Starting point is 00:00:00 This is an IHeart podcast. Guaranteed Human. Hey guys, it's us. The Jonas Brothers. I'm Joe. I'm Kevin. And I'm Nick. And guess what? We created our own podcast called, Hey Jonas.
Starting point is 00:00:12 We invented a podcast? Well, we didn't invent it. We just contributed to it. We're the first people to do podcasts. We get to ask other people questions because we're sick and tired of being asked questions. Well, sick and tired is a strong way to put it. But, you know, tired and sick. Listen to Hey Jonas on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you.
Starting point is 00:00:30 you get your podcast. Just listen. We don't care where you hear it. Another podcast from some SNL late night comedy guy, not quite. Unhumor me with Robert Smygel and friends. Me and hilarious guests from Bob Odenkirk to David Letterman help make you funnier. This week, my guest, SNL's Mikey Day and head writer Streeter Seidel, help an a cappella band with their between songs banter. Where does your group perform? We do some retirement homes. Those people are starving for banter. Listen to humor me with Robert Smigel and friends on the ice. Heart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.
Starting point is 00:01:04 This week on Crimless, Rory and I welcome a very special guest. When I did a podcast, I wear my sleep masks. I like where this is going. So if you guys will indulge me. That's right, the incredibly talented and hilarious Will Ferrell on an episode dedicated to crimes committed by people named Will Ferrell. You're good for 300 crimes? Yeah.
Starting point is 00:01:26 We got two. I'm ready to. go right up to present day. Listen to Crimless on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcast. What would you eat if you had to start over? Real simple,
Starting point is 00:01:42 poor man's, poor woman's food. Black beans, chicken, rice, plantains. On the podcast eating while broke, I sit down with celebrities, entrepreneurs, and creators as they revisit the meals they once relied on in the moments that shaped their journey.
Starting point is 00:01:57 Named Best Food Podcasts at the 2006 IHeart Podcast Awards. The full season is available to binge. Right now, listen to Eating Wall Broke from the Black Effect Podcast Network on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcast. Thanks for listening to The Heard podcast. Be sure to catch us live every weekday on Fox Sports Radio in noon to 3 Eastern, 9 a.m. to noon Pacific.
Starting point is 00:02:22 Find your local station for the herd at Fox SportsRadio.com or stream us live every day on the iHeart Radio app by searching Fox Sports Radio or FSR. Thanks for listening to The Heard podcast. Here we go. Our number two, hour one flies by. This is the herd. Urban Meyer last hour. Dave Wonstadt's going to sit next to me.
Starting point is 00:02:47 We got some great stories. You know, Green Bay's defensive coordinator, Jeff Hathley, Dave Wonstadt gave him his first job. Dave Wonstadt gave first job, so I sort of got about a third of the league. And he's going to join us on the Bears. He's going to join us on the Packers and the Miami Dolphins and the Dallas Cowboys and a lot of different topics today.
Starting point is 00:03:05 I will say this about Green Bay. You know, it was really strange when a defensive, when a head coach in college quit and became a coordinator in the NFL. That doesn't happen a lot. But that's what the Green Bay Packers did. The Lions, no, no, no. They got very insular, very provincial. We're going to just, we're just going to hire a guy.
Starting point is 00:03:28 in the building to replace these two coordinators. Green Bay is like, now we're going to try something that nobody really does. We're going to go hire a college head coach, who's a very good coach, making a great living. We're going to make him a defensive coordinator. And you can't run on Green Bay. And Michael Parsons is still, between the first two games, playing about 50, 60 percent of the snaps. So you can tell when a fighter has confidence because they're aggressive, you know, Mike Tyson's early days. Look at the aggressiveness Green Bay's defense plays with.
Starting point is 00:03:58 It is an attack-style defense. Why? They have so much confidence in their ability and their speed to make up if they get beat. So when you watch a defense that is hyper-aggressive, that is a confident boxer. That's somebody that leaves their chin open because they have so much confidence of their ability to knock you out. They're not worried about protecting themselves. When I'm watching Green Bay on both sides, they are taking big swings down the field.
Starting point is 00:04:25 And here's the thing about Jordan Love. you know for years i said this about justin fields he's tall he's a good kid his teammates like him he's got a great arm he's athletic why doesn't it work jordan love is all those things but it's just better from the pocket and getting better coaching so jordan love in terms of traits that's what nfl people call it traits size arm mobility athleticism toughness his traits are unbelievable And, you know, we just don't naturally put him into the top 10. But, I mean, Kraft is going to be a multiple-time pro bowler. You just wait until Matthew Golden gets a few games under his belt from Texas
Starting point is 00:05:05 and reads healthy. And Romeo Dobbs can be hit and miss on, you know, dependability. But when I'm watching Green Bay the last two weeks, that is the best team in the league. And they're young and they're inexpensive at most positions. Micah and Jordan Love are making money. They got a guard making some money. They're not paying a lot of guys big money. So, I mean, here's the thing.
Starting point is 00:05:26 They let go of Kenny Clark. Green Bay let go of Kenny Clark, who's an elite interior lineman. And their defense looks better. So that tells you how well they've drafted and developed. They let go of an elite. I mean, you saw Kenny Clark in week one against Philadelphia make an imprint. Kenny Clark's a really good player. He's 30, 31 years old, so he's probably at the end of his peak.
Starting point is 00:05:49 He's a good player. Green Bay gave them up. They're not even playing Micah 70% of the snaps, and they're a dominating defense against the two most efficient offenses in the league last year. Detroit and Washington totally shut them down. Totally discombobulated Jaden Daniels and the Detroit Lions. So this is not a mirage. All right, here we go.
Starting point is 00:06:10 It is time off a winning week. I think it's my first winning week on Blazing Five and week one in like forever. Here we go. That's a hot one. Let's blaze it up. Fire it up. It's Collins, blazing fire. Rams and Titans.
