Live in Los Angeles, hour or two, it's the herd. Wherever you may be. However, you may be listening. IHeart Radio, Fox Sports Radio, FS1. Greg Kosel, Mark Sanchez, Sanchez in about 30 minutes. So let me start with this premise. Running back is currently a position in the NFL Jammer. That good GMs will not.

signed to a second contract. You do not need to be great to win a Super Bowl. The Chiefs just did with a seventh round running back. The best running backs in the NFL are Josh Jacobs for the Raiders, didn't make the playoffs. I mean, you could argue. Aaron Jones for the Packers did not make the playoffs. Dalvin Cook got beat by the Giants in the playoffs.

So let's start with this premise. Running backs are nice. Derek Henry did not make the playoffs. playoffs. Running back, you want to be capable. You don't need to be great. Is that fair? Totally agree. Okay. So let's start with this premise. So yesterday on this show, I said, you have to consider, it doesn't mean you have to do it. I'm 60-40. I think Justin Fields is going to work. 60-40. Not 90-10. That was Burrough. Not 100-0. That was Trevor Lawrence. I'm 60-40. the Bears had a 10-game losing streak, of which Justin Fields, I think, played eight.

It is hard to lose 10 straight games in the NFL. Hard. Houston only lost 9 straight. And they had six one-bossession losses they were tanking. They took the chiefs to overtime. It is hard to lose 10 straight games. So if you have the number one pick in a draft, it's hard to get that, too, right? and you lost 10 straight games, it's sort of weird to say, hey, let's run it back at quarterback.

You've got to consider what's going on. So let's be fair because this was Justin Field's second year, and we know that quarterbacks get better, right? They should have big leaps, first year, second year, early, second year late. Let's take his last five games of last year. Last five games, that's fair. So the last five games he started. Passer ratings 83.

Not great. Five touchdowns, four picks. Not great. He did, however, get more accurate, 63%. That I like. And I am 60-40 on Justin Fields making it. But be careful about something I hear all the time from fans with teams with average quarterbacks.

He got nothing to work with. Let's examine that. The New York Giants in a tougher division went to the playoffs and won a game. The New York Giants have a significantly worse offensive line. I'll go to PFF grading. Giants 30th. Bears 14th. Justin Fields had a better offensive line than Angel Jones.

Tight end. Cole Comet would start for the Giants. Running back. Edge Giants. but the Bears have two serviceable backs, and nobody thinks running back carries you to Super Bowls. Oh, oh, oh, I forgot. Wide receiver.

Bears have nothing to work with. Darnell Moody is better than any Giants receiver. Once Cadarius Tony got shipped off, pure talent, Mooney would start for the Giants. And so would Chase Claypool. He would. Chase Claypool. had nine touchdowns as a rookie.

His first two years in this leave, he was wildly productive. And he started this year with Mitch Trubisky and a rookie Kenny Pickett. Even then, Chase Claypool, even then with Mitch Trubisky, a bad old line, an offensive coordinator, nobody likes in Pittsburgh. And then Kenny Pickett, he had 32 catches in eight games. he went to Chicago and disappeared. You're not a little worried about that? So the Bears have a better O-line, believe it or not, than the Giants,

better at Tide-in, more than serviceable at running back. Luke Getsey is absolutely respected offensive coordinator, and two of your receivers would start for the Giants. Mooney would be the – Darnel can play. Let's stop that. He can play. I think he's a two in this league, but he can play, and he's better than anybody at the Giants.

have. I think Cadarius Tony has more talent, but they, you know, they moved him off to Kansas City. So be very careful about that. He's got nothing to work with. The O-Line's not a disaster. Giants is. Tight-end's good. Giants isn't. Backs are fine. I'm saying, Chase Claypool disappeared. Would he have disappeared going to Kirk Cousins, Josh Allen, Burrow, Herbert. What do you have disappeared going to? I don't think so. What do you have disappeared? Look how good some of these receivers.

I mean, Cadarius, Tony, and the Super Bowl, I touched the ball like five times. I'm just saying, I'm not saying Justin Fields won't work. But if I have to hear again, we got nothing to work with. It's not as pathetic as the Giants offense, where it's sake. Juan Barkley at really a non-crucial position. Running backs are nice. Green Bay had a great one. Tennessee had a great one. Raiders had a great one. It was arguably the three best backs in the league. They didn't make the playoffs. Minnesota has a great one. They got beat by the Giants in the playoffs. So listen, I don't want to jump in here, Colin. I think this is a fascinating topic.

