Starting point is 00:00:00 This is an I-Heart podcast. Guaranteed Human. Another podcast from some SNL, late-night comedy guy, not quite. Unhumor me with Robert Smygel and friends. Me and hilarious guests from Bob Odenkirk to David Letterman help make you funnier. This week, my guest, SNL's Mikey Day and head writer, Streeter Seidel, help an a cappella band with their between songs banter.
Starting point is 00:00:23 Where does your group perform? We do some retirement homes. Those people are starving for banter. Listen to humor me with Robert Smigel and friends on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Imagine an Olympics where doping is not only legal, but encouraged. It's the enhanced games. Some call it grotesque. Others say it's unleashing human potential. Either way, the podcast's superhuman documented it all, embedded in the games and with the athletes for a full year.
Starting point is 00:00:52 Within probably 10 days, I'd put on 10 pounds. I was having trouble stopping the muscle growth. Listen to Superhuman on the IHard Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. On the Look Back at it podcast. For 1979, that was a big moment for me. 84 was big to me. I'm Sam J. And I'm Alex English. Each episode, we pick a year, unpack what went down, and try to make sense of how we survived it.
Starting point is 00:01:17 With our friends, fellow comedians, and favorite authors. Like Mark Lamont Hill on the 80s. 84 was a wild year. It was a wild year. I don't think there's a more important year for black people. Listen to look back at it on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Thanks for listening to The Heard podcast. Be sure to catch us live every weekday from 12 to 3 Eastern, 9 to noon Pacific on Fox Sports Radio and FS1.
Starting point is 00:01:43 Find your local station for the Heard at Fox Sports Radio.com or stream us live every day on the iHeartRadio app by searching Heard. Now let's get this party started. You're listening to Fox Sports Radio. Here we go, our two live in L.A. It is The Heard. Wherever you may be and however, you may be listening. Thanks for stopping by today. So I was watching the game last night, Jay Mack, Jason McIntyre, alongside.
Starting point is 00:02:13 And I was going to watch Celtics Knicks. It wasn't a national TV game, but Jalen Brown was out, so it's not the same, right? And I've said before, you have a right not to play and I have a right not to watch. So when Jalen Brown's out, I don't care. The other night I was going to watch Katie and the Sons against Janice and the Bucks. Neither one played. You choose not to play. I choose not to watch.
Starting point is 00:02:35 So, anyway, anyway. But I did watch the fourth quarter, very good of Philadelphia and Miami. And I'm sitting there watching it. And it's in Philly, and I'm saying Miami's going to win this game. Miami's got very good, a great coach, maybe the best coach in the league, Spolstra. Great culture. tremendous defensive team. And Miami, if it's close, they win.
Starting point is 00:02:58 They're a great close game team. And that's because the culture, it's defense. So it was a great example of why I don't trust Philadelphia. And I said this yesterday. I don't trust Philly in big spots, close games. I don't trust them in the playoffs. There's no reason to. Why would I?
Starting point is 00:03:14 I think MB's a great talent. Why would I trust them in the playoffs and harden shrinks in the playoffs? And so Miami won the game last night. And it was a go-either-way game. they went to Jimmy Butler three straight times. He had the shot of the year in the NBA. I think this is it right here. Yeah, I think that's the shot of the year in the NBA.
Starting point is 00:03:33 Then he came down, he slipped in a turnover, and then he got to the free throw line, whereas M. Bden Harden, last three possessions, 0 for three with a turnover. So my point is, this M.Bed Hardin thing, the fans love it. I don't trust him in the postseason. I think M.B. is a remarkable talent,
Starting point is 00:03:51 but a little flaky. Hardin's very flaky. They got a good shot, by the way, for the win, but clanked it missed, and it was a classic example. So I thought this morning, these are my 10 favorite duos currently in the NBA. Tandom's duos. Favorite? Okay. No, I think they're the best.
Starting point is 00:04:09 The best. And I'm considering everything. This is strong. So number 10 would be Luca Kyrie. They play no defense. None. But offense is about 70% of the league. Luca leads the league in scoring.
Starting point is 00:04:22 Kari is shooting. over 50%, so they're just dynamic, they're magnetic offensively. Huge is, I don't know if either is a great teammate, and they don't play a lick of defense, they'd be 10. Nine, I'd put Kauai and Paul George. Now, Kauai is starting to play better. They're both excellent defensive players and good offensive players. I would take them in a series over Dallas because they can make stops and Dallas won't.
Starting point is 00:04:48 I mean, Kauai's been on seven all defensive teams. again, you never know if he's quite ready to play. If Kauai played the nightly basis, I could have these guys in the top three. But I never, he's nonverbal, he's not a leader. He's just a basket maker and a stop, you know, get a stop guy. But I put them in nine. Number eight, Donovan Mitchell and Darius Garland. Donovan's having a great year.
Starting point is 00:05:10 Again, I get more consistent play from them because I think they're going to be ready to go. Donovan's average in 27 a game, not much of a defensive player. Garland's a rising star. He's fantastic. I think Cleveland's a year away. Mobley keeps growing, but I love watching. Great, great, one of the better watches in the NBA. I put Donovan Mitchell, Darius Garland, at 8.
