This is an I-Heart podcast.
Guaranteed Human.
Another podcast from some SNL, late-night comedy guy, not quite.
Unhumor me with Robert Smygel and friends.
Me and hilarious guests from Bob Odenkirk to David Letterman
help make you funnier.
This week, my guest, SNL's Mikey Day and head writer, Streeter Seidel,
help an a cappella band with their between songs banter.
Where does your group perform?
We do some retirement homes.
Those people are starving for banter.
Listen to humor me with Robert Smigel
and friends on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.

Got good info.
Good stories today.

Thanks for making us part of your day.
So I got a question.
So as a member,
I used to be more of a reporter
when I was in, like, local TV and radio,
than I am now, which is just, you know,
out there screaming stuff.
So an interesting thing happened in the Braves.
series against the Phillies.
So if you don't know, I want to give you the backstory.
So, Phillies win game one in Atlanta.
Uh-oh, uh-oh, because the favorite are all losing in baseball.
Game two, the Phillies lead, Braves come storming back.
And Bryce Harper, a remarkable catch in the outfield by the Braves, they double him off
the base, and the Braves even up the series.
And, you know, Harper got a lot of heat for it, but he's a very aggressive player, hitter,
base runner, he got doubled up.
So in the clubhouse after the game, a Braves reporter heard Orlando Arcea, a player for the Braves,
kind of badmouthed in Harper, kind of making fun of him.
And he reported it.
Now, I wouldn't have done that because my takeaway was when I was in the clubhouse,
unless you give me an answer, I'm not going to snoop on you, especially if I'm a baseball
reporter and I'm covering you for 162 games.
That is my take on the situation.
I'm not here to rip.
I don't even know who the reporter was.
But I heard a lot of things.
I've heard a lot of things at dinners, at bars from athletes, in conversations, in clubhouses,
in locker rooms.
I don't report them.
Unless they're, like, funny, because I think you break a trust.
But if you say something to me and you're ticked off, and even if you regret it,
I think I have a responsibility to report it because I asked you, and your emotion is real.
It's authentic, and I'm there in the moment.
And that's how you felt in the moment, even if 20 minutes later, you regret it in the moment you
said it, that you were pissed at your coach or manager, your teammate.
So anyway, Bryce Harper, hearing about those comments, was, I would say, in an elevated emotional state last night, jacked a couple of Titanic home runs.
Here's one.
Stay's put.
And there's a high fly ball.
Deep right field.
Harper watches it fly.
Well, he's done it so many times in his career in the postseason and against this Atlanta Brave squad.
And he stares in him as he rounds.
the bases and there's there's the second one.
Watching Harris turns.
Harris leaps and it's gone.
Harper with a rainmaker and another
stair down.
Seven to one Phillies
and it's turned it into the Bryce Harper game
again. So here was Bryce afterwards
on being motivated about hearing those comments
from the Braves player.
It's a super competitive game that we play
and, you know, from both sides of the ball.
And I enjoy commentary and things.
And like I said, you know, I listen to WIP,
and you hear a lot of stuff on there as well at times.
And I just enjoy it.
It's a part of the reason why we play this game.
Was there any motivation?
I mean, anytime anybody says something, right?
I mean, that's what it's all about.
You enjoy staring them down?
Yeah, I mean, I stared right at him.
I love Bryce Harper.
I love everything about Bryce Harper.
I love the fact that he acknowledges.
Yeah, I listen to local radio and I get really mad.
Sometimes I call so vulnerable.
It's like I love Bryce Harper.
The kid was in Nevada.
He was so good in high school at 16 that Sports Illustrated put him on the cover.
He was Tiger Woods.
Like Sports Illustrated doesn't, it seemed like at the time, don't put like teenagers and say,
this is the best baseball player ever.
That dude is, I love him.
By the way, Diana Ruse.
covered Bryce Harper and D.C.
And if I recall, Diana, you get along with him pretty well.
Don't you guys have, he's very respectful, fun.
You know him pretty well.
Yeah, I knew him when he was actually getting a lot of scrutiny.
Well, he was getting scrutinized a lot from the media and locally.
And he was so young, not to age myself here, because it was years ago that I covered him when he was with the nationals.
And everyone knew he was a superstar.
and he always had that superstar treatment around him, right?
You always had the communications people around them
and keeping their hands up to make sure you're not getting that one-on-one time.
I'll give Bryce Harper a lot of credit.
Once he figured out a way to build some trust with you in the media,
he would let you in.
But I have to tell you, he doesn't let a lot of people in.
He truly does not.
And I watched it for years.
And there's reason for it.
There is a lot.
because he knows he can't trust a lot of people
because so many people wanted to see him fail.
But to see the growth,
the man he was years ago to who he is now
has matured in a way,
and we've all watched it unfold.
