In for Colin Cowherd. We've got two more hours of great sports talk. Heading into your weekend. Big college hoops weekend. Indiana, Purdue. Gonzaga. St. Mary's, it's a big one. Arizona, Arizona State.

I mean, potentially, Arizona State wins it. That could be a big one. So I've got some good college chips. We continue to watch all this NFL news, including the story of the day, which is that the athletic has a story out where three different writers, one of which joined us last hour, said unequivocally, Russell Wilson wanted John Schneider, the GM, and Pete Carroll, the head coach, fired and instead he got traded.

So we'll continue to react to that. Plus, more news on a Lamar Jackson front. Do the Ravens acquiesce? Or do they trade him so that somebody else acquiesces and gives him a five-year fully guaranteed contract like Deshaun Watson has? That we don't know, that we'll figure out. Last night, a good night if you're a Laker fan.

Now, full disclosure, the Warriors didn't have Andrew Wiggins and didn't have Steph Curry. The Lakers did have Anthony Davis. He only played 26 minutes. They did have LeBron James, didn't shoot the ball particularly well.

And they did have Malik Beasley, who you want to talk about announcing your Lakers presence with authority. Seven threes, 25 points in 26 minutes. Additionally, Mo Bamba came out the bench and gave them 10 and 13 boards and two threes. You know, it's one of those games where you're like, wow, I had no.

The Lakers shoot 16 of 30 from three. That's going to win you most games. You know, you shoot 53% from three in the NBA. You're going to win most games. But part of it is also the personnel that they put around LeBron, put around Anthony Davis, and allowed them to be successful. Part of it is the Warriors who aren't great in their own right right now. And the thought is if they get healthy, but they're not healthy,

you don't have Steph, you don't have Andrew Wiggins. It's a completely different team. And after halftime, it was all Lakers. All Lakers. What does it mean? I don't know. I mean, DeAngel Russell got hurt spraying his ankle. And as we pointed out to you yesterday, like look at this upcoming schedule.

You'll know very early on. That's a good win, a good step. They got Dallas on Sunday, Memphis on the road on Tuesday. Oklahoma City on the road on Wednesday. And then they return home for Minnesota and Golden State, Memphis, Toronto, New York. Like none of those teams are best team in the league, although Memphis, I'm sure, will be laying in wait for them. That said, still, pretty talented teams you have to play.

And pretty big challenge you're going to have to take on if you want to get back into the play-in-game mix, let alone the playoff mix. Yeah, I don't know. Like, I think that what you're seeing now and what you saw last night, and again, we have to mention no staff, no Andrew Wiggins, completely different team. But it's a little bit of what we were saying in the first half of the year, which is, like, LeBron's scoring is fine, but that doesn't actually win you games. And at this point, his career, in order for him to be at his best, he's always needed

guy, everybody needs guys around you, but he does. He needs other guys to pick up the slack. He is not the same dude. He's not the same dude offensively. He's definitely not the same dude defensively. And that doesn't mean that he's Peyton Manning last year, nine touchdowns, 17 interceptions, but all the scoring he did in the first half of the year

didn't account to wins. Didn't help win any games. And that's what he's always been about is winning the games, not to try and win the scoring title. That had shifted the past year and a half. we'll see if last night, and some of it was, he just didn't shoot the ball well last night, but we'll see if last night is indicative of how he wants to play going forward, which is let other dudes win the game for you.

Because when you're in your late 30s, you can't be that guy every night. You're that guy once every four or five nights. But the juxtaposition with the Lakers, and look, there's new energy when you have new guys, and the new guys come in and they're wearing a Laker uniform. That's still a big thing. Remember, all these players, they grew up watching like Kobe was there

was their goat before it was LeBron they grew up idolizing playing for the Lakers so Malik Beasley gets a shot and he took advantage of it but we'll see if that effort is replicable maybe the story should be

what kind of shape of the Warriors in like can the warriors get healthy can they get out of the play in game can they get in the real playoffs and what do they look like when they're fully healthy. It's a weird world, isn't it? It's a weird world when we're talking about two teams

that reputation-wise, name-wise, you believe should be at the top of the league, yet even now after the win last night, the Lakers aren't in the play-end game, and after lost last night, the Warriors are still buried into that play-in series which only two teams survive. No mention of the nuggets,

no mention of the clippers, no mention of the kings, obviously who've had a kind of a gaudy record. No mention the Pelicans or any of these other teams. Nope, just Lakers. To some extent the clippers because they signed Russell Westbrook, but nothing of the Golden State Warriors. But if the Warriors, I mean, they continue on this trend.

