This is an I-Heart podcast.
Guaranteed Human.
Another podcast from some SNL, late-night comedy guy, not quite.
Unhumor me with Robert Smygel and friends.
Me and hilarious guests from Bob Odenkirk to David Letterman
help make you funnier.
This week, my guest, SNL's Mikey Day and head writer, Streeter Seidel,
help an a cappella band with their between songs banter.
Where does your group perform?
We do some retirement homes.
Those people are starving for banter.
Listen to humor me with Robert Smigel
and friends on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.
Imagine an Olympics where doping is not only legal, but encouraged. It's the enhanced games.
Some call it grotesque. Others say it's unleashing human potential. Either way, the podcast's
superhuman documented it all, embedded in the games and with the athletes for a full year.
Within probably 10 days, I'd put on 10 pounds. I was having trouble stopping the muscle growth.
Listen to Superhuman on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.
Hey, this is Robert from the Stuff to Blow Your Mind podcast.
Joe and I are both lifelong Star Wars fan, so we're celebrating May the 4th with a brand new week of fun, thought-provoking Star Wars-related episodes.
Join us as we tackle science and culture topics from a galaxy far, far away, such as the biology of tauntons and wampas on the ice planet hot, or the practicality and corporate business sense of the Sith rule of,
of two. Listen to Stuff to Bole Your Mind on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever
you get your podcasts. Thanks for listening to The Heard podcast. Be sure to catch us live every
weekday on Fox Sports Radio in noon to 3 Eastern, 9 a.m. to noon Pacific. Find your local
station for the herd at Fox Sports Radio.com or stream us live every day on the IHeart
Radio app by searching Fox Sports Radio or FSR. You're listening to Fox Sports Radio.
Here we go.
It is hour two.
It is a Friday.
It is so great to have you in.
This is the herd.
Wherever you may be,
and however you may be watching or listening,
thank you for making us part of your day.
So, J-Mack, people sometimes will say they hate stuff,
but if they consume it, they don't hate it that much.
You ever had anybody say,
McIntyre, you're an idiot.
And then you go to their Twitter.
account they follow you. Well, why are they following an idiot? How do you know him an idiot if you're not
consuming my content? Right, right, right. And so people say things all the time. And it's very,
Donald Trump made it very fashionable. All news is fake. Of course, unless it was complimenting him,
then it was real news. But if they ever criticized him, it was fake news. And my takeaway is,
in sports media anyway, we're right a lot. And so there are criticisms that we're in the media going,
overboard on the hype for Victor Wembenyama.
I'm going to give you the eight professional athletes of my life that have been the most hyped.
I'll start with John Elway, went to Stanford.
Now, we didn't live in the world we live in now, but I'm old enough to remember the hype around John Elway.
He was called the greatest prospect ever.
He hit.
Tiger Woods, 11 years old.
had an agent, although not disclosed he did.
I was told by people who represented him.
Tiger Woods was hyped.
Serena Williams, before she started winning majors,
we were told this is the greatest female tennis player ever.
It's coming.
Yeah, that's exactly what happened.
LeBron, Bryce Harper, Ken Griffey Jr.,
I think Trevor Lawrence, after he won a national title as a freshman,
it was two years of, oh, he'll be the number one pick, and Wembe.
Eight for eight.
Now, a lot of athletes are hyped,
but I'm talking when the media shifts it into a year ahead of being drafted,
oh my, this could be the greatest ever.
I remember hearing about Pulisic.
It wasn't this level because soccer hype and
America is more niche.
But I remember hearing very early about Polisic.
He is absolutely the best most talented soccer player in the history of America.
I know we're fake news when you don't like the opinion.
But the eight most hyped athletes in my life, baseball, Griffey, the kid, and Bryce Harper,
cover of Sports Illustrated, 16.
They're both great, both Hall of Famers.
And so I know it's just easy.
Let me throw another one out there.
I don't remember this because this was late 60s.
And I was born in 1964.
The first games I ever remember watching were in 1971, 72.
I can remember watching a Laker game on CBS, Jerry West, Gale, Goodrich, Blazers, Lakers.
I think those were the players, an old wilt with a headband.
It was like 70, 72.
And then I remember watching on a black and white television in my room next to my neighbor's name was Jeff, watching the Washington Miami Dolphin Super Bowl, Garo your premium, Dolphins 1 14-7.
I may have watched sports before that, but those are my first memories of watching sports on TV.
I think the CBS was the network that had the NBA.
It may have been Brent Musburger.
I don't remember.
And it was a Blazer-Laker game.
And it was the old Lakers.
They ended up winning a championship.
But I think they were in Portland.
and I think they lost.
And then the Washington, Miami Dolphin Super Bowl,
Bob Greasy, Paul Warfield, Larry Zonka, those dolphin teams.
