This is an I-Heart podcast.
Guaranteed Human.
Another podcast from some SNL, late-night comedy guy, not quite.
Unhumor me with Robert Smygel and friends.
Me and hilarious guests from Bob Odenkirk to David Letterman
help make you funnier.
This week, my guest, SNL's Mikey Day and head writer, Streeter Seidel,
help an a cappella band with their between songs banter.
Where does your group perform?
We do some retirement homes.
Those people are starving for banter.
Listen to humor me with Robert Smigel
and friends on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.
Imagine an Olympics where doping is not only legal, but encouraged. It's the enhanced games.
Some call it grotesque. Others say it's unleashing human potential. Either way, the podcast's
superhuman documented it all, embedded in the games and with the athletes for a full year.
Within probably 10 days, I'd put on 10 pounds. I was having trouble stopping the muscle growth.
Listen to Superhuman on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.
On the Look Back at it podcast.
For 1979, that was a big moment for me.
84 was big to me.
I'm Sam J.
And I'm Alex English.
Each episode, we pick a year, unpack what went down, and try to make sense of how we survived it.
With our friends, fellow comedians, and favorite authors.
Like Mark Lamont Hill on the 80s.
84 was a wild year.
It was a wild year.
I don't think there's a more important year for black people.
Listen to look back at it on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.
A win is a win.

It's the Hurt in Los Angeles.

Thanks for making us part of your day.
Sonny Vicaro in one hour.
There's a new movie out about Michael Jordan, Nike, and his rise to fame.
Sunny Baccaro, that's his story.
The air movie.
Saw it last week.
It's fantastic.
he will join us in studio today.
So jacked up for this.
He hasn't seen Sunny in forever.
But he helped reform college athletics, getting kids paid.
The story is fascinating.
His journey to meet Michael Jordan and lure him away from an Adidas converse deal,
which was appeared to be imminent.
He got him to Nike.
Air Movie is his story.
We'll bring him on the couch here or in the chairs here in about an hour.
And J. Mack, I'm jacked.
I haven't seen Sunny Vacero in a long time.
The movie's really, it's a fantastic movie about a great American story, and Sunny Vicaro needed
his story told.
We've heard the Nike story.
We've seen the Phil Knight story, the swoosh story.
It's time for Sonny Vicaro story and Michael Jordan's mom's story, and they're both great.
Very excited for it.
Interviewed him a few times.
Super fascinating character.
He's got stories galore.
Oh, he's got a lot of them.
So let's start with this.
Generally speaking, I do not do a lot of award topics.
I always feel like when you see that college football writer in week three doing a Heisman column, not very original, run out of ideas.
But the MVP of the NBA this year is interesting for two reasons.
Number one, Yokic for the Nuggets has a chance to win it third year in a row.
That doesn't happen very often, only to the all-time greats.
He's not real verbal.
He doesn't talk a lot.
He's not real flashy.
And the second reason it's interesting is the guy he's vying with MBEED is fun, is verbal, is flashy, isn't a big market.
is a huge personality.
And a lot of people think it's his turn.
And the NBA has a history of voting MVP who they think the better story is.
Russell Westbrook got an MVP.
We know he's not the most valuable player in the league, but it was a good story.
Durant left him.
He got him to the playoffs.
So, but last night they were supposed to play.
But Embededed-up, sore calf says, I'm out.
Or maybe the Sixers said, he's out.
Or maybe Doc said.
Joel's out. Whatever it is, to me, the MVP officially goes to Yokech now in Denver.
But, but, but when Jalen Hertz and Mahalms were tied down the stretch, big most valuable player
race, Jalen Hertz got dinged up, missed a couple of games. You say, well, it's not his fault.
Nobody said it is, but it is his reality. M. B'd has played 61 games. Yokic has played 67.
Their numbers are both great.
They're powerful, big, unique players.
But last night was one of the handful of regular season games that mattered,
and this is a regular season award.
That's what it is.
I'll give you a little flash.
I'll give you a little personality.
You can use that in your voting,
but you've got to be able to show up in a big regular season game.
After the game where MB no showed,
And Yokic did what Yokic always does.
Shows up and dominates, and he did.
And Denver won, and they remained a number one seed in the West.
Which I don't think it's the be-all end-all for it.
You don't have to be the number one seed.
But you've got to show up for this game.
You got to be available.
Yokch went to Philly last time they played.
It's time for M.B. to play.
M. Bid, apparently, Doc Rivers came out, and he sort of proves our point on this.
Doc Rivers came out and said it was an easy decision for us.
everybody wants to see these two guys play against each other,
but we're going to be slow and smart.
We want to get him and the whole team healthy for the playoffs.
So last night, the Sixers chose the playoffs over a really interesting regular season game.
And it's a regular season award.
Sorry, nobody said it's M.B.'s's fault.
It's M.B.'s reality.
