Starting point is 00:00:00 This is an I-Heart podcast. Guaranteed Human. Another podcast from some SNL, late-night comedy guy, not quite. Unhumor me with Robert Smygel and friends. Me and hilarious guests from Bob Odenkirk to David Letterman help make you funnier. This week, my guest, SNL's Mikey Day and head writer Streeter Seidel, help an a cappella band with their between songs banter.
Starting point is 00:00:23 Where does your group perform? We do some retirement homes. Those people are starving for banter. Listen to humor me with Robert Smigel and friends on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Imagine an Olympics where doping is not only legal, but encouraged. It's the enhanced games. Some call it grotesque.
Starting point is 00:00:42 Others say it's unleashing human potential. Either way, the podcast's Superhuman documented it all, embedded in the games and with the athletes for a full year. Within probably 10 days, I'd put on 10 pounds. I was having trouble stopping the muscle growth. Listen to Superhuman on the IHard Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Hey, what's good, y'all? You're listening to Learn the Hard Way with your favorite therapist and host, Kear Games.
Starting point is 00:01:10 This space is about black men's experiences, having honest conversations that it's really not safe to have anywhere, but you're having them with a licensed professional who knows what he's doing. How many men carry a suit or armor it? It signals to the world that you're not to be played with. And just because you have the capability that does not mean that you need to. Listen and learn the hard way on the IHard radio app, Apple Podcast, or wherever you get your podcast. Thanks for listening to The HARD podcast. Be sure to catch us live every weekday on Fox Sports Radio in noon to 3 Eastern, 9 a.m. to noon Pacific. Find your local station for the herd at Fox SportsRedio.com
Starting point is 00:01:48 Or stream us live every day on the IHart Radio app by searching Fox Sports Radio or FSR. Now let's get this party started. You're listening to Fox Sports Radio. Here we go. Five minutes away from our Blazing Five, live in Los Angeles. It's the hurt. Wherever you may be, however you may be listening. Thank you for making us part of your day.
Starting point is 00:02:14 For the record, that weird incident yesterday we had on our show. Remember that thing we talked about? Terry Stott's, the assistant coach in Milwaukee, was Dame's coach for years, got along great in Portland. There was an incident. So apparently the head coach, the new first year head coach, and Stats, the coach had called like a meeting, he wanted to separate players from coaches. Stats wasn't listening to him. They had sort of a confrontation according to Shams.
Starting point is 00:02:38 Boom. Stats is like I'm out of here. A lot of pressure in Milwaukee. That's an old team. They got a win now. Boston has to win, but they got like four-year runway with Drew, Jason, Jalen. They got a long runway. I love when you bring me stuff I had not seen.
Starting point is 00:02:53 I'm so locked in on the NFL. I didn't even see this update. Thank you for that, Colin. Can you bring me some winners with the Blazine 5? I'm going to try to. I'm here to provide economic stimulus for America. All right. Last week, two and three, chargers.
Starting point is 00:03:06 We both lost on chargers. Discouraging. Here we go. Here's our Blazing 5. That's a hot one. Let's blaze it up. Fire it up. It's Collins, Blazing 5.
Starting point is 00:03:16 Lions and Ravens. I'm going to take the Ravens minus 3 at home. Jim Harbaugh is a monster as a home favorite, 82 and 26. Do you know only the Niners have spent more time leading football games this year than Baltimore? Number five rushing offense, number four scoring defense, and Lamar is on fire. Second highest-granted quarterback, according to PFF. Their defense has been tremendous all year. Star quarterback, great coach, at home.
Starting point is 00:03:47 Defense is playing with a tear on fire, and the Lions are missing some players. David Montgomery, Sam Leportez banged up. This is a really good game watching on Fox. I'll take the Ravens to win in cover and a battle between two excellent teams 2721. Commanders and Giants. I'll take the Giants plus three, hear me out. They play the second hardest schedule. They're not good, but they face Dallas and Buffalo and Tyrod Taylor, who I prefer,
Starting point is 00:04:15 who doesn't make mistakes and manages the game, is going to play. I like that. The commanders are the story, though, lost three of four, worst point differential by any team 500 or better. There's a lot to not like. 30 plus points allowed in four or five games, and that's with a defensive head coach. Sam Howe on pace to be the most sack quarterback
Starting point is 00:04:38 for a single season in league history. The Giants will get to him a lot. Tyrod Taylor limitations, but smart doesn't make a ton of mistakes. I like the Giants in the upset. Not a huge upset. They're at home. 24-23 over Washington.
Starting point is 00:04:57 Chargers at Chiefs. Upset of the week. Chargers plus five and a half to win straight out. Every game this year, they don't get blown out, especially against the Chiefs. Justin Herbert has had some of his best games against Kansas City. The only team to outscore their opponents and have a losing record in the league is the Chargers. They had Miami and the Cowboys beat. Their defense tied for third in the league in sacks. Again, 18 TDs, four picks and a 107 passer rating.
Starting point is 00:05:26 That's Herbert getting healthier against the Chiefs. He's been great. The Chiefs are averaging almost five points a game less. Mahomes career lows across the board. He's struggling to connect with receivers. That's why they went out and got another receiver. They lead the NFL in drops. They're winning because of Andy and Mahomes, but they're not playing well.
