Starting point is 00:00:12 We invented a podcast? Well, we didn't invent it. We just contributed to it. We're the first people to do podcasts. We get to ask other people questions because we're sick and tired of being asked questions. Well, sick and tired is a strong way to put it. But, you know, tired and sick. Listen to Hey Jonas on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you.
Starting point is 00:00:30 you get your podcast. Just listen. We don't care where you hear it. What's up, fam? It's Isaiah Thomas. And I'm CJ Toledano. Every family has its secrets. But what happens when you discover that your dad has been living a double life? That is not the look of an innocent man. Is everyone lying to me about who they are?

Starting point is 00:02:30 Here we go, hour two. Ready to roll. We are live. It is the herd, wherever you may be. However, you may be listening. Thanks for making us part of your day. Baseball playoffs start. Regular season ends Sunday.
Starting point is 00:02:48 Baseball playoffs start. Brewer's Mariners, World Series, Milwaukee to win it. Stop. You cannot win a World Series with a bad bully. Can't. Can't do it. Dodgers cannot win a World Series with that bullpen. Mariners, you're getting emotional.
Starting point is 00:03:03 Mariners have an elite closer, top 7, 8 staff. They don't have to manufacture rallies. In the playoffs, you face great pitching. You've got to hit some jacks. You've got to get home runs. You've got to get fast runs. You're not going to have six-hit rallies against the best staffs. You're not going to do that.
Starting point is 00:03:18 We'll merge that hot take with some actual odds later in the show if you want to revisit. I can assure you the Mariners are not close to the favorites. Sometimes I can be perceptive. All right, we're going to play a game before a clap comes on. So these are not all great teams. But there are no perfect teams in the NFL. The Eagles are about as close as you can get. But some of these teams have massive holes.
Starting point is 00:03:45 And my take is if you've got a star quarterback like Matt Stafford and he's old, yeah, you need to fix the hole. So we're going to play panic or patience. Are you ready to go? I think so, yes. All right. Let's play this for four or five minutes. All right. So, Colin, we'll start with the Baltimore Ravens. They got embarrassed by the Lions. They're 31st in scoring defense. Should the Ravens be panicked or patient?
Starting point is 00:04:08 I think they have to make a move at the trade deadline. You watch Detroit run all over them. Well, who's their big rival in the AFC? Kansas City and Baltimore and Buffalo. James Cook and Buffalo can run and keep the ball away from Lamar Jackson. This is a great offense. But you watch Lamar Jackson, On the sidelines against the lions, that's what Buffalo has the ability to do with their James Cook-led run game and their excellent tight ends. I think they have to make a defensive move at the trade deadline and give up something on offense. All right, let's go to the Chiefs. Their offense is anemic 21st in scoring. Colin, should the Chiefs be panicked or patient?
Starting point is 00:04:52 Panic because this is Travis Kelsey's last year. and they don't really have a receiving cord to build around. So don't waste Mahomes talent. Right now, they have no run game. Kelsey last year, cross your fingers on the maturity of Rishi Rice. So I think they have to look strongly at Tyree Kill. Again, is it a one-year deal? But this is Travis' last year.
Starting point is 00:05:15 He will be in the biggest games ready to roll and block, which he wasn't early in this season. I think you need to make a move at the trade deadline. Okay. Pittsburgh Steelers. They spent all that money on defense. 31st against the run, Colin. Should the Steelers be panicked or patient? I would be more in the panic mode.
Starting point is 00:05:34 I think this is Aaron Rogers last year. There is no guarantee you get a quarterback as good as Aaron Rogers next year. The O line is inexplicably bad again. Naji Harris is gone. Caleb Johnson could be a miss, could be a whiff. If you didn't go get Aaron Rogers for a three-year plan, It was a one-year plan. Fix the offensive line.
Starting point is 00:05:58 Go get a very good running back on a bad team at the trade deadline. Both of us like the bills to win the Super Bowl. However, after three games, they're last in rush defense. Now, some of that is Derek Henry and Lamar in the opener. Should the bills be panicked or patient? I think they need to make a move defensively. They are terrible on third down. And by the way, the best teams in this league,
Starting point is 00:06:21 Eagles, Lions, Ravens, some of the best teams, they all have excellent run games. Again, when you have a star quarterback, how do you lose? He is like Lamar Jackson, watching the game from a bench. I think Buffalo,
Starting point is 00:06:36 maybe they move one of their, they have three really good tight ends. Could they move a tight end to get an interior defensive lineman, give up a good tight end and a draft pick, I think they need to make a move. All right, your boy, Bo Nix, we need to have a real conversation eventually.
Starting point is 00:06:51 He's got an 83.4 passer rating. Lowest graded starter among PFF quarterbacks. Should the Broncos be panicked or patient? Patience. Here's their upcoming schedule. Bengals, Jets, Giants, Cowboys, Texans, Raiders. He's going to have a 98 to 103 passer rating. He's going to be just fine, tough early schedule for the record,
Starting point is 00:07:14 struggled last year in September. Take a deep breath, have patience. Sequin Barkley, I mean, Colin, They're 3-0, but he has not gotten off to a good start. Panicked or patient over Seque 1. Patience, the Eagles have 130-plus rushing yards in every game. Remember, look at all his touches last year. Look at all his touches.
Starting point is 00:07:35 So take a deep breath. I think, you know, needs a buy week. Could they rest him for a week against an easier opponent? They'll be fine. But I do think there's a little fatigue from last year's heavy workload. For sure. Packers lost to the Browns. Panicked or patience?
