Starting point is 00:00:00 This is an I-Heart podcast. Guaranteed Human. Another podcast from some SNL, late-night comedy guy, not quite. Unhumor me with Robert Smygel and friends. Me and hilarious guests from Bob Odenkirk to David Letterman help make you funnier. This week, my guest, SNL's Mikey Day and head writer, Streeter Seidel, help an a cappella band with their between songs banter.
Starting point is 00:00:23 Where does your group perform? We do some retirement homes. Those people are starving for banter. Listen to humor me with Robert Smigel and friends on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Imagine an Olympics where doping is not only legal, but encouraged. It's the enhanced games. Some call it grotesque.
Starting point is 00:00:42 Others say it's unleashing human potential. Either way, the podcast's Superhuman documented it all, embedded in the games and with the athletes for a full year. Within probably 10 days, I'd put on 10 pounds. I was having trouble stopping the muscle growth. Listen to Superhuman on the IHard Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Hey, what's good, y'all? You're listening to Learn the Hard Way with your favorite therapist and host, Kear Games.
Starting point is 00:01:10 This space is about black men's experiences, having honest conversations that it's really not safe to have anywhere, but you're having them with a licensed professional who knows what he's doing. How many men carry a suit or armor? It signals to the world that you're not to be played with. And just because you have the capability that does not mean that you need to. Listen and learn the hard way on the AHA radio app, Apple Podcast, or wherever you get your podcast. A win is a win. A win is a win. I don't care what you're saying.
Starting point is 00:01:39 Yep, that's me, Cliver Taylor the 4th. You might have seen the skits, my basketball and college football journey, or my career in sports media. Well, now I'm bringing all of that excitement to my brand new podcast, The Clifford Show. This is a place for raw, unfiltered conversation. with athletes, creators, and voices that not only deserve to be heard, but celebrated. So let's get to it. Listen to the Clifford show on the IHeard Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcast. And for more behind the scenes, follow at Clifford and at TikTok podcast network on TikTok.
Starting point is 00:02:11 Thanks for listening to The Heard podcast. Be sure to catch us live every weekday from 12 to 3 Eastern, 9 to noon Pacific on Fox Sports Radio and FS1. Find your local station for the herd at Fox SportsRadio.com or stream us live every day on the iHeart Radio app by searching Herd. We're listening to Fox Sports Radio. Oh, it's hour two. It's flying by. It is moving
Starting point is 00:02:38 at work speed. Live in Los Angeles, it's called The Herd. Fox Sports Radio FS1, here we are. I've got a new haircut. Joy doesn't, but it still looks fabulous. It's great to have you in Mark Slayer with him about five minutes. In Denver. So, yesterday, Joy,
Starting point is 00:02:56 At the end of the show, I was really, I found this tedious. I like lists. Yes. I'm very much, all time. Yeah, you are very, very bothered by this list. Yeah. Yeah, I like all time lists, all time. Like that, I like this stuff.
Starting point is 00:03:08 It's what I'm into. So the athletic is a subscription service with a bunch of sports riders, right? And they ranked every offense, one to 32. I found it so outrageous. They had Kansas City won in Washington 32. Outside of that, it was, I thought it was a mess. how in God's name they could have Cleveland at 18, which is the Noah's Ark of the NFL. They got two of everything.
Starting point is 00:03:32 They got Tennessee at nine. What? Ryan Tanyl. They have Seattle five. Seattle has the 28th ranked offense. Rashad Penny at running back's been a bust. And if not, basically Seattle's offense, which looks like a 1984 offense is we're bait, water is coming on to the ship. Russell, bail it, and get us to the end zone.
Starting point is 00:03:57 So I am going to present, before I get to Mark Schlarith, to me, the 10 best offenses, a very redeemable list here. Let's just go one through 10. Let's start. These are the 10 best offenses in the NFL. Let's not even argue about Kansas City. Number one. Okay.
Starting point is 00:04:13 Not only is Andy Reid, the best schematic guy in the NFL along with Sean Peyton, they had the number one scoring offense for their skill people made the Pro Bowl. Patrick Mahomes, as a baby, had the highest pass rating in the league history and the most passing yards per game in NFL history. 303. This is it. This is like the greatest show on turf, but way more talented. Let's not argue over this. Number two.
Starting point is 00:04:39 Number two. The Ravens. Listen, they ran for 3,300 yards. That was the most in the NFL. They're the first team since 1950 in a passing league to throw for over 200 yards a game and to rush on average for over 200 yards a game. And by the way, the critics of Lamar Jackson, here's all you need to know.
Starting point is 00:04:58 Not in the first half of the season. When everybody's seen film on him, in the second half of the season, the final eight games, you know what he was? 25 TDs, one pick, pass-a-rating 130. He's getting better, folks.
Starting point is 00:05:11 He's not getting worse. Number three. There's a drop-off now, and it goes to the Saints. It's K.C. Baltimore. Saints don't throw the ball deep down field because the Drew Breeze has limitations throwing the ball.
Starting point is 00:05:21 But they were the third. highest scoring offense. Michael Thomas is hard to cover. They added Emmanuel Sanders, who's a savvy smart veteran who will step right in and make 75 catches. I like their offensive line a lot. And again, like Kansas City schematically, they're kind of on a different level. Number four.
