This is an I-Heart podcast.
Guaranteed Human.
Another podcast from some SNL, late-night comedy guy, not quite.
Unhumor me with Robert Smygel and friends.
Me and hilarious guests from Bob Odenkirk to David Letterman
help make you funnier.
This week, my guest, SNL's Mikey Day and head writer, Streeter Seidel,
help an a cappella band with their between songs banter.
Where does your group perform?
We do some retirement homes.
Those people are starving for banter.
Listen to humor me with Robert Smigel
and friends on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.
Imagine an Olympics where doping is not only legal, but encouraged.
It's the enhanced games.
Some call it grotesque.
Others say it's unleashing human potential.
Either way, the podcast's Superhuman documented it all, embedded in the games and with the athletes
for a full year.
Within probably 10 days, I'd put on 10 pounds.
I was having trouble stopping the muscle growth.
Listen to Superhuman on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.
On the Look Back at it podcast.
From 1979, that was a big moment for me.
84 was big to me.
I'm Sam J.
And I'm Alex English.
Each episode, we pick a year, unpack what went down, and try to make sense of how we survived it.
With our friends, fellow comedians, and favorite authors.
Like Mark Lamont Hill on the 80s.
84 was a wild year.
It was a wild year.
I don't think there's a more important year for black people.
Listen to look back at it on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.

Thanks for making us part of your day.
Jay Mack and I, Joel Clatt, one hour from now,
Colorado going to keep it close against USC.
Do we have an upset potentially in the making?
Well, Joel Clatt, David Spade,
comedian stops by J-MAC, Good Night Sleep, did a little streaming viewing last night, gave sports the night off, and I am rolling, ready to go to now.
David Spade's going to be here. You didn't tell me? I could have dressed up a little bit. I know my wife. She was, you know, she didn't listen to my show. She's like, well, why don't you tell me that? I said, I did. He's coming on third hour. She's that, she'll listen to my show.
Oh, he's got some great. I've seen him live. He is tremendous. I've seen him live three times. He's been great at all three. So let me start with this.
I saw a quote yesterday. Deon Sanders said, Colorado is playing against all of college football.
Oh, come on. I like Colorado and Dion. Come on. That's nonsense.
TV networks, I hear this so far this season. You guys are over-hyping Deon.
You're over-promoting Deon. No or not. We're appropriately promoting him. How do I know that?
Because the ratings are great. I've worked at TV networks, TV stations.
for 30 years.
They hype everything.
They market everything.
They promote everything.
When it doesn't get ratings, that's overhyped.
When it does get ratings, and Colorado is smashing ratings, beating Texas Bama.
You've got to be kidding me.
Then it's appropriately hyped.
NFL fans, a lot of them, believe it or not, don't like college football.
They think it's JV.
Many of them are pouring into college football.
Sunday viewers only.
are now watching Saturday football.
Dion isn't overhyped.
I heard this for years when I was a young sportscaster.
I was in Portland at the time,
and Tiger Woods was wildly popular,
and networks were like showing every shot.
And the old heads would come up to me,
hey, guys, overhive, show other golfers.
Nobody cared about them.
Golf didn't get ratings until Jack arrived and Tiger arrived.
Tiger wasn't overviewed, overpromoted.
He was appropriately.
He moved product.
he was appropriately promoted.
What is over-discussed, what is over-reported,
is this nonsense that a lot of people hate Dion Sanders for a lot of reasons.
He's very divisive.
No, he's not.
He's fun.
Newsflash.
90% of college football hates Ohio State, hates Bama, hates Notre Dame,
hates the SEC, hates Harbaugh.
That's because college football is tribal.
and highly regional.
It's the only sport now that has 20 rivalries that get me to a TV set.
NBA didn't have any rivalries, Celtics, Lakers, please.
It's all about the stars.
NBA didn't have any rivalries.
NFL really has a couple Rams, Niners, but the Niners seem to always win that.
Raven Steelers, but I don't really care.
It's Burrell Lamar Jackson and I want to watch.
I want to watch players, not rivalries in pro sports.
College sports is about rivalries.
Everybody hates everybody that's not theirs.
Duke basketball.
Totally divisive.
Kentucky basketball.
John Calipari, Jim Harbaugh, totally divisive.
Everybody that's new is divisive in college football.
All the top teams, all the top brands, all the top coaches.
Another thing.
If you work in TV, you know this.
College football has got a much older fan base than, say, the NBA.
NBA fans are younger.
They love new stuff.
They love new stuff.
College football's got an older fan base.
than the NFL. They hate everything that's new.
Conference realignment.
It's going to kill the sport.
Really? You don't think USC, Ohio State, UCLA, Michigan, Oregon, Washington against Ohio State.
Penn State's going to be great.
They told us conference realignment was going to kill the sport, all the old heads.
They hate the NIL.
They hate the transfer portal.
They didn't like Jim Harbaugh.
