Starting point is 00:02:36 the Heisman trophy winner Mike McCarthy just had a very emotional press conference he got you know they say you can't go home again it looked like he was a very happy guy so let's talk to
Starting point is 00:02:46 it's official today Joe Brady now I think he may be the youngest coach in the league with Josh Allen he's not the hot coach on the market he doesn't have a huge resume he's in the building So it's interesting.
Starting point is 00:03:01 Both the Steelers and the bills hired somebody they were comfortable with. That does know what's make the best coach. So let's start with Brady in Buffalo. What is your take on that? Yeah, Colin, I think when you look at Joe Brady in Buffalo, the bills are admitting to us in real time that they don't think that the issue is physical there. They think it's psychological. So they wanted to bring in someone with a new voice,
Starting point is 00:03:26 but also give Josh Allen the stable ecosystem around the offense that he has been running and has found extreme success in. You look at Brady, you look at Peyton Manning, you look at Drew Breeze, all the greats in this game. They consistently have the same offense for 10, 15, 20 years. And I think Josh Allen just has to not play his worst game in the biggest game of the year. And the Buffalo Bills can continue to eliminate the self-inflicted wounds. build a better defense around him, and get some offensive weapons to help him go and really achieve the dream of winning a Super Bowl.
Starting point is 00:04:03 But there's a trend right now in the NFL hiring cycle, and you're spot on. It's more about comfortability and less about just all the crazy offensive minds that are going to drop all the crazy great plays and have your locker room falling apart. So McCarthy, listen, Pittsburgh fans didn't love the news, but after he cries at the press conference, very emotional, it'll probably, I mean, let's be honest,
Starting point is 00:04:26 for the next 48 hours, people are going to be on the Mike McCarthy train in Pittsburgh. He loves the city, and I totally get it. It's when somebody loves you, you love them back. That's the reality. How do you feel about the move? Yeah, I mean, I'm with the fans before the press conference. Hiring Mike McCarthy is to me just about making sure that the Steelers don't bottom out. You're coming off of Mike Tomlin who had 19 straight years without a losing record,
Starting point is 00:04:52 losing season, should I say. So Mike McCarthy, at a minimum. should be able to continue that trend. But it doesn't scream to the fan base or really to the locker room. Hey, we're here to win a Super Bowl right now. It does feel like the Steelers are 100% fine with just winning enough games, staying relevant. Because Mike Tomlin, when he walks out the door, you kind of feel like that Steeler identity walks out the door with him.
Starting point is 00:05:23 Yeah. That was the biggest issue I had with Mike McCormland. McCarthy in Dallas. They just didn't have an identity or their identity was what it's always been with Jerry Jones. So he didn't make a difference there. I'm happy for him that he's excited to be home. But I don't think it's a move that makes the fan base just get invigorated with a ton of energy. All right.
Starting point is 00:05:46 We have some McCarthy sound, Robert. We'll play the sound we have on McCarthy. Oftentimes, coaches and players, you know, you put on new team color. and it takes a minute to feel comfortable in those new colors. But to be blessed beyond any measure one day to put on the colors you wore since you brought home, I apologize. I understand and embrace the responsibility of privilege and the weight that comes with this stewardship. This city, this franchise, this fan base means the world to me.
Starting point is 00:06:23 Because Pittsburgh is my world and Dodds, it's just awesome to be back. It's just awesome to be back here. That's about as emotional as you get for a head coach, is it not? So, I mean, again, I think that outpouring of emotion endears into the city, and it's kind of like, let's ride. But I think I feel kind of the same way as, I will say this, could I argue this? The best thing about McCarthy, this organization has been leaning defense since the 70s.
Starting point is 00:06:51 And it's like finally McCarthy, I mean, Robert, it's ridiculous. They've led the NFL in defense of spending for a straight years. Could I argue McCarthy will at least pivot the organization to spending more money on offense? Yeah, Colin, I agree with you. I think you will. And when you listen to that sound, it's like, man, it's really hard to hate the move. Right. But I still understand the lack of excitement around it.