Starting point is 00:05:40 I don't even know how you dispute this. Tampa. And I think they may be better, but I just don't know if they'll be better early. So I'll give it to New Orleans at three. They have the best receiving core in the league. Chris Godwin and Mike Evans. I think they have the best tight-in group in the league. I thought they were thin at running back, and they drafted it, and they addressed it.
Starting point is 00:05:57 They also solved right tackle. Gronk, maybe one of the best blocking tight ends in football, so he'll be terrific in the red zone, and Bruce Ariens will challenge Tom to air it out. I like him a lot. Number five. I put San Francisco five. They run with ease. It's a Kyle Shanahan offense.
Starting point is 00:06:16 It's really a run offense masquerading as an explosive pass offense. second highest scoring team in the league at 29.9 points a game. They have added left tackle Trent Williams, who is, believe it or not, an upgrade over Joe Staley. Brandon Iuke is a first round wide receiver who is wild explosive out of Arizona State. And listen, for all you Garoppolo critics, slow down. He's the only quarterback to rank top five in completion percentage, passing yards per attempt, and passing touchdowns. Garopolo's fine. The issue to this team is secondary, is reliable.
Starting point is 00:06:50 liability at wide receiver. It's not quarterback. Number six. Cleveland. Folks, where's the hole? I mean, at this point, it's Baker because Nick Chubbs, probably the most underrated running back. They upgraded at tight end and they were already good with David and Joku. Now they have Austin Hooper from Atlanta. Jarvis Landry is a monster volume receiver. Odell Beckham is finally healthy, and they solved their tackle issue.
Starting point is 00:07:20 also have J.C. Tredderate Guard, who I think is way above average. This is a Pro Bowl offense. This is nothing but stars. And if Baker can be a slightly more coachable, a little less ad-libbing, it can be a play-action pass offense over a pass-first offense. They could set records. This is going to be the best offense in the history of Cleveland Brown football. Number seven. You may be surprised. I think the Raiders' offensive line is probably the most underrated in football. It's a really good offensive line. The Raiders, rookie last year. They're rookies. We're number one in scrimmage yards,
Starting point is 00:07:55 scrimmage touchdowns, rushing yards, catches, and sacks. This is a very young team. Derek Carr is somewhere near top 10 to top 12 quarterbacks. They also went and got Henry Ruggs, the speed receiver. Keep your eye on the Raiders. Number eight. Cowboys. Dack can drive me crazy and the offensive line is getting older. But you may have the potential for 3,000 yards.
Starting point is 00:08:20 wide receivers. Michael Gallup now. Was he a third round pick? Looks like an absolute steel. He's a burner out of Colorado State's become a really nice player. I don't know a ton about tight end, but Mike McCarthy and C.D. Lamb should add juice to an already potent offense. Number nine. Green Bay. Now, there's a drop-off here, but they do have a number one receiver, a top quarterback, and a top running back. And Matt LaFleure is a progressive young offensive coach. PFF also puts their offensive line at number four in the NFL. So before I hear this, wo is me, Aaron doesn't have anything to work with. He's got a great back, a really good offensive line, a star receiver, and a smart young coach.
Starting point is 00:08:58 Number 10. Philadelphia. Carson Wentz had to carry deck chairs last year at the end of the year, but Wentz was the first quarterback with 4,000 passing yards ever, despite not having a single receiver catch over 500 yards. It shows you the immense talent. I also think Doug Peterson and Wentz, they really work. well together. Doug is really clever.
Starting point is 00:09:20 Offensive line, hopefully it's not patchwork like it was last year, but those are your top 10 offense. Russell Wilson saving the Seahawks bacon every third down is not a great offense. It's a great player in an offense. Mark Schlarith is now
Starting point is 00:09:36 joining us, my friend, three Super Bowl rings, multiple time pro-Boulder, Washington, Denver for a year, Schlerth and Evans. That's Denver Radio, Baby, highest-rended show. So, want to talk about this. I said that I think Baltimore, I don't ever remember saying this. Even with the Welker Moss Patriots, I don't ever remember saying that team could go 16 and no. So first of all, I think teams that bring back the same quarterback, mostly the same personnel,
Starting point is 00:10:02 same coach, same system, have a big advantage this year. But Baltimore is two things, Mark, and I think they're jet fuel. They're stacked and they're pissed. They've been humiliated at the end of last year. Lamar's an MVP and everybody still doubts him. I want you to go back to your career. Was there ever a team in Denver? Because you were on a couple of great teams that you honestly thought in camp, if we get lucky here, we could be a 16 and 0 team. That part never crossed my mind. I knew we were good. I started in Washington in 1991 on an 11 and 0 team before we lost our first game. We went on to win the Super Bowl. I started in Denver in 1998 on a 13 and 0 team before we lost our first game. I think one of the things you have to understand
Starting point is 00:10:48 When you sit in those meetings, going undefeated is never a team goal. When you put your goal charts up there, your goal charts are, you know, to win to the vision, to get a first round by, to all these different things. But going 16 and 0 is never anybody's intention. The Baltimore Ravens are a really interesting group. You mentioned Lamar Jackson. He's such a unique player. He's so different.
Starting point is 00:11:13 And that offense, the way they run that offense, that offense, I like to call it. a heavy spread. And the way they run it, nobody has really truly figured out how to defend it. And you're always getting an extra guy and extra two guys to the front side.
