Starting point is 00:00:00 This is an I-Heart podcast. Guaranteed Human. Another podcast from some SNL, late-night comedy guy, not quite. Unhumor me with Robert Smygel and friends. Me and hilarious guests from Bob Odenkirk to David Letterman help make you funnier. This week, my guest, SNL's Mikey Day and head writer, Streeter Seidel, help an a cappella band with their between songs banter.
Starting point is 00:00:23 Where does your group perform? We do some retirement homes. Those people are starving for banter. Listen to humor me with Robert Smigel and friends on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Imagine an Olympics where doping is not only legal, but encouraged. It's the enhanced games. Some call it grotesque.
Starting point is 00:00:42 Others say it's unleashing human potential. Either way, the podcast's Superhuman documented it all, embedded in the games and with the athletes for a full year. Within probably 10 days, I'd put on 10 pounds. I was having trouble stopping the muscle growth. Listen to Superhuman on the IHard Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. On the Look Back at it podcast.
Starting point is 00:01:06 From 1979, that was a big moment for me. 84 was big to me. I'm Sam J. And I'm Alex English. Each episode, we pick a year, unpack what went down, and try to make sense of how we survived it. With our friends, fellow comedians, and favorite authors. Like Mark Lamont Hill on the 80s.
Starting point is 00:01:22 84 was a wild year. It was a wild year. I don't think there's a more important year for black people. Listen to look back at it on the IHeart radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. A win is a win. A win is a win. I don't care what I'm saying. Yep, that's me, Clifford Taylor the 4th.
Starting point is 00:01:41 You might have seen the skits, my basketball and college football journey, or my career in sports media. Well, now I'm bringing all of that excitement to my brand new podcast, The Clifers Show. This is a place for raw, unfilled conversations with athletes, creators, and voices that not only deserve to be heard, but celebrated. So let's get to it. Listen to the Clifford show on the IHeard Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcast. And for more behind the scenes, follow at Clifford and at TikTok podcast network on TikTok. Thanks for listening to The Heard podcast. Be sure to catch us live every weekday from 12 to 3 Eastern, 9 to noon Pacific on Fox Sports Radio and FS1.
Starting point is 00:02:18 Find your local station for the Heard at Fox Sports Radio.com or stream us live every day on the iHeart radio app by searching Heard. You're listening to Fox Sports Radio. Here we go, it's Tower 2. We're live in L.A. Part of America. Maybe falling apart of the seams, but part of America.
Starting point is 00:02:39 This is the herd, wherever you may be, and however you may be listening. We're on Fox Sports Radio and FS1. I like when I have Nick Wright and Joel Clad on the same day because I am like the mentor. I can teach them the ways of the world. They need sometimes, they have a lot of opinions. They're very blustery,
Starting point is 00:02:53 but I like to set them straight with my mentorship. And so I already had to teach Nick Wright about the world, and Joel Clack comes on in five minutes. Joy, Taylor, how are you? I'm good. Well, Joel's here. He doesn't have his hat on backwards, so. He's got that going for him. As you wear with Nick. So, I got to touch on this story, big report yesterday. I don't know who wrote the story.
Starting point is 00:03:16 Ramona Shelbur. She does a great job, ESPN. So Steve Balmer consulted with Kauai Leonard and Paul George before the Doc River situation. I didn't like him getting fired. Joy didn't. I thought he was the leader on the team since Kauai doesn't talk. And there he goes. So for the results for the clippers to change. two players are going to have to change. And Kauai is 29 and Paul George is 30. And people, your personalities are formed between six and nine years old. And there, if you want to change and you go to therapy, you can make alterations.
Starting point is 00:03:45 But people's personalities are formed. And Kauai and Paul George are now seasoned NBA veterans. They're not going to change. Kauai doesn't talk. He's nonverbal. And Paul George, there's some anxiety in the playoffs. He shrinks. That's why I like Doc Rivers.
Starting point is 00:03:59 He was the leader. If you go to the last 30 years of the NBA, all we do is pay attention to stars. But there's been a lot of stars in the NBA. Leadership wins NBA championships. Like we know that in football. We know that in baseball, right? But it doesn't basketball. You go back to Michael Jordan.
Starting point is 00:04:18 It was Phil Jackson and Michael was a great leader. Magic Johnson was a great leader. Kareem wasn't. Kareem wasn't a great leader. He was prickly and aloof. Magic Pat Riley. Then Pat Riley goes to Miami and D. Wade. two great leaders.
Starting point is 00:04:31 And then you've had the Celtics with Bird, Larry Bird, great leadership. McCale, both became general managers. Then you look at the Spurs, great leadership. And LeBron now, he's been a great leader. And when he joined Miami and Pat Riley in Spolster, you had the Troika, and Dewey that was four great leaders in Bosch. So the NBA is not just about stars. It's either the last 30 years to win a title.
Starting point is 00:04:54 You either have a leader as a player, a leader as an organization, the Spurs, or a leader as a coach like Popovit. It's not just, Carmelo had talent. Blake Griffin had talent. So what you need is Kauai to be a leader. Here's what doesn't win in the NBA. Now, when Kauai entered San Antonio, they already had great chemistry. He wasn't asked to create it.
Starting point is 00:05:14 He was a mercenary. Come in, make shots, make stops. When he went to Toronto, they were winning games. They already had great veteran leadership in chemistry. He was a mercenary, make shots, make stops. In L.A., create leadership. You know what? doesn't create leadership.
