This is an I-Heart podcast.
Guaranteed Human.
Another podcast from some SNL, late-night comedy guy, not quite.
Unhumor me with Robert Smygel and friends.
Me and hilarious guests from Bob Odenkirk to David Letterman
help make you funnier.
This week, my guest, SNL's Mikey Day and head writer, Streeter Seidel,
help an a cappella band with their between songs banter.
Where does your group perform?
We do some retirement homes.
Those people are starving for banter.
Listen to humor me with Robert Smigel
and friends on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.
Imagine an Olympics where doping is not only legal, but encouraged.
It's the enhanced games.
Some call it grotesque.
Others say it's unleashing human potential.
Either way, the podcast's Superhuman documented it all, embedded in the games and with the athletes
for a full year.
Within probably 10 days, I'd put on 10 pounds.
I was having trouble stopping the muscle growth.

Fox Sports Radio. Here we go. Good second.
We're alive in L.A. It's the Hurt. Wherever you may be and however you may be listening. Thanks for making us part of your day. Colin Wright called wrong in about a minute. So I watched the U.S. Open Golf at the LA Country Club. It's a beautiful course, one that would never allow me to be a member. Very, very nice course. Beverly Hills, for the uninitiated. It's a really ritzy part of town. Holmby Hills, Beverly Hills. It's like, you know, a billion dollar homes on it or whatever. But it doesn't,
looked as good as like a Pinehurst in New Jersey or a pebble beach. It's not as mind-blowing.
It's not as aesthetically, ooh, ah. I was rooting, rooting hard for Rory. He did not win.
It was a little foggy. You see what we've been dealing with in Los Angeles. It's not that sunny
here right now. This morning, it's all gloomy and, you know, whatever. Nobody cares about our problem.
But I did think it was a good yesterday. It was a good day. And I also think United States men's
national team will talk about it in a second. They look ready to roll.
Oh my gosh, big news based on this weekend and how things went for the U.S.
Mexico, by the way, just fired their coach.
So you know you're playing well when you're getting other countries' coaches fired.
And he was on the job for about four and a half months.
That's how bad the U.S. beat him down on Thursday.
Colin right, Colin wrong.
On a Monday, here we go.
Where Colin was right.
Well, Sean Payton's influence is virtually immediate.
The story is out that Russell Wilson is shedding weight.
He'll go back to basketball on grass, which is what Sean Payton told us he would do when he went to Denver.
He told me on air, he told me off air. The key to Russell Wilson was getting him to play like the Seattle Russell Wilson.
So the story's out. Russell Wilson is shedding weight. Translation, he'll be moving, which is his superpower and always has been.
Where Colin was right? I was advocating for Nicola Yokic to be the real MVP.
The MVP vote was sadly an anti-yokic vote, but I said he was more durable than Embed.
He elevates others more than Embed.
His consistency is better than Embed, and he showed all three through the playoffs.
In fact, he led the finals in points, rebounds, and assists that had never been done before,
even by Bill Russell, LeBron James, Magic Johnson.
Bird didn't matter MJ.
Yokic is easily the most valuable player in the league.
Unfortunately, the MVP vote has become the MIP most interesting person.
That's why Harden and Embedive won it in recent years.
Where Colin was wrong.
What happened to Zion Williamson?
When he came into the league after his first year, I said he's going to have to ditch New Orleans at some point.
Now they want to ditch him.
I mean, can't stay healthy, not in shape.
not very focused, hasn't worked on his game.
I think it's time to listen to offers.
I mean, you know, you can't keep doing the same thing over and over again.
It's possible New Orleans is a fun, lively food city.
Maybe it's a bad fit.
Maybe it's the organization.
I don't know, but I love this kid.
I loved his personality.
I loved his game.
And this thing has gone sideways with the Pelicans.
Where Colin was right?
Bryce Young, rookie quarterback.
For Carolina, here's what the team's best defensive player, Brian Burns, said about him last week.
It's hard not to like that kid.
I don't know.
He put quite a stamp on the locker room.
He walks around with this kind of humble, excuse my language, he's like humble, but I know him the type of swag.
You know what I'm saying?
Like he know he got it, but he's humble with it.
I said this during the draft.
I thought he was easily the top quarterback candidate.
Accuracy, poise, experience, intuitive.
Bryce Young already turning heads from the stars with the Carolina Panthers.
Where Colin was right.
The United States men's national team, down two of their best players,
rolled over Canada yesterday.
I want to show you a goal by an emerging young player,
Fowleron Balligan, who is going to be our next Pulisic.
