Starting point is 00:00:12 We invented a podcast? Well, we didn't invent it. We just contributed to it. We're the first people to do podcasts. We get to ask other people questions because we're sick and tired of being asked questions. Well, sick and tired is a strong way to put it. But, you know, tired and sick. Tired and sick.
Starting point is 00:00:26 Listen to Hey Jonas on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you. you get your podcast. Just listen. We don't care where you hear it. Another podcast from some SNL late night comedy guy. Not quite. Unhumor me with Robert Smygel and Friends. Me and hilarious guests from Bob Odenkirk to David Letterman help make you funnier.
Starting point is 00:00:45 This week, my guest, SNL's Mikey Day and head writer, Streeter Seidel, help an a cappella band with their between songs banter. Where does your group perform? We do some retirement homes. Those people are starving for banter. Listen to humor me with Robert Smigel and Friends on the ice. Heart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. I'm Michelle McPhee, and I've been unraveling the strangest criminal alliance I've ever
Starting point is 00:01:09 reported on, a Mormon polygamist and an Armenian businessman. Multi-million dollar house, Ferraris and Lamborghinis, private jets, a billion dollar fraud. But how long can this alliance last? Tell me what you know. Is somebody coming after me? Listen to Kingdom of Fraud on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Last night, a blown call changed a game. This morning, the internet lost its mind, and nobody's telling you exactly what happened. That's where Sports Slice comes in. I'm Timbo, and every episode, we're cutting through the noise, breaking down the biggest moments in sports and giving you the real story behind the headline.
Starting point is 00:01:51 And we're going straight to the source, the athletes themselves, their locker room stories, their reactions, the moment and the stuff nobody gets to hear. Listen to SportsSlic on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcast. And for more, follow Timbo Slicelife-Life 12 in the TikTok podcast network on TikTok. Thanks for listening to the Heard podcast. Be sure to catch us live every weekday on Fox Sports Radio in noon to 3 Eastern, 9 a.m. To noon Pacific. Find your local station for the herd at Fox SportsRadio.com or stream us live every day in the IHeart Radio app by searching Fox Sports Radio or FSR.
Starting point is 00:02:29 You're listening to Fox Sports Radio. Here we go. It's hour two and a Wednesday. We're live in L.A. It's the herd. Wild night in the NBA. La Mello ball and the circus, known as the Hornets, slip past Miami and the Blazers. What a story they are. Get ready to face the Spurs. Come from behind, raining threes late for the Blazers as they beat a Phoenix team, which overachieved all year. actually. They were supposed to be awful and they end up being about a 500 team. So we talk about it all the time how much talent there is
Starting point is 00:03:03 in the NBA with all these European players and how good the draft is going to be. I'm going to tell you right now in baseball because of the international surge. And there are so many guys. Nolan McLean, rookie pitcher for the Mets. The guy is so good. He's a rookie and he
Starting point is 00:03:19 appeared in two games in the world baseball classic. He got into a pitcher's duel last night with Yoshi Yamamoto for the Dodgers. May have been the Dodgers best win of the year. Kyle Tucker, been slumping, got a big hit. Alex Bessia in the bullpen, who struck out the side. It was a huge win for the Dodgers because Edwin Diaz, his velocity is down. Kyle Tucker is slumping, but it really comes down to Yamamoto, who is the Mets offered
Starting point is 00:03:44 him $325 million for 12 years. It came down to the Mets and Dodgers, and they offered him an opt-out after five years, and players love to get to free agency. The Dodgers offered him $325 and no opt-out. If you want to be a Dodger, you got to stay. And he said, yeah, I want to be a Dodger. And a lot of that, I think, is playing with Shohei Otani. And a lot of it is the way the Dodgers treat their players.
Starting point is 00:04:07 And so it's nothing against Steve Cohen and the Mets says they're going to build a casino right next to city field. But the Mets always have a feel like, you know, they like you to know they've got money. And they don't always spend it wisely. And the Dodgers do. They spend it on their clubhouse, on the families, on their scouts, on their insurance. executives. And it came down to the Dodgers and the Mets for Yoshi. And he gave up a bomb to Lindor first inning and was unhittable after that. Here's Dave Roberts. It was old school, you know, pitchers duel. And you can see both pitchers feeling like they didn't have any margin. And
Starting point is 00:04:50 after that first inning, and we're fortunate to, you know, squeak one out. And the leadoff homer, from Lindor. But after that, I mean, there was just nothing happening. No emotion, getting ready to go back out for the eighth inning. Seeing a guy that was really thrown the baseball really well. And there's just kind of the ability to make pitches when he needs to. Yeah, last night, absolutely for both teams. The Mets finally scored, but it had a playoff feel to it.
Starting point is 00:05:16 And the Dodgers got once again high leverage spots, just like the playoffs. They needed starting pitching. They needed a closer. They needed a timely hit. Kyle Tucker delivered. So that was as good a Dodger win as they have had last season. And with that, Fox Sports NBA analyst covering the NBA since the early 90s, Rachel Nichols, who I get to see in person.
Starting point is 00:05:38 I know. I make these little... Little Jonts to the West Coast. We're honored with your presence. Johnst makes it sound like I've got a bunch of cool things going on. I just don't. Okay, so I said we were talking earlier. I thought last night was the best night for the NBA in six months.
Starting point is 00:05:54 The playing games are urgency. Lamello ball's fascinating. So John Wooden, it's not John Wooden basketball. It's a little out of control. Yeah. A little? Since the All-Star break, they've shot over 114 threes more than even the Celtics.
Starting point is 00:06:12 I know it's just a playing game. It felt big for Charlotte. Oh, it was. I mean, this has been a great run after the All-Spar break for the Charlotte Hornets, really vaulted them into the place that a lot of people thought they should have been over the last couple of years. And Lamello is wildly. inconsistent and you saw that last night
Starting point is 00:06:28 with the Lamello ball experience from, you know, hitting some great shots to missing some things to, you know, some bad fouls where he, you know, at the very end of the game overtime, fouled when he shouldn't have. And of course, the injury to Bamatta Bio. So you got the full paint palette with Lamella last night.
