Starting point is 00:00:00 This is an I-Heart podcast. Guaranteed Human. Another podcast from some SNL, late-night comedy guy, not quite. Unhumor me with Robert Smygel and friends. Me and hilarious guests from Bob Odenkirk to David Letterman help make you funnier. This week, my guest, SNL's Mikey Day and head writer, Streeter Seidel, help an a cappella band with their between songs banter.
Starting point is 00:00:23 Where does your group perform? We do some retirement homes. Those people are starving for banter. Listen to humor me with Robert Smigel and friends on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Imagine an Olympics where doping is not only legal, but encouraged. It's the enhanced games. Some call it grotesque.
Starting point is 00:00:42 Others say it's unleashing human potential. Either way, the podcast's Superhuman documented it all, embedded in the games and with the athletes for a full year. Within probably 10 days, I'd put on 10 pounds. I was having trouble stopping the muscle growth. Listen to Superhuman on the IHard Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. A win is a win. A win is a win. I don't care what I'm saying.

Starting point is 00:02:15 We've been talking about the Buffalo Bills a lot. Over the last couple of months, worried about the direction. We'll have one of their stars coming up next. Oh, boy. And you're all fired up on the Jets, but the big story today is the Jets are on hard knocks. Yes, it's not great. Well, of the last 14 teams on hard knocks, they have a combined one playoff win. I don't think it's everything, but I do think distractions are not good in football,
Starting point is 00:02:38 especially on offense where everything's choreographed. I mean, if you're in Buffalo, you're the biggest game in town. You want to keep things pretty tight. I mean, New England had a 20-year dynasty, nothing got out. And so I just, you know, I think noise and distractions historically. We saw Arizona a year ago getting noisy. What happened? We saw Green Bay last offseason getting noisy.
Starting point is 00:02:57 what happened. You know what? San Francisco this off-season's, but a little noisy, it worries me. Given the last decade of futility for the Jets, I'll accept just getting to the playoffs. We lose, that's fine, and yes, I can say we, and we'll talk about the Jets Bill's opener shortly with our guest. Can't wait for that one. Okay, so I saw a story this morning. Yahoo, they listed all the first year college football coaches with the most approve. I don't agree with their premise that Dion Sanders at Colorado is the most approved. It's a bad bad. football program. And if the guy can just make him interesting, I think he's hit a home run.
Starting point is 00:03:32 I don't think he's going to make him good in the near future. I think he's going to make him interesting. His kids are really good quarterback. And I went this morning. I didn't think initially he had no connection to the PAC 12 or the West. I thought it was such a weird fit. And then I remember that weekend, I'm like calling friends. I'm like, Dionne at Colorado.
Starting point is 00:03:49 And then you see him with a cowboy hat. And I'm like, you know what? He's going to get attention. And I went back to the last 10 big college football hockey. liars. Some old, some young. Here are the last 10 biggies. Lincoln Riley, Brian Kelly, Steve Sarkesian, Jim Bo Fisher, Chip Kelly, Lane Kiff, and Jim Harbaugh, Mac Brown. They're all successful. Now, varying degrees of successful. Obviously, Sark is a little on the hot seat this year. But all of those have recruited very, very well. Why? Because recruiting is about getting attention
Starting point is 00:04:21 and creating momentum. And Dion Sanders gets attention and he's going to create momentum. So, It's been noisy. It's been different. But college football is not the NFL. It's not. NFL margins are very tight. The worst team in the league, Houston can play Kansas City and they go to overtime. In college football, you need players.
Starting point is 00:04:40 It's about personality. It's about the coach. So I don't think Dion Sanders has any pressure at all. It has been historically a football program without many wins. I mean, they have not won a bowl game in 18 years. I don't think there's any pressure on Dion Sanders. I think it makes them interesting. By the way, Fox has their first two games on TV, which is really smart,
Starting point is 00:05:03 because I don't think they're a good team in the story will kind of fall apart, eventually year one. But I think in the first two weeks, I'll be watching. I want to see what it looks like. And with that, they have been the talk of this show, it feels like, since the end of the playoffs. Dionne Dawkins, Bill's Offensive Tackle, six years, all with the bills, their highest rated offensive linemen, all six years. Bring it, bring it, bring it.
Starting point is 00:05:27 Bill's nominee for the Walter Payton Man of the Year award. So you get out, you talk, you back it up. So the Buffalo Bills are this quiet team we never talk about. And all of a sudden, there's the Stefan big stuff. Everybody's like, what's going on? So I like Stefan. You too. But I'm an older guy, and I've seen my entire life that receivers are a little bit like the NBA guys in pro football.
Starting point is 00:05:52 They break the huddle first. They're kind of on their own island. You're part of a unit. Yeah. Great wide receivers out there. Give me the ball. I'm covered, throw it up. And the great ones, Devanti Adams and Stefan and Justin, they make the catch.