He could have chose England or the United States.
We're lucky enough to have him.
This is the most skilled United States men's national team roster ever,
also the youngest, beat Mexico 3-0,
hammered Canada 2-0.
In neither match, did it look athletically that close?
close. Young, twitchy, fast, watch out World Cup.
Where Colin was raw.
What's happening to baseball? Big markets and big stars are in the tank.
The Yankees, Dodgers, and Astros all got sweat this weekend.
The Dodgers bullpens a bit of a mess. The Astros can't stay healthy.
Yet the Cincinnati Reds have the longest winning streak.
The Orioles are on fire and the debacks are leading the National League West.
Baseball's completely upside-distance.
down. Big markets and big stars all got swept this weekend.
Where Colin was right.
Steve Sarkesian at Texas.
Lincoln Riley at USC, two of my favorite coaches had massive recruiting weekends.
Two glamor programs have also been able to secure their best players.
The only people leaving these programs in the transfer portals are players who would have lost snaps.
This is the hottest USC has been in terms of.
recruiting since Pete Carroll and Sark had a massive weekend. He had a top three class in February.
He's followed it up with excellent weekends. Never forget. These are the two glamour programs in
the country. When they played for a national championship, the rating was a 22. That is 30 to 40%
higher than what the current national championships get with SEC powers. So both Sark and Lincoln Riley
in an offensive pivoting sport are crushing it.
Where Colin was right, where Colin was wrong,
plenty of both.
And with that, as you know, I only have dinner with two people.
My wife and NBA insider Rick Buker,
Bukes is on the show on a Monday, baby.
Covering the NBA since the 90s.
They'll be on speak at 430 Eastern on FS1.
So it's funny.
I'm sitting flying back, got up this morning,
and heading to the airport.
Bradley Beal to the Sons.
And I was like,
you know, I hear rumors all the time.
Why that it happened so quickly before the draft?
Well, because there was competition for Miami was interested.
And it's the same as with the Kevin Durant deal.
Like Matt Isbio buys the team in the next minute he's making a deal for Kevin Durant.
He has moved fast and he hasn't cared necessarily what the price is.
but in this case, price is fairly low.
So what I don't get, though, is I don't get the fit.
You were already top heavy and it didn't work
with Chris Paul, Kevin Durant, and Devin Booker.
You were hurt by your bench.
You were hurt by your lack of defense.
So now adding Bradley Beale and moving two more players out
and Chris Paul and Landry Shamit,
you're not solving any of your problems.
So here's what I think they're going to do.
I think they're going to move DeAndre 8.
For sure. They have to.
Yeah.
And they're going to get defenders and a bench player.
Okay, but how many can you get?
If you told me they brought in two six, seven guys who can defend, I'm good with a team.
Really?
Well, who led the NBA in bench scoring?
The Pacers, Spurs, and Pistons.
Okay.
You know who was bad at it?
Miami, Boston, Philadelphia, and Denver was average.
I can't make Landry Shamet more talented.
Right.
I can cobble together through the buyout market, the draft, free agency, trade deadline.
I can cobble together a competent bench.
If you give me these three guys, I don't need a great.
Denver didn't have a great bench.
Miami's bench didn't do anything.
Denver's was fifth.
You know who had the best bench in the playoffs?
Sacramento.
Couldn't win a series.
Okay.
What are you basing best bench on?
I'm on bench scoring.
So Sacramento's bench scoring and the playoffs was remarkable.
They couldn't beat the old warriors.
There's a lot more that you get out of your bench and your other guys than just scoring,
especially if you're top heavy.
Like to me, finding those 3 and D guys and defensive guys,
like those are gold right now.
That's why you trade 8 and 4.
Okay, but you need to show me who you're going to get.
And then, okay, so you get two really good wing defenders.
Now you're incredibly small.
And you can't play big and small.
That was the beauty of Denver is they could play big,
but they could also play small and fast.
And as we've seen, this idea that you need a big three that top heavy works is a myth.
I'm not sure it ever worked.
Even going back to the Boston Celtics teams, that's where it started with Paul Pierce, Kevin Garnett, Ray Allen, when those came together.
But if you looked at the rest of that team with PJ Brown and Sam Cassell and James Posey and
Eddie House, even Liam Poe played 14 minutes a game.
He gave you eight points and four rebounds.
Depth has always been an important element.
And then the other part is how do those pieces fit together?
In the case of KG, Paul, and Ray, they worked because they all had a different strength
and they supported each other.
Here I've got three largely perimeter scorers.
