But now Phil, he's got a blue shirt on. It's kind of coincidental after that Giants opening win. Now, I told you guys the Giants were going to be a playoff team.

I don't buy into this lack of talent. I mean, look at Phil Sims. Might as well be an ambassador for the Giants. Look at that clean cut. The hair looks good. Everything. Hey, let's talk about this. So the NFL's getting younger.

My thing was, listen, there's talent. Brian Abdul Carter was a great college player. Scataboo got hurt. Neighbors. Mauiaga, Maui Noah has been a dominant off. He was the road grader of the college draft. I'm like, guys, if Arvel Reese is as good as we think, they got nine or ten like special players.

So you tell me as a former giant, tell me about the camp. I mean, because I thought I'm watching Abdul Carter, Did he have a good camp because he looked ready to go? Magnificent. Ed Bill Carter, you know, a few things there, though. When you talk about, yes, they have the talent. They got a lot of dudes who can make plays. And one of them is the quarterback who has been nothing special every time he's walked out there.

But Abdul Carter, if you're, you know, I watch the Giants, of course, every week and watch their film and all that. And he came on strong last year at the end of the year. And he turned it right over and went to training camp. And he was the same guy, maybe even better. So, you know, people around here, you know, kind of, oh, where's Abdul Carter? He's not what we thought he was. No, he's everything you thought he was. Yeah.

Hey, you've got to adapt to the league. You just can't come in and have great success sometimes. He'd learned and his talent shows now. You know, it's interesting. I was a little, you know, I didn't know about Joe Shane. Let's be fair here. Oh, he's killing it. His last three drafts.

Like, we've got to be fair here. All the top drafts. neighbors has been banged up and scataboo was a mid-round draft he has not missed on these top drafts and who the heck knows who can play in the fifth round some of that's just luck but i will say we've got to be we've got to be fair on shows like this we beat him up because he didn't he said a couple soundbites on hbo i didn't like i mean what's his standing right now with amara family oh man well he hits it's big i mean listen the last three drafts he's hit it three years years ago, he drafted every one of them is on the football team and most of them are starting.

They're making contributions. So there's a lot to be proud of. You know, the Giants have rebuilt their team in the last two years. And, you know, moving around and doing what they did to get Jackson Dart. I mean, right now, who would you take Jackson Dart or Cam Ward when you watch them play? Oh, it's not even close. Jackson, I'll say this. If you look, I was talking about this the other day.

Because offensive linemen don't play in the preseason anymore. O-line play is awful in September. If you're just static in the pocket, it's a disadvantage. I mean, you watch Caleb Williams, Lamar, Josh Allen, Jackson, I watched Jackson play at Ole Miss. I didn't think he was this athletic. I should have listened to Charlie Weiss. Is he better than you thought?

Oh, yeah, absolutely. I eat those words almost every day through people between that and Cam Scataboo, who I thought, why are they drafting him? What's he going to do? He's a novelty act. And then I see him play in a few days. I go, wow, he's got it. He's a true NFL running back.

But Jackson Dart, yeah, he's a better thrower of the ball. He literally Colin doesn't miss. It's hard to look at any game he's played in in the pros where somebody was open and he missed him. And the other thing is he's just got great charisma. He's one of the guys, the players love him. And the other thing is, he's smart. You know, so when you watch that Dallas game Sunday night,

There wasn't maybe but a few plays where he came up and just ran the play. He was always checking, telling people what to do. And, you know, when you have to do that as a quarterback sometimes, it takes the pressure off of you because you feel good because you're directing what's going on on the field. And I thought he was great against the doubt. You know, there is something about the Harbaas. As you know, some coaches are scheme coaches, Andy Reid, Kyle Shanahan. I think D'Amico Ryan's defensively is he's kind of controlling the chess pieces.

And then there are coaches that are, and I think the Harbaas are this. They're not scheme coaches. They're culture builders. I think, so their walk-around coach, they're culture builders. The Giants almost more than any team in the league almost had a perfect game one. Now, let's go to the previous seven years. So we saw Denver with a good coach implode. We saw the Rams with McVeigh implode.

