Starting point is 00:00:00 This is an I-Heart podcast. Guaranteed Human. Another podcast from some SNL, late-night comedy guy, not quite. Unhumor me with Robert Smygel and friends. Me and hilarious guests from Bob Odenkirk to David Letterman help make you funnier. This week, my guest, SNL's Mikey Day and head writer, Streeter Seidel, help an a cappella band with their between songs banter.
Starting point is 00:00:23 Where does your group perform? We do some retirement homes. Those people are starving for banter. Listen to humor me with Robert Smigel and friends on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Imagine an Olympics where doping is not only legal but encouraged. It's the enhanced games. Some call it grotesque. Others say it's unleashing human potential. Either way, the podcast's superhuman documented it all, embedded in the games and with the athletes for a full year.
Starting point is 00:00:52 Within probably 10 days, I'd put on 10 pounds. I was having trouble stopping the muscle growth. Listen to Superhuman on the IHard Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Hey, what's good, y'all? You're listening to Learn the Hard Way with your favorite therapist and host, Kear Games. This space is about black men's experiences, having honest conversations that it's really not safe to have anywhere, but you're having them with a licensed professional who knows what he's doing. How many men carry a suit or armor it? It signals to the world that you're not to be played with. And just because you have the capability that does not mean that you need to.
Starting point is 00:01:29 Listen and learn the hard way on the IHard radio app, Apple Podcast, or wherever you get your podcast. Thanks for listening to The HARD podcast. Be sure to catch us live every weekday on Fox Sports Radio in noon to 3 Eastern, 9 a.m. to noon Pacific. Find your local station for the herd at Fox SportsRedio.com or stream us live every day on the IHart Radio app by searching Fox Sports Radio or FSR. You're listening to Fox Sports Radio. Here we go. Our number two.
Starting point is 00:02:06 Live in Los Angeles, it's the herd. Wherever you may be, however you may be listening. Thanks for making us part of your day. Really appreciate it. Really, really appreciate it. Nick Wright, five minutes. Jamak. So we get into this discussion.
Starting point is 00:02:26 yesterday about the value of just if you got the coach quarterback right, everything else is mostly replaceable. You don't want to be terrible at left tackle or have no pass rush. But, I mean, the three best corners in the NFL last year didn't make the playoffs. So even valuable positions just don't matter much. Outside of quarterbacks and occasional weapons like a Travis Kelsey, almost no player in the NFL is worth even a point in a point spread. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:02:55 So I went back this morning and I looked at the five biggest dynasties in the NFL. I went back to the Packers with Lombardi and Bart Star, Niners, Montana Walsh, Steelers, Noel Bradshaw, Patriots, Belichick, Brady. And Kansas City, I think, needs another championship to be a dynasty. But let's give it to him because I think we do think they're, they've separated from the league. Reed Mahomes. Those teams, Kansas City last year, it was Christian. Jones and a bunch of kids playing defense, these teams had holes in them. But if you have a Hall of Fame coach and a really high-end star Hall of Fame quarterback,
Starting point is 00:03:36 that's about 80% of this league. You can't have a dynasty without it. By the way, even a duo that never kind of disappointed us, Marino and Shula, and we're like, where are the Super Bowls? They still got together. Shula was older. They got to seven playoffs. even ones that don't quite qualify, Cowboys needed another Jimmy Johnson, Troy Aikman.
Starting point is 00:04:03 Those are close. So, like, that's what you have to be good at. And I said to myself, this morning I went and looked at the best coach quarterback duos, where I consider the coach is going to be a Hall of Famer or certainly vie for it and the quarterback is. So the first five are easy. The first five are pretty easy. Mahomes and Andy Reid's number one, not particularly close. Certainly an argument with Montana and Walsh as the best quarterback coach combo in the history of the sport.
Starting point is 00:04:36 Number two, again, I know they're off a bad year, but McVeigh is the youngest coach to win Super Bowls and Stafford. Stafford, by the way, in the year he won a Super Bowl a year ago, threw for $5,000. yards. Number three, Sean Peyton and Russell Wilson. We don't believe Russ is washed. Payton is brilliant. Number four, I'd go Doug Peterson and Trevor Lawrence. I think Peterson is one of the most underrated coaches in the last decade in the sport. Out-duled, outsmarted, out-fox, Billa-Cechek, and a Super Bowl. We all love Trevor Lawrence. And the number five, I know a lot of people have misgivings about Lamar Jackson, but I put Harbaugh, I think it's a remarkable coach. Lamar win 75% of his starts. I know you don't trust him. Peyton Manning took a while to get the ring and have great
Starting point is 00:05:22 playoff success. Lamar Jackson's really good. When he's healthy, he's really good. So then, then I started looking around. And I found nine to fill out the top ten. I found nine teams where I really like the quarterback, Jets, Chargers. I still got questions about the coach. I found 10 teams where I love the coach, but I'm not sure at quarterback, San Francisco, Carolina, New York Giants. And then eight, I didn't trust either. Eight, a quarter of the league, I don't trust the quarterback. I don't trust the coach. That's no man's land.
Starting point is 00:05:55 Nine, quarterback's a star. You know, Justin Herbert, Aaron Rogers. Coach could be good. I got to wait and see. And then 10, the coach is great. You're Pete Carroll, you Kyle Shanahan's. I think Frank Reich's fantastic. I don't know.
Starting point is 00:06:10 I don't think Gino's going to be that good this year, as good. Okay? So then I tried to, so I go to my next follow. And here's six through 10. Tell me if I'm crazy on this. Six through 10. Put it up. So number six, don't tell me yet Zach Taylor should be in the same class as Andy Reed and Sean Payton.