And so I would put in, so again, my point being,
apparently Kareem, Liu Al-Sinder, Kareem, pre-John Elway,
and I wasn't around to see it, but apparently they were saying,
when Kareem was a freshman at UCLA, this is going to be the greatest basketball player,
ever seen. So that would be nine for nine, but I wasn't around for that one. I do remember a little
bit of Elway, a little bit of Elway in the hype and that circus. So I don't think we're going
overboard on Wembe. I have never seen an 18-year-old basketball player, 19-year-old player,
that size with those moves. I remember Sam Bowie. He was gifted. I remember Yao Ming. Most of us do.
talented. I have never seen this. I mean, the kid moves like Kevin Durant and he's five inches
taller. Like, I think he's going to be a 2010 guy right out of the league. Am I worried a little
bit about his size in year one because he's thin, his frame? Absolutely. I've said this with
Chet Holmgren last year and Victor this year. I'd put him on a 58 game schedule. I would not have
him play a lot of back-to-backs. There's a big difference between playing the European one game a week
and this schedule and the national travel.
It's a lot.
So I think with body types like this, the first year to year and a half in the league,
this is not going to be a championship team.
Let's just keep the franchise healthy.
So Holmgren got hurt immediately.
That's what I worry about.
But I do not think it's excessive.
I remember I was just reading a story this morning.
Mike Torrico was on the coverage.
Tom Tolbert was on the coverage.
And Mike Torrico's quote about when LeBron
got drafted. He said, that night, it felt legit. You still hadn't seen the guy playing in college,
but it felt legit. I remember watching LeBron's video in high school and being like, my God,
it looks like an NBA player. I can remember a story where Tim Legler does an excellent job
on ESPN. He's an NBA guy. And Tim Legler telling me a story that when he was in Philadelphia,
he lived in Philly. He walked into a gym, he used to play, going to a gym play, and he saw Kobe Bryant.
And Kobe was just, it was old NBA guys. It was like NBA guys and guys that were really high
in college guys. And Kobe Bryant was the best player on the floor and he was 16. And he's like, listen,
and Tim said like basketball talent's different. Football talent needs size and girth and experience.
Baseball talent, very few 19-year-olds dominated sport. But in basketball, if you've got it, you've got it.
And he was like, yeah, Kobe was 16. And I was.
like, what is that? Well, Wemby 1718, playing against older players and is puts on a show.
So I don't have a problem with it at all. I think the media makes a lot of mistakes and we're
imperfect, just like your local dentist or your airline pilot. We're not perfect. But when we go
into overdrive on hype, the ones that I remember, Elway, Kareem, Serena, Tiger, Trevor
Lawrence, LeBron, Bryce Harper, Wemby, they've all hit.
I mean, there's probably some we've missed on, but those really stand out as guarantees.
And again, there was some hype for Greg Oden, but he got hurt.
That doesn't mean he wouldn't have been great.
I don't think he was not close to Wembe, but I remember there was a lot of hype for Greg Oden.
I got hurt.
What do you do?
Fell apart.
So I was saying this.
So Aaron Rogers just spent time in a psychedelic conference, which I don't, you know, I don't care about psychedelics.
You want to take them, take them.
I'm not judging.
I live next to Hollywood.
People, you know, they do whatever.
they want to do. But I do think this is that new team, new city, new roster, new head coach.
This is going to be, there's got to be a lot of focus here in New York. And this would not be a
year that I would, you know, spend a lot of time doing other stuff. And I do think Aaron's gotten
into a habit that did not exist early in his career, but has later, where there's always something
else beyond football. And he wants to make sure that you know that he is very well,
versed in a lot of stuff. He can host Jeopardy. He wanted you to know that. He went in a darkness
retreat. I thought the darkness was the key. Don't tell anybody. He wanted to make sure you knew.
He wants to make sure you know about vaccines, his political candidate of choice. He wants you to know
that he doesn't like the media and he's going to create his own media company and where he stands
on religion. It's very important for Aaron to let you know how he feels about things other than football.
and this was never Aaron until Tom and Peyton started pulling away from him with titles.
And then almost as a protective mechanism, it's like, hey, I'm a lot more than football.
You weren't before Brady started stacking them.
And Peyton went to Denver and won.
So it does feel a little bit like the young person on Instagram who wants you to know what an awesome time they had last night, like the best ever.
And they put filters on it.
And here's what I had for dinner.
and it was the best dinner.
And we went to a club and it was the best club.
And we went hiking and it was the best hike.
And they want to make sure you know that they're having the best time with the best food and the best people.
And they've got a very layered life.
Happy people don't do that.
So I just, I think with Aaron, it feels weird that he's really wants you to know that he cares a lot about things beyond football.
And that is fine.
You don't have to tell us.
Just go on a retreat.
Didn't need to be public.
I don't care who you vote for for president.
I don't care.
If you want to vote for Robert F. Kennedy, go for it.
Like his wife, she was good and curb your enthusiasm.
Cheryl Hines.
She was excellent.
Did you know they were married?
Yeah.
Are they really?
I'm a big Cheryl Hines fan.
