This is an I-Heart podcast.
Guaranteed Human.
Hey, guys, it's us.
The Jonas Brothers. I'm Joe.
I'm Kevin.
And I'm Nick.
And guess what?
We created our own podcast called, Hey, Jonas.
We invented a podcast?
Well, we didn't invent it.
We just contributed to it.
We're the first people to do podcasts.
We get to ask other people questions because we're sick and tired of being asked questions.
Well, sick and tired is a strong way to put it.
But, you know, tired and sick.
Tired and sick.
Listen to Hey Jonas on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you.
you get your podcast.
Just listen.
We don't care where you hear it.
Another podcast from some SNL, late-night comedy guy, not quite.
Unhumor me with Robert Smygel and Friends.
Me and hilarious guests from Bob Odenkirk to David Letterman help make you funnier.
This week, my guest, SNL's Mikey Day and head writer, Streeter Seidel, help an
a cappella band with their between songs banter.
Where does your group perform?
We do some retirement homes.
Those people are starving for banter.
Listen to humor me with Robert Smigel and Friends on the ice.
Heart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.
Winning on Clay is an art.
The rallies are relentless.
And at the French Open, only the toughest survive.
I'd know.
I competed there for decades.
Join me, Renee Stubbs, on the Renee Stubbs tennis podcast for no nonsense breakdowns of the
biggest matches, the toughest players, and the moments that define Roland Garris.
She can win.
She's an outsider to win the French fame.
And she likes Clay.
Listen, Lina Rubakina is arguably the best player in the world right now.
And I actually can win on any service.
Listen to the Renee Stubbs tennis podcasts on the Iheart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.

Last night, a blown call changed a game.
This morning, the internet lost its mind, and nobody's telling you exactly what happened.
That's where Sports Slice comes in.
I'm Timbo, and every episode, we're cutting through the noise, breaking down the biggest moments in sports and giving you the real story behind the headline.
and we're going straight to the source, the athletes themselves.
Their locker room stories, their reactions in the moment,
and the stuff nobody gets to hear.
Listen to SportsSlice on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts,
or wherever you get your podcast.
And for more, follow Timbo Sliced Life 12
in the TikTok podcast network on TikTok.
Imagine an Olympics where doping is not only legal, but encouraged.
It's the enhanced games.
Some call it grotesque.
Others say it's unleashing human potential.
Either way, the podcast's superhuman.
Human documented it all, embedded in the games and with the athletes for a full year.
Within probably 10 days, I'd put on 10 pounds.
I was having trouble stopping the muscle growth.
Listen to Superhuman on the IHard Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.
Thanks for listening to The Herd podcast.
Be sure to catch us live every weekday on Fox Sports Radio in noon to 3 Eastern, 9 a.m.
to noon Pacific.

or stream us live every day in the IHeart Radio app by searching Fox Sports Radio or FSR.
You're listening to Fox Sports Radio.
All right, back here on the herd.
Longtime listeners know that I geek out about March Madness.
I just, I'm the kind of nerd who would record on a VHS one shining moment and then play it back
in the days afterward.
This was like back in the day before YouTube was everything.
And my girlfriend, now wife, would just mock.
me. Like, why do you like this song so much?
And it's guys like Casey Jacobson
that make me love it. Let's welcome in Fox
College basketball analyst, Casey Jacobson,
who was on some damn good Stanford
teams, first team All-American with the Collins
Twins. Casey, are you as excited
for this month as I am?
I am just as much. Maybe more
of a nerd than you are. I got my
glasses ready. You mentioned the One Shiny
Moment thing, J-Mack? Like, honestly,
I was so excited to be on One Shiny
Moment twice. I was like, I can find it on YouTube
if you want to. I'm now.
Like a half of a second in two different years.
And that is to me like a big thing.
It's like, okay, I know I'm actually a good basketball player if I'm on one-tending
moments.
So did you, was that when you had the frosted tips?
I feel like you had those.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Oh, yeah.
Frosted tips made a comeback the last couple of years too, Jay, man.
All right.
Obviously, you were just in the garden for the Big East tournament.
St. John's, impressive.
It riddle me this, Casey.
St. John's wins the Big East, wins a big East tournament.
And it gets a much lower seed than Yukon.
Like, what the hell's going on there?
Well, St. John's fans know what I'm about to say.
They went 0 and 4 against ranked teams in the non-conference.
And this was the St. John's teams that preseason was ranked fifth in the country, right?
Rick Petino, they bring back Zubi, Edgaport.
It's had a fantastic year, by the way.