Yeah.
And who's your playmaker?
who's your distributor? Because you don't need defenders.
You need a point guard now.
My takeaway is Beal can be at times your lead dog.
Also, I think Booker's a more dynamic, Jamal Murray.
Jamal Murray can get clogged up and trapped.
It's hard to trap Booker.
You can give Booker the ball and he can get you into the offense.
Booker and what he showed after Chris Paul got hurt.
He's pretty good.
He showed me more than I've ever seen.
They also have Cam.
But campaign, he's not really a get-you-ins.
into things.
So, and he's,
he got five guys on the roster right now.
They got five sign guys.
They're going to have to sign seven or eight guys
to all minimum contracts.
Colin,
you work some amazing magic.
Like,
you know this J. Mack.
Like, behind the scenes,
he's pulling all kinds of strings.
I go into wardrobe or I go into makeup
and they're like, yeah,
Colin doesn't think the tone is quite right.
You need a different pigment on your,
like he's pulling all kinds of strings.
But even you,
even you, signing all minimums,
and you've got to build a team that's going to be better than the Denver Nuggets?
Well, time out, first of all.
That's the standard right now.
So if my team's not as good as Denver,
it's like saying you're not making as much money as Amazon.
Okay.
It's not the worst criticism.
Okay.
Does it put them old warriors, old Lakers,
beat up old clippers,
Sacramento's young and interesting, but not quite there.
Yeah.
It does put them to me in a rarefied air.
Okay.
I'll give you an example.
So we've been talking about how perfect, I mean, if I have to hear about the Celtics,
but Nick Wright's been on this.
So who facilitates their offense?
They don't really have one.
Marcus Smart's a defensive guy.
Jalen Brown's a wing, so is Tatum.
They don't have one.
Now, they kind of make it work because they're in their prime.
I think this team is so profound as an offensive piece.
And let's go back to Denver.
Without this bench, they beat him twice.
Chris Paul got hurt.
They were the one team that Denver, they made Denver.
sweat in multiple games.
So now I've got three elite scores.
You move Aiton.
If it was me, just I would say, get me two six, seven and a half defensive players.
Solid NBA guys.
Three stars.
I like the coach.
I think you're top two in the West.
So you really like this move and these sons.
I am not into the star label.
My theory, you and I talked about this over salmon.
Yes.
At the grotto.
Salmon.
Asparagus at the Chateau.
I think Chateau is a little more appropriate.
So we talked about this.
It's not three stars.
It's three impactful players.
Aaron Gordon was as good as Denver's Benz-Flars.
When he got hurt in game five against Miami,
you're like, he doesn't even score.
They have a hole in their team.
These playoffs, you get down to the finals,
do you have three dudes on the floor that can change the outcome?
That's what they give me.
But they give it to you in the same vein.
like Aaron Gordon could change the game by the way he defended Jimmy Butler and the way that he rebounded
and the way that he could just pound Gabe Vincent if you got to switch on him.
To me, they're too duplicative.
They're too much jump shooting to there's just not enough variation and variety for this to work to the level.
And by the way, they've given away all of their assets.
Yeah, but what are they?
second round picks?
No, but I mean, they don't have any,
they gave up first round picks
in the Kevin Durant deal.
They gave their young talent.
See, this is a theory
that I agree with Phoenix.
So in the NFL,
when you pay Mahomes,
you have to hit on fifth,
six, seventh round guys.
Kansas City did.
Yes.
In the NBA,
the kids that come into the league
are not close to ready.
Outside of Scoot,
Wembenyama, by the 13th pick,
guys not ready to play. Fair. Fair.
So their timeline in Golden State is Steph.
Their timeline in L.A. is LeBron. Their timeline is Kevin Durant.
They need guys that can play now. Fair. Fair. But what's the shelf life on Kevin Durant right now?
Two great years. Okay. And then what?
No, I'll worry about it when it happens. It's Phoenix. It's a winner league. Guys like to play there.
It's so good.
You didn't know crazy.
No, I think, yes. In this case,
In this case, I think you're crazy.
I think you...
I think you...
I don't care.
I don't care.
Just push all my chips to the middle of the table.
I'm not a big...
Boston, example.
So Boston's going to be very reluctant
to make a move on Brown, Tatum, and Smart.
And my takeaway is,
if Miami lands Dame, you're not as good as Denver,
you're not as good as Miami,
so now you're yippee.
You're not making any...
Your future's terrific.
This is...
Make moves.
No, but you can do both.
You can build a current team and protect yourself for the future.