Starting point is 00:05:48 There's an upset or two every week. I got the Chargers 27. the Chiefs 26. Dolphins and Eagles. I'll take Philly minus two and a half to win and cover at home. Listen, the offensive line Lane Johnson's going to play. It's a top three offensive line against the weak Miami defensive line. This is a time of possession game, and Jalen Hertz, last 13 home games, has been remarkable.
Starting point is 00:06:13 32 touchdown, six picks. The dolphins are a little bit of a speedboat in a mirage. easiest schedule in the NFL by far. 26-ranked scoring defense. Opposing quarterbacks are getting 99 passer ratings. So what's Jalen Hertz behind that online and those weapons and A.J. Brown and Devonthe Smith, what's he going to get at home? I don't buy Miami like everybody else.
Starting point is 00:06:38 Philadelphia wins 3124 and controls the game. One more. 3124 Philadelphia. 49ers and Vikings. Monday night football. Kirk Cousin shrinking. Tell me if you've heard about it before. 49ers minus 7, I'll take it.
Starting point is 00:07:00 Off a loss. They are dinged up, missed field goals, horrible officiating. Now they get an extra day to get healthy. Always benefits the better team and the great coach. McCaffrey, Trent Williams, Debo, Greenlaw, number one scoring defense. Quarterbacks passer rating average, 67. Fewest big plays allowed.
Starting point is 00:07:20 This is a great defense that's ticked off that they lost last week, and now they're getting healthier. The Vikings have beaten Chicago and Carolina. Their offense has 13 giveaways. Justin Jefferson's out. They don't do anything down the field. And Kirk Cousins against playoff teams in his career, 13 and 41, he's bad in prime time, and this just isn't a playoff team. It's the most talented team in the NFL.
Starting point is 00:07:46 bounce back for the Niners. Relatively close early, Minnesota at home. It's loud. It's Monday night. But eventually second half, they pound away at a BB gun offense. No Dalvin Cook, no Justin Jefferson, for different reasons. They're out. One's on IR.
Starting point is 00:08:02 One got traded to the Jets. 3,120 San Francisco. Jamack? What do you make of it? I love it in the Niners pick. I'm with you there. Loving the Eagles pick. I'm with you there.
Starting point is 00:08:13 I do have to say, had a numbers guy on my podcast. week, he makes the Chiefs line minus nine. Now, this is just the numbers. Only what we've seen so far this season makes the Chiefs minus nine. Why is the spread five and a half? Something's up here. Either Chargers are getting blasted or you're going to be right. That game
Starting point is 00:08:30 is, I'm staying away from Chiefs Chargers. You know, the Chargers have their issues. I get it. They don't get blown out. They don't. And they never, they always play Kansas City well. Chiefs off extra time to prepare. Chargers short week. That could spell doom for Brandon's day. This could get ugly. And I know the Chiefs don't make much ugly, but
Starting point is 00:08:46 scary one. They're not scoring points. We'll see. All right. Greg Jennings, 10 years, 7 with the Packers, now at Fox Sports. Pro Bowler, multiple times, Super Bowl champ. All right. So I said this weekend that if teams are honest, intellectually honest, the Giants weren't.
Starting point is 00:09:07 They reached for Daniel Jones and then tried to prove they were right by paying him. And now look at the Giants. I would rather Tyrod Taylor, he's starting this one. weekend. I'd take Tyrod over Daniel Jones. Is that in this league, Greg, people make mistakes. Coaches, players, GMs. You just have to own them and move off them.
Starting point is 00:09:26 Jordan Love right now. First half's worst in the league. Lowest completion percentage. This is an awful Denver defense. He's had extra time to prepare. If he lays an egg, does Green Bay have to look in the mirror and go, okay, this is
Starting point is 00:09:41 he had extra time against the Raiders defense. struggled. Extra time now against the Denver defense, worst in league history statistically. Would you be concerned, Greg, if he lays an egg? Yeah, I would be concerned because of the reasons that you just laid out. When you have extra time, you tend to understand and have more information to pull from as far as what to expect of your opponent and what really will work well for you offensively and what suits the guys that are potentially going to dress and play in that game so that you can have success.
Starting point is 00:10:17 If the Green Bay Packers struggling, Jordan loves struggles offensively, and he has all its weapons, Aaron Jones is available, Christian Watson and Dobbs and all these guys are available and they play with a full roster of personnel around him, then you're going to have a lot of questions because in the season, you don't get time to prepare for teams after a buy like this every single week. And as you mentioned, the last two weeks, they've had extended periods of time to prepare for their opponents, which typically affords the team that has the most time, the better outcome. With Jordan Love, what I sense is kind of similar to when Aaron Rogers took over and it was us.
Starting point is 00:10:57 Like, there was a sense of he was our guy. We knew he was our guy. Jordan Love, I think they're in question of whether or not he is the guy. There's going to be roller coasters, though, Colin. Like, they're going to have to learn how to win. It can't be right now all about Jordan Love in that passing game. They got to get more production out of the run and put him in great positions to where they look great or look better when he's throwing the ball. We were talking about Justin Fields earlier.