He doesn't play.
play a lot of games.
Yokic plays more.
Last night, another triple double.
Another win.
Denver won.
We all know that regular season NBA games are not equal.
I've said this before.
There's 10 to 12 regular season games.
There was a Celtic Laker game in Boston earlier this year.
They got a big number.
You'll see the occasional Celtics playing the Warriors rematch of the finals.
Or you'll see a Milwaukee playing the Celtics, the two big powers.
in the East, about 10 of those a year in the regular season. And they matter, and they matter more,
and they matter to the league, to its branding, to its television partners, and to its consumers.
And so it's a regular season award. The Sixers in a very tight race chose a playoff agenda.
They may end up being the smarter team. But the MVP is not about smarter anything. It's about
being available in the regular season and dominating.
Yokic last night to me won the award.
So, you know, everybody has their own version of the truth, right?
Conservatives, liberals, everybody's got sort of their own beliefs.
Beliefs become agendas, agendas become seeking things that align with how you want
the world to be.
We all get it.
We all have our own versions of the truth.
Aaron Rogers, though, as he's gotten richer, he's gotten a little fuzzier with the truth.
He said he was surprised when he came out of the darkness retreat that the Packers, you know, moved off him.
Well, we find out now from Brian Gudenkoons, who does not have a history of fibbing about his vaccine or manipulating the media or demanding transparency but not being transparent.
he doesn't have that history.
You look at Aaron's resume and Brian Gugin Kuhn's resume.
Aaron's gotten real fuzzy with the truth.
You have a right to do that.
But I have a right to call you out when it appears once again,
Aaron's surprise was no real surprise at all
because the Packers couldn't get a hold of him
and they tried multiple times in the off-season.
I was really looking forward to the conversations with Aaron
to see how he fit into that.
Those never transpired.
So there came a time.
where we kind of had to make some, you know, decisions.
So we went through his representatives to try to kind of talk to him where we were going
with our team.
And at that point, you know, they informed us they would like to be traded to the jets.
And our inability to reach him or for him to respond in any way, I think at that point,
then we just kind of had to, we had to do my job and kind of reach out and understanding
that a trade could be possible and see he was interested.
Okay, so it was a little fuzzy about his vaccination status.
You don't care about that based on which way you live.
land on vaccines, right? The people anti-vaccines cheer him and the people like me who think you should
help other people beyond yourself and get a vaccine, don't need necessarily 10 booster shots. I think he was
fuzzy. There's also the I didn't do that list for the Packers. Yeah, they signed Alan Lazzard.
There's a reason. You wanted Alan Lazzard to the Jets. There's also the all I want is transparency
quote a couple of weeks ago, despite the fact I have had a Green Bay Packer, a current player in the last
two weeks, say, Aaron is never transparent, weekly, monthly, in season, out of season. He's never
transparent. He leaves everybody guessing. But again, everybody has versions of the truth. Aaron's gotten a
little fuzzy with his over time. It's not the end of the world. But what is is this delusion,
which I keep pointing to. He ghosts people who don't agree with him. He is surrounded by yes,
man, and people who agree with him. He's not married, no kids, his friends,
It's a small circle.
And if you're going to push back on Aaron, you're not going to be hanging with Aaron.
So he wants us to believe now that he's supposed to be surprised that an organization that tried
multiple times, an employer to contact him, big decisions coming up and couldn't.
Couldn't get him directly.
Couldn't get him through his representatives.
He wants us to believe he's surprised.
That again is fuzzy.
That is delusion.
If you had friends who called you out, didn't surround yourself with those that just agree with you,
somebody would have said, dude, it's been eight weeks. You may want to get a hold of your employer.
I saw another quote this morning. This comes from Zach Gelb, a reporter.
He was told that Aaron and his coach Matt LaFleur had game plan meetings to give Rogers more say.
Remember Aaron wants more say. Sometimes Aaron would show up.
Other times he would leave Matt LaFleur sitting there.
and never gave a reason why.
Once again, Aaron's on his own timeline.
Aaron has his own version of the truth.
Aaron is surprised when he absolutely shouldn't be
because none of us would be if we left our employer hanging for eight weeks.
I don't want to hear about this.
Oh, it just came out of left field.
Now I guess I'm a jet.
Again, I understand it.
We all see the world through our lens.
We're all a little more important to ourselves than we are to other people.
you have a right to be upset that your Green Bay career is over, right?
But own some of it.
They're called mirrors.
Every bathroom has one, stared at occasionally, and I don't want to hear you're surprised.
That is absolute bull and nonsense.
You know it and I know it.
You made yourself unavailable.
And if you do, even as a highly compensated, very talented employee,
employers will eventually move off you.
All right.
A lot of stuff today.
Bill Belichick, grumpy but had a good soundbite.
Sonny Vicaro, top of next hour.
Brock Purdy appears to be the starter for the San Francisco 49ers.
