Starting point is 00:00:00 This is an I-Heart podcast. Guaranteed Human. Another podcast from some SNL, late-night comedy guy, not quite. Unhumor me with Robert Smygel and friends. Me and hilarious guests from Bob Odenkirk to David Letterman help make you funnier. This week, my guest, SNL's Mikey Day and head writer, Streeter Seidel, help an a cappella band with their between songs banter.
Starting point is 00:00:23 Where does your group perform? We do some retirement homes. Those people are starving for banter. Listen to humor me with Robert Smigel and friends on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Imagine an Olympics where doping is not only legal, but encouraged. It's the enhanced games. Some call it grotesque.
Starting point is 00:00:42 Others say it's unleashing human potential. Either way, the podcast's Superhuman documented it all, embedded in the games and with the athletes for a full year. Within probably 10 days, I'd put on 10 pounds. I was having trouble stopping the muscle growth. Listen to Superhuman on the I-Hard Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Hey, this is Robert from the Stuff to Blow Your Mind podcast. Joe and I are both lifelong Star Wars fan, so we're celebrating May the 4th with a brand new week of fun, thought-provoking Star Wars-related episodes.
Starting point is 00:01:16 Join us as we tackle science and culture topics from a galaxy far, far away, such as the biology of tauntons and wampas on the ice planet hot, or the practicality and corporate business sense of the Sith rule. of two. Listen to stuff to blow your mind on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Thanks for listening to The Heard podcast. Be sure to catch us live every weekday from 12 to 3 Eastern, 9 to noon Pacific on Fox Sports Radio and FS1. Find your local station for the herd at Fox Sports Radio.com or stream us live every day on the IHeartRadio app by searching Heard. Now let's get this party started. You're listening to Fox Sports Radio. Oh, it is Tuesday.
Starting point is 00:02:00 a glorious, fun-filled Tuesday. In cold and about to be very wet Los Angeles, it's the hurt. Wherever you may be and however you may be listening, great to have you in today. One hour from now, Nick Wright stops by on the circus of NFL Free Agency and J-MAC, who, for the many of you who know Jason, he is a Jets fan. There is a lot of tension and anxiety on our set.
Starting point is 00:02:30 today you have pushed back on the idea that Aaron equals Super Bowls this morning. How do you feel with what's transpired? I love how you have Super Bowls, plural, as if he's won multiple Super Bowls in his career. This guy, this drama queen, just dragging everything out. Are you over this diva or what? Well, let's start with that. It is incredibly fitting that if Aaron Rogers goes to the Jets, this is your introduction to Aaron Rogers.
Starting point is 00:03:00 R-E-L-A-X, bruh, 24-7 drama, always on his terms. Welcome Jets to the world of Aaron. You think you're getting two years? You're getting one, maybe, and then next year he'll disappear in the off-season, play the game again. So at least it's appropriate. It's fitting. This is what Green Bay has been going through for half a decade or more.
Starting point is 00:03:30 Now, the good news is the Jets are working to sign Alan Lazzard, Green Bay receiver. What does that tell you? It tells you that Aaron has given the Jets boxes to check. Hey, hire Nathaniel Hackett, my buddy. Maybe it'll help. Get Alan Lazzard. You've got a bunch of young receivers. Get me somebody I know.
Starting point is 00:03:53 Maybe it'll help. Wouldn't mind David Boktiari and Randall Cobb, though those haven't been made public. So it feels like Aaron has given them boxes to check and he's waiting for them to get deals done. That has always been the worst part of Aaron. You can do everything he asks and you still have no idea where you stand with him. I mean, Green Bay has been in this relationship for 16 years. Do they like each other? I don't think so.
Starting point is 00:04:18 Is he coming back? Nobody's sure. And listen, we all understand. I don't care if it's messy. Rinaldo, Brady, Jordan, Kobe. All-time greats are demanding. But I always sort of feel with those great athletes, like if Brady wanted something and you delivered it, he had his demands maybe and mostly private, but you knew where you stood
Starting point is 00:04:40 with him. You never do with Aaron. He's passive aggressive. He hints at retirement. He doesn't have a big social circle. He's kind of private. So you can make all the changes and all the sacrifices and fill all the boxes and you still don't know where you stand with him.
Starting point is 00:04:55 Green Bay still doesn't know 16 years where they stand with him. And it's not like the Green Bay front office is a complicated bunch. Golf shirts, dockers, work hard, head down. Not overly complicated. They love football. And they still don't know what they get from Aaron. And Aaron gives off the vibe that I'm not sure if I like you. That is why this is so fitting.
Starting point is 00:05:16 Welcome to the world of Aaron Rogers. And the other thing is, and this needs to be said, and it's completely true. When LeBron made demands, he got you to the finals. Patner Brady made demands. they got you to a conference championship or Super Bowls. Aaron makes all these demands. He couldn't beat Detroit at Lambo. He couldn't beat an outplayed Garoppolo at Lambo.
Starting point is 00:05:40 He couldn't beat Old Brady at Lambo. So what do I get on the other end? It's not like I'm getting conference championships. I'm not getting Super Bowls or NBA final appearances. So the Jets now are desperate. Shocker. They're desperate often. The Cleveland Browns were desperate.