Starting point is 00:05:31 Seven, Yokic and Jamal Murray. Everybody freaks out, but I don't trust Jamal Murray in a big spot. The average is 20 a game. Yokic is obviously the great point center. Some Bill Walton qualities, one of the great passing big men. I know I should trust this team. I don't. Some guys are great regular season players, not great postseason players, but I would put them a strong one.
Starting point is 00:05:55 Jamal Murray's an average two. I would put them at seven. Number six would be LeBron and AD, but AD's already missed 24 games this year. Now, LeBron's hurt. If healthy, you could argue they're number one or two, but they're never healthy. AD leads the league in rebounds, tremendous defensive player, but he's already missed 24 games. It's just a matter of when, not if he'll get banged up, and LeBron's out for two weeks. Number five, the guys I watched last night,
Starting point is 00:06:22 Bamadabai who has, right now is having his best year as a pro, 21 a game, very good defensive player, and Jimmy Butler, he's averaging 22. Now, Jimmy misses some games, plays hard, gets dinged up. But I just think this is a great, this team leads the NBA in one possession wins, 13. So I think this is a great team in close game. You've got to blow the heat out. If it gets close between their defense, their coaching,
Starting point is 00:06:47 situational basketball. Miami's great. I put them at five. I put Janish and Drew Holiday at four. And the reason is because I think eventually they wanted Chris Middleton to be the two instead of Drew Holiday. Holiday's a better defensive player, very smart veteran player. Janice is the best player in the league and basically he gets them to four. I like Drew Holiday. He's one of the get-a-bucket guys on this team with Jake Crowder and Ingalls and Chris Middleton. But this is a Janus story. He is on any given night the best player, offensive, defensive player in the NBA. That's four. I would say, Three, Tatum and Jalen Brown. My knock is with Jason Tatum.
Starting point is 00:07:21 He didn't show up last night at all. It was great Saturday night against Philly. Did nothing last night. He was tragic in the first quarter. Game was over. Sometimes I don't think Tatum quite has the it. Jalen Brown's the better athlete. Jalen Brown, I feel like, is more aggressive.
Starting point is 00:07:38 But they're phenomenal. You could argue the heart and soul the team is Marcus Smart. But, I mean, they're really, really good A players. Number two, Kevin Durant, Devin Booker. any given night, you'll have the best shooting guard, best shooting player in the planet. They're fantastic. Booker is overlooked a lot in the West because of Dame and Steph and other great guards
Starting point is 00:07:57 and Chris Paul and all the... Devin Booker's a great player. He's not Kobe. He was compared to him early. He's not. But Durant's the best get a bucket guy in the NBA right now. So I think they're number two. And number one, the greatest backcourt shooters in the history of the game,
Starting point is 00:08:11 Steph and Clay. Now, Steph has hurt. Clay's having his best year in five or six years. Clay's having a great year. He's not the defensive player he used to be, but he's still a tremendous player. Super smart. Can finish each other sentences. Steph's going to be fine.
Starting point is 00:08:26 There's no back court in NBA history that can drop 15 points, come back from 12 down, or have a four-point lead become 19 faster, and they have championship moxie, experience, big game clutch performance, IQ off the charts. They're my 10 best duos. By the way, Deerrin, Fox, and Sacramento, they don't play any defense either. And Sabonis, we had like 11. And Beat Harden don't make it. Don't trust them. Flaky.
Starting point is 00:08:58 What do you think of it? Where to begin? First of all, don't play any defense. I get that narrative. But there's no way you can have Mitchell and Garland at 8. They don't play any defense. Donovan Mitchell can't guard anybody. There are four.
Starting point is 00:09:13 In the very loaded east, they're a four could be a three seed. Okay, fine. Four could be a three. The Denver Nuggets are number one by a mile in the West, and they're seventh? Their center is averaging a triple double. Who would you take if you drafted tomorrow? Donovan Mitchell, Darius Garland, or Jamal Murray? You take Murray third?
Starting point is 00:09:32 I would put Murray second. I love Jim. I have an irrational. Dude, he scored over 40 points. Who would you take him over? You take him over Donovan Mitchell? Yeah. Oh, you're out of your mind.
Starting point is 00:09:41 Jamal Murray. I'm a huge. Johnman Mitchell. He's a scoring machine, yeah. He's averaging 20 a game. Have you seen what he did in the playoffs in the bubble? High altitude in Denver. People come into town.
Starting point is 00:09:50 They're exhausted. They can't defend. You should average 29 a game. Why don't you go ask the Clippers, defending Jamal Murray was like in the bubble playoffs. Him and Yokic took down the clippers. The Kauai Paul George Clippers early on. Bubble doesn't count.
Starting point is 00:10:03 It's a nonsense. Come on. Now I know you're joking. You would take Jamal Murray over Donovan Mitchell. Wow. Wow. Ryan. Russell Westbrook guy back here?
Starting point is 00:10:14 No, I don't need to hear. Listen, Jamal Murray would go a little bit higher. with Yokic. I would slide the calves down. Overall, listen, this is very fun. You're not going to like this, but are you too high on Kevin Durant and Devin Booker who have played a total of zero games together? And they're the second best to go with the league.
