Well, I'm just saying a good day for Oregon. What do you have against Oklahoma? Have you been to Norman, by the way? No, I heard it's lovely in December. I cannot confirm that, but I've heard nice things. Yeah, I got nothing against Oklahoma. They don't like me. That's unfortunate because I was so right on Baker Mayfield.

But I used to put Lincoln Riley on when he coached Oklahoma. I put him on every single year. I put Bob Stoops on all the time. Their grudge against me is sad, and it hurts. But, you know, life is painful. J-MAC, with the news. No, no, no, no, no. Turn on the news.

This is the Hurdline News. I haven't talked enough about the NFL MVP race. It seems like it's just Hertz and Mahomes. Would you agree? I think Burroughs got a shot if he runs the table. Okay. Well, Hertz and Mahomes are definitely playing at an MVP level. Burroughs are also playing well, but Hertz is 13 and 1.

Now, this shoulder injury could mean he misses some time. We still don't, they haven't ruled him out for Sunday, so who knows. Mahomes has jumped into the top spot, according to Fox bet. Bit of a surprise here, Colin. Mahomes minus 333, meaning you got to lay $333 to win 100. Hertz is second at plus 350. Well, you agree with this? I think it's go either way.

If Hertz misses two games, I give it to Mahomes, it's a go either way. There's an argument to be made for both. But availability does become, you know, the bottom line is if it's a baseball, MVP race and one guy missed 30 games, you know, and one guy missed eight. I mean, so if he, if Jalen Hertz misses two starts and Mahomes doesn't miss any and it's go either way, then you give it to Mahomes who's in a tougher conference. Mahomes faces Seattle a wretchedly poor defense this weekend. However, weather could play a factor, maybe a big run game at Arrowhead because the wins in northern games. Have you seen the temperatures in Montana and Minnesota? I've never been to

I never have ever looked at the weather in Montana. Minus 45 degrees. Seriously? Now, we have this air mass that is the coldest on record. Wyoming was minus 60 degrees yesterday in some parts. Wyoming's beautiful, but not when it's minus 60. What? No.

Minus 60 degrees? Yeah. I just, I'm out. If it's minus it, like, check please. I've never been in minus temperatures in my life. I've been at like four or five degrees. Oh, come on. I've shoveled driveways in negative.

degree temperature of Pennsylvania. It's like my family's like, I love the winter of the snow. I'm like, I'll see you guys in three hours. I'm going to shovel the driveway. Dude, you know how soft I am? I take, you know those heat packets that like warm up? I put one in each boot and in the gloves while I was shoveling the driveway with a snowblower.

My wife's ski, she puts the electrical gloves on. Oh, I'm like, part of skis, I use worker gloves. Part of the fun of skiing is being a little chilly. No fun in that. Next up. Alfa. Dion Sanders. New head coach obviously at Colorado. going to make a big impact right away. He sat down with our own Shannon Sharp for the club

Shay Shay podcast and spoke about why he believes he's the best recruiter in college football. You're not right I am. I'm not selling nothing. Right. I am who I am. You want exposure. I'm going to give you exposure. Right. We know how to use social media like no other. Right. And we didn't even have the resources at Jackson. Right. Now we do. We have a whole team. Right. A whole plethora of people that's designed specifically to make you, shine. And I'm going to help you do that. Yeah, I think he'd be a good recruiter. Colorado's got

a lot to sell. Beautiful stadium in the Rockies. Dion Sanders, Power 5 Conference. There's no problem. Long time ago, wasn't that long ago, they were winning bowl games. What, 1990?

With Eric Biedemy? Yeah, I voted him. Not that long ago, 30 years ago? They're not going to win national title. why can't they win seven to eight games a year with Dion. You think Dionne saying he's the best recruiter in the country? They're going to win seven, eight games? It takes more than, I think Nick Saban's won that title.

But I think Dion will do very well. Is this before or after UCLA and USC leave the conference? Well, Colorado, whenever they've been good, has done very well in California recruiting. So prime time comes to Los Angeles, steals a few receivers, corners. He'll be, he's going to be, he may not be able to sell an, a D-Lignment or an O-Lignment, but I mean, if you're a speed player, if you're a highly skilled speed player, you probably grew up with a Dion poster, or you were at least aware of it. Maybe not a poster, but you were aware of it.