Shout out to Zubi.
Total Stud.
They brought in one of the top transfer classes in the country, JMAX.
So everybody was riding high.
Like, what's Rick Petino going to do with all these new shiny pieces?
And it was a slow burn.
Like they just weren't tied together in the first couple months of the season.
Now they got their act together.
Of course, they win their second outright regular season championship in the Big East,
including splitting games with Yukon.
So they did kind of write the ship a little bit.
But with only two total ranked wins on the season, that's why they are a five-line.
Now, it looks like they're out in San Diego.
That is not a fun trip for the Johnny's.
Also having to travel a little bit is Yukon down to Philadelphia.
Your thoughts on Yukon, I don't know.
I'm seeing some Final Four sneakiness out of them,
but I also can see boom-bust.
Like they could lose maybe in the second round.
Furman will not be easy, I don't think, in the first one.
No, Furman won't be easy, but I do have them moving on
in a potential second-round matchup with UCLA.
And in my own personal bracket, I don't know if Danny Hurley's watching this.
If he is, he's going to show it to all his guys and use it as motivation,
J-Mack, our conversation about Yukon.
But I do have them losing in the second round.
You know, their last, I believe it's their last 11 games.
They are, I believe it's 7 and 4 in their last.
They have not closed the season as well as they want to,
including losing at home to a Creighton team that's been struggled all season.
They lost at Marquette.
Marquette, you know, was really bad for Marquette standards this year.
So like the end of the year, you're like wondering,
all right, is this team hitting their stride or are they kind of, you know,
maybe crating a little bit.
Terrace Reed Jr. is their centerpiece down low.
My favorite version of Yukon, J-Mack, is when they play through him,
get him some post touches because they're perimeter guys who like to shoot.
Ray La Mellon's freshman three-point shooter, Alex Caraband,
been around college basketball forever,
and the most winning Yukon player in the history of their program, solo ball.
Those guys like to shoot, but they have been wildly inconsistent.
Their back court just has not been solid.
Silas Demerre Jr., their point guard, J-Mack,
I think you know this.
He left the championship game early against St. John's.
We believe he will be healthy to come back, but just keep an eye on that.
He's very important to what they do.
It's just when you compare Yukon to what they were in the non-conference,
what we expect them to be, they didn't finish the season amongst the best top eight or ten teams in the country.
Totally agree.
I guess it's just the championship DNA, right?
And last year they pushed Florida.
Hell, they nearly beat Florida, which was even.
champs. Speaking of injuries, let's go to Duke, Casey. Obviously, losing Caleb Foster,
big blow, point guard, more a steadying force than a superstar. I saw him out here in his senior
year in high school. That guy's a good player. I mean, the fact that he's only averaging like eight
points is crazy. But now Boozer's brother steps into that role. He showed well at the ACC tournament,
but it's the center that leaves a lot to be desired. I mean, down two starters, I don't think
they're final four material, but sounds like he might be back. Yeah, you're talking about Patrick
Gengba, who's a double-digit score for them and a really good shot block or rim protector.
And when you combine him with Camboos or down low, Jemak, Duke's defense was, if not the best,
the second best behind Michigan.
Those are the two best defensive teams I've seen all year.
Maybe throw Arizona in that mix as well.
It's really hard to score at the rim against Duke.
So hopefully they will have Gengba back in the lineup.
You mentioned Caleb Foster.
Like, you need backcourt players, right, to perform.
form. You need them to handle the ball.
Cam Boozer can't do it all on his
own, although sometimes it feels like he
does do it all on his own. You mentioned
Cady Boozer, back-to-back
16-point performances for
Caden Boozer in the
ACC tournament semifinals
and the championship game. That's
big time. So when I was filling out my
bracket, I was like, yeah, right, is Duke
good, like, can Can Can
Boozer really just take this team on his shoulders and
drag them to a final
four, even missing
a starter or not being completely healthy. And the answer is,
Jemak, I cannot doubt this young man. Camboozer is the real
deal. I was watching your show today. You were talking about him
and comparing him to Yokic. That's a little bit crazy, but
you know, but Jamek, you're a little bit crazy is one of the reasons why I love you
so much and why I'm having conversations with you. Camboozer is a winner.
And I know that's sometimes a cop-out. A lot of people we, we, we, um,
people as winners when they don't have stats.
Like, this guy's just a winner. Don't look at his numbers.
Camp Boozer has stats and he's a winner.
Two-time national player of the year in high school,
four-time state championship player
out of the state of Florida, three-time
AAU national championship player at the Nike level.
He's won a gold medal at USA.