I saw him at the waste management, actually,
during the Super Bowl, and we caught up,
and we were laughing so much about just really
how much, A, his life has changed
and how he's truly found the place he wants to be.
And Colin, have you ever been around someone who just has that magnetic joy about where they are in their life?
The guy was smiling the entire time he was talking about Philly.
So it was just really cool to be around someone who's hit their success and lived up, not even just to the hype, but probably beyond it.
By the way, I met his one time I went to a, I was going to a game, I think it was in San Diego.
And I was in line for a beer.
And his dad came up to me.
And he goes, hey, thanks for saying nice stuff about my kid.
And he was just, he was like Bryce.
He was just so authentic and real.
He's like, yeah, that's really nice.
I really appreciate it.
I don't want to bother you.
I'm like, you want me to buy a beer?
No, I can do it myself.
And I was like, all right, dad's son, you could totally see the two.
It just felt like.
So I just, I love the fact that he's having a great life because he's given so much
of the game and he got so much pushback because of his style and the aesthetics and his hair
and he's good luck.
I'm watching a David Beckham special on Netflix.
And it reminds me a lot of David Beckham.
Great.
at like 19, 17, 18, 19, beloved initially, went through an ugly, ugly stage with some disappointment,
and then they go back to loving him. And that's what you should do with Bryce Harper and David Beckham.
You should love them because we're all so lucky they've provided these great moments for all of us, right?
Yeah, and there's comfort in being who you are. And that's what I feel that he has at this point in his life.
He knows who he is. He's accepted it. He's performed at such a high level. And man,
It must feel good to walk into the bank and feel the love all the time.
I spent a lot of time in Philly.
My family lives there.
And he's a god there, you know, right next to Jalen Hertz and Jason Kelsey.
So he is exactly where he should be.
I'm so glad you brought up reporters keeping things to themselves before because he and I had a lot of conversations at least management about things.
I wish I could say right now because we were chatting about the nationals in Washington at the time he was there.
But the growth in it, he's just to really become an athlete.
is so easy to root for.
Okay, Diana, I got Diana Rusini for our radio audience,
the Athletic Senior NFL Insider.
We love having her on the show.
So I got three things I really want to address.
We've gone back and forth on the Kirk Cousin stuff,
and J-Mack, to his credit, said before the season,
when they were moving off to Alvin Cook,
he said it feels like they're going to start rebooting some things here.
And I do think Kirk has a market.
So I guess I would ask you,
are the Vikings actually, Diana, considering moving him?
Or is it just talk?
Yeah, they're having.
conversations about it. I don't think it's as serious as we've made it. You know, I think we've
heard rumblings about a movement of Kirk Cousins since Aaron Rogers went down, right? Because that
seemed to be the team that probably should be in the market for a player like Kirk Cousins,
especially knowing what that Jets roster looks like. But I can tell you the Jets have not called
the Minnesota Vikings. The Minnesota Vikings have not called the New York Jets from the conversations
I've had with both sides. So that does not seem to be a scenario that's going to play. New York
continues to tell me this is a Zach Wilson team. And then you have some of those floaters out there,
some of those teams like the Atlanta Falcons, for example, right, that I think that there's a little
chatter going around that perhaps maybe they should move on from Desmond Reader, even though he did
have a good game last week. And from what I can gather, that's not a team looking to get into
the Kirk Cousin sweepstakes. So while Jason's right, like there's a bit of a feeling of a rebranding
They're rebuilding there slowly in Minnesota.
I think when this deadline comes, I think her cousins will most likely stay in Minnesota past Halloween.
Okay. Deshawn Watson's situation, I don't get it.
I've never seen a quarterback medically clear to play and not play.
I'm just looking for some clarity.
I don't know if anybody outside of Deshaun has all the answers.
Do we have some clarity of what exactly is going on?
Yeah, I've got a few for you.
So it's a Bruce Rotator cuff.
Okay, so it's difficult to manage because the pain changes throughout.
It's not like a consistent feeling where all day long it's painful.
Sometimes it feels a little bit better and then sometimes it feels severe,
which is why on Sunday you saw so many of us insiders reporting Deshaun Watson expected to play.
He should be out there, right?
Because that's the information that we were gathering because that's what the team was believing
and thinking because they were in touch and obviously communicating with their quarterback.
But once he went out there and just went through a workout, it just didn't feel good.
And this is a type of injury.
It's like a two to six week injury, right?
So we're on week three here just about.
So you got to figure it probably doesn't feel great just yet.
And we see that they're making moves, you know, at the backup quarterback position at this point with PJ Walker getting called up from the
from the practice squad and will most likely take these first team reps this week.
But I think it's just going to be one of these situations, Colin,
where they're going to see every day how he feels and we'll see how he wakes up on Sunday.
Okay, I've never asked a question about Swifties,
but the Kelsey Swift thing is interesting.
I think Kansas City's issue is they have a very young, unproven receiving core,
and they don't have as much firepower.
