We get to ask other people questions because we're sick and tired of being asked questions. Well, sick and tired is a strong way to put it. But, you know, tired and sick. Tired and sick.
Starting point is 00:00:26 Listen to Hey Jonas on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you. you get your podcast. Just listen. We don't care where you hear it. Another podcast from some SNL late night comedy guy, not quite. Unhumor me with Robert Smygel and Friends. Me and hilarious guests from Bob Odenkirk to David Letterman
Starting point is 00:00:43 help make you funnier. This week, my guest, SNL's Mikey Day and head writer Streeter Seidel help an a cappella band with their between songs banter. Starting point is 00:01:49 Absolutely. A redacted amount of years later, we're still joined at the hip. Just a little bit bigger hips. This is a podcast. We're recording it as we tailgate our youth soccer games in the back of my Honda Odyssey. with all the snacks and drinks. Why did you get hard seltzer instead of beer? They hit a bogo.
Starting point is 00:02:05 Well, then you got it. Listen to soccer moms on the Iheart radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. What's up, fam? It's Isaiah Thomas. And I'm C.J. Toledano. It's our favorite time of the year on our podcast point game, the playoffs. We're digging into the biggest surprises of the season. And I'm looking back on some of my greatest playoff moments.
Starting point is 00:02:24 If we didn't talk ever again, I was hiring. You just understood. That's how personal it got. Wow. Then after that game seven, Mark keep coming to you. He's like, you know, I love you, dog. You know, it's all love. This was just playoffs.

Starting point is 00:03:02 You're listening to Fox Sports Radio. Here we go. Hour number two here on the herd. Gorgeous Wednesday. Tons of news. College football, NFL, obviously. A little NBA action. It's me.
Starting point is 00:03:20 Jason McIntyre in for an under-the-weather coward. He did text me within the last hour. So there is proof of life that he's alive. He said he's expected back maniana. If not, you know, I'm just going to have to carry the show with the help of the great Rachel Nichols. And it's official Rachel and I will be at the Lakers game together. Not together. Tonight we'll be there. Rachel obviously has better connections than I do.
Starting point is 00:03:45 I get better seats. I'm getting on in a lot. Yeah, you better seats. You were at the paper clips against Sheigilded Alexander at OKC last night. How did that was that? Man, the Oklahoma City Thunder have not missed a step despite the fact they are missing their second best player. They're undefeated, and they don't even have J-Dub right now. So it looks like, you know, a lot of people after it took seven games to win the finals were like,
Starting point is 00:04:08 eh, I don't know, it's wide open again next year. I don't know, man, they're young players, they have experienced now. And they, Shea said at the beginning of the season, we're only going to be better this season, and he's right. So far away. How was the free throw merchant? What did he do last year? I'm just kidding. Okay, some fans are.
Starting point is 00:04:23 Man. They don't love me, but, yes, you guys are dominant, undefeated. I will apologize, you know, when it's. due time. All right, coming up in five minutes, I guess Joe Clatt will be here. Very excited. Fun fact, I've never sat and just had a one-on-one with Clat for a while because, you know, it's what Cowher does.
Starting point is 00:04:40 And I'm very excited to talk to a lot of tough, hard-hitting questions about my Jets. But real quick, briefly, I wanted to talk about what did not happen at the trade deadline yesterday. And I think Colin might have started this like, I don't know, six weeks ago, should the Eagles trade A.J. Brown? And, you know, I was here snickering like, bro, what are you talking about? and then things were kind of wobbly. And I started to think, well, maybe there's a world where they trade him.
Starting point is 00:05:03 Anyways, the Eagles do not trade him, which was smart, obviously. He's a stud. He's a top 10 receiver in the league. You need him to beat man coverage. We know Jalen Hertz has kind of struggled against the zone with only one option. I thought it was a good move. But if you look around the league, interestingly, the best teams, nothing. You guys see what the Buffalo Bills did yesterday?
Starting point is 00:05:27 Nothing. They didn't listen to the outside noise. Unlike Jerry Jones, who basically is listening to TikTok. I mean, he's like the elected officials in this country. What's going on online? I've got to react to it. Like, that's what Jerry Jones is doing. The smart people, Howie Roseman, Buffalo Bills.
Starting point is 00:05:43 By the way, did the Lions do much yesterday? They're one of the favorites. Did the Green Bay Packers after losing Tucker Crafter, Tucker Kraft, the tight end? How about the Kansas City Chiefs? Did they do anything? Nope. Listen closely to what Howie Roseman said about the Eagles standing pass. When you're trying to be a great team, it's hard to trade great players.
Starting point is 00:06:02 And AJ Brown's a great player. He wears the sea for a reason. He's an important part of this team, of this organization. He cares about winning. He cares about his teammates. And I think that when you're a team like ours that is looking forward to an opportunity to compete for a championship, you just don't get rid of the guys like that. And so I feel very lucky to have him on our team.
Starting point is 00:06:27 excited about the second half of the season with him. Very well said. I love it. Howie Roseman just keeps winning. And I'll just wrap up with a fun stat from the staff this morning. You know who's made 10 trades in the last eight and a half months? The Jacksonville Jaguars. The jets are making moves.
Starting point is 00:06:45 Not a great sign. So smart teams do nothing, right? And the bad desperate teams, the Colts, the Cowboys, they're reaching and grasping at Strauss. All right, let's bring on Joel Clatt, the voice of college football. ball, the former legendary quarterback at Colorado. Oh, legendary. Wow. I want to go over his. Oh, man, they put a little tower up here.