I mean, did I go on?
If you want to doubt him
in this field, go ahead and do it at your own peril.
I do think he will eventually, you know,
run into maybe a Houston team, an Illinois team that might stop them from getting to the national
championship. But I'm looking at the East bracket. I know it's difficult, but I cannot doubt
Camboozer and his ability to do everything that has asked of him. Yeah, it's going to be tough.
So the Yokic take was only a little crazy. Well, let's go to Arkansas and their Calipari's stud
point guard, Darius Acuff. I mean, listen, again, we're not going overboard here. The guy's delivered.
He's been incredible. And people are saying, like, is this kid?
Derek Rose, could he be better than John Wall?
I mean, you saw him in the SEC tournament.
Nobody can stop this guy.
No, so you're asking like, Derek Rose, better than John Wall.
He is way better as a college basketball player.
Now, I know Derek Rose won an NBA MVP,
and I know John Wall has had a fantastic NBA career as well.
But strictly speaking, college basketball,
Darius Aikoff, averages 23 points and almost seven assists.
He dropped 49 points in a double overtime.
at Bama. If you don't know what I'm talking about, go on YouTube, after our interview, of course,
and look at what he did. Derek Rose was a 15 point per game score at Memphis. They played the
national title game that year. John Wall was a 17 point per game performer at Kentucky. So,
statistically, this is the best guard that John Cal Perry has ever had, and I think by a significant
margin. Wow. I mean, Tyrese Maxi, Devin Booker on that list. Deere and Fox was tremendous. I mean,
listen, Aikov can't shoot it like you could, but some of the stuff you
doing with the side step three.
He's like, that looks like James Hardin level.
But here's my question.
You're old enough to remember Danny Manning and the Miracles.
We haven't seen one guy, I guess maybe Campbell Walker just carry a team to the title.
Is this guy capable of taking Arkansas to the final four?
Is he that good?
Yeah, I mean, so you said to the title and into the final four, you and I both know that
like there's a lot of, I think, really good players and good, not great teams that can make a final four.
there's not a lot of one-man shows that can win a national title.
Because when you get to the Final Four, Jamie,
he's still got two more games to play,
and you're going to be playing them against, like,
teams that have multiple NBA players and Hall of Fame coaches.
So do I think that Darius A-Cuff in Arkansas can make a Final Fuller?
Absolutely.
Do I think that they can win a national title?
They have not shown that.
They have not shown that consistency throughout the season.
Be sure to catch live editions of the herd weekdays in noon Eastern, 9 a.m. Pacific.

We're the first people to do podcasts.
Pretty, yeah, pretty wide range of podcasts throughout there.
But this one's extra special.
So how do we actually come up with a name, Hey Jonas, guys?
I honestly don't remember.
I think it was on a call about what we should call it.
And, well, we were thinking I'm originally calling it one of the early names of our band before Jonas Brothers.
This is how you guys remember it going down?
Yes.
I have a very different memory of this.
We were talking about a thing, a bit for the podcast, where people could call in and say, hey, Jonas.
And then I wrote down on my little notepad, Hey Jonas, and offered it up as a potential title for the podcast.
But thanks for remembering that, guys.

every upset, and what it really takes to win on Clay.
Jenchian went. I mean, she went down to three to Rabakina, but I'm delighted.
She's an outsider to win the French for me. And she likes Clay.
Listen, Lina Rabakina is arguably the best player in the world right now, and I actually can win on

So people get sucked into the whole,
oh, championship week, this team looked incredible.
I'm going to bet them.
You know, Purdue's interesting.
The last time they won the Big Ten tournament,
they went out and lost in the first round,
as a one.
And I just, I wondered,
I know those three seniors
wanted to go all in,
win the Big Ten.
They take down Michigan yesterday.
Casey, I have some reservations
about this team.
They do not have the size.
I know the big kid is good,
but they don't have a ton of size.
We saw them get exposed
during the regular season.
Where are you on like a Purdue
for a potential March run?
I do not have Purdue making my,
I think I'm losing in the Sweet 16
or even the second round.
And I think if you got some Purdue fans
on your show,
J-Mack. They're apprehensive about their group, too.
They don't have size. They do
have size. They have Daniel Jacobson
who's 7-4,
Oscar Clough.
Yeah, and they have Trey Kaufman-Renn.
What is the issue
for Purdue is defense?
They have ranked in around
50 to 60 in defensive
efficiency nationally.