I don't think it's a Swifty issue.
But it is interesting.
I mean, if Beyonce was hard.
covering around your football team, it would be, many would suspect, a distraction.
Has it affected anything?
It's a well-run organization, but it's like a global story.
I would say tell us was bigger than Beyonce at this point.
I mean, I know the beehive's going to come at me right now, but just the way it feels right now,
she's the biggest star of my lifetime.
I've never seen anything like it.
I was around her on Sunday night football when she came to the game at MetLife stadium
where she was there to watch.
Travis. And, you know, Colin, you know how this is when you do this job. I don't want to use all my
sources and information or at least try to get information on things that don't really matter,
right? So I want to save the bullets. I don't want to waste them on asking the Kansas City
Chiefs about Taylor Swift. But at the end of the day, I had to ask about it because it is a story,
right? It is. We're all paying attention. And we're seeing this offense not clicking.
I talked to Travis after that game on Sunday night football against the Jets where, you know,
Yeah, he led with catches, but they were not good.
And he told me, he's like, I'm pissed.
I said, why? Why are you mad?
He's like, I mean, I knew why he was mad, but I wanted to know.
And he's like, because we're not helping our defense at all.
We are not clicking, right?
So I did wind up asking a few people in that building what it's been like.
And they said they've let Travis really dictate how they're reacting to all of it.
And it's really been put on him.
And he's done a really good job of keeping it out of the building.
The only thing that they did add is it's a little weird that they're
paparazzi outside the facility and outside Travis's home all the time.
But otherwise, besides the tellers of songs that are being played in the locker room,
they're trying to really keep it about their business.
And I think it's fading.
The vibe of it all, the excitement of all, it's kind of fading away.
So, we've got to ask you about this because Sean Payton used to work here, and I'm interested.
I do think, I said it yesterday.
I was a guess it wasn't source.
I said I would move Jerry Judy or Cortland Sutton.
They hit on a young receiver.
And the NFL college football furnishes the NFL with a NFL.
about 20 new receivers every year. It's not a quarterback or left tackle. There's a surplus of
great receivers. I would move off a couple of the receivers. And then I saw a story today about that.
So, if Denver did make a move, is, are they, would they move the, where would they, who would
they move and how many, what's your guess? Not my guess, but from my sense, from having conversations,
I think if this team is going to move anyone, it's going to be on the defensive side of the ball.
That's where they really see that they need to make some deals and move on from some.
of the guys on this roster.
Right?
So right now, Frank Clark just adjusted his contract.
He's taking less money.
He's obviously on the out, right?
So they're playing the chiefs tonight.
He's not activated.
This makes a lot of sense.
He's either going to get cut or get traded.
So they've made two moves, obviously.
It'll be two moves over the last week.
So there's obviously some philosophy here in terms of the defensive side of the ball.
Now, do I think that they're going to be open to hearing what teams are interested in?
terms of the receivers, Cortland Sutton, Jerry, Judy, obviously, but in terms of interest from
other teams, I think Sutton, of the two receivers, if there was anyone that would get
moved, it would be him because of his contract. But I still don't feel like the Denver Broncos
are there just yet in terms of dealing those guys, just because I know they like them.
Yeah. Diana has only one gear crushing it. That's all she does is crush it. We love having
you on the show. A continued success. We will talk again and we will have you on. When
Stuff breaks. You are terrific today as usual. And it's great seeing you. Thank you. I'm your
hustler, Colin. Hustler. She's a hustler. I like that. Somebody from the very beginning
was breaking stories. And that takes a lot of, I sit up here and talking to a microphone,
traveling all over the country, making calls, doing stuff. Excellent. Greg CoSell, Diana
Rucini crushed today. I'll tell you, that whole Bryce Harper thing.
is he is magic man he is years ago i had a discussion with an ESPN manager type i think his name
was Glenn Jacobs i'm all sure of it and i used to have a little gym on the campus there and i was
working out and he was a you know i was curious about the business and i asked him a question and this was
uh 15 18 years ago and i he said uh i had i'd been talking on the air that i was talking less
baseball like 15 years ESPN was redsock territory yankee territory and i didn't talk as much baseball as
everybody else. And he said, you know, Colin, you're actually right on this. Baseball has a star
problem that where in football you see Brady for 70 snaps. In basketball, you see LeBron for three
hours. In baseball, four at bats. If you get one hit, you're on the bases. Half the time you strike
out, you're back in the dugout. We don't see the star. He goes, that's why the time the defensive
shift, well, I don't think was a thing. The defensive shift was always terrible for baseball.
I want Bryce Harper not lining out to a second baseman playing short right.
I want Bryce Harper and his hair on the bases.
So when you get these postseason games and Bryce Harper, he's got a fight, he's staring down the shortstop.
It's like more Bryce, more face, more hair, more star power.
It moves the needle.