Starting point is 00:11:29 So when I watch them film-wise, I cut the film in half. Like I say, okay, let's cut this film in half and divide it right and left. And what they end up doing on a consistent basis through motion, through shifting,
Starting point is 00:11:41 is they end up getting, if you've got four guys on that side, they'll find a way to get five or six guys to block your four guys. and then they'll have Lamar Jackson do Lamar Jackson things. It's incredible.
Starting point is 00:11:52 And the play action stuff that comes off that is absolutely amazing. How many times he throws it to a wide open receiver who's one-on-one beating the coverage down the scene, whatever the case may be. So yes, he's gotten incredibly, he's gotten better and exponentially better from when he first came in. But that system is perfect for the way they want to run Lamar Jackson and his skill set. So absolutely amazing what they've been able to do in Baltimore. But 16 and 0, I don't think anybody ever sits there and goes, man, we've got a chance to go 16 and 0. You know, it's interesting. There was a story.
Starting point is 00:12:27 Jay Glazer and his mailbag for the athletic was talking about Aaron Rogers in Green Bay and the Jordan Love pick. And I'll read you a quote here. He said, you know, they went up and got Jordan Love. They did nothing to upgrade. I think maybe just Aaron has worn thin on them. Aaron Rogers, it's like they're setting them up. Sometimes you just get fatigue with somebody. They might have Aaron Rogers fatigue.
Starting point is 00:12:50 And listen, Aaron is a California guy that's really smart and he's cocky. You played with John Elway. He's a California guy really smart. And John could be cocky, right? Sure. Is there a difference, though? Did Elway, when you were playing with him? Did he wear out coaches?
Starting point is 00:13:07 Did he, I mean, you tell me how that, I mean, because Aaron's got a lot of John's qualities, the super arm, the California kid, the big brain, outside. spoken can rub people the wrong way. Yeah, John never had that about him. John didn't rub people the wrong way. One thing about John that just made him unique is in the world's eyes, he had been given the right to be a prima donna, but he never took it.
Starting point is 00:13:30 You know, I mean, if he was going to run up, the team was running, he was running with the team. I remember one time we're lifting and we're doing this ridiculous leg press machine where our strength coach Rich Tootin was leaning on the machine. It was just miserable. Everybody hated doing it. And John is sitting in that,
Starting point is 00:13:45 is sitting in that chair and he's about ready to do his reps and he goes rich you realize that if i refuse to do this i'm still going to make the team right and rich laughed he goes but i'm going to still do it right that's that's who john was so he never really fatigued anybody i will tell you in his last year here in denver and when he retired a guy that had that effect to some degree was patent manning i've talked to people before about patent manning he's such a grinder he's such a perfectionist he makes and it's It's not just with the players, it's with the coaches and everybody else that he just grinds on him. If we're going to do this this way in October, we better do it this way in November, this way in December, and this way in January. So if you're going to say this is how we're going to protect something, you better make it consistent, and you cannot change it from this point forward.
Starting point is 00:14:32 And he will just pester you until he gets it changed the way he wants it changed. And that becomes, that can get, that can wear on you, that can exhaust you. That there is that mental fatigue that comes with it. And I could definitely see Aaron Rogers having some of that about his game and about his personality. So when you play, you know, you had to deal with different offenses and coordinators and Brady goes to Tampa. And it's interesting because he's the old guy and it's a fairly young roster. Do you, how long did it take you if you had fundamental schematic changes or playbook alterations? You got no preseason.
Starting point is 00:15:11 You got no OTAs. I mean, it's a funny time, Mark. Should we expect Tampa to be bumpy with Brady in September early October? I think there's probably a learning curve, and it's not so much the offense. I mean, if you really look at offensive plays, everybody runs the same stuff. Like, what they're doing in Los Angeles with the Rams is the same stuff they're doing exactly the same place that they're running in San Francisco. In San Francisco, they do it out of two. and three tied ends with a full back, two backs, you know, whatever the case may be,
Starting point is 00:15:46 22 personnel, 12 personnel, 13 personnel, where in Los Angeles they're doing it all out of 13 or, excuse me, all out of 11 personnel, all of 10 personnel. So schematically, it's the exact same place. It's just different personnel groupings. So a lot of the things you're going to run are exactly the same things that you've been running. They may be called something different, but they're the exact same kind of group of plays are set up plays. It's just a matter of what your coach likes
Starting point is 00:16:16 versus what you like, the way you like things called the red zone, versus the way he likes things called the red zone. There is going to be that learning curve where Tom Brady and Bruce Ariens are going to have to come together and say, hey, listen, Bruce, I really like these three things in this situation. I hate this thing
Starting point is 00:16:32 that you love. And here's why. And they're going to have to come to some type of an agreement. But for the most part, call them all offenses run a lot of the same principles in the passing game, a lot of the same principles in the running game. It's the nuance that's different. And that's what they're going to figure out, the nuance of these things. That's why it's going to be a little slower in the beginning.
Starting point is 00:16:52 But eventually they'll figure out exactly what they both like. So you won three Super Bowls, and I want to talk about training camp following each of your Super Bowl. So Kansas City's having parades. They're drinking champagne. Did Camp feel a little different, Mark? the three times you came into camp with a trophy. Yeah, absolutely.
