Starting point is 00:00:00 This is an I-Heart podcast. Guaranteed Human. Another podcast from some SNL, late-night comedy guy, not quite. Unhumor me with Robert Smygel and friends. Me and hilarious guests from Bob Odenkirk to David Letterman help make you funnier. This week, my guest, SNL's Mikey Day and head writer, Streeter Seidel, help an a cappella band with their between songs banter.
Starting point is 00:00:23 Where does your group perform? We do some retirement homes. Those people are starving for banter. Listen to humor me with Robert Smigel and friends on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Imagine an Olympics where doping is not only legal, but encouraged. It's the enhanced games. Some call it grotesque.
Starting point is 00:00:42 Others say it's unleashing human potential. Either way, the podcast's Superhuman documented it all, embedded in the games and with the athletes for a full year. Within probably 10 days, I'd put on 10 pounds. I was having trouble stopping the muscle growth. Listen to Superhuman on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Hey, this is Robert from the Stuff to Blow Your Mind podcast. Joe and I are both lifelong Star Wars fan, so we're celebrating May the 4th with a brand new week of fun, thought-provoking Star Wars-related episodes.
Starting point is 00:01:16 Join us as we tackle science and culture topics from a galaxy far, far away, such as the biology of taun tons and wampas on the ice planet hot, or the practicality and corporate business sense of the Sith rule. of two. Listen to Stuff to Bole Your Mind on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Thanks for listening to The Heard podcast. Be sure to catch us live every weekday on Fox Sports Radio in noon to 3 Eastern, 9 a.m. to noon Pacific. Starting point is 00:01:59 Oh, it's a Wednesday. Percolating stories abound. It's the hurt. Live in L.A., wherever you may be and however you may be listening, thanks for making us part of your day. J. Mack is joining as always. You know, J.Mack, sometimes, even if you have a good job, there are days. Maybe you're not satisfied at work. Maybe you're unhappy.
Starting point is 00:02:32 You read my mind. But there are danger signs if you and I ever got resentful toward an employer. Right? No, Buena. Not good. And that's where we start our show today. There is a difference. I have a great job.
Starting point is 00:02:49 This is what I wanted to do when I was eight years old. I'm the luckiest guy in the world. Totally grateful. But I've had days I'm unhappy. Maybe there's a producer, there's a graphic, there's a boss, something is off. I'm unhappy. But that's okay. That's a real life experience.
Starting point is 00:03:08 That's called a professional career. The best lawyers have bad days. The best doctors have bad days. The best educators have bad days. They're unhappy. You're in trouble, though, when those really good employees get resentful, feel like they're taken advantage of. and there is a huge gap between unhappy. I'm unhappy.
Starting point is 00:03:31 And I'm resentful. Thankfully, I'm not the latter. But I've been the former many times in my career for a day for a week. Unhappy. So Sequin Barclay, according to sources this morning, Diana Rusini, may sit out week one against the Cowboys. She says it's definitely on the table. He's resentful. So once you handed Daniel Jones 40 million a year for four years,
Starting point is 00:03:54 it changed the temperature in the room. You can never fool the players. Saquan Barclay, not the quarterback, is the most important part of the offense. And I'll give you an example. Look at Daniel Jones numbers starting with Saquan Barclay. He ain't bad. 65 passer rating, 90, it's a completion percentage,
Starting point is 00:04:15 91 passer rating with Saquan Barclay. It drops like a rock without Saquan Barkley to 77. more picks than touchdowns. So Daniel Jones is reliant on Saquan Barclay. Daniel Jones got the bag. Barclay has offered a franchise tag. Now, nobody would deny that every quarterback is probably better with a strong run game, although sometimes it's a committee of running backs.
Starting point is 00:04:50 But let me give you a quarterback Kirk Cousins, because I know what you're saying. well, Colin, everybody needs, everybody's better. Let's take Kirk Cousins. With Dalvin Cook, a very good back, 98 passer rating. Without Dalvin, 109. Joe Mixon's excellent. But Joe Burrell's passer rating doesn't change with or without Mixon. Justin Herbert's actually better without Austin Echler passer rating.
Starting point is 00:05:21 The Chargers see that. So to the Viking. That's why the Vikings let Cook go and why the Chargers don't want to re-sign Echler at his money and why, by the way, Joe Mixon took a pay cut. Now, we know Burroughs is a superstar and Herbert could be and Cousins is B-plus. It's okay that Daniel Jones is better. All those three are not, by the way. cousins, Herbert, Borough aren't necessarily better with a running back.
Starting point is 00:05:57 It would be okay if Daniel Jones was better with Sequin Barclay, but he's reliant on him. He's got bad numbers for a backup without him. And so you can only franchise tag one player, right? So I would have franchise tagged Daniel Jones because it's a more valuable position. And then there would have been some pressure to sign Seekuan Barclay. But I would have said, hey, I didn't give the bag to the quarterback, the most important position in football. And Barclay would have been unhappy. That's what I would have done.