I know the bears aren't huge for our show, right? But do you think with Justin Fields the Bears can build a contender to make the playoffs in the next two years. Because that's what you're up against. In two years, you've got to pay Justin Fields. So is the decision more about, can we build a, I mean, where's the defense in this? Bottom five defense in the league. Can't name three factors on the defense. If I look at this team and I say, we can't build a playoff team in two years.

I ship fields out. I start over with a new quarterback. If I'm the new GM, I just bought myself some extra time. and then I say, quarterback on the rookie deal, now I've got four years to try to make a playoff team here. And again, I like fields a lot. And this is a tough. I think we both think he's a wildly dynamic athlete.

But the rest of the team, defense, offense, I don't think in two years when you've got to pay fields, like $35 million. That's the going rate for these quarterbacks. So the bears have a lot of cap space. So they can solve some of their defensive shortcomings. Bingles did this two years ago with Burrell. They went and bought a defense.

By the way, the Jaguars this year went and bought an offense. They did? So the Bears can solve some of their defensive issues. Just go buy them. But at some point, and I would say in the offense, I would replenish, I'd go get another tied end. I'd get another receiver. So you think they can be a playoff team in two years?

I'm not sure they can't. Oh, okay, okay. I'm not sure they can't. Now, they could get a big break. Aaron's out of the division is obviously a break. Well, Detroit Lions are on the up. tick. And Minnesota's got a lot of... They're above a... They're always viable.

Nine and eight-ish team. Yeah. So I'm just saying, don't tell me you can't discuss this. You have to discuss it. Two years, even at the end of last year where he was better, it's an 83-passer rating. And the O-line is better than the Giants. The tight ends, better than the Giants. Two of their receivers would start for the Giants, and they have serviceable running backs. Not great. You're not picking them for your fantasy team, probably, but they're fine. I do like Fields a lot, but again, I don't think this team is making the playoffs. So I would then get my scouting report, hey, do we like Bryce Young?

Do we like C.J. Stroud? Do we like Will Levis? I don't know. Or do you say we're going to keep Justin Fields? We're going to trade out of the number one pick. Maybe Indy, Jim Ursay. Hard up already for Bryce Young. Okay. So it's interesting.

So the top four picks are Chicago, Houston, Arizona Colts. So why would Houston move up if they think Chicago's taking Will Anderson? They don't need to. They can get Bryce Young. So I don't think Chicago has as big a market as you think to trade down. So Arizona is going to take a defensive player. Or Gannon will want to trade down. They need a lot of stuff in Arizona.

Everybody wants to trade down unless you have star quarterbacks. We don't have a star quarterback. So Arizona takes defense. Chicago takes defense and Houston knows it. Well, Indy knows. Indy doesn't love any of these quarterbacks. They may think Bryce Young is better, but Bryce Young isn't Caleb Williams or Drake May next year. He's not Trevor Lawrence.

So nobody around Chicago has to move up. Houston's going to get their quarterback, and the Colts are going to get their quarterback. Well, so we're in the process now of looking at houses. We've been thinking about buying a house. And the number one rule is do not fall in love with a house because then you end up overpaying and it goes awry. The quarterback process has begun for a lot of these needy teams, Colin. The combine's coming up here, what, two weeks?

They're going to go interview the quarterbacks. somebody's going to fall in love with young Stroud or Levis. In those interviews, somebody's going to, oh, this guy's so great. He commanded the room. These are not. These are not A-prospects. I would agree that being said, we usually, people trade it up for Carson Wentz. Another bad quarterback that was taken top three.

The jet took Zach Wilson, too. They fell in love with him. Like, Zach Wilson. It happens, man. Somebody's going to like, boy, Will Levis. I got his master's degree already. 4-0 in high school, college, like, super smart. Lots of like about Will Levis.

Somebody's going to fall in love with one of these guys. Will Levis is the one that I will say this. I can't tell you who told me this because... Yes, I was present for it. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Okay. Will Levis, two offensive coaches I know in the league, like Will Levis, and here's what both said.