I didn't think that was a controversial take.
Everybody's all worked up over that.
He went 7 and 0 in games he started and his elbow didn't snap in half.
He was 7 and 0 in games where his elbow didn't break.
Yeah, you're going to start him.
He's going to get the first start.
I thought it was obvious, not controversial.

Do you remember when Diana Ross
double-tap Little Kim's boobs at the VMAs?
Or when Kanye said that George Bush didn't like black people.
I know what you're thinking.
What the hell does George Bush got to do with Little Kim?
Well, you can find out on the Look Back at it podcast.
I'm Sam J.
And I'm Alex English.
Each episode, we pick it here, unpack what went down,
and try to make sense of how we survived it.
Including a recent episode with Mark Lamont Hill,
waxing all about crack in the 80s.
To be clear, 84's big to me, not just because of crack.
I'm down to talk about crack on day, but just so y'all know.
I mean, at this point, Mark, this is the second episode where we've discussed crack.
So I'm starting to see that there's a through line.
We also have AIDS on the table right now.
Thank you for finishing that.
sentence.
Yes.
I don't think there's a more important
year for black people. Really?
Yeah. For me, it's one of the most important years
for black people in American history.

And in recognition of Mental Health Awareness Month,
I'm bringing over a decade of my own experience

I'm talking.
Tripp Fontaine, Ryan Clark.
Sometimes when we're in the pursuit of the thing,
we get so wrapped up in the chase
that we don't realize that we are in possession of the thing
and we're still chasing it
and we don't know when we've done enough
because people scoreboard watch.
Life becomes about wins and losses.
Steve Burns, Dustin Ross,
because you find it important to be a good person
while you hear on earth?
Are you a good person because you're afraid?
Because that's two different intentions, bro.
Absolutely. And that's two different levels of trust.
I want you to just really be a good person.

It's not a hot take. It sounds obvious, but, you know, in this day and age, if you come out and you're brutally honest, you'll get pushback.
John Lynch, good player, covered him when he played for the box.
when he worked for Fox.
Then a great job, GM of the San Francisco 49ers.
It's absolutely the best roster in the NFL.
It's absolutely stacked.
It should be noted, how do you keep it stacked?
Don't pay your quarterback anything.
That's why the Lamar Jackson Niners rumors don't make sense.
It's why Brady could be difficult.
Aaron Rogers is off the board.
So, Brock Purdy had a great year last year.
Last player taken in the draft.
He'll be the cheapest starter in the league.
He went 7 and 0 in games he didn't break his elbow.
14 touchdowns, two picks, a pass rating in a hundreds.
And John Lynch said if it started tomorrow, he would start.
I think Brock has earned the right with the way he played,
that he's probably the leader in the clubhouse at that.
I'll let Kyle make those kind of decisions.
But I know when we talk, I think Brock's probably earned that right to be the guy.
If we were to line up, he'd probably take that first snap.
That's not controversial.
Well, Trey Lance has had four starts.
He completes 55% of his throws.
But he deserves a, they've got 75 practices with Trey Lance, multiple workouts with Trey Lance,
preseason games with Trey Lance, four games starting with Trey Lance.
He has struggled with accuracy.
This offense is all about a quarterback accurately placing the ball where Kyle Shanahan has
schemed it.
Shanahan did not want to take Lance.
He was Mack Jones overruled by Lynch in the scouting department.
So now Shanahan's saying, well, what do you want me to do?
It's not close.
One guy is significantly more accurate.
This is exactly as a fan what you should want, right, to not be paralyzed by a pre-draft evaluation.
And instead, getting it right, not paralyzed by being right.
Well, we gave away these picks.
We had this.
We decided to get it right.
it's not close. The strength of purdy is accuracy. This coach demands accuracy.
Trey Lance is bigger, little stronger, moves, nice kid. His weakness is accuracy.
This is what you want as a fan. You want your team to play the best players that can give you
the best chance to win. You cannot double down on being wrong with a draft pick.
And it's not like 75 practices, preseason games, four games.
This is what Shanahan does.
I told you last year, I had somebody within the organization saying they became really concerned, really concerned about July and August, about how it looked.
The arm fatigue, Trey was struggling.
They were considering hiring a quarterback coach to look at tape outside the organization.
Well, how long's a chant?
It's a Super Bowl roster.
You're going to screw around and give him eight games?
then you're two and six.
I'm not rooting for anything.
I'm rooting for the guy who gets the job to win.
There's a reason they kept most of this roster intact.
They don't pay the quarterback anything.
The cheapest starter will be Brock Purdy.
Now, if Brock Purdy's injury precludes him from playing in September and October,
Trey Lance wins the job and chops it up and complete 64% of his throws,
it will be very difficult to pull Trey Lance out of a starting job.
I said this about Garoppolo for years.
Garapolo was liked in the locker room.
