Starting point is 00:00:00 This is an I-Heart podcast. Guaranteed Human. Another podcast from some SNL, late-night comedy guy, not quite. Unhumor me with Robert Smygel and friends. Me and hilarious guests from Bob Odenkirk to David Letterman help make you funnier. This week, my guest, SNL's Mikey Day and head writer, Streeter Seidel, help an a cappella band with their between songs banter.
Starting point is 00:00:23 Where does your group perform? We do some retirement homes. Those people are starving for banter. Listen to humor me with Robert Smigel and friends on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Imagine an Olympics where doping is not only legal, but encouraged. It's the enhanced games. Some call it grotesque.
Starting point is 00:00:42 Others say it's unleashing human potential. Either way, the podcast's Superhuman documented it all, embedded in the games and with the athletes for a full year. Within probably 10 days, I'd put on 10 pounds. I was having trouble stopping the muscle growth. Listen to Superhuman on the IHard Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. On the Look Back at it podcast.
Starting point is 00:01:06 From 1979, that was a big moment for me. 84 was big to me. I'm Sam J. And I'm Alex English. Each episode, we pick a year, unpack what went down, and try to make sense of how we survived it. With our friends, fellow comedians, and favorite authors. Like Mark Lamont Hill on the 80s.
Starting point is 00:01:22 84 was a wild year. It was a wild year. I don't think there's a more important year for black people. Listen to look back at it on the IHeart radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. A win is a win. A win is a win. I don't care what I'm saying. Yep, that's me, Clifford Taylor the 4th.
Starting point is 00:01:41 You might have seen the skits, my basketball and college football journey, or my career in sports media. Well, now I'm bringing all of that excitement to my brand new podcast, The Clifers Show. This is a place for raw, unfilled conversations with athletes, creators, and voices that not only deserve to be heard, but celebrated. So let's get to it. Listen to the Clifford show on the IHeard Radio app, Apple Podcast, or wherever you get your podcast. And for more behind the scenes,
Starting point is 00:02:06 follow at Clifford and at TikTok podcast network on TikTok. Thanks for listening to The Heard podcast. Be sure to catch us live every weekday from 12 to 3 Eastern, 9 to noon Pacific on Fox Sports Radio and FS1. Find your local station for the herd at Fox Sports Radio.com or stream us live every day on the iHeartRadio app by searching Heard. You're listening to Fox Sports Radio. Ah, here we go. Our number two on a Friday live in Los Angeles, this is The Herd.
Starting point is 00:02:43 Wherever you may be and however you may be listening, Fox Sports Radio, and right here on FS1, Steve Berline, Chris Broussard, T.J. Hushman Zada, loaded today, lots of thoughts. It's kind of a brand new start last night. It was a very good presentation by NBC and the NFL. No complaints. The fog shield, a little weird for Andy Reid. It was getting all fogged up. Couldn't see Andy Reid in there.
Starting point is 00:03:13 I had ribs last night at home in honor of Kansas City and the Chiefs. They were very delicious. And so was the Chief's offense. So football's back, looks, sounds like it always mostly has, right? It was a great night, I thought, for the NFL. It was just, it's just great. I really am so impressed with all the leagues and everything and everyone, The production, coaches, NBC, NFL.
Starting point is 00:03:35 Everyone's done an amazing job. I'm really looking forward to Sunday. All right. Here we go. We're debuting our Blazing Five. I've been doing this for 10, 15 years. Love betting NFL, my favorite sport. We had a rough last month in the NFL, really stunk in the playoffs.
Starting point is 00:03:49 But we were great the year before, so here we go. That's a hot one. Let's Blaze it up. Fire it up. It's Collins, Blazing Fire. Browns at Raven. I rarely swallow over a tournament. touchdown, but I'm going to take Baltimore minus seven and a half. Here's a little interesting thing.
Starting point is 00:04:07 Nobody's worse the last 15 years than the Browns on opening games. Why? Because they're always changing stuff. Oh, wait. They change stuff again. It's a new coaching staff. Cleveland beat Baltimore last year. Baltimore is not overlooking Cleveland. Remember last year, Browns went in and just punched them in the throat, and Baltimore is fully aware of it. Also, not only are the Browns bad in week one, they haven't won since 2005. Their last and wins, point differential and turnover differential. The Ravens led the NFL in rushing, and I believe their rushing game will be better. And this is a testament to John Harbaugh in coaching.
Starting point is 00:04:50 Ravens have held their opponents to 10 points or fewer in the last four season openers. That's what great defensive coaches do all summer. They figure out that opener. I don't like to swallow a lot of points, but I'm taking the Ravens Big 33 to 20. Jets and Bill's. I'll take the Jets plus six and a half and here's why. Josh Allen was bad last year. He's pretty good against Dallas and that's the game you watch, right? But Josh Allen was last in passing yards, passing touchdowns, completion percentage, passing rating among quarterbacks over the last two years with a minimum 25 starts.
Starting point is 00:05:28 He's been bad. The coaching staff is great. He's not been good. He wasn't good as last year at Wyoming. The bills have scored fewer than 20 points in each of their last five games last year, including the playoff loss. Now, I don't like the fact Jamal Adams has gone,
Starting point is 00:05:42 but C.J. Mosley was gone last year, too. Six and a half points when I get the better quarterback, and there's no question. The Jets have upgraded at wide receiver. tied-in and offensive line. Buffalo may win 24-20. Six and a half is way too many points to give the Jets. Buffalo weather won't be an issue.