Starting point is 00:07:52 Patience. The Brown's scoring drives were four yards and 16. They were on the road. Jordan Love threw his first bad pick in about 10 games. This is a great team that had a bad Sunday and really a bad fourth quarter. Green Bay is fine. Rams gag away a huge lead against the Eagles. Just a collapse.
Starting point is 00:08:14 Should they be panicked or patient? A little panic here. A.J. Brown is a problem. They don't have size at the cornerback position. And by the way, they have not drafted in the secondary. Outside of safety, Cameron Kitchens, they have not selected anybody in the backfield in five years in the first three rounds. They have kind of neglected this position.
Starting point is 00:08:38 They should have gone after it. I think last year in the draft, they did not go get a top corner. So they've got a lot of smaller middle, late round defensive backs. and, you know, Amar on St. Brown, A.J. Brown, Mike Evans, Justin Jefferson. A lot of these teams in the NFC have a big, tall, ranging number one receiver. I think at the trade deadline, they got to give up a pick and go get a top corner. Finally, C.J. Stroud, he stinks. Should the Texans be panicked or patient? Patience. First of all, their own line the last two years is arguably the worst in the league.
Starting point is 00:09:15 Joe Mixon's hurt so they have no run game. So, I mean, listen, like most young quarterbacks, It's circumstantial. He's very good early. When his first year, he had a good old line, healthy receivers. They've had massive offensive injuries. He has still world-class precision. Take a deep breath on Bo Nix and C.J. Stroud, the Green Bay Packers, take a deep breath. But there are some really good, like Buffalo.
Starting point is 00:09:40 The way to beat them is the way Detroit beat Lamar Jackson. I would give up one of my tight ends in a draft pick to fix the interior of my D-line. And with that, the voice of college football at Fox, Joel Klat, who's going to be calling the Trojans and the Fighting Al-I-Saturday. Can't wait for that. Let me start with this. I was surprised by the line because I think Ohio State's got much better players than Washington. I think it'll be a really picturesque day. But lost in, you know, there's been so much talk about Texas isn't that good, and Clemson's falling apart, and Notre Dame lost two games. games, lost in all of it is Ohio State's really, really good.
Starting point is 00:10:25 So they're not getting a lot of discussion since the Texas win. Julian's saying, when you look at Ohio State, is there anywhere they're better than last year's team that won the Natty? Oh, that's a great question. Last year's team, I mean, from a roster construction standpoint was historically good. You know, they were the best talent composite team in the entire country a year ago. Hard to say, I do think that they could probably have a more elite passing game, in particular, down the field. I think San gives him that with his precision. Now, he has thrown a couple of picks in the last couple of games, and that's worrisome for a young quarterback in particular,
Starting point is 00:11:04 about to go make his first start on the road. And by the way, Husky Stadium is nothing to scoff at now. Washington has the second longest home win streak in college football at 22 games column. They haven't lost since 2021, and Washington is a very good football team. I think that they have gone totally overlooked in our sport. In fact, the AP poll continues to prove to everyone what a worthless piece of junk it is by not giving Washington one vote. Not one.
Starting point is 00:11:31 You've got to be kidding me. That is, it's so disrespectful. It's out of control. Demand Williams is a very good player at quarterback. They've got Coleman, Jonah Coleman at running back. Coleman's a great top 10 running back in the sport. And Denzel Boston is very good on the outside. I actually think Washington might give.
Starting point is 00:11:48 Ohio State some fits in this one, not only the environment, but a quarterback that can run around and be mobile. I think the eight and a half that this line is right now, I would probably take the eight and a half. And Washington, I could see Ohio State using a conservative game plan, Colin, this weekend in particular, like they did against Texas to protect a young quarterback because it's his first start in a road environment. And to do that in this environment, I think is going to be big for Julian San. I think that they'll be conservative. I think that they'll be conservative and win this one by only a score. Oregon at Penn State is going to be magnificent.
Starting point is 00:12:25 Excellent defenses. Drew Allard came into the season as the quarterback we talked about. Dante Moore is a pro quarterback eventually. That dude, as they say, he can spin it. I think I like Oregon with the upset. Now, you're talking about two great defenses. James Franklin doesn't get the love because he's known as a recruiter. Well, he won it, Vandy, he won here.
Starting point is 00:12:50 Their defenses are always good. I think it's fairly low scoring despite the high-profile quarterbacks, because I think the defenses are really good. How do you see it? Well, there's two huge question marks in this game for me. The first one is Penn State in general, under James Franklin, they do not win these types of games. They don't.
Starting point is 00:13:10 That's the big knock. In fact, and the data backs that up. It's not just sentiment. You've got to go back to 2016. for the last time that they won a regular season game against a top 10 opponent. Wow. And it's 14 in a row. They're 0 and 14 in the regular season against the top 10 opponent.
Starting point is 00:13:29 Now, they beat Utah in a bowl game, and Boise was technically ranked, also in a bowl game inside of the top 10, but not in the regular season and not against the Big 10. And this Oregon team is formidable, and the reason that you articulated is their quarterback. I think Dante Moore is quickly becoming one of the Heisman favorites, favorites in college football. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:13:50 He is ridiculously talented as a thrower, but he's also prepared and can run. So that combination for me makes him a really dangerous player. This environment's going to be incredible, though. I just talked about the Husky Stadium up there in Seattle. I'll tell you, the whiteout at Penn State probably is the most difficult environment in all of college football. I can't make a pick. I mean, on my show, I said Penn State by one. I think it's going to be a crazy game.