So this is why playoff baseball, when you can get big star, Aaron Judge, not in the playoffs,
really hurts baseball.
I want Aaron Judge at second base.
I don't want, Shohay Otani, not even.
Mike Trout was a star, but didn't feel like it on TV.
Bryce Harper and Aaron Judge, those are television stars.
And so to see Bryce on TV, I couldn't shut it off.
Between that bank, between the fans, the crowd, the Sea of Red.
It's just great TV.
I have a great parlay for you this weekend, thanks to Drafking Sportsbook.

I'll take the Jags at home minus 4 to win and cover against the Colts,
who are going with a backup quarterback. Colts out played them in week one.
Jags will not overlook Indy, Jags minus 4.
Seahks at the Bengals, Cincinnati found their groove.
This game is urgent.
They're in a very tough division.
Every game matters now after a rocky start.
I'll take the Bengals minus 3 to cover.
And the commanders with extra prep off a blowout loss, humiliated, get point.
Two and a half at Atlanta.
Atlanta beat Houston.
I don't think they're better than Houston.
They just beat them.
I'm going to take the commanders plus two and a half.

You know, I don't like to complain, but the staff, for the first time in seven years,
got me a new chair and didn't give me a heads up.
And the only thing missing here is a Guinness.
It's a bar stool.
So I've been off all day, somehow have overcome it, and been to lucid and to, you know,
as usual, just firing stuff off here.
I'm balancing, I'm almost falling on the ground every other segment.
I'm overcoming a lot over here today.
That should be considered.
Hang in there, buddy.
All right.
J-Mack with the news.
No, no, no, no, no.
Turn on the news.
This is the herd line news.
I'd give you no heads up on it.
Unbelievable.
Nothing.
I just sat down.
There's nothing to sit on over here.
Again, I don't like to complain.
Yeah, you're not really a complainer.
You know who is complaining, Lamar Jackson?
because the raven's dropped a billion passes in last week's loss to the Steelers,
including some touchdowns.
I don't know, that Mark Andrews was a drop.
I mean, come on.
That's a drop by Aguilar.
Here's Bateman, the young kid.
Look at that.
It's a touchdown.
I just need to send them the flowers.
Mark Andrews.
That's not a drop.
That's a tough of catch.
Manageable, manageable.
But Lamar's playing really well.
Lamar is.
Do you like them this week against the Titans?
I did bet them minus four.
What about you?
I think ball, yeah.
I initially was on the Titan side.
and it's amazing what the internet provides information.
And you start going deeper into this game, and Baltimore's the side, I think.
I'm going to agree with you. Lamar Jackson is not worried about the drops
and gave a vote of confidence to his receivers.
I don't need to say anything. Those guys, you know, they feel how I feel.
You know, they want to make a play.
We haven't had that before.
You know, it was the first time it happened.
It happened in a rival game, you know, what we didn't want it to happen.
But I believe our guys locked down right now, and they're going to be best.
better so a lot.
He's really easy to like.
I think he has just gotten better and better and better.
I think he was so dynamic and explosive that we now don't give him any credit for the throwing part.
He makes tough throw.
And by the way, he's got arm angle stuff.
He does a lot of that arm angle stuff.
He did make a bad throw in the end zone.
Joey Porter, the young kid picked it off.
Everybody does.
Joy Porter's a pretty good player too.
Everybody makes bad throws.
We love Matt Stafford.
Matt gives you about two clunkers,
Sunday. I mean, I think I'm pitching a perfect game today. I don't know. You've been strong today.
By the way, just to be clear, I don't like dislike the Titans, but I do like the Ravens.
They left early in the week. Remember we talk about this? Those London trips and the
Jacks, not the Jags, I'm sorry, the Titans are leaving on, I think, today. So they're going to
catch like a red eye. They land to, like, that's not a lot of time. Historically, you want to
leave early in the week. Just file that away for if the Titans come out sleepy, maybe a first
Every Thursday or London game, one of the teams looks off.
Buffalo was just off last week.
Josh Allen was fine, as Greg CoSelt said.
Those Thursday night games, Washington looked terrible.
I actually like Washington this week.
In Atlanta.
Oh, dear.
All right, we'll have to discuss that.
Next up, Jared Goff and Baker Mayfield, both thriving.
Jared Goff had a resurgence in joining the alliance,
and Baker playing some of the best football in his career,
but it's early in Tampa.
The two faced off on Sunday,
had a lot of praise to give to Mr. Goff.
Jared's a stud coming from somebody that needed a fresh start as well.
Jared's a stud.
I think he's playing really well.
I think you can tell his leadership and all the things that why he got chosen that high.
He's truly showing that now.
And so, yeah, you know, not every fit's perfect.
And for him, I think his confidence continue to grow.
And he's got all the tools you want.
Tall guy, got a good arm, really, really smart.
And so he's able to make plays.
and he's, you know, the sneaky thing about his game is his play action, all his fakes and stuff.