Starting point is 00:07:05 Last time I was up here, I was so low. Hi, Rachel. You know, some of us are only 5'3 and need a little. You need a little boost. That's exactly right. What's going on, man? How are you? It's so good to have you here. Former college baseball star. Can we? Never played in college. I played minor league ball. Minor league baseball. Right after high school, yeah. Didn't go that well. Yeah, well, hey, you know, it's tough out there. It is.
Starting point is 00:07:28 It is. Joel's calling Indiana Penn State. I tried to talk Chris Felica into maybe taking the points with the Nittany Lions. Any chance of that? I mean, I'm not going to get into the points on the game that I'm calling. I will say, like, Indiana is as good of a team as there is in the country. They're complete.
Starting point is 00:07:45 What I love is talking with opposing coaches, and you get an idea of the weaknesses for the other teams, even more so than just watching the film yourself. And what's fascinating to me over the last couple of things, of years is that when I talk with anybody that has either played Indiana or is about to play Indiana, they all say the same thing, which is this is the best coach team that we have played. And it's one of the reasons why I think Indiana was so aggressive locking up Kurt Signetti as the job opening started to fly around the country. They are incredibly well coached. They've got a Heisman caliber
Starting point is 00:08:17 quarterback. They run the football as well as anybody in the country. In fact, I think they're second in the power four running the ball. Five times they've run up for over 300 yards. And their defense is top 10. So there's not a lot of holes with this Indiana team. I'm excited to cover them again as Penn State just tries to kind of keep themselves afloat. First game there since they fired James Franklin, so that'll be an interesting environment. Should be half full stadium maybe? I don't know. Let's hope is a little more than that. Come on, Penn State faithful. So I want to ask, you know, I love talking to the announcers here at Fox because you guys meet with the coaches and players. Yeah. And so you've met with Mendoza, I would assume, multiple times. So as a Jets fan,
Starting point is 00:08:52 we now have a war chest of draft picks. And I was like Luke on Mendoza. And then I read this Wall Street Journal article about his LinkedIn page. He's graduating from the Haas School of Business at Cal. I mean, this guy's had internships at big time, like, real jobs. He's super intelligent. And I'm talking myself into Mendoza. I want to know what's he like when you meet him. We know what he's like on the field. I mean this in the most positive sense. Okay. But the first time I sat down with him, I was like, is this like, is this Kirk Cousins just come back. He is very similar to Kirk Cousins.
Starting point is 00:09:29 Very similar. And the way they approach, very smart. I will say like he can be a little robotic and then as the conversation went on, it got more fluid and better and better. But he's process oriented. He is an incredible player. He's very accurate
Starting point is 00:09:45 with the football. He's smart. And he's developed into what I think is going to be easily a top 10 pick. To me, it comes down to style. So if you're an organization, or a team in the National Football League that wants to major in short passing, efficiency, RPO style, run-pass option style offense. And there are those out there.
Starting point is 00:10:04 Think of Mike McDaniels at the Dolphins. There's others. Mendoza is going to be a great option for you. Whereas, like, Ty Simpson from Alabama is a little bit more push the ball down the field, a little bit better in the intermediate zones. Those two are going to be widely considered, maybe one and two. I think Lenora Sellers will get some action as one of the better quarterbacks as well, just because of skill set and traits.
Starting point is 00:10:28 But to me, if I was up there and selecting in the top five, the question would be Ty Simpson or Fernando Mendoza. I think that they're that good. So let me ask you, as a former quarterback, are you of the belief that, let's just use the Jets, hey, we see what Mendoza does really well? We want to draft him and then cater to his skills. 100%.
Starting point is 00:10:48 So I would agree with that. 100%. You've got to have the right fit or else it doesn't work. Yeah, Lamar Jackson is obviously the great example. example, hey, this guy can run, he can't do much else. We're just going to cater to his skills, and then he developed the other ones. It became a great passer. So when you see Mendoza,
Starting point is 00:11:02 6-5 big strapping guy, but you said the word process. I hear process, I think Brock Purdy. Now, Purdy's obviously much smaller. He would do really well in one of those offenses. Oh, Kyle Shanahan offensive. Yeah, I mean, everyone does well in a Kyle Shanahan offenses. But because he's so smart and accurate with the football
Starting point is 00:11:20 and on time with the football, anybody like a Sean Payton. I mean, obviously Sean's not driving the quarterback, but I'm just trying to give you an example of these styles of offenses that he would flourish in. He would do very well in those.
Starting point is 00:11:32 When you watch him play, one of the things that he does that's very subtle is that he's what I would call like on platform very quickly. Very quickly. So when he gets that ball and he takes out one punch step and then he's ready
Starting point is 00:11:46 and then he's got a very quick release and he's accurate with the ball and he knows what he's looking at. So from my standpoint, that's what's going to pay dividends for him in particular early in his career as an NFL quarterback is the fact that he can be on time and on target it doesn't take him a long time to throw it doesn't take them a long time to process information everything happens fast and when you're moving from the college level to the NFL level that i mean that's that's the single trait that can help you
Starting point is 00:12:11 succeed the earliest i did hear his brothers at indiana i don't yeah that's right what year is he he's a younger guy so he gets in like fernando goes out there he starts blowing people out and then his brother gets in the ball game and he's over running around on the sidelines. It's great. It's not a lot that Mendoza comes out. Before we get to Simpson, Indiana, Penn State, what are you hearing on the Penn State job? Because I'm not hearing good things at this point. Well, it's not that you're not hearing good things.
