Well, he hosts a podcast, the Athletic Football Show podcast. My staff loves it. formerly at Grantland, the ringer, Robert Mays, and he has bounced around to the Ravens Camp, Rams, Chargers, Texans, Jags, cowboys, and he is now joining us live at Eagles Camp. He's there now. For the record, what is a Nick Seriani camp like? I think this one feels a little different because of all the changes on offense. You know, I think there's just kind of a different sort of energy around this camp.

There's a different level of intrigue because the office. offensive system has shifted so much. And I talked to Jordan Milato when I was here. And it's just coming out of his ears how much he's enjoying the changes. And I think that they're having a lot of fun figuring out what this thing looks like. Whenever you do this, whenever you go to a drastically different offensive system, sometimes there's consternation, sometimes there's growing pains. I think that there's like real excitement here.

And when you combine how good and talented the defense is, the vibes are shockingly good for a team that kind of bottomed out, the way that the Eagles did last year. So you were at Oxnard, which and the Cowboys are one of the only teams now that leaves for their camp, big crowds. You know, it's funny. They've been kind of a pinata on this show for years. We've kind of pushed back on the relevance.

We kind of feel like the chiefs of the Bills are America's team. But I look at that roster and I'm like, it's pretty good. A year after the Micah trade, you're like, they may have won that trade. What was the vibe like? that's a team i feel the exact same way where i've been pretty harsh on them in recent years where their actions and their words were always very different a jerry would talk about how all in they were and i would look at the roster and i'd be like what did you do what do you mean you're all in and then now this entire off season i'm almost uncomfortable with how excited i am about the cowboys

it's a place that i don't really like being and i think it starts with the offense right and i think they're very excited about year two of this offensive system having those receivers and there are so few questions there there's been so much interest in who's going to win the left tackle battle and I think that's in part because everything else feels so settled and so high end on that side of the ball the question is going to be what happens with the defense that's it like how good can the defense be because I expect the offense to be elite if not hyper elite top of the league and I'm in eagles camp which seems fitting right now because the guy that they've hired to oversee that.

Christian Parker was the past game coordinator here for two years, three years before getting the Cowboys DC job. And I said for a long time, he in my mind was the most interesting defensive coordinator candidate in the NFL for multiple seasons. And the fact that now he's getting this opportunity in as bright a spotlight as you possibly can, I really do think they have a lot of faith that he is the guy to turn that thing around. If they can get to average under him on defense combined with what the offense is, that suddenly becomes a team that becomes pretty interesting,

pretty fast in the NFC. So I think you'd almost have to go back to the Seahawks after they won the Super Bowl that we went into a season thinking, oh, this team's an overwhelming favorite. Because the Chiefs won a couple. They got to a couple Super Bowls post-Tirek Hill, but the receiving corps wasn't great. You know, I mean, there were some questions about, you know,

their weapons on the outside. Even during the Patriots run, The Randy Moss teams were regular season dominant, and they didn't win Super Bowls. I'm trying to think of a team, you were at the Rams camp. I mean, if Aaron comes back and it looks like he will, that defensive front, Braden Fisk will now be a rotational player or Aaron Donald Webb. And it's like Puka, you know, if that feels like he's kind of been in a little personal rehab there, so that's right.

left tackle, not as unsettled as I thought two months ago. I think there was criminal charges. I don't remember a team that we looked at and went, yeah, if I said they didn't win, what did Stafford get hurt? So here's an overwhelming favorite. What was that? What was the vibe in the Rams camp? I think they know that.

And I think that part of the messaging that's had to happen there is pushing back against that idea. And if you look at the percentages, right, like if you put the odds on it in Vegas, what percentage chance the Rams have to win the Super Bowl based on everything? It's still like 12.5%, 13%. That's a big number compared to other teams.