Starting point is 00:06:06 How concerned are you, though? The gestures, the mini-camp, you a little concerned? Man, listen, I think it's so funny, right, how the world is so much more concerned than their actual teammates. Like, we don't care at all. Because there's nothing to really be worried about. You know, I think for an example, let's say you have a conversation with one of your best friends, and let's say one word is maybe tweaked a little bit, where you're like, oh, did he just say that? Whatever.
Starting point is 00:06:43 Where a group of men that love each other, play with each other, have been around each other for such a long time. And I think that media has taken things so far left where there's really, The only way to go but right. So we have been living on that right side since. And there's no worries at all. Zero worries. You know, Steph is Steph. Josh is Josh and their brothers, you know, and they love each other.
Starting point is 00:07:11 So the mini camp. Can you just explain what happened? I won't even be a nosy media guy. What happened? What happened? From top to bottom, a bunch of guys reported to OTAs for mandatory minicamp. and practiced. We practiced hard. We practiced well. We had a lot of conversations of what we're going to do in this season, and we worked hard at it. It's work. It is work. It is work. It's fun, and it's
Starting point is 00:07:43 football. So the guys were in the same vicinity doing what, and we do. We joke, we have fun. We argue. We compete, and that's just what we do. What happened against Cincinnati? It was such a surprise. Not just you lose. Everybody loses. It's okay to lose. The Chiefs lose.
Starting point is 00:08:03 Everybody loses. It just didn't feel right. Yeah, man. That Cincinnati game was definitely weird. You are definitely right. You go through your ups and downs, and it's sad that we go through a down at a time like that, but we just hit it down at the wrong time.
Starting point is 00:08:23 And I think with the journey that we have been on, we have went through every phase of football that can happen, which will be the recipe for the creation of this season. But Cincinnati, it was just a different feel. Everything just felt weird. I don't want to blame it on anything, but like, you know, like from the first time that we met them, we had a tragedy happen. And then the second time that we played them, it was just like, that energy, it was just very, very, very weird that I don't even know how to explain it. It was just a very, very rare feeling. And I think it was felt through the entire locker room, through the coaching staff, through everything.
Starting point is 00:09:10 It was just a very unique situation that was just... Team was flat. It was a flat. Yeah, it was no charge. It was no electricity, but there was something, but it just wasn't the, The bills. Whatever football gods jumped on our back, they jumped on us. And I mean, they jumped on us from the top turnbuckle, you know, Jeff Hardy style.
Starting point is 00:09:34 So you've been there six years, highest-graded offensive lineman. It's a team that has struggled to consistently run. It's different because you have this player, very much big Ben Cam Newton, where he can kind of be the running game. Yes. But there are times as an offensive lineman, he's ad-libbing the run. It's not a choreograph design run. it does it and it's not a knock on Josh
Starting point is 00:09:56 Lamar does this Josh does this Big Ben did this that Cam's were more planned usually they did some stuff with Cam but I mean sometimes Big Ben he'd move is it hard to establish a consistent
Starting point is 00:10:10 run game when a lot of its ad lived I think great question man that's a great question I think it's hard to create
Starting point is 00:10:20 a strict game plan when your team is filled with with superstars. Like, in playmakers. Like, you got Stefan Diggs. Like, you got Josh Allen. You have Gabe Davis. You have Dawson Knox.
Starting point is 00:10:33 You have... Now you have Kincaid. Great tied in from Utah. Like, Kincaid. Like, our runnerbacks, Cook. We had Singletary. We had Moss. We had all of these guys where it's just like,
Starting point is 00:10:45 the ball can be in a lot of people's hands at one time. And you go in a game and you game plan and then you see a weakness. And you're like, all right, well, we could emphasize. more here, or we could also do it here, or we can also do it here, or we can throw our left tackle a touchdown. Like, there's so many different things that you can do, and I just think that it's a difficult job for whoever is in charge to really figure out where to put that ball at that time. But, of course, like, we want the ball, and Josh, like, like Allen's hand.
Starting point is 00:11:20 Like, who, like, who is the world kidding? Who am I kidding, right? like Josh signed a contract. Josh is a superstar. Josh is on the front cover of Madden. The ball is going to be in Josh's hands regardless because he's the quarterback, but we want him to make the plays. He is our playmaker, and it's on him to figure out where that ball should go.
Starting point is 00:11:39 So, you know, it's definitely difficult. You think it's difficult to be the OC there? Because Josh is so talented, what exactly do you do with him? Man, it's difficult to be in the NFL in charge. It's difficult to have a room full of superstars. It's difficult to have a room full of A plus players all the way across the board because every move could be your best move and sometimes a move could be your worse. Six years with the bills, when was the moment?
Starting point is 00:12:07 Because Josh Allen came from Wyoming, so you probably didn't watch him a lot, small school, you know, didn't dominate there. I watched them against Oregon and Iowa and he had some struggles. He was a big, tall, skinny kid that could throw it a mile. When was the first practice or moment that you were like, oh, you're, Yeah, that's going to work here. That's, was it early? It was, it was definitely early.
