Starting point is 00:00:00 This is an I-Heart podcast. Guaranteed Human. Another podcast from some SNL, late-night comedy guy, not quite. Unhumor me with Robert Smygel and friends. Me and hilarious guests from Bob Odenkirk to David Letterman help make you funnier. This week, my guest, SNL's Mikey Day and head writer, Streeter Seidel, help an a cappella band with their between songs banter.
Starting point is 00:00:23 Where does your group perform? We do some retirement homes. Those people are starving for banter. Listen to humor me with Robert Smigel and friends on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Imagine an Olympics where doping is not only legal, but encouraged. It's the enhanced games. Some call it grotesque.
Starting point is 00:00:42 Others say it's unleashing human potential. Either way, the podcast's Superhuman documented it all, embedded in the games and with the athletes for a full year. Within probably 10 days, I'd put on 10 pounds. I was having trouble stopping the muscle growth. Listen to Superhuman on the IHard Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. A win is a win. A win is a win.
Starting point is 00:01:07 I don't care what I'm saying. Yep, that's me, Cliver Taylor the 4th. You might have seen the skits, my basketball and college football journey, or my career in sports media. Well, now I'm bringing all of that excitement to my brand new podcast, The Clifers Show. This is a place for raw, unfilled conversations with athletes, creators, and voices that not only deserve to be heard, but celebrated. So let's get to it. Listen to the Clifford show on the IHeard Radio app,
Starting point is 00:01:32 Apple Podcast, or wherever you get your podcast. And for more behind the scenes, follow at Clifford and at TikTok's podcast network on TikTok. Thanks for listening to The Heard podcast. Be sure to catch us live every weekday on Fox Sports Radio in noon to 3 Eastern 9 a.m. to noon Pacific. Find your local station for the herd at Fox SportsRadio.com or stream us live every day on the IHeart Radio app
Starting point is 00:01:55 by searching Fox Sports Radio or FSR. Now let's get this party started. You're listening to Fox Sports Radio. Oh, here we go on a Monday. It is great to have you in. Summer is officially here. Sunshine everywhere, live in Los Angeles. On a Monday, it's the herd.
Starting point is 00:02:19 Wherever you may be and however you may be listening. Thanks for making us part of your day. We know there's a lot of choices out there. One hour from now on a Monday, Colin Wright, Colin wrong. This was one of those weekends. Kind of go outside.
Starting point is 00:02:33 I was looking out in the Pacific Northwest. It's going to be 80, 90 degrees later this week. Like, it's starting to get warm everywhere. Such a good time. You were at the beach. It wasn't a big weekend to watch a lot of TV. I watched USA, Jamaica soccer Saturday night. They were lucky to get a draw on that part of it.
Starting point is 00:02:50 Not a great performance from the U.S. But we were missing multiple stars. Yeah, it was like the B squad. But still, you got to put away Jamaica. But what for a bike ride on the... Strand, which is lovely. Little basketball, you know, a couple hours of hoops. Great weekend. So Ian Rappaport's a good NFL reporter. He was talking last week on the Pat McAfee Show, and he said, the Jordan loved things not going to be like Patrick Mahomes. He said, you know,
Starting point is 00:03:15 like, yo, we got something. They knew in advance. Patrick was really good. He said, that's not like that in Green Bay. So I remember the first year Mahomes got drafted, and he didn't play into the last week. But, video started coming out in camp of Patrick Mahomes making place. Peter Schrager came to me and said, look at this piece of video. You can't believe this video. So the reason that video got out, Kansas City was willing to let it out because it was practice video and the kind of practice video from a tower that you don't normally get.
Starting point is 00:03:48 But they wanted to show people, yeah, our draft pick, it's something special. Watch out. I remember three years ago when Daniel Jones got drafted at number six by Dave Gellell and it was roundly criticized as a reach. And I never forget the first camp. Suddenly video, slow-mo video of Daniel Jones. It looked like chariots of fire. With completing passes, beautiful throws, slow-mo.
Starting point is 00:04:14 It got out because the giants were trying to, you know, reduce the inflammatory comments on Dave Gettlement who's since been fired. Jordan Love has been with the Packers for four years. you cannot find one intense wow moment of practice video, not one. I was told in the last 72 hours by an incredibly connected Green Bay source. I'm not telling you if it's a current Packer or it's a former one, I'll protect him. But he said when he was around him for multiple years, he never saw a wow pass. He never saw a wow moment.
Starting point is 00:04:51 And this player doesn't or didn't always love Aaron Rogers. maybe that's why he talks to me. But he said, four years, three years, I never saw the juice. I never saw it. So I went and looked this morning, Joe Burroughs first camp in Cincinnati, USA Today headline. Joe Burrow rips through the Bengals first team defense. That was the first OTA. Later that camp, Zach Taylor, quote, Burroughs been great, as advertised, amazing player.
Starting point is 00:05:23 Four years, Jordan loves Zippo. It's excitement that couldn't be contained with Mahomes or Joe Burrow. People talk. If you went to a movie and it was a great movie, would you wait four years to tell anybody? If you went to your local casino or your local, you know, a theater and saw a great comedian, would you wait four years to tell anybody? You'd call them the next morning. You'd text him on the way home.
Starting point is 00:05:51 Four years, nothing. It reminds me if you listen to all the wording from the Packers over the last year, it's been patience. Let's temper expectations. It sounds like a doctor. You ever go to a doctor's office? And they're not quite sure what it is, but they say stuff like, we need to take another x-ray. Or we don't think it's anything, but let us take one more look. Let's be patient.