It's not a big number overall. And I think that's been part of the messaging from Sean McBae and that staff, is that everyone can say out there that it's Super Bowl or bus that we should be winning at all of that. There still is a very relatively small chance that we end up doing it because of how hard it is. And I think when you're in his position, Sean's very good at this where there's an emotional intelligence to the way that he

approaches the job. And I think banging home this idea of we have to stay hungry, we have to stay on edge, we have to stay urgent. I think that has been a big part of the communication there in a way it might not be in other buildings that have these sorts of expectations. So Seattle's interesting. John Snyder, Howie Roseman is viewed as sort of the most aggressive GM there's an argument over the last decade in terms of drafting college players john snider is as good as anybody and i mean it's since pete left and he has even more power like they just don't miss on top picks so we see them lose kenneth walker we see him lose a corner we see him lose an edge rusher and then they draft those three positions in the draft in my take is they'll be

good even though it's late round so seattle's in a weird spot where we love the coach the quarterback back's really developed. Their losses were replaced in the draft. They still have under 25-year-old talent that's elite. And yet they've taken a back seat to the Rams. And I'm like, you were there up in Kirkland, which may be the prettiest camp in the country. I don't know.

Are we undervaluing Seattle? I think we might be a little bit, but you can understand how it happens. First of all, it is the prettiest training camp. Their facility in Renton is like right on the lake. It's just, it's picturesque. I look forward to it every time I get to go up there where it's like, I get one day of just beautiful Pacific Northwest.

But I think it makes sense in the sense that the Rams got better, okay? The Rams were right there with Seattle last year as the best team in the league. It was neck and neck. It could go either way based on how that NFC championship game was. And if you look at the Rams roster at the end of last year, the Rams roster now, it got better. Seattle's got worse. I don't think it's cruel or unfair to say that.

I think they got worse. Whether they can still make. maintain being that level of team, I do have faith that they can be just because I think Mike McDonald is the defensive version of these offensive coaches that we have seen dictate and dominate and define the league over the last 10 years. Where even if it's, you know, are we good enough at our second corner spot and what does this third safety look like? We do the same thing with these offensive coaches with McVeigh and Shanahan on offense.

If you look at the offensive tackles that the Rams are putting up lead best numbers with, Those are not elite players, but they can get by because of who the coach is. I feel that way about Mike McDonald. Even if we got to rely on a second round safety in Bud Clark being a starter, I think Mike McDonald can get you there. Even if you're going from Boyamoffa to Dante Fowler as your fourth edge player, I think Mike McDonald can get you there. The defense, I don't have many questions about.

I think it's going to be what does the transition on offense look like under a new play caller? And I think there's a world where when you have that young talent that they've drafted, the second year guys, the Elijah Royos, Tori Hortons, that can ascend a little bit, plus the canoe they have on offense. There is a world absolutely where this is still arguably the best team in the NFL, even with some of the changes and even with some of the turnover that we're talking about. So I was talking about this earlier. I said, Matt LaFleure's on the coolest hot seat ever, where there's not pickets and pitchforks outside of Lambo, but the Bears, now it's Ben Johnson year two. I mean, I think between the tackle they drafted, Penae Sewell goes left, the tackle they drafted, new O.C. I think Holmes is brilliant upstairs.

I love to. I think Detroit's going to win the division. I think Kyler Murray may not be Darnold, Minnesota, but he's going to, I mean, last year, it was a musical chairs for them at quarterback. I'm going to go with Kyler win in 10 games. And I look at Green Bay, and I'm like, okay, no Micah, probably for a month. Jordan Love like him, but he has started slow every year. I don't know why, but he is. I look at their schedule early.

Where are you with Green Bay? It feels more fragile there than it has felt in a while. And when I say that, I mean, this is a team that is more draft and developed than almost any franchise in the league. It has been for a long time. There's so many years where the position group that comes to mind for me is the offensive line, where there's so many years where they've got a first, second, third round pick kind of waiting in the wings as a depth player. That's what Jordan Morgan was for them over the last couple of years. Anthony Belton was a second round pick for them last year that wasn't a starter right away.

Now, all of those guys that used to be depth pieces for the Packers, you need them to play well. Jordan Morgan, Matthew Golden, Anthony Belton, on defense, they don't have a lot of depth at places like edge rusher. So where this team used to be able to have these waves of draft picks where they could bring them along slowly, where it felt like we have some optionality. Now, it feels like their path is narrower and more narrower and more fragile than it has been in a lot of years. And I think that puts a really big onus on Matt LaFleur in a way that they haven't even in the last few seasons. So I looked at over unders and I pick five new teams to make the playoffs. One of them's Baltimore, Detroit, Kansas City. I think I had the Giants.