Starting point is 00:05:56 Shocker. They signed to Sean Watson. because they were desperate often. And what happens when you do that is the quarterback now controls you. DeShon Watson's contract will eventually control everything Cleveland does. And Aaron Rogers, not even a Jets employee yet, is making it very clear. This will be on my terms. Get me the players I want, the coordinator I want.
Starting point is 00:06:22 It doesn't guarantee you'll get me, but it'll give you a better shot at getting me. And this morning, as everybody in Jetsland is freaking out and anxiety-ridden, Aaron is saying, hey, brough, R-E-L-A-X. What an appropriate entrance to the New York Jets. The reality Packer fans, media teams, coaches, executives have been living for the last five to ten years. So I thought this story was interesting. I don't know really what to make of it. Albert Breer reports that Garapolo is a better culture fit with the Raiders than Derek Carr was.
Starting point is 00:07:07 Albert Breer says, for better or worse, they didn't see Derek Carr as a culture fit after having in the building for a year. They aren't guessing on whether Garopolo will be better in that regard. They know because Josh McDaniels used to coach him. So, you know, if you've listened to this show for years, I've always said, I like when the star matches the city. Bird in L.A. and Magic in Boston would never have been that cool. Magic was perfect as a Laker. Showtime. Bird, tough, feisty, was perfect as a Celtic. It's why it's the greatest NBA rivalry in a decade of all time, and there's nothing really close. they were perfect personalities for their city. One feisty and combative, one having a good time, all smiles and fun.
Starting point is 00:08:00 Garoppolo is perfect for Vegas. Maybe Derek Carr wasn't. I've said this about Brady and New England. Tom was committed, passionate, driven, willful, all business. Very Boston. Josh Allen and Buffalo played for a Wyoming cowboy. Now he's got a bison on the hill. small town guy perfect for buffalo Joe Burrow in Cincinnati Midwestern kid great work ethos unassuming not into fame
Starting point is 00:08:32 perfect for Cincinnati even Mahomes in Kansas City he's chill backyard barbecue fun guy loyal not into fame wants to have a good time Joe Montana in San Francisco big Ben in Pittsburgh it just felt right For the record, Green Bay and Aaron never has, the California hipster and the conservative Midwestern executives. It's why there's a constant battle year after year. But Garoppolo in Vegas, single, good-looking, fun, semi-committed, good time, Jimmy. Garapolo is the kind of guy that if he called you and said, hey, guys, want to go to Vegas for the weekend, nobody turns it down. I like Derek Carr, but he didn't have a let it rip quality. That's the thing about Garoppolo.
Starting point is 00:09:24 Kyle Shanahan asks him to make those tight window throws over the middle. He does. Sometimes they're picked. Mostly they're not. But he never lacks confidence. Garapolo never lacks confidence. Remember when Devante Adams star receiver for the Raiders last year complained that, hey man, just because I'm double team, let it go.
Starting point is 00:09:44 Let it rip. Let it go. take risks. Derek Carr's got a Kirk Cousins vibe. What did Stefan Diggs complain about Derek Carr? Let it rip. Throw it into coverage. Take a big swing occasionally. It's why I always thought Derek Carr in conservative Carolina was perfect. Frank Reich increases your efficiency, played in the NFL, like Derek, a really nice guy, head down, work hard. I thought it was perfect. You know, when Brady went to Tampa. Tampa. Jason wasn't working on the show at the time, but I said what worried me, because I lived
Starting point is 00:10:22 in the New England region, I said, literally Tampa is the furthest thing from New England. It's Ebor cities, cocktails at four, you know, Belichick is do your job. Ariens is go hang out with your fam. Neither is perfect. Neither is right, but it was a completely different cultural fit. And after the first year, Brady in that franchise, nothing but headaches. Ariens is now upstairs, God Bowls, who knows. Byron left which wore him out. The fit wasn't right. Brady made it work for a year, but even the year they won the Super Bowl.
Starting point is 00:10:55 They were seven and five and screaming at each other on TV in Chicago. It was never ideal. Mark Jackson in the Bay Area, Steve Kerr in the Bay Area. One really fits. Again, Magic and Bird. I like Derek Carr a lot. I thought New Orleans was a weird fit. It's a little like Vegas, right?
Starting point is 00:11:14 but what Josh McDaniels, according to the Albert Breer story, is saying, we know what Jimmy does. He'll lubricate the room socially. He's a guy's guy. He'll let it rip. He's loose. He's fun. You know what you get with Jimmy Garoppolo. It's not a knock on Kirk Cousins and Derek Carr.
Starting point is 00:11:34 I've been a Derek Carr fan from day one. But Garopolo is a totally different vibe in the room. And I think it works. I like the move. I really do. There's a couple stories today that make no sense to me at all. And I've got one of them around the corner, and Sean Payton already doing what Sean Payton does in Denver.
Starting point is 00:12:02 Be sure to catch live editions of the herd weekdays in noon Eastern, 9 a.m. Pacific on Fox Sports Radio, FS1, and the IHeard Radio app. Imagine an Olympics where doping is not only legal but encouraged. It's the enhanced games. Some call it grotesque. Others say it's unleashing human potential. Either way, the podcast's Superhuman documented it all,
Starting point is 00:12:25 embedded in the games and with the athletes for a full year. Within probably 10 days, I put on 10 pounds. I was having trouble stopping the muscle growth. Listen to Superhuman on the I-Hard Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. A win is a win. A win is a win. Yep, that's me, Clifford Taylor the 4th.