Starting point is 00:10:32 Well, wait. Time out. But let me ask you this. I have never owned a Bentley. But I know what it looks like. And if I got into it, I know what it would drive like. Am I supposed to go, yeah, Durant, Booker, they haven't. I've never seen them play together.
Starting point is 00:10:46 they're two of the best shooters in a shooter's league at their position in the league. I don't need to see. Kevin Durant works everywhere. Even in Weirdo, Brooklyn, Wackado Brooklyn, he worked.
Starting point is 00:10:59 He was the one guy that worked. Simmons didn't. Kyrieno showed. Hardin came in heavy. Durant worked. He almost single-handedly beat Milwaukee years ago. I'll give you props for the Bentley analogy.
Starting point is 00:11:10 I'm sure that was off the cuff. That was good. Also, Brunson. He's now judging my whip. Brunson and Randall, where are they? You're Mr. Jalen Brunson. I like him a lot. Julius Randall postseason.
Starting point is 00:11:22 Can you kind of marginalize Julius a little in the postseason? Julius, take that jump. I like him a lot. Plays really hard. Yeah, I can't quibble too much. This is a really good list. I got to give a shout out, Jimmy Butler, one of the most underrated players in the league.
Starting point is 00:11:37 A few years ago, when I had a Saturday radio show, I said I would take Butler over Kawhi Leonard, and they were ready to hang me out here in L.A. And Jimmy Butler, all he's done is been better than Kauai Leonard. He's available. He plays. He got to the finals. I like this list.
Starting point is 00:11:51 And I'm curious what Klippers fans think of Paul George and Kauai. They're nine. Yeah, they never play. No, they would be, if they played regularly, probably three. Okay, if LeBron and AD played regularly, where would they be? Well, yeah, but it's, I mean, A.D. missed 24 game. LeBron's not going to be out for two three weeks.
Starting point is 00:12:06 Kauai doesn't do back-to-backs. Come on. Stop. Well, in the playoffs, you don't have back-to-backs. We'll see if he plays in the playoffs. All right. Let's go to Albert Breers at the Combine. I'm sure he has big, strong opinions on our duos.
Starting point is 00:12:21 Okay, so this week, we heard the comment about Bryce Young. Sean Payton had come on my show and said, hey, listen, top 15 picks, you don't go undersized. It doesn't matter about the business. This was always my knock on Baker Mayfield. He's a franchise quarterback. You can't draft him one. That's not what. Jamarcus Russell was a bust.
Starting point is 00:12:40 I got drafting him one. size, arm. So you look at Bryce Young, he's 5, 10, and a half, 192. What do you do? What are you hearing with that size at quarterback? Here's what I'm hearing, that if Bryce Young were 6 foot 3 and 220 pounds, we'd be talking about him like he was Joe Burrow or Andrew Luck. And that's, I think, that's the issue here for the teams that are drafting towards the top,
Starting point is 00:13:08 teams that might look to trade up like Carolina and Indianapolis, is you're looking at a prospect who's got very advanced football knowledge, who's got great feel and instinct in the pocket, who's a competitor, who's produced at a high level in one of the best programs, and probably the best program in college football. And so he checks every single box in tangibles, tangibles, all of it, and the size isn't there. And so that makes this very, very difficult.
Starting point is 00:13:34 I think the best comp I've heard out there and one that I've heard from teams over and over again is Drew Brees. But there are very few quarterbacks who, who are under 6-1 that don't run 4-4-4-5 that make it. And so that naturally leads you to Breeze being the one that would actually match who Bryce Young is. You're obviously going down a very narrow path if you're trying to make a comp to Drew Bree. So it'll be interesting to see what Bryce Young becomes at the next level.
Starting point is 00:13:58 And I think, you know, the big question here is going to be how he holds up because it's not just his height. It's also his frame. And he got hurt at the end of Alabama as well. So I went on a rant yesterday and Will Levis. grandpa went to Cornell, mom went to Yale, big brain power, huge arm. Brain power arm, good. Now, I used two other southern comps, Philip Rivers, Eli Manning that went to non-traditional
Starting point is 00:14:24 southern powers where they're basically surrounded by non-NFL players facing NFL players. And Will Levin stacks up winning completion percentage, TD interception with Eli and Philip Rivers. Now, there's a lot of people that say he kind of lacks pocket awareness and he kind of runs into stuff. Very possible, I'm not a scout. But I also know I sent two executives this weekend some thoughts on Will Levis, and they both liked him. What are you hearing on him? It just feels like to me of all the prospects, he's getting beat up a little bit. And I'm like, go look at Eli's numbers at Ole Miss.
Starting point is 00:15:03 Go look at Phillip Rivers' numbers. Your thoughts. Well, there are a couple things here. Number one, why couldn't he beat out Sean Clifford at Penn State? And Sean Clifford is a good player. But I think that question's definitely lingered for him and one that he's going to have to continue to answer over the next couple of months. The second thing is that he does have all of these tools,
Starting point is 00:15:22 and you do love him as a kid. And the arm, the size, the competitiveness, all that stuff's there. Why wasn't the production better? And a lot of teams are looking at this and they're saying, well, they had Liam Cohen in 2020. and he had a dynamite year. And then he lost Liam Cohen and he took a step back. So was he a product of Liam Cohen bringing in Sean McVeigh's system and making things a little easier?