Starting point is 00:06:19 Let's wait until we see more. That's usually not great news. And so when the source told me in the last three days, no juice, no wow, multiple years, it aligns with the reason that we're getting no video from him. We're also getting no video the last two years from Trey Lance at practice. You know, it's always that little throwback and forth stuff. It's never like real practice footage, what you saw early with Patrick Mahomes. Teams want it out. It gets out.
Starting point is 00:06:48 Green Bay doesn't want it out. So this is free agent week in the NBA. Friday is the official day, meaning the stuff's going to get consummated here, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday. Sort of like the NFL trade deadline. The stuff all gets wrapped up far before. And so the real question, the real player hanging out there, Draymond Green, but he's going to go back to the Warriors, even though reportedly this morning the Mavs and the Kings are both interested. he's going to meet with the Blazers.
Starting point is 00:07:20 I think it's today or tomorrow. And the executives are going to sell them on something. But the interesting thing about Damien Lillard, he's actually a very old 32 because he played real college basketball and carried a college program. And for 11 years, he's carried an NBA team. And in the last two years, he's had significant injuries missing about as many games as he plays. Now, we like Dame, but something to run. remember here is the Blazers have really been in NBA purgatory for the last several years, really most of the last 10, somewhere between 11th and 16th in the league. In fact, over his career,
Starting point is 00:07:59 they've averaged 14th. Not good enough to regularly get into the lottery, not good enough to attract star-free agents, but you can sneak into the playoffs and then you get a guy in the draft that's okay, nothing special. So this was a rare year. So Portland, Dame gets hurt. They bought them out and they get the number three pick. They get lucky in the ping pong ball lottery and they get Scoot Henderson, who just happens to play Dame's position. Younger, little bigger, very dynamic, comes in healthy, can't shoot like Dame, but it all worked out. They literally got Dame's replacement. And yet they're meeting this week. And again, Dame has played 87 games and missed 77 in the last two years. So if you're not going to move now, what's the point? There's two things to remember here.
Starting point is 00:08:47 It doesn't matter if it's a stock. I mean, players, to some degree, are a little bit like commodities. You know, you invest in something. You hope you can keep it forever. I mean, who wants the day trade stocks? But sometimes you're like, you know, I think at peak, there's new leadership. I don't feel great about it. We've got a cultural change.
Starting point is 00:09:04 So if you look at Dame, last two years, a lot of injuries. He is a small athlete starting to get hurt more often. Bad sign. The second thing is, the. league is pivoting to size and big and length and dame's tiny and so like now's the perfect time this week it is screaming next chapter turn the page get dame to a winner and it's got sort of a lion's rams mat staffer jared goffield where miami is close but they really need the man to take him over the top they can keep getting to these finals with tyler hero and jimmy butler and bam they need
Starting point is 00:09:47 a Stafford. They need icing. They need the guy that get him over the finish line. That was Stafford to the Rams. He was older. He'd been beat up. But they knew just in terms of talent and playmaking. Matt's better than golf. And the Lions, by the way, like the Blazers,
Starting point is 00:10:06 got a bunch of draft picks. They kind of wanted to do a reboot. While they did, they got enough in return the Lions, Jared Goff, so they'd be a viable team. They would be good. They could win games. They could create a culture. They could create momentum. You're not getting nothing for Dame Stoddemeier. Damien Lillard. You're not getting nothing for him. He's got a market. It's small. He's small. He's aging fast. He's had back-to-back banged up seasons. But with Dame, you're going to get something. And the other thing that plays in a Portland's hands to do it now is, is that they've got two young players they like and scoot.
Starting point is 00:10:43 So the truth is if they moved off Dame, they could get draft picks and they could get like B, B minus players. They would not be great. But they'd be really young and really exciting with a chance to get back into the lottery and get their second lottery pick. So from today until next year's lottery in one year, you could have two lottery picks and Scoot's going to be something special. There's no question that. He's a dynamic player. whether or not he leads you to titles, that may be next year's lottery pick. It's supposed to be a pretty good draft.
Starting point is 00:11:18 So you do get to a point where, you know, buy low, sell high. It's time to move Dame for Miami. Dame's got about two more years. It's a lot of wear on those tires. He's carried the franchise for over a decade. He carried Weaver State for a few years. Like there's a lot of miles on him, a lot and a lot of bigger bodies leaning on him and pounding on him. And I don't think he has a lot of great years left, but I do think he probably has
Starting point is 00:11:45 two to maybe three. So it's an exciting week. Dame meeting now, either today or tomorrow, with Blazer executives. I think now's the time because they've been in that. The purgatory in the NBA is 11 to 17. And we looked it up this morning. In Dame's career, they've averaged 14th. Not good enough to get a pick, not good enough to attract free agents, but not bad enough. to really reboot. It's time for both, Miami and Portland. All right, a lot of stuff today. So I was looking at something, I think you'll like this.
Starting point is 00:12:23 The last five years, at least one team in the NFL, often two, go from really, really special to the next year, Rams' Super Bowl winner to bad. It's gone that way. we went back five years, and it's always the same reason. Is there a team this year? It's not Buffalo. Is there a team this year that we know they're good?
