Starting point is 00:00:00 This is an I-Heart podcast. Guaranteed Human. Another podcast from some SNL, late-night comedy guy, not quite. Unhumor me with Robert Smygel and friends. Me and hilarious guests from Bob Odenkirk to David Letterman help make you funnier. This week, my guest, SNL's Mikey Day and head writer Streeter Seidel, help an a cappella band with their between songs banter.
Starting point is 00:00:23 Where does your group perform? We do some retirement homes. Those people are starving for banter. Listen to humor me with Robert Smigel and friends on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Imagine an Olympics where doping is not only legal, but encouraged. It's the enhanced games. Some call it grotesque. Others say it's unleashing human potential. Either way, the podcast's superhuman documented it all, embedded in the games and with the athletes for a full year.
Starting point is 00:00:52 Within probably 10 days, I'd put on 10 pounds. I was having trouble stopping the muscle growth. Listen to Superhuman on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. On the Look Back at it podcast. For 1979, that was a big moment for me. 84 was big to me. I'm Sam J. And I'm Alex English. Each episode, we pick a year, unpack what went down, and try to make sense of how we survived it.
Starting point is 00:01:17 With our friends, fellow comedians, and favorite authors. Like Mark Lamont Hill on the 80s. 84 was a wild year. It was a wild year. I don't think there's a more important year for black people. Listen to look back at it on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. A win is a win. A win is a win.
Starting point is 00:01:37 I don't care what I'm saying. Yep, that's me, Clifford Taylor the 4th. You might have seen the skits, my basketball and college football journey, or my career in sports media. Well, now I'm bringing all of that excitement to my brand new podcast, The Clifers Show. This is a place for raw, unfilled conversations with athletes, creators, and voices that not only deserve to be heard, but celebrated. So let's get to it. Listen to the Clifford show on the IHeard Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcast. And for more behind the scenes, follow at Clifford and at TikTok podcast network on TikTok.
Starting point is 00:02:10 Thanks for listening to The Heard podcast. Be sure to catch us live every weekday from 12 to 3 Eastern, 9 to noon Pacific on Fox Sports Radio and FS1. Find your local station for the Heard at Fox Sports Radio.com or stream us live every day on the iHeart radio app by searching Heard. You're listening to Fox Sports Radio. Here we go. It is a Friday. What a week it's been. Close it out strong today. Live in Los Angeles, this is the herd. Wherever you may be and however you may be listening, IHeart Radio, Fox Sports Radio right here, FS1. One hour from now. Blazing 5 off a losing week. Underdog Week in the Blazing 5. Also in 30 minutes, Greg CoSell. We couldn't use Greg CoSell on Thursday. Our NFL meets. sandwich. He's going to be in 30 minutes today. Greg Kossel comes down. If you bet football, if you're fantasy football, or you just love the intricacies of football. He's our NFL meat
Starting point is 00:03:14 sandwich. And Joy Taylor, Miami Heat tonight trying to stave off elimination. How are you? I'm holding out hope. All I have right now is hope. That's right. Isn't a crazy sports week, though? Great. Game last night was amazing. Made steaks, a couple of beers with a buddy, sat up and watched some great baseball playoffs. in the NFL last night. So let's start with Tom Brady. Third down, fourth down, confusion. He's not telling the truth.
Starting point is 00:03:40 Who cares? That's not why they lost. They lost because of 11 penalties and bad pass protection. The bottom line, you do anything long enough. You're married for 30 years, you're going to have more fights. You drive the same car for 20 years. You're going to have more flat tires. You do anything forever.
Starting point is 00:03:57 He's been playing quarterback forever. You're going to have a brain fart. It doesn't happen in Super Bowls. Doesn't happen in conference championships. Doesn't happen in big division rival games. It happened on a short week, Thursday night. He forgot what down it was. This game wasn't about that play.
Starting point is 00:04:10 This was about the Bears defense is built in that moment to stop. You could beat the Bears defense early, but in that moment, you're not beating the Bears defense. They only allow 57% completion percentage, the Bears defense, best in the NFL. They have a great pass rush. That's an ordinary Buccaneer offensive line, and they've allowed four touchdown passes in five games. No quarterbacks thrown for more than one. In that moment, by the time the game got to that, Tampa Bay wasn't winning. They were not going to take the ball 55 yards down the field in the
Starting point is 00:04:43 minute, five seconds, and get a field goal. They weren't. They didn't have O.J. Howard, their best tight end talent. They didn't have Chris Godwin, their second best wide receiver talent. They didn't have Leonard Fernette out of the backfield swing pass. Tampa Bay could have won the game, and I thought they would by a field goal. But by the time it got to that, it didn't matter about the time. Short week on the road, bears humiliation. and that defense is built for that moment. Here's the troubling thing if you're Tampa. Because most of us picked Tampa, myself included, to be a wild card team and go nine and seven.
Starting point is 00:05:13 All right? So you got to lose seven games. This is their second. And if you look at the way their schedule works out, they look like a six or seven lost team. So short week on the road, well coached bears. But the time that game got to the end, go 50 yards in a minute five against that defense, and they're getting a scary pass rush. That's not a place where Tampa Bay right now is built to win.
Starting point is 00:05:33 without their second best receiver, their best tied in, and their best running back. Here's what worries me again. The two things that I wondered about Tom this year, joy is my witness. Number one, Tom's old. This offensive line ain't great. Left tackle opted out. Is this offensive line good enough to win a Super Bowl? Last night did not look good enough.