Starting point is 00:17:18 It felt different in that you were the world champions. And there's a different pressure on you to defend. And, you know, when you walk into camp where it used to be fairly sparse, as far as fans are concerned, as far as national media are concerned, all of a sudden, you know, every national face in the media is at your camp. So there's a difference there. Of course, with this pandemic and everything being shut down, Kansas City isn't having that same amount of scrutiny or that same amount of people that they have to contend with that are following them.
Starting point is 00:17:50 Obviously, it's out there in social media. It's out there in doing what we do for a living. But the bottom line is they're not inundated with it, which is an advantage because you don't have to answer all those questions. You don't have to answer the questions. Can you go undefeated? Can you guys top what you did on offense last year? You know, whatever the questions are. And so to me, that's a decided advantage for Kansas City going into this, you know, repeat mode,
Starting point is 00:18:17 trying to repeat as the world champions. Obviously, there's a lot of pressure on you when you are being chased versus when you're chasing. And that's something from a maturity standpoint that you have to deal with, that you have to contend with. You're everybody, on everybody's schedule, you're the target. On everybody's schedule, you're their Super Bowl, even when they're not very good. and you'll get into games where, you know, you're far better than the team you're playing against, and the next thing you know, you're going into overtime scrapping to try to get a win. So that's the kind of scrutiny or that's the kind of pressure that gets put on you
Starting point is 00:18:51 because everybody else is measuring their team. What might we become if we do things right? Every time they play you, they're measuring, they're using you as the measuring stick for their franchise. So there's a lot of pressure, and you're getting everybody's best shot every weekend. By the way, you have the nicest lawn of anybody I've ever known or worked with. Have you worked on your lawn today yet? Today, I have, yes, I have. I've done some spot watering on my lawn and some places that I'm not happy with the, I call it being hydrophobic.
Starting point is 00:19:29 There's a couple of places that just seem to be a little bit afraid of water right now. So I'm trying to nurture those back to proper health. And that takes time and commitment and energy. So, yes, I have been in my yard. Yeah, that you've never seen. If you follow Mark Schlereth on social media, he has the most, he is, he likes gardening. My mom was British, so she grew up in a wet climate. My mom loved gardening.
Starting point is 00:19:55 So I just followed my mom as a kid around the garden. And if I, Schleroth would have been my dad, which is a frightening scenario, it would have been the same life. So go to check out his social media. He is on his lawn all. day and it's great seeing you, Mark. Yeah, well, it's good to see you as well, Colin. And right after this, I'm going to take this shirt off and get back in my lawn because the ladies love it. Mark Schlereth.
Starting point is 00:20:22 Coming up next, oh, a story that just depressed me, and I know that's an awful tease, but that's coming up next. One more herd? The herd streams 24 hours a day, seven days a week within the I-Hard radio app. Search Herd to listen live or on-demand whenever. you'd like. Imagine an Olympics where doping is not only legal but encouraged. It's the enhanced games. Some call it grotesque. Others say it's unleashing human potential. Or when Kanye said that George Bush didn't like black people. I know what you're thinking.
Starting point is 00:22:20 What the hell does George Bush got to do with Little Kim? Well, you can find out on the Look Back at it podcast. I'm Sam J. And I'm Alex English. Each episode, we pick it here, unpack what went down, and try to make sense of how we survived it. Including a recent episode with Mark Lamont Hill, waxing all about crack in the 80s.
Starting point is 00:22:37 To be clear, 84 is big to me, not just because of crack. I'm down to talk about crack all day, but just so y'all know. I mean, at this point, Mark, this is the second episode where we've discussed crack, so I'm starting to see that there's a through line. We also have AIDS on the table right now. Thank you for finishing that sentence. I don't think there's a more important year for black people. Really?
Starting point is 00:23:00 Yeah. For me, it's one of the most important years for black people in American history. Listen to look back at it on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts or wherever you get your podcasts. Welcome to my new podcast, Learn the Hardway with me, your host, and your favorite therapist, Keer Games. And in recognition of Mental Health Awareness Month, I'm bringing over a decade of my own experience in the mental health field and conversations with so many incredible guests.
Starting point is 00:23:24 I'm talking, Tripp Fontaine, Ryan Clark. Sometimes when we're in the pursuit of the thing, we get so wrapped up in the chase that we don't realize that we are in possession of the thing. and we're still chasing it and we don't know when we've done enough because people scoreboard watch. Life becomes about wins and losses. Steve Burns, Dustin Ross,
Starting point is 00:23:46 because you find it important to be a good person while you hear on earth, or are you a good person because you're afraid? Because that's two different intentions, bro. Absolutely. And that's two different levels of trust. I want you to just really be a good person. Join me, Kear Gaines,
Starting point is 00:23:59 is we have real conversations about healing, growth, fatherhood, pressure, and purpose on my new podcast. Learn the hard way. Open your free iHeartRadio app. Search Learn the hard way and listen now. Tonight, Thursday night baseball on Fox has Chris Bryant and the Cubs taking on the Royals, or you may see Jose Altoube and the Astros Battle the Diamondbacks.