He's really, really good at that.
He's almost got it down to a science.
So I love his game. He's a good guy, too.
That is the best quote for, I'm starting to like Baker Mayfield a lot.
Not just like him, like him a lot.
I'm very forgiving.
So you might unblock him on Twitter?
I don't block anybody, do I?
He blocked me a couple years back.
Well, you were probably being rude.
Unlakely.
I got to tell you something.
I'm really liking this Baker Mayfield.
Okay.
I like him a lot.
against Detroit?
I don't have a strong feeling on this game.
I think Detroit's really good, but they just clobbered somebody.
And by the way, Tampa has been a tough out.
I don't know.
I just like this Baker.
I know fans think, I don't, I'm not a grudge holder.
And there's no reason for me to hold a grudge.
I thought he was overdrafted.
He didn't like it.
We went back and sparred.
But the truth of the matter is, he's been a really good.
fit for them.
Aside from Baker, how do you avoid holding grudges?
I need help with one or two of them.
My theory on grudges is holding a grudge as chain-smoking hate.
It punishes you, not the other person.
If I kept hating Baker, he's having a great life.
He's got a beautiful life.
He's having a great time.
He's making bank.
The grudge hurts me.
It's bad for your heart to have hate in it.
You don't have to, like, hate the person.
But if you encounter them, oh,
That's right.
I can't stand this bleep-de-bleep.
Let me just go the other way.
I don't, like, outwardly hate the guy,
but, like, I just don't want to be near.
Well, there are people I avoid.
I'm thinking about getting over one of my situations.
Wow.
I don't have many people, but I'm thinking about making a call.
I've probably got three or four.
Remember my neighbor, you know, he's still.
Well, yeah, you know, that's different.
That's territorial.
I mean.
If you have a zany neighbor, that's just, you know, I had one of those ones.
I'm not the only one who doesn't like him.
Let's just say that. All right, let's move on. Let's not talk about that on television.
Travis Kelsey is questionable tonight for Broncos Chiefs.
He's got that ankle injury. So this will be the second injury of the season for him.
What is he? Thirty-four years old? Listen, ma'am.
If he's playing the long game and you know you're going to be in the playoffs and maybe the Super Bowl,
I don't see why he doesn't just say, you know what, I'm going to punt tonight.
We've got the Chargers next week. I don't want to re-aggravate this ankle.
Well, it would be easy if you had a receiving core that helped Mahomes.
but they need him.
That's a whole different ball game.
I think they should go after like one of these affordable receivers.
I think they need another guy.
Now, they may, because they just won a Super Bowl,
their takeaway is probably,
we're going to be in the group of five teams playing for it.
So let's just, let's go without that.
But I, you know, strike when the iron's hot.
Like, they're good.
Mahomes Prime.
Kelsey's probably got one or two more years.
So, I mean, my takeaway is you can,
could just say in most years, Travis takes the night off. Now he's an older Travis and they don't
have a good receiving court. Not now currently. Okay. In other Chiefs Broncos news, it is being reported
that Taylor Swift will be at the game tonight. I know that's hugely important to you. I also
want to add Taylor Swift's movie opens tomorrow. We're going, me and the family. You're going to that
movie. It's basically a movie of her tour or whatever. Oh, that's different. That's not a mover. My daughter's
Is that a movie or a doc?
She turned it into a movie.
She's just printing money at this point.
So it's smart for her to be on a Thursday night football game.
I don't know.
So she is, see, I still am not sure.
I think they're both elevating each other.
I mean, they may be attracted to each other,
but I think both of them are elevating each other's brand.
So first of all.
Do you think they're really holding hands and committed?
Did anybody hit you up about the Jets theory that we had on here?
No, but I thought it was an, I didn't believe it,
I heard from a few people who were like, wow, that's deep.
I was like, do you think this is a...
I think there's something there.
Listen, if she's attractive and talented and smart and wealthy and friendly and has a nice smile.
There's a lot of attractive people.
It's called Hollywood.
That doesn't mean they're hooking up.
I think this is very professional.
I don't want to...
I think it's professional.
Taylor's work is a great catch and if Travis Kelsey can make that happen.
I think it's very mutually beneficial business relationship.
Certainly.
And you can still like somebody and think that.
attractive. I'm not, I know, I'm rooting for love. I, I love, I love, I love. So I'm rooting for
a spark. I love, I would love to see him get married. Andy Reed best man, that would be great.
They've been hanging out for two months. Wouldn't that be great? Andy Reed Mahomes.
Are you one of these like shotgun wedding guys? Have you, you know, like, wait, like, we don't,
we don't need to go into my marriage history. I didn't know there was a history. Okay. Wow.
It's sorted. Yeah. A lot of stuff. Ten and a half point favorites is the line. I would,
I know if this sounds weird, I would take Denver plus 10.5.
