Starting point is 00:00:00 This is an I-Heart podcast. Guaranteed Human. Another podcast from some SNL, late-night comedy guy, not quite. Unhumor me with Robert Smygel and friends. Me and hilarious guests from Bob Odenkirk to David Letterman help make you funnier. This week, my guest, SNL's Mikey Day and head writer, Streeter Seidel, help an a cappella band with their between songs banter.
Starting point is 00:00:23 Where does your group perform? We do some retirement homes. Those people are starving for banter. Listen to humor me with Robert Smigel and friends on the IHeart radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. A win is a win. A win is a win. I don't care what I'm saying.
Starting point is 00:00:38 Yep, that's me, Clifford Taylor the 4th. You might have seen the skits, my basketball and college football journey, or my career in sports media. Well, now I'm bringing all of that excitement to my brand new podcast, The Clifford Show. This is a place for raw, unfiltered conversations with athletes, creators, and voices that not only deserve to be heard, but celebrated. So let's get to it. Listen to The Clifford show on the IHard Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcast.
Starting point is 00:01:04 And for more behind the scenes, follow at Clifford and at TikTok's podcast network on TikTok. On the Look Back at it podcast. From 1979, that was a big moment for me. 84 is big to me. I'm Sam J. And I'm Alex English. Each episode, we pick a year, unpack what went down, and try to make sense of how we survived it. With our friends, fellow comedians, and favorite authors.
Starting point is 00:01:25 Like Mark Lamont Hill on the 80s. 84 was a wild. It was a wild year. I don't think there's a more important year for black people. Listen to look back at it on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Thanks for listening to The Heard Podcast. Be sure to catch us live every weekday on Fox Sports Radio in noon to 3 Eastern, 9 a.m. to noon Pacific. Find your local station for the herd at Fox SportsRadio.com or stream us live every day on the IHartRadio app by searching Fox Sports Radio or FSRour.
Starting point is 00:01:58 You're listening to Fox Sports Radio. One of the most beautiful places in our fantastic country this time of the year is all those Rhode Island, Nantucket, Northeast Hamlets. I'm not going to tell you which one Albert Breer is at, but he is dressed appropriately and joining us live. Look at that. I am very, tried never to be jealous. but I he is he is five minutes away from a craft beer
Starting point is 00:02:31 so I can just tell that is the way to live there's probably a crab feast tonight somewhere in his future so I'll make this quick I'll make this quick for you first of all McDermott signs an extension my takeaway is they did it before camp to empower him with all the Stefan dig stuff because they can't bail on him or dead cat money I was surprised by the move for you Not really. I mean, I think you have to look at where the bills were before. Sean McDermott and Brandon Bean got there in 2017 and what a train racket was,
Starting point is 00:03:07 18 years without a playoff appearance. And yeah, they've gone through some turmoil over the course of the last year. And Colin, but if you look at it, like they survived a lot too. They were displaced twice by snowstorms. They went through all the stuff locally with the shooting at the supermarket. They went through the DeMar Hamlin thing. They went through injuries from a football standpoint, Von Miller, Josh Allen. And they still made it to the divisional round of the playoffs.
Starting point is 00:03:29 That was just a team that was emotionally spent at the end. So I think that's one piece of this. If you're looking at them globally, they've come so far. And then I think with Diggs, it's sort of what you signed up for. And if you look at the history of this, that's receivers, Colin, right? Usually someone else's problems that you inherit become your problems. It happened with Moss over and over again. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:03:48 It happened with Tremov. And so I don't think that the bills are caught off guard that this would eventually happen with Stiphan Diggs. I think now it's a matter of how manageable is it, and for how long is it manageable? But I think the relationships they have in that building with Stefan Diggs primarily with the quarterback should at least get them a little ways and helping them carry them through and put them on a track where they are right now, which is right in the middle of a Super Bowl window. In the last 72 hours, I'm not going to say if he's a current or former Packer, but it's somebody who knows it well. When asked about Jordan Love, he said three years,
Starting point is 00:04:25 I haven't seen wow. Doesn't mean you're bad, but we were hearing about Mahomes, you know, two weeks into camp. I went and looked up Burroughs headlines, first week at camp. I got four years of nothing except temporary expectations. Do you think they're, I mean, what are you hearing on Jordan Love? I mean, you can't find a piece of video, intense piece of practice video on him. If they wanted it out, it would be out.
Starting point is 00:04:52 Right. And I think part of this is like the expectation in Green Bay is it's the next Farver Rogers are bust, right? When maybe he doesn't really need to be that. And I think they wanted temper expectations. And if you remember, go back, like look in 2008, when Aaron Rogers became the quarterback, they drafted not one but two quarterbacks that year. They drafted Brian Brom and Matt Flynn in the second and sixth rounds. And so they've been down this road before.