Starting point is 00:05:55 Did not look good enough. The left tackle who opted out, they missed him. A lot. The second thing I talked about, remember I talked about culture. I kept saying Bruce Ariens, cocktails at five, little Lucy Goosey. The franchise has never buttoned up. Last night, they had 11 penalties for over 100 yards. So the two things I worried about last night, it looked like old Tampa.
Starting point is 00:06:21 It looked like James Tampa without the pick six. It was like a bunch of penalties, bad protection. Tom Brady's getting ticked off. Don't worry about the time out. If you do anything for a long time, drive a car, getting married, being a business, you're going to have bad weeks, bad days, and a brain fart. That just happens. As long as it doesn't happen in Super Bowls, conference championships, you know,
Starting point is 00:06:45 the biggest games of the year, late in the season in December, I'm good with it. That stuff happens. But what can't happen and that what reared its head last night is 11 penalties. That defines Tampa Bay my entire life. 11 penalties, bad pass protection with a bunch of stars. But this is a very forgivable loss, especially when it got down to the point where you're asking Tom, go 55 yards in a minute. That's not where they're at right now against that defense.
Starting point is 00:07:16 Now when Chris Godwin's back with Mike Evans and Leonard Fernett's back, the truth is you wouldn't be in that situation. You would have a 7 to 10 point lead. Tampa was better early. Chicago was better late. They got to clean up some of that stuff because it looked frighteningly. It resembled old Tampa. Penalties and bad pass protection.
Starting point is 00:07:38 Here's Tom after. We just had some negative plays in the second half with a negative play. You know, again, get behind down distance. You know, that's not where you want to be. So just we all got to, we all have to do a better job. This isn't any one position. This isn't any one player. This is a team-wide thing that we all.
Starting point is 00:07:58 all got to collectively, you know, learn each other quickly and make improvements quickly. And, you know, we all have to do a better job. Yeah. Do a better job, Tampa. Tom forgot what down it was. Not the end of the world in a Thursday night game. 11 penalties? You're not winning games like that.
Starting point is 00:08:20 You're not winning games with 11 penalties in this league. And by the way, bad pass protection, 11 penalties never happened in New England. So it's probably really frustrating. for Brady and something he's thought about and then realized last night. All right, let's keep it real. When Dak Prescott entered the NFL, it was not real. It was like Fantasy Island. The best offensive line, the best young running back, his head coach had been an NFL quarterback,
Starting point is 00:08:50 low expectations, two, three teams in the division are rebuilding. This morning we find out Tyron Smith left tackle is now out for the year. Oh, wait, their right tackles out for the year. Oh, wait, their center of the Hall of Fame were retired. He's out forever. Deck Prescott finally is living the real. This is life. Joe Burrow, Sam Darnold, this is the way it works.
Starting point is 00:09:14 Now he's got a bad offensive line. And he's got an outdated coach. And his defense stinks. It didn't stink his first couple years in the NFL. You know, his first year, they were top five and points allowed. Now the defense stinks. The defensive coordinator stinks. The locker room's not good.
Starting point is 00:09:31 No Hall of Fame Jason Witten there. They got a bunch of good receivers, but this is the real life in the NFL. Okay, Russell Wilson has been in this league for nine years. He has yet to have a great offensive line. Aaron Rogers has been in this league for 16 years, played 13. He's had one top five defense. Deshawn Watson is running for his life. One o'clock on Sunday.
Starting point is 00:09:55 Put it down. And by the way, Carson Wentz is throwing. to scout team guys for the third year in a row. That's the reality of the NFL. It is not Dax's first couple of years. No expectations. Best offensive line. Zeke is the best running back.
Starting point is 00:10:11 Jason Garrett is a non-screaming mentor who played in the league and the defense was good. And the division was, you know, really, really, really, really not good. And no, that's not the way it works. The defense is awful. The offensive line now is a patchwork mess. The defense is awful. And now, the question is, can Dactate, take an outdated head coach, a bad defensive coordinator, and win games? Yes, just not against really, really good teams.
Starting point is 00:10:42 I mean, listen, I've never ever resented kids who grow up with money. I've never resented. Some people do. Some people do. I think most of us don't care, right? Most of us, like we got our lives. But there are people that resent the trust fund kid. I don't. But as I've said many times on the show, I acknowledge I would have loved to have been a
Starting point is 00:11:04 trust fund kid. I would have loved to not drive a 1966 Buick in high school, which broke down regularly. I would have loved to have a new BMW. I would have loved to have have money. I would have loved to have an easier life. I would have loved to intern at a station, then they hire me, maybe a network. I would have loved not having 14 years in the minors. But I don't resent it. at all. I had a good time. But Dak was a little bit of a trust fund kid in the NFL. O-line, Zeke, the quarterback, the defense, the rebuilding is a lot of good stuff. Now, it's not the worst situation in the world now, but what he's living is the Joe Burrell
Starting point is 00:11:42 life and the Sam Darnel life and the injury life and the Carson Wentz life and the John Watson life. And I've said this about Patrick Mahomes. Brough, you don't get Andy Reed? You don't get Travis Kelsey, Mitchell Schwartz, Cheetah. You don't get it. The Hunt family. That's not the way it works. Your first team in the NFL. Then you get Alex Smith.
