This is an I-Heart podcast.
Guaranteed Human.
Another podcast from some SNL, late-night comedy guy,
not quite on Humor Me with Robert Smygel and Friends.
Me and hilarious guests from Bob Odenkirk to David Letterman
help make you funnier.
This week, my guest, SNL's Mikey Day and head writer Streeter Seidel
help an a cappella band with their between songs banter.
Where does your group perform?
We do some retirement homes.
Those people are starving for banter.
Listen to humor me with Robert Smigel

Imagine an Olympics where doping is not only legal, but encouraged.
It's the enhanced games.
Some call it grotesque.
Others say it's unleashing human potential.
Either way, the podcast's Superhuman documented it all, embedded in the games and with the athletes
for a full year.
Within probably 10 days, I'd put on 10 pounds.
I was having trouble stopping the muscle growth.

Here we go.
Hour number two on a Wednesday.
Live in Los Angeles,
wherever you may be and however you may be listening.
Always appreciate you choosing us.
All right.
So I saw this, Jay Mack.
We were just talking about this.
So Sunday is a work day for us.
We work all day for it.
It's a tough work day, too.
Well, I mean, it is a work day.
So it's like, and then Saturday, usually you get it one night, you know, with a fam.
But Saturday nights, Bama, Texas, what am I supposed to do with that?
You know, it's funny.
Quinn Ewers was the quarterback everybody talked about after Drake, May, and Caleb Williams.
And I watched this weekend, he was not my top ten.
Well, they didn't show anything.
Sark is not putting anything on tape for Sabin.
This is a kitchen sink game for Texas.
You've got to win this game.
You have to win this if you're Sarke.
Even in enemy territory, I wouldn't be shocked if they pulled it off.
I'm not that impressed by Alabama.
I know it's only one game.
Just the roster overall doesn't blow me away.
All right.
Nick Saban doing a lot of smiling in the off season.
Who's got the better quarterback in this game?
Well, let's watch the game.
Quinn Ewers has not been good in big spots.
He's been good against bad teams.
Wasn't he great against Bama last year until the injury?
Again, finish the games.
I can't.
You're a tough critic, man.
Well, I mean, it's just like saying the first four miles of the marathon, I was really running well.
Got to finish the thing.
But it's not a huge standard by me.
Like, I've got to finish the game.
So Travis Kelsey may not play Thursday.
Chris Jones is holding out.
Don't forget Brady Belichick 10 years without winning a Super Bowl.
And that's the greatest dynasty ever.
Kansas City is realizing how hard it is to win back-to-back Super Bowl.
Stars age.
They get hurt.
They forget about winning as a priority.
they hold out.
They want to be rewarded for their success.
And that's just in their own building.
Not to mention that Justin Herbert in Division,
who they play twice now has a legitimate big-time,
progressive offensive coordinator.
The AFC all around has got great young quarterbacks.
Calvin Ridley is now giving a superstar potential perimeter player to Trevor Lawrence.
Joe Burroughs got a great left tackle finally.
So you're seeing why you don't win.
back-to-back championships in this league for the last 20 or so years.
It's a hard cap, aging roster of stars, the disease of more influx of other great young
quarterbacks.
And you see this all the time in business and politics and sports.
It's never just one thing.
It's a collection of things.
When you look at that Kansas City schedule, which is rated as the fifth toughest
in the league, there are almost no breaks.
Now, they get Chicago at home and Denver at home early,
But again, they face Detroit, okay, in Kansas City,
but now without Chris Jones and maybe Travis Kelsey.
At Jacksonville, and that weather, good luck.
Then a couple of weeks later, at Aaron Rogers, and at Minnesota,
maybe the loudest venue in the league.
Then it's Justin Herbert, at Denver, Miami, Philadelphia.
There's also trips to Green Bay, New England.
They get Cincinnati.
They get Joe Burrow.
They get Josh Allen.
There's not a lot of easy Ws.
And here's what's interesting to me.
What the Chiefs ask of Mahomes relative to what other young quarterbacks get.
Think about this.
Burrow just got a great left tackle.
Josh Allen just got the best tied in in college football.
Trevor Lawrence got Calvin Ridley.
Justin Herbert draft another receiver in the first round.
Now he's got two first round receivers.
I don't know where Keenan Allen was draft, but Mike Williams,
a first rounder, Quentin Johnson, TCU, a first rounder.
Lamar Jackson just got OBJ and a first round receiver.
And Mahalms, Tyreek Hill, see ya.
Offensive coordinator, see ya.