Starting point is 00:12:53 We know they're ascending. But there are five or six blinking red lights to keep your eye on. I think you'll be surprised by who it is. Be sure to catch live editions of the herd weekdays in noon Eastern, 9 a.m. Pacific. on Fox Sports Radio, FS1 and the IHeart Radio app. Imagine an Olympics where doping is not only legal but encouraged. Starting point is 00:13:44 I don't care what you're saying. Yep, that's me, Cliver Taylor the 4th. You might have seen the skits, the reactions, my journey from basketball to college football, or my career in sports media. Well, somewhere along the way, this platform became bigger than I ever imagined. And now I'm bringing all of that excitement to my brand new podcast, The Clifford Show. This is a place for raw, unfiltered conversations with some of your favorite athletes, creators, and voices that not only deserve to be heard, but celebrated. One week, I'll take you behind the scenes of the biggest moments in sports and entertainment, and the next we'll talk about life, mental health, purpose, and even music. The Clifford Show isn't just a podcast, it's a space for honest conversations, stories that don't always get told, and for people who are chasing something bigger.
Starting point is 00:14:28 So, if you've ever supported me, or you're just chasing down a dream, this is right where you need. to be. Listen to the Clifford show on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcast. And for more behind the scenes, follow at Clifford and at TikTok Podcast Network on TikTok. Do you remember when Diana Ross double-tap Little Kim's boobs at the VMAs? Or when Kanye said that George Bush didn't like black people. I know what you're thinking. What the hell does George Bush got to do with Little Kim? Well, you can find out on the Look Back at it podcast. I'm Sam J. And I'm Alex English. Each episode, we pick a here. unpack what went down and try to make sense of how we survived it.
Starting point is 00:15:06 Including a recent episode with Mark Lamont Hill, waxing all about crack in the 80s. To be clear, 84 was big to me, not just because of crack. I'm down to talk about crack all day, but just so you all know. I mean, at this point, Mark, this is the second episode where we've discussed crack. So I'm starting to see that there's a through line. We also have AIDS on the table right now. Then you're finishing that sentence. Yes.
Starting point is 00:15:30 I don't think there's a more important year for black people. People. Really? Yeah. For me, it's one of the most important years for black people in American history. Listen to look back at it on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. It is great to have you. And this is one of my favorite times of the year. I was talking about this last night that there's about a six-week stretch now before we really get into the NFL preseason. No games you have to watch. I watched the Mets meltdown yesterday against the Phillies. It was crazy. You watch so. United States men's national team, mostly our backups, get a late goal and a draw. Thank good for Matt Turner's goaltending, a goalie play. There's nothing we have to rush home and watch generally. So it's a fun time.
Starting point is 00:16:15 Free agent stories are percolating. And also, we have a little extra time here to kind of go gaze into our college and football stuff. And I've said this, I can just feel football coming. So we went back this morning. And we always know that every year there are seven new players. teams. And any time you suggest a team that made it last year won't this year, people freak out. But there'll be seven new playoffs team. Half the playoff teams won't make it. If I simply suggested one won't make it, that fan base freaks out. But here's something else that happens in the NFL
Starting point is 00:16:48 for five straight years. A really high-end playoff team. Rams won the Super Bowl, falls off a cliff. Why? So we went back five years and we spotted the teams. These, are really good teams with a lot of momentum, getting to the playoffs, doing something special, off in a Super Bowl team, and then it goes sideways fast. So let's take the Rams. What happened? Massive offensive line injuries, you can put it up, and Matt Stafford got hurt. So an older quarterback who'd had a few injuries, O-line gets banged up, and it goes sideways. The year before, both the Ravens and the Seahawks, playoff teams, and then missed the playoffs in 2021.
Starting point is 00:17:36 What happened? Lamar Jackson got hurt, injuries to the offense, and Russell Wilson, 12 and 4 to a non-playoff team, 7 and 10. They got hurt. In 2020, who was it? It was New England. Tom Brady left. That'll do it.
Starting point is 00:17:54 12 and 4 to 7 and 9. In 2020, it was safe. San Francisco, 13 and 3 to 6 and 11. What happened? Jimmy Garapolo got hurt. They also had several injuries. In 2019, 12 and 4 to 5 and 11, the Chargers. And aging Phillip Rivers was completely vulnerable as the Chargers O line fell apart,
Starting point is 00:18:22 30th ranked offensive line according to PFF, and the Chargers were in the tank. And then in 2018, from, playoffs, 11 and 5 Carolina Panthers, Cam Newton never really healthy that year, they fall to seven and nine. In every single one of them, it is a, it is a quarterback that's either old, previously injured, moves a lot, gets hurt, and in many instances, the O line falls apart in front of him. So now, now we have to tell you a team that's, that we think is really good, but there's some blinking red lights. So remember Philadelphia, Jalen Hertz, second year starting last year,
Starting point is 00:19:07 runs more per game than any quarterback since Lamar Jackson. Got hurt. Little wide receiver drama, A.J. Brown. Leading rushers gone. Offensive line is really, really old. And the other thing is, Nick Seriani gave up play calling. and then they got really good. Uh-oh, they lost both coordinators, including the play caller,
Starting point is 00:19:34 Shane Steichen, who's now coach for the Colts. I know Eagle fan, you know you're getting back to the Super Bowl, but there's a lot of blinking lights here. Go look at the Chargers, old offensive line fell apart. The Rams, old or underperforming offensive line fell apart. Stafford had been hurt. Garoppolo had been hurt. Lamar had been hurt.