Starting point is 00:06:04 They've got some new personnel on the outside that I think will be a handful for the bills. Bills win. Love the Jets plus six and a half. Seahawks at Falcons. Like it, I love it. I'll take Atlanta plus two and a half my pick of the weekend. Falcons played really well last year. won their last four, and they won six of their last eight to support their coach.
Starting point is 00:06:26 He may get fired, but they like him. And Matt Ryan has figured out Pete Carroll. They've faced each other seven times. Matt Ryan's five and two, his passer ratings over 100, 16 T's four picks. Matt Ryan's done really well against Pete Carroll defenses, and this is not one of Pete Carroll's great defenses. Also, for all their issues, Matt Ryan's not the problem. The offense isn't the problem.
Starting point is 00:06:50 It was a top five offense last year, playing at home, and they were a top three passing offense. And remember this. As much as I love Russell Wilson, it is really hard in the NFL to go on the road cross-country against a pro-bowl level quarterback when you, Seattle, have a significantly worse offensive line and defensive line. That's hard to do in the NFL. We're going into a stadium on the road. We have easily the worst O-line and D-line in the game. Atlanta's getting points. Atlanta's going to win it.
Starting point is 00:07:26 24-23. Raiders at Panthers. I know, I know, I know. A bunch of new stuff for Carolina. But can I just say something. Of course I can. It's my show. Teddy Bridgewater's good.
Starting point is 00:07:39 I'll show you something funny. Best winning percentage is a starting quarterback in the last five years. Minimumum 20 starts. Lamar, Garoppolo, Brady Mahomes. Teddy Bridgewater. He's 16 and 6. he also has a history of walking into a playbook and figuring it out. He's got a lot of college starts. He's got some NFL starts. This is a guy they inserted into New Orleans last year. He was
Starting point is 00:08:01 ready to go. He does not make mistakes. He's got a world-class running back. I've always thought their wide receivers are underrated. The offensive line is good enough. Middle of the pack. Now, defensively, they're in a rebuild and they put a lot of their draft picks on the defensive side, but the Raiders were a bad team last year, not just on defense. Week 12 on. The Raiders were bad offensively with all those weapons. It's a Gruden Derek Carr issue. The Raiders were a bad road team, two and six, and lost, outscored by 90 points. Worst road point differentiate in the NFL.
Starting point is 00:08:35 I don't like all the change in Carolina, but I'm getting over a field goal from a quarterback that wins, figures out playbooks, and has arguably the best running back coach and a new creative head coach. I'm going to take Carolina to beat the Radas, 2827. Cowboys and Rams. I think the Rams are the better team and they're getting pointed home. I'm going to take Los Angeles plus three. First of all, the Cowboys only had seven defensive interceptions last year. Translation.
Starting point is 00:09:04 They don't make offenses uncomfortable. They don't. The Rams O-line is healthy. Same quarterback, same coach, same system, same left tackle, same wide receivers, same tight end. This is a good Rams team with a super hyper-competable. creative head coach. Sean McVan season openers.
Starting point is 00:09:21 This is what creative head coaches do. He's 3-0, average 36 points. Two of the three wins came by plus 20 points. Jared Goff, by the way, for all the heat he gets, in the last four weeks, average 330 yards passing. Second best in the NFL, higher than Mahomes. Why?
Starting point is 00:09:39 Cooper Cup, Robert Woods, good tight ends. By the way, Cam Acres, rookie running back out of Florida State, has been the talk of the camp, as has Van Jefferson wide receiver from Florida. I think Dallas, if they played in a month, maybe the better team. But I think this is continuity, been a quiet camp. The Rams are healthy.
Starting point is 00:09:59 The walking on eggshell girly thing is gone. I like the Rams to win this game in their new stadium, 28 to 27. A lot of points scored here. That is my blazing five. So I like one big favorite. I like Baltimore to roll. then I'm going to take the Jets in points, the Falcons in points, Carolina and points, and the Rams in points. I've got to be honest with you. Every week, I think I'm going to go 5 and 0.
Starting point is 00:10:26 Every dang week I think I'm going to go 5 and 0. The pick I didn't go with, but I was really close, was Miami plus 6.5 at Foxborough. But the cam factor, I do think the secondary for New England is sensational. And I just think to myself, it's going to be ugly. it's going to be this 17, 16, 20, 21. I don't know. I don't know. I just think it's going to be ugly and unpredictable and some turnovers and a bunch of new stuff for both teams. So I stayed away from that.
Starting point is 00:10:59 I do like Miami to win. But I just, you know, Foxborough does weird things. Belichick and Foxborough win games. They shouldn't all the time. All right. Oh, I got to get to this. This is the power of the NFL. Like, we all watch great NBA, NBA final.
Starting point is 00:11:17 We watch, we're going to watch Clippers Lakers. We watch if the, you know, the Dodgers get to the world series. We watch great. We watch Ohio State, Michigan. We watch Alabama, LSU. We watch great all the time in sports. The power of the NFL over every other sport, we don't watch bad NBA. We don't watch bad baseball.
Starting point is 00:11:36 We don't watch bad hockey. We don't watch bad college basketball teams. We don't watch crappy college football teams. The power of the NFL, I cannot wait to watch. the number one tanking team in the league this year hosting the least athletic quarterback in 20 years. Jags Colts can't wait. I think it's fascinating.
