Starting point is 00:00:00 This is an I-Heart podcast. Guaranteed Human. Another podcast from some SNL, late-night comedy guy, not quite. Unhumor me with Robert Smygel and friends. Me and hilarious guests from Bob Odenkirk to David Letterman help make you funnier. This week, my guest, SNL's Mikey Day and head writer, Streeter Seidel, help an a cappella band with their between songs banter.
Starting point is 00:00:23 Where does your group perform? We do some retirement homes. Those people are starving for banter. Listen to humor me with Robert Smigel and friends on the IHeart radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. A win is a win. A win is a win. I don't care what I'm saying.
Starting point is 00:00:38 Yep, that's me, Clifford Taylor the 4th. You might have seen the skits, my basketball and college football journey, or my career in sports media. Well, now I'm bringing all of that excitement to my brand new podcast, The Clifford Show. This is a place for raw, unfiltered conversations with athletes, creators, and voices that not only deserve to be heard, but celebrated. So let's get to it. Listen to The Clifford Show on the IHard Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcast.
Starting point is 00:01:04 And for more behind the scenes, follow at Clifford and at TikTok's podcast network on TikTok. On The Look Back at it podcast. From 1979, that was a big moment for me. 84 is big to me. I'm Sam J. And I'm Alex English. Each episode, we pick a year, unpack what went down, and try to make sense of how we survived it. With our friends, fellow comedians, and favorite authors.
Starting point is 00:01:25 Like Mark Lamont Hill on the 80s. 84 was a wild. It was a wild year. I don't think there's a more important year for black people. Listen to look back at it on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Thanks for listening to The Heard podcast. Be sure to catch us live every weekday from 12 to 3 Eastern, 9 to noon Pacific on Fox Sports Radio and FS1. Find your local station for the herd at Fox Sports Radio.com or stream us live every day on the iHeartRadio app by searching Herd.
Starting point is 00:01:56 Now let's get this party started. listening to Fox Sports Radio. I like when Eric Mangini disagrees with me, and he was listening to my previous rant, and he wants to take me to task. Like a surrogate father, he's going to come in with a ruler here and say, listen, young man, you're wrong. Fox Sports analysts. So I don't like, I don't, listen, I understand.
Starting point is 00:02:20 I've seen this before. And I was talking to somebody else about this years ago, and that sometimes the coordinator is a hot shot, and they want to get a job. and they want to show off a little. And, you know, coaches are like, in fact, this was Belichick years ago, told a friend of mine this about Josh McDaniels. He goes, I love Josh. He's trying to show the world how good he is.
Starting point is 00:02:43 I'm trying to win games. So you, and there is some truth to that, you probably dealt with that as a head coach. So you thought McCarthy's basic premise was okay. Yeah, absolutely. You've got to take a global view as the head coach. and this happens with coordinators and what Bill was saying with Josh at the time I could see that happening happening too and it's it's not necessarily the fault of the coordinator they're thinking in terms of
Starting point is 00:03:11 what's best for the offense sure and also what what looks best for me and there'll be times where they want splash plays they want things that are exciting going to be talked about that that may be unnecessary risks and not not the best complementary football I I I I liked what Mike McCarthy said. And when you look at the Cowboys, they were best when they ran the ball first over the course of Dax's career. When they ran the ball first and then let him build off of that. They've got two offensive tackles that are much better run blockers than they are past blockers.
Starting point is 00:03:45 Fair, that's fair. And remember that whole period where we went with Let Dack Cook, you know, building off the let Russ cook. And then every time he's thrown over 50 times, he's got a terrible win-loss record. Yeah. So for him to say he wanted to be a run first and not worry about getting someone a head coaching job, that makes total sense to me. Now, I think your point is, too, their tackles are better run blockers than pass blockers.
Starting point is 00:04:12 Tyron Smith at this point, probably has a year left. This is probably the last year. That's a fair point. So I saw this survey came out from players about facilities, nutrition, strength training, NFL, 1,300 players graded their teams. Arizona did not do well. The commanders. And by the way, I don't love the owner for either.