Starting point is 00:06:25 I like the Titans and five and a half points. This is the second lowest total on the board, so it's got a, it's got a, you know, 23, 20 feel to it. I'm going to take the five and a half points. The Titans' mistakes in week one are easy to clean up. They had a lot of drop passes and penalties. But they got a real rush on Bo Nix. They forced Denver into four turnovers.
Starting point is 00:06:47 and the Rams offensive line, two of their top three offensive linemen are banged up. Rams scored on their final drive of the first half and their first drive of the second half. Otherwise, didn't score. So I think this is low scoring. I think the Titans' mistakes against an aggressive, very good defense were understandable for Cam Ward's first game. I think I'm going to take the Titans. I think it's a 2320 game. I'll take the Rams to win, but I'm absolutely taking the five and a half points.
Starting point is 00:07:17 with Tennessee. Seahawks at Steelers. Take the under 40 and a half. Pittsburgh's got too much pride and too much talent to look like they look in week one defensively. They're going to play with their hair on fire defensively. Mike Tomlin had to be humiliated by that. They have too many good players.
Starting point is 00:07:37 And Seattle's offense, it's not going to be a high-powered offense. It's a run-first offense. They don't have a number one receiver. And under Mike McDonald, you know, A. of the 18 games, 20 points or fewer. So last week, Seattle game, that's what Seattle's going to look like. They're going to keep teams in the 23 to 20 range, and they're not going to score a ton of points.
Starting point is 00:07:59 That's not what they are. They don't have the perimeter weapons. So I think Sam Darnold struggled in his last couple of games, come back down to Earth. Take the under 40 and a half points. This feels very 2017, 2017, 2117. I like Seattle to win, but take the under 40 and a half points. Broncos said Colts. I like Denver minus two and a half.
Starting point is 00:08:26 So listen, eight and two against teams that missed the playoffs last year. And Bo Nix has been strangely good on the road. His last four road starts, his passer rating is 107. So I think Daniel Jones, let's not kid ourselves, his last 17 starts, he's four and 13. They played a Miami team that defense. defensively quit. Don't overreact to week one. It was home. Jim Ursay was being celebrated. The Lake Great Owner was a very emotional place. Denver's defense is going to get Daniel Jones off the field very quickly. I like the Broncos to win and cover 27 to 20. Eagles and Chiefs.
Starting point is 00:09:10 I think it's close and low scoring, but I'm going to take Philadelphia to win and cover. Listen, they led 34-0-0 in the third quarter against Kansas City. They've got more good players. They've won 17 of 18 games, including the playoffs. And if Jalen Hertz starts and finishes a game, they've won 15 straight. They're excellent on third down, and they're excellent in the red zone, and they're excellent on fourth down. And that matters on the road in a close game.
Starting point is 00:09:35 They're going to pick up those third and fourth downs. They're going to make plays in the red zone. I think Kansas City comes out with incredible pride, plays over themselves and makes it close. But the Chiefs are two and three in their last five games. Xavier Worthy, if he doesn't play, they don't have a one receiver, they don't have a number two receiver, and Travis Kelsey, they'll probably box him in. I think it's really low scoring.
Starting point is 00:10:02 I think it's close, but I'm going to take Eagles with a late touchdown to win 28 to 20. Giants and Cowboys. I'm taking a prop bet. take CD Lamb over six and a half reception. Okay, he had a miserable week one, three drops. I believe Brian Schottenheimer to build trust with his young receiver, they're going to have a steady dose of CD Lamb, Schottenheimer and Dak are going to say, listen,
Starting point is 00:10:35 we need you, brother. We're going to throw to you 15 times. By the way, he has eaten against the Giants. He averaged 7.4 receptions a game since 2023. That's highest in the league. And again, this is still not a great running back room. It's still a pretty average tight end room. And George Pickens does not separate like C.D. Lamb.
Starting point is 00:10:57 So I think to prove that they trust C.D. Lamb is not going to have three drops. He's played well against the Giants. I'm going to take the over on catches six and a half. I think C.D. Lamb is going to be a primary Dallas target. So take the Titans and the Points, the Broncos and Eagles to cover, the under on the Seahawks Steelers, and C.D. Lamb to have a very, very big game. I saw a quote this morning from Detroit's new offensive coordinator, John Morton. He said, they play the Bears Lions is a very, very interesting early window game. and he's John Morton says we are not in panic mode
Starting point is 00:11:44 John have you seen who you're playing next week you're at Baltimore Baltimore is not in a good mood having lost to Buffalo having controlled the game you can deny you're going to be in panic mode but you got Baltimore next week and then you've got at Joe Burrow
Starting point is 00:12:05 at Mahomes and Baker Mayfield and then Kevin O'Connell and then Jaden Daniels on the road and at Philadelphia, Detroit needs to win. Chicago would like to win, but Chicago's got the Cowboys coming up, the Raiders coming up, and then a buy week. And I also think Detroit's about winning games at this stage in their development. Chicago's about getting Caleb Williams right. So you can deny, it's not panic mode. But I'm going to stay away from this game, but if I had to take aside, I do think urgency matters. And I, I,
Starting point is 00:12:41 I think Detroit is the side here. I think Detroit, you can tell your players, we're not in panic mode. Everybody has a schedule in that locker room. At Baltimore, just put a big L on your little pocket schedule. Put a big L on that one. I think Detroit's going to come out, and it's going to feel like it is a absolute must-win game. Teams can say it's must-win Chicago.
Starting point is 00:13:05 It is for Detroit, or this thing's going to derail fast. You just watch the Packers. You're going to be two games back. You want me two games back by 4 o'clock, you know, Sunday, 0 and 3 seasons done. You're not making the playoffs. So Dave Wonstat joining us next. Be sure to catch live editions of the herd weekdays in noon Eastern, 9 a.m. Pacific on Fox Sports Radio, FS1, and the IHeart Radio app. Hey, what's up, everybody?