Starting point is 00:05:33 Great players who were quirky. Great players who were awed. Westbrook, Hardin. Great players who are quiet, nonverbal, Kauai. So you're asking Kauai now and Paul George, who, by the way, you think there was pressure on the Clippers last year, this year? Well, next year, they can both leave. So they got to make it work, or they can both, you think they're going to stick
Starting point is 00:05:54 around if they get knocked out in the first or second round next year? So to me, you have two guys who are talented, but not. great leaders. Doc was the leader. He's the Joe Torrey of the NBA. I don't know if he's the best exes and O's coach. He's fine. But like Joe Torrey, he's an alpha. He gets the room. He makes stars work together. He can appeal to the kind of grinder, blue collar player, the bench guy. And Joe Tori could appeal to Arod and Jeter. And Doc can appeal to the bench guy. The guy that's hard to get along, Rondo in Boston, the great player, Kevin Garnett. He can appeal to all these alpha male millionaires in the room and you lost him. And that's
Starting point is 00:06:30 the leadership goes to a guy that doesn't talk. I think that's very difficult to do. So I think the clippers have themselves a handful. And by the way, LeBron looks energized. AD's the best he's ever been and he's healthy. And they'll probably move some players and get a more dependable third guy. If the Lakers win this year without a dependable third guy, watch out. All right.
Starting point is 00:06:53 Let's bring him in. Joel Clatt, the voice of college football at FS1. First week he was pretty good. Don't want to give him too much credit. But whatever. You got TCU in Texas. What's going on? You got TCU.
Starting point is 00:07:04 Do you know how I know I'm your mentor and leader to be more specific? Because you saved your best take for when I was in the room. That was a good take. Thanks. Good job. Watch the show. I got about nine of them a day. Well, it's like two and a half.
Starting point is 00:07:17 And like only a half when I'm actually sitting in the chair. So fire away. Let me start with a question. I watched Texas last week. The Sam Ellinger kid. He reminds me of Tebow, but he can throw. Okay. Is he an NFL prospect?
Starting point is 00:07:28 I can't tell. I think so. In particular with the way that the league is changing, right? I think 10 years ago it would have been much more of a question. He would have been a total backup reach. Yeah, and now I think he's a better thrower than Jalen Hertz, who was a second round draft pick. And now we're talking about him in Philadelphia. So, yeah, I mean, he throws the ball very well, in particular down the field.
Starting point is 00:07:48 And by the way, in crunch time last week, in the last three minutes, they're down 15. In the three minutes and 13 seconds that he had to come back, he was eight of nine for over 100 yards and three touchdowns. So like crunch time throws and he's obviously tough. He's a big guy. You talk about leadership. He is the alpha of the program. They certainly don't win that game without him. Everybody takes their cues from him.
Starting point is 00:08:10 So yes, I will say Sam Ellinger is an NFL quarterback. Is he a first rounder? I don't know. Maybe I doubt that. Could he get into the second round? Yep, maybe. And you know what? With the way that Baker and Kyler flew up the board in their last year or even Joe
Starting point is 00:08:23 Burrow in their last year, you never know with a guy like Ellinger. If he has a monster year in particular throwing the football, he could find himself in the first round. I don't put it past him. Texas, TCU, you have that game this weekend. Because I was watching him this weekend, and I thought to myself two years ago, I didn't think he was an NFL player,
Starting point is 00:08:39 but the league now, they come in all shapes and sizes. And I'm watching them, like, I think he's an NFL player now. And in particular, with some of the poor quarterback player we're seeing in the NFL. Yeah. Even with the number of points being scored. So I'm going to throw this out. And don't go into the weeds on this.
Starting point is 00:08:54 Don't give me some punt coordinator for Purdue. Okay. When the Jets fire Gase, give me the top two college coach. Now, Lincoln Riley's one, right? I think he would be one of them, yeah. Give me another college coach or two that could work in the NFL. Ryan Day. Boy, he's coached an hour.
Starting point is 00:09:14 Barely coached in college. Okay. I mean, that's fine. That's not a lot of resume there. He's a really, really good coach, a really good coach. I think if you're going to have a third guy, I would probably go. it would be Riley Day, probably Brian Kelly. There we go.
Starting point is 00:09:29 Can I say this? Notre Dame fans will both admit. Cuckoo. Little delusional. This guy is doing what the previous three or four guys couldn't since Lou Holtz. They're in a good stretch right now. That's a good program. That's a top six program in America.
Starting point is 00:09:46 And it's hard academically. It's kind of remote. The weather's not great. I look at Brian Kelly and I'm like, I'm sorry. He's gone to three places, one big. By the way, he makes his quarterbacks aren't really NFL guys, but he wins. I think Brian Kelly gets a bad, like, I don't know what it is. Is he too gruff?
Starting point is 00:10:04 Is he too collegiate? I think that he can be a little rough on quarterbacks. Yes. Right? And in particular, in an outward fashion, I think he's gotten way better over the last couple of years. By the way, Cofflin was too rough. He was.
Starting point is 00:10:18 He pulled back. You know, what's interesting is that his coordinator now is Tommy Reese. and Tommy played for him earlier in his career at Notre Dame. Yeah, Tommy Reese. And he was really tough on Tommy in particular, like right on the sideline, walk off the field and it's like, boom, we're going to have a confrontation. We're going to have, I'm going to shout at you right here. Well, now he doesn't really have to do that because one of the guys that he mentored,
Starting point is 00:10:42 Tommy Reese, is now the offensive coordinator. So I think it's easier for Ian Book to play for Brian Kelly now than it was for Tommy Reese to play for Brian Kelly a few years ago. And I think that that's helped them. and makes them a really good program. I think in the ACC, you're looking at Miami, who's a resurgent team, Clemson and Notre Dame, as the three teams that could potentially come out of that league.