Starting point is 00:04:37 How big of a deal is it for free agents to have nice facilities? Arizona and Washington graded terribly. Does it matter? I love the survey. I wish this survey was around when I was head coach. I think I would have graded out poorly in a couple of categories, but being able to get that feedback not only from your team, but how your team rates versus other teams,
Starting point is 00:05:00 it always amazed me that when you've got a salary cap as big as you have in the NFL, that you'd skimp on any of the services related to the players. Why wouldn't you invest as much as you possibly could during the course of the week for your $200-plus million dollar salary-cap players? And you're going to skimp on whether it's meals or treatments or the size or the quality of the classrooms or take your pick. you should have the best of the best so that you're maximizing your teaching and learning potential for your guys. I think it's great. I'm glad they're doing it. Um, yeah, so it's like a job review.
Starting point is 00:05:39 No, but everybody's uncomfortable with it, but you probably need to know what you're not good at. But Colin also makes it easier for you to go to your owner and say, look, this is where we're ranking. It's going to be hard to bring guys in here. And there's a, you may have to pay a premium to get a free agency because you rank poorly. So instead of paying what market value is, you've got to pay over that. And no owner wants to hear that either. Arizona literally graded F minus on nutrition. It's like they're in there serving half and half and pecans. Who gets an F minus nutrition?
Starting point is 00:06:13 Impossible. I didn't even know that was possible. Okay. So listen, sometimes something happens and it's unique and it's rare. And I mean, I grew up in the Northwest. Sometimes you get a sunny day in February. that's not really what it is, but you get them. And I look at all these small quarterbacks.
Starting point is 00:06:30 And the last four small quarterbacks in the first round, Johnny Mansell, Kyler, Baker, and Tua. How's it working out? I looked at a picture, video of Bryce Young, walking next to a tied end, and I said, that's not what Peyton Manning and Dallas Clark look like. I don't like it. You tell me, five, ten, and a half, one-90, it bothers me. Yeah, when you're talking about the first round
Starting point is 00:06:52 and you're talking about the top end of the first round, or you're talking about the first draft pick overall, you want to be able to check every single box. And that doesn't mean that smaller quarterbacks haven't been very productive. It doesn't mean they can't be successful. But going into it, drafting that high with a guy that's got to overcome a disadvantage like that,
Starting point is 00:07:16 it's hard to get your head around, and it's hard to advocate for that. And it's not just the height and seeing over guys. But it's also, he's not got a big frame. He's got kind of a slight frame, too. Yeah. So the amount of hits that he's going to take from big men on a consistent basis, the odds of getting injured, I think, go up as well.
Starting point is 00:07:38 I can see Bryce watching this and think. Could you stop showing the same four-second clip over and over? But, you know, Russell Wilson gets drafted in the later rounds because of height, and that's usually what happens is you're going to take a chance on a guy, but you don't want to be taking a chance on a guy with the number one overall traffic. So I started talking about something about five weeks ago and everybody freaked
Starting point is 00:08:01 out and now everybody's talking about it. Once again, we're willing to talk about this uncomfortable stuff is two years into, I saw Jalen Hertz and Josh Allen make huge leaps. I got two years of Justin Fields and I haven't seen a huge leap. And you can say the O line's not great, but it's ranked
Starting point is 00:08:19 14th and the Giants is 32nd. And you can say the receivers aren't good, but Cole commits better than the Giants' tight end. Darnell Mooney would start for the Giants and Chase Claypool's clearly competent, and their backs are serviceable. It ain't great, but the Giants offense outside of Sequin Barclay, they got nothing. And they won a playoff game. So my takeaway is, I got two years here.
Starting point is 00:08:42 You've got to take a phone call on Justin Fields. I think I'd keep him. I think he can work. You have the pick. You're the Bears. What would you be doing right now if you just lost 10 games in a row? he was part of that losing streak, and you had the number one pick. You've got to look at every possible quarterback,
Starting point is 00:08:59 and you've got to look as to whether or not you can upgrade, and it's not a knock on the splash plays that Justin Fields made and the way that he's been productive, but your point at the top is absolutely right. Where's the growth? Where is the curve or the arrow pointing up to where you can say, in a couple years from now, this guy is going to be a significantly better passer.
Starting point is 00:09:26 So now you're going to put another year into it and you see marginal growth. That's not going to be good enough to win on a consistent basis. And when you run as much as he does, it's the same thing we see with all these running quarterbacks. They're bound to get hurt because of the amount of hits they take. It's just not sustainable. So I would look at every quarterback, see if one makes sense. And then, you know, if you're going to move or stay with them, try to leverage the pick as best you can. It's just hard when there's not an elite quarterback can get as much as you should for that number one overall pick.
