Starting point is 00:00:00 This is an I-Heart podcast. Guaranteed Human. Another podcast from some SNL, late-night comedy guy, not quite. Unhumor me with Robert Smygel and friends. Me and hilarious guests from Bob Odenkirk to David Letterman help make you funnier. This week, my guest, SNL's Mikey Day and head writer, Streeter Seidel, help an a cappella band with their between songs banter.
Starting point is 00:00:23 Where does your group perform? We do some retirement homes. Those people are starving for banter. Listen to humor me with Robert Smigel and friends on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Imagine an Olympics where doping is not only legal, but encouraged. It's the enhanced games. Some call it grotesque.
Starting point is 00:00:42 Others say it's unleashing human potential. Either way, the podcast's Superhuman documented it all, embedded in the games and with the athletes for a full year. Within probably 10 days, I'd put on 10 pounds. I was having trouble stopping the muscle growth. Listen to Superhuman on the IHard Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. On the Look Back at it podcast.
Starting point is 00:01:06 From 1979, that was a big moment for me. 84 was big to me. I'm Sam J. And I'm Alex English. Each episode, we pick a year, unpack what went down, and try to make sense of how we survived it. With our friends, fellow comedians, and favorite authors. Like Mark Lamont Hill on the 80s.
Starting point is 00:01:22 84 was a wild year. It was a wild year. I don't think there's a more important year for black people. Listen to look back at it on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Thanks for listening to The Heard podcast. Be sure to catch us live every weekday on Fox Sports Radio in noon to 3 Eastern, 9 a.m. to noon Pacific. Find your local station for the herd at Fox Sports Radio.com or stream us live every day in the IHeart Radio app by searching Fox Sports Radio or FSR. We're listening to Fox Sports Radio.
Starting point is 00:01:59 Oh, here we go on a Thursday live in Los Angeles. It's the hurt. Wherever you may be. And however, you may be watching or listening. A lot of choices out there always appreciate you giving us part of your day. J. Mack, Greg CoSell in one hour. You bet football, fantasy football, want to get smarter at football. Greg CoSell, NFL meat sandwich coming up in one hour from now.
Starting point is 00:02:29 You know, I was thinking about this. It always bothers me when people need to have something in their lives to understand or be empathetic for others, right? Like, you know, if we should be aware that just because problems don't affect us, that they affect millions of Americans, you can have empathy for people's issues, even if you don't have the issues, right? Yeah, I tend to care more about myself, but I should. I should have more empathy. You're right. Right. And I also think when something great happens to you, there's no reason to be angry and envious,
Starting point is 00:03:04 which people are all over the Internet all day because it would be cool if it happened to you, the opposite. Wouldn't it be cool if you were a, let's be honest, St. Louis is boring. I mean, the most interesting thing is an ice cream, Ted Drews, and your baseball team. It's a boring city. But it wouldn't it be cool if the Rock and Taylor Swift loved your baseball team? And I mean, like, wanted to go to games all the time. you'd think it's pretty cool.
Starting point is 00:03:30 Cincinnati is, it's boring. I mean, it's boring. Wouldn't it be cool? I mean, be honest about this if like Denzel Washington and Tom Cruise were die hard bingo fans. Like flew in on game day. You'd think it was cool. You'd turn around and take a picture of them. This whole Travis Kelsey Taylor Swifting, they're both 33, they're both attractive and they're both rich.
Starting point is 00:03:55 I'm not into it. I'm not invested in it. But why wouldn't the NFL lean into it? I can remember. And nobody that's just sportscaster that's 20 or 30 probably can talk about this, because they didn't see it. But Jack Nicholson, even in Starr studied Los Angeles, Jack Nicholson, they would interview him during timeouts of NBA games.
Starting point is 00:04:19 Literally Bob Costas and Pat Riley. I mean, you'd have like a big broadcast team and there'd be a timeout. They wouldn't analyze the game. They go to Jack Nicholson, and this is L.A. Where there's a thousand stars at every game. And people in L.A. thought it was pretty cool. It's pretty cool.
Starting point is 00:04:35 When you go to a Knicks or Lakers game, these are star-studded towns, Broadway, actors, all over New York and L.A. Right. When you go to L.A. or New York, one of the first questions that a person in Los Angeles will ask, hey, did you see any celebrities? If you went to a club tomorrow night, saw a celebrity, a restaurant, you wouldn't tell people. In most markets, though, they don't go to your city. So you don't want to hear about it. Why would not the NFL lean into Taylor Swift?
Starting point is 00:05:05 She boosted the American economy this summer by $5 billion in consumer spending. That's just in the United States. UFC leans into Trump. People talk about it. NBA leans into celebrities at games. People talk about it. If Taylor Swift was an economy, she would be bigger. I looked it up this morning than 50 countries.
Starting point is 00:05:27 Watch out Canada, she's gaining on you. Last week in Boulder, Colorado, we've got a video of this. It was amazing. It was a who's who of celebrities. It was crazy. I got me honest with you. I sit and watching that game. Hey, Paul Pierce?
Starting point is 00:05:43 KG? Da Baby. Not my baby. Da baby. T.O. was there. Offset. Dwayne the Rock Johnson. Chauncey.
Starting point is 00:05:55 Kyle. NBA dudes. I like. Master Pete? All at a Colorado football game. Simba, C.C. Sabathia. It was crazy. It's kind of cool, though.
Starting point is 00:06:09 And I bet you in Colorado? I think it's kind of cool, too. You don't see that Buffalo football games. Here's another thing sports fans. Years ago when I worked at the other place, ESPN, I was probably my first or second year on the air. And I said this, and it was unbelievable at the pushback.