Starting point is 00:12:01 So this is, you know, Dak had a really safe and soft landing in the NFL. And now he's dealing with a bunch of junk and a bunch of stuff that everybody has to. And I think he's hardworking enough, durable enough, tough enough. He's just kind of guy that just gets through it all. He's talented enough. They're going to win some games. year. But beating good teams, no left tackles, backup center. I mean, that's what Russell can
Starting point is 00:12:31 overcome. That's what Aaron can overcome. That's what, that's what Mahomes can overcome. But I don't think that's what that can overcome. I never resented him. Nobody resents Magic for inheriting Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and a great coach and a great front office. But it was a little easier for magic early than it was for Michael Jordan early or LeBron early. We can at least acknowledge that, right? I don't have to resent it, but we have to acknowledge it. And now Dax live in the real life of the NFL quarterbacks. Oh, boy, everybody's going nuts. Tom Brady didn't shake hands. Oh, my Lord. What about the kids? What about the kids? Blazing five, top of next hour, 45 minutes out. Greg CoSell on the other side of this break. And Tom Brady didn't
Starting point is 00:13:22 shake hands. Thoughts on that coming up. Be sure to catch live editions of the herd weekdays in noon Eastern 9 a.m. Pacific on Fox Sports Radio, FS1 and the IHeart Radio app. Imagine an Olympics where doping is not only legal but encouraged. It's the enhanced games. Some call it grotesque. Others say it's unleashing human potential. Either way, the podcast's Superhuman documented it all, embedded in the games and with the athletes for a full year. Within probably 10 days, I'd put on 10 pounds. I was having trouble stopping the muscle growth.
Starting point is 00:13:56 Listen to Superhuman on the I-Hard Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. A win is a win. A win is a win. I don't care what I'm saying. Yep, that's me. Cliver Taylor the 4th. You might have seen the skits, the reactions, my journey from

Or when Kanye said that George Bush didn't like black people. I know what you're thinking. What the hell does George Bush got to do with Little Kim? Well, you can find out on the Look Back at it podcast. I'm Sam Jett.
Starting point is 00:15:20 And I'm Alex English. We pick it here, unpack what went down, and try to make sense of how we survived it. Including a recent episode with Mark Lamont Hill, waxing all about crack in the 80s. To be clear, 84 is big to me, not just because of crack. I'm down to talk about crack on day, but just so y'all know. I mean, at this point, Mark, this is the second episode where we've discussed crack, so I'm starting to see that there's a through line. We also have AIDS on the table right now.
Starting point is 00:15:47 Thank you finishing that sentence. Yes. I don't think there's a more important year for black people. Really? Yeah. For me, it's one of the most important years for black people in American history. Listen to look back at it on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Welcome to my new podcast, Learn the Hard Way with me, your host, and your favorite therapist, Kear Games.
Starting point is 00:16:10 And in recognition of mental health awareness month, I'm bringing over a decade of my own experience in the mental health field and conversations with so many incredible guests. I'm talking, Tripp Fontaine, Ryan, Ryan, Sometimes when we're in the pursuit of the thing, we get so wrapped up in the chase that we don't realize that we are in possession of the thing. And we're still chasing it. And we don't know when we've done enough. Because people scoreboard watch. Life becomes about wins and losses. Steve Burns, Dustin Ross, because you find it important to be a good person while you hear on earth.
Starting point is 00:16:43 Are you a good person because you're afraid? Because that's two different intentions, bro. Absolutely. And that's two different levels of trust. I want you to just really be a good person. Join me, Kear Gaines, as we have real conversations about healing, growth, fatherhood, pressure, and purpose
Starting point is 00:16:58 on my new podcast, Learn the Hardway. Open your free iHeartRadio app. Search Learn the Hardway and listen now. Smart Grill Technology allows for an even heat. It's called RecTech, built by grillers for grillers. Go to rectech with aq.com, R-E-C-E-Q-com. Oh, boy, Tom Brady.
Starting point is 00:17:16 He did not shake hands with Nick Foles after the game. Oh, such bad sportsmanship. Really? Did Jimmy Kimmel, Stephen Copier, and Jimmy Fallon after shows call? Hey, congrats, bro. You crushed me in the ratings. Awesome job.
Starting point is 00:17:34 You got better guests. We're going to have to cut staff. Stop. This isn't high school volleyball. It's not high school sports. It's not even college sports. It's the NFL. It's alpha males.
Starting point is 00:17:45 Tens of millions of dollars careers at stake. Tom Brady just forgot what down it was. He was pissed and LeBron didn't shake hands. He wasn't happy. 99% of the time they both do it the right way. But fake humility, sportsmanship above all else. No, winning above all else. Kirk Cousins 0 and 9 on Monday Night Football, but he's always gracious.
Starting point is 00:18:07 I'll take the guy that's 11 and 3 on Monday Night Football and occasionally pissed. It's not good sportsmanship above everything else. it's winning in the NFL above everything else. What about the kids? They're your kids, figure it out. They're not mine. I don't like yours. I like mine sometimes.
Starting point is 00:18:25 I don't care about your kids. If you can't watch a game with your kids and describe what happens to give it context, then maybe you should do more than make kids and have kids. Maybe you should learn to parent them. If you can't figure out, oh, what am I going to tell my son? Yeah, Tom should have taken a left there and shaking his hand. You want some ice cream? Really, your kids, so traumatic for your kids, they'll never get through school.
Starting point is 00:18:48 Oh, my God. They've dealt with COVID in Zoom classes for six months. They're not going to be able to withstand Tom Brady and LeBron James, not shaking hands. Enough with a false humility. Good sportsmanship above everything else. In soccer, they literally exchange flags before games. Think about that. In soccer, they give you a present before the game.
Starting point is 00:19:08 The game is often called a friendly. That ain't the NFL. Now, we tackle you, put your face in the day. dirt, tweak your knee, jam our thumb into your ear, and it's emotionally legal. And when we lose, we're upset. And there's tens of millions and jobs in the line, no guaranteed contracts. That's the culture of the NFL. Sometimes guys don't want to shake hands.