Starting point is 00:10:06 So you're on the, you're on the, you do whatever Aaron Rogers wants and you just pay them and you take care of it. And I get that. No, no, I'm not on that. Green Bay was on that. And they did that already. So they're stuck now. Okay. So, Kyler's different.
Starting point is 00:10:24 Aaron, there are quarterbacks that Russell Wilson, by the way, is, you know, some people think in authentic, overly optimistic, blah, blah, blah. Not everybody's Brady. Like, we've got to get over it. Like, these are human beings, not human doings. They have different personalities. But would you, this is the one part that's funny. I say, if I told my wife, like we were going through some problems,
Starting point is 00:10:45 and I said, I'm going to go to Vegas with the boys for four days. when I get back, I should be closer to a decision on if I want to keep the marriage going. She'd be like, it's over. When you go in a retreat and you come back after a retreat and you're like, you know, I'm closer to making a decision. Isn't that kind of sticking it to the packet? Just a little bit. Just wouldn't you feel a little bit like it's like, brother, four days in a dark room.
Starting point is 00:11:11 You can't get a decision after that, right? What do you make of that? Well, I think that Aaron Rogers probably. felt like, okay, I was the MVP of the league, you draft a quarterback in the first round. Isn't that sticking it to me a little bit? And then when they traded away his buddies, isn't that without talking to him? Isn't that sticking? I think he's got a little bit of that in him, Colin, where, as we know, if there's disharmony in a marriage, usually it's not one partner responsible for the whole thing. It's both sides. Now, with Aaron's talent and with
Starting point is 00:11:48 the things that he's been able to do, you're going to live with some moodiness. You're going to live with some of the stuff that he's done. Green Bay hasn't experienced life without an elite quarterback. And I think if they had, they would be even more patient with Aaron Rogers and his retreat in darkness. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:12:10 Yeah. Would you? You're not buying that, Colin? Well, I think it's all part of the discussion. Would you, because I got kids. I can't do that stuff. I got too many things moving. Would you go on a four-day retreat at this point in your life?
Starting point is 00:12:23 Would you do a darkness retreat? I don't think I would do a darkness retreat, but that trip to Vegas when my boy sounds pretty good. I would probably sign up for that. That could lead to darkness. Believe me. Too much rum and there'll be darkness. Okay.
Starting point is 00:12:41 Eric, good seeing you. Great seeing you too, Colin. All right. Would you do the darkness retreat, J-Mack? No, I don't think I could handle it. Oh, that's your big... I'm a vocal guy. I like to be around people.
Starting point is 00:12:53 I need to play sports. I need to be texting folks. And I need to update my Instagram. I can't go on a darkness for 40s. Very vulnerable there. Be sure to catch live editions of the herd weekdays in noon Eastern, 9 a.m. Pacific. On Fox Sports Radio, FS1, and the I-Hard Radio app. Imagine an Olympics where doping is not only legal, but encouraged.
Starting point is 00:13:15 It's the enhanced games. call it grotesque, others say it's unleashing human potential. Either way, the podcast's Superhuman documented it all, embedded in the games and with the athletes for a full year. Within probably 10 days, I'd put on 10 pounds.
Starting point is 00:13:31 I was having trouble stopping the muscle growth. Listen to Superhuman on the I-Hard Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. A win is a win. A win is a win. I don't care which I'm saying. Yep, that's me. Clipper Taylor the 4th.
Starting point is 00:13:47 You might have seen the skits, the reactions, my journey from basketball to college football, or my career in sports media. Well, somewhere along the way, this platform became bigger than I ever imagined. And now I'm bringing all of that excitement to my brand new podcast, The Clifford Show. This is a place for raw, unfiltered conversations with some of your favorite athletes, creators, and voices that not only deserve to be heard, but celebrated. One week, I'll take you behind the scenes of the biggest moments in sports and entertainment, and the next we'll talk about life, mental health, purpose,
Starting point is 00:14:17 and even music. The Clifford Show isn't just a podcast. It's a space for honest conversations, stories that don't always get told, and for people who are chasing something bigger. So if you've ever supported me or you're just chasing down a dream, this is right where you need to be.