And by the way, I know this is you off the rails because we had a conversation about business
and how when you start running a business, you suddenly realize, oh, man, I can't just fly
by the seat of my pants.
I can't just pay everybody.
I can't just go get like every star that catches my eye.
But this isn't flying by the seat of your pants.
It's going from Chris Paul, who can't finish a playoff series to a younger, better scoring option who doesn't need the ball to score.
I'm not arguing with making the deal for Bradley Beale at this point.
Would you have made the deal?
They gave away nothing.
Yeah, no, no, no.
Fair.
And they were going to, they were going to wave or they were saying they were going to wave Chris Paul anyway.
And they really didn't give anything up to get Bradley Beale.
mad at the deal. I'm mad at the idea that Bradley Beale now makes them considerably better or more of a threat to win a championship than they were. I just, I think he makes them better. I think he makes them a better regular season team. How about this? Makes them a bigger attraction. Couldn't I argue this. Last year what they were. Yeah. Is a center who didn't like his coach and a two old point guard and two wing scores.
Now there are three agreeable wing scores.
Sounds better to me.
It is better.
And then just go trade Aiton and get a couple of six, seven guys that can defend.
Feels like a good team to me.
It is a good team.
It's a good team.
Let's just not put them in the championship conversation.
There's not many in that.
Did you have Miami in that this year?
Because they were close.
No, no, I didn't.
But you can see why Miami.
ended up getting there.
I don't know that I would put
the Phoenix Suns
in the top five teams in the league
right. Oh, whoa.
Yeah. I don't think
I'm putting them, I'm not putting them ahead of
Boston. I don't, and
just let's go, let's go west. Let's go west.
I get KD. Booker and Beal.
None of those guys have ever been afraid
to take the shot. I'm not sure
Jason Tatum wants to. Who's going to get
them the ball?
I mean, they have the same
issue as Boston.
Except better high-end talent.
But not as good defensively.
Okay.
A defense.
I heard all in here.
And not as good a bench.
I get six men a year.
Bench.
You're selling the house based on the garage.
It's not selling the house, bro.
The kitchen is, the yard is,
the fire pit is.
Yeah, okay. But I have to have a garage.
If I don't have, no, if I got to park
car in the living room, it takes
the value of the car down, when
it snows or rains, it takes down
the value of the car or the house
significantly. All right, I had something else here.
Oh, oh. So
Draymond declining his player
option, meaning it's not a big deal.
They're going to sign him at a bigger number.
Yeah. He wants
more years. And
what he got left for the year?
Yeah. Yeah. If he opted in,
I think it was close to 40 million.
something like that for one year.
They'll figure it out
where he gets two years for
25 or 30, depending on how
generous they want to be.
Mike Dunlevy, now the GM, does
it affect the Clay Thompson
contract? Got to pay him more
per year. Yeah, that's going to be a
sticky one based on the last things we heard
from Clay who thought that he should get a max
extension. He's not worth a
max extension. They can't afford it
under the new CBA. Yeah, and
he has a year left. Why do I have to
Pam. Why can't I just play Clay for a year?
You could do that.
Why wouldn't I?
You very well could, should do that.
It's just a matter of, this is where it gets tricky with Mike coming in
and why they had to have somebody from the inside.
Because these guys have come up together.
Of course.
The chemistry and they are very tight-knit.
And so, you know, other guys don't count other guys' money,
but like Draymond and Steph
are going to have their ears to the door
in terms of how they're handling clay.
It affects everybody on that team.
Let me ask this.
Is there a chance they'd move off Jordan Pool
to get size?
I thought Moses Moody had a very, very interesting playoff.
I think I found myself watching the Warriors
and asking Steve Kerr, get Moses Moody in the game.
Would they move pool for size?
I believe that they would.
And they would package Poole with Cominga.
And they would have to do that.
And get 18 points like Carl Anthony Towns like.
Yeah.
Somebody said, I was talking to some scouts and executives over the weekend,
and one of them said,
Jordan Pools and Tyler Heroes may be the two worst contracts in the league
because of the size of them
and because of the uncertainty of what they can do.
For the record.
I know you're a Jordan Poole.
No, no, no.
Acolyte.
But no.
You're not?
Tyler can be immature and Jordan can be immature.
Yeah.
I mean, Tyler went sideways for a year in Miami.
So my takeaway is, yes, they're overpaid.
They get their own shot and they scored over 20 a night.
It's hard to find in the league.
There is a talent there for sure.
Is it worth how much you're paying them is the question?
And can they mature and become better?
That is the question.