Starting point is 00:06:29 At the time Madonna was very big. I said, you guys understand that Madonna is like a thousand times bigger than Derek Jeter. Every like baseball diehod. No way everybody knows Jeter. And I'm like, nobody knows it. My mom doesn't know him. If my mom who doesn't know sports, my late mom, she doesn't know him. She knows, you know, she knows who Prince is, George Michael is, you know, was.
Starting point is 00:06:55 I mean, right? She didn't know who Derek Jeter was. Sports fans think everybody in the world knows Patrick Mahomes. Taylor Swift is at least 40 to 50 times more popular than Patrick Mahomes. Her Instagram is 273 million. His is six. She has like five times the Instagram followers of the National Football League. Now, IG isn't the be-all end-all of popularity, but it is a cultural touchstone for
Starting point is 00:07:27 who's popular, who's not. Sports fans, nobody cares about 99% of athletes globally. Messi, Ronaldo are significantly bigger than any of our stars, except maybe LeBron. Even Tom Brady, outside of an occasional game in London or Germany, soccer stars internationally are 100 times bigger. And music stars are even bigger than soccer stars globally. settle down, nobody's taken the games away from you. Taylor Swift isn't calling plays.
Starting point is 00:08:00 Ryan Reynolds, another actor, bought a Welsh soccer team. Predictably, the diehard soccer fans were like, bad. They had a U.S. tour, a Welsh soccer team you'd never heard of. Documentaries, merchandising exploded, they are now one of the it soccer clubs in the world. What's wrong with exposure? If an actor, an entrepreneur, a famous person could go to your games, be honest. It would be cool. Even in Los Angeles, I'm always amazed by this.
Starting point is 00:08:34 It's the power of Magic Johnson. In Los Angeles, he played on the court for years. He's all over town. He'll always come over and shake your hand. When Magic Johnson enters the Staples Center at a Laker game, I kid you not. Every time I see it, I'm just blown away by it. When magic simply enters the arena, people stand. It's Magic Johnson.
Starting point is 00:09:02 Hell, he played for your team. He was a player. He's now, what, in his 50s? Celebrity matters. Exposure matters. It's fun. I don't have to vote for Donald Trump, but I understand his power, his popularity among a sector of the United States.
Starting point is 00:09:18 I've been at UFC fights twice when he's there. The place goes nuts. It's okay. Hey, I'm going to give you an example. Every fan base brags about a certain celebrity that likes their team. I'm going to roll the tape and let you see some of them. Spike Lee and the Knicks. Drake in the Raptors.
Starting point is 00:09:41 Jack Nicholson and the Lakers. Lil Wayne, Jerry Seinfeld in the Mets, Mark Wahlberg in the Patriots, JZ and the Nets, LeBron. Well, he likes a lot of teams. State Rob Lowe and the Dodgers, Bill Marine, the Cubs, Will Farrell and USC, Paul Rudd and the Chiefs, Ashley Judd, Kentucky Basketball, Bradley Cooper and the Eagles, God, he loves them, Justin Timberley, Snoop Dog and the Trojans, Matthew McConaughey. All right, all right, all right, I love my horns. It's cool. Every fan base wants that. Every fan base thinks it's pretty cool. You go to a Texas
Starting point is 00:10:19 game, you don't point to the sideline and go, hey, look at their ninth trainer. You're like, look, all right, all right, all right. It's McConaughey. It's okay. It's fine. Nobody's going to take away our sports. Die hard sports. I have a saying I use all the time in my life. And I've used this on my show for 30 years. I've been doing this. Love your life. Like your sports. Otherwise, you lose perspective. I never lose perspective on sports. I'm wrong all the time. I have a segment acknowledging it. It's just sports. It's not like the weather. It's not like you, the economy. It's not like government.
Starting point is 00:10:58 It's, I talk sports, games, countless baseball games every night. Some watch them, some don't. It doesn't really matter. Sports is a big tent. Invite them all in. Taylor Swift isn't calling plays. She's not on the headset. Andy, Andy, I don't like that Z motion.
Starting point is 00:11:20 Mr. Reed, I don't like that Z motion. She's not telling Travis Kelsey, change the route with Mahomes. I like it. I like when I can see you. So do the route over to my side of the field by the press box. It's a big tent. Invite everybody in. Casuals, diehards.
Starting point is 00:11:34 I hear Kevin Durango, you're a casual. Damn right, I am. I love my wife better than the NBA. Sorry. Kids, my businesses, my friends, more than the NBA and more than the NFL. Perspective. They're games. That's all it is.
Starting point is 00:11:48 It's fun. Invite everybody in. You know what I did this summer? I took friends three different times to UFC fights. They wanted to go. I took a friend and his kids. I took a cousin Matt, took another friend. They'd never been.
Starting point is 00:12:05 I'm like, you've got to go to a UFC. It's really fun. It's wild. It's crazy. They're like, really? They left and they were new fans. Who won? I won because I like going to UFC fights.
Starting point is 00:12:17 They won. They had a great night. UFC won. Sports won. all won. If you want to complain about something in sports, here's something to complain about. This year, during the Yankee schedule, it was published somewhere. It may have been Andrew Marshan, New York Post, had it on a tweet or something, I think it was, that like four Yankee games in a week were on four different apps or streaming services or TV channels.
Starting point is 00:12:44 That pissed me off if I was a Yankee fan. Make it easier for fans to consume the sports they really, really like. That drives me crazy. I don't want to go to Fox Plus to watch the NFC. I like going to my Fox affiliate every Sunday, the late game for the last how many years, entertains the heck out of me. I make my nachos. I sit there and open up a Diet Coke and I sit back and I watch Fox and I love it. I don't want to go to Fox Plus Plus or an app or this or that.
