This is an I-Heart podcast.
Guaranteed Human.
Another podcast from some SNL, late-night comedy guy,
not quite.
Unhumor me with Robert Smygel and friends.
Me and hilarious guests from Bob Odenkirk to David Letterman
help make you funnier.
This week, my guest, SNL's Mikey Day and head writer,
Streeter Seidel, help an a cappella band
with their between songs banter.
Where does your group perform?
We do some retirement homes.
Those people are starving for banter.
Listen to humor me with Robert Smigel
and friends on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.
Imagine an Olympics where doping is not only legal, but encouraged.
It's the enhanced games.
Some call it grotesque.
Others say it's unleashing human potential.
Either way, the podcast's Superhuman documented it all, embedded in the games and with the athletes
for a full year.
Within probably 10 days, I'd put on 10 pounds.
I was having trouble stopping the muscle growth.
Listen to Superhuman on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.
Hey, this is Robert from the Stuff to Blow Your Mind podcast.
Joe and I are both lifelong Star Wars fan, so we're celebrating May the 4th with a brand new week of fun, thought-provoking Star Wars-related episodes.
Join us as we tackle science and culture topics from a galaxy far, far away, such as the biology of tauntons and wampas on the ice planet hot, or the practicality and corporate business sense of the Sith rule of,
of two. Listen to Stuff to Bole Your Mind on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever
you get your podcasts. Thanks for listening to The Heard podcast. Be sure to catch us live every
weekday from 12 to 3 Eastern, 9 to noon Pacific on Fox Sports Radio and FS1. Find your local
station for the Heard at Fox Sports Radio.com or stream us live every day on the IHeartRadio app by searching
Heard.
Now let's get this party started. You're listening to Fox Sports Radio.
What up? Welcome in.
This is the herd, wherever you may be,
and however you may be making this part of your day.
Thanks so much.
I'm Doug Gottlie.
In for calling Cowherd.
Don't worry.
Don't worry.
Your boy's back Monday.
All right.
Coming up this hour in the herd,
weird stuff coming out of L.A. with Matt Stafford,
and the Rams try and put out a little fire that was spreading yesterday.
Dan Dockich will join.
us. We'll talk some
as we had a
major retirement in college
basketball and of course
Selection Sunday is coming up and
everybody's like, DG, give me a
pick and make some money. I had a buddy
of mine and I hope he's listening.
Bro, I had a text at
let me see, hold on the middle of my phone. I'm in Chicago
calling the Big Ten games
and
I got a text. Where's my buddy's text?
This is so good.
It was so good.
This is so Vegas.
I got a text at 5.51 a.m., which Vegas time is 3.51 a.m.
Hey, bro.
Can you Venmo me at Grand right now?
I'll send you $1,100 right back.
You're the only guy I know that's up.
Vegas is destroying me this weekend.
So I woke up and I slept in today at about 715.
Hey, you still need it.
Tell me where to send it.
And he's like, nah, came back, but thanks.
Man, I got desperate.
Didn't bring enough credit cards.
Hope you're good.
Thanks for thinking.
Thanks for thinking about it.
I was like, all right.
Is that just perfect?
How does that work?
I don't understand.
What am I?
How would you have sent me $1,100 back?
Feels like a scam.
I mean, he's a lifelong friend of mine.
So I'd get the money.
back in some form or fashion.
Right.
But how does that, how is that music?
Do you have any idea how would have gotten that money back?
I don't understand the logistics or the wire transfers.
I guess it sounds maybe somewhat like a Ponzi scheme.
But at least your buddy seems to have had logic enter his life in rational thought.
And Jay Stu knows maybe he's got some insight on how such.
transactions occur. I've been in on that discussion many times. This is what it is. I'll send you
1,100 means I'm going to win the bet. After you send me the thousand, I'm going to win it, and I'll
send you it right back. That's a desperate guy chasing his money who's many drinks in.
He was many drinks. That actually was part of the conversation. There was another part of the
conversation where he had had a lot to drink. I'll tell you what, Doug. For the
sake of the show, send this guy $1,000 and let's see what happens. So we can just talk about it
for the next two hours and see if you actually get it back. That's a lot of money. I'm not sending
a guy $1,000. I don't know. I think it's a write-off. I think you can do it. If you do it on the
air and you're at host, it's a work expense. He just said he didn't need it anymore.