Most people do over time.
That is very true.
Probably one of the exceptions.
J. Mac, you look like you want to ask a question.
I don't want.
Are you champion?
First of all, this idea that the Phoenix Suns are not a top five team in the league.
Heading into the playoffs.
This idea.
They had one of the, I think they were the second or third best favorite to win the title.
And now you're saying they're not top five after adding an all NBA guard.
Do we need to go back to what the odds were going in the playoffs this year and who was favored
and where the Lakers were and the Warriors and.
and conversely where the Miami Heat were?
Or even the Denver Nuggets?
Rick, wouldn't you say the Suns passed the Lakers with this Bradley Beale deal?
You got to think about that?
I can make an argument that the Lakers don't have a single player
that can dependably hit a three-pointer as well as Booker KD or Beal.
Fact.
The three best shooters in the series would all be Phoenix Suns.
I would take that any day.
Also, Booker's got another six years in his prime.
Rick, who pushed Denver harder than anyone in this postseason?
I thought it was Phoenix.
No, there's only one answer.
It's only Phoenix.
Nobody else pushed them.
Don't tell me Miami pushed it.
In the words of the great Michael Malone,
they didn't bring their defense to Phoenix,
and Phoenix took advantage.
Denver was 18th in the league in defense this year.
They took advantage of a weak Miami offense in the finals
that had a bunch of our jafted guys that exceeded expectations.
Are you selling their...
I gave you facts.
It sounds.
It sounds like you're selling their championship short.
You're making it sound like...
I still think Denver's the favorite,
but my takeaway is just say it out loud.
if I said to you,
I can make, like,
and I'm not saying they're the Healds,
but Wade and LeBron never fit.
They had no size and nobody like Mario Chalmers,
and they ran into the finals four straight years.
Fit can be overrated if I have talent.
You give me, I mean,
I've been done to the TV business for a long time.
Give me talent.
I'll make Barclay and Kenny Smith and Ernie and Shaq.
Other person out, it'll work.
I'll just make it work.
Who would have thought Howie Long and Bradshaw?
One guy's the straight man.
And one guy, they make it.
People just make it work.
Colin, what about Bradley Beale going from the number one option in Washington?
Number one to now the number three guy in Phoenix where there's like no pressure on him to deliver.
Dude, get open, cut to the bat, like the same as Aaron Gordon and Wiggins that we've talked about for weeks.
Going from being a top five pick and all the pressure on you to carry the franchise to being like an accessory is huge.
Boy, did he carry that franchise too.
I mean, the only average 30 a game in the last playoff series he played in.
No.
didn't go to the playoffs the last two years.
Yeah.
Who's he playing with?
Thank goodness they took that off his back.
He must be worn out carrying that team.
Okay.
To the lottery.
You're Chris Paul.
What?
By the way, you guys just, you just suggested that building an NBA team is like building a TV show.
It is.
It is not.
It's a lot of egos.
Don't hit me with you guys.
It's a lot of egos that don't want to play defense that you have to harness the head in the right direction
and everybody wants to be the leading score.
It's the same damn.
business. It is the same business.
That's good. Okay. Chris Paul,
tomorrow. Yes.
You're his agent. Where would you
Clippers, Lakers? Where would you tell them to go?
Oh, that's, that's tough.
That's tough largely because Lakers fans think that I
don't want anybody to go to the Lakers.
What are the Clippers need? Go. I would say it's
Clippers. He's exactly
what they need. Thank you. Chris Paul,
you need somebody who's going to operate, and it's not so much
that I just, the part with the Lakers is,
you still need the ball in LeBron's hands.
If you put it into Chris Paul's hands,
it's now AD doesn't have it,
LeBron doesn't have it.
Like, there's so many pieces with the clippers,
I'm better off when Chris Paul is making the decision.
Also, I would say the clippers.
Austin Reeves is at his best.
Yes.
Creating contact.
You take the ball out of his hands.
LeBron had a horrible shooting year.
LeBron's best, getting to the basket.
You would take Austin and LeBron's strengths away.
and if you have an option in life to work for a company,
I tell my kids this,
go where you think you're needed most.
Like Chris,
I've been watched the,
for three years I've been watched the Clippers.
I'm like,
Colline Leonard in his prime
never had big assists.
No, the ball sticks in his hands.
He's not a great passer.
He's not.
No.
All right, Bukes.
This is a pretty good performance by you.
Oh, thank you.
Thank you.
But I'm going to bring in some six, seven guys to replace me then.
We're good.
If I told you tomorrow,
they trade eight.