Starting point is 00:14:32 Listen to The Clifford show on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcast. And for more behind the scenes, follow at Clifford and at TikTok Podcast Network on TikTok. Do you remember when Diana Ross double-tapped Little Kim's boobs at the VMAs? Or when Kanye said that George Bush didn't like black people. I know what you're thinking.
Starting point is 00:14:52 What the hell does George Bush got to do a little kill? Well, you can find out on the Look Back at it podcast. I'm Sam J. And I'm Alex English. Each episode, we pick it here, unpack what went down, and try to make sense of how we survived it. Including a recent episode with Mark Lamont Hill, waxing all about crack in the 80s.
Starting point is 00:15:10 To be clear, 84 is big to me, not just because of crack. I'm down to talk about crack on day, but just so you all right, Yeah, yeah. Literally. But just say y'all know. I mean, at this point, Mark, this is the second episode where we've discussed crack.
Starting point is 00:15:20 So I'm starting to see there's a through line. We also have AIDS on the table right now. Now you're finishing that sentence. Yes. I don't think there's a more important year for black people. Really? Yeah.
Starting point is 00:15:33 For me, it's one of the most important years for black people in American history. Listen to look back at it on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. All right, J. Mack with a news. No. Turn on the news. This is the herd line news.
Starting point is 00:15:49 All right, so we got some breaking news here on LeBron James, and it's not great, comments. So, according to Dave McBenovan of ESPN, initially the report was, oh, LeBron, they'll reassess in two weeks. Okay? Now we're hearing, according to Dave McBenham and ESPN, LeBron suffered a right foot tendon injury. Uh-oh. He will be reevaluated in approximately three weeks. Okay, season's over. So I'm looking at the calendar here
Starting point is 00:16:16 And if you're saying, based on this Thursday, he's going to miss at least 10 games. Okay, so give me the 10 games. Minnesota. Where? Oh, they're at home against Minnesota. That's a double you. Chris Fitz just sat here yesterday.
Starting point is 00:16:32 Well, I think they can win that. Okay. They're at home against Golden State this weekend. That's a double. That's an L. Curry may be returning. Yeah, that's an L. They are at home against Memphis.
Starting point is 00:16:42 I'd go L there. They are at home against Toronto. Toronto. Probably a W. They better be able to beat Toronto. Home against the Knicks. That's a game I wanted to go to. That's a great game.
Starting point is 00:16:52 That's a go-either-way game. It's a Sunday game. That's a go-e-either-way game. I won't pencil on a W or else. At New Orleans, they've had trouble, but no zion. New Orleans, yeah. Okay. At Houston.
Starting point is 00:17:04 A W. All right. They got four W. Averse. Here against Luca and Kyrie on the 17th. I think they'd win that. All right. Maybe season's not over.
Starting point is 00:17:14 So one, two, three. I have five wins, a pass, and two L's. That's a really workable schedule. You're the 11th seed right now. It's not like they're the 7th seed trying to hang on. They're trying to get in. And remember, you're losing ground because Golden State's ahead of you. Minnesota's ahead of you.
Starting point is 00:17:30 Memphis is ahead of you. So a lot of these losses are like dual losses. Are they playing Minnesota tonight? No, Friday night. So tomorrow night. That's a fairly big game. Yeah. Well, that's probably why they rested Anthony Davis.
Starting point is 00:17:42 Are you going to recant that Anthony Davis? take from earlier? Now he's fresh as a daisy going against. I don't think Carl Anthony Towns is back, but Rudy Gobert and Anthony Edwards. Minnesota's in a win now most. It's a revenge game for DeAngelo Russell if he can if you could get healthy. Bottom line, Colin, I don't think they're getting into playoffs. I feel not as good today as I did. But I will say, I will say this. The trade deadline stuff, they are a better, like when you watch them last, and again, Oklahoma said he's not very good. But they have guys that can actually hit shots now. They've got a couple guys that can shoot.