He was winning games.
He was a guy's guy.
It's hard to pull that back, right?
Like you start disrupting chemistry.
Garapolo had his guys.
Maybe Tray Lance develops that.
If Brock Purdy's elbow surgery doesn't heal fast enough,
Tray Lance gets off to a five-and-one start.
The guys like him.
He adds some mobility that Purdy couldn't.
He's more accurate this year than maybe it's his job.
But today, based on what we've seen,
it would be not a hot take to subscribe to the theory that Brock Purdy clearly to this point
gives you a much better chance to win based on his strength and the coaches system.
Jay Macklin News.
No, no, no, no, turn on the news.
This is the herd line news.
I'm loving these owners meeting comments from the coaches, Colin.
The stuff from coaches and GMs as well has been fascinating.
Well, Sean Payton said something yesterday.
People were a little surprised by.
So the Broncos brought in Jared Stidham.
Yeah.
It would be the backup to Russell Wilson.
But, of course, Peyton praised Stidham yesterday for how he played late in the season
and said the Broncos see the potential for him to start in the NFL.
Yeah.
There were a handful of number twos that either I'd work with or we felt comfortable with.
But in this case, I think it's a number two.
two that his arrow is moving into a direction where, you know, we feel like he can become an
NFL starter in our league.
I think he's someone that's going to be great in the room.
He's smart.
And so quietly, that was an important sign for us.
Are you hedging your bet?
Are you hedging it and saying, listen, we got to make this Russell Wilson thing work.
But in about two years, we may have to make a tough decision.
We want to have a guy ready to go.
It gives you, if Russell push back on meeting rooms, schedule, offensive changes, not saying he would,
is it a, you don't think it's a hedge of a bet a little bit.
I thought that.
And then I looked at Russ's contract.
And they are really locked into him with the dead cat money for three more seasons.
So I'm like, well, why else would he say this?
And I think, and we touched on this yesterday, motivational tactics.
Like, you can't get in Russell Wilson's face and scream, come on, you got it.
What can you do?
You can go around and say,
Jared Stidham, man, he's a starter in this league.
He's really good.
I love what I saw from that guy.
Yeah.
Russ is good.
What?
The backup?
And I think maybe this lights a fire under Russ,
but Russ has never been like you need to light a fire under him.
He's self-motivated.
He is self-motivated.
Like a career underdog.
Yeah.
Is he distracted?
He's got a big life now.
He does.
I don't know.
I think it's one of the more interesting teams in the league.
Sean Payton wins everywhere.
I want to see it play out, but it is a unique move.
We thought it was weird.
They were already paying Russell Wilson a fortune.
Stidham was reasonably compensated for a backup,
and both of our takeaway was, that's interesting.
And I think it remains interesting.
I don't know why, but it's okay, I think, for us to speculate why.
It is, you don't generally, when you're paying your quarterback the most in the league
or close to it, bring on a backup, you'd want to Brock Purdy that you pay nothing to.
And you don't have to talk about to reporters, right?
Yeah.
The other thing, and we've touched on this before, but like, you know, Russell Wilson's getting
up there in age.
He's maybe thinking about his post career the way Brady has been hyping his own TB12.
And I had sat with a streaming executive who's a big fan of this show about six months ago.
And he told me that Ross and his wife went in and were pitching a reality show in Denver.
And they ultimately passed on it.
And they were like, I don't know if his wife is a big enough star for it to be a show.
But the idea that Russ is thinking about that instead of football, that's a little new for him.
That would be by reality TV show standards, way better than the stuff I've watched for years.
I would watch Sierra and Russell way more than I would watch.
You're watching reality TV?
No, but the times I've turned on, they weren't as big as stars as those guys.
Those guys are at least stars.
Good looking people, stars, talented.
reality TV gives us train wrecks.
They're actually talented.
They're talent. Right. They're not train wreckish.
I'm surprised you watch any reality.
Give me one show. Give the audience one reality show.
Again, years ago when I watched more broadcast TV, I don't now.
I watched streaming or sports on cable. That's what I watch.
That's good.
But I would say years ago when I used to watch it, it was always people that didn't have a great deal of talent who were just a mess.
The cell was the mess. You know, Jose Canseco is on a show.
worse up. You're like, like, Russell Wilson's a star, Ciar is talented. They're great looking,
decent people, ascending in their careers. Like, that's an actually an interesting show by
reality standards, to me. Next up, Jets and the Packers. There's going to be a couple Jets Packers
items today. I know people don't need to freak out. But I think this is interesting. So
yesterday, Jets GM, Joe Douglas at the owner's meeting, was asked about, hey, you guys don't
have a deal with Rogers. What about Lamar Jackson? And you know, I've been putting
for that for weeks here. Yes. Here is Joe Douglas on Lamar Jackson. First of all,
Lamar Jackson is a fantastic player. But, you know, where we stand is, you know, it would be
disingenuous in and operating, negotiating bad faith if we went down that path. So right now we
have our plan, we have our process, and we're sticking to that. I'll let you tackle that one
first. No, I mean, it's only 9.30 in the morning out here. I don't want to pop off too much.