Starting point is 00:24:20 Coverage begins at 7 Eastern on Fox on the Fox Sports app. Check local listings for the game in your area. Oh, this was depressing. According to Dr. Brian Sutterer, Zion Williamson is just frankly in a race against his own body. He goes on to say if you watch his Duke highlights compared to now his athleticism and his conditioning have regressed substantially. In my opinion, he's less explosive, less condition, slower on defense. He's already lost a portion of his meniscus from his knee.
Starting point is 00:24:58 He's under close monitoring. It's not right. He's in a race against his own body. He went on to say, nobody wants to talk about it, to which I would say, Doug Gottlieb and Chris Broussard did on my show this week. His body concerns me. You know, he cannot play long stretches now. He cannot play long, you know, consecutive games without getting hurt previously in his career.
Starting point is 00:25:24 Happened to Duke, happened to Summer League, happened earlier in the NBA. Now, I know there are people in the league, people in that organization who feel like his size, his strength, his girth is a big part of his effectiveness. But I look at his history. I look at NBA history. And I say this guy's got to drop 30 to 40 pounds to say healthy. Sometimes we have these athletes and you see him fairly regularly. They are what I would call enjoy it while it lasts athletes.
Starting point is 00:25:56 I always felt that with John Daly, his lifestyle, his body, enjoy it while it last. honestly, Tiger Woods had some of that. Tiger Woods was the first golfer ever that when analysts talked about him used the word torque. Torque is a word they used to sell trucks. Usually you'll watch a guy swing, then they'll show it in slow-mo.
Starting point is 00:26:20 And some guy named Peter, who's a broadcaster with an accent, where it would say, oh, the tempo is lovely. He stays within himself. It's a slow hip turn. Oh, I love how he keeps his, shifts his body.
Starting point is 00:26:32 body weight. Tiger was coming out of his shoes. Tiger didn't suffer like, you know, back injuries like golfer. He suffered major injuries. He was breaking stuff. Sandy Kofax, arm issues, six great years of a prime. Yao Ming, seven foot six, three durable years, fell apart, issues by 25. There are just certain athletes, enjoy them while they last. I had a discussion a lunch about a year ago when Zion was still in college. And I was discussing this with an executive. And he said, listen, he goes, you know, I'm not going to say this publicly, but like, there's a joint issue.
Starting point is 00:27:18 This is not a 17-year career body. He is so violent in his, is the way he plays and the way he explodes. you know, this is just not going to go 17 years. It's just, and by the way, hurt in high school, hurt at Duke, hurt in Summer League, hurt this year, and now minute limits. So it's kind of depressing, but let's just enjoy it while it's really fun. Joy Taylor with the news.
Starting point is 00:27:44 No, no, no, no, turn on the news. This is the herd line news. Well, let's just keep talking about knee injuries, shall we? Oh, boy. Ben Simmons left yesterday's game against the Wizards late in the third quarter with a knee injury. Simmons official diagnosis is reportedly a partial dislocation
Starting point is 00:28:04 of the left kneecap. There was no ligament damage shown on the MRI, but he is listed as out and treatment options are being discussed. This is really bad news for the 76ers, obviously. They beat the Wizards 107.98. He had 8.6 rebounds and four assists
Starting point is 00:28:21 in 23 minutes before the injury. That doesn't look good. I mean, look at that walk. Yes. I dislocated my my left knee and tore my ACL. Obviously, I'm not saying that's what happened here. Obviously, we know that's not what happens because he doesn't have any ligament damage. But this is kind of one of those situations where... Season's over.
Starting point is 00:28:41 I mean, I'm not a doctor, and I'm not Ben Simmons and not a member of the 76thous organization, but he is out and looking at options. I mean, if you're in this situation, what do you do? Because he's going to have to rest at the very least. So they're going to be in the playoffs very soon. I wouldn't. Do you rush him back? Oh, God, I would know.
Starting point is 00:28:59 I mean, I just, he's an asset. You're not, you know. I feel like after we, what we saw from Kevin Durant, that is not an option when you're in a situation like that. No question that previous actions can dictate later decisions. Do you not want to force a situation with an injury of that magnitude when you dislocate your knee? There are two and one, the bubble in the sixth seed in the east, one game behind the Pacers for the fifth seed. So Ravens wide receiver market. Heist Brown, Hollywood Brown, made some big changes to his body to prepare for his second NFL season.
Starting point is 00:29:31 We're talking a lot about injuries and body changes on today's show. At the end of last season, he weighed 157 pounds. During quarantine, he added 23 pounds of muscle. That doesn't even make sense. He is now weighing in at 180 pounds, and he says he feels 100 times better than he did last year. Now, obviously, he is a very fast receiver as well. And slight until apparently now. Very slight, but this is interesting.
Starting point is 00:29:59 While he was gaining weight, because obviously the first thing that you think of when you think of a speedy, Y receiver gave him to 23 pounds is that that's going to affect your speed and quickness. But he was using a GPS tracker sent to him by the Ravens to monitor his speed as he built the muscle. That's interesting. So if he was putting on too much muscle in one area and slowing his speed down, he could change how he was working out. Boy, you just don't want no, you don't want any part of the Ravens this year. Isn't it, it's pretty remarkable that he was out there playing at 157 pounds, considering he is going up against defensive players that weigh 100 pounds more than him.