Starting point is 00:12:36 It's just that it's a tough process right now for everybody, whether it's Florida or LSU. And the reason is, is because the candidates that you would like have either got locked up already, like Kurt Signetti or Matt Ruhle at Nebraska got an extension. Dan Laining has come out and said unequivocally, I'm not leaving Oregon. Well, these are some of the main targets. Maybe not Matt Ruhl, but at least there was a tie to Penn State. So it leaves the pool of candidates is starting to minimize, even before you get into a real, like, full search towards the end of the year.
Starting point is 00:13:05 And yet, the timing of the calendar in college football is so broken that you've got to be ready to go in December. You've got to sign a high school class in the first week of December, and then be ready for the transfer portal, which is now in the month of January. So if you're not ready to go by then, like what happens? Where do you go if you're hiring a coach? So for example, let's just say one of these jobs, whether it's Penn State or LSU,
Starting point is 00:13:30 and they decide, you know what, Lane Kiffin is our guy. Lane has not gotten an extension or at least hasn't signed one at Old Miss yet. He has not come out and said, I'm not leaving Old Miss. So now Florida is going to target him. In fact, I know that they've already targeted him. And given Florida is talking about an offer. If it hasn't already hit his desk, it is to make him the second highest paid coach in college football.
Starting point is 00:13:51 That's going to be matched by LSU. I'm almost certain about that. If Penn State wanted to get in there, well, here's the problem. If Ole Miss goes to the playoff and they play into the second and the third round, Lane's still coaching at Ole Miss during the transfer portal window being open, so he doesn't even have an ability to build a roster. So that's what's broken about college football from a calendar perspective.
Starting point is 00:14:12 That's why I would look at guys like an Alex Golish at South Florida, who's done a heck of a job at South Florida. That could be a name that's popped up. I think Brian Hartline is a name, the assistant coach at Ohio State that's going to pop up. These guys that could potentially move before the transfer portal window and not be tied to a team that could be still playing in the middle of January. And anything on James Franklin before we get to the college football rankings?
Starting point is 00:14:36 I've heard that he's pretty close to Virginia Tech. He will definitely coach again and he will have success. The guy was not a bad football coach. I mean, he came up short in, the most difficult games out there, you know, namely like Michigan when they're in the top five, or Ohio State when they're in the top five. So he's going to go someplace, and he's going to make them a better program. James is a heck of a football coach, and I hope he gets back in, and I know that he will.
Starting point is 00:14:59 I spent two years of Virginia Tech. The Jim Druckenmiller era? Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah. I had a couple classes with those guys. I think Franklin... I can just see J-Mack just jumping up and down to Inter Sandman at Lane Stadium. There was some goofball football players in the back of the class, and I would kind of matriculate toward them because I was at the school paper.
Starting point is 00:15:17 Nobody cares about that. Anyways, let's get to the college football playoff rankings. Joel, I didn't see anything to get very upset about it. Yeah, no, I thought it was a pretty good ranking, to be honest with you. As solid of a first committee ranking as I've seen in the playoff era, going back to the four-team playoff, here's one of the things that I think helps the committee out is the expanded 12-team playoff. Because we have an understanding now just intuitively that, okay, this is going to play out.
Starting point is 00:15:42 BYU and Texas Tech are going to play this weekend. Iowa and Oregon are going to play this weekend. You know, A&M has to travel and they're going to be on the road at Missouri. A couple of things that stood out to me, though, just takeaways, major takeaways from the top 25. Number one is that this committee values the Big Ten much more so than the AP does. Like, for instance, the team with the biggest discrepancy between the two polls is actually Iowa. Iowa is ranked, if you will, just outside of the top 25 by the AP. at 26. Well, there are plus six at 20 for the committee. And I think rightly so. The AP has devalued
Starting point is 00:16:19 the middle of the Big Ten all year long. I'm not sure why. But you also have Michigan sitting there, USC sitting there, Washington sitting there. So now there's a path for a Big Ten team to be the fourth team. Like let's just say one of those teams can win out and be 10 and two. Then there's definitely a path. Another thing that stood out to me is Texas at 11. I thought that the committee was telling us if Texas goes nine and three, we're probably going to put them in. They're sitting on two losses now. But think about it now. Think about it.
Starting point is 00:16:51 They already have them above OU. Obviously, they beat OU. They have them above Utah. Utah has nothing on their schedule that would propel them above Texas. And there is no way the ACC is going to get valued over Texas. Because we already see that. You know, the highest ACC team is ranked 14 with Virginia. So here's Texas, and down the stretch, they've got to travel to Athens and play Georgia,
Starting point is 00:17:16 and then they're going to host Texas A&M, the number three team in the country and the number five team in the country. Well, if you value wins, one of those wins is going to keep them or even elevate them all the way inside of the top 10, which means I think that they could lose one of those games and still be included in the playoffs. Can they get them with losing both? No, no, eight and four, they're out because, oh, you could win out, then you could have one of those 10 and two big 10 teams. there's a host of other things. They're not winning at Georgia.
Starting point is 00:17:44 Come on. They might. Georgia is, do you remember Rick Riley, even though I'm not a huge fan of Rick, which is fine. I can't believe I just said that. He wrote an article way back in the day about Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson.
Starting point is 00:17:57 And how like Tiger was just, you know, watching him play golf was just like rigid and focused. And then watching Phil Mickelson play golf was like watching a drunk chase a balloon next to a cliff. He had this line. I don't know why it's always stuck with it. That's his line or yours? That was his line, his line.
Starting point is 00:18:12 And, you know, like, for Georgia, it kind of reminds me of that. Oh. Because it's like, why are you behind in all of these games? You know, every SEC game, it's like they're down. They have to create some great play. They're at the whim of a review. Like they were on that third down, catch, no catch against Florida. You know, like Florida's sitting there.