Go ahead.
I believe Aaron Rogers and the Jets will get done.
I agree.
And so there's no reason to start a forest fire.
Let's just get that done.
Bad faith, Colin.
Tell me what is bad faith about it if the Jets were to make a move, whatever it is, on Lamar Jackson?
Because bad faith would be you're currently in discussions regularly, probably every couple of days.
Aaron and the Jets are talking, Robert Sala, Hackett.
So Aaron's moving to the Jets, wants to play for the Jets, they want him.
Why disrupt that?
Let's not be fuzzy here.
Let's just keep this going in the momentum.
We're going to solve this thing in the next couple of weeks, is my guess.
Because the draft is like the third week of April.
We're moving into April.
Bad faith, I think, is a good term.
You're in a relationship right now with Aaron that you're trying to seal.
You're not quite there yet.
Why take an exit off the Aaron interstate?
you don't have to take an exit off the interstate.
You can just maybe pull the car over the side of the road,
take a moment to look at the map or on your phone or whatever.
But the Packers and the Jets are at a bit of an impasse,
and we'll get to more of it later,
but there's nothing bad faith.
Listen, you've been in a lot of negotiations with companies,
whether it's advertising, whatever.
And if you hit a roadblock, well, you know, one way around the roadblock,
let me just call up one of their rivals and see what else is out there.
That's not bad faith.
I just want to see what else is out there in the market.
I like you. I like our relationship.
We got something. I think it's going to happen.
I just want to see what else is out there.
I wouldn't like that.
If we're negotiating...
But there's a roadblock in your negotiation.
Well, it's not necessarily on me.
The team I...
My employer, formerly, the Packers, are blocking it.
I'm not. I'm in a...
I'm in a relationship with a team that we're trying to conclude and finalize.
And now you're going to go off.
So now I got the Packers moved on.
off. If I'm Aaron Rogers, I would consider like, okay, I'm out. I'm retiring. And then the Jets are
really screwed. Why can't the Jets go to me? Aaron? We love you. We want to work with you. Your team's
screwing us up here. We love you. We're going to come back to you. We are going to go talk to Lamar Jackson.
Don't take it personally. Yeah, don't take it personally, Aaron. Aaron takes everything personally.
In an ideal situation, he wouldn't take it personally. Celebrities and stars take everything
personally because they're very rarely not given what they want.
So when occasionally a star doesn't get what they...
Oh, star doesn't get what they want.
That's the guy I want to get in bed with.
Guy who takes everything personally in his shimony Christmas.
All right, let's go to the final story.
This one, Cowherd, is interesting.
So Bradley Beale, Washington Wizards, we like him, right?
Good player.
He is under police investigation following an incident with fans last week in Orlando.
This is a wild story.
So the Wizards were headed to the locker room after the game.
When a fan yelled at Bradley Beal that he was the reason the fan lost a large bet.
That fan's a loser.
You're damn right.
Beal then turned to the guy, said some comments.
It's on TMZ Sports.
I don't care about your bets or your parlay's dude.
And he knocks the hat off the guy's head.
Doesn't hit him in the face, just knocks the hat off his head.
So they exchanged some trash talk and then finally Beal's ushered to the locker room.
So this meatball gambler who lost a bet is now claiming,
that Bradley Beale should be investigated for battery,
and the police are looking into it.
How embarrassing is that fan?
Let's find out who the fan is.
Let's name this clown.
Let's put him out there.
Let's see this guy who's yelling at a player.
You cost me money at an arena.
Listen, how much, and even if that fan was watching this,
he still wouldn't get it.
Like some people, you can't argue with some people.
They just do not get it.
So this guy is a meatball, whoever this fan is.
He has no self-aware.
earnest, hey, learn to control your gambling.
Yeah.
Don't gamble what you don't have.
Don't gamble your cable bill, your apartment rent.
I'm going to put some of this on the teams.
Okay, when the superstar players or any player on the teams walk in the locker room, they need security.
You got a bunch of fans out there who are saying stuff.
We've seen them throw stuff at players.
The players need protection in the arena.
And for this guy to be yelling at Bradley Beale and nobody around Bradley being like,
dude, let's get out of here.
That's a bad job by the teams.
Bad job by this gambler.
We talked about this yesterday.
as sports gambling has increased in America.
I said, every time anybody lose loses a bet.
It's always the refs.
It's like, no, this is the way sports is.
Most games are very close.
That's the way it works in the NCAA tournament.
The games are close.
Nobody's going, you know, I want to screw Larry over on his bet.
Believe it or not, you're not that important.