No, do it anyway. Come on. I'll think about it. It sounds like he's going to need it soon,
so proactively send it. If, and my, oh, here it go. Now my friends are texting me.
You're guessing correctly who this friend is.
So here's the deal.
Getting a cold streak and hit me up on text is completely on brand for my friend.
Completely on brand.
I also, this clearly is a good friend of yours to where he knows that you have horrible sleeping habits and are constantly up early.
Yes.
But don't most people know that or know me?
I mean, you've got to know someone quite well to know their sleeping habits.
Hey, my name's Doug. Nice to meet you. I'm constantly up at 4 a.m.
Yeah. Okay, that's fair. That's fair. I mean, he also knew that I was in a different time zone as possible.
But yes, I have bizarre sleeping habits. Okay. I'm like, again, completely on brand.
If anybody knows me, it's I can fall asleep anywhere at any time. I don't need a long time.
I don't need a long time to sleep, though.
Like, Ryan, these, just, like, we'll let you guys kind of inside the studio.
So this show is being produced by Jason Stewart, my current producer,
my current producer, and Ryan music, my old producer, right?
And both of you have probably seen this.
And if I'm lying, Ryan, I'm lying, I'm dying.
We get six-minute breaks on my show.
I can take a five-minute and 59-second nap.
Literally fall out asleep, five-minute, 59 seconds.
And then, bam.
I'm back. Accurate?
It has occurred, yes.
But I can fall asleep anywhere.
I don't necessarily stay asleep for a long time.
Like, it's a, it's a problem.
It's a gift and a curse.
So I get a lot of accomplished at odd hours, but not a lot of people like getting messages at odd hours.
They don't put it on silence.
I get it when they, when they wake up.
Anyway, yes, it is a good friend of mine.
He also knows that I'm a, I'm a.
a bleeding heart friend more than anything else in that I'll always help a boy out because
I'll never know if I'm in that situation.
But it's all the sleeping habits on brand for me.
Being a degenerate, completely on brand.
And to my three friends who just texted me, now fourth, yes, that's exactly who it is.
And this is on brand for Aaron Rogers.
I don't know if you guys saw this.
This is great.
We're all talking about Aaron Rogers and whether or not he's going to go to the Jets.
And it was kind of weird, right?
Like they go out and they supposedly go out to California and see him.
And then we got nothing.
Now, we're willing to believe, willing to contend that the devil is going to be in the details,
that they got a, the Green Bay is going to try and figure out like, how do we get out of some of this dead cat money?
How do we make this thing?
How do we get as good a deal as.
possible.
Because there's not a lot of people.
I mean, we just talked about how many teams are out on Lamar Jackson.
There are not a lot of teams in on Aaron Rogers.
Aaron Rogers is the first ballot Hall of Famer in any conversation, the best guy to ever play
quarterback.
He said, he's had not just been the MVP, but he's been back-to-back MVP's just going
back a year ago.
He didn't have a good year, but it's not like he was a terrible quarterback.
And you don't think that just on play alone, he'll be bad this year.
And yet, how many teams are really interesting?
into them.
Right?
The money,
whatever they have to trade,
and it can be a bit of a pain.
But in trying to
figure out, all right, is Aaron Rogers
going to get back to being,
remember they called him A-Rod?
Right?
Like, really?
You call him A-Rod?
Like, there's already an A-Rod
and we kind of like him.
But if he get back to the Aaron Rogers
of five, six, seven years ago,
right? He was kind of California
cool.
very smart, clever, amazing with the football, guys seem to like him.
That's the big question.
If I'm the Jets and I'm going to move mountains to bring in this legend,
is he going to be all in?
Or is he going to be this new version of some sort of wannabe shaman?
This may be your answer.
Aaron Rogers 39, he's one of several featured guests
at the Multidisciplinary Association of Psychedelics.
studies. Psychedelic science
2023 event is in June, which is being dubbed the largest
psychedelic gathering in history. The conference, which is
expecting 10,000 attendees will include speeches, workshops, panel
discussions about all things hallucinogens. Of course, Aaron
Rogers has been outspoken about his passion for plant-based
psychedelic ayahuasca, which he credits for helping his mental health
an MVP seasons of 2020 and 2021.
Now, look, again, I disclosed this on my show.
I'll tell you on the herd.
I have no problem.
I saw a shaman, okay?
And it wasn't ayahuasca.
It wasn't sitting in a hut.
It was a different experience.