Starting point is 00:11:00 I'm a Brian Kelly fan. I think he does remind me a little of Tom Coughlin, where he's a little intense. He needs to scale back a little. You know, when Coughlin in New York. But I think he's done that. Oh, that's the thing. And Brian has two.
Starting point is 00:11:13 I think he's done that, to his credit. And so I think you're right. But no, I would start with those three guys. I think you could get into the weeds, by the way, like Jeff Halfley is the brand new coach at Boston College, but the deal is he's got significant NFL ties, right? He went to Ohio State last year from being the defensive back coach with San Francisco. So those type of guys, I feel like NFL GMs and decision makers look at
Starting point is 00:11:36 and they say, okay, he could probably make the jump because he was just here a couple of years ago. So you were a quarterback in college at Colorado, and they only threw the ball three or four times a game, but he broke all their records, but you do have pretty good instincts. He's smart. Go play a low bar. I would say this. We're at a new time. These college quarterbacks are way better, and they're way better early. And even the guys I didn't even like out of college, like Josh Allen, gets Brian Dable as a coach, and you're like, oh, hell, he's good.
Starting point is 00:12:06 Yeah, this works. This is Big Ben. This works. So I've said before, I used to have a really good barometer of what would work, and now I'm like, yeah, I'm going to watch it for a year. So I like Sam Darnold. He's got nothing to work with. Trevor Lawrence is available tomorrow. You're the GM of the Jets and the Giants.
Starting point is 00:12:24 Daniel Jones, Sam Darnold. What do you do? That's a tough one. I don't think it's tough with the Giants case. I think that Lawrence is an easy pick for the Giants there. And that's not a huge knock on Daniel Jones. I just think Lawrence is a generational talent. I would probably go Lawrence over Donald,
Starting point is 00:12:44 and you can probably trade Donald for a lot of draft picks or the number one pick for a lot of draft picks. So you're in a really good spot if you're the Jets and you land on that spot, number one, because you're going to get a haul, either for Darnold or for the pick. Does Lawrence have a weakness? That's a guy.
Starting point is 00:13:04 Not really. That's what I think. Not really. Maybe not the strongest arm, but it's not weak. You know, I mean, it's not a howitzer, but he's, I mean, he's really, really good. And I think what makes him so good also is that he's got significant leadership traits.
Starting point is 00:13:21 You just got done talking about leadership in the NBA. It's the same in football as well. You've got to have leadership. We've known it for years. And he's got excellent leadership traits to the point where he was, along with Justin Fields, by the way, he'll be right up there in the draft as well. They were two of the big reasons why we're even playing football in the fall. Think about it.
Starting point is 00:13:40 Remember how outspoken they were not just for their teams, not just in their local communities, but for the sport. And I think that that shows amazing, amazing. maturity and leadership ability from a guy like Lawrence. I don't see a lot of weaknesses with him. By the way, that game Thursday night with Denver, that could be for the number one seed, or excuse me, the number one pick. Denver's got $57 million on the IR. Denver's, they're starting Brett Rippin. I mean, Denver's going to be in that race for the number one pick. And I know a lot of people, I grew up there, a lot of people there hoping that they
Starting point is 00:14:11 get the number one pick so that they can take Trevor Lawrence and move on. Yeah, I mean, to me, he is more naturally talented than Andrew Luck, who I thought, Elway, I said with Andrew Luck, he's a no-but. You can't. He is the best thing since Elway where I know he'll never bust, which he didn't. Lawrence is more talented. He is. And for his sake, you just hope that he goes someplace that has some weapons,
Starting point is 00:14:32 that has some stability at the coaching spots, in particular offensive coordinator. Because we've seen young quarterbacks with talent fall early in their career because they don't have a lack of consistency with their offensive coordinator. So Oklahoma loss this week. and, you know, they throw a teenager out there, no wonder. And then the LSU lost, which, you know, Burrell's pretty good. He's no longer there. They're not the same program.
Starting point is 00:14:54 I'm going to throw a crazy one at you. Okay. Go. So LSU loves their football. The SEC, it's crazy town, right? Like Gene Chisick has a bad year after winning the national title, and the boosters won him out. They're like out of here. Ed Orgeron, year two, lost at home to Troy.
Starting point is 00:15:11 Joe Burrell saved his job. They didn't win a lot of games. Joe Burrow leaves. They go back. They're not very good. Ed Orgeron, they're doing 60 minutes pieces on him. The truth about Ed or Geron overwhelmingly in the sport, great coordinator. Head coach, not so sure. By the end of this year, LSU's got five losses. Orgeron's in trouble. Maybe. I mean, not at the end of this year. Two things. One is they were so historically great a year ago that that's going to carry him for a while. That 15.
Starting point is 00:15:40 What they did was extraordinary. Number two is, with the pandemic and the financial hit that these programs are taking, you're not going to see a lot of people making coaching moves after this season regardless, much less guys that have big buyouts. And then maybe a third point and to your point, I can't wait to see what he is without Burrow and without Joe Brady, the offensive coordinator, because the fact remains to be a great coach in college football, you have to win not just once, but over cycles of recruits.
Starting point is 00:16:14 Right? Like, we know Nick Sabin's a great coach. We know Dabo Sweeney is a great coach. We know Urban Meyer was a great coach. We're still seeing this being proven out with Lincoln Riley or Ryan Day and all these young coaches because we've seen those guys win over cycles of recruits. We don't know if Ed O'Geron can do that. Are they going to go right back to being the 10 and 3, 9 and 4 LSU team that was prior to Burrow and Brady? And by the way, they were unhappy with him. Like he was in trouble. Ed Orgeron admits pre-Burrow, they were going to get rid of it. him. There was a lot of the boosters lining up. And then Burrow arrives and it's birds and sunshine and pots of gold. Some contacts here, though, they were decimated by the draft. They obviously don't have Burrow, but they didn't have any of their good defensive players, including Derek Steenley, their corner. And so they lose to Mississippi State. And it's a weird time. It should be noted, by the way, Bo Polini was the coach at Nebraska when Melvin Gordon set the NCAA FBS record for rushing yards in a game. And then now he's the coordinator for LSU.