Starting point is 00:06:46 But the fact that he was instrumental on the win was a big deal. Yeah, I mean, they're not a good team. Unlike the Lakers who have experienced and are a great team in clutch situations, the Hornets are not. But they also have a point differential. When they beat you, they often clobber you. So I thought it was a really fun night.
Starting point is 00:07:03 The NBA is looking into Bam out of bayou. Okay, we know there's gray area in sports. Yeah. I could see in that moment for Charlotte that had not won an elimination game, the refs didn't see it. I didn't see it. I didn't see it. So I don't think you can eject him when you don't see it.
Starting point is 00:07:23 Do you think it's possible the next playing game? game, he gets tossed. I mean, it is possible. I think it's unlikely. You know, we always ask, is this reckless or on purpose? Those are two different things. Reckless is still punishable, by the way, because you can't be reckless when you're dealing with other human beings out there. But if he really went after him, I can see them suspending him, but it doesn't look like that to me at least. And I think we're more likely to either see a fine or a flagrant foul-a-worded post after this game, and that'll count toward his playoff flagrants that
Starting point is 00:07:56 you know, if he gets enough, if he gets eight, he has to be suspended, so. So the Blazers have some interesting draft capital. They have a new owner. Donovan Klingin from Yukon is becoming a great player. Scoot Henderson, Shaden Sharp, they've got some young talent. They had the coaching disaster earlier in the season.
Starting point is 00:08:15 But everybody's talking about the, you know D.C. well. I do. And this is what happens. He comes from Israel, overseas, goes to a crappy team. Nobody sees him on the national TV games. Exactly. Let's talk about the star of the game. Denny Avdi, a man, 41 points.
Starting point is 00:08:30 And just, you know, he's been such a revelation for the last two years since he got to. He was averaging 5, 8, 12. He's now 24, 6 and 6. Yeah. Only like two guys in the NBA do that. Yes, absolutely. And look, you know, I'm in D.C. all the time. I can tell you that on a team where winning is not the priority, which is the way I like to say it,
Starting point is 00:08:50 it is hard for a guy to take those jumps and take those leaps because the way the rest of the game is being coached and the way, you know, the team is made up is not necessarily in a way that is, you know, set up for him to do that. And you get to Portland where they're trying to win. And you can really see how talented he is. And it's been so much fun. I mean, I know Denny pretty well. I like him. And he's just a good guy, good team guy. The guys love him in the locker room.
Starting point is 00:09:15 It's been friend. Yeah. Between, I think, Donovan Klingin, he's the Yukon kid. He's a, it's funny, I had watched Phoenix and Portland play in February, and he was, he could hit threes. He's just a, I think he's like the best offensive rebounder in the NBA. Yeah. So Portland's got draft capital and two or three really, this kid's only 25 years old. He's still a baby.
Starting point is 00:09:33 Oh, yeah. So tonight, I was saying this, maybe I should be more sentimental. I am not a rear view mirror person. Okay. Okay, whatever. Dysfunctional childhood. I don't remember that. So I'm not.
Starting point is 00:09:49 And I look at the Warriors, and Bob Myers is like, listen, man, the best times are over. I'm getting out of here. And they've spent $275 million on players since, and they're in a playing game. In a weird way, I almost think, like the OKC loss for the Lakers, a loss tonight is the final, shake yourself. Well, look, Steph Curry is staying. So when you talk about will they revamp the team, it's going to always be around Steph Curry. and they've had opportunities to trade Draymond. It almost came close last year, so we'll see what happens.
Starting point is 00:10:25 You know, it was clear that they were going after Janus. They made a very specific and big offer. You have to assume they'll do that again this summer. And now we know that they also went after Kawhi Leonard. So that's interesting with this game, with the Clippers and Warriors facing each other. You know, Clippers have really already turned the page. They got rid of their best players over this season. So the only remaining guy, the guy, the best guy, Kawhi has been there.
Starting point is 00:10:49 and we'll have to see if he makes it through this summer. So a lot of change on both of these teams we could see. You know, you said emphatically definitively last time you were on, and I think it made news on social media, if I recall, that you said, listen, LeBron's going to have to take a massive pay cut to come back. I do think there are these moments in sports, because players get very popular, and LeBron is still an asset. and there are, listen, he has spurts
Starting point is 00:11:19 where he's a top 12 player in the league. There's no question. I mean, the minute, Luca and Austin Reeves got hurt, next three games he went out and did old LeBron stuff. Do you still believe, because this series is going to be ugly, do you think LeBron has it, I think it's hard for him? I think the psychology is real. Is LeBron, somebody, Nick Wright called it a very expensive Draymond Green.
Starting point is 00:11:44 Set screens, third offensive option. need you to be a catalyst. Obviously, he's better than Draymond offensively, but you're the third guy. Do you think he can go there? You mean, not in this series, obviously. He's the number one guy in this series for the Lakers. But sure, I think the question with LeBron is not so much money, because I do think he will have to take a massive pay cut. And knows it. How much of a pay cut does that really matter to a billionaire? I think it's sort of the status of being paid the full max. And once you don't have that anymore, I'm not sure it matters to him how much of a pay cut it is, but it is a huge role change. And to your point, is he going to want to come back and play that role? Because he is,
Starting point is 00:12:24 you know, they've called him the best third man in the league, and I think he is. But is he going to want to be that? And he's going to want to do it for an entire season. It's one thing to do it for the last, like, six weeks of the season, and, you know, we thought do it in the playoffs and all for one for all. But are you going to want to go through an eight-month NBA season, being the third guy, scrapping for things? That, to me, is the biggest question for him. about whether he comes back and where. Yeah, I mean, Michael wouldn't have done it. The Lake Kobe would not have done it.