Starting point is 00:06:39 I would have franchise tag the quarterback and had to deal with an unhappy, Seacuan Barclay. And I would still have all sorts of team flexibility on a franchise tag to the quarterback. Let's see Daniel Jones this year, second year with dayball with a much tougher schedule. Then we'll make a decision. But when you gave the bag to Jones, and the only option now is a one-year deal for the centerpiece of the offense, that's the difference between unhappy and resentment. I don't think Barclay would be resentful if you gave Daniel Jones a franchise tag. I don't think he'd be resentful.
Starting point is 00:07:22 I think he'd be unhappy. He'd want the big contract, and there would be pressure on them. But you wouldn't be trapped for four years with Daniel Jones. You wouldn't be trapped, and you'd have an unhappy running back. He'll have the league's running backs are unhappy. It's analytics. It's the way the world works now. But Albert Breer talked about this very sentiment yesterday on the show.
Starting point is 00:07:43 It's obviously a player who's been through what Sequin's been through and playing five years to the team going through the injuries he went through and then committing to a new program and helping them get not only a better, you know, a better season in 2022, but also helping them, you know,
Starting point is 00:07:59 develop a better quarterback in Daniel Jones. That guy's going to feel like something's owed to him. Yep. Ode to him is resentment. That's why I said, the minute you gave Daniel that money, you change the temperature in the room. Change the temperature in the room.
Starting point is 00:08:19 Now, Seekwan's like, I make that. guy? You gave him the bag? They say it's called seeing around corners for business people. See it can you see what's going to happen six months down the road or a year down the road when you make big business decisions. This was inevitable. If I was a GM, my rule has always been very simple. Pay huge money rarely, very infrequently. But pay it to players who are great. Daniel Jones is not only not great, he's completely reliant to be good on Sequin Barclay. And there's your resentment.
Starting point is 00:09:02 Okay, so I want to talk about Justin Fields. I said earlier this week, I think of all the quarterbacks in the NFL that have the most pressure, it's not on DAC. It's on Justin Fields. He's 5 and 20 and 25 stars. And for years and years, when I criticize Baker Mayfield, I believe, Many of you in the audience, though not all, I did have a lot of supporters, but many of you in the audience confused ego for confidence. I thought Baker had too much ego. I also said that about Johnny Mansell.
Starting point is 00:09:37 He had too much ego. You guys would say it's Hutzpaw. I love my quarterback to be confident. So do I. Mahomes is. He has self-awareness. Brady, Peyton Manning, Justin Herbert, Burrow. Lamar Jackson, they have confidence.
Starting point is 00:09:56 I don't see their ego. I don't see Lamar's ego. I don't see Josh Allen's ego. I saw it with Baker every Wednesday at the podium. I saw it with Manzell. It matters. You have for years and years, many of you have told me it doesn't matter. And I always say with young quarterbacks,
Starting point is 00:10:13 when I start seeing the drip, drip, drip, that's the term I use. The faucets leaking. Drip, drip, drip. One little thing, that little thing, that little thing. it all matters at quarterback. It doesn't all matter at corner, middle linebacker, edge rusher, guard running back. I don't hold them to the same standards. But at quarterback, you're the face of the franchise and you're the coach on the field. So I'm going to hold you to a much higher standard of self-awareness and confidence over ego or hutzpah. And so this is not the end of the world.
Starting point is 00:10:47 It's 5%. But I don't love it for a quarterback that's 5 and 20. And right now is closer to a bust than a star. It was a podcast. Justin Fields was asked by the host. A question. Watch for yourself. If you had to rank your top five quarterbacks in regards to running. In regards to running?
Starting point is 00:11:12 Yeah. And you can throw your seven to list too. Oh, I am. Because I definitely think I am. No order. But I got to go ahead. A boy Mike Vic. Yep.
Starting point is 00:11:19 Got to go with Tamm. Lamar, of course. Yeah. Me and then final Steve Young too Steve Young Shouts out to Steve Young
Starting point is 00:11:31 Lamar's an MVP Cam's an MVP Vicks a four-time Pro Bowler Steve Young's a Super Bowl winner Justin Fields is 5 and 20 You should have said Can we make it a top four Or said I'd love to be there
Starting point is 00:11:44 Now you can argue I don't think he's one of the top five running quarterbacks You'd get banged up, can't win games It's not the end of the world MVP, MVP, four-time Pro Bowlder, Super Bowl winner, bust. I just want a better answer. Not the end of the world.
Starting point is 00:12:04 Either was Baker Mayfield calling out Duke Johnson the running back of the medical staff. I don't know. J. Mack rolls his eyes. It ain't that big of a deal. But I got a guy with a quarterback rating in the 70s, a guy that's now hurt. this season with a 10-game losing streak. By the way, who would I put in that list? Russell Wilson, you know, Super Bowl winner.
Starting point is 00:12:30 I'm sorry, the list of five best running quarterbacks. If you're a great running quarterback, you win games. You don't win five out of 25. I don't know. I've always been 60-40 on Justin Fields is going to succeed. I'm coming back 5%, J-MAC. I'm 55-45. he's going to succeed.
Starting point is 00:12:54 I'm pulling back 5%. Lack a little self-awareness. The answer should have been, how about I name four? If you're throwing Russell Wilson in there, then you're like, yeah, they're all winners. I don't know. Just me.