Starting point is 00:14:19 I would take the three and a half if I was out there with Oregon. Yes. But maybe Penn State, because here's the thing. I think James Franklin has to win this game. Like Dan Landing in Oregon, they don't have to win this game. But if Penn State loses at home, it's like we're all going to be sitting there and thinking to ourselves, is he ever going to win a matchup game? Yeah, he went to the semi-final last year, but they beat Boise and SMU.
Starting point is 00:14:41 Not quite the same route that Ohio State had to take to the national championship last year when they had to play Tennessee and then Oregon and then Texas. You know, so when is the moment when James Franklin and Penn State is going to level up? Maybe it happens on Saturday, but they really need to win a game like this or else their confidence level is going to start to get rattled. Speaking of a team that struggles in big spots, Lincoln Riley has been four and ten against ranked teams. I said this earlier. Caleb Williams is a bit more talented quarterback than Jaden Mayava.
Starting point is 00:15:11 But when I would watch USC with Caleb Williams, I felt like it was Caleb's offense, and Lincoln sometimes was along for the ride. When I watched this offense, it is Lincoln Riley's. Power run. He liked to run the ball more at Oklahoma that people give him credit for. Very clever, tight-end use. Really clever. I mean, there's a very layered offensive gameplay. Very little is ad-libbed.
Starting point is 00:15:39 Okay. It feels like to me this USC team with their size up front, this is his first team that I feel like I'm wanting. This is completely Lincoln Riley's team. Yeah, it's very much more in the blueprint. You've come around. I told you this three weeks ago. And you kind of raised your eyebrows, I remember. But yes, yes.
Starting point is 00:15:59 They're number one in the country in yards per play. They're top five in yards per pass, top five in yards per rush. So it's balanced, which the OU offenses were always bad. balanced. And this was, because here's the thing, this can be true. This can be true. That Caleb Williams was the best quarterback, talent-wise, that Lincoln Riley had at USC. And Jaden Maiava's offense could be better than Caleb Williams' offense. Why? Because it's more balanced. Maiava stays within the system more. So what they threaten the defense with is actually what I would consider to be deeper than what Williams threatened the defense with. Williams played so
Starting point is 00:16:39 much ball outside of the X's and O's. And it was hard to game plan from an offensive perspective. There were times when the numbers would suggest he needed to hand the football off, but in the run pass option, he would keep it in order to try to make a play with a cape on his back. And again, incredibly talented, but this offense is better and it's more balanced. Wayman Jordan at running back is really good. And then you mentioned the line of scrimmage. They're better on the offensive line than they have been the last couple of years. That's pretty clear. But also the defensive line. Did you know that they knew that they needed to get bigger? And size plays such a huge part in being able to play solid defense on the defensive line.
Starting point is 00:17:16 This year they average in their defensive line two deep, 300 pounds. Last year it was 270, just over 270. So they're much more formidable up front on the defensive side, which I think is going to help them in the Big Ten schedule. This is, I think, the most underrated team in the country. They lost a lot of close games a year ago. They're much better. Their offense is very good and it's balanced.
Starting point is 00:17:37 I think USC is on the precipice to make a run here in the next month when they've got Illinois on the road. They're going to have Notre Dame. They're going to have Michigan. You're going to see them win some of these games and everyone's going to be, well, I think they're going to have their eyes open to how good USC actually is. Well, it's interesting. I told Urban Meyer this about a month ago. I said the NIL, coaches initially looked at it as, you know, evil. I said it's actually a job saver because you can't fire the coach and write an $80 million.
Starting point is 00:18:07 check and also have $20 million a year to buy players, I'm like in the end, you're going to give Brian Kelly an extra year or two because you're asking so much of your donors. And so the NIL actually, it's almost like March Madness. If you make the tournament, you keep your job. The NIL is giving coaches a year or two. And so I look at Lincoln, I think they're on their way. And I look at Oklahoma. And I said this a couple of weeks ago.
Starting point is 00:18:34 John Matur, now he's banged up, and they're not going to have him for. well, he's excellent. That kid is excellent. I think Venables between all the juniors and seniors on defense and finding their magical quarterback, and it takes a while. Sometimes even the big schools can't find him. I think Lincoln and
Starting point is 00:18:50 Venables, it's going to work. And I think in a different world, 20 years ago, they'd have the donors breathing down their neck. My question with Oklahoma, because I think Oklahoma is a playoff team. I think they're a top six or seven team, but now that I don't have their quarterback. Yeah. What's that going to look like?
Starting point is 00:19:07 I would disagree with you on OU because they don't have balance and they don't have depth at this point. Because in order to beat Michigan, Meteer had to be Superman. And he was. And he is gifted. He's very gifted. And he's sensational. Now he's got this broken hand. He's going to have surgery.
Starting point is 00:19:27 Now he's going to be out a month. They don't beat Texas without John Meteer. I'm sorry, I don't care how good their defense has played. And they have played incredibly well. They're not going to beat Texas without John Meteer. because their offense doesn't do anything without John Mateer. Do you know, their running backs average per rush is 130th in the country. So they don't have anything outside of Mateer.