Starting point is 00:13:34 It's me, three-time Pro Bowl of LaVar Arrington, and I couldn't be more excited to announce a podcast. called Up on Game. What is Up on Game, you ask? Along with my fellow Pro Bowler, T.J. Hushmanzada and Super Bowl champion. Yep, that's right. Plexico Burris. You can only name a show with that type of talent on it.
Starting point is 00:13:53 Up on Game. We're going to be sharing our real-life experiences, loaded with teachable moments. Listen to Up on Game with me, LaVar Arrington, T.J. Hushman Zada, and Plexico Burris on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcast, wherever you get your podcast from. Hey, it's us, the Jonas Brothers. And guess what? We have some big news.
Starting point is 00:14:17 What's the news, huge news? We created our own podcast called, Hey Jonas. We invented a podcast? Well, we didn't invent it. We just contributed to it. We're the first people to do podcasts.
Starting point is 00:14:28 Pretty, yeah, pretty wide range of podcasts. We're starting a trend. But this one's extra special. So how do we actually come up with a name, Hey Jonas, guys? I honestly don't remember. I think it was on a call about what we should call it. And, well, we were thinking I'm originally calling it one of the early names of our band before Jonas Brothers.
Starting point is 00:14:49 This is how you guys remember it going down? Yes. I have a very different memory of this. We were talking about a thing, a bit for the podcast, where people could call in and say, hey, Jonas. And then I wrote down on my little notepad, Hey Jonas, and offered it up as a potential title for the podcast. But thanks for remembering that, guys. Listen to Hey Jonas on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcast. Just listen. We don't care where you hear it.
Starting point is 00:15:14 Another podcast from some SNL late night comedy guy. Not quite. Unhumor me with Robert Smygel and friends. Me and hilarious guests from Bob Odenkirk to David Letterman help make you funnier. This week, my guest, SNL's Mikey Day and head writer Streeter Seidel. Help an a cappella band with their between songs banter. Where does your group perform? We do some retirement homes. Those people are starving for banter. Listen to humor me with Robert Smigel and Friends on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. The French Open is one of the toughest tests in tennis, and I know firsthand because I competed there myself. I'm Renee Stubbs, and on the Renee Stubbs Tennis podcast, I'm breaking down everything happening at Roland Garris.
Starting point is 00:15:58 Every match, every upset, and what it really takes to win on clay. Jenchian win. I mean, she went down in three to Roebuckina, but I'm delighted. Yeah, she's an outsider. win the French for me. And she likes Clay. Listen, Lena Rubakina is arguably the best player in the world right now and I actually can win on any surface because if she's
Starting point is 00:16:17 serving, well, good luck. Consider this your court side seat to the French Open. Listen to the Renee Stubbs tennis podcast on the IHeart Radio app, Apple podcasts or wherever you get your podcasts. Presented by Capital One, founding partner of IHeart Women's Sports. What's up, I'm FAMISIA Thomas. And I'm C.J. Tolodano
Starting point is 00:16:36 and our podcast Point Game is about defying the odds. like LeBron heading into the playoffs without Luca and Austin Reed. And finding ways to win no matter what. He's the smartest player to ever play the game. His IQ is at a level that we've never seen before. And he knows without Luca and Austin Reeves, I got to manipulate the game. We get a player's perspective on the challenges of the playoffs.
Starting point is 00:16:57 I think Joker's going to be exhausted this series because when they don't have Rudy in the lineup, he has to really guard guys like Nas Reid. He has to guard Julius Randall. And then he has to give us everything. he gives us on the night-to-night basis on offense. And when IT's friends stop by, like Quentin Richardson, we dive into some playoff history too.
Starting point is 00:17:16 Steve Nash would get that thing. That man, hell get the flying. He running up the court, licking his fingers, why he got the ball. Like, after you go through a training camp with that, Isaiah, you figure it out real quick. Get your ass up and down the court, and you're going to get the ball.
Starting point is 00:17:32 So listen to Point Game on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. It just so happens. the stories I'm fascinated about, Dave Wonstat, 39 years coaching NFL in college, is so connected to all of them. And I want to start with Green Bay.
Starting point is 00:17:54 They went and got a college football coach and said, we're going to bring you into coach our defense. And that's not what happens much. You know Jeff Hathley, are you surprised that in an 18-19 game since he arrived, the defense is just noticeably better? No, I'm not because he's got a great background.
Starting point is 00:18:16 Proud to say that I was part of that. But I'm not kidding. But it's kind of a funny story. He was coaching the University of Albany. And when I was the head coach of Pitt, I was one where if a young coach wanted to come down and watch practice or sit in the meetings, I was never one of those guys were secretive.
Starting point is 00:18:33 If these guys want to learn, come in here and learn, right? That's how we all grew up. That's how the Marvallieves and the Marty Schottonheimer's, how they treated me when we wanted to go around and visit. And so Hathley, the defense corner says, this guy's coming in, Jeff Hathley. Watch practice, well, great. So he's in practice, you know, hey, how you doing?
Starting point is 00:18:52 I meet him. Like the next day, I'm getting coffee, and he's standing at the coffee machine. I said, oh, how are you doing? Oh, yeah, how is practice? You learn anything? Oh, yeah, coach, thanks. It's great.
Starting point is 00:19:04 So, okay, let me know. Like a week later, I go to coffee or walk by, And it's Jeff Hathley again. So this is a true story. So don't you know two weeks into spring practice, one of my young coaches leaves. So I go to the defensive coordinator, I says, what's with this Hathley guy?