Starting point is 00:19:34 I've been in this business for 40 years. When I steal a top advertiser from another show, do they call me? Congrats, bruh. You just took that big retailer from me. You know what we do when we do that? We high five. Yeah. Awesome.
Starting point is 00:19:47 And they sulk. And we do it regularly. And we want to because we're competitive. Because there's tens of millions of dollars at stake. This is the NFL. I don't care about what you're going to tell your kids. Be a parent. Your kids are handling this awful pandemic.
Starting point is 00:20:04 They're doing just fine. Some of the parents are, but the kids are overwhelmingly doing just fine. Shaking hands, LeBron, Tom, Brady. They have both been incredible ambassadors for their sports. sports. Unbelievable gracious ambassadors for their sports. They have literally made executives at the NBA and NFL rich. They've made salespeople rich and executives rich and other players rich
Starting point is 00:20:27 and coaches are driving Mercedes because of Brady and LeBron. And this week they didn't shake hands. Brady forgot what down it was and LeBron's had to live in a bubble for three months. Maybe they're not in the mood. I got their back. Greg Coseller on the corner, Joy Taylor with the News. No, no, no, no, no. Turn on the news.
Starting point is 00:20:47 This is the herd line news. Nick Foles is so sweet, though. He looks so sad out there looking for him. By the way, Foles was on radio this morning. We'll have that later in the show. You just have to sometimes understand. In the moment, people have a right to be human and mad. I've 1,000% with you.
Starting point is 00:21:07 It's why I thought the reaction to Cam Newton in his press conference was ridiculous. He just lost the biggest game of his career. in the Super Bowl, can he be upset? I prefer he'd be upset over whatever else he's supposed to be. He's upset. Let him be upset. Would you be upset if you lost in the biggest moment of your career? Yes. That's what he was. You ever right, the false humility out there and sportsmanship above all else,
Starting point is 00:21:32 I like athletes that are authentic. I really do. I really like authentic athletes, and it doesn't bother me when they talk politics. Well, they're human beings. Everyone else does this every single day. Yeah, everybody else on Twitter can have a play. political thought, but if a basketball player does. It's this idea that because it's entertainment, that it's supposed to fit within the box. If that's what you want, go pick your favorite show and watch
Starting point is 00:21:52 that because you know it's going to be consistent for what you want. This is sports and it's played by human beings. And we don't know how it's always going to end the game or the reaction. We just don't know. Exactly. That's what makes sports great. So LeBron is one win away from bringing the Lakers. Their 17th NBA title.
Starting point is 00:22:08 I couldn't hear how many? 17. 17. 17. 17. Okay. Yes. I'm looking forward to tonight. though, but he says he's learned he'll only gain Lakers fans respect once he has found success
Starting point is 00:22:20 in L.A. What I've learned in a Laker is that the Laker faithful don't give a damn what you've done before. Until you become a Laker, you got to do it with them as well. So they don't care about your resume at all until you become a Laker, then you got to do it as a Laker, then they respect you. I've learned that. It's very true. Lakers fans are pretty particular about that, as they should be,
Starting point is 00:22:50 because they have 16 NBA titles and are a legendary franchise. They're NBA royalty. Yeah. They don't celebrate, you know, New England doesn't celebrate wild card. The Yankees don't celebrate wild card playoff victories. Like the Laker fans are like, okay, we've had Wilt and Kareem and Kobe and Magic. And we've had Pat Riley coaching and Phil Jackson coaching, like Frank Vogel and LeBron win, and then we'll put our arms around you a little.
Starting point is 00:23:16 Well, this will be LeBron's 10th finals appearance, and if he wins, he'll be his fourth championship overall, and he will have won a title with his third different franchise. They're wearing the Black Mamba jerseys tonight. Oh, over. They're four-and-oh and wearing them. Interesting conversation that kind of pops up on Twitter every once in a while is that if he wins a championship, will they retire his number?
Starting point is 00:23:42 Well, he's not done here. Because there's only one title. Well, let's say he wins one title, right? Like, the NBA is going to look differently next year. Who knows? Like, they're in the finals now, and they're one game away from winning another championship. So I kind of looked at the guys who have retired jerseys.
Starting point is 00:23:57 Oh, yeah. Because what he just said is, what is the success that you have with the Lakers? Because Lakers fans are always arguing back and forth about it because if he only wins one title, is enough for him to retire. Because it's the jersey, because it is LeBron James. Well, Kobe obviously, has 8 and 24. Wilt, Eldron Baylor, Gail Goodrich, Magic Johnson, Karim, Shaquille, James Worthy, Jerry West, and Jamal Wilkes.
Starting point is 00:24:16 As much as I love LeBron, I don't think it's really... I mean, I will say this. Well, Wilt only has one title. Elgin Baylor has no titles. Gail Goodrich has one, and Jerry West has one with the Lakers. That's a good point. That's a good point. So it's not, there's precedent for it.
Starting point is 00:24:33 Can we debate that Monday? I haven't done my research. That's good. Well, it's interesting thought because people argue about it all the time on Twitter. So I wanted to look and see how many... So Gail Goodrich is retired. These are the retired jersey The Lakers, yes.
Starting point is 00:24:45 But I wanted to look at the titles They won with the Lakers Because that's what always What Lakers fans are talking about Like, oh, you know, you gotta win multiple titles Yeah, no, it's a, it's a, Especially you could say he won in a pandemic The year Kobe passed.