Starting point is 00:07:18 But there's one thing that McCarthy is going to do, and that is they're going to put up points. They're going to be a top 10 offense. They're going to spend money in that regard. And I think the biggest question you have to ask, which everyone's already asking, what is Aaron Rogers going to do? This is a guy that many might say kind of got McCarthy out of Green Bay. Yeah. So would he decide to stay another year to stay in Pittsburgh with his old coach to give it one more hurrah?
Starting point is 00:07:45 Otherwise, you're working with Will Howard. And as you said, a somewhat weak quarterback class this year in the draft. So it's a difficult situation for Mike. But they do, you know, you got DK.K. Metcalf there. They've got some weapons that they can, you know, really get the ball around on offense. But if you don't have a quarterback, it doesn't matter. Be sure to catch live editions of the herd weekdays in noon Eastern, 9 a.m. Pacific. Hey, it's Ben.

Hey, it's us, the Jonas brothers, and guess what? We have some big news. What's the news? Huge news. We created our own podcast called, Hey Jonas. We invented a
Starting point is 00:08:48 podcast? Well, we didn't invent it. We just contributed to it. We're the first people to do podcasts. Pretty, yeah, a pretty wide range of podcasts throughout there.
Starting point is 00:08:56 But this one's extra special. So how did we how do we actually come up with a name Hey Jonas, guys? I honestly don't remember.
Starting point is 00:09:03 I think it was on a call about what we should call it and, well, we were thinking I'm originally calling it one of the early names of our band
Starting point is 00:09:12 before Jonas Brothers was, this is how you guys remember it going down? Yes. I have a very different memory of this. We were talking about a thing,
Starting point is 00:09:20 a bit for the podcast where people could call in and say, hey Jonas, and then I wrote down on my little notepad, Hey Jonas, and offered it up as a potential title for the podcast. But thanks for remembering that, guys. Listen to Hey Jonas on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcast. Just listen. We don't care where you hear it. Starting point is 00:10:20 breaking down everything happening at Rolling Geras, every match, every upset, and what it really takes to win on Clay. Jen she went. I mean, she went down to three to Rabakina, but I'm delighted. She's an outsider to win the French for me. And she likes Clay. Listen, Lena Rubakina is arguably the best player in the world right now, and I actually can win on any surface.
Starting point is 00:10:41 Because if she's serving, well, good luck. Consider this your court side seat to the French Open. Listen to the Renee Stubbs Tennis podcast on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcast. or wherever you get your podcasts. Presented by Capital One, founding partner of I Heart Women's Sports. And for more, follow Timbo SlicLife 12 in the TikTok podcast network on TikTok. Well, as a former quarterback, I want to ask you about Sean Payton going forward on fourth and one,
Starting point is 00:11:55 and I want to ask you about Sean McVeigh doing the same. The analytics said Sean should have kicked a field goal, but it wasn't like 90-10. It was kind of close. And the analytics said McVeigh should have gone for he did, but it was like 48% win percentage to 38. So again, I tend to be like offensive coaches, they want, they've got their play calls, and they're like, they trust their guys. it's easier to trust Stafford than Jared Stidham. Did either one of those bother you or were you okay with both?
Starting point is 00:12:26 I think they both bothered me, Colin. And I'm pro fourth down. I'm just anti-ego. And right now, the problem isn't like coaches going forward on fourth down. I think it's the discourse around going forward on fourth down is almost looked at like a personality trait. If you don't go forward on fourth down, then you got some in you.
Starting point is 00:12:49 Yeah. There's an old phrase, Colin, of like, Mama ain't raised no, right? Everyone knows how to finish that phrase. But this is not the time to sing it, in my opinion. When you're in games, like the AFC championship and the NFC championship, which are routinely decided by one score, you have to take the points. Take the points. It's all about momentum. I know there's some people that believe momentum is a myth. I don't. I know if I'm on a drive and we're up 7-0 and we kick a field goal to go up 10 to 0. My defense is feeling better. My coordinator's feeling better about what he's calling. And the fans and the stands are also getting more into the game because now we have a two-score lead. So I look at Sean Payton's decision and it just felt like it's premature. Don't make a decision because you're worried about what's going to happen two quarters later. I know the analytics on his said to kick the field goal. And then for Sean McVeigh, I know Sean, like Sean was my coordinator in Washington.