Starting point is 00:12:47 You might have seen the skits, the reactions, my journey from basketball to college football, or my career in sports media. Well, somewhere along the way, this platform became bigger than I ever imagined. And now I'm bringing all of that excitement to my brand new podcast, The Clifford Show. This is a place for raw, unfiltered conversations with some of your favorite athletes, creators, and voices that not only deserve to be heard, but celebrated. One week, I'll take you behind the scenes of the biggest moments in sports and entertainment, and the next we'll talk about life, mental health, purpose, and even music.
Starting point is 00:13:19 The Clifford Show isn't just a podcast, it's a space for honest conversations, stories that don't always get told, and for people who are chasing something bigger. So, if you've ever supported me or you're just chasing down a dream, this is right where you need to be. Listen to the Clifford show on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcast, or wherever you get your podcast. And for more behind the scenes, follow at Clifford and at TikTok Podcast Network on TikTok. Do you remember when Diana Ross double-tapped Little Kim's boobs at the VMAs? Or when Kanye said that George Bush didn't like black people. I know what you're thinking.
Starting point is 00:13:52 What the hell does George Bush got to do with Little Kim? Well, you can find out on the Look Back at it podcast. I'm Sam Jett. And I'm Alex English. Each episode, we pick a here, unpack what went down, and try to make sense of how we survived it. Including a recent episode with Mark Lamont Hill, waxing all about crack in the 80s. To be clear, 84 is big to me, not just because I'm. crack.
Starting point is 00:14:14 I'm down to talk about crack on day, but just so y'all know. I mean, at this point, Mark, this is the second episode where we've discussed crack. So I'm starting to see that there's a through line. We also have AIDS on the table right now. Thank you for finishing that sentence. Yes. I don't think there's a more important year for black people. Really?
Starting point is 00:14:33 Yeah. For me, it's one of the most important years for black people in American history. Listen to look back at it on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcast. While they're in spring training, time for spring savings. Consumer Cellular. Talk text data, 20 bucks a month. Go to consumer cellular.com slash the herd. Good to have the end. So this is odd. So the draft is in late April. Free agency now. That's why it's confusing for the Jets and difficult. They want Aaron to sign. We know what we have. We know what we don't. We can make free agent moves. teams want some clarity on what they have, what they don't have, and they want it now.
Starting point is 00:15:12 So the Jets on Pins and Needles, welcome to the new Aaron Rogers version that Green Bay has been dealing with for a long time. Carolina called Chicago, gave him three great picks and a star receiver to get the number one pick. So you think they got a quarterback they have in mind. Apparently not. The story today is they're down to two quarterbacks. C.J. Stroud and Anthony Richardson. Okay, that's weird. they're two different quarterbacks.
Starting point is 00:15:39 So C.J. Stroud may be limited, but he's polished and refined and accurate and efficient. He is a multiple-year starter. Anthony Richardson is the opposite. He is clay you hope you can mold. He's raw, inefficient, inaccurate, not a prototype, a million question marks. Frankly, Carolina, I don't think you really know what you want. that would be like my wife coming up to me and saying, listen, I've narrowed it down to two cars they want,
Starting point is 00:16:10 a Ferrari and a Jeep Wrangler, or me going to her and saying, listen, two vacations, let's either scale Mount Everest or go to a beach in Maui. Am I seeking a conquest or relaxation? If I went to my financial advisor, tax-free muni bonds or dump it all into Bitcoin, pick a lane. What do you want to do?
Starting point is 00:16:32 C.J. Stroud is ready to play very soon in the NFL. Multiple year, efficient, accurate starter, had a very good offensive coach, played with NFL receivers, an elite NFL offensive lineman, gets the pro game ready to play. How great he's going to be, I don't know. But he's ready to take NFL snaps. Multiple year starter in the Big Ten, full stadiums, big games, a lot of pressure. Anthony Richardson, you have no idea.
Starting point is 00:17:03 It's just clay you hope to mold into something, but it's raw, it's inefficient, it's inaccurate, he hasn't played much, hasn't played with nearly the wide receiving talent or offensive scheme as C.J. Stroud. So it feels like Carolina likes the number one spot, but doesn't really know what the number one player is. And it also feels like Frank Reich, who I like a lot as a coach, is dealing with an owner. And the owner has a a vision of what he thinks the franchise should be as well. So this to me is really
Starting point is 00:17:35 strange. To give up that much first round, two seconds, a star receiver, and down to two quarterbacks who are completely different. One is known as a reluctant runner, very accurate passer, the other one known as an inaccurate passer who would prefer
Starting point is 00:17:51 running and is great at it. Weird. Jay Mack with the news. No, no, no. Turn on the news. This is the Herd Line News. Wait, don't you love for we would give out some good tidbits? Didn't we talk about this yesterday, the Anthony Richardson thing? Gambling market said Strout.
Starting point is 00:18:08 We said, you don't move up for C.J. Strout. No disrespect to him. He's a good quarterback. You give up that haul for a potential unicorn in Anthony Richardson. Well, he's a remarkable athlete. He's got a lot of potential, right? That's a lot to give up first, two seconds, and a star receiver for. Potential.