Starting point is 00:12:52 No. That's not their personality. I think, you know, we were talking about KD and the burner issue, and I said, if you'd have given me six or seven stars in the NBA a year ago and said one of them is going to have a burner incident with his teammates, I would have guessed Kevin Durant. I mean, it's kind of his personality. If you'd have told me there's a superstar in the NBA and he's going to take a massive pay cut and he's going to, even though he's still really good, he's going to be a number three
Starting point is 00:13:16 when he's probably on certain moments better than the first two. I would guess LeBron. I always said my favorite LeBron stat, he averaged 27 a game in high school as a junior, and only 28 is a senior. He could have scored 70. Absolutely. He's always been about elevating people beyond himself.
Starting point is 00:13:31 100%. First time I met him, he was 16 years old. And talking to him then and talking to his high school coach, it was very clear that that was going to be his mentality coming into the league. And it has been. And, you know, obviously he's grown tremendously since then, even from what we expected when he was drafted.
Starting point is 00:13:47 But he does have the capability to do this. It's just a question of, does he want to? And I think what happens in this playoffs is going to be interesting. I think that there's a country lyric that's like, I'm not as good as I once was, but I'm as good once as I ever was. And I'm interested to see what happens in these playoffs. If that's the LeBron we're going to get, he's not as good as he once was. But is he going to be as good over this next week and a half as he ever was?
Starting point is 00:14:12 We'll see. Yeah, absolutely. So, you know, it's harder to do it over a seven-game series than a one, you know, one-shot NFL game. But we'll see. I mean, the Rockets are a really strong defensive team. And Kevin Durant, man, he had just another spectacular season. Oldest player to ever shoot as much as he did and score as much as he did, incredibly efficient. And, you know, 37 years old.
Starting point is 00:14:37 And I think he played 78 games. Yeah, I never, I said this. I was saying this about Aaron Rogers and Kevin Durant and artists in general. Yeah. Great athletes or artists to some degree. Here's a canvas, you're painting. Yeah. You have to allow artists.
Starting point is 00:14:55 Brando made a lot of bad movies. And, you mean, there's Christopher Nolan doesn't. But you have to allow all sorts of different artists. And Kevin's not going to be LeBron. No. That's not who he is. But in order to see greatness in the arts, and I consider sports to have some intrinsic artistic value.
Starting point is 00:15:14 You've got to allow guys like, I just want a ball. I don't want to lead. And what is it? Do you deal with him ever, Kevin? Oh, yeah. Absolutely. I mean, he is a guy who is, I think, very proud and still should be about the way he has been playing. He's still a great player.
Starting point is 00:15:28 I think he has been in some difficult situations in his last couple stops. And trust me, some of that is of his own making. It's not like he's blameless here. But you have to remember that's what's happened. And so when we say, oh, what happened at the back part of Kevin Durant's career? You know, it's a little muffled on this, you know, series of teams. But I actually think him going to Houston was a really smart move.
Starting point is 00:15:50 I was not a fan of the front office, not replacing Fred Van Bleet when he got hurt because I think you really saw what not having a point guard did to the Houston Rockets. They were, you know, sort of predicted to be the number two team in the West this year. And that's certainly not what happened. We'll have to see next year if they get, you know, a point guard back if Amman Thompson takes another leap. what Kevin Durant can do for them then? The Yonnes sweepstakes will be interesting. Oh, yeah.
Starting point is 00:16:17 The Knicks gave up five first rounders for Mikhail Bridges. Good player, not exceptional. Didn't have a great year necessarily. They didn't shoot it as well. OG had a good year. But Kat wasn't as good. I think the Knicks, I don't see him beating. I don't think there as physical as the pistons.
Starting point is 00:16:32 I don't think there is gifted. I don't, no bench. Cat had a down year by relative to Kat's standards. He should have a good first round. the Hawks are not really set up in a way. Yeah, that's kind of going to be the hole in their game. If they just do a traditional center on him, he will go to town. But if they beat the Hawks.
Starting point is 00:16:50 But that doesn't mean that they're winning the second round, to your point. But here's the problem. They beat the Hawks. And then they're highly competitive, maybe get a bad break or a bad call in the second round. They still don't have a bench. They don't defend the three. Brunson is small. Small guys don't win titles.
Starting point is 00:17:07 I almost feel like their second matchup, they kind of need to get housed. And everybody goes, okay, we ran this thing. Hey, we make the playoffs. We're fun to watch. You can't deny, they're fun to watch. I think you go all in for Janus. I think he matches. So you think if they just get crushed in the second round, it's better for them?