The Giants were nearly perfect. In your opinion, what is it about the Harbaugh's? The Chargers had the worst defense in the league. Jim Harbaugh took the Chargers over there, number one the next year. Some of these guys can maybe Parcells had that. Urban Meyer and College had that. You've been there. What is the sauce for the quick turnaround coaches?

What's the commonality? Well, it's many things with Harbaugh. He's truthful to you. He has a great presence. He conducts themselves the right way. He creates an atmosphere on the practice field that takes the players a while to get used to. And, you know, I'm around them a lot. And I'd hear some of the guys, oh, my gosh, we're running in this.

And I said, well, tell me what it is. And they tell me, oh, come on, man, that's nothing. And but when he walks into the room, I'll always tell this. And I'll try to tell it fast. John Harbaugh has what Dan Reeves had. Dan Reeves, we had two losing seasons. He walks into the room to greet the team for the first time. He puts his yellow pat on the lectern.

He looks at all of us. The whole team is there. And he goes, sit up straight, put your feet on the floor and take those damn hats off. And I mean, I was like, oh, my gosh. And I turned to Bart Olds in my center and go, we're going to win. And John Harbaugh kind of has that same quality. When he walks into the room and makes the players. sit up straight, know what's coming, and they can trust him. And you see him on the sidelines.

Oh, the players love him. They love him, yeah, because, Colin, when you lose really bad for a couple years or more years than that, and when you finally see the light and you play well and you play a game against the great Dallas Cowboys and all that and win and win the way they play, yeah, that will make you happy. And that just makes you closer to the coach. And what I mean by that is you're going to when he tells yourself and you go okay got it because coach knows and he has shown that you know the um we've talked today about there there is this is always football's always going to be a cage match i mean it it's there's a military play to it like you need strong men willing to sacrifice themselves it's hard not perfectly an alley it's hard you know like football

practice is hard and there are the one of the things i like about scataboo and i like about Jackson Dart is that they're almost a little manic. Like Scataboo is almost inappropriate. And Jackson Dart, you're like, brother, slide. There is, I want you to go back, maybe Bavaro had this, maybe there's certain giants. There is something about guys that are an inch away from out of control that sets the tempo. I mean, you watch the Green Bay defense without Micah. It is not the same defense.

guy because of his style. Go back to your, I mean, Scataboo to me and Dart are kind of like live and let live. We're going to be a little wild. I think it bleeds through the team. Oh, I mean, come on. When you look at Scataboo, you go, well, he can't be an NFL running back. You know, he's not tall enough. He's thick. You know, he's got legs like Earl Campbell. So, you know, that kind of helps. But yeah, you know, and as I watched him in Arizona State and I just went, whatever, but totally wrong. And kind of the same as you asked me about Jackson Dart. He's a better athlete than I thought he would be.

His running is real. And most of all, throwing the football, it's he, like I said, he doesn't miss. But yes, we had two guys on the end of our defense that were, you know, would change the makeup of our team. Carl Banks and Lawrence Taylor. So the energy, whatever they did, there was just something about them that really gave the whole team energy. When they were playing well, man, the team would be on fire and play well.

That's why we won some Super Bowls because really those two sitting the edge were just one of the big reasons why our defense was so great. You know, we were talking about like obviously Caleb Williams is a hit. Like everybody in Chicago knows, back up the Brinks Trump, we're paying them. Oh, wait, Colin. When you talk about Caleb Williams, I don't want to hear about his completion percentage, as people say. Oh, he's got to work on his completion percentage. Why? He throws the ball down the field.

He's looking for big plays. So he's not going to hit 75%. So I think he was awesome last year and I expected him be the same way this year. Sorry to interrupt you. No, no, no. We were talking about Bo Nix. And I said, Bo Nix played so many college games, 61, that he came into the league. he was closer to his ceiling.

And Sean Payton needed that because if you remember his first year, they gave up all these draft picks for Russell Wilson, so they didn't have draft capital to move up, and they had dead cap money. They needed an inexpensive quarterback, and he's like, I like Bow Nix. Right. But in Bo Nix played all these college games.