Starting point is 00:18:34 If they get the fourth and one, you know, they could salt the game away. And so I don't think that it's just a surefire. Oh, absolutely, Georgia's going to beat that Texas team because Texas is actually playing their best football right now. Well, it's interesting. They were handling Vanderbilt. Handling Vanderbilt. And then nearly choked it away. You're right.
Starting point is 00:18:53 They were spotty early during the season. So let me pivot to ask about Arch. I mean, he was pretty rotten early in the season. Dreadful. Okay, dreadful. I like your word better than mine. We tiptoe around because of his last name. but even those guys would probably appreciate honesty.
Starting point is 00:19:11 Arch was dreadful early in the year, and he's gotten better in the last couple of weeks. So he was good, but can he go to Georgia and perform like he did against Vandy? And then that A&M game, that's not a layup, even though they're at home. Where are you on Arch? Have you seen a major progression? Arch is a decent to average college football quarterback early in his career, and he's going to need at least 20 more starts to be even remotely ready for the national football.
Starting point is 00:19:41 A guy in year three, we can still say it's early in his career? Well, as far as number of starts, he's early in his career. You know, again, this position, the position of quarterback, there is no way you can replicate it. So I don't care if it's your third year in college or if it's your first year in college. The only thing that matters is number of games started. Okay? Now, can you be a little more comfortable? Sure, I guess.
Starting point is 00:20:04 but you can't replicate the position anywhere other than on the field live in games. And so as he's starting to develop, as he's starting to start more games, you're starting to see him get a little bit better. Now, we all thought he was going to come out and be gangbusters and be Trevor Lawrence right away or Bear Bachmeyer, the quarterback at BYU is 8 and O right now as a true freshman. And it didn't happen. It didn't happen. But here's what this position is all about is reps and experience.
Starting point is 00:20:32 If you take a look at, since the turn of the century, the quarterbacks that have actually won Super Bowls. So you take a look at the list of guys that have actually won Super Bowls. And I think we've talked about this on the show. And I'm sure you've been riveted over, you know, in the corner as I'm saying this to Colin. The average college career of all the guys that have won Super Bowls is around 30 to 34 starts in college football. You have to have a deep. level of experience before you get to the NFL. So here's my, everyone, fans out there, just let Arch play a couple of years. Again, he is 20 starts away from being remotely close
Starting point is 00:21:16 to an NFL level. Okay, so to that point, a quick aside to my guy, Ty Simpson at Alabama. I love what I've seen from him. You just said him and Mendoza top 10 picks. He's got like eight-star, nine-star. I would choose Mendoza because of that very specific thing. I just wanted to make sure that. Now, he's likely going to come out. He's going to be rated up there. But again, the experience factor would tend to, if you're just looking at history, favor a guy like Mendoza because he started more games.
Starting point is 00:21:43 Simpson sat behind a bunch of guys who were like, anyway. Cowherd's now texting me. He wants a question about USC. Of course he does. I was going to say we were about to get through one of these without USC. Well, your guy, Lincoln Riley, after the win over Nebraska was complaining, hey, we ended our game after midnight. We have to fly back in the middle of the night.
Starting point is 00:21:59 I can't stand when Philches complain about the schedule. Listen, listen, listen, coaches, all of you and all of you that do this. Do you like the money or not? Because that's what it is. You know, you all complain about not having enough money to pay your players now and the revenue share and all that. Like, we're paying $167 million and buyout money in college football. That revenue needs to come somewhere.
Starting point is 00:22:25 Guess where it comes from? Television. You know, like, deal with it. I don't know what to tell you. Like, I really, I despise. He might have been joking. I'm sure that he was. And Lincoln generally, I would say, is better about that than others. So if he was joking, you know, that's good.
Starting point is 00:22:43 He finished after midnight plenty of times in the Pac-12 when they were in Pac-12 after dark. Yeah. Listen, is travel and game kick times more difficult in college than it is in the NFL? Yeah. But we also don't split games up. So you're not on regional television in college football. on national television in college football. I thought that that win for USC was really important for them, winning on the road.
Starting point is 00:23:05 There's this old adage. I've always thought you lose big before you lose small, you lose small before you win small and you win small before you win big. And they're turning that corner from losing small, those one possession games a year ago, to now winning some of those games. And the way that they did it leaning into their run game, not having a great performance from their quarterback, Jane Miava, that's important for them. You know, if they just go out there and Miava throws for 400 and they win,
Starting point is 00:23:29 by a score. It's like, okay, did we really learn anything or grow as USC? No. But if you go out there and you win with defense after the injury, obviously to Dylan Riolo, which is a bummer for Nebraska, but they leaned into the run game. They got it done. Miaba was not good in that game and they still win. Now they're set up as a one-loss Big Ten team in conference, obviously, after losing to Notre Dame and Illinois, but one loss in conference, and they've got a chance to be 10-and-2. That's my next question. So I'm looking at the schedule. Northwestern, that's win this week versus Iowa. That'll be tough, but I think they win that. Very tough. And then the Oregon game. Is the Oregon game essentially the season for Lincoln Riley? If you win that,
Starting point is 00:24:08 you're going to the playoffs. I mean, yes, the way that the schedule lines up, but they still have to handle their business. And a team like Iowa is still their kryptonite. Iowa does not care at all. They will run it 52 times. They can't throw the football and they're going to play great defense. So, Mayava likely struggles again against Iowa, even if that game is at home. And they're going to have the win in a gritty, low-scoring fashion. So of all the games, I think Oregon is the biggest threat because it's Oregon and it's on the road. But the sneaky game, the sneaky tough one for USC is going to be that Iowa game. Remember, that Illinois game was kind of fluky at the end. They could have won that easily. And then Notre Dame, I believe, was a one-score game with like
Starting point is 00:24:47 seven minutes left. They definitely had their chances. They blew it on special teams. They failed in short yardage, didn't lean into the run game, and they couldn't stop the run. And Iowa, again, will run it 52 times. They will not care, and they will shrink the game down. My alma might only get the ball seven times in that game. Yeah, not ideal. I know the buyouts are everywhere. Is Lincoln Riley 100% safe?