Starting point is 00:19:57 Russell was aging moves around. Bad Seahawk offensive line. Now, we think Philadelphia is the best team in the NFC. I do. Second best roster to San Francisco. But this team got really good when Nick Sariani said, I'm giving up the play calling. Shane Steichen is who Justin Herbert had a great rookie year with
Starting point is 00:20:18 and who Jalen Hertz went from, is he any good to a possible MVP? Coaching matters. He's gone. So is the defensive coordinator. Oh, the schedule, by the way, 10 teams that made the playoffs on the schedule. And by the way, from October 8th to December 17th, at Matt Stafford, at Aaron Rogers, Miami high-powered offense, Cowboys at Mahomes, Buffalo, San Francisco, at DAC at Seattle.
Starting point is 00:20:51 Long trips, a lot of trips, great quarterbacks, week after week after week. That is a 10-week stretch with only one layup, and that's a division rival, a team that's more talented Jay Mack and I have agreed than they get credit for at Washington. Washington's not great, but it's a division rival, and you're on the road. And oh, by the way, it's the week before the cowboy game, your biggest rival. That is a, that's your classic upset special alert. So I think Philadelphia is really good, but there's some blinking lights.
Starting point is 00:21:31 Old O line. Lose your O.C. Jalen Hertz moves. Schedule's brutal. No breaks in the middle. Lost your best leading rusher. J. Mack. I'm not saying they're not great,
Starting point is 00:21:46 but there's been at least one team that has been stupendous. Niners got to the Super Bowl, fell apart. Rams won the Super Bowl. Fell apart. The cam team on fire. Fell apart. It's something. You know the phrase right, church, wrong, pew?
Starting point is 00:22:00 Okay. I think you're on to something in the NFC. I just don't think it's the Eagles. That's schedule early. Mack Jones, Kirk Cousins, Baker Mayfield, Sam Howell. They could start four-in-old. They should start four-no. But you're right.
Starting point is 00:22:15 That Buffalo San Fran stretch with Casey and Dallas, that could be trouble. Could I argue? In November. Well, you could argue anything. You're pretty damn good at it. That was compelling. I'll say that. That 10-game stretch.
Starting point is 00:22:26 is rough. That is a lot of get on a plane and go face Mahomes. Getting a plane and go 3,000 miles to Seattle. Niners at home. Those are physical teams. Rivalry. I mean, ask yourself, who in this league goes at Stafford,
Starting point is 00:22:43 at Aaron, two and Mike McDaniel, Cowboys twice, at Mahomes, Buffalo Niners. By the way, one of the games you look at and you go, that Washington game, it'd be great except for you. It's there. It's a division rival. and it's the week before your biggest game every year on the calendar hosting the Cowboys.
Starting point is 00:23:00 And also it doesn't say it on the screen. So they open against New England and then they have Minnesota short week on Thursday night football. They do have to cross the country to face the Rams. I did because you said the Hertz injury. I totally forgot he was injured late in the season. By the way, he wasn't healthy even during the Super Bowl, despite as good as he was. He was amazing, yeah. We all knew he wasn't healthy the last six weeks of the year.
Starting point is 00:23:21 I thought they did a good job signing a backup because they lost Minchu. Marcus Marriota is a pretty damn good backup. Now, you know, limited, he can play like a few games before he gets hurt. But I'm not saying, I'm not just the facts of the facts. Five years, eight teams. Really good, not. Now, anybody's quarterback could get hurt. I mean, the one I look at is Tua, but Miami wasn't a great team last year.
Starting point is 00:23:45 What about the Minnesota Vikings? Well, we got into this discussion. I think a lot of people look to that and a lot of, but here's my take in the Vikings. So it's a bad division. We don't know what the Bears and the Packers are. It's a weaker conference. But here's the other thing. Cousins is a top 10, top 12 quarterback, and they have an offensive coach.
Starting point is 00:24:05 Ask yourself this. They're not going to go 11 and 0 and 1 score games. But they're also not going to go 0 and 11. They'll probably regress to 6 and 5. They have a very sharp coach. They upgraded their defense. My takeaway is they're going to be a very competent team. I don't think they'll go 13.
Starting point is 00:24:22 to 10 seems reasonable. But the team that's favored to win that division, we know Green Bay is worse, we don't know what Chicago is, people are putting way too much stock in an organization that literally screws things up. Detroit. We both like Detroit.
Starting point is 00:24:37 It's golf, it's Detroit, Dan Campbell's okay. If that's the safe, if that's the bet, it's not a great bet. And then the Giants would be the other team I would be looking at. New York Giants.
Starting point is 00:24:48 But we don't consider them a great team. No, but they want a playoff game. they made the playoffs. I thought they had a good season. First year under Day Bowl. Oh, I thought they massively overachieved. I think we're both waiting for Daniel Jones. We sold our stock like very high.
Starting point is 00:25:02 Yes. Right. Yeah, like me. All right. J. Mack with the news. No. No. Turn on the news. This is the herd line news.
Starting point is 00:25:11 Let's go to the AFC with Joe Burrow entering his fourth season in the league. One of the top quarterbacks in the NFL, probably number two behind Mahomes. Bengals are looking to lock him up to a long-term extension. and according to Cincinnati OC Brian Callahan, Joe Burrow continues to improve and is ready to take the next step with the offense. Joe almost coaches those guys. He's very clear on what he expects from a certain routes, where he wants guys to be, the timing that it happens.