And I learned, I think, some about myself.
I don't know, like, if I'd try it again.
but it was sort of a box that I wanted to check,
especially going through what I feel like
is a tough time personally.
So I'm not going to sit here and go like,
oh, he's doing psychedelic drugs and these are bad kids.
And like, no, I've never done shrooms or dropped acid.
So I don't, I can't speak from experience there.
I can't speak from the experience of something that Aaron has talked about,
which is like, hey, you're trying to figure out at a time in your life,
you know, some guys,
buy a Porsche, you know, during a midlife sort of crisis where they're trying to discover what's next for them.
Some people, you know, I talk with somebody professional.
I've done that.
I've done this as well.
But Aaron Rogers speaking at a convention is a little bit of a different level, right?
We can all agree there.
Like he's kind of becoming the spokesperson for psychedelics.
Like it's one thing to do at ayahuasca.
It's one thing to go and sweat it out in a hut and try and find out what you're looking for,
what's missing in your life.
It's a completely different level to speak at the trip-out 2003 convention, right?
It just is.
It's very on-brand.
There's nothing.
I'm not saying there's, it's not the legality of it, you know, I don't know the level to it which you fear bad trips.
it's just
it feels like a lot
and it feels
it feels like
this is who he is
and wants to be
and does that connect
in the NFL
does that work
in the structure
of the NFL society
and does that signify
in any way
that he wants to buy in
to being a part
of an organization
which is
football
And I've said this time and again, like, you have lots of people who don't truly understand the basic business plan of NFL teams is one thing.
Win.
The reason that coaches like coaching in the NFL or in the NBA better than college is not because college isn't fun or there's not the youthful energy of people, but you cut out all the other stuff and the only thing that matters is winning.
That's it.
In order to win, you've got to be united.
You got to do it together.
This guy has to only be one agenda, and that agenda has to be winning, putting team above self.
Aaron Rogers, the idea that he'll get back to being leader Aaron Rogers while he's going to be a speaker,
I don't know, it doesn't say keynote, but going to be a speaker at the psychedelic convention,
doesn't signify he wants to go back to being the person that he was previously.
does it?
I don't know.
Very, very,
just like my boy
hit me up from Vegas
at what appears to have been
3.51 in the morning
Vegas time.
Very on brand.
If I were to name any quarterback
in the NFL that would speak
at a psychedelic convention,
there's no question who would be.
You know?
You would think, like,
on brand,
Russell Wilson,
on brand with him
like touring with
either Tony Robbins
or what's the,
oh man,
What's the preacher who has the mega church in Houston?
Joel Osteen, right?
Like, if there was a guy to be with Joel Osteen, that would be Russell Wilson.
And you think of these, like, summer things that people do.
You're like, I could see, you know, like, Pat Mahomes.
Pat Mahomes feels like he'll be, he'll be like in WWE.
Like drinking a Coors, like crushing a Coors light, and then, you know, be in ringside there.
Like all these quarterbacks kind of have a brand.
And Aaron Rogers has found his.
It's psychedelics.
Coming up on the herd, stop me if you heard this before.
Kevin Durant is out with an injury.
One more herd?
The herd streams 24 hours a day, seven days a week within the IHeart radio app.

Yep.

Do you remember when Diana Ross double-tapped Little Kim's boobs at the VMAs?
Or when Kanye said that George Bush didn't like black people.
I know what you're thinking.
What the hell does George Bush got to do with Little Kim?
Well, you can find out on the Look Back at it podcast.
I'm Sam Jett.
And I'm Alex English.
Each episode, we pick a here, unpack what went down, and try to make sense of how we survived it.
Including a recent episode with Mark Lamont Hill,
waxing all about crack in the 80s.
To be clear, 84 is big to me, not just because.
of crack.
I'm down to talk about crack on day, but just so y'all know.
I mean, at this point, Mark, this is the second episode where we've discussed crack.
So I'm starting to see that there's a through line.
We also have AIDS on the table right now.
Thank you for finishing that sentence.
Yes.
I don't think there's a more important year for black people.
Really?
Yeah.
For me, it's one of the most important years for black people in American history.
Listen to look back at it on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your

Hope you're having a great day.
Get ready for an outstanding weekend.
Gary sends in a good question.
How is Aaron Rogers able to be so brazen about psychedelic drug use?
You tell me they're not in the NFL's banned list.
If they're not, how can that be?