Starting point is 00:18:27 I would agree. If you're talking the safest move, it's Bryce Young. That's the safest move. But you don't move up for safe, right? That's a good argument, too. I mean, if you're in the room with Frank Reich, I bet you he could make a convincing argument. All three.
Starting point is 00:18:42 That he can fix Anthony Richardson in no time flat. You know, we have egos, obviously. You have probably a bigger ego than I. Yeah, of course. But Frank Reich, Frank Reich, colossal ego. I mean, he played quarterback in the NFL, has worked with quarterbacks. Well, I think he also, I don't know if it's an ego.
Starting point is 00:18:57 he's an accomplished guy. I think Frank Reich, I'm just guessing here, would say to the owner, listen, Bryce Young doesn't need fixing. I'm a fixer. So give me the better athlete. I'm a fixer. Bryce Young is what he is. He does not need fixing.
Starting point is 00:19:14 Accurate, tremendous pocket awareness, beautiful touch. There's nothing to fix. There's just a limit. It's like Mac Jones. You knew what you got year one. There's no fixing it. And I think Frank Reich has shown time and time. again. Luck, Rivers, Wents. You go back to look at that Carson Wensier with Frank Reich.
Starting point is 00:19:33 In about a six-year window, it's his only great stretch. By the way, Kyle Shanahan, Big Ego, knows offense. Give me Trey Lance. I can fix this. This guy who played at North Dakota State. No problem. It doesn't always work. That's right. That's right. You can't fix everything. Let's start with the 49ers. They agreed to a one-year deal with your guy, former USC legend. That's right. He had a good Rose Bowl. He had a good Rose Bowl that one time. So Sam Darnold to the Niners. So Jimmy G's gone. Tray Lance is coming off a major injury.
Starting point is 00:20:03 Brock Purdy is coming off surgery. I don't know how to handicap this quarterback room because if you ask me right now, all I've heard is Kyle Shanahan's offense. It's tough to pick up. It's going to take a while. Donald has some Tray Lance, athletic, but not a superstar. Trey Lance is a big strong kid who can move. Darnold, big strong kid that can move.
Starting point is 00:20:23 Both have accuracy issues. And aesthetically, not a very pleasing. throwing. So both mechanically, Darnold and Trey Lance, never going to be great. Big, strong, likable kids who can move, but not Lamar Jacksoner, you know, not elite athletes, but really good athletes.
Starting point is 00:20:40 Strong, tough kids, dealt with some injuries, and probably not quite what people thought they would be. Darnold, to me, feels a lot like Trey Lance. Pertie feels like limited, super accurate, really coachable.
Starting point is 00:20:56 And so you guys, you Like, I just, when I looked at Darnold, I thought that's kind of Trey Lance. There's some stuff you like, but he's not great at delivering accurately the football, and that's what this system's about. So we're six months out, you know, a lot of football left to happen. Your best guess at the week one starter for the Niners. Brock Purdy, if he's healthy. Really? Yeah.
Starting point is 00:21:18 I would go Darnel. It's funny that neither of us thought the incumbent Trey Lance had any, has any chance next year to be the star. I just, you know, we'll see. It's year three for him, right? And they just brought in Darnel? You know, we talked a lot yesterday about Jared Stidham going to Denver to light of fire under Russell Wilson. Is just going to light a fire under Trey Lance? I don't know.
Starting point is 00:21:39 I don't know if he needs a fire. What does he need? Just to be more accurate. I was going to make a bad joke. Sorry, Trey Litts. All right. Next story. Eagles, boy, they are getting decimated defensively in free agency.
Starting point is 00:21:50 And now offensive tackle Andre Dillard is gone too. Joining Javon Hargrave, linebacker, T. Edwards and safety Marcus Epps. Philly did keep Jason Kelsey, that was a big one for you, and defensive end Brandon Graham, who's a little bit aging. But Colin, there's still a lot of guys left on this list who could be out the door soon. Yeah. You know, regression capital R for the Eagles next season?
Starting point is 00:22:13 Well, Fletcher Cox may retire, right? I mean, now. Calais Campbell's like 36 and he's sticking around. None of these guys want to go anywhere. They could be situational, right? Stick around. Maybe you get a ring. Well, I think everybody knew this.
Starting point is 00:22:27 This was understandable. Like, I think we kind of knew that New England's defense was going to have some losses. So this is not out of the blue. I don't think on day one we thought they would lose three defensive stars. This is just the beginning. Gardner Johnson's very popular, right? They'll want to keep him. I mean, listen, they brought on A.J. Brown.
Starting point is 00:22:47 He's expensive. Last year, they got to pay Jalen Hertz. They kind of went all in. Offensive league. We saw in the Super Bowl, this mighty defense couldn't get a stop at all. So does defense really matter? matter. We talked about that. Remember, what were the numbers on Mahomes in the second half? 13 and 14? Well, it's funny. I've thought about this.
Starting point is 00:23:06 Mahomes took the Niners and the Eagles defenses, considered great, and shredded both in the second half. Maybe it's just a Mahomes and Andy Reid or next level, and the Eagles defense is fine against 99% of the league, not name Mahomes and Andy Reed. Okay. I mean, because they also went to Santa Clara, the Chief Sid, and it was jaw dropping. Yeah. They went up and down the field on the Niners defense, which squished everybody not named Mahomes. So maybe it's just Mahomes is great, and the Eagles defense will just be fine against everybody else. They face Joe Burrow in the Super Bowl. I have a feeling Joe Burrough is probably going to end up torching them.