Starting point is 00:11:25 So Justin Fields got a banged up thumb. And I want you to take me how a player thinks. So the Bears, right now, I think they have the first and second pick or first and third. And I think because of Caleb Williams and Drake May being A prospects, you have to. to draft one. They have two picks up there. One of them, if you have a court, unless you have Lamar Jackson, Josh Allen, Mahomes, Burrow, Herbert, Jalen Hertz, seven eight guys in the league, Trevor Lawrence, you have to take a quarterback. It's almost you, you're not going to have Drake, May and Caleb are two A's. These aren't like big, tall, move, fast, successful,
Starting point is 00:12:03 productive. Is Justin Fields do you think talking him himself into plank, not getting surgery, because reportedly he didn't want to get surgery. You think that's the Bears saying, go ahead, sit down, we'll go with a backup. Or is that Justin Field saying, hey, I'm not stupid. I see Caleb Williams. I got to produce here, or it's over for me. What do you think it is? Come on.
Starting point is 00:12:28 It's the ladder. Like, guys aren't foolish. Like, we understand how this league works. If you're not available, they can overlook you and look into the future without you. I don't care where you were drafted, especially in Justin Fields case, when you have, you've offered up so much to retain him going into this season and to put pieces around him. And part of these first few games, it's been like, what are we doing? Did we make the right decision?
Starting point is 00:12:55 Then you see C.J. Stroud having success. We all understand what Bryce Young is up against. But in Richardson over with the Colts, like they've had glimmer of success. And it's like Justin Fields is in that same category. of just now starting to turn over that engine. You can't have that when you're a three and four year guy. And so moving into this offseason, if the bears continue to struggle,
Starting point is 00:13:19 which I presume that they will, like Justin Fields understands, like these quarterbacks are guarantees almost. That's what everybody's saying. They're guarantees. And nothing is a guarantee, but Caleb Williams and how he looks and Drake May, these guys look really good and very promising.
Starting point is 00:13:35 You can build around that. And you haven't paid it. Justin Fields yet. You wouldn't have had to pay these guys. It allows you to continue to build and be in pretty much the same situation and possibly get something for Justin Fields if he doesn't work out. But if I'm a player, absolutely. I got to get back on the field because I got to prove that I am the guy and that I am worthy of getting the money that is to come if I perform to standard. So I like watching Miami play. But when they went up and got worked at heard you earlier. You think they're fools
Starting point is 00:14:10 gold. Yeah, and let me tell you something. A lot of teams look good in Miami, in sunny weather, and then the NFL hits, and it's called Thanksgiving, and it's called Philadelphia, and it's called physicality. There's a lot of corners that look great against you
Starting point is 00:14:26 in September. November, it's cold in Chile, and you're out there as a big receiver, muslin them for balls, and my takeaway is, this is a physical league. I like Miami. I don't love Miami. Did you ever face a team like Miami that was the sports car of the league? But you knew deep down, glass chin, glass chin. Because that's what I see. Yeah, we felt that way about a lot of the Atlanta
Starting point is 00:14:53 Falcons team. Offensively, they had a lot of weapons. Like, they could, they would look great. They're in the dome. And then you get them into your climate and your weather and deep into the season. It's like they're fragile. They're like tissue paper. But what I like about the Miami Dolphins that no one really identifies them as is they can run the football. Like they lead the league in passing. They lead the league in rushing because they understand who they are. They have to open up their run game by passing the football. And that's what they do with Tyree Kiel.
Starting point is 00:15:22 You're so afraid of the big play, it allows you to turn around if you're to, hand the ball off and you have your guys behind you getting chunk plays. Now, they're missing guys going into this game this week. But I still like the Miami Dolphins because they've been able to do it on both sides as far as not defensively. I don't like them defensively. That's a question mark, but when you're going up against the Philadelphia Eagles, they're acting
Starting point is 00:15:46 as though they don't understand their true identity is running the football and to stay on brand. And so, I like the Miami Dolphins in this week's game. Whoa. So I do. Well, that's okay. So what do you make so in Green Bay, you had
Starting point is 00:16:02 Farr, you had you, you had Driver, you had James Jones, you had Aaron Rogers, everybody was an A. When you look at Brock Purdy and you see Debo and Iyuk and Kiddell and Williams. Just as a former player, do you think he's, do you think he's a star or do you think it's one of these
Starting point is 00:16:18 ain't paying him anything? He's got weapons. Because you can't fool players. What do you see with Brock Purdy? So I like what I see with Brock Party. I think the difference when it comes to like our situation is like Aaron Rogers, we
Starting point is 00:16:34 truly knew he was a passer. He was a thrower of the He can do all the things. He possessed all the tools. It looked like he passed the test when you knew what he was able to do and you watched them play. And in our case, when we were on the practice field with him. That's the same that these guys talk about about Brock Purdy.
Starting point is 00:16:55 However, for us watching, I think these last two weeks, the Cleveland game when a couple of guys got banged up, D.Bow and Chris McCaffrey, I felt like he missed an opportunity to show the world and everyone watching. we can still win this game because of me, and he had one of his worst performances. He can't continue to do that. It can't continue to be about all the other guys. Now, I get it. You always build around the guys that you have, and he has the luxury of goods around him,
Starting point is 00:17:23 and he needs to have that right now because he's a young quarterback. But at some point, we need to start talking about how he makes those guys around him better, and he's producing from a quarterback position. because you know, I've heard you say it several times on this show today, you've got to have an elite guy under center when you want to get it done deep in the season and the playoffs. Oh, I was going to ask you about this. Derek Carr was barking at everybody last night. Olave, the coaches, and I'm like, bro, give me a break.