Starting point is 00:05:18 A lot of those people that are in the building now, Mark Murphy, Brian Gutakunice were there in 2008. And I think a big part of this is managing expectations. And I would actually tell you that, you know, with the running game that they've built, with the defense that they've built, they've actually created an ideal situation for a young quarterback. There's still a lot of talent in that roster. The young receivers can come along. And so so much of this to me, Colin, is going to boil down to whether or not the guys who are coming back off of injuries or have had trouble staying healthy are going to make it. You know, it's David Bakhti at left tackle, Elkton Jenkins at Guard. Those two guys are going to be really important to Jordan Love.
Starting point is 00:05:51 and then the defense for Sean Gary, who was a defensive player of the year candidate, before he got hurt last year. I think that's what this is going to be more about than anything else. They can't ask Jordan Love to carry the team. They weren't asking Aaron Rogers to carry the team in 2008. They're hoping he grows into something. And I can just tell you, like, a year ago, two years ago, like they were worried about Jordan Love.
Starting point is 00:06:11 Part of the reason they did this, they moved on from Aaron Rogers when they did, is because they aren't as worried about Jordan Love anymore. That doesn't mean they think he can carry the team. But they think at the very least he can be a good boss. bus driver, and now it's about having all those pieces around him right. Yeah, they got two tight ends, two receivers in the back in the draft, so they have brought some young talent on the offensive side. What are you hearing about the Jets? It sounds like nobody in the league wants hard knocks. Like nobody. It used to be teams fought over it. Rex Ryan loved it. What are you
Starting point is 00:06:41 hearing about the Jets and hard knocks? Well, I think there's something global here too, Colin. I mean, if you look at it, like, teams are doing so much from an in-house perspective, right? Like, look at all the draft shows, the teams have, teams do great jobs with this. And you see, like, the demands they're putting on their coaches and players over the course of the season through the off season that those guys are already stretched. I think the other thing is, it used to be that this could be like a nice benefit for your players, but there are so many different ways now for players to get their names out there that maybe they don't need hard knocks to introduce themselves to the world quite like they did 10 or 15 years
Starting point is 00:07:13 ago. Yeah. I think those are factors with teams saying no, like, they're not being any teams that really want to do this. The Jets are going to be interesting because I think, you know, the fact that they're in New York, the fact that they've done it before, the fact that Aaron Rogers is there, those are all reasons why the NFL would want to do it. You know, I just, I got the sense talking to those guys. They're just not interested in it because there's already so much extra that they're going to be dealing with. Like everything that's going to come along with Aaron Rogers,
Starting point is 00:07:38 the spotlight that's going to be on them during training camp, I think they feel like they already have, you know, they've already sort of reached capacity as far as how much extra. going to have built into their summer and they don't want to add more. Finally, I forget your feeling on Sam Darnold, but, you know, there apparently no trade market at all for Trey Lance. Where are we at? Yeah. Is he number three now in that depth chart?
Starting point is 00:08:05 I think if Brock Purdy were unable to take the first snap of training camp, and that's certainly a possibility. He's on a track to play week one, but they're still building the strength in his arm back up. I think Sam Donald might take the first snap training camp. Now, it doesn't mean Trey Lance can't come back and work his way forward, but I think that they feel like they've already given this guy a lot of chances. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:08:28 And like here's the thing about it, Colin, right? Like the kid needs to play. And this is sort of the conundrum they're in. He just hasn't played a lot of football period since high school. He played one full year in college. The COVID year basically canceled his third year in college, right? He's redshirted as a freshman. And then he goes into the pros and he's redshirted his rookie year.
Starting point is 00:08:47 So we're talking about now, like a five-year period, if he includes last year when he was hurt, where he's only really played one full season of football. So he needs to see snaps. So the ideal thing would be to just throw him out there and live with his mistakes. But that's what the Niners were going to do last year. And that sort of ship has sailed. They know how good they are. They know the window they're in. They know they've got one of the most talented rosters in football.
Starting point is 00:09:11 And so at this point, they don't really feel like they can throw a season overboard in the name of Trey Lance's development. And especially if you're talking about, well, we may only need him for four or five weeks until Brock Purdy gets back. Now you're talking about something different. You're not talking about developing the best quarterback for the playoffs. You're talking about the guy who can keep you best to float for a month, right? That'd probably be Sam Darnold over Trey Lance at this point, right, even if Lance has the higher ceiling. So I think a lot of different things are going into this. And it makes it much different than last year when the idea was we're going to sink or swim with them.
Starting point is 00:09:43 We're going to ride out his bumps in September and October with the hope. that we get a better quarterback than we had by the time we get to January. Albert Breer, summering in the Northeast. Good seeing. You're going to call it? Yes, I do. I try not to be jealous, but that is a wonderful place. You definitely got us in the winter, that's for sure.