Starting point is 00:17:29 If it's just infinitely clear. Right. Guys. I think it's going to be an infinitely clear situation either way. Jim Dolan almost never talks publicly, and he went on the radio a couple months ago and said, again, after we were already into this next season, after we already saw some of the tumult and the up and down in consistency, he said this team should win a championship. Of course this team should make it to the finals. That is what he thinks. He fired Tom Thibodeau last year for making it to game six of the Eastern Conference finals and nearly beating the Indiana Pacers. So if that success was enough to make him clean house, on one level. I think even if they come really close in the second round and lose, you could still see some cleaning house and switching around. We'll just have to see. I think the expectation for them is they at least get to the conference finals. And if that doesn't
Starting point is 00:18:17 happen, I think you'll see some real shifting around. I'd vote when the MVP. I think it's close. I don't have a problem with SGA. I think Jalen Brown had a great season. Absolutely. Who do you think wins MVP? I think it's Shay. I just think that if you look at first of all, voters who have said who they're voting for. There's just a lot of them that have voted Shea. It's a weird thing in these MVP races, and it happened last year also, where it can be a tiny margin of should it be Shea, should it be Wemby, and man, I'm someone who agonizes to the last minute on these things when I have to turn in my ballot. But if you ultimately pick the guy that most people ultimately pick, it becomes a landslide, even though everyone personally, like,
Starting point is 00:19:00 was really twisted about it. What works against Wembe is we feel he's going to win eight of them. Yes. Well, yeah. And also, look, Shea played more minutes. He carried his team through major, major injuries. They finished with a better record. I mean, there's all kinds of things. His numbers are off the charts, the consistency. I call SGA the metronome. That's my nickname for him, because he is just reliable as rain. Right. And he was able to do that throughout the season, where Wembe, look, was spectacular. I mean, no bigger Wemby fan than me. But he doesn't play him. He plays 28 minutes. But yeah, there's just a lot of little things that if you have add to make, and I will have to make that little, which one edges each other out call, I will
Starting point is 00:19:38 probably go with Shea. I'm going to reserve it until I actually put it on the ballot, but I think a lot of voters are going to be agonizing, but the majority of voters, and probably the great majority of voters, are going to go toward Shea and therefore to look like landslide when that's just not how the voters felt. Yeah, I don't know if there's going to be, I guess Minnesota, as a six seed could knock somebody off. Is there a feeling, and when you talk around the league, to Detroit's still super young, but they're so physical, they've got their star. Is there any, I mean, it's hard to have upsets in seven games series. Is there a feeling anybody is vulnerable?
Starting point is 00:20:13 I mean, Detroit is a question just because they've got to prove it, right? They've been fantastic this season. Cade is, you know, a bona fide superstar. I cannot believe he is not going to be eligible for all NBA awards. It just breaks my heart. But the offense can sometimes be a challenge for them. And that's really what we're going to see tested in the playoffs, especially when opposing coaches can really game plan against the things you can do.
Starting point is 00:20:37 And that is the question for me. Detroit, excellent team defends their butts off. They're young. But, yeah, but are they going to be able to offensively keep up in seven-game series after seven-game series? Rachel Nichols. All right. Are you going to the game tonight? Oh, I am going to the game tonight.
Starting point is 00:20:53 By the time I walk off this set, will you just forget it happens since you're a look-forward guy? I just want to know what's happening here. I'll watch tonight. I need to be more sentimental. Yeah, come on, man. I know. I am with my pets, I think, maybe. I don't know. Childhood issues, no reason to get deep into these. Rachel Nichols joining us. We're in L.A. It's the herd.
Starting point is 00:21:15 Be sure to catch live editions of the herd weekdays in noon Eastern, 9 a.m. Pacific. Hey, it's Rob Parker and Kelvin, Washington from the odd couple on Fox Sports Radio. And in addition to hearing us live weeknights from 7 to 10 p.m. Eastern on Fox Sports Radio, we are excited to announce brand new YouTube channel for the show. That's right. You can now watch the Odd Couple live on YouTube every day. All you got to do, search Odd Couple FSR on YouTube.
Starting point is 00:21:46 Again, YouTube, just search Odd Couple FSR. Check us out on YouTube and subscribe. Hey, it's us, the Jonas Brothers, and guess what? We have some big news. What's the news, new? Huge news. We created our own podcast called, Hey Jonas, we invented a podcast.
Starting point is 00:22:03 Well, we didn't invent it. We just contributed to it. We're the first people to do podcasts. Pretty, yeah, pretty wide range of podcasts throughout there. But this one's extra special. So how did we actually come up with a name, Hey Jonas, guys? I honestly don't remember. I think it was on a call about what we should call it.
Starting point is 00:22:20 Oh, we were thinking I'm originally calling it one of the early names of our band. Before Jonas Brothers was... This is how you guys remember it going down? Yes. I have a very different memory of this. We were talking about a thing, a bit for the podcast, where people could call in and say, hey, Jonas. And then I wrote down on my little notepad, Hey Jonas,
Starting point is 00:22:40 and offered it up as a potential title for the podcast. But thanks for remembering that, guys. Listen to Hey Jonas on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcast. Just listen. We don't care where you hear it. Another podcast from some SNL, late-night comedy guy, not quite. Unhumor me with Robert Smygel and friends.
Starting point is 00:22:59 Me and hilarious guests from Bob Odenkirk to David Letter help make you funnier. This week, my guest, S&L's Mikey Day and head writer, Streeter Seidel, help an a cappella band with their between songs banter. Where does your group perform? We do some retirement homes.
Starting point is 00:23:14 Those people are starving for banter. Listen to humor me with Robert Smigel and friends on the I-Heart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Last night, a blown call changed a game. This morning, the internet lost its mind. Highlights are trending, opinions are flying, and nobody's telling you exactly what happens.
Starting point is 00:23:32 That's where SportsSlice comes in. I'm Timbo. Every episode, we're cutting through the noise, breaking down the plays, the controversies, and the stories behind the headlines. We go straight to the source, the athlete themselves, their locker room stories, their reactions, the stuff nobody gets to hear. The laughs, the drama, the triumphs, the moments that never make the highlight real. From viral moments to historic games, from buzzer-beaters to controversial calls, we break it down,
Starting point is 00:23:57 give you context, and ask the questions everybody wants answered. Sports Slice brings you closer to the action with stories told by the people who live them. Listen to Sports Slice on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcast. And for more, follow Timbo Slic Life 12 and the TikTok podcast network on TikTok. The French Open is one of the toughest tests in tennis. And I know firsthand because I competed there myself. I'm Renee Stubbs. And on the Renee Stubbs tennis podcast, I'm breaking down everything happening at Roland Garris.
Starting point is 00:24:28 every match, every upset, and what it really takes to win on Clay. Jenshin win. I mean, she went down in three to Rabakina, but I'm delighted. She's an outsider to win the French for me. And she likes Clay. Listen, Lina Rabakina is arguably the best player in the world right now, and I actually can win on any surface. Because if she's serving, well, good luck.