Starting point is 00:13:47 And his mindset is he would rather, you know, die on the sword going for it than to kick a field goal and hope that his defense is going to get him the ball back. But they went for it, didn't get it, and then got the ball back with 25 seconds. Now, imagine if they kicked that field goal, they still get the ball back with 25 seconds, and all they need is a field goal to win the game. Well, the other thing is, you know, the air thing, Robert, is Stafford had struggled on, like, third down. He was 0 for 6 in the game. So they had moved the ball well, but a lot of it was first and second down play calling.
Starting point is 00:14:23 They picked up a lot of first downs. You know, again, I love Peyton and McVeigh, but I also said this. It's fourth and one in Denver with a great old one. And it's a home game. In Seattle, it's fourth and four. You're not only on the road. Seattle, their defensive lines better than your own line. The everything is it's not fourth and one, it's fourth and four.
Starting point is 00:14:46 And to be in the end zone in Seattle, you cannot hear yourself think in the end zone. So, you know, it's tough. Okay, I want to end with this. Listen, I have a long history with Sam Darnold and believing in him. Okay. But that said, I think he gets an, I think he gets, there's a reasonable opinion. And I always felt this with Andrew Luck. They're both a little reckless.
Starting point is 00:15:14 but I also think Peyton Manning through picks and Eli Manning through picks and Matt Stafford through picks. Right? Oh, yeah. I mean, really, Mahomes and Aaron Rogers are rare. You get the upside with very few picks. That's very rare. Right. Right.
Starting point is 00:15:27 Before Sam's resurgence, how did you view it? It's easy now to say I always knew. Before that game with the Rams, did you think he would have the game of his career? I did not think that Sam Donner was going to play the way he played against him. the Rams. I don't think anyone thought that. And if they did, they're lying to you. Now, I also didn't think that he was going to bottom out, Colin. I think what we realized last year with
Starting point is 00:15:56 Sam Donald was if you put him in a situation where he has weapons around him, a really good defense, a strong offensive line, he can make every throw you can possibly imagine. And the under talked about thing with Sam Donald is his ability to make off-schedule plays. Yeah. Like, he can run, he can throw on the run. He's a dynamic athlete. And I think that's why he's been able to have the resurgence that he has. It's obviously his confidence, right? That's a big difference maker. His decision making in these last two playoff games where he was turnover free was massive for Seattle. And he's got the number one scoring defense in the NFL. All right. When he was with the Jets, 2019, I think he went seven and six as a starter. They had the 16th ring defense. So the way I look at
Starting point is 00:16:41 Sam Donald is when you have a guy that has elite traits, I've heard. I've heard you talk about this before with Sam. When you watch him throw the football, it just looks different. Yeah. He has elite traits. So now if you put a guy with elite traits who has mobility and he's got weapons around him, Jackson Smith and Jigba is the best receiver in the NFL right now. He is, I mean, he literally never slows down into break, out of break,
Starting point is 00:17:05 during break, same speed. The car never shifts down, ever. So you put these guys around him and then the defense that they have, you know, Tarique Woolen had the mistake in the game, but then came back and they shut down Puka and Devante Adams there at the end of the game when the Rams needed them the most. Like, this is the recipe for a Seahawks team to win the Super Bowl because Sam Donald can do that. And as long as he protects the football and they protect him up front, I mean, it's hard to pick against the Seahawks. Robert, great senior as always.
Starting point is 00:17:38 My man, great work. Appreciate you, brother. God bless. All right. He's been great for us. RG3 Robert Griffin, the third, host of Out of Pocket with RG3 is his podcast. So Mike McCarthy, very emotional, got a dream job. And when you get those kind of, not many people in life get their dream job.
Starting point is 00:17:56 So I think McCarthy's hiring, well, there was a real pushback in Pittsburgh, media and fans. My take is today that was such an emotional press conference. Everybody today in Pittsburgh is going to be like, hey, let's ride with it. He's our guy. He's a Pittsburgh guy. And Pittsburgh loves Pittsburgh. You know what I mean? They lean into Pittsburgh.
Starting point is 00:18:16 It's the herd. Starting point is 00:21:37 in the TikTok podcast network on TikTok. So Mike McCarthy, very emotional presser today in Pittsburgh. Then there was the inevitable question about the quarterback position and somebody he once coached that ended very poorly Aaron Rogers and not sure Mike quite knew what to say. I'm not asking this from any other perspective except your own personal preference. In your best case scenario, do you want Aaron Rogers back as your quarterback next year? That's nice the way he asked that, right?