I forget who the other one was. Saints. I like the Saints, actually. I think Tyler's arc was way better than I thought. But Baltimore had the highest over-under in the league. And I'm like, new coach, first-time play caller. I think Tyler Linderbom was a rock for the offensive line. How many years can you rely on Derek Henry to get into the end zone 15 times?

And Lamar last year looked like he lost like three miles an hour, which is a weird, you know, number to talk about with the quarterback, but like it's part of who he is. You were at their camp. Do you feel, for as well run and well owned as they are, I have questions with Baltimore. Do you? I think you have to just based on the way that last year went,

and there are some personnel things. You know, like their entire interior defensive line is hurt right now. Marlon Humphrey is clearly on the back half of his career. they're relying on him at outside corner. They're not without their warts, and there are some things that would have me sleeping a little bit uneasy if I were a Ravens fan. At the same time, though, I think I get it.

I understand why there is this level of optimism because even without Tyler Linderbaum, I think the offensive line will be significantly better this year. I'm really excited about what Declan Doyle can be as a play call. I mean, this is really going to be the first time we see somebody try to emulate what Ben Johnson has done over the last few years. picked off the Ben Johnson tree. Yeah, they did. And so if you think that Declan Doyle can be a really exciting offensive play caller, Jesse Minter has already shown he's one of the best defensive

coaches in the league. And I do think that there's an underlying level of talent here, even if there are some problem areas where if it clicks on both sides of the ball, if we have play callers on both sides of the ball that are really elevating everybody on that roster, I would not be shocked if we got to the end of the season. This was the best team in the AFC. I believe that that is within the realm of outcomes for them. Absolutely. Okay, so you go to all these camps and I'll say it. You've been Ravens, Cowboys, Rams, Chargers, Seahawks, Texans,

Panthers, Cardinals, Falcons, commanders, Jags at the Eagles. Has there been a camp you went to and you went, oh no, don't love it, something's not right? I'm going to guess commanders, but is there one that you just drove away thinking

not as tight as it needs to be? I think that because of the urgency, Washington is probably the answer to that, where you feel that last year and how much of a down swing it was, if they don't win now, I think they're going to be in a tough spot. Arizona, obviously, is just in a completely different spot as an organization. It doesn't matter if the Cardinals win four games this year. It matters if the commanders win four games this year. And so when you fire both your coordinators and you replace those guys, that's a message that things need to change in a hurry. And so, yeah, I think in terms of a combination of urgency and real questions about the roster, I would say that Washington is really the only team I've seen that checks both of those boxes.

you get your podcasts. John Middlkoff with the news. No, no, no, no, turn on the news. This is the Heard Line News. You know, Andy Reed, he's not shied away from the Mahomes returning and how good he's looked, you know, coming and first starting in OTAs and now in training camp. At a press conference this morning, Andy told reporters kind of where he's at with Patrick heading into the preseason games. There's a pretty good chance I don't play them.

And percentages are leading that way. And I don't know if I'll play him the second or third game. I mean, I don't know that. But percentage is probably lean against doing that and letting the other guys, we've got new people in those other positions and behind him that need some work. And so

the more reps they get, the better. Yeah, I don't worry too much about him. I just don't love. And I don't blame anybody. like Buffalo. I don't love their defensive roster. Kansas City, I think they've got holes. And the truth is, there's six or seven rosters in this league that just feel different. Seattle, Rams, Lions, Eagles, Ravens. Texans to me is kind of an under the radar, really, really good roster if they can get the O-line to stay healthy.

Where are you on the Chiefs? Well, I mean, I think there are some question marks with their young talent. They're going to need the defensive guys to really step up. That's how they turned it around three or four years. ago when they traded Tyreek Hill. They nailed McDuffey. They nailed Carl Loftus. Travis and Chris Jones were still in their prime. You know, Andy's been pretty consistent. The preseason, you were on this a long time ago. McVeigh changed the game and everyone kind of followed suit. But when you turned on a Chiefs game in the middle of August, you'd be like, is Mahomes still in there? Because he would play, he plays the older guys.