Starting point is 00:12:28 It was definitely early. Honestly, it's very weird. I knew that Josh was drastically different when we were in the field house playing basketball. We were in the fieldhouse playing in basketball. Rookie year. And I seen how he shot the basketball and how he dunked and how he handled itself. I said, I'll tell you the truth. I ain't never seen no kid from Wyoming with no.
Starting point is 00:12:53 like with no farm background to play with a basketball like that and I'm from Jersey so like I like that's the that's like the that's like the mecca like like and um it like it like it was like it was like it was different and then when he got in the games and preseason and then when we went through all of our phases when I seen Josh run and when he jumped over the guy in Minnesota I knew the superstar was and was born and it was just on that moment if he was going to feed on it or if he was going to let it crush him. And at that moment, he fed and he feasted. So it was a different vibe.
Starting point is 00:13:32 So Buffalo is a whole different ballgame. Like Green Bay, it's a small market, a little hard to get in trouble. A lot, it's not a huge free agent market. But my wife used to work in HR, and she said the nicest people in America live in Buffalo. What does it like to be a pro athlete in Buffalo? I'm here talking to you, man. and I'm a left tackle. Like, I'm a lineman.
Starting point is 00:13:54 And that's what it's like playing in Buffalo. The fans treat every player as if they're Josh Allen. And it's amazing to go from, like, everybody, like, didn't have that opportunity to go to one of them giant schools, Florida State, Alabama, Auburn, Texas. Like, nobody got that opportunity. Like, everybody didn't. So for me playing at, and I'm speaking on my experience specifically,
Starting point is 00:14:19 for me going to. I mean, you went to Temple. To Temple. Like, we never, like, we sold out the link twice, and that was because we played Penn State and Notre Dame. The majority of the fans there were Penn State and Notre Dame fans. That's right. So I got that feeling twice, and it was the best feeling ever.
Starting point is 00:14:36 And going to Buffalo and feeling how the fans treat their athletes, I was like, bruh, I couldn't even imagine this in college. When you guys got snowed in, local people came with snowblowers to your houses. Listen, the best thing ever. You wake up in the morning and you're like, what the heck is going on? And people are, you got to get to work. Like hot chocolate ready and everything. But these guys got warm croissants and hot chocolate for us in the morning that they are making their house.
Starting point is 00:15:05 And then also shoveling and blowing the snow from in front of our house. But they treat us like kings, man. And it's truly an amazing thing. If anybody haven't been to in Buffalo, they need to, you know, just go over there and feel it because they won't understand it until they feel it. Okay, so now you play the Jets in the opener. It's really, the NFL gave us an all-time. My guy, right?
Starting point is 00:15:31 J-E-T-S, what? Nots, Nots, Nots. Yeah, that's this guy, bro. So, so let's talk about that rivalry because their D-Line is a handful. They are. And they gave your O-line last year some problems, some pushback. The games were close, even though they shouldn't have been because you're a way better team. Right.
Starting point is 00:15:49 Quinn and Williams is a great player I mean they got dudes up front Right They just drafted a kid out of Florida State The year before last The Edge Johnson He's a baller
Starting point is 00:15:58 So tell me about the Jets That D-Line O-line Right Right well your takeaway On that Jets defense So I'm gonna hijack this right now So you just said something
Starting point is 00:16:09 That kind of just struck You said that it was a game That wasn't supposed to be close But it was close Because we were the better team right What makes you automatically think that? Josh Allen.
Starting point is 00:16:20 Josh Allen. So you're talking about our quarterback. So because of our quarterback, you think that our games are just supposed to be drastically easy. In the NFL with 32 other teams that are professional athletes? I'm not saying easy. Okay. But those games were tight. They're in our division and they're pushing to win the championship as well.
Starting point is 00:16:39 But I'm going to tell you, the O line and the D line trenches every single week is a battle. We go through nicks and bruises and. and little things in our body every single week that can make us stronger or weaker by game. The Jets play us extremely hard twice a year. Top tier. I am a huge fan of the Jets and the Dolphins. Those two defensive lines play us the hardest every single year. The Patriots too.
Starting point is 00:17:11 Like I don't want to even sleep on the, on the, uh, pats because my guy Judon is over there and he, and he does a great job. But what I'm saying is the Jets are dogs. They get better every single year. Their team is getting better every single year on depth, chart, and on the field presence. They're getting their swagger. They're doing anything. Big Q is in the middle, and he does his thing, obviously.