Starting point is 00:22:14 That was slick. I mean, definitely. I mean, obviously, while you wouldn't. But, you know, I think just like anything, you know, knowing Aaron long enough going through seasons, you know, I think when players, you know, to see Mel Blunt here, I mean, when guys are up at that stage of the career, they need to step away and decompress it.
Starting point is 00:22:33 I think that's very important. And I have spoken to Aaron. And so that's really where, you know, that's really where we are there. Yeah, I don't think that's an easy situation. Don't burn bridges. Everything circles back. I think for a year, you know, you kind of heal that wound maybe for a year.
Starting point is 00:22:54 McCarthy and Aaron kind of sold that thing up a little bit. I think Aaron's the best quarterback available on the market. If they reach for Ty Simpson, who, depending on the front office you talk to, Ty Simpson, I mean, they already reach for a first round pick and Kenny Pickett, that didn't work at all. So if I could do Aaron Rogers for one more year and kind of shift the tone and the personnel get a little younger on defense, start spending more money on offense.
Starting point is 00:23:22 But I mean, to me, and I don't know what that relationship is, now Aaron has said publicly and Mike has said publicly last year, it's fine, water under the bridge, it's no big deal. So if they're being forthright and honest, I, for a year, I'd do it. I thought Aaron played really well. I've said before. I thought he was
Starting point is 00:23:42 comeback player of the year. I'd have no problem signing Aaron to a two-year deal, give him a little more money this year, second year of the deal, give the Steelers a little and Aaron some wiggle room to get out of it, but I have no problem with it.
Starting point is 00:23:58 Again, this is not a quarterback market with six guys. It's one star in Fernando Mendoza, Ty Simpson, and right now today, Aaron Rogers, is a lot better than Ty Simpson's rookie year. I mean, that, that, That, I go back and look at the numbers.
Starting point is 00:24:12 Aaron played really well considering down the stretch that didn't have D.K. Metcalf for a couple of key games. So I think it works, at least for a year. Why not? J. Mack with the news. No, no, no, no, no. Turn on the news. This is the herd line news. Big news of the day is Joe Brady. The OC and Buffalo is going to be taken over as the head coach.
Starting point is 00:24:36 Buffalo fans seem positive on the hire. I don't think it's a splashy one. He's 36 years old, which is crazy. I mean, Colin, where were you at 36? Were you in Tampa at 36? I know I was just goofing around on the internet, starting a website. I can't believe being an NFL head coach. We'll see how it goes in Buffalo for Joe Brady.
Starting point is 00:24:57 Well, he's done some college. He's done some pro. He knows the organization. You know, Josh Allen probably had to say, listen, if you're Josh Allen. He was sitting in on interviews. Yeah, him and Lamar are going to definitely have said. Well, I think if you're, I mean, let's look at it fairly through Josh Allen's eyes. Josh Allen's had great years with Joe Brady.
Starting point is 00:25:17 So, and Josh Allen's probably thinking he won't mess with the offense. I mean, the only thing Josh Allen's missing, he'll be a Hall of Famer. He's rich beyond his wildest dreams. The only thing he doesn't have is a ring. Well, there's no guarantee you'd get a ring with Jesse Mentor. There's no guarantee you'd get a ring with John Harba. There's no guarantees that Stefanski would get you a ring. So Josh Allen's like, well, if there's no guarantee, I'm not getting Sean Payton as a head coach.
Starting point is 00:25:43 I'm not getting Andy Reid in his prime. I'm not getting Sean McVeigh. So if I'm not getting that, Josh Allen's like, well, I'm familiar with this guy. I don't have to learn a new offense. So I get Josh, and I think Josh Allen did have a say. I don't know if it was the final say, but he had a say. And again, if you're not giving me Sean McVey or Kyle Shanahan or Andy Reid or Sean Peyton, well, then give me comfort.
Starting point is 00:26:09 I mean, you don't know if he's, Jesse Minter may have come to Buffalo or Kevin Stefansky and, you know, an inch better than Joe Brady or not. So I get the star player saying, listen, I've checked almost every box except one, and I think the chances of getting there with this guy are not any worse than anybody else that was currently on the market. I mean, John Harbaugh is a guaranteed success in New York.