So am I, huge fan.
Has she married that guy?
Well, he's a Kennedy.
He is a Kennedy.
Have you seen some of his recent comments on the,
I'm not going to get into it?
The Rogan podcast.
Yeah, whatever.
You know, people have their feeling.
Yeah, anytime I open that pot, I just,
scroll looking through interesting things.
And when I see like that guy's name, I'm like,
let me dodge that one.
Aaron wasn't this, his first 10 years
in the league. It's a great point.
Is that he's become very much about, hey,
everybody, I have
a lot more to me than football,
which is great. I don't need
to know it. I don't need to see it.
Why are you pushing it?
Well,
on psychedelics, he would argue, because
he believes we all need to embrace them,
which I, you know, he may have
some merit with this. I don't care. I'm not saying he's
on that. I think psychedelics, I think there's a lot of smart academic, academic people,
academia world that think psychedelics are like mind forwarding, mind progressive. I'm not against
that. I know some people who have done ayahuasca and they swear that it is, you should do it.
And I'm like, I don't think I'm ready for that yet. But question, was Rogers this way in 2008,
2019, before COVID? No, yes. I think it started, I would say it started about four or five
years ago. Okay. I thought if it had started during COVID, you know, listen, that did a lot to a lot of
people. Yeah. Doesn't it feel like, though, this, I mean, it's like it's, it's, it says,
he wants you to know that he cares about a lot of stuff, and I have no problem with it. But it does
feel a bit desperate, sort of like the Instagram, hey, look at what I had for lunch and dinner and
the club and the hike. And that's okay to post that occasionally. You know, when I went on,
when I went on vacation with my son, because I think I like when Americans travel. So if I
travel, I'm like, hey, this place is cool.
You should try it out. So you're saying
I shouldn't IG when I go out to dinner
with the fan. No, no. But by the way,
if it's a great day of the beach and your kids are playing
football, that's good. That's
not wrong with it. But you don't
want to get to the level of it. You have to show everybody what
you're having every time you go out to the clubs.
Like, it's okay to go out to the clubs and not be on your phone.
It's okay. I don't need to know everything
about your day. What if I get Greg Goose bottle service?
Should I put that on the group? Because it's a brand name, you know,
it says to the ladies, it's a
message, hey, I'm getting
really expensive bottle service in the clubs.
Is that what people do?
Of course.
Come on.
Is it?
You don't think it's a sign.
Hey, ladies, look at the bottle I got.
This is expensive brand name.
Not the generic stuff.
I've never gone to a nightclub.
Stop.
Ever in your life.
Seven years in Vegas.
That's a lie.
Let's get you on a lie detector.
You've never been to a nightclub in your life.
That's a great idea for a segment.
Yeah.
Oh, can we, hey, Ryan, can we do that next week?
Next week?
You can ask me 10 questions going into the
the football season. On a lie detector? On a lie detector test. Now, it doesn't shock you or anything,
doesn't it? I'm not going to be in physical duress. That's another idea. Let's save that for July.
Okay. One more herd? The herd streams 24 hours a day, seven days a week within the IHeart

I don't care what you're saying.
Yep, that's me.
Clipper Taylor the 4th.
You might have seen the skits,
the reactions, my journey from basketball to college football, or my career in sports media.
Well, somewhere along the way, this platform became bigger than I ever imagined.

Do you remember when Diana Ross
double-tapped Little Kim's boobs at the VMAs?
Or when Kanye said that George Bush didn't like black people.
I know what you're thinking.
What the hell does George Bush got to do a little camp?
Well, you can find out on the Look Back at it podcast.
I'm Sam J.
And I'm Alex English.
Each episode, we pick a here, unpack what went down,
and try to make sense of how we survived it.
Including a recent episode with Mark Lamont Hill,
waxing all about crack in the 80s.
To be clear, 84 is big to me, not just because of crack.
I'm down to talk about crack on day, but just so you're not.
I mean, at this point, this is the second episode where we've discussed correct.
So I'm starting to see that there's a through line.
We also have AIDS on the table right now.
Thank you finishing that sentence.
I don't think there's a more important year for black people.
Really?
Yeah.
For me, it's one of the most important years for black people in American history.
Listen to look back at it on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.
This weekend, the U.S. NFL playoffs, take over.
Primetime.
Tomorrow at 8 Eastern on NBC, Michigan battles Pittsburgh for the Northern Division
Crown, then Sunday at 7 on Fox.
Birmingham will be rocking as the Stallions take on New Orleans in the southern championship
game.
It's all this weekend on NBC and Fox.
All right.
I had fun last night watching the draft.
I will say this.
I was joking with the staff this morning.
It wasn't until the 10th pick that you had a traditional basketball.
basketball power, Duke had a player drafted.
And then the 12th pick was Kentucky.
Guys play for G-Eleet and teams and names.
I have no idea what they are.
And as I was watching it, and NBA is getting much more international, I think it's good
for the league.