Listen, shocker, I was never a big time. If I was a great receiver or corner, I'd go on a visit to Colorado to see Deon. Well, wait a second. Listen, I was never a high-profile Division I recruit. But if I were a receiver, wouldn't I want to just go play with the best quarterback? That's going to have your best chance to get to the NFL? Colorado doesn't have to get the best guys, but if they can get in the conversation of the fifth best corner in L.A., the fifth best, they don't have to get the best. USC is going to usually get that or somebody.

But the bottom line is they're not even getting, they're not getting anything. So can he get in the living room of parents who have a four-star safety? He didn't have to get five-star guys. Can he get really good three-and-four-star guys and make them an eight-win program? So can he compete with Oregon, who's apparently got a lot of an I-I-O-M-O-K, so he can't compete with Oregon? The Oregon's got Phil Knight. They can't write those checks. So what about Arizona State and Arizona? Hold on. Let me explain. Absolutely.

You think your kids want to go to the pool parties around the clock in Arizona and great weather? Or do you want to go in the mountains? Find me the year, Arizona. Find me the decade Arizona State's been consistently good in football. Jake the steak plumber, whenever that was. I was like two years. Went to one at Rose Bowl. Colorado is at, they're not, they'll never be USC as a brand. They'll never be Oregon because of their money.

They don't have the history of UCLA or Washington. may not have the stability of Utah, but can they get to a bowl game? Good God, Oregon State's got the right coach. They won 10 games. You get the right coach. You can win a lot of games fast in these conferences. There's a lot of bad coaching. Listen, it's one thing to dominate where Dion was.

Kyle Winningham, he's seeing these comments. Okay? Kyle Winningham probably beats Colorado by 40 next to you. Maybe more. Well, the other thing is he's really taking over a mess. They got no players. So it's not, let's just get the first year, let's not judge Dion. Let's go to year two.

In year two, can he win seven games and get to a lower tier bowl? If the answer is yes, isn't his son the quarterback? Then it's been a wonderful year. Let's not judge me on the first four months on the show. That's right. We haven't. But by February, dude, every word matters. All right.

And finally, things are not going well for the Chicago Bulls season. We haven't talked to any NBA really today outside the Lakers. Bulls are 12 and 18. Their stars are not getting along. There's a report in the athletic that Zach Levine and DeMarza Rosen have had multiple Multiple one-on-one sit downs as well as full team meetings to discuss what the hell's going on. When is Zach Levine ever led a team to wins? Do not be smirch the name.

I'm not, there's nothing. But he is so loved by fan boys of the NBA. Show me the wins. You want me to show you the dunk contest? Oh, congratulations on dunking. DeMarro, I take Damar DeRosen. That's one of the great dunk contests ever. DeRosen is immensely talented, dude.

I love Damar. He's limited as a three-point shooter, but he's a hard. Hard worker, been in the league, knows how to play the game. So apparently what you just said is one of the big problems. De Rosen works hard, plays both ends, passes, and Levine is more of, I got to get mine. Yep. I need my, I need my, you know, 20 shots. Highlight guy.

Watch him in a game. Nah. Highlight guy. They won a lot last year. Remember, they were like the number one or two seed in the west or east for a while. Then they go to the playoffs. They were all right. They lost.

But now it's like things are not going well. And you know it's easy to ride high with this show. When it's going smoothly, we're crushing in the numbers. Yeah. You're happy. It starts to tank. You might get a little ticked off. Zach Levine is a highlight player.

His highlights are unbelievable. Westbrook's a highlight player. But if you have Westbrook on the floor for 75 games, the analytics tell you he doesn't make people better. You have to watch the game. Some guys are great highlight players. You get him in the room. You get them in every night.

They're not good with chemistry. DeMarre de Rose, and I'd love to have on my basketball team, who'll give you an effort on both ends of the floor. I got nothing wrong with Zach Levine. I've been hearing this for seven years. How it's going to be this. You watch him, he didn't win enough. He's not making guys around him better.