As a junior, he had a much better O line. This past year, the O line was awful, awful for, for Kentucky. Really bad. And remember, it was a great year for SEC defenses as usual. So Will Levis is running for his life. So add context to it. Will Levis is big, smart in college. Also, it's not, you know, Kentucky, do you think of Kentucky as a brilliant offensive scheme? No, you thought Lincoln Riley is that. You know, there's guys around the country that you think, oh, that's a really, Chip Kelly is known as somebody. You know, Ryan Day at Ohio State. I think Brian Kelly does a good job with offense.

We don't really necessarily think of Kentucky football as a great offensive power. That's nothing against Stoops, good coach, whatever. But Will Levis because he's bigger and stronger than Bryce Young. And I think when you talk to NFL guys, they think Will's the guy you can mold. A lot of doubters on C.J. Stroud. It's not me. Some doubt. And Bryce Young's tiny.

A buck 88. We haven't even got to the fourth guy. Okay? Anthony Richardson from Florida, who has like maybe a dozen starts. He is a project. But when he walks in a room, this dude is a strapping six four. You're like, oh, this guy's an Adonis.

No, no, no question. This is Jaylen Hertz, like, jacked. And I don't know that he has the accuracy. He definitely doesn't have to start, but somebody's going to overdraft Anthony it. It's tough to find quarterbacks. No, no, no. He's going on the first round.

I don't love him going in the first, but I could see, you think I'm crazy on this. I could see a team, you know, if you go get Aaron, Rodgers, who's going to be 39, I could see a team drafting Richardson behind him. Dude, I believe Jordan Love led the country in interceptions, and the Packers traded up to get him in the first round. Yeah. Because Jordan Love had a better previous year. Yeah, he looked good.

Darnel Mooney is easily the best receiver on either team. Giants are bears. So stop telling me. And Chase Claypool would start for the Giants too, although he's probably a second or a third. All I'm saying is Mooney is better than anybody the Giants have.

And Claypool, very productive in Pittsburgh, even last year with Kenny Pickett and Trabisky. And the battle line goes to Chicago, disappears. I'm just saying it's, would he have disappeared with Herbert or Trevor Lawrence? I'm just saying. So Calhurt, listen, I've done a lot of. radio. I've done a bunch of TV. All right. And I just

I'm not gassing you up here. I've never worked with anybody who's looking at Chicago Bear depth charts. I'm sorry. During the commercial breaks and looking at how many draft picks they have and thinking, how do we fix the Bears? This stuff's fun. It's pretty cool. I got to say, I respect you a lot for them. It's the Chicago Bears. They stink. Nobody cares about

them. Nobody. Half the audience is like, can we go back to Baggin on Aaron Rogers? No, no, let me ask you. For years and years, I had said the Golden State Warriors have one of the great fan bases in the league. They would put tons of fans in that building for 30 years post Rick Berry. They had Monte Ellis for an hour. The minute they're good, highest price tickets in the league. San Francisco is a great NBA city. They were just poorly run forever until Joe Lake bought them, right?

Chicago's a great NFL town. I just don't trust their front office. They have a defensive culture. They can't figure it out. You got to stop on this. Whenever I hear, I have always caution tape, whenever I hear this, our quarterback has nothing to work with. First year in the league, Justin Herbert, 31 TD's 10 picks with the 32nd rated O-line. What about their receivers? Mike Williams never healthy. He was a rookie out of the PAC 12. They put him in.

Coach got fired. O-line awful. He was brilliant. And it a tougher division. I don't want to hear excuses. End of last year. Packers down. Come on.

You got to win games. You can't have a 10-game losing streak. By the way, you just mentioned. and the Chargers. I didn't want to bring this up because I like the Chargers. I'm rooting for them. I know you have connections with him. I heard from like three different people at the Super Bowl that Keenan Allen is probably going to be a cap casualty. I'm like what the hell? You take it away his possession receiver? That's not an easy fix. Without him, they did not look great at times this year. And I know people are saying receivers are luxury goods. I like Mike Williams. You got to

keep Keenan Allen. He needs to get paid. He's hurt a lot. Colin, I don't want this team to regress. I don't want Herbert to stay. You know what? College football gives you 25 receivers a year. They've got a lot of number two and three receivers in the building potentially. I like Keenan. Can't pay Mike and him. Can't do it.

You're paying your running. You're going to be a quarterback of fortune now. You can't do it. You're paying Kahlia Mack. I would pay him out of Bosa. I would sooner get off Kalil Mack than I would. And you made that awful cornerback from New England. Oh, that was a disaster.