If Kelsey doesn't play with that receiving court?
No, we don't know. He's questionable.
I mean, now if Taylor's going to be at the game, he's not going to no-show, is he?
He's got to play.
That's actually an interesting take.
If he's on the fence and she shows up, he's got to play.
This is probably a small car payment as opposed to like, you know, a mortgage payment that you put on some games.
I don't do mortgage payments. You do.
I rarely.
I don't.
Okay.
I told you, 50 bones, that's what I bet.
That's all I bet.
That's why you always pay for my drinks, right?
Well, I just don't, you know, you don't need to bet a fortune.
If you have, I'm going to tell you something.
When I win 50 bucks, I'm pumping a fist.
I love it.
It's free cash.
It's a good feeling.
Winning?
Not that I don't report it to the IRS immediately, but it's free lettuce.
J-Mack with the news.
Well, that's the news.
And thanks for stopping by.
The Herd-Lie News.
I thought Diana Rusini, interesting stuff today about that Deshawn Watson injury,
about how like sometimes he wakes up and it's very painful sometimes.
The whole Cleveland, it's like, it's hard not to be cynical.
His personal stories weird and sketchy and Cleveland's background is impulsive and sketchy.
It's hard not to be, look at Cleveland and be like, I don't like any of this.
I haven't bet them all year.
I don't want to be.
I just, I'm not into the team.
And, you know, I can usually separate.
art from artist.
Like I, you know, I know that some musical artists, some actors, some athletes have done bad
things.
I'm, I'm, you know, I'm not overly moralistic on that stuff.
Everybody's got flexible morality.
But his situation with that, all that stuff grossed me out.
And I just, I don't know what it is.
I'm having trouble separating that from the player.
It just is too much.
It was weird.
If you were bad for, did a bad thing, it's one thing.
People make mistakes.
but when you have a habit of doing something that's sketchy and I just, it just doesn't sit with me.
And I'm not real moralist on the air.
I don't think that's my brand.
It doesn't really work for me.
Bucky Brooks around the corner.
He was with the Jags last week, Bills.
We're going to talk about a bunch of stuff.
Cowboys, Mike McCarthy, Chargers.
That's arguably the best game of the weekend and it's on Monday night.
So we'll talk about that.

All right, Bucky Brooks, Fox Sports, played in the league, scout in the league.
Now he's with us.
All right, I got a lot of stuff to dive in on.
Okay.
All right.
So I fashion myself as I could be a regional scout.
Okay.
Area Scout.
You want to get in the car and just drive all over?
No, I don't want to do it.
Oh.
I just fashion myself as capable of doing it.
Okay.
I can't be a scouting director.
I'm busy.
Oh.
I got cocktails.
I can't watch it.
I can't watch, you know, footage of Purdue.
I got things to do.
Okay.
So here's my thing.
So when I watched C.J. Stroud at Ohio State, I had a Herbert comp.
I said, nobody thought Herbert could move until the last game in Oregon said,
all right, kid, move.
We need to win.
Nobody thought Stroud could move until Georgia.
And you're like, I didn't know I could do it.
So he was more athletic than I thought.
Then I heard the golf comp.
And so my takeaway was, I didn't see a lot of juice with him at Ohio State.
but golf's underrated.
If you're golf with mobility,
you're a top 10 quarterback.
So, I mean, that, what was your,
did you predict this?
So I can't say I predicted it,
but I was too close to the situation.
So Bryce Young and C.J. Stroud,
I was working events,
Elite 11, the opening,
they were on my team.
Both of those guys were on my team.
Bryce Young was like the Ballyhooed prospect.
C.J. Stroud was underrated.
Throughout that week,
C.J. Stroud was the MVP of Elite 11.
It clicked for him when he was there performing 707 best of the best.
He's dealing, quiet but confident, has a little edge to him when he's playing.
And so when all of this conversation was going on about the S2 testing and this,
I felt like people were missing out on what he was.
He was the most natural thrower in the draft.
When you watched him, he's the kind of quarterback that's playing the league for the last 25, 30 years.
He can spin it.
He can make all the throws, touch time and anticipation.
The knock on him, oh, he's not athletic enough.
Well, that was my knock.
Right.
But my thing had always been, well, wait a minute.
For years we've been talking about you've got to be able to throw from the pocket.
Here's one of the best that we've seen throw from the pocket and do it over and over and over again.
I couldn't understand it.
And so my eyes were open, not after he got drafted, but I was there in Jacksonville when the Texans come.
He's playing without four offensive linemen.
He has Tankdale, a rookie receiver.
I don't even know if Nico Collins played that game, and he is lighting it up.
I mean, he is making dime after dime after dime.
And you're sitting here, we always talk about franchise quarterbacks being able to elevate those around him.
None of us thought that Houston, Texas would be competitive.
Nobody.
We expected them to go get washed, whitewalled, up and down the field.