Starting point is 00:06:33 First two years without Burrow, he was like, you know, was winning five games a year. I like him. Give me another year at least. Okay, go to the next one. Number seven. Now, I know you're all saying this is low, Philadelphia. So Nick Sariani got the job. They were a mess early.
Starting point is 00:06:51 And then he gave play calling to Shane Steichen. From that point in the Super Bowl, they were fantastic. Shane Steichen just left. Coordinators matter. Kyle Shanahan, great example. I think they'll be fine. That's why I put him at seven. We don't know if Soriani is a great coach.
Starting point is 00:07:12 When he had more control of the offense, and wasn't very good. Let's go to eight. I may bang on Sean McDermott, but Allen's a transformational talent. McDermott, the Buffalo Bills before Sean McDermott got there were kind of a mess. Number nine, I consider them both B to B plus, but Dak Prescott and Mike McCarthy,
Starting point is 00:07:34 he's got a Super Bowl. Dak is more than sufficient as a franchise quarterback. And then number 10, again, I think the coach is brilliant. unproven, young, but brilliant, and the quarterback's good when healthy, I'd go Mike McDaniel and Tua. So there's my top 10. Coach quarterback.
Starting point is 00:07:54 And you know, I love Mike Vrable. Out on Tanna Hill. Mike Tomlin's good. I don't know enough about Kenny Pickett. Robert Sala. Come on. He's on the hot seat.
Starting point is 00:08:07 Got to win this year. J. Mack, you look over it. Any issues? Hmm. Where's Kevin O'Connell and Kirk Cousins? That was number 11. Okay, just to make it sure. So Sala and Rogers were 12.
Starting point is 00:08:21 I'm not going to get into numbers, but I will tell you, we had a discussion about Kirk Cousins and O'Connell, but O'Connell's only coach one year. I thought they made a significant leap with him, but it's one year. O'Connell's a McVeigh guy. Yeah, I don't have a lot of beef with this. This is a strong list from you. A rare strong list for you.
Starting point is 00:08:37 First thing's first. He's the star. Nick Wright, joining us live. Yeah. Okay, so... Colin? Yeah. No, I know.
Starting point is 00:08:49 You don't... No, no, no. You can't put that out there and then just... We have to... You just gave your 10 Best American Cities and you had Fairbanks, Alaska, Bittenville, Arkansas, 2, and 3. Like, huh?
Starting point is 00:09:02 Like, wait a second here. First of all, did Brandon Staley defraud a family member of yours or something? His quarterback is Justin Herbert. Yeah. A guy who I think you picked... to win the division last year, and you don't even have it in the top 10, sounds like you don't have it in the top 12, so you really don't like that coach.
Starting point is 00:09:22 But there is, Matt Stafford being number two on this, McVeigh's a really good coach. Is he the second best coach in football? Maybe, I would say, closer to five than to two, but he would have to be the second greatest coach ever. For a him, Stafford combo with Stafford in his mid-late 30s coming off of, injury to be number two and we all love Sean Payton but it's Russell Wilson and Sean Payton are number three on your list give me a come on man that's what that's
Starting point is 00:09:56 bad that's a bad list I is not even there's just a bad list this is outrageous I'm just rightous is exactly what I thought I can say 10 things in America that are outrageous today Matt Stafford being on a list is not one of them he's 5,000 yards. This will be the most outrageous things said in America today. This list. No chance. No, no chance.
Starting point is 00:10:23 Does Peterson and Trevor Lawrence have to be number two? John Harbour and Lamar Jackson have to be higher. And Staley and Herbert have to be on the list somewhere. They got to be on there somewhere. Trevor Lawrence is so young I wouldn't let him babysit my children. He's a kid. He's like barely a teenager. He can't put him on a list above Russell.
Starting point is 00:10:43 and anyway. Russell, but Colin, I thought you had gotten over the Russell Wilson infatuation. It turns out just a fresh coat of paint in the flavor of a new quarterback, and you're all the way back. You're just all the way back. But go ahead. Sorry, I hijacked your show, but I just couldn't believe what I was seeing. Well, maybe it's the power of Sierra.
Starting point is 00:11:04 I don't know. I just think Russell, I'm going to give him one more year. I'm going to give him one more. You didn't see Sierra at a party once, and you claimed she glanced at you. And ever since then, it's just your analysis, it's been haywire. So I said about Dame is that there's this feeling, and maybe it's because Miami was in the finals, we love Spolster, we love Jimmy Butler. That's the fit for Dame.
Starting point is 00:11:25 But if you go back to the last 10 championships, Dame would be 33 next year, Butler 34. There is no champion where both your stars are in their 30s. Janus would be 28. Dame aging fast because a small athlete's had injuries would be 33. be 34. And they could also give Portland what they haven't had forever, a viable forward, Chris Middleton, who can hit a basket, is that we believe that Miami's wonderful. They just give Portland another guard. They've got a surplus of guards. They don't need Tyler Hero. I think Milwaukee's a better trade partner. What say you? Oh, I think, listen, I think that's a great point.
Starting point is 00:12:05 that for Dane, like, what team could add Dame realistically and be the most formidable? Yes, Milwaukee. Milwaukee might be the best team with respect to Denver. Denver gets to, you know, they're the champion and they are the deserved favorites in Vegas. But if someone said, I'm picking the bucks as is bringing Middleton back to win the title, no next year, no one's going to say that's crazy. Like, we know how great that team can be when they're fully healthy. and it would be an upgrade going from Middleton to Dame.