Starting point is 00:17:53 Like, how does that play? When I, the Olave thing, after about the third bark, I'm like, dude, chill out. I mean, I didn't, and I have defended Pays and. Manning and Brady. Aaron can get snippy. I'll defend that. I thought Carr was totally out of line last night. Am I, what did you see? I did too. I didn't like it, especially the one to Olave when he's yelling for him to continue on the route, which Olave has to do. But it's a double pump. It's one of those plays where you're going to pump the corner. If he bites, great. If he doesn't, you got to come off that guy and you throw it out of bounds.
Starting point is 00:18:37 How are you yelling at me when if I did continue on the route and I know how this works, Colin, I'm going to give you and Jason, this is how it works. Their car is going to come to the sideline and they're going to say, what happened? Well, I saw that he didn't continue running the route so I just threw it away. He did not throw that ball away. He was actually trying to make a pass down the field and it was out of bounds anyway. And so you have to look at yourself in the mirror and say, I haven't been doing my part. When this team acquired Derek Carr, everyone down there in New Orleans believed he was the missing piece.
Starting point is 00:19:08 He was the reason why we were going to now become a Super Bowl-conjury team because we knew what we had on defense and all we needed was a guy under center that can be consistent and be above average. That's Derek Carr. And he hasn't been that. Yes, he can put up stats after the fact. Anybody can do that. But I didn't like what I saw out of Derek Carr last night. Greg makes a good point.
Starting point is 00:19:29 They had Camara, Alave, Thomas. pass rusher, Lattimore. Like, those are elite players. Their pass blocking is eh. Their run blocking is pretty good in the OLA. But the feeling was, five, six months ago, oh, they're going to win the division. This is going to be a really good team. And it's like, they're bad in the red zone.
Starting point is 00:19:50 They don't throw the ball down the field. Michael Thomas had one great catch, but he and Olave just disappear for long stretches. They're totally dependent on Alvin Kamara catching the ball out of the backfield. So it's not, you know, it's Greg Jennings, by the way, he'll be on first things first after our show. It's great seeing you as always. I appreciate it. You bet. I was thinking about this, Jay Mack, last night.
Starting point is 00:20:12 I was thinking to you about this as you were in your rec league game dropping a threeski from the outside. So you know how a lot of times you have a job and maybe there's another job out there. It pays a little more. It's higher profile. But a lot of people, they don't want to get exposed. It's like, I don't want to get called out if I fail. A lot of people, I think, get content. And there is risk in taking the bag, high profile job, startup company.
Starting point is 00:20:40 You're the head of it. So a lot of people stay in comfortable jobs. They got their 401. There's nothing wrong with either. But Derek Carr in Vegas and Oakland was a sympathetic figure. Crazy ownership. Have to move to a different city. Can't trust.
Starting point is 00:20:57 Crazy Raiders. thank, and I'm guilty. Thank God, Derek Carr is the life preserver of this sinking vessel. So he takes the bag and goes to a way better team in a weaker division and weaker conference. And he's getting exposed. He's the issue. I mean, let's be honest with the Raiders. I said this a dozen times.
Starting point is 00:21:20 This organization's a mess. He's the savior. But what did Devante Adams complain about last year about Derek Carr? Throw the ball down the field. You've watched them this year. Think dunk. It's dump off Derek. Kamarro's getting like 12 catches.
Starting point is 00:21:37 It's insane. And they've got a lobby. And Michael Thomas isn't a big separator. O'Lavi is. But it's funny. I always fought, I always defended Derek. He was a sympathetic figure for a tire fire of an organization.
Starting point is 00:21:51 So he gets the bag. He goes to a team. They're well-run, well-owned, well-owned, great GM, excellent defense, elite corner, elite pass rusher, starback, he's the issue. I don't think I'm being harsh. Watch last night. He had one great drive. How much of that is A, the offensive coordinator saying, hey, this is what I know, this
Starting point is 00:22:12 worked before, this has worked for the last 15 years with Drew Brees in the organization, and B, I know you love this, a defensive head coach saying, we got a great defense. Let's not make mistakes. Let's not throw the ball down the field. We just saw McCarthy dump Kellen Moore because he's overly aggressive. Let's dial it back, safe offense. And is Dennis Allen part of the reason that Derek Carr? Justin Herbert, three coordinators four years, has put up huge numbers with all of them.
Starting point is 00:22:39 Stop blaming coordinators. Now, I think most coordinators are in the same pool. I think there's an elite 5 to 10 percent. Sala was, Demico Ryan's, Shanahan. Most coordinators, they're just, they're guys. There's 10% of great. Shane Steichen? I think he was great.
Starting point is 00:22:58 There's great guys out there. But when you start blaming, well, the guard play. Well, the left tackle. And the Saints left tackle can't pass block. I'm just saying most everybody in this country, there's 5% of the elite blank. Whatever it is. Lawyers, surgeons, and then it's mostly everybody's sort of close. At some point, you can't keep blame on the Raiders, the Saints, offensive court.