Starting point is 00:25:10 Yeah, he's safe. Okay, that's what I think. I do think that this team, I think they finish at least nine and three that not only retains Riley, obviously, but it also retains their class. This is the number one recruiting class in all of college football. The trajectory for USC is actually very positive. Everyone gets so upset at Colin and I because they're like, stop talking about USC and I get it because Colin always brings it up.
Starting point is 00:25:33 But that program is on the correct trajectory. And like I said, go through that process, lose big, lose small, win small, win big. And they're on that train. Last one, we've got to talk about Lane Kiffin. I don't know. Are you close to him because he loves to talk to the media. He's getting combative. I know you said earlier hasn't ruled out anything.
Starting point is 00:25:52 He's not going to the NFL, right? This is Miami Dolphins nonsense. I cannot see that. No, I see Lane at LSU. Really? I do. That's a top three job in the sport. Gosh.
Starting point is 00:26:05 No, you disagree? Yeah. The last time you said that here, I was biting my tongue. Why? What's better? It's just not anymore. Historically, yes, and I know in the past, everybody's won. But don't you feel the playing field has leveled to the point that LSU's not that much better of a job?
Starting point is 00:26:20 Then what? Then Ole Miss? Then Ole Miss? Lane Kiffin's calling the shots right now. No, for Lane Kiffin right now. off this platform. You think LSU is a better job than, or excuse me, Ole Miss.
Starting point is 00:26:31 For Laine Kippen right now. So the money's not that different, Joel, okay? He runs the show. He's got total, he could say whatever he wants. At LSU, who's calling the shots there, by the way? Did Colin just text you? No, I haven't looked at my phone. He's dealing with the board of governors.
Starting point is 00:26:45 Yeah, Colin and I disagree greatly on this. I just think the landscape has changed with NIL, collectives. I know. I thought this was going to be just a really good experience. and then you hit me with that right at the end? So just to be clear, it's for Lane Kiffin, not anyone else. Like, Lane Kiffin is running things. He doesn't answer to nobody at Ole Miss.
Starting point is 00:27:07 I disagree. Okay, so, you know, Lane Kiffith says, Joel, why do you, I want to take the LSU job. Sell me on it. I don't have to sell you on it. One, you can open up the back door, and you can get a top four recruiting class, just regionally. They have more resources than anyone maybe other than Oregon.
Starting point is 00:27:27 It's just quieter than Oregon's. They've got... Were there in Texas? Oh, yeah. Illinois State? Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah, multiple, multiple billions. Sure hasn't shown up in those playoff trips the last five years. They were able to build a roster that was pretty substantial.
Starting point is 00:27:41 And granted, I don't think Brian Kelly was a good fit there. Lane would probably be a great fit at LSU. And you want to wait them out, huh? Oh, yeah. January 2nd, Lane, you're in the semifinal. We'll see. Is that worth it? it? We'll see. Lane's going to be the top three, two paid coach in college football?
Starting point is 00:28:00 Do we do a friendly wager that doesn't have to be monetary? I believe he stays at Ole Miss. Well, what are your options? You tell me who's the better option? You don't think Lane Kiffin is a great fit, so who's a good fit? No, no, I think for Lane Kiffin, staying at Old Miss makes sense. Okay, so who does LSU hire? Honestly, I don't know that it's that attractive, let me use that word, attractive of a job now, given all the upheaval with the AD, the board of governors, all this nonsense that's going on there. I mean, Joe, you're walking into a hornet's nest, true or false? False.
Starting point is 00:28:31 Take the crans away. What are we doing? All right, go. Colin has checked in. What about Lane in the NFL? New York Giants with Jackson Dart reunion? Yeah, no, no shot. No, and I said this to Colin last week.
Starting point is 00:28:46 I still think that as big of the United States, you know, as big of the United States. issues structurally that college football has. It's still more appealing to guys that have a heart for college football because of the influence and immortality that is offered in college football that is not offered in the NFL. Fine, go work in the NFL. And you can win a Super Bowl, you can win multiple Super Bowls, and all anyone is going to care about is who was your quarterback. But in college football, like, you're the king. You know, you win a couple of national championships and they build a statue of you out in front. And that program is always yours. You are the quarterback of that program. Plus, you still have the ability
Starting point is 00:29:26 to influence 18 to 22-year-olds, grow them, develop them, you know, from young men into men. And that's, I think that's still something that is appealing and attractive to a lot of guys that stay in the college level and is not offered at the NFL level. Good stuff. Joel Clatt. I'm sorry to derail things with LSU. That's all right. We'll talk off there. You can gall at me. It's fine. It's a good job, of course. Just not right. now. All right, coming up next, we got some news here. Two NFL teams would not talk to each other at the deadline. Rachel's got the info for us next. One more herd? Huge news. We created our own podcast called, Hey Jonas. We invented a podcast? Well, we didn't invent it.
Starting point is 00:30:50 We just contributed to... We're the first people to do podcasts. Pretty... Yeah, pretty wide range of podcasts throughout there. But this one's extra special. So how did we actually come up with a name, Hey Jonas, guys? I honestly don't remember.