Starting point is 00:13:13 That you can complain about. These sports are making a ton of money. They're not hemorrhaging it. And the fact that everybody makes us jump over hurdles and obstacles and apps. apps and streaming services drives me nuts. Make it easier for fans to get the games they really care about. But Taylor Swift, babe, come on in, sit next to me. It's awesome.
Starting point is 00:13:37 Sports is amazing. Wish it would have found out earlier. But it's for all of us. Each and every one of us. There you go. There's my lead today. Thanks for joining and Flying United. I don't have much else to say.
Starting point is 00:13:53 I'm just kidding. Greg CoSell in 45 minutes from now. Colt McCoy stops by as well. Jamek, any thoughts today? Big, big picture macro stuff? So is Taylor Swift going to be at the Vikings' chiefs game? I don't know. By the way, who's betting the Vikings? How is that with five yesterday?
Starting point is 00:14:10 Who's on the Vikings here? Is everybody? This is crazy. Look how much. The NFL lines this weekend. We got a story here coming up at about 20 minutes. It's blowing my mind on the drive-in-to-work. I don't know.
Starting point is 00:14:22 I'm a little shook. right now. What's going on in the NFL with gambling? Some of these lines are unbelievable, Colin. But look how passionate you are about it. Well, I want to win. You know, I like money. And it's fun. I'm coming off a rough week in fantasy. But, like,
Starting point is 00:14:38 just some of the injuries. Have you seen these injuries? Like the New York Giants? Remember, they tried the brotherly shove against the Seahawks. Two of their offensive linemen got hurt on the play and may not play this week. Can I give you advice on fantasy? Sure. I've never had
Starting point is 00:14:53 a fantasy about sports, all my fantasies are good. I never have a bad week with fantasy. All right. Just some advice from Uncle Colin. I've got a great parlay for you this weekend. Thanks to Draft King's sportsbook. New users use the code heard. H-E-R-D when you download the app. Let's have some fun. My parlay picks of the week via Draft King Sportsbook. I'm going to take the Eagles minus four at the Rams. The crowd will be 60, 40 Eagles anyway, a semi-home game. They're Undefeated for a reason. I don't know how the Rams offensive front matches up with the Eagles defensive front. I'll take the Eagles minus four. I'll take the Jets plus two at Denver. The Broncos last week had some offensive success because they played the Bears. Step up in class. Best defense
Starting point is 00:15:39 they faced. Zach Wilson righted the ship a little even though they lost. I'll take the Jets plus two. Cowboys plus three and a half of the Niners, I'll take Dallas. Listen, defensively, opposing quarterbacks have a 55 passer rating. Niners are better, especially in the red zone offensively, but the Cowboys have the better quarterback, offensive line special teams, and a little revenge I'll take Dallas. If you want to take the herd parlay, check out Draft King's sportsbook. New users use the code HED Hurd when you download the app. 21 plus in most eligible states, but age varies by jurisdiction. Eligibility restrictions apply. Gambling problem. Call 1-800 gambler. In New York. Call 877.7.8.

Starting point is 00:16:35 the podcast's Superhuman documented it all, embedded in the games and with the athletes for a full year. Within probably 10 days I'd put on 10 pounds, I was having trouble stopping the muscle growth. Listen to Superhuman on the iHeard radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.
Starting point is 00:16:54 A win is a win. A win is a win. I don't care what I'm saying. Yep, that's me, Clivert Taylor the 4th. You might have seen the skits, the reactions, my journey from basketball to college football, or my career in sports media. Well, somewhere along the way, this platform became bigger than I ever imagined. And now I'm bringing all of that excitement to my brand new podcast, The Clifford Show.
Starting point is 00:17:16 This is a place for raw, unfiltered conversations with some of your favorite Athletes, creators, and voices that not only deserve to be heard, but celebrated. One week, I'll take you behind the scenes of the biggest moments in sports and entertainment. And the next, we'll talk about life, mental health, purpose, and even music. The Clifford Show isn't just a podcast. It's a space for honest conversations, stories that don't always get told, and for people who are chasing something bigger. So, if you've ever supported me or you're just chasing down a dream,
Starting point is 00:17:44 this is right where you need to be. Listen to the Clifford show on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcast. And for more behind the scenes, follow at Clifford and at TikTok Podcast Network on TikTok. Do you remember when Diana Ross double-tap Little Kim's boobs at the VMAs? Or when Kanye said that George Bush didn't like black people. I know what you're thinking. What the hell does George Bush got to do with Little Kim? Well, you can find out on the Look Back at it podcast.
Starting point is 00:18:10 I'm Sam Jette. And I'm Alex English. Each episode, we pick you here. unpack what went down and try to make sense of how we survived it. Including a recent episode with Mark Lamont Hill, waxing all about crack in the 80s. To be clear, 84 is big to me, not just because of crack. I'm down to talk about crack on day, but just so y'all know.
Starting point is 00:18:31 I mean, at this point, Mark, this is the second episode where we've discussed crack, so I'm starting to see that there's a through line. We also have AIDS on the table right now, so. Then you're finishing that sentence. Yes. I don't think there's a more important year for Black. Black people. Really?
Starting point is 00:18:46 Yeah. For me, it's one of the most important years for black people in American history. Listen to look back at it on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. You're now entering the No Bull Zone, sponsored by credible great rates. None of the Bull. Kyle Shanahan, you've heard the term J. Mack wingman. Kyle Shanahan Niners coach is the world's best wingman. He talks you up.
Starting point is 00:19:13 he makes you look great. He never takes any of the credit. Here is Kyle Shanahan talking about last guy drafted Brock Purdy as quarterback. He just got to watch the tape. I mean, he plays at a high level every time he's been out there.