Starting point is 00:23:24 Justin Herbert. Chaos, second head coach, third coordinator, horrible low line, all that stuff. Keeps putting up huge numbers. So is there something to two guys who left their old place, took a bag, and it's not working out? Russell Wilson last year in Denver and this year in Denver, and then Derek Carr in New Orleans, just not working out.
Starting point is 00:23:47 Well, it's something to think about. Even in our business, if you want to take the big bag, here comes the scrutiny. Be very careful. You know, there's nothing wrong with being content. There's nothing wrong with being comfortable. You can take the bag in our business, in the NFL, in any business. But now people are going to really watch.
Starting point is 00:24:10 Now people are going to really inspect your quarterback rating, your TV rating, your radio rating, your passer rating. Because now you got the bag. Garapolo, you know, back up in New England. Good looking Jimmy. Oh, now he's a franchise guy. Now he can't make a throw against Mahom in the fourth quarter. Get the bum out of here.
Starting point is 00:24:28 Jared Goff, we pay him the bag. Oh, that was an awful Super Bowl. He can't beat the Niners. And he was terrible against the Patriots in the Super Bowl. Get him out of here. By the way, Dak, we all loved him. He got paid. We don't feel the same way.
Starting point is 00:24:42 Kirk Cousins was a plucky story. He got paid. Now we view him differently. Also, I saw this online. Did you see that the Saints are one of the bottom five teams in Pre-Snap snap motion. Okay?
Starting point is 00:24:54 Do you think Derek Carr is watching what Ben Johnson is cooking up for Jared Goff and saying, man, look at that. Yeah, but you know what? You know what? You know what, though? Jared Goff makes the throws. Okay. That's fair.
Starting point is 00:25:05 I mean, making the throws, but the way some of these offensive coordinators are scheming stuff up, I know this is not going to be popular, but you put Derek Carr in that Miami Dolphins offense. Oh, give me a break. And we're having a totally different. I'm not saying he is. I'm saying he would look way better than he does in this garbage piece shooter offense they got in New Orleans.
Starting point is 00:25:22 There's a water gun They're not doing anything All right Brock Heward and your picks next hour We got a lot of stuff going on Wait a minute You don't think Derek Carr would be thriving in Miami with Mike McDaniel
Starting point is 00:25:34 He would be better than he is thriving Who is a good quarterback? Can't get much worse Two is not my favorite He's not a top 10 He's thriving But he's somewhere
Starting point is 00:25:44 10 11, 12, 13-ish Derek's not I watched Derek against C.J. Stroud two weeks ago I watched it C.J. Stroud was better. More action. accurate, more confident, in the red zone better.
Starting point is 00:25:58 I watched the game. Someone from the Mike McDaniel tree, well, I guess it's technically Shanahan Tree, the guy from San Francisco calling the plays for Houston. Okay? Pete Carmichael calling the plays for New Orleans. I know you don't like to believe this. I think there's something there. By the way, Zach Wilson is playing pretty good.
Starting point is 00:26:14 I thought Nathaniel Hackett stunk. Playing good? He's pretty good for him. He's just not screwing up. You've got to ask Brock Heward when he comes on. What would Derek Carr be in Miami? Like, how good would Mike? Daniel make a lot of these better.
Starting point is 00:26:27 But you're invalidating any of Tua's success. I'm not invalidating it. Like, he's been very good. Tua or Derek Carr right now. One guy went to Alabama. One went to Fresno State. Tua has been better this season. Tua was a better high school or a better college player.
Starting point is 00:26:42 It's been a better. Yes. Where hasn't Tua been better? Two is better. Everywhere. High school college pro. I don't think it's that big of a gap, though. I think it's pretty.
Starting point is 00:26:52 Okay. Now you're going to send the Miami Dolphist. Tua. Doa does something. that it, it, it, they didn't do it in the 40s, but Tua has really evolved. He throws it down field. That's my knock on Derek. That's the knock DeBonte Adams had. Dude, don't be dump off Derek. You got the bag. Throw the ball down the field. Derek, hit me up. Let me know about I'm not anti Derek. I've defended him forever. I'm not anti Derek. I'm just saying after a while,
Starting point is 00:27:17 listen, I'm not, I, I couldn't resign Tua because of the concussion stuff really worries me. If it was an ankle thing or a knee thing, I'd sign him. Because he's very good. good. This offense elevates him obviously, but Tua does some things very well. Seize the field, bright kid, great leader, really accurate. We can't deny that. I'd like him to be bigger. I don't like the concussions. He has an injury history. Not a great athlete, good athlete. But I mean, Derek right now, it is, you got Olave, Michael Thomas, you got Camaro's a beast. You can't be Dinkin and Duncan. Are I coming off harsh here? Am I bad guy? is Derek. I'm not here on Derek Parr Island. I'm watching on television. This is what I see. I got to do
Starting point is 00:28:00 commercials here. This show is sold out. I don't even have time for one. Back in a second. All right. I got a parlay for you this weekend. Thanks to Draft King Sportsbook. New users use the code heard when you download the app. Now for my parlay pick of the week via Draft King Sportsbook. I'll take Bills minus nine. They played terribly against the New York Giants at New England. Swallow the points. Bills have a better roster, more to play for, as Miami and the Jets now are charging fast. Chargers at the Chiefs all take the Chargers plus five and a half. Why? Chiefs are not a big favorite. Still struggling offensively. Connectability between Mahomes and that young receiving group. And I'll take the Eagles minus two hosting the dolphins. When you
Starting point is 00:28:52 punch back at Miami, they can fold, not a physical team. I think they'll struggle to slow down the Eagles offense. I like the bills minus nine, chargers plus five and a half, Eagles minus two. You want to take the herd parlay. Check out Draft King Sportsbook. Starting point is 00:29:30 It's the enhanced games. Some call it grotesque. Others say it's unleashing human potential. Either way, the podcast's Superhuman documented it all, embedded in the games and with the athletes for a full year. Within probably 10 days, I'd put on 10 pounds. I was having trouble stopping the muscle growth. Listen to Superhuman on the I-Hard radio app.