Starting point is 00:12:40 I don't think that trade makes any sense, though, for Portland, not because of the positional fit, you're right they could use a reliable forward, but because of the age. If I'm Portland, why do I want aging Chris Middleton as opposed to the young pieces Miami can give and probably better draft picks down the road because Butler and Dame are older, those Milwaukee picks are always going to be limited in their value because of Janus's age. So that cuts against it. The other thing that cuts against it is
Starting point is 00:13:13 I don't think Portland is going to ship Dame somewhere he absolutely doesn't want to go. And I think Dame, it's not only because Miami's Miami, and with respect, I'm a Midwestern guy, but Milwaukee's Milwaukee. It's also, I think Dame wants to be, at least arguably, the best player anywhere he goes. Now, I think Jimmy Butler is a more valuable playoff performer. I think that's been proven, but Dame's a hell of a playoff performer. Has two of the only buzzer beaters to win series and NBA playoff history. He's an excellent player, but that would at least be an argument. Who's the best player on the team, Dame or Jimmy? If you team up with Janus, you are clearly a number two. So I agree with you from a basketball standpoint. That would be a great fit, just like Philly
Starting point is 00:14:00 would be a great fit for Dame alongside Embed. I just don't think that is, if they do finally pull the trigger, a place they're going to send him. But I agree from that perspective, they'd be the instant favor. So I saw a piece of video made the rounds, and it's kind of embarrassing that it gained any oxygen. Victor Wembe Nyamo was shooting jumpers, couldn't hit me,
Starting point is 00:14:21 and I'm like, guys, he's, come on, this is silly. But I do think he'll get pushed around. He'll be a target. He won't be surrounded by much. You'll be able to collapse on him. I mean, he'll be the target every night. Stop Victor. Popovich is old school.
Starting point is 00:14:37 Pretty demanding. A lot of pressure. I still think 21 and 10, 21 and 7 feels realistic. What do you think is realistic for Victor, Wemby? So, listen, I said on the show that I think he'll average 19 points, 8 rebounds, lead the league in blocks. and I was told I'm being far too pessimistic that I don't believe in him enough. I said yesterday that I think he will be
Starting point is 00:15:07 an above average number one overall pick who is as a better career than Anthony Davis and make the Hall of Fame and I am on the furthest negative end on the Wimby discourse, which speaks to me that the Wimby discourse has gotten a little insane. And the reason why,
Starting point is 00:15:27 I thought the footage of him missing those jump shots is noteworthy, is only in this regard. I think the average fan, because of the highlights they've seen of the stepbacks and the one-footed threes, thinks this guy is a, like we're showing right now, a pure jump shooter. And he does have a pure looking shot, and he is a very good free-throw shooter, which makes you believe he one day could be. But last year in France, he shot 28% from 3%. This year in France, he shot 27% from three. I say all that to say, I think he is a big work in progress offensively.
Starting point is 00:16:09 And when we talk about the rookies that have stepped into the league and been instantly in the conversation for the best player in the league, it's a short list. But what they all have in common is they were multi-year college players. Duncan played four years. Kareem played four years. Bird played four years. Magic, I guess, is the outlier. But magic, despite the great finals game,
Starting point is 00:16:34 was not the best player in the league. He wasn't the best player on his own team in 1980. LeBron was unbelievable as a rookie, and average 21, 6, and 6. The idea that Wimby's going to come in and just take over, I think it's unfair to him. And I think that if this kid ends, you know, 10 years into his career,
Starting point is 00:16:55 has one MVP and one championship. And folks consider that a disappointment. That means we're setting the young man up to fail. And I don't think that's fair to him. So I went back to Des Bryant, Stefan Diggs in Minnesota and Buffalo, and Antonio Brown. And I would consider them.
Starting point is 00:17:14 I did not count OBJ because I don't consider him high maintenance. He was fine at LSU. I'm sorry. He was fine early in New York. He was fine in Cleveland. He was fine in L.A. I don't consider him a diva. I think in New York, I went a little sideways.
Starting point is 00:17:27 He became a rock star. New York's done that to a lot of young athletes. Jeremy Shockey. I could name multiple players. So I don't consider OBJ high maintenance. I just think he, I wish he was healthier. But I took Antonio Brown indisputable, Stefan Diggs now second place indisputable, and Des Bryant.
Starting point is 00:17:42 And in all of them, they were easily in the last two years in Dallas, last two years in Pittsburgh, last two years in Minnesota, and last year, last two years in Buffalo. overwhelmingly the number one target and yet complained they weren't getting the ball. Is it possible, Nick, we've all had somebody like this in our life. They're high maintenance. We've had somebody in our life that keeps asking and asking and you try to please and please. And they're never happy.
Starting point is 00:18:12 And this could unravel the bills. Oh, yeah, of course it's possible. I, the, yeah, I mean, the Diggs thing. is super concerning. Not just because the head coach said, and I quote, it's very concerning, very concerning, and then oddly, end quote. And then oddly, the next day said, why are you guys making a big deal out of it? By the way, practice tomorrow's canceled. The whole thing was weird, but the other reason it's weird is this, Colin. He has been the most targeted wide receiver in the league or in the top two over the last couple years, and he just got a new
Starting point is 00:18:54 So if it's not targets and it's not money, how do you fix it? And that to me is for a Buffalo team that everybody thinks that, you know what I mean? Oh, Nick Wright just hates the bills. Why would I hate the bills? I have no reason to hate the bills. You know what I hate, Colin? Unfairness and sports media. That's what I hate.