What a disaster that was. All right. J. Mack with the news. No. No. Turn on the news. This is the herd line. All right, let's start with Lamar Jackson and the Ravens.

Still no long-term deal in place, but they're having communication. And allegedly it's positive. Ravens reportedly sought input from Lamar during their office of coordinator search and used it before making the decision to hire Todd Monkin from Georgia. Awesome. You think this helps in the deal? Or is this just like, hey, we're going to butter you up. What do you think about Todd Monkin?

If Fox came to me and said, hey, we're going to make a big hire, what's your recommendation? I would be much more likely to stay at a company who did that. If I'm Lamar Jackson and you ask me who I like and I get a say, that tells me he's staying with Baltimore. Time out. Is he coming off his money stamps? It's one thing. What do you like to say always to me? Actions speak louder than words.

I think somebody else said that before me. But go ahead. You didn't originate that? No, I didn't. Okay. They're saying all the right things about offensive coordinator search. he wants the money. Show that man the money and they're not doing it.

Okay, he's going to get the money. He's not going to get Mahomes money, but nobody's paying anybody. Nobody's not getting my home's money. He's going to get the money. They're going to pay him the money. What's the money? He better get more than Dak Prescott money. See, now he'll get paid. They'll come off that. He's not going to sit out again. I trust Baltimore's ownership. I trust Lamar.

They're going to get the money figured. You think it'll be worked out. I just don't think you can give up Lamar Jackson. glass half full Colin making an appearance at 10.30 mark of the show. Quarterback wins 75%. Next issue. That ain't my issue. My issue's not quarterback. 75% while on his rookie deal.

His team always draft and develops well. I can't wait. It's got to be drama. Next up, Aaron Rogers. Oh, he's in his darkness retreat. I forgot all about it. He's in some cabin somewhere. It's in Oregon, I heard.

Internet is going crazy. You know, I saw a picture of it yesterday. It didn't look that dark. During the day, it can't be dark. It looked like a cheap hotel. It did not look dark. It looked like a discount hotel you'd find on the side of a road. Somebody was saying they were, you get food just handed to you.

So you're not like totally. Yeah. It was way better than I thought. I thought his thing was in a cave, in Arkansas. It's just in the, it's in the woods in Oregon. It looks like a cheap hotel room. That's not, I could do that. I know the producers are listening.

You could do that? Not, I couldn't do the show from there, but I could live there for four days. Four? I saw it. Get real. No, I saw it. It's not that big of a deal. It had like, granted.

countertop, crown molding, it was very nice. Oh, crowd molding is going to keep you good for three days in a darkness retreat. It wasn't as scary or as daunting. I thought it was going to be like spider webs. Oh, come on. This isn't a Scooby-Doo episode. No, they got a hot tub in there. It was a cheap hotel room.

There's no one to talk to. There's no one. Who cares? I talk to myself all day. I don't need anybody to talk to. I talk to myself. I talk here to the America, three hours a day. I'm just blah, blah, blah.

I can talk to myself forever. See, that's a scary thing. I could do that too, but I couldn't do four days, just talking to myself. I was the only thing I want, can I get a recorder? I would tape myself so I'd get some good rants out of it. I don't mind talking to myself. That's not bad. I just want to retain them.

Yeah, like two days in, you're going to have some really good deep clairvoyant. Oh, I'd come on this show and crush it. Best ratings ever. So you talk to yourself a lot. All day long. Let me ask you this. Do you ever like kind of boast to your kids about whatever you've got professionally or Man, I crushed my tennis coach today.

My kids don't care. You don't? My kids could care less. So I had a basketball game this summer. Oh, God. I dropped. It was my greatest game ever, nine threes. There's no video footage in a summer league.

Colin, I came home and told my kids all about it, and they were like, they don't care. Neat. My wife's like, so, can you take out the garbage? Yeah. I was like, all right. Anyways, Aaron Rogers, I forgot where we were going here. According to Fox Bet, the Packers have him at plus 125 to stay in Green Bay.

He's traded the top destinations, the Raiders. Explain that to the audience what that means. Follow by the Jets, Dolphins, and 49. A lot of fans don't know a plus 125 needs. So if you believe he's going to stay with the Packers and you bet a hundred bucks, you win $125. That's right. So that's a good bet.