Starting point is 00:15:46 And then he loses a few players around him and he loses the offensive coach he was working with. And now it doesn't look the same. If you're drafting a guy in the top 10, Colin, that guy, you envision that guy growing into somebody who can fix problems for you. And so we've seen flashes from Liam Cohen when things are really right around him, The question is, can he do it consistently enough? And does he have the feel in the pocket, the instincts? All that stuff I talked about with Bryce Young, can he develop those at the next level? Generally, those are really hard things to develop the pro level.
Starting point is 00:16:18 And so you have to have a lot of confidence in your coaches that they'll be able to get that done. So when you're at the Combine, a lot of coaching staffs won't go. It's always been a great opportunity for GMs and coaches to mingle and talk. And it's almost like they say business deals are done on a golf course. business deals are done in Indianapolis at that steak shake snack snack place around the corner I've heard legendary stories about where guys are up all night long having milkshakes and eating burgers I got bad news though what bad news what it's now closed at midnight
Starting point is 00:16:49 what a bummer it was 24 hours before yeah it's now close to midnight what the hell no more great deals done at three in the morning but but the Derek car thing is interesting J-Mac brought this up before so he was overlooked at Fresno State Raiders bail on him. And now there's rumors about Derek everywhere. Is this just his agent showing him love? I still think Charlotte fit, Carolina fits. What are you hearing on Derek Carr?
Starting point is 00:17:19 There's a rumor every day on him. So there's mutual interest between he and the Jets. And I think the Jets are the team that's sort of taken this the furthest. Now there's been an understanding on both sides there where Derek Carr wants to look around and the Jets want to wait. for more clarity on what's happening with Aaron Rogers. And they also want to survey the landscape, Ryan Tannenhill, Daniel Jones, Gino Smith, all the options that are out there.
Starting point is 00:17:44 And so, you know, I think if you had to handicap this, you'd say Derek Carr is probably the second option for the Jets at this point. Like, if they feel like the Rogers thing isn't going to work out, then they turn to Derek Carr and maybe that gets done. And I think it's interesting because you look across the landscape here with all of these guys, right? I think for the first time and forever, Colin, there are more. experienced starting quarterbacks out there in the market, then there are available spots to
Starting point is 00:18:09 start. So if you think about that, right, like if the supply outweighs the demand, is the market going to drop out somewhere? And are there going to be deals to be had there? Because I think there are teams that are going to look at this and they're going to say, well, yeah, I like Daniel Jones, or I like Jimmy Garapolo, or I like Derek Carr. The problem is, like I have to pay 30 or 35 million dollars for him. Give me Baker Mayfield for 10 million bucks instead. So I think that's what's something about this market is that you look at the makeup of it and there are so many guys who have starting
Starting point is 00:18:39 experience that are going to be out there. And I just don't think there are the number of starting jobs out there for all of those guys to find homes where they're going to be able to make the money they want to make. I said this. Chicago has no history of getting offense right. I mean, the last great skill player
Starting point is 00:18:55 they drafted was, I think, 2012, Alshon Jeffrey. Their first offensive draft pick last year, third round receiver from Tennessee. it's not working. And so I believe their defensive culture, and they have a defensive coach, their best served to trade down, get multiple picks. They've already got two fives.
Starting point is 00:19:17 They already gave away another two. But if you could get a couple seconds, a couple thirds, you go down to Houston, then you go down to Indy. And load up on offensive players, try to hit in a couple. I think that feels like what I would do, get me as many picks. as I can so I can reduce, you know, the chances of literally coming out of a draft without a top skill player. What are you hearing on Chicago? Well, I mean, you said it, Colin. They flat out need players, you know, and they need volume,
Starting point is 00:19:48 and they need guys across the board on the lines of scrimmage. They need more receivers. They've got some help in the defensive backfield last year. They could probably use even a little bit more. There's not a spot of that roster where you look and say they couldn't add another player. And so they absolutely need numbers. here. And because of the makeup of this year's class, like that cliff comes pretty early, right? Like when there's that real drop off and teams are starting to get into, you know, second round grades, we're talking about that happening in the teens. And, you know, when you get down to like 11 or 12 this year, there may not be a big difference between that pick and the 40th pick.