Starting point is 00:19:15 And this Bills team, having been crowned this multiple-time Super Bowl champion with having done nothing bothers me. And if we were being fair and honest, we would say this team is on a very clear trajectory. And it's in the wrong direction. In 2020, they made the AFC title game. Their quarterback finished second in MVP voting. In 2021, their quarterback had a rough start to the season. Then a brilliant finish to the season.
Starting point is 00:19:47 They lost in round two in heartbreaking fashion. In 2022, their quarterback's final two months. of the year were the worst two months he had had in three years and they lost in round two in blowout fashion at home. That is going backwards down the stairs and now heading into 2023 you have Leslie Frazier walk away kind of under odd circumstances. I'm not retiring but I'm taking a year off. You have the head coach taking on more responsibility as he's now going to be the de-coordinator
Starting point is 00:20:19 and you have Diggs and Allen, your two most talented players. by far on the roster that are healthy, because Von Miller's there, at odds with each other. And you add to it, they gave Von Miller at 33 years old coming off an injury, six years, $120 million, knowing that contract wouldn't age well because they were trying to win immediately. And his first year there, he blows out his knee and now we'll see what he's like in year two, and then that instantly becomes a bad contract. and oh yeah, by the way, it might be the toughest division in football. There should be massive concerns about what's happening in Buffalo.
Starting point is 00:21:02 And some of us have been sounding them for quite some time. Yet we were called a skeptic and a hater and all these things have only been right about it. Hey, for the record, I said this morning, hard knocks, seven of the last 10 teams haven't made the playoffs. I said, prickly quarterback, impulsive owner, coach on the hot seat, brutal early schedule. trying to create some inertia. Don't love it for the Jets. What was your takeaway in Hard Knocks? Jets looks like inevitable.
Starting point is 00:21:30 Yeah, if I were the Jets, I wouldn't love it. No, of course not. I mean, I just don't see an upside to it. I see upsides. It's not often, but like with the Lions, there was an upside. They're a team that became somewhat of a fan favorite. Their coach, I think, added job security that was necessary. because America kind of fell in love with him,
Starting point is 00:21:54 and it was a team that no one was discussing that then became a part of positive conversation. The Jets, pardon me, once they had Aaron Rogers, were already going to be one of the most talked about teams in the league, and now you have the added scrutiny of it, and a head coach that I think is going to be under real duress, and I understand Hard Knocks ends before the year starts, but especially if the year doesn't start great.
Starting point is 00:22:21 And the Jets' final half dozen games are about as soft of a schedule as you can have. I believe the Jets could be 5 and 6 or 6 and 5 through 11 and still make the playoffs because of the end of the year. Yeah. The worry is if it starts 1 and 4 or 2 and 4 or 1 in 5, are they going to be able to handle those choppy waters? Because you're correct. those opening six weeks are all over national television against some of the best teams in the league that is that is not how if i were the jets i would want to start this aaron rogers miniature era nick right first things first uh dapper as always good arguments didn't like my list but we don't
Starting point is 00:23:09 agree on stuff all the time so that's a terrible list america i challenge you find something more outrageous set on television any network today you won't i mean give me a break number two Sean McVey and Matt Stafford. Okay, no problem. See you. All right, buddy. See you. You weren't outraged by my list, were you? I think, so I think we tend to do this recency bias. I'm guilty of this all the time is whatever happened.
Starting point is 00:23:30 Like Denver, really, really good team. It did help that, you know, certain things, KD got hurt, Chris Paul. I mean, it was a weird year. Kauai is never there. I think Denver's really good. I don't think they're the Bird Celtics or the Magic Lakers. I don't think they're the Duncan Spurs, although I do think they have some similarities with that Duncan team.
Starting point is 00:23:51 But I think Matt Stafford, we forget how good he was in the biggest games going and out-duling Brady on the road in the playoffs, out-dueling Joe Burrow, and that doing it with OBJ getting hurt, O-line, very old, brand-new system. If you go look at the Brady-Stafford years, they were very similar. Very choppy early, or very choppy mid. Got a little bit of a scheduling break and health late, and they caught fire in one. I don't, nothing about the list was outrageous. I'll say if the, I tend to not get outraged, right? There's no value in just freaking out.
Starting point is 00:24:25 You know, listen, Kevin Durant starts talking to people on Twitter. Maybe I'll get a little outraged. But I will be outraged if the Jets get hard knocks. I'm going to be very ticked off because as we talked about, that schedule, Colin, to start the season is not favorable. It's just, I can see things spiraling badly for the Jets if, you know, Aaron Rogers has to face cameras all the time. Yeah, but we're not talking Mets meltdown.
Starting point is 00:24:45 We're just talking. Anything short of the playoffs is a meltdown, because the coach will be fired and the GM will probably be fired. If you look at their schedule today, and I said signed up, we don't have it on the screen, but if I said to you, look at the Jets schedule. If they can start three and three. You'd be okay.
Starting point is 00:24:58 I'll take it. I think four and two's in play, but two and four would be an unmitigated disaster. Okay, let's not go crazy. I think three and three. I'm going to say in their first six, they're four and two, that's my guess. I like the optimism.
Starting point is 00:25:09 Yeah, but I. Oh, here's the schedule. So Bill's win, Cowboys win, Patriots win, Chiefs loss. I think that Denver loss. Yeah, it's a tough game. And Eagles at home.