Starting point is 00:19:26 I said, he's here every day. I says, did somebody offer him a job? We might as well, wait. And he says, well, coach, we got an opening right now. Guy just left. So I said, well, tell Hapley to come down my office. So he came in. I said, listen, you're here every damn day anyway.
Starting point is 00:19:42 We're going to staff meeting in 30 minutes. You're the secondary coach, okay? That's all we get. So then when I leave Pitt, Greg Shiano calls me. Greg's at Rutgers. Greg calls me and says, who's two of your best coaches? And I said, Jeff Hathley and another guy. So Greg hires him at Rutgers.
Starting point is 00:20:01 And then Greg gets a Tampa Bay job, and he goes to the Bucks and gets in the NFL. Yeah. No, I mean, he's done a great job. What jumped out to me, I guess the only thing I'd worry about Green Bay is this. Are they too young to win a Super Bowl? No, absolutely not. No, you know why? Because the younger you are, the less you think about the Super Bowl. I don't think when we won our first Super Bowl, we were the youngest team in the NFL. Dallas was? Dallas. And I don't think Jimmy, I know, not, I don't think, I know Jimmy never
Starting point is 00:20:30 mentioned the word Super Bowl until we were going to the Super Bowl. I mean, it was all about just another game. Getting better. Getting better. And let's keep. practice in and see if we can improve and beat this next team. So sometimes these young players, not naive, isn't the word, but their focus is on, I'm trying to establish
Starting point is 00:20:52 myself in the NFL, and I want, you know, I want some notoriety. They're not thinking Super Bowl as much as the guy says, I got three years left. I mean, it's the ring or nothing. So I think it's a good thing. Be quite on with you. Yeah. The speed is obvious.
Starting point is 00:21:08 So I want to talk, you know, you know, Chicago well. And I had set up during the summer, I said, I almost wonder if you have to make Caleb Williams work. They have failed so many times at quarterback that you're just going to have to give him three years and you're not going to win every game. You may not make the playoffs, but you've got to get this right. And eventually he'll get some things down. Or are you a believer that if it looks like it looks through seven or eight games where he's missing layups and he's running more than he should? I mean, what happens if he's not good this year? What do you do in Chicago?
Starting point is 00:21:42 Yeah, I think I'm not going to go down that road. I live here, okay? So I'm going to say that I think it's going to work because of the style of offense. And head coach Ben said, Ben Johnson said afterwards, who I'm a fan of, he said afterwards, I should have run the ball more. They had 35 passes and only 20 runs. Okay, you know, so how do you help a young quarterback? Everybody knows that.
Starting point is 00:22:07 you take some pressure off them by running the ball, and then those play action passes. I mean, if you're playing Detroit, you know, Ben was at Detroit. When he was there, they were second in the NFL with yards after the catch with our receivers. That was the biggest thing that everybody was excited about here. We're going to have a good play action game and hit these receivers. You see St. Brown and these guys catching on the run. That's because they run first.
Starting point is 00:22:37 Thank you. Exactly. You're right, coach. I mean, that's what they do. They run first. And we came out the very first play of the game, and we lined up under center. I loved it. The runnerback was dotted.
Starting point is 00:22:51 And we went to play action pass, and everybody just dropped into coverage, you know, because we hadn't run the ball. And then he threw the checkdown. Everybody was saying, why didn't he throw it deep? Well, I mean, the checkdown was open. But my point is, what you just said. And Ben said it. We got to run the football.
Starting point is 00:23:10 You've talked about this before. You coached in Miami. You're the last coach in Miami. I was saying this earlier, is that Green Bay today with their speed is what Miami wanted to be three years ago with their speed. The difference is one of them has patience. One of them plays defense. Is that I don't think you and I have ever kind of believed in McDaniel building a culture.
Starting point is 00:23:32 We think he's a smart guy. but they had a players only meeting after week one what does that tell you well that that tells you that they're frustrated that tells you that somebody in their minds is not carrying their end of the load you know there's something missing you got to pick it up that's well you know you get those player meetings that's what usually happens when you did jimmy ever have a player's only meeting in dallas no i don't remember if the play if the players did you know i can't remember one. I can't remember one anywhere I coach Chicago. I mean, they have them, but usually what happens is, hey, come on, we got to pick it up. And they're really saying, Colin, you got to,
Starting point is 00:24:13 you got to play better defense or you got to play better offense. It's never them, okay? It's never the guy talking or calling the meeting. It's always somebody else needs to do a better job. And I don't know, you know, when Miami, we say they were fast and they were explosive, but it still comes down to throw the ball, the score point. run the ball to win games. That's what got the Bears on Sunday. They could not run the ball. Minnesota could.
Starting point is 00:24:40 At the end, when everybody said, okay, we got an even game here, and they knew they were going to run it, and you knew you had to run it. It didn't happen. It didn't happen. But Minnesota did. I go back to the Dolphins game three years ago. Yeah. They're playing Buffalo in the playoffs.
Starting point is 00:24:57 Oh, I remember this. Remember, and a third team quarterback is in there. Skyler Thompson. Thank you. Thank you. Skyler Thompson's in there, who's the third team, and they lose the game to Buffalo, and I look at the stats, and it was 35 passes and 20 runs. And I'm thinking of my, and it was cold.
Starting point is 00:25:16 It was in Buffalo. And a third string quarterback. Third string quarterback. So, I mean, some guys. You told me after that, you kind of, you bail. I was done with it. That was it. I saw everything.
Starting point is 00:25:26 I mean, you know, these guys got to still believe in running the ball. and I think Ben Johnson, back to you, I think he does, because he's proven, you know, three years as Colin plays in Detroit, that he ran the football. And so I think it'll happen. I think it'll be good for Caleb. I really do. I might move him around a little bit more, not, you know, just a little half sprint and let him get the ball out. Everybody gives you that crap.