Starting point is 00:13:10 I know Chicago will go crazy. But right now, Justin Fields is a bust. He's 5 and 20. 10-game losing streak. Pass a rating in the 70s. I mean, let me ask you right now. Last year, was he not even? Easley the worst quarterback in the division?
Starting point is 00:13:23 It's not Aaron. Wasn't Goff. Wasn't Kirk Cousins. He was the fourth best quarterback last time this division played. Am I wrong? Now, he may be better than Jordan Love, but right now he doesn't have golfs been to a Super Bowl. You're not Kirk Cousins. Right now he's a YouTube quarterback.
Starting point is 00:13:40 His highlights are great. 79 passer rating 5 and 20. Not to say it on Baylon. Still think it's 55, 45, 45 he's going to succeed. drip, drip, drip, drip, drip. Set it for three years on Baker. You argued every time. I set it for a year on Mansell.
Starting point is 00:14:00 I set it for several years on James. Drip, drip. Everything counts. I mean, ask yourself, if you were asking me, and I'd literally been doing this for three years, terrible ratings. And you said, hey, who is the strongest voice that's ever done sports talk radio?
Starting point is 00:14:20 and I went, you know, bub-da-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba. You know, they just named all these successful people. And I went, hey, me! You'd be like, well, you have some good points, but there's no results to back up that. I mean, by the way, I don't have a problem with Cam. And I didn't love Cam.
Starting point is 00:14:38 You can put Camar on that list. You can put Lamar on that list, absolutely. You absolutely put Vic on it. I'd put Steve Young on the list. But I'd go Russell Wilson. Hell, Kyler Marine had the playoffs. There's a lot of guys that have moved around. Brett Far moved.
Starting point is 00:14:50 Big Ben. moved. Five and 20. J-MAC, five and 20. 25 games, NFL lost 20. We should run that tape back. It was the best running quarterbacks in NFL history. Not the best running winning quarterbacks. Well, if you're great at running,
Starting point is 00:15:06 you win. Josh Allen's great at running, he wins. Russell's great at running, he wins. Kyler was great at running. He made the playoffs. Because you know I like to come prepared. I have a couple stats for you. All right. Over 1100 yards rushing for Mr. Fields last year. Russell Wilson's top of ever, 849. He was a good running quarterback early in his career. Last year, Justin Fields had four rushes alone that were 50 yards or more. He's an electrifying runner. And undeniably,
Starting point is 00:15:32 one of the five best running quarterbacks in NFL history. It's not even a question. We're just talking about running. Now, Randall Cunningham has a strong case to get into discussion. By the way, my bad. Randall should be in the top five. Randall Cunningham's definitely in there. He was a really fun of life. But wouldn't you just think, self-awareness? Randall's a great one. Randall, my bad, Randall should be top five. Wouldn't you think, though, as I answer this, I'm naming MVP's and Super Bowl winners, I probably shouldn't put myself in. Even if I believe it, if you're a college football coach, you name the top five coaches.
Starting point is 00:16:04 Even if you believe you are, this was the Baker mistake. Self-awareness clicks in. I'm not going to put myself on the list with Sabin, Pete Carroll, Mac Brown. Like that's one of those moments. You may be. There's a lot of things we believe. We don't say them. I got DM last night by somebody a sports media critic.
Starting point is 00:16:19 I said, I can think this. I'm not saying it publicly. There's a lot of things you say publicly, and there's a lot of things you can think. If Justin feels that way, but at 5 and 20, you don't want to put yourself in a list with unbelievable talent. Just in running. But I actually think, you know, Justin Fields has way bigger upside than Baker Mayfield. I know Baker won. I don't.
Starting point is 00:16:41 I don't doubt that. That's a different argument. I don't doubt that at all. I mean, I just, we've seen him on pretty bad. bad teams in Chicago. I will add, they were one and seven in one score games last year. And, oh, by the way, the Bears faced one of the toughest schedules in the league where, are you ready for this? Twelve of their opponents hit the win total over last year. Chicago had a tough schedule. This is at least, at least a seven win team this year.
Starting point is 00:17:07 Okay. All I said, don't overreact. I'm pulling back on Justin five percent. I was six. We're doing the opposite. I'm in. I was 60-40. I think you'll make it. I'm 55-40. I think in that moment when you answer it, you have to go, oh, hell, I'm 5 and 20. I'm not putting myself in any top five list for anything. I'm going to go into this season and say, I have not earned it. It's just a little thing.
Starting point is 00:17:32 But all the fanboys out there, you defended Baker and James and Mansell. And I told you, quarterbacks, that Wednesday press conference, those offseason comments. This is like a video blog type show. Come on, cut the guy some slack. You know, I am trying to win over Chicago. after, you know, kind of bombing Chicago. I love Chicago and am beloved when I go there. Yes.
Starting point is 00:17:57 Moved by people. They love you there, but not after these Justin Fields comments. I mean, by the way, you're high on C.J. Strout. Are you not coming into this season? No, I think his comp is Jared Goff. I do not see a lot of juice with him. With Justin, I see juice. He's a YouTube quarterback.