Starting point is 00:25:21 I'm going to say, I'm going to say they're actually going to beat Buffalo. Because I do think they're D-line and Buffalo's O-line. Yeah, they're small underdog in that one. Okay, but that's a, I love the fact they're coming in an underdog. And if you just look at the matchup in that game, Bill's O-line, Jets, D-line. That was why last year.
Starting point is 00:25:42 The Jets played them very tough twice last year, including one win. Okay, so I'll give you a W. They're better than Dallas. That's a W. Patriots are not good. They've owned the Jets, but that's been with a poo-poo platter of bad quarterbacks. I don't think they're – see, I think their real dilemma in the season, that it could be their only real losing streak. I think they're going to lose to Mahomes, lose it Denver, and lose to Philly. I mean, seriously, find me a tougher stretch where your quarterbacks face are. Josh Allen, Dak, Prescott, Mack Jones, Pat Mahomes, Russell Wilson, Jalen Hertz. So my takeaway is week four, five, and six, a three-game losing streak, but you get a buy.
Starting point is 00:26:12 You come out of the buy, it's really a double by. You come out of the by and face the Giants at home. That's not a double-bond. Come on, the Giants, Daniel Jones, against that pass rush. Come on, he, come on. Double-by. You know, call it a double-by. Chargers will be tough.
Starting point is 00:26:26 We know the Raiders are a disaster. It's actually at the end of the year, you got to go to Miami, which, you know, if two is upright, that's tough. There's a lot of Ws on that puppy. A lot of W. Falcons, Texans, I mean, that's obvious wins. Might be double-digit favorites in those two. All right, let's slow down. One more herd? The herd streams 24 hours a day, seven days a week within the IHeart radio app.
Starting point is 00:26:51 Search Herd to listen live or on demand whenever you'd like. Imagine an Olympics where doping is not only legal but encouraged. It's the enhanced games. Some call it grotesque. Others say it's unleashing human potential. Either way, the podcast's Superhuman documented it all, embedded in the games and with the athletes for a full year. Within probably 10 days, I'd put on 10 pounds.
Starting point is 00:27:16 I was having trouble stopping the muscle growth. Listen to Superhuman on the I-Hard Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. A win is a win. A win is a win. I don't care what you're saying. Yep, that's me, Cliver Taylor the 4th. You might have seen the skits, the reactions, my journey from basketball to college football, or my career in sports media. Well, somewhere along the way, this platform became bigger than I ever imagined.
Starting point is 00:27:42 And now I'm bringing all of that excitement to my brand new podcast, The Clifford Show. This is a place for raw, unfiltered conversations with some of your favorite athletes, creators, and voices that not only deserve to be heard, but celebrated. One week, I'll take you behind the scenes of the biggest moments in sports and entertainment. And the next, we'll talk about life, mental health, purpose, and even music. The Clifford Show isn't just a podcast. It's a space for honest conversations, stories that don't always get told, and for people who are chasing something bigger.
Starting point is 00:28:11 So if you've ever supported me or you're just chasing down a dream, this is right where you need to be. Listen to The Clifford show on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcast. And for more behind the scenes, follow at Clifford and at TikTok Podcast Network on TikTok. Do you remember when Diana Ross double-tap Little Kim's boobs at the VMAs? Or when Kanye said that George Bush didn't like black people. I know what you're thinking. What the hell does George Bush got to do with Little Kim?
Starting point is 00:28:39 Well, you can find out on the Look Back at it podcast. I'm Sam Jay and I'm Alex English. Each episode, we pick it here, unpack what went down, and try to make sense of how we survived it. Including a recent episode with Mark Lamont Hill waxing all about crack in the 80s. To be clear, 84 is big to me, not just because of crack. I'm down to talk about crack on day, but just so y'all know.
Starting point is 00:29:02 I mean, at this point, Mark, this is the second episode where we've discussed crack. So I'm starting to see that there's a through line. We also have AIDS on the table right now. Thank you for finishing that sentence. I don't think there's a more important year for black people. Really? Yeah.
Starting point is 00:29:18 For me, it's one of the most important years for black people in American history. Listen to look back at it on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. How do you own the day in sports? You make incredible plays. How do the rest of us own the day with Irish Spring? When the spring hits you, you're ready to own the day. Irish Spring. Check it out at your local read.
Starting point is 00:29:39 Taylor today. J. Mack with the news. No, no, no, no, no. Turn on the news. This is the Heard Line News. I'm going to continue to hammer away at my sleeper in the NFC. Derek Carr and the Saints. I love this matchup. Car gets a fresh start with the Saints after nine years with the Raiders, nine seasons, sorry. And Saints, you know, they really haven't been able to fill that QB hole left by Drew B. Carr definitely won't forget his Raiders experience taking a shot at them over the weekend.
Starting point is 00:30:09 I'm happy to be somewhere where we're in a stable organization that's been proven for years. I was very upset. I was mad. I spent nine years in a place. I would have said I don't even want the money just to play two more times in front of our fans. I didn't get that opportunity. Once they made my wife cry, that was pretty much over. It was time to move on.
Starting point is 00:30:32 Boy, waiters. I don't know if Fox, that makes me jealous. If I told my wife Fox will not let me. go on the air for my last two days. They're moving on. They found a new or younger quarterback. I wonder if my wife would cry. Or she'd say tough enough and get over. Well, the big deal, she knows me so she wouldn't care. She knows she'd be happy for me to take over your spot. I don't know if my wife, has my wife ever cried? I'm jealous. Derek Carr, boys. I'm trying. You make your guy's wife cry. He's old. He's going to get upset.