College football fans, Alabama's proud they wear numbers on helmets.
Penn State's proud.
They wear generic football uniforms.
That's college football.
It's all rooted in tradition.
And Dion is fun.
He's new.
He's flashy.
He's wearing the shades in the cowboy hat.
It's fantastic.
But this idea, the whole nation's rooting against Dion,
Dion's always been polarizing.
He was polarizing as a player.
I watched him.
I'm old enough to remember when he played at Florida State.
This isn't a new thing with him.
And it's not a new thing with college football.
football. Everybody that's not in the SEC and the South hates the SEC. Why? Because the sports
tribal. Harbaugh has gotten more heat as a great coach than any coach I've ever seen. He's quirky.
He leads with his chin. And Dion does a little bit. He puts it out there. But college football,
they don't like anything new. Harbaugh, stay in the NFL. Deon, you don't know what you're doing.
Well, he won at Jackson State and he won at Colorado. See him's
pretty good to me. And we didn't talk about either before. Here's prime time talking about the state
of the buffs and himself. Deion, the first time I saw you is at Clemson Death Valley back in the day.
Yeah. And people were booing you. Your whole life, you've been divisive. People who really love you.
What came out to the wound? I was booed. Right. What's your message to them? And then what do you
I don't have a message to detractors or haters? I don't have a message. I don't take my time to
respond and to defend myself. Why would I do that? I'm giving you a microphone if I'm doing. I'm
doing it. I'm giving you solace that you're in my life. I don't care. I really don't.
I'm not new to this. I'm true to this.
So Dion has been polarizing day one, and college football is the most petty, regional, hate-filled
sport there is. And some of that, some of that is fun. Ohio State, Michigan, Alabama,
Auburn, Texas, Oklahoma. The idea that Dion's in the sport.
And everybody's rooting against him.
No, they're not.
I watch Colorado every weekend.
I'll watch every second of this game.
I watched every second of last game.
I watched every second of the TCU game.
I did turn the Nebraska game off in the fourth quarter.
Nebraska was painful to watch.
But this is college football.
And it's great and it's wonderful.
And there's rivalries.
And it's tribal and it's regional.
And it's kooky.
And fans are delusional.
Dion is great for the sport.
This isn't new.
College football, I mean, it's insane how much everybody hates anybody that didn't go to their school.
And it's probably one of the great gems of the sport.
Rivalries exist for that very reason.
Dion's great.
He's going nowhere.
And now I want to talk something that's not great, the New York Jets.
So Aaron Rogers, quote, our offense needs to grow up and not point fingers.
So there's a lot of finger pointing at Zach Wilson from the offense, fighting on the sidelines.
And Aaron says, guys grow up.
Aaron is trying to be a leader here.
That I appreciate.
It is, however, very hard to be a leader from the rehab facility.
You don't have any sweat equity with the franchise.
You're not on the field.
So you're trying to be a leader.
Those Super Bowls weren't with these guys.
Didn't build them with these guys.
Didn't win with these guys.
So those players, as great as you are, you're rehabbing.
They're playing on Sunday.
So I think what's happened is Aaron's trying to defend somebody.
He's trying here, and I appreciate the effort that's not really defendable.
Zach Wilson's a bad, cocky, disconnected quarterback that doesn't work.
And the offense isn't the only group that's not happy with him.
A story this morning, Rich Samini, ESPN, reputable reporter, says Robert Salas, Zach Wilson's support, has the defense not happy.
So those defenders for the Jets, they're on the field.
Again, three and out, again, sacrificing their bodies.
Again, the scoring offense for the Jets with Zach Wilson, worst.
Total offense, worst.
Third down offense, worst.
And they're sacrificing their careers in their bodies.
The defense should be mad.
So do you see what's happening here?
Sala and Aaron Rogers are trying to be leaders and they're taking one for the team by supporting
Zach Wilson.
And the team doesn't want to hear it because the team's on the field and sees the truth.
So Aaron Rogers, let's be honest, they're saying, dude, you're not here.
You're not on the field.
You're rehabbing.
We love you, but you're rehabbing.
And Robert Salah, they're saying,
dude, you've been supporting this guy for two years.
There's a reason you went and got Aaron Rogers.
He can't play.
So the Jets boat is taking water.
Sala and Aaron have buckets in her bailing,
and the rest of the team saying, let's just get a new boat.
This is not working.
So I appreciate the effort.
But I'll say this.
I'm not going to blame Aaron because he's trying to be a leader.
And I'm not going to blame Sala because he didn't draft him.
But one of the reasons,
I was not a huge
Zach Wilson guy, and I don't want to pick on the kid.
But you can see leadership very quickly.
Brock Purdy, first month in the facility.
All you heard, what a leader.
How about the kid down in Houston, C.J. Stroud.
He's three games into his career.
Go read the quotes online.
Everybody's like, adult, professional.
What a leader.
Leader jumps out in camp.