Starting point is 00:20:22 So I think what you're going to see here from Chicago is we probably want to stay inside the top 10 within at least one pick. But because maybe there isn't a huge difference between one of the Clemson guys and a Will Anderson or a Jalen Carter or, you know, the Iowa guy, whoever it is there at nine, if you trade down with Carolina, well, you know, now you can accumulate a lot more picks. So I'm with you. They could either trade down multiple times and put themselves in a position where they have a lot of picks off multiple trades, or they could choose instead of trading down to two or four with Houston or Indianapolis, just trade all the way down to nine initially. And then maybe you pick up more picks because you went further down. So I do think that this is a volume
Starting point is 00:21:05 draft for the Bears where they want to get as many picks as they possibly can. Obviously, they already gave up one of their picks for Chase Claypool. So I think accumulating capital now is going to be a key when it comes to trading away the number one. Okay, he's all this stuff. He's got great stuff on the quarterbacks. He's at the combine. He's the lead content guy for Monday morning quarterback. Read his stuff. Next four or five columns are going to be so good. I've come to terms with this draft, that Bryce Young is the most gifted quarterback. Richardson at Florida is the most intriguing. And then Will Leveson, C.J. Stroud are good, but not good enough to overcome
Starting point is 00:21:40 nonsense. They'll be as good as where they land. And that's kind of where I fall. It's fair. Yeah. I mean, that's what it feels like to me. So read his stuff. We will. We'll have him on again from the combine next week for more updates.
Starting point is 00:21:54 Albert, it's great seeing you. Awesome. Thanks, Colin. Isn't that feel fair? that Bryce Young is the most naturally gifted at the position. Richardson from Florida has got a lot to work with, fascinating prospect, and that Will Levison Stroud are both super talented kids. But they're not good enough.
Starting point is 00:22:13 They're Justin Fields. They're not good enough to overcome a disastrous coach or a bad old line. They're just not that gifted. I would agree with all of that, but I will counter with this, Colin. When Jalen Hertz was coming out of college, did anybody say, man, with the right offense, with the right coaching, that guy could be an MVP candidate and nearly win a Super Bowl by himself. That's a lot.
Starting point is 00:22:36 We never said that about Mahomes out of college. That's a, some of that's just... Mitch Trubisky went second in the draft. Mahomes went 10th. Like, maybe we're putting too much stock in what we've seen in the kids in college, and we're not thinking about what they can be with the right coaching and infrastructure. Well, I contend, I'll talk about this on the underside. I have changed how I look at quarterbacks over the last two years,
Starting point is 00:22:59 and I'll talk about it after. Okay, wait. Sorry, I'm not. One more herd? The herd streams 24 hours a day, seven days a week, within the IHard Radio app. Search Herd to listen live or on demand whenever you'd like. Either way, the podcast, Superhuman, documented it all, embedded in the games and with the athletes for a full year. Within probably 10 days, I'd put on 10 pounds. Starting point is 00:25:40 They're now saying they'll reevaluate him in two weeks, but his return is expected to take longer than that. If you follow LeBron on the gram, he was very upset. Understandably. I don't know why he was wearing like a sock. What was that? Was he at a hospital or something? No, that's his house, man.
Starting point is 00:25:58 I just don't understand what that sock is. That looks like a hospital bed. That's a house. There's no way LeBron's in a hospital. He's over across the street at the hospital. 13th floor. He was upset. Lakers are not making the playoffs, right?
Starting point is 00:26:13 Well, as we often say when we argue about something, barring an injury, I thought they would end up being a playoff team. But if he's hurt and misses 10 games, they're not a playoff. I think they play Memphis tonight. They might get smacked around. No, they'll get roll tonight. Yeah, they'll get beat tonight. DeAngelo Russell, we don't know if he's coming back.
Starting point is 00:26:30 I don't think he's playing tonight either. I mean, it's going to be the Jared Vanderbilt Troy Brown show for the... Vanderbilt's always been a nice player. And remember Memphis wants payback for what happened. Oh, yeah. Remember that game? Yes. Could get ugly tonight.
Starting point is 00:26:41 I'm not putting any money on it, but I can see Memphis rolling. Like, this is a game they've had circled and now there's no LeBron, the Lakers. Limp into town. The shoulders have to be sagging, Colin. I had said they would make it and then get smacked around by the Nuggets, that duo that you disrespected. Lakers without LeBron have been not quite a tire fire, but what is that?
Starting point is 00:27:01 Like a tire blowout maybe? They'll compete. There's a flat. They're not good without LeBron, period. They're not the same. They're averaging 30 points a game. They're not a playoff team with him yet, so forget without him. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:27:14 Schedule's soft, but nevertheless. Moving on, your guy. Carson Wentz. I can call him your guy, right? Well, he was for a while. He was almost an MVP for a while. Like seven years ago. He just got dumped by the Washington commanders.
Starting point is 00:27:29 Two and five as a starter. Two years left on his deal, but no guaranteed money. Washington saves over 26 milly in cap space. Now, this is where it gets interesting. You look around the league. Is there a landing spot for Carson Wentz anywhere? You know what's interesting? Washington has a defensive coach, so there's concern.
Starting point is 00:27:50 McClorin's a great receiver. They drafted Dobson, they've drafted well. They've got a very good defensive front. They're real. That's a classic example of you have, it's a great example. If you put a top 10 quarterback in Washington, I could argue they could win that division. They're just so mediocre at the most important position. But I like their receivers.
Starting point is 00:28:13 I mean, they won the division a couple years ago with Taylor Heineke. I think seven and maybe seven or eight wins. No, they're a really, really. interesting roster that has no shot at quarterback. Well, you know, I haven't heard Washington connected to Derek Cardo. If I were Washington, I would want to be lying in a week quietly. I'm not going near Dan Snyder. He's too toxic.