Starting point is 00:17:14 when Leach and company come down with a transfer quarterback and set the SEC passing record. Bo Polini will get Ed Ogeron and Hot Water quicker than anything else down there. Because we've seen it and it hasn't really worked. You know, it's like you're trying to dip back 15 years to when Bo Polini was a really good defensive coordinator. In the last 10 years, we haven't seen him work really anywhere. So I'm going to throw this out there. We're doing a lot of coaching talk and all that stuff. And, you know, we know the legends in this sport.
Starting point is 00:17:44 Thank God Tom Herman won, or this TCU game. It would get noisy in Austin. If they lost to TCU, the boosters will go into the president's office and the athletic director's office and say, what's the... Patterson owns Herman in Texas. Like TCU constantly, last year, this was Ellinger's worst performance. Okay, so here's my point. We'll go back to Texas. It doesn't feel like a must win.
Starting point is 00:18:07 If you're USC, you must beat Cal all. the time. Yes. Even Cal's best team, you have better players. Yes. If Tom Herman loses again to TCU, it's bad news. I'm telling you, it doesn't feel good for him. He's got to start winning the state.
Starting point is 00:18:24 Yes. And that's something that does not get talked a lot about. He doesn't have the annual game with Texas A&M to flex your muscle in state so you can open up the back door and get all the great recruits in the state of Texas. And they haven't been great against teams like Baylor and TCU and everything. At some point, you've got to be the alpha in your state. You look around college football. Name one team that's not the alpha in their own state that can be a great program.
Starting point is 00:18:52 None. Maybe Auburn, but they're kind of hit or miss. Roller coaster. Year over year. They're not Alabama. You know, it's the same problem with teams like Michigan State. It's the same problem that Cal runs into. It's the same problem that UCLA runs into.
Starting point is 00:19:07 It's the same problem Stanford runs into. You've got to be the alpha in your own state. So I certainly agree with that. He knows it. And I know that in all of his press conferences this week, they have talked about the importance of playing this game. And Patterson talks about the importance of to his players of playing a school like Texas where they all dreamed to go.
Starting point is 00:19:26 Right? Like everybody who suits up for TCU dreamed of wearing the Texas uniform. That's where they wanted to be. So they play with a monster chip on their shoulder during the course of that game. And that's why I can't wait to be out this game. I was hoping that we would select it and we did. Yeah, noon. It's going to be on Fox, TCU at Tech.
Starting point is 00:19:45 Oh, it's at Austin. Yes. You know, they've got good food and music down there. Have you ever been there? They do, but we're like hold up. We like fly in and we're distance and they're like, don't see anybody. Don't go out of anywhere. It's like, yeah, I can see that.
Starting point is 00:19:57 We've got to be very responsible. Okay. That's why it's leadership, Colin. Okay. Three more questions. I want an answer, a quick answer. Fast. Okay.
Starting point is 00:20:06 Okay. How long is Harbaugh remaining at Michigan? if they finish with two losses. indefinitely. Clemson's the best football team in the country, right or wrong? Right. Ohio State will dominate the Big Ten, but be exposed against SEC quality. Incorrect.
Starting point is 00:20:25 They're the second best team in the country. Clemson plays Ohio State for the national championship. Lincoln Riley will leave for the Jets job when offered. No. Wants to win a national championship, mentored by Bob Stoops, wants to win one there at Norman. They're in their longest drought. now between national championships and their program history.
Starting point is 00:20:42 He wants to fix it. Trey Lance will be drafted ahead of Justin Fields in the draft, not Trevor Lawrence. Uh, wrong. Fields will be the second quarterback taken probably number two overall. You got two of those right. You're not. You're unbelievable. All right.
Starting point is 00:20:58 Joel Clat, actually a great game. TCU at Texas. Yeah, I can't wait for this one. Noon Eastern. It's going to be a fantastic. If you didn't see the end of Texas last weekend, nuts. It was just fantastic. You know what?
Starting point is 00:21:09 You did good job today. Well done. Yeah. You don't do a good job always, but today you did a good job. Listen, when you do the prep and you're a professional, you know where your hat on backwards. You know what? I bet you in college were a hat on backwards guy. Not a chance.
Starting point is 00:21:23 I was raised by a former Marine. Thank you. And by the way, what a Marine say? What is their saying? Simperify. And hat on forward. I didn't know that that was a saying for the Marines, but. Oh, it was forever.
Starting point is 00:21:34 Really? So I would, I've never worn a hat backwards publicly. Have you? Well, I mean. Maybe when I was a teenager once or twice. And what Dad say? That's not what it's made for. That's what he would say.
Starting point is 00:21:47 He also told me if I ever got a tattoo, he would sandpaper it off. He's a Marine. Don't mess around. Inkless. There you go. I got one. It was a bad day. A couple cocktails later and I discovered it.
Starting point is 00:22:00 Well, you didn't have a mentor. Now I'm here. Don't worry about it. Joel clad, everybody. Coming up next, why the Patriots line, money is pouring in on New England against. the Chiefs. Talk about that. Want more herd? The herd streams 24 hours a day, seven days a week, within the IHeart

And now I'm bringing all of that excitement to my brand new podcast, The Clifford Show. What the hell does George Bush got to do with Little Kim? Well, you can find out on the look back at it podcast. I'm Sam J. And I'm Alex English. Each episode, we pick it here, unpack what went down,
Starting point is 00:24:13 and try to make sense of how we survived it, including a recent episode with Mark Lamont Hill, waxing all about crack in the 80s. To be clear, 84 is big to me, not just because of crack. I'm down to talk about crack on day, but just so y'all know. I mean, at this point, this is the second episode where we've discussed crack, so I'm starting to see that there's a through line. We also have AIDS on the table right now. So. Thank you for finishing that sentence. I don't think there's a more important year for black people. Really?