Starting point is 00:25:51 Oh, we're going to cut the field and half. So what if you're, it's a run pass option for the quarterback. And if you complete some balls to get him some confidence, I don't see a problem with that. I thought Dallas, I wouldn't say shock me, but I, if C.D. Lamb doesn't drop that deep ball. And a C.D. is a good player, so he'll, they're going to go to him again. I had my reservations about Brian Schottenheimer, who hadn't interviewed for head coaching job in 14 years. He's considered sort of an old school offensive guy compared to the new guys. What did you, I mean, I guess my take was this, is that they were buttoned up.
Starting point is 00:26:32 there weren't a lot of penalties. The clock management was good. Is that Brian Schottenheimer allowing his coaches to coach? Because I ever flus can coach defense. But when I watched them, the thing that that kind of took me by surprise was I liked Mike McCarthy,
Starting point is 00:26:47 but there was a lot of penalties. I didn't like clock management. Schottenheimer, I thought that Dallas looked buttoned up to me. They did and they were. He's got a lot of experience. You know, his dad was an outstanding coach in the NFL Marty.
Starting point is 00:27:02 for years. So he's been around good people. And you mentioned Matt Eberfluse. Matt Eberfluse is a ex-head coach. So you've got a guy that you're coordinator that you know can call defense. And he knows what a head coach needs. He knows what a head coach needs, somebody to bounce some things off of. So, and I think Jerry deep down really, really wants us to be successful and wants this to work. And I think that the players feel right now, they've got a young enough team, they've turned it over. They've got pretty good guys.
Starting point is 00:27:38 They've got young guys. Anybody that was a potential rough, you know, rough the feathers type of guy, I think is gone. So they get a good young team. And if DAC stays healthy and plays good, you're going to see them win some of those games that they had a chance to win against Philadelphia. So one of the teams that really,
Starting point is 00:27:57 It was just did not look very good, was New England. And I defended them. I said, first of all, they spent $300 million in free agency, so there's a lot of new starters. You didn't play those guys in the preseason. Right. They're a young roster, so they're going to play more draft picks than your good teams. So my takeaway was they didn't look good because I could argue there's no team in the league
Starting point is 00:28:22 that has more new starters and new players, which years ago in week three of the preseason, and you play them half the game. Right. Nobody plays starters. So week one of the NFL season for a team with new players, it's going to get ugly. I mean, there were some, I mean, like, it's just the way it looks. Go back to your Jimmy days with you and Jimmy in Dallas
Starting point is 00:28:45 or any place you've been in year one when it's new players, and especially college where you don't have a preseason. Do you think New England eventually the chess pieces work? Were you ever at a place? where you knew you were better than the result in week one or week two. You just knew you had new schemes. You had new playbook. You had new coordinators.
Starting point is 00:29:05 Is that a real thing? Absolutely. And I think the worst thing Vable could do is win too many too soon because he's got a good young team. You know what I mean? So I would not be concerned if I was a Patriots fan one bit. I mean, you've got the quarterback, the running back. You got pieces in place, got a good head coach.
Starting point is 00:29:25 no I would not worry about that whatsoever you know you didn't play as well as you wanted to and didn't win the game I get that but I got no reservation that'd be the last team I mean they better beat Miami this week I mean that's who they got I think the Dolphins played a Patriots right? Yeah, it's down in Miami
Starting point is 00:29:45 and that is you talk about a must game for the dolphins a must game in Miami and and what is it half a point or a point and a half Yeah. I was, you know, that makes me nervous if you're a Dolphins fan. It truly does because if New England turns it on, which they're going to at some point and starts getting it together.
Starting point is 00:30:05 They have players. They got players. I want to go back to the Chicago Bears because I live here now, and I'm here a lot. I'm in L.A. about seven, eight weeks a year. But it is fascinating to listen to talk radio in this town. Cubs and Bears, that's the topics. That's it. That's it.
Starting point is 00:30:23 it's cubs and bears and um you know you coached in miami which was a more transient town and then you coached in dallas where talk radio and the newspaper guys were aggressive and one of the things i think about one of the advantages to being in green bay it's not a big media the fans are loyal um you don't have a crazy impulsive owner there's an advantage to be green bay you can draft and develop you can sit jordan love for three years right like that's an advantage in an era where all these owners are billionaires now and they just think $45 million to fire a coach is a rounding air they don't care so green bay in this world we live in now it's an advantage they don't have a lot of crazy around the organization but as i drive around chicago and listen to sports talk radio
Starting point is 00:31:07 it's harsh it's urgent and i know owners listen and i know i know i know people in football listen when you were coaching the bears was it different than coaching the dolphins the city it's northern It's not as transient. Yep. Oh, big difference. I mean, did you... Pittsburgh. I've coached in Pittsburgh.
Starting point is 00:31:27 I've coached in Chicago. I mean, you know, they're tough, loud. They study this football. They live it. It's important. On a weekend, I mean, they live their lives through their teams. You know, and Miami, my second year at the first year,
Starting point is 00:31:45 we're in the division of the Dolphin's second year, go to playoffs. We didn't sell out our stadium for a playoff game. And the first person who bought a ticket was some lady from Detroit, you know, that was down her visiting. I mean, I remember they had it in the paper. And I said, you think this is whatever happened in Chicago or Pittsburgh? No, it is a different mentality. And I noticed it here, and I've lived here six months, five months.
Starting point is 00:32:07 Yeah. It is intense. The coverage is intense here. Yeah. And try getting a ticket to a Blackhawks game, too, for hockey. You'll see that when you're here in the winter. I mean, it's, it's a tough sports time. and it is what it is.
Starting point is 00:32:22 I think it's just that blue-colley mentality, you know. They're tough. Finally, I want to ask an Oregon question. Oregon plays Northwestern. That's a big noon kickoff game for Fox Sports. I was lucky enough. I covered Oregon as they were exploding as a program. I covered the Joey Harrington team.