Starting point is 00:17:38 Yeah, he's great. He's a great, great player. He's top five, D-Lineman. And as the battle in the trenches, the defensive lines job is to push us back, And the O-line's job is to keep them from pushing us too far back. They're going to push us back at some point. Somebody is going to be just off-grid a little bit, and that's just life. But I think when it comes to wins and losses, if we have more wins and they have more losses,
Starting point is 00:18:06 I think our O-line is definitely doing what we're supposed to do. Okay, so you had 726 pass protections last year, gave up only a couple sacks. So I love talking offensive linemen because I always ask this. Who is a defensive lineman that may not be all pro, but it's a body type. It's a first step. Who's a guy that doesn't get the respect in the NFL that you face and your takeaway is, that dude is a handful. It's amazing.
Starting point is 00:18:33 I've talked to Pro Bowl linemen. They're like, yeah, the guy, the Giants, Olivier Vernon or something. Some guy came on at show. He's like, body type, big feet. It's like gives me nothing but trouble. Underrated guy you face. Oh, man. I don't even think anybody is underrated because we look at everybody high regardless.
Starting point is 00:18:54 Who's the best? The best? Yes. I think it's Vaughn Miller. And I'm going to tell you. Vaughn is just a different, a different dude. He's older. He's skilled.
Starting point is 00:19:02 He has the respect. He has the fear factor being on the field. He has the presence. And then he can bend and be shifty in different ways that everybody can't. But the Jets specifically, like, you could tell the. The Jets strength coach is who the Jets strength coach is, right? And then you can look at the players and be like, oh, they all work out with the same strength coach. Because they all have like that giant body type.
Starting point is 00:19:28 And I'm speaking on the Jets because I think that the Jets defensive line all the way across. It's great. Great. All the way across. Like they have big guys, they have fast guys. They have strong guys. They have guys that push, fight, claw, and do what they do. The Dolphins as well.
Starting point is 00:19:45 Wilkins is really good for them. Wilkins is a guy. You know, I'm not a, I'm not a huge fan. I'm not a huge fan of Wilkins, you know, trench battles, and just trench battle battle stuff. Yeah, talker? Churper, churper, man. Churper, churper on the field, off the field is just a different dude.
Starting point is 00:20:06 Churper. Churper. But respectful, like, I respect ball, and there's a million guys. I don't think that I could pinpoint one, and I'm trying to, think of one, but, but, uh, the, the Bengals, like, kind of caught me with surprise. Um, well, they have a great rush end. Yeah. Yeah. For, for, for sure. Yeah. And they, uh, and they doing what they do. All right. So now, why are you out in Los Angeles? Espes. And for you. Oh, I'm here because I work here. Yeah. Yeah. But now I'm here because. Espe's.
Starting point is 00:20:38 And you. Yeah. I used to work at that company. So, okay. What is. 716 day. 716 day is basically Buffalo's area code. 716. 716. And that's just something that I do every year for the community. I always give back to the community in tenfold because they show so much love to myself. And it's an equally thing.
Starting point is 00:21:05 They show love. I give them love. And even if they didn't, I would still do it. Buffalo has been overly great. We're doing an event at MOK Park where we're giving them. away a bunch of bikes, shirts, food products, and just having a celebration of happiness, good vibes, and a nice turn-up for Buffalo. Celebration of Buffalo. Okay, look at this. I'm looking at your schedule right now. At the jet, what's not really
Starting point is 00:21:29 at the Jets? I mean, there'll be a lot of Bills fans there. Yeah, it'll be a home game for us. Now, you grew up in Jersey, so you'll have your family there. It'll be a home game for us. It'll be a home game for us, for sure. Well, go ahead, J. Mack. Yeah, Deion, I was going to say, I'm just looking at Josh Allen got sacked eight times by the Jets in two meetings last year. Oh my God. That is a beautiful thing. That's a great thing for those guys that can get to the quarterback and still not catch a woman. That is a lot.
Starting point is 00:21:54 And a quick Josh Allen question? He looks like he led the NFL and Red Zone interceptions last year with nine. You didn't need to bring that up. Well, here's my question. Like you've banged on the running game a lot or lack thereof. Well, it's not consistent because I think it's hard because Josh is such a unique place. It's like Lamar Jackson, and people say, well, how, well, he's ad-libbing a lot of the run game. So you can go into a game and say, we're going to do this.
Starting point is 00:22:19 And a lot of times, Josh will make a run that was a pass. So, like, it's Big Ben with the Steelers. Like, a lot of Big Ben's greatest plays were off script. Right. So if you find teams that run the ball, by the way, effectively, Tennessee, because Tannihil doesn't give you a lot off script. Jared Goff, when he had Gurley, didn't give you a lot off script. So if you have a quarterback, the run. game is centered around a singular running back.
Starting point is 00:22:46 Like McCaffrey, by the way, is going to be effective. Why? Because Brock Purdy doesn't run and Garoppolo didn't. When your quarterback runs, everybody's kind of, it's hard to establish a running back dominant run game. Even with Jalen Hertz, they moved off Miles Sanders. Because Jalen's moving on his own. I'm not sucking up. But I do think it's harder when your quarterback's mobile to have a, there's our running back.