Starting point is 00:12:03 Why? The tankers and old man rivers. Because it's funny about the Chargers and I'm friends with their GM and I grew up liking the Chargers a lot. They had Dan Fouts and they had Chuck Muncie and John Jeffers. and Kellynne, Winslow, they were just crazy, wild fun. They've always been kind of a fun franchise with a lot of great playmakers, Lidani and Tomlitz and then others. But with Philip Rivers, you know, it's always the, I wonder,
Starting point is 00:12:30 if Eli would have gone to the Chargers and Philip Rivers to the more stable New York Giants, would their careers be different? In 14 years with the Chargers, Philip Rivers had a top five defense once a decade ago. The Chargers kicking woes are laughably well documented. battle lines from time to time. No home field advantage the last couple of years or this year, if he would have played. I got, you know, I got nothing against the Chargers, but it's been an organization with chaos.
Starting point is 00:13:02 And now you go to the best young offensive line with, I think, two of the best offensive draft picks, Michael Pickman receiver USC, Jonathan Taylor running back Wisconsin, a rock solid general manager and head coach. Jim Ursa can be impulsive, but it's a really, stable organization. And so Philip Rivers goes to an organization where there were holdouts and no home field and rarely a great defense and just, I mean, there's, you know, there's the old saying like with the Chargers is, you know, the Chargers lose like nobody else can lose in the NFL.
Starting point is 00:13:33 They outplay it and lose. And the cults have often been the opposite. They're not, they're a little vanilla. They're not over the top. They're not the most marketable. They're not the most. But they win a lot of games. And I like him to win their division this year.
Starting point is 00:13:44 I cannot wait to see Philip Rivers in a new. environment. Like Tom Brady, he had stability, so it's not like it's anything new. But the Chargers have always been a little rocky. I mean, last couple of years, they've been playing in a soccer stadium basically as a road team. They had to literally, you know, they couldn't hear at home. So I'm fascinated to watch Philip Rivers with the Colts. I have them winning the division. I think they could win this game. This was one of the games I considered, but I just don't know. I just don't know what I'm going to get with the Chargers. Frank Reich and Philip Rivers,
Starting point is 00:14:19 but I'm excited because I do think this is the best young offensive line in the NFL. Steve Burline, CBS coming up next. Chris Broussard as well. Lakers drubbed the Rockets out of series appears to be over. All that coming up. One more herd? The herd streams 24 hours a day, seven days a week within the IHeart radio app.
Starting point is 00:14:38 Search Herd to listen live or on demand whenever you'd like. Imagine an Olympics where doping is not only legal but encouraged. It's the enhanced games. Do you remember when Diana Ross double-tapped Little Kim's boobs at the VMAs? Or when Kanye said that George Bush didn't like black people.
Starting point is 00:16:22 I know what you're thinking. What the hell does George Bush got to do with Little Kim? Well, you can find out on the Look Back at it podcast. I'm Sam Jek. And I'm Alex English. Each episode, we pick a here, unpack what went down, and try to make sense of how we survived it. Including a recent episode with Mark Lamont Hill,
Starting point is 00:16:39 waxing all about crack in the 80s. To be clear, 84 is big to me, not just because, of crack. I'm down to talk about crack on day, but just so y'all know. I mean, at this point, Mark, this is the second episode where we've discussed crack. So I'm starting to see that there's a through line. We also have AIDS on the table right now. Thank you finishing that sentence.
Starting point is 00:17:00 Yes. I don't think there's a more important year for black people. Really? Yeah. For me, it's one of the most important years for black people in American history. Listen to look back at it on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your Welcome to my new podcast, Learn the Hardway with me, your host, and your favorite therapist, Kear Games.
Starting point is 00:17:20 And in recognition of Mental Health Awareness Month, I'm bringing over a decade of my own experience in the mental health field and conversations with so many incredible guests. I'm talking, Tript Fontaine, Ryan Clark. Sometimes when we're in the pursuit of the thing, we get so wrapped up in the chase that we don't realize that we are in possession of the thing. And we're still chasing it. And we don't know when we've done enough. because people scoreboard watch.
Starting point is 00:17:45 Life becomes about wins and losses. Steve Burns, Dustin Ross, because you find it important to be a good person while you hear on earth? Are you a good person because you're afraid? Because that's two different intentions, bro. Absolutely. And that's two different levels of trust.
Starting point is 00:17:59 I want you to just really be a good person. Join me, Kear Gaines, as we have real conversations about healing, growth, fatherhood, pressure, and purpose on my new podcast, learn the hard way. Open your free, our heart radio app, Search Learn the Hard Way and listen now. Fox NFL Sunday is back this week with a great slate of early games.
Starting point is 00:18:21 Then it's a blockbuster in America's Game of the Week as Brady and the New Look box take on Breeze and the Saints. Check local listings for the games in your area or watch it on the Fox Sports app. And make sure you get your Super 6 picks in before kickoff Sunday for your chance to win Terry Bradshaw's $100,000. And for top story scores and more go to the Fox Sports app. Colin, give us your winner and final score for. bucks Saints. About 3427 Saints. A lot of points. Remember Tampa Bay's special teams kicking woes in Tampa could be the difference. I also think they have a right tackle, a rookie. Tristan Worf's trying to block Cameron Jordan, which is a rough opening assignment. So I would take the Saints to win. Good stuff.