Starting point is 00:32:42 I was a sportscaster at KGW and Portland. So I was very lucky that I can remember being on the field. You know, looking at Phil Knight, he's got tears in his eyes. You know, and they won the Civil War, and they were going to go to the Rose Bowl. And I always thought one of the advantages to Oregon that Penn State and USC and Michigan and Notre Dame don't have is Oregon had no tradition. So Oregon could say, we're going to have 20 helmets. We're going to have 50 uniforms. We're going to hire a guy from New Hampshire and Chip Kelly that doesn't believe in huddles.
Starting point is 00:33:16 Penn State put names on the back of uniforms a few years ago. They took them off two years later. Right, right. Notre Dame, Lincoln Riley suggested that USC dropped the Notre Dame game. There was outrage. Yes. Oregon is so fascinating to me, coach, because they didn't have tradition. So they created their own.
Starting point is 00:33:36 It's like a study in great business. When you, as a guy who's you coached at SC and the Miami Hurricanes, how do you view Oregon football as they play Northwestern this week? Well, you know, if you really think about it, and Dan Lenning's done an unbelievable, they only got one returning star on offense from last 15. Think about that. The last three years, they've been in the top five in recruiting high school and portal. Now think about that.
Starting point is 00:34:01 There's three Division I football players in Oregon on an annual basis, the state of Oregon. So they have to leave the state to convince you to go there. National, national. You look at their roster, and the thing that's happened when they first came, all these packed, and I've been doing Big Ten football here for years, you know that. And when all of these Pack 12 teams, the Oregon's, the U.S.Cs, came to the Big Ten, everybody was talking about, are they going to be physical enough? You're talking about Big Ten football as compared to the fast game, the basketball game.
Starting point is 00:34:37 Finesse, fast. Of the West Coast. Well, Oregon last year wins the Big Ten. Okay. and they proved that they could be as physical as anybody. Well, now they might be, if you look at every team around the country, they're about as fast and maturing team as anybody. I mean, they're a lot better than anybody thought.
Starting point is 00:34:58 Yeah. And talent-wise, they have talent on all levels a lot more than anybody thought. He convinced their quarterback, Dante Moore, to sit a year. So he sat, he was on the roster last year. He transferred from UCLA. That's right. He's sitting on the roster, not playing, just watching Dylan Gabriel. He was a five-star, like number one quarterback country kind of player.
Starting point is 00:35:24 They convinced him to sit and watch and learn. And he did that behind Gabriel. And now he's the guy who's completing 77% of his passes. I mean, so they have a culture. They got great support. We know that. And Dan Lennon does a great job of getting players and coaching these guys. And I tell you what, Oregon, and we got Ohio State and you got Penn State.
Starting point is 00:35:51 And I get it. But I think right now today, I was saying this. If you told me top five programs on the country, I'd probably put Oregon four or five. At the low, coach, I might put them higher than that. Ohio State, Bama, Georgia, Oregon. I'm putting them ahead of. I won't buck Ohio State. but I would definitely put them ahead of Alabama or anybody.
Starting point is 00:36:13 Right now. Right now. It's an incredible story. Right now. I mean, it's just funny that when I was part of, you know, not part of it, but when I covered them, they had such a freedom because they had no history. So they could just do whatever they wanted. They were totally outside of the box.
Starting point is 00:36:30 And you look up 15 years later and you're like, they are a top five program. And, you know, when we first went to the NFL, I remember Al Davis, we would always work against the Raiders. First year we went out there to California for training camp, where the Cowboys used to go. And Al Davis used to talk about, we have to get, at that time, you know, San Diego Chargers,
Starting point is 00:36:52 with Dan Fowles and joined those guys, they were speed, speed. How are we going to beat the Chargers? We've got to match their speed. So the Raiders started transforming a little bit to the fast wide receivers. The matchup wouldn't be able to do what the Chargers did. Okay. Oregon comes in here and they say,
Starting point is 00:37:11 this is power football. Well, now all of a sudden, after last year, the Big Ten's looking around saying, you know what, we've got to be as, if we're going to beat these guys and win, we've got to be as fast as Oregon. We're going to be as fast as Oregon.
Starting point is 00:37:23 So you talk about tradition and a little bit of transformation. There's that going on a little bit. If you look close in the Big Ten. Yep. Dave Wanstad. Great seeing you. Good seeing you, too.
Starting point is 00:37:33 You're going to take me out to dinner next week, one of your haunts. I'm going to go, I'm going to prep a place for us tonight. It'll be warm. Your seat will be warm. Dude some scouting. It's the herd. Hey, it's us, the Jonas Brothers. And guess what? We have some big news.
Starting point is 00:37:48 What's the news, name? Huge news. We created our own podcast called, Hey Jonas. We invented a podcast. Well, we didn't invent it. We just contributed to it. We're the first people to do podcasts. Pretty, yeah, pretty wide range of podcasts. We're starting a trend. But this one's extra special. So how do we actually come up with a name Hey Jonas, guys? I honestly don't remember. I think it was on a call about what we should call it.
Starting point is 00:38:11 Oh, we were thinking I'm originally calling it one of the early names of our band. Before Jonas Brothers was... This is how you guys remember it going down? Yes. I have a very different memory of this. We were talking about a thing, a bit for the podcast, where people could call in and say, Hey, Jonas. And then I wrote down on my little notepad, Hey Jonas,
Starting point is 00:38:31 and offered it up as a potential title for the podcast. But thanks for remembering that, guys. Listen to Hey Jonas on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcast. Just listen. We don't care where you hear it. Another podcast from some SNL, late-night comedy guy, not quite. Unhumor me with Robert Smygel and friends. Me and hilarious guests from Bob Odenkirk to David Letterman help make you funnier.