It's a yikes. It's a yikes. They were not good last night, but they obviously didn't have their dudes. And everything looks different when you got Steph. And everything looks different when you have Andrew Wiggins. They have a soft spot. in their schedule.

Houston at home, Minnesota at home, Portland at home, clippers at home, Pelicans at home, before they come back to L.A. next week. My,

the expectation, it's reasonable expectations. Like, all right, the lawyer's going to pick it up now. But last night was not a night they picked it up.

Jay Stu had a interesting morning with my dog this morning. Yeah? Okay, yeah. So I have two dogs. One's a sheep-a-doodle. And the sheep-e-doodle.

Sheepedoodle is generally as well-behaved a dog as you're ever going to find. My daughter Harper, she takes credit for training him. And he's pretty well trained. You know, he's got some tricks. He generally's behaved. You know, he likes to try and be big dog at the dog park sometimes. But the second anybody else parks at him, like he's good. He runs away.

He's fine. Doesn't submit, but he's not the alpha he thinks he is. But he's not a, he's not traditionally a counter surfer. He doesn't like, like, like I got milk. milk bone, dog bones, he won't touch him. He's not a treat guy. So I found this, like these, they're made of sausage and chicken treats at Costco nonetheless. So it's a big bag of them.

Like, there are no small bags of Costco as any of us who are Costco people know. And he likes them. And it's been great because I take them and I let them run at the park and then, you know, you whistle over and they get a little treat. And all of a sudden now they look like the most perfectly trained animals ever. And this guy's been all over. So I've had the sausages for, I don't know, probably a week, but only broke out the bag the last couple of days.

So normally he sleeps on my bed. Oh, no, I see where this is going. No, at the foot of my bed. No, it's not as bad as you think. And the other guy, he sleeps outside sometimes, sometimes on the bed, sometimes in his crate, sometimes the foot of the bed. Got a little animal kingdom going on, cats in as well. I couldn't find the dog last night.

I got to get up early at the herd. I got a basketball show to do. I got to take my daughter down to her barn. I got stuff I got to do. I got to get in good night's sleep. I can't worry about what they're doing or where they're doing. So I get up this morning and, well, he's chipper. He's chipper.

And I'm like, where was he all night? I go into my kitchen and in my cabinet has been opened up, is not left open, has been opened up. And on the floor there is an empty bag of those treats. and thankfully the little silicon tab that was designed to keep them fresh. I think he ate 90 of them. Oh, my goodness.

I'm not kidding. He ate 90 of them. I was doing the math. There's 100 in there. I would take out like two or three at a time and I'd break him into little pieces and do a little training thing or whatever. I think he,

and like he probably had a little bit of help, but he ate a lot of those little sausages. I just can't imagine what's going on in his stomach. I was going to say, man. Did you also at Costco get the little doggy bags that you're going to need a lot of over the couple days? No, I have those as I have those as well. I have those as well.

90 baby sausages. 90. Have you, have you Googled potential harm of eating them in mass quantity? No, you know, I had once we had a basset hound, we were in Connecticut, and my kids were little. And we all went out trick-or-treating, and we came back, like, we're done. Just leave the big bucket out front. Leave a sign. Please take one. Whatever. All the kids are gone. We're good. Right. So it's like 10, 30, 11 at night. And I hear some rustling out front.

And I'm like, the hell's going on with these kids? Just take the candy and go. Don't care anymore. I look down and there's my Bastetown. Way against his tail, he's got chocolate all over his face. So you know the common freak out, right? You think the dog's going to die from chocolate. It would have taken like 40 pounds of chocolate to kill this dog. So my dog, he slept like a baby. She slept like a baby. She was great. So, no, I don't think you can die from excessive sausage eating. But there was a little bit of cannibalism there, not knowing where the sausage actually

came from, Costco meat. But that was, that was impressive, wasn't it? That's 90 of them. Odell Beckham Jr. Jr.? Is this stuff like that? Yes. Odell Beckham Jr. Jr. All right.