Starting point is 00:10:05 Not this winter in L.A., by the way, not this one. Good seeing you, bud. All right, thanks, Colin. You bet. Jets don't want to do that hard knocks either. I don't blame them. I don't blame them at all. They got stuck with a ton of primetime games.
Starting point is 00:10:20 The schedule's pretty rugged. Also, I know why Saul is a great-looking guy with big energy. Aaron's a rock star. His job is on the line, by the way. Head coach, GM, their jobs are on the line. They don't need hard knocks in there following them around. I mean, if HBO came to you and said, Colin, hey, we want to follow you and J-back around to do a thing on the herd.
Starting point is 00:10:40 Give us two months to follow you around. I'll be like, I mean, it's your show. Obviously, you get the call. But if you ask me, I'd say, no, I don't need that. Well, I think we've talked about this. Like the NFL network in its creation was a good idea. But now there's so much duplication on Fox and ESPN of NFL news that I've been told NFL owners, if somebody wrote a check, they'd sell it.
Starting point is 00:11:01 Now, the baseball network is more vital because networks like this don't talk a lot of regular season baseball. So those are unique opinions. And for baseball fans, MLB is really a destination, right? where NFL fans can get it anywhere. It's the same thing with Hard Knocks. Like eight, ten years ago, it was really incredible access. I get it all now. Players give me access.
Starting point is 00:11:24 It's called Instagram. I mean, they literally, players take me into their houses. Players take me into all sorts of places I didn't get 10 years ago. So now it's just inconvenient to teams. And I don't like the idea of this corporate entity hurting individual teams. You got jobs on the line in New York. I mean, the GM, I think, is safe. Robert Sala doesn't win with Aaron, he's in trouble.
Starting point is 00:11:47 I just, I'm not a huge fan of it. Be sure to catch live editions of the herd weekdays in noon Eastern, 9 a.m. Pacific. On Fox Sports Radio, FS1, and the IHeard Radio app. Imagine an Olympics where doping is not only legal, but encouraged. It's the enhanced games. Some call it grotesque. Others say it's unleashing human potential. Either way, the podcast's Superhuman documented it all,
Starting point is 00:12:11 embedded in the games and with the athletes for a full year. Within probably 10 days, I'd put on 10 pounds. I was having trouble stopping the muscle growth. Listen to Superhuman on the I-Hard Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. A win is a win. A win is a win. I don't care which I'm saying.
Starting point is 00:12:32 Yep, that's me, Cliver Taylor the 4th. You might have seen the skits, the reactions, my journey from basketball to college football, or my career in sports media. Well, somewhere along the way, this platform became bigger than I ever imagined. And now I'm bringing all of that excitement to my brand new podcast, The Clifford Show. This is a place for raw, unfiltered conversations with some of your favorite athletes, creators, and voices that not only deserve to be heard, but celebrated.
Starting point is 00:12:58 One week, I'll take you behind the scenes of the biggest moments in sports and entertainment, and the next we'll talk about life, mental health, purpose, and even music. The Clifford Show isn't just a podcast. It's a space for honest conversations, stories that don't always get told, and for people who are chasing something bigger. So, if you've ever supported me or you're just chasing down a dream, this is right where you need to be. Listen to The Clifford Show on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcast. And for more behind the scenes, follow at Clifford and at TikTok Podcast Network
Starting point is 00:13:29 on TikTok. Do you remember when Diana Ross double-tap Little Kim's boobs at the VMAs? Or when Kanye said that George Bush didn't like black people. I know what you're thinking. What the hell does George Bush got to? I do a little Kim. Well, you can find out on the Look Back at it podcast. I'm Sam Jay. And I'm Alex English. Each episode, we pick it here, unpack what went down, and try to make sense of how we survived it.
Starting point is 00:13:52 Including a recent episode with Mark Lamont Hill waxing all about crack in the 80s. To be clear, 84 is big to me, not just because of crack. I'm down to talk about crack on day, but just so you all know. I mean, at this point, Mark, this is the second episode where we've discussed crack. So I'm starting to see that there's a through line. We also have age. on the table right now. Thank you for finishing that sentence.
Starting point is 00:14:15 I don't think there's a more important year for black people. Really? Yeah. For me, it's one of the most important years for black people in American history. Listen to look back at it on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. J. Mack with the News. No, no, no, no. Turn on the news.
Starting point is 00:14:34 This is the herd line news. Let's stick in the NFL. We're getting close to training camps. opening and several top veteran running backs are still on sign. We've already heard from Sequin Barclay and Najee Harris earlier this month regarding the disrespect to the running back position. Now Melvin Gordon, best known for his fumbling with the Chargers, is the latest to speak out on running backs.
Starting point is 00:14:57 Here's what he had to say. It's just so tough for running backs right now, man. You have a lot of running backs that's out there. We just don't get no love. It's literally the worst position to play in the field right now. you know, it literally sucks. You know, I'm just staying ready, man, because I know what I can do.