That is not good enough. That's just not good
enough to be consistent, to make
a Final Four. In fact,
I have a little Final Four formula of national
championship formula and there's a threshold defensively that you have to be. Purdue is slow-footed
almost to a man, you know. And this is a little bit generous. I think let's tip our cap, though,
to Brady Smith. You haven't mentioned him. He's one assist away from becoming the all-time
leading assist guy in college basketball history. That is pretty incredible. And he's done it in four
years. I know there's a lot of like extra COVID year guys that are that are breaking records,
you know, getting that fifth year, sometimes even a six year.
Braden Smith's a four-year player about to break Bobby Hurley's record when he was at Duke.
That's pretty remarkable. So this team has experienced. They have Brayden Smith.
But man, when they meet teams like Illinois, Iowa State, they've gotten exposed.
So speaking of Illinois, I put them in the final four that got the most hate so far.
You have Houston. Illinois, I don't think they're.
defense meets the threshold that you have. But offensively, man, they're going to be able to hang
with anybody because of offense. Problem is, as you saw against Wisconsin, they could go up 15
and blow the lead instantly because they don't play any defense. Yeah. So, yeah, I mean, that's an
exaggeration. Amy defense, the Illinois certainly better defensively than Purdue, but I hear
what you're saying. Interestingly, I don't know if you know this, Jay Mack, but about halfway through
the year, their head coach, Brett Underwood kind of changed their defensive philosophy.
They used to be a team that wanted to take away three. He's like, no, you can't even attempt
threes and they were getting exposed at the rim.
They flip-flop and said, we're going to pack the paint, we're going to protect the
rim, we're going to make it hard for people to finish around the basket, and we're going to
allow threes, and their defensive numbers have gone up.
And I'm watching some highlights in front of me, J-Mack, this team offensively has all
the weapons you need.
They'll put five guys on the floor, including their centers and their power fours that
can shoot threes.
They love threes.
Yeah.
And when they miss them, they're one of the best offensive rebounding teams in the country.
But one guy we haven't talked about is Keith Mwagler.
This guy was a three-star prospect out of high school.
He was possibly going to redshirt, Jay Mack.
He's 6-6, 180 pounds, so really skinny.
So, like, there was questions, hey, is he going to red shirt?
And Kyle and Boswell is going to be like the senior point guard.
And almost week one of practice, Brad Underwood, it's like, no, no, no, this guy in redshirt.
He's going to be one of our best players, leaves them in scoring an 18 points a game.
shoots 40% from three, and he's just smooth.
You put him in pick and rolls.
He's a really good passer because you can see over the defense,
and he's got deep range.
Yeah.
So they have Stryakovic, too.
I don't know.
Like Underwood, you know, tough coach.
Something happened with Stryakovic midseason.
You know, there was chatter that, you know,
maybe he was going to end up transferring again.
They got the offensive pieces.
I just, I don't know if every,
it doesn't seem like everybody's thrilled there
because they have so much talent.
Fair assessment?
Kind of.
Like, I would just.
say, you know, they have so much talent and they have so much expectations that what you're
saying is there are weeks at a time where three guys are playing well and three guys are kind
of in the tank with their head down. That's kind of normal though. I would say, Jamie, that's
normal. I mean, like Houston goes through some of that. Arizona goes through some of that
where there's, you know, Braden Burys is on a hot streak and other guys aren't getting shots.
That just happens on talented teams. All right. We'll wrap up, Casey, with the Arizona
Wildcats, my pick to win it. You have Michigan. Just, I speculated earlier.
earlier, they could have five guys, their whole starting lineup drafted, four maybe in the first
round. I had Fran Fraschella on my podcast. He said that Braden Burry's reminds him of SGA.
I mean, Coa Pete is totally an amazing power forward. They're loaded, man. How are you not taking
Arizona to win it, Casey? Yeah, well, so I haven't going to the final four losing to Michigan.
He's just like, I think just Michigan has an extra gear that even Arizona and Duke don't have.
I'll just leave it at that, but I do want to talk about Arizona because Jamek, I am fast.
fascinated by this Arizona Wildcat team because of how they are winning.
There's two things I want to point out.
Arizona ranks 358th in the country in three-point attempts per game.
That's like bottom 10 in America.
They only average 16 three-point attempts per game, yet they continue to beat the best teams in the country.
They beat Florida first game of the season, and they only made two threes.
They beat Yukon on the road, only made two threes.
They beat Houston at Houston and only made three threes.
Tell me how that makes sense to anybody in 2026 basketball,
you're beating teams at that caliber and you don't need the three.
And then the second thing that fascinates me,
they're three freshmen.