Starting point is 00:18:14 But I don't see completing the football on a consistent basis. Now, you can use all the excuses you want, but that's fine. That's what they do in New York with Daniel Jones. Again, the internet will overreact because it's July and they don't want to do the content. I'm just telling you, you cannot put yourself in any top five list of a quarterback when you are five and 20 with a passer rating in the 70s. Who do you feel better about going into this season? By the way, the guy asked him, Daniel Jones.
Starting point is 00:18:42 The guy asked him, who are the best five running quarterbacks? You know what he should have said? Well, I got the running part down, not the quarterback part. because I'm 5 and 20. I mean, he's like a 24-year-old kid, dude. What do you expect? Come on. What kind of awareness did you have at 24?
Starting point is 00:18:57 People are asking you, you're a hot shot, baseball announcer, local TV guy. I was humble. Yeah, right, at 24. Grateful, humble, and making $7,000 a year. Lies. You were very arrogant, just like Justin Field. And I want my quarterback having a little confidence,
Starting point is 00:19:14 little cockiness, a little bit. I don't. I don't. I don't want my quarterback to be cocky. I want him to be Mahomes, confident, without cocky. Well, Mahomes is one of what? I'm just telling you, you know, maybe I have bigger standards than you, I guess. Okay, coming up next, this is interesting because everybody's complaining about the running backs.
Starting point is 00:19:37 I don't know why suddenly the world feels so sorry for running backs. But there's another player at another position that I'm not going to defend him either. He's a Dallas cowboy. and he wants to get paid and he wants a new deal. And I'll talk about that next. Be sure to catch live editions of the herd weekdays in noon Eastern, 9 a.m. Pacific on Fox Sports Radio, FS1 and the IHeart Radio app. Imagine an Olympics where doping is not only legal but encouraged.
Starting point is 00:20:05 It's the enhanced games. Some call it grotesque. Others say it's unleashing human potential. Either way, the podcast's Superhuman documented it all, embedded in the games and with the athletes for a full year. Within probably 10 days, I'd put on 10 pounds. I was having trouble stopping the muscle growth. Listen to Superhuman on the I-Hard Radio app, Apple Podcasts,
Starting point is 00:20:28 or wherever you get your podcasts. A win is a win. A win is a win. I don't care what I'm saying. Yep, that's me, Cliver Taylor the 4th. You might have seen the skits, the reactions, my journey from basketball to college football, or my career in sports media.
Starting point is 00:20:44 Well, somewhere along the way, this platform became bigger, than I ever imagined. And now I'm bringing all of that excitement to my brand new podcast, The Clifford Show. This is a place for raw, unfiltered conversations with some of your favorite athletes, creators, and voices
Starting point is 00:20:57 that not only deserve to be heard, but celebrated. One week, I'll take you behind the scenes of the biggest moments in sports and entertainment, and the next we'll talk about life, mental health, purpose, and even music. The Clifford Show isn't just a podcast.
Starting point is 00:21:11 It's a space for honest conversations, stories that don't always get told, and for people who are chasing something bigger. So if you've ever supported me or you're just chasing down a dream, this is right where you need to be. Listen to the Clifford show on the IHeart radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcast. And for more behind the scenes, follow at Clifford and at TikTok Podcast Network on TikTok. Do you remember when Diana Ross double-tap Little Kim's boobs at the VMAs? Or when Kanye said that George Bush didn't like black people. I know what you're thinking.
Starting point is 00:21:42 What the hell does George Bush got to do with Little Kim? Well, you can find out on the look back at it podcast. I'm Sam J. And I'm Alex English. Each episode, we pick it here, unpack what went down, and try to make sense of how we survived it, including a recent episode with Mark Lamont Hill, waxing all about crack in the 80s. To be clear, 84 is big to me, not just because of crack. I'm down to talk about crack on day, but yeah, yeah, yeah. But just so y'all know. I mean, at this point, Mark, this is the second episode where we've discussed crack, so I'm starting to see there's a through line. We also have AIDS on the table right now, so. Thank you for finishing that sentence.
Starting point is 00:22:18 I don't think there's a more important year for black people. Really? Yeah. For me, it's one of the most important years for black people in American history. Listen to look back at it on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. You know, I was just thinking about this, J-Mack. If you're five and top 20 as a quarterback in the NFL, you cannot put yourself on any all-time great list. Most fashionable, best-looking, best arm, best-arm, best-react.
Starting point is 00:22:45 runner, best weightlifter. If you're 5 and 20, and he asks you, hey, all-time list of blank, you can't be in it. If you're an accountant and you've been sued eight times, you're a lawyer and never won a case, a talk show host never got ratings. And they ask you about any list, you can't put yourself in it. New rule in the show. Five and 20, doesn't matter. Run, arm, good-looking, swiftness, cl-cliff, you're not on the list.
Starting point is 00:23:13 Five and 20. If he goes 0 and 3 to start, people in that facility will raise their hands and say, guys, we have to drive from our quarterback. Like that's it. Don't kid yourself. By Thanksgiving, this organization is going to make their mind up on this. New rule for quarterbacks on this show. If you're 5 and 20 to start your career, you can never put yourself in any top five list of anything. Self-awareness, read the room, bad.