Starting point is 00:19:04 Steve Berline played 17 years in the NFL. And that is, you know, you're getting into a Brady scenario here where you have an early career along mid career. And then you're the old guy. You're just trying to get through. And Steve Burline is now joining us from Orange County via the Coward Global Satellite Network. So, you know, I was saying what Tom Brady, it's interesting because once you get hit for enough years, Eli Manning let go of that ball fast. He didn't want to get hit. Tom doesn't want to get hit.
Starting point is 00:19:32 He didn't want to sit in the pocket. But Tampa's offense, Steve, has got a lot of deep threats. This is a downfield offense and a downfield head coach. Take me kind of into the psychology of Tom now, who is. a slot receiver running back, get it out until now, Tom, hold it for a second and a half, a beat and a half longer with a young offensive line. Is that going to be interesting to you? Well, it definitely is. And you nail it right on the head, Colin, as far as what has, as far as comparing Brady to others, he does not hold the football very long. He never has, but he's
Starting point is 00:20:08 never had weapons like he has now in Tampa Bay. And it's going to be very exciting to see what Bruce Ariens decides to do with Tom Brady. Is he going to ask him to stand in there longer and hang on to the ball a little bit longer, which will result in more hits? And on a 40-plus-year-old body, that's going to take a toll. And, you know, we all know, even today, in today's game where the quarterback's don't get hit like they used to,
Starting point is 00:20:32 and for God's sakes, you can't even fall on the quarterback these days. The bottom line is that Brady is, with those receivers on the outside, he's going to probably be expected to try to make some more plays up the field. and it's going to be pretty interesting to see how that works out for him over the course of the season. So I thought what was most impressive about Patrick Mahomes last night, Steve, was we've always known he's got, he's a gunslinger. And Farr was gunslinger when he came in and gunslinger when he went out. But Mahomes comes in with the flamethrower, and last night he was a surgeon. He was incredibly effective.
Starting point is 00:21:07 He only threw the ball, only attempted one throw over 20 yards. And it was like, oh, oh, good. now he's efficient. Oh, great. How long did it take, and by the way, to be able to be efficient, you've got to be able to read defenses. So here we go. Very early in his career, he is seeing the game and thinking the game, not just playing the game. How long did it take you to get there? Well, I think it takes, but it truly takes at least three full seasons as a quarterback to really feel like you have the command of knowing all the intricacies of your offense, really being on the same page with the coaching staff and the rest of your teammates.
Starting point is 00:21:50 And understanding defense is really is the key. Defenses in the NFL are so complex. And Patrick Mahomes has made it look so easy for the first few years of his career. He's going to only get better in terms of his understanding of defense and his understanding of how to break. down a defense and take advantage of opportunities. So I think, you know, the, when we get about halfway through this contract that he just signed, we're going to realize that he's still getting better. He's still getting smarter. And if he can stay healthy, obviously, he's going to do things that haven't been done before. But what he did last night, 75%, didn't push the ball up the field.
Starting point is 00:22:29 I think Andy Reid, understanding the uniqueness of this season, there hasn't been any hitting. there hasn't been any preseason games. I don't think he wanted to put anybody at risk yesterday. I wanted to just keep the ball getting out of Patrick and Mahomes' hands quickly, have him get quick opportunities in front of him with Kelsey early. We saw Sammy Watkins jump out to a great start to his season like we did last year. We'll see if he can maintain throughout the course of the season. But I think all Andy Reid was trying to do with that game yesterday
Starting point is 00:23:01 was get Patrick Mahomes through that game healthy, his team healthy. get the W and move on to the next one. So Teddy Bridgewater's got a new team and a new coach, and Kevin Stefansky Baker's got a new coach, and Dax got a new coach. You were on, let's see, 6 teams, the Panthers, Cardinals, Cowboys, Bronc, Raiders, Jacks.
Starting point is 00:23:20 So you were on six teams. How long does it take when the new coaching staff comes in or you inherit a new staff and a new team, how long does it take to not think as much as just play? Well, it's like one of the new language, truly. It's like being dropped in Mexico or wherever else. And even though you're saying the same things and the game is the same, trying to learn that foreign language and speak on the same wavelength as the coaching staff
Starting point is 00:23:53 and get everybody to understand the new code words and the little intricacies of the offense, it does take time. And as I said a minute ago, this offseason was so unique. they did not have the time to put in and really go through those OTAs and go through a normal training camp and execute in game situations, I think those teams with new coaches, especially with a quarterback who hasn't been through that kind of a transition before. Tom Brady's another one, he's never had to learn a new offense. And so the bottom line is that we're going to see what their capabilities are in terms of
Starting point is 00:24:29 being able to adjust and adapt and learn a new system, speak a new language, and still play effectively and efficiently. I guarantee you that some of these guys are going to struggle. A lot of it's going to fall on how established that coach is, how great he is, understanding the way to teach that offense and give it to him in kind of a piecemeal type of a format. And then also really just trying to set up game plans
Starting point is 00:24:54 to play to the strengths and weaknesses of that quarterback. That'll go a long way and determine how efficient these guys are, especially early in the season. 17 years in the league, Steve Burline. So Doug Peterson's never lost an opener. He's 4-0. Andy Reid's best month is September. Sean McVease, 3-0 in openers.
Starting point is 00:25:16 You do get offensive coaches, sit there with a noteboard or a yellow pad all summer, and they write down plays, and they write down plays, and they write. Andy Reid sent me text before. He shows me he's got a new play dialed up. And I look at this Dallas Rams matchup, and I think, you know, McCarthy's a new coach. he's kind of conservative, and I can see McVeigh coming out. He's got same left tackle, same system, same quarterback, same top two receivers. He's got a little new running back situation.