Starting point is 00:28:33 I don't want anything near that ownership. Eric B. Enemy just left Andy Reid. Oh, I wouldn't have done that. I don't know Eric, but I wouldn't have done that. I want nothing to do with this owner. Okay. I'll just throw out of two teams for you, Carson Wentz, potential. Oh, I'm over him.
Starting point is 00:28:49 No, I mean, he's going to be in the league next year, right? I mean, the guy's not even like 32 years old or anything. Okay, L.A. Raiders cannot get Jimmy Garra. Oakland, Las Vegas Raiders. No, he doesn't fit that offense. That's why they like Stidivom. Stidum's kind of robotic and delivers the ball where they want. Wenz is too much of a risk taker.
Starting point is 00:29:08 And he's, I think, hey, I, I... New Orleans Saints do not land on... Well, they got a million bad quarterbacks. That's not going to work. And he's two turnover-prone, defensive coach, Dennis Allen. doesn't want to turn over prone quarterback. They'd rather take the limited Andy Dalton who didn't turn it over as much.
Starting point is 00:29:24 That's why they want to get rid of James Winston. They already got Wentz. It's called James Winston. Big guy moves okay, makes too many mistakes. And finally, the Philadelphia Eagles are reportedly promoting QB coach Brian Johnson to offensive coordinator. He's expected to be the play caller. Jalen Hertz made a huge leap in year two with Johnson,
Starting point is 00:29:44 but we should also add Shane Steichen. The good offensive coordinator was very integral there. They have a relationship, Johnson and Hertz back to Hertz's childhood when Johnson was coached by Jalen's father. Now, I like that. We did see in Buffalo going from Daibald to Ken Dorsey. And Dorsey was a good. People love Dorsey. He was highly sought after. And how did you think Josh Allen did this year? I'm just saying Dorsey was a good candidate. I was told years before Frank Wright got his first job.
Starting point is 00:30:15 Everybody loved this guy named Frank Reich, who quarterback for years for Buffalo. told two years ago, three years ago, Ken Dorsey was this hot coordinator. Meanwhile, Sean McBey came out of nowhere. So I never know if these guys are going to hit or not. Dayball, we all kind of felt was going to be a good hire. One of the stories in Buffalo was Daibole and gruff, tough, blue-collar guy. He's going to push back on McDermott when he was the offensive coordinator. Don't tell me how to do my job.
Starting point is 00:30:38 I got this. Dorsey doesn't. Dorsey not really that type of dude. So if McDermott's saying, listen, we're going to win with our defense, let's get some more running, let's trade for a running back. I don't know that Dorsey pushed back as much as he needed to. We'll see what happens in Philly with, you know, is Brian Johnson going to O.C.?
Starting point is 00:30:55 Listen, offensive coordinator basically, it's a powerful position around the league. You know you're in line. You do well. You're in line for a coaching job. So it'll be interesting to watch with Hertz in Philly. I don't know. Oh, he'll do fine. I think he'll do fine.
Starting point is 00:31:09 I don't think they'll be as stacked. I mean, they have too many free agents. Schedule is going to be a little more difficult. We'll see what happens with the offensive line. They just ran. I was thinking about this when I was walking on the beach in Florida last week. Just how good Kansas City's offense was. Name the two defenses in this league that we viewed as stacked.
Starting point is 00:31:30 Philly and the Niners. Forty-nors, yeah. Kansas City hot knife through butter against both in the second half. It was just inevitable. They literally went to the Bay Area. San Francisco rolls everybody at home. And they rolled the Niners in the second half. And they rolled the evening.
Starting point is 00:31:46 Eagles. 13 of 14 was Mahalves in the second half. We've got to come down to term. It's not the officials. Kansas City this year was unstoppable offensively. After trading away, Tyree Kim. I know. That's a scary prospect. It is.
Starting point is 00:32:01 Jay Mack with the news. Well, that's the news. And thanks for stopping by. The herd line news. We got a couple good topics here. And I know Jason and I disagree with this. But this whole load management thing, Barclays out there. and I don't consider myself an old head.
Starting point is 00:32:19 I connect, I think, fairly well with younger people. But as a consumer, it does bother me when you send the message that you don't care about. I remember years ago, it was my worst moment as a dad. My totally worst moment is a dad. My daughter played basketball and just screwing around on the way home. I made her cry. And I remember saying, I'm no longer going to take you to the games. If you don't care, why am I driving an hour and a half to go to games one way?
Starting point is 00:32:48 If you don't care, why don't I can? If you care, I'll drive to another state three times a week. But if you don't care, I don't care. She started crying and I was a terrible dad. But the point being is there is a message, I think, is being sent out there. And fans are very quick to pick up on this. Fans are very savvy. If you don't care, we don't care.