Starting point is 00:15:14 I know once I get in camp, I can turn some heads. I just, I know what I need to do. Yeah, it's a reality of it. I mean, there's a lot of, we should say this. Whereas running backs are less important, receivers have never been more important because of rule changes. It's like anything else. The changes of rules or legislation can change all of our lives.
Starting point is 00:15:35 And receivers, left tackles, quarterbacks and edge rushers have never been more important and richer. Running backs, linebackers, interior alignment, and safeties have never been less relevant. The game has changed. So I still do believe that if your quarterback is a B quarterback, Kirk Cousins, then there's value at running back. Not as much with a star quarterback, but I think Dak, if Tony Pollard went down, Zeeke's gone, he's not the same quarterback.
Starting point is 00:16:04 He needs a run game. Yeah, it's weird. You know how the media has shown. shifted over the last two decades, right? Newspapers were so relevant. I mean, that ship has been sinking now for a while, and media is changing. So what do you do? You were in media.
Starting point is 00:16:16 You've got to adapt. And some of these running backs, like, is it too late in their career for them to discover, hey, man, I got to be able to catch pass out of the backfield? I got to block. Hell, maybe I become a special teams guy to prolong my career. You've got to figure out something, or you just won't be in the league. Yeah, first of all, I think Matt Slater has been playing 20 years in the league in special teams. There's a lot of way.
Starting point is 00:16:36 If you're coachable, if you can pick up a blitz. Listen, the average team carries four running backs. There is room for you. Three of those guys will get seven figures. You know, but some of it is, and it just happens. Like there's just some jobs. Didn't Julian Edelman, wasn't he the one who was a college quarterback? And then he came out and they were like, dude, you're not a quarterback.
Starting point is 00:16:57 He's like, all right, I'll be a receiver. And then he pivots to a receiver and then becomes like an awesome player. Like, you like to say this phrase, but see around corners and see what's coming. and I mean, I don't know, like, Karim Hunt, he can't really pivot to lineback. But Alvin Camaro was super valuable as Drew Brees aged. So if you have a B quarterback or an older quarterback, and that's half the league, you still have value. I mean, you know, it's not like running backs aren't getting paid. What's happened in Minnesota is Dalvin Cook's had injuries.
Starting point is 00:17:28 If Dalvin Cook would have never had an injury, he would get paid. They'd keep him. Nick Chub, by the way, in Cleveland. They don't want to get rid of Nick. Chub because Nick stays healthy and Nick's great. So if you have an average quarterback or an old quarterback like a Drew Breeze, running back becomes
Starting point is 00:17:43 valuable, but he's not going to be valuable with Trevor Lawrence, or, you know, the guys we know, he's just not going to be. All right, next up, let's go to the NBA where Wembeamia has kicked off in San Antonio after Victor Wemignyama
Starting point is 00:17:59 was drafted first on Thursday. The pressure is, you know, pretty heavy on Wemniama to live up to expectation. Here's what he had to say about that. I want to do the best I can in every aspect of the job. And, you know, as far as I've seen, the fans have been the best at their job. So, yeah, I can only help to be at their level. And, yeah, it's just, you know, there was a photo shoot before,
Starting point is 00:18:28 and I got to answer the question the best I can. I got to be the, yeah, I got to do my best. I wasn't expecting so much, so much, so much from just my arrival, you know. It's, it's really, it was really, really fun moment. And this is, this is what it's about, you know. This makes me happy. I will say I saw a picture of him. So David Robinson stood next to him.
Starting point is 00:18:52 I saw the picture and I went, I googled David Robinson's height, 7-1. David Robinson was 7-1. Look at him. Tim Duncan, 6-11. Now, some of that's camera angle. Yeah. This is David Robinson has never looked so short in his life. I mean, it's unbelievable.
Starting point is 00:19:11 I'm excited for this Wemba Yama guy. I think the league has to put him on TV a lot next year. You know, regular season NBA doesn't matter a ton. When I see Wemben Yama going up against Kevin Durant and the suns, like that, I don't want to say must-see TV in November, but I definitely want to check that out. This is a young guy. He's a total unicorn, man. I can't wait.
Starting point is 00:19:29 Yeah, very, very excited for Wemben. By the way, do you see the draft ratings? I did not. That was the highest NBA draft ratings in half a decade. Really? Showing once again, stars. This is why the NBA will always be fine. Stars drive ratings.
Starting point is 00:19:44 It's what baseball struggled with. And there wasn't a lot of drama at one. No, we knew what Benyama was going on. People wanted to see. They tuned in to see Victor and Scoot. And it goes back to every, when anybody criticized the NBA, I always say, sometimes they don't have the right stars. You know, when Jordan left, they were like Marbury, Iverson.