Starting point is 00:19:29 He's done it in a lot of different situations versus a lot of different defenses. On the road at home in playoff games, when injured, you can't do all that stuff. He's been out there too long. He's on tape. Yeah, I like Brock Purdy.
Starting point is 00:19:46 It's obvious he was underdrafted. Pooka Nakua, wide receiver Rams. He was underdrafted by about four rounds, three rounds. George Kittle on the Niners. Fifth round, going to be a Hall of Famer. Undrafted. Max Crosby for the Raiders. Great player.
Starting point is 00:20:01 Undered. Kurt Warner and Antonio Gates, the tight end, were not drafted at all. So there's about 15 guys a year, maybe not quite that many. Maybe it's 10, 12. Did you look at them and you think, you know what, they should have gone a round or two earlier? But there's also guys probably double that that should have gone later. We can all agree that Brock Purdy was under-drafted. But I have no idea what he would look like in Carolina.
Starting point is 00:20:26 Nobody can get open. Arizona, New York Giants. I don't love Daniel Jones, but he doesn't have a ton to work with. Puka Nakua, the receiver for the Rams. I love him, but he's got Matt Stafford and Sean McVeigh's schemes. How would he do with Kenny Pickett and Matt Canada with the Steelers? not as good. Two things can be true. And it happens all the time. A player is seriously undrafted and also is benefiting greatly from what's around him. And I think the greatest example of this
Starting point is 00:20:57 over the last half decade has been Dak Prescott. He was underdrafted a fourth round quarterback. His rookie year, he went 13 and 3. But you know what about that 13 and 3? The Cowboys had a top 5 defense, a Hall of Fame tight end, the number two-rated offensive line, and Zieg was arguably the best running back in the NFL, and DAC got some MVP votes. Since then, the offensive line has aged greatly. They only have one go-to-wide receiver. The tight end is not only not a Hall of Famer,
Starting point is 00:21:32 probably a two or a three, and Tony Pollard is not Zeeke in his prime. And in the last eight years, Dax got two playoff wins. DAC was underdrafted, and DAC needs all sorts of people around him to really play at the highest of levels. And that's okay. Two things can be true. For both the quarterbacks in the biggest game of the week, Niners Cowboys, both underdrafted.
Starting point is 00:21:58 Both need elements to be great. Jamack with the news. No, no, no, no, no. Turn on the news. This is the herd line news. I see squared. Let's start with the New York Giants. This story was fun yesterday.
Starting point is 00:22:15 Listen, Giants fans were booing lustily on Monday night football when they were awful against Seattle. Well, Evan Neal, who you see here on the screen, remember, he's a kid coming out of Alabama. And he won a lot at Alabama. He wasn't booed a lot at Alabama. And he was not happy that Giants fans were voicing their frustrations. Here's what he said. Why would a lion concern himself with the opinion of a sheep? The person that's commenting on my performance, what does he do?
Starting point is 00:22:43 Flip hot dogs and hamburgers somewhere that just further shows that people are fair weather. A lot of fans are bandwagoners. You can imagine this did not go over. I'm not bothered by it at all, but I think it's funny. So do I. There's a lot to unpack here. Neil has graded out as one of the worst tackles. He's had a terrible. He was promising.
Starting point is 00:23:04 He's had a terrible year. I mean, the top 10 pick. So 71 tackles per pro football focus. He's graded out as 68. He's allowed 20 pressures in just 260 snaps. I know. That's a lot of pressures, okay? Penalties, sacks.
Starting point is 00:23:18 But again, there's a guy who was never booted Alabama. They won a title. You know, he's a three-year starter. New York fans, New York is, I know it's a coastal elite city, but there's a lot of Giants fans are blue-collar. You know this. Well, I would say that. Not all.
Starting point is 00:23:32 I would say this. They have a lot of blue-collar fans, and they are angry in New York. Okay, here's the thing. The media can rip Nealiel. for doing this. But nobody's more thin skin than the media who takes shots at everybody and then gets
Starting point is 00:23:47 defensive on social media if anybody calls them out. So my takeaway is I don't think he should have done this but I don't think we in the media should criticize the kid because by the way I've seen the media I mean arguing back and forth with randos on social media. Nobody's more thin skin than the media. So my takeaway
Starting point is 00:24:03 is I wouldn't have said this. I think it's kind of funny but he's a kid. He made a mistake. He's getting booed. It's hard. I mean, you see some of these pro athletes, man. They are going down. They are spiraling because of what people are saying to the 23-year-old kid from the south, goes to New York.
Starting point is 00:24:20 The stadium's booing him. It's hard. I was talking to the situation with somebody this morning. And the social media aspect is really, really bad. What's happening on there's toxic. Listen, you and I are, I'm an adult. You're an adult. I'm in my 50s.
Starting point is 00:24:33 You're in your 30s 40s. I don't go to social media. I have a team that does it. Like, why? It's toxic, it's awful. And these guys are 22-year-old kids. It's very bad. And they live on their phones.
Starting point is 00:24:45 On young people. Obviously, you know, women are really impacted by these meatballs on social media. But even a guy like Evan Neal, he's a young kid. He basically had his whole high school and college on social media, right? He's used to this. He's not gotten a lot of heat. Now all he's getting is negativity all the time. So he sounds off on these guys.
Starting point is 00:25:03 And he has to it's apologized. But I don't know, Colin. things are trending very poorly for the New York Giants right now. You predicted it and people pushed back on you to your credit. I was more positive, optimistic. You were highly negative. You got crap for it and you were right. So all those fans who crushed you come in and give Jay Mack a little love.