Starting point is 00:24:43 Yeah. For me, it's one of the most important years for black people in American history. Listen to look back at it on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Welcome to my new podcast, Learn the Hard Way with me, your host, and your favorite therapist, Kear Games. And in recognition of Mental Health Awareness Month, I'm bringing over a decade of my own experience in the mental health field and conversational. with so many incredible guests. I'm talking. Trip Fontaine, Ryan Clark.
Starting point is 00:25:09 Sometimes when we're in the pursuit of the thing, we get so wrapped up in the chase that we don't realize that we are in possession of the thing. And we're still chasing it. And we don't know when we've done enough. Because people scoreboard watch. Life becomes about wins and losses. Steve Burns, Dustin Ross.
Starting point is 00:25:28 Because you find it important to be a good person while you hear on earth. Are you a good person because you're afraid? Because that's two different intentions, Absolutely. And that's two different levels of trust. I want you to just really be a good person. Join me, Kear Gaines, is we have real conversations about healing, growth, fatherhood, pressure, and purpose on my new podcast, Learn the Hardway.
Starting point is 00:25:49 Open your free, our Heart Radio app. Search Learn the Hardway and listen now. Baseball's postseason is coming, and in just seven days, FS1 will be your home for the National League Division Series. Yeah, baby. It all gets underway on Tuesday, the NLDS. on FS1 and the Fox Sports app. Very exciting. Yankees were really good, then awful,
Starting point is 00:26:14 and then they got hot again. The Dodgers have been good all year. Yeah, Yankees won big yesterday, so it's not that we're rooting for specific teams, although when the Yankees face like, you know, Cubs, Dodgers, that stuff, it does feel big. Right now, Geico's offering 15% on credit, motorcycle, and RV policies, 15% off.
Starting point is 00:26:33 You got to apply. Go to geico.com by October 7%. 7th, Joy Taylor with the news. No, no, no, no. Turn on the news. This is the herd line news. Sponsored by Mercedes-Benz, the best or nothing. Tom Brady will be missing one of his top targets Sunday when the Bucks faced the chargers.
Starting point is 00:26:53 Chris Godwin will reportedly sit out week four with a hamstring injury. Again, he had a concussion protocol and now a hamming. Yeah, there's also a chance he could miss their week five matchup with the Bears next Thursday night. As you mentioned, this is his second miss game this season. out with a concussion in week two. Had a great season last year, 89 receptions, 1,333 yards, and nine touchdowns. So Justin Watson got a little more playing time with Chris Goblin out. Week two against the Panthers.
Starting point is 00:27:20 He had two receptions for 48 yards. Scotty Miller could also see some increased time as well. Yeah, in a weird way, Joy, this sounds weird, but it's almost a little bit of a break for Brady because he can develop his relationship more with Evans and Scotty Miller. and drunk. They have so many pieces. I mean, I wonder if actually his hamstring is sore, and Bruce Ariens is like, actually, I'd like to save you a little bit. Like Tom, Tom has acknowledged that like the first two weeks, he wouldn't throw to tight ends. Like, this in a weird way is almost perfect. So let's get the Evans thing down, the tight ends thing down, the Leonard Fernett thing down,
Starting point is 00:27:59 then Godwin comes in adds another element to it. So I don't think it hurts at all, actually, for this week. I think in a weird way, one of Tom's struggles is, I've never had anything close to this many weapons. Well, yeah, I mean, to your point, he's going to be able to develop some more time and reps with Mike Evans. You always want your best pieces out there, obviously, but they are fortunate. They do have a lot of weapons, so they don't have to rush Chris Goblin back, who is a huge factor for them.
Starting point is 00:28:23 You rather just have him sit, be healthy. Those type of injuries can be lingering. So if you were fortunate enough to have multiple weapons, as the buccaneers do, don't rush him back, but hopefully they get him back soon. So the Texans won't be bringing in safety Earl Thomas. right now after all. His following reports that he was headed to Houston for a workout and would likely join the team this week. The Texans have decided not to sign him. One report to the team sent him home before his scheduled workout because they decided it wasn't a good fit. But Bill
Starting point is 00:28:51 O'Brien said this morning they decided to send home all players they had scheduled workouts with as a precaution following the closures of team facilities in Tennessee and Minnesota. So kind of a strange situation there. I mean, if you really needed, somebody and you were planning on signing them, you would probably find a way to safely work them out. Houston needs the win, like now, like this week. He said they'll see how it goes with Thomas moving forward. They're playing the Vikings on Sunday. I like Minnesota.
Starting point is 00:29:20 Kind of a muslin game for both of those teams. Oh, yeah, it is. I like Minnesota in that game. The Texans go 0 and 4. Yeah, but let's be honest about the Texans. We've been selling that stock for a year since we've been working together. Like, we've never trusted them. We just think Deshawn's the life preserve.
Starting point is 00:29:37 on a sinking ship. I mean, Deshaun Watson is the only reason why I give them any credit. Over time, now, he can't even save him. Like, you can't be poorly run and winning this. I don't care who your quarterback is. You can't. This feels like it's just one of those things. It was like a house of cards.