Isn't there a show, I think there's even a podcast, that tells you how things work, like how things are made. Is that right, Jason Stewart? Like, there's a good podcast like that, isn't there? How things are made? How it works? Yeah, like, there's a show actually called How Things Are Made.

And I think it's fascinating. I think the same could be said, and this is my level of interest or even fascination, if you will. with sports and how it works. You know? And I'll give you an example. Okay.

So all reports are that Quinn Snyder is set to become the next head coach of the Atlanta Hawks. Right. I mean, like, whoa, a lot of change happening with the Hawks, right? That's true. There's a lot of change happening with the Hawks. What's behind that change? Well, you know, Travis Schling could come in. He'd been there, general manager, and he kind of, got kicked sort of upstairs, sort of to a consultant role, and they brought in Landry Fields.

Landry Fields, of course, former player, you know, played at Los Alamos High School, Stanford, played in the NBA. And then he got his start as a scout in the Spurs organization. And then he was the GM of the Austin Tereros in the Spurs organization. and his first order of business was to acquire Dejante Murray. And you're like, huh, why would he go get Dejante Murray? Well, when he was scouting as a West Coast scout, he scouted Dejante Murray, and then they drafted Dejante Murray.

He's a believer. He's called a rabbi in the room, a guy who is a fan of Dejante Murray. So now, when he need a head coach, who do you try? turn to. You're a young general manager. You just got the job. You need somebody who has experience, but also you want to have those ties to the Spurs family. Oh, hey, Quinn Snyder once upon a time was head coach of the Austin Toreros. It all makes sense. This is how business works. This is how things are built. People you work with that you trust, that you like, that you respect. Okay, that you're like, man, if I ever got a job, I want that guy to work with me. It makes a whole hell of a lot of sense.

Is that how it works? Let's find out. Joe Varden joins us. He covers the NBA for the athletic. Joe, is it as simple as Landry Fields kind of putting in Spurs Southeast, and that's what they're doing? Well, Doug, you laid that out a lot deeper and smarter than I would.

What I would have said is Kyle Korber is now a member of their front office, and he's got like a real job there. And Quinn Snyder is arguably, his favorite non-family member on this earth. And so when I first saw that Quinn was being mentioned and as a possible, you know, target, I just immediately went there. You know, all the conversations that I've had with Kyle over the years, he just raves about him. And so, you know, I would, I'm not just saying this.

I think you're right. I think what you said is correct. But I would just add that there's certainly another voice in that front office. that would be a major proponent of Quinn Snyder, and that is Kyle Corber. I agree. I mean, like, look, again, if you want to get into true details,

Landier Fields, one of the other guys that's been a candidate is Miles Simon. They are incredibly close. Miles was his workout coach. In his last couple years in the NBA, they've remained close as well. It's still very, very close. We actually, we all play, believe it or not,

in an adult league men's league team in Irvine. This is like, I don't know, six, seven years ago, right? I mean, total ringers, like, you know, I'm playing with, with former NBA players in an adult men's league. It was, it was a lot of, it was a lot of, what's this mean for Trey Young?

Trey, he, I mean, he's, he's had some trouble there. And I think he's been exposed a little bit. Lack of leadership, allowing certain situations to get to, him.

I don't want to say not a winning player. It's too early to say that, but needs to be around in an environment where things like that are taught. And so, you know, I don't

know. I don't know how great of the thing this is for him, for Trey, Quinn Snyder. I mean, maybe. You know, Quinn's great and had a lot of success in the small market there.

In Utah, a lot of years, a lot of players rave about him. But I think, you know, this is certainly, I don't want to say quite crossroads moment for Trey, but just,

you know, he came into the league. He was so good. They had a great run, you know, two years ago in the playoffs. And I think some of the bloom has come off the roads a little bit.

And so, you know, I think, If you're in Trade's corner, you hope that this is a reset for him, and he gets the experiences that he needs to finish off. Okay, help me out, or maybe help others out. Like Joe Varden covers the league for the athletic. Doug Gottlieb in for Collins to heard, Fox Sports Radio, IHeart Radio app.