Starting point is 00:23:13 gets 28 carries because you go into a play that's second nine, Jalen runs for 11. All right, well, we're not going to, it changes. Literally your play calling changes based on these off-script plays. You're right. Yeah, it's almost. He killed the Jets with his legs last year. He kills everybody with his legs. I like the positive stuff.
Starting point is 00:23:33 Go ahead. Yeah. So the line has come down for Jets Bills. I'm sure, you know, we've talked about it on the show. Billers were three-point favorites now down to one, one and a half. Oh, go either way. But still the... Bills are favored.
Starting point is 00:23:44 But still the favorite. Cool, with a capital F. Go ahead. What else? It should be a great game, right? I'm very excited. Are you going to be there? Can I get the day off Tuesday?
Starting point is 00:23:53 Is it a Tuesday game? It's a Monday night game. It's a Monday night game. It's a Monday night game. I can't fly back after the game. Why not? Yeah, why not? Can you talk to them about the private jet?
Starting point is 00:24:00 Then, uh... I don't, that's none of my business. I think that we should get that done because... For the record. Like, it would be amazing just to walk off with the wind and come right over to you and just shake your hand and just like, be like, see you soon? It should be a great game. I think it's best game of the opening weekend, right?
Starting point is 00:24:14 For sure. Do you guys talk about it? What? Like, it's not just playing the commanders. No. It's not against them, but it's not a game against the NFC. It's your division. Yeah, in division game.
Starting point is 00:24:28 And like I mentioned, it's always bad blood. It's always bad blood. And that's just the way it goes. The jets come out to slice throat. as well as we do. And it's a very, very, very violent game for the trenches. And we understand that it's going to be more than a four-quarter battle every time we touch the field against anybody in our division.
Starting point is 00:24:55 Payton Manning always said there's like four seasons. There's a preseason. There's regular season. There's games against your division. And then there's playoff football. And he's like, and he's like, division games are absolutely Steelers Ravens does not feel like Steelers, commanders. It doesn't. And it won't. And everybody in the building has that intensity up and everybody on the football field's intensity of sky high. And that's why when you see those games,
Starting point is 00:25:25 a lot of different things happen because there's so many emotions that are flying because we know how important those in-division games are during the season. All right. DeAnd Dawkins, great seeing you. Great having on the show. What to go, Dave. I love it here. It's nice. I really do. I love it here, especially when I have a direct enemy. A direct enemy. He's just an agitated. Nah, he is a Jets. Do you have a Jets tat?
Starting point is 00:25:51 No, come on. You for sure have a Jets tattoo, but I would never get a sports tattoo. But like, do you have like one of them little stamp things that like dry off? You think of one of those fan boys? I mean, I'm just making sure, though. I'm just making sure. He kind of, because he only has one team that he ever talks about. That's it.
Starting point is 00:26:09 I mean, he grew up with a Knicks, but he doesn't. care. He grew up with the Yankees. He doesn't care. He literally... Do you have like a fat head at your house? I don't even think I have a Jet's jersey. Like you were probably like the first guy to click ad to cart. No. I'm a broad man. That's what's scary about it. No. I guess what's scary.
Starting point is 00:26:28 That's not. Like I'll just talk trash with Cowherty. Not really. Maybe we're a Jets T-shirt once in a while So I just want to just make just all right. So if and when the bills win, right? What are you like, but like going to do? I think you should come in here with a Dionne Dawkins jersey on and sit there and talk about Dionne Dawkins and the Buffalo Bills and Josh Allen. I like that's the last time we made a bet was about the Seahawks. I had to shave the logo on the side of my head.
Starting point is 00:26:54 See, that's too much. The hairstylist here was like, Jason, you can't do that anymore. I was like, fine, fine. I think the Dawkins jersey does perfect. I will, and you should have like. I'll make sure. Josh Allen digs. The whole game.
Starting point is 00:27:06 The preseason healthy, Dion. Like, Farron Rogers ain't there. We're in trouble. You see what I'm saying? He has no hope in his own team. No hope. No hope. No hope.
Starting point is 00:27:17 Man, but you need to get that tattoo removed, my guy. For sure. Great scene. Great meeting you. Pleasure, man. One more herd? The herd streams 24 hours a day, seven days a week, within the I-Hard Radio app.

Some call it grotesque. Others say it's unleashing human potential. Either way, the podcast's Superhuman documented it all, embedded in the games and with the athletes for a full year. Within probably 10 days, I put on 10 pounds.

What the hell does George Bush got to do with a little camp? Well, you can find out on the Look Back at it podcast.
Starting point is 00:29:19 I'm Sam J. And I'm Alex English. Each episode, we pick it here, unpack what went down, and try to make sense of how we survived it. Including a recent episode with Mark Lamont Hill, waxing all about crack in the 80s. To be clear, 84 is big to me, not just because of crack. I'm down to talk about crack on day, but just so you're just so you.