Starting point is 00:25:43 I don't think it's a great matchup for the Cowboys Week 1. Give me your thoughts about in your career. Offensive coaches, week one or two, they bring a lot of exotics in. Do you have experience with that? Oh, yeah, for sure. And offensive coaches, as a quarterback, you always want. wanted to be with one of those creative offensive minds that you know every single week is going to find a way to set up those big play opportunities and really figure out the way
Starting point is 00:26:15 that he wants the game to flow into the first 15 plays. You're always trying to get a real feel for how the defense is going to adjust to some of those formations where you're going to have your shot plays later on in the game. You want to know how that defense has adjusted to see in those. formations and those personnel groups early in the game so you can set up those plays later. But I do think you're reading it right. With McCarthy in the new offense with Dak Prescott, I think they're going to be at a little bit of a disadvantage going to this game. Sean McCarthy has been licking his chops, getting ready to call those first 15 and get this
Starting point is 00:26:52 season going off on the right note. His players are all very familiar with the system. It definitely is an advantage for the teams that have had an established system for over a year. over the teams that have not had that normal offseason and a chance to really get their team comfortable with the new system and how things are going to be done during the course of a football game. So I like the way you're reading this when I think the Rams in this first game against the Cowboys at home is going to be a good matchup for them. By the way, what do you make at Dallas? I don't like this matchup this week. I'm not as high as everybody else. I joked yesterday. they're like a house that needed to fix the plumbing and they just repainted it.
Starting point is 00:27:34 I think from the outside, it just looks wonderful. Philadelphia, if I look at Philadelphia, they had to address wide receiver, did in the draft, cornerback did with Darius Slay. They're not as sexy, not as appealing when you drive by the house, but I think they're electrical and their plumbing's better. Dallas, to me, first draft pick was C.D. Lamb. The last thing they needed was another wide receiver. So I do think there's, you know, I think on the outside, Dallas looks great.
Starting point is 00:28:00 just wonder about the secondary and aging offensive line. What do you make of their season? If I roll the dice, what do you think Dowell's going to be? That's one of the big questions this year. I think McCarthy was the right hire for sure. I don't think they could have done a better job in terms of who they selected to be the head coach. He's been there.
Starting point is 00:28:20 One Super Bowl's before. Been a consistent winner. He's going to help Dak reach new levels in terms of his production as a quarterback. But that still is big question mark in mind. I think Dax still has an awful lot to prove. You know, they started out three and oh last year and then over the last 13 games, he went five and eight. So that's not what you want out of your franchise quarterback. He's got to be a guy that can step up and make plays
Starting point is 00:28:44 at the end of games to give you a chance to win and have a chance to get into those playoffs. But you're right. CD Lamb is attractive as he was. And I'm sure he was the popular pick in in terms of a local guy who can come in and really be another playmaker for this offense. When you talk about what that team needed, there's a lot of different ways they could have gone. Did they get better in terms of an overall team? That's a big question. And that defensive backfield is going to be tested from week one against a very good prolific Rams passing game. They're going to be tested on Sunday and we're going to see how they do.
Starting point is 00:29:23 But you're right. I mean, Jerry Jones has not been able to put it all together as the decision maker since Jimmy Johnson left back in the mid-90s. And this may be another example of that. They've got to find a way to make these picks and these decisions that they're making show up in terms of going into the playoffs and making a deep run one of these years. Steve Berline, good stuff. Good seeing you. We'll talk soon. All right, Colin, take care.
Starting point is 00:29:50 By the way, here's Mahomes last night. We were talking. and he went from a gunslinger. Farr was a gunslinger the day he came in and the day he left. He never was hyper-efficient. Even the year in Minnesota when he was really efficient, he ended up going gunslinger, interception, cost him a chance at a Super Bowl.
Starting point is 00:30:05 Mahomes last night, 75% completion percentage, 123 pass-a-rading, only one ball thrown over 20 yards downfield, only three completions over 10 yards. He went sports car to Tesla. He went surgical last night, which is terrifying. And a lot of these guys, Jeff George, Brett Ford,
Starting point is 00:30:22 barb, Big Ben to a large degree. They come in with huge arms, and they fall in love with their arm. Things are easier. They can throw the ball down field, and that's what they like. Mahomes has the ability to do that, and last night said, okay, but the next level is, can I be super efficient? That's one of my knocks on Big Ben. Big Ben throws a great deep ball.
Starting point is 00:30:41 But, boy, he can be erratic. He can miss guys right out of the backfield 12 yards away. And I think it's really saying something. When you have the self-awareness to go, it tells me that Patrick Mahomes believes he has all-time talent. And he doesn't want to waste it. A lot of guys, Joe Namath did this. Brett Farv comes in.
Starting point is 00:30:57 Big Ben comes in. Big, big arms. And I don't get the efficiency. Aaron Rogers, to his credit, has got a big arm, but he's really efficient. For Patrick Mahomes to be able to no look, left hand, throw it deep. But for the record, he has weapons to throw it.
Starting point is 00:31:14 He's got great deep threats. And then he just scales it down, goes super efficient, hyper impressive for me last night. Joy Taylor with the news. No, no, no, no. Turn on the news. This is the herd line news.