It jumps out in meeting rooms.
It jumps out at practice.
Jets didn't do their homework on Zach Wilson, and Sala and Aaron Rogers are taking the fall.
BYU, his last year at college, named eight captains.
The star quarterback wasn't one of them.
They put him on a quote, leadership council, eye roll.
The bottom line here is Robert Sala and Aaron Rogers are taken one for the team, but mostly taken one for the GM.
They didn't do their homework.
they fell in love with a couple throws at the combine.
Zach Wilson against Utah and Washington in college wasn't very good.
He mopped up in the COVID year when they had their weakest schedule.
Didn't name him a team captain.
The headband came from some wealth.
This thing was never going to work in New York.
Hey, GMs make mistakes.
Some of my favorite GMs in this league,
Howie Roseman's made mistakes.
Looks like Tom Talasco with the Jargers,
that cornerback from New England's not working.
It happens.
It's in exact.
It's not science.
But Aaron and Sala are trying to be leaders, and they're taking one.
For the GM.
C.J. Stroud, a leader right out of the gate.
Brock Purdy, leader right out of the gate.
We're two years in here.
The defense doesn't like Zach.
The offense doesn't like him.
Aaron's trying.
I'll give him credit.
Nick Wright's talked about the question.
quarterback mess in New York.
On the flip side in New York, yes, the Rogers thing was incredibly unfortunate.
But the reason you can't come back from it is because every part of your offseason
was about signing Aaron Rogers and then signing his friends and family.
There was an element of, you know what, this is either going to work beautifully or it's just
going to be such a disaster, everyone gets fired, that I didn't think it had to be.
It's puzzling to me that they did not add a quarterback the moment he got hurt.
Now they have finally done it with Simeon who instantly becomes the best quarterback on the team,
but he can't play this weekend against the Chiefs.
And by the time he does play, the season's probably over.
J-Mack getting very sensitive with this.
But we do put it out there more than most shows.
Draft, games, we put it out there.
We don't care if we get ripped.
I didn't like Zach Wilson.
I talked about the hero ball.
He came from a lot of money.
disconnected at BYU, not a team captain.
And I think Sala and Aaron are actually saying, hey, we're going to take it.
But the players aren't buying it at all.
I don't know.
I don't like the word sensitive.
But yes, it's been tough on me the last couple weeks.
I will say this.
I do know a couple people around the Jets.
I've texted them and I've got radio silence.
So historically in the last couple years, they've told me what's going on in the locker room.
I don't have a good vibe.
Something's happening right now behind the scenes.
I don't know what it is.
guess and my prayer would be that they're going after Kirk Cousins. I know you don't want to hear
that, but that's the only way that guys are going to save their jobs here. Well, I'll remind you,
Island Games Sunday night against the Chiefs, if they hang 40 on this defense and the Jets get boat
raced, you know, Sala can start putting his house on the market. It's over. Well, timeout.
No. A defense can be great, Pittsburgh, Kansas City, Jets, but you're seeing this. I don't think
Chicago's defense is good.
But when a defense is discouraged and on the feel a lot, so the key will be this, the Patriots
aren't scoring a lot either, but the defense plays their butt off because they trust Belichick.
I don't think they like Mac Jones much, but they trust Belichick.
If the chiefs light up the Jets defense, they shouldn't.
They should score 26 or 24.
If they light it up what it's telling you then, now you're in a situation where you may have to get
Kirk Couss.
I mean, listen, Dallas ran the ball successfully.
Patriots ran the ball.
They moved the ball.
The Patriots did they just flubbed it in the red zone.
Jets defense has been bending a little, and if you want to blame it on the offense, I'll totally accept it.
That's what I'm saying.
That's what I'm saying.
I think the Jets defense is great.
But when you're on the field, like Pittsburgh is winning.
If Pittsburgh would have lost the last two weeks with that offensive performance,
some of that is, I've heard this for years from defensive players.
When you have a star quarterback, you play harder late in games.
If you're down, you know, just get Mahomes the ball.
Herbert the ball.
In Michael Vicks Prime, Atlanta players, get Mike the ball, get Lamar the ball, get Josh
the ball.
If it's hopeless and you're on the field for the 13th series, it's the fourth straight,
three and out.
Defense is about effort.
Guys don't play as hard.
By the way, Zach Wilson had three chances in the fourth quarter.
Three with the ball.
One of them took a safety, the other they had no chance.
And it's where we are.

Do you remember when Diana Ross double-taped little
Little Kim's boobs at the VMAs?
Or when Kanye said that George Bush didn't like black people.
I know what you're thinking.
What the hell does George Bush got to do with Little Kim?
Well, you can find out on the Look Back at it podcast.

To be clear, 84 is big to me, not just because of crack.
I'm down to talk about crack.
But just so y'all know.
I mean, at this point, this is the second episode where we've discussed correct.
So I'm starting to see that there's a through line.