Starting point is 00:29:53 Like he was keeping it going. And in the end, you're like, okay, even Deshaun can't keep it going. Well, also, he's been hit 13 times. Joe Burrell's been hit 14 times. Like, after a while, what else can he possibly do? You're not protecting him. You get rid of his biggest weapon. Like, what is Deshawn Watson and all his greatness supposed to do?
Starting point is 00:30:13 As you said, you can only carry it so far. Finally, the NBA Finals between the Heat and Lakers start tonight. Yeah. Very excited to have sports back. I'm having people over. Last night was a lot for everybody. You having people over? I'm having people over.
Starting point is 00:30:27 I had friends over last night. I would not watch the debate. I wasn't going to go through that angst. I knew what it was going to be. I knew it was going to be a S show. Because, you know, Trump was just going to be obnoxious. By the way, I thought Biden won because I watched about 15 clips this morning. The reason I thought Biden won is because our expectations for Biden were don't like show like, don't lose it.
Starting point is 00:30:49 And in the end, he didn't. And that's a win. By the way, all the polls say Biden did himself well. There was a lot that happened last night. It was a collective sigh when that was over. We've got two more to sit through. By the way, two people nearing 80 running for president. If you don't make this a more viable job either economically, I mean, that's our, this is what we have.
Starting point is 00:31:07 now. I mean, that's our fault. Thank you. It is. There's no one to point fingers out for that. There's nobody at 48 in the country. Would you want to? Oh, God, no. It's too vile. I mean, I wouldn't want to put anyone through that. You think I'm, you think, well, okay, I haven't, I've never freaked out in front of Colin, so you wouldn't know. But no one's going to talk about my family to my face.
Starting point is 00:31:27 Yeah, I know. And that's how it's going to be handled. I'm going to say something very, very mean. Anyway, tonight is the finals, which will be much more pleasant. And Miami is coming into the same. series as an underdog, but Jimmy Butler says the team is not concerned about what anyone thinks about how they're going to do against the Lakers. I'm not going to say that we're any better than anybody else, but I just don't think that we're underdogs. I don't.
Starting point is 00:31:51 So what? Nobody picked us to be here. That's okay. Pretty sure nobody's picking us to win either. That's okay. But we understand that. We embrace that because at the end of the day, we truly don't care. We just going to go out here and compete, play together like we always have.
Starting point is 00:32:07 and I'm going to see where we end up. I mean, the heat are playing with house money. So what do they, what do they have to lose in this series? That's the advantage also. No crowds. Young players flourish in this environment. So the Tyler Heroes, the Duncan Robinson's, Bamada Bayou's, they've been great in the bubble. They don't have to face.
Starting point is 00:32:27 And that's why I think it's kind of a unique situation. Because while we're all, we've all kind of collectively watched the bubble and seen how things played out. And to your point, the younger players are just. doing better. There's been some quirky things. Clippers fell apart. But at the end of the day, all of the pressures on the Lakers and LeBron. I mean, if LeBron loses this. I mean, here's the thing. If you're there, it doesn't feel like the NBA finals. So it's a real advantage to Miami because this is where guys shrink, right? Like, we know LeBron and AD aren't
Starting point is 00:32:58 going to shrink. They're playing in a theater. So even though it's the NBA finals for us, the viewers, as a player, it just feels like a basketball game. Right. And the heat were favorites in all the games against the Pacers and swept the series, but they were underdogs in the first four games against the Bucks. Obviously, went three and one, and they were underdogs in all the games against the Celtics and won four two. Lakers are favored by four and a half
Starting point is 00:33:19 in game one tonight, all odds provided by Fox Betts. Already bet that one. Lakers are a favorite minus 350 to win the title Heat plus 300. I'm very, very excited for tonight. Oh, it's a great fine. It's great story. NBA is the Story League. These are great
Starting point is 00:33:35 stories. You're right. This is this is very unique. The finals have a different feel to them. I talked to Chris Bosch yesterday, and he said, you know, when you really realize that you're in the finals is when you lose a game in the finals. Like it's cruising, you're at the finals. It's exciting. When you lose a game in the finals, that one sits with you a little differently and you realize, okay, this is the real deal. This is when the pressure's on. But you're not going to have the crowds. You'll have us talking about it, obviously, so you'll still hear that. But it's just going to be a very different situation. Yeah, it's been fascinating. Leadership from the Miami Heat and LeBron James,
Starting point is 00:34:06 leadership once again rises to the top in this sport. Joy with the news. Well, that's the news. And thanks for stopping by. The herd line. So the line is dropping Kansas City, New England. It started seven. It's now down to six and a half. People are betting New England. There's two reasons. Because we all think, you know, Kansas City is unbelievable. Number one is people tend to overvalue Monday night performances. Drew Breeze can't play. The Raiders are great. Stephen Gaskowski's a bomb. Stephen Goscowski went six for six last weekend. So Kansas City probably plays their best game as a team.
Starting point is 00:34:42 This was the circle game on their schedule in September, facing Baltimore, the one threat in their eyes for the number one seat. Because nobody thought New England was going to get, you know, be this good. So they looked at that Baltimore game and it was a circle game. Now it was a circle game for Baltimore too, but they're not as good. But New England's circle game is this game because they're the big dogs for 20 years. and now there's a new big dog in these Kansas City. So Kansas City just played their circle game.
Starting point is 00:35:10 Generally, you're not quite the same emotionally the next week. This is New England's circle game. Also, Kansas City, Belichick has seen this offense several times. That doesn't make it a walk in the park. But Kansas City's not seen this cam offense, not in real time and real speed. That's an advantage. This New England offense, I think we're just forgetting something. Look at what they're doing in the last two weeks.