Starting point is 00:30:34 Yeah, it is. But you know what? He runs a lot of deep routes so that he runs past them. And still getting hit by them. That helps. If you're fast on them, you don't have to worry about it. But I just, I think it's really, it makes me happy when I hear stories about people that have taken this time off. I mean, obviously this was his off season anyway, but he wasn't in camp and was in, you know,
Starting point is 00:30:54 quarantine like everyone else to take time to focus and make huge changes that will benefit you in the long term like this is this is amazing that he was able to do that and it's not like he was in the facility working with team personnel like he did most of this on his own i i just i get emotional talking about young people who overcome stuff or have critics i love these stories yeah me too i think it's great i saw a story the other day ohio state uh player called his dad and told him he was captain and his dad started crying on the phone. It's like, oh my God, I can't. They're so great. Like, I love, there was a horrible thing happened pandemic.
Starting point is 00:31:31 And this player's like, I'm the smallest guy in the league. I'm going to put on 23 pounds of muscle. I love stories like that. I could just every day retweet him. I love stuff like this. And I think it's a great reflection of the culture that the Ravens have, I mean, they've always had, but really have fostered with Lamar Jackson in this current regime. It's because this is what Lamar Jackson did.
Starting point is 00:31:51 And he's the leader. and that is trickled down throughout the whole organization, his attitude and Harbaugh's attitude towards the season and growing every single year and changing your body and taking advantage of time off. It's a reflection of the culture of the Ravens. I'm with you. I think they're very incredibly dangerous team this year.
Starting point is 00:32:10 Finally, the Cowboys have a strong wide receiving group this season, Amari Cooper, Michael Gallup and C.D. Lamb. Cooper even thinks all three of them should pass 1,000 receiving yards in 2020. Possible, very possible. poses the question of where Ezekio Elliott would fit into that past heavy offense. Yeah, that's right. That's good question. But he shut down anywhere.
Starting point is 00:32:29 He's about not getting enough carries. Edwarder was a little skeptical of how, you know, how Zeke was going to fit into all that. He said, we're we all going to eat. Don't start to start that messy bleep. But, you know, he used a poop emoji instead. Well, McCarthy's reputation was not on the ground game. He puts it on the quarterback. So Zeke's saying, don't.
Starting point is 00:32:51 start that messy crap. Well, they would be the sixth team to have three 1,000 yard receivers. It's really not that far-fetched that this would happen. No, I mean, they almost did it last year. Yeah, and I mean, Gallops a steal and Amari will get his. And C.D. Lamb, because they have a good offensive line, C.D. Lamb's going to get lots of. He's going to do a lot of underneath stuff. And nobody knows, you know, he's fresh. He's new. So you don't know much about him. Not a lot of scouting tape on C.D. So C.D. should start the season. pretty quickly. You know, that division is very interesting because
Starting point is 00:33:25 we really don't know what the Giants are going to be this year. We pretty much assume that the Washington football team is going to struggle a little bit. If things don't go well for the Eagles... There you go. And then things turn up for DAC. You can end up getting that contract after all.
Starting point is 00:33:41 No, he'll... We'll just see. I'm interested to see it. I'm not rooting either way. I think the franchise tag is smart, but I'm not rooting... No, I'm not rooting either either. I mean, I think he obviously deserves was a contract. It's not that he wasn't offered a contract. Right. I just, that division is always tricky and
Starting point is 00:33:57 the way that the Eagles finished it last year, it's just a lot up in the air. I'm really interested to see how that turns out. Joy with the news. Well, that's the news. And thanks for stopping by. The Hurd Lie News. Time for another edition of Collins' random observation. During the break, I had a fig Newton. I've come to the conclusion. There is no middle ground. You either
Starting point is 00:34:18 love them or hate them. I love them. Joy. There's a baby food. Some have said that. Herm Edwards eats them constantly all day. Random observation. You don't need teeth to eat them. You could just, like, they're baby food. You don't need teeth for cocktails, and I love those. That's true. Those are not for babies. I don't know. I just don't, I don't know. I get it. It's a weird. I had it during the break, and I'm like, because now that you told me you hate them, I had it during the break, and I'm like, it is a weird texture. Yeah, no, you have to really like Fig Newton's eat them. They've got a, they've got to,
Starting point is 00:34:49 If someone offered me Fig Newton's and I'm like in need of a snack, I'm like, it got like a weird outside texture that it's almost like eating a velour shirt with fig inside. It's like you left a good pastry out in the humidity. That's what a fig Newton is. That is funny. Odd but funny. Okay. I like how her mind works. Rob Parker and his mind works differently is joining us next.
Starting point is 00:35:16 Plus Tristan Thompson is joining us. New member of Fox Sports, former Cav, current Cav, somewhere. He's got calves. I don't know. He'll be joining us. Here's the thing about home security companies. They trap you with high prices and sales pitches and tricky contracts and lousy customer service. That is not simply safe.

Do you remember when Diana Ross double-tap Little Kim's boobs at the VMAs? Or when
Starting point is 00:38:09 Kanye said that George Bush didn't like black people. I know what you're thinking. What the hell does George Bush got to do a little Kim? Well, you can find out on the Look Back at it podcast. I'm Sam J. And I'm Alex English. Each episode, we pick a here, unpack what went down, and try to make sense of how we survived it. Including a recent episode with Mark Lamont Hill, waxing all about crack in the 80s.