I would take the Packers. Right. But I think the Raiders makes a ton of sense. I don't see it. You know, we have a quarterback coming up in a moment. Maybe he'll shed some light on this. He just stepped into the studio. I saw him out of the corner of my eye.

He played for one of those teams. No, no chance of the 49ers, right? No, he can't afford him. Absolutely. And I had no chance for the Dolphins. They got Waddle's contract coming up and they got Tyreek Hilday and they're paying the left tackle and they're paying a lot of people. I think stay in greenwich. Didn't they just take Bradley Chubbs contract or something from Denver?

I don't know what the cap space is for the dolphins. It can't be great. Raiders have nothing but cap. Bears and Raiders, I know I have a ton of cap space. Final story. Let's get to the NBA. Pat Bev was traded by the Lakers at the deadline last week. Kind of got lost while we were in Arizona.

We didn't get to spend much time on this guy. Criminally overrated. A total nightmare for the Lakers. On his latest podcast, he spoke about what went wrong for the team this season. He doesn't think their problems are on the court. It wasn't basketball. It was other bleep, but other bleep that you really can't pin or point out. You know, it comes and goes.

A little bit here, a little bit there. The vibes were sometimes on, sometimes off. Inconsistent vibes. lead to inconsistent play. You guys all bang on Pat Bev. That's smart sounding to me. Philosophical. I think he's right on the money.

I think that's what they've been inconsistent. Who could have seen those inconsistent vibes coming when they got like seven new guys on the roster? Well. And Russell the vampire Westbrook. Oh, he's not either. That's over. We don't know that. You're doubting it?

Russell's wife was very upset when that came out. Very upset. I don't know his wife. She didn't like that. The NBA media, NBA Twitter doesn't get. Yes, Russell Westbrook can be a super nice guy. guy. He can tip really well. He's awesome off the court. And oh, by the way, with the

Lakers, he was a train wreck. It was a disaster. Well, the NBA... He's sued it with both coaches, Cowher. Yeah, no, the NBA is different because there are like 10 agents that you have to have access to. Maybe six. Like Rich Paul, you've got to have access to Rich Paul. Yeah, you've got to kiss butt with all the clutch sports. Let's say there's five agents

you have to have contact with. Because these stars are impossible to get to. So if you alienate those agents and their players, they, I mean... They shut you out. So that's why you almost never see a reporter rip a player. Now, Kyrie went off the reservation.

That's different. That's why you get more NBA stuff here out of us than you do out of these guys who have to cozy up to the relationships. We don't need the relationships. Well, yeah, I mean, a lot of the best NBA stuff is on a podcast. If you cover the league, I find NBA podcasting. I got a guy that's great. Draymond Green is great. He didn't have to suck up to anybody.

NBA reporters, there's a really, really delicate balance. Baseball's got something that because baseball, you're around the players for seven months. Very rarely will you get a local reporter, rip a local player, or the rest of the team will turn on you. So you have to like soft pedal it constantly as a baseball reporter. In the NBA, you can't lose access to agents. In the NFL, it doesn't matter. There's a million guys that matter. Quarterbacks get ripped.

They understand it. The football culture is very critical of its players. Players get it. There's not one or two agents. There's a bunch of agents. So if you cover Kevin Durant in Brooklyn, you cannot go after, because then you've got to go in the locker room and they'll all shut you down. Or Rich Clim and his agent will be like, Colin, I'm not giving you info. You're killing my guy.

Kevin Durant was in Phoenix. A bunch of guys I know were right around him as he's just totally trashing Ben Simmons. I talked about it on my podcast. Like, NBA reporters can't go out and say this, but he's like, I can't play with this guy anymore. Come on, I can't be with deal with this. But like reporters can't put that out there. Are you good? You're right? I'm all right. I'm hanging in there. He just gets worked up about the news, you know? Well, I mean, You know how the game is in the media. In the NFL, you guys get crushed.

NFL players get treated worse by the media than anybody, even stars like Aaron Rogers. Not us. You guys get tagged. And you worked in the hardest media market where you got the New York Times, the daily news, the New York Post, the New York, bloody, bloody. It sounds like a Billy Joel phone. Yeah.