Orlando Brown left tackle.
See ya.
Judeo Smith-Huster.
See ya.
The amount they put on Mahomes is really remarkable.
It's like all the other AFC quarterbacks got a little gift, little left
tackle, little star receiver, a little free agent, great college tight end. Mahomes, see ya,
can't afford it. Nope, got to move. And now Travis Kelsey hurt, Chris Jones not around. We just
keep asking more of Patrick Mahomes. And this is why it's hard in a hard cap league to win
back-to-back championships. It's also hard to knock Joel Klatz, Colorado, Buffalo offensive
records out of the books. But Shadur Sanders may do it. Joel
Clat on a Wednesday. Let's bring him on. Oh, he's got a bounce. He has got a bounce. I have not seen in a long time. You know, I listen to the show, and I'm quite aware that you couldn't keep my name out of your mouth yesterday. I heard it. Check this out. We all heard it. What? What did I say? His son's going to shatter all of Joel Clatt's records. I know. It's just a shame. I mean, Joel Clatt's name just going to be taken off the Colorado quarterback record book. It's going to be. I think. It's going to be. I think. It's going to be.
We all shoot her seniors.
Clat held the record for nine completions in a game.
So I think Shador's already broken that.
Shadoor's broken it.
I think it was an intemoral program when Clat played there.
Wow.
Okay.
Wow.
The shots.
We kid because we care.
Oh my goodness.
Okay, so let's just say this.
You get excited for Colorado games.
Sure.
Here's my thing.
Weren't you a little surprise with 70% transfer roster at the efficiency?
Yeah, that was the most.
So what was I not surprised about?
What was I surprised about?
I was not surprised at the level of talent.
I knew that that was there.
On the outside in particular,
I knew Travis was going to be a great player.
And those wide receivers,
I had watched a lot of tape on them,
watched a lot of tape of Shadour.
I wasn't surprised with the level of talent.
I was shocked at two things.
The offensive line held up for the most part in protection.
That's number one.
And number two,
the level of efficiency
in operation was wild.
Like that doesn't, that shouldn't happen.
And remember, this is 68 new scholarship players.
This is a brand new offensive coordinator.
Normally, if you just have a new coordinator and a new quarterback, it's like, oh, it's bumpy,
and we're going to take a delay a game.
Nothing like that whatsoever.
And the ball was going to the correct spot all the time.
I made the point early in the game.
And I believe this, because, like, their offensive line is not great.
Okay.
now they played well, but they're not a great offensive line.
You still have to game plan around your offensive line, minimize their impact on the game.
And Colin, Sean Lewis, the offensive coordinator, did a great job of that,
but that only works if the game can be run through the mind of the quarterback.
So that means that like every play, he's making a choice.
He's playing the ratios.
He's playing the leverage.
Where is the ball going at what timing?
And Shador did that so well.
And that's part of the reason.
It wasn't just his ability to throw the ball
and get it there on time and on target,
which was also very good.
It was his ability to manage the game through his mind
that really impressed a lot of the NFL people
that I talked to over the last couple of days.
Now, Dad's the coach.
I strongly believe, I mean, I know this sport.
Okay, take the LSU's going to win the Natty thing out.
I'm usually right on the button.
I was coming with.
with that one. Okay, okay, okay. They're going to go
in a nine-game winning streak, so let's slow down.
The point being is
Schedur Sanders
is absolutely, in my opinion,
when I watched, and two people I
text, a top ten pick,
but does he leave, does he leave
dad?
That's a good question. He's never played for anybody else.
His whole life.
Think about that. Wow.
Like,
Prime has been his coach since he was in
youth football, then coached him at Trinity
Christian, then coached him at Jackson, now coached him at Colorado. He's never had to play for
anybody else. And I don't know this to be sure, but I could see him, and he would get Travis as well.
Like Travis Hunter has to be here next year. Yeah. Yeah. I don't know. I could see,
now we'll see how it all goes. If you're going to be a top five pick, that's a lot.
obviously he doesn't come from
low means so it's not like he's dying for that
but that's a huge payday nonetheless
you could also get it's a good question
listen it's a good question but if he did
to your original point let's just say it like this
if shadour continues to play at this level
he's absolutely in the conversation in the top 10 of the NFL
track I know question I could not believe his accuracy
yeah it was very good lot I mean leaning moving it was like home
the fourth down which you just saw if you're
you're watching. The fourth down, games on the line. It is fourth and three, and he gets a blitz
in his face, and he backpedals and basically throws a fade away that if it's behind the wide
receiver or running back in this case by a yard, it stopped because the linebacker's going to
catch up and tackle him, and he fades away and throws it perfectly on the outside. Do you think
other coaches watch Deion and think that blunt style? I'm just going to, I'm just going to bail on players
because it was a little harsh. Do you, or is it, or is that one?
of those, well, it works for Prime. It wouldn't work for us. That's a good question. I will say that
I think that it, I think that the narrative isn't correct that he essentially ran off everybody.