So he was way more experienced than ready to go. But now you're getting to the point, okay, it's year three. You're going to make a decision by Thanksgiving. Are we paying him? Because if you look at NFL history, teams that don't pay after that third year, generally it's not your guy. Third year, generally it's not your guy. Is there something, his passer rating in his last five or six starts is in the 70s,

everything's a dump off underneath? Tell me, what is a quarterback thinking when they continually go underneath? Is it called? Is it fear? What is it? Yeah, well, there's a few things there. One, maybe you don't trust your throwing. You know, you don't control the football that day the way you want.

That's going to change you. You know, there were times I would play, and maybe it was the wind, the rain, whatever, and somebody could be open down the field. I don't think I'd know. Check it down and wait for somebody. It's wide open to throw it down there. So, you know, they can go back and forth.

Sean Payton last year, and I used to make fun of this, he designs more plays to throw it deep down the field than probably anybody in the NFL. And it's a lot. I mean, they find many ways in preseason to be throwing it down the field because he's putting plays in even during preseason games. So, you know, Bow Nicks, the pressure just going to Monday when they played Monday or Sunday night, whatever night that was, Monday night, is they were not separating the wide receivers, that hurting. And then, you know, once you start getting roughed up and all that, it kind of changes the way you think about the game.

And I saw it really disrupt who he is. It was by far the worst game I've seen he play as a pro so far in his career. Week one, when you were a quarterback, you played in the preseason. Week one now, I don't know what I'm getting. I have no idea. Now, obviously, you know, Shanahan, offensive coaches, Andy Reid, have been great week one guys, great September guys. What should we take overall from week? Who would have guessed the Giants may have played the most complete football game?

What do we take now that nobody plays in the preseason from week one? Well, I think some of these teams are showing you it can be different. You know, we heard all the stuff about Andy Reid and training camp, which I find hilarious. The players almost embrace it. He's not easy. He's tough as hell. And they practice for a long time when they go on that field. And the players get used to it and it keeps them tough.

And, you know, they might not have to play all their starters. that much in preseason because what they do in training camp on the field. So, you know, I said this earlier today, the Giants, the Jets, the Bengals, Kansas City, Jacksonville, San Francisco, they all had something in common. Man, they were letting it go in training camp. They were practicing hard and you could read the articles and what did all those teams they won? And that's what you see. You can only get good at something by practicing it. And a lot teams don't. You know, what did Jim Harbaugh say? Maybe

I should have played them more in preseason. Maybe we should practice a little harder and real. And I think everybody is so afraid of getting somebody hurt that it changes who they can be after they get done with training camp. Man, those New York Giants.

That does, you wake up in a better mood when the Giants are good, don't you? Oh. I was a nervous wreck watching the game because they're playing so well, I just go, oh, can this continue? And I knew if something went wrong, maybe one turnover or something like that at the wrong time, that the Cowboys, you know, listen, Doc Prescott, he's the real deal. I mean, Doc, if you let him sit back there and don't pressure him a little, he's going to pick you apart with his players and with that

offensive line, whatever in front of him. So, but they never gave the Cowboys really a chance to win the game and to conduct an offense that, literally just did everything well. As a next quarterback, I'm like, man, what's that like to play the game and just constantly have the right play? Don't miss, you know, Jackson Dart probably threw about four or five footballs in that game that were top-level elite. And they needed those to win the game.

Can you do that every week? No. But it was a great start for the Giants and for their key players. Almost all of them played really. Yeah, really well. Long drives, time-eating drives. It was a beautiful thing to watch, Phil Sims. And you look good, Phil. I don't know what you're doing. They're taking your magnesium in your... I do take that at night. Yes, magnesium, but it works. You know, J-Mack, you should do, once you get old.

I take magnesium. It's unbelievable. It's the one thing I take, what's the thing in the fish oil in the morning? What's that called? What's that? Do that? Oh, what would you call? Omega-3. Omega-3. Oh, take Omega-3, Phil. Okay. Hey, I'll do anything to try to stay, to feel better and to do what I want to do. So it's a battle, that's for sure. But so far, I'm hanging in there a little bit, so it's good. You look great. Good seeing you. All right, bud. Thanks for having me on.