Starting point is 00:18:17 So let's spin it forward. They did not three weeks ago. LeBron doesn't return. Lakers missed the playoffs. Oh, I would have moved off AD. Okay, no, you would have, but now the all season's here. Yeah, I'd move off. You're trading Anthony Davis. Absolutely. Okay. Cross my fingers, he stays healthy, has a great last month and move. I would have done that before the year, and I would have been right, and we've got
Starting point is 00:18:35 good pieces and we'd be a playoff team. I hope you're not bringing in Kyrie. This is also the reality of what is, we've got to be honest about this in LeBron's career. This is what he is now. He's going to miss a month or two because he's just breaking down. Yeah. That's what happens when you're 38. He's 10 minutes in NBA history and playoffs. This is LeBron. Look, you're getting 50 games out of LeBron. It's a good thing he didn't quit like Michael Jordan did when he was like 35. Or we would have been robbed of three incredible years of LeBron. Like I like half seasons of LeBron, even though he's hurt. The guy's a Marvel.
Starting point is 00:19:05 He's averaging like what, 30 a game? No, he's great. He's a remarkable player, but he's a 50 game player now. You know, if I was LeBron, I mean, LeBron's one of those guys where I'd play him as much as I could, but he should be playing 26 minutes a night. That's what he should be playing. Yeah, I don't know that you can play him 26 minutes a night. He's one of the highest paid guys. Well, who cares? I mean, the bottom line is I want him on the floor for 60 games, not 41. So I'll play him 26 a night. And then I'll trade A.D. And I'll get a younger player. Who's that? I'll go. I'll go. By the way, I'll throw it at you. Don't tell me. Oh, no, no. What if the Warriors
Starting point is 00:19:40 lose and they wake up and go, okay, we got it, it's over. The dynasty's over. And you go, if you're the Lakers and you're like, okay, we'll take Clay Thompson and give us one of your young guys, Cominga, start moving pieces, and they take Anthony Davis because they could do Steph and Draymond and Anthony and Wiggins. If the Warriors lose, just call down and just say, we'll give you some size with Anthony Davis, a guy who can give you 25 without designing plays, make you more. much better defensively against Biggs. Why wouldn't you go after Damian Lillard over Clay Thompson? Because they're already too small.
Starting point is 00:20:16 They already have a million guards and they're too small. What they don't have, Wiseman didn't work. They got cave on, they have no offense from their big. And AD's not a guy you have to design plays for. I could see Golden State. If Golden State disappointed in the playoffs, Steve Kerr and Bob Meyer are not going to sit around and run it back. They'll make a move.
Starting point is 00:20:35 Wiggins down to the Lakers. Anthony Davis for Wiggins and maybe Moody. I can see that. One of the young guys, maybe a Kaminga and Wiggins for a Davis, because you get size defense. Lakers fans are going to be outraged today, but I just want to remind everybody, LeBron got AD to the Lakers and they won a championship.
Starting point is 00:20:53 LeBron got them a title. So just be happy. I don't want to hear this trade LeBron stuff. I already getting texts. We got to move off LeBron. Settle down. Next story, Joel Embed, and Beed, speaking of underwhelming,
Starting point is 00:21:03 Joel Embed has been vocal in the past and wanting how much winning an MVP would mean. You know, he fell short the last two years. They gave it to Yokin. Recently, Embeded sat down with Fox Sports's Melissa Rowland and talked about how he has shifted that mentality. What I can control is to try to win a championship. And I feel like that's the only way I'm going to get that respect. So that's where all the focus is.
Starting point is 00:21:28 That's right. You know, can I just say this? Awards are overrated. Heisman trophies, MVP's coach of the year. I couldn't give a rip about that. I couldn't tell you how many MVP's Brady has today. I know the rings. I think awards are just a waste of time.
Starting point is 00:21:42 Once Westbrook won an MVP, I'm out. Let's stop. I mean, Phil Jackson won how many coach of the year awards? One, two. We just did this yesterday with the NFL. It's so hard to win a title. Like, in the NBA, there's a good chance. Joel and B.
Starting point is 00:21:57 May never make the NBA finals. Let's less win a title. Just make the finals. One of my least favorite things, it's always a sign that you're lazy in the media. Instead of developing a topic, like week, three of the college football season, you go to a Heisman column. Nobody cares. Win games. Nobody in Alabama's worry about Heisman. They want to win, they want to beat Georgia and Auburn.
Starting point is 00:22:18 I just, I don't care about awards. In any industry, I don't care. We all know who can play. If M. B'd won 12 MVP's and never got to the finals, I'm not talking about him in 20 years. He's irrelevant. Carl Malone, we don't talk about him. You got a bunch of awards. We know we talk about MJ. Still, Steph Curry, we're going to talk about forever. That's a guy we can talk about. KD forever. I don't totally disagree with you. Not an awards guy.