But it does speak to some of the issues college basketball has that the first player
taken from a traditional college basketball power was Duke at 10.
I'm not saying it's bad for the NBA.
I think it's fine.
I think any time a game is more global.
Baseball is more global now than it's ever been.
There's more good baseball players.
Basketball is more global than it's ever been.
There's more great basketball players.
I think it's good for the growth of the sport.
I love international basketball players to come in skilled, mature,
focus, driven, loyal.
I love them.
I love Yokic.
I love Yonis.
And I can't wait to watch Wemby play.
But it did strike me that you have this guy, G. Elite.
This guy plays overseas.
This guy.
And then the Duke guy goes at 10.
And it's just the ever-changing world of
basketball, which is increasingly an international game that empowers athletes that don't go
traditional routes.
Not a bad thing, just a thing.
J. Mack with the news.
No, no, no, no, no.
Turn on the news.
This is the herd line news.
Spent a lot of time this morning talking about Chris Paul, now a member of the Warriors,
after that blockbuster trade that said Jordan Poole to Washington, poor Jordan Poole.
After the news, Chris Paul was asked how he felt to be going to Golden State, and he said he
was excited. He also said he'd already spoken with Steph Curry and the two had a good
conversation. I just, I still can't get over the idea that they would add a 38-year-old
Chris Ball, who by the way is 39 next May to like give it one last shot. Is it maybe as simple
as this? Is the organization felt they had given Jordan Poole three years, three, four years,
whatever it was, and that he still had not matured.
And at some point when Steph Curry misses 20 regular season games or heads to the bench,
they just simply didn't want to put the organization's hands.
They didn't want to hand the franchise to Jordan Pool.
Because in that offense, the point guard runs it, right?
But Steph is the franchise.
We don't have a point center.
It's Steph's franchise.
And so when Steph misses 20 regular season games or goes to the bench,
after four years of Jordan Pool, he'd never mature.
He was talented when they got him.
He was more refined as a player,
but they just didn't feel comfortable giving the franchise
on those 20 regular season nights to Jordan Pool
because he doesn't elevate others and he's not mature enough.
And even though Chris Paul is old,
this morning in a playoff game, this morning,
I would take Chris Paul over Jordan Pool.
If there's a game tonight and everything's on Steff's timeline.
One game, sure.
Well, I'm saying if I had Jordan Pool and Chris Paul for a series,
you said right now, I would take Chris Paul.
Paul. Well, you don't even know if Chris Paul is going to be healthy.
No, I'm saying if he, by the way, he does play a lot of games.
If he was healthy, I would take Chris Paul over Jordan Poole.
And everything in this Warriors team is really on Steph's timeline.
And that organization just got tired of waiting for Jordan Poole to grow up.
Well, I would have waited.
And if you look at that Chris Paul series, Phoenix, Denver, Chris Paul gets hurt.
Phoenix was playing slow against Denver.
It was not working.
Chris Paul goes out.
What do they do in game three and four?
Speed things up, high scoring, and they won both games.
And I remember at the time, I think Stan Van Gundy, maybe, I don't remember the announcer was like,
they're not playing slow anymore.
They are playing up-tempo fast, and they were back in the series.
Chris Paul's going to slow down the Warriors.
They're going to become like a half-court team now.
Okay, now, let's, let's, that's a good, it's a good point.
Let me offer this.
He's going to come off the bench.
So he's not going to drive the franchise.
Secondly, is that is the organization acknowledging that the last nine years with four
titles was about pace and that our guys have gotten older and we can't play speed basketball to
win that we need to slow down a little because the idea of pace basketball when step is 28 and
draymond's 29 and it's different they cannot they looked at this and they thought guys we're not
faster than everybody we're smaller we shoot better but we're not faster than these sacramento
kings that's i was going to mention that mike brown and the kings
Remember every time they'd go to the huddle, Mike Brown's like, we got to speed up, we got to play faster.
And they were like running the old Warriors ragged.
That's right.
So the Warriors are saying, we're going to slow down the pace here a little.
That's small ball.
Now, they may still believe in small ball, but what they're basically saying is we're, Chris Paul is acknowledging.
We're going to slow down fewer mistakes with Jordan Poole, less wild and out of control,
still an elite three-point shooting team based on who they drafted.
Could you argue this was, this Jordan Pool stuff is a massive overreaction to he had a bad
playoff run and the punch to Draymond Griggs.
Because before that, Jordan Pool was instrumental in their championship run in 2020.
Okay, so let me ask you that.
That's another good question.
You're feeding me very, give me.
Well, I'm a big warrior's guy because of curry.
Okay.
So your takeaway, let me ask you this.
Have you ever had a friend or somebody maybe at the big,
lead when you owned it. You bring them on and they're immature or squirrely. But you're like,
I like what I see. And then by year three or four, you're like, oh, this is who they are. Have you
ever let go of a friend? You're like, they just can't grow up. Like they can't do it. I think they
were all in on pool. And even after the punch, I think they supported him. But I think they just
gave up. They're like, we've had you now for four, three or four years. You're still the most
trash-talking immature player on the roster.