You bet. Magnesium at night, Jim, you take it too? I take it at night, yeah, yeah, yeah. The soil in America apparently doesn't provide enough magnesium. Because I've been taking it now. My daughter told me to take it two years ago. It's unbelievable game changer. I got to say, Phil Sims, do you remember how good he was in the end? 80s with the Giants? His story was so good.

With Bill Parcells are so good. Those teams, they were formidable. I didn't hate them back then when I was a Jets fan. I didn't hate, now I load the Giants. Well, cannot stand them. You think you'd grow out of that at some point. Yeah, you'd think you would, but sometimes... You know, I think if the Jets were more formidable for the last 20 years, you'd be more

secure in your sports fandom. But the Jets have been so bad, it just irritates you. Yeah, and I'm crabby and angry, and I just like a lot of other teams. No, they were just tough physical. The Giants. The linebacking crew was one of the best, maybe in league history. Was it Carson's? We had Parcells.

You had Belichick. And they had another linebacker. And Joe Morris was running. They were on TV every week. Bavaro. They were just a good team. Harry Carson. That was the third line.

talking about what type of performance he expect from his team. It's going to be outstanding energy. You know, the city of Buffalo is this, uh, it's a night that they deserve, right? And, um, um, it's going to be an outstanding environment and it's it's where we want to be and we want to play under the lights and we want to do all that so let's embrace it you know and now it's an opportunity for us to show kind of our conviction and what we believe in and not feel like we have to put on a show more concerned we're trying to put on a clinic high mark stadium so uh i i looked it's up because i have this one um last time they met you remember that game by name it's bills 48 lions 42 i don't when was those were dominated i think two years ago bills were dominating

leading by 21, most of the game, 14. Wasn't that close. The Detroit secondary has not improved. They'll be points in this game. Joe Brady was calling plays. Yeah. I think this is Buffalo comfortable. Oh, boy. Well, some of the data, when you look into overtime games on a Sunday,

playing in a short week, last 20 years, four and 17 against the spread. Not good. It's just not good. You played an extra quarter of football base. That's fair. That's fair. You know?

I like your research. I like your, well, but I can say Buffalo had to play. against super physical Houston on the road. Also true. And last year, I think it was maybe last year or two years ago. Teams that played Houston struggled the next week because you get paid up. Same with San Francisco. And you play the Niners because they're so physical, you play bad the next week.

I just can't get over the, I mean, the Detroit secondary, how bad they were against Tyler Shuck. Well, Tyler Shuck may be good. He's not Josh Allen. I'm not, I'm just saying he may be they found their guy. Tyler Shuck or Jackson Dart, who you got? Jackson Dart. Oh, you're in love with him. No, I just, he is.

Other guys look at you as the quarterback. When they see you and they see you, you know, feeling a certain way or your body language a certain way, it kind of trickles through the team. So the talent and all that, bro, is right there. It's shit right there in front of us and we see it.

Yeah, I didn't notice his, I think I've noticed body language before. Aaron Rogers and his prime would get moody and you're like, oh, Aaron's on one. I didn't notice C.J. Straud's body language. I do. Jay Cutler would have that. You're like, oh, you lost Jay for the day. No, I mean, I've seen guys where Aaron and Jay Cutler guys, you'd see the body language and you're like, you lost them. I don't know if I buy this.

I don't buy C.J. Stroud, I didn't notice. Like he's saying, so our guys edited some C.J. Stroud bad body language. Is this the video of bad body language? I just don't understand. How was that bad? Well, our staff went and found it. Yeah, but what's bad about that? Let me see.

Yeah, I don't really see it. I didn't notice it. He's got a weak offensive line. David Montgomery had a good game, but whatever. Nico Collins excellent. They put up points on points on the bills. if their defensive back catches that interception in the end zone with 90 seconds left, this isn't even a talking point. You're right.

And again, Stroud drove them down the field inside to the red zone and then his offensive line crumbles and he gets sacked. I don't know. I'm a St.J. Stroud guy. I would take him with the Jets. I think he's talented. He's good. Final story, Colin, let's go to the Raiders. Raiders Dolphins.