Starting point is 00:33:07 And Barclay talks about that and we'll have that coming up. Others say it's unleashing human potential. Either way, the podcast's Superhuman documented it all, embedded in the games and with the athletes for a full year. A win is a win. I don't care which I'm saying. Yep, that's me, Clipper Taylor the 4th. You might have seen the skits, the reactions,

Hey, this is Robert from the Stuff to Blow Your Mind podcast. Joe and I are both lifelong Star Wars fan, so we're celebrating May the 4th with a brand new week of fun, thought-provoking Star Wars
Starting point is 00:35:41 episodes. Join us as we tackle science and culture topics from a galaxy far, far away, such as the biology of taun tons and wampas on the ice planet hot, or the practicality and corporate business sense of the Sith rule of two. Listen to stuff to blow your mind on the Iheart radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. The NFL Combine is this week, and so is your chance to win $5,000 of Terry Bradshaw's money for free and playing FoxxBet Super 6. Just down. Download the Super Six app on your phone and make your six combine predictions for a chance at the jackpot. Now, earlier in the show, JMAQ really taken umbrage with some of Charles Barkley's opinions,
Starting point is 00:36:24 which is very disappointing. He's a friend of the show. But Barclay and I strongly agree on this load management issue, and I think Adam Silver is tone deaf. So the NFL ratings, don't tell me all sports ratings are down, WNBA ratings last several years. I don't know about this year, but have been up. NFL ratings this year are up. There's all sorts of sports ratings that are up. NBA ratings have been on a five or six year decline.
Starting point is 00:36:53 Now, you can argue there's a lot of, they took on some social causes. Maybe that is it. I don't know. I don't have the answers, but they're down. And the All-Star ratings were like a 20-year low. They were terrible. Now, Major League Baseball is making some radical change. changes to speed the game up.
Starting point is 00:37:11 It took forever, but you got to hold baseball fans in their hands and bring them along to the 21st century, but there are making changes and they are speeding the game up. The NBA appears to be semi-tone deaf. Nothing to see here. The NFL ratings with Kaepernick went down 2% and the league freaked. Networks didn't want to put Kaepernick anthems on the air. I get it.
Starting point is 00:37:35 Like, right? So my takeaway is this is not a one-year issue with the NBA. It's been a five- or six-year issue. Baseball was about a 10-to-12-year issue where you see this gradual decline in ratings or All-Star Games. It's not the end of the world. Baseball makes a ton of money. So does the NBA.
Starting point is 00:37:54 But Charles Barkley pushes back not on player mobility, which I think is fine. Barkley move, Durant move, LeBron move. I think that makes the league better and more fascinating. But load management. electing not to play, and here's Charles. I don't think fans get mad if you're making $30, $40, $50 million, if you play basketball every night. But you can't make $34 to $50 million and then sit-out games.
Starting point is 00:38:22 I think it's disrespectful to the game. I think it's disrespectful to the fans. They fly private. They've got the best medical stuff ever created. It ain't like we should work it in a steel mill, brother. I mean, if people work in a stem meal every day, I'm pretty sure they're tired too. Of the 22 leading scores in the NBA, top 22, one has played every game. And almost all of them have missed double figures.
Starting point is 00:38:52 Okay. I understand the seasons long. I get it. But fans are very perceptive. The NFL has made radical rule changes. why? To keep their stars healthy. I don't want Patrick Mahomes missing any starts. And so they've made the league,
Starting point is 00:39:12 they've made defensive head coaches virtually feel like they should be extinct. They've changed the game, which will change records. It will change history. You can't stop a Patrick Mahomes, even if you're stacked like the Niners or the Eagles. You can't stop them. And so the NBA, my issue is not not the fact that a player occasionally misses games.
Starting point is 00:39:37 Can you miss a Tuesday? Saturday night or this weekend, I wanted to watch the Bucks and the Sons. But no Yannis, no KD, they choose not to play, so I choose not to watch. I'm just a consumer last night. Bucks, last night the Knicks and the Celtics. Jalen Brown's like, I don't want to play. I don't need to watch. Again, you have the power.
Starting point is 00:40:01 as Jalen Hertz and Mahomes are screaming at their coaches to play, all banged up, increasingly NBA stars find reasons not to play. It's not the end of the world. Nobody's ever really watched, even in the great David Stern days. The truth is David Stern, the late David Stern would tell people privately. Nobody watches us until we get to the playoffs anyway. But when one of the 22 leading scores has played every game and most have missed 10, 50, I mean, Kauai Leonard's comical. You never know when he's going to play.
Starting point is 00:40:34 And Golden State recently. Andrew Wiggins, out. Personal reasons. Jalen Brown, out, personal reasons. Kaira Irving's made it like a vocation. Out, personal reasons. You're sending a message. And the message is, just like baseball for a year, sent this message.
Starting point is 00:40:53 We don't think your time is valuable. And the game goes four hours. That's a you problem. And people are like, oh, wait, time out. my time is valuable. I have kids. I have a job. I can't sit and watch TV.
Starting point is 00:41:05 Baseball's messaging was, your time doesn't matter. I'm going to stop watching. The NBA's messaging is, you know, stars, they'll play when they want to play. I don't think it should be that way. You can tweak. You may not be able to solve every issue.
Starting point is 00:41:24 55 quarterbacks played this year. The NFL still hasn't completely solved the ability of the or the dilemma of the injured quarterback. Everybody goes to seemingly 90% of the teams go to a backup quarterback or a third quarterback. But the NFL's making and sending a message. They're making an effort to keep their stars healthy.