Starting point is 00:26:34 Tell me, I think Jesse Minter, will work in Baltimore. There's no guarantees with any of these other hires, really. All right, let's move to Mike McDaniel. He has officially been hired as the Chargers offensive coordinator. I think it's the best hire of the offseason. Interestingly, Jim Harbaugh hired him, which everybody thinks it's a smart move. McDaniel was then introduced at his press conference, Colin, this has an SNL-skit feel to it.
Starting point is 00:27:02 Here we go. All right, what's up? Not really an opening statement guy, but I will open with this statement. I'm fired up to be here. Family's fired up to be here and shoot from the hip with whatever questions you got. I think so confident. He's got the puffy jacket out here in L.A. Come on, though.
Starting point is 00:27:25 He and Harbar are different cats, totally. But so what? I mean, listen, remember when Sean McVeigh hired Wade Phillips for a year? Totally different guys? I don't think that. I mean, you got Ben Johnson. is a young hot shot. You got Dennis Allen's
Starting point is 00:27:40 defensive coordinator who got fired twice as a head coach. He's kind of limping around the league and he puts his arm around him and says, you know what?
Starting point is 00:27:46 Dennis has been around the league. He knows it. So I don't really have a problem going out and getting a personality opposite of you.
Starting point is 00:27:54 I mean, the culture is created by the head coach. I like young, smart, offensive coordinators, risk takers. And I think you and I both agree.
Starting point is 00:28:03 You can say what you want about Mike McDaniel's a head coach. He made two of a pro boulder, got to the playoffs twice in the AFC when Mahomes, Lamar and Burrow and all these guys were in their prime, Mike McDaniel is an offensive coordinator
Starting point is 00:28:15 and I agree with you. That is the one guarantee and two guarantees in the coaching cycle. Harbaugh is going to make the Giants better and Mike McDaniel is going to work absolutely with Justin Herbert. Those two things I absolutely believe are true. Yeah, this is going to be a home run.
Starting point is 00:28:34 It's early, obviously. Offseason, I'm starting to dig into the Chargers. They're in good shape this off season, okay? And they get their bookend tackles back. You're looking for an AFC winner next year? I think Chargers definitely top three roster, quarterback, coaching staff.
Starting point is 00:28:49 Just got to stay healthy. And they should be right there in the AFC championship next year. I like a lot about this team. Final story, let's talk about the Lakers. You got them up close and personal last night in Shaitown. Luca was cooking. Ruihachi Moro, by the way, was awesome. 9 of 11, 23
Starting point is 00:29:05 points. But Luca was just masterful. Listen, man, I know everybody loves him some SGA, but Luca Donchich, I mean, come on. With Yokic out, Luca's the best player in the league, it's not close. He makes everybody around him better. He's the best offensive player in the league. Oh, that's, no question. I mean,
Starting point is 00:29:20 the stepback threes, he had eight threes last night. And it looks like he's doing it in slow motion, and yet nobody can stop him. I'm such a fan. What are the, what's the net rating on the Bulls defense? Because Chicago. Don't have that, don't have that handy right now, Colin. In the first half?
Starting point is 00:29:37 The first quarter to half, the Bulls barely had a pulse defensively. So a lot of those threes were like practice threes. See, the problem with the Bulls is they continually are in the middle, right? So they're never drafting top five. And if you don't draft top five, you're not getting a superstar unless you nail a Yokic or one of these guys. You know, people always talk about the advantages that the NFL has over the NBA. There are fewer games, so the games mean more. Do you know the biggest advantage the NFL has over the NBA?
Starting point is 00:30:10 Is that in the NFL, you can go from awful to the Super Bowl, Patriots, for another example. Because you get 7 to 8 to 9 to 10 players in the draft. Many are grown men ready to contribute because you have to stay in college minimum three years. So, I mean, the Patriots this year have like five rookies who are huge. I mean, the Seahawks are the second youngest team in the league. They have a bunch of kids. in the NBA, you get like two picks. One's a second rounder who at best is at the end of your bench.