You mentioned there's been only one team in the history of college basketball
that has started three freshmen and won a national title.
That was the 2012 Kentucky Wildcats led by Anthony Davis.
So if Arizona cuts down the nets,
they will do something that only one other two.
team in the history of college basketball has done.
Yeah. Casey Jacobson, great stuff.
Legendary college basketball player.
Enjoy the tournament. Thanks for the analysis, Casey.
Thanks, Jacket. Good to be with you.
All right. Great stuff. Fox College basketball analyst, Casey Jacobson.
All right. Let's go to Rachel Nichols with the news.
No, no, no, no, turn on the news.
This is the herd line news.
All right, Jason, we've been talking about it all show.
Paul Steens put together a gem last night, just one run going to.
into the fifth inning. Remember, Skeen started his collegiate career at the Air Force Academy,
and after that game, he told Ken Rosenthal about a conversation he had with one of his former
teammates. I got a text from one of my teammates at Air Force who's, I don't know where he's
stationed right now, but he said he was going to wake up at 3 to get 3 a.m. to watch the game.
puts it into perspective. Tevi's stuff. For us playing a game against a bunch of people that we know,
and we play it all the time.
It's heavy.
And so it's just an absolute honor to be able to do it.
Jason, I love seeing these guys so into this.
We talked earlier in the show just about how many all-stars are in these games
and just the players are making it important.
I have another outside theory, though, about why this is so fun.
Okay.
Is that there hasn't been baseball in the Olympics in 17 years.
Oh.
We're going to get it back as a demonstration sport in L.A. and 28.
but for nearly two decades, especially for these Latin, you know, baseball crazy countries,
there's been no international stage to compete on.
I think this feels to, I mean, there's a reason that crowd last night was 70% Dominican and 30%.
Was it 70?
That's my guess.
Okay.
But I think that's a huge part of this, and it's only going to get bigger.
How do you like my theory?
Yeah, I think that's good.
I mean, I think you're probably spot on.
I forgot it's been that long for baseball Olympics.
Yeah, almost two decades.
I don't know.
By the way, also, Paul Skeens, I'm very pleased to see him.
I mean, the pirates have been giving him no help.
Where's he? Where's his next contract? Where's he playing?
I don't know, man.
He's not going to, you talk about Aaron Judge, you're not winning a World Series with the Yankees?
He's that, you know, he's a one?
Dodgers Yankees bidding war?
He's got a 1.96 ERA over the last two seasons, which is by far the best in the league, not even close to anyone else.
And they have the least amount of wins over that same span.
And he's a young guy, too.
He's like mid-20s, right?
Yeah.
I don't know.
Right, NBA.
Fred Van Bleet hasn't played for the Rockets all season, Jason,
but he is still repping his team.
He's heard all the attention that the Spurs and Wembe have been getting.
People saying they could already win a title as opposed to Houston, right?
He does not like it.
Take a listen.
We were better than them in the last two years.
Correct?
Have they had a playoff series?
They haven't.
Okay.
So everybody slow the f*** down.
It's a marathon.
It's not a sprint.
Wemby's an alien.
Yeah, Kassel's a really good player.
Harper looks like a really good player.
I actually played with his brother in Toronto.
So, like, yeah, I like their team.
They got it.
But, like, Fox was a great addition.
They're rolling.
They're having a good year.
But, like, what's the finish line, though?
I really like Fred Graham Bleed, right?
Bet on yourself, the whole thing.
Yeah.
This is crazy talk, right?
Come on, man, that's discipline.
You know, the Rockets were my pick.
I had Rockets Knicks in the finals.
Van Vleet gets hurt like a week after I had that dumb prediction.
And now to hear,
Van Fleet say this nonsense.
The Rockets, by the way, one in three
against San Antonio this season.
The average margin of victory
for the Spurs, average, 16
points.
I mean, didn't the Spurs just beat them by like 35?
I don't know how you say they're not the better team.
If the Lakers beat the Rockets tonight,
do you think we'll open with the Lakers tomorrow?
Just taking some shots at Kevin Durant, my guy.
KD, you got big...
I think they could take both of those camps, but we'll see.
Don't you love when guys in street clothes are talking trash?
What that is?
Is that the move in the NBA, go on a podcast, talk trash?
Yeah, first of all, yes.
He doesn't play a game in 14 months or whatever.
Maybe longer.
Your team, the Knicks, by the way, came back big against the Warriors last night.
But Mike Brown, not happy, Jase.
In fact, Brown has a tradition of naming a defensive player of the game after every win, right?
Nice.
He refused to do it last night.