This is funny. Well, not funny. This is good footage of Fernando Mendoz on the sideline. So, interestingly, during the game, he was taking what's called mental reps, the play would come in, he would look at the play call on his wrist as if he were in the huddle telling the guy he's reciting the play and then he's thinking about the checks and telling the assistant coach what are the potential other options. I like that.

I kind of like this. So the quarterback coach here is Mike Sullivan. And he's giving pre-snap reads. To me, this is a sign that Mendoza is probably going to be in there sooner than later. Well, I mean, they want him to play. I don't know what that means, but I like the idea. Raiders look organized. No, I'm sure they do.

This could be a Coobee acting. I'm sure this is normal, but I don't recall seeing this level of intricacy from the backup quarterback. Now, maybe they just are showing this because it's Mendoza, but I don't recall a lot of videos. When I watch that game, first of all, very reliant on Ashton Genty, which is fine because Brock Bowers was out. Beck made a nice, had a touchdown. Naylor, I think they're talent again. It's not great, but I think offensively they got some pieces. I watched the game and my takeaway is, well, Kirk Mendoza could throw two interceptions too.

You put Kirk Cousins in to play clean. Not because you're getting some dynamic athlete. If you're going to throw two picks, well, I can get that from Mendoza. And he's getting the getting the reps, getting the live. But by way, we should give them credit, is ideally you would love, you know, Lamar Jackson played in week 11. Patrick Mahomes played in the final week. Like, I have no problem as a rookie.

watching Alex Smith, which Mahomes did, or Joe Flacco, Kirk Cousins, like a Flacco or an Alex Smith is a pro. He's a good guy. He's a good teammate. We have multiple opportunities or multiple examples. Flacco and Alex Smith, you just kind of show the young guy. This is the work habits. This is the line of scrimmage pre-snap operation. The only problem is those guys weren't number one picks.

They weren't expected to be the savior. Joe Burrow, they toss them right into the fire, number one pick. You know, C.J. Strach one, two, toss them right into the fire. Like, I don't know. Nobody knows what the right answer is. But what's telling to me, look at that screen, Colin. Chargers, six and a half.

This was seven and a half. To come off to seven, everybody's selling the Chargers that much, unless somebody knows something about the McConkey injury. But that is a stunner to me. Remember, preseason, 10 days ago, oh, Chargers laying the lumber to the Raiders. Later, Raider, stink. And now it's like under a touchdown at home?

I think Chargers probably need to deserve a look for the Blazing Five, no? Maybe, maybe one of our picks. I got my first three down. Three already on Wednesday. You're like Matthew McConaughey and two for the money. Just firing off midweek. Okay. Gotcha.

That's a great gambling movie if you're into it. Uncut gems is my favorite. Oh, really? Oh, it's very good. Sandler's best. I will say he was good in that, but that movie was just, too chaotic. That's my life.

Fox College Football Friday, get your weekend started with a Texas-sized showdown. as 22nd ranked Houston takes on Will Hammond and the defending Big 12 champion Texas Tech Red Raiders.

Friday night, 8 Eastern on Fox. Well, it's a conference game, so it's good. By the way, the best game of the weekend, LSU at Ole Miss. It's a conference game. When college football traditionalists, I don't like changes. We haven't even made the biggest change yet in college football. If I was Commissioner College football, the number one change I would make,

conference play week one. in week zero before the season starts, go ahead and play Youngstown State. Week one into conference play. I'd have everybody play 12 conference games, six homes, six away. You get one extra home game if you want to play week zero and play Citadel. You can pack the stadium, make more revenue to pay all your players, six conference games. You know, we're all talking about all these changes that bother everybody. College football, number one issue.

has always been scarcity of big games in September. It always limps into the season. October and November, conference play, it's great. NFL, first game, rematch of the Super Bowl. Second game, huge rivalry. Rams, Niners. College, there's one game this weekend that's like, wow, Ole Miss and LSU in Oxford.

That's like, okay, that's Lane Kiffin going back. You got to watch that. NFL gave you two of those within the first two games. So, you know, oh, we're going a 24 team. The reason I want a 24-team playoff, because ultimately I want teams willing to play more big games. When USC and Notre Dame took a sabbatical and said, okay, we're going to redo this down the road.