We also have AIDS on the table right now.
Thank you finishing that sentence.
I don't think there's a more important year for black people.
Really?
Yeah.
For me, it's one of the most important years for black people in American history.

Mercedes gone now big with electric.
So this weekend, one of the more interesting games is, is Miami for real?
Uh-oh, here comes Buffalo.
Now, Buffalo's dominated this division for several years, but Miami's got something going
for them that we see in sports more that you think.
They are ahead of the curve.
So Sean McDermott, defensive coach for Buffalo, said this week, he used the word
revolutionary when he talked about him.
The dolphins are revolutionary.
That's a big word revolutionary, but it happens more than you think in sports.
The three ball, Golden State was about four years ahead of the curve.
So what happens in sports, let's talk football, though, new offensive wrinkles are created
and defense gets caught flat-footed.
And because the season, you're on a treadmill, you have to get to an off-season to kind of
break it down and figure it out.
You don't have time in a season.
So defenses eventually catch up to some degree.
but right now they're not caught up to Miami.
So half the NFL now, almost half, uses San Francisco's Kyle Shanahan's offense.
But he was ahead of the curve for a couple of years, and that got Jimmy Garoppolo to a Super Bowl.
The dolphins right now lead the NFL.
83% of their plays are in motion.
The only one close to San Francisco.
So Mike McDaniel has taken San Francisco, added jet fuel slash HGH to it,
and the league's going to get going to get.
get buried with it, a lot, unless you're New England, Belichick, or maybe the top defenses.
So I was told this morning, even Bob Dylan eventually went to an electric guitar, right?
Like, at some point, the league will copy it or figure it out.
But you can copy Shanahan.
He still blows people out a lot.
You can copy Mike McDaniel.
They're going to blow people out a lot.
People tried to copy Belichick for 20 years and couldn't stop him.
Why?
The secret sauce.
Brady.
What is the secret sauce with Miami?
speed. Tyreek Hill, Rahim Moster, Jalen Waddle are world-class speed guys. So Miami is created
an offense. The league hasn't. They'll need an offseason to catch up with. They added speed
elements and the league just, they're going to humiliate a lot of teams. Not all the teams,
not a Belichick, not probably Buffalo, but they're going to humiliate half the teams they play.
Same with San Francisco. San Francisco. San Francisco,
roll people for several years.
Now, they still occasionally roll people.
What is their secret sauce?
Kiddell, Christian McCaffrey, Debo, after the catch.
That offense in San Francisco is rooted in power.
Miami takes that.
Theirs is rooted in speed.
What was New England's rooted in?
Efficiency, intelligence with Brady pre-snap.
So every offense, when it's new, has a little secret sauce to it.
So Miami is going to roll people.
and being first matters.
Warriors got a lot of titles.
Netflix is making a lot of money in streaming,
and Tesla's the EV leader.
It doesn't mean you end up number one,
but it is a huge advantage.
It got San Francisco to a Super Bowl with Garapolo.
I think this could get Miami to a Super Bowl with Tua.
Doesn't mean you'll win the Super Bowl.
But being first matters,
and this is the second year in the system,
and they've added an element motion
that I think everybody's a little flat-footed.
Mark Sanchez talked about it earlier this week.
He's not reinventing the wheel.
Their head coach, right?
He's second year of the system.
Offenses grow over time.
They evolve.
It's not like the static words and lines on a page
and a book that just sits there and gathers dust in the offseason.
Pages come in, pages go out.
You know, you evolve.
And if you keep those players and attributes together over time,
like Kansas City, you keep that core group together, things start to go off script.
You add a couple motions. You add a little tweak here.
So I think the key is McDaniel had a vision, got the personnel for the vision speed,
and now year two it's exploding.
Kyle Shanahan had a power vision, got the right personnel.
Year three, it exploded.
About the time it took Belichick and Brady,
to really connect.
So I think right now Miami's a little ahead of the league.
I mean, good God, the Wildcat work for about a season.
The element of surprise, the element of different.
The NFL is a copycat league.
It is hard when somebody introduces something to the league to catch up quickly.
Off seasons is when you catch up.
I mean, Tebow was effective for a while.
Seven games, but he was effective.
It was new.
J-MAC with the news.
No, no, no, no.
Turn on the news.
This is the.
Heard line news.
I just can't get over the excitement of what Miami is going to do with Tua at quarterback.
Like that is, like it looks like they're set up for success like the Warriors, right?
What do you have to do when you have to pay Tua?
What if Tua steps up and says, hey, Giants gave Daniel Jones 40 million a year.
I got to get more than that guy.
But I contend Tua's different.
So Mahomes, team friendly deal.
Eventually then said, we're just going to redo it regularly to get me paid if I win Super Bowls.
Herbert, team friendly deal.
I think Tua, because he got crapped on early,
good kid. I think Tua would take a team-friendly deal a little shorter in length, but good money.