Starting point is 00:23:41 Bears open at home against Jordan Love. then they travel to Tampa. So there is a world where they're 2 and 0 to start the season. Certainly. Then they have the loss at KC. Right? They're not winning that.
Starting point is 00:23:54 And then they host Denver and what could be winnable, maybe. We'll see. That's a tough secondary for Justin Fields. And what's the next one? At Washington should be a W, but you never know. It's tough to just walk into whatever that stadium is. Especially when you're 5 and 20. Yeah. And Minnesota, Raiders,
Starting point is 00:24:10 listen, that's not a tough schedule out of the game. And stop saying, Justin Fields is 5 and 20. Okay? I don't know. All right. Go on. Go on.
Starting point is 00:24:20 So all of you have such great sympathy for running backs at supply and demand. They were overpaid for most of my life. Now, many think they're underpaid. Didn't hear anybody belly aching about safeties and guards and tight ends not getting paid for years when they were Ronnie Lott and Ed Reed and Troy Polamalu and Grong. I never heard anybody belly aching, but for some reason everybody feels such great sympathy for running backs. The great ones get paid. McCaffrey got paid, Derek Henry got paid, Seyquan Barkley, third highest paid running back since he entered the league.
Starting point is 00:24:50 They're getting paid, just not as much as they want. But I saw where all pro-guard captain Zach Martin of the Cowboys wants to restructure his deal. So in any business, including pro sports, you can go about it two ways. Companies will offer longer-term deals, more security. Or you can go, shorter contracts, bet on yourself, get right back to the market. That's what I've done in my career.
Starting point is 00:25:20 I like shorter contracts, bet on myself, and renegotiate in three years. That's the way I think you should do it. So, Zach Martin actually got both. Jerry gave him a six-year deal and made him the highest-paid guard by 20 million when he got the deal four years ago, 2018. And now with two years left, he wants to renegotiate. Well, Colin, he has lived up to his contract. You want a cookie? That's how business works. They paid him top of the market.
Starting point is 00:25:51 He delivered top of the market. You don't get bonuses. That's how business works. Colin, owners can cut players at any time. Yes, after they've been paid according to the language of the contract, they agreed to sign. That's how business works. This is not the NBA. Zach Martin got the security and the bad.
Starting point is 00:26:11 Well, right now he's making $7 million less. Right now, Mahomes isn't the highest paid quarterback in the league. Mahomes said, I want security and to be near the top of the market. And Patrick's never waffled. Patrick Mahomes has never wavered. Patrick said, I want the security for the rest of my life. I'll take 10 years. Realizing, you know, three or four years into this, I'll be the third,
Starting point is 00:26:38 four, fifth, sixth highest paid quarterback. So if I'm Jerry Jones, I feel no guilt. What happened to living up to a contract? Now, if he came in next year and was a pro-Boulder again, that's when you have to sit down. He'll be 34 at that time. But generally the way it works, you take the years. Magic Johnson signed a 25-year, $25 million economy.
Starting point is 00:27:02 You take the years, or you do the short contract and bet on yourself. I'm good with either. You do whatever you want. But Zach got both. And now two years left, he's upset because he's not the highest paid guard. Complain to your agent. Your agent is paid to inform you. That's how it works.
Starting point is 00:27:23 Do you know who the highest paid quarterback was in 2018? Matt Ryan. It's not now. If you take six years, I can assure you in every sport, in every law office, in every sales corporation, every CEO. If you take six years by year three or four, you're not going to be the highest paid. But you have to know that going in.
Starting point is 00:27:45 And if you don't, that's an agent's job to tell you. That's why I've never taken a six, seven year contract. Because I don't want to be resentful three years when I've outperformed it. Give me the short one. But Jerry's got no reason to be guilty here. He gave him length and the bag. And what you're seeing now is econ 101. 75 way, 75% through the contract,
Starting point is 00:28:10 You're not going to be the highest paid person in your position. You were by a lot, but you won't be halfway or 75% into the contract. That's on the agent. That's not on Jerry. Jay Mack with the news. No, no, no, no, turn on the news. This is the herd line news. So the most exciting time in July has happened, and teams are starting to report for training
Starting point is 00:28:34 camp, starting with the New York Jets, Colin, we have the Hall of Fame game 15. days away and look who showed up to training camp at the Jets facility. Aaron Rogers, looking, we got a picture of it, I think. Yeah. Look at that. Looks pretty happy. He looks. Looks rugged. I didn't know he had
Starting point is 00:28:54 that many arm tattoos, did you? Well, Aaron is, uh, over the last several years, has done a lot of exploration personally. Oh, I like that. Exploration. I think he's Aaron's, uh, oh, look at they, did they scrub them off for the team picture? No, it's not AI generated. The arm's kind of tucked and he's wearing that like wristband. I don't love the Jets uniform in Aaron.
Starting point is 00:29:16 I don't. I don't love how it looks. I'll be honest with you. But be that as it may, he's a handsome guy and so he'll be fine. He wore a different shade of green for like. I know, but I like the other one more. This one looks forced. Of course you do.