Starting point is 00:29:39 y'all know. I mean, at this point, Mark, this is the second episode where we've discussed crack. So I'm starting to see that there's a through line. We also have AIDS on the table right now. So, you're finishing that sentence. Yes. I don't think there's a more important year for black people. Really? Yeah. For me, it's one of the most important years for black people in American history. Listen to look back at it on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Mercedes-Benz, the all-electric vehicles. now available the EQE SUV. Feelings all Mercedes, the vehicle's all electric.
Starting point is 00:30:14 Go to MbUSA.com slash EQE-SUV-J-MAC with a news. No, no, no, no, no. Turn on the news. This is the herd line news. Dionne Dawkins, definitely. Brought it. Top five guests we've had this year. Brought it.
Starting point is 00:30:34 And good intel during the commercial break as well. Can't say, we can't give away all the juice. Yes. Sometimes we have. That's super nice guys. Yeah, really good dude. By the way, interesting story. Can I say this for them?
Starting point is 00:30:45 So he's about six, four and a half. He would never have been recruited as a left tackle at Penn State, Alabama, big schools, because they want you to be six-six or up. He goes to Temple. They'll let him be left tackle. And he got rich. And he was telling the story during the break. He's like, the big schools, you've got to be like six, five and a half.
Starting point is 00:31:06 I'm six, four and a half. So he goes at Temple, the main. minute they put me at left tackle, you do a little homework and find out, quarterback and left tackle, that's where it's at. He goes, I was never leaving. But it just goes to show you that half the NFL is undrafted, is that a lot of time there are these height, he's a great example. The big schools ignore him because the big schools are, he could be an interior guy, but they're not going to give him a shot at left tackle. He goes to Temple is allowed to play left tackle, has a chip on his shoulder because the big boy's overlooked him and becomes a pro bowl.
Starting point is 00:31:38 And that is the NFL. A Temple kid who the big schools ignored, Big Ben goes to Miami of Ohio, Aaron Rogers go to Cal, Matt Ryan, how many guys go to NC State and not, and it's a great example. He was not given the left tackle opportunity at Notre Dame, goes to Temple,
Starting point is 00:31:57 and now it's better than 90% of the Notre Dame left tackles they had the last 25 years. Yeah, great stories. Here's a not great story. So Seekwon Barkley, we know him and the Giants, have not come close to a deal. he said playing on the franchise tag is undesirable. According to a report today from Diana Rusini,
Starting point is 00:32:15 if they're not able to come to an agreement, Sequan's availability for week one against the Cowboys is in serious question. Seekwan, it sounds like it's not happening with this franchise tag, Colin. Again, a lot of time before week one. But is this Sequin's side going to the media saying, hey, by the way, we're not doing, don't come to us. Before the deadline here on July 17th with this franchise text, it ain't happening.
Starting point is 00:32:43 It's rough. Here's the good news for the Giants. You return the offensive coordinator, the personnel. He knows the playbook. This is not, and it's also a position. Sequin could be a plug-and-play guy and have three practices. This is not a position. Like, you know, offensive linemen need their work.
Starting point is 00:33:02 They need their reps. Quarterbacks, receivers need their timing and reps. Sequin could, I mean, he's staying in shape. He could report three, four days out and play in the opener. So that's the good news that he'll be fine. But this is, I would have franchised both Seekwon and Daniel. But once you paid Daniel, Seekwan's like, I'm the significantly better player. You're not franchised.
Starting point is 00:33:25 So Sequin is looking at them in the eye and saying, hey, you guys valued him more. You paid him. Good. Now I better get my money. And I'm totally with Seekwon on this. Why didn't they just negotiate with the running back? first. He would be cheaper than the quarterback, obviously. And I think we would agree. Sequel and Barclay, I think he's a better player, more integrals into Giants than Daniel Jones.
Starting point is 00:33:45 Oh, yes. No, no. I would have dealt with a quarterback first, but I wouldn't have caved because you were negotiating against your, there was no market for Daniel Jones. Nobody was going to pay him 40 million. Nobody was going to pay him 30 million. So the bottom line is I would have taken, I would have sat down with a quarterback, got it finished, and once I franchise that, by the way, my takeaway would be, All right, go on the market. It was Josh McDaniels and the Raiders? Were they going to pay him top-to-off? No.
Starting point is 00:34:10 The teams that needed a quarterback, look at the Falcons. They'd rather go Desmond Ritter than Daniel Joe. I mean, they're not even in. Like, this idea that Daniel Jones is good. I mean, Giants fans just, they don't want to believe it. I know they come after us online all the time. They're obsessed with Daniel Jones. I don't know, Brian Daywell.
Starting point is 00:34:27 Good luck with this. Hope Sequin misses which one. All right, let's go to number two. Bill Belichick. He has six Super Bowls in New England. England, put his time with the Patriots be coming to an end. Friends of Belichick's are reportedly worried he could be on the hot seat if things don't improve this season. The organization paid Gerard Mayo to keep him off the coaching market and likely see him as a coach in waiting.