And then if he wins a Super Bowl, you redo it and give him more. I think Tua will work very well.
I think he understands how much Mike McDaniel means to him. I think Herbert understands what
Keenan Allen has meant to him, his left tackle, slate, right? So the idea in the NFL, NBA is
different. NBA guys want their money. But I think NFL, young star quarterbacks, Tua Herbert
Mahomes are like, you know what?
I'm going to, I think Tua, I'm not going to say it's going to be a lobsided contract,
but Tua's personality tells me he would be willing to do a contract like Mahomes or Herbert
that feels like the team can still make moves.
Okay, but even after Mahomes did his deal, they had to get off Tyreek Hill.
Like they've got, I mean, it didn't hurt them at all.
Well, they want a Super Bowl.
Kansas City Chiefs and Andy Reed and Mahomes.
Like, do we think Tua's, by the way, what are they?
Who wins the MVP this year? Is he doing team friendly?
They didn't get off Travis Kelsey.
They didn't, but they had to make choices.
So with Tua, you'll have to make choices.
They'll probably get off eventually a Jalen Waddle.
They're not going to get off Tyree Kill.
So if you do a team friendly deal,
you just have to make choices.
If you do a quarterback friendly deal,
sometimes you have to start over on the O line.
And I think Tua is smart enough.
Mahalms, Herbert.
I think Jalen hurt similarly.
They paid Jalen early.
It's like, Jalen, we want to keep Lane Johnson.
We want to keep Cal.
And I think quarterbacks, I think these guys are smart.
They're making a lot more money now on social and endorsements than they did 20 years ago in this league.
You referenced the 49ers.
They went to the Super Bowl with Garapolo.
And I'm not 100% certain I should look it up.
But I think the following draft, they traded up for Tray Lance to get a quarterback on a rookie deal.
They didn't want to pay Garoppolo.
Right.
So they made choices.
Their choice was to get rid of the quarterback.
Let's keep an eye on McDaniel, Tua, and this upcoming draft.
I just don't think that.
They're going to have the success they're having now.
I mean, they got Ramsey.
They got Chubb.
Like you said, Waddle.
Like, they got a lot of guys.
I think drafting a quarterback for them would be smart, but I wouldn't do it in the first two picks.
I do it in the third or fourth round.
And then one more question.
So we asked, what's Daniel Jones's market?
If the Giants said, go test the market and see what you can get.
We said nobody's going after him.
Daniel Jones.
Are people going after Tua?
Yes.
Absolutely.
Yes.
Tua is the Drew Brees comp sounded.
silly, but he is a lot of Drew Brees, which is you're going to stay in the pocket,
little smaller than you like, not a power arm, intelligence, line of scrimmage,
get it out, coachability, through the roof.
Two has got a market.
I know the concussion scare people, but two has got a market.
Daniel Jones does not.
I would say, I would agree he's got more of a market than Jones, but...
I'm not saying he's got...
I'm not saying he'd have...
A lot of his success, man, is Mike and Dave's off.
Well, yes, but you know what?
Let me just say this.
a lot of Joe Montana's success was Bill Walsh.
He didn't win Super Bowls in Kansas City.
A lot of Aikman's success was Jimmy Johnson
and Jimmy Johnson's moved to trade Hershal Walker
and surrounded with nine pro bowlers.
Dan Marino, Don Shula.
Find me the quarterback successful that has a bum as a coach.
It's never happened.
Brady acknowledges it.
Brady never had to win shootouts for 90% of his career.
He never had to win shootouts.
If he scored 27, they won.
He did go to Tampa.
All right, let's move on.
Denver Broncos, 0 and 3 in the Sean Peyton era, despite the winless start,
the Peyton Russell Wilson relationship has been going well with Diana Rusini giving more
context, saying to me, this is one of those developing relationships that's going into a
positive space and it really has been. I wasn't too sure how it was going to work when that
pairing came together initially, knowing both those personalities are strong and unique in their
own way. But from just having a lot of conversations with the players and people in the front
office talking to Peyton, Russell and Sean are getting along really well.
All right. Well, if they're 0 and 4, I think I'll revisit that, but I would hope that's true.
Russell tends to be very optimistic, and he's somebody that can take losses and criticism, okay?
I think that's just Russell's personality. He can deflect stuff. He doesn't take stuff personal.
Like, I just think Russell's the kind of guy that could take criticism. I mean, he's had to.
How much blame does Russell Wilson's shoulder for the 0-3 start?
Well, as I said yesterday, he's the number one salary.
He's the star.
You gave up draft capital.
Whether it's fair or not, the defense is not going to be, they're going to keep getting
rid of defensive money outside of Patrick Sartan.
They're going to start shedding players here.
This organization is about the quarterback and Sean.
Sean Payton was hired for one reason to save Russell Wilson.
And he's doing that.
He has elevated him.
He hasn't saved him.
He's elevated it.