He was so incensed.
Listen to his thinking here.
With the veteran team, that was as one, an experience.
winning at a pre-eye level,
shouldn't have to call two timeouts
in the first six minutes of the ball game.
Not to talk, and I'm not talking X and Oates to the deal.
And so this goes it.
Nix, they've been outscored in the first quarter
in six of their last seven games.
Are you as worried Knicks fan, Jason McIntyre,
as Mike Brown?
Listen, coming home off a five-game road trip,
I know a lot of gamblers for the NBA
They love to fade the home team returning home
because they're just lethargic,
after being on the road,
and the Knicks didn't show up.
But they won the game.
What's he worried about?
I know it's against the zombie warriors.
They got nobody playing for him.
But like, I don't know.
I like it.
Maybe he's trying to fire up his troops
for the playoff run.
I mean, you know,
they're playing a bunch of tanking teams next.
Indiana, Brooklyn, Washington, New Orleans.
Those guys are trying to lose.
Nicks are going to be fine.
Well, look, they fell behind by 14 points
in the first quarter last night.
They fell behind by 15 points
against the Jazz.
the tanking jazz on Wednesday.
So I think he's worried just, you know, you can't start playoff games,
you know, double digits behind.
That's how you finish, Rachel.
Well, sometimes how you start influences how you finish, Jason.
Mike Brown, ease up.
Hey, let the guys take a little vacation.
You're playing bad teams.
Get some Tyler Kolek minutes in there, right?
I like Kuhlick.
All right, Rachel, with the news.
Well, that's the news.
And thanks for stopping by.
The Hurd Lie News.
All right, coming up, James Palmer stops by.
I'm going to ask him right out the gate.
Are the Rams all in?
Are they going to win the Super Bowl?
McVeigh, Stafford, walk off?
That's next year on the herd.

Hey, it's us, the Jonas brothers, and guess what?
We have some big news.
What's the news, huge news?
We created our own podcast called, Hey, Jonas.
We invented a podcast?
Well, we didn't invent it.
We just contributed to it.
First people to do podcasts.
Pretty, yeah, pretty wide range of podcasts throughout there.
But this one's extra special.
So how do we actually come up with a name, Hey Jonas, guys?
I honestly don't remember.
I think it was on a call about what we should call it.
Well, we were thinking I'm originally calling it one of the early names of our band.
Before Jonas Brothers was...
This is how you guys remember it going down?
Yes.
I have a very different memory of this.
We were talking about a thing, a bit for the podcast.
we could call in and say, hey Jonas,
and then I wrote down on my little notepad,
Hey Jonas, and offered it up as a potential title for the podcast.
But thanks for remembering that, guys.

Back here on the herd.
A little NFL action to get to.
I talked about the Rams earlier.
We're going to bring on James Palmer,
who does a great podcast with Steve Smith,
the former Carolina Panther,
James Palmer, NFL insider at Bleacher Report.
James, I hope free agency was good for you.
I mean, last time you were on,
I praised the artwork in the background, if you recall.
It was your young child.
Now, let me ask you about the Rams.
I really love the McDuffie move.
and he said he's just happy to go to a team that's a contender,
which I'm surprised he didn't get more pickup.
Your thoughts on the Rams kind of going all in
and maybe seeing McVeigh and Stafford walk away after this.
Yeah, it'll be interesting to see what happens, right?
Because they both teased it before in the past, right?
Jason, both of them.
But what do they do in 2026?
I think they are all in.
I mean, in my opinion, all of last year,
they were one of the two best teams in football.
The other one just happened to be in their division
and won the Super Bowl.
But you saw the moves that they make.
You saw it started at the trade dead.
dying. Honestly, when they made the move for Roger McCreary at the corner spot, they were kind of like,
all right, we need to fix what's going on in our secondary. We've kind of overlooked it.
My understanding always was if we're great up front, we can kind of piece things together in the
secondary. Then they started realizing the secondary was a bit of an issue along with special teams.
You saw them correct both of those. The Trent McDuffie move is a massive swing. This is one of
the best corners in football. I remember Pat Sartan telling me during training camp. I was like,
who do you watch? You're the best corner in football. He's like, I watch Derek Stingley,
and I watch Trent McDuffie. That's who I watch. And so that,
that addition, and they bring another guy from the chiefs, you know, to help their secondary.
You look at where they're at, and the contracts that are coming up to me, Jason, really signifies that they're all in.
They built this team really through the draft over 23, 24, those years.
Those bills are come and due after 26 here.
And so there's going to be some shuffling humming.