Okay, so let me throw this to you. Talk to me. We were saying if you look at the gathers. between Mahomes and the other top quarterbacks, burrow, this, and that. There's a gap. But I could argue it's closer than Jalen Hertz. If Aaron gets traded out,

it's closer than the- Oh, NFC versus AFC, you're saying. Yeah. Okay. Like if Aaron gets moved, and the stories are Green Bay wants to move him. Brady's gone, Aaron's gone. Who's the second best NFC quarterback after Jalen Hertz?

I mean, you have to think about that with a contract. It's like, we got to lock this guy up. Yeah, oh, yeah. I haven't broken it down that way, but it is glaring. I could argue it's golf. And I like Jared. Yeah, well, Jared was on the right track, right. Good O.C.

trajectory. So what do you make of, here's what worries me, though, Mark. Should I slow down, should we slow down? 15 Super Bowl carries, 11 a game. Well, it's a lot like the Josh Allen. It's the formula to win. Back to the formula to win. What does that mean?

How many times is your quarterback going to run the ball? He's built a lot better to take those. to take those hits like a Josh Allen, him and Josh Allen like similar, maybe not as tall as Josh, but similar body type with a bigger, thicker guys. Different than Lamar Jackson, different than

Kyler Murray, where those guys are going to run and take some hits, but you don't know longevity-wise. And Jalen did get hurt this year, don't forget. Like, he hurt his shoulder. He played hurt too. Exactly. And I wouldn't be surprised that they have to go in and clean that thing up this offseason or whatever. It's going to take some attention, some rehab, some rest.

whatever that looks like. So, yes, that is something. But the other issue is the two big Super Bowl runs in recent history that the Eagles have made, it's been a group effort where the quarterback's on a rookie deal. And the first time Nick Foles had to come in and play reliever and plays outstanding. Okay, he's Mariana Rivera, Sandman, and just knocks him out, right? Strikes everybody out, wins the game, beats Brady. Boom.

well they had a heck of us that was like the best roster in football by the end of the year right and they made some serious trades and movement howie roseman shout out right this was the same exact formula now with jalen hertz and a quarterback that can really move okay if you're going to pay this guy and back up the brink's truck whatever the going rate is you're going to lose some of that all the guys like limval joseph and domicsu these guys who came on towards the end of their career right their last stop before retirement like you're going to lose some of that ability you're going to lose some of that ability you're going to lose some of that ability you're going to lose some of that ability you're And when guys go down, your premier players go down, you're not going to have that stud with a 10-year resume, maybe on the back nine of his career. But who can, you know, you plug and play, boom, patch it up for five weeks and keep it moving and keep us at the top of our game or near it. That's going to be the issue there. And that's really the formula. Like you draft your quarterback, build the team around him, and then make a decision. But Jalen Hertz, you can't move off of him. You just hope he's going to be reasonable in some of those negotiations to one of the first.

to win, right? If you make winning the priority, then getting paid is going to be a little bit less. And plus, you're the Eagles quarterback. It's maybe not Dallas, but you're still, I mean, there's plenty of pub. There's plenty of marketing opportunities. And, you know, it looks like everything he does off the field. Like, we talked about this. He has that Jordan kind of aura to him, the single hoop earring. You know, he's always in a suit and tie. He's always looking sharp, says the right thing. You can tell he's a thoughtful, intelligent, purposeful human, you know? And so I think he'll make the right decision. The team will make the right decision.

The bigger ones are Kelsey, Lane Johnson, making sure those guys are healthy. Lane's coming back. We were told. Yeah, I think that makes sense. He's, what, 32? Yeah, he's fine. I think he was just battling that abdomen deal for a while. And that's hard because you're constantly torquing giant, you know, massive guys coming

off the edge trying to beat you and get your quarterback. So the big one in the middle is Kelsey, though, because he's the real anchor, that O line. So let's talk. One of the reasons, when you come on this show, I always think one of the things that truly fascinates me is you really, you and Sean Payton do this, you really find these little habits and flaws. And it's always fascinating to me

how a nugget of information becomes a play. Oh, yeah. Just a guy that cheats on the corner or a linebacker that drop is slow. So there were a couple of touchdowns by the chiefs. And those were clearly Philadelphia. So let's talk about those. I just think it's so funny because from offensive guys in a West Coast system,

that's where I think the similarities you're talking about, whether it's Coach Payton or any other West Coast kind of mentality coach. That's the way I grew up. That's the way I learned, you know? So in the two scoring plays late in the game, the return motions. I know everybody's making a big deal out of it. Like, wow, what an incredible scheme. Well, when you run shallow cross, boom, you tell these guys, put the fear of God in them.