Starting point is 00:19:47 So now he's gone for a month. They will lose one, maybe two games. They've got Ole Miss in that stretch. They've also got South Carolina in that stretch. But then, Colin, once they get him back, then they've still got to face Alabama, Missouri, LSU. You? Like I don't see them being a playoff team without him healthy every single week. And this was my exact concern right after they beat Michigan is I was like, that's a great win for Oklahoma.
Starting point is 00:20:15 Man, it's fantastic. And Materia should be the Heisman frontrunner. But if he goes down, watch out. And that's where we're at. So I'm actually a bit concerned. I would be panicked for Oklahoma at this point. The back end of their schedule is not favorable without Matur on the field. I don't see them beating teams that they are evenly matched in,
Starting point is 00:20:35 which they were able to do against Auburn and against Michigan. So from the Oklahoma standpoint, I'm a bit concerned for them. Most underrated team in the country, most overrated team in the country. Oh, that's a good one. I think USC is the most underrated team in the country. I don't think people really realize how real USC is. I think you can make a case that Washington is the most underrated. team in the country without one vote in the AP, which is just ridiculous.
Starting point is 00:21:07 Overrated, that's a tougher one. I think, let me thought, I don't know if they're rated high. I don't buy Michigan despite beating Nebraska. I don't buy them. Yeah, I mean, they're not rated overly high. I think that that score was a lot closer than the game indicated. Oh, absolutely. They ran it for over 300 yards.
Starting point is 00:21:24 You know, Nebraska threw a Hail Mary at the end of the half. Then they scored late. So really, it was like a 10 point margin. way the game played out and it ends up being three on the scoreboard. I would look at a team like Ole Miss. Old Miss might be overrated. Yeah, I got LSU this weekend. Yeah, they've got LSU and they're weirdly favored in that game. I don't buy that at all. They're favored by a point of half. I don't buy that at all. Ole Miss struggled to beat Kentucky and Arkansas. That's an Arkansas team that lost to Memphis. Shamblis is their new quarterback. He's a D-2 transfer. Came from Ferris State,
Starting point is 00:21:58 won a national championship there. But now they're going to face a defense that is really, good. LSU's defense is fantastic. Yeah. And in a lot of ways, is the reason that LSU is undefeated. So I think Ole Miss is a bit overrated at this point. And then I'll tell you a team that I would, I think Bama struggles this week.
Starting point is 00:22:18 But we've kind of come back on their side. Georgia doesn't lose at home. Georgia's going to beat Bama. I agree, but it's also what people are failing to realize is Bama is terrible on the road. Colin, if you go back to last year, they played totally
Starting point is 00:22:32 uninspired against Vandy lost on the road. They got throttled by Oklahoma, which Oklahoma was not a great team last year. I know. I watched that game. And they got throttled on the road at Oklahoma. They come out after a full off season in the first game of the year and got blasted by Florida State on the road. And now they've got to go on the road and maybe the toughest place to play in the country where Georgia hasn't lost since pre-COVID. They've got the longest home winning streak in the country. And Georgia is coming off a confidence builder in which They were down 21-7 on the road at Neeland Stadium to Tennessee and came back and won. That conference still goes through Georgia.
Starting point is 00:23:08 I think Bama is in some serious trouble this weekend. Speaking of on the road, you may want to watch the old pregame show on Fox this weekend. Yeah, I hear you're making a trip down to Champaign. The producers will hopefully squeeze me in for 20 seconds. It's a pretty crowded set, so I'm going to try to weasel my way into about 20 seconds. I told I got to talk to Urban, so I'm excited for that. I love it. Well, we will welcome you with open arms, my friend, and hopefully we get a great environment and a great game on Saturday.
Starting point is 00:23:40 You know, the most fun you can have in Champaign, Urbana, it's the first train leaving. So I won't be there overnight. See, don't do that. Why do that before you go? I love champagne. Hey, Champagne, come to town, and I love you. I've heard you got a great ice cream spot, by the way. I don't know what it's called, but I hear there's some great ice cream.
Starting point is 00:23:59 No, no, no, no. I like champagne, too, with some salmon. Man of the people. Here he is. Colin Coward. Man of the people, right here. I'm joking. People, this show is tongue-in-cheek. That's right. That's right. That's right. All right. Good to see you, buddy. You as well. Have a great day, bud.
Starting point is 00:24:21 Yeah. No, I can't wait. I'm going to be here. We've got a lot of people on these pregame shows. You know, I try to wedge my way in and have to, you know, kind of use a power move to get on that show, so hopefully I can sit down with the fellas. Want more herd? We have some big news. What's the news, name? Huge news. We created our own podcast called, Hey, Jonas. We invented a podcast?
Starting point is 00:25:55 Well, we didn't invent it. We just contributed to it. We're the first people to do podcasts. Pretty, yeah, pretty wide range of podcasts throughout there. But this one's extra special. So how did we actually come up with a name, Hey Jonas, guys? I honestly don't remember. I think it was on a call about what we should call it.
Starting point is 00:26:11 Well, we were thinking I'm originally calling it one of the early names of our band. Before Jonas Brothers was... This is how you guys remember it going down? Yes. I have a very different memory of this. We were talking about a thing, a bit for the podcast, for people could call in and say, hey Jonas, and then I wrote down in my little notepad, Hey Jonas, and offered it up as a potential title for the podcast.