Starting point is 00:31:03 I think it was on a call about what we should call it. Oh, we were thinking I'm originally calling it one of the early names of our band before Jonas Brothers. This is how you guys remember it going down? Yes. I have a very different memory of this. We were talking about a thing. a bit for the podcast
Starting point is 00:31:21 where people could call in and say, Hey Jonas. And then I wrote down on my little notepad, Hey Jonas, and offered it up as a potential title for the podcast. But thanks for remembering that, guys.
Starting point is 00:31:32 Listen to Hey Jonas on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcast. Just listen. We don't care where you hear it. Another podcast from some SNL late night comedy guy,
Starting point is 00:31:42 not quite. Unhumor me with Robert Smygel and friends. Me and hilarious guests from Bob Odenkirk to David Letterman help make you funny. This week, my guest, S&L's Mikey Day and headwriter, Streeter Seidel, help an a cappella band with their between songs banter. Where does your group perform? We do some retirement homes.
Starting point is 00:32:01 Those people are starving for banter. Listen to humor me with Robert Smigel and friends on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. That's where Sports Slice comes in. I'm Timbo. Every episode, we're cutting through the noise. Breaking down the plays, the controversies, and the stories behind the headlines.
Starting point is 00:32:27 We go straight to the source, the athletes themselves. Their locker room stories, their reactions, the stuff nobody gets to hear. The laughs, the drama, the triumphs, the moments that never make the highlight real. From viral moments to historic games, from buzzer beaters to controversial calls, we break it down, give you context and ask the questions everybody wants answered. Sports slice brings you closer to the action with stories told by the people. people who live them. Listen to SportsSlice on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcast.
Starting point is 00:32:56 And for more, follow Timbo Slicelife-Life 12 in the TikTok podcast network on TikTok. The French Open is one of the toughest tests in tennis. And I know firsthand because I competed there myself. I'm Renee Stubbs, and on the Renee Stubbs tennis podcast, I'm breaking down everything happening at Roland Garris. Every match, every upset, and what it really takes to win on clay. Genshin win. I mean, she went down at three to Rabakina, but I'm delighted.
Starting point is 00:33:25 She's an outsider to win the French for me. And she likes Clay. Listen, Lena Rubakina is arguably the best player in the world right now. And I actually can win on any surface. Because if she's serving, well, good luck. Consider this your court side seat to the French Open. Listen to the Renee Stubbs Tennis podcast on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Presented by Capital One, founding partner of IHeart Women's Sports.
Starting point is 00:33:50 What's up, fam, it's Isaiah Thomas. And I'm C.J. Toledano and our podcast, Point Game is about defying the odds. Like LeBron heading into the playoffs without Luca and Austin Reed. And finding ways to win no matter what. He's the smartest player to ever play the game. His IQ is at a level that we've never seen before. And he knows without Luca and Austin Reeves, I got to manipulate the game. We get a player's perspective on the challenges of the playoffs.
Starting point is 00:34:14 I think Joker's going to be exhausted this series because when they don't have Rudy in the lineup, he has to really guard guys like Nas Reid. He has to guard Julius Randall. And then he has to give us everything he gives us on the night-to-night basis on offense. And when IT's friends stop by, like Quentin Richardson, we dive into some playoff history too. Steve Nash would get that thing. That man, hell get the flying. He running up the court licking his fingers why he got the ball.
Starting point is 00:34:39 Like, after you go through a training camp with that, Isaiah, you figure it out real quick. Get your ass up and down the court, and you're going to get the ball. So listen to Point Game on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Fun stuff with Joel Clatt. He almost fell off the stage when I said for Lane Kiffin. Ole Miss makes more sense than LSU. I'm sure everybody will be reasonable online about that, obviously. Let's go to Rachel Nichols with the news.
Starting point is 00:35:10 No, no, no, no, turn on the news. This is the herd line news. We all almost fell off our seats, but you know. Jason, the Seahawks, who active at the trade deadline. They acquired former Saints' wide receiver Rashid Shahid. Remember, Shahid played for the Seattle offensive coordinator, Clint Kubiak last year in Norland, so he knows what he's got.
Starting point is 00:35:33 Now, Sheet is 27 years old. He has 44 receptions for 499 yards, two TDs and nine games this season. He will be a free agent at the end of this year, but Seattle definitely needed some reinforcements outside of JSN. So do you like it? What do you think? Like it a lot.
Starting point is 00:35:49 Yeah. It's weird. I feel like Seattle's more of a contender in the NFC than like Indy and Pittsburgh are in the AFC. Because they got to place really, really strong teams. I think there's a good move. They got weapons on the outside. Darnold is playing great. The defense is pretty formidable.
Starting point is 00:36:08 Seattle's a dangerous team right now. Assuming Darnold can keep it up. We saw what happened at the end of last season with Minnesota. A little tough. But yeah, I would have Seattle, you know, not much behind the Packers and Eagles in the NFC. I just like that Chehid's such a deep threat. Yeah. Because they already have someone to move the chains, but he really provides.
Starting point is 00:36:30 I think in the last three years, he's only behind Jemar Chase and Tyree Kill and catches over 40 yards. Oh, wow. So. That's a good company to be in. That's good acquisition there. All right. The Broncos, on the other hand, sat out at the trade deadline. They did not try to muscle up for a possible Super Bowl run, and maybe they don't need to.