He's making Zach better. You know our next guest makes everybody around him better. That's right. That was his claim to fame with the New York Tets. Absolutely. Jay Mack with the news. Well, that's the news. And thanks for stopping by.

The Hurdline News. Boy, did he get a great assignment last week? That was one of my favorite NFL game. I've never been a huge snob. no game guy, but it was just the Miami, the cold. The blizzard didn't happen until six minutes left. Mark Sanchez was on the call. Bill's Dolphins now joining us live. Yeah. There he is. Six playoff games, four and two in those. I got to tell you, you can totally disagree with this. My takeaway was that was the best loss by any team in the league. I thought Miami's game plan,

I loved their game plan. They were all over it. I mean, they had what, with about 13, plus minutes left. They get the strip sack by Phillips, the defensive end from Josh Allen. Boom, Miami's got the ball. Like, they're getting all the momentum. The crowd's starting to, getting a little uneasy. And I thought they were going to finish the game. I thought Buffalo did a great job on that final drive. I was a little confused. It was funny. I actually talked to Josh after the game, but how he didn't score with like 30 seconds or whatever left. He went with no must, which is really like when you have the lead by one, two, or three points, you don't want to give them an opportunity with time left on the clock, so you fall down,

right? When you're going into score, you're on offense, you have the lead, but it's a small lead where they can, in theory, get the ball back, kick off for sure, quickly, and then potentially onside kick and score again and beat you, meaning you won't get the ball back, essentially. So you just want to end the game. The time is more important than the points. finish the game on offense on your terms.

Well, it was either Singletary or whoever the running back was falls down. Yes. But he doesn't get the first down. He falls down and then they got like a third down. Right. You know, so it was just a little confusing because the first down marker was right near the goal line. And it's a dicey situation if you're tied.

Because if something goes wrong and you don't get the points, you could have scored and then trust your defense at least once to stop them with 30 seconds left. You know what I'm saying? So it's six one way, half a dozen the other, but it kind of gave me pause when I was on the call. Like, wait a second, what did I miss here? When you're in a stadium and you're calling a game, it's different. The game looks different.

Sure. Josh Allen in person. Have you ever seen anything quite like it? He's so special and so unique as a player. I cringe every time he gets hit, you know, because he gets hit a lot. They have designed quarterback runs, which in a game like that, you might need them. Right? If it turned into an absolute blizzard bull, then okay, let's, you know, have the ball exchange hands the least amount of times possible. So what does that mean?

Center to quarterback, that's it. Let him run. Great. Quarterback design runs. He's going to get hit. But they do it an awful lot. Third and medium. They love it. That's why they're so good on third and medium. Down inside the red zone, you know, the plus 15 plus 10 yard line, I mean, quarterback runs are at a premium down there and they dial them up. So that scares me. I think at times, I thought the defense coordinator, Coach Boyer from the Dolphins said it really well. He said one to two times a game, the ball's going to be out there. The ball's going to go through a defender's hand. Somebody's going to get a hand. You know what I'm saying? Like the ball's going to be in danger. Okay. And your defense has to capitalize on those. Teams haven't capitalized on them.

but he said two to four times a game he's going to make a play where everybody's in the right position can't do anything and you just you just watch him and it's like watching you know a cobi or a jordan or one of these guys where you're just like you know looking at everybody else like well what do you want me to do we got guys on him guarding him i don't know what to tell you we have everybody covered i don't know what to tell you running out the clock before half time with eight seconds left and no timeouts like that is you know you catch the ball once you might have time for two plays eight seconds left no timeouts, they're inside their own five-yard line trying to score, at least save time for a field goal to get the momentum because you're getting the ball in the third quarter to start

the second half. And he runs out all the clock of all of eight seconds on one play and is jumping out of bounds throwing them. I mean, like those kind of plays, you're like, dude, you can't do that. Well, you know, great shot, great throw. And I said, Mahomes completed, I think it was 20 straight throws against Houston. At the high school level, that's unheard of.

No doubt. And I feel like, I think with Mahomes, with Josh Allen, you get big risk, some mistakes. Mahomes is getting in, now he's had a few picks this year because he's got new receivers and he's learning routes and timing. But Mahomes, really to me, is, I think we're looking at something I've never seen. It would be as if Aaron Judge, you got the home runs and no strikeouts. Sure. Is the Aaron had about four years of this, Aaron Rogers, where you got all the big plays, no picks.