Put the fear of God in that corner. You're telling the receiver. put the fear of God in him, that you're going to cross the ball and get across the formation way too fast. So what's the response? Slave points at the safety says, hey, swap me, pizza party. You take my piece. I'll take yours. Boom.

You run with them across the formation. Well, when he does that the first time, if we can go back to that first play, the Tony play again. He does that. And right as that communication's happening, boom, they snap the ball. He slams on the brakes and nobody's there. It's a you got him. No, you got him. Nobody's got him.

So does Mahomes, do you think? think, see the finger point. No, no, no, this is a run also, by the way. This is an RPO. He can hand this ball off. See the back go in front of them? It's a run. They're blocking run up front.

But if they screw up the communication, he knows, boom, I got a freebie. And the way they designed it, it's already in his scope of vision. It's already in his lane. So he's faking to the quarterback right in front of him and flashing, or excuse me, the quarterback is faking to the halfback in front of him flashing. And he's still able to stare at that because you can hand a ball off blind. The running back has the mesh, that point where. in which you and the ball on the running back intersect, he knows if he sticks it in my belly,

I'm taking it. And the Holmes can release it. But he does just a quick flash, boom, sees the communication error and gets the ball out, almost without moving his feet because he's a baseball player, middle infield, boom, turn two. That's all it is. The next one, because that happened, I guarantee you they went to the sideline and said, just lock him across the formation right here. Skymore goes in motion.

Quarterback, stay with him no matter what. Okay, fine. That's a reaction, right? Same thing. He's got the option to throw this or not. But when you're going to lock a player like that, when you're going to lock him running across formation, you have to see in front. You can't blindly run. So as soon as he realizes he's in motion, boom, he turns to find his own defenders and realize, do I go over the backers, under the backers, who's in my way? How am I going to navigate this to cover this guy across the entire field? And you're doing it on offense. You're calling that motion and using speed and deception. to try and get a half-man advantage on the other side, to beat a guy east to west. And if he goes under the backers, boom, you'll have a response to get up the field

because now you're going to beat him. If he goes over the backers, then you can get them to play over the top and then undercut him. So there's all these like move, counter-move, move, counter-move like a chess game. But they had answers to both, which is awesome. I mean, that's just like hedging your bet

all the way around and then counting on the quarterback, the trigger man, to give it to the right guy. Hey, we're going on the fast break. You know what to do. They double team here, get it there. If they, boom, if they split the defenders, it's a three on two fast break. If they split, take it to the hole. If they go one way or another, you know what to do with the ballpoint guard.

We trust you. Okay, we're going to come back with Mark. He's got interesting video on the call. The two calls. Yeah, so don't go anywhere. I love this. You and Peyton do this. They're fun.

Are we doing penalties first or QB Carousel? I want to go the penalty thing because I said yesterday,

a great movie isn't ruined because of a choppy ending and a terrible movie isn't great because of a perfect sequence at the end. That was a great game. And the ending was odd. Let's talk you through it. You talk us to it. It was interesting because there's a third and eight

in the second quarter where Juju Smith-Schuster gets held over the middle. He's running like an in-cut and Bradbury clearly holds him and he gets away with it. They talked about it on the broadcast. I went to the game with my son, my fiancee was awesome. Then I went back and watched it.

But you see J-J-J-J-Jus-Sho-Shooster run the in-rout, and Bradbury totally hooks him, grabs his arm, boom, and everybody's looking around for a flag, complained about it on the broadcast. I thought it was a miscall. Yeah, it was a total miscall. Well, then they caught it at the end. He did it twice.

He got caught once, okay? Like, that's the way it goes. Like, he got caught holding him again at the end. Show the end of the game, the third down again in the tight red zone, low red zone. He held him, he got beat, he holds them,

hoping they don't catch it, whatever. What's crazy right here is, look at there's 150-ish on the clock, okay? the very next play, because here's the situation, you're trying to stop them on third down, boom, there's clearly a jersey grab. I mean, you're impeding progress, the jersey grab. It's a no-brainer.