If you actually know what happened, there was only about, and I know this seems like a large number,
but there was only about 19 to 20 guys that they sat with and said, hey, listen, it's not going to
work out here. Can we help you get to another program? Okay. Everybody else quit. It was too much for
them. And why was it too much for them? Because his standard is really high. This is what I think also
people don't understand about Coach Prime is that he's more like Nick Sabin than he is different
from Nick Saban. And I know that sounds crazy. It doesn't. But it's true. And it's in this respect,
the reckoning that is every day in each of their programs is really high.
Every player, the standard that they set and expect from their coaches, their staff,
their players is really high.
It's what makes it hard to play and coach for Nick Saban.
We all know that because then he presents that exact same exterior when he's speaking with the media.
You don't expect that from coach.
Prime. But a great example is that his defensive coordinator is Charles Kelly just came from coaching
at Alabama for four years in Florida State before that. I asked him, I said, like, if you tell
me, how alike are they? How different are they? And he said, they're 98% alike and two percent
different. It just so happens that you see and hear all the two percent and you don't see the 98
behind the scenes. So one of the reasons why they had so. One of the reasons why they had
such great turnover, an immense turnover, is that his standard is just way higher than people
actually realize from the outside. So Texas Bama, so I saw some. That's a good one.
It is a good one. So I'm not a big Quinn Ewers fan. Okay. Okay. I watched, I don't think he
would be a top five quarterback in the Pack 12. I'll get to that. Oh, that's a good. That's a,
oh man, that's a good debate. I like that. Not refined enough for me, a little sloppy, but I think
Sark's good at coaching quarterbacks.
I think you're right, by the way.
So, do you buy into this theory that Sark went with vanilla schemes and pulled back?
Or maybe they're just not very good because they couldn't move the ball against rice in the first half?
I think both can be true.
I think both can be true.
There's no doubt in my mind.
Sark is smart enough to know that he's not showing anything to Nick Sabin.
There's no chance he's showing anything.
to Nick Saban in that week one of what they want to do, what they have to do, what their bread and
butter is. That can be true. And at the same time, you can watch the film of that game and
think to yourself, man, I thought Texas would be better up front. Man, they didn't protect the quarterback
well. Man, yours was still over while throwing the ball 20 or more yards down the field. That's got
to improve. Last year against Bama early in the game, he was so accurate throwing it down the field.
Remember how explosive they were in that first quarter?
I mean, if he stays in that game, Bama's got some issues.
There's no doubt.
And since then, it just has not materialized with Texas or with Uers.
Uers struggled throwing it down the field.
He struggled against ranked opponents.
I believe he was one and four against ranked opponents.
And then here's the other part about the Texas aspect going into Tuscaloosa.
I don't think that we appreciate how difficult it is in college football
to beat a top five team in their own building.
It just doesn't happen.
You know last year, top five teams were 30 and one in their own building.
The only win was Michigan beating Ohio State in that last game of the year.
Since 2019, even top 15 teams have only won three times in top five buildings.
And that was LSU with Joe Burrow at Alabama.
It was Oregon at Ohio State a couple of years ago and then Michigan at Ohio State last year.
So as much as I want to say, hey, Texas is ready, their roster is ready.
I think they actually have the better quarterback in this matchup.
Alabama, I'm not sure.
They don't have Bryce Young to bail them out.
Even after saying all of that, I just don't think Texas can win there.
Yeah, it's tough.
And not with yours playing like he did last week or like he did down the stretch.
He's going to have to find a different level.
He's going to have to find the same form that he had in the game a year ago in the first quarter.
Okay, I don't want to spend a lot of time on this.
I had just rambled at one point.
I thought LSU might win the Natty.
The officiating was very curious in the second half.
Are you really going to talk about officiating?
What was it like a four score?
Anyway, I...
Here's your problem.
Ready?
Yeah, I'd like to hear it.
Like a needle in a haystack question.
What is my problem?
I mean, it's obvious, actually, is that your basis on the LSU stuff is that you really like
Brian Kelly.
You think he's an excellent coach.
Yeah, coaching matters.