Coming is younger.
I think Moody's younger.
Wiseman was younger, and they were more mature.
Okay, so that's fair.
But they're doing a lot of giving up, Colin.
They drafted James Wiseman.
I think he was second overall.
They took him ahead of a mellow ball.
They gave up on him like that.
They gave up on.
Just moved on.
Now Jordan Poole.
One bad off-season, the punch.
Let's move on.
I don't know.
Kuminka might be next.
Why are we bailing on things so quickly?
Why don't we let them bake?
I know Curry's on his timeline.
But you know what?
Why not give up on Clay Thompson?
All right.
Who look washed in the entire postseason.
You can't even argue that.
And I know his dad consumes a lot of media, let's just say, and he reaches out to people he's not happy with.
Clay was awful.
You could tell me, in some sense, he cost them the Lakers series.
You're just waiting.
When's game six Clay going to show up?
He missed every shot.
Can't put it all on pool.
No.
Okay.
That is, I, I'll say, so back to your giving up on people point.
Well, they had the draft selection, and Anthony Edwards went one, so they didn't need a mellow ball.
They had a point.
So they went Wiseman, and in the end, Wiseman, who played three college games, just wasn't refined enough.
By the way, they moved off him.
It's not like he's tearing the league up.
We're never going to be as good as we thought.
We know the NBA, you get about four guys at draft that are impactful.
So Wiseman not being great is true to NBA form.
He was a raw kid with three college games coming out.
in terms of Kaminga, they do like him.
They just don't trust him.
They like Moody.
They started trusting him in the playoffs.
They haven't given up on everybody,
but it is a very old, smart, mature system,
and young guys, DeAngelo Russell, came to Squirley out.
Okay.
Go look at their history.
Bogot, Iggy.
They like older guys.
Yeah.
You win with veterans.
Last point.
So we had thought all along that Bob Myers said,
I want to do this stuff.
You're not letting me.
I'm out of here.
Maybe I want to break up the clay.
What if the opposite was true?
The owner said, look at this track record of Bob Myers the last couple years.
Wiseman's a bust.
Cumminga can't play.
He gave Jordan Poole this huge deal.
We don't want Bob Myers back.
Did we read that incorrectly?
And maybe Myers is to blame for some of the stuff the last couple years.
Some of his picks have just not panned out at all.
It's early, but so far the returns are not good.
And the Jordan Poole contract, you're hammering it.
Nine years for titles.
Stop.
I just said the last like two or three.
Okay.
But, I mean, this is something we saw with the Jordan Bulls and the Spurs with Duncan.
It's very difficult when you have a set of three or four veteran players, Michael Jordan, Scotty Pippen, Rodman.
You have veteran proven players, Tim Duncan, Tony Parker, Manu, and you still have draft picks.
And so you take these draft picks, but you're really, a lot of times, drafting players who you think can help you now.
Like yesterday, you saw the Nuggets.
Christian Brown last year.
He can help us now.
Are you taking the best player long term?
Or the guy that can help you in more titles?
So I think there is a difficulty in being the Bulls,
in being the Shaq and Kobe Lakers,
in being the Tim Duncan Spurs,
in being the Warriors,
is that you have this high-functioning veteran-led,
veteran-laden intellectual system.
And hey, let's get a 19-year-old and see, it's hard.
If, by the way, if the Warriors stunk,
they'd stay with Wiseman.
But I think Denver's going to find this out.
like Denver with Christian Brown.
Was he the best player, or did they think
athletically out of
Kansas with a great coach Bill Self,
he could contribute
for like two years? And I think
it's just very difficult when you're in the dynasty.
You got picks, and you're like,
are we going to sit and try to develop?
We've got to win titles.
We're not going to sit and spend
eight years developing a guy with a big ceiling.
We want guys that can help us now.
Now, yeah. Drafts are tough.
Let's talk to the Portland Trailblazers.
They drafted Scoot Henderson, third overall,
last night, still a lot of speculation Dame Lillard could be moved after drafting Scoot.
Dave Lillard made it clear he wanted a veteran to come in, but Scoot hopes that he gets the
opportunity to play with Dame.
Man, yeah, I'm hoping to get to play with Dame for sure.
Special talent, special guard.
So one of my favorites to watch, you know, especially film-wise, and just to pick how he moves
off the court as well.
So, yeah, it would be cool to play with him.
I'm excited to watch Scoot play.
The two guys in the draft I want to watch
play are Scoot and Wemby.
I want to watch him play.
I think he's going to be a spectacular highlight read.
So Damien Lillard had all night to sleep on it.
He wakes up this morning.
Does he call Portland and say, trade me?
Does he know that if it gets out,
nobody's offering a lot to Portland
because Dame has made the trade request.
So what's Damien and Lillard do?