Now, circumstantially, timing of the game, does it suck? Yes. What are you going to do? It's a hold. The first play of the preseason and the last play of the Super Bowl. It's a hold. Like, bottom line. So what?

There's plenty of plays that led up to this. Also this, Mark, the Chiefs complain loudly about the first one that wasn't called. No doubt. So the officials here. you guys missed it. Yeah. It's in the back of your brain. Of course it is.

So also like there's plenty of other plays that led to a loss here. How about some of the rush lane integrity from this defensive line from the Eagles that give up a huge scrambles to a guy with a busted ankle? Like, okay, so don't give, there's a laundry list of ways that the Eagles lost the game and the Chiefs won the game. Whatever. What's crazy to me is the nuance of this situation. It's third down. You are trying to stop them. It's a tie game.

There's a minute 50-ish. left when they snap the ball on that play, on that third down. The defense is trying to stop the offense, hold them to a field goal to go down three, get the ball back with about a minute 45, minute 40 left, and go score and win the game, or get to the 35, 30, tie it, go to overtime, roll the dice in overtime. That's the situation. The very next play, because they allowed the penalty and because they got the penalty and got a first down, it turns out. into defensive mentality is now freeway. We used to call it on defense freeway. Let them score. On offense, you tell them no moss, no more. That's for you, J. Mac, Spanish. So, no moss on

offense means we have a field goal in the bag. We're going to win the game. We need to milk the clock. We need to choke this team out and not give them anything on the other end. That's why McKinnon hits the deck. Right. Doesn't score, right? So I'd argue that this is one of the toughest plays to coach as a defense because it literally changes from down to down, but I'd argue that it changes in the middle of the down. In a way, if you could go back, and this is completely in a vacuum, probably not possible. But if you could go back, burn a time out on defense,

you'd take it away from your offense because you're going to have to go score, so that'd be tough. But if you could burn a time out on defense and say, hey, we're trying to stop him. If you get beat, if you get beat and he's going to score, let him go. Let him go, but try and stop him first. It's almost impossible to coach that way because the situation changes. The scenario and circumstances of the game change in that play. In those four seconds of that play, it's like that's so hard to try and coach a guy to do that

and explain that to players, but those situations win and lose ball games. And it was, I mean, that's exactly what you practice all the way from OTAs. No Moss. Freeway. You know, let them score freeway. No moss offense. do not score. Get the first down, hit the deck,

or get to the goal line, hit the deck, will center the ball and kick a field goal, win the game. People also want to see the knockout blow. You know what I mean? They don't want to see somebody get choked out for a whole minute and it's just kind of like, you know.

But, I mean, credit to KC. Like, they handled it right. Super Bowl halftimes. We only have a minute and a half left. Super Bowl halftimes are longer. Yep. One of the great plays out of a halftime Sean Payton onside kick.

Oof. The Chiefs are their two best offensive plays out of a 25, 30 minute half-tage. It was, I mean, those- Our two best offensive coaches, use that Super Bowl halftime to pull off wizardry. In the regular season mark, you have six minutes in that room. It's a quick deal.

And a lot of times you're just going back. Okay, what was our opening script? Who wants a fruit slice? Yeah. Our opening 15. What have we not run? Oh, shoot, we forgot that play action. Oh, how did they cover that naked the first time?

Yeah, X that, you know, roll out out. We can't do that because of the way they're playing. we'll counter it with this whatever so when you have that much time i mean you're almost talking through getting a little feedback talking through again looking at the pictures but i mean you have plenty of time you're almost installing a mini game plan of that amount of time especially what you talked about earlier those those comeback motions you know they practice i i just thought those were those were so good because they tried to if you beat somebody on it when a defense beats you beats you on an all-out pressure and they have free runners you're getting it until you block it

If an offense beats you on something and the defense can't cover it, you're going to get it until you stop it. You know what I'm saying? It's like, prove to me you can do this because we also have answers off of something else, right? Like, show me you can beat what we just showed you, and then I'll move on to my next attack or plan of attack, whatever. And so that chess game to me. That's why I love it so much. You did a pretty good job at this broadcasting thing, Marky. Marky, Mark, you really do a good job.

Okay, I want you to take some time off. I'll see after Labor Day. I was going to say you worked very hard. I want you to take six months off. I want you here for the Thursday after Labor Day. Don't listen to the bosses. I just gave you six months off. You guys put in so much time.