Starting point is 00:25:39 It's really fun to listen to him. Explain to everybody what he wants. When he's talking to Jamar about something, all those young receivers are going to hear it. And so that part's really fun. Yeah. He is. I don't think there's any doubt. Did anybody call the Joe Burrow stuff when he was coming out? Yeah, no, no, there was a lot of stuff. I remember at the time, Joey and I kept saying,
Starting point is 00:25:58 could you stop comparing him to Joe Montana? Yeah. I mean, let's be real. He had one good year in college after being in college, I think five years because he transferred from Boston. One year, that's it. And if you watched his video, he always looked like, to me, size arm, escapeability, like a more talented Tony Romo. And Tony Romo was a very good B-plus quarterback. So I figured it'd be a really nice starting quarterback. I didn't think he'd be the second best quarterback in the league. But I will say there's two or three things that have worked in his favor. He inherited an offensive coach.
Starting point is 00:26:29 Well, Jamar Chase. That coach wasn't any good. That's right. No, I mean, Joe deserves credit. But it did help that Joe Mixon, Jamar Chase, T. He gets got real players. Now, he's overcome kind of an iffy old line. But Burroughs the great example.
Starting point is 00:26:44 You can have an owner we don't love, a front office we question, and a coach on the hot seat. And a bad O line, Joe Burrow got this team to a Super Bowl. For all the Daniel Jones fans, Cincinnati's never had a left tackle, like the current one, the back for the Giants is better. I mean, so, and we don't think they're receiving course good, but the defensive lines are very good for the Giants. Everybody makes excuses for their quarterback. The Bengals were the cheapest team in the league in kind of a laughing stock. They had a bad old line, a coach in the hot seat, an owner we don't respect a ton, and they got to the Super Bowl. And by the way, it didn't even go well for him.
Starting point is 00:27:24 He got injured. MCL, ACL, ACL, I mean, they couldn't get their old line right. So whenever I hear excuses about, well, we don't have this, this, this, your quarterback makes it all work. Andrew Luck, with the worst roster in the league, 11 and 5, 11 and 5, 11 and 5. A great quarterback makes it all work. My thing, you know, I knew you're the most generous grader in all of sports media. If calling Tony Romo a B-plus quarterback, does that make Joe Burrow like a 4.4 GPA with like straight A? You didn't like Romo?
Starting point is 00:27:54 I mean, he was good, but how was he B-plus when Joe Burrow is? Well, let me ask you. What's DAC? B-to-B-B-plus. I mean, I'm a little bit of a harsh grader. I think DAC is a C-plus quarterback, and I think Romo is like a B-minus C-plus. All right. Well, I consider DAC a B-C-corner.
Starting point is 00:28:09 I mean, Joe Burroughs, he got to a Super Bowl. No question. Early, he's not going anywhere. I kind of put all those Kirk Cousins, Derek Carr. No, Kurt Cousins is better than Dak and Romo. No? Romo's got more of a big game. Romo is a better athlete than Kirk Cousins.
Starting point is 00:28:27 And he's a much better thrower than Dak. Well, I'll have to dig into the numbers. That's an interesting one, but I think we both agree. Joe Burroughs and A plus. Like there's no flaws in his game. He's incredible. Ryan, go back and look at Romo's numbers. Maybe it's confirmation bias or something.
Starting point is 00:28:41 I think people liked him. He was an underdog. Wasn't he undrafted? Again, it's curious 20 years ago. That was Kurt Warner. You couldn't be Mark Brunel was a late quarterback, so was Brady. I always thought Romo because he was a cowboy quarterback, and because their games are all on TV, and Tony made him fascinating. What Tony Romo never gets credit for is they had a terrible O-line for almost all of his run, and the minute at the end of his career, when he fell apart, DAC got the best O-line in the league. Fair.
Starting point is 00:29:05 Because they had a bad O-line, so they addressed it in multiple drafts, and Tony got the hell beat out of him. And about the time he fell apart, Dak inherited Tyron Smith and Zach Martin and Z. Okay. I mean, again, but we're giving a lot of love to Tony Romo. Okay, if he's a B-plus quarterback, how many career playoff wins for Romo? I mean, listen, I know career playoff wins is a terrible stat, but I'll just say this. Mark Sanchez, who works at this network, watches a show, we text. Got four playoff wins. That's more than Tony Romo. And I know Sanchez didn't lead them to many of those playoff wins, but he had instrumental drives against the Colts.
Starting point is 00:29:37 So are you saying Sanchez is better than Romo? I'm not saying that, but like, I think we're given a little too much. I don't know. I have not looked at Romo's numbers. Now remember, he was in much more of a running league than it is now. Be real. Do you think his announcing and him being cool and, like, trendy has elevated his career, which was, it was okay? Well, you wouldn't put an average quarterback.
Starting point is 00:30:00 I mean, the reason Romo got that gig, A, was a cowboy, and B, it was a good quarterback. Okay, his career was 20 years ago. Can you tell me, like, a definitive moment in Tony Romo's career outside of botching a snap against Seattle in a playoff game? You know, I'm not questioning the guy. I like Romo. It sounds like a lot of Kirk Cousins moments I can embrace either who you like. By the way, by the way, did you look up any of Romo's numbers career-wise? I always thought he was a good solid B-plus guy.
Starting point is 00:30:25 Okay, 97-passer rating. I don't know. That's a Kirk Cousins. And by the way, he's more athletic than Kirk Cousin. Yes, he's more athletic than Cousins. So hold on, here we go right here. So Romo's career stats. So 97 passer rating, budding up against 100.