Mike Norvelle just coached circles around him in the second half of that game.
It's true.
Well, Norvelle's good.
They didn't adjust.
One, the mistakes were profound, again, special teams and offensively.
That speaks to coaching, preparation.
We can't marvel at Colorado's ability to be well coached in their first game with 68 new scholarship players.
And then Brian Kelly in his second year with his quarterback back, they look like a train wreck in the first half.
and we're just going to brush it off and continue to think they're like,
well, no, Brian Kelly's elite.
Mike Norvell out-coached Brian Kelly by a long shot on Sunday night.
They ran the same run concept time after time after time in the second half.
And LSU had no answer, whether it was fatigue and or schematically.
They just were not answering the bell.
Well, maybe Florida State's really good.
They are.
I've got them number four now in my top ten.
I think that they are very good.
By the way, a lot.
But you said LSU was going to win the Natty.
You can't just all of a sudden be like, well, Florida State was good.
I mean, it's a neutral site.
You've got to play better than that.
Kansas City loses to Detroit.
Are they out of the Super Bowl?
NFL college is different.
Well, that's because one goes to class, but by and large, it's football.
Can't bail on a team after one loss?
That's not, hey, hey, a lot of people bail on Clat, not this show.
That's true.
You've never bailed.
I don't know if anyone that's bailed on me, but that's fine.
Then don't bail.
Then say it again.
Do you think LSU is going to come back and go to the playoffs?
I think they're going to win about nine games in a row.
Time out.
That's not the question I ask.
Are they going to the playoffs?
I'll ask the questions here.
Are they going to the playoff?
Maybe not, but they'll be in the hunt.
Oh, look who's backpedaling.
Hey.
Like Travis Hunter on defense.
Backpedals all day.
Okay, let's start with this.
It's kind of sad.
This is the best the Pact 12's been.
It's insane.
Maybe ever.
And they're blowing the conference.
I know.
I'm not blaming anybody.
All I'm saying is,
I will.
the leadership in that conference, whether it was some of the presidents, and you know
exactly who you are, whether it was Larry Scott.
But you know what it is.
Terrible.
And let me just say this.
As a guy that appreciated the East Coast, but my history is mostly West Coast, sometimes
the Pac-12 was a little snooty and precious.
And I think the West Coast, we can be a little, you know, we love, they do surveys on
this.
And if you ask people out West, you know, the smartest region, they always go, well, out West.
And it's like, well, we don't have the.
Ivy League. There's a lot of smart people out there.
West Coast people kind of think
highly of themselves. I myself do not,
but many do. So the point being
is they
kind of earned
the regression
of the conference. Five years ago, it was
a mess, but I will say this.
The coaching's great and the quarterback
plays insane. The quarterback play
is insane. You're exactly right.
There are five,
really six
quarterbacks. If Dion's son
comes out, he's a first rounder.
That's right. Bo Nix.
And by the way,
and Caleb. And we failed
to realize that the problem
was not DJU
O'Young-Lelele, it was Clemson.
So like Oregon State
is better this year. They've got
five bona fide top 15 teams.
I think if Colorado wins this week,
they're going to have six top 20 teams.
Crazy. And their quarterback depth
is astounding. It really
is remarkable. I've never
said, listen, I've been watching this,
conference my whole life.
I've never seen this. No, it's the best
it's ever been. This year.
2003 is the best the Pac-12 has ever been.
And Panix? Penix is the top-10
pick. Not only top-10 pick, have you seen
Washington's receivers? Very good.
They have two stars and another
third that can play. Romo Dungze is
one of the most under-known,
under-appreciated stars in
college football. First round talent. I agree.
I 100% agree. And by the way,
here's a guy that we just like never talk about.
He's injured. We'll see if he gets back this
this week. Cam Rising is the one that's just won the conference two times in a row.
Like, that's what's so astounding. Bow Nix is about to make his 48th start. Caleb Williams,
bona fide first pick in the draft. I've never seen, not just the PAC 12, I've never seen a conference
since I've been covering college football, have this quality of depth at the quarterback position
in a singular year. I've never seen it before. It's quite astounding. Joel Clat, joining us for the
radio audience.
So I watched, I flew from east to west, so I just got nothing but college football all day.
And I watched Ohio State.
The old lines am mess.
I didn't like to play calling.
I'm not sure what they have at quarterback.
I don't want to overreact because the transfer portal, college football is starting
to be college basketball.
You can't count the first month.
Especially on the O lines.
I watched Ohio State and I'm like, they're going to be fine.
I don't know if they're going to be fine.