Right. You know, with Brady, you didn't get the spectacular, you got the efficiency and the intelligence. No doubt. It was high efficiency. How many Mahomes games have you done? Is this one of your first? This will be my first. I've actually, I've never been to Arrowhead.

as a player, as a, you know, broadcaster, never once. So I'm fired up. You're watching film now in Mahalms getting ready for this game. Just tell me. I mean, I've seen them plenty of times, but it's, what's the film say? It's all the same concepts. It's shallow cross. It's drive.

It's four verticals. It's a throwback flood. It's, you know, everything, you know, a bunch of plays. I've run in my career and I could see him going through the progressions. But then it's the Caleb Williams stuff. It's, you know, Mahomes, which makes him, instinctive. Yes. And the subtle pocket movements, the way he's able to drop his eyes from the defense,

queuing all the information he needs, abandon that for a split second, feel the rush, see the rush, then reestablish his positioning and like these reference points that have now all moved, and then his ability to snap back into it and process it so quickly, the ability to sprint, rent towards that first down and then chuck a ball, like a hook shot. We just showed this from a field level. Yeah. It's insane. He's not looking at the play.

And you forget how fast NFL players and defenders are. And he's a total point guard with feel. I don't know if it's like Jason Kidd or John Stockton or like these guy, Magic Johnson, really, because he was so smooth with it, you know. And the around the back stuff, the passes and the no look, you know, over the shoulder and all that from the Showtime Lakers. That's what it feels like when you watch the game. And then when it's on schedule and you do let them just drop back and sit there and because remember at this point last year, maybe a few weeks before this, we were saying, oh, well, you know, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers

put on tape in that Super Bowl, how to be Patrick Mahomes, get pressure with four, stay in zone coverage, and he's going to try and do too much. He's going to, you know, bring the Ringling Brothers circus into town and get too creative and too cute. And he's going to throw us a couple interceptions. We just have to you know, just pester him in the pocket, you know, frustrate him. Well, then he kind of progression past that and learned through that. And was like, okay, you're going to play me zone? Watch this. Boom, boom, boom, boom, boom.

Well, we can't pressure him because he knows what to do when we pressure him. We can't just sit back and play zone. Now we've got to mix up our calls constantly. It's got to be a rolodex. We've got to try and somehow silo him in the pocket, which is, you know, it's like trying to hurt a bunch of cats. Like, that's impossible. And it just puts so much pressure on the defense.

And the other thing, too, is like he's seen the consistency of the reps, the time on task, the same messaging from Andy Reid, from the offensive coordinator, BNami. It's all the same. They've plugged in a couple new players, but he knows the ending point of all these plays. And then he's mastered scramble drill when the play breaks down. Okay, I need somebody in front of the quarterback. I need someone trailing. If you're deep, stay deep.

if you're intermediate, make a quick move up the field and then reveal yourself to the quarterback in his throwing lane, right? And those are basic, basic scramble rules. It changes down near the goal line. But he's mastered that. And so it's just this constant rolodex now of coverages. And now he's run every play against cover one, two, three, four, five. Like, it's just he's done it all. And he has this rolladex and this recall. And then this spatial awareness to just identify, okay, where is he? Where are they? Boom. Watch this. Bam, bam, bam, bam. No look. Boom. It's incredible. Yeah.

So you've done some Philadelphia games. Quarterbacks get hurt. Yep. But it's a weird year. The guys that move, Justin's been hurt, Kyler, Lamar. Now, Stafford's hurt too. Sure. But Josh isn't hurt, but that's mostly because he's 6-6-2-60.

He did have the elbow thing. Yeah. Still, you know, they're still maintenance. Are you worried when Jalen Hertz is down, your thought is? Yeah, I mean, Minchus showed he could play. I think the team around him, I don't think he's ruled out, right? Hertz is not officially ruled out.

Some guys that run like Russell Wilson did not take hits. Russ didn't take a lot of hits. He was unique that way. Does Jaylen to you? He takes enough because of the design quarterback run stuff. Russ is more like scrambling and then getting down when everybody's kind of dropping out or in cover two man and he sees it, he catches him in it, boom, and takes off.