Aiden. First of all, let's just play this game.
Yeah. So where, I think Aiton's a good player, his problem is he's not a great defender,
rebounder, or score. He's just a really good athlete, runs the floor.
Yeah. Where in the NBA, give me a team that could use Aiton and let me see what they have as
wing players. Who needs size in the league? Go ahead. How's this one, Rick? So Miles Turner
and whoever you want on the Indiana bench, T.J. McConnell or some random guy. So the
the salaries match up. That's two guys who can play.
And I mean, hell, Miles Turner might be better than DeAndre Aden.
I don't, it's not a big gap.
How about that? You get some size? Would you do that?
How about that? I don't know if Indiana does that.
I would, sure. I would do. I mean, Indiana signed, made the offer sheet.
So they've got interest there.
Okay, so. Miles Turner.
Okay, so let's say they get Miles, Phoenix gets Miles Turner.
And.
And I'll even give you Buddy Healed.
No, they're not doing that. That's a lot of Buddy Heal.
They don't need Buddy Heel. They don't need Buddy Heel.
You take it, but T.J. McConnell has value.
This is my largesse. I am saying I will give you Buddy Heel.
I will go so high as to give you Buddy Heald.
You have Buddy Healed, Miles Turner, K.D., Booker, and Beale.
Pretty good, Clare.
And now I've got to find seven other players.
Campaign, I was supposed to say six.
Okay, that team right there can absolutely make the final.
What about Jock Landale? It sounds like he's sticking out.
He wasn't bad in the playoffs.
Jock Landale.
Don't know.
Colin, we haven't even got to them.
this show to Jock Land Day. The ring chaser idea. Like how many guys are going to want to ring chase living in Phoenix and say, yeah, I'll take the minimum. I've made a lot of money. I don't mind coming off the bench to help out. Whoever, find the guys. I haven't looked at every NBA roster. Thanks for that Lawndale. Jack Landale played in the NBA. You know what? I don't think you guys need me for this conversation anymore. You guys pretty much are supporting each other. God, I love NBA trade. Oh, thank you NBA. It's the off season and that, you know what? And we're going to get a couple more. Now we got we still got the day.
Damien Lillard question to answer.
This is fun.
I got a feeling he's going to be on the move to.
Yeah.
We know where he's going.
Yeah.
I think so.
Milwaukee or Miami.
Both good.
I would guess my...
By the way, do you believe that the bucks were strongly going after Bradley Beale?
Yeah.
100%.
They would love to switch out.
Chris Middleton.
Chris Middleton's got an opportunity to opt out of his deal.
And I think that they would love to move him and get younger and somebody more
Dependable.
I think they got the best out of Chris Middleton.
I think it's time to 100%.
So, did you make a hard press for Damia Liller?
I would love.
Milwaukee's like Portland.
Nice northern climate.
My daughter was there like two weeks ago.
She's like, this place is cool.
You know what?
Cool little town.
So the Bucks facility is right on the backside of the lake.
Yeah.
Actually a beautiful, it sneaks up on you.
It's a beautiful area in the summer.
No.
Summer, fall, Milwaukee is gorgeous.
What about the winter?
It's rough.
Well, you're playing games.
You're on the first.
road. That's right. You're in Miami and

Do you remember when Diana Ross double-tapped Little Kim's boobs at the VMAs?
Or when Kanye said that George Bush didn't like black people.
I know what you're thinking.
What the hell does George Bush got to do with Little Kim?
Well, you can find out on the Look Back at it podcast.
I'm Sam J.
And I'm Alex English.
Each episode, we pick a here, unpack what went down,
and try to make sense of how we survived it.
Including a recent episode with Mark Lamont Hill,
waxing all about crack in the 80s.
To be clear, 84 is big to me, not just because,
of crack.
I'm down to talk about crack on day, but just so y'all know.
I mean, at this point, Mark, this is the second episode where we've discussed crack.
So I'm starting to see that there's a through line.
We also have AIDS on the table right now.
Thank you for finishing that sentence.
Yes.
I don't think there's a more important year for black people.
Really?
Yeah.
For me, it's one of the most important years for black people in American history.
Listen to look back at it on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your
podcasts. Jay Mack with the news.
No, no, no, no, no. Turn on the news.
This is the herd line news.
Kind of love that the World Cup, you've got you all in on soccer, because it was a monster
soccer weekend. U.S. destroys Mexico 3-0 Thursday, and last night they defeated Canada
2-0 to win the Nations League. This is their third straight title in Concaf competitions,
following the Nations League and Gold Cup wins in 2021. Christian Pulisic said the
Victory was another step in the right direction as they gear up for the World Cup in 2026.