I didn't like anything offense.
I didn't like their play calling.
I didn't like the quarterback play.
They got no push up front.
Do we have a crisis at Ohio State?
No, I'm not going to go there, only because the track record would suggest the offense will be okay.
Okay.
Like this is still the unit that falls under Ryan Day's watch.
Under his watch, we've never seen a bad offense, ever.
Yeah.
So at least you can assume that you're going to.
But you've watched the highlight.
Oh, and I've watched the game film.
The offensive line was the biggest issue, not the quarterback.
Now, the quarterback didn't play great, but the biggest issue they have is their offensive line without question.
Now, there's some youth there, right?
There's some youth.
They're having to replace some good players from a year ago.
And quite frankly, I felt like they were very vanilla.
And the way that they tried to run the ball and they were trying to puff their chests out and just say, like,
well, we're going to run these schemes.
and they were running what I would call tank plays.
Okay, what does tank play mean?
A tank play means that there's no pass attached to it.
There's no leverage pass attached to it.
So let me give you a quick example.
Let's say you're in a formation like what I know of as Trey.
Okay, so like let's say you have an H or a tight end kind of attached to the line of scrimmage.
Then you have a slot and a wide receiver all to one side.
Yeah.
Well, the defense has to declare at that point, what is the walkout defender going to do?
Is he going to defend the run or is he going to walk out?
out over the slot. Basically, are there going to be two safeties or one? What I saw is that
Indiana was running some heavy run fronts where Ohio State was not going to be able to block
everybody in the run front and they would run it anyways. A bit of hubris like, hey, we're going to
establish a mentality here. Well, it didn't work. It didn't work. They weren't attaching those
leverage throws. Let's say the walkout defender gets close to the line of scrimmage and close to the
run box. Well, everybody else can run the run. The quarterback can just stand up and throw it to the
slot receiver. We see it all the time in college football. That's called a leverage throw.
I think that that will start to enter the equation for Ohio State. I believe that they will
start to figure out the run game. And I'm not going to say it's a crisis because of the guy who's
in charge. I believe in Ryan Day. His track record suggests that we all should believe in Ryan Day.
Well, his last two years track record is he gets whacked by Michigan. That feels like a crisis.
And that was more of a defensive issue than an offensive issue. I would already
So let me just pose this question to you.
And I know you asked the question, but I'm going to pose a question again.
All right.
Would you feel better or worse than you do right now about Ohio State if they would have won
48-27?
Well, Indiana can score, so I would have felt better.
Okay, so it's basically the same margin, about 20.
I know that I would have felt more dynamic.
Why, though?
Because the one thing that we don't know about a Ryan Day team is if they can play
requisite defense at the crucial moment.
Who plays great defense anymore?
I didn't say great.
I said requisite.
I know it's a big word.
I don't know, but you said you were like from the West Coast.
Who plays defense anymore?
Georgia.
I mean, Georgia plays pretty good defense.
By the way.
But you've got to get a stop.
All I'm suggesting here is, if you're an Ohio State fan,
wouldn't you rather start to feel comfortable with the way your defense is playing,
knowing that the offense is in really good hands moving forward?
I think I would.
Now, Buckeye fans.
You know, like, you do you.
This is my issue.
And I think Urban said this was a good point, all right?
Are you complimenting your point before you give it?
This show will never be called humble.
It's the herd.
Okay.
So let me throw this out.
I said, somebody once said, when you have a great voice, you're going to sing in the car,
sing in the shower.
You're going to show it off.
God gave you a gift.
When you have their receiving talent, you're going to become a finesse program.
You have to get the ball to their receivers.
They have better receivers that 80% of the league than the chiefs.
So my takeaway is as Brian Hartline has built this conveyor belt of first-round NFL receivers,
in a weird way, it's made them a bit more of a finesse team,
and that's not their brand.
And when I watch Michigan, they want to punch your right in the forehead.
And I watch Ohio State.
They want that ball out to the flat.
And I don't blame them.
and I think it's making them a little more finesse as a program.
See, Urban thought it was a brilliant point, but go ahead.
I mean, it's a good point.
It's a good point.
And there's some truth to it.
There's no doubt.
That can be true, which doesn't help you necessarily against Michigan,
and yet,
I would argue that Ohio State is built to win a national championship.
Michigan is built to beat Ohio State.
Wow, that's interesting.
And those are two different things.
That is interesting.
We were talking about this yesterday about, I think San Francisco would beat Seattle
today if they play in the NFL.