Starting point is 00:24:50 Consider this your court side seat to the French Open. Listen to the Renee Stubbs tennis podcast on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts or wherever you get your podcasts. Presented by Capital One, founding partner of IHeart Women's Sports. Good to have Rachel Nichols on. Ethan Strauss stopped by. I thought it was a really good night for the NBA. I thought it was a lot of fun. Bruce Feldman is in studio in our last hour, a lot of draft stuff to talk about.
Starting point is 00:25:16 Yeah, I'm going to work on that sentimental thing. I really, you know what? Sometimes I've got to just take a deep breath and just wrap my arms around. You don't have to dive into the past. You can just appreciate where you came from. All right. Maybe I don't. Oh, damn. Wow.
Starting point is 00:25:32 Jay Mac with the news. No, no, no. Turn on the news. This is the herd line news. Check your phone. I think your sister's texting. Colin, what is wrong with you? I get along with my sister. All right, let's go to the NBA.
Starting point is 00:25:46 We're the Orlando Magic. Big one tonight for the Magic against the Sixers. No Joelle and Bede, of course, because it's the postseason. Just kidding. Magic have an issue. They don't like their coach. Well, they got some problems. And there is an unnamed.
Starting point is 00:25:57 star on the magic. There's one big star, who apparently is feuding with the coach. We know it's Palo Bancaro. They didn't name him in the report. But the report claims that that star is going to demand a trade if Jamal Mosley's not fired. I think they're the most disappointing team in the league.
Starting point is 00:26:13 Oh, you and I both love them. No, I had them in the Eastern Conference Finals. Thought that be the new Pacers. I thought Bain was perfect. I thought Orlando was going to be a little bit well, I can't say this yet. A little bit like San Antonio, where they get a star.
Starting point is 00:26:32 They're not immediately better. And then all of a sudden they add a veteran piece, and you're like, you look up and you're like, oh, can they get to the finals four out of six years battling Boston? And I'll tell you, it's, they don't like the coach. They don't. Something's wrong because the Suggs, Bain backcourt should be awesome. Yeah. A Sugg's great defender.
Starting point is 00:26:51 He's heard a lot. Bain's been excellent. I like Bencaro a lot. I like their roster. Look at the history mostly. and I don't want to bag on the guy. I don't know them at all, but they underperform this year.
Starting point is 00:27:02 This is a step back for sure. And they underperformed from the first month. And that's in the east, which is not great. Anyways, you got to wager tonight. This line has kind of swung.
Starting point is 00:27:13 What is the line? I'm pretty sure Sixers were underdogs and now they're favored. But again, it's like one or two. I honestly, if there's a coaching issue and a chemistry issue,
Starting point is 00:27:26 I would take the Sixers. Interesting. Because the Sixers have limitations, but play their butt off. Matchup-wise, I think the magic are going to be okay against Maxie and Paul George and Edgecombe. I kind of like the magic here. I definitely like the clippers on the other one. I'm not betting it. Remember last night I told you Khan Canipal Unders?
Starting point is 00:27:44 Remember I said that on the show? Two for 12. NBA playing, easy to bet. All right, let's move on. That's enough playing. Let's go to the NFL where the Cowboys franchise tagged George Pickens earlier this off season. but there's a lot of rumors still swirling around him. Remember, he's not going to show up for voluntary OTAs.
Starting point is 00:28:00 And people are wondering, could the Cowboys trade him? Well, Stephen Jones was asked about it. Here's what he had to say. Have you guys, I know you said it'll heat up a lot last week. Can you confirm or deny if you guys have gotten any calls for first round pickoffers for George Pickens thus far? Yeah, you know, you hate to get into things like that. But no, we've had no one call, you know, with interest in George Pickens. Yeah, well
Starting point is 00:28:27 You saw what he can do First half of the season His numbers were incredible And I also saw him Disappeared Yes There's just I'm telling you
Starting point is 00:28:37 The minute Debo Samuel Brandon Iuke The minute A.J. Brown The minute Stefan Diggs I get a bad vibe With wide receivers
Starting point is 00:28:47 I'm out So let me Let me pause To you There's too many good College wide receivers We're going to have Three or Four
Starting point is 00:28:53 I mean watch Mackay Lendings Ohio State, Carnell Tate, Taylor out of Arizona State, Cooper out of Indiana. You have four guys drafted in the first round. They're all going to put up good numbers as rookies. So let me ask you. Okay, so the chiefs are at 29 in the draft. We know the wide receiver room is weak.
Starting point is 00:29:12 Do you consider giving up the 29 pick for pickets? I take Omar Cooper of Indiana if he's available. Okay, let's go to the Patriots at 31. I would take Cooper. I think Omar Cooper is the most underrated. wide receiver in the draft. Next five years, Cooper. I mean, those teams are close to a Super Bowl, not the Chiefs.
Starting point is 00:29:31 The Patriots, they lost in the Super Bowl. No, no, there's no, not doing it. I was just trying to make a good argument. I would be a boring GM. I would trade down constantly. I want more picks, more bites at the end. I just, I think, you know, the reality is it's a numbers game. 30% of the first round ends up underperforming.
Starting point is 00:29:49 I mean, there's only, if you told me there's three players in this draft, four. Here's the four players that I absolutely know we're going to be good NFL players. And I'm not talking Fernando Mendoza going to Super Bowl. Oh, he's a limited. Fernando Mendoza is going to be a good player. Caleb Down's going to be a good player. Right. Love's going to be a very good running back. And David Bailey is going to be a very good edge rush. So wait, are Vell Reese not in that group?
Starting point is 00:30:13 No. He didn't have a defined position. Oh. And then I would also say also, again, not a star. I can't see the corner from LSU or Mackay Lemon or or. or sunny styles, not being really good players. But if you told me, four guys won't be no bust. Mendoza, Caleb Downs, Bailey, and Love. What does no busts mean? It means they're going to be highly, they're going to make an all-pro team.