It's good question, Gary.
I don't know.
I do know that there's a,
there is a known thing about.
NFL drug tests is that once you take your off-season drug test and you pass it, they don't
test you again. They don't test you again. So for recreational drugs, that's basically how it works.
Performance dancing drugs you can get tested for, I think at later times, but recreational drugs,
it's like one test and then you're not in the program and you're good. It's one of the reasons
they test, you know, when they test for marijuana at the combine, NFL people say that's not a drug test,
it's an IQ test. You know you're going to be tested. If you pop up positive, forget about whether
or not you smoke weed or not smoke weed. You're an idiot. You're not smart enough to understand.
We're not asking a lot. We don't have to say you have to smoke weed. Just don't smoke weed before
the combine. That's it. That's all.
So, but to answer your question, I don't know enough about it.
I do believe that there is one off-season drug test, which you don't know when it's going to occur,
but once it occurs, I don't think you get tested after that, and then you're not in the program.
All right, Dan Dockich is going to join us.
Of course, he's a former head coach at Bowling Green and a longtime college basketball analyst.
We'll get his thoughts on Jim Beheim retiring, the landscape of the sport,
We'll get you ready for selection Sunday in moments.
First, though, ride music with the news.
No, no, no, no, no.
Turn on the news.
This is the herd line news.
Real quick, Doug, to address the question you just asked,
I did a quick search.
They addressed the ayahuasca situation with Aaron Rogers,
the primary psychedelic,
I don't, just going to use the abbreviated version,
DMT, is not,
specifically or explicitly listed under the substances of abuse in the player conduct policy.
So that's why that's not an issue.
I have not been able to reach the point about, you know, shrooms or whatever,
these other psychedelics that he's referring to.
I think he's just done the DMT.
That's, um, Rogan talks about DMT a lot as well.
I believe.
Gotcha.
So, but I don't, I don't know.
Who knows?
All right, Doug.
Let's do some NBA, shall we?
The Phoenix Suns did come out and announce,
Kevin Durant was supposed to make his home debut a few nights ago.
During pregame warm-ups, he rolled his ankle.
He was then ruled out for that game
and has now been ruled out and expected to miss
somewhere between two and three weeks due to that left ankle injury.
Kevin Durant has played three games since being traded to Phoenix.
a quick little estimation in terms of if he misses the full three weeks.
That means his next game will be Friday, March 31st, against the Denver Nuggets.
In which case, there will be six regular season games remaining in the season.
Simple math tells you.
Nine potential games that Kevin Durant will play with his new teammates before the playoffs begin.
Not a lot.
Not a lot.
And it's hard to, one of the things about basketball is,
It's really hard to play with guys when you haven't played with guys.
Especially, it's not like he's a specialist where he's like, well, you know, he only play nine games.
But all he does is coming and shoot three.
He's like, no, it kind of changes everything when you have him.
So, and that was a weird deal, right, where he just rolled his ankle in, like, layup lines.
Yeah, he went to make, like a turnaround pivot move.
And as soon as he planted that left foot, it just rolled over on him.
Just crazy.
I talk about bad luck.
Yeah.
That's just a level of unluckyness that feels unfair.
Yeah.
I mean, I...
The biggest thing that leads me to believe I'm still in on the Suns being the team in the West is,
I cannot buy into anyone else.
I don't know where have you been at on the Nuggets.
I mean, obviously, Yokic is great.
They win a ton of games.
It's just they feel like you're very stereotypical.
great regular season team.
I'm not betting on them in the playoffs.
You know, great for the Kings.
The Warriors have just, you know,
as much as Colin has loved
to double and triple and quadruple
down on the fact that he's saying the Warriors
are still the team to beat and they're figuring things out
and they're getting ready to turn the corner
and Seth Curry's back.
I personally do not see that
from the Warriors this year.
So this may be
one of the few times where it really may come down to
the Suns just have
more talent than everyone.
I, look, I
still think the Warriors
should be the favorite because, again, until
further notice, until further
notice, if they have everybody. But the margin
for error is much slighter.
And last year,
kind of like their first year, they benefited
greatly, you know, Jamal Murray, not
fully healthy.
The sons were upset by
the Mavericks. You know, there's
some other things.
First thing, in regards to the nuggets,
you know, the last time we saw
Jamal Murray deep in the playoffs
was in the bubble. Yeah, he was fantastic.