Starting point is 00:31:00 I mean, if Fox booted me, my wife wouldn't cry. She would just be like, cool, you get to be home more now with the thing. But let's be real. Josh McDaniel's experience with the It's not going good. We've heard the Garoppolo disaster, the DeVonte Adams. Here's my thing. He's a little what they call brusk. He's a little curt. He's a little harsh. You think he would have learned his lesson in Denver, remember? Some guys don't learn their lesson. We all have people in our lives. Does a tiger change his stripes? It's not easy.
Starting point is 00:31:28 You've got to work at it. Josh McDaniels basically turned down the colt said I'd take it. Then he pulled out. That alienated people. You know, he and Brady fought more than once. He went to Denver, got kind of arrogant, it failed. He basically walked in and said, oh, Jay Cutler's a franchise quarterback. I don't want this guy. He's not good. He allegedly showed him a film of all his mistakes. Cutler was like, what the hell? This is how I meet the coach. And then it was done. And he was like, I want Tebow. You know, sometimes it's like, it's a therapy thing, like a character flaw. Some people in their discussions, they're very conflict-driven. It's just how they battle.
Starting point is 00:32:03 It usually goes back to a dad or how you were raised. I think Josh tends to be very, kind of conflict-oriented in the way he approaches stuff. He's very bottom-line in Kurt. And that, you got a baby quarterbacks. You can't have two Hall of Fame quarterbacks. You can't have two Hall of Fame quarterbacks. You're a quarterback. I mean, Belichick did the opposite with Brady.
Starting point is 00:32:22 Well, and that's why Brady bolted. They did win a bunch of titles. Like, you know. I just think his delivery system is poor. Because I keep seeing and reading Derek Carr upset. Jake Cutler upset. Brady's screaming at it. And by the way, Brady had all the rings so you can have that.
Starting point is 00:32:39 You can have that bumpy relationship because they've both got titles and rings. But it does feel like his delivery system's not great. It feels like they're going to be in the mix for a new head coach. Probably next February, January, February. We'll see. Next up, Brandon Cooks, now on his fifth team since 2014 after the Cowboys traded for him this offseason. Dallas, you know, already feeling the impact of adding a well-travel vet like Cook's. O.C. Brian Schottenheimer, speaking to what he's brought to the team so far.
Starting point is 00:33:06 Here's a guy that's been there, done that. And what Brandon wants to do, although come and learn a system, is he wants to encourage and invest in the younger guys. And so those guys spend a lot of time together. I see him before practice in the weight room working together. So what Brandon brings us is way more than just speed. And absolutely, it's really fun to watch him run, whether it's deep routes, short routes, it really doesn't matter. But what I love is the competitor and the way he is encouraging that entire room of receivers. It's been awesome.
Starting point is 00:33:37 Brian's bounced around the league. I don't know. Your optimism today is rubbing off on me. I'm not going to say anything bad about his tenure with the Jets. Maybe we'll get Sanchez in here. Yeah, I mean, what was it like? As a fan? Yeah.
Starting point is 00:33:49 It's awful. Why? He's so conservative. No creativity in the offense. Yeah. That was my knock on... But that's what McCarthy wants. They want to run the football.
Starting point is 00:33:59 No Zee. That's what he wants. Pallored off an injury. Kellen Moore wants to throw, which is the modern game. McCarthy, defense, running. So basically McCarthy went and found somebody that agrees with him. Oh, yeah, now you're putting it together. And the defense, they load it up on.
Starting point is 00:34:13 Like, defenses don't win you titles now. That's so obvious. They're seeing it backwards, but hey, more power to the Cowboys. Final story. Oh, geez. So listen, Dennis Rodman was a good player back in his day. Great rebounders, spurs, bowls, pistons. Very, very good.
Starting point is 00:34:29 For some reason, he decided to chime in on Larry Bird, Larry Legend. In a recent interview, Rodman spoke to how he believes Larry Bird would perform in today's NBA. Here's what The Worm had to say. If Larry Bird playing this era, I think he'd be in Europe. His game was fit for Boston at that time. Today's world, oh, hell no, there's no way. I'm not just downplaying him because he's a great player at that time, just like I was. But I'm saying, no.
Starting point is 00:35:01 That's no way. I think the kids from Denver is way better here. When has Rodman ever been thoughtful or somebody we leaned on for precision? Who cares? Larry Bird would not make today's NBA. He's actually, I've made the argument. He would be better in this area. Yeah, I've made the argument that there's no player in my life who was born too early than Larry Bird.
Starting point is 00:35:30 He would be the best shooter in the league after Steph Curry. And he's six-nine. And he's creative. And, I mean, just spacing, passing, ball handling. Bird would be a dominant player today. Dominant. You could argue in the era where you could get along with grabbing and chucking. Because Bird often had guys defending him that were bigger.
Starting point is 00:35:50 They could grab him. They could use a forearm. They could tackle him. It hurt his career. He kind of fell apart. Bird was unbelievable. There was a story out there. I think it was against your trailblazers where Bird came out and said,
Starting point is 00:36:00 I'm going to score tonight with my left hand and had like 13 baskets shooting lefty. And he had like three baskets, included the game winner righty. And they asked him after all, why'd you shoot lefty? He said, I'm saving my right arm for the next game against the Lakers in which he went off for like 40 points. And they dominated. Listen, Larry Byrd is a legend. This stuff is nonsense. Rodman would have a trouble today.