I knew you would say that, so I pulled up some stats.
You know, some guys on social media are saying
Russ has the same stats as Mahomes through three games.
And they're very similar.
I'll give Russ credit for this.
His four TD passes under pressure the season,
second in the league to Kirk Cousins.
His deep ball, remember he struggled with it last year.
It's back.
He's graded out as one of the best deep ball throwers in the league.
Three touchdown, seven of 14.
Like, Russ has been good.
Colin?
Well, no, no.
Russ has struggled in second half.
We talked about this two weeks ago.
Numbers are down a little in the second half.
Yeah.
So, Russ has been a lot.
his first half on script offense massively improved.
Best quarterbacks play good after half.
So he's got to clean that up.
I like Denver this weekend against Chicago.
I think when you get humiliated, they'll play well.
And I actually thought there were signs offensively that they do keep doing things.
I like Denver this weekend.
I don't know, Vance Joseph.
I'm surprised he even got back from South Beach after that.
Well, it's, whoa.
Come on.
Colin, 700 yards and 70 points?
There were some videos on Mark Schlerith is breaking down stuff online
It doesn't look the Broncos defense looked like they mailed it in
Like they were just like in june maybe they had the South Beach flu
I don't know but I don't think Russell Wilson's a problem
I'll just wrap it up on that all right next up Justin Fields and the Bears
They're 0 and 3 as well
Despite the winless start Justin Fields
Love's giving comments to the media
He's not ready to throw in the towel on the season says
The Bears can make the playoffs
All we need is want to get this thing going
I don't know if I told you all right, but the Lions started 1 and 6 last year,
and they almost made the playoffs.
So just keep that faith.
Keep going.
And the big pitchers, the third game in the season, you know.
So we got 14 left at least.
So just keep going, keep working.
That's it.
I like Denver this weekend.
I think they back.
You know my rule, if you're humiliated in professional locker,
like the commanders may not beat Philly, they're going to play a division game,
a very competitive game against Philly.
They get eight.
I'll take the commanders. Denver was humiliated.
There's a lot of talent on that roster.
Judy, Sutton.
Defensively, is there?
Sertan, and I like one of their defensive linemen.
Gregory? All right.
No, they have a linebacker.
They're not atrocious.
They were, again, Miami's ahead of the curve and humiliated them.
Watch Denver and Washington play with a great deal of pride and conviction this week.
And I think Denver wins by over 10.
and I think the commanders lose, but eight points in a division rivalry game,
Buffalo can blow a lot of people out.
They have over the last three years with Josh Allen.
This isn't college where if you lose by 40, you just don't have the personnel.
Washington and Denver have really good players.
Quick word on Philly.
So the bills sacked Sam Howell nine times, and the Eagles have as good or better of a defensive front.
Short week.
Division rivalry.
Be careful with you guys, Sam Howell.
I had to look this up.
Technically, Justin Fields is right.
The Bears have not been eliminated from the playoffs yet.
We are three weeks into the season.
So he is on to something there.
But Colin, I just saw this.
They have one sack on the season, the Bears' defense.
They are top 10 in miss tackles.
They are bottom five in pressure rate.
Like, their defense can't do anything.
No, yeah.
And by, yeah.
I know we want to crush fields.
I just don't think it has a lot of talent.
Well, I think Denver's has some talent.
They haven't played well.
They have a new D.C.
I think Iber Fluse is a defensive guy and the defense still stinks.
I don't think I have a lot of talent.
I don't think they've drafted that well.
Final story is Packers Lions Thursday night and Green Bay fans get excited.
The team is optimistic that Aaron Jones and Christian Watson,
who have been dealing with hamstring injuries, are expected to return Thursday night.
That's going to be an actual rare, excellent Thursday night game.
But with the good news comes the bad, Jordan Love's offensive line is hurting.
Elgin Jenkins has a knee injury.
Bakhtiari has a knee injury and right tackle.
Zach Tom, also a knee injury.
So we don't know about the offensive line.
The skill position players are coming back.
If Bakhtiari and Aaron Jones play, they'll be fine.
Bakhtiari is vital.
Do you see the Rams when their left tackle got hurt?
Teams do not have a good backup left tackle.
I bet the Colts this morning.
Colts over Rams.
Anthony Richardson's back.
But anyways, Packers, I'm just.
I don't know how to grade Jordan love at this point.
Is he good?
By the way, that's a guy.
I don't know.
I don't know.
You shouldn't know.
How can you look awful for three quarters and then put together a miracle comeback?
If you're being fair in the media and not a homer in Green Bay.
If you're being fair, you cannot have a strong definitive opinion.
I don't see great.
I don't even see very good.
I see capable and I see a great organization and a good coach.
Right now, you can't have a definitive opinion.
Yeah, how can you?
There's not enough.
I thought his body language, his optimism, the fourth quarter was a really nice moment for him.
But that was a story.
It's not his career.