Starting point is 00:23:42 He lit up Buffalo. Justin Herbert's still around. So I don't know, Eagles. Final story, this is one of my favorites of the day. So last night, the Warriors beat the Suns. Nice dub for Steph Curry and company. Colin, there was a moment in the second quarter where Steph Curry, who by the way, he's playing defense now. You see it. Look, taking a charge here. Had a block against the buck
Starting point is 00:24:01 Saturday night. But in the second quarter, Steph Curry and Chris Paul got into it. Steph Curry abused him on the baseline and won, right? We don't have the video of the bucket yet. But afterwards, Steph Curry pointing to the crowd and yelling, this ain't 2014 no more. When Chris Paul would push him around with the paper clips and Blake Griffin and Lobb City. Afterward, Chris Paul said, I don't know what he's talking about. Like, Chris Paul, listen, man, when you get old, it's not as fun. Speak to someone who, knows as a basketball player. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:24:28 You can't get as many stops as you could before. Chris Paul getting lit up by the chef. Listen, the Phoenix Suns talk more than anybody in the league. Well, no, Memphis. You've seen the Maverick. It was Memphis and they imploded. But Phoenix started it last year. Remember, they started it talking about Luca.
Starting point is 00:24:44 So we've got now Dallas versus Phoenix and now Steph Curry talking to the Phoenix. Suns are making some enemies out there in the league. I'm going to get into the Warriors later because there's something going on with them that's just unsolved. Wiggins? It's just unsolvable, so it's bad news. So, but I would say this, it's all opening up for the Warriors. K.D. may not play. Westbrook makes the Clippers rotation now, more turnover prone. John Morant, according to a story this morning, is done for the season. You know, Denver, Sacher. Luca and Kyrie both out with injuries. So it's like, the sea is
Starting point is 00:25:20 opening for the Warriors, but they may not have Wiggins back for the year. It doesn't, nobody's reported what happened. It's a family issue. I got a little insight last time. I don't know if I want to hear about it. It just sounds sad. But I think it's opening for the Denver Nuggets or my Sacramento Kings. Coward, you, there are a few things better on this show than when in the preseason,
Starting point is 00:25:41 I can tell you something that's going to happen. New York Giants, Sacramento Kings, and it comes to fruition. Feels good. For you. And the audience. I'm giving out winners here to the audience. How many viewers you got on YouTube, podcast? Podcast, FS1.
Starting point is 00:25:56 Millions? Millions. Multiple millions. J. Mack with the news. Well, that's the news. And thanks for stopping by. The Heard Lye News. So I thought this was interesting.
Starting point is 00:26:09 We know, there are certain things in the NFL. We know to be true, but we hate to admit it. Half the teams that made the playoffs will not make the playoffs next year. Sorry, New York Giants. Nothing's guaranteed. So half the playoff teams out.
Starting point is 00:26:29 Here's another one. A third of your first round picks that you think are stars will be whiffs. Here's another one. Only about 33% of NFL free agency acquisitions make any impact. Many don't work. Many don't fit. So as I'm watching all these moves, a couple absolutely,
Starting point is 00:26:54 work. And they're both for the Denver Broncos. Sean Payton walked in and here's what I know. The Denver Broncos offensive line is better this morning than it was a week ago. Right tackle and they just brought in Ben Powers, one of the best pass blocking guards in the league from Baltimore. So when Nathaniel Hackett had this team, there was no clarity. There was no identity. We just, even the first game, remember the timeout situation? the clock management like should Russell call the timeout, should Hackett call the timeout, the whole season, why isn't Russell Wilson rolling out more? What is the offense? How come they don't throw to Jerry Judy? There was no clarity with anything they do. In all my years of doing this,
Starting point is 00:27:42 one of the reasons Fox succeeds is they have real clarity. They do conservative politics. They do big World Cup, NFL, World Series, big events, do them well. They have a brand. There's clarity on what they expect and what they do and the rival for this company ESPN's been all over the map for years and you've seen a loss and an erosion of ratings. What are you? What do you do well? What does Sean Payton do? Rebuild the offensive line. Why does it matter? When Sean Peyton was in New Orleans for 16 years, what is the statistic the Saints led the entire league in? Do you know what it is? Not points.
Starting point is 00:28:26 Not wins. Third down. Andy Reid, third down. Kyle Shanahan, third down. Mike McDaniel, Miami, third down. Sean Payton, third down. Teams that are good on third down, regardless of how you turn third into first.
Starting point is 00:28:47 Regardless of how you do it. Buffalo at the end of last year, didn't we complain? They have no run game. Josh Allen making it up as he goes. They lost an identity. What were they offensively beyond Josh Allen's really talented? That's not an identity.
Starting point is 00:29:04 That's grasping at straws. Chargers, second half offense all last year. What were they? Very good early. What are they in the second half beyond Justin Herbert's really talented? But with Drew Brees, smaller than the ideal size, weaker arm at the end of his career, they were the best team in the league on third down. Sean Payton builds offensive lines.