Starting point is 00:38:55 This week, my guest, SNL's Mikey Day and head writer Streeter Seidel. Help an Acapella band with their Between Songs banter. Where does your group perform? We do some retirement homes. Those people are starving for banter. Listen to humor me with Robert Smigel and Friends on the I-Heart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. The French Open is one of the toughest tests in tennis, and I know firsthand because I competed there myself. I'm Renee Stubbs, and on the Renee Stubbs Tennis podcast, I'm breaking down everything happening at Roland Garris.
Starting point is 00:39:28 Every match, every upset, and what it really takes to win on clay. Jen Chinch win. I mean, she went down at three to. Rabakina, but I'm delighted. She's an outsider to win the French for me. And she likes Clay. Listen, Lena Rubakina is arguably the best player in the world right now. And I actually can win on any surface.
Starting point is 00:39:47 Because if she's serving, well, good luck. Consider this your court side seat to the French Open. Listen to the Renee Stubbs Tennis podcast on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Presented by Capital One, founding partner of IHeart Women's Sports. What's up, fam? This is Isaiah Thomas. And I'm CJ Toledano and our podcast Point Game is about defying the odds.
Starting point is 00:40:09 Like LeBron heading into the playoffs without Luca and Austin Reed. And finding ways to win no matter what. He's the smartest player to ever play the game. His IQ is at a level that we've never seen before. And he knows without Luca and Austin Reeves, I got to manipulate the game. We get a player's perspective on the challenges of the playoffs. I think Joker's going to be exhausted this series
Starting point is 00:40:31 because when they don't have Rudy in the lineup, he has to really guard guys like Nas Reid. He has to guard Julius Randall. And then he has to give us everything he gives us on the night-to-night basis on offense. And when IT's friends stop by, like Quentin Richardson, we dive into some playoff history too. Steve Nass would get that thing.
Starting point is 00:40:49 That man, hell get the flying. He running up the court, licking his fingers why he got the ball like, after you go through a training camp with that, Isaiah, you figure it out real quick. Get your ass up and down the court, and you're going to get the ball. So listen to Point Game on the,
Starting point is 00:41:03 iHeart radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Fox College Football Friday is under the lights in prime time. This week, it's a big 12 showdown as K-State takes on Arizona tonight at 9 Eastern on Fox. Urban Meyer and Jason's picks next hour, but here's J-Mac with the news. No, no, no, no, turn on the news. This is the herd line news. Can I just say I do laugh when you call me Jason? I'm sorry.
Starting point is 00:41:39 That's not like my kids. Anyways, let's start with the big game on Sunday on Fox, the Chiefs and the Eagles. Super Bowl rematch. We know Philly dominated them back in February. And Rob Grunkowski believes the Eagles have provided a blueprint for beating Mahomes. I feel like a lot of teams last year had that fear. Oh, I can't swing on the Chiefs.
Starting point is 00:42:02 We can't give them our best shot. The Philadelphia Eagles punched them in the face. The Chiefs didn't know how to react to that because no one else was doing that. While going into this year now, the Los Angeles charges punched them in the face. The Chiefs were like, whoa, they're coming at us. How do we react? Well, they didn't know how to react because no one was doing that before. So the Philadelphia Eagles opened that floodgate of, hey, if you punch these guys in the face,
Starting point is 00:42:24 you take it to him. You come out swinging. They're going to fold and they're not going to be the team that you've been seeing all last year. Well, what Kansas City can't do, J-Mack, what they can't do, is get into track meets. They just don't have the offensive firepower. So there was always with Mahomes multiple ways to win. Kansas City has become one of those teams where there's one way to win,
Starting point is 00:42:45 and that is low-scoring, situational. If the game gets away from them, if I told you Philadelphia had a 14-0 lead through seven minutes, you'd be like, game over. That's not what they're built for. So the teams that don't win Super Bowls usually are teams that have limited routes to success. Green Bay can win a lot of ways. Philadelphia can win a lot of ways.
Starting point is 00:43:07 Buffalo, Baltimore can win a lot of ways. I don't think Kansas City is in that group anymore. I would totally agree. I'm looking at the old injury report, Cowherd. Landon Dickerson, really talented guard. Remember, he got, I think, poked in the eye in the opener against Dallas, didn't return, did not practice earlier this week, but he's back now. That's huge for Philly.
Starting point is 00:43:27 Dallas Goddard is the other guy to watch the tight end. He's good. Like, I don't know if he's Tucker Kraft good. Ha, ha, just kidding. but I just like this Eagles roster. I think I'm with you on the Eagles, man. Listen, if KC starts O and 2, I mean, are we opening the show Monday? It's over.
Starting point is 00:43:43 The dynasty's done. Well, it's called trade deadline. That's when they have to go out and go, okay, listen. Because Xavier Worthy, if he doesn't play this week, we'll play the following week. But then you've got three, four more weeks of Rashid Rice. So you start looking at the schedule. I mean, I think is that panicky, though? I don't think upgrading a week receiving core run room is panic.
Starting point is 00:44:06 I think panic is Baltimore losing the Buffalo and making a huge trade in two weeks. That's panic. This is not panic for Kansas City. This is what they are. I mean, they're going to win. They're going to beat New York. Wait. They've got the Ravens coming up and then they have to go to the Jags.
Starting point is 00:44:23 So it's like they need to win this week. So again, they're going to beat New York. Let's just take a deep breath. Look at that, Colin. The New York game is a sandwich spot. Okay, you go Brazil, Super Bowl rematch, and then Lamar Jackson. You're not even thinking about the Giants. And that front seven could.