Starting point is 00:31:05 with a brand new week of fun, thought-provoking Star Wars-related episodes. Join us as we tackle science and culture topics from a galaxy far, far away, such as the biology of Tontons and Wampas on the Ice Planet Hot,
Starting point is 00:31:18 or the practicality and corporate business sense of the Sith, rule of two. Listen to stuff to blow your mind on the IHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Once your business gets to a certain size, crack start to emerge, you deserve a customized solution. That's NetSuite. They have a KPI checklist. Absolutely free. NetSuite.com slash her. J-Mac with a news. No, no, no, no, turn on the news. This is the Herdline News.
Starting point is 00:31:48 All right, do we all settle down after the Pete Carmichael Slander? I don't even know where that came from. It's a fine gentleman. Reality. All right, let's start with Trevor Lawrence. Hey, how about Trevor Lawrence? Wasn't even supposed to really play all week questions about his knee? Look at this.
Starting point is 00:32:04 Look at how mobile he is. You know, some of his runs last night reminded me. Remember that run he had against Ohio State in the playoffs? That's what I thought. I think a 67-yard touchdown run. Yep, I remember that. I mean, I like Trevor Lawrence a lot. And Colin, listen to this quote about his career night in the ground.
Starting point is 00:32:23 Golly, it's crazy how you have something like that going on. You don't plan on moving a lot and you end up running the ball more than I usually do. It wasn't the plan, but instincts kind of take over. And I'm glad that it was able to hold up and I was able to feel good enough to make those plays. Gali, I like people who say golly. Not many people I know say it, but if you like it, Also, he was wearing a backwards hat there. Care to chime in?
Starting point is 00:32:49 As you well know, I do not like that. That's like a thing of yours. Well, it's mostly a thing on the Wednesday weekly press conference, the one big one where they put a bank sponsor behind you. Do not like it. I do wear my hat backwards when I'm cleaning the garage. Really? I've seen Brady on occasion to screwing around. It's not my favorite thing, but it's with him.
Starting point is 00:33:11 He actually has long hair, and he always needs to keep it back. so he that's occasionally he just get that he looks like you know some matinee idle guy so fabio so he's got to get it out of the care america must know what else are you wearing when you clean the garage something that i know you've never done but what else you would i clean the tank tops cut off sleeves or what do we do it don't do tank tops uh but i will say that i what do what do you mean i don't clean the garage come on who clean you don't clean the garage Yes, I do. I also wash my own dishes. That's totally different.
Starting point is 00:33:45 You got to wash dishes every day. You do not clean the garage. Clean the toilets, wash my car. Well, I don't do that. LA's got a lot of good car washes. I don't do my own car anymore. I usually do my own car, but there's like one on every corner. Okay.
Starting point is 00:34:00 Let's see what's going on here. Oh, man. Next up, Derwin, James. This guy ticks me off, man. Two really costly penalties in that Chargers Cowboys game. He's been now flagged four times for personal fouls, and he's only played four games. I know. Colin, this is like a thing, and Brandon Staley talked about how Derwin James needs to clean it up.
Starting point is 00:34:21 He needs to change his approach because he needs to stop getting penalized. So he needs to lower his target and, you know, play the aggressive game that he plays. But he's got a lower strikes zone and make sure that he's making good decisions. It is the way it is, and you've got to make adjustments when you've had things go. the other way. And he will. He's too smart of a player. And he's such a leader on our team.
Starting point is 00:34:47 Just had to look up the contract. He's 27. He's 27 has an out after next season. Yeah, I think he's their best athlete, and I think they like him a lot, but he's gotten expensive injury prone, and these mistakes, this is his last...
Starting point is 00:35:01 I think they'd like to move him eventually, but they don't love their corners, so he does provide leadership. And he's just... He's too reckless. A little Jamal Adams. That's a perfect word. He's better than Jamal Adams because he can guard people in coverage.
Starting point is 00:35:14 Jamal Adams cannot. Now, this weekend, Derwin James historically has done great against Travis Kelsey. Yeah. Like that's one of the big edges that the Chargers will have against the Chiefs because there aren't many others. That game is so fascinating. You taking the Chargers Chiefs is. Well, first of all, I really like, you know, kind of my rule is when it comes to an inner division rivalry, a division rival. A division rival.