So I think this is pretty telling that maybe this is the start of the second half of this career where Mahomes days in these preseason games after this major injury. We might never see them as long as Andy Reid's there ever play a game in August again, which, I mean, how could you blame them? I just think the Chiefs are going to have a pretty big kind of chip on their shoulder, and you're going to get, I mean, they lost all those one-score games. Yeah, that's not going to be. I'd be stunned if they don't win.

Let's look at it. So they open up at home against two pretty good teams, Denver and Daniel Jones off an injury. That's a great Monday night game. I mean, that's a throwback to when I was young, Marty Schadenheimer versus Mike Shanahan. That game to me just feels like Monday night football. They're in a lot of, I mean, there is some. Back into that.

The division this year, one issue for both divisions is the West plays the West. So you get a lot of Seattle, obviously, Rams. You know, the Chiefs have owned the 49ers. They've just, I mean, I don't think that I don't think that. hours of beat him, so Scowcheonaghan. Listen to this matchup. My Holmes against Josh Allen at Buffalo next week at Matt Stafford, next week at Joe Burrow, next week Drake May, then Brock Purdy in the Niners, and then at Justin Herbert. Tough little stretch there, Colin.

It's hard to beat that level of quarterback week after week after week. Yeah, I know last year I was on the show and Edelman got mad at me because we were talking about, I think it was the Niners schedule at the time. how easy and you know that's you could never talk like that in new england but the facts are some schedules are easier than others no question that's a tough stretch uh arch manning he's uh favorite to be the number one overall pick in next year's draft uh manning obviously struggled early on in the season before going seven and one over the last eight games uh nick wright and our guys on uh first thing first had matt linered on the show and here's what he had to say about arch he started off

pretty slow last year, but as a season, you know, as a season went on, he was really good. He's built the right way. I actually kind of feel like there's less pressure on him this year. He put together a great season. There's a lot of hype around Texas this year. He has all of what you want in a quarterback, and it's not just the last name and the pedigree. Yeah, we'll see. I think their schedule's too rough.

I think road games are tough even for really good college teams. I mean, Nick Sabin figure that out. He lost a couple of games early at Alabama, and it's like, I'm not going to do any out-of-conference games on the road. We'll go to Jerry World. We'll play our out-of-conference games there. And I think Nick knew. It's just you just don't get 21-year-olds to play at their best when you have three or four. I mean, look at the road games.

Look at the schedule. So you go, Ohio State at home is great. At Tennessee is one of the loudest places. Red River, Oklahoma. Missouri has always been tough at home. at LSU, at A&M late. That's three brutal road games. Missouri is given Georgia trouble at home through the years.

And by the way, the home games, Oklahoma could knock them off. Tennessee's rough. That's a tough college schedule. Yeah, and the other thing is last year I remember watching, it was a night game in Austin when Arch ran all over A&M and kind of remember derailed them from going to the SEC championship game. A&M's got Texas money, right? I mean, they don't lack for fun.

So that is going to be, A&M's going to want some revenge and that bad boy. So it's, I just think in this day and age with NIL for the top programs with 40, 50 plus million dollar rosters, I think the pressure's never been higher because these guys are cutting these. You know, before, if you wrote a multi-million dollar check to an athletic program, you were like royalty at a booster. That now buys you a guard and a tackle. You know, so it's, I think the world's kind of changed with the, financial investment that it takes to fund these programs.

Let's dive into the Browns and your guy Shador Sanders. Come on. I'm watching the clips, baby. He's a great clip quarterback. I'll tell you that. No, he is. Shadour Sanders and D'Shawn Watson, they've been going at it. Despite the uncertainty under center, owner Jimmy Haslam is pretty excited about all the

young talent that they have accumulated over these last couple years. He spoke to the media recently about it. here, Colin. Well, I don't know about high expectations. Let's say improved expectations, okay? We're always careful, as you know, to set the expectations. And I think we have made giant strides in our talent level the last two years. And it takes these young guys a lot of time. And I think we had the chance to start double-digit first and second year players. And I don't care how good you are. It takes a little bit of time to improve. But we're really excited about the roster we've assembled.

become the cold weather, Jerry Jones. He talks a lot. He's got some opinions. Can I go glass half full on the Browns? So, my mind. Clearly, you know, Andrew Barry is a big time we learn dealer. You know, he comes from the Howie Roseman school.