And everybody's kind of looking the other way and Russ takes off and slides. I feel like Jalen, with the design. stuff just like Josh. I mean, it's inevitable. The more times you tote the rock, the more times you're going to get hurt or hit at least. And then the more times you get hit, you know, it's like a transitive property thing. It's just kind of the way it works for my liking. But I've also never been a mobile quarterback like that. So it's hard to say because it seems like that, that added element to your game just causes fits on the defense. Clearly an advantage. If that's an advantage for you, you've got to play that and do your very best to limit some of those hits. But you saw, I

mean, if he's going to keep that, and, you know, my only thing for any of the zone read stuff, the thing I hated when I ran it with Chip, was the guy who did the mesh charge. So a mesh is, the mesh point is where you're handing the ball off to the halfback, right? And he intersects the ball, boom, he either takes it or you take it. The toughest thing to defend, in my opinion, or deal with as a quarterback on that is when the defensive end does not care and goes straight for your sternum and puts the, you know, the tee on his little face. mask right here right in your sternum, whether you hand it off or not. Because he could always say,

oh, I thought he had the ball. It's not a necessary roughness. I thought he kept it. Like, he has an argument there. And not everybody does it. People do it every once in while. But if you send that defensive end at the quarterback every time, I guarantee you, they'll be a little slower on the read. And they'll hand it off and kind of jump backwards because they know they're just going to get pummeled. That was always what I thought was really difficult. And then it makes you speed up the mess charge. It could cause some problems there on that exchange. You start getting the, you start like, you run last. Oh, no doubt. And you get, it's almost like getting happy feet in the pocket. You get hit in the back of your head a couple times. You know, next time you drop back,

you're kind of, you try to stay down the field, but you're, you're a little aware of what's going on. You know what I mean? All right, Mark Sanchez continues after this. if I didn't ask you, you did the Bill's Dolphins game. It did a remarkable job on my favorite games of the year. And it was funny, the weather surprise. It was actually perfect for three and a half hours. So I thought Tua did, he's capable of not screwing it up. I think compared to Josh Allen, it's like Superman and capable. Sure. Big picture, where do you think they're at?

Well, I think with Tua, this is essentially his rookie year. Okay, hang with me. I know he's had two years before this, but it was a defensive-driven. regime that didn't, in my opinion, have like an elaborate plan to develop him at certain points. Like he would play most of the game. I remember I went to a game. He played on the road at Denver and then has like one very conservative playbook. And then they bring in Fitzpatrick to go run the two minute drills as if they're like bringing in relief pitchers for the quarterback. And I just remember watching like I understand in baseball. That totally makes sense.

this guy's got a great, you know, he crushes lefties or whatever. And you have all these, you know, playoff analytics. And this is why we're bringing in pitchers and blah, blah, blah. But in the NFL, I mean, pulling guys in and out like that, it sure as heck doesn't instill confidence in your quarterback, number one. And number two, what message are you sending to the team? Like, okay, this guy can't handle two minute. He's our quarterback most of the time, but not all the time.

So I feel like those first two years, while he did get reps, I compare them to playing pickup back. basketball in the park and just running around throwing and playing and chucking up shots and kind of learning on the fly. But this is the first year he's had an offensive guy come in and believe in him and instill belief in himself. Because remember, he was God's gift to football at Alabama, then gets hurt. Then it was tank for two, a boom, he's back, you know, sky high. Then it's, he's a bust for a couple years. And then now this is the first time it's been better because he's had weapons and someone who's put him in good positions. But he's managing these peaks and valleys

as a quarterback. And it went from, right, tank for two, a bust, pro bowl top vote getter to, you know, he's a bust again. They lost two in a row. You know, they win five in a row. He's the best. MVP candidate. Oh, nope, he sucks again. So he's trying to get a handle on that for the first time. and he's got to be careful not to overown some of the mistakes of other players, of poor play selection, of whatever, because then it can paralyze his ability to play. And so he's finally starting to understand some of those things. So I feel like this is more of his rookie year than the last couple. Zach Wilson, bit of a cowboy for my taste.