Starting point is 00:25:22 No, they don't do that. No, no, it's all haters and anonymous. But bottom of mind, giants are interesting this weekend. Look at that line. They're in Miami against the, arguably one of the best offenses. You know, I hate big numbers. I like Miami. Well, can the Giants keep up?
Starting point is 00:25:39 Can they put points on the board to keep up with Miami? It doesn't matter. People, if you didn't watch the Miami Dolphin Buffalo game, the first three or four drives, it was like touchdown, touchdown, touch. Miami was overwhelmed in the second half. Miami's going to score 30 points. I don't think the Giants can score. Can this defense?
Starting point is 00:25:57 And by the way, the Dolphins defense played like crap, and they're getting crushed. And Vic Fangio has been quoted, it's been a hard week at practice for the Dolphins defense. They're going to play with a ton of pride. This is, you know, Thursday's. No, the Dolphins defense. Yeah, Thursday's moving day where we dig into the big spread. I like Miami. I haven't checked the weather in Miami.
Starting point is 00:26:15 Is it going to be a hot one for the Giants, okay? Coming off on Monday Night Football, body bad game, three of their offensive linemen. Andrew Thomas may not play. Now, the Giants were embarrassed, but that's because they're not good. The Dolphins were embarrassed and are very, very good. Good teams that get humiliated. Come back.
Starting point is 00:26:31 I mean, by the way, Cowboys, humiliated in Arizona. Thumb, hands. Belichick is worst loss ever. I do want to look into Daibol versus Fangio. That's an interesting matchup because Fongio's defense has had some issues
Starting point is 00:26:43 this season, Colin. Like Mac Jones put up some points on it. Like Mac Jones doesn't do anything. Interesting game. Next up, Joe Burrow has been taken off the injury report this week, said this is the best he's felt after a game this season.
Starting point is 00:26:57 The Bengals are in Arizona for a matchup with the Cardinals and Burrow explain why they're looking at this as a must win game. We got to go in and get a win. on the road. We haven't had a road win yet. We've pride ourselves on the road. We're playing a really good football team, good defense, good scheme. You know, we need it for our morale. We need it for the rankings.
Starting point is 00:27:16 We need it for everything. So this is the game that is just absolutely shocking me. You see bears are minus three at Arizona. That's at some spots. It has dipped in Vegas to two and a half. Yeah. Below a field goal for a team that was projected to be in the Super Bowl against a team that was supposed to be tanking. The side is clearly Cincinnati. Can you, though, put your after-tax dollars on the Cincinnati Bengals right now where Joe Burrow does not have the confidence to sit?
Starting point is 00:27:44 He's not even dropping back in the pocket and taking his time because he's so nervous, he can't run for him. He can't escape anything. I've had this theory in betting. Good teams that get humiliated are great teams to bet on. Like the Giants get humiliated, New England does. They're not great teams. If you have a high-level quarterback, offensive coach, you get humiliated against Tennessee. That was humiliating.
Starting point is 00:28:09 They were dog physically. I don't know if Cincinnati is going to cover. They are going to play so hard this week at Arizona. In Arizona now, it's not shocking anybody. Like, everybody's got film on Dobbs. It's like, oh, Arizona's a little feistyer than we thought. This is, I'll just say, at two and a half, it's one of the best bets of the week, Cincinnati. I would agree, Colin, and I really want to do this.
Starting point is 00:28:31 T. Higgins, by the way, not practicing yet this week with the ribs. Two road games so far for the Bengals. They have zero offensive touchdowns. I know. Two field. That's it. I kind of want to be with you, but, you know, it's tough to lose money on such a dog like Cincinnati. This team, hey, by the way, they lose this game. They're not making the playoffs.
Starting point is 00:28:50 Not in the AFC. Nobody told you when you bet you always win. I do not always win. If I always won, I would not be sitting here. No disrespect to you. All right. Final story. M.O.B. Postseason is underway.
Starting point is 00:29:00 Wowcard wrapped up last night when all four series ended in sweeps. Minnesota, Texas, Arizona, Philly all won 20. Okay, Texas and Minnesota moved on in the AL and the Diamondbacks in Philly's advance in the NL. This is the first time in MLB history there, but four sweeps in a single round in the playoffs. Philadelphia's got power. Keep your eye on him. Philadelphia's got, by the way, if you want to see a really interesting playoff series, doesn't Philadelphia, Ryan, play Atlanta next?
Starting point is 00:29:29 Isn't that the one that's coming up next? That's going to be so intense. So Atlanta's going to be a huge favorite. Best team in baseball should be. I'm not sure, honestly. I'll throw this out there. I'm not official. I think my favorite place to watch a baseball game on television is Philadelphia.
Starting point is 00:29:46 I know there's something about that fan base. Well, they got hit a grand slam. I mean, when I'm watching on television, there's a lot of great stadiums. I've been to 7, 8, 9, 10, 12. I've been to a lot of baseball stadiums. I used to take my kids every year to a couple. I would say watching a game played in Philadelphia is the most visceral, emotional experience I can have as a consumer watching on TV.
Starting point is 00:30:08 There's something about that fan base. It's almost a football fan base at a baseball game. They stand. They're loud, beyond loud. They're a little, you know, they're a little, they're lubricated. It's Philadelphia. They've had a couple pops. But I will say that will be a great, that will be a fascinating series.
Starting point is 00:30:25 Because Philadelphia, as I told you in June, was my dark horse to win. the World Series. That's right. Oh, yeah. I said the Phillies were my dark horse. And I'm a casual in baseball, but that's my dark horse to win. Unfortunately, they have to go through Atlanta, so that's probably not going to be a good ending.