Starting point is 00:30:43 They're going to be highly effective players. Highly effective. Now, now, Bailey end up, he'll end up being a pro bowler on another team if the jet strapped him. He'll be darnled on defense. Where did he go? Then he ends up winning Super Bowl. Took 90 minutes for the first jet shot when he walks into the studio. All right, let's go to the final story, AMC East Cullen.
Starting point is 00:31:02 Keon Coleman and the Bills, this was such a wacky thing. I cannot recall an owner taking a shot at Keon Coleman, the way Terry Pagula did earlier this offseason. Yeah, he did. Anyways, apparently fences are being mended. And Bill's GM, Brandon Bean, is now saying, we feel confident that the maturity level is headed where it needs to be. We believe in his skill set.
Starting point is 00:31:23 So I don't know if this is just lip-shed. service, but this is a big turn because the owner essentially said the GM didn't want him. So they, they, Brandon Bean takes a lot of crap. But I got to give, I got to give, well, let me give him credit. So most of their talents in offense. So if I said to you, there's a team. They're great at quarterback, left tackle, star back, O line's actually pretty good, have a slot receiver who's overproduced from his draft pick,
Starting point is 00:31:57 and they just made a deal for a number one receiver. You'd be like, well, at least they're making the moves on the right side of the ball. So when they get DJ Moore, who don't listen to anybody, he never gets hurt. The reason his numbers dipped is because they went and got Luther Burden. Colston Loveland popped as a star tied in. DJ Moore didn't get the looks because they, the seventh round running back at a Rutgers.
Starting point is 00:32:21 They just have so many weapons. They have two tight ends, two receivers. It allows them with Keon Coleman. I think it was actually brilliant GMing. By bringing in DJ Moore, now I don't ask much from Keon Coleman. Twice a game, you're the over-the-top guy. And so then you take the stress of Coleman, the GM, the quarter. Because what happened last year is big expectations.
Starting point is 00:32:48 He's not going to be a volume guy. He doesn't have a volume personality. That doesn't mean he can't be a nine Des Bryant, eight, nine touchdown a game guy or a touchdown a year guy. Unpredictable, moody, like pickings can disappear. But by getting DJ Moore, he actually becomes a bit of a great gadget player. Like worthy of Kansas City, but bigger, stronger,
Starting point is 00:33:12 and a more NFL high-end body. I like that idea. The problem is this DJ Moore thing. There are reports out there now. that the bears were going to cut him if they couldn't find a trade party. Well, that's because they're so deep offensively, and they have to clear up space
Starting point is 00:33:28 because they wanted to get Max Crosby. And so is it good GMing to give up a high draft pick for a guy who was going to get cut? People are knocking beat for it. I don't know. Maybe then DJ Moore would have said, I don't want to go to Buffalo. I want to go, you know, Kansas City. DJ Moore is a very quiet personality.
Starting point is 00:33:43 And so in Chicago, because all the attention was on Ben Johnson and Caleb Williams. And the franchise is that DJ, Jay Moore quietly went out, never misses games, makes big plays. I think he's just one of those guys. He's a workman-like pro, and I think people will go, well, his numbers have come down, contextualize it.
Starting point is 00:34:02 I think he's a really good player. I don't think the Bears needed him. And that's not a knock on him. They just didn't need him anymore. Well, they needed him anymore. Yeah, they could move on. But let me get, so you really think he's a one, Colin? I think he's a low-end one.
Starting point is 00:34:17 Is he drawing over the top? Hey, we need a safety to keep it out. That's why they went and got it. They've got Keon Coleman. What they need is a durable volume receiver that can do the sideline routes. They got the slot. They've got great tight ends. They've got the back.
Starting point is 00:34:31 They don't need him to be an over-the-top guy. And for the record, in December and January, you don't throw it over-the-top much. Didn't Coleman have a touchdown against the Broncos? He delivered one big play. That's probably what he'll be. A big play specialist. A touchdown every other game. E.J. Moore's and the slot guy, those are our volume guys.
Starting point is 00:34:53 Just don't be a headache. That's right. Don't skip practice. Don't be slate for meetings. Jay Mack with the news. Well, that's the news. And thanks for stopping by. The Herd Lie News. One more Herd?
Starting point is 00:35:06 The herd streams 24 hours a day, seven days a week, within the IHeart Radio app. Search Herd to listen live or on demand whenever you'd like. Hey, it's us, the Jonas brothers. And guess what? We have some big news. What's the news, new? Huge news. we created our own podcast called Hey Jonas.
Starting point is 00:35:23 We invented a podcast? Well, we didn't invent it. We just contributed to it. We're the first people to do podcasts. Pretty, yeah, pretty wide range of podcasts throughout there. But this one's extra special. So how do we actually come up with a name Hey Jonas, guys? I honestly don't remember.
Starting point is 00:35:39 I think it was on a call about what we should call it. Well, we were thinking I'm originally calling it one of the early names of our band before Jonas Brothers. This is how you guys remember it going down? Yes. I have a very different memory of this. We were talking about a thing, a bit for the podcast, people could call in and say, hey, Jonas. And then I wrote down on my little notepad,
Starting point is 00:36:02 Hey Jonas, and offered it up as a potential title for the podcast. Me and hilarious guests from Bob Odenkirk to David Letterman help make you funnier.
Starting point is 00:36:26 This week, my guest, S&L's Mikey Day and head writer, Streeter Seidel, help an a cappella band with their between songs banter. Where does your group perform? We do some retirement homes. Those people are starving for banter. Listen to humor me with Robert Smigel and Friends on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Starting point is 00:37:44 I'm Renee Stubbs. And on the Renee Stubbs tennis podcast, I'm breaking down. on everything happening at Roland Garris. Every match, every upset, and what it really takes to win on Clay. Jen she won. I mean, she went down at three to Rabakina, but I'm delighted. She's an outsider to win the French for me. And she likes Clay.