Starting point is 00:36:50 They are sitting at 7 and 2, first place in the AFC West, tied for best overall in the NFL. Quarterback Bo Nix was asked about his team staying quiet, and he said there's a reason Denver didn't make a move. Take a listen. Obviously, if there's a need, you want to get it, but we feel like we're, we got all the pieces. And so sometimes when something like that happens, it shakes things up. and, you know, we got something good going, and we just want to keep riding this wave and find ways to win. Now, Jay Mack, the Broncos did reportedly reach out to the dolphins
Starting point is 00:37:23 about wide receiver Jalen Waddle, but the price was a first-round pick. They just decided too much. Do you agree with Bo Nix? You think they're good the way they are? I was just going through their roster, and I'm like, they're kind of stacked. I mean, Sertan's on the IR. That obviously hurts.
Starting point is 00:37:38 I can't find a discernible weakness other than Bo Nix, really. and you're not replacing him or finding a quarterback. So if he can get it together, just tighten it up. He struggled on the deep ball this year. Struggled on really everything. I think they're in good shape. Now, this is interesting, this Raiders game. This was the first bet I made this week.
Starting point is 00:37:58 And I, you know, start looking into the game. And I'm like, oh, the Broncos have the Chiefs after that. Chiefs are off a buy. Does Denver let one slip here against the Raiders? If they should lose, then they're playing the Chiefs. And next thing, you know, they're out of first place. Right. So, I mean, Bowdo Nix has to be great.
Starting point is 00:38:12 I think this is a pretty dangerous Denver team, but I don't know. You've been doing this long enough like I have. Like, I got to see it in the postseason from Bo Nix. I've seen it from Lamar, from Josh, from Mahomes. Like, I need to see it in the playoffs. Like, geez, look at those stats. They were a dominant fourth quarter team. Yeah, I think the Broncos made a good move, not making the move.
Starting point is 00:38:34 Well, look, I mean, you can't see it until the playoffs, until the playoffs come, right? So the best they could do is where they are now. I like that they didn't add a receiver. I think Bo Nix improvises a lot. He does. And that requires a lot of sort of rhythm and knowledge and knowing where your receivers are going to be and them knowing where you're going to do and you throw someone new in that mix halfway through the season. I don't know.
Starting point is 00:38:54 Yeah. I'm not sure that that would have been a good bet. Well, I also like your point about they got to have a chance to do it in the playoffs. Like OKC, I doubted them. I need to see in the playoffs, SGA. Well, we saw it last year. You're still doubting them. Yes.
Starting point is 00:39:08 A little bit, a little bit, a little bit. A little bit. Yesterday we saw six trades made, Jason. That is the third busiest deadline day in the last 35 years. But here's the juiciest story for me. I love this one. Reportedly the Titans who are in cell mode weren't willing to do business with the Patriots. According to one report, Titans owner Amy Adams Strunk,
Starting point is 00:39:29 she did not want to make deals with Mike Frable because of how Brable's tenure ended in Tennessee. J. Mack, you know I like to say there's no petty like NBA Petty, But this is close. Well, this is, this reminds me that Belichick story from a few weeks ago that he wouldn't let Patriot scouts come to practice or whatever. So I got to ask you, Rachel, like, I get petty. We all hold grudges. It's kind of human nature. But at the end of the day, like, are you doing a disservice to your team?
Starting point is 00:40:00 I mean, look, the Titans are one in eight. Yeah. Some salary relief. So I would say trade whoever you can with whoever you can. But look, Vrabels, we all know. Look, he took a bunch of assistance with him. There was definitely some bad blood at the end of his last season there. She thought that he had too much control over the roster.
Starting point is 00:40:20 She put in a GM to sort of balance that back out. He didn't like it. So, I mean, you know, there's stuff. Well, is that GM that she put in the one that traded A.J. Brown? I don't think so. Well, I mean, like, again, Brable's a really good coach. Look what he's done in one year. He had the Titans, the number one seed with Ryan Tannahill.
Starting point is 00:40:39 As quarterback. I mean, I know they had Derek Henry, but I don't know. It's just, listen, if you bashed Belichick for what he was doing to the Patriots, I think you kind of got to say, I got to bash the Titans for doing this and not, yeah. I mean, if you got to just make your team better, I think you've got to do it, right? Yeah. I mean, look, Rable was great for them, right? Three times in five seasons made the playoffs.
Starting point is 00:41:02 First championship game in 17 years. Sorry, 15 years for that franchise. Because at the end, don't you have to feel better about his tenure than how it ended? Yeah. I don't know. All right. Total agreement. Rachel with the news.
Starting point is 00:41:17 Well, that's the news. And thanks for stopping by. The herd line. All right. So yesterday we had midterms around the country. I was playing in a men's league game and prepping for the show. I have no idea what happened. I do.
Starting point is 00:41:29 Anyway, so today we're doing NFL midterms. Rachel and I, it's going to be fun. That's back after this. Be sure to catch live edition. of the herd weekdays in noon eastern 9 a.m. Pacific on Fox Sports Radio, FS1, and the IHeart Radio app. Hey, it's us, the Jonas Brothers, and guess what? So listen to Point Game on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Back here on the herd, wrapping up the second hour. And Rachel had some good little intel, little piece of information.
Starting point is 00:46:13 You want to reveal it? I don't know that this is public info yet. It's mainly for you because you're coming to the Lakers game tonight. Mookie Betts, Will Smith, Tyler Glassnow, Blake Snell, Evan Phillips. They're all coming to Lakers'Fers, the Dodgers, continuing to celebrate, you know, as if Freddie Freeman, D. doing the worm wasn't enough. So they'll be celebrating at Wembenyama, Lakers tonight.