Starting point is 00:26:35 But thanks for remembering that, guys. Listen to Hey Jonas on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcast. Just listen. We don't care where you hear it. The story I've told myself about love or relationships can then shape my behavior, and that can lead me to sabotage the possibility of connection. Starting point is 00:27:52 But there's so much more to me than that. I'm an actor. I'm a comedian, and recently I've become quite the helper myself. And on my new podcast, Hope from a Hypocrite, I'll be changing lives, helping people in need with my sage advice and thoughtful solutions. Sike, I'm a comedian. I'm not qualified to give good advice. Join me and my comedian friends as we riff, rant, recommend some of the most legally dubious advice known to man. If I'm calling you, even if you're on your phone, let it ring twice. wise, one ring is too scary. Cream a chicken suit.
Starting point is 00:28:28 Hey, cream a chicken suit. This is Help from a Hypocrat, the worst advice from the dumbest people you know. Listen to Help from Hypocrite as part of the Mike Coutura podcast network available on the IHart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. What's up, fam, it's Isaiah Thomas. And I'm C.J. Toledano, and our podcast Point Game is about defying the odds.
Starting point is 00:28:50 Like LeBron heading into the playoffs without Luca and Austin Reed. and finding ways to win no matter what. He's the smartest player to ever play the game. His IQ is at a level that we've never seen before. And he knows. Without Luca and Austin Reeves, I got to manipulate the game. We get a player's perspective on the challenges of the playoffs. I think Joker's going to be exhausted this series
Starting point is 00:29:12 because when they don't have Rudy in the lineup, he has to really guard guys like Nas Reid. He has to guard Julius Randall. And then he has to give us everything he gives us on the night-to-night basis on offense. And when IT's friends stopped by, like Quentin Richardson, we dive into some playoff history too. Steve Nash would get that thing. That man, hell get to flying.
Starting point is 00:29:31 He running up the court, licking his fingers, why he got the ball. Like, you go through a training camp with that, Isaiah. You figure it out real quick. Oh, yeah. Get your ass up and down the court, and you're going to get the ball. So listen to Point Game on the IHeart Radio app,
Starting point is 00:29:45 Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Mark Sanchez last hour. I'm looking at my pocket schedule on the baseball. Bears, trouble. Dodgers also trouble. Gotta figure that bullpen out, man. Little late. J. Mack with the news.
Starting point is 00:30:06 No, no, no, no. Turn on the news. This is the herd line news. All right, let's go to the NFC, Colin. Caleb Williams. You got to face the Dallas defense. Lit him up 298 yards, four tutties. We've seen some growth from Caleb week over week,
Starting point is 00:30:21 and tight end Cole Komet. Talked about his ascendance under Ben Johnson. I thought he played great. You know, you talk. about, you know, Coach Dallon up some plays and Caleb actually on him. It was really good to see Caleb do all that stuff. And then when he had to make a play, he made it to play on the fourth down to DJ at the back of the end zone, kind of extending it a little bit and making a fine in the receiver and getting a touch on there.
Starting point is 00:30:43 So good stuff by Caleb. He continues to ascend every week. Yeah, I think it's too easy to just say Dallas stinks. It's still an NFL game. There's pressure. I mean, he made big throws and big sports. spots and he deserves credit. What do you mean?
Starting point is 00:31:00 It's too easy to say Dallas takes. Eagles went up and down the field before that the interruption. And then Russell Wilson threw for 450 yards. Dallas gave Jalen Hertz and the Eagles problems. Well, not before that storm. After there was like the outage and the one hour break, the Eagles did nothing. But before that, easy work. I mean, again, you can get all excited about Caleb.
Starting point is 00:31:19 He now has to go to the Raiders, right? This week, bears are favored. Who you got in this one? I don't have a strong opinion. Nobody's saying you have to. I think the Raiders will be feisty. I have four strong opinions this week, and I'm looking for a fifth. Okay.
Starting point is 00:31:38 Let's go to the second story. Cowboys traded away Michael Parsons, obviously. And oh, wouldn't you know what the defense is hemorrhaging yards points? One of the worst units in the NFL. NFL writer Robert Mays believes this all comes down to Jerry's lack of ambition. Previous areas of the Cowboys, when Jerry was actually the one, pulling the strings and making a lot of the personnel decisions. It was haphazard.
Starting point is 00:32:02 It was scattershot. It was not rooted in any sort of logic most of the time. But at least there was a level of ambition to it. Right? Like they were trying something. He was making moves. He was trying to go get talent. They were trying to win.
Starting point is 00:32:14 And even if you didn't, even if you could argue with the effectiveness of it, I think you at least had to appreciate the fact that he was trying to get stuff done. Now, it's all of the incompetence and incoherence with none of the ambition. Yes, I believe this is true. I also think they had Jimmy Johnson in the early days.
Starting point is 00:32:36 By the way, Bill Parcells and Jimmy Johnson won a lot of games. And so I think Matt Mosley has also said something, excellent reporter down in Dallas area, is that there's a real question whether Jerry respects and understands the value of coaching. I think coaching's never been more important because the game's never been smarter and more sophisticated, and Jerry doesn't appear to value coaching.
Starting point is 00:33:04 I mean, honestly, he has hired coaches who need him. Mike McCarthy was on the beach. Jason Garrett was not getting interviews for jobs. Brian Schottnheimer wasn't. And when Matt said that, I was like, man, when you really think about it, Jerry has hired coaches who need Jerry. And so he has that there was this like, oh, you're getting a solid from Jerry. So you'll listen to Jerry.
Starting point is 00:33:28 Bill didn't listen to him, and Jimmy got sick of listening to him. And Jerry feels like it's my toy. It's my business. That's why he wants to be GM. So I think there is some of what they're saying, that podcast that is right. But I also think a big part of it is coaching is so valuable today. Players make more. The pressure is greater.