Starting point is 00:20:02 they weren't as embraceable. People love Jordan. We know internationally they're going to be, this kid's supposed to be the next great thing. People want stars. Next year, this NFL draft, by the way, next year. Oh. It's going to break every record because Caleb Williams at USC, it's going to break every draft record of all time. And the other kid from Carolina, Drake May, isn't Caleb, but he's an A prospect. He did tail off at the end of last year not to get too nerdy about college football.
Starting point is 00:20:31 He's very good, but he's very good. not Caleb. He was a young kid and he kind of struggled. And by the way, his family lineage is like a bunch of athletes. His brother played hoops at UNC. Now you got me thinking football. All right, but the final story, we'll go with the NBA because he's your buddy. Dremont Green has opted out of the final year of his deal with the Warriors. But according to Mark Stein and a host of other reporters, there's nothing but strong confidence emanating from the Bay Area that an agreement on a multi-year deal for Dremond is forthcoming. Now, we discussed it Friday. The Sacramento Kings cleared up a ton of cap space.
Starting point is 00:21:03 Yes, they did. They will make a move on either a wing for Harrison Barnes or a big to go alongside a bonus. Draymond Green makes sense. According to someone else, the Grizzlies, I think we talked about earlier, the Grizzlies were looking at Draymond. I'm still perplexed
Starting point is 00:21:18 by people thinking he would look good elsewhere. I don't think he seamlessly fits into like many teams in this league. Well, my takeaway on the Dallas situation, He's the opposite of Luca. He'll rebound. He'll defend. High IQ, veteran player, screen set or passer. So he doesn't need the ball a lot, but becomes incredibly valuable, analytically, emotionally, IQ.
Starting point is 00:21:46 Like, everybody thinks you need another great score with Luca. Why don't you give him some defenders, right? Like, that's what they did when they built around Curry. Clay Thompson, Draymond Green. They went and got guys that could defend. They knew Steph Curry's limitations on that end. with Luca. He's not going to defend.
Starting point is 00:22:04 That's not what he is. So, by the way, Denver with Yokic, said, we're going to go get Aaron Gordon. Long, he'll defend. You have to realize there's no perfect player. Yokic is close. You find your star, and whatever he's not great at, you protect him.
Starting point is 00:22:22 Right? So I think Draymond to Dallas is the perfect player. I don't think it'll happen. Yeah, it won't happen. But these teams in the West, Dallas, Sacramento would be wise to make a play for Dremont just to drive up his value and push the Warriors deeper into the tax. You know, I'm sure they'll stay with Dremont. But if I'm Sacramento, yeah, I make a balloon offer.
Starting point is 00:22:43 Hey, Dremont, come play for us. And then if the Warriors have to come close to matching it, right? They can't be like $20 million short. Is he leaving if it's that significant of a gap? You think there's any scenario where he leaves? I don't. I don't. Not even over like a $20 million figure.
Starting point is 00:23:00 No, I think he's made a lot of money. He's so important. I mean, just, he's not going to leave just, he's got a huge broadcasting career the minute he leaves the sport. But he's got that in any city in America, and then he's also got an extra 20 mil. But the Warriors Curry is the number one drawn this league. It's correct. And when he, trust me, I know the podcasting, when he's talking during big warrior games, the numbers are phenomenal. That's a good point, because, you know, you missed the playoffs and you're Raymond Green,
Starting point is 00:23:28 and all of a sudden your podcast isn't as relevant. And by the way, Sacramento is like the less interesting version of Golden State. Why go down? Well, Sacramento was interesting this year. They'll be good. Kind of. Are we going to do 10 minutes tomorrow on Sacramento's small forward quest? Kyle Kuzma, Jeremy Grant.
Starting point is 00:23:45 Yeah, Kyle Kuzma. That's beginning and ending of NBA title run, start there. I like him, but you guys are all crazy. I like the Grant Williams when I get laughed at here in the studio for Grant Williams. He's a perfect fit on that team. Let's do a big Grant Williams segment tomorrow. Good defense and he can knock down three. It's all over America.
Starting point is 00:24:01 J. Mack with the news. Well, that's the news. And thanks for stopping by. The Herd Lye News. Yeah, we're going to lead with John Collins, and then next segment is Grant Williams. And you'll just, we'll be at a zero-zero by 10 after the hour. Chase Daniels around the corners and NFL thoughts.
Starting point is 00:24:19 That's next. Be sure to catch live editions of the herd weekdays in noon Eastern 9 a.m. Pacific. Paulie Fusco here with Tony Fusco. Yo. Of course you know us as the host of the number one rated show in all the sports talk, the Polly and Tony Fusco show. Yeah. Now the suits at Fox Sports Radio gave us this air time because they wanted us to tell you how great our show is. Why? Yeah, instead of us doing that, let us just let our millions of fans do the talking.