Starting point is 00:22:45 To boil it down to only titles matters, then it just... No, I'm not talking about a lot of dudes. I'm not saying your body of work doesn't matter. But I'm saying first is championship. Second's your body of work. MVP's are based on as a quarterback. Your coordinator, your coach. Mahomes is not winning the MVP's with a defensive head coach.
Starting point is 00:23:07 I mean, Andy Reed is part of that because Andy Reid is the great play designer. When you go over to the Red Zone to the Super Bowl against a good defense and you have two touchdown where nobody's within 20 yards, that ain't Mahomes. That's Andy Reid. But a lot of awards is something, I think Embed has it backwards. You can control what you win, all NBA, all-star, MVP's. You can't control the roster. You cannot control the players around you. Joel Embed's sitting around here with James Harden, Tyrese, Tobias Harris.
Starting point is 00:23:35 It's not a great roster. They have good players. Okay. Do I think any less of Jalen Brunson for not being an All-Star? He's been a home run. Who gives a rip? That invalidates All-Star. If you don't think Jalen Brunson has been an All-Star, it invalidates all this nonsense. Joel Embed is like an MVP candidate, always on a contender. Jalen Brunson is like a really, really good player. A really good player. I think he was a second-round pick. We like him. I like Jailen Brunson.
Starting point is 00:24:00 M-Bid's in a different stratosphere, Colin. He wants to be talked of as like one of the great big men of all time. Well, he ain't going to be Elijah won because he's not winning two titles. I don't even know that he's... Is he David Robinson? Who? Joel Embed. Not to this point. I don't think so.
Starting point is 00:24:14 He probably ends up better than Patrick Ewing, who was one of my favorite players ever. Well, he's, he's, I would say he is Patrick Ewing. He did make the finals. I mean, at this point, M. Bid is Patrick Ewing. That's what he is. He's not close to Duncan and he's not David Ruff. No, he's not Duncan. He's not a Keme, absolutely not.
Starting point is 00:24:30 He's not close to Shaq. Right now, he is... Who did you say, who was it? David Robinson? No, no, he's not there. Who was the one before that? Patrick Ewing. Yeah, no, no, he's Patrick Ewing.
Starting point is 00:24:40 There's nothing wrong with that. Iconic, great Eastern Conference, great score, known for offense. So, Duralum Bede is one of the 12 to 15 greatest centers in the history of basketball. That is a great honor. Absolutely. Russell, Kareem, Wilt, Akeem, Shack, Duncan's a four. Yeah, yeah. David Robinson's probably in that group.
Starting point is 00:25:03 Is Moses Malone count? Yeah, he had some really strong years. Okay. So, I mean, listen, that's a great honor, Joel. Yeah, that's great honor. Now, go try to win some games with this roster. Mori cooked up and a bad coach. Oh, sorry.
Starting point is 00:25:13 If I told you MB, 12 MVP's no title or one title and one MVP, what would he take? I would take the championship and the one MVP. Wouldn't even be close. Yeah, championships, that's what you play for, you know. That's it. That's what I play for as a dad life athlete. All right. Final story.
Starting point is 00:25:31 I think we're doing Daniel Jones here. All right. No, no, no. We're going to do Chris Ball. Yeah, let's do Chris Ballard. A lot of buzz around the course. moving up to maybe draft a quarterback. They currently are at four.
Starting point is 00:25:40 Chris Ballard made it clear that they won't trade up if they don't think they need to. To move up, there's got to be a guy worthy of it, okay? I know everybody in America is going to say, like, this is what's great right now. Everybody has just automatically stamped that you've got to move up to one to get it right. I don't know if I agree with that. I don't. But that's going to be the narrative. And that's okay.
Starting point is 00:26:09 You've got to write something. You've got to keep the news flowing. But I don't necessarily know if that's the, I don't know if that's the right course of business. When we meet as a staff and we say, okay, this is what we need to do. This is the guy for the next 10 to 15 years and we think he's the right guy. Sure, we'll do it. But who's to say we won't get one at four?