Jimmy Haslam got involved with the Deshawn Watson thing, blew up in his face. But last year, remember, he admitted it. Like, we swung for the fences and we struck out. One thing you can't take away from, we've been talking all week about certain organizations, not spend the money,

money. The Chargers have Justin Herbert and an actual cash. I think they're 31st or 32nd in the league this year in terms of spending on players. Jimmy Haslam spends. Every single year, he's right there with Jeffrey Lurie, the 49ers, the Bills and the Ravens spent a bunch of money. Look at these draft picks. I mean, the kid, Carson Swessinger from UCLA is a home run. Mason Graham from Michigan's been very good. I mean, they have not, KC. Concepcion and Boston, again, the viral clips have been outstanding. They have hit on a lot of picks. If they could just find a quarterback, and we'll give them credit. I know the Browns took a little heat on the Miles Garrett deal, like they didn't get enough. If they just would have got two ones and a two, you were trying to

draft a Jared Verst. They literally got Jared Verst, who, because he's a first round pick, is under contract, if you pick up his fifth year option, for the next three years. I thought the Browns did great on that trade. I did too. I saw a clip of he's, you know, in the top 100 players Kyle Eusecheck, who's been playing him multiple times a year for the last couple of years, said he's the most underrated player in the league. I mean, his sack numbers aren't great, but he's dominant against the run. Oh, he's a power rusher. He just bowl, he wears you out over a game.

I think you could argue of young D-Linman in the first couple years. He'd be near the top of the list, I mean, to have a chance to, you know, I think one day if they could improve the sack numbers to compete for a defensive player of the year. So listen, the quarterback maker breaks your franchise, and they, you know, unless your door turns into Deonic quarterback, probably don't have one. But they got a lot of stuff going for them. Haven't looked it up. She was prominent around the same time. Yeah. Then Mary Steenbergin. Why are you guys talking to me? I'm worried. Why are you talking so down to me that you think I don't understand your little play game? I just really, I get it.

I'm trying to set you up for success here. So that's going to be interesting. Now in Buffalo, Joe Brady was the play caller. He is now the head coach, so I'm sure he'll still be on the headset. Chris Sims came in earlier today, and he's really out on Buffalo. Buffalo is not a Super Bowl team.

They're not to me. They have a Super Bowl first ballot Hall of Fame superstar quarterback that I think fools us. But yeah, I mean, again, I think when you think about it at a base level, if I go on the street and go down New York City and go, hey, you know, who's the best player in Buffalo's defense? I think most people go, I'm not sure. I don't see it with their roster to go, for me to go, I think they're a Super Bowl team. I think they're a playoff team.

But as you know, there's a difference between a team you put in the Super Bowl window and the playoff window. And I just don't think they're that. I think we put them there because the guy is one of the freakiest players we've ever seen in the history of the sport. Yeah, they got their offense right, tight end. DJ Moore now, James Cook, Dionne Dawkins, left tackle, Alan. They've got the offense set with some veteran players and high-end players.

There's not a lot of stuff on the defensive side. Now, they've spent some draft capital on defense. It's a lot of young guys. We see if they flourish. But Brandon Bean, you know, he's the GM that when Sean McDermott suggested to Brandon Bean during the season, we need more help on defense. Brandon Bean took exception to that. And the truth is, they don't have a lot of great talent in the building under 25.

They are currently ranked 29th in the league in talent under 20. They are not the Rams, lions, Eagles, Ravens, Seahawks. They do not have that roster. They remind me a little bit of San Francisco where there's elements to San Francisco. I like a lot. Kyle Shanahan, McCaffrey, Kittles still elite, Trent Williams, Bosa when he's healthy, Fred Warner. But I just feel like they're just too old. And I think with Buffalo, they just don't have enough dudes on defense.

but again, if I had to bet today, if I look at the AFC, I just kind of think, you know, I mean, Baltimore is a threat. They got a rookie coach too. As Bo Nicks, you know, you can't get home field advantage if you're Denver in that division, can you? I don't know. I'm a little higher on Buffalo because I like their offensive talent. We'll see how it works.