But because San Francisco's stars are older and have an injury history, Kittal McCaffrey-Dibow,
I think the Seahawks will win the division.
But if they play today, I would take San Francisco.
But over 17 games.
So your point is, Ohio State is built to be electric.
They can play from behind.
That's right.
They can go up against Georgia.
They can go up against Georgia and it can be a one-possession game.
But they play Michigan, it's like a little uncomfortable.
Yeah, Michigan takes them into a style that they're not comfortable with because of your point.
So your point is right.
Say that again?
I couldn't hear you.
Your point is right.
Mine's better that Ohio State probably competes with, like in the playoff, you're going to get into a shootout.
You see the history of the playoffs.
Ohio State was better than Georgia the day they lost.
They were a better football team.
And Kirby even said they said that they said that.
They were lucky to win.
Now, Georgia won the game, whereas Michigan was uncomfortable and sloppy in their shootout.
Well, that's a good point.
Good point.
You wrapped it up nicely.
I thought you did a nice job today, too.
And I thought you were excellent.
There were a couple of moments where I was like, well, we almost went into the weeds, but you pulled the right back.
I thought it was very good.
Way to go.
Way to go for you.
By the way, I don't want you sulking here next week when Nebraska beats them by 10.
They might because I will tell you, Nebraska is not going to make the same mistake TCU made by throwing it 45 times.
That's right in the teeth of where Colorado can actually play at defensive back.
Nebraska is going to run it 57 times.
Don't call on Wednesday morning, Dave Coelho, I got a cold, I can't make it in today.

Do you remember when Diana Ross double-tap little Kim's boobs at the VMAs?
Or when Kanye said that George Bush didn't like black people.
I know what you're thinking.
What the hell does George Bush got to do with Little Kim?
Well, you can find out on the Look Back at it podcast.
I'm Sam Jek.
And I'm Alex English.
Each episode, we pick it here, unpack what went down, and try to make sense of how we survived it.
Including a recent episode with Mark Lamont Hill, waxing all about crack in the 80s.
To be clear, 84 is big to me not just because of crack.
I'm down to talk about crack all day, but just so y'all know.
I mean, at this point, this is the second episode where we've discussed crack.
So I'm starting to see that there's a through line.
We also have AIDS on the table right now.
Thank you for finishing that sentence.
I don't think there's a more important year for black people.
Really?
Yeah.
For me, it's one of the most important years for black people in American history.

Turn on the news.
This is the herd line news.
So Dallas is spending.
Jerry Jones is spending like a drunken sailor, just dropping money on everybody.
But, you know, who hasn't got an extension is Dak Prescott?
Jerry, though, not concerned, expects a deal with Dak to get done at some point before he hits free agency.
Those numbers on those contracts, types of numbers, especially the big ones, you live with constantly.
That's always on your mind.
There's never a time when it goes away
because you've got to make the entire thing fit.
And so it's on the mind on a player's decision
in the middle of the year.
And so it's just a fundamental.
We expect that to be with us a long time.
And, yeah, we're always working around it
with several machinations of numbers
that would work
Giants plus three and a half at home.
That's tasty.
I'm seeing some juiced threes.
Listen, divisional game in week one.
Okay?
Underdogs are dangerous.
Now, Giants historically.
And the Giants are at home.
Like, I don't like them this year, but...
I will say this.
Is it me or the Giants always feel like they start slow?
They had a great win last year, week one against Tennessee, which we called on this show.
I'm sure you saw the note, but the left guard, Tyler Smith, the young kid who played well.
Mysterious injury this week.
doesn't look like he's going to go.
Giants have a pretty good push on the defensive line.
That could be a problem.
I think the only play there is you've got to take the hook and take the Giants plus three.
Oh, that's one of my.
Oh, Blazing Five.
Well, it's in the running for one of my Blazing Five picks.
I've told you, I think the world's bailing on the Giants.
You know how some things just create their own inertia?
And it's like, the Giants are terrible and they were lucky.
Well, they also, I think, hit potentially on all three draft picks.
day bowl in year two with Daniel Jones.
It's reasonable as soon.
Like with Josh Allen, it'll only get better.
Oh, really?
Okay.
Oh, okay.
You don't think it'll get better?
How's he going to get better?
How's he going to get better?
What do you have, like 12 touchdown passes last?
15.
15?
Oh, sorry.
That's a good month.
What about 19?
What about 19?
19 touchdown passes?
Yeah, probably.
Okay, great.
Is that better?
Oh, by the way.
If they're number two pick, the center,
interior lineman from
Minnesota can play.