He was amazing. Now, since then he's torn his ACL,
he hasn't been the same guy.
But let's see. I mean, I think
that you still have to say the Warriors,
if fully healthy, are the favorites.
And I'm more in on the nuggets and other people.
The problem with the Sons is they haven't played together a lot.
And, like,
how many times do we have to see D. Andreiton's
struggle in the playoffs to realize it's hard to play with the traditional center in the playoffs.
I mean, Yolk it struggles enough more than as much as anybody.
But DeAndre Aitin has been kind of unusable in the playoffs.
So I'm not as down with the suns because there's not much of a bench.
And though they have a lot of guys that can score and it takes the pressure off of Chris Paul,
who's clearly not the same guy anymore.
Like there's so many things that I have against them.
So I would slot them as kind of like the third.
And then the other team that I'm intrigued by is the Clippers.
You know, Kauai's probably the best player when he's healthy, but is he going to be healthy enough?
And there's so many other parts of that team, which I still have question, Mark, like, are they really going to depend on Russell Westbrook in the playoffs?
Yeah, I think the answer, every indication we've been getting thus far is, yeah.
I don't love that one.
I love that he's not making much money so you can sit him and not worry about it, but I don't love that one.
So, yeah, it makes it interesting, but there's no clear favor.
Anyway, that's where I am on that deal.
Okay, let's wrap up with this, Doug, turning our attentions to the NFL.
Another intriguing quarterback situation we're monitoring right now is the San Francisco 49ers,
one of if not the best rosters in the league from top to bottom,
badly beaten down by injuries at the quarterback position over the years.
One of those quarterbacks, seventh round pick, Brock Purdy,
whose late-season rally is made for some big, big questions facing San Francisco this off-season.
Reports are just now coming out, Doug, in the past, you know,
few minutes.
His elbow surgery went as well as expected.
He could be ready to go right around the beginning of regular season play.
First of all, no one's ever, it's never been a case of a guy having a procedure done in
professional sports and somebody coming out and going like, yeah, I think I screwed that
one up.
Right?
Sure.
They all go, it went his plan.
Expect to make a full recovery.
Of course they're going to say that.
Yeah, I don't.
we have no idea.
He's not going to be able to throw a football for months.
Yeah, I think it's three months before he could start throwing
nine months before they think he'll be fully ready to go,
which is why the timeline is right around the beginning of regular season.
Yeah, I'm skeptical. I'm not.
I'm skeptical. I'm skeptical.
I'm skeptical.
So then what do they do with, I guess, do they rev up Trey Lance?
He hasn't been healthy.
And that's exactly what I was going to say is, I have major questions about the 49ers.
And I think this is why everyone continues, whether it's real, not real, pictures of a kitten or not putting Tom Brady on the 49ers.
Because they shouted down these rumors as well.
But, like, Trey Lance had a second ankle surgery.
And you can tell me, oh, no, it wasn't a setback.
It was just this.
It was just that.
I'm no doctor or medical expert, but almost every time you have surgery, it's supposed to be in and out, one and done, not multiple surgeries.
And with this Brock Purdy situation, oh, we went in and went as great as expected.
Okay, well, he was having elbow swelling weeks after sustaining the injury to where the surgery had to be postponed multiple times until today.
So, look, maybe it all works out.
Maybe Trey Lance is going to be fully healthy, and maybe Brock Purdy will be ready to go back early in the regular season, and this isn't an initial.
issue. But as of right now, I have
huge, huge questions
about what they plan on
doing about this quarterback position. And
that's not even factoring in what you had just mentioned.
Is Trey Lance any good?
Yeah,
they have to go get, there has to be a veteran
guy. You know, a
veteran guy out there. Is it a
Sam Darnold? Is it a,
you know, I don't think it's a baker?
Because, I mean, like, look, the Cardinals
are interesting. They have no idea when they'll have
Kyler Murray. They need a quarterback who
wants to start, but doesn't want to be the long-term
starter and doesn't make a ton of money. So, yes,
the Niners are very interesting, and I
have zero faith
that in the
Trey Lance deal,
you know,
you can also draft guys and
you know, have a guy play on the
cheap. The Niners think,
and I think they're right, they are that good
that, I don't want to say anybody can play
quarterback, but they kind of think anybody
can play quarterback. And that's Rye Music with News.
Well, that's the news.
Thanks for stopping by.
The Hurd Line News.