And so you go all in here with everybody and maybe your last hurrah with Matthew Stafford and playing the Super Bowl perhaps right there in your own backyard.
It does look like they're all in from the moves that Lesney has made.
and why wouldn't he play the game this way?
This is how we know less.
I forgot Super Bowl back at SoFi.
So let me ask,
do you buy the AJ Brown rumors that popped up?
The Rams were allegedly trying to trade for him recently,
and then they were like,
oh, maybe we'll have to move on from Devante.
Listen, a lot of reporters have a lot of stuff.
Your thoughts on the AJ Brown situation,
were the Rams in the Mick or someone else?
I didn't hear them as much.
I know that, you know, less is one of those GMs that will call,
and he will try to always make a big swing.
You know, that's how we're looking, you know,
Always keep an eye on James Gladstone down there in Jacksonville because he comes from
Wes's world.
Let's make sure we can always keep an eye on making a big move at all at all times.
But when I started hearing about it, I'm going, how are they going to make this work?
I mean, go ask Cooper Cup when he started getting replaced by Pooka and Akua, how this offense
works with trying to feed multiple receivers.
It just really doesn't.
It really is focused around one receiver.
Now, if they were going to move to A.J. Brown, you go, well, somebody has to be the
odd man out.
And it's not going to be Puka.
I would also say, if you watch anything of last year,
of Matthew Stafford and Devante Adams in the Red Zone,
it was borderline unstoppable.
Like, it was tele...
You know, I mean, it was like on another level.
It was like a Travis Kelsey, you know,
Patrick Mahomes type of connection down there.
I don't know if you want to move on from that
when you're all in,
but I would say that, yeah,
I think less has interest in pretty much everything.
And I think you put A.J. Brown a little bit
into the mix there.
The A.J. Brown stuff is almost getting tiresome.
He's being linked to so many teams.
Is the media trying to trade him?
or is Philly actually trying to trade him?
Yeah, it's so weird because I feel like the pacing from the two teams that are probably the most involved,
that's Philly and most likely New England, to my understanding.
Neither one has a really a dead end that they have to make a trade.
We know that time plays a part in this, and I want to dive into where the picks would be.
Obviously, you know, without competing offers, Howie Rosen's going to sit and try to get the most out of it as he can,
because that doesn't drive the price up or drive the pace of this up.
And I think how he's very good at remaining patient,
how he wouldn't mind being patient going past June 1st,
where the cap number goes from 40 million,
the dead number that they'd have to incur drops to below 20,
to my understanding, after June 1st.
Now, if you're the Patriots and you're looking to perhaps,
if it's a one, like a lot of people are saying,
which still seems very rich to me,
you're going to be giving up pick 31 in 2026.
If this trade is after June 1st,
you'd be giving up your 1 in 2027.
What is the likelihood of that being 31 or 32?
do. There's a very good chance that pick's actually going to be better for Philadelphia in 27
than it would be where it sits right now at 31 and 26 because a lot of people believe with
a tougher schedule, maybe some things not falling entirely in the Patriots way in 26,
that it's not going to be the same type of season that they had getting to the Super Bowl.
So the pick would actually benefit Philadelphia if it was later.
I also would say, Howie doesn't mind waiting.
If there's any general manager that does more moves during training camp, it's Howie Roseman.
And if he gets extra money with this trade happening,
he wouldn't mind making this team better right up to the first game of the season.
You know, he's brought in guys in the secondary right up before the start of the season in the past.
So timing is really kind of the part with this.
There's really nothing that speeds this up other than two teams that it looks like right now are staring at each other.
I do know that the Romeo Dobbs deal, and I think a very sneaky good move for New England,
does not change their outlook on acquiring AJ Brown.
Interesting.
Let's go to the Kyler Murray move.
Kyler Murray to the Vikings.
everybody knew it was happening one-year deal.
I don't know why I was so in on J.J. McCarthy last year in the offseason.
I guess the Jim Harbaugh stuff got me excited.
He didn't deliver, and now they get Kyler Maria, former number one pick.
I'm just curious, is this Kevin O'Connell pushing for this?
The new GM? What are you hearing?
Yeah, Kevin was all on board.
I mean, this is really the one guy that Kevin thought was like the free agent quarterback
if you wanted to bring in another reclamation project.
And that's what they wanted.
They wanted to do it last year.
Sam Dardo went elsewhere, Daniel Jones went elsewhere, and they were looking about mid-season to start looking at those options again.
And Kyler Murray was the one that they were kind of staring at, right there going, this is the most talented guy, he's still 28, he's got a great arm, he's extremely accurate, he's still a playmaker.