Starting point is 00:34:51 I feel like Mayo was a linebacker there like two weeks ago, but I don't know, Colin. Belichick's final year in New England approaching? You tell me, what would you do if they go 8 to 9 and you own the Patriots? Now, you know he's smart, but he does appear. Now, I, I mean, I asked the question. If you were Robert Kraft, knowing what he did to your organization, knowing he's probably the most intellectual coach of all time, so the Spurs were willing to sit through multiple lousy years with Popovich, and then they reward him once they get the great one.
Starting point is 00:35:25 So I can see Kraft saying, we know Bill's smart. Can you tweak it and say, Bill, my take on Bill is, I like a lot of Bill. I don't like the drafting part of Bill. They went and got three guards, two kickers, slowest offense in the league. What do you do? And the first three picks were defensive guys.
Starting point is 00:35:45 They didn't address their speed issue on offense, which is why Kansas City and Cincinnati and Buffalo and Miami and Baltimore. And that's why they've moved past them. So I think it's, you know, it's so easy. I defended Jim Harbaugh forever when Harbaugh couldn't beat Ohio State. Right. Because I felt there were certain, cultural advantages and historic advantages to Ohio State.
Starting point is 00:36:11 Football is everything. Michigan, it's an important part of the school. And I defended Harbaugh forever, and it took Harbaugh seven years to finally get it right. Not just win 9, 10 games, get it right. So like Belichick, I don't want to rush him out because I know he's great. But I do, I see a stubbornness and a rigidity with some of his offensive decisions. I don't like his lack of embracing Mac Jones. And it's like at some point, we got a couple more cheap ears of Mac.
Starting point is 00:36:43 Like, if you're stunning his growth, you give me no choice as an owner, but to make decisions, like, we got to move on. Like, I, the whole Mac Belichick thing is weird. It just isn't as kumbaya as it should be. They did spend, and I don't think it was great spending, the last two years in free agency. I don't think they spent wisely. but is Belichick to blame or like listen
Starting point is 00:37:07 Well he signs off on all that spending They were drafting in the middle of the first round Matt Jones was pretty much 11 10th I mean but look at their spending Hunter Henry's nice John O'Smith is nice Devonte Parker it's a lot of money Nelson Aguilar It's a lot of money for a lot of average
Starting point is 00:37:24 And it's like maybe he shouldn't be Maybe he should hands off the wheel when it comes to personnel So you're going to tell Belichick arguably, well, not arguing. The best coach in NFL history. I know, it's hard. Great job.
Starting point is 00:37:38 We're just going to have you stick to the exes and knows we're going to bring in a GM. It is very Popovich. Pelopich will laugh at his face. Popovich did the same thing. He moved off Murray. He moved off Kauai. He bottomed out. Like he did.
Starting point is 00:37:50 And he bottomed out and got his guy. So, you know, everybody paints the picture as Kraft and Belichick. It's difficult. It can't be that difficult. It can't be because even when Kraft appears to take A subtle shot at him, it's subtle. He has immense respect for Bill. It's just Bill can be a little bit of, he can be a tad rigid.
Starting point is 00:38:13 You think? And so he's a hard guy to, you know, but Popovich can be a tad rigid, bottomed out. They seem to have a plan, Colin. We're going to bottom out. Let's trade away DeJantan Murray. Let's get, oh, we got the number one pick. Boom. You said eight and nine for the Patriots.
Starting point is 00:38:27 I don't think that's the kind of thing that would get him, like, have massive changes in New England. Like, eight and nine, that would exceed your wish. total of seven and a half from Vegas. If you look at Bill's defense, I mean, the key with the Patriot schedule, and I do not have it in front of me, Belichick owns first and second year quarterbacks. Now, the problem now is Josh Allen, Aaron Rogers, and Tua have been in the league a few years. So he no longer has a Sam Darnold on a rookie deal. So Belichick has thrived, lived off facing kids.
Starting point is 00:38:58 Now he gets Aaron twice, veteran Josh Allen, who he can't stop twice, and Tua with one of the smartest offensive guys. So for years, Bill got five in-division wins against kid quarterbacks. Zach Wilson's not playing this year. So he doesn't get two wins there. So that's the tough part for Bill is to he literally ate for 20 years of young quarterbacks in division. They don't exist. I think the only way you're seeing radical change is that they're like a five-win team. Then it's like, all right, this ain't working. So give me this, if you guys can give me the schedule, you could say it in my ear, Alex. How many first are- Jets in, I think, week four.
Starting point is 00:39:34 But that's Aaron Rogers. That's not Zach Wilson and Mike Smith. I mean, by the way, Bill can't stop Josh Allen. He's in his career. Two, I think, has kind of owned him, right? Yes. I think he swept him. So, you know, here's what the Patriots did.