And yet, he has this offense looking like a credible offense.
He hasn't turned the ball over, which is critical.
Doesn't make any sense.
Right.
So now.
I love Andrew Luck.
He was a turnover machine.
Right.
So now you're looking at a quarterback who's doing more with less, who has a lot of confidence.
He's humble.
He's bought in.
The people around him, because you've heard his teammates talk about, oh, the best thing
that ever happened was us getting the second pick because we got the right guy for us.
The Texans looked like they have a high-end quarterback.
And it's just one of those things in the draft.
We talk about it.
We go back and forth and all this.
But he was a really good play at Ohio State.
He was a good player his entire time at Ohio State.
Sometimes you just got to trust what you see on tape.
Yeah.
So, okay, now comes pessimistic Uncle Colin.
Oh, okay, negative Nancy.
All right.
So here's my thing with Jordan Love.
Okay.
So I am not going to judge him the same because he's been in camp three years.
This is a stable organization.
He's got everything C.J. Stroud doesn't.
So when Stroud, chaos, defensive coach, first time play caller, no.
And then he has, he gets 11 days to prepare.
Well, well, David Bocdiari wasn't there.
Well, well, Dobbs was and this guy.
I watched Green Bay coach him.
So Houston has no run game.
And they're like, throw it 50 times.
I mean, they don't care.
It's like, CJ, that tells me.
me at practice.
In the film room, they trust him.
When I watch the Packers coach, Jordan Love, I see lack of trust.
That's what I see is a commentator and a casual.
I would say that you may be on to something.
When someone has played as long as he played, meaning he's been to league for two,
three years, your expectation is that when he plays, you see more than what you've seen
from a rookie quarterback and C.J. Straub.
Jordan Love had solid first game.
He had a comeback against the Saints.
where you saw some flashes,
within the same issues that plagued him
his final season at Utah State,
we're beginning to see it.
Yep.
The turnovers.
And the turnovers are bad turnovers
because they're not,
oh, the ball was deflected.
No, they're just a bad bounce.
He's throwing it.
And I thought this version of the Packers
would be more ball control,
more run game, more play action,
use the tight ends and those things.
They haven't been able to do it,
but it's really hard when your quarterback turns it over.
So I'm concerned.
I'm concerned.
I'm not all ready to hit the panic button, but I'm concerned because it hasn't looked like what I think most of us thought it would look like when he took over.
Because he is a veteran quarterback.
You expect it.
You expect more from a guy who's been around, who's had a bunch of training camps, who's had some regular season experience.
He has to play better for this team to win.
There's a lot of successful people in America.
I'm always most impressed with people that overcome chaos.
early.
The opposite of trust fund.
And so when I look at Justin Fields, I'm like, well, the bears offensively have been
chaos my whole life, ownership, drafting.
They don't have a greatest all-time quarterback.
They don't have a greatest all-time receiver.
It is a defensive culture.
So I always, when I look at Justin Fields, say, I have to contextualize this franchise
doesn't do offense right.
And I had called him coming into the season a YouTube quarterback, a little like Sam Darno.
You give me a nine-minute clip.
You think Sam Darlowell's Pro Bowl.
But that's not the league.
It's layups.
Mahomes is great three times a game.
He does a lot of Michael Jordan mid-range jumpers.
He doesn't miss layups.
And so with Justin, I'm like, he's missing a lot of easy stuff.
And then the last two weeks, I'm like, is it coaching, scheme, clicking?
Something's working now.
What is it?
I think he boldly bet on himself.
I think when he put himself out there and all this stuff came out about the offense
and I've got to quit thinking and I'm feeling like a robot.
We basically felt like he was alluding to the fact that he had too much information.
And sometimes some of the worst things that you can do as a coach is overcoach.
Too much information.
So now instead of playing on instincts, you're thinking.
This was a guy who was, look, he was a really good high school player,
played really well at Ohio State.
He was a guy who had MLB aspiration, was a really good baseball player.
So he has A-level talent.
Oh, I mean, he fills out the uniform.
He has a-level talent.
He has skills.
tools, he has those things. For whatever reason, the scheme, the system, it wasn't working for him.
And I still would say that I don't know if the system and the scheme is the right fit.
I don't know if the coaching staff is the right fit for him, but he's talented enough.
The problem that he has is he's up against the clock.
Because right now the bears are holding the top two picks in the draft.
They have two quarterbacks that are coming in Caleb Williams and Drake May.
And so no matter how good Justin Fields looks, he has to look.
he has to be a better player than what we project Caleb Williams and Drake May to be at the next level.
And so he not only has to build on these strong performances, man, he has to dazzle us to the point that for the second year in a row,
the Chicago Bears would bypass a quarterback.
That is hard to do if they finish up there where they're in range to get a top quarterback to bypass a quarterback back-to-back years.
it means Justin Fields has to show and convince you that he is going to be special.