Do you say, fine, I'll wait and watch Scoot Henderson
in Summer League.
Maybe I want to play with him.
What does he do?
Because it's all about Dane.
Portland made it clear last night.
Colin. Hey, we're going to do what's best for us. Dame, you do what's best for you. That's what
drafting of scoof, not trading the pick is. I don't know what Dame does. Well, first of all,
I believe this morning the Miami Heat are in contact with Dame's agent. So Dame's not
going to say anything. So, uh, the Dame's a good guy. He's loyal. Do I believe the Miami Heat
have or will reach out to Dame's agent and get in discussions so it does.
doesn't go public and say, hey, can you, where is Dames' head this morning?
Because I, trades happen for two reasons.
It benefits teams.
So there's no question Miami benefits from Dame.
No question.
I would argue favorites in the east, along with Boston, Milwaukee.
I mean, like, really good team, right?
Porzingis, Jalen, Tatum, Dame Butler Bam.
Those are great teams.
Now, how does Portland benefit?
And that's the question.
We know Miami benefits with Dame.
What can they give Portland with Scoot?
What can they get Portland with Anfurny Simons, the other Shaden Sharp?
And Jeremy Grant.
So the question is, and I'll ask you, we know Miami benefits.
They'll make the deal.
What can you give Portland that they go, okay, it's cool.
So what would it be?
So my take, and I like this in NFL and NBA.
Anytime everybody's saying something about a trade,
it's usually not going to happen, right?
So in the final hour for headlines,
I have my Dame team a sign and trade of a player
and will put Dame on a championship contender,
and it's not Miami.
Sorry for the T's, but I'll just save it for later.
If Miami, my question is,
Miami's not giving your BAM or Butler.
No, absolutely.
So do you want Tyler Hero?
Does he make your team better?
when you have sharp, scoot, and Simon.
Well, you know, it's another.
It's a log jam.
Yeah, so you've got to find a team without a guard.
Now, there is a forward out there.
We'll talk about it later.
Final story.
Tua suffered multiple concussions during the 2022 season,
and he's doing whatever he can to avoid them in the future.
He's been working with a jujitsu coach this offseason,
and part of the training is learning how to improve how he falls.
Here's Tua.
I want to get better at everything that I can do to help the team win games,
and I know the biggest one is my health is staying on the field.
And so looking at the film, I was able to watch that with my Jiu-Jitsu coach,
and we were able to kind of relieve this scenario, relive this scenario,
and how I got tackled, how I felt.
And it wasn't just one particular game.
It was multiple ways that I got taken down and how I could have prevented that.
I like this.
I do.
I really like this.
I think this is something Brady did about eight years ago,
and people said they'd show practice of Brady falling.
It's like, I think this is a real thing.
You know, the thing about Tua, where he's really easy to root for,
he wants this so bad.
And by the way, he's honest.
He said, like, my size, sometimes I can't see over the offensive line.
You know, it's hard for me not to root for people who have flaws and vulnerabilities,
but they want it so bad.
He wants it so bad.
The other thing that is noticeable, he's put on 10 pounds.
He's gotten thicker.
He's got a jiu-jitsu coach.
Like, he's taking responsibility.
He's like, hey, I have a concussion issue.
I'm going to solve this crap.
I love it.
Yeah.
I really do.
I don't, you know, I don't like the Celtics, but I root for Tato.
I don't like the Dolphins, but I do kind of like to and I'm rooting for me.
He just seems like a good guy.
And, yeah, I know that Dolphins fans won't like that.
Well, it's like Jalen Hertz.
Impossible not to root for Jalen Hurts.
There are some guys that are just really like him.
He wants it so bad.
And by the way, these off seasons for Jalen Hertz, he came back, and we were like,
the hell, he was all yoked up.
Lamar Jackson came back.
Like, I, anytime, nothing against a psychedelic.
conference. But when you go
in the off-season and you transform
your body, you're telling me you are
so deeply invested that
the only time off you really have in three
months, you still spend it on football.
And I like, those kind of people
are easy to root for and they're
so committed, they spend their
off time trying to get better for
you, teammates, coaches. I think I'm going to take
off the month of August and just hit the weight
room and lock in and be ready to come
back for football season. Your bench breast
does that no good. I got to get back to two
plates. It's difficult, but
it's been a while. Let me tell you something. As you get
older, you'll do two plates all the time.
That's two plates. You'll go to the second plate
with regular. Yes. J-Mac with the
news. Well, that's the news.

Do you remember when Diana Ross
double-tapped Little Kim's boobs at the VMAs?
Or when Kanye said that George Bush didn't like black people.
I know what you're thinking.
What the hell does George.
but got to do a little kill.
Well, you can find out on the Look Back at it podcast.
I'm Sam Jay.
And I'm Alex English.
Each episode, we pick it here, unpack what went down, and try to make sense of how we survived it.
Including a recent episode with Mark Lamont Hill waxing all about crack in the 80s.