Starting point is 00:29:28 Looks forced. He looks uncomfortable. Just standing there. Just going to put this out there again. They win that opener against Buffalo. It's game on on this show. We will be doing. You know what? You're predicting what's going to happen. I'm predicting I'm going to be sick on that Tuesday.
Starting point is 00:29:45 I may not be able to be here. Oh, that's even better. I'll host the damn thing. I'll just be coming on jets for three hours. That is going to be the biggest game in the history of our show together. That's the biggest game. We have the biggest hard knocks probably ever. I think people would agree. Aaron Rogers, the interest in him, the New York. I'm talking about in the history of our show. We've only been together, what, six months or whatever it is, five months, whatever it is. I don't know. 11 months? Have we? We started like last August.
Starting point is 00:30:13 Is that one of those like when time goes by fast when you're having fun? Is that what you're trying to say? I thought we just started. I have no idea. So, but this will be the biggest moment in the show will be the Jets Buffalo game. Because, I mean, it will be. Well, if they win, awesome. If they lose, it's not a big deal.
Starting point is 00:30:29 It's not a big deal. We got a long season ahead of us. Have we been together 11 months? I think I started last August. Yeah. I thought it was like, yeah, okay, I guess. I thought it was like a few months ago. Yeah, you are getting old.
Starting point is 00:30:42 I don't know. Memory. All right, now let's move on to, so ESPN ranked running backs yesterday, and today they have wide receivers. I tried to find issues with this list, but it's pretty solid. I honestly saw this list this morning. I did not put it in the show. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:30:57 It's the only list in the history of my career. I agree one through 10. I mean, I don't agree necessarily on the order, but I, like, I would put A.J. Brown ahead of Diggs. A.J. Brown goes to the Eagles, and they go to the Super Bowl. Come on. massive for that massive. There are moments. I'm not sure A.J. Brown is the best receiver on his team. DeVante Smith is that good. Demonte Smith is great. He has been... He's very good. Let's not
Starting point is 00:31:21 go great. Scary Terry McLaurin is in there. If I expected someone to drop down on this list, Devante Adams, mostly because of the quarterback. Now that's the other thing. Look at the quarterbacks these guys have. Joe Burrow, Kirk Cousins. Where's a Kansas City Chief? Oh, Oh, there is no one. No, T's on there. Oh, interesting. Oh, 49ers. Oh, yeah.
Starting point is 00:31:44 Interesting. No Debo Samuel? No, he's not in the top ten. Absolutely not. He's good after the catch. He's not a top ten receiver. No. This list is really good.
Starting point is 00:31:57 Debo Samuel's not a top ten receiver. No. In fact, his contract is built kind of as a receiver that we're going to ask to occasionally carry the ball. That's why he complained about it. Yeah, you always talk. He's a multi-functional, multi-service receiver. He does a lot. Don't we like those people? I did this thing last week on the show. Like, when I came into
Starting point is 00:32:22 media, I was like writing for a newspaper. Now you can't just write. You got to be able to podcast, social media. You can. You got to do streaming. You got to do TV. You got to do everything. And Debo Samuel literally does everything. Hey, we're going to line you up in the backfield. Debo doesn't have the breakaway speed of some of these. Debo gets banged up because he's physical. He's a different kind of receiver. I don't put Debo. If you say, Jason, you have your choice.
Starting point is 00:32:45 C.D. Lamb for the Cowboys or Debo? It's Debo in a heartbeat. No, it's C.D. Lamb. No. See, these guys work anywhere. He is perfect in Kyle Shanahan's system. Debo's not going to work anywhere in the league. You put Debo Samuel with the Jets last year, Mike White, and Zach Wilson, and he literally
Starting point is 00:33:06 he'd be the second best receiver on that team to that rookie. Garrett Wilson? Would be a better... A thousand yards of the bads quarterbacks? I would put Garrett Wilson closer to this top ten than Debo Samuel. And I like Debo. Well, yeah, you must love Debo Samuel. But he is part of that Kyle Shanahan offense.
Starting point is 00:33:25 That's a huge element to him. Kyle Shanahan has made... By the way, Trent Williams for the Niners, any offense, he's great. McCaffrey works everywhere. Kettle works everywhere. Whittle works everywhere. Debo, to some degree, 20, 25% is a product of Shanahan. I don't know, man.
Starting point is 00:33:42 Debo's the kind of guy. You get the ball to him in space. He's not only breaking tackles and speed, but he's running through people. He had a bad year, and they went to the NFC championship. If C.D. Lam has a bad year. He's had some injuries. That's the only, that's the only not against him. These guys, show up every Sunday.
Starting point is 00:33:58 I like Debo, but these are elite. McClorin's doing it. Look at his quarterbacks. Devo Samuel had Brock Purdy the last pick in the draft. What are you talking about? Listen, you've got to be nicer to Debo Samuel. This is one of the best... Honestly, he is one of the most talented players in the entire league.
Starting point is 00:34:19 Honestly, he could do anything. Literally, backfield, slot out wide. I would not be surprised if he was like the emergency quarterback on the Niners. The list is top 10 wide receivers, not top 10 most versatile performers in Kyle's office. Anyway, a lot of arguing here. By the way, let's rename this to top 10 guys that can, do the most. It's the top 10 wide receiver talents. Debo's not even close to Justin Jefferson, Jamar Chase, Devante Adams, Cooper Cup. He's not as good on routes. He's just not as good.