Then the O-line's good. Because they got two
tackles, one's great. So then their
old line's fine.
I say they got very lucky last year, and
that's accurate. I think 8 and 4
in one-score games. They're not duplicating that.
And again, maybe they won't be in one-score games.
Maybe they'll blow people out. Let me ask you, what is Daniel
Jones? Is he the guy who's a turnover machine early
in a score? Or is he the guy last year who
is ultimate game manager just don't screw it up?
Well, he's Alex Smith
with a better arm.
Smith was a number one pick, dude.
Well, this guy went sixth.
He's not, he's not Alex Smith.
Stop it, Colin.
Really?
He's a bigger Alex Smith, bigger Alex Smith with a better arm.
By the way, and Alex Smith did not work in this league until he...
Casey Alex Smith or S. San Francisco, Alex Smith.
Alex Smith was not good enough to overcome bad coaching.
But when he got good coaching, Harbaugh and Andy Reid,
Alex Smith was suddenly a playoff quarterback.
And by the way, Daniel Jones is not good enough to overcome mediocre coaching.
You give him Brian Dayball.
He's a playoff quarterback.
Some of these guys, very rarely do you get a guy where they land doesn't matter.
Alex Smith, who I love, one of the nicest guys in the world, and Daniel Jones,
when the coaching is right, can get you to the playoffs.
But I think Daniel's bigger than Alex.
Can you say that about anybody?
No.
Really?
Anybody who gets good coaching
is going to produce, right?
No.
I don't think you can say that.
So you're going Giants' playoffs, right?
I think you said that Tuesday.
I'm making my call tomorrow,
but I think people are,
there's just something cosmic about
the Jets getting all the publicity
and the Giants being
eye-rolled by the league
and it's like, it would not shock
if the teams that play in the same stadium,
the Giants in the weaker conference,
in the weaker division have the better record.
It wouldn't shock me.
But the publicity is because they added Aaron Rogers,
a Hall of Fame top 10 quarterback in the history of the sport.
And Dalvin Cook, a top five running back in the league last year.
So yeah, they're going to get publicity.
Don't try to make this a Jets Giants.
And we know the Jets have way better talent.
But yes, the Giants will have a better record
because they'll play in the joke of the NFC.
I'm going to push back on way better talent.
They have better corners.
I'll take the Giants D-line.
Oh, real?
Timeout.
Quinn and Williams, Carl Lawson.
Will McDonald, Johnson, you're taking the Giants over that group?
Vibodeau, Dexter Lawrence.
Oh, my God.
So we need a bit.
We need a wager here.
Oh, let's do it.
Let's do a wager right now.
Okay, I'll make it right now.
Let's do it on the show.
You'll go Giants playoffs.
I'll say no.
No, no.
Let's do win total.
Well, what is the Vegas win total?
No, no.
I get some points here because the Giants win totals like seven and the jet.
There's a reason for that.
And the, no, it's not set.
It might be seven and a half or eight.
We've got to look at it.
Okay, giants, time out, time out.
Okay, so nine and a half to seven and a half.
Okay, how about this?
Let's make, let's do a bet.
Let's do a steak dinner with your lovely wife and my lovely wife.
You have to give me a game and a half.
I won't make you give me two.
How about, you give me a game and a half.
Final record at the end of the year, you have to give me plus one and a half games.
Aaron Rogers must play 15 of 17 games.
He misses six games.
So the bets off.
You give me one and a half games.
Aaron does have a minimum he plays.
Let's do it right now.
Deal, fine.
Oh, my God.
I'll take it medium rare with horseradish and some broccoli.
No shot.
Moving on, Pittsburgh Steelers, who we love this week.
The off-season hype train is out of control.
Kenny Pickett.
Yeah, he's our new fan.
I love this guy.
Kenny Pickett is getting it done.
We like a lot about the Steelers.
Mike Tomlin is not buying in, though, to that outside narrative.
about the off-season buzz on his team?
They know better than to feed me anything
because I do not care.
I just respect the process,
the professional component of what we do.
And I ask my guys to remain single focus
and ignore outside noise that's really irrelevant
in terms of our growth and development
and the trajectory of what we're doing.
And so I stay away from those things
and particularly those that you mentioned that are close to me
know not to delve into that.
I like this team, man.
I'm looking at the pro football-focus ratings of the Steelers defense.
A lot of dark colors, which is good.
San Francisco is going to struggle this week.
This is a slobber knocker.
17-16, 17-16?
Well, if it's 17-16, then who are you going to bet on?