So Thursday is a must-watch game for me.
I got to figure Jordan Love out.
Let's remember the week prior, he was good for three quarters against Atlanta,
couldn't get a first down in the fourth quarter.
And they lose a 12-point lead.
So I don't know what to make of Jordan Love.
But I'm with you.
I think the Packers are probably the side on Thursday.
This is a good game.
Yeah, I'm going to take Detroit, but I...
Oh, because I don't know who's playing.
You're favorite on the road, one and a half.
I know.
I know.
I just don't know who's playing for Greenway.
By the way, I saw that.
Jared Goff has more rushing touchdowns than Justin Fields.
I don't know how that's possible.
Jeez.
Jay Mack with the news.
Well, that's the news.
And thanks for stopping by.
The Hurd-Lie News.
Joel Clat.
How fired up is he USC Colorado this weekend?
It's going to break rate.
ratings. It'll be the highest rated college football game in Fox history. I mean, I don't even
know what our number is, but it will be gigantic. And I actually think it's going to be competitive.
Be sure to catch live editions of the herd weekdays in noon Eastern 9 a.m. Pacific on Fox Sports

Pauli Fusco here with Tony Fusco. Yo, of course you know us as the host of the number one
rated show in all the sports talk, the Pauley and Tony Fusco show. Yeah. Now the suits at Fox
Sports Radio gave us this air time
because they wanted us to tell you
how great our show is.
Why? Yeah, instead of us doing that,
let us just let our millions of
fans do the talking. Yeah, play the tape.
You don't know crap about sports.
I mean, why am I even on this crap?
Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa. That's the wrong tape.
Wrong tape.
Just forget that. Look, listen to the Paul and Tony

It's the enhanced games.
Some call it grotesque.
Others say it's unleashing human potential.
Either way, the podcast's Superhuman documented it all,
embedded in the games and with the athletes for a full year.

Do you remember when Diana Ross double-tapped Little Kim's boobs at the VMAs?
Or when Kanye said that George Bush didn't like black people.
I know what you're thinking.
What the hell does George Bush got to do with Little Kim?
Well, you can find out on the Look Back at it podcast.
I'm Sam Jay.
And I'm Alex English.
Each episode, we pick it here, unpack what went down, and try to make sense of how we survived it.
Including a recent episode with Mark Lamont Hill, waxing all about crack in the 80s.
To be clear, 84 was big to me, not just because of crows.
crack.
I'm down to talk about crack on day, but just so y'all know.
I mean, at this point, Mark, this is the second episode where we've discussed crack.
So I'm starting to see that there's a through line.
We also have AIDS on the table right now.
Thank you finishing that sentence.
I don't think there's a more important year for black people.
Really?
Yeah.
For me, it's one of the most important years for black people in American history.
Listen to look back at it on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcast.
Sunday, it's a huge doubleheader on Fox.
Starting with the commanders taking on Jalen Hurts and the Eagles or other regional action.
Then in America's game of the week, the Patriots battle Dak Prescott and the Cowboys.
Or Cardinals Diners all on Fox and the Fox Sports app.
A very interested Patriots Cowboys.
Very interesting.
Could very well sneak into the Blazing Five, which had a stellar three one in one week.
Very interested.
You rarely hear me say, go Patriots.
But go Patriots.
So Jerry Jones, obviously Dallas lost.
They got behind.
They were on the road.
They were, in fairness, missing several offensive linemen.
And I do feel like Mike McCarthy was almost protecting DAC.
They probably ran the ball in the second half the more than they should have.
But I thought, again, he knows the numbers on DAC when he throws 35 to 40 times or more.
They're not good.
He was protecting DAC.
Dak didn't have the offensive linemen available.
And I think McCarthy said, I don't want this guy to get hurt.
we're going to take an L.
If we can run our way back in, we will.
But I do think sometimes a coach, you have to view things holistically.
And when you're missing three or four offensive linemen, you don't want your quarterback to get hurt.
You can run the ball more.
So McCarthy does deserve a little credit for that, in my opinion.
But the red zone offense was a mess.
Is that just the O-liner McCarthy?
McCarthy now calls plays, took a lot of heat, and Jerry Jones talked about it.
I think the thing that we need to zero in on is when we get that ball down in there close,
we've got to get touchdowns, and that's probably across the border with these last three ball games.
We've got a long time to go in this season.
We've got a lot of room to really adjust and correct these things.
And so while it is something to note, it's not a long-range concern.
Are you happy with the offensive change in the way it's gone so far?
I want to see more to use the word happy, but let me be real clear.
I think that we're trying to do is really doable.
Number one, we can do it.
Certainly we have the personnel to execute on it.
Thumbs up.
Let's go.
So the red zone is generally all about details, high pressure situations, and execution.
Not exactly Mike McCarthy's believed strengths.
So DAC this year is 27th in the red zone.
Last year under Kellynne Moore, he was first.