Starting point is 00:30:42 And maybe let's say even if you're a bad team and get the fifth pick, he's a good player, but he's one year in college. He's 19, 20 years old. He's not close to changing outcomes of games. So even Wembe came into the league. We're like, best prospect ever. Game restrictions, minute restrictions. got injured.
Starting point is 00:31:05 Chet Holmgren. Great player. Minute restrictions, got banged up. So the advantage the NFL has over the NBA, when you're bad in the NBA, you're limited on the trades you can make. Salaries have to match up. When you're bad in the end,
Starting point is 00:31:21 how long of the Wizards been bad? Forever. Forever. The commanders were bad. They get a new owner. The next year, they're in the conference championship. You can't do that in the NBA. the NFL is a league of hope and the NBA feels like a league of hopeless for teams like Chicago.
Starting point is 00:31:40 Yeah. If you get a top elite, look at all the best teams are built, right? Through the draft. Look at what the Spurs did quickly. Drafting Wembe, drafting Kassel. Think about this. Yolkits, Jamal Murray, all the best teams. I know the Lakers are unique because they trade for Shaq.
Starting point is 00:31:53 The Spurs, since drafting Wembe, 40 games under 500. Well, he missed a lot of time with the blood clots. I know they did trade for Deerrin Fox, but the Celtics, Tatum and Brown, through the draft. You look at the Pacers, Halliburton, through the draft. You've got to nail that top 10 pick, just like you've got to nail a quarterback in the NFL. Jay Mack with the news. Well, that's the news. And thanks for stopping by.
Starting point is 00:32:21 The Hurd-Ly News. Yeah, it is interesting, though, watching LeBron last night. I had said this at the top of the hour. He came out and played a really good first quarter, first half. half really good. And it reminds me of Tom Brady. Tom Brady didn't retire because he couldn't play. Tom Brady probably was tired of the off-season's. And, you know, it's grueling the practice, the intensity. You don't have much of a life outside of about three weeks in the off-season, maybe six weeks. You know, Aaron Rogers goes and hides. That's fine. That's not really Brady's
Starting point is 00:32:53 personality. He's a grinder as a broadcaster as a player. So you have to really commit to the off-season. And with LeBron, it's not about LeBron, not loving basketball, or not being what are his numbers this year watching him last night in the first half now he can't do it for 40 minutes anymore but when lebron he's in chicago lebron knows new york chicago you know the last time chicagoes
Starting point is 00:33:14 gets to see him it's a sold out game lebron knows he can put on a little bit of a show he was the best player along with luke on the floor and he still got his body he can still bully his way to 20 points a game he's still a brilliant passer and great ball handler so just watching him play last night it's like lebron could get 20 for another four years because he is so physically
Starting point is 00:33:34 strong and the league is young and frankly it's young and skinny and LeBron's just so physically powerful that I watched them last time my guys in his 40s LeBron and four years from now could give you 18 points he couldn't give you 40 minutes he could get you
Starting point is 00:33:50 18 points so LeBron right now is averaging 22 6 and 6 one of the five players in the league averaging those numbers 20 points in the first half last night. And one of the best dunks he's had in the last couple of years.
Starting point is 00:34:07 So, you know, you sit and watch him and you're like, I mean, he's still, there's so many young, the NBA now has got so many young players and so many players that just can't physically match out with LeBron. And he still beats guys off the dribble. It's very much Brady. Brady retired because of personal stuff. LeBron may just retire because, like, the, you know, Lakers have new owners. They're not going to give him a big extension.
Starting point is 00:34:28 But Brady could have been a top six quarterback two years. years ago. And LeBron is still bullying his way to 20 point halves. Bulls aren't very good defensively, but you get the point. Nick Wright, RG3 stopped by, Mike McCarthy. Listen, when people cry at a press
Starting point is 00:34:46 conference, you know, it's hard not to root for him. So, if Aaron Rogers comes back, I'll say it right now. They'll win 10 games. They're not going to win any playoff games. Kansas City's going to get Mahomes some help and I think a really interesting story is what's Lamar going to do? Lamar wants to be the highest paid quarterback.
Starting point is 00:35:07 Good luck. Not saying he doesn't deserve it. Stafford's going to want more money. Good luck. You're going to have to move off some of these really, really high-end Rams players. See you tomorrow. Hey guys, it's us.