Starting point is 00:38:32 To be clear, 84 is big to me, not just because of crack. I'm down to talk about crack on day, but just so you all know. I mean, at this point, Mark, this is the second episode where we've discussed, correct. So I'm starting to see that there's a through line. We also have AIDS on the table right now. Thank you finishing that sentence. Yes. I don't think there's a more important year for black people.
Starting point is 00:38:54 Really? Yeah. For me, it's one of the most important years for black people in American history. Listen to look back at it on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Welcome to my new podcast, Learn the Hardway with me, your host, and your favorite things. Careers, Care Games. And in recognition of mental health awareness month, I'm bringing over a decade of my own experience
Starting point is 00:39:15 in the mental health field and conversations with so many incredible guests. I'm talking, Tripp Fontaine, Ryan Clark. Sometimes when we're in the pursuit of the thing, we get so wrapped up in the chase that we don't realize that we are in possession of the thing. And we're still chasing it, and we don't know when we've done enough.
Starting point is 00:39:33 Because people scoreboard watch. Life becomes about wins and losses. Steve Burns, Dustin Ross because you find it important to be a good person while you hear on earth or are you a good person because you're afraid? Because that's two different intentions, bro. Absolutely.
Starting point is 00:39:47 And that's two different levels of trust. I want you to just really be a good person. Join me, Kear Gaines, as we have real conversations about healing, growth, fatherhood, pressure, and purpose on my new podcast, learn the hard way. Open your free iHeartRadio app. Search Learn the Hardway and listen now.
Starting point is 00:40:06 Rob Parker, co-host to the odd couple. Rob Parker treats clothes like Mark Schlerath treats his lawn, obsessed. So Rob Parker is now joining me, co-host of the odd couple. The instigator at FS1. Okay, so the shirt,
Starting point is 00:40:23 how much the shirt cost? This is Ralph Lorenz's shirt. $98.50. Original retail price. $12 off the rack. It's my size, 16 neck, 34, 35. Beautiful, Colin.
Starting point is 00:40:38 No, between the gray and your beard and that shirt, you look a cinematic. You look very good today. So I was, I was, I've made the argument. The Lakers are not a true number one seed because the clippers had Paul George's injury and the Blazers had the Nurkich injury and that this is not a typical Western Conference number one. Everybody was in flux. OKC was a total rebuild. Harden Westbrook got jammed together.
Starting point is 00:41:04 That what we're seeing in the bubble is a truer Western. Western Conference. Everybody's got their issues solved, but the Lakers got to be a number one seed through really a bumpy Western Conference. It's not as good as we think. I agree. It's not as advertised. I know LeBron could beat his chest and say that people thought he couldn't win out West or whatever. But definitely, if you look at just the Clippers, Colin, when they were totally together and full squad, I think they were like 15 and 1. They weren't together all year. And yet they still were only five games behind the Lakers and had won two of the first three meetings against the Lakers even without a full squad.
Starting point is 00:41:49 So I'm with you. I think the Lakers, there's a chance that they could be upset by somebody. They're top heavy, but when you look at the bench and look at the rest of the players, you can't feel that good about the Lakers. You really can't. No, they don't defend the three. And frankly, they generally don't. shoot it particularly well.
Starting point is 00:42:08 You know, it's interesting about the Portland trailblazers get mentioned. I was critical of Mello's entire career, but I will say this. He is a perfect fit. Do you give, what do you make of Mello's resurgence and Portland's opportunity to beat the Lakers? What's the key? Well, I mean, Mello has played well there and, you know, he probably should have been in the league before had he been able to accept a different role a lot of players Colin uh you know fall out
Starting point is 00:42:39 of favor because they're they were the man they want to stay the man and they can't understand when people are looking at them to do different things so i think that's where carmello fell into his issue and now that he's gotten an opportunity back he's played for them so so good for carmello uh you know could they upset the lakers sure they could i'm still kind of you know, bothered by last year, if you remember, the Western Conference Finals were not a pretty sight. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:43:09 Layed an egg after playing pretty well. So I'm not so sure that they will be that team, but can they? Sure they could. I saw Jay Glazer, NFL shift. Jay Glazer said this in his mailbag for the athletic this week. He said he was talking about Jordan Love being drafted by the Packers. He says, I don't get the move.
Starting point is 00:43:29 The only thing I can see is he's, Aaron's worn on the Packers. they're looking to their future. They went up and got Jordan Love. They did nothing to upgrade. It's almost like they're setting up Aaron Rogers to fail. Sometimes you just get fatigued with somebody. And I think Green Bay might have Aaron Rogers fatigue. You buy it?
Starting point is 00:43:49 I think if that's the case, it's the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard. When you put that guy and you can talk about the numbers all you want, Colin, go Google it. He has the best quarterback rating of any quarterback who's played in National Football League. He has the best touchdown the interception ratio of any quarterback
Starting point is 00:44:08 that played in the NFL, and it's not even close. And when you look at that team and what they have been able to do without making big moves, ask Matthew Stafford if he would have liked to have won an NFC North Division title because he hasn't in over a decade
Starting point is 00:44:26 with Aaron Rogers in the way. Ask Minnesota, ask Chicago if they would take Aaron Rogers, whole notion that he's the problem. Go look at their playoff. You want to look at their playoff record and see that four or five of their playoff losses during the Aaron Rogers era came at the, came where the defense gave up 40 or more points.