Starting point is 00:44:41 Remember, they get Jaden Daniels some problems. They could wreck that offensive line. I mean, Jawan Taylor is a nightmare on the right side. He's not good. I think Nolan Smith is going to own him again this week. I'm just, I think we're going to have some nervous Chiefs fans if this game is close in the fourth quarter. And listen, my prediction of no playoffs,
Starting point is 00:44:59 somebody's going to be puffing their chest out. That's for sure, Colin, should they lose again. Let's move on to Micah Parsons last night. Can't stop talking enough about this domination. Look at that move, man. You're doubling Micah, and he's still getting to the quarterback? I love this. After the game, Micah joined the Amazon crew,
Starting point is 00:45:18 and hundreds, not dozens, hundreds of fans were chanting, thank you, Jerry, thank you. Listen, I think that's exciting. and Micah talked about his week four matchup with the Cowboys. My family and everyone is looking forward to it, but I'm going to especially action talk. And I ain't got no rap. You know, it's just going to be funny because all my friends are there.
Starting point is 00:45:42 All my friends are there. All my, you know. Well, Zee and, you know, Charlie was the happiest guy here in T. Smith. So just going against those guys, it's going to be heartbreakers. Well, damn, I'm excited for the month. No matter who it is, it could be the best. tackle, you're all pro, I got to go win, I have to win now,
Starting point is 00:46:01 and that's just der rage in me like I'm pissed off. Yeah. Well, also, it's such a great move for Micah, because Green Bay didn't need first round picks like a lot of teams. I mean, if you watch Green Bay play,
Starting point is 00:46:18 Micah was the missing piece, the great playmaker on the edge. They're fine everywhere else. Where you look at Dallas, Micah was this, you know, a $10 million dollar chandelier in an empty mansion like they don't have enough players so i mean i still contend people overreacted i think it's a good move for dallas to get four first round picks in the next two years
Starting point is 00:46:37 they can do whatever they want remember when you have first round picks those can become second and third additional picks because you can trade down because dac's not going anywhere so if dallas wins six games this year and they have the eighth pick that first can become the 11th pick and you just added a second second pick so four first first first first round picks gives you insane when you don't need a quarterback. And they have DAC for four more years under contract. It gives Dallas incredible leverage because when you watch the Ravens and the Packers and the Eagles, Dallas's roster is not close to that.
Starting point is 00:47:14 Yeah, I'm sorry. I got to disagree. I don't, when I'm watching Micah just wreck Connerley on the right and he got, he had his way with Tunsell a few times as well. And remember, he went against Penae Sua last week. Okay, he's already facing top left tackles and he's winning. How did Jerry not get more, Colin? Well, you're watching.
Starting point is 00:47:32 How did you not get more from Micah Parsons? Like, he looks generational. I know the playoff numbers haven't been great, but I'm just telling you, watching these first two weeks, not at 100% and wrecking offensive lines and game plans? Well, it also helps that Green Bay in the first two weeks has gotten off to huge leagues. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:47:50 So Micah Parsons, who's mostly a C-ball, attack ball kind of defender, is on that edge. Remember, edge rushers are like closers in baseball. The lead matters. You know, the great closers coming in trailing don't matter. The great pass rushers, you know, Miles Garrett, a lot of teams that play Cleveland are going to be running the ball late in games because they lead the Cleveland Browns.
Starting point is 00:48:14 So Micah going to a team with a lead, especially in the first couple of quarters, it's a perfect spot for him. And, oh, by the way, you know what else you don't do? You know those awesome closers in baseball? You don't trade them, okay? Jerry just traded a superstar. Final story, Colin, the Denver Broncos. They did not look great in week one, despite the dub.
Starting point is 00:48:35 Bo Nix was quite putrid, three turnovers. Heading into week two, Sean Payton took responsibility for the poor play and knows he's got to improve his play calling. When a game ends and you evaluate it, and then you say, all right, how were we with the details? You know, we're fairly young. And so if we feel like the answer isn't maybe up to what we want, then we've got to look at how much, I don't know how many games I've called. But that's one of those where, you know, it came away from it.
Starting point is 00:49:06 Like, man, I've got to be a lot better. I like that. I do. Just a quick note, not great for the Colts. So Latu, Latu, the guy from UCLA, I hope I got his name right. It sounds like he's not going to play due to a concussion. He graded out as the number one edge rusher in the NFL last week. Colts, that was two years ago.
Starting point is 00:49:28 And the Colts, he was the first defensive player drafted that draft. Do you remember that? He's good. No, he may not have been the first defensive player. Maybe he was. But he basically fell to the Colts. And then Chris Ballard said, yeah, he was the number one graded edge rusher in the whole draft. We're drafted in the middle of the first round.
Starting point is 00:49:45 And that guy's usually out in the top seven or eight picks of a draft. So he's been really UCLA kid, very good for them. Sharvera, Schaefter just announced Sharverius Ward, the top cornerback on the Colts, will not play this weekend. I'm telling you, I like the Broncos a lot. That's a great pick by you. J-Mack with the news.
Starting point is 00:50:04 Well, that's the news. And thanks for stopping by. The Herd-Ly News. I'm going to die on that hill that Micah Parsons, short-term, is going to look like the Cowboys got worked in that trade. But come late April next year, and Dallas has two first round picks and doesn't need a quarterback, and it's a great quarterback draft.
Starting point is 00:50:27 Jerry and Stephen Jones can take that number eight pick or nine pick, move down and get another second and a third. Watch what happened. Now, Green Bay is going to win the trade the first year, because Mike and Green Bay are good. This trade, wait until late April. Cowboys going to pick up a lot of good players, and that's what they need, not just a great edge rush.
Starting point is 00:50:49 Hour three on a Friday, Hey guys, it's us. The Jonas Brothers. I'm Joe. I'm Kevin. And I'm Nick. And guess what? We created our own podcast called, Hey Jonas.