Starting point is 00:30:40 But that will be a fascinating series. Yeah. I'm trying to think like when you see the postseason home runs and the reaction, it's pretty awesome. Visually that Philly moment was great. Would you rather hit a grand slam in the baseball playoffs in October or catch like the game-winning touchdown? Oh, hit a grand slam.
Starting point is 00:30:58 football game. Oh. I mean, it doesn't have to be Dwight Clark or the Minnesota. A grand slam in postseason baseball. I didn't say World Series. To win the game. Wow, to win the game. That's great.
Starting point is 00:31:10 Just a grand slam in a game. Or the game winning touchdown in an NFL playoff. Why does football get the game winning? Touchdowns happen all the time. Grand slams do not happen all the time. Well, I would take the game winning touchdown over the grand slam. But bottom of the ninth grand slam to win a game seven. to win a game seven in baseball?
Starting point is 00:31:29 I feel like baseball stadiums are louder than football. Well, I think it's just, you, I mean, I can't name a touchdown catch at the end to win a football game. There's so many. How many grand slams have ever won a game seven? I mean, some baseball seamhead knows. That, to me, feels like historic. Actually, I should take that back. So far this weekend when the Eagles come to town, it's going to be very loud.
Starting point is 00:31:50 Matt Stafford's going to have to go on the silent count, probably, when he's on offense against the Eagles fans. It's going to be like 65 to 70 percent Eagles fans. this weekend. That's so far. That's okay. Stan Cronky still gets... Are you taking the Rams? Sounds like Cooper Cubs not playing. I'm not taking the Rams. For the record, the larger U.S. market won all four baseball series,
Starting point is 00:32:11 and this is why it's important. So Toronto's not good for TV networks. Doesn't count on the ratings. So, you know, we at Fox, we got Minnesota. Tampa, nobody goes to their games in Tampa. So we got the Texas State. We also got, you know, like Dallas,
Starting point is 00:32:26 market. Arizona over Milwaukee, kind of a push there. Philadelphia over Miami. Philadelphia is a much greater TV market and sports passion market. So I will say, what's the best world series here? Dodgers, Astros? Well, the Braves are the best team in baseball. I don't know. I think the brave. I'm rooting Dodgers, obviously. Where are the Yankees on there, by the way? They're not. They didn't make the playoff. Yeah, I know. I know. You're the Red Sox. Just upset. I'm just saying it wasn't a bad night for TV networks in baseball. Ray's lost a Canadian team lost Marlins
Starting point is 00:33:02 can't fill a stadium loss You love to talk about 70 sports Should we have a contest where we do like Minnesota Twins baseball players From the 80s I think I could compete with you on that one Where it's just like we go one back and forth Yeah listen
Starting point is 00:33:12 Can I go first? I look at it as a strength That I can add layers And contextualization to stuff You mock me because I can name the Denver Nuggets 1981 starting fine Wow
Starting point is 00:33:23 All right Nobody knows Dan Isle, in fact, I know Kent Herbeck. Kirby Bucket. Tom Brunansky. John, Tom, Morris, Jack Morris was on the mound. Greg Gagne was. Gregny.
Starting point is 00:33:36 Gagney was on that team. I'm thinking of my baseball cards when I was a kid. I had so many good baseball cards. Dan Gladden. Oh, that's a good one. I like that. I don't know if he was that good, but I have a million. I'll take you one better.
Starting point is 00:33:46 Rod Caroo, Larry Heisle. Roy Smalley. The late Lyman boss. I'm out. You want to go 70s Twins batting order? No, I do. My Mariners couldn't get them out. J. Mack with the news.
Starting point is 00:34:00 Well, that's the news. And thanks for stopping by. The Herd Lie News. That's interesting. Another Russell Wilson story. It is interesting, right? Nathaniel Hackett goes to Denver where he used to coach for like an hour. Some thoughts on that.
Starting point is 00:34:20 Marshawn Lynch talking about Russell Wilson. It's interesting, though. It's interesting. Be sure to catch live editions of The Herd. weekdays in noon Eastern 9 a.m. Pacific on Fox Sports Radio, FS1 and the IHeart Radio app. Hey, this is Tom Verducci from Fox Sports, MLB Network and Sports Illustrated. And I'm Joe Madden, and we're going to be around to talk a little bit about managerial decisions and what may have occurred into the dugout, maybe in the 1980s.
Starting point is 00:34:45 It's the Book of Joe podcast. I can't wait for this, Joe. We're going to dive into what goes in the dugout and behind the scenes in Major League Baseball. Cars, whined, whatever else we want to talk about. Yeah, well, there are no boundaries. right? Listen to the Booker Joe podcast on the IHeart radio app on Apple Podcasts or wherever you get your podcasts. Imagine an Olympics where doping is not only legal but encouraged. It's the enhanced games. Some call it grotesque. Others say it's unleashing human potential. Either way, the podcast's superhuman documented it all, embedded in the games and with the athletes for a full year. Within probably 10 days, I'd put on 10 pounds. I was having trouble stopping the muscle growth.
Starting point is 00:35:26 Listen to Superhuman on the IHard Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. A win is a win. A win is a win. I don't care what you're saying. Yep, that's me, Cliver Taylor the 4th. You might have seen the skits, the reactions, my journey from basketball to college football, or my career in sports media. Well, somewhere along the way, this platform became bigger than I ever imagined. And now I'm bringing all of that excitement to my brand new podcast, The Clifford Show.
Starting point is 00:35:54 This is a place for raw, unfiltered conversations with some of your favorite athletes, creators, and voices that not only deserve to be heard, but celebrated. One week, I'll take you behind the scenes of the biggest moments in sports and entertainment, and the next we'll talk about life, mental health, purpose, and even music. The Clivert Show isn't just a podcast. It's a space for honest conversations, stories that don't always get told, and for people who are chasing something bigger. So, if you've ever supported me or you're just chasing down a dream,
Starting point is 00:36:22 this is right where you need to be.
