?
Is that who it was?
He'll be their number two.
He's a good number two back.
McVeigh-Legh likes to run the ball.
So I don't know.
My take is who's got money?
And so you have to have two things to want him.
Money, a few teams have it.
And it need it for a number one.
And most teams have a one or a two they like.
But if you love him, don't you create the space?
Hey, we got to do whatever we can.
Well, I think they got to shed contracts to get DeAndre Haute.
There's not a lot of Stan Cronkies who can write checks offseason.
I think it's tougher than there.
There's not a lot of money out there.
Right.
NFL's had a strange offseason with some big names.
Just nobody wants them.
And they're not washed.
I don't think he's washed.
Do you?
Hopkins?
He's still back.
No, he can play.
He's a two on some teams and one on the Patriots and Titans.
All right.
Final story.
This is the one that's breaking here in the last 10 minutes.
According to Shams Sharania,
Scoot Henderson is now gaining serious momentum to go number.
two to Charlotte.
Brandon Miller, the kid from Alabama, has been the name that a lot of people had.
My mock draft for Fox.
It said Scoot for over a month, but I digress.
At number two.
Yeah.
I mean, we agree.
Scoot Henderson is the better prospect.
He went toe to toe with Wembe Nama in two games and looked incredible at NBA ready.
Then everybody says, oh, well, Colin, his stats in the G-League.
Dude, do you think he was interested in playing in the G-League after going up at West Wem-Manyama?
Yeah, I believe there are two stars in this draft.
and then I think the draft will unveil another two to three guys who will be impact players in about two years.
But I saw one headline today.
NBA draft after Victor Wenamah is murky.
And I wanted to say that's usually the NBA draft.
It's murky.
It's kids, 19-year-olds.
So a lot of jokers on the internet, Brandon Miller has been giving interviews this week.
And he is saying some kind of outlandish stuff.
Yesterday we talked about his goat is Paul George.
And then people asked him about Michael Jordan.
and he's like, oh yeah, Michael Jordan's old.
He was talking trash to me.
I would give him 40 or whatever he was saying.
But it was like, maybe he doesn't want to get taken by Charlotte and he wants to fall.
But you know, this hurts Portland a lot, Colin.
Why?
Well, I don't think that number three pick has as much value if it's Brandon Miller as opposed to Scoot Henderson.
So let me push back.
If you're Portland, don't they have three first round picks?
So my take on Portland is, don't they need a wing?
Because if you get Scoot Henderson, you're basically drafting.
This is not Jordan Love to the Packers.
This is a guy that's going to come in and be more dynamic athletically than your current point card.
So if you're drafting Scoot Henterson, it creates all sorts of questions.
If you get a wing for Damon Stottomier, or Damien Lillard, sorry, Blazers in my head.
If you get a wing for Damien Lillard, it makes more sense in terms of fit.
They've been looking for a wing for eight years.
They have, but is his timetable, Miller, I think, is 19.
Is that on the same as Dame Liller who wants to win a title and be a contender?
No.
Miller doesn't help.
That's the problem.
So you have to wonder, is Charlotte saying, we're taking scoot?
Anybody who wants him, like New Orleans, which is rumored to want him badly?
Give us Zion Williamson.
Let Zion come up to Carolina.
We'll send you two and whatever to make the salaries match.
Is this Michael Jordan on his way out trying to really help Charlotte because he sold the team?
I think that Zion stuff could pick up later today.
that's the big name that Charlotte obviously would want.
And Scoot Henderson has a lot of value.
Things could get very interesting tonight ahead of the draft, Colin.
I know you're going to watch it in 10.
Yes.
J-Mack with the news.
Well, that's the news.
And thanks for stopping by.
The Heard Lye News.
So we were talking about this yesterday.
The NFL draft is four days.
It gets huge TV numbers.
Brock Purdy was the last player taken in the draft a couple of years ago.
he starts for the Niners at quarterback and goes 8-0.
There's talent everywhere in this country for football.
Basketball, it's different.
So we talked yesterday about the first round tonight is going to be unique
because about every six to seven years,
you get a great prospect with no red flags.