Starting point is 00:35:38 if an underdog's getting more than a field goal and has a good quarterback, it's almost a default position. Like if you give me DAC and five points against Philly, regardless of where they play, Dallas would be the side because DAC's a capable quarterback. If you give me a bad quarterback, but I mean like Tua against Buffalo the next time they face, if Miami is getting four and a half to five, regardless of the fact Miami can't stop Josh Allen at all, I would take Tua. If you give me a good quarterback,
Starting point is 00:36:08 In a division rivalry game and over a field goal, it's hard not to take. I mean, every time Pittsburgh and Baltimore plays, it feels like it's a two-point game. We got a guy on staff who is looking this stuff up and he said, everybody likes the Chargers this weekend. Everybody. But the line is not moving. What does that tell you? That means just a bunch of guys like me, squares. The sharps, when they go in, the line moves, I'm just a nobody.
Starting point is 00:36:33 So squares like me, sharps are squares. I'm a square. So it's a bunch of Joe's betting, me, and the sharp money's probably waiting for the number. But let me just tell you. Let's say Durwin James removes Kelsey, and Kelsey, Taylor Swift's not there,
Starting point is 00:36:49 and Kelsey struggles, three catches, 27 yards. Where does the KC offense come from? Who's their guy after? That's why I'm... Yeah. I mean, by the way, Derwin James matches up with tight ends. You know, he's very good defending Kelsey. The numbers bear that out.
Starting point is 00:37:02 Yeah, so my takeaway is, well, they're not scoring. And so you have one of the better safeties in coverage in Derwin James. You have a quarterback in Herbert that has played brilliantly, not well, brilliantly against this team. Holmer away. This Kansas City offense will get better. It's not there yet.
Starting point is 00:37:19 Yeah. These divisional matchups have killed me this season. Final story, NBA. James Hardin. Colin, your guy. Big James. Absent from Sixers practice all week and reportedly will miss tonight's preseason finale,
Starting point is 00:37:34 according to Shams. I've never watched even a half of an NBA preseason. You didn't watch any Lakers' sons last night? No, did you? No, I saw the highlight. I don't watch preseason games. I was playing my own basketball game. By the way, I did not play well last night.
Starting point is 00:37:49 Well, that's one of the reasons you come off. You come off the bench. But just, I started last night. Was there an injury to somebody else? That's so disrespectful. By the way, I saw Mosgov before the game. I said, we're playing you next week. He's like, I'll be here.
Starting point is 00:38:02 So if you want to pull up next Thursday. Oh, yeah. I got it in my calendar. Yeah, I got it right after dinner with my beautiful wife. Go watch J-MAC curl up ill-advised threes at the workout club. Okay, all right. I know the audience loves me talking about the men's league. I love it. Research shows they want more of it.
Starting point is 00:38:23 All right, anyways, James Harden not playing. He's disgruntled with the lack of traction on a trade with the paper clips. What do you think the Sixers should do? wait for the best deal and risk this becoming a bigger distraction. Remember, Joel Embed. I've speculated Embedde will ask out this season. I like Philadelphia's roster. What I don't like is their chemistry.
Starting point is 00:38:45 Just get them out of the room and give me two bench players and a pick. You let the roster, but not the chemistry? Those things are integral to work together. No, no, no, no. That's what I'm saying. If you get rid of Hardin, I like the chemistry. So just get him out of town. Get them out of town.
Starting point is 00:38:58 Get them out of town. I've got a star in Embed. I've got an emerging young player I love in Maxie. I've got a very good three in Tobias Harris. Like the coach. Okay, here's what I don't like, the chemistry. So get the chemistry out of town and give me two really solid bench guys. That's the problem.
Starting point is 00:39:13 Mori has steadfastly said, I'm not doing a deal that doesn't help me. But all anybody's going to ask is Sixers at every game. Joel, what's going on with Hardin? What's going on? That's going to eat away and beat. If I was the Clippers, I would not give them Terrence Man. And that's who Darrell wants. I like Terrence Man.
Starting point is 00:39:30 I would not give them Terrence Man. I get a headache and you get one of my little guy with dexterity. Just because James Hardin wants to get his way. Forget it. I'm not doing it. So I think at some point, I say this all that I was talking, who was I talking to the other day about this? Oh, Mark Slareth. Whenever you have a family problem, take the loss, get it out. Stress is poison.
Starting point is 00:39:52 Just get it off the table. Who cares? You win some, you lose some. Get hardened out of town, move on. Get bench players in a pick. The problem with doing that, and I agree. usually works. Or whatever.
Starting point is 00:40:03 You don't get a great deal. And now Joelle Embedde and Maxie are forced to carry the load. It doesn't go well. And Embeddead says, I'm out, guys. Excuse me. I'm done. Excuse me. James Hardin led the league and assists, what, two years ago last year?
Starting point is 00:40:14 Tobias Harris. Oh, 18 a game. Oh, who-hoo-hoo. Come on. That's a good three. You know how many guys average 18 a game in the NBA right now? Not that many all-star games for Tobias Harris.
Starting point is 00:40:24 How many all-N-B.? How many all defense? Well, he doesn't. He isn't allowed to take a shot late between Hardin and Embed. Okay. All right. ride that Tobias train all the way to the finals, buddy. Jay Mack with the news.
Starting point is 00:40:38 Well, that's the news. And thanks for stopping by. The herd line news. I think I pulled the muscle yelling about Derek Carr. Still October, but the holiday is coming fast before life goes into overdrive, which it does in the fall. You're at your kids' practices. Protect your home with simply safe home security.