Starting point is 00:24:57 It's been an un- Oh, I mean, this is an unbelievable title to win for sure. I'm just like if this is the only one. Obviously, maybe this is a conversation we have once he's retired, but you know, it's interesting to think about. It's really, I got to say, NBA, nice job. Unbelievable. Not a single test.
Starting point is 00:25:14 Unbelievable. If you'd have told me in May, we were getting this. Lakers Heat Final, no positive tests, I would have said. It exceeded my expectations. Oh, by a mile, not even close. It's one of the biggest feats ever accomplished in sports history. The quality, I'll go back to something. With no air travel, with no flights.
Starting point is 00:25:36 The energy of the players, this is something that needs to be considered. shortened, let's knock some games off. LeBron's energy looks like he's 29 years old. Or, well, they may be in a bubble next season, too. So they may be bringing some of what they've learned over to next season anyway. But, you know, maybe it's something to consider to have the final, you know, the conference finals or something all in one place to eliminate this. But I guess obviously the fans aren't going to want that.
Starting point is 00:26:02 So the Chargers have announced that Justin Herbert will be the team starting quarterback going forward. Kind of saw this coming, but it's official now. Anthony Lynn said the judge. job is Herbert's for the rest of the season, and he won't have to worry about being benched during any rough patches, so they're going to ride it out with their rookie quarterback. One week ago, Herbert's odds to win offensive rookie of the year were plus 1,500, according to Fox Bet. They have jumped to plus 300, which is second best in the league behind Joe Burrow. We knew it was going to happen. It was just happening faster than we thought.
Starting point is 00:26:30 Yes. Well, while this is great for Justin Herbert, and I do think this is the right move for the Chargers, where does this leave Tyrod Taylor? It's a very interesting situation with Tyrod Taylor. It's a very interesting situation with Tyra Taylor because there's always that conversation of can you lose your job to injury and obviously the answer is yes it happens all the time right but this wasn't really an injury like this was inflicted on him so the NFL players association has opened an investigation to the incident and a 60 day window he has a 60 day window to file a grievance and things are on hold right now because they have to the grievances dependent on if he'll suffer any material loss but he's going to be a free agent after the season and all of his guaranteed money and
Starting point is 00:27:09 his two-year contract with the Chargers was last year. Yeah, if I was a Chargers, I'd probably give him another two-year deal, because I don't think there's going to be a huge market for him as a starter. And so maybe if you're the Chargers, you're like, listen, we love you. You're going to be the best backup in the league, because I don't think there's going to be a lot of starting jobs available. Yeah, I would agree with that. I'm just saying from Tyrod's perspective, I mean, I don't know, get a good lawyer. It might be, I don't know if you want to hang it up, but that is real, I mean,
Starting point is 00:27:34 you lost the starting job to Justin Herbert because of the doctor's mistake. Finally, the Texans now have to find a new GM and a new head coach after firing Bill O'Brien. And JJ Watts says the team needs to bring in people who will make building around Deshaun Watson their priority. DeShon Watson is an incredible quarterback. He's the face of this franchise. He's the future of this team in this city. So we have to do whatever we possibly can to make sure that he's in the best position to have success and to lead this place to success not only this year, not only next year, but for the next 10 years.
Starting point is 00:28:07 Yes. Everybody else outside of Deshaun and the left tackle, I'm willing to move. And this should have always been the foremost obligation of Bill O'Brien as the GM and as the head coach. Reportedly, J.J. Watt and Bill O'Brien got into a verbal blow-up at practice the week leading up to the week three loss in Pittsburgh. And that was reportedly when O'Brien lost the team. I mean, if you lose J.J. Watt or Deshaun Watson, essentially, you're going to lose this team. I mean, they are the faces of that franchise. Especially when you're losing games and you lose your star. That's a little bit too much losing at too many positions. Good stuff. Joy with the news.
Starting point is 00:28:46 Well, that's the news. And thanks for stopping by. The Heard Lye News. 30 minutes from now, my blazing five, let's bring on. We don't bring it on. Usually we bring them on it Thursday. We weren't on the air yesterday. We said let's bring Greg CoSell on.
Starting point is 00:28:58 First Hour on Friday. It's our NFL meat sandwich. What a pleasure for me. 41 years NFL film was my friend. Somebody I just love his stuff. And he is now joining us. you by Mercedes-Benz the best or nothing. So I've always been a fan of Carson Wentz.
Starting point is 00:29:11 You know, last, this was classic Carson Wentz, sort of just taking what they give him. Where do you stand with Carson Wentz after a reasonably strong performance? Did you see some confidence gained from a couple of weeks earlier? Well, Colin, I've always been a believer that you have to evaluate quarterbacks in a vacuum. You have to isolate the way they play separate from the team. And I think Wentz was better last week. I still think there are things he's not seeing clearly, and he's missing some throws because of it.
Starting point is 00:29:43 And when I say missing throws, he's not turning it loose. He's just not getting a clear picture. But he was more accurate last week. He made a couple of plays we think of as Carson Wentz plays. And certainly the long touchdown in the fourth quarter was a great throw. Yes, it is a team that lacks weapons. But I think then it becomes incumbent upon the coaching staff to, schematically do things that help the quarterback in terms of defined reads.
Starting point is 00:30:10 The Eagles tend to run a lot of what we call individual and isolation routes where they ask their receivers to win one-on-one. That's fine if you have great receivers. If you don't have great receivers, you need to help them with your concepts, stacks, bunches, motions, rubs. You need to do more of those kinds of things. So they face the Steelers in a captivating game. Pittsburgh's defense, and this is Mike Tomlin's forte, it's very good up front.