LeBron, Tim Duncan, Akima Lajuan, Magic Johnson,
with no real red flags.
Victor Wembeyanama is that.
So that's rare.
You get one of these guys about every seven years,
which is, I mean, he's skinny.
That's not really a red flag.
flag. Young, Biggs, Janice was skinny, and bead with skinny guys put on weight. So that's rare.
But on average, what drafts give you in the NBA are young kids that become number three,
number four starters, role players, bounce around the league guys. And so we did yesterday,
I asked the staff last night, I said, let's take a five year, a recent five year group.
and our standard for, because I said, the NBA, stars are overrated, it's impactful, guys.
The NBA is all about May and June.
That's why we talk about Michael Jordan, six for six.
We don't talk about his average.
Nobody gives a rip about Michael's average.
Six for six.
Bill Russell, 11 rings.
Magic Johnson, nine finals, five rings.
What did Magic average?
Who cares?
The whole star thing, I mean, if you go to the Lakers and you're their leading score,
it doesn't even matter if you're an all-time legend.
be a star in this league, right?
The branding.
Shoe companies, branding.
Derek Rose was a star.
Didn't do anything.
He was a star.
John Morant's a star.
You're going to miss the first 25 games the next year.
Stars overrated.
What I'm looking for in a draft is impactful players who matter in May and June.
So here was our standard and it wasn't very high.
We didn't count 15 plus points or more per game in the playoffs in your career is what you have to have
average by year three. We don't count your first two years in the league because you're 20, 21 years old.
So can you average 15 plus points per game in the playoffs in your career, meaning you're the third
best player on your team? And then when at least one playoff series, it could be a flimsy first
rounder. We don't care. And in the five years we took, 2016 through 2020, 17 guys, three and a half per
draft. That's it. What we call impactful players on average in the draft. As you can see,
2018, little better than average. 2020, not very good. 2016, pretty shaky. So that was our
standard. We don't count year one or two. That's not fair. By your third year,
do you have a playoff average of at least 15 points? And if you want a singular playoff series,
One, first rounder, three and a half guys per draft.
And I think that's pretty fair and pretty reasonable.
And so now, this does exclude guys like SGA or Darius Garland,
a handful of guys, Anthony Edwards, who can't get to the playoffs.
They're part of a rebuild.
So we're not, and again, we're not saying they won't become like playoff competitors.
And you could add it to this group.
But if I even move this up to 20,
a game, most of these guys are all gone.
So the star thing is always been overrated.
Guys signed big shooting.
Zion's a star.
New Orleans is trying to get rid of him.
Star doesn't meet a ton to me.
Denver had three highly impactful players when Milwaukee won.
Drew Middleton, Janus, three highly impactful players.
Middleton's not a star.
True Holiday's not a star.
He's just a really good basketball player.
Yonis is a star.
If you really consider the NBA in that frame, in that prism, and that's what I do.
Three impactful guys, you can win a championship.
The draft gives you about three and a half a year.
Because Scoot Henderson is going to be a star his first year in the league.
Because of his highlights, he's dynamic, he's going to play above the rim.
Scoot Henderson is going to be a star year one.
He's going to be Jal.
We're going to be talking about him.
He's going to be on SportsCenter.
Is he going to be impactful in May and June?
Real doubt.
When Binyama, I think will.
by year three.
I don't know who the next guy in this draft that will be very impactful.
And I'm not even saying you have to be 25 a game.
I'm just asking for 15 plus points.
And one first round playoff series win.
That's my standard.
Get about three and a half a draft.
Be sure to catch live editions of the herd weekdays in noon Eastern 9 a.m.
Pacific.
What do you get when you combine a three-time manager of the year at a three-time national
sports writer of the year?
It's the Book of Joe podcast. Hey, this is Tom Verducci from Fox Sports, MLB Network and Sports Illustrated.

I can't wait for this, Joe. We're going to dive into what goes on in the dugout and behind the scenes in Major League Baseball.
Cars, wind, whatever else we want to talk about.

Do you remember when Diana Ross double-tapped Little Kim's boobs at the VMAs?