To be clear, 84 is big to me, not just because of crack.
I'm down to talk about crack on day, but just so you all know.
I mean, at this point, Mark, this is the second episode where we've discussed crack.
So I'm starting to see that there's a through line.
We also have AIDS on the table right now.
Thank you for finishing that sentence.
I don't think there's a more important year for black people.
Really?
Yeah.
For me, it's one of the most important years for black people in American history.

Well, the news broke right around their show yesterday, first things first.
Chris Bruce Sardnick, right, Kevin Wilde, we're on it.
So one of the things that's fairly obvious is, and you pointed this out, is that Chris Paul
stylistically is kind of a walk-it-up-the-floor, mid-range guy, and this offense has been
about movement and speed and pace.
So I'll ask you this.
We all can kind of figure out it's a weird kind of thing.
A, they were tired of Jordan Poole's immaturity, and he didn't have much of a trade market,
so they found a buyer on that.
But is it also acknowledging that Steph's 35, Drayman's 33, Clay 33, they can't win the pace game anymore.
Sacramento ran against them and succeeded, that they're going to slow things down.
What they chose is maturity over speed.
situational IQ over speed and youth.
Because, I mean, there's an argument.
They just got older and smaller, which nobody wants to do.
So I think it's the first of two moves.
I mean, what do you make of the whole thing?
Well, there better be other moves coming.
I mean, if this is their move, then they're not going to get out of the West.
They have no chance of getting out of it.
There are two benefits to this.
The first one's off the court, Colin.
They wanted to get off Jordan Pool's long-term contract, big money, and, you know, we all know how punitive now the new collective bargaining agreement is going to be.
So they traded a long-term deal for a one-year deal in Chris Paul.
Obviously, you also got the stench of the fight or the sucker punch from Draymond and Jordan Pool out of your locker room.
Everybody seems to be, you know, with Draymond on this.
So now that's out of the locker room.
They should be fine in that regard.
The only basketball benefit I see of this is that last year the Warriors were terrible when
Steph Curry was on the bench.
Right?
Without him, they couldn't, they lost leads and fell behind even more.
Now Chris Paul presumably will run that second unit so you shouldn't be giving up the leads
and getting outplayed badly with your second team.
That's the only benefit I see.
outside of that he doesn't fit.
He wants to run the pick and roll.
He's exceptional at doing that,
but they don't run many pick and rolls.
They're a motion, ball movement, player movement, offense.
They did go to the pick and roll in the playoffs against the Lakers out of desperation.
And Steph can run it because he's such a great long-distance shooter,
but it's just not a good basketball fit.
So it doesn't make sense to me basketball-wise.
Okay, so this is interesting, Chris, and I don't mean to put you on the spot.
But if they are saying to themselves, our second unit, Chris Paul pick and roll guy is going to be different.
That's where you move Clay, because they just drafted Clay's replacement last night, a shooter, a two guard.
You move Clay and get a big that's available to run pick and rolls.
And what you're saying is stylistically, stiff on the floor, that's what we're going to run.
our second unit
is going to be more pick and roll
is there a big out there because they need to get bigger
is there a big out there that can be available
that's a pick and roll big
yeah look I mean
the big out there is Brooke Lopez
and I he can shoot the three
remember early in his career he was a post up score
he's a great defender
if they could get him
then all of a sudden I feel really good about the woods
now I don't know if that's possible
but that's the guy I'd be looking at.
And here's, you know, it's hard to get a big for a small.
And you and I think are on the same page with this.
I love trading Jordan pool.
And I don't have anything against Jordan.
I think he'll go to D.C.
He's exciting.
He's fun to watch.
He'll average 23 plus points per game
and have a lot of dribbling exhibitions
and the fans will love him.
They won't win, right?
But he'll do his thing and he'll have fun.
I would have loved, and I don't know that you could do this.
Maybe you had to throw something else in.
I would have loved to have gotten critical.
Stap's Porzinez for Jordan Poole.
A 7-3 guy who can spread the floor, shoot the three, has a good post-up game, gets to the
free throw line, and can protect the rim.
Obviously, that's not happening now, but that's the type of move.
I was just disappointed with all due respect to the future Hall of Famer and all-time
great Chris Paul, that this is all they could get for Jordan Poole because Chris is 38 and
injury prone.
Yeah.
Poor Zingas to the Celtics.
So I think it makes them a better offensive team,
and sometimes Jalen Brown and Tatum get jammed up,
and you could just have another get-a-basket guy.
They still don't have, to me, an elite facilitator on offense.
Porzengis gets hurt a lot.
They won't be as good defensively in the back court.
So I think they, to me, the Celtics traded issues.
They won't get as jammed up offensively,
because they'll just say, okay, Tatum's not playing well.
Okay, Porzingis get a hoop.
So I think it makes them better situationally on offense.
But I still think they'll struggle at times to get into their offense.
They won't be as good defensively in the back court.
They just traded issues.