Colin, a lot to be excited about if you're a USA soccer fan.
And just one other point, you alluded to, they got two red cards against Mexico.
Dest, who I think is their best wingback, he was out, and then McKinney was out.
He was one of their better central playmakers.
Both were out, and the replacements come in, and you don't miss a beat.
That is enormous for the depth.
Listen, three words, trust your eyes.
If you are a soccer fan, this is.
is, it's not even close. This is easily our fastest, most skilled, most athletic, twitchiest group.
They're the best, most skillful ball on foot. They, they, you know, I was saying this, it's hard to coach in
soccer because it's like basketball where you, you have to allow for the artists to create,
but the field is so large. How much space do you get? Like, Raina is, you can see, it's a playmaker.
And so it's not an easy coach.
It's constantly running through coaches that you have a construct of how to play,
but you have to let great players play.
You have so much space to beat defenders.
And when you watch this American team, the challenge going forward to us will be how much space do we let our artists create?
Because for the first time in my life, we have them.
We don't have to play like the Italian style, which is, you know,
rarely aggressive.
One nothing, that's your win.
We've always been good on the defensive end.
We've been able to stay close to good teams.
We can now, I believe, outskill, outscore some really high-end countries.
This team is, just trust your eyes.
We have real players.
I do have to ask.
So Burrhalter's coming back as coach, which we alluded to.
His style, as you said, is defensive heavy.
At the World Cup, you know, playing for the tie.
But is that because he misjudged the offensive talent?
Perhaps he misjudged Raina,
or have the players grown so much in the last six months
that now they've got an offensive look to them in an identity?
Where do professional athletes improve the most?
It's usually 21 to 26.
And then you get into your prime years, 26 to 30.
You don't see, Michael Jordan didn't make massive improvements.
Where Jordan exploded was first.
year in the league, fourth year in the league, or like last year at Carolina, third year in the NBA.
And then it was all about being able to play with others by Michael's fifth year in the league.
Could he play with Pippin?
Could he play with others?
It's not like he got more athletic.
So most of our roster is in the still improving stage in that kind of 21 to 24-year-old stage.
That's why they make big leaps.
I mean, this team looks better than the World Cup.
How many months ago?
way better.
Like significantly better because it's like anybody who's had kids.
You're just trying to get them to 25.
Keep them out of jail.
You're like 25.
At that point, they make more mistakes.
They have more growth.
They have more to learn.
They're exploding and changing.
And I think we're watching our team explode in front of us, this talent.
They're all getting better at the same time.
So very granular point, but the Burrhalter haters, and they're out there on social media.
So one thing to give them a little props for at the World Cup.
Do you remember Pulisic took a lot of?
of the corner kicks, and they just fell flat.
Nothing off the set pieces.
The interim coach had Raina taking the corner kicks, and we got a header goal.
Like, we had opportunities.
Like, it was like, how did Burrhalter not see that and have Raina in that role?
And the new guy puts him in there.
It's, there's a lot happening.
And we should add, in the last hour, Mexico fired their coach, who've been on the job
for four and a half months, largely due to the three nothing ass kicking, we gave them
on Thursday.
Right.
That's stunning.
The U.S. doesn't get coaches fired, okay?
America for several years was not as talented as Mexico.
In the last three times we've played them, we're more talented.
Watching that game Thursday, that match, wasn't close.
It was the Chiefs and the Jaguars.
It was like, oh, there's a big gap here.
And watching us in Canada, it was like yesterday, it was 2-0, boom, boom, and then it's home-free.
It could have been a bloodbath yesterday.
I got to tell you something.
I think they're, I just, I'm amazed at how explosive we are.
Yeah, we look awesome.
Side note, the new, the interim Mexico coach was our coach at Naccaza in 2022.
I know him well.
I'll save that for my podcast.
I know you don't really care.
All right, anyways, moving on in the next story, Bradley Beal.
He's finally a contender now with the Sons joining KD and Devin Booker on the big three.
And Chandler Parsons, who I think was a guest on this show last month,
thinks Beal makes the team, makes the sons the team to watch.
He is an unselfish player.
He wants to win now at this point.
He's been losing for his entire career in Washington.
He's never had another co-star, let alone two co-stars like this,
where he's literally the third option.
There's no just magic philosophy on how to stop this.
And what I like about these three guys, they all try to defend,
and they all have potential to defend.