Or when Kanye said that George Bush didn't like black people.
I know what you're thinking.
What the hell does George Bush got to do with Little Kim?
Well, you can find out on the Look Back at It podcast.
I'm Sam Jek.
And I'm Alex English.
Each episode, we pick a here, unpack what went down, and try to make sense of how we survived it.
Including a recent episode with Mark Lamont Hill, waxing all about crack in the 80s.
To be clear, 84's big time.
to me not just because of crack.
I'm down to talk about crack on day, but just so you all know.
I mean, at this point, this is the second episode where we've discussed crack.
So I'm starting to see that there's a through line.
We also have AIDS on the table right now.
Thank you for finishing that sentence.
Yes.
I don't think there's a more important year for black people.
Really?
Yeah.
For me, it's one of the most important years for black people in American history.

Last several years, the
final four coaches in a
football season have been offensive
coaches. Last year,
you get Kyle Shanahan, taken on
Nick Seriani. You, you
You know, you take a Zach Taylor's taking on an Andy Reid.
This is what's happened to the league.
There's no reason arguing it.
The downside, the only one I can think of, the only downside to have having a brilliant
offensive coach is what is happening in San Francisco, which is if you have a quarterback
that you reach for in the first round and it's not working, you can't get rid of him.
according to Ian Rapp, Adam Schaefter, excuse me, that was on the Pat McAfee
show, there's no trade market at all for Tray Lance.
None.
So, and I think the best way I could put it is if Rubik couldn't figure out the
cube, then you wouldn't have a product.
It's too hard.
When you have Kyle Shanahan and he can't figure out the young quarterback, everybody
else goes, how the hell are we going to figure it out?
Look at what Kyle Shanahan has done to the quarterbacks in his career.
And let's take a second on this.
Kyle Shanahan made Matt Schaubb a pro bowler, made Robert Griffin the third in and out
of the league quickly, the offensive rookie of the year over Andrew Locke.
Brian Hoyer hasn't won a game he started in 12 years in the league.
league. He went seven and six with Kyle Shanahan. He made Matt Ryan, who aged quickly, an MVP.
Jimmy Garapolo reached a Super Bowl and Brock Purdy, the final guy drafted in the draft a year ago.
Went seven and no. Kyle Shanahan makes everybody work. I mean, it's one thing that Sean
Peyton got Teddy Bridgewater to go five and oh, or Alex Smith.
had his career resurrected by Andy Reid.
We're talking about like Houdini here, Garapolo, Matt Schaub, Matt Ryan.
And yet, with Trey Lance, a couple of camps, opportunities, here are the numbers.
As a starter, he completes 55% of his throws with a 73 passer rating.
All right.
What about just when he comes in the games later?
he plays.
In his career, he's completed less than that,
54% with an 84-passer rating.
This is with an elito line,
George Kittle, Debo Samuel,
Brandon Ayyuk,
and a brilliant offensive head coach
that got Matt Schaubber Pro Bowl,
Brian Hoyer, a winning record.
RG3 better for a year than Andrew Luck.
If Kyle Shanahan can't figure him out,
the rest of the league's going, how are we going to do it?
It's the one thing Shanahan does.
He takes your quarterback and makes him like a grade and a half better than he is.
I like Matt Ryan.
An MVP?
When Brady was in the league?
An MVP.
When Russell Wilson was, Aaron Rogers was, Big Ben was MVP,
Matt Schab, RG3.
So that's the downside of this.
There's no market.
Because if he can't, I said this,
a year ago. I was told
that by somebody
around the organization
that last year in camp,
Kyle Shanahan, a quarterback whisperer
literally contacted a quarterback coach.
He was at Wits End.
Day to day,
we don't know what we're getting. He's struggling in the
completing passes
department.
It's not a shot. It's hard.
People miss.
Scouts pushed hard.
for Trey Lance.
Reportedly, he wanted Mac Jones.
The coach, not a shock, was right.
All right.
Another NFL thought.
So, a Dak Prescott was talking yesterday
about how, because of back-to-back 12-win seasons,
the Cowboys really are building momentum.