And there's just as many bets on the other side.
So nobody's out.
Rigged guy always cracks me up, as if there's not,
half the bets on the other side.
The other thing, you know, there's hundreds of thousands of people gambling on the NBA nightling.
This is just one loser yelling at a player.
Let's not overreact and paint all gamblers.
I am going to always side with a player, though.
100%.
I'll never side with a heckler.
I'll never side with a fan.
It is a privilege to go to a sporting event.
If you get hit with a foul ball in the face, take a glove.
Sit behind the net.
Pay attention.
Look up from your phone.
Yeah.
So I'm always 100%
I couldn't tell you the last time.
Even if you go to the malice and the palace,
if you go back and look at that story,
people were throwing things that were on our test at the time.
I defended our test for a lot.
There's a guy who literally chucked a beer on him.
What do you expect the guy to do?
And then when you looked at the life resumes
of the fans that were involved,
yeah, criminal records.
Oh, you mean they weren't 4.0 GPA students?
Yeah, no valedictorian.
No valedictorians.
No valedictorians throwing beer at fans.
Okay, that's sports.
That's funny how it works.
So I'm on Team Bradley Biel here.
100%.
J. Mack with the news.
Well, that's the news.
And thanks for stopping by.
The Hurd-Ly News.
Now, I will say this.
Do I think NBA stars like Embed should play in games?
Yeah, I think it stinks when a fan pays hundreds of dollars to go to a game or take their kids,
and the players don't play.
So there are times when I think the fan should have a voice.
I really, really, it bothers me.
I'm an NBA fan, and there'll be, you know, six to ten games a year.
I regular season, playoffs I always watch.
But there's some regular season, Saturday night games.
Last night was a game I would have watched.
There was a game earlier this year.
I forget what it was.
It was Janus.
I think the Warriors were playing Janus or something there about.
Yonis didn't play, and I was like, come on,
this is a big one you've got to play.
But if you're screaming at players for bats,
gambling guy, and I'm pro gambling.
just as many bets on the other side.
Nobody's out to get you.
You lost a bet.
And don't bet.
I'm sorry, if your mom and dad didn't teach you how economics work,
you've got to get coping skills.
That's not on the athlete or the ref.
Figure it out.
Don't bet what you don't have.
All right.
Meek Mill is telling Robert Kraft sign Lamar Jackson.
We'll talk about that next.
And it is interesting how momentum plays
a huge part in how all of us are treated. And I want to talk about that next. Sunny Vaccaro,
top of next hour, the Jordan movie, Air Movie with Jordan Nike, the story of Michael Jordan's mom
and Sunny Vaccaro and how Air Jordan came about. It's a fascinating movie. I saw it a week or two
ago. It's about Sunny Vaccaro. You don't see a lot of Michael. It's Sunny's story, being able to lure
Jordan, who was a converse
Adidas kid, over to Nike.
It's fascinating. It's smart.
It's funny. Easy to root for.
And Sonny joins us next hour.
Be sure to catch live editions of the herd

Pacific. Hi, this is Jay Glazer,
and you may know me for the world of football

HBO's ballers. What you don't know
is for my entire life, I have lived
in something I refer to as the Grey.
Depression, anxiety.
So now I'm coming out with a new podcast.
Unbreakable, a mental health podcast with Jay Glazer,
where each week, while we talk about mental health,
I hope to describe it, give it words.

Imagine an Olympics where doping is not only legal, but encouraged.
It's the enhanced games.
Some call it grotesque.
Others say it's unleashing human potential.
Either way, the podcast's Superhuman documented it.
all embedded in the games and with the athletes for a full year.
Within probably 10 days, I'd put on 10 pounds.
I was having trouble stopping the muscle growth.

Do you remember when Diana Ross double-tap little Kim's boobs at the VMAs?
Or when Kanye said that George Bush didn't like black people.
I know what you're thinking.
What the hell does George Bush got to do with Little Kim's?
Well, you can find out on The Look Back at it podcast.
I'm Sam J.
And I'm Alex English.
Each episode, we pick it here, unpack what went down, and try to make sense of how we survived it.
Including a recent episode with Mark Lamont Hill, waxing all about crack in the 80s.
To be clear, 84 is big to me, not just because of crack.
I'm down to talk about crack on day, but just so you all know.
I mean, at this point, Mark, this is the second episode where we've discussed crack.
So I'm starting to see that there's a through line.
We also have AIDS on this tape.
right now.
Thank you for finishing that sentence.
I don't think there's a more important year for black people.
Really?
Yeah.
For me, it's one of the most important years for black people in American history.

Sometimes when we're in the pursuit of the thing,
we get so wrapped up in the chase
that we don't realize that we are in possession of the thing.
And we're still chasing it.
And we don't know when we've done enough.
Because people scoreboard watch.
Life becomes about wins and losses.