Starting point is 00:31:30 Well, Joe Judge has made some headlines in his training camp approach for the Giants this year in his first year. Thursday was no different. Judge was not happy with how his players were performing at the beginning of practice. So he called the team together, yelled at them with a profanity-filled tirade
Starting point is 00:31:47 about their lack of effort and had them start practice over. Oh. So he stopped practice, so they weren't working hard enough, give them a little talking to and start the practice over again. A couple times Gouleta didn't bring his A game.
Starting point is 00:32:02 I've thought about starting the show over. Middle of hour or two, just like Goulet, got nothing but hockey scores here. We're starting the show over. I may do that next week. Football season's a whole new me. Well, this actually is significant because this added an additional, like, 30 minutes to their practice time.
Starting point is 00:32:20 Blake Martinez said he's never seen this in his four years in the lead. Sequin Barclay actually is completely buying into Joe Judge, which I think is very important because he is the face of that franchise. You talk about Daniel Jones, but Seekwon is a star. He said, I love it. Coach didn't like how we started off, and we had to step up to the challenge. I don't buy into all of this rah-rah stuff. But a little rah-rah's okay.
Starting point is 00:32:44 A little rah-rah's okay. I think that it's more about what Joe Judge is trying to do is establish a culture of excellence. No nonsense. No nonsense. No excuses. None of the cutting corners and all those things that have led the Giants to be where they are. The Giants are, to me, one of those organizations in the NFL that it's important that they be competitive. Like they are a cornerstone franchise in the NFL.
Starting point is 00:33:14 And they have been pretty significantly dysfunctional over the past couple years. They made the playoffs in 2016, lost to Green Bay in the wildcard game. But yeah, they've had a lot of change and a lot of stuff going on. I mean, obviously we know what Eli Manning was, and that was a whole other circumstance. But I like the way that they're going. I just want to, I don't want to get too caught up in the, like, running through walls for coach and all that stuff. All that stuff is great. And I think there's some of that that it's important.
Starting point is 00:33:44 towards establishing a culture, but you also have to go out and win and have the pieces and make the right personnel decisions as well. So, Chiefs running back, Clyde Edwards-Hell-Layer put on a show last night in his NFL debut. He rushed for 138 yards, 25 carries with a touchdown and the Chiefs 3420 win. He is only the 10th running back in NFL history to rush for at least 100 yards and score a touchdown in his first game. The last to do that was Sequin Berkeley at 2018. kind of interesting. The Chiefs actually ran the ball more last night than they threw it.
Starting point is 00:34:17 Yeah. We think of the Chiefs as mostly a, you know, high-flying, finesse, fast offense. But they ran the ball a lot last night, 34 times, and Clyde Edwards Hellare had 25 of those carries for 138 yards. Just like college, hard to bring down. You know, he's not a burner.
Starting point is 00:34:34 He doesn't have breakaway speed, but he makes a lot of guys miss. Really, real. I mean, I'm not a scout, but super quick feet, and it almost never going to be. goes down with the first hit. I was surprised, actually, that he was available for the Chiefs in the draft. I mean, there was a lot of good running backs in this draft. This is why I thought he will, where I think he will end up being rookie of the year. Like, he walked into a great situation.
Starting point is 00:34:56 That's not going to take anything away from his talent. I thought he was great in college and was going to have a great NFL career. But this is a, this is a significant debut for him. Like, he showed what he's going to be able to do with the Chiefs, what happens when you walk into a situation that's well run, a great offense. You have Andy Reid. They're going to use you. So he's going to be huge for the Chiefs this year. Really great showing out of him last night. So Tom Brady will make his Bucks debut against the Saints on Sunday.
Starting point is 00:35:23 I still can't believe it. Like, we're going to watch Tom Brady with the Buccaneers. It's so weird. And for the first time, in a long time, Brady will not be favored in a regular season game. Fox bet has the Bucks as three and a half point underdog to the Saints. Should be. The last time he was an underdog in the regular season was week two of 2015 against the bills. So you have the Saints winning 3427.
Starting point is 00:35:49 Yeah, touchdown game. I just think they're built to win now with a bunch of returning starters. Yeah, I mean, this is why I like the Saints this year, because we're talking about the Bucks and we're talking about the 49ers and we're talking about the Packers and talking about the Cowboys. The Saints are returning what has been a great team for a couple years with bad breaks in the playoffs. And this is Drew Breeze. He's going to go all in this year. Sean Payton and Drew Breeze are joined at the hip. They have a great defense.
Starting point is 00:36:17 Big time veterans. Brought in some new pieces that I really like. But I do think that throughout the season, the biggest thing for the Saints is going to be that they stay healthy. That's what's going to matter for the Saints. The Buccaneers, who knows, but it's going to be a fun ride either way. Yeah. Buccaneers special teams worry me.
Starting point is 00:36:34 Right tackle a rookie against Cam Jordan Sunday worries me. but I think these are really good football teams. Joy with the news. Well, that's the news. And thanks for stopping by. The herd live. Chris Broussard, small ball is a myth. And the Lakers, they're starting to look really good in stuff.
Starting point is 00:36:53 LeBron getting close to the Western Conference finals. Lakers, I've got to be honest. I've been a critic. They look good. They look big. And they didn't play their big lineups. They went a little small and still dominate the rockets. Chris Broussard next.