Starting point is 00:43:17 Joe and I are both lifelong Star Wars fan, so we're celebrating May the 4th with a brand new week of fun, thought-provoking Star Wars-related episodes. Join us as we tackle science and culture topics from a galaxy far far away, such as the biology of taun tons and wampas on the ice planet hot, or the practicality and corporate business sense of the Sith rule of two. Listen to stuff to blow your mind on the iHeart radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Start Saturday Strong with Big Noon Saturday on Fox. It all starts with Big Noon kickoff tomorrow at 10 a.m. live from Columbus.
Starting point is 00:43:53 Then at noon, the most anticipated game of the season as third-ranked Penn State takes on seventh-th-ranked Ohio State takes on seventh-ranked Penn State. So interesting, there is a report here from a Colt beat rider at A to Z sports. Not familiar with it, but I'm just reading here the story that the Colts are in talks with Denver for wide receiver Jerry Judy. I would move off Judy. I think this is a good move. I think they have to get draft capital. Because if you're going to keep Russell Wilson accumulate picks, do what the Rams did this year, get a bunch of picks, hit on five or six, and get some players who are productive, but don't cost much for a few years. So what's happening in Denver is almost unprecedented. Where according to Mark Slareth yesterday, and he's pretty tied in, Russell's contract kicks in
Starting point is 00:44:52 next year. And there's a feeling they'd move off it at the end of this year before they got into the contract. Here's Mark Slareth. I would be shocked if Russell Wilson makes it pass this year. If he's the quarterback of the Denver Broncos next year, I would be shocked. And it's not that Russell Wilson is playing terrible football, but he's not playing winning football and he's not elevating the players around him. And so from that standpoint, I think it's time to clean house. and it's time to, you know, get new players. So this is not unprecedented. The L.A. Rams did this.
Starting point is 00:45:31 They signed golf, agreed to a deal in 2019. The contract was going to start in 2021. And they traded him right before the contract started to Detroit. So the Rams were paying golf a fortune and Matt Stafford a fortune. And they gave up picks. And they won the Super Bowl. how like Denver, very good offensive coach with a handful of very nice players and they got Matt Stafford. And so that is why how do you get out of this mess?
Starting point is 00:46:07 Drake May, Caleb Williams solves it. Remember when Joe Flacco gets to a Super Bowl, signs a massive contract and then starts deteriorating? And then he's at the end of his big contract and it's like, you're not very good, he's expensive. Lamar Jackson solved all the problems. That's all it takes. I don't know where the road leads if you draft Drake May or Caleb Williams. But I do know Sean Peyton and Russell Wilson feel like a dead end. And so it may sound harsh or crazy, but think of how we view Jared Gough now in this league.
Starting point is 00:46:48 When he was with the Rams, it was like, dud in the Super Bowl, can't beat the Niners, very limited, not athletic and highly expensive. Look at him now in Detroit. He's held in very high regard. I think Russell Wilson's got a spot. This is not it. All teams make painful mistakes.
Starting point is 00:47:11 The Rams probably would now admit they signed golf, got a little emotional early. Got rid of him. Before the big money came in, had to be for him and Stafford on a Super Bowl, first year. And even now in their big rebuilding year, they're actually kind of good, still have Stafford. So I think it's just stuff you have to consider. There is what you have to do in this league in almost every business. Make a mistake, own it.
Starting point is 00:47:40 Just don't double down on it. It's what Jay Mack and I talked about with Daniel Jones. He was a reach. Okay. Signed Saquan to a longer deal, two or three years. Roll with your star who's respected in the locker room and franchise tag Daniel Jones. You could have done that. The players knew who could play, Sequin Barclay.
Starting point is 00:48:00 The players had doubt about Daniel Jones. Instead, they tick off Saquan and go doubling down on a mistake with Daniel Jones. Now they're trapped. Just own your stuff. Everybody makes mistakes. I think social media freaks everybody out. Nobody wants to get called out. There are no perfect broadcasters, coaches, GMs.
Starting point is 00:48:19 Only perfect people in the world are anonymous trolls. They're all perfect. The rest of us have bad days, bad segments, GMs that I know and talk to. I have a really, really good friend in this league who is a wonderful guy based on the East Coast and he still regrets a draft pick from about five years ago. Sleepless nights. It happens. And he's brilliant.
Starting point is 00:48:46 Free agent pick. You got to take swings. You got the camp room. Super Bowl, pressure, owner. It's okay. There's no perfect GMs. There's no perfect quarterbacks. There's no.
Starting point is 00:48:55 Mahomes this year struggling. Career lows and everything happens. It's okay. But what you can't do is double down on it or accept it. I mean, I showed my Super Bowl bubble earlier. It's all elite quarterbacks. Nothing against Russell. Russell's not necessarily the problem in Denver, but he's not the solution.
Starting point is 00:49:19 That's what I'm looking for. I'm Sean Payton. I need solutions. Drake May, Caleb Williams, those feel like solutions. Start trading off pieces. Be a bad year. Could be a very good future very, very soon. Hour three and a Friday next.
Starting point is 00:49:37 Another podcast from some SNL late night comedy guy, not quite. Unhumor me with Robert Smigel and friends.