Steve Burns, Dustin Ross.
Because you find it important to be a good person
while you hear on earth.
Are you a good person because you're afraid?
Because that's two different.
intentions, bro.
Absolutely.
And that's two different levels of trust.
I want you to just really be a good person.

Saturday on Fox,
baseball is back as the Giants battle reigning MVP,
Aaron Judge, and the Yankees.
Or the Phillies take on Corey's
and the Rangers. It all begins Saturday at 3.30 Eastern on Fox and the Fox Sports app.
So Meek Mill apparently texted Robert Kraft and says, go get Lamar Jackson. And Robert Kraft
said that's Bill Belichick's call, which historically outside of the Garoppolo move,
that's what Kraft has done. Basically, you know, Bill runs the show. So it's interesting.
I think it's worth a discussion to trade like a Mack Jones and a first round pick for
Lamar Jackson. It's worth a meeting. I mean, the Patriots miss
Playmaking and speed, Lamar gives you both.
They've not been great at first round picks.
I'd give one up.
The last pro bowler they drafted in the first round was 2012 Chandler Jones over a decade ago.
The last offensive player they drafted in the first round that became a pro bowler was 2005,
a guard out of Fresno State, Logan Mankins.
You can't count Mack Jones.
He was an alternate who got on the field or into the game based on other players backing out.
They don't hit home runs in the first round.
They don't draft offensive skill players well, and they're slow.
And right now, they're over-underers about eight wins.
It hasn't been released yet, I don't think.
My guess is it would be about eight wins.
Eight and a half, I'd bet the under.
Eight, I'd probably bet the over.
I think they're a nine-and-eight football team with Mack Jones,
who has a functioning offensive coordinator now,
but no skill at all on the outside to compare to Buffalo, the Jets, or Miami,
or the rest of the AFC for that matter.
So, but there is something called career momentum.
Whenever I watch the media do this, it's as if they don't include what's previously
happened.
I mean, why do you create resumes, right?
You want to look at what somebody, a man or a woman, a boy or a girl, somebody has done
previously.
Ooh, they're very successful.
They were a good student.
First two jobs, they were productive.
Let's hire them.
These are not one-offs.
They're not individual moments.
The league tends to be a copycat league, good or bad.
So let's look at the last seven big contracts handed out to quarterbacks.
I mean, massive deals.
So let's go one through.
Okay, so Kyler Murray, 2022.
Right now, Arizona regrets it.
Deshawn Watson.
Cleveland may regret it.
I think they overpaid for him.
I think it's an egregiously bad deal.
Then there's Russell Wilson.
I think he turns it around, but last year was frightening.
Frightening.
You could be locked into a guy who is quickly regressing.
Aaron Rogers, 2022.
His off-season commitment has decreased noticeably since he signed the deal.
Now you can't get a hold of him in the off-season.
Matt Stafford looked great for a year.
He's falling apart physically.
Josh Allen, that one's worth it.
That one I would have done, big, strong, and healthy.
I am worried that he was turnover prone in college and early in the NFL.
Then Brian Daible refined him, polished him, cleaned him up.
Daybull leaves, he's still great, but now is reverting back to more crucial mistakes.
And then Dak Prescott.
Contract's fine, but most people in the league believe at this point you overpaid for him.
He's very reliant on those around him.
So, yeah, the current momentum is you got to go back to the eighth contract, Mahomes, where it was a home run.
And that was a team-friendly deal.
And you also have an organization, the chiefs, that drafts and develops at a really high level.
So, yeah, I get Baltimore saying, you know, we're worried here a little bit.
And I get New England perhaps passing.
Now, I think the questions about Bill's future, I say,
saw, I know two things. One, everybody knows, Bill is into the league's history. He's like an
encyclopedia for NFL history. That's pretty cool. His dad was way back when a scout,
started all the scouting stuff, right, wrote a book on it. Also, we know this. I've been told
this that the all-time wins that Don Shula has, he needs 30 more to suppress Shula. It means
something to Bill. He would have the most Super Bowls and the most wins. It means something to
Bill. Nothing wrong with that. He's committed himself to the game. He is the greatest coach ever.
I totally understand it. But my takeaway is that's four years away. 30 wins is four years away.
So if Bill's going to do it Bill's way, Bill O'Brien worked with Deshaun Watson. That's his new
coordinator. I would give it a meeting. Mack Jones in a first round pick. Hey, Baltimore,
they've won Super Bowls with guys that play like Mac, pocket guys, Flacco and Delf.
Maybe they'd be interested.
But I do, Robert Kraft talked about Bill's future
and kind of the state of the Patriot to the league meetings.
I'd like him to break Don Schuller's record,
but I'm not looking for any of our players to get great stats.
We're about winning and doing whatever we can to win,
and that's what our focus is now.
and it's very important to me that we make the playoffs,
and that's what I hope happens next year.