I'm thinking Steelers' Money Line plus two and a half.
Well, we got three in the summer, but that's long gone.
I think the under's in play.
No Bosa.
We'll see if Kittle doesn't play.
This is probably a pick-em.
You know what?
If this isn't in the blazing five.
Sam Darnold may have to put a cape on.
Oh, keep your eye on Sam Darnel.
All right, let's get to the final jury here.
What are we doing here?
Oh, Bears and Packers.
NFL's oldest rivalry, they've squared off 206 times since 1921.
Oh, this is going to be so good.
Aaron Rogers owns Chicago in his time with the Packers,
but now the rivalry will look different with Jordan Love under center.
Teammate Rasul Douglas isn't making it easy for him
after he gave Chicago some bulletin board material.
Wow. My thing is I just got here in 2021, so they, Packers and the Bears, were a rivalry.
But I haven't ever lost to the Bears in all my seven years with the Eagles, Panthers, and Packers.
So it's not really a rivalry for me.
I think more of a rivalry would be back in the day.
You've been on the same team for 12 years or something like that, and you've been going back and forth every year.
Maybe that's a rivalry to you.
But to me, it's like I don't really care.
Okay.
That's in the Blazing Five.
Rasul Douglas has spoken.
I think that is a game, and it may be ugly.
It's a stayaway.
Is it a stay away?
Stay away or Packers.
Wow.
I got to make a confession.
Well, it can make one.
I've flipped a little on the Packers this year.
I think they're going to be good.
You think it's going to be good.
Yeah.
I think I'm going to have them in the playoffs.
Are you going to come out tomorrow with your picks?
I'm doing it on the podcast, yeah.
I'm going to have Packers in the playoffs.
I know you don't like that.
I'll have Bears in as well.
You have the Bears in the playoffs, too.
You only get seven a conference.
I know.
The Giants aren't in, and the Vikings aren't in.
Are the Cowboys in?
By the way, Vikings on upset alert this week against Tampa.
They are?
I don't know.
We'll see.
I mean, there's a lot happening.
It's almost go time here.

IHeart radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. The NFL regular season kicks
off Sunday on Fox with a huge doubleheader. First, Christian McCaffrey and the Niners take on the
Steelers or other regional action. Then in America's Game of the Week, Jordan Love, lead the Packers
against Justin Fields and the Bears, or the Rams Battle the Seahawks.
It all kicks off Sunday on Fox.
That's one o'clock game we got at Niners' Steelers.
So I thought this soundbite was terrifying.
Jerry Jones owns the Cowboys.
His thoughts about the Cowboys acquiring Trey Lance in a trade.
The way we're structured gets a lot of criticism.
Unquestionably, it does.
But it lets us do a trade like we did the other day on land.
Because I didn't have to fool around.
I can make that trade in five minutes because I had all the information just right at my
fingertips of what we thought of his play the last couple of years.
I knew what we thought of him.
I didn't have to visit with anybody about what kind of player he is.
And so I was able to make the call relative to we didn't want to put the resources in him
and want to develop him where he fit on the whole team.
I don't have to talk to anybody about that.
I would like my owner to talk to people about personnel.
I really would.
So when Jimmy Johnson ran personnel, they had a couple of Super Bowls.
And then when Bill Parcells ran personnel, they found Tony Romo and didn't even have to draft him and had four years and three winning ones.
I'll just say since 2007, that's post-Gimmy and post-Parsells, no Super Bowls, no conference championships, and four and seven in the playoffs.
So I think there's a group as an owner that as a fan I would.
would be a little concerned with if I was in this group, Dan Snyder, Jim Mersey,
Jimmy Haslam, Jerry Jones, Michael Bidwell.
I think they tend to be meddlers.
And I just don't think it works.
I don't think, it doesn't matter what business you run.
If you're, if you're the big boss and the owner and you love the praise and avoid the
criticism, that's problematic.
In the last 15 years with Jerry having more personnel say than he's ever had, they don't
have any more playoff wins than the Jaguars, the Texans and the Jets, and we roll our eyes at those
franchises on a regular basis, maybe not the Jags anymore. So it's just, I don't know. When I hear
him say, I can make that deal. I don't have to ask anybody. I don't like that. That's the opposite
of what I want my owner to say in the NFL. I like, I always think, what kind of owner would I be?
And I think I would be passionate, but I would never, there are certain boundaries. I just wouldn't cross
and I think personnel, I don't think owners are sitting watching game film on college football on Saturdays.
I don't like that.
That would worry me as a cowboy fan.