Dan Dockets joins us.
Of course, he has his own show on Outkick, and he's a longtime college hoops analyst,
a former head coach.
And he's the guy who, he and Dean Smith, the only two guys to shut down Michael Jordan in college.
Dan, I want your reaction.
This is Jim Beheim, who in one of the weirdest, one of the weirdest retirements, I can recall.
They lose the other day to Wake Forest.
and he says he gave a retirement speech on senior night,
but nobody picked up on it.
Then when asked if he was retiring,
he said that wasn't his decision to make.
When asked if he wanted to come back,
he said he didn't know.
He did, in fact, retire.
Here's Jim Beheim in his press conference moments ago.
I've known Adrian Autry since he was 16 years old.
He had 30 in New York City against Kenny Anderson.
And I said, that's a guy we got to get to come to Syracuse.
A few years ago, we needed to get him to come back.
He came back and he's a great coach.
I think someone said that Adrian should get an older mentor to help him coach.
Adrian Autry does not need an older mentor to help him coach.
He can coach.
He's not here as a recruiter or a player.
He's here as a coach.
And he knows how to coach.
And he's got a couple of assistants.
that both are good enough to be head coaches.
There will be no problem coaching going forward, none.
You were obviously part of Coach Knight's staff,
and there's been mixed results at Indiana, you know, since he was fired.
What are your thoughts on the state of Syracuse basketball head and forward?
Well, I always say this, Doug, and thanks for having me.
Be careful what you wish for.
That's one of my life's mottoes.
That note that D goes unpunished.
You know, Syracuse, you've done games there.
It's lousy weather.
It's terrible parking.
The facility is right in the middle of campus, which makes it even more difficult.
You're getting 2018, 20, 25,000 people in there every night.
Syracuse basketball is a great, great, great setup.
So be careful a little bit what you wish for.
You know, it's interesting.
He loses the wake.
Steve Forbes is considered an up-and-coming.
doing a great job. Well, they had the same record.
You know, and so, you know, from a media slash perception standpoint,
it was time to go. And you know what?
Adrian Autry, he gets the opportunity of a lifetime.
He is probably the perfect guy. He doesn't need a mentor.
He's 50 years old. He's played. He's coach.
I remember going with Bobby Gonzalez at the Tullentine High School
to go take a look at him back 100 years ago.
So I think it's a great thing for Adrian Autry.
I think it's a great thing for Jim.
Beehime, he just bought a $4 million house out at Skinny Atlas, which is a beautiful place outside of
Syracuse.
And I didn't like the way the whole thing went down, but Jim Beehime doesn't care.
Like, you know, Shoshchewski had to have the Love Me tour.
We just saw the Love Me tour with Derek Carter.
Love Me. Tell me how much you love me.
Blah, blah, blah, blah, blah.
That's never been Behan.
And I've gotten to know him over the years.
He was awesome to my wife when she was a softball coach there at Syracuse.
Doug.
In fact, he walked into my wife's office, she didn't know who he was.
But long story short, he doesn't need fanfare.
He doesn't need attention.
He just, he just is always for 58 years, been a Syracuse guy, 47 years, as the head coach.
And I'm not sure whether he wanted to go out that way or not, but it's the best career, in my opinion, any coach or player has ever had at one school.
And, you know, we'll all move on to the next thing.
and the archery will have a great opportunity.
It's how I look at it.
The North Carolina thing
looked like a fairy tale last year, right?
Huber Davis takes over,
does things a little differently,
you know,
than the traditional Carolina way
in terms of how they played.
And at mid-season, it was a mess.
But by the end of the year,
though they lost a 15-point lead,
they played for a national championship,
and they beat Duke twice, you know,
in the last month of the season, right?
They couldn't have been back.
Then they all, outside of Brady Manic, they all come back.
They're preseason number one.
And I don't know if they take an NIT birth, but they're not going the NCAA tournament.
What happens now at Carolina?
Well, it's going to be interesting because, you know, it's really funny, Doug, and you'll appreciate this, man.
I'm here people tell me, well, you know, Jerry Stackhouse should be the tone.
I'm like, wait a second.
Dude, Herbert Davis is number one, the best representative of the university.
Maybe they've ever had a number two.
And you know, you know, Hubert.
At number two, they just played for a national championship.
So that's the world of coaching as we know it.
But I will say this.
I did the show, and I said, I think what happened last year with Carolina was fools goal from this standpoint.