Starting point is 00:44:48 Do you remember the onside kick in Seattle where the tight end fumbled the onside kick? That was another trip to the Super Bowl. Do you remember that? Yep. Is that Aaron Rogers's fault? I mean, I just, I do not understand. They asked him to be different last year, right?
Starting point is 00:45:03 step back. They wanted to run the football more. He did it. They went 13 and three. They went to the NFC championship game and the defense couldn't stop anybody. I just don't understand what are we talking about? You know, when you get in that blue suit, your anger really pops. Okay. I've never said this before. I think Baltimore has a chance to go 16 and 0 because they're two things. They're stacked and they're ticked off. They were humiliated in the playoffs. Omar still has his critics. They're 0 and 2 against Mahomes.
Starting point is 00:45:37 Everybody says they can't play from behind. This is the first time I ever remember thinking that's a 16 and 0 football team. I looked at their schedule. They don't travel west. Your thoughts? I love the Ravens. I don't know about 16 and 0. Could it be 15 and 1 or 14 and 2 or something like that?
Starting point is 00:45:55 Absolutely. They are the team to beat Colin and the AFC. Not the chefs. I mean the Chiefs. I'm telling you, it's the Ravens. Look, they're loading. And there's a reason that people, the players pick Lamar Jackson as the number one player in the NFL. Look at the season he had, and they haven't figured him out.
Starting point is 00:46:16 I'll get it. The playoffs cover up a lot of stuff. Last year, everybody's Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs are going to win. Go back and look at Patrick Mahomes year. He went from 50 touchdowns to 26. Don't tell me he was injured because Drew Brees played less games. than him and had more touchdowns than Patrick Mahomes. Patrick Mahomes also didn't lead in any of the big offensive categories for NFL
Starting point is 00:46:43 quarterback last year. Do you know that? He didn't lead in one of them. And I think Lamar, because of they went out early in the playoffs, everybody just pooh-pooos them and acts like they're not good. That team beat five teams last year. By 21 or more, they won 12 straight. They beat playoff teams up to 1.
Starting point is 00:47:02 Wazoo. I mean, that team is loaded. Harbaugh's done a great job. I'm picking the Ravens to go to the Super Bowl from the AFC. Any more shopping today for you? As you're always looking for a deal, any more shopping? No, Tuesday's the big shopping day. That's when they usually bring in the new stuff. You've got to go through the racks. Colin, you got to be patient. You got to go through the racks. Look for your size. Don't just buy anything. It's got to be your size. I've never met a guy like Rob Parker. I'm not joking. He lives on $78 and peanut brittle.
Starting point is 00:47:39 That is his budget for the month. It's unbelievable. My friend, it's great to see you. He's got his podcast on my network inside the Parker. He's a Hall of Fame baseball guy. The Yankees look like the best team in the world. Not a surprise. Braves Dodgers very good as well.
Starting point is 00:47:53 Good seeing you, Rob. Always, Colin, enjoy. Take it easy. Yeah, the Aaron Rogers thing, the mailbag. Basically, Glazer just comes out. and it's like, you know, they may have Aaron Rogers fatigue. Here's the reality of it. Some guy, you know, we've all done this.
Starting point is 00:48:07 And I've worked with people like this. Some people just work well over time. They have the kind of personality. Eli Manning, I mean, people felt guilty. Let him go. Like, I mean, literally, Eli Manning, he came from a great family. He created a great family. Some people just, you feel guilty letting them go.
Starting point is 00:48:24 I mean, Eli Manning's last three years were ugly. Steph Curry, to me, is a guy that you could just, you could want them on your team forever. He came from a great family. He create his wife, his kids. He's just got a personality. Aaron's a little snarky, a little cynical. He's Jay Cutler, but way better.
Starting point is 00:48:41 And Chicago lost no sleep, getting rid of Jay Cutler. There are personalities that just kind of work, they're what I would call lubricators and agitators. And I think Aaron's smart and knows it, and sometimes he can agitate. I mean, we've seen publicly, the brother, the dad, the teammate. It's just who he is. Now, I think he's really been incredibly honest and really, I think, done himself very well on the Jordan love stuff.
Starting point is 00:49:11 He's been right up front with it, and I love it. But it is, like there are, we've all worked with people that they last at a company forever, and they may not even be the best employee, but they just, they lubricate everything. You just, they wear well. And there are other people that are super talented, and you feel like they're just kind of short. And by the way, the minute those people show a little crack in their talent or their career or they show a little age. Well, yeah, I mean, that's how it works. But be careful what you wish for.
Starting point is 00:49:41 Right. Right. You could be missing that irritating personality really quickly when you're going, you know, 3 and 13. You know, let's be honest. If you have a top 10 quarterback, you should just keep him until he's not a top 10 quarterback. I mean, that's generally the rule. Aaron's probably somewhere, somewhere between two and six. I mean, you'd love for everything to be perfect, but, I mean, it's Aaron Rogers.
Starting point is 00:50:05 You don't get a lot of employees like the two you're looking at. You don't. A lot of people are needy. You need to be patient and deal with that. That's right. Tristan Thompson, Jason McIntyre, big third hour next. Another podcast from some SNL late-night comedy guy, not quite. Unhumor me with Robert Smygel and friends.