I kind of like it, but I don't feel it necessarily makes them a championship team.
What do you think?
Yeah, I hear you.
I like it.
I think it makes them a tad bit better.
But, you know, Marcus Smart was a leader on that team.
the locker room. I actually think his absence now will allow or at least even force Jason Tatum
and or Jalen Brown to kind of take on more of a leadership role, which I think one of those two guys
needs to do. So I think it could be good in that regard. It looks like they're going to put Derek White,
I would think, is going to replace Marcus Smart. White has become a better defender than Marcus
Smart. He's always been a better three-point shooter. We saw him actually saved them a few times in the
playoffs. And so I think that's fine. But your offensively, I love it because
Bozinga shoots the three. He can shoot the mid-range. He can post up. And as I said,
he gets to the free throw line. They were bottom three in the league and foul,
free throw attempts last year. So he gives them a post-up game and foul shots that they didn't
get last year. The challenge still is this. And you said it, they need a point guard.
All right, Marcus Mark was not really a true point guard. Derek White is it. They don't have
one. So at the end of games, they put the ball in Tatum and Brown's hands, and they turn it over
there just not facilitators. They're predictable. So they still, they thought Brogden might feel
that role. He didn't. So I would go, look, I would go get a facilitator if I'm them. I don't
know if that's in the cards, but they're going to try to go at it without that point guard, it looks
like, and that could be trouble for them. All right, about a minute and a half left.
Dame and his agent, he's not going anywhere.
He's not going to entertain a trade.
Then they draft Scoot Henderson.
This morning, do you think Dame's still thinking I'm here until the end or would consider something?
I got to be honest, and this is not coming from Damien Lillard himself.
I haven't talked to him, but he doesn't.
It seems obvious.
He doesn't want to be traded.
It just seems obvious that he doesn't want to be traded.
be traded. Damien is smart. Colin, who in the world were they going to get with the third
pick that was all of a sudden going to make them a championship contender? It wasn't happening,
but Dame just doesn't want to go. It seems that way to me. So I even think now he's still
like, I'm kind of stuck. Like, you know, I don't want to come out and ask for a trade. We're
obviously not going to win. I think the Blazers, look, it's best for both parties to separate.
It's not just best for Dane.
We always talk about we want him to get a championship.
It's best for the Blazers.
Where are they going with this team?
They're not going anywhere with this group.
Scoot Henderson needs the ball in his hands.
He's not a shooter.
Doesn't shoot the jumper.
He shot 27% from three.
He said he's coming out to win rookie of the year.
They already have Air for these Simons.
That's your back court of the future, Simons and Scoot Henderson.
And then you got Shaden Sharp on the wing.
They need to trade Dame.
I think Philadelphia, Tyrese Maxie and Tobias Harris, for Dame and maybe Matisse Steebel, I'd like that.
If I'm Boston, I'm seriously considering offering Jalen Brown for Damian Lillard.
I heard you earlier and you're right.
What does Miami have to offer me?
If I'm Portland, I'm not just trying to do Dame a favor.
That's part of it.
But I'm not giving him up in a bad trade.
And I don't see anything realistic that Miami can give me.
So Miami better be looking for three or four team deals if they want to get.
get Damien Liller if I'm the Blazers.
Co-host, the first things first, brings
the energy in a Friday. Four
shows, he's got energy for five
and us. I love him. Chris Broussard
Brut's all good seeing you, man.
You too, Colin. All right. He does
such a good job for us.
Yeah, I mean, I don't,
I don't know. All I know is
this. The draft is about
hope and youth, and I want to
watch Scoot play. I'm excited.
I'm going to get two guys, like
John Zion. I want to watch them play.
Now, they've gone sideways, but I wanted to watch them play.
In the NFL draft, that happens all the time.
There's a bunch of guys I want to watch play.
But Scoot and Wemby, draft gave me two guys.
I'll be watching their opening night.
Can't wait.
Fun.
Exciting.
Would you give up Tyrese Maxi?
Is that what Brousard said Tyrese in a package for Dame?
Dame and Embed?
I think Dave and Embed's great, but are you parting with Tyrese who's like a young ascending dude?
Tyrese, was he like 23?
You got him for 10 years versus Dame for like two or three?
Dame and Ambide is a different team.
Who's the third guy?
Ben Simmons is gone.
Tobias Harris.
You're your third.
Come on.
Come on.
Well, he was a nice player.
He's about 17 a night.
Tomias Harris, a good player.
He's a good three.
I'm not doing that.
By the way, Aaron Gordon was just a good player.
He went to Denver.
Why is Portland adding a number?
another guard. I need a forward. I've got the team. Broussard didn't say it. Final hour for sure.
Well, you could bring him over and move the, you know, one of these guys, Simons or something.
Scoot your future. Scoot and Sharp are the guys that you want to be building around. They look like big time prospects.
Yeah, they are. How do you own the day in sports? Make incredible plays. How about for the rest of us?