Well, and also, if you pass that quarterback up, that means within a year you have to pay Justin,
who has been to this point C minus.
So there's, I think there's almost, so I would trade one of the picks down and just get a boatload.
This is going to be the rare.
You could get two first multiple seconds because I think their roster needs that.
Their defense doesn't have a lot of personnel.
So I would trade one of them.
but the question is, I almost make this argument.
As an owner, I would be a non-meddling owner.
But I would think you'd have to go to the GM and just say, listen, trade one of them.
You have to.
But the other thing is, there's only two ways to win Super Bowls.
You either have him a Holmes level great guy.
There's six of them.
Or have a talented rookie on a rookie contract.
Yeah, so either way.
So if you get Drake May, even if he's not as good as you think, I get four years.
years of freebie. I'm getting closer to having to pay Justin.
So there's an argument that it's not just his play. If you don't think he's Mahomes,
Herbert, you have to move off him, just the structure of the cap and how it works.
I think more teams are going to have to think like that. Because now look at the New York
Giants. They paid Daniel Jones $40 million. And Daniel Jones is not Mahomes like in any way,
shape, or form. And so you're stuck as an albatross around the franchise's neck. So for Justin
fields, you talk about it's not just him saying, hey, I'm a good player. Look at me. I can do it.
Is he a great player? It's him versus how much you have to pay him versus what you could do
with the picks, with building it up. And everyone is looking at the San Francisco 49th.
You can take them to task for what they did with Trey Lance. Doesn't matter. Because what they
have is Brock Purdy, who's the perfect point guard in that offense. But you look at the rest of the
team, they may have the best tackling football in Trent Williams.
You can say they have the best offensive weapon in Christian McCaffrey.
You can talk about George Kittle being the best tied in in the game.
They have a lot of best.
Dick Bosa being the best path.
Fred Warren is a lot of the number ones at their respective positions playing with the
rookie quarterback so you can pay all those guys.
Bucky, I was saying this.
If you had DAC playing for them, you could not have made the Christian McCaffrey move
and you couldn't keep both those linebackers.
No.
And you also couldn't have gotten hard grave from.
Philly. So if you take the D-Linman, one of your linebackers and Krishonoff, that's a good roster.
It's not this. To me, let's talk that. I think the Niners roster, when Seattle didn't have
to pay Ross for three years, four years, when Max Unger was the ninth best Seahawk and he was a
Pro Bowl center, that was a pro, but they could have beaten Pro Bowl teams. I think that's the only
roster that compares in the last decade to this roster. Now, Baltimore, when they had Ray,
The goose. McAllister,
Reed.
Defensively, that was ridiculous.
Yeah, different time, though.
But this right now,
so if we think about it,
this might be the way that you have to do it.
Because we talk about quarterbacks.
How many Pat Mahomes?
How many guys, how many top five quarterbacks are out there?
My entire life, they're six.
Right.
How many guys are out there?
Even when we think about, like, the top five in whatever order,
Mahomes and Allen and Burrow and Jalen Hertz and those guys,
Justin Herbert.
Okay, so then you get the rest of them.
So when you look at the,
way the Niners are built. It is almost collegiate in nature in terms of the quarterback.
Because if you have a quarterback on a Ricky deal, it allows you to go and spend all the money
around. You just got to make sure that you have the right quarterback. The problem that the Niners
will have down the line is, how much do you value Brock Purdy? And what are you willing to pay
Brock Purdy? Because the more he wins, the more...
His representatives are going to say, hey, look, he's a $50 million quarterback. But when you
pay him 50 million, you no longer
can give him the luxury
items that are around to him.
I'll tell you, elite. Lamar's
elite, explosiveness.
Herbert sighs and arm.
Alan. Jalen Hertz.
I can see special.
I think Brock Purdy's good.
They don't have a huge arm.
It doesn't move like Alan.
So I don't think it's that hard to deduce.
Brock Pretty's good. I'm not sure he's very good.
He's good. No question he's good.
But there's Trevor Lawrence.
I saw him make throws last week in London.
I could hear him through the TV.
Oh, he's super talented.
He's super talented.
I think there's six guys, seven.
They are.
So the thing about Brock Purdy and if I'm as representatives, you come back, like,
okay, well, we've seen you try and do this without him.
We saw, like the Ross is Sotel.
You had Trey Lance.
It didn't look like this.
You've had other guys, Jim McIroppalo, it kind of looked at,
but it didn't look like this.
And so that's the thing.
What is the secret sauce behind Brock Purdy?
That's what every NFL executive
that's where they're studying because people want to know
how has he been able as Mr. Irrelevant
to come into league in that situation have success.
Yes, Calshanahan and the system and those things,
but you also have to give pretty credit
for being able to do what he's been able to do
as a player that came in.
Look, seventh round pick to have this offense looking like that
is impressive.
Good stuff, my friend.
Thanks, man.