Starting point is 00:39:47 When they had a chance to eat, they ate. Right? Like, they took advantage of every opportunity. But the world's changed. And the AFC's got all the best quarterbacks outside of Jalen Hertz. And let's be, so look at this. So Jalen Hertz, young but great. Twoa Great. Aaron Great.
Starting point is 00:40:03 Dak a veteran. Derek Carr a veteran. First five weeks. No kid quarterbacks. And by the way, Garoppolo. And then Josh Allen, then two. They don't get a kid until week nine and week 10. So if we give them the win against the Raiders at Josh McDaniels.
Starting point is 00:40:19 Who knows a quarterback. You're looking at probably one in six or one in seven, right? Look at this. Look at all the guys they face. They only face. Well, wait. Sam Howard. It's all old guy.
Starting point is 00:40:28 Russell, Mahomes, Aaron, Roger. Herbert's not a kid anymore. They only face Sam Howell's a kid, Anthony Richardson's a kid, and Daniel Jones. He's not good. He's not a kid, but he, okay, okay, let's just count Kenny Pickett. Oh my gosh, that's schedule. They face three kid quarterbacks, and Belichick will go three and oh against those guys, but they used to face eight, nine of those guys a year, six, five in division.
Starting point is 00:40:54 I mean, look at this, look at this. It's all star quarterbacks and old guys. That could be a five-win team. Well, I'm just saying. There's a reason Vegas has a. and seven and a half. That is a lethal schedule. I thought the bill... So by the way, they play the cults in Germany, so Germany is going to think nothing's changed. Patriots dominate. They'll look great. So week nine and ten, it'll be classic New England.
Starting point is 00:41:18 A young quarterback's just over his skis thrown into coverage. That schedule is just, you're not facing any quarterbacks that are going to be literally see ghosts. No, I mean, it's all old guys or great guys. Even the guys that are young, Justin Herbert, are, oh, good. And even the old guys you would say is Derek Carr, Garapolo, been around forever. They've seen every coverage. It looks like December.
Starting point is 00:41:49 So they feel it's Tomlin, Reed, Peyton, and then Josh Allen and Amer Rogers. Bruegel. Yeah, that's a five or six-winning team. Did we just change your mind on them? I think you just did. All right. Final story. Let's go with it. Listen, more Jets coverage. Sorry, Dion Dawkins.
Starting point is 00:42:04 So there was a recent poll by ESPN that had Sauce Gardner as the second best corner in the NFL. So two-time Super Bowl champ, Asante Samuel, I'm sure you remember him, took issue with that tweeting, the New York media will take your career to another level. So here's a battle online for the FS1 viewers. Sauce Gardner shot back, the tweet literally says those were the rankings from players, execs, scouts, and coaches. I'm trying to figure out why you keep bringing up New York Media. Sauce Gardner win. And then Asante Samuel came after him, just like the Pro Bowl votes used to be.
Starting point is 00:42:36 Yes, you have the best media behind you. I challenge you to turn some of those past breakups into interceptions this year. What a loser. Come on, Asante, Sam. Are you kidding me? Sauce, I challenge myself to do the same thing, along with my coaches. I don't need you challenging me. All this sub-tweeting you've been doing?
Starting point is 00:42:55 Safety, bro. Sauce's pretty good on the old Twitter machine. Asante Samuel looking for work somewhere? I mean, what are you doing? Sauce is pretty good. I got to take a break. J. Mack, got to take a break. Live in L.A., The Herd.

Tonight, 730 FS1, you better watch USA Men's National Team against Panama. We've crushed them through the years. dominated them. It's a lot of our backup players, but if you are starting to kind, you're on the fence about soccer, these are our backups because a lot of our best players
Starting point is 00:46:39 are overseas playing, you know, for bigger teams and more lucrative opportunities. This is the fastest United States men's national team we've had. The speed, our ability, we're a much more offensive-minded, more clever, more depth, more speed, more talent. Alexei Lawless, one hour from now, this is the most excited. I've always been like a, not a cynic, but I've always been a bit of a cooler at the table.
Starting point is 00:47:11 Like I always say, guys, we're not that gifted. This is the first time in my life that I think we have a half a dozen players who could be really high-end international players. And they're all kids. So years and years and years of building and developing and our academies and recruiting, we got some dudes. And so tonight, United States men's national team takes on Panama. We've had some success through the years. But watching our guys face a little adversity against Canada coming back and winning, this one's special.
Starting point is 00:47:48 This one's different. The eye test. You cannot watch this team and watch us three years ago. It is different. Some of these young guys are our backups now. We have depth. In my life, we've never had any depth on our national team. We've had players I like, a Clint Dempsey, a Donovan.
Starting point is 00:48:06 We've never had any depth. Our second team is rolling through people. Very exciting, JMAC. Extremely exciting. Huge. Huge match tonight. I think it's tonight. 730 FS1.