Starting point is 00:37:07 seeing the check engine light come on freaks people out anxiety city get car shield a warranty when yours runs out save 10% car shield dot com code herd hrg imagine an olympics where doping is not only legal but encouraged it's the enhanced games some call it grotesque others say it's unleashing human potential either way the podcast's superhuman documented it all embedded in the games and with the athletes for a full year. You might have seen the skits, the reactions, my journey from basketball to college football, or my career in sports media. Well, somewhere along the way, this platform became bigger than I ever imagined.
Starting point is 00:38:07 And now I'm bringing all of that excitement to my brand new podcast, The Clifford Show. Do you remember when Diana Ross double-tapped Little Kim's boobs at the VMAs? Or when Kanye said that George Bush didn't like black people. I know what you're thinking. What the hell does George Bush got to? I do a little kill. Well, you can find out on the Look Back at it podcast.
Starting point is 00:39:06 I'm Sam J. And I'm Alex English. Each episode, we pick it here, unpack what went down, and try to make sense of how we survived it. Including a recent episode with Mark Lamont Hill waxing all about crack in the 80s. To be clear, 84 is big to me, not just because of crack. I'm down to talk about crack on day, but just so y'all know. I mean, at this point, Mark, this is the second episode where we've discussed crack. So I'm starting to see that there's a through line.
Starting point is 00:39:31 We also have AIDS. on the table right now. Thank you for finishing that sentence. Yes. I don't think there's a more important year for black people. Really? Yeah. For me, it's one of the most important years for black people in American history.
Starting point is 00:39:46 Listen to look back at it on the IHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Welcome to my new podcast, Learn the Hardway with me, your host, and your favorite therapist, Kear Games. And in recognition of mental health awareness month, I'm bringing over a decade of my own experience in the mental health field and conversations with so many incredible guests.
Starting point is 00:40:06 I'm talking. Tripp Fontaine, Ryan Clark. Sometimes when we're in the pursuit of the thing, we get so wrapped up in the chase that we don't realize that we are in possession of the thing. And we're still chasing it. And we don't know when we've done enough. Because people scoreboard watch.
Starting point is 00:40:22 Life becomes about wins and losses. Steve Burns, Dustin Ross. Because you find it important to be a good person while you hear on earth. Are you a good person because you're afraid? Because that's two different intentions, bro. Absolutely. And that's two different levels of trust. I want you to just really be a good person.
Starting point is 00:40:39 Join me, Kear Gaines, is we have real conversations about healing, growth, fatherhood, pressure, and purpose on my new podcast, Learn the Hard Way. Open your free iHeartRadio app. Search Learn the Hardway and listen now. Got a Laker fans. A lot of Laker fans chirping at me right now. They're better than the Clippers. Gotta be honest. They look great last night.
Starting point is 00:41:01 Anthony Davis has been significantly more formidable and consistent over the last two weeks. Chris Broussard is joining me, former New York Times, worked at the other place now, Fox Sports NBA analyst and works with Rob Parker, crazy Rob Parker and the odd couple. So let's bring in Chris Broussard. So I got to be honest, I like the Clippers, but I'm kind of, I mean, listen, they adjusted. Frank Vogel adjusted. They went a little smaller. could I say this morning, Lakers are playing better than the Clippers?
Starting point is 00:41:35 Yes. In fact, I said that very thing on Undisputed this morning. Look, I'm sticking with my Clippers pick. Clippers in seven in the Western Conference finals. I went into this week thinking 55-45 Clippers. Now, Colin, I might have about 52-48. Because it take integrity, I'm going to stay with my pick. But I agree the Lakers are playing better basketball right now.
Starting point is 00:42:00 I do think the Clippers, like the Lakers have reached their A game in my view. Yeah. The Clippers are climbing towards their A game. One thing, advantage that the Lakers do have, right now at least, Anthony Davis is you can mark him down for at least 26 and 10. At least, I can't do that with Paul George. I know the 10 is a lot for George, but I mean, I can't mark him down for 26 points. I can't mark him down for 23.
Starting point is 00:42:30 points. So I'm going to, if I'm the Clippers, I'm going to need Paul George to be much more consistent. Give me his A game virtually all seven times out for them to win this series. Now, I think they're deeper. I think they're tougher. I think they're more comfortable in the role of the hunter. And they've been to hunted in these first two rounds with Dallas and Denver. Come next week when they face the Lakers, they will be back to the hunter, which I think they're more comfortable in. So for those reasons and a few more, I've got the clippers still, but you're right. The Lakers fans got to be happy. They look terrific. They really do. Okay. So a lot of blame goes around when you lose a series. I'm not into Houston. They
Starting point is 00:43:15 could have lost, frankly, they could have lost to Oklahoma City, which is a rebuilding team. I didn't buy the Westbrook Hardin thing. I think they're too ball-centric. Dan Tony probably gets fired. But let's talk about James Hardin for a second. Last night. I mean, you're the leader. of the team. I didn't think they played with a lot of spirit. They didn't play with a lot of energy. Be as honest as you can about James Harden. Beyond being a great score, is
Starting point is 00:43:40 that the ceiling? Just, he scores a lot. It's looking like Colin, it was sad. It was just sad. And the two saddest things are that now, one, it was predictable. I'm not, I wasn't even surprised.
Starting point is 00:43:56 I didn't go in predicting, oh, he's going to have a horrible game. But what I surprise, no, because he's done this time and time again. In six previous elimination games, not even including last night, which was a de facto elimination game, he shot 25% from three point range. And there's something about 2.4.11. This is like the fourth time he's gone 2.411 in a big game. And a guy that averages 35 points a game, take an 11 shots, I get it.