Starting point is 00:30:40 On film, is it the best you've seen? Like, what are its strengths? What does it look like on film? I think it's the best defense in the NFL, to be honest with you. I think they're very good at all three levels. They're really good in their sub-nickel and sub-dine with their down-four rushing the quarterback, and they have really good blitz packages. Their slot corner, Mike Hilton, is as good a blitzer.
Starting point is 00:31:03 from the slot as there is in the league. And on the back end, they are really good with disguise, with late movement. They cause a lot of problems for quarterbacks. To me, they're a really good defense. And this is a tough matchup for the Eagles. Yeah, I think so, too. Pittsburgh's healthier and rested. All right.
Starting point is 00:31:20 So I can talk about Mike Nolan being a little outdated as a journeyman defensive coordinator. What worried me the most was the lack of effort on that reverse with OBJ. It looked like multiple players were like jogging down the field. Is it schemes? Is it personnel? DeMarcus Lawrence is still active, but he's not very productive. Jalen Smith is not filling lanes. What is it with them? Is it a personnel?
Starting point is 00:31:45 Is it schematics? What is the tape say on the Cowboys defense? You know, I always am fascinated by certain narratives that get thrown out there. Last week, their D-line got moved by double teams very easily. I didn't think Jalen Smith had a very good game. I didn't think he saw things particularly well and was a beat late to react. But I know a lot of people have been talking about, boy, they're doing a lot of things. You know, there's too much.
Starting point is 00:32:09 You know, I find those things interesting. Bill Belichick's incredibly multiple when it comes to his defensive fronts, and he's a genius. Mike Nolan's incredibly multiple with his defensive fronts, and he seems to be an idiot. So, you know, these kinds of narratives, I find fascinating. Last week, they obviously did not play well. They were a little soft up front, getting moved far too easily. Yeah. So Deshawn Watson's going to have a new coach.
Starting point is 00:32:34 I defended Bill O'Brien. I said he won post-Jerry Sandusky at chaos at Penn State. He got Christian Hackenberg drafted. That was a feat. He goes to the NFL and outside of the Deshawn Watson injury year. He had a winning record. He won a division with Brock Osweiler. And I'm like, if I was a top college program, I'd hire him if I had an opening,
Starting point is 00:32:54 and I think he deserves a second job, is there anything now that he is gone? how do you elevate Deshawn Watson? Their offensive line, they can't run the ball every time I watch them this year. What do you think they need to do to make it easier for Deshawn Watson going forward? Well, I think Sean Watson's a fascinating evaluation. We know that he can be really good from the pocket within the structure of your offense. We know that he can be really good with his ability to make secondary action improvisational plays. We know that.
Starting point is 00:33:28 But there's also an inconsistent. to his game. There are times he doesn't see things clearly. There are times he holds the ball too much. There are times he leaves the pocket prematurely. In some ways, he's the kind of quarterback that you're not sure what you're going to get snap after snap. Now, I think he'll get there because he's a really smart kid, and I know he works very hard. But I think that there's just an inconsistency to his game. If people want to put that on Bill O'Brien, that's fine. But I think whether he plays this way his whole career, I guess we'll find out. But I think he's still a little bit of a work in progress.
Starting point is 00:34:08 Yeah. Aren't we all? Okay. So before I get to Belichick on Mahomes, which is, I think he's masterful, and he's had four first halves against Mahomes that have been very successful. I want to talk about Colts Browns. So very quietly, the Colts have built an enormously tough defense. Yes, they have.
Starting point is 00:34:28 Really, and I feel like Brown's Colts, it's kind of the same thing. They want to run the ball, play good defense, limit their quarterback. I just think the Colts are going to do a better job this weekend. What do you see in that Colts Browns matchup? Well, there are two teams that are very similar, and it's funny you say that. There's a number of teams now that have moved in that direction in terms of how they want to play. Minnesota's like that clearly. So you're dealing with a Colts defense that is very front-seven based.
Starting point is 00:34:54 They don't blitz a lot. They rush the quarterback. with four. They've got a very good linebacking unit. They're multiple with their front looks. They've got a great three technique defensive tackle into Forrest Buckner, a really good linebacker and Darius Lennar. They got some people that a lot of people might not know about. They've got a nose tackle named Grover Stewart, who's a very good player. They still have Justin Houston. So they've got very good players and they rely on that front four an awful lot. And it's a really good linebacking course. So these are two teams that are essentially built the same way, Colin.
Starting point is 00:35:29 Let's run the ball. Let's play good defense. If our quarterback throws it 25 times, we're perfectly happy with that. Four games against Patrick Mahomes, and Belichick in the first half has given him issues in all four first halves. What's the secret sauce? What does the tape say? Well, he does it differently. That's the thing about Belichick. It's not always the same. There have been times where he's doubled Hill, doubled Kelsey. There's been times he's put corners on Kelsey. Last week, he played a lot of softer coverage, played a much higher percentage of zone coverage.
Starting point is 00:36:06 They tend to be a more man-based defense, played far more zone coverage. So it's a different sauce, as you call it, every time because Belichick rarely does the same thing. You know, I think, look, this is not rocket science as far as an approach. you want to limit the big plays. That's the thing, because Mahomes is so special off structure and off schedule, you want to make sure you limit those plays. Now, he hit a few later. I remember the big play to Kelsey. They were in man coverage on that play. And Williams, who's a big corner slash safety, he's sort of their man matchup on really good tight ends for the Patriots and Kelsey beat him. But for the most part, it was a really strong performance. And obviously, their offense couldn't get anything generated. So it's, the second half progressed, it was just a tough go. Justin Herbert, Chargers, they named him the starter. My eyes tell me, he looked a little bit, you know, at the end of the year, that conservative Oregon coaching staff let him let it rip a little bit.