Look, I've heard the exact same thing. But what you don't hear is like, okay, so I don't get what it is. Like, he's a great passer, an incredible shooter, right? he puts up the numbers wise, I'll tell you he's awesome. Obviously, it's been well documented going back to when he's in Oklahoma. He's not a particularly good defensive player, but it doesn't feel like he's as bad as maybe reputation. But what is it in terms of personality that hasn't gotten the true buy-in despite the fact

that, you know, when, I mean, the perfect example is what they did in New York that year, what they do in New York every year. When people call Trey Young out, he usually drops 40. on him. What is it that hasn't endeared him to teammates or maybe even the front office there? You know, Doug, I don't want to come on this national show with many, many, many, many listeners and say something that I don't know to be true. Like, I am not in that locker room. So I can't sit here and say, well, he is a malcontent and he is not a leader. That's what you hear. But you don't know.

Like, I mean, there are all kinds of players who bristle at head coaches and get into it with head coaches. He seemed to do that with Nate McMillan. But there is just something about the way that the winners carry themselves, like their attention to detail, their attention to their teammates in the locker room. And the way they kind of foster an environment in which either other people, players will play for him or he can show that he would play for others. And just based on what I have been told, that has not been happening in Atlanta. But again, you know, I don't live there.

I haven't spent a ton of time around the Hawks. So I can't levy any direct accusation like that. I mean, the number of times that I've spoken with him personally have gone well and, you know, I've appreciated its time. But that's it. And I've heard that, you know, from some high-ranking people, you know, inside and outside of Atlanta, those are the characteristics or the traits that have shown to be lacking over the last year and a half. Before you're in, before you're with the athletic, obviously you covered the calves for a long time.

Joe Varden, our guest here in the herd. I want to ask you about LeBron and what happened with Russell Westbrook. All reports are LeBron recruited Russell Westbrook to be part of the Lakers. And then something just wasn't right because Russell wasn't having a bad year. He was coming off the bench and that seemed to be going okay. Obviously Anthony Davis's health was an issue. LeBron statistically, offensively playing well. But there was something wrong with the chemical makeup of that team.

And as much as they got some very good assets in return, Some of it felt like they're just trying to get rid of Russell Westbrook. Any idea what really went on that led to such a fissure between those two? Yeah. Yeah. I think that the personal fissure goes back away. It transcends this year. And, you know, I think at some level, the thing with LeBron is, for many, many years of his career,

he has been accused of being or playing de facto general manager. And by and large, those accusations were misguided, misplaced. He got too much credit for that. But with the Russell Westbrook saying, it was true. It was true. I mean, he and Anthony Davis and Russ all basically cooked up this plan to get him to Los Angeles and took it to the general manager there, Rob Plains. lanka and um you know when stars of that caliber uh come to you and say this is what we want i mean

i guess he could have overridden them and and pulled the trade for yield and turner that he had but but i don't think that he felt he was in a position to do so so he brings in russ and you know lebron gets who he wants but then he sees that this was a mistake just because the the the style that Russ plays is not conducive to LeBron's style, and especially at this stage of his career. It wasn't a good fit, and LeBron knew that he was at some level culpable for this and was upset that the Lakers couldn't or wouldn't bail him out from it and make changes last year. And so I think that's where the animosity started.

uh, Russ did publicly accept his, his move to the bench, um, and he has played hard, you know, I don't, I mean,

I guess you can argue that, but, but he has showed up every night. He played. Um, he did what he was asked, uh, by and large,

um, you know, I, I, I think what really sent them down the wrong path is, is, is toward the end when LeBron started,

you know, openly campaigning for, for a trade of, for Kyrie because everybody knows there was only one salary. You know, I think it's from the realization on LeBron's end that bail him out from it. And then sort of his sort of the trade happens is if Russ is moved. Russ is no dummy. It led to resentment, which I think you understand.

The Dallas move. I think we would, I mean, look, if you look at it in the, outside looking in, you're like Dallas wasn't going anywhere. It's a no lose for them. Unless they give Kyrie a four-year extension. What's the likelihood of a two-year? What's the likelihood of a four-year extension there? Well, yeah, I mean, you have to look at the assets that Dallas gave up and you just, I mean,

I'm not the first person to say this. You just assume or believe that for what they, gave up to get Kyrie that they have a long-term plan. But, you know, Mark Cuban has always been a star chaser. There's no doubt about that. And he has wanted to pair some dynamic player with Luca. And so now he's got his guy and he can pay Kyrie more than anyone. He has his bird rights.