Some coaches like Andy Reid are very good in cluttered spaces.
The chargers with Kellynne Moore are now seventh in the red zone.
Last year they were 17th, and they're doing it this year without Austin Echler,
a huge component, a huge element of the red zone offense.
So they're significantly better with Kellyn Moore without probably their most important tool in the red zone.
Austin Eckler. So a lot goes into being a coach, game management, personnel decisions, hiring
staff. I have no idea if Kellynne Moore is good at any of those. But I do think designing and
calling a game, scheming up a quarterback, red zone efficiency and details. That's where I think
Kellan Moore has proven. Dack and now Justin Herbert, he's really good. So the Chargers offense is
noticeably better this year, especially after half. Noticably better and more explosive,
more creative. Despite not getting a fourth down this past week, they've been very good,
fewer mistakes, better in the second half, more efficient. Dallas, not as much, but I'll go back to
this. And I was told this years ago by Jimmy Johnson. He said, a coordinator's job,
And he's told me this recently.
An offensive coordinator wants to score points.
Looks good in his resume.
A defensive coordinator wants sacks.
A special teams coach wants blocked kicks and trick plays.
It's good for their resumes.
That's how they become a head coach.
A head coach wants to win the game.
That's his responsibility.
So in fairness to Mike McCarthy, at least against Arizona, could I make this argument?
Once the offensive line got dinged up,
And once they fell behind and Arizona could pin their ears back in the second half and go after Dak,
McCarthy wanted to protect Dak.
He's like, we're 2 and 0.
Our defense is top 4 or 5, maybe top 3 in the league.
It's a long season.
We don't care about going undefeated.
Love 2.
Not realistic.
This isn't our day.
We're banged up on the O line.
I'm not going to let Dak take shot after shot after shot.
In recent years, he's gotten banged up.
he cannot take another lower body injury.
So I do think McCarthy, some of this was he kind of took one for DAC.
He took one for the team is, I am going to protect DAC.
We're down, we're on the road.
They're getting a little more pressure.
We are running the ball effectively anyway.
They ran for almost a couple hundred yards, right?
Let's just run the ball.
And I think that's what a head coach, his responsibility is.
Coordinators, Kellyn Moore wants to score points, right?
Brandon Staley is trying to win games to keep his job.
That's all Brandon Stey.
That's all head coaches want.
Double use.
People forget.
Coordinators want to be head coaches.
A coordinator makes $800,000 to $1,000 to $1,000 to $12.
Everybody wants to be a position coach wants to be a coordinator.
A coordinator wants to be a head coach.
One guy cares about one thing.
Winning.
Belichick and Josh McDaniels would occasionally have barking seven.
I was told inside those rooms.
Why? Belichick would be like, we're trying to win games.
Josh McDaniel wanted to get a head coach.
Young family wants to make the big money.
So I'll defend McCarthy a little bit.
I don't think he is as good in the red zone, probably as Kellynne Moore.
But head coaches view the world differently.
So how about that defending Mike McCarthy on the bigger picture, O-Lineman down,
I'm not having DAC throw 48 times, three picks, get ripped by the
the media. We're just going to grind it out. We're running the ball. See if we can come back and win.
That's my take. How about the, like, McCarthy just spoke to the media and everybody's saying,
hey, last year you were number one. Number one in the red zone. He goes, yeah, I looked into that.
He's so defensive. Last year, we only got six trips into the red zone in the first three games.
This year, we got 15, so I'll take the 15 trips into the red zone. Period.
Hey. Okay, hold up, hold up. You know, did you forget? Nobody in a Dallas media challenge.
He's challenged him. Hey, you had Cooper Rush at quarterback for games two and three because
Dak was hurt last year. Cooper Rush was your backup quarterback. Of course you're not getting to the
red zone as much. McCarthy is defensive and he's wrong here. He is a conservative
coach in the red zone. Kellamore, he's dialing up some good stuff. You go watch those
Justin Herbert highlights against the Vikings. The best team in the NFL to watch right now is
Miami. Chargers are second. Chargers are up for Niners. Niners are fun. But I mean,
Chargers are a fun watch. Nobody blows a lead or blows a third and nine like the charges do.
Their offense is spectacular.
What are you doing with the Chargers this weekend?
Hosting the Raiders.
We're talking about.
Mike Williams out.
Echler may not play.
Irwin?
Well, here's the issue.
Quentin Johnson, the receiver, is super talented.
But he's not.
There's a playbook.
There's a lot to learn.
He doesn't have Mike Williams' understanding of all the concepts.
And does Herbert trust him yet?
Herbert trust Palmer more.
Way more.
So the bottom line is quarterbacks and receivers is built overwhelmingly on
trust Quentin Johnston's a great talent. Is he there yet? I'm staying away. Hour two. Joel
Klatte next. Another podcast from some SNL late night comedy guy, not quite. Unhumor me with Robert