Starting point is 00:29:29 Everybody succeeds. That offensive line will give him an allotment of time to experiment. They can run. They can pass. So this is everything Sean Payton's about. Create an identity. They never had it with Hackett. Of all these free agent moves I've seen, two of them, Denver's online acquisitions,
Starting point is 00:29:47 absolutely will change the team. They like athletic guards who can pull. It's his offense. They'll be great on third down. By the way, Russell Wilson, I always thought was a pretty good third down quarterback until he got to Denver last year. And knowing what you are, knowing and providing that clarity to everybody in the locker room, Kansas City is a great example.
Starting point is 00:30:09 So they go to the Super Bowl with three cast off wide receivers and a rookie sky more. Go to the second half against Philadelphia. They were unbelievable on third, fourth red zone downs because they know what they are. It may look like razzle-dazzle experimentation to you. It's not. When they get in the red zone, Kansas City is the most complex, risk-interested, clever offense in the league. Ring around the Rosie.
Starting point is 00:30:36 They're hiking the ball to different players. That's not complicated to them because Kansas City knows what they are. You ever see a team that's kind of conservative and they try to run trick plays and it's just a tire fire? Kansas City does like seven a game. often in the red zone, in crisis, third down, fourth down. It's what they do. So this is the classic Sean Payton. Rebuild the O line.
Starting point is 00:31:00 Be great on third down. Move the chains. Defense off the field. You look at the great coaches in football. The play in football to me that's always defined more than just the play is third down. I said this 10 years ago. I always look at the end of the year as you get to week 12, 13, 14. Who are the good third down teams?
Starting point is 00:31:20 The good running teams don't all make the playoffs. The good passing teams don't all make the playoffs. The good defensive teams don't all make the playoffs. Generally, over the last 10, 15 years, if a team's highly functional on third down, it doesn't mean they have the best personnel, but it means they have an alignment. Everybody knows what they are. By the way, Philadelphia on fourth down, the rugby push. Everybody hated it except Philadelphia.
Starting point is 00:31:45 But it became part of who they were. grade O line, smaller quarterback, guys behind him, push for a first down so effective, were like it's illegal. This can't be legal. That is when you're well coached. Everybody in the league in New England, 20 years, fourth and one, Brady Sneak. You knew it was coming. You couldn't stop it.
Starting point is 00:32:07 So Sean Payton in New Orleans, the number one thing he did, first down efficiency on third, getting a first down. By the way, what was Denver last in the league at last year? third down Peyton 16 years first on third down that's a real thing
Starting point is 00:32:26 these moves for Denver are a real thing all right Aaron Rogers drama the Aaron Rogers watch is on I do think it's funny I do
Starting point is 00:32:40 because Jet fans they're absolutely sure this thing is going to happen which I think it will I said yesterday to somebody. I said, you know, sports fans hate to be wrong. So they're often experts after the results. You know, jet fans are sitting there.
Starting point is 00:33:00 And the minute Aaron signs, got our guy. If he stays in Green Bay, it'll be this. Who wants this diva? Green Bay fans, if he leaves, I'm over him. If he returns, he's the man. Give me your opinions on Aaron. Rogers now. I'm not interested after he signs or leaves. Fans are great. At Twitter is all post-result experts. Lay it out there. What is it now?
Starting point is 00:33:28 I'll give you mine coming up. Be sure to catch live editions of the herd weekdays in noon Eastern 9 a.m. Pacific. Hey, I'm Doug Gottlie. The podcast is called All Ball. Starting point is 00:34:16 Podcasts Superhuman documented it all, embedded in the games and with the athletes for a full year. Within probably 10 days, I'd put on 10 pounds. I was having trouble stopping the muscle growth. Listen to Superhuman on the I-Hard Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. A win is a win. A win is a win. Starting point is 00:35:37 Do you remember when Diana Ross double-tap little Kim's boobs at the VMAs? Or when Kanye said that George Bush didn't like black people. I know what you're thinking. What the hell does George Bush got to do a little kill? Well, you can find out on the Look Back at it podcast. I'm Sam J. And I'm Alex English. Each episode, we pick it here, unpack what went down, and try to make sense of how we survived it.
Starting point is 00:35:59 Including a recent episode with Mark Lamont Hill waxing all about crack in the 80s. To be clear, 84 is big to me, not just because of crack. I'm down to talk about crack on day, but just so you all know. I mean, at this point, Mark, this is the second episode where we've discussed crack. so I'm starting to see that there's a through line. We also have eight on the table right now. Thank you finishing that sentence. I don't think there's a more important year for black people.
Starting point is 00:36:26 Really? Yeah. For me, it's one of the most important years for black people in American history. Listen to look back at it on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Tomorrow, the 2023 World Baseball Classic continues as the USA takes on Colombia. tomorrow 10 p.m. Eastern 7 p.m. Pacific on FS1 and the Fox Sports app. So the Warriors, eight straight home wins, now embark on a road schedule, five or the next six games,
Starting point is 00:36:58 and I think it's five straight or five of six. They've been a terrible road team. 33 road game, seven wins, atrocious. A lot of it, we assume, is because the team is a little clicky this year. The Draymond Green Jordan Poole incident, there's a divide between young players who want more time and older players who were more established. That is my guest, my hunch. There's no reason in the world this is one of the worst teams in the NBA on the road. It's still a dynasty. They won last year.