Starting point is 00:33:50 Owners are more impulsive. Like it's a game of inches to begin with. then I just don't think the Cowboys, I don't think they take coaching. They don't value it like other organizations do. Well, I mean, look who they hired, you know. You come off three great seasons with McCarthy, and they were one of the better teams in the NFC.
Starting point is 00:34:09 I think they had like 10, 11, 12 wins, playoff appearances. And then you go hire Brian Schottenheimer, who's never been a head coach, never done a damn thing. So, yeah, I would largely agree with your take. Final story, Colin, sticking in the NFC East, the commanders, man, listen, this is a dangerous spot. Terry McLaurin has a quad injury, and he's seeking second opinions.
Starting point is 00:34:31 Colin, the Washington commanders are beat up, and without scary Terry, this offense does not look very scary. Jaden Daniels still has his knee injury. Dan Quinn is not really revealing anything other than he's day-to-day. I know we can't do it again, but you have to bet the Atlanta Falcons here, Colin. I know that sounds insane.
Starting point is 00:34:51 I refuse to. I kind of do as well. But I think at home, they get the job done. Now, I'm not getting there. But with this injury report from Washington, I think you've got to be a little careful. There's two things I'm never going to do again. Skydive.
Starting point is 00:35:07 I've never done that ever. I'm never going to do it. And bet the Atlanta Falcons. I'm done. There's only 31 teams every league. What if Kurt Cousins takes over at quarterback? Nope, not interested. I'm not doing it.
Starting point is 00:35:18 This team, I'm not doing it. I won't. You know what? There's 31 other capable bets. Well, technically 15. But yes, yes, I know what you're saying. Let me ask, did you see they fired a wide receiver coach? Like they're looking for a scapegoat in week three?
Starting point is 00:35:34 Let's get rid of this wide receiver coach. Like he's out doing anything. I mean, bottom line is Michael Pennix has looked terrible. And he has faced Carolina and Minnesota. He's one of the lowest graded quarterbacks in the league. According to many metrics, he's down there with Bo Nix. That's not what I anticipated. participated from Pennix. He showed well at the end of last year, remember?
Starting point is 00:35:56 Yeah. Yeah, um, I take a deep breath on that. I think Bo Nix's schedule gets, gets, I mean, I do see traits with Pennix that feel elite. I think he throws a, I think he throws a beautiful ball. When do we start? Oh, he lost his right tackle and he's a lefty. We need another year. When does that start? Or if it hasn't started already. Yeah, I think he's down. I see stuff. Uh, Jay Max, with the news. Well, that's the news. And thanks for stopping by.
Starting point is 00:36:24 The Heard Lye News. The, you know, I was thinking about this today, Jay Matt. How lucky are we, we got the base. This is the best, next, starting Tuesday is the best month in sports. It's the best five weeks. You get, I mean, you're going to get baseball playoffs. Small market, big market, stars. I mean, there's the best bullpens, best staff, best hitters.
Starting point is 00:36:46 You're getting unbelievable baseball. College football now all the way in conference. conference play NFL heating up weather cools starting Tuesday it's it's a five to six week period sports is unbelievable and at the end of that I think uh if you're hockey fan hockey starts and the NBA starts oh it's unbelievable I mean it's the last weekend where you can have a life by by next Tuesday it's over every night is unbelievable sports um and and coming up I thought I was optimistic. I don't think I'm pessimistic,
Starting point is 00:37:20 but I took out the pocket calendar on Caleb and the Bears. Next. Be sure to catch live editions of the herd weekdays in noon Eastern, 9 a.m. Pacific on Fox Sports Radio, FS1, and the IHeart Radio app. Hey, it's us, the Jonas Brothers, and guess what? We have some big news. What's the news, new?
Starting point is 00:37:41 Huge news. We created our own podcast called, Hey, Jonas. We invented a podcast? Well, we didn't invent it. We just contributed to it. We're the first people to do podcasts. Pretty, yeah, pretty wide range of podcasts throughout there.
Starting point is 00:37:54 But this one's extra special. So how do we actually come up with a name, Hey Jonas, guys? I honestly don't remember. I think it was on a call about what we should call it. Oh, we were thinking I'm originally calling it one of the early names of our band. Before Jonas Brothers. This is how you guys remember it going down? Yes.
Starting point is 00:38:15 I have a very different memory of this. We were talking about a thing, a bit for the podcast, where people could call in and say, hey, Jonas. And then I wrote down on my little notepad, Hey Jonas, and offered it up as a potential title for the podcast. But thanks for remembering that, guys. Listen to Hey Jonas on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcast.
Starting point is 00:38:34 Just listen. We don't care where you hear it. Hey, I'm Jared Adano. You might know me as that loud guy who yells out, help on the internet. Help! Somebody! But there's so much more to me than that. I'm an actor.

Starting point is 00:40:32 Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcast. Hey, I'm Diana Maria Riva, actress, mother, lover, and a Gen X woman walking through life one hot flash and hormonal crying jag at a time. You ladies know what I mean. I'll bet you a pyramid of podcast. Pazil chin here you do. So let's talk about it. Join me on my new podcast. How hard can it be with the Adamani Arriba, where I call on my Gen X squads from Ohio to Hollywood as we navigate Midlife's most fantastic BS. All of a sudden, I'd had hanginess happening on my own. I was like,
Starting point is 00:41:03 what the hell is that? I was married when I had her, so I didn't even consider how empty that Ness was going to be. Mood swings, night sweats, fupas, sex drive. Wait, what sex? Dating at 45. How hard can it be getting naked at 50 with the new guy? That one's kind of hard. Well, that's lighting. They say we can't polish a turd, but we're sure going to try. So let's get blunt with laughs, tears, or tears of laughter, and dive into it unfiltered and unbothered and ask, How Hard Can It Be?