Starting point is 00:30:38 That is a B-plus quarterback. In a league that was not as offensive-friendly, 65% completion percentage. One, it was basically 78 and 49 in the regular season, and, in fairness to Tony, he had a coach that most of you don't like Jason Garrett, and he did not get the great DAC offensive lines. They addressed that. So when he got banged up at the end, then Dak got the best offensive line group in
Starting point is 00:31:03 the league for about four years running. He was in six playoff games. If he doesn't play in Seattle, he goes three and, he would have gone three and three. So what do you go? Two and four? He went two and four. And by the way, the snaps there. I remember that game.
Starting point is 00:31:17 A lot of money on the line. Parcells literally quit. I'm going to get sick. Yeah. So you said the quarterback record. Do you have it still in front of you? What's his record? 78 and 49.
Starting point is 00:31:28 That's pretty damn good. So let me ask you this. By the way, find out what the winning percentage is, because I believe 78 and 49 is a higher winning percentage than Bill Parcells, one of the five best coaches in my life. But that also could mean they had a lot of underwhelming playoff performances. they did that well in the regular season. So I'll ask you, Derek Carr just left the Raiders to go to the Saints, and his career record is like 17 games under 500.
Starting point is 00:31:51 Yeah, yeah. And we like him. Tony Romo. Tony Romo. No, I bet. I'm not ready to pick Carr in that, but I feel like cars had a pretty damn good career. I'm not real mathy, but 78 and 49 for Tony Romo on a coach that most he didn't like. Remember, it was Jerry's surrogate son?
Starting point is 00:32:08 He won 60, 6.14 winning percentage. I believe that is basically 61%. That is higher than Mike Tomlin. That's higher than... I think it's higher than Parcells. It's summer so I can ask this. Tony Romo, Better Career, or Andy Dalton, who went to a lot of playoffs games with the Bengals.
Starting point is 00:32:28 Tony Romo. He lost all of them. I just had to dig at Ryan, the Bengals fan over here. This all starts if you just turned in. I thought Burrow would be a better version of Romo, but I always thought Tony was a really good B-plus quarterback. Maybe I'm underselling him. He's a very good analyst.
Starting point is 00:32:43 Okay, so Bill Parcells, one of the great coaches in my life. Certain. 57% winning percentage. Tony Romo, 61. Now, Bill, also, it should be noted, tended to be a guy that went to a bad place and rebuilt it. That was his choice. But 61% in the NFL, you take out a Brady, you take out a Peyton Manning. 61% winning in this league, that's big boy.
Starting point is 00:33:07 That's a good quarterback. Yeah, it's good. Mike Tomlin, who is revered in football. ball. Great ownership. Big Ben, great D. It's 163%. And nobody would dispute Mike Tomlin's going to get Hall of Fame votes. Romo won 61% with a vanity-driven owner, Jason Garrett, and most of his career, an average O line running for his life. Would you agree, and sorry to go along here, but in the NFL, postseason success in Super Bowls doesn't matter as much as it does in the NBA. In the NBA, it's like, how many rings do you have? For some reason, we're wedded to rings. In the NFL,
Starting point is 00:33:41 It's not so much like Super Bowl championships. I think of Romo, two playoff wins in a career, and I'm like, is he that good? But you can put up good stats and win a lot of games. It's an interesting topic. Well, in baseball, we don't hold it against you at all. I couldn't even tell you of Sandy Kofax. I couldn't tell you how many World Series he has. He had great stuff.
Starting point is 00:34:00 Like he had, you know, he had all the no-hitter's. He had great stuff. In baseball, you don't hold it against anybody. I mean, you get bonus points, Derek Jeter, for winning and being great in big moments. But I think in baseball, we realize it's a pitcher sport. If you don't have that, like right now, you know, if you start looking at teams that, you know, the Dodgers bullpens a mess. Well, they're not as good as you thought. Look at the teams like the race have good pitching.
Starting point is 00:34:23 And the teams that are at the top of the division have good pitching. By the way, the Mets don't do anything well. They've struggled. So I think in baseball, I don't think we hold it against you. I do think in football, it hurts Dan Marino to not have one. I absolutely. And I think Dan, Dan and Aaron Rogers throw the two prettiest balls at. have ever seen in my life. I've been watching this sport since the 70s. Dan and Aaron
Starting point is 00:34:44 Rogers still the prettiest football ever. And Dan not having a Super Bowl, I think we don't talk about him much. We talk about Elway. We'll talk about Montana. We don't talk about Marino. Speaking of one Super Bowl, my Jets, Aaron Rogers, got to crowbar them early into a Monday show. Last year's number 10 overall pick, Garrett Wilson had an awesome rookie season with bad quarterbacks. Now he teams up with Aaron Rogers, and boy, he is really trying to soak it all up. Yeah, man, it's been really special. I've tried to be as much of a sponge as I can be and make sure I'm learning and You know, spending time with Randall and And Allen people that have been around there and so that you know I can make sure I'm picking up all the nuances of the offense
Starting point is 00:35:25 And try and put myself to where I'm feeling a hundred percent comfortable out on the field But it's been really fun man and obviously he can feel and you know there's a lot that comes with it though It's fun to play He is next to sauce gardener. He's your next best great young player He feels like a budding star personality, good interview. He's got the shades. Just looks cool. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:35:45 Sauce was a little better early. And that's because largely there's just not that many great corners in the NFL where there's 15 to 20 great receivers. Garrett's pretty special. Long, good hands, runs like a grown-up route, got speed. I think we're like 10 weeks away from week one. I think, I think Garrett Wilson is a one. He's your one, right?