Starting point is 00:37:24 They were good on the road last year, even in the finals at Boston. They're atrocious this year. Last night, Clay Thompson was unbelievable. 33 of his 38 in the first half. Jordan Poole was good. You know, he's got these every other night. He's torched it. Steph Curry was great.
Starting point is 00:37:39 They have ridiculous guard depth and ridiculous guard. scoring, but I was told last night that Andrew Wiggins probably will not return this year. It's not 100%, but they believe inside the organization. There's a likelihood, maybe 70, 30, he won't return. And he is a hugely critical piece. They can't win a championship without him. He's the best on-ball wing defender. He allows Draymond Green to do it.
Starting point is 00:38:07 He does well, which is Rome, intercept, clog up lanes, defend multiple pieces. you can put an Andrew Wiggins on a Luca or a LeBron or a Paul George or a Kauai or a Jason Tatum and at least make their night difficult. Without Andrew Wiggins, you ask more of Draymond Green and you ask more of your guards and as good as Steph Clay and Poole are, they have bad nights. So Rick Buecker talked about Andrew Wiggins. The feeling is negative, not positive on Andrew Wiggins' return. They certainly can't win without him.
Starting point is 00:38:40 I'm not even convinced that they can win with him. I just don't believe that they have enough. But certainly he and Gary Payton, if they were available, could cure a lot of their ills. And I don't know the details, but it is a personal issue, and they are not convinced by any stretch that he's going to make it back.
Starting point is 00:39:04 So if you look at this dynasty, look at the players they've brought in and the ones that work. KD worked. Why? Not because of his scoring. He was a willing defender. He always has been. Andrew Wiggins worked.
Starting point is 00:39:19 Not because of his scoring. He's a willing and excellent defender. Andre Iguodale years ago worked. A willing defender. Who didn't? DeAngelo Russell. Nice shot. Won't defend.
Starting point is 00:39:32 Not dependable on that end. So we pay so much attention to Steph and Clay and the Splash Brothers. and the scoring, and they are loaded. DeFincenzo now is a leader. Payton's coming back. They're going to make some moves in the offseason. But if you look at who didn't work, James Wiseman, probably didn't think the pace of play
Starting point is 00:39:52 he could defend. So without Andrew Wiggins, this is not a championship team. He is that jinga piece. Tatum, Kauai, Paul, Luca, LeBron, even at KD makes their scoring more difficult, their efficiency drop. And if he's not coming back, it's personal reasons, it's family. stuff. There's no reason for me to break the story. I don't have the sources anyway to do it. But to me, you're going to see, when you go on the road, they always say this in football,
Starting point is 00:40:19 defense travels. Shooting always doesn't. Offense doesn't travel. Defense is effort, effort always travels. It's why this dynasty has worked. They go on the road. They shut you down. They shut Tatum down. They shut the Celtics down late in key situations. Without Wiggins, not the same team. Okay, so, J. Mack said he had an Aaron Rogers take during the break, and when I needed it, he said, asked for it. So I don't know if I need it, Nick Wright Top of next hour, but what is your Aaron Rogers take? You don't know if you need it. I don't know when this hit me, but I got a text this morning on the way into work. I started letting it marinate a little bit. So do you remember when Tom Brady left New England? Yes.
Starting point is 00:40:56 Okay. So on a Tuesday, he announced, I'm leaving the Patriots. Sporting World, three days, four days. By Friday, he's a Tampa Bay. Buccaneer. Colin, what did he bring to Tampa? As soon as Leonard Fornett was released, hey, Leonard, come on down. As soon as Antonio Brown realized, I'm going to come back to the NFL. Tom Brady, who cultivated relationships with stars throughout the league. Antonio Brown, hey, come here. Gronk, you're retired? Hey, why don't you come back? Nobody says no to Tom Brady. All these guys like him. He's very well-liked. Relationships matter. What happened in the Super Bowl? Gronk scored. Fournette was a beast. Antonio Brown. Awesome. Good point.
Starting point is 00:41:34 So Aaron Rogers now is dragging his feet. All reports are he's trying to get guys to come with him to the Jets. Who's he leaning on? Randall Cobb. That's his guy. That's the relationship he has. Randall Cobb. Tom Brady brings stars to Tampa.
Starting point is 00:41:51 Aaron Rogers is trying to get Randall Cobb to New York. And now maybe he's like, oh, maybe we can get Alan Lazard. Those are the relationships Aaron Rogers had. You always say this. Relationships matter. I mean, the other guy's talking about is Mercedes. Louis, apparently. Mercedes Lewis and Randall Cobb. Those are who he's trying to bring to the Jets. According to the reports, I can't stress it enough. Like, he's just a different dude. He never won
Starting point is 00:42:16 over the locker room. He never really liked guys. Guys didn't get along with him. So when it comes, his big moment in the sun, Colin, his free agency, well, not free agency, but he's leaving the Packers. Who wants me? The Jets. That's the market for him right now. What other guys are going to come with him. Randall Cobb, Mercedes-Luitts, maybe Alan Lazard. Well, he, it's, yeah, I mean, Aaron is different. Brady would have these Kentucky derby parties.