So that's all great. What is fascinating to me is that the extension, didn't happen immediately or that there hasn't been any confirmation by anyone involved that this is something that they're heading towards and that is one of the things that led me to write about two weeks ago that I thought Kyrie would ultimately end up on the notion that kind of put that to very far in the playoffs or Kyrie and Luca don't match or whatever the case and something doesn't get done there then you have to start having what he wants and there's like a cup set for maybe the Blazers

who already have a little... Otherwise, they're all in various stages of rebuilding. None of them are markets that Kyrie would be interested in. The Lakers couldn't pay him the full for each other lately and say they wanted to play together. And LeBron kind of stuck up for Kyrie when Kyrie was having this trouble over the video. And Kyrie publicly apologized a couple years ago

for how he left Cleveland and what he pulled with LeBron that could line up for that reunion, but to be paid second star there. And paying Kyrie, by the way, gives them at some levels some security in case Luca decided. It makes a lot of sense for that. Okay, help me out. The Warriors didn't look great last night.

But they also don't have Wiggins and they don't have Steph Curry. Are we seeing the end of this run? So I saw Steph here in Cleveland, whenever that was, whenever they came through. And he didn't play that night. and so we got a chance to talk. And he, you know, this is something you would say anyway, but he was talking about how he does think because of who they are and what they've all been through together,

that if he can get back healthy and they get just a little bit of time to play together, that they have enough continuity and a history together, that they could make a run, that they have the talent to do it. And they have shown over the last decade that they deserve that benefit of the doubt. So I don't want to rule them out. You know, steps close to coming back, and he could catch fire. But it has been a rotten season there for them. I mean, they are 29 and 30.

They're tired. You know, they've been together for so long. It just hasn't gone well. And they can't catch a break. They're one of the worst teams in the league on the road. That's been draining. You know, they went overseas to Japan and the preseason, and they come back, and Draymond punches Jordan, and everything just kind of is unraveled from there.

So you wonder, for this, they are in absolute dynasty, the latest dynasty in the NBA. But when you get to the end of that, it means you've been through so much together, like, how much more can you take? And it's like, you wonder all the water they've taken on all year with the injuries and the controversy and the losing on the road. if that will be too much to get to make one more deep playoff. Joe, awesome stuff. Really appreciate you.

This is the herd line news. Doug, according to Jeremy Fowler of ESPN, the Ravens have offered Lamar Jackson a contract that would pay him upwards of $50 million a year. And reportedly, Jackson has turned it down because it's not fully guaranteed. I guess the contract offered not only for $50 million a year, but it has a guarantee of $133 million. Your reaction to this? I'm not surprised in anyway. You obviously for people to know Jason proves my show

Jason how long ago did I say Lamar wants to Deshawn Watson plus one contract Yeah I think it was shortly after Deshawn Watson got his contract Correct I mean look he's and and maybe he gets it Not getting it in Baltimore He's just not too well-run an organization they They understand I've talked to NFL people and every one of them said this deal would have been

done if he had an agent. And I think one of the reasons he doesn't have an agent is he doesn't want anybody telling him like, what are we doing here? Like we can get all of this money. We just have to be a little bit more creative about it and put in some bonuses. They're not going to give you the five-year guarantee. That was a contract that was widely panned by the rest of the league. Now, maybe there are people that think, hey, Arthur Blank in Atlanta, he'll pay whatever.

They need a superstar. Lamar Jackson's a superstar. They give them a five-year guaranteed contract. But between... Look, here's the part. In the history of the NFL, it doesn't really matter if you're better than the guy that gets the bigger contract.

Usually it's whatever the contract before you, that kind of sets the bar. The problem is we've had several other contracts since that contract. And none of them came anywhere near the $230 million guaranteed that Deshaun Watson. Jackson's getting. Secondarily, you want a fully guaranteed contract when you've missed

10 the last 22 games that the Ravens have played? When you miss seven games most of the past two seasons? Why would they do that? I'm all for paying Lamar Jackson, the going rate, but the going rate isn't the one outlier contract. Doesn't surprise me at all. Well, according to Lamar, you obviously don't love Lamar then. I don't love Lamar. And you know what? Colin says this all the time on this show. Why was something leaked? So this kind of speaks to a greater picture here, Doug.