Starting point is 00:36:06 You feel like he's a one. I can't wait for him to destroy Tredavius White week one. I know about the Buffalo Bills. Aaron Rogers, different ball of wax, or whatever the saying is, against Zach Wilson. Andy Reid, best coach arguably in football. Last 20 years, second best coach, the Belichick, won 64% of his games, McVeigh, 61, Peyton 63.
Starting point is 00:36:28 Tony Romo won 61% of his... Well, wait, if Romo's winning 61% then that means Jason Garrett's winning 61%, right? Well, yeah, I mean, again, I never hated Garrett. Most people didn't. But if you start looking at the brilliant offensive coaches who had Hall of Fame quarterbacks, Andy Reid, McVeigh, Sean Payton, they're winning like 62% of their games. Romo 161. And Romo played, I think I'm being fair on this, when the NFC was better than the AFC.
Starting point is 00:36:55 I mean, over the last three or four years, the AFC teams have all hit on quarterbacks in the draft, and the NFC teams haven't. Aaron now goes NFC, AFC. Russell Wilson goes NFC, AFC. Thank God for Jalen Hertz. The best team, the Niners don't even have a quarterback. So over the last like four or five years, the NFC's gotten weaker, the AFC's gotten stronger. For most of Romo's run, the NFC was the better conference.
Starting point is 00:37:17 Yes, yeah, for sure. Final story, USFL, Birmingham Stallions back to the USFL championship after a blowout, 4722 over the New Orleans breakers in the USFL South Division title game. Quarterback, Alex Magoo, had a huge day, continued his MVP campaign, 394 yards, five touchdowns in the blowout. sounds like maybe Alex could be playing his way into the NFL. Miami Dolphins might need a backup. He moves well. He doesn't have a huge arm. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:37:45 He moves well. That's worth something. You're giving your rant earlier about Jalen Hertz moving well and getting hurt. Jemak with the news. Well, that's the news. And thanks for stopping by. The Herd Lye News. Be sure to catch live editions of The Herd weekdays in noon Eastern 9 a.m. Pacific.
Starting point is 00:38:04 Paulie Fusco here with Tony Fusco. Yo. Of course you know us as the host of the number one rated show in all the sports talk, the Polly and Tony Fusco show. Yeah. Now the suits at Fox Sports Radio gave us this air time because they wanted us to tell you how great our show is. Why? Yeah, instead of us doing that, let us just let our millions of fans do the talking. Yeah, play the tape. You don't know crap about sports.
Starting point is 00:38:29 Why am I even on this crap? Whoa, whoa, whoa. That's the wrong tape. Wrong tape. Just forget that. Look, listen to the Pauliantony. Fusco show on the IHartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcast. Imagine an Olympics where doping is not only legal but encouraged. It's the enhanced games.
Starting point is 00:38:49 Some call it grotesque. Others say it's unleashing human potential.

Or when Kanye said that George Bush didn't like black people. I know what you're thinking. What the hell does George Bush got to do with Little Kim? Well, you can find out on the Look Back at it podcast.
Starting point is 00:40:29 I'm Sam J. And I'm Alex English. Each episode, we pick it here, unpack what went down, and try to make sense of how we survived it. Including a recent episode with Mark Lamont Hill, waxing all about crack in the 80s. To be clear, 84's big to me, not just because of crack. I'm down to talk about crack all day, but just so y'all know. I mean, at this point, Mark, this is the second episode where we've discussed crack. So I'm starting to see that there's a through line.
Starting point is 00:40:54 We also have AIDS on the table right now. Thank you for finishing that sentence. I don't think there's a more important year for black people. Really? Yeah. For me, it's one of the most important years for black people in American history. Listen to look back at it on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. This summer, it's the 2003 FIFA Women's World Cup with the defending champs, USA, chasing a historic third win in a row.
Starting point is 00:41:26 Don't miss the action when the tournament kicks off July 20th on the network. of Fox Sports. So we just watched a Denver go in and win a championship. How many stars did they have? Well, they had four really good players. Three of the four, Murray, Yokic, and Aaron Gordon played really well. Michael Porter struggled. But they still want a title going away with one of their four best players, really
Starting point is 00:41:48 having a bad series. The Nuggets were only 13th out of 16 teams in bench scoring. When the Milwaukee Bucks won a title, they were 13th out of 16 playoffs. teams in bench scoring. The better your stars, the less you need a bench. Now, the Warriors did win a few years ago over the Celtics a couple years ago. They had very good bench scoring. The bubble team for the Lakers had pretty good bench scoring. They needed it. LeBron was aging. But bench scoring is one of those things. It's like in the NFL a run game. A run game is really important if Kirk Cousins is your quarterback. It's not nearly as important if Burrow or, you know, Josh Allen and the bills have won a lot
Starting point is 00:42:27 the games with no run game and a bad old line. If you have Ryan Tannahill, you need a run game. Jared Goff's going to need a little bit of a run game. So I was thinking this weekend, the Sons did announce on Friday, Saturday, Frank Vogel, who loves working with Biggs, has convinced the GM and owners, I want to keep DeAndre Aiton. And you can roll your eyes at Aiton, but he's an 18 and 10 player. He's in his athletic prime and he gets up the floor. He's a very good offensive player within six feet. Doesn't have much range, but you don't need, when you have Kevin Durant and Booker and Bradley Beal, I don't need my center shooting jumpers.
Starting point is 00:43:03 And I was saying, I think the term star in the NBA is overrated. You know, I mean, John Wall was a star. I don't think he makes you better. Zach Levine's a star. Is he a winning player? I can go on and on about Westbrook. He's going to be a Hall of Famer. He's a big time star.