You've been in that chair. Where are you with him now? Year two, December. Yeah, they're either, who do they have this week? Sorry. The Jets. Mack knows. Oh, yeah, tomorrow right. Short week, yeah. Yeah, that's a handful.

So, listen, short weeks, what do you love? What do you know really well? What do you complete the most? Go back to some of your percentages on different concepts and what works versus the scheme you're going to play. Get comfortable with the game plan immediately because it's mostly walkthroughs. Yeah. For Zach, I think coming back last week, it's not like he lost the game for him. he played plenty well. I don't know if Mike White was healthy enough,

if they'd throw him out there again, but these two weeks are a really good sample size of showing like, okay, can he operate the same as Mike White? Has he learned from the podium experience? It sounds like he has. But just because of the market, right? And just because of where he's at circumstantially, you know, having to come back from everything he's,

he's in some ways put himself into because of his lack of acknowledgement and ownership. Some Baker-Mayfield stuff there. Yeah, like poor quarterback play and the immaturity at the podium kind of stuff. Like that, that is almost worse than what he's done on the field. And on the field wasn't great, but you're like waiting for this improvement, waiting to show like that next step. Yes, I can handle it. Yes, I'm, you know, mature enough to handle this stuff. And it hasn't totally come out.

So that's the toughest market to try and come back in. I mean, trust me, I know I've been there. Like my guy Jacoby Myers, my heart breaks for the guy. Like, I know about embarrassing plays, and it sucks. I don't think his is going to be nearly, have nearly the legs of mine because it wasn't on Thanksgiving. It wasn't a rival game. It was a random.

Yeah, it was like a random Saturday and hashtags have been a thing for a long time. It didn't just like suddenly show up. So he's going to be fine. But Zach and that market is just, ah, it's just, it's going to be so hard. hard to bring it all the way back. And unless he just goes out and lights it up, good play will cover up a lot of words, right? If you're really good, you get a lot of leeway. So until that happens, I don't know. And I don't think they would, you know, we said we're not going to write his obituary yet. But he's going to have to most likely compete this next year unless he just

kicks butt right now, takes him into the playoffs and establishes himself as the guy. But that's, you You know, that's saying a lot. And that's a tough, tough deal to accomplish. You were a professional athlete for 10 years, so explain to me, do you think it was a coaching call, a player ad-libbing with Jacobi Myers? You tell me, you're on that sidling.

You've been there. Because it's tied, right? The game was tied. It felt like a knee and get to overtime. It felt like let's get to overtime. Well, if we're going to overtime, fine. either throw the Hellmerry or take a knee and play for the next quarter essentially.

And the run becomes a 25-yard game. Now all of a sudden in real time, you're like- So I think that's what happened to Stevenson, right? He was like, oh, my God, we could win this. 30-yard gain. Try and make a play. So he makes a play, and then it just kind of like snowballs. And then Jacoby Myers thinks like, oh, we're making plays.

Like, let's roll. And so he catches it, right? After Stevenson pitches it to him and he's like, oh, shoot, here we go. And, you know, he owned it right after the game. I thought that was one of the most mature things of a player. What did he say? He just said, I was trying to do too much, bottom line. Like, I shouldn't have done that.

No, that wasn't the call. It was on me. And completely owned it at his locker. So I applaud him for that. And that, I mean, it's just a bonehead, knucklehead play, dude. I've been there. The sun's going to come up tomorrow. You're going to be just fine.

You know, it happened in Las Vegas on the road on a random Saturday late in the season. Once again, it's not Thanksgiving. not everybody's sitting at home watching this one massive game. But your first thought was your heart broke for the player. Yeah, because you just, I mean, it just sucks. You're just like, oh, you know, he works just as hard as everybody else. You know, he practices, he puts in the, you know, he's putting in the time. He cares about it.

He knows he studies the situations like he's in. That was, I guess, the most shocking thing is because Coach Belichick is essentially one of the masters of those kind of end of game, end of half situation. and situational football is their baby. Like, that's what they do. The best. Exactly. And so I just remember the heightened sense of awareness

when we play the Patriots of having to match that or surpass their knowledge and mastery of those situations. So that, I think that was the most shocking. But, you know, listen, people make mistakes.