Starting point is 00:24:47 Yeah, play the tape. You don't know crap about sports. Why am I even on this crap? Whoa, whoa, whoa. That's the wrong tape. Wrong tape. Just forget that. Look, listen to the Paulie and Tony Fosk. Fusco show on the iHeart radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcast.
Starting point is 00:25:04 Imagine an Olympics where doping is not only legal but encouraged. It's the enhanced games. Some call it grotesque. Others say it's unleashing human potential. Either way, the podcast's superhuman documented it all, embedded in the games and with the athletes for a full year. Within probably 10 days, I'd put on 10 pounds. I was having trouble stopping the muscle growth.
Starting point is 00:25:28 Listen to Superhuman on the IHard Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. A win is a win. A win is a win. I don't care what you're saying. Yep, that's me, Cliver Taylor the 4th. You might have seen the skits, the reactions, my journey from basketball to college football, or my career in sports media. Well, somewhere along the way, this platform became bigger than I ever imagined. And now I'm bringing all of that excitement to my brand new podcast, The Clifford Show.
Starting point is 00:25:55 This is a place for raw, unfiltered conversations with some of your favorite athletes, creators, and voices that not only deserve to be heard, but celebrated. One week, I'll take you behind the scenes of the biggest moments in sports and entertainment, and the next we'll talk about life, mental health, purpose, and even music. The Clivert Show isn't just a podcast, it's a space for honest conversations, stories that don't always get told, and for people who are chasing something bigger. So, if you've ever supported me, or you're just chasing down a dream, this is right where you need to be.
Starting point is 00:26:26 Listen to the Clifford show on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcast. And for more behind the scenes, follow at Clifford and at TikTok Podcast Network on TikTok. Do you remember when Diana Ross double-tapped Little Kim's boobs at the VMAs? Or when Kanye said that George Bush didn't like black people. I know what you're thinking.
Starting point is 00:26:45 What the hell does George Bush got to do with Little Kim? Well, you can find out on the Look Back at it podcast. I'm Sam Jette. And I'm Alex English. Each episode, we pick it here, unpack what went down, and try to make sense of how we survived it. Including a recent episode with Mark Lamont Hill waxing all about crack in the 80s. To be clear, 84 is big to me, not just because of crack. I'm down to talk about crack on day, but just so y'all know.
Starting point is 00:27:11 I mean, at this point, Mark, this is the second episode where we've discussed crack. So I'm starting to see that there's a through line. We also have AIDS on the table right now. They're finishing that sentence. I don't think there's a more important year for black people. Really? Yeah. For me, it's one of the most important years for black people in American history.
Starting point is 00:27:30 Listen to look back at it on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Well, he's a current free age, and he played in the NFL for a decade and a half. Worked for the NFL network last season, and he's having a great whitewater rafting week with his kids in an undisclosed location. Chase Daniel is joining us live. So you know Sean Payton very well in this Russell Wilson thing, and I thought it was striking. So he comes in, he revamps the O line, they draft a receiver, and Russell Wilson has shaved weight. And my takeaway was Sean's basically saying, Russ, you got to play basketball on grass. You're not a pocket guy.
Starting point is 00:28:17 That was my interpretation. When Russell's losing weight, because for the last. several years, I felt like he got thicker to absorb hits. So what do you expect Denver's offense? You know, Sean. What do you think it'll look like? Well, it's going to look exactly like the New Orleans Saints offense and like the Los Angeles Chargers offense that I was a part of for the last two years. It's pretty wild to me that, you know, they've got all this story, all this new cycle about Russell losing weight. And I'm thinking like, man, like he looks thick, but it's to absorb the hits, like you were saying.
Starting point is 00:28:50 He's been sacked a lot more the last three years than almost any other quarterback. He takes a lot of sacks. It doesn't throw a lot of interceptions. Sort of reminds you of Aaron Rogers, how he takes sacks. He just eats it. But this offense is going to be interesting. I think they're going to lean heavy on the run game right now. A lot of zone run scheme.
Starting point is 00:29:07 My offense coordinator of Joe Lombardi from the last two years with L.A., he moved over there back with Sean Payton. He was with Sean Payton in New Orleans. So it's going to be interesting to see what it looks like. It's very wordy. hard to learn. Russell's a really smart guy and know him personally. And I think this is going to be like a little bit of a rebound year for Russ. I mean, they're going to have the defense. Their defense is top five in the league. It's going to continue to be that way. So if they can
Starting point is 00:29:32 have a six to eight game buffer where they're around 400, I could see them at the second half of the season going on a little run. So, you know, I said this. I had somebody over the last three days tell me. I said, I'm not going to tell you if it's a current or a former Packer, but they said about Jordan Love, in the three years, they hadn't seen any wow, which is fine, but generally if you move up in the first round, I want wow. We have never seen video of him. It's as if they're trying to sort of keep it at a distance. I got Mahomes video after three practices leaked to the media.