Starting point is 00:41:32 I cannot believe I'm about to say this out loud in public. Listen to How Hard Can It Be with Diana Maria Riva as part of my Cultura podcast network available on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Start your Saturday strong with Big Noon Saturday. Number 21, USC is looking for a Big Ten statement win as they take on the 23rd ranked fighting Aligni. It all goes down live from Champagne starting with Big Noon kickoff at 10 a.m. Eastern. Then it's USC Illinois, only on Fox. So I think this Sunday, week four, is kind of the last week you can fool people.
Starting point is 00:42:12 I think you kind of know by the end of week four, you kind of know what everybody is. Again, you can fool people a lot longer in college football. The coaching's not as good. The quarterback play is not as dynamic. But in the NFL, you'll get exposed really quickly. Dallas now starting to get exposed. I think people are sleeping on Denver. Denver schedule gets really easy.
Starting point is 00:42:37 They could reel off a seven-game winning streak. They've opened up with, and Bonnick struggled last year early. So I think there are some truths through the first three weeks. I think by the end of this week, week four, you'll kind of know what everybody is and what they're not. We're already seeing teams like Buffalo can't defend the run. Problem. Rams struggle probably need a corner. They didn't draft one.
Starting point is 00:43:02 They probably should have. They probably need to make a move if they're going to get to the Super Bowl and win the Super Bowl. So I was saying, like with the Chicago Bears, what are they? Well, I don't think the symmetry between Ben Johnson and Caleb has been as good as I thought it would be. Caleb still is freelancing too much. Their defense has not been great. So I said before the season, I thought I was really optimistic saying 9 and 8 because I was giving them a 3 and 3 record in division, which they just don't do in the last decade. But now they're 1 and 2.
Starting point is 00:43:37 So what have I learned? What have I gleaned in the first three games? Well, their offense is so talented. They will beat bad defenses. Dallas is a bad defense. If you start looking around the league, they got four or five teams here. They're probably going to do well at Cincinnati. I can see some doubles here.
Starting point is 00:43:59 But this morning, I went back and I looked at every single game, and I revisited my nine and eight prediction. here's where I would be on the Chicago Bears. I think they beat Vegas, but it's really close. Lose at Washington. Beat the Saints at home. Lose at Baltimore. Beat Cincinnati.
Starting point is 00:44:20 Beat the Giants. Lose at Minnesota. Close game. Beat the Steelers at home. Lose to Philly and Green Bay on the road. Beat Cleveland low scoring at home. Lose to Green Bay and at San Francisco. And Detroit could very well be a playoff team.
Starting point is 00:44:36 I could see Detroit. I have predicted the Lions make the playoffs, resting some starters in the final week. I can see that. I don't think Detroit's going to win the division. They'll have to play in the first round. My take is they're a physical team. They'll be a little banged up. They'll protect four or five starters, not everybody.
Starting point is 00:44:54 And they'll beat a depleted and resting Lions team. And that record would be 8 and 9. So that's what they would be an 8 and 9 football team. Again, I said, coming in, I didn't see them as a playoff team. I said, can we get synergy, harmony, chemistry? Can we get that with Ben Johnson and Caleb? So far, it looked really good for Dallas, for big portions.
Starting point is 00:45:19 It looked good for a series in the first two games. So I don't think that's unrealistic. I think that's where they are. Right now it's where they are. They're going to beat weaker defenses and go either way games at home, but I don't think they can win on the road at Washington, Baltimore, Minnesota, Philly, Green Bay, or San Francisco. Now, they get Green Bay at home, you know, we'll see.
Starting point is 00:45:47 I don't think that's negative. I said happiness is directly connected to expectations. So, you know. Can I ask you something about that? So if you look at that schedule, Colin, that opener against the Vikings was such a swing game. They were dominating for three quarters. If they win that game, I am fairly certain, projection would have been like 11 wins.
Starting point is 00:46:10 Because if you could beat a good Vikings team, right? We think the Vikings are a contender with that defense. Then maybe some of these other games, like maybe you sweep the Vikings. Maybe you don't lose both games to the Packers, you know? And there's a world where, I mean, you face Jake Browning, you know, catch a break there. But I don't know, are you sure they're losing to Washington for sure? Is Washington that good? By the way, if we'll say this.
Starting point is 00:46:35 It sounds crazy, but the Ravens defense is so suspect. Yeah. They may, I mean, Baltimore is going to keep you in games because they can't stop the run and they're weak on the back end. That's why I said we played panic or patience. Like, if you have a great quarterback, like Lamar and Josh Allen, the only way to beat them is to keep the quarterback on the sidelines. And so Buffalo's run defense and the race,
Starting point is 00:47:05 Ivan's entire defense is trouble. That's why last year, Burrow was statistically, arguably the best quarterback in the league, couldn't make the playoffs because he was sitting watching games. And so to me, like if, I'm the Rams, let's get the bare schedule out of there. I'm the Rams. I have Matt Stafford. This is arguably, I think Stafford's going to play this year. They're going to draft a quarterback, sit in behind Stafford for a year.