So it's not like what it's talking about this offensive juggernaut.
Yeah, you're looking at the best trio going into next season, and it's not even close.
Well, think about this.
when you put Hardin,
Kyrie and Durant together.
The problem was,
Kyrie and Hardin have no interest defending.
KV's always been a willing defender.
And Chandler's right.
These are unselfish guys who are willing to defend.
By the way, Yokic is willing to defend.
He's not great at it.
Curry's willing to defend.
So I,
and I also think I said this with Bucher,
give me talent.
I'll make it work.
Vogel's a good coach, right?
We like him.
Just won a championship in the bubbles.
So he got fired.
Nobody thought he deserved to be fired in L.A.
That was not a, that was not a Frank Vogel issue.
That's why he got a job so quickly and a good job.
The bottom line here is, if you give me talent, it's my job to figure out how to make it work.
What I can't overcome is untalented players.
I got three A-listers.
By the way, when Beale had Russell Westbrook, who, you know, a good player,
but when he was alongside Russell Westbrook, he averaged 30 a game and was an all NBA player.
So we both agree Booker and KD are vastly better than Russell Westbrook.
Now you're putting Beale with two elite players.
People are caught up on what Beale was on a crappy Washington team.
I don't know how they can't see past that.
I'm surprised Buechr fell for you.
I don't know if Biel's that good.
Listen, did the Miami Hedles fit?
Not really.
They had no size.
LeBron and D. Wade have kind of the same game,
and they didn't like their point guard.
They just had talent.
Yeah.
They made Bosch a perimeter player.
Like, it was weird.
They just had more players than everybody.
Remember when Durant would come out in that Nugget series?
You're like, oh, can they survive the Durantless minutes against the Nuggets?
They only have Devin Booker.
Now, that's not going to be an issue.
You're going to have Beal and Booker or Beal and KD.
It's good.
They're going to be.
They're going to move DeAndre Aiton, and they're going to get some nice pieces.
My guess is they'll get a classic point guard and a wing that can defend.
Or like, I like your idea of a Miles Turner and another.
If I got Buddy healed in that deal, I'd turn and move him probably.
because you have enough scores, I'd move him for a defensive piece.
I mean, I think they're not done.
You have a lot of options in the NBA.
Free agency, draft, buyout market, trade deadline.
There's a lot of ways to get better for a good GM over the next seven months.
There's a lot of time.
All right.
Finally, NFL, Pittsburgh Steelers, they're looking to make the big jump to the playoffs.
You were coming around on them last week.
A little bit.
Kenny Pickett is their QB veteran quarterback Patrick Peterson.
First year in Pittsburgh, he thinks Pickett holds the key to the team's success.
We have all the pieces that we need on defense.
We know defense win championships.
Talent across the board on the officer's side of the ball.
I believe the front office did a great job of getting what we needed in the draft.
Then you added Alan Robinson.
You got Deonti Johnson.
You got George Pickens.
You got Nike.
You know, now it's all going to come down to how well Kenney can play
and can he put the ball where it needs to go.
I believe he is a guy that we can rely on, a guy that who we can count on.
now it's going to all fall on him if he can go out there and show us what he's capable of doing.
Listen, the other thing is they have a great tight end, excellent wide receivers, tremendous defense.
We talked about this last week because there's so much flash in the AFC, Burrow, Mahomes, Allen,
we didn't pay a lot of attention to Pittsburgh.
At the end of last year, people, the last like six opponents scored 17 on average a game.
this defense was unbelievable late.
And people also may have missed that Pickett had, I think,
two come from behind Winsley.
He did.
So he was a completely different player, week seven to week 16.
Like, Pickett, again, he had a lot of snaps in college.
If you didn't watch the Steelers late,
because you were watching all the other fireworks shows,
Pittsburgh was a really testy team late.
Do you remember that game against Miami?
It was a primetime game.
I don't know if it was Sunday or Monday,
but Pickett didn't play poorly.
And, like, that was a big spot, primetime game.
This is a guy who I think was, like, a five-year college guy.
Remember a pit?
So he's not, like, some just second-year dude.
You think he's, like, close to 26 years old, maybe 27?
He's one of the class.
He kind of is a B at everything.
He can move, but he's not a burner.
He can throw, but he doesn't have a huge arm.
He's just, I mean, like, he's big, but not huge.
He's just one of those guys that, with a lot of college experience,
he can make all the throws.
Like, Tribisky can't make half the throws.
He's just good enough at every.
everything. And if you surround him with a great defense, you win a lot of games. Yeah, I'm with you.