Starting point is 00:38:03 Listen, Lena Rubakina is arguably the best player in the world right now. And I actually can win on any surface. Because if she's serving, well, good luck. Consider this your court side seat to the French Open. Listen to the Renee Stubbs tennis podcast on the Eye Heart radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Presented by Capital One, founding partner of IHeart Women's Sports. The fastest racing on Earth hits the West Coast as Alex Pillow.
Starting point is 00:38:31 Joseph New Garden and the stars of IndyCar take on the streets of Long Beach. The road to the Indy 500 continues Sunday at 530 Eastern only on 5. One of the reasons I'm not a big believer in sentimentality in sports, a great example. Dabo, Sweeney coaches Clemson football. he's like, I'm not doing the transfer portal. Well, they can't compete with Miami. They don't have the players. The late Bobby Knight, I'm not doing one and done.
Starting point is 00:38:55 Well, then you're done. You know, Coach K famously did not like the one and done era and then came out and said, I'm getting beat by teams who recruit one and done guys. I'm into it. So, I mean, I'm, you know, I'm somebody that's just not, I'll bail on a restaurant if I go back-to-back times and the service is bad. you know, even if I love it. Like, what have you well done for me lately? Like, I'll, I'll move off that. So I'm loyalty is a two-way street. So Steph Curry, I mean, he didn't play, I was looking at up this morning.
Starting point is 00:39:28 He hasn't played over 30 minutes since January. But he is so popular that, you know, they're not going to move off him. He has a minute restriction tonight. And I think he's been a great warrior. And I'm not saying you trade him. But Bob Myers, he didn't want any part of this. And he left and they've signed $275 million in contracts, and they're not close to Oklahoma City. They're not close to San Antonio's future. They're not close to Boston. And Steve Kerr said sometimes it's just, it's about more than that. Where we are as a team, as an organization, most important thing for me is to, for guys to recognize that there's beauty in the struggle. There's beauty in what we're trying to accomplish right now. You know, no longer the 17 warriors, you know, dominating the league. We are a fading dynasty. We know that.
Starting point is 00:40:24 Everybody knows that. Listen, it's not that you're a fading dynasty. You have the oldest team in the league. I looked it up. Bottom three and fast break points. You're slow. Bottom five and points in the paint. And you haven't won 50 games in four years. So I don't think there's any beauty in that. I mean, that's my take is I think this argument was better two years ago. When everybody kind of thought, you know, if Steph gets healthy, last two years, what are we doing here? I often say, fall in love with your family,
Starting point is 00:40:57 fall in like with your sports stars. You got to be, and I'm not in any way saying you've got to move Steph because he's still a great player. But, you know, Ethan Strauss, who covered the Warriors for years, sort of on the dilemma they are at with Curry. This situation is depressing in subtle ways with the Warriors. And in a way, it might even be better if Steph had a more natural decline. We didn't plan overall for some of these millennial NBA superstars to hang on for as long as they did.
Starting point is 00:41:27 So we've got this reality where he's still great. And there's this impetus to win and make his career as much as it can be while he's still wearing a warrior's uniform. But at the same time, it's also what's preventing them from the renewal problem. from the life cycle. Yeah, it's not going to ding Steph Curry. I mean, to me, if you did an all-time starting five in league history, you know, Magic at the point, Jordan at the two, LeBron at the three, to me, Larry Bird at the four, Kareem at the five.
Starting point is 00:42:00 And I think your second team, all-N-B-A would be Steph Curry at the point, you know, maybe Kobe at the two, Tim Duncan somewhere on that team, maybe, you know, Russell, Akeem, whatever you want to do. Always think Rick Berry gets jobbed in all these all-time teams. So I think Curry is kind of viewed outside of magic is the second most influential point guard of all time.
Starting point is 00:42:26 So it doesn't think his legacy. He's beloved. He's great. It's not a knock on him. But it's the organization. It's just keeping your arms around something that has not been viable in four years. Well, it's interesting.
Starting point is 00:42:37 You use the phrase, I think, you don't want to move on from Curry. And I... He's still great players. He's still great. And I understand he's everything. You bet greatest dynasty in NBA history.
Starting point is 00:42:48 Your best time ever with the Warriors. I would ask him, do you want to stay here? Yeah, I think he does. We can't, we cannot put a title contender around you financially. I think Curry's made more money than people realize because of the, how beloved he is. I'm guessing here, I bet you Steph Curry has been on IPOs. Oh, yeah, he's wealthy beyond. think he you know when you go to a celebrity net worth oh that's i i guarantee you step curries is
Starting point is 00:43:16 under value they say i'm rich on there and i'm not remotely rich yeah i'm i'm here to tell you step curry more than any pro athlete is richer than his celebrity net worth he's got i mean do you know step curry i mean silicon val i just read a story the other day and they were talking about no san francisco doesn't stay down for long they got a new mayor he's cleaned it up and in the and the rents now because of AI, it is where every smart international kid wants to live. Well, don't you think Steph Curry is a global superstar? He has had access to the most brilliant engineers, most brilliant tech people and AI of any athlete in the history of American or global sports. Those Silicon Valley guys, those are sweet guys at the Warrior Games.
Starting point is 00:44:03 I don't think he'd ever walk away on that. I think he's part of a unique all-time club. So I'm not, I think Kerr's brilliant. I think Curry's brilliant. But they're not brilliant enough to pull the warriors out of this situation and get them contending. Well, they missed on Wiseman and Kaminga and, you know. So why wouldn't you just say, hey, guys, we love Curry. He's at all time great, but we want to see him competing.
Starting point is 00:44:27 If anybody wants him, you know, let's do it. I think it's hard. It's got very much a Derek Jeter field. Derek was such a part of the city. But the Yankees were never down like this at the end of Jeter. they were always in contention. Yeah. You know?