Starting point is 00:44:27 He got to the foul line that shows some level of a. aggressiveness. He got there 20 times. But I need more than 11 attempts. And it looked like Colin, it almost looked like he conceded. Like he gave in and kind of said, yes, I am that guy that you guys have been saying I am. I am that guy that's not going to deliver in the big playoff moments. And I love Hardin. I love, I'm not one that thinks his game is boring and hate to watch it. I understand how difficult it is to do what he does. But I got to be honest, in these playoffs, this is going to be a big stain on his legacy without question.
Starting point is 00:45:10 Yeah, no, I just see him different. I mean, listen to Carl Malone's a great player, but I never thought he was the same player in the playoffs. I just never did. It was a reality of it. So, Kauai Leonard, you are the company you keep. Okay, whoever your friends are, people will make certain judgments, who you hang out with who you are.
Starting point is 00:45:26 You start looking at all these clubs Kauai Leonard's in. All-Star game MVP, defensive player of the year, two-time final MVP and champion. I'm telling you right now, if every NBA player lined up, we're at the YMCA, I take LeBron 1 and Kauai 2. If he wins a third title as MVP, Chris, he's in my top 10. He's on my starting five. Ooh, ooh. Well, here it is. Okay, I'm taking Kareem Magic, Michael, Given.
Starting point is 00:45:56 And then two forwards. You can have bird. I'm taking LeBron Kauai. I'll take bird. And then there's a guy named Tim Duncan that I might take, that I would take over Kauai. First of all, your philosophy about you are who you hang with, it scares me and makes me cringe,
Starting point is 00:46:14 considering I do a show with Rob Parker. But nonetheless, look, Colin, I love Kauai. I think he and LeBron are battling for that best player in the world. I think it's LeBron still. But, you know, they're in a war, tug a war for it. But this is too premature. Look, you know what I say, Colin.
Starting point is 00:46:33 When we differentiate between the all-time greats, we nitpick. And I got a nitpick with Kauai right now. Why? The first championship, let's assume they win it this year. The first championship, that wasn't his team. I know he won finals MVP. That was like, like, Andre Aguadala winning finals MVP in Golden State. You could have picked several guys.
Starting point is 00:46:56 That was still Tim Duncan, Tony Parker, Manu Genoobli's team, and Kauai averaged 13 points that year. So that wasn't his team. He didn't lead them to the championship. The second championship, major credit to him, because we know Toronto could not get over the hump. However, they don't win that if Kevin Durant doesn't get hurt. I don't think they win it if Clay Thompson doesn't get hurt.
Starting point is 00:47:21 Again, nitpicking. So this will be the championship that's, far superior to his other two. It's way too soon for top five. What I do, Colin, if he wins it, I think he's right there with Kevin Durant in that 15 to 20 range. More toward 15, all-time great 15. But look, he's got several years left to add championships.
Starting point is 00:47:47 But right now, top five, no. And like I said, Bird, Duncan, as far as forwards, definitely taking them over Kauai. Only 30 seconds left. The last 11 years, LeBron, Kauai or a Western team has won the final. Regardless of Raptor Celtics, can an Eastern team win the finals? You never say never, but no. It's one of these LA team.
Starting point is 00:48:10 This is not only the city championship, it is the NBA championship that's coming up. So it reminds me of Lakers Spurs back in the day with Kobe Shack and Duncan in the Spurs. This team's winning it, the winner it is. Look, he looks so well-appointed, well-dressed. Rob Parker's a total professional, and he will co-host a show with Crazy Rob Parker in a couple hours. Good to see you. And the beer's getting better every day, Colin.
Starting point is 00:48:36 Sean Connery. Now is Sean Connery. You're on your way to Sean Connery. Okay. All right. Good stuff. Chris Brousart. Thanks, buddy.
Starting point is 00:48:45 Raycon has new wireless earbuds. The Everyday E25 is 15% off. Go to Raycon. Buyraycon.com slash heard. by Raycon.com slash hurt. So many NFL. I'm looking at all the schedule right now. I just, I can stare at stare.
Starting point is 00:48:58 The staff makes funny me every morning. I'm like, give me the standings and give me the schedule. I just stare at them. And Goulde throws me hockey scores. There are so many good games this week. I'm trying to look at a stinker. Chicago, Detroit, doesn't fascinate me. Even Philadelphia, Washington.
Starting point is 00:49:13 I want to see Dwayne Haskins. I got to see him. I want to see him with Ron Rivera. That defensive front with Chase Young is going to be a top three defensive front in the NFL. They were good last year. Now they added Chase Young and Ron Revere's a great defensive coach. Not a lot of...
Starting point is 00:49:27 Probably not a whole lot of surprises with Jets Bills, but it's still a division game. Yeah, no, no, I think I love Sam Darnold, so I'm not... Yeah. I mean, but again, Vegas against Carolina, these are not great teams. Cannot wait to watch Gruden and Carr. Raiders are interesting. They're interesting. They're not going to be good, I don't think, but they're interesting.
Starting point is 00:49:47 Yeah, every game is good. Every game has a storyline. Oh, man, Cleveland. Talk about short straw. They chose Baltimore at Baltimore. Harbaugh is one of the best opening week coaches in the NFL. Oh, that's a tough draw for Baker. He's the only guy I follow on Instagram.
Starting point is 00:50:06 I'm rooting for him. Hour three next. Another podcast from some SNL late-night comedy guy, not quite. Unhumor me with Robert Smigel and friends.