Starting point is 00:42:44 Yeah, Brady's just a different guy. Big family guy, you know, married family guy, close to his parents. He's also a good hang. He's a cool dude. Like, I don't want to sound lame, but he's a cool guy. People like Brady, they gravitate toward him. He's got a winning smile.
Starting point is 00:42:58 By the way, Peyton Manning was the same in Indianapolis in Denver. guys like hanging out with Peyton. Payton's fun. Peyton's picking up the bill. Peyton's a good time. Absolutely. You hear anyone else in the league oil? Devante Adams, is he clamoring to get to New York to play for the Jets?
Starting point is 00:43:12 I know they're boys. He's kind of locked into a contract, but... Well, it does matter. It's the knock on Russell Wilson. Who does he hang with? That's a good point. I mean, all the Seahawk guys all took shots. The Denver thing didn't work.
Starting point is 00:43:23 It matters. Like, this stuff matters. So who are your guys? Who do you roll with? Brady, Peyton Manning, a lot of them. By the way, it was a knock on Big Ben in Pittsburgh. Offseason didn't hang out with anybody. Hung out with his family.
Starting point is 00:43:38 Who did he roll with? He never rolled with the guys in Pittsburgh. Like the receivers, the backs. I mean, it was like Brady always had Edelman, his backs, his tight ends, his offensive linemen. Like Brady had his guys. That's why, by the way, that's Garapolo. Garopolo is at Warrior games with Niners, Giants games. Like Garopolo's known as a good hang.
Starting point is 00:44:00 He's got his boys. he rolls with his guys, he picks up the check for the private jet. They go to the big events, the boxing matches. That's part of it. Patrick Mahomes last year, they lose Tyreek Hill. How many receivers want to go play with Patrick Mahom? Now we know he's great, but he seems like a cool dude. You know, you've got to have that, be able to cultivate relationships.
Starting point is 00:44:17 You like to say be a good hang. Colin, when FS1 recruited you back in 2015. That's right. How many people did you call to say, we got to get you here? I still remember the phone call, ladies and gentlemen, when Cowherd calls me up. He says, well, I can't say what you said. You were very excited about building a group of cool people who you get along with. I'm also married.
Starting point is 00:44:37 I've got kids. So that's my real, that's my life experience. I'm part of stuff. Aaron, again, I've said this about KD. He tends to be a wander. Katie's not married. No kid. It's okay.
Starting point is 00:44:48 But Katie doesn't, who does he roll with? Crazy kooky kiree? Who does Aaron roll with? So it's a reality. This is something I've talked about. Everybody listening has this. that you know, you meet people and you have your high school. I don't have a lot of high school friends. I have one I still communicate with, but I, you know, I was a small town. But I've got two
Starting point is 00:45:10 in college I still connect with. And every city I've gone to, I've got a series of people I still connect with. That I think is very normal. I think most, I'm speaking for men, most guys have that. Aaron's a little different. So he doesn't get along with the front office. I think he and his brother have reconciled, not sure if it's the parents, doesn't have a ton of teammates. Now, Boktiari likes him. Randall Cobb likes him. So let's be fair. He does have a couple of guys. Mercedes-Lewis. He's got some guys.
Starting point is 00:45:34 How much time in Green Bay? Over a decade, and you just named two dudes, maybe three. I'm trying to be fair with Aaron Rogers, because I think he views guys like me as unfair. I've said this before. First ballot Hall of Famer. Little finicky and high-maintenance for my taste. I'd rip the Band-Aid off if I was Green Bay,
Starting point is 00:45:55 but I'd still put him into the Hall of Fame. I think he's one of the 12 best, most talented quarterbacks I've ever seen. I always liked him more than Favv, despite Farrv's recent incidents. I thought Aaron was more of a thinking person's quarterback, less of a gunslinger, higher efficiency. I thought he was a modern quarterback, smart, thoughtful, accurate, no gun slinging. Like sometimes the knock was he was too safe instead of just letting it rip. So I do, there's a lot I like about Aaron.
Starting point is 00:46:22 And I also know the word normal is kind of a dangerous word. What is normal? I've always compared Aaron to Kevin Durant. They're a little thin-skinned. Some of that is because they probably spend a lot of time thinking about themselves because they're not married, animals, kids, all that. I don't have time to be on the phone. I see people complaining about Twitter.
Starting point is 00:46:43 I'm on it an hour a day reading. I don't have time to be on it. People sit and complaining about Elon Musk. Who knows that much about Twitter? It's just a goofy app. But again, so I try to be fair with Aaron. He is too high maintenance and non-committal for my personality. but he does make the Jets absolutely unequivocally, inarguably,
Starting point is 00:47:05 better if he signs. That is indisputable. Hour two, Nick Wright, is next. Another podcast from some SNL late-night comedy guy, not quite. Unhumor me with Robert Smygel and friends. Me and hilarious guests from Bob Odenkirk to David Letterman help make you funnier.
Starting point is 00:47:22 This week, my guest, SNL's Mikey Day and head writer Streeter Seidel, help an a cappella band with their between songs banter. Where does your group perform? We do some retirement homes. Those people are starving for banter. Listen to humor me with Robert Smigel and Friends on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Starting point is 00:47:47 Some call it grotesque. Others say it's unleashing human potential. Either way, the podcast's superhuman documented it all, embedded in the games and with the athletes for a full year. Within probably 10 days, I'd put on 10 pounds.