Starting point is 00:36:20 He would have no position. Like, there is no position of go get rebounds in the NBA. And you say, oh, he's Draymond. No, no, no. Dremon's much smarter. Dremon a better passer. Dremont, I mean, Dremon is on that Warriors team after step has been the catalyst for years. You see how they sagged off Sabonis in the series?
Starting point is 00:36:36 They gave him any shot that he wanted. That's what they would do to dinner. Draymond can hit a three. Draymond will shoot a three and hit a three. He can. Hey, by the way, not sports news, but kind of interesting. You and I, I brought this up last week. Would you have wanted the Wheel of Fortune job?
Starting point is 00:36:49 Pat Sejax leaving. No, not my wheel out. And you said not really your... I said that would be amazing. That'd be so fun. Well, they just announced the replacement for Pat Seajack, and it is the immortal Ryan Seacrest, who's an immensely talented dude.
Starting point is 00:37:00 And someone put this together. So he has now replaced Regis Philbin on that morning show. Casey Kasem on the radio, Dick Clark on the rocking New Year's Eve thing, and now Pat Sejack. That's a pretty incredible run here. Also, it should be noted, he's inoffensive. He didn't really have like a strong point of view in a world where everybody does. He's inoffensive, good on television, plays well with others.
Starting point is 00:37:26 I think it's a great choice. He's like an ideal neighbor who you'd want, like living next door to you. They're thoughtful. They see, you know, you left your car door up and they'll close it. You know, he just seems like a nice dude willing to do the right thing. Yeah. And innovate, in a world where everybody is a joke. Well, a lot of people are true.
Starting point is 00:37:41 I mean, like, I don't even know. Is he even on social media? Probably just, you know, the standard stuff. He's not going on. They're getting outraged, calling people names like Kevin Durant. That's my new, bro. I'm going to do that going forward. Inoffensive, no strong takes.
Starting point is 00:37:53 I'm not sure how it'll work. Yeah. Good luck with that. Jay Mack with the news. Well, that's the news. And thanks for stopping by. The herd lie news. Say hello.

Starting point is 00:38:38 Pauly Fusco here with Tony Fusco. Yo, of course you know us as the host of the number one rated show in all the sports talk, the Pauley and Tony Fusco show. Yeah. Now the suits at Fox Sports Radio gave us this air time because they wanted us to tell you how great our
Starting point is 00:38:54 show is. Why? Yeah, instead of us doing that, let's just let our millions of fans do the talking. Yeah, play the tape. You don't know crap about sports. I mean, why am I even on this crap? Whoa, whoa, whoa. That's the wrong tape. Wrong tape.
Starting point is 00:39:08 Just forget that. Look, listen to the Pauli and Tony Fusco show on the IHot radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcast. Imagine an Olympics where doping is not only legal, but encouraged. It's the enhanced games. Some call it grotesque. Others say it's unleashing human potential. Either way, the podcast's Superhuman. documented it all, embedded in the games and with the athletes for a full year. Within probably 10 days, I'd put on 10 pounds.
Starting point is 00:39:38 I was having trouble stopping the muscle growth. Listen to Superhuman on the I-Hard Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. A win is a win. A win is a win. I don't care which I'm saying. Yep, that's me, Cliver Taylor the 4th. Do you remember when Diana Ross double-tapped Little Kim's boobs at the VMAs? Or when Kanye said that George Bush didn't like black people. I know what you're thinking. What the hell does George Bush got to?
Starting point is 00:41:00 do a little kill. Well, you can find out on the Look Back at it podcast. I'm Sam J. And I'm Alex English. Each episode, we pick it here, unpack what went down, and try to make sense of how we survived it. Including a recent episode with Mark Lamont Hill, waxing all about crack in the 80s. To be clear, 84 is big to me, not just because of crack. I'm down to talk about crack on day, but yeah, yeah, literally.
Starting point is 00:41:23 But just so y'all know. I mean, at this point, Mark, this is the second episode where we've discussed crack. So I'm starting to see that there's a through line. We also have AIDS. on the table right now. Thank you for finishing that sentence. I don't think there's a more important year for black people. Really?
Starting point is 00:41:39 Yeah. For me, it's one of the most important years for black people in American history. Listen to look back at it on the IHeart radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Saturday is baseball night in America on Fox as the raise with the best record in the major leagues. Take on the Mariners. Or the Guardians take on the Cubs. The action begins at 7 Eastern on Fox. Check for the game in your area.
Starting point is 00:42:07 I put up my board earlier. We had this discussion about if you went to the five biggest dynasties in NFL history, and the chiefs aren't quite there yet, but if you start with Lombardi and Bart Starr, Chuck Null, Bradshaw, Walsh, Montana, Belichick, Brady, and we'll throw the current almost dynasty in, even near dynasties, Jimmy and Aikman, Mahomes, Reed, it's great coaches, great quarterbacks, not good, but great, right? And so we said to ourselves, okay, so that's the one thing. Don't have to have a great defense, don't have to have great this, that you got to have, you have an all-time coach and an all-time quarterback, that's the recipe. You'll never be
Starting point is 00:42:54 a dynasty going in. And so we went to the top 10 quarterback coaching combos. in the league. There's five that I think are really strong. Reed Mahomes, Stafford McVeigh, Peyton Russell, I think he'll bounce back. Trevor Lawrence and Doug Peterson, who I think is vastly underrated. I know a lot of people are questionable on Lamar and the injuries. If he gets injured this year, you're right, I'm wrong. I think he'll be healthier. I'll go Harbaal Lamar. I don't know yet if Zach Taylor's a great coach. He was on the hot seat in year three. Couldn't win games, and then Joe Burrow arrived. But I'd put them six. Siriani had an awful press conference and a really bad start, and then he handed play calling to Shane Steichen, and they took off for a year and a half.