And I said yesterday, there's, the Cowboys, for me,
in the last 15 years,
I have the same opinion every year on them.
They're pretty good.
They'll have like one star, six or seven pretty good players, and they're pretty good.
So he was on a Dallas radio station this week, and he was very upbeat about this year.
First time in my career, I can say I felt like consecutive seasons are building, where going back to 21, we've been able to build.
We built that year, and then now we can build again, and I think that's the best real chance that you have of making it.
You're excited about the details, the changes that we've had on the offense and just the team,
and I'm looking forward to it with a lot of excitement.
Okay, so I tried to be, I looked at Dallas's schedule today.
They're over-under-win total, I think, is at nine and a half,
and that's exactly what it should be.
I'm not sure if I take the over or under, probably the under at nine.
But I looked, and I said to myself, there are nine games Dallas has the better quarterback.
Giants, Arizona early, New England, San Francisco.
Giants again, Carolina, Washington, Seattle and Washington.
Nine games, I believe they absolutely have the better quarterback.
In eight games, they probably don't.
Jets and Aaron Rogers, Chargers, Justin Herbert, Ram Stafford, Philadelphia twice, Jalen Hertz, Josh Allen Buffalo,
Jared Goff is better than Dak, I'm sorry, and at Miami and Tua.
I'm sorry, Tua with those weapons and that coach is going to be a more productive quarter.
So in nine games, better quarterback, eight games probably not, meaning they'll win a game or two
that'll surprise me, and they'll lose a game or two that will surprise me.
But let's be as clear as we can if Mike McCarthy is a B to a B plus coach and DAC is a B to a B plus
quarterback.
That feels incredibly fair.
Dallas is not nearly as good as Philadelphia on any offensive unit.
And I could argue not superior on any defensive unit.
That's reasonable too.
They're over under as nine and a half.
I'd take the under.
Some would take the over, but that's about what they are.
And if that's what they are, not as good as Philadelphia and a nine or a ten win team,
can Dallas with a B to a B plus coach and a B to a B plus quarterback win three road
playoff games to get to a Super Bowl and three road games and a neutral game
to win a Super Bowl.
I believe the answer is no.
That's what they are.
Nine games better quarterback.
Eight games, less talented quarterback.
To win one, it'll surprise you.
Lose one that'll bum you out if you're a cowboy fan.
B to a B plus coach quarterback, they're going to have to because there are no question.
They're inferior to Philadelphia.
No question.
Maybe it coached, that's not fair yet, though.
Can they win three road playoffs?
half games. I do not believe B2B plus coaches and quarterbacks do that in the NFL in
2023. I don't. So there you go. We're going to keep you updated. There is a mosquito around
this studio this morning that is haunting me. We'll keep you updated on the draft rumors. It is getting
as a, it's getting very tasty. You want one that just happened from Wojj? Oh, I want this.
The Lakers are acquiring the 40th pick from the Pacers for 47 and cash. So,
they move up seven spots. So now the Lakers have the 40. And they have 17. Now you wonder,
can they package that to do more of movement up? Or do they see somebody at 40 that they really
like the nodes that won't be there at 47? Lakers making moves in the margins. So they have now...
And they've crushed the draft. Let's be real. Since those bad picks at the top, not bad, but Ingram
and Lanzo, this guy didn't pop, Randall. Well, Ingram's a good player. Yeah, he wasn't great with
the Lakers. I'm talking about like the undrafted guys, like the Austin Reeves, Caruso.
I did flip Brandon Ingram for Anthony Davis.
That was pretty good.
Yeah.
I think Brandon Ingram all pushed back was a good draft pick.
I think he is a good draft pick.
I got people telling me that Charlotte should want Ingram and not Zion.
Brandon Ingram was a one-time All-Star.
I would do your bust list of NBA drop-top picks.
No way.
I would take Brandon Ingram over Zion.
Not for merchandising, but for consistency of game.
Okay.
Absolutely.
I guess we'll have to talk about that later.
I'd rather have a guy that needs 10 more pounds.
Then it could lose four.
You'd rather have averaged than Superstar.
It's the hurt.