Starting point is 00:46:39 Good, good one. All right, Rachel, midterms happened last night around the country. Midterm elections, very exciting stuff. We decided we do an NFL version of it. Here we go. All right, I'm like your ballot and then you can cast it, right? So ballot question number one, J-Mack. Who gets your vote for coach of the year?
Starting point is 00:46:56 All right, this one, to me, is not that difficult. I'm casting my vote. See this here on the screen. Boom. Mike Vrabel of the New England Patriots. I long believe, everybody, that if you can do more with less, you're the man for the job, and I absolutely love the move the Patriots made. I think Brable's been phenomenal.
Starting point is 00:47:15 How about this stat? 6-0 when quarterback Christian Gonzalez plays. Breaking news, he's not on the injury report today. According to Vrable, that's great news. Huge game for them against the Bucks. I just think Vrable's done a phenomenal job a year ahead of schedule. All right. Question number two, which means we're already up to more than was on the California
Starting point is 00:47:33 your ballot yesterday. Who gets your vote for MVP in the midterm? All right, this one, another layup. I'm casting my vote. Here we go. Most value, a comeback player of the year. Oh, most valuable player of the year. MVP, baby. Yeah, MVP. This one was not difficult, folks, and that's Sammy Darnold. Yes, the quarterback of the Seattle Seahawks. I know some people, Jason, you're crazy. Guys, just by the numbers, and this is bothering me, Sam Darnold has been absolutely tremendous with Seattle. the numbers are ridiculous. I know his odds are not great, but he's the best downfield passer in the NFL. Seattle rebooted it quarterback and wide receiver one, and they're perfectly fine.
Starting point is 00:48:13 Give me, Sam Darnold is the MVP. Of till now, right? So there you go. Just to now. Yeah, there you go. All right, who does now? Now do it. Who gets your comeback player of the year? Yes, another easy one. My guy carrying my fantasy team, I'm casting my ballot for Christian McCaffrey. Oh my gosh, the usage is through the roof, probably too much, but Rachel, he's been dynamic. It's interesting. Sequan Barkley really struggling this year. Christian McCaffrey, who missed most to last year, he's back with a vengeance.
Starting point is 00:48:41 I'm not going to rattle off the numbers, by the way, he is the favorite to win comeback player of the year. But he's on pace for a 2,000-yard season with rushing and receiving yards, a thousand each. Pretty impressive. Yeah. All right. Now, so this is the part of the ballot, like when they ask you to pick judges, we're getting a little more deep in the weeds. Right? Who gets your vote for offensive rookie of the year?
Starting point is 00:49:00 This is tough because Abuka's been phenomenal. Tyler Warren has been transformational. T-Mack, pretty damn good. I am casting my ballot for Jackson Dart. Yes, the ladies man in New York City. He's got the popular mom. He's very cool, swagged out. Have you seen the photos of him rolling up to New York City clubs?
Starting point is 00:49:20 Yes. I mean, listen, he's got the drip going on. Heavy necklaces, like a white t-shirt, baggy pants. I'm like, okay, I need that look. I mean, he's been the man. And on the field, Rachel, he's got like, nobody. Malik neighbors is gone,
Starting point is 00:49:33 scataboos hurt. I got to say, I was wrong on Dart. I think he's been outstanding. Offensive rookie of the year. Give it to me. He's a favorite,
Starting point is 00:49:40 by the way. He's got nobody, but he's got charisma, JMA. He's got the Riz. As your daughters like to say. Right, exactly.
Starting point is 00:49:46 Defensive rookie of the year, who you got. This was a little more challenging. Some strong candidates. Abdul Carter's been good, not amazing. Guys from Seattle, Dallas, Philly.
Starting point is 00:49:56 All well, but I'm going to cast my vote. This is the toughest one on the ballot. that Jihad Campbell, the young linebacker for the Eagles, has basically stepped into a Super Bowl winning team and not missed a beat. I cannot believe how good he's been.
Starting point is 00:50:09 Second best odds right now behind Carter. He's grading out as the fourth best linebacker in the NFL as a rookie, according to pro football focus. Jihad Campbell, Jihad Campbell, just outstanding rookie year. All right. So now that's the rookies. Overall, who's your vote for best offensive player of the year so far? Yeah.
Starting point is 00:50:29 I don't think this is much of a challenge. The ballot easily. I know you want to hear Jonathan Taylor, but no, sir. J.S.N. Jackson Smith, the Jigba. He's emerged, I think, is the best receiver in the NFL. Folks, he's open on every play. Look at the stutter step at the line of scrimmage. He's shaking everybody.
Starting point is 00:50:46 J.S.N. Absolutely love it. Offensive player of the year. And what about defense? Who's your on that side? Defense? Yeah, this one, because I don't like Jerry Jones. Casting that ballot for Mr. Michael Parsons.
Starting point is 00:50:58 I know Garrett had the five-sack. Hutchish has been great. Micah Parsons, amazing. Plus he's got a badass face mask. Look at that. That is cool. I cast my vote for Micah Parsons and the Super Bowl-bound, Green Bay Packers. You're just as petty as the Titans owner, apparently. Yeah, the beach allows it. Who gets your vote for the team who will finish with the most regular season wins?
Starting point is 00:51:22 Yeah, I had to look at the schedule and going forward, I'm casting my vote for the Buffalo Bills. I feel like they unlocked something during the bi-week, totally bottled up Carolina, which had been rolling, and then bodybagged the Chiefs in a big spot. I think they're in really good shape. The schedule bears it out. They have the dolphins left. They have Jake Browning, Dylan, Gabriel, Justin Fields. Rachel, they're cooking. Yeah.