Half the league now, over half the league has new play callers. So there's an urgency in the league that you just don't get. as much time. Chris Sims also talked a little bit about Arch Manning. I'm watching Carson Beck last night and Haynes King. And my take is NIL is the reason those guys are so good. They stayed in college one more year. And especially in Carson Beck's situation at Miami, he's practicing every day with 15 NFL

guys. Some are coming out past draft. Some are coming out next draft. Like Tony, he'll be the best receiver in the country next year. I think he's a sophomore. But the point being is, when you stay longer in college, you're getting 12 to 15 more quality opponents if you're in the Big Ten, if you're Miami, if you're in the SEC.

And it's like it just helps the player. It helps the quarterback. And what if Arch Manning, with that brutal Texas schedule, loses a couple of games, you know, they have a really good season, but somebody steps up in the donor pool. He makes $8 million a year, and the Jets have the, the number one pick. I wouldn't go to the Jets unless they brought Sark as the head coach. I'm not going to the Jets. And I'm not sure if I would go to Arizona, although I like the indoor

weather. I like playing inside. I do think LeFleur is an interesting coach to keep your eye on. I think they have the best tied end McBride right now, maybe in the NFL, some interesting running back. They got love out of Notre Dame. So Arizona, I probably would go. I would I think Arizona's got some interesting offensive talent and an offensive coach. But Chris Sims, who went to Texas, says, yeah, I could see Archmanning staying in college. Will the situation be right as far as the team that's going to draft him? How does he play this year? And does he feel ready?

You know, the college starts matter. You're seeing that in the NFL, right? I mean, the last time we saw Anthony Richardson, what were talking about? Oh, he's only played 11 games. I don't know if it would be ready in the NFL. Here we are in year four. We're still talking about the same thing with them. So yeah, it's very important.

And I think he'll make the right decision there as far as evaluating the year, see where he's at, see the situation of the draft. But I don't think it's crazy to think that he could come back one more year. Remember, the big money in college sports is football. So your big donors are on the football side. So, you know, Michigan paid some basketball players. But if Arch Manning comes back to Texas, got a couple of sponsorships, it's not crazy to think he'd make $8 million a year. Here, no state tax in Texas. Austin's probably, arguably, the best college town in America.

It's not that crazy. My guess is he comes out. Dante Moore comes out for sure. You know, CJ Carr's coming out. Lenora Sellers coming out. But here's the other thing is, you know, there's going to be one of these quarterbacks that looks up and goes, I don't want to be the fifth quarterback taken. You know, it's going to be a couple of guys that are like looking around and

going, okay, Arch is going one and Dante's going two. And it's like, I'm not going to be the fourth quarterback taken. Although you could argue being the fourth quarterback, sometimes you end up with a much better coach. Bo Nix, by the way, certainly benefited being drafted later. So I don't know. I can't wait for the college football season. I'm all fired up on this.

Best Oregon team ever. Ohio State, Miami. I think Ohio State will be better offensively. I don't know if Miami can be better defensively. Ohio State, Oregon, Notre Dame, Miami are my four. Do you have a four? Those are my four. I don't think, I think Texas schedule is too brutal.

I don't think George is spectacular offensively. Gunter Stockton, Notre Dame, Miami, Oregon, Ohio State are my four. Yeah, I got a lot of question marks with a lot of teams. I'd say I feel the best about Oregon and Notre Dame. you know, Miami's replacing a lot, right, on that defensive line. I was reading yesterday, Messador's looked awesome. Of course he did.

Do you watch that guy in college? Well, he's got two great first round talent receivers as well. So I just think that it's pretty wide open, I think, at the top ten. You know, Indiana can they maintain this? Georgia goes to the SEC championship game every year, which means they'll be in the playoffs. And their quarterback's a little hit or miss. One thing I wonder, though, Colin, what do these college kids do with all these millions of dollars? Well, they give it to their friends.