Starting point is 00:34:50 Terry McLaurin's absolutely a better receiver. I know we have a lot of 49ers fans who watch this show. Listen, they are going to be coming after you hard. No, go there. Debo's not even close to number one. If you told me Terry McLaren, go run routes or Debo, McClorn, this is a wide receiver list. That's all this is. And these, not, not top 10 guys who could potentially take a carry out of the backfield,
Starting point is 00:35:16 do a jet sweep, break tackles. That's not what the list is. It's basically, Tyreek Hill does all that. At any rate, all right, let's move on. And he's a great receiver.
Starting point is 00:35:26 Does that and he's super fast. That's all he is. Come on. He's got massive numbers. I get it. He's super fast. Yeah. All the Flash was was super fast.
Starting point is 00:35:36 The. All Superman could do is fly and be the strongest man in the world. That was all he could do. Everything. Okay, final story reports yesterday of the fractured relationship between Hardin and Daryl Mory, the 10-time All-Star wants to trade out of Philly yesterday. Daryl Mory pressed because he's taking so much heat, gave an update on Hardin's current trade market. If we don't get either a very good player or something that we can turn into a very good player,
Starting point is 00:36:02 then we're just not going to do it. And so if James were to turn his mind around, we would all be thrilled. You heard Joel's comments about that. But at this moment, he does prefer to be traded and we're attempting to honor that. He's going to the clippers. They just don't want to give up. I keep hearing Dames going to the heat. Hardin's going to the cliques.
Starting point is 00:36:24 They are. Do you know how long things take to happen? These are complicated negotiations. Does any? Nothing. Fabric of your being get a little annoyed with guys. in the NBA just saying, I won out like every two years. I don't love it. I don't think it's great in relation to the fans and how the fans reflect on the sport.
Starting point is 00:36:46 I don't love it. I've said the football culture is superior to the basketball culture. I do think international soccer in the NBA are star-driven sports, so you have to understand they are really valuable. I have no problem with LeBron bouncing around or Kevin Graham. Yeah, yeah, agree. But I think my problem with Hardin, as I said yesterday on the show, is what do I get out of it? because you're nothing in May in June. I don't, if you give me, like, Dame has had good Mays and LeBron and Durant, if you deliver in May. The Dave's done one. This is like Hardin's, what, third?
Starting point is 00:37:17 87th year in the league and disappointing me in May. That's what it is. I'm a hardened demand. What do I get for it? You weren't out of Houston? Kauai's made demands. I got stuff for it. I got titles for it.
Starting point is 00:37:27 You got to give me May. This whole league is the last two weeks of April, May and the first two weeks of June. That's the whole league. I don't give a rip about Tuesday in February. The whole league is April, May, and early June. What do I get from him? Disappointment. So I don't mind players.
Starting point is 00:37:42 If Messi, Rinaldo. You do it once. I get it. Fine. Okay. Kauai Leonard demanded out of San Antonio. Got it. Great.
Starting point is 00:37:52 James Warner is on his third trade demand in like four years. I know. Like this is a little, Kyrie Irving. Like, can we just not do this? Like every freaking year? I know. I know. It's like a little annoying.
Starting point is 00:38:01 Yes, it is. And I don't think it's fair to fans. I think it's, you know, you make the team hostage and the fans, therefore, vis-a-vis become hostage. You're like you're just sitting there all the time. So I'm done with Hardin. I don't even read the stories anymore. I just, I'm over it. And you and I argued for 10 minutes yesterday, I will argue that as Maxie's gotten better,
Starting point is 00:38:22 that Embeded Maxie Harris and really nice, solid Norman Powell's Terrence Mann rotational players, it's a better basketball. I thought you were going to bring up Tobias Harris again, your love affair with the swing man of the 19.3MD guy. Wow, 19 a game. That's impressive. You're defending 5 and 20 Justin Fields. I'm defending borderline all-star Tobias Harris.
Starting point is 00:38:47 Who's crazy? Technically, I'm defending Debo Samuel's greatness, but, you know, I digress. All right, J-Mack with the news. Well, that's the news. And thanks for stopping by. The Hurd-Lie News. I even have baseball talk on the show today. There's a lot of stuff out there.
Starting point is 00:39:03 There's a lot. Be sure to catch live editions of the herd weekdays in noon Eastern 9 a.m. Pacific. Hey, what's up, everybody? It's me three-time Pro Bowl of LaVar Arrington, and I couldn't be more excited to announce a new podcast called Up on Game. What is Up on Game, you ask? Along with my fellow Pro Bowler, T.J. Hushman Zata and Super Bowl champion. Yep, that's right.