Starting point is 00:36:42 I know what you're thinking. What the hell does George Bush got to do with Little Kim? Well, you can find out on the Look Back at it podcast. I'm Sam Jett. And I'm Alex English. Each episode, we pick it here, unpack what went down, and try to make sense of how we survived it. Including a recent episode with Mark Lamont Hill, waxing all about crack in the 80s. To be clear, 84 is big to me, not just because of crack.
Starting point is 00:37:06 I'm down to talk about crack on day, but just so y'all know. I mean, at this point, Mark, this is the second episode where we've discussed crack, so I'm starting to see that there's a through line. We also have AIDS on the table right now, so. They're finishing that sentence. I don't think there's a more important year for black people. Really? Yeah.
Starting point is 00:37:25 For me, it's one of the most important years for black people in American history. Listen to look back at it on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Sunday, catch the giants as they try and slow down to a Tyreek and the Dolphins or the Panthers. Or the Panthers take on Jared Gough and the Lions or other regional action. Check for the game in your area Sunday on Fox and the Fox Sports app. Pretty interesting lineup. Rams Eagles is very interesting. Cooper Cup is back at practice.
Starting point is 00:37:57 Well, we don't. Well, not a guarantee that he's going to play in. By the way, Stafford, not 100%. Eagle's defensive line versus the Rams offensive line. Be careful here, Cowherd. I see what you're stepping into. No, I already picked my side. I have a big pile of poop on the sidewalk, and I'm like, Colin, avoid that poop.
Starting point is 00:38:14 Don't step in it. Seven of the last 10 picks. Boom. Shackalaga. Boom. Okay. So for years, when I defended Russell Wilson in Seattle, people were always like, yeah, give me a break.
Starting point is 00:38:30 It's the defense. It's Pete Carroll. It's the run game. And I was always like, well, no, I mean, Pete Carroll was 7 to 9, 7 to 9. Russell showed up and they won a bunch of games. But the one thing I've never been able to really defend Russell Wilson with is he is a star quarterback and doesn't have a bunch of guys that defend him. Right?
Starting point is 00:38:47 Like, who are his guys? Peyton Manning at his guys. Brady at his guys. Mahomes is loved in that locker room. Joe Burrow is loved. Justin Herbert is loved. Trevor Lawrence, he's got his guys. They got his back. Russell really doesn't.
Starting point is 00:39:03 Here's the latest former teammate to have an opinion that's negative Marshawn Lynch on Russell Wilson. This was his go-to running back, his bell cow. Being accountable was something big for us in Seattle. We had a practice in Pete. wasn't holding Russ accountable. Pete told us, hey, nobody go and talk to Russell. If anybody's got something to say to Russell, come talk to me. Said Marshawn, you're putting him on a pedestal.
Starting point is 00:39:28 You don't have to be accountable to the same blank we do. What the blank is that? Now, I honestly do think that's odd, but I don't really have a frame of reference here. I don't have enough information to know why that happened or the situation. But I will say this. Aaron Rogers, and I think what I'm about to say is really fair. Aaron Rogers can be a little prickly, passive aggressive, difficult. But man, he's got David Boktiari and Jordy Nelson and Randall Cobb and James Jones,
Starting point is 00:40:02 and he's had a lot of great players. A.J. Hawk, they got Aaron's back. They are Aaron's dudes. They are there to defend. I've had them text me if I'm critical of Aaron. I've had that come on the show and defend Aaron with me when they think I'm too hard on Aaron. And so I've come to believe with Aaron Rogers. And again, I think this is fair.
Starting point is 00:40:23 I think Aaron and the media sometimes I don't think understands this. Aaron bristles at authority. Vaccine mandates. Don't sit well with Aaron. General managers who have too much power. If you read the Jeff Perlman book, he poked at Brett Farb, who was America's eye. at quarterback. Cultural norms.
Starting point is 00:40:50 Aaron bristles, even with his parents on religion, Aaron bristles at authority, which, honestly, kind of like. I disagreed with him on the vaccine stuff, but if you're against the vaccines because you bristle at authority,
Starting point is 00:41:09 you and I are actually on the same team. Aaron may be prickly. Aaron's got dudes. Peyton Manning had dudes. Mahomes has dudes. Brady had dudes. Russell doesn't. Name them.
Starting point is 00:41:22 Name the guys that publicly defend him. It's weird. I don't have, especially in the NFL offense in particular, everybody's dependent on somebody else. Quarterbacks dependent on a left tackle and everybody knowing the plays. So for Marshawn Lynch to go after Russell and defend the defense, the guy's hitting him in practice. is something. And I don't really have an answer for it. I like Russ. I think he's really,
Starting point is 00:41:48 really talented. I think in his prime, he was very unique. I think he got Kyler Murray drafted number one. I think he got Johnny Mansell and Baker Mayfield. I think Russell Wilson got a lot of guys paid. He was undersized, ran around a lot, not your perfect prototypical pocket quarterback. He got a lot of dudes paid. He got paid himself. And that contract starts next year and goes for five. And he's going to be richer than me ever and almost anybody I've ever met. But that's the one thing with Ross. I don't know how to reconcile it. I don't know how.
Starting point is 00:42:17 Like all these quarterbacks have their guys. He doesn't. I don't know how to explain it. Another story this weekend, the Jets go to Denver. I like the Jets in this game. Nathaniel Hackett returns to Denver. That's the headline today. Now I'm going to talk about Aaron in a different light.