Starting point is 00:35:35 up and down the field against Seattle, up and down the field against the Raiders. Those are not great defenses, but Kansas City doesn't have a great defense. So I think you're going to see, my guess is a lot of running. Cam's accurate. They keep it really pro-cam, a lot of running, a lot of looks. We know the back end for New England. The secondary is fantastic. Two teams in this league right now are getting a pass rush without blitzing.
Starting point is 00:36:03 New England gets a pass rush. and Tampa Bay gets a pass rush. There's probably more. Those are the two I've watched the most. And I think that's the way to beat Kansas City. Get a pass rush with four, drop seven into coverage. So I'm not going to bet it. I'm going to stay away.
Starting point is 00:36:18 This is not part of my Blazing Five. I'm not betting against the Chiefs until they lose. And they have been unbelievable September, early October under Andy Reed and Pat Mahomes. But the line is dropping, and that's the reason for it. Coming up next, one of my favorite games, two truths and a lie. The NBA finals edition with LeBron. Two truths and a lie. Be sure to catch live editions of the herd weekdays in noon Eastern, 9 a.m. Pacific on Fox Sports Radio, FS1, and the IHeart Radio app.
Starting point is 00:36:50 Imagine an Olympics where doping is not only legal but encouraged. It's the enhanced games. Some call it grotesque. Others say it's unleashing human potential. Either way, the podcast's superhuman documented it all, embedded in the games and with the athletes for a full year. Within probably 10 days, I'd put on 10 pounds. I was having trouble stopping the muscle growth.
Starting point is 00:37:14 Listen to Superhuman on the I-Hard Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. A win is a win. A win is a win. I don't care which I'm saying. Starting point is 00:38:22 Do you remember when Diana Ross double-tap Little Kim's boobs at the VMAs? Or when Kanye said that George Bush didn't like black people. I know what you're thinking. What the hell does George Bush got to do with Little Kim? Well, you're saying? can find out on the Look Back at it podcast. I'm Sam Jette.
Starting point is 00:38:37 And I'm Alex English. Each episode, we pick it here, unpack what went down, and try to make sense of how we survived it. Including a recent episode with Mark Lamont Hill, waxing all about crack in the 80s. To be clear, 84 is big to me, not just because of crack. I'm down to talk about crack all day, but just so you all know. I mean, at this point, Mark, this is the second episode where we've discussed crack. So I'm starting to see that there's a through line. We also have AIDS on the table right now.
Starting point is 00:39:04 Thank you for finishing that sentence. I don't think there's a more important year for black people. Really? Yeah. For me, it's one of the most important years for black people in American history. Listen to look back at it on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Welcome to my new podcast, Learn the Hardway with me, your host, and your favorite therapist, Kear Games. And in recognition of Mental Health Awareness Month, I'm bringing over a decade of my own experience in the mental health field and comments.
Starting point is 00:39:34 conversations with so many incredible guests. I'm talking. Tripp Fontaine, Ryan Clark. Sometimes when we're in the pursuit of the thing, we get so wrapped up in the chase that we don't realize that we are in possession of the thing. And we're still chasing it. And we don't know when we've done enough.
Starting point is 00:39:51 Because people scoreboard watch. Life becomes about wins and losses. Steve Burns, Dustin Ross. Because you find it important to be a good person while you hear on earth? Are you a good person because you're afraid? Because that's two different intentions. bro. Absolutely. And that's two different
Starting point is 00:40:06 levels of trust. I want you to just really be a good person. Open your free iHeartRadio app. Search, learn the hard way, and listen now. Rec tech's more than a grill to lifestyle. Built by
Starting point is 00:40:26 grillers, four grillers. Smart grill technology allows for an even heat. Go to rectech with a q.com, R-C-T-E-C-E-C-E-C-E-C-E-C-E-C-E-C-E-E-C-E-E-E-C-E-E-E-C-E-E-E-C. T-E-Q.com. Rec Tech. They're great. All right. It's called two truths and a lie. The NBA finals begin tonight. And Joy gives me three statements. Two are true and one is a lie. Let's play this together, shall we? All right. Let's start with the Miami Heat's Jimmy Butler. He has a cameo in a Taylor Swift video. Eats dessert first when he goes out to eat. He removed the rearview mirror in his car because he doesn't like to look at the past.
Starting point is 00:41:06 Two are true and one's a lie. I think he removed the rear view mirror in the car because he doesn't like to look in the past is a lie. That is true. Yeah, that would be dangerous. It is dangerous. It's true, though. The lie is that he was in a Taylor Swift video.
Starting point is 00:41:25 He loves her, but he has not been in any videos. That seemed the most obvious because you could check that one. So I need to watch more videos. Every single one of Taylor Swift's video. to check for that, yes. My grandmother always told me to eat dessert because you never know what's coming next. So she ordered that first.
Starting point is 00:41:41 Bam out of bio. Loves Katie Perry and her music, so maybe he's beefing with Jimmy Butler, declined in an invitation to a Nike basketball camp because he had chemistry homework, got his nickname because his mom loved Emerald-Adossi. I'm going to say the lie is he loves Katie Perry and her music. He loves Katie Perry.
Starting point is 00:42:04 He loves Katie Perry. He did not get his nickname because his mom loved Emerald Agassi. And he's very dedicated to his homework. He's getting lucky basketball camp for chemistry homework. I kind of like that. That's a good kid. Tyler Hero. His senior quote was Catch Flights Not Feelings.