Starting point is 00:26:32 Here's a great point. There's a team in the NFL that has not moved up and they've just been super patient. And they have landed in the last three or four drafts, Derwin, James, Roshan, Slater, and Justin Herbert. In all three of those, those are Hall of Fame-level elite players, and they've never moved up. The truth is, overwhelmingly, in the history of the NFL, you're way better off moving down in the first round.
Starting point is 00:26:59 No, Mahomes, obviously, they moved up. But the numbers would tell you, moving down to the smarter play than moving up. And, you know, Mahomes is obviously worth it. I don't think there's a player in this draft. in my opinion, worth moving up for, but I could see Houston saying, we're so bad. Let's just go get Bryce Young for two years. Let's just see what we got. I get it.
Starting point is 00:27:20 I bet you Chris Ballard met with, huddled with his crew before taking the podium. And you know what my takeaway is from that? Hey, Bears, we're not offering you anything to move up. We're not. So don't try to get a bunch of picks out of us. We're not moving up. That's what I took that from Ballard. And then it becomes, does Houston take a quarterback at two?
Starting point is 00:27:37 And you can laugh at them and say, go ahead, take Bryce Young. guys are going to win five, six games, maybe, and you ain't going to get the kid everybody wants from USC next year. I know we're talking about tanking in the NBA for Wembe Nyma. I really think we need to think about a strategic tank for some teams in the NFL next year to get the USC quarterback. Houston's very interesting. They just got a coach, D'Amico Ryan. They're not firing him after one year. They're not. Does Ballard have that same job security, though? He's been there for a while. They just tossed his guy Frank Reich. Well, Ursay has made that call. Jay Mack with the news.
Starting point is 00:28:15 Well, that's the news. And thanks for stopping by. The Herd Lye News. Be sure to catch live editions of the herd weekdays in noon Eastern 9 a.m. Pacific. This is Steve Kavino and Rich. And together we are Kavino and Rich. Kavino and Rich. Thanks, buddy.

It's the enhanced games. Some call it grotesque. Others say it's unleashing human potential. Either way, the podcast's Superhuman documented it all, embedded in the games and with the athletes for a full year.

Do you remember when Diana Ross double-tapped Little Kim's boobs at the VMAs? Or when Kanye said that George Bush didn't like black people.
Starting point is 00:30:46 I know what you're thinking. What the hell does George Bush got to do with Little Kim? Well, you can find out on the Look Back at it podcast. I'm Sam Jek. And I'm Alex English. Each episode, we pick a here, unpack what went down, and try to make sense of how we survived it. Including a recent episode with Mark Lamont Hill,
Starting point is 00:31:03 waxing all about crack in the 80s. To be clear, 84 is big to me, not just because, of crack. I'm down to talk about crack on day, but just so y'all know. I mean, at this point, Mark, this is the second episode where we've discussed crack. So I'm starting to see that there's a through line. We also have AIDS on the table right now. Thank you for finishing that sentence.
Starting point is 00:31:24 Yes. I don't think there's a more important year for black people. Really? Yeah. For me, it's one of the most important years for black people in American history. Listen to look back at it on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your So we're going to do This segment's called Tug of War.
Starting point is 00:31:42 So we're going back and forth on this stuff. We're not sure, should we do this? Should we do that in the NFL? There's a lot of questions. Free agency opens in two weeks. In two weeks, it's going to be a fireworks show in the show. By the way, Tug of War, didn't you love that at Field Day back in elementary school? Loved it.
Starting point is 00:31:56 Tug of war is so fun. Like, the strategy of anchoring down, sit low. But you were a little guy. I was a big guy. I was like one of the front guys because I'm like a leader in vocal and mousy. I was one of the very powerful. I'd like telling the guys what to do. Hey, you go there.
Starting point is 00:32:10 You know, we'll alternate sides. I was so dominant at field they do. They don't allow that anymore. I think it's to violate. You can't play dodge ball at recess. I can't. Gosh. What's happened to America?
Starting point is 00:32:21 Do something, will you? Okay. Here we go. Tugel. We're ready to go? Yeah, yeah, yeah. First up. Where will Aaron Rogers play next season?
Starting point is 00:32:29 Green Bay or any other team in the NFL? Okay, he's got a cat pit of $32 million. He's going to be a packer. Correct. Okay, he's 39 years old, $32 million bucks. Even Green Bay is working around
Starting point is 00:32:41 they're redoing some contracts. So it just doesn't make any sense. I think he'd be great in San Francisco, but it doesn't work. They got too many great, expensive players. Let's go to a real quarterback who's on the move. Derek Carr, where will he play in the NFC South? I know you like the Panthers or any other team in the NFL.