Starting point is 00:39:26 Plexico Burris. You can only name a show with that type of talent on it. Up on Game. We're going to be sharing our real. life experiences loaded with teachable moments. Listen to Up On Game with me, LaVore Arrington, T.J. Hushmanzada, and Plexico Birds on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcast from. Starting point is 00:41:22 Do you remember when Diana Ross double-tapped Little Kim's boobs at the VMAs? Or when Kanye said that George Bush didn't like black people. I know what you're thinking. What the hell does George Bush got to do a little kill? Well, you can find out on the Look Back at it podcast. I'm Sam J. And I'm Alex English. Each episode, we pick it here, unpack what went down, and try to make sense of how we survived it.
Starting point is 00:41:44 Including a recent episode with Mark Lamont Hill, waxing all about crack in the 80s. To be clear, 84's big to me, not just because of crack. I'm down to talk about crack all day, but just so y'all know. I mean, at this point, Mark, this is the second episode where we've discussed cracks. I'm starting to see that there's a through line. We also have AIDS on the table right now. Thank you for finishing that sentence. I don't think there's a more important year for black people.
Starting point is 00:42:11 Really? Yeah. For me, it's one of the most important years for black people in American history. Listen to look back at it on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. In two days, the U.S. women's national team begins their quest for a historic World Cup three-pe. Alex Morgan and Company face Vietnam Friday at 9 Eastern only on Fox. So the Yankees lost again last night.
Starting point is 00:42:40 They're near the bottom of Major League Baseball and hitting, but the heat is on Aaron Boone. It's been an interesting series with the Angels in Anaheim because Shohei Otani, the best player in baseball ever, and I'm not sure it's even close. It's not. He can hit for power. He can run. He should be an all-star pitcher last night. Here he is.
Starting point is 00:42:59 Watch him again. Hit a triple. He leads the league in homers, and now triples. I mean, there's nothing like him. Maybe there's a little Mickey Mantle, but Mickey Mantle couldn't pitch. Here's Shohei last night. And hard past the first baseman Lemayhew and into the right field corner. Netto's off to the races.
Starting point is 00:43:19 He gets to third. He's being waived home. Otani is on his way to third. It's an RBI triple to the Major League leader in home runs and triples. The Angels have a 4-1 league. That baseball was crushed. The Yankees, meanwhile, had two hits. Two hits against a sub-500 pitcher.
Starting point is 00:43:40 They have, in their entire organization, one elite hitter, Aaron Judge, he's hurt. So of their available hitters now, the Yankees, the New York Yankees, have two guys hitting over 250. As a team, they hit 230. They have the lowest batting average in baseball since Aaron Judge injury. They're one in four since the All-Star break. Aaron Boone is getting blamed for everything. Blaming Aaron Boone for the Yankees' lack of hitting is like blaming your babysitter because your kids are brats.
Starting point is 00:44:11 They're not the problem. He or she is not the problem. Here's Aaron Boone after the game for his team that can't hit sub 500 pitchers. How much does? It's just judged. You're 12 over 500 weeks. off the I.O. and 8 under without them.
Starting point is 00:44:31 Well, that's what the story is. So we can correct it. We got the players to do it. We have players with track record to do it. I understand that's the story. And it's fair for this year. We're capable still. We got to find it.
Starting point is 00:44:47 I know Aaron. I love Aaron. I don't think he's the issue. Boise State's football coach. Boise State. In 12 games, we'll be paid. $1.4 million this year. That is more than the Major League Baseball average for managers who manage 162.
Starting point is 00:45:06 Analytics has completely devalued Major League managers worth. So if you're not going to empower them or pay them, then you can't blame them. Again, the big salaried employees at this company and every company I've worked at, they face the pressure. but contracts and salaries matter. Analytic departments, the executives now hand the managers the starting lineup. Pitching changes are made overwhelmingly on analytic data. So you're not empowering the manager. For the record, baseball people, seamheads, and I'm a casual, will tell you that a great
Starting point is 00:45:44 manager wins you four or five games a year. You really think Aaron Boone's the problem? The Yankees' front office is the problem. When's the last time they drafted? and developed a starting ace pitcher. They went and got John Carlos Stanton when they already had Aaron Judge. They had other needs. They have no hitters in the organization.
Starting point is 00:46:04 They're just parading up AAA hitters. It's not an Aaron Boone issue. But again, you've not empowered the manager. If you're not going to pay me, if you're not going to empower me, then don't blame me. Blame the people upstairs for the Yankees. Brian Cashman's a nice enough guy. This isn't close to Atlanta's roster. The Dodgers have better players.
Starting point is 00:46:25 The Braves have better players. Look around baseball. The Yankees right now, I think they're either in last place or tied, and they're hitting 230 or 231. That's what the A's hit, and they're a AAA team. That's what the Royals hit, where the 500 Mariners are around there. So if you're not going to empower the manager, stop blaming him.
Starting point is 00:46:47 Boise State's football coach, $1.4 million a year. Bonuses will get him to $2.5 million. Managers in baseball make about 900,000 to 1.2. That's what they make. I mean, they made more years ago. But, you know, unless you're a dusty baker, you're not getting paid. So don't blame them for stuff. All right, J. Mack.
Starting point is 00:47:11 Rowdy argumentative first hour. You know, the Debo Samuel disrespect is phenomenal. I'm stunned. This is deep for you. I mean, I don't know how you're going to rebound from this second hour. I think I'll I'll figure it out in the break. Another podcast from some