Starting point is 00:37:06 And we were all like, senior bowl, Rose Bowl, you and I talk, we're like, that's, that looks like an NFL starter early. What's the film say on him? I think the film's been impressive. I think they're doing a really nice job with him. I mean, he's not at the point in his career or he's going to be a big time, aggression reader, but he's tough in the pocket. He's physically imposing. What I like most, and this is important when I evaluate a quarterback column, is he is willing to turn it loose.
Starting point is 00:37:33 He's an aggressive thrower. And I think in the NFL, you have to be that way. Now, obviously, as you develop in your career, you want to make sure that you channel that a little bit, as Josh Allen has done to some extent. Yeah. But I think that Justin Herbert, it's in his DNA. He's going to throw the football. And I think you have to do that in the NFL. Yeah, we tend to nitpick all these guys in college. Big, strong, smart, lets it rip. Mobile looks good to me. Finally, Joe Burrow is better than I thought. I said I thought my comp was Tony Romo. I think he's done a terrific job with marginal protection. It's our play of the week. But let's just talk about what you see so far with the Bengals young quarterback. And Burroughs different than Herbert because he's not a big arm guy.
Starting point is 00:38:17 Yeah. Burrow is a timing rhythm player. And they play. to his strengths. They've been in empty sets far more than any team in the NFL. And when you're on empty, the ball comes out quick. But there's, he has a very refined feel for progression reading for a young quarterback. The ball comes out. There's a rhythmic feel. You know, Colin, you've watched quarterback for a long time. You can see when a quarterback plays rhythmically. And I think that Zach Taylor has done a really nice job, sort of designing plays. And that's what we're going to look at. We're going to look at a really well-designed play right now so we can run it and we'll see it. So here's a play from last week where he hits T. Higgins, who, by the way, is playing very well.
Starting point is 00:38:59 And I think he's going to be a really good player. Yeah. But here's an example. Here's what they wanted to get done. They wanted to get Higgins on this in-breaking route. We just saw the play. So Borough is in the gun. So you want to get Higgins right there, right in the middle of the field on an in-breaking route.
Starting point is 00:39:14 So who do you have to control on this play to do that? You have to control the two stacked linebackers because otherwise they're going to be right in the middle of the passing lane. So how do you control those two linebackers? This is where design football comes into play. The one that's closest to the bottom, to the top of the screen, you control with Drew Sample, the tight end. He's going to run a route through the formation. Now, what you do here is you control the one closest to Higgins with play action and you get the linebacker to look into the backfield. As I said, the far linebacker, Drew Sample controls him with his route.
Starting point is 00:39:51 So what you're doing is you're expanding the two linebackers with what you do in the backfield and with your route that opens the passing lane. Notice the rhythm throw. So this is designed setting up your quarterback to make what's essentially an easy throw. But you're setting him up beautifully. The ball can come out. You get run after catch and you get a 30-yard gain. Yeah. It's amazing how often just a little tweak by a receiver, a back that just moves a safety or a linebacker just leans him right and you can go left.
Starting point is 00:40:24 It's just amazing how often it's just a little subtle step by a tight end to the left, moves a linebacker, two steps over. There's the crease in the window and burrow delivers. No, he's been very, you know, when you see a player, particularly a quarterback con who looks like he did in college, you know he'll be a good player because he looks exactly. the same as he did at LSU last year. Good stuff, Greg CoSell, NFL films. Thanks, Greg. Thanks, Colin. Appreciate it. Coming up next, a quarterback you're selling stock on, and I'm buying more of it.
Starting point is 00:40:54 That's coming up. Be sure to catch live editions of the herd weekdays in noon Eastern 9 a.m. Pacific. Imagine an Olympics where doping is not only legal, but encouraged. It's the enhanced games. Some call it grotesque. Others say it's unleashing human potential. Either way, the podcast's Superhuman documented it all. embedded in the games and with the athletes for a full year.

Do you remember when Diana Ross double-tap Little Kim's boobs at the VMAs? Or when Kanye said that George Bush didn't like black people. I know what you're thinking. What the hell does George Bush got to?
Starting point is 00:42:43 I do a little Kim. Well, you can find out on the Look Back at it podcast. I'm Sam J. And I'm Alex English. Each episode, we pick it here, unpack what went down, and try to make sense of how we survived it. Including a recent episode with Mark Lamont Hill, waxing all about crack in the 80s. To be clear, 84 is big to me, not just because of crack. I'm down to talk about crack on day, but just so you all know.
Starting point is 00:43:07 I mean, at this point, Mark, this is the second episode where we've discussed crack. So I'm starting to see that there's a through line. We also have age. on the table right now. Thank you for finishing that sentence. I don't think there's a more important year for black people. Really? Yeah.
Starting point is 00:43:22 For me, it's one of the most important years for black people in American history. Listen to look back at it on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Welcome to my new podcast, Learn the Hard Way with me, your host, and your favorite therapist, Kear Games. And in recognition of mental health awareness month, I'm bringing over a decade of my own experience in the mental health field and conversations with so many incredible guests.
Starting point is 00:43:46 I'm talking. Tripp Fontaine, Ryan Clark. Sometimes when we're in the pursuit of the thing, we get so wrapped up in the chase that we don't realize that we are in possession of the thing. And we're still chasing it. And we don't know when we've done enough because people scoreboard watch.