Starting point is 00:42:23 He was Homecoming King and Prom King of his senior year in high school. He was booed by native Wisconsinites the first time he played the Bucks. So which one's a lie? He's too much of an athlete to be homecoming and prom king His senior year of high school, that's a lie Correct, that was a lie He's too busy, he's playing basketball, he's traveling all the time That's not true, I played four sports in high school
Starting point is 00:42:52 And I was still homecoming queen And you were petty? Maybe he wasn't a popular I grew to be petty as I was older, I was actually nice in high school You have a lot of awards I find out about The more I know you, you want a bunch of awards Well, I am awesome. Pat Riley owns a line of cigars called Champion
Starting point is 00:43:08 had his own video game didn't miss the playoffs until his 20th season as a head coach. That's a lie. The third one's a lie. That is true. Pat Riley is excellence personified. He does not have his own line of cigars called Champion, although that is a very good business idea, Pat.
Starting point is 00:43:28 You should try that. Who came out with that on our staff? That's smart. So he does not own a line of cigars called Champion. No, but he should. He also had his own video game. Pat Riley basketball. on Sega Genesis, which was probably my favorite video game.
Starting point is 00:43:43 Yeah, yeah, I remember that. I love Sega Genesis. All right, now to the Lakers. Anthony Davis has a twin sister named Antoinette, has his own flavor of Ruffles Potato Chips, played high school baseball until his growth spurt. So one of those is a lie. Yes.
Starting point is 00:44:06 No, I don't, I think it's a lie that he played high school baseball until his growth spurt. Got one right. He did not. He has his own flavor of ruffles, potato chips called Ler Lime and Halapino. That sounds good, actually. That's funny. That's real. Okay. Yes, that is real. All right. Dwight Howard wears number 12 in honor of Kevin Garnett. He has a Superman tattoo on his chest.
Starting point is 00:44:32 I think that's true, yeah. First player directly out of high school to start all 82 games his rookie year. I think it's a lot. that he wears number 12 in honor of Kevin Garnett. That is true. He reversed his number 21. That is true, not false. Yeah, he does not have a Superman tattoo on his chest.
Starting point is 00:44:52 He doesn't? I've seen him without a shirt before in a Laker locker room. I thought he did. I think he has a Superman tattoo on his shoulder, I believe, but not on his chest. Rajan Rondo was almost straight to the Celtics to OKC for Russell Westbrook in 2012. He played quarterback in high school, made it to the final four two times like Kentucky. What's a lie?
Starting point is 00:45:17 You know, Greg Anthony played quarterback in high school. I covered it. It was the first high school football game in Vegas ever went to, Rancho High School. Greg Anthony was the quarterback, a little left-hander. So Rondo looks like to me he could be a quarterback. Did he make the final four two times? I'm going to say number one, almost traded by the Celtics to OKC for Westbrook is a lie.
Starting point is 00:45:45 That's true. He did not make it to the final four two times while Kentucky. Finally. He was there before Califari. Oh, yeah, yeah, okay. It was before Calipari when they used to get there all the time. I see what you're saying, Goulay. LeBron James petitioned to enter the NBA without finishing high school.
Starting point is 00:46:09 He went to high school with Agent Rich Paul. He wore number six in Miami in honor of his two sons, one born on October 6, the other one born in June. I thought I knew everything about LeBron, and one of these is a lie. One of these is a lie. Two Truths and a Lie. NBA Finals Edition. Here's the lie.
Starting point is 00:46:38 He went to high school with Maverick Carter. I think he met Rich Paul later, so I think went to high school with Agent Rich Paul, who I know is a lie. That is a lie. He met Rich Paul at an Akron airport and started talking to him because he liked his throwback Warren Moon jersey. He had a throwbook, Warren Moon, Jersey throwback? Did he really? Yes.
Starting point is 00:46:59 How many did I get right? Not a lot. I think you got LeBron rights and you got Anthony Davis rights. Oh, no, you got three right because you got Tyler Hero right as well. What did I get Tyler Hero right? That he was not Homecoming King and Prom King. Oh, that's right. And what did I get Anthony Davis right?
Starting point is 00:47:16 That he did not play baseball until his gross spurt. He actually, the funny thing about his growth spurt, I think I read this in Sports Illustrated at one point. may have been, that he was a guard early in basketball because he was small and then he had a gross spurt and he can still dribble the ball. Yeah, that makes sense. So when you're dribbling during the growth spurt, it's fine. Gross spurts are crazy to me. I had, I was, I have my license.
Starting point is 00:47:39 I did at one point. I was 5-7, my junior year in high school. And then I was over the summer, I'm 6-2 now. I grew to 6-2, junior to senior year in high school. I remember showing up and my basketball coach, Jim Kahn, was like, oh, I got a player now. I was this mealy, skinny, five, seven and a half, and all of a sudden I was six two. I think I've been the same height since ninth grade. Well, girls stopped growing faster.
Starting point is 00:48:07 Sooner, excuse me. My younger brother, well, my older brother grew two inches in college. And my younger brother was, I don't know, maybe five, four until his junior year of high school. And now he's six four. Isn't that crazy? It is. It's wild. Just, I mean, what?
Starting point is 00:48:22 So I don't even know the answer. Why would that be? Is it your nutrition gets better or? No, I just think men, boys grow longer, like later in their years than women do. Our growth stops earlier. It's crazy. That's why younger girls in, like, middle school, are so much bigger than the boys sometimes. Like, they look older.
Starting point is 00:48:40 And you were this tall when? I mean, maybe ninth grade. I don't know. I'm not very tall, so it ended pretty quickly for me. Okay. Nothing wrong with that. All right. Final hour.
Starting point is 00:48:50 I get Dave Wonstat, who is. Got more stories than anybody in the NFL. Chris Bosch, one of the all-time great guys, two-time NBA champ, both joining us coming up. Either way, the podcast's Superhuman documented it all, embedded in the games and with the athletes for a full year. Within probably 10 days, I'd put on 10 pounds.