Starting point is 00:30:09 What are your best guesses? I mean, you have a lot of contacts in the league. You're curious. What do you think he's going to, how is he going to do? I mean, your guess is as good as mine. I have no idea. They haven't really played, like you said a lot. You haven't seen a lot of film on them.
Starting point is 00:30:27 I love what you said about the Mahomes. As soon as he was in practice, he was slinging the ball. Here with Jordan Love, I mean, he is the guy. Obviously, the front office, the coaching staff for Green Bay knows something that we don't know and thinks that he's going to be a star. And I think he can be. But if you look at that roster, it's just not really. really deep at receiver. They've drafted some tight ends, obviously. And then it's going to be a lot of
Starting point is 00:30:51 Aaron Jones and AJ Dillon out the gate and probably a lot more than you've seen them run the ball in years past. It's going to be interesting to see what the floor can do in Green Bay with him. But, you know, I don't know if the ceiling's super high. I would hope that he can at least get the 500 his first year. It's going to have some growing pains. He hasn't played in two, three years. So, you know, last year you saw him in the Philly game when Aaron went out for a little bit, with his ribs and played pretty well against, you know, the runners up in the Super Bowl, the Philly of the Eagles. So I don't know.
Starting point is 00:31:24 I mean, your guess is as good as mine. I've heard that they love him, but when it hits the fan, I mean, it's going to be coming. Now, he's got to play well and play well early and often. So D'Andre Hopkins, we were arguing the other day. Is he a two or a one? Is there a certain quarterback he fits? He's on the market. If I said to you, where does his style, stylistically?
Starting point is 00:31:47 his personality. Where does he fit in your opinion, Chase? I think at this point in his career, there's one team that screams, and it's the Kansas City Chiefs. They don't really have a true number one or number two. They're thinking their young guys might step up, play really well, but, I mean, you know, it just depends on the salary cap. Brett Beach there, Andy Reed is going to get the absolute best out of him. He's at the end of his sort of career. He's at the end of his sort of career, maybe two or three years more. He's still got a lot of juice in them. He's one of the best receivers I've seen in the National Football League at the contested catch. You see here running against us last year in the game, breaking tackles, physical type guy. Kansas City just,
Starting point is 00:32:31 I mean, come on, man, like, this is your time. Sign him and give him a homes. I mean, he could have a thousand and ten touchdowns if he went to Kansas City, I think. So we saw Stafford get, I keep telling everybody, Stafford and McVeigh and a quarterback coach league are arguably after reading Mahomes the best quarterback coach combo in the league. You know Matt. There is a feeling Southern guy made a lot of money, got banged up last year, got banged up a lot in Detroit. And there are some feelings that, you know, if he gets banged up again,
Starting point is 00:33:05 Seacrest out, I've done my thing. Do you think he's the kind of guy? You know, not everybody's Brady. Some guys are like, you know, I got a life. I'm going to move back home to Dallas. your best guess on the Matt Stafford we'll see this year. Well, it comes down to one thing and one thing only, can he stay healthy? He's been hurt the last three or four years.
Starting point is 00:33:28 I remember with him in Detroit, it was like every single game. It was something little, but I mean, he has such great toughness. I thought in Detroit when I was with him, I was going to play almost every single game because he could barely make it out to practice. And so I'm like, am I playing am I not? And I never ended up playing maybe a few times. So being a backup quarterback behind him is a little bit worrisome because he just not quite sure because he takes practice reps
Starting point is 00:33:53 and he doesn't so you're not sure. But if he can stay healthy, without a doubt, I like what you said. I mean, him and McBay, definitely the brightest. I mean, I've been around both of them at the same time and they're talking ball 24-7, 365. It's non-stop. Obviously, you know, if Cooper Cup, Van Jefferson,
Starting point is 00:34:11 you know, Sean McBay said Cam Acres is going to stay healthy, A run game early in the year will really help him. But that offensive line, that retooled offensive line really needs to step up, keep him healthy. I really think he could have a good year because when he's healthy, when he's feeling right, the dude can sling it. Yeah. So finally, there's a story out that the Niners just, there's no market for Trey Lance. Generally, he struggled with completion issues. There are things you can correct.
Starting point is 00:34:40 but if a guy's got 8, 10 games, and he is struggling, and we know he's a bright kid, big physical kid, he's struggling to get over 55%. Is it possible, Chase? It's just, he was a dominant FCS quarterback, and this league's too fast, the window's too small for him. You were in this league for a long time. There's just some guys, it's too big of a jump. Yeah, I mean, it catches up to you really quickly, and I'm not saying Traylands can't play in this lead because the sample size isn't huge.
Starting point is 00:35:10 But as you know, if you're on the line and you, especially behind Brock Purdy, they bring in Sam Donald. So obviously they don't feel like he is going to be there. Now, of course there's not a trade market because no one's going to want to give up probably what San Francisco is asking. So we just don't know what he's like. It's almost like that Jordan Love. We just really haven't seen a lot of them.