If you really look at it, I know you do.
They hit a bunch of tough shots last year, man.
And then when it got a little bit sexy, Brady Manick, an older guy coming in from Oklahoma,
would get it done kind of towards the end.
They didn't have Manick.
They had a bunch of guys that went through a year where, man, you're a hero.
Man, I can't believe the run.
Man, Carolina's back.
Man, you're great.
Man, the NIL money is massive.
And all of a sudden, now you've got to go play.
Look, I've been a part of the year after two national championships.
One as a player, I came in after Isaiah and then one as a coach, 88 after.
I tell you what, man, it is hard.
on a campus that loves basketball
to get players to understand
how hard it is to win
after great success. Like he's smart,
everybody knows him for hitting a
you know, a jump shot to win the national championship
against Syracuse. He won any good at all the next year. We lost the rich.
It's just so hard. And then you add
NIL money into it. And then you add the jealousy
that's caused by that. And
again, I go back to play on the court.
they hit unbelievable tough shot last year for two weeks straight in the NCAA tournament.
And as you said, they turned the season around, but you can't do that over the course of the year,
and you can't do that if you're not totally focused.
Last thing, you know what really kind of blanked me off though, Doug?
And I'm curious your thought on this.
I think it was Baycott or one of those guys was whining about the expectations.
Well, y'all put these expectations on us.
Wait a second.
You guys play at North Carolina where there's every,
great player in the history of basketball is in the rafters there. You've got unbelievable
money coming your way from NIL. And, oh, by the way, you want to be treated like pros and
you want to be treated like men. Well, men have expectations. You're expected to do your radio
show every day. My Uncle Jerry was expected to be a steel mill every day for 41 years. I want to hear
about modern players' expectations and how hard they were. I think that's a load of crap, and I think
it was a little window into how soft this year's North Carolina team was.
I think, I agree.
I also think it's a snapshot, though, into this curious place we're in in college athletics.
You know, you combined the NIL money where you have boosters have always felt empowered
if they're allowed, you know, to back in the illegal days by kids.
Yeah.
Yeah, right?
It gives, it takes away the power from the coach, okay, and the leadership ability to coach, and it puts it somewhere else.
Now that's a real thing.
Players play for the coach, the collective, and then on some levels themselves, right?
And then you also, let's be honest, you add in the gambling element where now legally in many states, people are gambling on these games.
The energy and expectations of kids is completely different, whereas previously,
We were kind of in a fairy tale world of college athletics where, yeah, a lot of this stuff, a lot of this stuff went on.
But we still said, well, they're just kids, right?
They're just kids.
It happens.
Right.
It's just a kid.
That stuff is gone.
People wanted this brave new world of guys getting compensated.
Here it is.
And it's changed things dramatically.
There's no doubt.
I didn't know.
How about this?
I missed a free throw late against Kansas State on national TV.
My freshman year.
My uncle called me complaining that it was a push.
I had made a free throw.
everybody would have won the bet.
I said, don't ever call me again.
Like, hey, don't ever call me again.
I thought his wire was tapped.
But no, you're exactly right.
And particularly when you have a group of guys that probably,
if you really talk to them, whether it was Leaky Black or whoever, you know,
Baycott, whatever, all felt like they were the guy last year during the run to the NCAA tournament.
And when you feel like you're the guy, what do you want?
You want the money, right?
And I don't care what it.
anybody tells me. Human nature is a mother. And we hear all these stories, you know, there's
some stories about, you know, Anthony Leal at Indiana. He got his A-L-L-L money and he bought his
sister's student loans off. Yeah, that's great. And those are wonderful. And those are
fantastic people doing that. But those are outliers. There's nobody in the world. And I talk to
assistant coaches all the time. There's nobody in the world that can't tell me that this affects
different locker rooms.
This affects the chemistry.
Some are good. Some are great.
Everybody's getting fat and everybody's getting happy.
But I'd be hard-pressed to believe that at least Carolina's case
and maybe Kentucky's case and that kind of stuff hasn't crept in.
WD, you're the best.
Talk to you soon on your show.
Thanks so much for being part of this one.
Thanks, Doug.
Anytime, man.
You do a great job.
See you, buddy.
All right.
That's Dan Dockich, of course, from Outkick, long-time college basketball coach,

Do you remember when Diana Ross
double-tap Little Kim's boobs at the VMAs?