Starting point is 00:42:35 So Aaron Rogers loves Nathaniel Hackett. Aaron likes a lot of guys. Right? like Aaron likes guys that, you know, maybe agree with him or his guys. Like he, he, he, but Nathaniel Hackett has become, in my opinion, Adam Gace. One legendary quarterback kind of out of his prime vouches for him. Peyton Manning vouch for Adam Gase. That's why I liked Adam Gase.
Starting point is 00:42:59 I was like, well, Peyton Manning's one of the smartest people to ever play the game. I like him. And by the way, Josh McDaniels. Brady vouches for him. He struggles his head coach. Sometimes quarterbacks get old. older and they get into habits and they vouch for guys who kind of let them do what they want to do. It's not a criticism.
Starting point is 00:43:19 But I think Tom, Peyton, Aaron, you kind of vouch for guys who you're comfortable with. I've done that more than once in my life. But let's not pretend like Nathaniel Hackett works. So let's just take example A. Russell last year with Nathaniel Hackett and Russell this year through a. month with Sean Payton. Brough, it's not close. Russell is a significantly better quarterback across the board.
Starting point is 00:43:49 A passerating from 80s to 106-7. One thing's changed, the coach. So, by the way, a lot of people who are big and successful, Mike Tomlin's vouched for Matt Canada several times. Again, a lot of people vouch for a lot of people. But here's the thing about Nathaniel Hackett. And I got nothing against him. I don't know his dad.
Starting point is 00:44:12 his dad was at USC, didn't work, got whacked. Nathaniel, you know, so I've been critical of both. They obviously know some football. But Nathaniel Hackett, 10 years of being an offensive coordinator or a head coach, 10 years a decade. That's a real sample size. If you're a radio guy, you've been on the air 10 years. I want to see your ratings over 10 years.
Starting point is 00:44:35 I'll take out your best year and your worst year. What are you? You're a realtor. 10 years, realtor. I'll take out your worst year. There was a pandemic. year, you had a friend sell a mansion and you knew the friend. Okay, what are you? Ten years as a head coach or an offensive coordinator. Only two of ten years, Nathaniel Hackett's offenses
Starting point is 00:44:55 have even been in the top half of the league. Those two years were with Aaron Rogers, and it was Matt Lefleur's offense, and Matt Lefleur was calling the plays. So if the Jets win this weekend, I don't want to hear about Nathaniel Hack. It's the Jets defense. If you do something for 10 years, you've had two elite years, and it wasn't even like your real estate sale or your offense, and you weren't calling the plays or signing the papers, I have one conclusion.
Starting point is 00:45:35 That's not it. So all you have to do, go back to the numbers. Russell Wilson with Hackett, Jerry, Judy, Cortland. I mean, they upgraded their right tackle. I mean, the defense is worse, meaning Russell's playing from behind. Russell's trailing, that's a disadvantage. Russell's numbers should not be better this year because he's playing from huge deficits. Last year, the Denver defense was good.
Starting point is 00:46:02 Russell was in low-scoring, boring games, but they were in a lot of games in the third quarter. He's playing from behind outside of the Bears game. And even the Bears game, they were behind at half. So his numbers should not be better. It's harder in this league to play from behind. We did this all the time as a staff. We look at a guy's quarterback rating ahead and behind. It's almost always lower significantly behind.
Starting point is 00:46:25 So this year, Russell's way behind, and his numbers have exploded. So if the Jets win a defense, it's not the coach. The coach proven from one year, Denver, new coach, same quarterback, mostly same weapons. that's not it. All right, Greg CoSell is coming up. If you bet football, you play fantasy football, which people do, or you just want to get smarter in football. One of the things Greg CoSell does that really, I think, benefits us,
Starting point is 00:46:55 he doesn't get too high or low. If a team wins by blowout, he doesn't know what's say the team's good. He'll say, actually, the team they played made a lot of mistakes. He's very good at sort of popping the hype balloon. One note here, the Big Ten football scale. has come out for next year. And a lot of people in the Midwest, well-fed and proud of their region, said that USC would not be able to handle playing in 40-degree weather.
Starting point is 00:47:24 It's cold out here, they said. There's this concern that USC will not be able to handle Big Ten weather, though it should be duly noted they have a winning record against every single Big Ten team they've ever played. Well, the schedule came out next year, and do you know what I saw? Reverse the telescope. Little Penn State in the middle of the season, who will have the best quarterback in the country, has to fly 3,000 miles on a Thursday.
Starting point is 00:47:57 Nebraska in L.A., Penn State in L.A., Wisconsin in L.A. Rutgers in L.A. I mean, you look at USC's road games. Come on, UCLA and Washington are just up the road. Wisconsin, Penn State. Good luck playing in the heat of Southern California, hurrying through the midterm to get on that flight on a Thursday morning or Wednesday night. Distracted by our weather.
Starting point is 00:48:26 Beautiful people in Disneyland. I am predicting a Big Ten championship for USC next year. Set it, tape it, put it on the archives. Hour one down, Greg Kossel next. Another podcast from some SNF. Late Night Comedy Guy, not quite. Unhumor me with Robert Smygel and Friends. Me and hilarious guests from Bob Odenkirk to David Letterman
Starting point is 00:48:49 help make you funnier. This week, my guest, SNL's Mikey Day and head writer, Streeter Seidel, help an a cappella band with their between songs banter. Where does your group perform? We do some retirement homes. Those people are starving for banter. Listen to humor me with Robert Smigel and Friends on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.
Starting point is 00:49:10 Imagine an Olympics where doping is not only legal but encouraged. It's the enhanced games. Some call it grotesque. Others say it's unleashing human potential. Either way, the podcast's Superhuman documented it all, embedded in the games and with the athletes for a full year. Within probably 10 days, I'd put on 10 pounds.