Starting point is 00:35:30 And he can't be running the ball like he did last year. I mean, that was his biggest knock, right, is the completion percentage. So it's going to be interesting to see what happens. It's going to be interesting if they bubble wrap him in the preseason and see if another guy gets hurt or another backup gets hurt and they can have a trade market there. Or are they going to let him play, show what he's got, and then that's going to be the trademark.
Starting point is 00:35:51 So a lot of things change. If he does play again, I mean, he's just so young. He hasn't had a lot of starts. An FCS school, it's not like he went to an SEC school. So it's a huge jump, especially your first two or three years and especially with that offense. But obviously they saw something in him to the mortgage to franchise. They gave up a ton of draft capital to get him.
Starting point is 00:36:14 But it looks like they're trying to move on in a way, but there's just, like you said, there's no trade market. Yeah, Chase Daniel, go back to having fun with your family. I appreciate it on a Monday, man. All right, guys. Thanks so much. Yeah. I mean, it is interesting, J-Mack. I don't think it takes long to see it.
Starting point is 00:36:32 Like I went back this morning and looked up Joe Bowman. Burroughs first camp. Everybody knew. He's burning the defense. Zach Taylor's like, as advertised, I think the longer you, like at Jordan Love at this point, remember when they signed, they brought in Jordan Love, obviously, because Aaron had had a couple of, slightly erode, his seasons had eroded. So they bring him in and he goes back to back MVP. They would have moved off some of the theatrics of Aaron much earlier.
Starting point is 00:37:02 there's a reason they didn't. So it's like to me, it just doesn't take that long to see it in any entertainment field. Okay, I would largely agree with you. That being said, Kyle Shanahan knows football through and through knows offense. He looked at Trey Lance and his college career, which was essentially one season and thought he saw it and traded up to go grab Trey Lans. And it did not work out from it all. Like very poorly. So I don't know how you can quantify.
Starting point is 00:37:32 it? Because you can't really. It's like an eye test thing, right? Yeah, I just, I think it's, I always use the example of like one of those, the voice or American Idol. I don't know music, but you can see it. Like you can watch somebody.
Starting point is 00:37:49 Individual things, yes, individual talents. But when you're working with a team in football. Right. But if Jordan walked to the line and there's a certain it, command, confidence, ball comes out fast, I mean, Aaron Rogers wasn't playing. I watched Aaron at Cal.
Starting point is 00:38:05 He didn't blow me away. He was kind of robotic. But they were saying by second year with Aaron, everybody was like, and by the way, Farr was getting insecure about it. You know, reportedly Aaron was a little defensive when Aaron would jab him. Second year, everybody in the building was like, this kid is really, we had, I was talking off air the other day, may have been on or off to James Jones. Yeah, he was on the air.
Starting point is 00:38:29 And he said, oh, no, we all knew when Farrv was. there were like, we got the guy. Not a single. Well, I shouldn't say that. Romeo Dobbs said something recently, but wouldn't you, why are we getting all this temper expectations? Expectations aren't even high with Jordan Love. How's this? It's easier to see when someone doesn't have it than they have it. Yes. You can tell a bad singing voice. So you've seen Jordan Love, the offensive lineman, the coach, they've seen Jordan Love now for, what, three years? In addition to what, they saw his college stuff. They would, they have to know if he has it or not. So what did they do? They did not extend his, uh, rookie contract. Remember, they were like, let's renegotiate it, uh, make it more
Starting point is 00:39:09 incentive based. So I would say it's safe to think they don't think he has it. That's what I agree with. Yes. Yes. As opposed to him not having it. We just know he doesn't have it. I know that sounds confusing, but no, but they negotiated. They gave him a team friendly deal, meaning if they draft another quarterback, he could be on the roster as a backup if they couldn't move him. If you have it, you're not doing that. You're locking him up. Carson went small school, didn't work. Jordan loves small school. Trey Lantz small school. I mean, most of these guys come from Power 5 team. Look at the best quarterback. Now, Miami of Ohio Big Ben. Oh, what about the guy that Tennessee drafted?
Starting point is 00:39:46 Malik Willis. Small school. Liberty. Yeah, and he's so far. At least from what we've seen. Well, I mean, you go up and down. So you go the NFC, AFC. So Mac Jones, Alabama. Now, Josh Allen's small school, but like Big Ben, he was such a physical freak. So, I mean, it happens. Small school guys hit. Brian Dable. Sorry. There's a lot of whiffs. All right. Monday's done. First things first is around the corner. Be safe. We'll see you tomorrow. Live in L.A. It's the hurt. Another podcast from some SNL late night comedy guy, not quite. Unhumor me with Robert Smygel and