Starting point is 00:47:30 So I got Matt Stafford for probably two years. who gets banged up. I'm going all in. Because there's a likelihood that even if I draft a quarterback that works, he'd be two to three years before he's Matt Stafford pre-snap. So my take is, now, now, with Lamar Jackson and Josh Allen, I have a much longer timeline. But my thing is,
Starting point is 00:47:56 when the only way to beat the Buffaloes and the Baltimore's, now Kansas City is interesting. This is where the Chiefs have a lot going for. Kansas City's defense is great. So when they get Rice and Worthy back, their time of possession will improve some. They won't be as bad on third down. They're not going to be a great running team this year.
Starting point is 00:48:14 They're not going to be. So my take on Kansas City is their defense will keep giving Mahomes chances. And if Rice and Worthy and Travis Kelsey and Big Games, that's enough to win playoff games. Okay. So let me ask. That's why the Chargers and Herbert now are scary, because their defense is unbelievable,
Starting point is 00:48:35 and that's going to give Herbert two to three more possessions, longer drives. Hampton now is coming into Azumas a running back. So the chargers are interesting. If you don't love an offense, what's the defense look like? If you love an offense, Baltimore, nothing kills a great baseball team like a bad bullpen. Baltimore's defense, you can't win a Super Bowl with that defense.
Starting point is 00:48:56 So let me ask you regarding the Bears, if you're inside the front office, polls and everybody, you're huddling around the table. Guys, Coward says we're going eight and nine. Okay? We know our internal, we know what we've got here. We're not making the playoffs this year in the NFC. It's stacked.
Starting point is 00:49:11 DJ Moore. Roma Dunzee is emerging. Luther Burden played well against Dallas. Why don't we just move off DJ Moore to a team that, like you said, it's panicky and needs a receiver? I think this. Let's try to get a third of force. That's the move.
Starting point is 00:49:25 They've got two good tight ends, a capable running back, O line commitment. DJ Moore feels invisible and Roma Dunzee come at Colston Loveland burden and they've got another backup receiver that's okay my take is I would I would consider moving DJ more first of all you got him on a steel remember that remember the deal it's Ryan Paul's best move I would now consider moving him because he also is a veteran player around a lot of young guys and I think DJ Moore looks around the league and think why am I not as productive as some of these guys I'm way Moore Town. Not that he'd be a bad locker room guy, but I think DJ Moore wears his emotion sometimes in his body language. Listen, he's a veteran. He's quality. How about this? Well,
Starting point is 00:50:07 hot takey. If I'm the New York Giants and Day Bowl, and I see shucks, man, I'm starting a rookie quarterback and some of the numbers for rookie quarterback starting in their first year, not great. Gee, I'm on the chopping block. You know, let's bring in DJ more. Let's just invigorate the office. We got neighbors. We got more. We got Cam Scataboo. Let's just, let's go all in. Do you think the Giants are a team that would go after more? You think they're just saying, and we're done. We're done. No, no, they're still in rebuild.
Starting point is 00:50:32 They need draft picks. I mean, they're left tackle. What good is a draft pick for Brian Dable? He ain't going to be there next year. Well, I think if you made that kind of move, you'd probably have to go upstairs and get approval. DJ Moore. Give me a team. I was going to think to Denver Broncos.
Starting point is 00:50:51 Hey, Bo Nix is on the struggle bus. Let's get him a possession receiver to go opposite Cortland Sutton. No? No, they got, no, they have Mims and Franklin. How about Seattle? I mean, I don't know that they do it, but JSN, and then there's a huge drop-off, huge at wide receiver. They like that kid out of Colorado State, the fifth round pick.
Starting point is 00:51:08 Come on, one game. The rookie, he said, no, they like him. I'll throw one at you. Kansas City. Yeah, but they got rice coming back. I think they're going to, you can't depend on rice. Well, worthy, too. Worthy in rice.
Starting point is 00:51:20 I would say DJ Moore. I think DJ more to Kansas City is interesting. And by the way, you're making a trade. the Bears can get DJ Moore to the other conference. Yeah, that makes more sense. Okay, and then I think DJ more, I think with Tyreek, you've always got, you know, you've always got stuff.
Starting point is 00:51:37 DJ Moore's kind of a quiet guy. Let me give you Buffalo Bills. The wide receiving core is not, I mean, Keonk-Kulman is shown a little bit. Shakir's more of a slot guy. I know they like the two tight ends, but why not? I think, again, if you've got an old quarterback, like Aaron Rogers or Matt Stafford,
Starting point is 00:51:54 and you think you could be a playoff team, make a move. Or if you have a great quarterback, and you're like, yeah, our defense has a hole. I mean, Buffalo, you're only going to get about four more years of Josh Allen at this level. Like absolutely devastatingly in his prime. Kansas City's down offensively. Baltimore's defense stinks.
Starting point is 00:52:15 If I'm Buffalo, I look at the Ravens defense and the Chiefs' offense and say, this is the year. I'm not giving this year up. I'm going making a move. Ravens' defense will never be this bad again, and the Chief's offense won't stink like this. Hey guys, it's us. The Jonas Brothers. I'm Joe. I'm Kevin. And I'm Nick. And guess what? We created our own podcast called Hey Jonas.
Starting point is 00:52:39 We invented a podcast? Well, we didn't invent it. We just contributed to it. We're the first people to do podcasts.