Starting point is 00:43:17 Is he a winning player? There's a reason he keeps bouncing around the league, right? And so if you told me, we just watched the Nuggets, With four really big-time players, one had a bad final, win it going away. I think the reason you can argue Phoenix should keep Aiton is look at their first four. If you judge teams, top five teams in the league, their best four players. Yokic, Murray, Gordon, Porter, and what makes that work is you have Gordon is like an elite defender. I think the sons are second, Durant, Booker, Beal, and Aiton.
Starting point is 00:43:51 Look at the number four player. That'll tell you. I think Milwaukee's third, Janice, Middleton, Holiday, and Brooke Lopez. Brooke Lopez is going to have a big market and make a lot of money. He's your four. Curry, Paul, Wiggins, and Dremont. Dremon may average eight a game. Look at his market this morning.
Starting point is 00:44:09 The Kings want him, and the Mavericks reportedly want him. And then I would put the Philadelphia 76ers, although they drive me nuts, Embed, Harden, Tobias Harris can score, and Maxie, who's an ascending star. I really like a lot. So a lot of you will look at the one, like for instance, Jay Maxa, what about the Lakers. Your four would be Rui Hachamora. He doesn't, he's not max. He's not going to be a Hall of Famer like Draymond. He wouldn't have a huge market like Lopez. He doesn't make what Aiton makes and he's not nearly as coveted as Michael Porter Jr. So that's the one team the
Starting point is 00:44:38 Lakers. Your four is just not good enough. By the way, you're one, Anthony Davis or LeBron. One gives you 50 games and the other was good offensively every other night. So what was the other team? Oh, you threw me at Boston. Boston and Memphis. Okay, so Tatum's a legit one. Brown's legit too. Porzingis, not a great locker room guy, hurt a lot, an okay three, but who's there for? You could go Derek White? Come on. I mean, again, is Chris Paul that much better than Derek White right now? Right now. Forget career. Yes. For a year. But you just played the injury card for LeBron and AD. Chris Paul's hurt all the time. But he's, again, I'm talking about Steph Curry and Draymond of the soul of that team. And Wiggins is better right now than Chris Paul. I'm so out on the Warriors. I'd pull
Starting point is 00:45:22 them from that list and put in Memphis. Jaron Jackson, John Morant, Desmond Bain, who you're down on, Desmond Bain is an awesome player, and your fourth guy is either, you know, Stephen Adams, Marcus Smart, who they just traded for. Memphis should be, I'm out on the war. I'm so disappointed in this Chris
Starting point is 00:45:40 Paul deal. I know it's like four days old. I'm still just pissed off that they got Chris Paul. They got smaller and older. Like, yeah, what are we doing? Well, what we're doing is it's the precipice of it is preceding, another move for a big. I think they'd like to figure out a way to get Brooke Lopez. Now, how's that happening? They don't have any money. You give it up Cominga?
Starting point is 00:46:01 Caminga and Clay Thompson? For Brooke Lopez? Wow. You want to ship Clay Thompson out of your FedEx? You want him out the door like tomorrow. Well, Middleton leaves. Who's your shooter on the wing? Fair. Clay Thompson. I would hope it would be Damien Lillard. But, uh, yeah. I don't think Chris Paul is the last move. I don't think Mike Dunle, of you, Jr. said, I want to get smaller and older. That's not what they need. They need to get younger. They're trying to get some youth on the floor. They need to get bigger. What if Mike Dunleavee you just said, I want to appease Steph Curry and Dremont? Get Jordan Pool out. And who do
Starting point is 00:46:34 you like? Oh, Kurtz Paul. It's a different. I'm not saying it's perfect. It's clunky. I mean, he's slow. Yeah. He wants to walk it up the court and run offense. That's not 2023. Well, he's also a pick and roll guy and the Warriors don't run pick and rolls. Oh, they can just run it with their big guy. Oh, wait, they don't have one. Honestly, I'm so perplexed by this. Yeah, well, that's something's not finished. And by the way, they may just run this to the trade deadline and go, yeah, we're smaller and older. But it does feel like Steph Curry, Chris Paul, if they kept Clay Thompson, Wiggins, Looney, Draymon is a playoff team.
Starting point is 00:47:09 It may not be a title team. Play in or playoff? It's a playoff team. I mean, because they got rid of the Jordan Pool mess and that was a huge issue last year. Give me, Sacramento Kings above the Warriors. Not with that current lineup. They got to get another shooter. Well, they're getting rid of Harrison Barnes.
Starting point is 00:47:23 Well, who are they getting? Grant Williams is on the table. Kyle Coosma's on the table. Why do I hear laughter in the studio when I say. Kyle Coosma, Grant Williams, murders row. Cusma's a good player, man. Schedule the victory parade. Colin right, calling wrong, around the corner next.
Starting point is 00:47:40 Another podcast from some SNL late night comedy guy, not quite. Unhumor me with Robert Smygel and friends. Me and hilarious guests from Bob Odenkirk to David Letterman, help make you funnier. This week, my guest, S&L's Mikey Day and head writer, Streeter Seidel, help an a cappella band

From 1979, that was a big moment for me. 84 was big to me. I'm Sam J. And I'm Alex English. Each episode, we pick a huge.
Starting point is 00:48:49 unpack what went down and try to make sense of how we survived it with our friends, fellow comedians, and favorite authors. Like Mark Lamont Hill on the 80s.