Or when Kanye said that George Bush didn't like black people.
I know what you're thinking.
What the hell does George Bush got to do with Little Kim?
Well, you can find out on the Look Back at a podcast.
I'm Sam Jette.
And I'm Alex English.
Each episode, we pick it here, unpack what went down, and try to make sense of how we survived it.
Including a recent episode with Mark Lamont Hill waxing all about crack in the 80s.
To be clear, 84 is big to me, not just because of crack.
I'm down to talk about crack on day, but just so y'all know.
I mean, at this point, Mark, this is the second episode where we've discussed crack.
So I'm starting to see that there's a through line.
We also have AIDS on the table right now.
They're finishing that sentence.
I don't think there's a more important year for black people.
Really?
Yeah.
For me, it's one of the most important years for black people in American history.

Doug Gottlie, been for Colin.
This is The Hurt.
Fox Sports Radio, IHeart Radio app.
So Michael Lombardi was on with Pat McAfee.
This is going back to, what, yesterday, the day before?
and he said like, look, the Rams are going to deny it,
but they've been calling people offering up Matt Stafford in a trade.
Less need told the athletic yesterday that they are definitely going to rely on Matthew.
He's definitely one of our pillars.
That this is not a rebuild because they aren't bulldozing the house down
and have weight-bearing walls like Stafford, Cooper Cup, and Aaron Donald to remodel around.
I love the remodeling analogy, right?
I love it.
So when you when you rebuild a house, when you redo the house, right, they're not taking it down to the studs.
They're just going to redo it, right?
And they're going to redo it around what their, your location, your layout, your kitchen and bathrooms, right?
That's basically what it is.
The problem is, like, Matt Stafford makes it, is owed a crazy amount of money.
He had a back issue, like a spinal cord issue, and now an elbow issue, which we heard about before the season last year, and it's become a major problem since.
Cooper Cup, hurt again.
Unbelievable player.
Like, if we want to go with all-time great Super Bowl performances, Cooper Cup being the only guy to throw to on the final game-winning drive of the Rams, I mean, it's in any conversation, right?
and Aaron Donald who for two consecutive years has had a legit discussion about retiring.
It's like I love the analogy, but I'm not buying it for one second.
Then you factor in that Sean McVeigh has, for two consecutive seasons, talked about going into TV.
I mean, what more do you need to tell you that the Rams would like to do what the times would like to do what the
Titans appear to be doing, which is, you guys, we've got to sell out these pieces and start over.
You know, sell out these pieces and start over.
It doesn't mean Aaron Donald wasn't great.
It doesn't mean Matt Stafford wasn't great.
Doesn't mean Cooper Cup wasn't great and can't still, he still has plenty of time.
It's just the idea that those are your pillars when one has openly discussed retiring.
The other, it's been discussed his potential desire to retire, not being Stafford.
the other ones had a couple of catastrophic injuries.
Yikes.
Yikes.
Yikes.
Yikes.
Yeah.
We're going to stick with Matt Stafford because we don't have anybody who wants to take that
contract off our hands.
And I look, I get what Colin has said about being aggressive and going for it.
But there are far more stories of teams going for it and failing than teams going for it
and succeeding.
and when you go for it and you succeed sometimes.
There's this idea like, well, everybody in the NFL would go for a,
would love to win a Super Bowl.
I think so.
But if the price was last year's disaster and this year feels like an impending disaster
and no ability to dig yourself out of it and rebuild with draft picks
because they don't actually exist, that feels hard to believe.
It's a great question.
It's the, would you rather be?
the Niners.
And the Niners, on some level, went for it last year.
I'm going again, Christian McCaffrey.
But would you be the Niners who haven't won a Super Bowl in this decade?
Okay.
In the last 10 years, they've won one.
But they've been competitive seemingly every year.
Obviously, the Garoppolo year when he first came over, they weren't, you know,
and the year he got hurt, they weren't.
I don't know, you pick a team.
Would you rather be consistently competitive and build for a long-term, long run of
10 years in the playoffs or do what the Rams have done,
which is win-one and now just put out fire after fire after fire
and struggle to even rebuild.
Yeah, they're going to build around their kitchen.
The kitchen's dated.
The location isn't as good as it used to be.
And the lot may have a septic leak.
Coming up next, what agents are saying about why Lamar Jackson is in his situation.
That's next. I'm Doug Goddap, but this is a hurt.