Starting point is 00:44:41 Listen, Bob Myers, you see him right there on the screen. He didn't want any part of this. He didn't want. He knew what was coming. Yeah, and Bob's a classy, great guy. He didn't want any part of this. And I'm not talking about shipping him to New Orleans for Zion or something. But like, honestly, La Mello Ball last night, he was crazy and taking 31 shots.
Starting point is 00:44:59 He can't play a lick of defense. No, it's really interesting about how teams, like take the Boston Celtics. Great GM. great culture, really an ascending head coach, two stars. They always make the right personnel moves. Lamello ball, if he was a Celtic, they would trade him. Of course. He doesn't play defense.
Starting point is 00:45:19 He's not a team guy. He's a mess, but he's wildly fun. In Charlotte, he's their Jordan. Perfect. In Boston, they would find a sucker on the market and get six first round picks for him. So there are certain players that work in certain markets. Elway in Denver to me. Like John Elway was not terrible at the end.
Starting point is 00:45:40 It's like that's who he is. He's a Bronco. He had car dealerships. He's a Bronco. Jeter felt like that in New York. And I think almost every player is tradable. Kobe almost went to the Bulls at one point. Curry's on a short list of, I mean, Brady left New England.
Starting point is 00:45:56 There's only been three or four athletes in my life that I think it would be hard to live in San Francisco and also engineer a trade of Curry. And I think everybody know, and I also think, again, I think Steph is so tied into that community and the wealth and the fabric of the creative Silicon Valley culture. I don't think he could ever learn. I mean, again, this is not Elijah Wan going to the Raptors at the end of his career. Celebrity Network.com says Steph has worth $240 million.
Starting point is 00:46:23 No way. It's way more than that. Double. Maybe triple-tri-t. Now, he lives in California, so they've taken half. Oh, come on. By the way, you were bagging on Silicon Valley. I was reading about how Elon Musk is like, I'm getting out of Silicon Valley. We're going to Texas. Guess who's back in Silicon Valley recruiting the best and brightest.
Starting point is 00:46:42 Elon Musk, that's where all the smart guys are. You got to go there. All right. Here's the NFL draft order. It is a, as of tomorrow, the NFL draft is one week away. There is a story today that the Dallas Cowboys, I wouldn't suggest it, want to move up into the top 10. Now, the last two teams to do it, the Vikings with J.J. McCarthy and the Jags with Travis Hunter, and I think both privately would say today it was a mistake.
Starting point is 00:47:09 So there is, Mel Kuyper is out saying Dallas would move from 12 to 6. Oh, wait, there's always a sucker. By the way, some Cowboys fans were reminding me the last time Jerry traded up. It ended up being from Mo Claiborne, the quarterback from LSU. Yeah, remember that? He wasn't terrible, was he? I mean, he was great in college, and the pros, he was fine, but he wasn't like trade-up guy. Yeah, I don't think Fernando Mendoza is the only player I trade up for in the draft.
Starting point is 00:47:37 If, if, and I would use, you know, and if I really knew. I saw that teams are reaching out to the Raiders about Mendoza. Yeah, they're not. Now, what the Raiders are going to do, because they drafted a couple of receivers last year, one out of Tennessee, one out of TCU. Yeah. Both are apparently, like, legendary workers. I think the, and they went and got the Minnesota Vikings.
Starting point is 00:47:57 number three receiver and nailer. Solid. Here's my take. The Raiders are going to take Fernando Menos and they're going to trade down with their second picks. I think they really like certain spots.
Starting point is 00:48:11 Well, they would love. I'm sure they would move forward. I think they're going to trade down. So they have one of the top picks. I think they have the fourth or fifth pick in the second round. And Omar Cooper is who they would take of available. I don't think he's going to be available.
Starting point is 00:48:24 That goes this guy. Yeah. Omar Cooper is, if he gets out of the first, first year. He'll be the Nick Amonwari that you'll look up after a year and go, how did Omar Cooper go second pick in the second round? By the way, if the Jets pair Garrett Wilson and Omar Cooper, that's a dynamic wide receiver tan. You don't have a coach or a quarterback. And we'll get arch next year maybe in the draft. I'm one to the 27 draft, honestly. I'm working on my mock
Starting point is 00:48:48 for 2020. It's loaded with quarterbacks. Have you ever stopped me if you've heard this before? Next year's draft is stacked with quarterback. The quarterback that Ty Simpson's is getting a lot of talk at the end of the first round. No. Garrett Nussmeyer, who's a little wild for LSU. How many times does he bench last season? I think twice. He's inconsistent.
Starting point is 00:49:07 Hey, I'll give you my sleeper. I haven't bet it yet, but I'm looking at second quarterback taken. Drew Aller, Penn State. Oh, God, no. Okay. You've already bet that? I have not. I said I'm looking at it.
Starting point is 00:49:20 No, I wouldn't do that. I'd go bet Duquesne basketball overs next year. Remember, you like quarterbacks are big and strapping. I do. Drew Aller's like 6, 25, 2, 35, 25, 1, 1, 1,000. walks in the room and like, ah, that's a quarterback.
Starting point is 00:49:29 No, no, that's not going to happen. He's not mobile, but he's got a cannon for an arm. Did you see him in his pro day? I watched him play six times. I loved him two years ago, and then I sold my stock.
Starting point is 00:49:39 Might have sold a little early. You're willing to make, I bet sure things. There's no such thing as a sure thing. I'm betting the New York Giants over next year. I've already bought three jet skis and six pair of hipster jeans.
Starting point is 00:49:56 I've already, I already won, that bet. Wow. I haven't even made the bet and I've won it. I'm spending that money. I'm going to buy another set of clubs. Or maybe go to the clubs. Hey guys, it's us. The Jonas Brothers. I'm Joe. I'm Kevin. And I'm Nick. And guess what?