You know why they pushed it down the road? Because they're waiting for a 24-game playoff to be intact. because once it's a 24 team playoff, you can lose three games and get into the playoff. If you're a big dog from the Big Ten or the SEC, you could lose three games. If you lost three close, you lost two road games close and had one bad home loss, you could get in. You can't now. So everybody's like, you know, that's why Texas, Oklahoma, I'm not going to drop Ohio State for losing. They lost close.

One yard decided the game. They could have won the game. It was in Austin. I'm not dropping Ohio. state at all. I appreciate they played close. I mean, they played nearly a perfect first half. You can't ask college kids to play four great quarters against somebody as good as Texas in Austin. If you can get two great quarters and lead at half, you feel you've conquered the world. So, yeah, we always talk about changes in college football. I would get rid of out-of-conference

games. I mean, if you went into conference games immediately like the NFL does, I mean, go last weekend. You didn't think, did you really think Washington, Philadelphia was going to be that good? Well, I mean, it ended up being a really good watch. I know you're connected with the A.Ds. Don't those non-conference games against North Texas and stuff, don't they pay and fund like, you know, significantly some of these smaller athletic departments? Well, you don't think if you play conference games where you have sellouts instead of having empty seats against San Diego State? Yeah. So, I mean, again, I'll give you one of them. In week zero, go week one or zero, play your nonsense. and get your extra home game.

I'm not giving you eight home games. I'll give you seven. Isn't that a preseason game? You know, some teams are still in the preseason. Give me three preseason cupcakes. I don't want three. Then September stinks.

Yeah, but the team needs those to build up to come from display. I watched Texas, Oklahoma. Did they get three preseason games? They played a great game. Wait, Texas Ohio State? Well, Texas, Ohio State, I'm sorry. Well, Texas played a horrible first time. I watched, I watched Michigan, Western Michigan look great in week one.

Western Michigan looked great. I watched Michigan in Week 2 look good. You keep telling me these kids need all these preseason games. I watch Texas, Oklahoma. Ohio State played a perfect first half. How was that possible? They didn't have joint scrimmages against Purdue. They didn't have preseason games.

How is it possible? It's called coaching. Kurt Signetti's teams have no penalties and turnovers. Immediately. It's called coaching. Put the pressure on the coaches. The other problem is you lose like week one, like Clemson gets dusted. This season's over.

They're done. They're not going to the playoffs. We know that. No chance. That's not. So apparently LSU can lose this. If you look at the schedules, LSU can lose and still have a lot of bites at the Apple to get into the playoffs.

Ole Miss, they don't have a lot of great chances for wins down the road. And the Ole Miss fans are saying we must win. We've got to win this. The college football fans that freak out about change, get ready for the two biggest. 24 team playoffs, I'm for. I'm for it. And get right into conference.

play. It just makes no, every year in September, I am chomping at the bit for college football, and I may get two games a weekend I'm fired up for. Yeah. So Ohio, sorry, Ole Miss, LSU. Well, it's the Lane Kiffin game. And I think the Friday game, it's a big 12 rivalry game, like Houston and Texas Tech, that's a game. That's a conference game. So it matters. There's a lot of fun stuff I think we'll be doing on LSU tomorrow, the Lane Kiffin. People are going crazy. I just read the Lane Kiffin book. How was that? he's lived a lot of life that's your guy right well i think he's a very good coach and a very good recruit i don't think he's a pro coach he's a college coach he's got some rabbit ears so we got to be

careful what we say on well he's he's he's very good i don't think when you're at ls u s u or ohio state or notard dame those jobs you don't need to be a troll i think it was i think it served him at old miss because old miss doesn't get attention right right right and georgia does and ls u and Alabama does. But once you get, once you graduate to an Ohio state or a top seven program, you don't need to be a troll anymore at Oregon. You don't need to be a troll at LSU or Ohio State. It's tough to turn that off. Once you become a troll, you're a troll. That's what he is. You stopped wearing earrings. They took me 20 years to get past that thing. Lane's waiting to get respectability at LSU and Baton Rouge. I don't know if that's happening. Go Ole Miss.