For the record, the Patriots always ask players to not care about stats.
Right?
Do your job.
Take a little less money.
It's not about your stats.
So even though it matters to Belichick to break Don Chula's record,
you'd be a total hypocrite if you keep him on and that's the focus for the next four years.
It's not like he's four wins shy. If you got the Patriots winning eight, nine games a year in their
division and that's kind of what they look like going forward. That's four years of bill.
And right now they are totally tone deaf offensively. Belichick on why fans this year should be
excited about the team. What would you say to them to give them a reason to be optimistic for
what's ahead? The last 25 years.
We'll see.
First round pick in Mac Jones for Lamar.
Now, Lamar's much more dynamic.
Lamar, I think, can get to a Super Bowl.
I don't think currently in the AFC, Mac Jones can.
But Baltimore could say we've got a great defense and special teams.
We just don't want to get locked into a contract with a quarterback that get hurt and has been hurt.
And I could see New England saying, here's what we do.
don't do well. Speed and playmaking. We get Lamar. We solve both. I think it's worth a meeting.
Would you, J. Mac Jones for Lamar? First rounder in Mac Jones for Lamar. You're New England.
I would do it in a heartbeat if I was New England, but I'm not doing that if I'm Baltimore.
Why on earth would I want Mac Jones? First of all, I don't anticipate these two trading.
They haven't liked each other for a while. Yeah. I don't see that happening.
But if I can upgrade from Mac Jones to Lamar Jackson, I do that yesterday. The one that really galls me,
the Colts, which we've talked about, is the Atlanta Falcons. And you've been hammering away at this.
They went all in last year for Deshaun Watson. Everything. We're into the final moment. And yet,
aren't interested in Lamar. What am I missing? Do they know something we don't? Also,
they don't appear interested in drafting a quarterback this year. So they went all in on Deshaun,
who I don't think is as good as Lamar, but they're not interested in drafting a quarterback or
Lamar. So does Desmond Ritter have something that nobody else on planet Earth knows? Is he the best
practice quarterback in the league? I don't know. There's got to be a reason they have zero interest in
Lamar Jackson. Caleb Williams, USC. That's their... I don't think they're going to be that bad,
but is this old school owner, Arthur Blank, been around forever? What's his relationship like with
the Ravens owner? Is there like some wink-wink? Not collusion, but hey man, we're not doing the
all guaranteed contract. We're just not doing that. Is that an Arthur Blank like firm line in the
sand. Well, Jim Ursae said yesterday, it's not about a money issue. It's about we're not
guarantee, we don't like guaranteed contracts. Media, you got to come to terms with this.
Hey, hold on. You know what I like? I like wins. And availability.
All right. Okay. That's, you can't tell me that doesn't matter. Real quick.
Greatest quarterbacks in the history of the Falcons franchise. Let's just rattle them off.
Matt Ryan, he won an MVP.
Michael Vic. Michael Vic. Who else?
Lamar gets instantly in that discussion the second you sign him.
I'm, he's been so good.
Oh, I'm for Atlanta getting Lamar Jackson.
It makes total sense.
You would have arguably the best player in the division at the most important position
the second you made the move.
Right.
So to me, it absolutely, I'd make that move.
And Carolina's going to have a rookie quarterback, right?
Derek Carr is good, but Lamar Jackson's better.
Of course.
And let me just ask, this whole, like, I'm not guaranteeing contracts at all.
Okay, I understand.
you want to do that for your business.
You don't want to guarantee contracts.
You know what?
I don't really care what you want to do.
I want to do what's best for my team.
And if that is getting an amazing quarterback who's won an MVP,
yeah, he's had a couple injuries.
But if he's on the field playing,
we're probably in first place at our division for the next three years.
Yes.
I'm going to do what's best for my team,
and I'm going to give him the fully guaranteed three or four years.
I just, I don't see why that's that difficult.
Well, I think if Lamar had never missed starts,
it would be much easier.
I don't, there is outside of Mahomes,
there doesn't appear to be a perfect quarterback.
There really isn't, right?
Like Herbert hasn't won enough.
Burroughs been hurt.
Alan makes too many mistakes.
There's no,
Mahomes is it.
So it comes down to what is the flaw
that Lamar has?
It's not passing from the pocket,
as many speculate.
That's not the issue.
It is injuries.
That one scares people.
That one really,
I can coach you out of,
of flaws, Josh Allen, Brian Dable.
I can't coach you to healthy.
So every quarterback outside of Mahomes has something you got to deal with.
Cincinnati is very concerned about Joe Burroughs health.
He can't take another big injury to a knee.
So what do they do?
They built that O line.
They spent money on the O line even this off season.
They doubled down in the O line.
So Lamar's flaw is something that I think...
Is it a flaw?
Missing games.
That's not good.
I mean, he got hurt twice.
Sunny Vaccaro.
Can't wait next.