This is who we'd like to probably target, and it was the guy that they targeted.
When he was released, and now it's just a football decision and no finances are really involved in it at all outside of Eric Burkart, his agent, making sure there's no tag clause in it after the 26.
season so he could potentially be maybe the most coveted free agent if things go well in 27.
And this is the one spot that Kyler wanted to be in because if you look at the roster,
it's probably the best landing spot he could have had.
And you know that they've brought quarterbacks along.
And usually every quarterback, he didn't even play.
Daniel Jones came out a better quarterback from spending time with Kevin O'Connell.
The one thing I would look at is what is next for JJ McCarthy?
Because this doesn't appear to be a quarterback competition they're setting up.
This is a guy that they're looking at that could potentially be to my understanding
their long-term solution quarterback.
If it goes well, I wouldn't be surprised if they go, let's keep Tyler Murray.
If this goes great, I mean, they tried to do it with Sam Darnold.
The money didn't work, but it went well with Sam.
It went terrible at the end.
But they did want to bring him back.
Now, numbers and all those things always come into play.
I don't know what JJ McCarthy's future is.
I still think they want to have some sort of faith in him if he loses this job.
But I don't know what the market would be, Jason, for him.
So, James, is this an open competition?
or does Kyler come in as the favorite?
I would think if I'm Kyler Murray,
I'm carrying myself into this competition,
like I'm the frontrunner.
Like that's the way I would do it.
Now, from Kevin O'Connell's perspective,
I think he's giving them every opportunity.
My point is there was an idea of this of going,
we need to give J.J. McCarthy some competition.
That'll really bring out the best in him.
You know, how many organizations think that way.
But when you're bringing in a former Heism winner,
former number one overall pick,
a guy who was a 67% completion percentage,
to come in with you, I don't see it much as like a competition.
Like I think there's almost a likelihood.
There's plenty of players on the team going,
Kyler's probably going to win this job here.
I don't say like they're handing him in the job at any stretch,
but I would think that's the thinking.
Now, the one thing we do have to keep an eye on is this is a timing offense
that is precise, and that is the way Justin Jefferson plays football.
He's a professional receiver.
He wants the ball on time.
Kyler has never played that way in his career.
And Kevin O'Connell will not be the first guy who,
is trying to get him to play on time.
So they're going to have to blend some things together for sure,
offensively, if he's the one.
James, we've got 30 seconds left.
Justin Fields traded from my Jets to the Chiefs.
Is he the starter week one?
Is this a big nothing burger, just a backup quarterback?
Or is he maybe a next Sam Darnold?
Yeah, it's not a nothing burger because he wants all the reps, right?
And he's going to get a chance to get all the reps.
Same thing with Tua.
I think that's important with both of these that they get all the reps in the off season
with an injured quarterback.
So if he wants to rehab himself and rebuild himself back up,
go be with Andy Reid and take all the reps why Mahomes is out.
I don't want to put a timeline on Patrick, but I'll just say this.
I'd be surprised, very surprised if he's not out there week one,
just by the way this is going and the way he's attacked it.
But also this allows them not to rush him by any stretch if you do have a former first round pick in your building.
Wow, great stuff. James Palmer.
I mean, man, that Kyler stuff.
Woo-hoo.
Oh, boy.
All right.
We'll talk to you again soon, James.
Thanks a lot.
Sounds good, man.
Good, good senior.
Yeah.
Oh, boy.
That was spicy.
You know, Rachel was talking to me during the break earlier about this Kyler situation.
And I was like, come, is JJ McCarthy?
Is he incumbent?
They drafted him top 10.
I did not realize it was this bleak.
But the timing offense part that he talked about was great.
Kyler likes to like do his own thing in the pocket.
I'm going to scramble around and next stuff happened.
We don't know, right?
So we'll see how the training camp goes, quarterback competition or not really a quarterback
competition or whatever.
But that's got to be tough if you're JJ.
You've been there for two years.
You're the guy here.
A lot of hype, right?
I think the first year after his rookie season, so much hype around him.
Kyla Marie's not a hold-the-clippboard chill-out guy either.
No, but, you know, short quarterbacks in the NFL, there's limitations.
And as a short human, I feel sad about that.
But it is hard to see over your lineman.
And that makes a difference sometimes.
Poor, poor guy, JJ.
He's been through a lot.
Can't stay healthy.
You got to stay healthy.
Stinks.
All right.
We made it through day one, Rachel.
Fairly.
She hated my Yokich boozer take.