Starting point is 00:32:56 Okay. Sam Darnold, Desmond, Ritter, Kyle Trask, and Andy Dalton. He's going to go play in that division. He should. He's going to win that division if he goes. That's not there. Go back to the. other one, guys. Yeah, he's going to go
Starting point is 00:33:09 to the NFC South. That would really be great for his career, wouldn't it? Yes, it would. Be better with the Jets, but that's just me. Who are the Bears more likely to trade Justin Fields or the first pick in the draft? The number one overall pick, strangely,
Starting point is 00:33:25 has not been traded as much as you think. Jared Galt was the last one like six, seven years ago. So they're going to they're more likely to trade the number one overall pick. I think there's too many people that buy into Justin Fields.
Starting point is 00:33:43 I think the fans like him and the media's supporting him. So my takeaway is they're going to, they would move that pick. And I don't think there's a quarterback. Listen, when Justin Fields is big, strong, and athletic. He doesn't love the windy cold weather. Would you take Fields over any of those
Starting point is 00:33:58 quarterbacks at the top of this draft? That's a great question. That's a great question. Probably. CJ Stroud is very interesting. To me. The contract is the great equalizer, right? You know, like...
Starting point is 00:34:12 Yeah, but this is... I think he's a good prospect, and I think these guys are all good prospect. All right. New York Giants, will they sign Daniel Jones to a contract more or less than $40 million a year? It's got to be less because they want to play Sequin Barclay.
Starting point is 00:34:28 He did set records for completions and yards, it's got to be less. You can't pay Sequan and him over 40. You can't do it. There's too much money in the backfield. Can't do it. What kind of contract will Lamar Jackson get from the Ravens? Long-term contract or franchise?
Starting point is 00:34:45 I would franchise him. I get it. He's been hurt the end of last two years. The franchise is getting noisy. He may not like it. I mean, I like him, but in the current situation with injuries, I get it. Franchise him. That's what you're asking me what I think's going to happen.
Starting point is 00:35:02 I think they would have a contract already, but they want to franchise it. Yeah. Your favorite small quarterback is Bryce Young's comp closer to Drew Breeze or Kyler Murray? Drew Breeze. He's a pocket passer. He can move, but people forget early in Breeze's career, Bree's a good athlete. But I mean, Kyler's really known for his escapeability. I mean, Bryce is a 66% completion percentage guy who can move. But he's not going to chop it. I mean running around at that size. He's going to be letting go with the football. Yeah. And finally, is C.J. Stroud's comp closer to... I did not write this. Justin Herbert or Teddy Bridgewater?
Starting point is 00:35:40 Herbert. They're both big, move, big arms, and accurate. If C.J. Strauss being compared to Herbert, he's got to go number one. I don't think he's as good as Herbert. You're asking me who he compares to. He's accurate, reads the field well, can run. We saw against Georgia, which we'd never seen. Before the Georgia game, come on.
Starting point is 00:35:58 People were like, I don't even know if that guy's a top ten way. Before the Wisconsin game, Herbert never moved. And we were all like, oh, wait, Herbert's great. I think a lot of their games the same. Now, I think Herbert's sensation. Right, okay. But I think there's a lot of CJ. When I saw him run against Georgia, I said, oh, this is Justin Herbert again.
Starting point is 00:36:15 Where has this been all season? Yeah, it was like, oh, they didn't let him run. And I'm like, oh, wait a minute, they never let Herbert run in Oregon because they didn't have a backup. So CJ Straub's interesting. How about the Strout at 4 or Bryce Young at 2? What do you mean? Which would you rather take? Would you take Bryce Young's second overall or Stroud?
Starting point is 00:36:34 I would rather not have a top five pick. I'd rather have a good football team. I'd rather be the Bengals. I think there's more value in Stroud at 4. I don't, I just, I can't take Bryce Young second. I can't do it. I get it. Not gonna do it.
Starting point is 00:36:45 Not gonna do it. All right, we're done. We'll see you tomorrow. It's the herd. Another podcast from some SNL late night comedy guy, not quite.