Starting point is 00:43:38 Shane Steichen just left. So we don't know if Nick Seriani is a great coach. We know Jalen Hertz is ascending and becoming a great quarterback. McDermott, I think, is going backwards, but I would put him eight. I know everybody bangs on McCarthy. He's got a ring. And then I would put Mike McDaniel and Tua at 10. I guess the point being is, I don't think.
Starting point is 00:43:59 even by the second one, Stafford and McVeigh, people argue. I mean, think about that. 32 teams by the second choice. Now you say, what about Shanahan? We don't know what Brock Purdy is. What about Pete Carroll? Really think Gino's going to be the highest
Starting point is 00:44:14 rated quarterback passer rating next year? I mean, I like Frank Reich. I can like Tomlin. I like Vrabel. There's also, I like the quarterback. I don't know what Brandon Staley is. I mean, it was man overboard last year at the break. We don't know what they are.
Starting point is 00:44:27 Okay. Upon second. viewing, we haven't seen Russ and Peyton for one game together. Does three feel a little high? I think if you look at the history of the league, you get seven new playoff teams, we know they're both talented.
Starting point is 00:44:41 We also know, the reason I put them there, is because Hackett wasn't just struggling. He wasn't a head coach. I mean, he's probably a position coach. I'm not even sure he's a great coordinator because Aaron kind of does what Aaron wants to do. So they put a position coach
Starting point is 00:44:57 as a head coach. And first, game, it was man overboard. Like, oh, it was like the Freddie Kitchens thing. You're like, oh, this isn't going to work. Payton won games. Lots of them with Taysam Hill and Teddy Bridgewater. Yeah, yeah. We know he's a good coach.
Starting point is 00:45:11 A good coach. Stafford McVeigh. Had a great season together, won a Super Bowl. Yeah. And then last year went sideways, injuries. Stafford hurt O-Line a disaster. I think a lot of that. Whereas Trevor Lawrence, as a rookie suspect under Urban Meyer,
Starting point is 00:45:29 Trevor Lawrence second year, whew! I mean, rocket ship to them. You could make an argument. They should be ahead of number three. I have no problem with it. That was my order. I think after Mahalms Reed, it's all inches, not feet. Yes.
Starting point is 00:45:44 But I do think sex is more burrow than Zach Taylor. At this point, I think Zach's were a good coach. Well, I don't think anybody would disagree with that, right? Yeah, yeah, yeah. But I didn't have, I had Kirk Cousins and his young coach. I don't know how much time. Oh, we got a couple of minutes. McDermott's a defensive guy.
Starting point is 00:46:02 Most people attribute Allen's rise to Brian Dable. Last year, Alan, I know he put up good numbers, didn't quite make the leap to MVP. What do we make of the McDermott Allen thing? Because you know what the defensive coach is like, running in defense? Well, Pete Carroll, Sean McDermott, Mike Tomlin, I've watched their old lines for the last six years. Belichick's skill position.
Starting point is 00:46:27 I'm just, I like, but I mean, Pete struggled with O-lines. Now, they went and hit a couple home runs in the draft, but it still, for the record, is not a highly rated O-line if you go to PFF. I mean, how many years, Andy Reid in an off-season, four months solved the Chiefs O-line in a rebuild. Sean McVeigh, 30-year-old guy gets a job. They solve the offensive line in an off-season. Tomlin five years.
Starting point is 00:46:56 Can't figure it out. McDermott five years. Pete's last eight. Like the O-lines always an issue with Seattle until they went and got the left tackle out of wherever they go. Yeah, the young kid. It feels like the biggest takeaway here is the gap from one to everyone else is seismic.
Starting point is 00:47:11 Like we're talking about a Grand Canyon space here because number one is clear. It's obvious. And then, you know, some people have a case for two. And I don't know. I mean, McVeigh Stafford may only have one more year. There's already talk. Remember we saw we had the report.
Starting point is 00:47:25 Maybe McVeigh is trying to bring in Kirk Cousins or something. Peyton and Breeze would have been number two on that list. Yeah, and that's a tough sell. Yeah. So coming off Russ's worst year of his career. Yeah. So I think if you put Peyton and Breeze together, then it would be though the top two would be different than everybody else in the league.
Starting point is 00:47:42 Because for about six years, Peyton and Breeze were just automatic playoff. I mean, once Pete, once Breeze didn't have to be the highest paid guy and they restructured it and they could bring players in to help him, those guys were money. So I... And just to recap,
Starting point is 00:47:57 you have that Peyton Russ combo as a playoff team or no? Because at three, one would think you have them in the playoffs. I'm going back and forth on. Okay. A little waffling. Yeah, I mean, I have... You're like Dame Lillard, just sitting on the fence.
Starting point is 00:48:13 Do I want to go? Do I want to stay? No, I'm not. You're like Aaron Rogers and Green Bay. Do I want to go? Don't want to stay? No, I'm... Huh? This is only a unit for like a couple months. I'll have an answer definitively in three weeks. Okay. All right.
Starting point is 00:48:25 Because I'm going back Chargers Broncos, back. and fourth. Hour three around the corner on a Tuesday, next. Another podcast from some SNL late-night comedy guy, not quite.