Starting point is 00:41:46 Baseball now with radical changes is making an effort to show that your time is valuable. And when you have a season that's double the length of the NBA, we want to move these games along. I don't like the messaging of it. which is stars will play when they want to play. I don't even remember missing games for personal reasons. And to add to that, teams didn't used to have their own planes.
Starting point is 00:42:10 They've got their own planes. Now they get a nine-day break during the All-Star game. The medical staffs are better. The food is better. The training is better. So the NBA keeps going above and beyond to help the players, and I don't mind you missing eight games a year. I don't have a problem.
Starting point is 00:42:28 A veteran player can. Can't go back to back. I get it. I get it. Playoffs don't demand back to backs. And that's when you get your best basketball. But the messaging to me is lousy. You choose not to play. I choose not to watch. Baseball, my time didn't matter. I chose not to watch. Football is constantly tweaking the sport. Remember the catch rule? I hated it. They fixed it. They fixed it. Back up quarterbacks or bad football. They're trying to fix it. It's a messaging issue. And so we're on like a six year. It's not a one year.
Starting point is 00:43:01 I mean, sometimes the Kaepernick situation was a one or two year deal. It came back up. But when you're on like a six year attendance, all-star ratings decline, the audience is electing to turn you off. So you have to, as a commissioner, go, why are they turning us off? My guess is baseball ratings will go up this year. That is my guess that baseball ratings will slightly tick up. Audiences will go, oh, we're already in the second.
Starting point is 00:43:27 Yesterday is a great example. I got in my car. I drove to the grocery store. It's about a 10-minute drive. They got right through the inning. They started a second inning on the short drive. Folks, I can remember being in New England watching a Red Sox Blue Jays. I had a little workout gym in my house.
Starting point is 00:43:46 And there was a 47-minute inning, Red Sox Blue Jays. It was a very kind of labor-intensive inning. They made a pitching change or three. And I remember thinking at the time is, who has time? who the life has time to watch a baseball game. Now, not every game is like that, but yesterday I drive to the store and boom, Dodgers were on the radio flew through an inning.
Starting point is 00:44:12 And I'm like, oh, that's fast. I got time for almost any sport. Don't make me wait. My time's valuable. Now, J-MAC is all for load management. You are a fan of load management. You defend load. It's not a black or white issue.
Starting point is 00:44:27 First of all, we need to do one thing and stop with the NFL comparisons to NBA. 17 NFL games, 82 NBA. What I do agree with you on is this lack of urgency in the NBA regular season. Undeniably, like, who cares if you miss a game in February? Or watching, I'm talking about. NFL players, Pat Mahomes missed a game
Starting point is 00:44:46 could mean the number one seed and hosting a playoff game. But when it comes to load management and ratings, yes, the All-Star game was... The ratings were awful. But that doesn't have anything to do with load management. I'm talking about, like, regular season ratings. Season's not over so we don't know.
Starting point is 00:45:02 But I looked at the Christmas ratings. They were good. And they were up across the board. I think then 12 o'clock window is the highest it's been in 12 years. Yeah. So do people tune in for the big games? Sure. But Colin, I love the NBA.
Starting point is 00:45:15 Like you just said, life is too short to be watching every Laker game. That's right. But the big TV games, the stars should make an effort to play. You know what? I want the stars to do what's best for them. Because I did look this up. sparring with some people on social media yesterday because I had some time to kill. Larry Byrd retired early.
Starting point is 00:45:35 Yes. Isaiah Thomas retired early. Magic very early. Michael Jordan quit. I'm going to use quit, not retired, twice early. LeBron thriving at 38. Steph Curry averaging like 30 a game at 35. These guys have years to go.
Starting point is 00:45:50 Is it because they've load managed and not played 82 games the way Jordan, Isaiah, and Bird did? Well, part of it is you can't tackle players anymore. Also, training methods, dieting. Yeah, it's gotten better. The players are their longevity matter. Would you rather watch Steph Curry at 35, 36, 37? Or just not have him in the league because he played a bunch of meaningless October, November, December games, Colin.
Starting point is 00:46:11 Well, it's not meaningless to that kid who waited all year to go to one game in Milwaukee. That's not meaningless. I hate to say it, but maybe you shouldn't look up to Curry at that level. I can't wait by highlight of my year is watching Steph Curry. Like, find some new highlights, kid. Another podcast from some SNL late-night comedy guy. Not quite. Unhumor me with Robert Smygel and friends. Me and hilarious guests from Bob Odenkirk to David Letterman help make you funnier.
Starting point is 00:46:35 This week, my guest, S&L's Mikey Day and head writer, Streeter Seidel, help an a cappella band with their between songs banter. Where does your group perform? We do some retirement homes. Those people are starving for banter. Listen to humor me with Robert Smigel and Friends on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Starting point is 00:47:00 Some call it grotesque. Others say it's unleashing human potential. Either way, the podcast's Superhuman documented it all, embedded in the games and with the athletes for a full year. Within probably 10 days, I'd put on 10 pounds.