Who benefits from this leaked information? This obviously doesn't put Lamar in a great light. You think it's coming from the team. You combine this with, I think it was Mike Sandow's report yesterday about anonymous sources thought Lamar could have played towards the end of the season, and he didn't. People were stunned in that front office. locker room. You wonder why these stories are being reported?

I personally think it's the Ravens trying to tell the fans the reason why Lamar Jackson is eventually playing elsewhere. That we did everything in our power and it just wasn't going to work because of Lamar. Potentially, yeah, I don't think it's this year. I don't think it's this year. I think it's in two years. They got the franchise tag. People are like, well, he's a free agent. No, he's not. They want to franchise tag him. There's no negotiation. that's what they're going to do. So I don't think, I don't believe that to be the case. Like they went out and got a new offensive coordinator in Todd Munkin.

I don't. And again, I liked their old offense. He won the MVP in that offense. The offense wasn't the issue. But you went and got Todd Munkin and you want to build this offense around him. I don't think you're dealing him this year. On to another quarterback, ESPN also reporting. that Jimmy Garoppolo is going to ask for a lot of money.

I guess if you take out Aaron Rogers and Derek Carr, maybe Garapolo might be the third most sought after quarterback this offseason, if you play in all those factors. But Garoppolo, reportedly, is seeking a contract that measures up to his skill set and ability. Are you buying that? Will anybody pay him that? Doug. Well, what is his skill set and ability?

I guess that's a sliding scale. All these guys, I mean, this is the thing. And we all have this in business, right? When you have this fear of being in that middle area, right? You just got to be careful not to overvalue yourself. Daniel Jones, hey, I want $45 million. Well, that's great, Daniel. I don't want to give you $45 million.

You know, go fish. Go on the open market. do we really think Look, when the league basically has There's two courses of action that have shown to work And for the most part, this is the one The one that works the best is

Get a rookie quarterback And while he's on that contract You can load up your team with talent And then when his, it comes around For his contract time, if he's good enough You give him a deal And you're going to have to do with Kansas City It was draft really well, young players

You're going to have some holes in what you do If not, you let him walk. Let him walk. So Garapolo's in a weird area. His window is really up until the NFL draft. Because once the draft comes around, you're going to draft a quarterback, and you're going to think that guy is going to be the next young quarterback. And the other course of action is to obviously draft a star.

Garoppolo's not a star. I don't think Derek Carr is... I think Derek Carr is... What's the difference in Derek Carr and Kirk Cousins? Not much. And even if... Aaron Rogers is talented as he is as good as he is. One, you're not going to happen for long.

And two, as we know, Aaron Rogers can be an expert on bad body language because he has it when anything goes wrong. So I just, I would be very cautious of saying I want some huge payday. When the league is now building around guys on a rookie contract and the draft still hasn't taken place, yes, a lot of teams need a quarterback. But look what Washington's doing. They're like Sam Howl. He's good enough. We'll build around him. We'll load up on talent.

two Pacific, plus we got an hour live podcast at the end of it, is, look, I actually talked to two GMs who interviewed him, and they both had very similar reviews. He is in the NFL, seen as a guy who he's not, he can run a little hot and cold with people. He can come out people a little strong. And I understand that when he says the word accountability, all of us, like, man, that's what's really needed on teams. The problem is, and this has happened with former Patriots guys,

like if you walk in trying to hold everybody accountable before anybody actually knows what you can do, like Bill Belichick gets away with it, but that's because he's been there for 25 years. It wasn't always the way in which he'd run. rules now, and it doesn't always go over well. But what I was told was, like, just in comparison to others, there wasn't a great plan.

And actually, if you listen to his press conference, it was very vague there. He's just kind of a vague guy in terms of what he wants to share with what he wants to do. And in comparison to other candidates, that's one of the things that was missing. then in combination with nobody actually knew what he did in Kansas City, then no one actually knows what his plans are going to be. It didn't align with a lot of these people. But here's the thing. Of course you think the world of a guy when Andy Reid

or when Pat Mahomes comes out and says great things about him. But if Andy Reid wanted to keep him at the same job he has with the commanders, he could keep him. Everyone who follows Kansas City says Matt Nagy is the next guy there. Another day, Matt Nagy's the next guy there. Not Eric Bion to me. that tells you I need to know, doesn't it?