Starting point is 00:44:03 Life becomes about wins and losses. Steve Burns, Dustin Ross. Because you find it important to be a good person while you hear on earth. Are you a good person because you're afraid? Because that's two different intentions, bro. Absolutely. And that's two different levels of trust.
Starting point is 00:44:17 I want you to just really be a good person. Join me, Kear Gaines, is we have real conversations about healing, growth, fatherhood, pressure, and purpose on my new podcast, learn the hard way. Open your free, our heart radio app. Search, learn the hard way, and listen now. Good to have you in, Michelin, Endurance XT, silicone wiper blades at Walmart. That's where you get them last two times longer than other blades. It's good to have you in on a Friday blazing five top of the hour. You know, it's just funny that whenever you're playing these big games like Jimmy Garoppolo and Patrick Mahomes in the Super Bowl,
Starting point is 00:44:52 and Garoppolo loses and everybody just sells Jimmy Garoppel. It's like you watch the game because like 100 million people watched it and Garoppolo outplayed Mahomes for three quarters. He misses a throw and he's no good. Have you seen San Francisco with Nick Mullins lately? They just lost to Philadelphia. And Lamar Jackson lost a lot. Patrick Mahomes. Everybody's like, Lamar, I'm done. He's a ceiling. Okay. Lamar Jackson is completing 68% of his throws, 7 TD's one pick, a pass rating of
Starting point is 00:45:21 11.5. I'm going to buy your stock. He plays Joe Burrow this weekend. Little context. Joe Burroughs older than Lamar Jackson. Lamar's 23 years old. When I was in college, like 22, I was pulling fire extinguishers out and spraying people. Like, he's 23. He's a kid. He's terrific. He got housed by Patrick Mahomes. Welcome to the NFL. That's going to happen to everybody for 15 years a lot.
Starting point is 00:45:50 Andy Reed and Patrick Mahomes are going to dice up, you know, almost everybody not named Belichick and his quarterbacks. I'll buy your Lamar Jackson stock. I was like, let's just take a deep breath. Last week he dropped 31 points against actually a really good Washington defense. Jared Goff's going to face him this weekend. Good luck with that. Washington defense is no fun.
Starting point is 00:46:15 And the rookie's back. The Ohio State Rush End is back. Chase Young's back this week. Watch what the Rams do offensively. Watch them struggle this week. Watch Jared Goff. The Ravens and Lamar dropped 31 points last week against Washington. Lamar didn't even have to finish the game against Washington.
Starting point is 00:46:37 Take a deep breath. Lamar's really, really good. You're selling stock, I'm buying it, okay? I do this tier one, tier two quarterback thing. Everybody always lists their quarterbacks. I don't want to do that. I just put quarterbacks in two tiers. I don't care about the other guys that aren't any good.
Starting point is 00:46:52 Tier one is Russell Wilson, Mahomes, and Rogers. They can do stuff you can't explain. They can carry bad lines, bad defenses. They're like superhuman. And then there's special guys, and that's kind of fluid. You can see I've moved around a lot of guys Wednesday. Derek Carr, Breeze, in, out, boom. Lamar's the head of the class there with Brady, Ben, Deshawn, and Josh Allen.
Starting point is 00:47:14 I move Josh Allen in. If you're one of these two, you can end up winning a Super Bowl. That's all I care about. If you're in a Tier 1, you can carry a bad unit to a Super Bowl. In Tier 2, you probably need a little more help. Deshawn's not winning a lot of playoff games with that offensive line, but this is a good tier to be in. I don't even care by Tier 3.
Starting point is 00:47:34 By Tier 3, Tier 4, Tier 5, let's be honest. I'm looking for another quarterback. I'm drafting potentially another quarterback. I'll take every phone call from every GM in the league about a quarterback. I'm very close. If San Francisco loses again without Jimmy Garoppolo, I'm going to put him in tier two without playing. Because you can't keep telling me Kyle Shanahan is the smartest offensive coach in the world than he is,
Starting point is 00:47:56 and they can't win at home against beat up Philadelphia without Jimmy Garoppolo. But we've done this now to Garoppolo and Lamar Jackson. They play a huge television game. We all watch it, and they have like a bad quarter. a bad miss, and we just bail on him. Folks, 85% of this league would die for Lamar Jackson, and 80 to 75% would die for Jimmy Garoppolo. Yeah, Seattle wouldn't, Green Bay wouldn't,
Starting point is 00:48:21 maybe Pittsburgh this morning wouldn't, maybe Tampa this morning wouldn't, maybe they would in two years. Come on, Lamar's fine. He's doing great. Just look at the numbers. And he's also now, let's be honest now, he's a target. The wide receiving course, good, not special. It's going to be okay.
Starting point is 00:48:39 Blazing five top of the hour. You know, it's funny. I went off this morning on Nick Foles. I'll play it next hour. Apparently has a thought about Tom Brady. Joy and I agree with this. This idea about LeBron and Tom Brady, these guys have been incredible ambassadors for their sports.
Starting point is 00:48:59 They've been so gracious. You do get a mulligan, right? You can forget a timeout, not shake a hand. These are public figures. Can you imagine if your job at the post office or in landscape? We had a camera on you all the time. Brady was in a bad mood. LeBron's in a bad mood.
Starting point is 00:49:15 You get a mulligan. I'm giving you one. Or eight in a 20-year career. Blazing five next. Another podcast from some SNL late-night comedy guy, not quite.
